- 0:00Wednesdays at this time, we get an opportunity to speak with our
- 0:02Eye on Politics team. And joining us now on the phone
- 0:05as usual, is Eric Lusk. And we also have Keith Mestrich
- 0:09with us as well. And this will be the last
- 0:11appearance for Keith because BJ is coming back next week and
- 0:14we've missed him sorely. But Keith, you've been doing a
- 0:16wonderful job. Thank you very much for plugging
- 0:18in. Gentlemen, Welcome both.
- 0:20Nice to have you here. Welcome.
- 0:23Thanks. Heath, we we have some some
- 0:26parting gifts for you, a couple of coffee mugs, maybe a visor.
- 0:32You know what? What size golf jersey do you
- 0:34like Matt? Matt wants to know so we can go
- 0:37hit the stash. Eric, I can only imagine you
- 0:39have some some really special surprises for me.
- 0:43We have a lot of coffee mugs, I can say that.
- 0:45Maybe a a a Russell Wilson football jersey from the Denver
- 0:49Broncos that I paid 4 bucks for. Oh yeah.
- 0:52I was thinking and I, I, I was thinking AT shirt that said
- 0:55bring back the Reagan years. Maybe it would be something that
- 0:57you'd like to give me? I think he's got enough of
- 0:59those, yeah. I I did find some less otten for
- 1:03governor hats from 2010. Worth all of 11 cents.
- 1:09I'm surprised they didn't make their way down to sub-Saharan
- 1:11Africa. So guys, let's talk a little bit
- 1:14about where we are right now. And Keith, I'd actually like to
- 1:16start with you here since you won't be able to join us next
- 1:18week. I'm going to ask Eric for his
- 1:20predictions next week because next Wednesday will be right
- 1:23before the primary, obviously. And I'd like to get kind of a
- 1:28sense now as we come to the home stretch, the closing moments
- 1:31here of the campaign for governor on in both parties.
- 1:35What do you think is going to happen?
- 1:36I think since last we spoke, there was the announcement of
- 1:38this alliance within the Democratic Party between Shanna
- 1:42Bellows, Hannah Pingree and Troy Jackson.
- 1:45So they're all recommending each other as second and third
- 1:48choicers to try to, I guess, prevent Nerve Shah from winning.
- 1:53What say you about that alliance and what do you think is going
- 1:56to happen, Keith? So predictions here, as we've
- 1:59talked about the last couple weeks are, are, are really hard.
- 2:01All the, all the variables, ranked choice, I don't know how
- 2:04people figure out how to do ranked choice with five, let
- 2:07alone 7 people. And the thing it's how do you
- 2:10figure out how to actually vote? It's very complicated.
- 2:14Independents being able to vote in the election, no idea how
- 2:16many people are, are, are doing that.
- 2:18If that happens, that's something that probably
- 2:20benefits, you know, candidates like Sean King, I would think.
- 2:25I'm not sure the alliance is makes sense.
- 2:27It feels to me like that may actually divide those second and
- 2:30third votes amongst people. I unclear.
- 2:35I, I have no idea who's going to win the Democratic race.
- 2:37Here's my only prediction. It goes at least three rounds
- 2:40before we know we don't know who the victor is 2 weeks from
- 2:43yesterday in the Democratic Party.
- 2:45But as I've said before, that party will the party will rally
- 2:48very quickly around the candidate and you'll see all
- 2:51four candidates who do not prevail getting behind find on
- 2:55the victor. And I think Jonathan Bush is
- 2:57going to win the Republican nomination.
- 2:58I think he's surging. I think Bobby Charles is running
- 3:01out of money. I don't think anybody else has
- 3:02emerged here. And I, I, I think it's going to
- 3:05be a Bush Bennett and an unknown candidate in the general
- 3:09election. May I ask a follow up about the
- 3:11Democratic primary and your contention that they'll quickly
- 3:15close ranks and support the victor?
