Transcript
- 0:00Hello and welcome back to another fabulous edition of Five
- 0:03things Friday UK and it wouldn't be fabulous with
- 0:18my my wonderful Co host Simone. Hello.
- 0:21Hello, how are you? Yeah, good.
- 0:24Thank you. So for those who who don't know
- 0:26me, I'm Alex. I run the retail podcast, plus
- 0:29many other things that I'll talk about today.
- 0:32I help retailers and people who sell to retailers maintain their
- 0:35relevance. Simone, what do you do?
- 0:38Oh everything around rapid delivery.
- 0:41NIF Co founder of NIFT which is often described as the delivery
- 0:46for quality fashion. So working with lots of
- 0:48different retailers to help them to have localised and very fast
- 0:53delivery. Fantastic.
- 0:55Well, we're going to jump into it 5 things Friday.
- 0:57First thing we have topical news, Russell and Bromley.
- 1:02Russell and Bromley, yeah, this is definitely the obvious one
- 1:05that I wanted to talk about, but it is or has snapped up Russell
- 1:10and Bromley in a rescue deal and whilst it is exciting, I do
- 1:14think it does say a lot about where the UK is right now.
- 1:16You know, Russell and Bromley is 145 year old brand, real British
- 1:21heritage all over the High Street.
- 1:24So I think the fact that Russell and Bromley have ended up in a
- 1:27free pack rescue deal, yeah, I find it quite sad.
- 1:30But for next door, not really surprising.
- 1:33You know, they've quietly become, maybe not quietly
- 1:35actually, but they've become one of the smartest operators in
- 1:38retail. Didn't surprise me at all.
- 1:40Yeah, but I'll be intrigued to see what happens.
- 1:43I think it will do incredibly well.
- 1:45I'm more intrigued to see what happens with the physical side
- 1:49of Bristol and Bromley. Yeah, I think I read they're
- 1:51going to shut 30 stores and concessions and keep the brand.
- 1:56I'm surprised at VC didn't go in and buy them.
- 1:58Ultimately, the UK is going to end up with three mega
- 2:01retailers. You've got Frasers Group, you've
- 2:03got Next and you've got JD Sports who own multiple brands.
- 2:06Obviously you've got Zara. But in terms from a UK
- 2:09perspective, this is sort of going down that line of mega
- 2:15brand owners who who run who run the stores.
- 2:18OK, moving on Swift fleet coming on to me.
- 2:21I came across obviously Valentine's is what I don't
- 2:25celebrate Valentine's. So I'm not worried.
- 2:29We have a a good solid relationship.
- 2:32Valentine's is not our thing. So thoughtful of running a
- 2:35really funny campaign. I never actually knew knew this
- 2:38brand until I came across the Instagram video where basically
- 2:43they've got quirky Mrs thoughtful.
- 2:45Now, if she is Mrs thoughtful or she's a marketing campaign, but
- 2:49I love that in terms of it's very quirky.
- 2:52It feels like it's on message in terms of how they're relating to
- 2:56this new generation and more more specifically, how they're
- 3:00making cards relevant, which is, you know, something from the old
- 3:04world to a digital age. And I and I find it really
- 3:07interesting that they've gone for the materialisation of, you
- 3:11know, this as a thing and there and their cards all very cheeky
- 3:15and quite rude, some would say, but they are cheeky.
- 3:18And so they're not for everyone. But I just found it really
- 3:20interesting that they're going for a physical manifestation of
- 3:23the brand as we go through it. And, you know, coming up to
- 3:26Valentine's Day, it's super interesting to watch.
- 3:29Now moving back to you. I love that really great
- 3:32campaign. But yeah, I wanted to just shine
- 3:35a light on something that I was personally excited about this
- 3:39week. And it's Nina Hopkins who was
- 3:42the founder of of Jackie. I know know whether I'm saying
- 3:47this right. So if there's anybody listening
- 3:49and just like saying. It.
- 3:53Jackie, Jackie, it's a brand that I love, but she has, after
- 3:58the the success of Jackie, I think she stepped back in 2024.
- 4:01She's just launched this new ready to wear label called
- 4:03Sandy, which I love. Look at it, very cool.
- 4:06Very you, I got to be honest. Me, yeah, I always love Jackie
- 4:11as a brand. It's very cool and fun
- 4:14alternatives to real fur. Very Scandi inspired.
- 4:17Jackie is actually Danish for jacket.
- 4:19Still don't know whether I'm saying it right but yeah I'm
- 4:22just a sucker for Scandi design. Clean it's considered and it's
- 4:27very good for tall people and I'm.
- 4:29I think I didn't want to say that, but that's why I thought
- 4:32when I saw this and I didn't, you know, having seen you in the
- 4:34real world, OK, I get it. I get it.
