Latest / Elon Musk Podcast / New Verification Policies of Social Media Platform X
Transcript
- 0:00Hi everybody and welcome back to another episode of the Elon Musk
- 0:03Podcast. Today we have quite a complex
- 0:06topic to unravel. It's a story that has just come
- 0:09to the surface regarding the social media platform X,
- 0:12formerly known as Twitter. Now this platform is now
- 0:15allowing paid users to verify their accounts using government
- 0:20ID's. And what's notable is that this
- 0:22new form of identification isn't available everywhere.
- 0:24Specifically, users in the European Union, the European
- 0:28Economic Area, and the United Kingdom are excluded.
- 0:32And why is this change even happening?
- 0:35Well, ostensibly to prevent impersonation and keep the
- 0:38platform secure. But there are many layers to
- 0:41peel back here, including concerns over data privacy, the
- 0:45influence of external companies in this process, in the
- 0:48bifurcation of the user base into paid and freed categories.
- 0:54Now the feature has its origins in Israel, where the company
- 0:58Authentics is facilitating its new ID verification process.
- 1:03Data, potentially including biometric information, will be
- 1:07stored for a period of up to 30 days, raising eyebrows about
- 1:11personal privacy. And here's another twist.
- 1:14ID based verification is currently available only for
- 1:18paid users, creating another divide in an already stratified
- 1:22online space. Now let's start by looking at
- 1:26how X is implementing this ID verification.
- 1:30The initiative seems to be a protective measure that aims at
- 1:33preventing impersonation and in the future regulating access to
- 1:37age specific content. X is teaming up with Authentics
- 1:41and Israeli based firm specializing in identity
- 1:45verification. A pop up window will prompt
- 1:48users to upload their government issued ID's and the information
- 1:52collected will be stored for up to 30 days.
- 1:54Now this development could explain why X recently updated
- 1:57its privacy policy to include cards for biometric information,
- 2:02a term that has been causing a lot of discussion lately.
- 2:06Now if you go through this process, your profile report a
- 2:09note saying your government ID has BeenVerified.
- 2:12But there's a catch. You only see this verification
- 2:14status when clicking on the blue mark on the profile.
- 2:18And this makes us wonder, is this another status symbol or a
- 2:22genuine measure for concrete security?
- 2:25Now moving out to the benefits of the verification, what do you
- 2:29really get from this? X states that users verified IDs
- 2:33will get prioritized support from X services, although the
- 2:37specifics of what that means are somewhat shredded in history and
- 2:41the tangible benefits appear limited, especially given that
- 2:44this whole mechanism is locked behind a paywall.
- 2:46The service is exclusive to paid users, at least for now.
- 2:51And in a similar vein, X allows their paid users to hide their
- 2:55verification check marks if they choose to do so, which also
- 2:59seems contradictory to the stated goal of transparency and
- 3:03security. So is the platform enhancing
- 3:05security or merely adding another tier of exclusivity to
- 3:09its services now? Remember, Twitter, now
- 3:12transformed into X, had previously discontinued its
- 3:16legacy verification program. The action led to some chaos,
- 3:20with top accounts losing their check marks.
- 3:22But that check mark soon made its comeback, underscoring how
- 3:26important it has become as a status symbol.
- 3:29And when it comes to privacy, X made another change last month
- 3:32that gave it the power to capture users, biometric data,
- 3:36educational background, and job history.
- 3:38These changes are unfolding at a time when X's parent company is
- 3:42under scrutiny for its data privacy practices, adding
- 3:45another layer of complexity to this verification process.
- 3:49Now let's turn our gaze toward Europe, where this feature is
- 3:53not yet available. X sidesteps European markets,
- 3:56presumably due to stringent data protection laws.
- 4:00Given this new system potentially involves the
- 4:03collection and storage of sensitive personal data, it's
- 4:05understandable that X would tread carefully in these
- 4:08jurisdictions. But it doesn't mention that it
- 4:11plans to extend this feature to Europe soon, leaving us
- 4:14pondering the legal gymnastics that will be required to make
- 4:17this happen. Now it's worth mentioning the
- 4:19competition. There's Blue Sky.
- 4:21Funded by Twitter and backed by Twitter cofounder Jack Dorsey,
- 4:25which recently hit a million users, Blue Sky has adopted A
- 4:29decentralized approach and aims to remain free, offering a paid
- 4:33domain service as a means for users to verify their identity.
- 4:37Then there's Metas Threads, which read 100 million users in
- 4:41just a week after becoming available in July.
- 4:44It seems the landscape of social media is witnessing interesting
- 4:47developments in terms of user verification and identity
- 4:51management, making X's steps even more noteworthy.
- 4:55It's essential to touch on the reactions from the public and
- 4:58users of the platform too. There's clear split in opinions,
- 5:02as some viewing the new verification process as a
- 5:04necessary step towards ensuring platform security, while others
- 5:08see it as an intrusion into personal privacy.
- 5:11There's a strong sentiment that the move to offer this
- 5:13verification only to paid users sets a dangerous precedent.
- 5:18It creates an online hierarchy and potentially marginalizes
- 5:21those can't afford or choose not to opt for the paid version.
- 5:25Now, Authentics involvement brings in its own set of
- 5:29concerns. External companies having access
- 5:32to sensitive user data and personal data has always been a
- 5:35contentious issue, while Azure's users that the data is securely
- 5:39stored and only kept for limited time.
- 5:41Past incidents with other platforms have made users wary.
- 5:45Now this partnership evolves and what it means for users, data
- 5:49privacy will be crucial in determining the public's trust
- 5:52in this new feature. Now, from a business standpoint,
- 5:56though, X's move is strategic. The page here offers an
- 5:59additional revenue stream in an age where platforms are looking
- 6:03for sustainable monetization methods outside traditional
- 6:06advertising, and by adding exclusive features like ID
- 6:10verification to the paid, tier X is creating a premium experience
- 6:14for its subscribers. But this approach begs the
- 6:16question, is online safety and security a luxury only a few can
- 6:21afford now? As we project into the future,
- 6:24it's interesting how to how the shift will impact online
- 6:27interactions. Will other platforms follow
- 6:30suit, making ID verification a common feature?
- 6:33Or will there be push back, leading to more decentralized
- 6:36platforms where user privacy is paramount?
- 6:39Additionally, as online misinformation continues to be a
- 6:42significant concern, it's worth asking if ID verification play a
- 6:46role in curbing the spread of fake news and ensuring more
- 6:50authentic online interaction. While it's not a foolproof
- 6:53solution, the biggest step in the right direction, the realm
- 6:56of online identity and verification is very complex.
- 7:00As platforms like X continue to adapt and change their
- 7:03strategies, the balance between ensuring user security and
- 7:06upholding data privacy remains delicate.
- 7:09It's essential for users to stay informed and understand the
- 7:11changes that directly impact them, and we conclude this
- 7:14discussion. One thing's clear, the digital
- 7:16world is changing and as users, we need to be proactive in
- 7:20understanding these changes, in adapting accordingly.