- 3:16I tend to agree with that obviously, because I think
- 3:19that's what Democrats have done historically a lot, especially
- 3:23recently. I do wonder though, if say Nirv
- 3:26Shaw just I'm, you know, get a game out of scenario here, like
- 3:29let's say Nirv Shaw ends up getting like 38% of the vote or
- 3:32whatever, 40% of the vote and somehow ends up losing because
- 3:36of this alliance or something where, you know, somebody who
- 3:38even is in like third place or something ends up winning.
- 3:41Well, do you think there would be any grumbling, any animosity,
- 3:45Any maybe not challenge necessarily, but any bad taste
- 3:50in the mouth that comes from someone who lost winning?
- 3:56Be some of that, but it will all be in the background it will all
- 3:59be buried very very quickly. I I think the Democratic Party
- 4:03here is very aligned with wanting to maintain Blaine House
- 4:06as long as Donald Trump is the president and I think the party
- 4:09is very clear that that's the priority.
- 4:11The candidates are very close on a number of their policy
- 4:14positions. They genuinely like each other
- 4:16been to a number of the debates. They despite some of the
- 4:20hustling that's going on in the last day's elections, they
- 4:22genuinely like each other. They're generally forward of
- 4:24each other. I I don't think you'll see that.
- 4:26OK. Eric Lusk, I don't want you to
- 4:27make your predictions yet because we want to save those
- 4:29for next week. However, if you want to give me
- 4:31a general sense of what you think of the Alliance and what
- 4:36you think of Keith's overall analysis of things, that would
- 4:39be certainly a good question. So let's go there.
- 4:42Let's not forget, among the Democrats who are running to be
- 4:47the governor or the at least the Democratic representative in the
- 4:51general election, all of them are in and out of government
- 4:56morning, noon and night for day jobs.
- 4:59So there isn't a whole lot of value for Angus King, the 3rd,
- 5:04to lay into Nirav Shah. If he's looking to get a job in
- 5:08the Shah administration down the road, there's not a lot of
- 5:12benefit for Hannah Pingree to go after Angus King.
- 5:18If he were to win, she'd want a job in the King administration.
- 5:22So you've you've got an awful lot of hands washing one
- 5:26another. And I think that is going to go
- 5:28a long way to keep the acrimony down because they're all looking
- 5:32for jobs at the end of the election season.
- 5:34If a Democrat, if the Democrats keep the Blaine House.
- 5:37It's a little incestuous. But here we are over on the
- 5:40Republican side of the aisle. Ain't no way on God's green
- 5:45earth some of these people would want to work in a competitor's
- 5:50administration if they were to lose the primary and Bobby
- 5:56Charles were to win the general election, Jonathan Bush were to
- 6:00win. These guys have got their own
- 6:02businesses for the most part, and they don't want to be a
- 6:06second banana in somebody else's administration.
- 6:09And that goes a long way to explain how it is that you may
- 6:14not have the voters for a particular candidate interested
- 6:20in coming on board with the winner of a primary because the
- 6:25person they voted for as #1 is not looking to get a job with
- 6:31the administration of somebody who won the nomination and then
- 6:34eventually the general. Election.
- 6:36So this is sort of related to questions about predictions and
- 6:39whatnot, but we did have the latest Pan Atlantic survey come
- 6:42out last week and the results of that were curious.
- 6:47You know, Eric, let me stick with you for this question.
- 6:51You know, the Republican field had Bobby Charles leading again.
- 6:54So that would be like the eight thousandth survey I've seen that
- 6:57has him leading in some fashion. But I had I had in second place
- 7:02Jonathan Bush. And Jonathan Bush, when you get
- 7:04the rank choice voting thing, cooking was actually only like 5
- 7:07or 6 down from Charles too. So in terms of Keith's, you
- 7:10know, analysis that he may be surging, if you believe that
- 7:13poll, that may be true. But one of the more curious
- 7:16things I saw in that poll was Ben Midgley at 2%.