- 4:37So yeah, I really love this. If there's any tall women
- 4:40listening in, check out D. But also as well, it's just a
- 4:44nice reminder that, you know, she fashion careers aren't
- 4:48linear. You know, she's built something
- 4:50successful, she's stepped away, and then she's come back with a
- 4:54fresh point of view and launched something else.
- 4:56So. And yeah, I'm excited to see the
- 4:59growth of Sandy We. We need, I mean, look, we just
- 5:02said you're going to end up with these mega corporations owning
- 5:06the High Street and everyone complaints at the High Street,
- 5:08specifically in the UK was ended ended up looking the same,
- 5:11right. You got your Starbucks, you got
- 5:13your next, you got your, you know, M&S at one end and John
- 5:16Lewis at the other end. And that's the UK High Street
- 5:19with with, you know, other brands in there.
- 5:22And so I think we just need to keep banging the drum for young,
- 5:26small, whatever fresh retail talent that's coming in, right
- 5:30to grow, you know, we need AI know farm Rio one of your
- 5:33customers. But you almost think, how do you
- 5:36get a farm Rio in every High Street exactly.
- 5:39Something fresh? Yeah.
- 5:40The same as everything else, yeah.
- 5:43Or Aubrey. Right, Obin.
- 5:45Sorry, Obin. OK, moving back to me.
- 5:53So although I'm not going to go into this, I'm going to be
- 5:56launching Keynote Lee imminently.
- 5:59And Keynote Lee is Spotify for keynotes.
- 6:02So NRF will be in here and it will be basically all of the
- 6:06keynotes from a a different perspective.
- 6:10But what I'm hoping to build throughout the year with the 13
- 6:13conferences I'll be at, we'll be together at Shop Talk Lux.
- 6:17Another shout out for Shop Talk Lux.
- 6:18If you go in, get your tickets, you'll get to meet me and
- 6:21Simone, but Simone will be on stage.
- 6:23I'll just be a media partner there.
- 6:25So please come say hello, but you will.
- 6:28I'm building this human intelligence platform and the
- 6:30reason being we haven't got there yet and this may be
- 6:33nothing to do with retail, but we are going to have to fight
- 6:36back against AI. AI ChatGPT.
- 6:39I love. I couldn't do what I do without
- 6:42it. But human intelligence, why we
- 6:44go to conferences will die out if we don't sort of catalogue
- 6:49grab and put everything in one place because the AI will come
- 6:52along and just, you know, make it into fodder and it'll just
- 6:56be, you know, insights. The where did that come from?
- 6:58And So what keynote is about is basic as I keep going back to
- 7:02the Spotify for human intelligence.
- 7:04So that keynote, you know, from JD Sports CEO that you saw what
- 7:09was the key takeaways and and almost, you know, we've seen Ted
- 7:12X and we've seen Ted and how YouTube sort of congregate to
- 7:16all of this. But again, it's really
- 7:17problematic when you're going to search for insights specifically
- 7:21within your industry. You get so much nonsense.
- 7:25It's really nice to look at the human intelligence element of
- 7:28this. And that's what I'll be
- 7:30launching it. Well, it's in beta, so you'll be
- 7:34able to sign up, get an account, get 3, three free credits, but
- 7:37the contents not there. So we're just loading up the
- 7:40content from NRF and then we'll see how that goes.
- 7:43So on that bombshell. Very excited for that, for
- 7:47someone like me who will go to a conference, take notes, we'll be
- 7:51rushing, go to the next one. Like, do you really revisit
- 7:54them? Like at the notes on my phone?
- 7:56I just, yeah, I think that's really great.
- 7:59I really do. And I think it's from a lot of
- 8:01the people who can't get to come like we sort of skim over that
- 8:04retail is a margin poor industry, right?
- 8:08It's not as if they've got oodles of money that they can go
- 8:11to 15 conferences are. Yeah.
- 8:13And so, you know, maybe your executive leadership team go,
- 8:17but the, the, the, the team, you know, beneath them can't go.
- 8:20So how do you share insights with them?
- 8:22And again, that's what I'm thinking about.
- 8:24All of the years that I've been going to conferences, people are
- 8:27like, oh, you know, I couldn't come fly out to New York, but my
- 8:31my management team are there. Love to hear about what that
- 8:34looks like. And there'll be some cool
- 8:35features like, you know, voice text to voice, right?
- 8:39So you'll be able to interact with their ask questions
- 8:41hopefully. But anyway, on that bombshell, I
- 8:44know that we're on a tight schedule.
- 8:45Simone, thank you so much and I will see you on Monday.
- 8:50I think in in flesh. Yes, you will see you in Abu
- 8:53Dhabi. How exciting.
- 8:55Get get your TikTok podcaster of mine.
- 8:58I've got some ideas for how we can do some stuff together.
- 9:03Take care. Thank you.
- 9:04Bye.
