- 0:06Speaker 1: A lesson that most people learn from a very young
- 0:09Speaker 1: age is things aren't always what they seem. For example,
- 0:13Speaker 1: when a child sees a scary silhouette in their bedroom
- 0:16Speaker 1: at night and they think it's a monster, yet it's
- 0:20Speaker 1: revealed to be nothing more than a pile of toys
- 0:22Speaker 1: or clothes in the corner of their room once the
- 0:25Speaker 1: lights are turned on. Now the lesson can be switched
- 0:28Speaker 1: around as well as a person who seems kind may
- 0:32Speaker 1: have bad intentions. That's why we learn to never talk
- 0:36Speaker 1: to strangers. Things aren't always what they seem. Is a
- 0:40Speaker 1: very easy concept to grasp once you understand it. But
- 0:45Speaker 1: the problem is it gets very difficult in the real
- 0:48Speaker 1: world because if it's meant to deceive you, then it
- 0:52Speaker 1: often will.
- 0:54Speaker 2: My name's Ben and I'm Nicole and you're listening to
- 0:58Speaker 2: Wicked and Grim Crime podcasting.
- 1:03Speaker 1: The following podcast material more mature audience listeners. Okay, I
- 1:31Speaker 1: think I think it's working this time.
- 1:33Speaker 2: It appears to be.
- 1:35Speaker 1: I think it is. We gotta cut off last episode,
- 1:37Speaker 1: so I hope you guys can hear us. There were
- 1:40Speaker 1: some technical difficulties.
- 1:42Speaker 2: There were some technical difficulties, that's for sure.
- 1:44Speaker 1: Our show got hijacked, if you could call it that,
- 1:47Speaker 1: I guess yep. So yeah, that Jacko, I know, right,
- 1:52Speaker 1: he's got us. He took the show and he just
- 1:55Speaker 1: made it his own. Yesterday, yes last week we go.
- 1:57Speaker 1: I almost said yesterday. Definitely wasn't yesterday.
- 2:00Speaker 2: Feels like it might have been yesterday.
- 2:02Speaker 1: Touche, touche. But yeah, hopefully you guys enjoyed that. Hopefully
- 2:06Speaker 1: you guys have gone check checking out Gone and checking
- 2:09Speaker 1: out Gone and checked out his show because it's been
- 2:13Speaker 1: doing pretty good actually, so yeah, so thank you for
- 2:15Speaker 1: those who are checking it out, and if you haven't
- 2:17Speaker 1: checked it out yet, should go check it out because
- 2:20Speaker 1: it's cool.
- 2:20Speaker 2: It is. Yeah, yeah, I mean last week was a
- 2:23Speaker 2: total glimpse of what it is, and it's pretty cool.
- 2:25Speaker 2: It's a good show, it is. You sound like shit,
- 2:29Speaker 2: I know, I'm trying. I'm like, maybe people won't notice
- 2:32Speaker 2: I have a well I'm I've had a cold for
- 2:34Speaker 2: going on two weeks now. Yeah, so yeah, my voice
- 2:39Speaker 2: is my voice always gets very affected when any sickness, So.
- 2:42Speaker 1: Yeah, get down with the sickness, which is.
- 2:44Speaker 2: A little bit of a problem when you need your
- 2:47Speaker 2: voice for a podcast.
- 2:48Speaker 1: Yeah, when you're a professional podcaster, so so heal the
- 2:54Speaker 1: fuck up.
- 2:54Speaker 2: Yeah that Ben's presenting again today, so I'll just be doing, uh,
- 3:00Speaker 2: my reactions to whatever the shit he has going on
- 3:02Speaker 2: over there.
- 3:03Speaker 1: Your reactions to whatever the shit I've got going on
- 3:05Speaker 1: over here.
- 3:06Speaker 2: Okay, Yeah, well at least you got tea, Yeah I do.
- 3:09Speaker 1: You got tea for the morning, you got wine for
- 3:12Speaker 1: the evening. I think you said, Yeah, life is good.
