Latest / Sri Aurobindo Studies / Two Key Forms of Aspiration in the Spiritual Seeking
Transcript
- 0:00The Yoga of Knowledge focuses on the realization of the self, the
- 0:05consciousness above which is free from the illusions of the
- 0:09external life that most people lead.
- 0:12The Yoga of Devotion focuses on the realization of the psychic
- 0:17being, which turns the being and the sense towards the divine.
- 0:23The practice of yoga is not a matter of intellectual
- 0:26understanding or sentimental adherence to a particular form
- 0:30or doctrine. Yoga is an experiential science.
- 0:35Those seekers who are guided more towards the aspiration for
- 0:38liberation from the strictures of mind, life and body tend to
- 0:43focus their attention above and relate themselves to the vast
- 0:47infinite consciousness. Those seekers were guided more
- 0:52toward the aspiration for transformation of human life
- 0:55into something deeper and truer, find their natural seat of focus
- 1:00and aspiration in the space behind the heart.
- 1:05Each of these forms of aspiration provide a starting
- 1:08point for the spiritual seekers development and eventually for
- 1:14those who are called towards transformation rather than
- 1:16denial of life. They both wind up coming into
- 1:20play. Sriora Bindu observes quote.
- 1:26The Bindu seen above may be a symbolic way of seeing the
- 1:29Jeevatman, the portion of the divine.
- 1:33The aspiration there would naturally be for the opening of
- 1:36the higher consciousness so that the being may dwell there and
- 1:41not in the ignorance. The Jeevatman is already one
- 1:45with the Divine in reality, but what is needed is that the rest
- 1:49of the consciousness should realize it.
- 1:53The aspiration of the psychic being is for the opening of the
- 1:56whole lower nature, mind, vital body to the Divine, for the love
- 2:01and union with the Divine, for its presence and power within
- 2:05the heart, for the transformation of the mind, life
- 2:08and body by the descent of the higher consciousness into this
- 2:13instrumental being and nature. Both aspirations are essential
- 2:18and indispensable for the fullness of this Yoga.
- 2:22When the psychic imposes its aspiration on the mind, vital
- 2:26and body, then they too aspire, and this is what was felt as the
- 2:31aspiration from the level of the lower being.
- 2:34The aspiration felt above is that of the Jeev Atman for the
- 2:39higher consciousness with its realization of the One to
- 2:42manifest in the being. Therefore both aspirations help
- 2:47each other. The seeking of the lower being
- 2:50is necessarily at first intermittent and oppressed by
- 2:53the ordinary consciousness. It has by Sadhna to become
- 2:58clear, constant, strong and enduring.
