- 0:09Hello and welcome to Fraggle Talk Back to the Rock, the
- 0:13unofficial Fraggle Rock podcast brought to you by toughpigs.com.
- 0:17This is the podcast where we cover Fraggle Rock Back to the
- 0:20Rock episode by episode, along with the talented producers,
- 0:23performers, writers and builders who helped put it all together.
- 0:26I am your host, silly creature Joe Hennes.
- 0:30Today we're talking about Season 2, episode 11, Lost and Found
- 0:35Fraggles, in which you get a twin and you get a twin and you
- 0:39get a twin. Everybody gets a twin.
- 0:42Yay twins for everyone. This week we've got 2 fantastic
- 0:47special guests. First up is a puppeteer who
- 0:50performs Measure, Doozer, Brio the Troubadour and Moki's right
- 0:55hand. It's Kira Hall.
- 0:57Hello, Kira. IE thank you for having me on.
- 1:01Thanks so much for being here. Our 2nd guest is all over the
- 1:05rock as Ma Gorg, Marjorie the Trash Heap, Sherry Contrary and
- 1:09more. It's Amy Garcia.
- 1:12Hi, Amy. Hi, Hi.
- 1:14Hi, hi, hi. I'm so happy to have you both
- 1:18here. This is such a joy to get to
- 1:19talk about Fraggle Rock with you.
- 1:21I cannot wait to dive into this episode with you, or I should
- 1:24say dig into this episode. We're going deep underground for
- 1:26this one. Amy, let's let's start with you.
- 1:30You are credited as the Co puppet captain along with John
- 1:34Sartaglia on the season. What is it?
- 1:36What does that mean? That means I get to, I got to
- 1:40organize who went where, who did what, like extra puppet.
- 1:46You know, when we get our scripts, most spoken roles are
- 1:51assigned and they pretty much know which puppets they're going
- 1:54to be performing in. But any extraneous little
- 1:57characters. So like, I'll like refresh
- 1:59people on choreography and, like, make sure that they're
- 2:02seen and that they're looking where they're supposed to look.
- 2:05So I'm always like, eyes on the background, you know, as the
- 2:08scene is going on up front. Yeah.
- 2:12So John couldn't handle that all by himself.
- 2:16I know. Right.
- 2:19He I get it. He's a busy guy.
- 2:21Yeah. No, but remarkably enough, I I
- 2:25bet if, if I wouldn't have taken this on, he would have
- 2:28absolutely been able to handle it.
- 2:30He's just, I don't know how Johnny Tartaglia does it.
- 2:35His brain is compartmentalized in a way that no other humans
- 2:39is. He is able to do all things.
- 2:41I'm pretty sure that he's a magical creature.
- 2:44So. And and he doesn't sleep.
- 2:47I I just assume. I, I, yeah, I don't think he
- 2:51does either. I really don't.
- 2:53I really don't. Don't know how he would fit it
- 2:56in, No, Yeah. No.
- 2:57Yeah, yeah. Well, you know what it it takes
- 2:59a lot to bring Fraggle Rock to life.
- 3:01And if there's one person who's going to have sleep deprivation,
- 3:04then it's all worth it. Unfortunately, that person is
- 3:07John Tartaglia. We'll say Amy is absolutely
- 3:12selling yourself short. I love you, Johnny.
- 3:14He, he couldn't do it on his own.
- 3:16Come on. There.
- 3:18There's how many of us 24? How many puppeteers are we?
- 3:22They're they're about, yeah, about 24, yeah.
- 3:25And we're all goobers. We're.
- 3:27Terrible paying. Attention.
- 3:28We love goofing with each other. And Amy.
- 3:33Yeah, Amy was stepping in as the Co captain this season and
- 3:38incredible like Amy is such a great leader, so clear.
- 3:44So like I I what's the word I'm looking for?
- 3:49You're just you got your stuff, you got your biz together and
- 3:55trying to watch my mind, my phrisology, my PS and QS, but
- 4:01no, Amy's just So what? You're an incredible leader and
- 4:06like, it was so awesome having you in that role this season
- 4:10because I felt like we were just in such good shape.
- 4:13Oh you're so sweet, nice to see. Yourself.
- 4:16No, no, no, no, thank you. I I appreciate that.
- 4:19But like this was an an an insanely talented and very I I
- 4:24know that they're all like, you know that you're saying that
- 4:26that everybody was a goober. Yes, that is all true, but you
- 4:29are all my people. And it was it was.
- 4:32I felt like I am the Mama bear right now and I'm gonna make
- 4:36sure all, all my little Cubs are, are, are taken care of.
- 4:42So that, that felt good because I know there there were a, a few
- 4:48puppeteers who had really leveled up from season 1 to
- 4:51season 2 that were maybe a little nervous that they weren't
- 4:55going to be able to, to get utilized more prominently.
- 5:00And it felt good to, to sort of like, you know, kind of like
- 5:05nudge that opportunity a little bit.
- 5:06That felt, that felt really, really, really great, I think
- 5:10for everybody. But yeah.
- 5:12So what? First of all, I have to put this
- 5:14out there 'cause I'm sure someone else had the little
- 5:16tingle in their brain. Goober Fraggle, let's have to
- 5:19say it out loud. Second of all, Amy, as you're
- 5:23talking about puppeteers who kind of leveled up for Season 2,
- 5:27would you consider Kira to be one of those people?
- 5:29Oh my God. Well, the episode that we're
- 5:32talking about specifically right now.
- 5:33Like Kira was MVP on this one, hands down.
- 5:36I don't think what's weird about the crediting in in on on the
- 5:41episodes is that you don't actually get to to see the list
- 5:46of everything that Kira had their hand in.
- 5:50It was like, as I was watching Kira, did you?
- 5:53Did you? Were you also like and that's me
- 5:56and that's me and I'm over there.
- 5:58That's. My mom, we we sit and watch the
- 6:00episodes when I visit her and I'm like, OK, so I'm in this
- 6:04hand at this point and then I'm helping out.
- 6:07I'm under Cotter pin here and I'm that RC thing in the
- 6:10background. OK, now I am actually Cotter pin
- 6:14and hold on now I'm Yeah. And you were all.
- 6:19Over like, I don't think that there was a single frame that
- 6:22you weren't a part of. There were a few cause like,
- 6:28like Amy said, I assist Donna primarily.
- 6:31So I'm usually there assisting for mochi or Cotter pin.
- 6:35And then in this episode, I think I know you jumped in doing
- 6:39some of Donna's stuff. Ali Eisner jumped in doing some
- 6:42of Donna's stuff because I was focusing more on leader.
- 6:47But yeah, you know, you just wiggle around wherever you need
- 6:51to go. So that's a good segue to my
- 6:55next question that I have here, which is like this episode that
- 6:58we're about to talk about. There's so much doubling in this
- 7:02episode, and like, through many definitions of that word.
- 7:06So when you're asked to sit in as someone else's character
- 7:10because the main performer is busy doing something else, is it
- 7:13scary or is it exciting? No, it is absolutely terrifying,
- 7:19at least for me. Are you kidding me?
- 7:22I mean, and like, there are very few puppeteers who are able
- 7:25like, like Andy Hayward is a master at being able to like
- 7:29completely absorb every nuance, every little every little oomph,
- 7:36right? And.
- 7:37To to. Picking up what other puppeteers
- 7:40are doing so it doesn't seem but man, I put on a puppet.
- 7:43I'm like, this is the only way I know how to move it and I try
- 7:47try my best vocally. I think I can I can match
- 7:51somewhat, but holy moly, there are just some I would.
- 7:55Please God, don't ever ask me to be a Wembley in anything because
- 7:59Jordan is so dialed in, you know, like it's I'm so proud of
- 8:05this team. Sorry, I'm like babbling more
- 8:07coffee now. OK, bye.
- 8:08No, you're right. It's it, there's, I do think
- 8:12it's exciting I because I get into that nerdy stuff like what
- 8:17what is the difference between how Moki moves versus how, you
- 8:24know, like boober moves? I kind of had that bandage
- 8:27ripped off very early. We were shooting the first song
- 8:31in Season 1. Party, party in Freckle Rock.
- 8:35Party down in Freckle Rock. Joe's gonna know all the
- 8:39accurate terms and titles, and I'm not gonna know nothing like
- 8:42I'm. Gonna like, I'm gonna sit here
- 8:44and correct you. It's.
- 8:45Gonna have you. Like this on my podcast?
- 8:48Loud. But right at the end of that,
- 8:53Marvin walks in front and goes, oh, I like that right, Frank
- 8:57doing his thing. And Frank wanted to be and
- 8:59Marvin at that moment. So for that last bit of the
- 9:01Frankel 5 dancing, he was like, hey, Kira, can you do Boober for
- 9:04me? So I was like.
- 9:07OK, sure. And did my best.
- 9:10And you know, it was a dance thing, so thank goodness I had
- 9:13some leeway. But yeah, it's, it's a blend of
- 9:17thrilling and terrifying. Anytime I've had to step in as
- 9:20Moki, I'm like. OK.
- 9:23Just make Donna proud. And Kira nails it every time.
- 9:28But can we also like this is the thing that I I wish had been
- 9:32recorded. So like I'm kind of segueing
- 9:35into into leader and into Catherine O'Hara and and Kira.
- 9:42Kira's. Impersonation of Catherine
- 9:47O'Hara, which was a little Moira rose ish, which I was really
- 9:51thrilled about. Was.
- 9:53So. Frighteningly dead on.
- 9:57I like and I was saying, is this a Canadian thing?
- 9:59Is this like you, all Canadians are Canadians?
- 10:03I was like. Oh my God.
- 10:04I. Want her to do all things.
- 10:06You were spectacular, and I hope somewhere in the world there
- 10:12exists the version of you voicing that character.
- 10:18You know what I mean? Because you left such a like so
- 10:23much space for Catherine O'Hara, I guess, to come in and and dub
- 10:30right and be able to because you, you hit every mark.
- 10:34It was fantastic. Well, it's truly A-Team effort.
- 10:37And I think I'm sure this has been talked about on the podcast
- 10:40before, Joe, that when we have someone doing a celebrity voice,
- 10:43they give us a scratch track. So we get used to their
- 10:47intonation and their cadence and everything kind of what they're
- 10:49planning to do with the lines. And then we do our best version
- 10:53of that on the set. We're not trying to like lip
- 10:55sync to their recording, but we're doing a performance, which
- 10:58is I think super smart because then it's way more connected and
- 11:02then they come back in and do the ADR.
- 11:05So the scratch tracks that Catherine had recorded that they
- 11:09sent to me were bonkers. Like she is the queen of the
- 11:15unique line read. And I think that's why I
- 11:17channelled the Moira Rose stuff when I was trying to do it on
- 11:21set because you know, she's got such a great Catherine.
- 11:27O'Hara is such an amazing character actor and Moira in
- 11:30particular just choose the crap out of every line you give her
- 11:37and done the same with leader like these wonderful choices
- 11:41about the musicality of her lines and how quickly or quietly
- 11:45she said things. And so it was a bit
- 11:50intimidating, but I was able to go in knowing that she was
- 11:55probably going to want to make some more bigger choices like
- 11:59that. And so that definitely empowered
- 12:02me to do my best, Catherine O'Hara.
- 12:06That I could. Oh God, it was so good.
- 12:10Feel free to say no, but can you give us a taste of of what that
- 12:14sounded like? Hold on a second.
- 12:19You get in character, this is like that, like James Lipton
- 12:21being like, can I talk to leader right now?
- 12:26Is later in the room with us, right?
- 12:28Now I'm focus. Hold on, I'm just pulling up.
- 12:32The Herb Erdlinger Winery Script OK In the Lee of a picturesque
- 12:42Ridge lies a small, unpretentious winery, one that
- 12:47pampers its fruit like its own babies.
- 12:51Hi, I'm Moira Rose and if you love fruit wine as much as I do
- 12:57then you'll look. Anyway, you get the idea.
- 13:00Beautiful. So that was it was basically
- 13:03Moira Rose, but with that gobo energy, right that.
- 13:08If only the script had the word Bebe in there, that would have
- 13:11made it perfect. The found fraggles.
- 13:16Oh, I like that. Not enough to change it, but
- 13:19it's nice. That's so good.
- 13:26It's like she's in the room. I love it.
- 13:28Well, let's talk about this episode.
- 13:30This episode actually picks up where we left off in the
- 13:33previous one, where the Fraggle 5 plus Lanford and Cotter Pin
- 13:38are entering this new mysterious cave and there's always weird
- 13:41statues and tapestries around. Before we talk about what we
- 13:46actually what actually happens here, I want to talk about this
- 13:49set design. It threw me off.
- 13:52I can't speak for other Muppet, other Fraggle fans here, but it
- 13:56threw me off a little bit that the statues are really just
- 13:58armatured fraggles. So it's like, are they statues?
- 14:02Are they frozen? Like did it look a little bit
- 14:04more different in person than it did on the screen?
- 14:09Or is it? Was it just that?
- 14:10Or was it just like Gray armatured puppets on display?
- 14:17I can't remember now, Kira, can you like?
- 14:19Yeah, it was, it was, I think we were going for like museum
- 14:22diorama, right? And it was the armature puppets,
- 14:27you know, staged in a way that you might go see.
- 14:29Like these are the Cavemen at the Natural History Museum
- 14:34there. There were some moments of it's
- 14:36a little taxidermy. Yeah.
- 14:39I mean, maybe they do things differently down there, like
- 14:41when a when a Fraggle dies, you just stuff them and they're
- 14:43always there. I I'm just going to go with it's
- 14:47lost Fraggle craftsmanship. They have really unique way of.
- 14:51Yeah, and, and there there's some cool stuff back there too.
- 14:55I I I should have taken more time to look at all of them, but
- 14:57there's one that's pretty visible on on screen of a
- 15:01Fraggle riding a Gorge chicken. Oh yeah.
- 15:07I like that. I like that.
- 15:09I like, I like thinking about like the lost Fraggles hunting,
- 15:13you know, prey. On the backs of.
- 15:15These giant chickens. Yeah, there's definitely some
- 15:17complex agricultural practices in.
