- 1:08Our last speaker for the day is a gentleman that is been in the
- 1:14industry for quite a period of time has seen a lot of the
- 1:18evolution of the track industry both from a construction
- 1:21standpoint, a product development standpoint, as well
- 1:25as just different brands that have come in and out of the of
- 1:29the Track World here over the recent decades.
- 1:32Guy Thomas is our Senior Director of Technical Support
- 1:37for APT and Record Tan. APT being Advanced Polymer
- 1:42Technologies who was the manufacturer of our track
- 1:45systems in Pennsylvania, great organization that you should be
- 1:50familiar with as well. Guy's going to talk a little bit
- 1:53about track systems as well as answer any questions you might
- 1:57have concerning tracks and things.
- 2:00When I came on board here with Record Tan in 2023, coming from
- 2:06the the athletic surfacing of turf, I didn't know much about
- 2:11tracks. And for the grace of God, Guy
- 2:14Thomas took me under his wing and it's taught me so much.
- 2:18Big mentor to me and I'm grateful for his for his time
- 2:23and the knowledge that he shared with me has been phenomenal.
- 2:27I'm still learning everyday from the guy.
- 2:29So, without further ado, Guy Thomas.
- 2:31Thanks, Tim. Good afternoon, everybody.
- 2:35Appreciate you coming to this record and discussion,
- 2:38especially speaking about gel tracks.
- 2:42So again, my name's Guy Thomas. I'm the global technical
- 2:46director for Advanced Polymer. We're the company that actually
- 2:49makes the materials that make up this this gel stuff and it's
- 2:54really cool. Want to be able to give you a
- 2:56little bit of history on that. I can tell you from the global
- 3:00role sounds kind of, you know, interesting, impressive.
- 3:03All that really means is I get a lot of calls all hours of the
- 3:07day. So as Tim said, industry
- 3:11veterans, so some of the old timers here, you may go back to
- 3:14the three M Parton days. That was my learning grounds on
- 3:19the polyurethanes. It's an interesting industry and
- 3:23for all of us that are in the track business, what you really
- 3:27have to understand historically, and we all started, you know,
- 3:31working, you know, running on soil, grass.
- 3:35It really wasn't until cinders came out that we started to look
- 3:39at it as an all weather track and cinders were actually used
- 3:42all the way up to the 64 Olympic Games.
- 3:46It wasn't until the Mexico Games in 68 that the three M tartan
- 3:51track was installed. So that was actually the very
- 3:54first synthetic track used in that marketplace.
- 3:59Since 68 urethane tracts have been developed in a lot of
- 4:04different aspects of the different systems and we can go
- 4:07through it a little briefly. You basically have three basic
- 4:11systems in the marketplace. You have a base mat, structural
- 4:15spray, a pore system. You have a sandwich, an industry
- 4:19term. So you have a base layer and
- 4:21then you have the top layer on top of that and then you have a
- 4:24full pore. The full pore is consider the
- 4:28top of the line system. When you look at the the
- 4:31systems, they basically go from good, better, best in budget and
- 4:36performance and durability. The top of the line systems are
- 4:41the full core systems. That leads us into the gel
- 4:44system here today. The gel was developed from a
- 4:49chemical standpoint about 10 years ago.
- 4:52Our first track was Du Page College, and from there we work
- 4:57to develop it further. The uniqueness about the gel is
- 5:02that, well, let me let me just read exactly what a gel is
- 5:06because it's kind of technical there.
- 5:08I will encumber here. It's technical, but it's an
- 5:12interesting take. A gel is a material that
- 5:15occupies a unique space between a solid and a liquid, exhibiting
- 5:20the properties of both. It's a coherent mass that
- 5:23consisting of a liquid and particles too small.
- 5:27Think nanotechnology that can actually be seen by a
- 5:30microscope. So we're actually taking those
- 5:33type of chemicals and combining it with a track system to create
- 5:37world class tracks. And so as a tech guy, in trying
- 5:42to maybe not geek out and talk about all those types of things,
- 5:46I tried to think what other technology or what other example
- 5:51can I make that'll make sense? So I would assume everybody here
- 5:55buys cars, they buy trucks, and you're like, well, I'm not sure
- 5:59where he's going with this. So when you buy one of those
- 6:02things, you're typically looking at it like, you know, what's the
- 6:05brand, what's the color, you know, what's the make, what's
- 6:09the model, what's the history. So you look at that kind of
- 6:12thought process and you try to lay that over on a track.
- 6:17So now what we're going to say is anytime you're looking to
- 6:21even buy any one of those vehicles, you may say, hey, I
- 6:24really stuck on the brand. But let's face it, guys, every
- 6:27time you buy the vehicle, what's important, you want to look
- 6:30under the hood, right? You want to see what's under
- 6:33there, What's, what's making this thing go?
- 6:35Why is it fast? So what we're talking about
- 6:38today on the gel is we want you guys to understand that as the
- 6:41track is constructed, we want you to look under the hood.
- 6:45So in this case, I'm peeling the top layer of this track system
- 6:49off, and that's what this gel is.
- 6:51This is the driving thing that makes these tracks work and give
- 6:56you the performance. What's unique about this, even
- 7:00while I'm I'm going to talk about the gel, is this top
- 7:03layer. Again, we're looking under the
- 7:05hood to the gel, but this top layer is unique in its own
- 7:10properties. This material was used as an
- 7:14overlay on the Jamaican track last year, and just by putting
- 7:19this Wrecker tan overlay on that old track, Thompson ran the 7th
- 7:25fastest 100 meters in record. So when you start looking at the
- 7:30ability of the gel to give all the properties on that track and
- 7:34overlay it with a top layer to give it that performance, we're
- 7:38giving you the best of the both worlds there.
- 7:41So what we're trying to tell the people here today is to take the
- 7:46time to look at the benefits of that gel.
- 7:49The the main benefit of this system in this gel is from an
- 7:54athletic standpoint. Your athletes can go out and run
- 7:58on this track and train very hard.
- 8:00You're spending 90% plus time from a training aspect versus a
- 8:05meet aspect, and yet you can have those athletes train on
- 8:09that track long and hard and they can recover from it.
- 8:15And the important thing is with that meat, when that gun goes
- 8:18off, you're going to be able to get world class times on these
- 8:22tracks. So again, I guess what we're
- 8:25trying to say here today for you guys, and I'm not a sales guy,
- 8:30but you know what I want to tell you guys, over the years I've
- 8:33installed a lot of these tracks and I'm telling you that this
- 8:37track as all those unique characteristics, they're going
- 8:42to give you the best combination of a training track and a
- 8:46performance track. So any questions on that?
- 9:00It holds up well to the public use.
- 9:02So again, going to my physical sample here, that top layer has
- 9:07a holds the APDM granules in for the surface.
- 9:12It gives you your final color, your texture and your
- 9:14wearability. So it holds up very well long