- 7:19I don't really think that's right.
- 7:21I don't think that's credible. But he has been up to this point
- 7:23sort of viewed as maybe the second second hand guy, the the
- 7:27alternative to Bobby Charles, maybe the guy that that might
- 7:30end up emerging as the consensus choice if you're a non Charles
- 7:33person, etcetera. And this poll says that he's
- 7:35like behind David Jones, right? So what do you think of that
- 7:39poll? Eric Luskin, what do you think
- 7:40is the true state of play as of today in that primary?
- 7:45I don't think Republican voters respond to polls much at all at
- 7:50this point. And I probably will get 7 or 8
- 7:56phone calls from an 888 or a seven O 3 area code out of
- 8:01Fairfax, VA looking to pull me. And you know, dear listener, how
- 8:07many times a day do you get asked to provide a poll or to
- 8:12opt out of receiving any more text messages?
- 8:15I don't think anybody is really in a position to be able to say,
- 8:19yeah, we did a faithful job of polling Republicans and we
- 8:24really know what we're talking about on this particular
- 8:27election. So when Susan Collins was never
- 8:33polling ahead of Sarah Gideon six years ago, and yet she won
- 8:37by, was it eight points, 7 points, why should I believe the
- 8:41polls? And there always seems to be
- 8:44this surprise on the part of Democrats when they get the
- 8:48general election long wrong because they've been in their
- 8:53own echo chamber for too long. So I don't really know what to
- 8:56make of that particular poll as having any sort of reliability.
- 9:01I can say that who wins the the main GOP state convention straw
- 9:11poll is also not a particularly good indicator because Mary
- 9:15Mayhew won the straw poll in I think it was 2018, and then she
- 9:22came in third in the primary. So we've we've got some problems
- 9:27here when it comes to be able to pull the Republican side of the
- 9:31aisle. I guess the same goes back to
- 9:34you, Keith, related to that poll, you know, what you saw
- 9:37there in the Democratic side was Nershaw with the lead.
- 9:40And interestingly enough, it looked like Bellows was a little
- 9:43bit lower than I I would have expected her to be.
- 9:45And it was a little bit shuffled.
- 9:46I mean, Angus King was in second place.
- 9:48You know, that's obviously a name ID thing.
- 9:50I thought that we were done with that a few months ago.
- 9:52What did you make of what you saw in that poll?
- 9:54So, so a couple of things. One thing just on, on your
- 9:57comment on Midgely, I, I agree with that.
- 9:58I, I have to believe Midgely's polling better than 2%.
- 10:02And I would put him up in the, in, in my sense, as I'd put him
- 10:05up in the upper echelon of candidates and in the Republican
- 10:08Party to, to win the nomination on the Democratic side.
- 10:11I, I just a couple of observations. 1 is, is, is it
- 10:16has remained fairly split amongst the the five candidates
- 10:21across all of the polling. I'll dismiss the the polls that
- 10:23the candidates themselves put out and, and try and go to the
- 10:27Pan Atlantic or the UNH polls and, and, and stay focused on
- 10:31that. I'll just a couple of
- 10:32observations. One is that the, the king has
- 10:37actually been in #2 in most of these polls and, and if it's
- 10:41name recognition or what, but it's been consistent.
- 10:44I don't know what that means, but it's, it's been, it's been
- 10:47consistent. 2 I don't know how much given that independence can
- 10:51vote in this election, I don't know how much of this polling is
- 10:54including independence in this. I read the methodologist poll.
- 10:56I couldn't figure out if they were putting independence into
- 11:00the, into the survey of, of, of, of the Democrats or the
- 11:04Republicans for that matter, or, or not.
- 11:06So I don't know what impact that may have.
- 11:08I have also no idea how many independents will vote in this
- 11:11election since it's the first time they can they can vote in a
- 11:14primary. And then and then third, I do
- 11:17think one of the things here that makes this polling suspect,
- 11:19and here's where I'll agree with Eric on this, is that I am
- 11:23surprised at how little emphasis and focus I think Maine voters
- 11:29have had on this election really until just now.