- 15:20Totally. Yes, but I.
- 15:22Don't know if they hunt them, they probably just use them as
- 15:24transportation because like I think that for the most part
- 15:28fraggles seem to be pretty vegetarian.
- 15:31That's true. Yeah, except for Icy Joe.
- 15:35Icy Joe admitted to eating Doozers in her day.
- 15:39It's. Been delicious.
- 15:43No. They're radish flavored, aren't
- 15:45they? No.
- 15:46No, like I see Joe is the only fraggle who knows the taste of
- 15:52meat. Do doosers also eat radishes?
- 15:57Oh, that's a good question. I don't know.
- 15:59I don't think so. It's building material for them.
- 16:02Why would they eat that? Right, So what do they eat is
- 16:05the question. Well they they nibble on the
- 16:08strawberries, so you do see that in season 2.
- 16:13But whatever they eat, it's probably very efficient.
- 16:15Like it's probably like they've got the whole thing in a in a
- 16:18pill or in a gel. Soylent.
- 16:23Yeah, it's Soylent. Yeah, Soylent.
- 16:26Oh, no. Oh, no, it's doozers.
- 16:32Only the greatest doozers. No, no, but.
- 16:35You have to. Do it in a Doozer voice, Joe.
- 16:38It's Doozers, That's right. Yeah.
- 16:44Oh, no. OK, let's get off this topic as
- 16:45fast as we can. So.
- 16:50So Barry Blueberry pops up to give a like a previously on
- 16:53Fraggle Rock recap to to no one, I guess.
- 16:56Unfortunately, he is not paired with Cherry Contrary in this
- 17:00moment. But because Amy, you are here,
- 17:03let's talk about Cherry Contrary.
- 17:08First of all, I love her. She's great.
- 17:10Oh my God, thanks. She was not supposed to be mine
- 17:15like like the the vocally she was supposed to.
- 17:19Can I say this part like that she was supposed to be Maya
- 17:24Rudolph? Really.
- 17:28And so I was as, as Kira had, you know, trying to give a lot
- 17:33of space for that world of, of somebody coming in and and ADR
- 17:38in 'cause I did not receive a scratch track and I was.
- 17:40Just like, OK, let's just let's just.
- 17:41Wing it. I'm gonna wing it.
- 17:43I'm gonna do my best big old girl right so.
- 17:47And then even even vocally, in one of the episodes, she sings
- 17:52their version of the national anthem.
- 17:54It I was like, I don't know what I'm gonna do.
- 17:57And, you know, I, I had kind of rehearsed this random thing and
- 18:01when I went to perform, it was like, OK, I'm good, that's good
- 18:05enough. Let's move on.
- 18:06First of all, I'm sorry to interrupt you, but like, first
- 18:09of all, when we talked about that episode, I can't remember
- 18:11who which who our guests were, but we were all raving about
- 18:13your national anthem, which was hysterical.
- 18:16But second of all, that now knowing that it it was
- 18:19originally conceived of as being my Rudolph, that's got to be a
- 18:22reference to her Saturday Night Live sketch where she sings the
- 18:25national anthem. Oh.
- 18:26Absolutely. Absolutely.
- 18:28That's so funny. I know, right?
- 18:30And Can you imagine if it would have been?
- 18:33Her well. I mean.
- 18:36Just get her for another character because here's The
- 18:38thing is, you are wonderful as Sherry and I don't want to take
- 18:41that away from you, but I do love Maya Rudolph and I'd love
- 18:44to see her on Fraggle Rock. We'll think of something else
- 18:48for her, you know, see Amy doing Sherry and they're just like,
- 18:53yeah, OK, Quietly pick up the contract for Maya Rudolph.
- 18:56Drop it in the shredder. OK.
- 19:00Love you, Maya Rudolph, but no, Amy, you.
- 19:03I'm so glad you got to be. And then just you and Johnny
- 19:05goofing together is the greatest treat.
- 19:08That that was, that was pretty, pretty sweet.
- 19:13That was yeah. That it, it's always, it's
- 19:15always fun to be in the playpen with John Tartaglia.
- 19:18But like, to get to be the contrary to his blueberry was
- 19:23even more special. And I just love that she was
- 19:28pink, you know, like the whole pink and blue.
- 19:31Like it just, she's so over the top with her, like,
- 19:37newscasteriness. It's like I dance.
- 19:41The I've said this on this podcast before, but the disdain
- 19:45that that Barry Blueberry has for Cherie contrary of just like
- 19:50gritting through his teeth, like for the like look, he that smile
- 19:54on for the camera. I think that's the funniest
- 19:57thing. I love that.
- 19:58I love that new dynamic for season 2.
- 20:00Yes. Yes.
- 20:02And Johnny is able to play that so impeccably.
- 20:05Like it's when you think about it, it's a, it's a puppet.
- 20:09He's able to communicate that through his voice acting and
- 20:13also just like the tiny little, you know, nuances in his
- 20:18manipulation. I'm just, I'm always so
- 20:20impressed by what he literally like pulls out of him in play
- 20:26time, even, you know, when the cameras are off and we're just
- 20:30kind of all because that's, I'm, I'm sure other people on this
- 20:33podcast have talked about it. When the cameras are off, we're
- 20:36still goofing around with those puppets on.
- 20:38Like we're like, and, and a lot of times I feel like it's like
- 20:43people have a radar or, or they're watching us and they're
- 20:46like, oh, that's a yeah, let's say we should probably, you
- 20:49know, 'cause I've, I've seen a little bit of our play time
- 20:52maybe appear in other, you know, in, in other scenes or, you
- 20:57know, I don't know, It's I, I encourage the play.
- 21:02Yeah, good, good. That definitely comes across,
- 21:04especially with characters like this who who seem to be able to
- 21:07do anything. Sherry and and Barry can just,
- 21:11they could say anything. They could do anything.
- 21:13It's in character. That must be so much fun and
- 21:16freeing to just get to riff and not have to worry about like,
- 21:20well, would you know the the puppeteer from, you know, 40
- 21:24years ago who originated this character really do that?
- 21:27It's like, no, you, you made it up.
- 21:29You could do it. No one's gonna tell you you're
- 21:30wrong. We were kind of, I think all
- 21:33told as well, yes, we're honoring OG cast absolutely for
- 21:38sure. But the since this is kind of
- 21:40like a parallel universe to, to the, the, the OG that that it's
- 21:46OK to have those liberties. And I keep thinking of it in the
- 21:51way of like, so we have this box, right.
- 21:53Then we have this box of crayons and we can color whatever we
- 21:57want to like whatever color we want to color inside of the box,
- 22:01as long as we stay within the lines.
- 22:02And that's how I sort of feel like the the liberties that
- 22:05we've been given. It's is that correct?
- 22:08Alright, that's all I'll say. That well, that, but that's
- 22:10that's the nice thing about a soft reboot is is, yeah, as long
- 22:13as it's the same shape and color.
- 22:15Like that's. Fine, but like, mess with it.
- 22:18Have fun with. It it's fine is because it's
- 22:21also that goes way back to Jim Henson's days of best idea wins.
- 22:27You know it doesn't matter if it's not in character like
- 22:30continuity is not as important as is this good is.
- 22:33This fun is. This is are we getting the
- 22:35message across? And it's just good TV.
- 22:40Yeah, for sure. So Gobo does not know what to do
- 22:45now that they're they're in this place.
- 22:47And Wembley suggests that he think about the one Fraggle that
- 22:49he turns to for inspiration. And I like this moment.
- 22:52Moki's like, yes, me, but do I have it in me at the moment?
- 22:56And she's just immediately ignored.
- 23:00Moki's self-confidence is truly delusional, but it's I.
- 23:07I have so much respect for it. It's true, we can all use a
- 23:10little bit of that, I think. Yeah, right.
- 23:14I love delulu. I don't know if the kids are
- 23:15still saying delulu, but. I think I'm I think I'm too old
- 23:20to know what that means. Delusional.
- 23:23Delusional. Delulu.
- 23:26Oh, Delu. OK, yeah, that's a new one for
- 23:30me. Well, I can't use it now if if
- 23:32the kids are already not using it.
- 23:34I'm I'm I'm behind the times on delulu we.
- 23:36We start using it and then the kids stop.
- 23:39Right, that's how it works. Yeah, you.
- 23:41Get to. Kill all the slang.
- 23:43Once the adults figured out how to dab, that was the that was
- 23:46the death of the day. Yes.
- 23:51So Gobo Wembley revisit the story of how Traveling Matt
- 23:55discovered the radish and they cleared their throats and they
- 23:58continue to clear their throats as a long moment to them
- 24:00clearing their throats. It's very cute and they
- 24:04flashback to the story of young traveling mat and he has this
- 24:07like flowing blonde hair. He's got a bushy eyebrows, a big
- 24:11bushy orange mustache. He's wearing like an Indiana
- 24:15Jones hat and he's got the whip and he's like striking a pose
- 24:19like Captain Morgan with his leg up.
- 24:22It's pretty great 'cause I would actually buy AT shirt with this
- 24:25mat on it looking very heroic. Oh, that's a great idea.
- 24:29That's a good idea. Yeah.
- 24:31Yeah. Henson Licensing, are you
- 24:32listening? And I also appreciate that as
- 24:36he's doing this, there's an ink spot behind him that's like kind
- 24:39of just lounging and like, not really paying attention to him.
- 24:43And we see him like breakthrough a Rockwall.
- 24:46And he goes into the Gorg's garden.
- 24:47Junior Gorg sees him, presumably the first time Junior has seen a
- 24:51Fraggle. I don't know.
- 24:53And he runs it. Matt.
- 24:55Matt dodges him. It's all kind of happening in
- 24:57slow motion. He whips Junior's legs around
- 25:00the ankles and it makes him fall over.
- 25:03And then Matt discovers the Gorg's garden, and it's full of
- 25:07radishes, and the age of radishes has begun.
- 25:11And that's it. That's how we did it.
- 25:15We're going to talk a lot in this episode about how, you
- 25:18know, discovering something, quote UN quote, discovering
- 25:20something does not actually necessarily discovery if you're
- 25:24not the first person to find it. But even within the context of
- 25:27the story, like I guess, yeah, sure, he's the first Fraggle to
- 25:31find radishes, but like, obviously someone else's is
- 25:34already like knows enough about radishes to be able to cultivate
- 25:38them in a in a farm. So this story is full of holes
- 25:42is what I'm saying. Can't sneak anything happen.
- 25:48Yeah, right. So the Fraggles start to explore
- 25:54The Cave. They're looking all these
- 25:56statues and one of them looks very realistic and is in color.
- 26:00The rest of them are like Gray. This one is multi colored.
- 26:03It's so realistic. It looks like it's alive and it
- 26:06is alive. It's leader, as we've been
- 26:09discussing, voiced by Catherine O'Hara Legend and performed by
- 26:13you, Kira. What?
- 26:15What a cool thing you got to do. What a treat.
- 26:19Johnny asked me about it, and I was like, both immediately
- 26:22intimidated and incredibly excited.
- 26:25Yeah, it's. I don't even know what else to
- 26:27say. Like I got to do a puppet for
- 26:29Catherine O'Hara. That's rad.
- 26:31That's super rad. So first of all, you mentioned
- 26:36earlier we were, we were talking obviously about like getting
- 26:39Catherine O'hara's intonation of like how she speaks or how she
- 26:44does character. But you, you kind of casually
- 26:46mentions that you're also trying to copy Gobo a little bit.
- 26:51So what does that look like to you?
- 26:53Or is it even possible to like, tell us exactly what you were
- 26:56doing to try to mimic Gobo's style?
- 27:01Well, it's and it's Johnny's gobo too.
- 27:04So it's like who I think has a little more like pep than the OG
- 27:13than Jerry Nelson gobo. So yeah, just trying to keep and
- 27:18I mean, the the costume does a ton of work for me already.
- 27:21And the shape, like she's gobo shaped so little things like the
- 27:28way that Johnny wiggles when he's puppeteering gobo or like
- 27:34does a little tail waggle when he's dancing and the sort of
- 27:38like he has a kind of looseness. To.
- 27:43Him in terms of head gestures and kind of like nodding to
- 27:47punctuate things. This feels very strange to say
- 27:50out loud. Right.
- 27:51Yeah, I realized as I was asking the question like it's such a
- 27:54weird thing of like, how do you, can you tell me how you move
- 27:57your arm? Like what AI get?
- 28:00That's not easy, Yeah. Oh, but it's it's completely
- 28:03valid to think about. Did you ever do like theater
- 28:05classes or improv stuff? Yeah.
- 28:11Did you ever do the thing where someone goes in the inside of
- 28:13the circle and walks, and then you'd have to walk behind them
- 28:15and imitate how they walk? No, I don't know that one.
- 28:19OK, that's that's literally all it is.
- 28:20It's just an exercise in changing your 'cause you don't
- 28:25really think about your walking pattern, thinking about changing
- 28:28that to find someone else's pace, find where they're leading
- 28:32from physically, just looking for those little details.
- 28:35And I think that's sort of the, that's the main way that that
- 28:39energy came into leader was trying to just find some of the
- 28:43same physical hallmarks as Johnny Bobo.
- 28:47And a lot of that has to do with that confidence.
- 28:49Sort of like here I am. It's not quite, it's not quite a
- 28:54Peter Pan thing, but it's close to a Peter Pan thing.
- 28:57You're talking about like, as you know, like arms out on your
- 29:01on your hips, you're fits on your hips.
- 29:04Yeah, like your hands on your hips and your head is up and
- 29:08you're around and you're active and you're engaged and you're
- 29:12confident 'cause you're in the lead.
- 29:15Right. Yeah, this is this is that weird
- 29:17thing. I've seen other puppeteers do
- 29:19this really it's for like the the most famous of puppeteers,
- 29:23you know, like the Jim Henson, Frank Oz, Jerry Nelson types
- 29:26that like they can, they can say, oh, well, Jim moves his
- 29:30hand in a Figure 8 and you know, Jerry Nelson drop syllables and
- 29:34like there's all these little hints and I would never in a
- 29:39million years be able to like enunciate that myself.
