- 0:47Kate Woodward Young: Welcome back to today's conversation.
- 0:49Kate Woodward Young: And I am so excited because, you know, we've got to bring more of the South to today's conversation.
- 0:55Kate Woodward Young: So you gotta love those folks that come, well, all the way from Florida, and we're all dealing with it being really, really hot, which means that we get really, really sweaty, don't we?
- 1:06Kate Woodward Young: Right?
- 1:06Kate Woodward Young: Like it's just gross.
- 1:08Kate Woodward Young: So, but today I really do want to kind of have a conversation, and we're actually gonna start with a conversation today about as an educator, as a director, as someone who is passionate about early childhood, sometimes you just lose your sparkle, or maybe you lose your light.
- 1:28Kate Woodward Young: So today, LaTroya is joining us from the preschool posse, and we are going to have a conversation about what that means and how to find and where to find resources for you, whether you're a director, an owner, regardless of your role in the industry.
- 1:44Kate Woodward Young: So, LaTroya, tell us a little bit about how you got into child care, and from there we're just gonna have a conversation.
- 1:51SPEAKER_01: Okay, hey y'all.
- 1:53SPEAKER_01: Um, I got into child care when I was telling my age here, 16 years old.
- 1:59SPEAKER_01: Um, it started for me.
- 2:01SPEAKER_01: I needed community service hours, and the local childcare was like, you can come and get your hours here.
- 2:07SPEAKER_01: So that's what I did.
- 2:09SPEAKER_01: Uh shortly after I graduated from high school with honors, did all the things.
- 2:13SPEAKER_01: I was supposed to go to school for cosmetology.
- 2:16SPEAKER_01: Believe that.
- 2:17SPEAKER_01: Um, ended up uh getting pregnant with my son, and I needed a job.
- 2:22SPEAKER_01: So I ended up falling back on the very thing that I knew, which was child care.
- 2:26SPEAKER_01: It was something that I was good at.
- 2:27SPEAKER_01: It was something that came natural to me.
- 2:29SPEAKER_01: So I applied for a summer camp counselor position, and I've been in childcare for the last going on 16 years.
- 2:38Kate Woodward Young: Well, you know what?
- 2:39Kate Woodward Young: We're so glad that you've joined the profession and that you are still here.
- 2:43Kate Woodward Young: And not only that, kind of sounds like your goal is to bring people up and help them through perhaps maybe personal or professional issues that maybe they didn't see coming.
- 2:54Kate Woodward Young: 100%.
- 2:55Kate Woodward Young: So tell us, yeah, yeah.
- 2:57Kate Woodward Young: So tell me a little bit about why you started the preschool posse.
- 3:01Kate Woodward Young: What was the the the goal behind um starting a an on that predominantly online, right?
- 3:09Kate Woodward Young: Like an online group for folks to to connect.
- 3:12Kate Woodward Young: What made you decide to do that?
- 3:14SPEAKER_01: Well, it started with just my own personal story, right?
- 3:18SPEAKER_01: Like I've been in this industry for a really long time.
- 3:20SPEAKER_01: I have a lot of friends that are in the industry as well.
- 3:23SPEAKER_01: And you have that season where you're like, I don't know if I want to do this anymore.
- 3:27SPEAKER_01: I don't know if I can.
- 3:28SPEAKER_01: Um, the demands are high.
- 3:31SPEAKER_01: So let's be real.
- 3:32SPEAKER_01: Burnout is real.
- 3:33SPEAKER_01: Uh losing staff and turnover is a thing.
- 3:37SPEAKER_01: And I think that I just started the preschool policy because I didn't want educators to lose their fire.
- 3:42SPEAKER_01: I I was seeing a lot of educators leave the industry because they were tired, they were burnt out, they felt like they couldn't do it anymore.
- 3:51Kate Woodward Young: Absolutely.
- 3:52Kate Woodward Young: So, what are some of the resources or what are some of the things that you heard people going, oh, I wish I had?
