- 0:01Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it does not yet appear

- 0:10appear we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is.
- 0:15Hey listeners, this is Nick from Scripture Central, and today's
- 0:18podcast addresses the question, What did early Christians teach
- 0:23about exaltation? In 1832, Joseph Smith and Sidney
- 0:32Rigden had a grand vision of the heavens.
- 0:35This vision, not unlike other early Christian descriptions of
- 0:38the heavens, would go on to be canonized as Section 76 of the
- 0:43Doctrine and Covenants. One of the most sacred blessings
- 0:46promised to those who would obtain the highest heaven or the
- 0:49celestial Kingdom, may seem foreign to many Christians
- 0:53today. They are they who are priests
- 0:56and kings, who have received of his fullness and of his glory.
- 1:00Wherefore, as it is written, they are gods, even the sons of
- 1:04God. Furthermore, in another
- 1:06revelation given to Joseph Smith, these same Saints are
- 1:10similarly described. Then shall they be gods, because
- 1:13they have no end? Therefore shall they be from
- 1:16everlasting to everlasting because they continue.
- 1:20Then shall they be above all, because all things are subject
- 1:24unto them? Then shall they be gods, because
- 1:27they have all power, and the angels are subject unto them.
- 1:32The language of Saints becoming gods or like God, is found
- 1:35within the Bible. For example, when challenged by
- 1:38the Pharisees who sought to stone Jesus, they listed
- 1:41blasphemy as Jesus's crime. Jesus, however, responded by
- 1:45citing Psalm 82, verse six. The Jews answered him, saying,
- 1:50For a good work we stone thee knot, but for blasphemy, and
- 1:55because that thou, being a man, makest thyself God.
- 1:59Jesus answered them. Is it not written in your law?
- 2:03I said, ye are gods. Peter taught the Saints that ye
- 2:07might be partakers of the divine nature, and Paul taught that we
- 2:12are the children of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of
- 2:16God, and joint heirs with Christ.
- 2:19Some of these promises are especially manifest in the
- 2:21writings of the Apostle John. In a string of blessings given
- 2:25to seven churches, the Saints are promised to him that
- 2:28overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I
- 2:33also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne.
- 2:38Again at the close of the Revelation they are promised.
- 2:41He that overcometh shall inherit all things, and I will be his
- 2:46God, and he shall be my Son. Finally, in the first epistle of
- 2:51John the Apostle powerfully taught Beloved, now are we the
- 2:55sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be.
- 2:59But we know that when he shall appear, we shall be like him,
- 3:04for we shall see him as he is. And every man that hath this
- 3:08hope in him purifies himself, even as he is pure.
- 3:13The ultimate fate of mankind was clear to the early apostles.
- 3:17While full details of our eternal lives have not been
- 3:19revealed, we have been promised that we would be like God in the
- 3:23fullest sense of the word. This belief continued well into
- 3:27the early centuries of the Church.
- 3:29Clement of Alexandria, who taught during the 2nd century
- 3:33AD, once wrote the Word of God became man, that thou mayest
- 3:37learn from man how man may become God.
- 3:41Furthermore, he believed that God rejoices most when he sees
- 3:45us bright with the ornament of intelligence, and thereby he is
- 3:48made like to God. He is beautiful, He does not
- 3:52ornament himself. His is beauty, the true beauty,
- 3:56for it is God, and that man becomes God since God so wills.
- 4:02Tertullian similarly taught that our exaltation depends upon
- 4:05God's grace and mercy. Who will reward the faithful
- 4:08with this blessing? For we shall be even gods, if we
- 4:12shall deserve to be among those of whom he declared.
- 4:16I have said ye are gods, and God standeth in the congregation of
- 4:21the gods. But this comes of his own grace,
- 4:24not from any property in us, because it is he alone who can
- 4:29make gods. Irenaeus of Lions similarly
- 4:33taught that the word of God, our Lord Jesus Christ, who did
- 4:36through his transcendent love become what we are, that he
- 4:40might bring us to be even what he is himself.
- 4:44By the 6th century AD, teachings about exaltation began to slowly
- 4:48fade in official discourses and sermons of mainstream
- 4:52Christendom. Some Christian churches still
- 4:55maintain a form of this teaching, most notably the
- 4:58Eastern Orthodox faith. Nonetheless, there remains
- 5:01distinct differences in how many contemporary Christians
- 5:05interpret this doctrine and the ancient teachings of the New
- 5:08Testament authors and other early Church Fathers.
- 5:12But the full implications of this important doctrine have
- 5:14been more completely revealed and restored through the Prophet
- 5:18Joseph Smith, clearly demonstrating the ultimate fate
- 5:21of mankind. When the Lord spoke to Moses, he
- 5:24declared, This is my work and my glory to bring to pass the
- 5:29immortality and eternal life of man.
- 5:32Like Clement of Alexandria and other early Christians, Latter
- 5:35Day Saints likewise believe that God rejoices most when he sees
- 5:39us bright with the ornament of intelligence and the eternal
- 5:42life that He freely bestows on us.
- 5:45We believe that God actively desires us to share the same
- 5:48kind of life He has. Should we accept His gift and
- 5:52stay true to the covenants we have made with him?
- 5:55Of course. The doctrine of exaltation or
- 5:57becoming like God does not in any way belittle God or seek to
- 6:01replace him now or anciently, as expressed by the 1st Presidency
- 6:06in a doctoral exposition entitled The Father and the Son
- 6:09in 1916. Yet though yet though exalted
- 6:15Saints begods per DNC section 76, verse 58, they are still
- 6:21subject to Jesus Christ as their Father in this exalted
- 6:24relationship. And so we read in the paragraph
- 6:27following the above quotation, and they are Christ's and Christ
- 6:31is God's. Rather, we will simply enjoy the
- 6:34same type of life that God lives while we worship and serve him
- 6:38in celestial glory. This has been noted by Scott
- 6:41Peterson, who wrote those who believed this doctrine anciently
- 6:45did not hold that they would replace God.
- 6:48On the contrary, the assumption was that they would always
- 6:51worship and reverence God and Christ.
- 6:54However, for early Christians, salvation in its fullest sense
- 6:58consisted of God making you as He is and empowering you to do
- 7:03what He does. Thus, the redeemed would
- 7:06continue to worship God, but would participate in His
- 7:09creative acts throughout eternity.
- 7:12This doctrine also serves to elevate mankind more fully,
- 7:15demonstrating our relationship with our Heavenly Father.
- 7:19Specifically, it teaches us what we as His children are capable
- 7:23of becoming. If we stay true and faithful to
- 7:26the covenants we have made with God in this way, we truly will
- 7:30be heirs, Heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ.