- 29:43But once other people say it, you go.
- 29:44Oh. Yeah, like if they do do that,
- 29:47like John Tartaglia is one of those two.
- 29:49And I think that's because he's all over this show that I've
- 29:52started to notice, you know, when he's playing someone other
- 29:54than Gobo and I'm like, that's Johnny.
- 29:56I could tell. Like I could tell like the way
- 29:57they're moving, it's very like, like you said it, like the head
- 30:00moves. He's very wiggly.
- 30:01He's very side to side. You know, certain dance moves,
- 30:04especially when the when there's choreography, you could tell
- 30:07like that. One where he's like twisting the
- 30:09shoulders. Yeah, yeah, he moves all the.
- 30:11Time the shoulder? Yeah, head of static.
- 30:14That's very. Yeah, yeah.
- 30:17Same thing. There are scenes that obviously
- 30:20I wasn't there on the day for whatever reason, I just wasn't
- 30:23part of that scene. And they'll be a little
- 30:26background character that has a moment and I'll do the same
- 30:28thing. I'll go, OK, based on how
- 30:31they're moving or how that in like who's that in there?
- 30:35And there's been a few Andy award.
- 30:38It's I feel like I can always spot Andy.
- 30:40I'm like, Oh yeah, that's Andy. OK, but Andy.
- 30:45But yeah, I love that you're you're doing that too while
- 30:47you're watching. That's so fun.
- 30:49I mean, that's the benefit to like, being the kind of nerd
- 30:52that I am and also like being on my 4th rewatch of the show where
- 30:56I can like, yeah, really start to look at, OK, I know, I know
- 30:59the plot, but like, what's happening, right?
- 31:01Over there in that little. Corner.
- 31:04Yeah. So leader.
- 31:07Which by the way, let's just one more thing about Leader.
- 31:11We're going to see in a second that all these fraggles have
- 31:14interesting names, but Leader seems like such a like a generic
- 31:17title. Do you know the background
- 31:19behind why Leader is called Leader besides the obvious of of
- 31:22her being the leader? Nope.
- 31:25No. That's fine.
- 31:28I kind of thought like maybe like, so we know that gobo is a
- 31:32lighting term, maybe leader is too.
- 31:34But I don't know. I'm making that up.
- 31:37All right. Well, we'll, we'll table that.
- 31:40Maybe it'll come to us. So she invites all the other
- 31:45lost Fraggles out and they start to sing their first song of the
- 31:49episode, which is the Lost Fraggle Rock theme song with
- 31:53lyrics like Hide yourself away underneath the rock today, lose
- 31:57the light of day underneath the rock.
- 32:00And we meet four out of five of the Fraggle 5, the lost Fraggle
- 32:055. There's leader Wrigley is in
- 32:09place of Wembley, both names of stadium, famous stadiums, Soupy,
- 32:15which is Boober's doppelganger, and Run and Jump, which is Reds,
- 32:20which is what a name Run and Jump is.
- 32:22Yeah. Really tells you everything you
- 32:23need to know. Exactly.
- 32:27And they all look like they're doppelgangers.
- 32:29They're all different colors of different details, kind of mix,
- 32:32like, like Run and Jump has one ponytail instead of two, that
- 32:35sort of thing. And yeah, it's a really catchy
- 32:39song. And as Moki points out, there's
- 32:42something spiritually familiar about it, and we may never know
- 32:45what that is. Who's?
- 32:47To say. Who's to say, But that's fun.
- 32:52I love that little nice little detail to just like give them
- 32:54their own little theme song and, you know, kind of imitate the
- 32:58opening of the of the main show. Any other thoughts about that
- 33:02song before we move on? Anything that was really fun or
- 33:04exciting to do with that number. Well, the choreo, the quarry was
- 33:09like, that was also just like the opening, you know what I
- 33:12mean? Just like the opening.
- 33:13So like to be able to revisit that with people who might not
- 33:17have been as close to the camera that we're like way deep in the
- 33:21background. It's just like, OK, come on,
- 33:23guys. Like we're on Season 2.
- 33:25We're. Putting you right on the front
- 33:27in this one. Like for them to have that
- 33:30opportunity to like get to do their version of the opening was
- 33:34was pretty, pretty cool. And I think it was it was cool
- 33:37for them as well. Yeah, yeah, absolutely.
- 33:41Actually, this is probably a good opportunity to talk about
- 33:45these 4 characters. We'll get to our fifth one in a
- 33:51little bit once once they show up.
- 33:52But so we were talking earlier at the top of this episode about
- 33:57doubling and, you know, multiple people playing the same
- 34:01character. But here we've got literally
- 34:03we've got, you know, someone playing Wembley and someone else
- 34:06playing a Wembley, look alike, sound alike and same for all
- 34:10four of these characters. So I don't know if I really have
- 34:14a question here. It's just it's just so
- 34:16interesting. I'll just I'll just keep
- 34:18talking. It's so interesting to see like
- 34:21characters doing impressions which we don't see on Fraggle
- 34:25Rock very often. I feel like Muppets do it every
- 34:28so often. Like I'm thinking specifically
- 34:29of the the mad advertising frogs from Muppets Take Manhattan,
- 34:34that they're all kind of doing Kermit the Frog impressions the
- 34:36way they speak, making fun of gym a little bit.
- 34:40But here, yeah, we've got a few more of those.
- 34:43I don't know. Do you guys have any thoughts on
- 34:45on, you know, doing doing impressions that are just a
- 34:48little bit off for like specifically for the camera?
- 34:51I mean, in in this episode, I could say that it what made it
- 34:54easy were were that the lines were so were so quintessentially
- 35:01similar to what the OG Fraggles would have said.
- 35:04You know what I mean? Like what the Fraggle 5 would
- 35:06have said that it was I, I think and was easier to slip into a
- 35:12lot of the impersonations than if they were just like, you
- 35:15know, random lines that maybe weren't written as, as
- 35:21succinctly, you know what I mean?
- 35:23Yeah, I could see that like, like if I'm making this up, but
- 35:27if like Soupy was like really fun loving and exciting and you
- 35:31know, like different from boober, then that wouldn't
- 35:33necessarily be a boober impression.
- 35:35That would just be someone who kind of looks like Boober.
- 35:37So this way it's like, Nope, they're like the same guy.
- 35:40Just do, just do your boober. Best Boober.
- 35:44We all love Soupy and Uber by the way, that was like, we all
- 35:47know Fraggles are ace Arrow, but like we were shipping Soupy and
- 35:52Buber hard. They're like, it's a neat cute
- 35:55of the century. Look at these two.
- 35:58Rules. Oh, I kind of like that idea, to
- 36:01be honest. Especially, Yeah, we we went
- 36:04into, you know, a whole metaphor for for orientation with Buber
- 36:10in Season 1. And Ali Eisner plays Soupy and,
- 36:16you know, Ali is, is non binary as well.
- 36:19And like, it's just like there's all this stuff that could be
- 36:20going on behind the scenes and all this conversation about
- 36:24gender and identity that just happens throughout Fraggle Rock
- 36:27that I don't know, maybe, maybe they're perfect person.
- 36:30Is the person who's exactly like them you.
- 36:33Could be that like Studio Ghibli sort of romance where nothing
- 36:37actually happens but you can tell they both deeply impactful,
- 36:41just like doing their laundry and not even looking at each
- 36:44other or making their soup. They're both total Sundare, so
- 36:48it's, you know. Yeah, I love this idea for them.
- 36:54We should also point out Run and Jump is played by Ingrid Hansen,
- 37:00who does a fantastic job, and Wrigley is Andy Hayward.
- 37:06And yeah, I mean. There's no.
- 37:08Question. These are all talented folks.
- 37:10That. First scene both going.
- 37:12That's one of my favorite moments.
- 37:15Oh. Good.
- 37:18What? What do you mean do?
- 37:19Is there a name for that that grunts?
- 37:20Is it just a Wembley grunt? That's a great question.
- 37:26I wonder if Jordan has a an official title for it.
- 37:29We're gonna find out. We're gonna, we're gonna get to
- 37:30the bottom of this. I feel like that's one of those
- 37:33things where like there's a name.
- 37:34We call this behind the scenes, yeah.
- 37:39Honk. Yeah.
- 37:41Honk. Yeah.
- 37:42Is it a honk? Is it a grunt?
- 37:43Is it AI? Don't know.
- 37:45Is he just revving his motor? Yeah.
- 37:48Happy walk, struggle. Yeah, it's a little bit of a
- 37:51struggle. Yeah, he might have to have like
- 37:54tight joints. At this point in the episode,
- 38:01we're going to check in with Doc and Sprocket, and we'll just go
- 38:03through their whole story real quick so we don't have to jump
- 38:05back and forth. But Doc is trying to figure out
- 38:07how to build wind turbines that could float on the ocean, which
- 38:10is a great idea, by the way. I assume that that's real
- 38:13science. I don't know.
- 38:15It's not my expertise. I'm AII do a Fraggle Rock
- 38:18podcast, not a science podcast. I wiggle dolls.
- 38:22Yeah, exactly. Yeah, for wind power, ocean, I
- 38:26can't, I can't deal with that. But simply sound there we go.
- 38:29That's that's my my point of expertise these.
- 38:35Wind turbines will be. Great for the environments, but
- 38:38just as importantly, the dolphins would think that they
- 38:40look cool. I like that she's got to go to
- 38:45work and she has this great moment where she rips off her
- 38:47jumpsuit like it's like it's like held on by Velcro and she's
- 38:51got her pirate waitress outfit underneath.
- 38:53She did a quick change, and she tells Sprocket that the model
- 38:58has to stay untouched while she's gone so we can collect
- 39:01data. And of course, like, what would
- 39:03you think he was going to do? He immediately breaks the whole
- 39:05thing so the data is incorrect. She comes back, she's really
- 39:11excited. She, you know, Sprocket doesn't
- 39:13tell her the truth. But the best part of this, this
- 39:15whole sequence is that Sprocket has a dream sequence where Doc
- 39:20calls the president of science, is discovered to be a fraud and
- 39:25sent to science jail, and then Sprocket has to visit her in
- 39:29prison. And they do the thing where they
- 39:30touch hands against the glass like Kirk and Spock at the end
- 39:34of Star Trek 2. God is that good?
- 39:40The dream sequences. That that the show in this
- 39:43season has added for Doc has has added so much to make those
- 39:47sequences fun and to give Lily Cooper something really fun and
- 39:51interesting to do other than like be away from the rest of
- 39:54the Fraggle Rock action. Back underneath Fraggle Rock,
- 39:58Gobo hopes that they can connect with the last lost Fraggles
- 40:02because they're just so different.
- 40:04And this is where they all kind of meet their own doppelgangers
- 40:07and they find out that they're all identical except for Moki.
- 40:10Moki doesn't have a counterpart and she's feeling really left
- 40:14out, which is sad. Like I feel like I don't know if
- 40:19this is deliberate. I would be surprised if this was
- 40:20deliberate, but it feels a little bit like before Back to
- 40:23the Rock, whenever there was Fraggle Rock merchandise, Moki
- 40:27was the one who was left out. And it does feel like, yeah, we
- 40:31forgot there was five of them. We only made four.
- 40:34Sorry. Poor Moki.
- 40:38Poor Moki. Alone at the party, A couple.
- 40:41Yeah, Just watching. Everybody else have fun and
- 40:44she's kind of fool herself into thinking it's fine.
- 40:48Yeah, I think like the hardest. The hardest for Moki in that in
- 40:52that episode too is knowing that Langford had a doppelganger and
- 40:57then even. She's like, well, at least I
- 41:00have Lanford here. And then Lanford finds his
- 41:02mushroom buddy, Manford. Manford so cute Dan and.
- 41:12Jen right? Jean Viaf Yeah.
- 41:16So yeah. Yeah, one of.
- 41:18The Calgary Puppeteers. It's delightful, great and and
- 41:23Dan. Garza was the other person you
- 41:24mentioned just getting that last name in there.
- 41:26Dan Garza is is the head of Manford.
- 41:29Yeah, which is great. I just and and I appreciate
- 41:32that. Just like everyone else looks
- 41:35slightly different, Like they could you could have made a
- 41:37second Lanford and just made it blue or something like no, it's
- 41:40a mushroom. Very different.
- 41:43Yeah, he's a. Real fun guy and thank.
- 41:51You should we just end the podcast.
- 41:53Here, just go out with a bang. Got it.
- 41:57I think where are. We going to go from there?
- 42:00Yeah. Really.
- 42:00God. Downer The rest of this
- 42:02episode's going to be Speaking of Downers, Kotterpin introduces
- 42:07herself and all the lost Fraggles laugh because they're
- 42:09like, you can't be a Doozer. Doozers are extinct.
- 42:13And so rather than like them being like, oh, well, obviously
- 42:17there's a Doozer here with these new people who just showed up
- 42:21how to pinch just like like she's starting to feel bad like
- 42:24I don't know what she's feeling bad about, but she's like, they
- 42:26don't believe that I even exist, even though I'm right in front
- 42:30of them, which I guess makes sense too because as a Doozer,
- 42:35she believes in in facts and data.
- 42:37And it's like, look, the the fact is here in front of you,
- 42:41and I am telling you that I am a Doozer.
- 42:43And Nope, they think that's hysterical.
- 42:46Yeah, poor. Poor Cotterpin that.
- 42:49I mean that, like you said earlier, the whole episode is
- 42:52kind of about the concept of revisionist history and
- 43:00convincing yourself of the truth of a history that isn't actually
- 43:06true. So there's definitely some some.
- 43:09Denial happening. Here right, you could have the
- 43:12thing that's true right in front of your face, but if you believe
- 43:14so strongly that no, of course Doozers are extinct that so
- 43:19logically you cannot be a Doozer that's.
- 43:24That's. Just how it's going to be that.
- 43:27Reminds me so. Much of Did you ever watch the
- 43:30sketch comedy show The State? Yes, yes, yes.
- 43:35Yes, Kira, it was. It was a sketch comedy show on
- 43:38MTV in the 90s and like all of the people from the state went
- 43:42on to be like the folks from We know 911 and what Hot American
- 43:46Summer and like all these other cult classic things.