- 3:17Speaker 2: Yeah, no, it kind of. It wasn't the best of
- 3:19Speaker 2: timing because I was away. I had some work out
- 3:23Speaker 2: of town in the Okanagan. But you got it. You
- 3:26Speaker 2: just make do, make do. But I never did any
- 3:29Speaker 2: wine touring when I was there because which was malarchy
- 3:32Speaker 2: it is, but also when you're not feeling like one
- 3:34Speaker 2: hundred percent like you don't really want to go taste wine.
- 3:37Speaker 2: I feel like I was like, my taste but are
- 3:39Speaker 2: going to be off. I'll just save it for next time.
- 3:42Speaker 1: That is the first time I've ever heard you say
- 3:45Speaker 1: you don't want any wine.
- 3:47Speaker 2: Well, I don't know. Yeah, it was busy too, because
- 3:49Speaker 2: I was visiting a lot of family. Like I barely
- 3:51Speaker 2: even drink an ounce down there.
- 3:53Speaker 1: Wow, Like I was visiting my family. I'd be drinking NonStop.
- 3:57Speaker 2: I think I maybe had two drinks.
- 3:58Speaker 1: That's it.
- 3:59Speaker 2: Yeah, wow, Yeah.
- 4:01Speaker 1: Your grandma's got to do better. She's got to force
- 4:03Speaker 1: you more booze.
- 4:04Speaker 2: Well yeah, and it was even drinks that I had bought.
- 4:07Speaker 1: Wow, that's kind of sad. You got you gotta you
- 4:11Speaker 1: gotta bring the.
- 4:12Speaker 2: Juice, she offered.
- 4:13Speaker 1: She offered, Well, that's good. Yeah, she's trying to lick
- 4:16Speaker 1: her you up, that's good.
- 4:17Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 4:17Speaker 1: I like your grandma.
- 4:19Speaker 2: I know, my grandma's actually freaking awesome. She's the best.
- 4:24Speaker 1: Grandma's for some reason, just like are awesome. They just
- 4:27Speaker 1: don't give a fuck anymore, and they just do what
- 4:29Speaker 1: they want. And there's like, yeah, I'm gonna look after
- 4:31Speaker 1: you and I'm gonna make sure your life is cool.
- 4:33Speaker 2: And then send you home.
- 4:35Speaker 1: Yeah that's pretty much how that goes.
- 4:38Speaker 2: Yeah, grandma's are awesome.
- 4:41Speaker 1: One, what else is awesome?
- 4:42Speaker 2: We have some awesome people to think, don't we.
- 4:44Speaker 1: We do over on Patreon. Huh, but we're gonna tank
- 4:48Speaker 1: you here because you're that awesome. So this past week
- 4:51Speaker 1: we have item looked at the names. Yet I just
- 4:53Speaker 1: realized I probably tried to pronounce your guys. We have
- 4:58Speaker 1: lexus Costa Dawson, Zaiya and John Blue, Johnny Blue, Jonny Blue,
- 5:08Speaker 1: Johnny Blue, Johnny Blue, Johnny Blue or jon Jonny Blue
- 5:11Speaker 1: or Johnny Blue. I think it's going to be Johnny Blue.
- 5:12Speaker 2: Okay, awesome.
- 5:14Speaker 1: Yeah, So those three just signed up for Patreon over
- 5:16Speaker 1: over there and they getting behind the scenes stuff. They
- 5:18Speaker 1: get an extra episode at the end of the month,
- 5:20Speaker 1: a lot of behind the.
- 5:20Speaker 2: Scenes which is coming up, actually, isn't it.
- 5:22Speaker 1: Yes, it is. And we've got a big trip that
- 5:24Speaker 1: we're going to be doing here down to Vancouver Island
- 5:26Speaker 1: for a family member's wedding, So we're going to go
- 5:29Speaker 1: make sure that we actually do a bit of logging,
- 5:31Speaker 1: get some of that.
