Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Andrew Dickens: It's time to do something about South Auckland's dirt bikes
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Hey, this job of being a politician, of being a
- 0:02Speaker 1: leader is always harder than you expect. We learn today
- 0:04Speaker 1: that Mark Mitchell will not be introducing legislation against boy
- 0:08Speaker 1: races this year, even though all year he said he would.
- 0:12Speaker 1: In June, when it was all going off in Levin,
- 0:13Speaker 1: he was promising laws to enable the cops to seize
- 0:16Speaker 1: the vehicles and to keep them and a return to
- 0:19Speaker 1: the good old days of crush of Collins. Let's crush
- 0:21Speaker 1: those cars. But it's never happened because it is and
- 0:24Speaker 1: I quote Mark Complex, no kidding, but look, if he's
- 0:30Speaker 1: got some time on his hands to come up with
- 0:33Speaker 1: some rules and laws about this sort of thing, can
- 0:35Speaker 1: I suggest he look at hitting the problem of South
- 0:37Speaker 1: Orcland's dirt bike hooligans, who made some headlines over the weekend.
- 0:41Speaker 1: South Orcan's dirt bike rabble is a classic gang technique
- 0:46Speaker 1: and it needs to be stopped. What happens is the
- 0:48Speaker 1: gangs give out dirt bikes to the kids and they've
- 0:51Speaker 1: been doing this for ages. And these dirt bikes are
- 0:53Speaker 1: cheap and their mobile and their nippy, and by the way,
- 0:56Speaker 1: they're very handy for hit and run crime. They get
- 0:59Speaker 1: young spects into the bike culture that then carries on
- 1:02Speaker 1: into the adult gangs and they put the kids on
- 1:04Speaker 1: Harley's and Indians, but the dirt bikes is where they start.
- 1:08Speaker 1: And the dirt bikes are swarming and they distract the
- 1:11Speaker 1: police while the more hardened gang crims carry on with
- 1:14Speaker 1: their business not wearing the patches because they're not stupid.
- 1:18Speaker 1: These kid gangs in a way are even more intimidatory
- 1:22Speaker 1: and dangerous than the gangs proper. If you've ever seen
- 1:25Speaker 1: a swarm of dirt bikes in South Auckland, it's absolutely
- 1:29Speaker 1: freakiously scary and horrific. And their kids and they're all
- 1:33Speaker 1: over the place, and they're driving the wrong way up
- 1:35Speaker 1: the motorway, and they swarm on the on the streets
- 1:37Speaker 1: on mass and they indulge in street crime rather than
- 1:41Speaker 1: drugs or the fighting and scrapping, rather than just passing
- 1:44Speaker 1: away some envelopes full of myth. They are far more
- 1:47Speaker 1: visible to people on the street. You are someone in
- 1:49Speaker 1: South Auckland, and yet do you hear anything about the
- 1:52Speaker 1: South Auckland dirt bikes other than every now and then
- 1:55Speaker 1: when they burst into the into the headline. So Mark,
- 1:58Speaker 1: since you haven't got the boys racist stuff done yet?
- 2:01Speaker 1: How about the dirt bike stuff. It's time for a
- 2:04Speaker 1: good crackdown and a good dose of crushing of these bikes.
- 2:07Speaker 1: And it's time for a politician to start talking about
- 2:09Speaker 1: the growing threat. It's time for a politician to start
- 2:11Speaker 1: doing something about it. For more from Early Edition with