- 43:48And there's a sketch short sketch called The Bearded Men of
- 43:52Space Station 11. And it's like 4 guys are on a
- 43:56space station and they all these big beards and another person
- 43:59comes in and he says I'm here to tell you, the Bearded Men of
- 44:03Space Station 11 that beards cannot grow in space, therefore
- 44:07you're all aliens. And they go beg to differ.
- 44:13We grow. Beards because.
- 44:14We're the beard of men of space Station 11.
- 44:16And then first guy goes, no, you're not.
- 44:19You're obviously aliens. And like, that's the whole
- 44:21sketch. It's just a very calm
- 44:22conversation where they're trying to explain your data is
- 44:26wrong and we're the proof right in front of you and they just
- 44:29don't want to hear it. And that's the whole thing.
- 44:33It's very funny. It's funnier than I make it.
- 44:34Sound. I like the title.
- 44:38The bearded man of. Space Station 11.
- 44:40It's good stuff. You should also watch the.
- 44:42State it's a great show. Oh yeah.
- 44:44The. State is a.
- 44:44Great show. Absolutely.
- 44:46What's interesting about that, the state sketch and and this
- 44:49Fraggle sketch as well, is that it is still so timely.
- 44:55Yeah, it's like. No, if I.
- 44:58Say something enough times you're going to believe it.
- 45:01It's that best base of like, wait, no, but there are facts,
- 45:05right? So anyway, unfortunately, why?
- 45:09Why is? That why is it that that has to
- 45:11be so timely. I hate that.
- 45:13I don't want I don't want the world to be this way.
- 45:15I know, but it was timely. Then as well, which makes me
- 45:18believe like did did I just did I just literally like start
- 45:21paying attention that's. Not easy going.
- 45:26Anyway, yeah, I could early and. This would have been early.
- 45:29Internet days then I, I don't know, I feel like the ability to
- 45:34get truthful and reliable information when the Internet
- 45:39started and started to become more popularly used, I think we
- 45:44had an increase in that. Like we started doing a good job
- 45:48of artifact checking and then somewhere in the last 10 years
- 45:52or so we've just kind of it it's completely slingshotted around
- 45:58into the trash. Like it's so hard to distinguish
- 46:04real facts, real science, real, real information about what's
- 46:08happening in the world from what is perhaps driven by a different
- 46:14motive. So it's or even not driven by a
- 46:17motive, but just driven by someone's confirmation bias.
- 46:19So I don't know I that's just my theory about the Internet, but
- 46:25people will always benefit from having their own narrative of
- 46:29how things should be so. And in this case.
- 46:35How? Things should be but also.
- 46:36Like and what was or what, you know what I mean?
- 46:40Like literally revisionist history, right?
- 46:42I mean and things that like we did.
- 46:44Think like that. We maybe even had good reason to
- 46:47think, you know, like this whole story about travelling, Matt
- 46:50discovering radishes like there was no one to disprove him.
- 46:53And as far as Matt knew, he was discovering radishes.
- 46:57So, you know, things that were facts can be proven as like
- 47:03actually we've learned, we've got new information and we can
- 47:05change the, you know, the way that we think, but you have to
- 47:08be willing to change and adapt and, and listen.
- 47:12And honestly, that's why this show, Fraggle Rock is so
- 47:15important because because we're not necessarily delivering
- 47:18facts. This isn't like a kind of show
- 47:20where we're teaching, you know, letters and numbers and history
- 47:23and etcetera, but we're hopefully teaching kids who are
- 47:26watching. You got to do your research.
- 47:29You got to listen to the right people.
- 47:30You have to be willing to adapt. You have to be willing to, you
- 47:34know, like hear something that you thought otherwise and be
- 47:38willing to change your own way of thinking.
- 47:40So this is very important stuff. I'd love that you flagged
- 47:44adaptation. Because, I mean, we always see
- 47:46the messages about interconnectedness and
- 47:48cooperation and working. With others.
- 47:53But yeah, adaptation is a huge theme in in both, both of the
- 47:58new seasons for sure. You know, working with what
- 48:01happens when the water goes, what happens when strawberries
- 48:04show up and the radishes go down.
- 48:07And it's by working together that they're able to adapt.
- 48:11So I hadn't, I hadn't clocked adaptation as a major theme
- 48:15before. So thank you for that, Joe.
- 48:20Yeah. I mean, I, I wish I could take
- 48:22credit for it, but I think it's, it's just there.
- 48:24It just seems so prevalent on Fraggle Rock.
- 48:28And you know what? This is a good show, you guys.
- 48:30This is like a really smart show that like like might actually
- 48:34end war as Jim Henson wanted. Oh God, wouldn't that be great?
- 48:39Wouldn't that be great? But.
- 48:40Honestly, baby steps, and this is the kind of baby steps we're
- 48:42talking about, you know, any, any little bit here, any anyone
- 48:46who's watching who's going to take a lesson home with it.
- 48:48That's that's the goal, Yeah. So meanwhile, while all this is
- 48:55going on in the Gorg's garden, that dust storm is still going
- 48:59on. And the best part about it is
- 49:01there's a tumbleweed that has like a face and it's rolling by
- 49:05going tumble, tumble, tumble. Who is that and how did that
- 49:09happen? I mean, like, how did the hell
- 49:10did you guys do that? That shot?
- 49:13Oh, that, That was me. I puppeteer it was RC it only
- 49:17all that it did was just move in a circle and then they digitally
- 49:23then moved it across the screen, across the screen.
- 49:26So they took a static shot of it just tumbling with me.
- 49:29Like tumble tumble. Like doing it off of an RC thing
- 49:33but so secret. That's so interesting.
- 49:36So you're so it. Is.
- 49:37Rotating in real life where like, I mean, if they were going
- 49:41to have it, if they were going to put it in in post anyway to
- 49:44have it move across the screen, I guess they could have had it
- 49:47rotate. Just rotate, yeah.
- 49:49They were rotating, went to an extra mile there.
- 49:51Yeah, yeah. But also like I.
- 49:53Think once it started to rotate because I just kept shooting it
- 49:57like it started to like. Fall apart a little bit because.
- 50:01It was, I mean, it wasn't made of actual tumbleweeds, but it
- 50:03was made to look like tumbleweeds and it was on this
- 50:05mechanism. So it was just like the more
- 50:07it's fun. It was just like, oh God, what
- 50:09is it turning? Into I don't know what.
- 50:11Kind of creature that is, but just like this like machine
- 50:14thing with like all of this like tumbleweed stuff, kind of
- 50:16separating from it. So they like slow down, slow it
- 50:19down. Yeah, that's kind of amazing.
- 50:21It's also. Very much like a tumbleweed like
- 50:23it would. That would happen, you know,
- 50:25that We would break apart. Yeah.
- 50:27Yeah. I assume I don't live anywhere.
- 50:29Near where there's tumbleweeds. I don't know what they look
- 50:31like. Just like that with mouth.
- 50:35Right. Film it.
- 50:39Because then you still get a sense of gravity, right?
- 50:41Because the tumbleweeds would tumble as it moves.
- 50:44So you still have that horizontal movement, but if
- 50:46you're turning it, you still, I mean, yeah, it would be static,
- 50:50you know? Tumbleweed, but it.
- 50:51You still might get that sense of like this is that direction
- 50:55is where the ground is rather than if you just look thing.
- 50:58Held it in the same. Spot and went turn, turn, turn,
- 51:01yeah. I don't know what I'm talking
- 51:04about. I'm no, you absolutely do.
- 51:06It's like. The sympathetic movement of like
- 51:08the, the, the, the little hay or whatever was, I can't even
- 51:12remember what it they were like little sticks.
- 51:13It's just like they were they were feeling gravity in the way
- 51:16that a tumbleweed does when you see it kind of roll tumbleweed
- 51:20talk. No, you're you're.
- 51:22You're totally you're. Totally on point.
- 51:23And this is the kind of thing where I feel like you all are so
- 51:27good about going the extra mile and, you know, just doing a
- 51:31little bit extra to make it feel real, where like, maybe nobody
- 51:36would have noticed it. But also in this day and age
- 51:38with the days of streaming, where we're probably going to be
- 51:42watching these episodes over and over and over again and really,
- 51:44like, dissecting them. And I'm not talking about like,
- 51:46just me as the fans, but like, you know, kids or parents
- 51:48watching at home. You know, if a kid is really
- 51:50into a show and they want to watch it, you know, many times
- 51:53that like, eventually. Yeah.
- 51:56And if there's like scenes that make it look not real or make it
- 52:00feel less in the world, then you're really going to start to
- 52:03see them after a few. Times and so.
- 52:04By adding that weight, by letting it rotate and you know,
- 52:08whatever, whatever it is that you have to do it really, I
- 52:12think it adds a lot to the rewatch ability, even if you
- 52:14never really notice it well. And that's like, I think.
- 52:18You know, in the direction sometimes that like that, that
- 52:21this is like a way bigger conversation And and I don't
- 52:23want to derail it, but like in in the direction that most
- 52:27puppet shows are going nowadays where they they won't have a
- 52:31full set. Like I worked on Slumberkins,
- 52:33which didn't, which had a digital set.
- 52:35Like it was even more important that the practical pieces felt
- 52:40real and that, you know, if the puppets were stepping on
- 52:44something that it felt it felt real and that that wasn't
- 52:47digital, you know, and that wasn't digitized.
- 52:49And I think that we really pay attention to that sort of stuff
- 52:52on Fraggle because the moment that somebody can see, can
- 52:57clock, you know, that's digital. You disengage because you, you,
- 53:02you literally disconnect as a human.
- 53:04It's like there's just something unspoken where you understand
- 53:08that there's another person that there's a person connected to
- 53:12that puppet that's being performed as opposed to just
- 53:15watching something animated, which animation is great.
- 53:18But if you've even noticed with animation, animation is becoming
- 53:21more and more realistic in order to connect and, and, or you know
- 53:24what I mean? So it's like we're all striving
- 53:26for the same thing, but just in different ways, I think.
- 53:31But. It's bounce off what you were
- 53:33just saying, you know, and animation can look very
- 53:35realistic, but the thing that we've learned is that over time,
- 53:39doesn't matter how realistic it looks today, 10 years from now,
- 53:42it's going to look old because animation get better.
- 53:45And it's funny, 'cause I was, I just the other day is Speaking
- 53:48of Catherine O'Hara, I went to go see the New Beetlejuice
- 53:50movie. And there are a lot of scenes in
- 53:55there. A lot of scenes where you could
- 53:57tell they went the extra mile and did practical effects.
- 54:00And there's puppets and there's real sets and like all the stuff
- 54:03that like Tim Burton didn't really use in his last few
- 54:06movies. And then there's one scene where
- 54:09there's a cake and it's oozing this green liquid and the whole
- 54:12cake is, is CG and all the liquid is CG.
- 54:15And it took me out of it because so much of the movie was real
- 54:18with CG just kind of, you know, improving things just a little
- 54:22bit. And there and then suddenly
- 54:23you've got this big animated piece and like, who cares?
- 54:27You know, because it doesn't look as real as a puppet.
- 54:29It doesn't look like I can reach out and touch it.
- 54:31It doesn't doesn't make me grossed out by seeing, you know,
- 54:35the green goo come out of this, this cake.
- 54:38So, you know, that's it. I mean, that's really brings me
- 54:41back. I think Fraggle Rock Back to the
- 54:43Rock is such a shining example of that because the CG that you
- 54:48all use on the show is so minimal just to enhance that
- 54:54everything feels real. I never noticed the CG on the
- 54:56show and that's, that's just so cool.
- 55:00The weight of a puppet. It really makes a difference.
- 55:04I I mentioned. This when I was on for the pride
- 55:07thing so my apologies if I'm repeating myself, but we had
- 55:10this book of special effects in my house when I was a kid.
- 55:14Just like how film special effects work.
- 55:16Things like the matte paintings or stop motion, all the Foley,
- 55:21like all of the real practical effect information.
- 55:26And then at the end it was like 2 pages on, oh, CGI is coming.
- 55:30Is this the wave of the future? Which I was like, whatever,
- 55:34there's a dragon in there. It kind of looks.
- 55:35But the rest of it I was always. Fascinated by and they.
- 55:39Talk about also fire and water and how you do all of that in a
- 55:42film. And that's a different category
- 55:45because then why not make it safe if you can?
- 55:47But there's something about like seeing a tactile space and
- 55:55seeing tactile things on screen where you're like, I could go
- 55:59there, I could go there and I could be part of this and I
- 56:04could touch that and pick it up and, you know, feel the texture
- 56:09of it. And that's it's, I don't know,
- 56:13I'm not I, I, I should learn more about the psychology of it
- 56:15because it's so fascinating, but that that word tactility always
- 56:20sticks for me. I want to see things on screen
- 56:23that I feel like I could have a full sensory experience of.
- 56:29And you don't always get that with CG if it's not well
- 56:33executed. The other thing that that that.
- 56:37Also, does having those tactile, tactile things, tactile elements
- 56:40to it is that it doesn't inspire you as you know as a young
- 56:46artist? Or whatever to want.
- 56:48To create those sort of sort of things or want to be in that
- 56:51world. So it's just like it, it, it
- 56:54just everything kind of goes full circle, you know what I
- 56:56mean? Oh, wow, I, I can make that.
- 56:58And that's when you see little kids, you know, make drawings or
- 57:02their own versions of characters in the show or I don't know, I
- 57:07think I think that having those elements is very important and.
- 57:13You know, I think especially. For kids entertainments to feel
- 57:17like you could walk down the street and run into Big Bird
- 57:21because Big Bird is real. That like you could turn a
- 57:25corner and like you could find yourself on Sesame Street, you
- 57:27could find a fraggle hole and the Fraggles are there.
- 57:30And I don't think you feel that way.
- 57:31About. You know, Frozen, SpongeBob, you
- 57:35know Louie. I mean, they're not that any of
- 57:37these are bad for any reason, but there's always things that
- 57:41disconnect from reality for anything that's animated, but
- 57:43from puppets and for practical effects.