- 5:32Speaker 2: Up so and actually maybe vacation a little bit too, Yes, that.
- 5:36Speaker 1: Too, that too. Also, we've got something really cool coming
- 5:42Speaker 1: up in July. We are going to be doing a
- 5:45Speaker 1: trivia night here at a local brewery.
- 5:48Speaker 2: If you're Frinch, George, if you're.
- 5:49Speaker 1: If you're local, pay attention because that's coming up soon.
- 5:51Speaker 1: This's gonna be a dead fall and we are going
- 5:55Speaker 1: to try and see if we can live stream it
- 5:57Speaker 1: for our patrons, So you guys can also join in
- 6:00Speaker 1: on Patreon for that as well when that occurs.
- 6:02Speaker 2: Yeah, I think that's gonna be fun, really fine for it.
- 6:05Speaker 1: Although that reminds me I got to get researching some
- 6:07Speaker 1: questions still. I've got a bunch of bunch. Yeah, we
- 6:11Speaker 1: need more.
- 6:12Speaker 2: Yeah, I can try to help with that too.
- 6:14Speaker 1: Yeah, since you can't be talking a whole bunch, maybe
- 6:16Speaker 1: you could be researching a whole bunch.
- 6:18Speaker 2: Hey, hey it's getting better. This isn't too bad. It
- 6:22Speaker 2: was much worse, much worse.
- 6:23Speaker 1: You are on the downhill or the uphill? Would say
- 6:26Speaker 1: the uphill, yeah, because downhill you're getting worse, but downhill
- 6:29Speaker 1: also you're coasting and it goes easy. Uphill is hard work,
- 6:32Speaker 1: but uphill like sounds more positive. Which way would it be?
- 6:37Speaker 1: I don't even know which way would be, Like, I
- 6:41Speaker 1: can't I.
- 6:43Speaker 2: The downhill then I don't even know.
- 6:45Speaker 1: I would say downhill because it's like you're going up
- 6:48Speaker 1: the hill, you're putting in all the work, and then
- 6:49Speaker 1: it's like, oh, I'm finally getting over this cold, over
- 6:53Speaker 1: the sickness, like you know, you're getting over the cold,
- 6:55Speaker 1: and then it's the downhill. So I think it's the downhill.
- 6:58Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, but it did sound worse. It sounds more negative.
- 7:02Speaker 1: Yeah, because shit's going downhill. So what the fuck English sucks? Man?
- 7:07Speaker 2: Oh my gosh.
- 7:08Speaker 1: Okay, this aside. Let's let's get on with the case today,
- 7:11Speaker 1: shall we. Mm hmm. Well, this one takes place on
- 7:16Speaker 1: Sunday in February of two thousand and two. It was
- 7:20Speaker 1: February seventeenth, to be more specific, Sunday Sunday. Yeah. So
- 7:24Speaker 1: it begins with a father and a son in Phoenix City,
- 7:27Speaker 1: Alabama who are having a normal Sunday evening at home. Now,
- 7:32Speaker 1: the father is Forrest Boyer aka Butch. Everyone called him Butch,
- 7:37Speaker 1: so that's what we're going to be calling him. So
- 7:39Speaker 1: Butch was helping his son get ready for school on Monday. Now,
- 7:43Speaker 1: the week was coming, you know, it was the end
- 7:45Speaker 1: of the new or sorry, the start of the new
- 7:47Speaker 1: school week, which meant ensuring all, you know, necessary school
- 7:50Speaker 1: work and homework is being completed. You know, the weekend
- 7:53Speaker 1: mindset needs to be set aside for the next five days.
- 7:56Speaker 1: For twelve year.
- 7:58Speaker 2: Old Brett, the Sunday even grind take.
- 8:01Speaker 1: Exactly, making sure you're all set, you're all ready to
- 8:03Speaker 1: go for the week ahead. Brett was. He was a
- 8:07Speaker 1: bit of a rambunctious boy, but certainly a good kid.