- 3:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, absolutely.
- 3:59SPEAKER_01: I think that one of the biggest things that I hear in this industry, myself personally, is I wish I had access to someone that understands.
- 4:07Kate Woodward Young: Is there a delay?
- 4:09Kate Woodward Young: You know, so yeah, like that an extra, that, that, that hear, that, that somebody with some ears that's been there.
- 4:16SPEAKER_01: 100%.
- 4:17SPEAKER_01: Someone that has not only been there, but they can relate, right?
- 4:21SPEAKER_01: Like they can actually give me tangible resources that I can use right now in the moment to get through my day.
- 4:28Kate Woodward Young: So one of the things that I think a lot of us get stuck on is when we start hearing people talk about resources, right?
- 4:34Kate Woodward Young: Because that could mean anything to anyone.
- 4:38Kate Woodward Young: So give me an example of maybe a resource that you knew you needed, or even maybe another educator that you were talking to that you you knew they needed, and you were able to help them find that resource.
- 4:51Kate Woodward Young: So tell me that story.
- 4:53SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 4:53SPEAKER_01: Um, I'll use myself for an example.
- 4:56SPEAKER_01: Um, if that's okay.
- 4:58SPEAKER_01: Um, being in childcare, I again I grew up in this industry.
- 5:02SPEAKER_01: I was literally doing it since I was 16, all the way to my big old age now.
- 5:07SPEAKER_01: And I literally had to learn and navigate throughout the process.
- 5:12SPEAKER_01: And I think one of the things that I wish I had was access to a mentor that could kind of break down and explain me, explain to me the things that I was trying to accomplish, for instance.
- 5:23SPEAKER_01: Um, I started in the classroom and then I kind of grew up into leadership.
- 5:27SPEAKER_01: But what they don't tell you is the difference between being in the classroom and being behind the desk.
- 5:32SPEAKER_01: Um, they're two different roles and responsibilities.
- 5:35SPEAKER_01: They are two different roles and responsibilities.
- 5:38SPEAKER_01: And just because you're good at one thing does not necessarily mean that you're automatically going to be good at the other.
- 5:44Kate Woodward Young: Oh, absolutely.
- 5:45Kate Woodward Young: And one of the things that, you know, we've been telling directors now for almost 25 years is you were trained to be a teacher, especially if you were a good teacher, right?
- 5:55Kate Woodward Young: You got you got you might even have a degree, you might have a CDA, and then you did such a great job as a teacher, they promoted you, and somehow they thought you were gonna do that job really well with zero.
- 6:06Kate Woodward Young: Right.
- 6:07Kate Woodward Young: And so, you know, that is part of why, you know, Director Success Academy started doing what we started doing 25 years ago, and that's you know, training directors to do that job.
- 6:18Kate Woodward Young: And so uh I love the fact that you wanted that mentor, you wanted somebody to lead the way for you, and so now you're getting to do that.
- 6:27Kate Woodward Young: And so you've got members from all over the country that are part of the preschool posse, and that folks have found you on social media and word of mouth and by their friends.
- 6:37Kate Woodward Young: What is it that attracts people to the preschool posse?
- 6:42SPEAKER_01: Like what why do people come there?
- 6:44SPEAKER_01: I definitely think it's my heart and my passion for the work that I do.
- 6:48SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna find the answer.
- 6:50SPEAKER_01: And if I don't know the answer, I'm gonna connect you to someone that does.
- 6:54SPEAKER_01: And I think that that is what keeps people drawn to the community because not only do I show that I care for children and families, I care about you as a person, you as an educator, you as an owner, you as an idea, you as a director.
- 7:07SPEAKER_01: And I think that that is what we're looking for in today's time with everything going on in the world.
- 7:12SPEAKER_01: Sometimes you just need somebody to care about you.
- 7:14SPEAKER_01: I love that.
- 7:15Kate Woodward Young: And I wish, I wish somewhere on the preschool posse there was a you.