- 57:46And to be able to have that, not just the like you said, like you
- 57:52could reach out and touch them, but like that they could
- 57:54actually be real. They could be in your in your
- 57:56real world. And if you're teaching
- 58:00something, well, not only are. Right they, right they are, yes.
- 58:05Right. And if you're teaching
- 58:07something, if you know that, like that character is in the
- 58:09real world and they're telling you something important, that's
- 58:11I think that's going to sink in for a kid a lot more than it
- 58:14would if it was, you know, a CG creation that exists on some
- 58:19other plane of existence. Totally.
- 58:23Yeah, wow. We.
- 58:25Got real deep. On in the weeds on this one.
- 58:27I know. Yeah.
- 58:29Do you? Want to drink a water?
- 58:31Before we get back to whatever the Gorgs are doing, the Gorgs
- 58:35Speaking of, of actually Speaking of, of real locations,
- 58:38the Gorgs go into a new place that I don't know if we've seen
- 58:42before. They're inside the shed, the
- 58:45Gorg's Gorg's garden. I, I don't, maybe we saw this on
- 58:48the old show. I didn't have a memory of it.
- 58:50I didn't bother to look it up. But like, that's pretty cool.
- 58:53Like just for the scene, they had to get out of the storm and
- 58:55they go right into that shed and it's just full of Gorg stuff.
- 58:58It's all shitty in there. And the light dappling through
- 59:03the windows, right? Doesn't it look so pretty?
- 59:06Oh my God. I.
- 59:07Love the lighting. Again, it puts them in a real.
- 59:09Space, you know, takes advantage of what they.
- 59:11Have there? On, you know, in the Gorg's
- 59:14universe, and I don't know, we always wonder what was in that
- 59:18little shed back there. Now we know it's it's gorge
- 59:21stuff. It's gorge stuff.
- 59:22It's almost. Like, that moment, to me, sort
- 59:25of reminded me of when I was little.
- 59:27I always imagined what was inside of Oscar the Grouch's
- 59:30trash can. And I always wanted the camera
- 59:32to go down into the trash can to, like, let me just see his
- 59:35house. And in my head, like, I always
- 59:39imagined it anyway. But now we know it's in the
- 59:41shed. That's right.
- 59:44It's not a man cave. Or a org cave.
- 59:47It's like it's a shed. Yeah.
- 59:49I mean, is there anything? Cool in there that you guys
- 59:51noticed. I I just assume it's all I
- 59:54didn't. I didn't notice anything like
- 59:55Easter eggs or whatever, but maybe there is.
- 59:57I think there were. Yeah, I'd be.
- 1:00:01Astonished. If there weren't Easter eggs in
- 1:00:03there, Yeah, right. Well, especially.
- 1:00:06You know, it's probably a lot. Of old props from from the old
- 1:00:09show. Because why would you create all
- 1:00:11new stuff? You probably just literally take
- 1:00:12whatever's in the drawer and just Chuck it on the floor, put
- 1:00:16it all over the table, hanging off the walls.
- 1:00:19Yeah, I don't, I don't know. Yeah, All right.
- 1:00:21Well, we're. Going to have to go back and.
- 1:00:22Do some pausing. Really.
- 1:00:25Do some research. We'll have the Muppet Wiki folks
- 1:00:27tell us. OK, here's a list of all the
- 1:00:29reuse props that are in the Gorg's shed.
- 1:00:32Paul says to Junior that they listen to their Gorg sesters
- 1:00:36without questioning or updating their methods.
- 1:00:38They used the Gorgomax. They had a ton of waste.
- 1:00:41Where did they go wrong? And.
- 1:00:46It turns out they look at their at their book and that was a
- 1:00:48list of what not to do Classic mistake.
- 1:00:56I do, I do love. I have to.
- 1:00:57Give Dan Garza and Ben Duerchet some props here for their
- 1:01:03performances, Junior, because junior's, like, he has this
- 1:01:07explosion of just like, like we were supposed to learn from our
- 1:01:10mistakes. And now history is repeating
- 1:01:13itself. And he's a little nail on the
- 1:01:15head there for the lesson. But he's not wrong.
- 1:01:18Yeah. Yeah, can I?
- 1:01:21Can I? Just say here I I've been
- 1:01:23meaning to send this to all the Gorg performers, Amy and Ingrid
- 1:01:29and Frank and Andy and Ben and Dan, and I just didn't get
- 1:01:33around to it because my brain is garbage.
- 1:01:36But I'll say it now that just watching the Gorg work on this
- 1:01:39season, you talked at the. Beginning of the episode about.
- 1:01:43Levelling up, Oh my God, like if you were fantastic in season 1,
- 1:01:48just the level of nuance and like synchronicity with all the
- 1:01:54Gorg performers is incredible. Like that was some of my
- 1:01:58favorite stuff to watch this season was you guys just being
- 1:02:02so in tune and MA especially so. The you and.
- 1:02:07Ingrid worked so beautifully together with Ma this.
- 1:02:10Oh, God, thank you, thank you. Yeah, Major, Major.
- 1:02:13Kudos to our to our Gorg performers because wow, like
- 1:02:19beautiful work. Yeah, I think that.
- 1:02:21That all Gorg performers really learned a lot from season 1 as
- 1:02:27to what they were already able to do and then and how to
- 1:02:32improve right. Like so I need I would like to
- 1:02:36be able to see better or I would like to be able to any of those
- 1:02:40things. And also I know that creating
- 1:02:45MA, I would not be able to do it without Ingrid.
- 1:02:48So getting Ingrid's input throughout it all is helps helps
- 1:02:54me as well. So what are you physically able
- 1:02:57to do? And so then I can sort of dance
- 1:03:00around that to allow. Ingrid's version of Mata.
- 1:03:05Come out as well. So I, yeah, it's, it was a big
- 1:03:10learning curve and, and I'm so pleased that it's, it's visible
- 1:03:16because it, it felt a lot easier second season.
- 1:03:22It's really cool. Like anytime I'm working on a
- 1:03:24new puppet character, that's part of the thing you consider
- 1:03:27is what are the physical capabilities of an actual
- 1:03:31puppet? I can't, if I can't do a move
- 1:03:33that looks like XYZ, that's not going to be part of this
- 1:03:37character's vocabulary. And so you and Ingrid have this
- 1:03:40whole other layer where you have to, Ingrid has to consider like
- 1:03:47the built puppets capabilities and then you're considering that
- 1:03:51plus Ingrid's capabilities, which for Ingrid is quite a lot
- 1:03:55and she has. To work with.
- 1:03:58Whatever the face is able to offer and whatever you're able
- 1:04:01to do with the RC controls. So that's.
- 1:04:05That. That's a Galaxy brand moment.
- 1:04:08I like that. And and.
- 1:04:10Just to add on to that. Too specifically talking about
- 1:04:13Ma Gorg our one of our big, I don't want to say complaints,
- 1:04:17but like one of the things that we kind of came out of season 1
- 1:04:21hoping for more of was like get Ma out of the castle because we
- 1:04:25never saw her. We didn't know she had legs back
- 1:04:28there, You know, like she's just always kind of dunking through
- 1:04:32the window or like through the door, you know, whatever.
- 1:04:34We didn't really see much of her, and especially in the back
- 1:04:37half of this season, we're getting so much good MOG Org
- 1:04:40stuff, which I'd never thought even on the old show we don't,
- 1:04:43we didn't get great MOG Org stuff.
- 1:04:45So yeah, it's great to see it. Not only, I mean, because it's
- 1:04:50I'm going to add a third person. Like you're talking about your
- 1:04:52performance with Ingrid to create Ma, but there's also,
- 1:04:56it's also in the writing where like Ma's given good stuff to do
- 1:04:59and you really have an opportunity to show off and to
- 1:05:02create this character. So now Season 3 got to get them
- 1:05:07some songs like the Gorgs don't really do they sing at all in
- 1:05:11the season? Not, not really.
- 1:05:14In the latter half of this. Episode we have the great Amy
- 1:05:17Garcia show. Yeah, that's right, you are
- 1:05:19singing in. This episode, aren't you God, I
- 1:05:21forgot already. We'll get there.
- 1:05:23OK, that's a that's a sign that we got to move on with the story
- 1:05:25so we can get to get to that and talk about that.
- 1:05:27Good God. All right, so Speaking of Ma
- 1:05:30Gorg, she's in this next scene. She's having her conversation
- 1:05:33with Marjorie the trash heap, and Marjorie looks so tiny next
- 1:05:38door. We.
- 1:05:42We were talking about this before we were recording, but
- 1:05:44like, it's, it's we think of the trash heap as being this huge
- 1:05:48pile of garbage. And then once you see her next
- 1:05:50to a gore, you're like, oh, you're like a little leaf pile.
- 1:05:52Yeah, a sensible amount of garbage.
- 1:05:55Right. Yeah.
- 1:05:57It's not anything. To be concerned about?
- 1:05:59No, No. It actually seems.
- 1:06:01Like it's a normal amount of like, yeah, they're composting,
- 1:06:04you know, like it just. Yeah.
- 1:06:05They haven't like backed it up yet.
- 1:06:07Yeah, yeah, Yeah. Exactly.
- 1:06:10So Amy, you are, you're you're doing double duty here.
- 1:06:13You're performing two different characters.
- 1:06:17Was when you were performing in specifically in these scenes
- 1:06:20with Margarine and Ma together, were you just like painfully
- 1:06:24aware of like how do I make sure that I keep these two voices or
- 1:06:27these two personalities separate or as they are built in?
- 1:06:33I was having. Like panic attacks about it.
- 1:06:36I was like, I because you know, everything resonates in your
- 1:06:39head and I was like, they sound exactly the same to me.
- 1:06:41I don't know how to make them different.
- 1:06:44But then when I heard when I heard the recording back of the
- 1:06:47song, I was like, there was like a little bit of a relief and I
- 1:06:51was able to sort of let go and, and be able to to get into it a
- 1:06:56a little bit better. But but yeah.
- 1:07:01And. We.
- 1:07:02We shot because. Obviously like.
- 1:07:06Both of that we, we need, we need elements of, of, of both
- 1:07:13groups of people to be able to do that scene.
- 1:07:15So we shot that scene separately and just kind of digitally glued
- 1:07:20it together, which I think looks really good because it doesn't,
- 1:07:24there's never any actual physical interaction between the
- 1:07:26two of them. So that's what I think sells
- 1:07:28that moment. And the way that the whole thing
- 1:07:31is sort of laid out it you buy it.
- 1:07:35But yeah, it was, it was tricky. And we were like all trying to
- 1:07:40remember what? The.
- 1:07:43Inflections were and what the movements were like.
- 1:07:46I tried to be very, very consistent.
- 1:07:48When I'm working, we're partnering up with people like
- 1:07:52for Ma Gorg. Kira is also inside of Ma Gorg
- 1:07:55as well as Ingrid. So it's the three of us inside
- 1:07:58of of mom to put archery. Oh, sorry.
- 1:08:01Marjorie, sorry. Marjorie, sorry.
- 1:08:02Not Ma. Not enough coffee.
- 1:08:04Sorry. Yeah, you're getting them
- 1:08:07confused. Sorry so inside of.
- 1:08:09Marjorie, there's, there's the three of us.
- 1:08:11And so I, I always try to say vocally consistent and then for
- 1:08:16the three of us to sort of do a little bit of a rehearsal of
- 1:08:19what we all want to see and then continue to record that.
- 1:08:24And the same goes with Ma, you know, just to make sure that we
- 1:08:30get the timing right and and all sort of sync up.
- 1:08:34But yeah, I. Would not.
- 1:08:36I wouldn't, I don't. I don't take any credit for
- 1:08:38that. This is all my two Co workers
- 1:08:42who are just exceptional that make it look that way that that
- 1:08:48is very kind. Of you, but also it's hard to to
- 1:08:50believe you when you say I don't take any credit when you're
- 1:08:53performing too. No, no, like.
- 1:08:56Larger than life characters. Here, no, I feel like it.
- 1:08:59No, but it's I just feel like it was both like vocally it was
- 1:09:02easier. It was easier to perform because
- 1:09:06that groundwork was laid down and because I had had my panic
- 1:09:09attack early, it got it all the way.
- 1:09:13Very efficient. Out of the way.
- 1:09:14Yeah, yeah, yeah. Oh, yeah, that song was fun to
- 1:09:17record. And I, you know, we all had
- 1:09:19joked afterwards, it's like, oh, I want this song to, like, get a
- 1:09:24disco version and just, like, sneak it into all the gay clubs,
- 1:09:28You know what I mean? Like, Oh yeah, be a queen.
- 1:09:32So, so we're we're not quite at at the song yet, but we'll we'll
- 1:09:35talk about it here anyway, because the song comes up in a
- 1:09:37few minutes. But yes, you get a little duet
- 1:09:39with yourself with be a Queen. And you're right, just the title
- 1:09:42alone is like it out of the gay clubs for sure.
- 1:09:45And also like when you sing, you're you're not only are you
- 1:09:49alternating between two different voices, but you're
- 1:09:53almost singing in two different styles where like the trash heap
- 1:09:57gets like the fast, you know, verse stuff here.
- 1:10:00And then Ma is seeing these high notes and like you're just
- 1:10:03showing off all of your Broadway training here, which?
- 1:10:08If people don't know you. Are also a Broadway star.
- 1:10:11Like I think that's that's obvious that you see this song.
- 1:10:14Yes, yes, a star. Don't argue with me on that one.
- 1:10:22No I I have been lucky to have performed on certain shows but
- 1:10:26not a star. But thank you though, you're so
- 1:10:30welcome. OK, we're going to come back to
- 1:10:33the song in a second, but let's let's back up a a hot SEC to to
- 1:10:37this conversation that Ma and Marjorie are having.
- 1:10:40And Ma is jealous that Marjorie has Philo and guns who show her
- 1:10:45so much respect because Ma doesn't get any respect from PA
- 1:10:48and Junior, which is sad to see her admit that.