- 11:33And so whatever polling is out there, I don't know how how
- 11:35accurate it is because I think a lot of people are making their
- 11:38choicing choices now in in my discussions out talking to
- 11:43Lincoln County Democrats, where I'm most familiar with, very few
- 11:45people have voted early. And so I think people are
- 11:47holding back and, and waiting until Election Day to actually
- 11:50vote. And I think a lot of people are
- 11:51still making up their minds. Not only their minds are who
- 11:54they're going to vote first, but importantly in this election,
- 11:56who they're going to vote for a second.
- 11:58Let's sort of use that poll as a nice little way of sliding into
- 12:02the US Senate race to Eric brought up and mentioned the
- 12:05prior polling from prior years. Obviously, this poll showing
- 12:08Graham Plattner with a rather substantial lead actually over
- 12:12Susan Collins. Back to you, Eric, for a moment
- 12:15here. Certainly.
- 12:16Tell me about what you view that poll as saying.
- 12:19In reality, you kind of already alluded to the fact that you
- 12:21don't really necessarily trust it.
- 12:23But you know, Graham Plattner had a weird week last week, and
- 12:26he was on the cover of Time magazine.
- 12:29He also had a number of repeated scandals from his old Reddit
- 12:32days cropping their way back up again here.
- 12:34What do you think is actually true and what is not true about
- 12:38our observations in that U.S. Senate race?
- 12:39How strong is Plattner? That one's for you, Eric.
- 12:45When if if the Democrats find Donald Trump offensive and brash
- 12:51and, you know, prone to making all sorts of outrageous
- 12:56statement statements that the DNC has now come around to the
- 13:00idea. Hold my beer, watch this.
- 13:03Have we got a guy for you? And his name is Graham Plattner.
- 13:06So the polling that should be done to figure out how this
- 13:11election is going to come down would be don't bother asking the
- 13:15Democrats. They've made their deal.
- 13:17They they know it's OK to go ahead and run with Graham
- 13:21Platner. Who thinks that the Mother Mary
- 13:25is a skank? Oh, you know, pick pick your
- 13:27outrageous comment by Plattner that you like best.
- 13:32But how much polling of people who are going to vote in the
- 13:38Senate race is of independence across the state in numbers that
- 13:44are realistic based on representation of each
- 13:47particular county? If your poll doesn't have good
- 13:50crosstabs on that particular group of people who are going to
- 13:55be voting, because let's face it, it's going to be the
- 13:58independent voter that decides the outcome of that race, we can
- 14:02count on the Democrats reliably 80 or 90% to vote for Plattner.
- 14:07On the Republican side, it's going to be 80 or 90% who are
- 14:11going to vote for Collins. Where does the swing voter
- 14:14independent come down? That's the polling that is going
- 14:17to be meaningful and absent good crosstabs on those age groups,
- 14:23will vote. Will not vote, Maybe vote.
- 14:26You don't really have an accurate depiction of how the
- 14:29outcome is going. To go and back over to you,
- 14:32Keith. the US Senate race, Graham Plattner in his weird
- 14:35week. What's really going on there?
- 14:37Tell me more. Eric's right, it's the
- 14:40independents who are going to decide this election and how
- 14:42they, how they react to all this.
- 14:43I, I do think there's one other factor though there.
- 14:45I think there's, I think there are LePage Plattner voters and
- 14:49I, I think that's that there. And I think there's more of them
- 14:52you think and, and, and that he is real, his support is real in
- 14:58the Democratic Party. It is, it is strong.
- 15:00It is, it is out there and it is pretty, it is pretty fierce and
- 15:04it reaches beyond the party into some of the people who voted for
- 15:09Donald Trump for the reasons that they voted for.