- 7:19Kate Woodward Young: Like I think you need to figure out how to misspell it.
- 7:21Kate Woodward Young: Like maybe preschool needs to be instead of two O's, it needs to be a you.
- 7:25Kate Woodward Young: You know, I'm just like a you.
- 7:27Kate Woodward Young: I think that is so important.
- 7:29Kate Woodward Young: I think that is just so important because, you know, there are like you can find, I mean, I feel like I turn on social media and every time I turn around, there's somebody else, some other person's now a coach or a this or a that.
- 7:40Kate Woodward Young: And, you know, um, we we won't talk about the fact that I've been in um about twice as long as you have.
- 7:47Kate Woodward Young: Uh so I was like, I was doing the math and I'm like, that's it.
- 7:52Kate Woodward Young: Um, but but we're at different stages, right?
- 7:54Kate Woodward Young: So somebody who's been in the industry for six to 10 years is gonna vibe with you, where somebody who's been in for 16 to 20 or even 31 is gonna look at me and go, oh, she's been in for 32.
- 8:07Kate Woodward Young: Okay, and she's still alive.
- 8:09Kate Woodward Young: I'm gonna follow her because I'm there, right?
- 8:11Kate Woodward Young: And so like every person is gonna need different people.
- 8:15Kate Woodward Young: Like, I don't have a problem having other coaches, consultants, trainers, people who are passionate about the industry be part of the conversation because that's just what it is.
- 8:27Kate Woodward Young: It's a conversation.
- 8:28Kate Woodward Young: And, you know, there's probably half a million people in early childhood education across the United States.
- 8:36Kate Woodward Young: And, you know, our podcast is in 125 countries, and so we get really excited about being able to support folks regardless of what country they're in.
- 8:46Kate Woodward Young: And we just want to make sure that you find your version of a of a group, right?
- 8:52Kate Woodward Young: So whatever you want to call them, whether they're a posse, whether you're they're your gotta be careful about that term tribe, you know, the you know that it's like whatever your group is, right?
- 9:04Kate Woodward Young: So we want to make sure that you find your group.
- 9:07Kate Woodward Young: Now, I know you were telling me about some of the stuff that you guys do as a group to support those who might be struggling, because we all know that uh there's not a lot of frontline staff that are making so much that money is not an object.
- 9:22SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 9:23SPEAKER_01: Sorry, it seems like there's a little bit of a delay there, but we do we do have there is, but but I think we're figuring it out.
- 9:30SPEAKER_01: So yes, at the preschool posse, we do have a community-funded initiative.
- 9:38SPEAKER_01: Um, every month for the past two months, we have been giving away$500 to someone in our community, and it's for them to use, whether it's professionally or personally.
- 9:47SPEAKER_01: Um, so it can be going towards your classes, towards you improving your classroom, or taking a class to help you further your education and your knowledge, or sometimes you just need some help personally, whether it's, you know, getting the car fixed or, you know, just taking some time for self-care.
- 10:02SPEAKER_01: That community-funded initiative is for you and it's something that we just kind of came up with to give back.
- 10:09Kate Woodward Young: Well, and I love the fact that the community came up with it.
- 10:13Kate Woodward Young: It wasn't like you came um with this grand scheme of things that this was an ulterior motive or that this was part of the purpose, right?
- 10:21Kate Woodward Young: Like it became something that the community is moving forward on.
- 10:26Kate Woodward Young: What else do we want to do?
- 10:28Kate Woodward Young: Right, what what else could support uh the educators and the owners and the industry that, you know, have kind of gravitated towards us, right?
- 10:36Kate Woodward Young: Like we like them, they like us.
- 10:38Kate Woodward Young: So, with that, what are some of the things that if somebody's still trying to figure out whether or not you're their person or your people are their people, um, how would the how would they know?
- 10:50Kate Woodward Young: Where would they go?
- 10:50Kate Woodward Young: What would they, what might be that person?
- 10:52Kate Woodward Young: Is it somebody who's overwhelmed?