- 1:10:51Like on the old show and even in the first season, in the first
- 1:10:55half of of this season, back to the Rock, it seemed like she was
- 1:10:58oblivious to it. And now she's, like, finally
- 1:11:00coming to grips with like, oh, they don't.
- 1:11:01They don't even seem to like me very much.
- 1:11:04Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:11:04I mean Junior. Likes her, but that's a
- 1:11:06different. That's another toxic
- 1:11:07relationship in a very different way that we don't need to dive
- 1:11:10into right now, but. That's something for me.
- 1:11:13And my therapist to work out right?
- 1:11:21Marjorie reminds Ma that she is a queen descended from the great
- 1:11:25Gorg Queens of old. And this is one of those moments
- 1:11:29where, like we're talking about Gorg history and I want to know
- 1:11:33more about this. I really, I would love to really
- 1:11:36have the show break into what does like the Gorg Kingdom, the
- 1:11:41Gorg universe look like. You know, what are the
- 1:11:44responses? The historical responsibilities
- 1:11:46of being king of the universe. What did it used to look like?
- 1:11:49Because now it's kind of a joke, but I bet it used to be pretty
- 1:11:51cool and popular, right? Opulent.
- 1:11:55Yeah, Yes, exactly. So yeah, we're getting like a
- 1:11:59taste of that here. And maybe, maybe season 3 we'll
- 1:12:02get a little bit more of whatever that looks like.
- 1:12:07So. Meanwhile.
- 1:12:08Wembley and Wrigley, his his doppelganger are bopping through
- 1:12:12The Cave. They're they're grunting,
- 1:12:13whatever it is that that Wembley's do.
- 1:12:18They pass. Some cave paintings and they see
- 1:12:21these pictures of ancient fraggles with radishes, and
- 1:12:25Wembley learns very quickly that traveling Matt did not discover
- 1:12:29the radishes after all. They're obviously much older,
- 1:12:32but the story about Matt and the radishes gives Gobo so much
- 1:12:35strength that Wembley feels like he needs to hide the truth from
- 1:12:38his friend. And Gobo enters the scene and
- 1:12:40it's a cute shot of Wembley like splaying himself against the
- 1:12:43rock to cover the to like poorly cover by the way the the
- 1:12:47artwork. And I have no idea how they hide
- 1:12:51the puppeteer here because you could.
- 1:12:54It looks like Wembley. He's up on one leg and he's up
- 1:12:56against the rock. And I don't know where Jordan
- 1:13:01is. And it didn't even occur to me
- 1:13:03until like this is my 4th watching of this episode.
- 1:13:05Didn't think about it until today, essentially.
- 1:13:10Are we? This is just.
- 1:13:11Going to be a Fraggle secret, you think?
- 1:13:14Maybe. OK, so.
- 1:13:16Wembley's alive, is what you're telling me, Yes.
- 1:13:19There's no puppeteer. It's just Wembley.
- 1:13:20No, no, no, he. Hasn't a great apartment in
- 1:13:23Calgary? Great, That's perfect.
- 1:13:31That's fine. Let's let's leave that one be a
- 1:13:32secret. Some some things we just got to
- 1:13:34leave on the behind the scenes. The Lost Fraggles are showing
- 1:13:39off their underground farm. They've got mushroom, they got
- 1:13:43gush room, they got shush room. They and you put them all
- 1:13:46together and you get gootine. That's got to be a reference to
- 1:13:50Canada, right, 100? Percent. 100%.
- 1:13:55Great. They actually used to get.
- 1:13:59Well, they called them disco fries at a diner in Toronto, and
- 1:14:04it was like sweet potato fries and regular fries and cheese
- 1:14:09curds and gravy. And I think they put back bacon
- 1:14:12on it too, but that's what those little bowls looked like.
- 1:14:16So that made me chuckle. I'm like, oh, we're doing the
- 1:14:18Lakeview all right. For edible boy, it sounds.
- 1:14:25Delicious. Well, poutine sounds delicious.
- 1:14:28Poutine sounds less delicious. I'm not a big mushroom guy.
- 1:14:32But yes, that sounds great. Also, like, they're eating
- 1:14:34mushrooms, but they have a friend who's a mushroom with
- 1:14:37Manford, Yeah. You don't.
- 1:14:41So what was that, Kira? You don't.
- 1:14:43Eat all mushrooms. Some are good for eating care.
- 1:14:49There's. A concern children.
- 1:14:50'S advertisers ad from the 90s in Canada that's about raccoons
- 1:14:55eating the raccoon saw a delicious looking this and the
- 1:14:59my parents said, oh careful baby, some mushrooms are not for
- 1:15:01raccoons. So that's always what's in my
- 1:15:03head anyway you eat some and some you just look at because
- 1:15:06they will kill you. That'll be the mushroom you eat
- 1:15:08one time and then are your friends.
- 1:15:12So you know, so are you suggesting?
- 1:15:15That Manford is poisonous. He.
- 1:15:19Could be. I think it's.
- 1:15:20More so that he's sentient. That's an issue towards I I
- 1:15:27don't think the gush, the gush rooms and the shush rooms are
- 1:15:29sentient necessarily, but Manford definitely we're not
- 1:15:33we're not no. So I think Manford.
- 1:15:37Might have some toxic traits, codependency.
- 1:15:42Yeah, codependency. Don't.
- 1:15:44Eat codependent mushrooms, no. Good advice.
- 1:15:48Fraggle Rock saving the world back of the trash heap.
- 1:15:55Marjorie is convincing Ma to own her queenness.
- 1:15:58Ma finds a crown in the trash and puts it on.
- 1:16:02First of all, I don't recommend putting garbage on your head,
- 1:16:05but whatever. I'm not a gorg.
- 1:16:07Second of all, I guess because it it's in her trash that means
- 1:16:12it used to be hers or something like that.
- 1:16:17It's made of. It was made.
- 1:16:18Of like spoons and spoons and forks and things that you would
- 1:16:22find in the garbage almost look like something that that maybe
- 1:16:27Junior had created and played with is what I believe, you
- 1:16:33know, because it was all intact. It wasn't like, you know, she,
- 1:16:36she built it in the moment. I was like, oh, I would have
- 1:16:40guessed. Like.
- 1:16:40Maybe Philo and Gunge made it for Marjorie, but that would
- 1:16:43have been way too big for Marjorie.
- 1:16:44That would have been like a belt for her.
- 1:16:45Oh yeah, yeah, for sure. Or a corset.
- 1:16:48Right with Marjorie and the boys before there was the spaghetti
- 1:16:54sweaters. So.
- 1:16:55Oh, that's true, yeah. So it it could just be.
- 1:16:58A a craft experience and sometimes when you're trying a
- 1:17:01new form, you don't always get the size right.
- 1:17:05That's oh. That's a really great
- 1:17:06observation. I'll also I'll throw out one
- 1:17:08more and it's because Marjorie is all knowing She she knew this
- 1:17:12was going to happen. She may have had a crown ready
- 1:17:16for when Ma shows up. Yeah, she put the.
- 1:17:18She put the the rats to tack and yeah, created this beautiful.
- 1:17:24It was actually really pretty. I thought.
- 1:17:25I really liked that crown. It was nice.
- 1:17:30You need you need a human sized replica.
- 1:17:31To take home. Oh my God, wouldn't that be
- 1:17:33cool? Yeah.
- 1:17:34Well, you got forks. Yeah, you can put something
- 1:17:36together. That project.
- 1:17:40Just to wear it around town, yeah.
- 1:17:42You could be that Lady wearing a fork crown.
- 1:17:45Yeah, no one's gonna. Mess with you?
- 1:17:47No. One's gonna mess with you here
- 1:17:48in San Francisco. Exactly.
- 1:17:51Everything goes so. This is where we get that song
- 1:17:57Be a Queen. We were just discussing and
- 1:18:00during the song, Ma kind of has this fantasy moment where the
- 1:18:05Gorg's castle is like all decked out and Junior and Pennsylvania
- 1:18:08are like welcoming, welcoming her home.
- 1:18:10And they're they're throwing flowers for her And Philo and
- 1:18:14Gunj are there and they're wearing these like little royal
- 1:18:16outfits. I don't know how to describe
- 1:18:17them. They're adorable.
- 1:18:21And Ma has a scepter, which I think if, if I saw it right,
- 1:18:25it's got like a gilded radish on top.
- 1:18:29Back underground. The Fraggles are so grateful
- 1:18:33they met the lost Fraggles after that dust storm leader says that
- 1:18:37the lost Fraggles ancestors fled from a dust storm as well, which
- 1:18:40is how they ended up underground.
- 1:18:43And when they fled undergrounds, they also lost their favorite
- 1:18:47food, which I know when when I talk about a disaster that leads
- 1:18:49to like people who have had to like leave their homes, the
- 1:18:52first thing you think is how about that food that we used to
- 1:18:55have that was so good. That's, that's really like the
- 1:18:58top, the top like two things. We lost our old home.
- 1:19:01And there was this one thing that.
- 1:19:04We used to eat all the. Time is good, no I.
- 1:19:07Come from a family that. Goes on vacation, like we'd go
- 1:19:10on vacation when I was little and come back and go, yeah, it
- 1:19:15was nice. We had this really tasty dessert
- 1:19:18at this place. So I, I do, I can resonate with
- 1:19:22the concept of the food as central.
- 1:19:26No, that's true. That is true and.
- 1:19:27Also, food is very important to the Fraggles.
- 1:19:29And I will admit, like, you know, there are certain places
- 1:19:32in this world where like, if you're like, oh, I went to
- 1:19:34Paris. It's like, yeah, blah, blah,
- 1:19:36blah. I saw the Louvre.
- 1:19:37But have you ever had a baguette?
- 1:19:39Whoa, got. Lasagna in Italy.
- 1:19:46It's. A different experience, man.
- 1:19:48So it's true. It's true.
- 1:19:49Left Italy have vanilla lasagna anymore.
- 1:19:52It's just. Not happening.
- 1:19:54That's true. And it.
- 1:19:55Makes me think that the the the radishes that are grown in the
- 1:19:59Gorg's garden. I bet they taste way better than
- 1:20:01our radishes. I bet they taste real good.
- 1:20:03Oh, for sure. Yeah, right.
- 1:20:06Yep. Not spicy, not.
- 1:20:08Woody like little spicy, but not Yeah, you think there's do you
- 1:20:13think there's? Like a little bit of spice in
- 1:20:14them, like, you know that like. That little like like that
- 1:20:19tingle that a radish like, you know, when you.
- 1:20:21Oh, what you were saying? Yeah, I thought.
- 1:20:23I thought you were. Saying like.
- 1:20:24They're they? They come with like, I don't
- 1:20:26know, they they grill them with paprika already baked into them
- 1:20:29or something. Yeah, no, that makes more sense.
- 1:20:31Yes, the the radish spice Abiish.
- 1:20:35Yeah. But anyway, they obviously.
- 1:20:39Loved. Radishes so much that they made
- 1:20:42a statue to commemorate the radish.
- 1:20:45And as they unveil this this little statue, Wembley throws
- 1:20:47himself in front of it, but right behind him is a giant
- 1:20:51radish statue. Because as leader says, the
- 1:20:53little 1 was just the model that they used to make the big one.
- 1:20:57And so now Gobo knows that Uncle Matt's story about discovering
- 1:21:02radishes, it was all bull. As if we could have trusted
- 1:21:05travelling Matt anyway. But maybe Gobo doesn't know
- 1:21:08that. And he's not mad.
- 1:21:11He's just disappointed. You know, he just wanted to know
- 1:21:13the whole story and the lost fraggles like kind of this is
- 1:21:18also one of my favorite things in the in this episode because
- 1:21:20this prop is so cool. The lost Fraggles tell the story
- 1:21:24of how the, you know, Gorgs use this chemical and destroy the
- 1:21:27radishes, create the dust storm. They all to flee underground and
- 1:21:30they're doing it like with this hand cranked, hand drawn
- 1:21:34tableau. It's like on on like a big piece
- 1:21:36of fabric. I don't really know how to
- 1:21:37describe it, but hopefully you've seen the episode.
- 1:21:39You know what it looks like and what a great prop that is like
- 1:21:43that's it's a really cool looking thing.
- 1:21:46I love the art. Style too this like lost fraggle
- 1:21:49art with these kind of little stick figure fraggles.
- 1:21:52It's very good. Dan's puppet arm popped off at
- 1:21:55one point when we were it was cranking the the.
- 1:21:58Thing. That's the one cranking going.
- 1:22:01And I'm doing the speech as leader and all of a sudden I
- 1:22:03hear Dan go and I just. Thought he was.
- 1:22:06Just. You know.
- 1:22:08Enjoying his character to the fullest and thought it would be
- 1:22:11cool to scream in the middle of my monologue.
- 1:22:13So I was kind of like, oddly. Offended for a second.
- 1:22:16And then like, yeah, what a character choice you made there.
- 1:22:19Dan. It's like no my.
- 1:22:24It's not. Well, it's not.
- 1:22:25Anyway. Maybe lost.
- 1:22:27Fraggles. They have detachable limbs.
- 1:22:29Maybe that's just one of the many ways that make them
- 1:22:32different from regular fraggles and they grow them back.
- 1:22:36Instantly like a lizard. Yes, Right.
- 1:22:38Yes. So they tell the story, and
- 1:22:43apparently before they fled underground, they planted some
- 1:22:46radish seeds with some compost as an act of hope.
- 1:22:50So. As we've.
- 1:22:52Learned here like something happens in between when they
- 1:22:55planted those seeds and when the gorg started harvesting them.
- 1:22:58But they are the they're responsible for there still
- 1:23:01being radishes up above ground and traveling that may not have
- 1:23:05discovered the radishes first, but he did discover these new
- 1:23:09radishes that came from those seeds, or at least as far as the
- 1:23:12fraggles are are concerned. I guess the Gorgs technically
- 1:23:16would have discovered them beforehands.
- 1:23:17But the word word nitpicking, the word discover is, is a
- 1:23:22little, we're a little loose with the definition there.
- 1:23:27Yeah, I, I like. To tell people this for that is
- 1:23:31the episode about capitalism and this is the episode about
- 1:23:35colonialism. It's it's broad strokes.