- 8:10Speaker 1: He was liked by many of his classmates and even
- 8:13Speaker 1: had a girlfriend who he shared some dances with at
- 8:15Speaker 1: the school Valentine's Day dance just a few nights prior. Wowright,
- 8:20Speaker 1: go Brett. So this evening, it was beginning to get late,
- 8:25Speaker 1: and it was just before ten pm. Brett was just
- 8:28Speaker 1: getting ready to take a shower before heading to bed
- 8:31Speaker 1: for the night, and his dad, Butch, who was now
- 8:33Speaker 1: finished helping his son, was just sitting down at the
- 8:36Speaker 1: kitchen table to do some paperwork for his business. So
- 8:40Speaker 1: Butch he was a fifty five year old man and
- 8:42Speaker 1: had a business as a used car salesman where he
- 8:45Speaker 1: dealt in selling and purchasing many vehicles. So often he'd
- 8:48Speaker 1: be doing many title work, paperwork and stuff at the
- 8:52Speaker 1: table at night, making sure that everything he was doing today,
- 8:56Speaker 1: he's catching up at night, making sure that you know,
- 8:58Speaker 1: everything that was coming and going off a lot is
- 9:01Speaker 1: being looked after and taken care of properly. On So
- 9:04Speaker 1: Butch was an extremely hard working individual. He was a
- 9:08Speaker 1: single father, and he really took both roles both as
- 9:12Speaker 1: an entrepreneur and as a father extremely seriously. He made
- 9:17Speaker 1: sure that his son had a good life. He looked
- 9:19Speaker 1: after his kid and the same with his business.
- 9:22Speaker 2: I like him. He sounds awesome.
- 9:24Speaker 1: Butch is awesome. I like Butch is good. Everything was
- 9:29Speaker 1: good for Butch and Brett. Everything was normal in their house.
- 9:32Speaker 1: It was just another weekend, just another Sunday winding down,
- 9:35Speaker 1: just another week was about to start. That is until
- 9:39Speaker 1: a knock came at their front door. Butch was a
- 9:43Speaker 1: bit confused when he first heard it. It was ten pm,
- 9:46Speaker 1: after all, Oh yeah, yeah, and he wasn't exactly expecting
- 9:49Speaker 1: anyone shit that.
- 9:51Speaker 2: Oh I don't think I would answer, well, I.
- 9:54Speaker 1: Was kind of thinking of that too, but by the
- 9:56Speaker 1: sounds of it, I don't think they lived in like
- 9:58Speaker 1: a very trouble neighborhood or anything.
- 10:01Speaker 2: Still, i'd be like scared shitless. But if you were home,
- 10:05Speaker 2: actually I would I would probably answer it.
- 10:08Speaker 1: I would probably answer it as well, if I'm being
- 10:10Speaker 1: one hundred percent honest, but I would probably answer it
- 10:16Speaker 1: ready for something, because there have been times where I've
- 10:19Speaker 1: answered excuse me, I'm starting to sound like you. There's
- 10:22Speaker 1: been times where have answered the door to like, oh,
- 10:26Speaker 1: who's that? Why would the door be like there'd be
- 10:29Speaker 1: someone at the door right now, yeah, getting laid or whatever,
- 10:31Speaker 1: and I've answered the door knowing, Okay, where is the
- 10:35Speaker 1: nearest weapon I can grab where something my fist is
- 10:37Speaker 1: like cocked in my pocket or my hand is in
- 10:40Speaker 1: my pocket on my pocket knife, like things like that,
- 10:43Speaker 1: just ready just in case, right. So, but I certainly
- 10:46Speaker 1: would probably.
- 10:46Speaker 2: Answer it numerous I remember. I can recall actually like
- 10:50Speaker 2: assession with you, if you were at work or something,
- 10:52Speaker 2: I would not answer.
- 10:53Speaker 1: No.
- 10:53Speaker 2: There would be times where if I was not expecting
- 10:55Speaker 2: someone and the door well rang or whatever.