- 10:54Kate Woodward Young: Is it somebody who's looking to go through, maybe go to the next level?
- 10:58Kate Woodward Young: Maybe it's is it geographically?
- 11:03Kate Woodward Young: I know the answers to these questions.
- 11:05Kate Woodward Young: I'm just letting you answer them.
- 11:07SPEAKER_01: Thank you.
- 11:08SPEAKER_01: Um I think that like I said earlier, it's definitely for the person in early childhood education that they feel like they might be on their wits' end.
- 11:18SPEAKER_01: They might feel like they're one foot in and one foot out the door.
- 11:22SPEAKER_01: And that's how you know that the preschool posse is the community for you because we are a village.
- 11:27SPEAKER_01: Um, we support one another, we encourage one another, we connect you with the resources that you need to be successful.
- 11:33SPEAKER_01: And if you're looking for a sisterhood where we're all on the same level, like no one person is greater than the other, then the preschool posse is for you.
- 11:42SPEAKER_01: I love that.
- 11:43Kate Woodward Young: So somebody is like going, okay, well, I've heard the story or I heard her example, but well, I don't really know if I'm burned out.
- 11:53Kate Woodward Young: How would somebody even know if maybe this is something they need?
- 11:57Kate Woodward Young: What might be um kind of that, hey, um, yeah, this is definitely you.
- 12:04SPEAKER_01: If you get in your car after a long day of work and you just sit there for a minute, this group is for you.
- 12:12SPEAKER_01: Um, I definitely say that the literally, we've all been there.
- 12:16SPEAKER_01: Like you just sit there for a minute and you're trying to regroup from the day, and you're just like, what did I just get out of?
- 12:23SPEAKER_01: Um, I think that that is how you know that you're burnt out.
- 12:27SPEAKER_01: When you get home, and for me, I have four children at home.
- 12:30SPEAKER_01: I have four children and a fiance.
- 12:32SPEAKER_01: And when I was working in childcare as a full-time director, one of the things that told me that I was burnt out was when I didn't have time for my own children.
- 12:42SPEAKER_01: Um, when I didn't want to come home and I didn't want to cook, when I didn't want to, when I walked in the door and I took off my wig, my bra, and my shoes, and I was done for the day.
- 12:52SPEAKER_01: That is how I knew that I was burnt out.
- 12:55SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 12:56Kate Woodward Young: Oh, I love that example.
- 12:58Kate Woodward Young: Um, maybe not all of the pieces and parts as a mother of four, also.
- 13:02Kate Woodward Young: Um, I can definitely recall those days where as a director, like it's like, oh no, just somebody else has got to be in charge of dinner or everybody's having peanut butter and jelly, right?
- 13:12Kate Woodward Young: So um those kinds of right.
- 13:16Kate Woodward Young: And so we definitely, definitely know that there are gonna be times where things are gonna work, things aren't gonna work.
- 13:22Kate Woodward Young: And I think that having a place where you can come and bring that.
- 13:26Kate Woodward Young: So one of the things I always encourage folks to do is never, ever, ever take your emotions and your frustrations.
- 13:35Kate Woodward Young: Um, I I what I use the phrase I usually use is like down a level, right?
- 13:41Kate Woodward Young: So like if you're looking for um, if you're the director, only take it to the owner and above, right?
- 13:47Kate Woodward Young: Like you can't ever take your complaints to, you know, their, you know, to your to your staff who were right there with you, right?
- 13:55Kate Woodward Young: Like it's always got to be somebody above.
- 13:57Kate Woodward Young: Um, where if you are um a teacher, you can maybe, maybe take it to an administrator.
- 14:06Kate Woodward Young: But what's better is taking it to another teacher in another city who's never gonna know your directors, who's never gonna know your owners, right?
- 14:14Kate Woodward Young: So you definitely gotta know who's in your in your posse, right?
- 14:16Kate Woodward Young: Like you gotta be careful.