- 1:23:39But it's like, yeah, if Uncle Matt had asked Junior, hey, what
- 1:23:43are these, it would have been a different conversation.
- 1:23:46But of course, that's not what Uncle Matt would do.
- 1:23:48So it all, it all filters in there and you know, I think
- 1:23:53actually. You're making a good point here
- 1:23:54because that's what he does in all of his postcards.
- 1:23:57And he doesn't ask what things are.
- 1:24:00He just makes assumptions. And then he writes back and he's
- 1:24:02like, look, I made this discovery of this thing that
- 1:24:04already exists. And I'm going to tell you
- 1:24:06incorrect information about what that is.
- 1:24:09And, you know, it's, it reminds me of, as you said, it's, it's
- 1:24:13colonialism. It's it's, you know, Christopher
- 1:24:16Columbus, you know, showing up on our shores and saying, well,
- 1:24:20this must be India. And no one's correcting him
- 1:24:24because he's the captain. And now you know, you know, you
- 1:24:29know the history. It's exhausting.
- 1:24:31The rest is literally. History.
- 1:24:34Yeah, yeah. Exactly.
- 1:24:37But we don't need to get into all of that.
- 1:24:39That's not another podcast. We don't have the time to really
- 1:24:43break that that thing open. But but the important thing here
- 1:24:47is that the Fraggles now know that compost can help to heal
- 1:24:50the scorched land up above. That's a pretty important thing
- 1:24:54that they've learned here from the the lost Fraggles.
- 1:24:56And this is where we get a our third song of the episode, which
- 1:25:00is exciting that we got 3 songs in this episode.
- 1:25:03It is is it true, which comes from the original series episode
- 1:25:07The Wizard of Fraggle Rock. And what a gift we get to hear
- 1:25:10Catherine O'Hara sing. I love that.
- 1:25:12I love that for us. Now, Kira, you were.
- 1:25:17You were saying earlier that you had the scratch track, that you
- 1:25:22could record the lines, and then Catherine O'Hara came in and did
- 1:25:25some ADR for the character afterward.
- 1:25:28At what point is the song recorded?
- 1:25:30So did you have her voice in your ear for the song?
- 1:25:33Yeah, including the the. Yelling.
- 1:25:36Is it true? Yeah, No that.
- 1:25:41Fortunately, that was just a lip sync situation, so yeah.
- 1:25:46That's awesome though, because you got to have.
- 1:25:47Catherine O'Hara in your ear. And like, what a gift that is
- 1:25:51for any of us. Yeah.
- 1:25:53Truly, truly and. I mean, there's nothing
- 1:25:59incredibly special about what we're seeing on screen for the
- 1:26:01song. But like I did, there's some fun
- 1:26:03choreography. There's like an interesting
- 1:26:05light shining down from The Cave ceiling, the kind of like
- 1:26:08emulating spotlights on everybody.
- 1:26:11And I appreciate that because like it's a good reminder that
- 1:26:15we are further undergrounds than we're used to.
- 1:26:18The light is coming from above. It's not just kind of a general
- 1:26:22light situation that we're, you know, I guess from the ditzies.
- 1:26:26We're not we haven't really gotten into ditzies and back to
- 1:26:28the rock. But yeah, like it's because, you
- 1:26:32know, the below lost and found caves, they they look really
- 1:26:38similar to regular Fraggle rock case.
- 1:26:40So that's one way that I guess you guys can kind of
- 1:26:42differentiate was with the lighting.
- 1:26:45Actually, that's a good question too.
- 1:26:47Was there anything that makes this difference, just visually
- 1:26:50speaking, besides the statues, the artwork that we saw and this
- 1:26:56light situation, like is there anything else about it that
- 1:26:58makes it different from the regular Fraggle Rock that we
- 1:27:01see? I think the light like you.
- 1:27:03Said is a big thing. I feel like the light is a lot
- 1:27:05more like you see it kind of more pointed in certain places.
- 1:27:09I don't know if. This is true if I'm.
- 1:27:10Just imagining it, everything feels more kind of like light
- 1:27:15brown and dusty, except. For.
- 1:27:18The mushroom garden, which is, you know, necessarily darker,
- 1:27:26more moist. It's like all the moisture from
- 1:27:29everywhere else went into growing these mushrooms.
- 1:27:31So that's, but I think about lost fragile rock It, it has
- 1:27:35more of that like kind of what you would imagine, I guess if
- 1:27:39you were looking at, you know, ancient Egyptian ruins or
- 1:27:43something. It's all tan also sort of sandy
- 1:27:46desert colors. And yeah.
- 1:27:49Yeah, yeah, that makes sense. Yeah.
- 1:27:52And I feel like that would be the easiest way to kind of just
- 1:27:54tell the difference is just change the color palette a
- 1:27:56little bit and there you go. And then one other thing about
- 1:28:00the these lost Fraggles, we've when, when the regular Fraggles,
- 1:28:06God, I don't know what to call them our Fraggles.
- 1:28:09Like when they've, when they've found other Fraggle communities,
- 1:28:13you know, it's like we've seen, you know, the murgles and the
- 1:28:16crackles and then, you know, we've met Price who comes from
- 1:28:22another community, that sort of thing.
- 1:28:24But this feels like it's the first one that's really like an
- 1:28:27actual offshoot of the regular Fraggle Rock.
- 1:28:30So are we assuming that there's even more of these like that,
- 1:28:33that like that there's all these other fragile communities that
- 1:28:37are just. If you just dig in the right
- 1:28:39place, if you just go through the right cave, then there could
- 1:28:43be any sorts of fragile communities that are just
- 1:28:46slightly different from the one that we're used to.
- 1:28:49Yeah. They're all like little Hamlets,
- 1:28:50right? Yeah, with just.
- 1:28:53Other types of. You know, yeah, exactly little.
- 1:28:57Communities that, that have their own rules and hierarchy
- 1:29:01and who knows? I mean, that's yeah, I, I the
- 1:29:07world is less. Globally connected than like
- 1:29:13silly. Creature World.
- 1:29:14Is I think right where? We've all.
- 1:29:18Found each other mostly at this point, although I do still
- 1:29:21wonder whether there are still groups out there, you know,
- 1:29:24that's like, that have no human contact or no, like contact with
- 1:29:27the outside world, I should say, because they're still humans,
- 1:29:30but not, I don't know the proper term.
- 1:29:35Yeah, there. Are I'd like to ask.
- 1:29:39But they're still. Undiscovered is a thing.
- 1:29:41I wonder sometimes is like, are there still groups out there
- 1:29:44that just. Haven't been found.
- 1:29:46Because they're living in a particularly isolated or hidden
- 1:29:51way. And is that even possible in
- 1:29:54this day and age? So why?
- 1:29:57Not have that be. Possible in the fragile world
- 1:30:00there's a underground covers a lot of space so that's true and
- 1:30:05also like. Fraggle Rock is magic.
- 1:30:07So, you know, there's, I mean, it's an infinite amount of space
- 1:30:10as far as we're concerned, it's, it's not.
- 1:30:14Just. What's directly below Fraggle
- 1:30:16Rock? You know, it's it's also a
- 1:30:19portal that leads to wherever or there's something that used to
- 1:30:23be here and now it's something else.
- 1:30:25And you know, it could be anything.
- 1:30:27But I love this idea. And, you know, I think it the
- 1:30:31old Fraggle Rock leaned so much on the inner connectivity
- 1:30:34between Fraggles, slick creatures, Gorgs, Doozers,
- 1:30:38period. And although there we did see
- 1:30:41other fragile types that that that was the main theme there.
- 1:30:44And I feel like back to the rock is really starting to plant
- 1:30:46those seeds of there's all kinds of Fraggles.
- 1:30:50And you know, like you said, it's not a global, you know,
- 1:30:53it's not like we have we have a government that's above all of
- 1:30:56them that's overseeing all these from Fraggles and it's tracking
- 1:30:59them. Yeah, there's no Fraggle UN
- 1:31:01right, But I don't know, like I would love to learn more about
- 1:31:06that and so meet more of these fragile communities and, you
- 1:31:09know, see how they differ and how they complement each other.
- 1:31:12I think that's fun. Yeah.
- 1:31:14And also within each. Community that there are also
- 1:31:16probably different creatures right, like all the little like
- 1:31:19the talking flowers, all the underwater creatures all the
- 1:31:22like you know plants that have you know sentient plant being
- 1:31:26yeah manfered yeah, they probably all have what I've
- 1:31:31always wondered it is the Fraggle society with a Fraggle
- 1:31:365. Is that the only one with
- 1:31:37outside communication to silly creatures?
- 1:31:40Or do all the other ones also have their own version of
- 1:31:44travelling mat where they get info or info or like do they
- 1:31:49have? Access to a Fraggle hole that
- 1:31:51has their own dock or someone who's on the other side?
- 1:31:54Yeah. But what or?
- 1:31:57Or somebody that's not like a dock at all, you know what I
- 1:32:00mean? Where it's just like literally a
- 1:32:01hole into a garbage pit or, you know, or somebody's, I don't
- 1:32:07know, like an insane asylum. I don't know.
- 1:32:09We're going there. We're going ah yes, Season 3.
- 1:32:12Fraggle's an insane asylum. What we do know?
- 1:32:17Actually, I mean, if if we're following the rules of the
- 1:32:19original Fraggle Rock, there was a of course I'm not, I can't
- 1:32:22remember all the details of the top of my head.
- 1:32:24But like there's an episode where they find another cave
- 1:32:27that has portals that can go, you know, to a dozen different
- 1:32:29places all around the world. And, you know, kind of cementing
- 1:32:33this idea that Fraggle Rock is not in a specific place in our
- 1:32:37world. It the magic kind of makes it
- 1:32:40exists in many different places. So yeah.
- 1:32:43So that's actually pretty likely that they could have a Fraggle
- 1:32:46hole that could lead to anywhere.
- 1:32:49I don't know. OK.
- 1:32:51Well, we're going to have some conversations with the writers
- 1:32:53about what? What's next?
- 1:32:57All right, well, we'll. Let our imaginations run.
- 1:32:59Well, with that one. And so now that the Fraggles
- 1:33:02have an inkling of a strategy with all this stuff with the the
- 1:33:06compost and and oh, there's also this whole thing with Cotter pin
- 1:33:10where she says, you know, oh, we could also use technology.
- 1:33:13And she goes into a bunch of techno Babble, but I don't
- 1:33:15understand. And so after she says that, the
- 1:33:18lost freckles go, oh, you are a Doozer.
- 1:33:21So all right, You didn't have to listen to her when she said it,
- 1:33:24but now that she's proven it, she's gone, you know, like, bent
- 1:33:28over backwards to explain to you about science.
- 1:33:32Now you believe her. OK.
- 1:33:35Yeah. Trust Doozers, is what I'm
- 1:33:37saying. Listen to Doozers.
- 1:33:42So. The.
- 1:33:43Lost freckles. They don't really seem
- 1:33:47interested in exploring the world above now that they even
- 1:33:50now they know that it's safe. They just seem like they're
- 1:33:53going to be fine hanging out underground, which is a choice.
- 1:33:57Now, I'm not saying it's, it's right or wrong, but it's a
- 1:33:59choice. And Moki has to drag Lanford
- 1:34:03away from Manford because they love each other.
- 1:34:07And she says it's probably good that she doesn't have a twin
- 1:34:09because now she doesn't have to, you know, be sad saying goodbye
- 1:34:12to them. And just as they leave her
- 1:34:15doppelganger, slow pokey shows up fashionably late.
- 1:34:19And Amy, that's you, right? You're playing slow pokey.
- 1:34:22Yeah. I genuinely thought until today
- 1:34:26when I saw it listed on the Muppet wiki that it was Donna
- 1:34:29because the voice match is so good.
- 1:34:31I really thought, Oh my God, thank you.
- 1:34:33That was another one that I was just like, no, it does not
- 1:34:36sound, could never sound like Donna, but thank you.
- 1:34:44Yeah, her moki is just. Perfection.
- 1:34:47Yes, Yes. And, and the fact that she's
- 1:34:50slow, pokey and being late because of like, you know, she
- 1:34:54was meditating makes sense because you can't make her two
- 1:34:57different. It's like, oh, it's just like
- 1:34:59Moki, except she's always late. It's like, no, no.
- 1:35:01She's also space AG and meditatee.
- 1:35:04And, you know, she has reasons for being late.
- 1:35:07Yeah. And then finally back at the
- 1:35:11Gorg's garden, Junior and Pennsylvania are wailing about
- 1:35:15not having the garden and not having Ma rounds.
- 1:35:17And Pennsylvania is all out of kingly ideas.
- 1:35:20And then from off screen, Ma says, then I'll lead you.
- 1:35:26And she walks in, puts down a pizza box, phyllo and guns pop
- 1:35:31out of it. And there's still a slice of
- 1:35:33pizza on there, which I appreciate.
- 1:35:36And they give her a queenly introduction.
- 1:35:38She's taking over, taking over the whole thing.
- 1:35:41I love this. I love everything about this.
- 1:35:43I love the way that Ma has grown and she's taking control.
- 1:35:47She's really going to cut PA down a peg, which he desperately
- 1:35:51needs. And you know, they got a problem
- 1:35:54they got to solve. And like, he wasn't, he wasn't
- 1:35:56up to the task. So this is great.
- 1:36:00I love everything about this that that's where episode ends.
- 1:36:04This episode was a blast. Do do either of you have any
- 1:36:08final thoughts about this or anything that we didn't cover
- 1:36:11that you wanted to talk about or, or if something comes to you
- 1:36:13about another episode that feels like it's important to say, feel
- 1:36:18free to chime in. No, I just love these deep.
- 1:36:21Dives, these are, I mean, Kira, I, I I, I don't know about you,
- 1:36:27but like just reliving, reliving.
- 1:36:30These episodes. Is, oh gosh, it doesn't feel so
- 1:36:34good. And it's so, and it's so nice to
- 1:36:36see the, the final product too, because like while you're on the
- 1:36:39floor sometimes you're like, oh man, I hope this this works.