- 15:11Donald Trump is sort of being an outsider who is really ready and
- 15:15prepared to take on the system and the elite and all the things
- 15:18that Plattner talks about and many of the things that Trump
- 15:21talked about. So I think there is that factor.
- 15:23But this will come down to independence and how they how
- 15:26they react to all this. And there are two unbelievably
- 15:29strong forces that I think we're going to see in this election.
- 15:32And 1 is very, very strong desire, hugely motivated desire
- 15:38to take back the United States Senate and to and to vote Susan
- 15:42Collins out of out of office. That is, that is a Rolling
- 15:45Thunder of enthusiasm and, and support and, and it will
- 15:50overcome many of the issues that some people might have about
- 15:55Graham Platner and some of his and some of his issues.
- 15:58Because that is such a motivating force on the
- 16:00Democratic side that I think will propel not only to Eric's
- 16:04.80 or 90% people voting for the Democratic candidate, but super
- 16:08high turn out in the, in the election.
- 16:10And I, I, I think while independents are important, what
- 16:13is the participation rate by Democrats?
- 16:15And I think it's going to be very, very high.
- 16:18In the remaining time that we have here, I'll go.
- 16:20I'll keep you, Keith, for a second here and maybe ask you
- 16:23this next question and then we'll wrap with Eric maybe about
- 16:26a minute and a half each for you guys on this one.
- 16:28But last night, Ken Paxton defeated John Cornyn handily.
- 16:32That was actually a skunking in the end here, which is likely
- 16:34due, of course, to the endorsement from Trump.
- 16:37What does that mean for both the Texas U.S.
- 16:40Senate race as well as the overall control of the body, the
- 16:43US Senate itself? What do you say, Keith?
- 16:46Yeah. So we talked about this a little
- 16:48bit last week. So first of all, I was surprised
- 16:49by how the margin it was. Much bigger.
- 16:52Than I thought it was, was, was going to be.
- 16:55But again, I think here in Texas, Texas is now in play.
- 16:58I think the Republicans will have to spend a lot more money
- 17:00than they wanted to to defend that seat.
- 17:02That will drain resources from other places.
- 17:04It changes the Senate map on the Senate becomes all of a sudden
- 17:08incredibly interesting to watch. I think if we were talking about
- 17:11this six months ago, we would have thought it was impossible
- 17:13for Democrats to take back the Senate.
- 17:14I don't think that's the case now.
- 17:16I think Paxton makes Talarico's bid for that seat viable.
- 17:22And I think there's a real chance Democrats could take that
- 17:24seat in Texas again. I think they'll be huge
- 17:26motivation on the Democratic base to turn out and vote.
- 17:28And you'll see more Democrats voting in Texas than maybe we've
- 17:31seen in a very, very long time. And I think that drains
- 17:34resources from other places and puts places like Iowa and North
- 17:38Carolina and other places much more in play.
- 17:40So it's a, it's a, it's a really important election outcome.
- 17:45All right, And over to you, Eric Lusk in about a minute or so.
- 17:47What say you? There was the release of the
- 17:51Democrat Party's autopsy of the 2024 election.
- 17:59And the problem that they seem to be able to isolate on was
- 18:04simply that the message of the Democrat Party wasn't spoken
- 18:09often and hard and loud enough by Joe Biden and then by but by
- 18:18the Kamala Harris campaign of 107 days.
- 18:24But I think the Democrats are missing the point here with that
- 18:28particular autopsy when they come back with somebody like a
- 18:31taller Rico. Taller Rico is now a moderate in
- 18:34the Democrat Party. He thinks there are only 6
- 18:37genders among humanity instead of 72.
- 18:41That is now a Democrat moderate. And I think what you're seeing
- 18:46here is if Ken Paxton is a problem for the Republicans,
- 18:51then his best solution is to have a candidate such as James
- 18:56Talarico. I don't.
- 18:58That's why I got to cut you off, Eric, because we're up against
- 18:59the clock. When I say a minute, I mean it.
- 19:01Thanks a lot, Keith. Appreciate it.