- 14:17Kate Woodward Young: Like, you know, um, I have a rule for 20 minutes, 20 miles, like you can't complain.
- 14:22Kate Woodward Young: Um, and so in this particular situation, definitely make sure who's on.
- 14:29Kate Woodward Young: Make sure you're gonna be able to do it.
- 14:32Kate Woodward Young: Make sure your owners and directors haven't joined the posse before you start um um bashing people.
- 14:38Kate Woodward Young: Um, but we all need to be able to have a place where a safe place to vent.
- 14:41Kate Woodward Young: And I think that that is um, or just like you said, but I think you used the line before where people have been there and like they they're like, Oh, yeah, you get me, right?
- 14:52Kate Woodward Young: Like so, and I loved your car example.
- 14:54Kate Woodward Young: Um, I I think the the car and the dinner example are the two that resonated with me.
- 14:58Kate Woodward Young: Because I was like, You've been in my car.
- 15:01Kate Woodward Young: Are you that little fly on the wall?
- 15:05Kate Woodward Young: Yes.
- 15:07Kate Woodward Young: So if somebody is still not sure, like they still they're they're like, I still don't know.
- 15:13Kate Woodward Young: Uh you know, maybe this is to I'm just a teacher, which is my least favorite phrase in the world, justa.
- 15:19Kate Woodward Young: But somebody's listening and they think they're a teacher and they're not really sure this is the right place for them.
- 15:25Kate Woodward Young: Maybe it might be a better place for somebody else.
- 15:29Kate Woodward Young: What makes this accessible for them?
- 15:32SPEAKER_01: I think that what makes it accessible for them, if you're still on the fence about it for sure, um, it's up to you.
- 15:39SPEAKER_01: Like you you get out what you put in.
- 15:42SPEAKER_01: So if you don't put in anything, you can't expect to get anything in return.
- 15:46SPEAKER_01: And that's not just within the community, that's in life.
- 15:49SPEAKER_01: So I think that knowing that and and just being real about it, where you are in your journey, that's the only way that you're going to reach the next level is being real with who you are as a person, where you're at in ECE or beyond, and knowing that you have access to the right resources, but you have to have that desire and that want to.
- 16:12SPEAKER_01: My mom always told me, a closed mouth don't get fit.
- 16:15SPEAKER_01: So you can't eat you can't eat if you don't open your mouth.
- 16:20SPEAKER_01: There are people out there that want to help you.
- 16:22SPEAKER_01: There are people out there that want to point you in the direction that want to give you what it is so that you can continue on and enjoy your career and do it with passion and do it with peace and do it with purpose.
- 16:32SPEAKER_01: But you have to tap in.
- 16:34SPEAKER_01: You have to get around the people, the right people that mean you well and want to see you succeed and thrive.
- 16:41SPEAKER_01: I've literally been in this field for over 15 years.
- 16:44SPEAKER_01: I started in your position.
- 16:46SPEAKER_01: I started in the classroom.
- 16:48SPEAKER_01: I literally went back to school during a pandemic after my job told me that they were closing and I had four mouths to feed while going through a divorce.
- 16:58SPEAKER_01: So, yes, there is a there's a lot of moving parts, but I think that if you're on the fence about joining the community, the first thing that it starts with is you.
- 17:08SPEAKER_01: Where are you?
- 17:09SPEAKER_01: What are you trying to accomplish in the next 30 days, 60 days, 90 days, a year from now?
- 17:14SPEAKER_01: You need to be around people that are going to help you grow and help you bloom and reach your full potential.
- 17:20SPEAKER_01: And you can't do that by yourself.
- 17:22SPEAKER_01: You have to get off of isolated island, you have to speak up, you have to get into rooms that are going to help you.
- 17:29SPEAKER_01: You have to pull, pull up a seat to the table, make room because I'm coming in, and then that is where you're going to see the results.
- 17:37SPEAKER_01: But you can't expect everybody to spoon feed you and you be successful.
- 17:40SPEAKER_01: You have to go out and get it yourself.