- 1:36:42You know, the way that it's been envisioned.
- 1:36:46And then when you finally see it, it's yeah, I'm just, I'm so
- 1:36:50proud of everybody. Like it's just, it's, it's been
- 1:36:53a really very fulfilling. Ride.
- 1:36:58Yeah, it was. It was a long journey from
- 1:37:01wrapping, you know, season 2 to the actual release of season 2
- 1:37:07because of the because of the strikes, which of course love a
- 1:37:10union go team. But yeah, seeing how everything
- 1:37:17came together and getting this opportunity to chat with someone
- 1:37:21who someone's who really know their stuff and are just as
- 1:37:24enthusiastic about the cool puppet bits and deep metaphors
- 1:37:30and deep thinking, just getting to talk all that has been nice.
- 1:37:34I remembered I I just remembered that while we were.
- 1:37:38Shooting this episode. Was when I got shingles.
- 1:37:42Oh no. I so.
- 1:37:47I, I, I'm going to choose to say that I was so determined and so
- 1:37:54really wanting to do right by Canadian icon Catherine O'Hara
- 1:37:58that I gave myself shingles. So, Catherine, I got shingles
- 1:38:04for you. Yeah, say.
- 1:38:11That and and also if you ever. See me because I didn't
- 1:38:13actually, you know, we don't get to meet the voice stars
- 1:38:16necessarily. But Catherine, if you ever find
- 1:38:19yourself in Toronto and want to say hi, just look me up.
- 1:38:21We can hang out. Yeah, She's a, she's a
- 1:38:24dedicated. Listener to this podcast,
- 1:38:26Catherine O'Hara, so I'm sure sure she'll get your message.
- 1:38:30Closeted Fraggle. Fanatic Catherine O'Hara, you
- 1:38:34never know. Do you never.
- 1:38:35Know. Look, Catherine O'Hara, you're
- 1:38:37great. Thanks for listening.
- 1:38:39Thanks for Thanks for. Being a part of the game, yeah.
- 1:38:42I'm the biggest. I'm I'm such a huge puppet fan.
- 1:38:45You have no idea. I love The Muppets of Fraggles.
- 1:38:48Oh my gosh. Like they're like they're
- 1:38:49ashamed of themselves. So it's it's possible.
- 1:38:53I'll hold out hope. You never know.
- 1:38:55I mean, look. I will say it like you guys had
- 1:38:57Brett Goldstein on the show, who I think he only got this role
- 1:39:01because he would not shut up in interviews, but how much he
- 1:39:04loves The Muppets. And like within the year he was,
- 1:39:08he made it on to Fraggle Rock, he made it on to Sesame Street,
- 1:39:10He did some live stuff with The Muppets.
- 1:39:13It's like everyone heard him. So like, I think the moral here
- 1:39:16is if you're listening to this podcast and if you're a huge
- 1:39:19Muppet fan, but you're also a celebrity, just just start
- 1:39:23talking about it. Just start saying out loud, you
- 1:39:26know who's another one? We did an interview with Yvette
- 1:39:29Nicole Brown from community and, and who is fantastic and she's a
- 1:39:35huge Muppet fan. And, you know, we made sure that
- 1:39:39she got in contact with the people who she need to get in
- 1:39:41contact with. And like she'd already done
- 1:39:44Muppets Haunted Mansion, but like, she's going to be on
- 1:39:47Sesame Street or if, if not already and like, just, you
- 1:39:51know, just start saying it out loud.
- 1:39:53And, you know, I, I, I think all three Muppets, Fraggles and
- 1:39:57Sesame, like they want to work with celebrities.
- 1:40:00Oh, I like that just. Got to just got to make sure the
- 1:40:02right. Person hears you.
- 1:40:05Amy, you're the queen of. Manifestation When I think of
- 1:40:09manifesting things and making them happen and have knowing 800
- 1:40:13ways to do that, I always think of you.
- 1:40:16So yes, send what? What would be your #1 tip to a
- 1:40:20celebrity looking to manifest their like?
- 1:40:24You know. Utilize the socials but also
- 1:40:27manifest it into your water before you drink it.
- 1:40:29I want to work with Muppets. And then drink your water.
- 1:40:33That's the manifestation right there.
- 1:40:34And maybe not a candle. Do you just talk to your water?
- 1:40:37Is that it? Yeah, you have to.
- 1:40:39That's the whole thing. What's the secret?
- 1:40:42No, it is. It is a thing.
- 1:40:43Apparently it is a thing if you like, as you know, water holds
- 1:40:46energy and if you like, like, like speak.
- 1:40:48Positive and do it try. It try it try it.
- 1:40:51Full moon thing too. You do like Oh my goodness.
- 1:40:54OK, I'm. Gonna I'm gonna try.
- 1:40:56I gotta think of something good to manifest in the full moon in
- 1:40:59some my water. Drink your water just like.
- 1:41:01I was like Singer I. Would like to.
- 1:41:03Own a mansion one day and then like or whatever, you know, I
- 1:41:07would like to meet Bret Goldstein.
- 1:41:10I would like. To meet is would it work?
- 1:41:13In chocolate milk. Yeah, it.
- 1:41:17Has to be water. I don't think chocolate milk
- 1:41:18holds the same amount. OK, but that doesn't mean I'm.
- 1:41:23Going to stop talking to my chocolate milk.
- 1:41:25OK, you can talk to your chocolate milk.
- 1:41:26Yeah, I appreciate that. Yeah.
- 1:41:27Thank you. So here, Amy, I have a question
- 1:41:34that we like to ask everybody at the end of our podcast.
- 1:41:37For each of you, how do you plan to make the world a little
- 1:41:41fragglier? I'm.
- 1:41:43Traveling a lot right now, so. I do feel like traveling, Matt,
- 1:41:47in a lot of ways and a lot of my career outside of puppetry has
- 1:41:54been about me traveling different places.
- 1:41:56So I've seen specifically the United States change a lot
- 1:42:02throughout the years and and watched a lot of communities
- 1:42:08struggle. And one thing that I'm really,
- 1:42:12really aware of right now is the unhoused, you know, the people
- 1:42:20who are just who don't have homes.
- 1:42:22And it's pretty much. In every major.
- 1:42:25City here in the States and if I am trying to be more mindful of
- 1:42:40being as human as possible and and help any way that I can when
- 1:42:44I get to these cities, whether that's literally just bringing
- 1:42:50an extra sandwich or like not throwing my clothing it it you
- 1:42:56know away, but folding it up or like or even having a
- 1:43:00conversation and finding out what people need that's.
- 1:43:08I mean, I'm just one person and I.
- 1:43:10Know that there are are are systems built in order to to
- 1:43:13help a lot of people in a lot of these communities.
- 1:43:15But yeah, I, I feel like that's the biggest pain point in the US
- 1:43:23currently. I mean, there are more
- 1:43:24obviously, but this is the one that, that I, that I have, I
- 1:43:29have noticed quite a bit lately. So I, I personally need to get a
- 1:43:36lot more involved than I already am.
- 1:43:39That's how I would like to make the world more fragilely so.
- 1:43:42And it's, I think it also falls into the whole storyline too,
- 1:43:48about reusing and recycling and being aware of our environment
- 1:43:53and our communities and, and how and the butterfly.
- 1:43:57Effect of like. You know this, this act of
- 1:44:01kindness can also perpetuate another act of kindness.
- 1:44:05And it just it it, it will heal. I think a lot of.
- 1:44:12Issues just to help people get back on their feet.
- 1:44:16Yeah, that. Maybe that.
- 1:44:18Yeah, absolutely. No, it's.
- 1:44:20Important work and and like you said, you may you may feel like
- 1:44:23you're one person, but that's what it takes.
- 1:44:25You know, that's like it takes a lot of one, just one persons to
- 1:44:29make a difference and that's how it.
- 1:44:30Starts. You have to be that person,
- 1:44:33yeah. And it's.
- 1:44:35Your your. Building community that's.
- 1:44:38The. Folks who you know you might see
- 1:44:41asking for change near the grocery store.
- 1:44:44If you're you're seeing the same people all the time, that's
- 1:44:48they're your neighbor. They're true community.
- 1:44:51So they deserve. You know, to be treated with
- 1:44:55kindness and respect, same as everyone.
- 1:44:56So I love that you I. Love that you highlighted that.
- 1:45:02Here, how about you? How do you plan to?
- 1:45:03Make the world a little fragglier well.
- 1:45:08A thing I've been. Thinking about a lot recently is
- 1:45:15the. Relationship that.
- 1:45:16We have with the planet and with our natural environment.
- 1:45:21I really like gardening. I really like, you know, going
- 1:45:24out and learning more about the native plants in my area.
- 1:45:27I was just back home in my hometown of Yellowknife up north
- 1:45:31and revisiting the differences between like the, the native
- 1:45:35flora there and down here in Toronto where I currently live.
- 1:45:42And I read an incredible book called Braiding Sweetgrass by
- 1:45:49Robin Wall Camerer, who is a botanist and also a a member of
- 1:45:56the, I believe it's the Potawatomi Nation Indigenous
- 1:46:02group in the states. And it's about the intersection
- 1:46:06of botany with Indigenous wisdom and ways of knowing and the
- 1:46:12concept of the relationship with the land and I.
- 1:46:17Sort of got into this. Stuff I had the idea of like
- 1:46:19foraging, which feels very fragile, like, oh, what's here?
- 1:46:22We're going to, you know, figure out a way to take just what we
- 1:46:25need from nature. And then I attended a talk about
- 1:46:29foraging and someone pointed out that that's still a very like
- 1:46:32take mindset. And there's like, what?
- 1:46:35Grate you forage? You take from the land now?
- 1:46:37What are you giving back? And I was like, oh, yeah.
- 1:46:39And then I read Braiding Sweetgrass, and that's, I think
- 1:46:44a lot of how we think about the natural world as humans in our
- 1:46:49current society is very disconnected.
- 1:46:51It's like, here's us and we're in our city and we're in our
- 1:46:53house or whatever. And then here's nature over
- 1:46:56there. And sometimes we do stuff.
- 1:46:57And often the attitude is maybe all the humans should just
- 1:47:02disappear and then nature would be better off without us.
- 1:47:05But what Kimur presented in her book is more of a reciprocal
- 1:47:10relationship, right? You're living.
- 1:47:12Humans are part of the ecosystem.
- 1:47:16We are part. Of the landscape we've had a
- 1:47:17massive effect on it right and we're living in the oh gosh,
- 1:47:22what's the word the Anthropocene where it's it's basically a
- 1:47:27period of time where human development and building and the
- 1:47:31effect on the environment is creating massive changes in the
- 1:47:37global ecosystem and. Recognizing.
- 1:47:42That we're not a thing that has been plopped down into nature,
- 1:47:46but a thing that exists within nature.
- 1:47:48And how do we create more? Stewardship.
- 1:47:54Of the land around us what are we doing to give back to the
- 1:47:57planet what gifts does the planet give us what gifts can we
- 1:48:00give the planet back and I think just.
- 1:48:04Because the. The ecological messages in
- 1:48:06Fraggle Rock are so strong and the connections to the rocks and
- 1:48:12the water and the plants are all so rich in that world.
- 1:48:17That's that's my very woo sort of thing that I've been
- 1:48:23thinking. About and feeling.
- 1:48:24A lot lately, as I, you know, go out in the world and know what
- 1:48:28plants are coming up through the sidewalk and which ones are
- 1:48:31meant to be here and which ones have come from other places and
- 1:48:34are creating problems. Which ones are going to you know
- 1:48:38if you have a little cut will slow the bleeding faster just.
- 1:48:44Or even just learning the trees. In your front yard, I somebody
- 1:48:47said. I didn't get interested in this
- 1:48:49until I looked out my window and thought I don't know what any of
- 1:48:52the trees in my front yard are so even.
- 1:48:55Just that little bit of. Knowledge gets you so much more
- 1:48:57connected with the the ecosystem that you live in and starts to
- 1:49:03build a relationship between you and the planet rather than this
- 1:49:07siloed existence that we have. So I just ranted and rambled on
- 1:49:11that for a real long time. I'm so I loved it.
- 1:49:15I, I loved it here and and also it's like as, as you were
- 1:49:18speaking on it, it's sort of like, wow, all that information
- 1:49:22has has felt so gate kept to me because like my, my only
- 1:49:28interaction with with like produce, right, or, or, or
- 1:49:33things that grow or things that I can find in a supermarket.
- 1:49:36I don't know how to like. I mean, I'm sure I can figure
- 1:49:38out how to plant a tomato by looking it up online, but the
- 1:49:40fact that we don't eat each. Sort of.
- 1:49:44Know and respect like the time it takes for that seed to turn
- 1:49:49into a plant to then like turn into fruit that you can eat and
- 1:49:53then you know get recycled and continue that process.
- 1:49:57We don't we then tend to not care for the planet in general
- 1:50:03because we take zero responsibility in it.
- 1:50:06So Oh my God, I agreed with you 100%.
- 1:50:10And yeah, I I would love to to learn more about that as well
- 1:50:17and literally dig my hands in the dirt and and figure it all
- 1:50:20out. Nearly put your hands in some.
- 1:50:23Dirt in dirt. Touch a.
- 1:50:26Plant not the ones that are going to irritate your skin, but
- 1:50:29touch a plant. Learn which ones are irritating
- 1:50:30your skin. And yeah.
- 1:50:33Do. Do read.
- 1:50:33That. Book anyone who's interested.
- 1:50:35Robin Wall camera braiding Sweetgrass.
- 1:50:37I listen to the audio book which is like it's like a 14 hour
- 1:50:41audio book, but it's read by the author and she has just the
- 1:50:45nicest voice and I listen to it while I was gardening and it was
- 1:50:48just the most like soul healing thing.
- 1:50:52So I love it. And I think it's also really
- 1:50:56important. To know which plants are
- 1:50:57sentient and might you know, be your be a be a Manford or a
- 1:51:02Lanford exactly critical. Part of the knowledge.
- 1:51:06Easily maybe? Maybe the most important.
- 1:51:12Keira Hall. Amy Garcia, thank you both so