- 17:42Kate Woodward Young: Uh, you know what?
- 17:43Kate Woodward Young: I think I just like heard like you you read my book back to me.
- 17:46Kate Woodward Young: I just finished a book that I just wrote.
- 17:49Kate Woodward Young: And I was like, I think I have that exact line in there somewhere.
- 17:52Kate Woodward Young: Uh, but one of the things that I think is so important that I hope that whoever is listening, I don't care whether you are a director, an owner, a leader, maybe you haven't identified yourself as a leader.
- 18:03Kate Woodward Young: Maybe you've just been like sneaking in, listening to some episodes because you're not really sure you want to say it out loud.
- 18:10Kate Woodward Young: Um, I think what LaTroya said is absolutely the most important thing you can get out of today's episode, which is you have to make the decision.
- 18:18Kate Woodward Young: I can't make the decision for you.
- 18:20Kate Woodward Young: Nobody else in the posse can make the decision for you.
- 18:24Kate Woodward Young: You have to make the decision that you want something different.
- 18:27Kate Woodward Young: And your different doesn't necessarily have to look like LaTroa's different or somebody else is different.
- 18:34Kate Woodward Young: There are so many different opportunities in early childhood education.
- 18:38Kate Woodward Young: You can be meant, you can be literally a quality mentor, right?
- 18:42Kate Woodward Young: Like you can work for a licensing agency, you can be a trainer, you can do something just a little bit part-time because you're like, you know, I don't know if I really want to give up leaving the classroom.
- 18:53Kate Woodward Young: Definitely don't know if I want to be in charge of other adults.
- 18:57Kate Woodward Young: You know, maybe I really don't want to have to have anything to do with those parents.
- 19:00Kate Woodward Young: They just scare me.
- 19:01Kate Woodward Young: Uh so, you know, understand, understanding what skills you bring, where your personal passion lies, and and, you know, set some goals because it's really hard to get anywhere if you don't know what your end destination is.
- 19:16Kate Woodward Young: You know, if you're gonna go on vacation, most of us this time of year, I'm pretty sure.
- 19:20Kate Woodward Young: LaTroy, if you said you were going on vacation, would you have a destination decided?
- 19:24Kate Woodward Young: I'm going to Hawaii.
- 19:26Kate Woodward Young: See, now now, and are you getting there with a map?
- 19:30Kate Woodward Young: I'm going to get on a plane.
- 19:32Kate Woodward Young: Yeah, but you had to pick the plane that was going the right direction, right?
- 19:36Kate Woodward Young: Right.
- 19:37Kate Woodward Young: Right.
- 19:37Kate Woodward Young: So, like, you know, like I I so, and I have done this one.
- 19:41Kate Woodward Young: So I I I lived in Ohio with husband number one, and we decided we were gonna go to Myrtle Beach, and this was long before there were smartphones.
- 19:49Kate Woodward Young: And what we knew about Myrtle Beach from where we were is it was south and east, and that's how we went.
- 19:56Kate Woodward Young: And so, um, you know, if you want to get to your destination, A, you have to know where you're going.
- 20:03Kate Woodward Young: And if you've got some mentors, think of them as your map because they're gonna get you there a whole lot quicker than just someplace generally south and east, um, which is gonna take you a little longer, and you're probably gonna have maybe some not direct paths.
- 20:20Kate Woodward Young: Um, but I don't know about you.
- 20:22Kate Woodward Young: Has your life gone in any sort of direct path?
- 20:25SPEAKER_01: It it has not always been linear, I will say.
- 20:28SPEAKER_01: There have been some times where I was going round and round in circles.
- 20:32SPEAKER_01: So listen to Kate.
- 20:35SPEAKER_01: You were on a roundabout.
- 20:36Kate Woodward Young: Is that what you were saying?
- 20:37Kate Woodward Young: Like you're like, I think everything on the wrong and I wanted to get off.
- 20:41Kate Woodward Young: You're like, that was my accent.