- 10:58Speaker 1: No, that's probably a practice.
- 11:00Speaker 2: I know, which kind of makes me sound like a
- 11:02Speaker 2: complete beauch. But also it's just like, well I'm not
- 11:06Speaker 2: expecting you exactly.
- 11:08Speaker 1: I think that's kind of where like doorbell cams and
- 11:10Speaker 1: stuff come in. Yeah, with like intercom systems and shit,
- 11:13Speaker 1: you can be like what do you want and they're like, oh,
- 11:15Speaker 1: we're here to talk to you about our lord and
- 11:17Speaker 1: save you. And it's like please know or whatever the case.
- 11:22Speaker 1: Or it's like oh my car broke down, or it's
- 11:24Speaker 1: like hey, haven't seen you s in high school? I
- 11:26Speaker 1: wanted to catch up. Fuck off that sort of thing,
- 11:29Speaker 1: you know.
- 11:31Speaker 2: There could be many reasons, but also all those reasons
- 11:33Speaker 2: you just listed, I don't feel like i'd probably want
- 11:37Speaker 2: to open the door for them.
- 11:38Speaker 1: So exactly, the intercom system those doorbell cams definitely make
- 11:42Speaker 1: a difference this instance. Though, even against Butch thinking he
- 11:48Speaker 1: probably shouldn't open the door, he did so. He stood
- 11:52Speaker 1: up on the table, made his way to answer to
- 11:54Speaker 1: see who was there, and when he opened the door,
- 11:56Speaker 1: he was surprised when he was greeted by an officer.
- 11:59Speaker 1: Oh okay, and more specifically, this was a narcotics officer.
- 12:04Speaker 1: So the officer showed him his badge and informed Butch
- 12:07Speaker 1: that he had a warrant for his immediate arrest related
- 12:10Speaker 1: to drug possession.
- 12:12Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, yeah, okay, you sound stunned, well a
- 12:17Speaker 2: little bit. Yeah, I actually that never occurred to me
- 12:19Speaker 2: that it could be like a police officer. Then here,
- 12:21Speaker 2: I'm just like Norton door.
- 12:24Speaker 1: I'm pretty sure if you looked out the window or
- 12:26Speaker 1: for door bell cam or something, then you would be like, oh, officer, yeah,
- 12:30Speaker 1: probably open up. Yeah Butch, Yeah, he was like, oh shit,
- 12:33Speaker 1: there's an officer. And he was even more like, oh shit,
- 12:36Speaker 1: taken aback and stunned when he was told there's a
- 12:39Speaker 1: warrant for his arrest. Yeah, being arrested. He didn't really
- 12:43Speaker 1: know how to react, honestly, it was all happening so
- 12:45Speaker 1: fast before he knew it. He's in handcuffs and he's
- 12:49Speaker 1: being walked outside. So Butch quickly regained his composure and
- 12:53Speaker 1: began trying to reason with the officer. He's like, this
- 12:55Speaker 1: must be a mistake. You must have the wrong person.
- 12:58Speaker 1: I don't have any sort of drugs on me in
- 13:00Speaker 1: my house. I don't even do drugs. He's like, this,
- 13:03Speaker 1: there's a mistake here somewhere. So he assured the officer repeatedly,
- 13:08Speaker 1: but it just fell on deaf ears. Oh no, And
- 13:11Speaker 1: I mean, to be honest, I don't think any officer
- 13:13Speaker 1: would really listen to a culprit saying, oh, I'm innocent,
- 13:15Speaker 1: it wasn't me. You got the wrong guy, Like, I'm
- 13:18Speaker 1: pretty sure that's true. I think they hear that over
- 13:20Speaker 1: and over again.
- 13:21Speaker 2: So, but that's scary for him because his son's.
- 13:24Speaker 1: Inside well exactly so, as Butch was being led out
- 13:29Speaker 1: to an unmarked white Ford Crown Victoria, which is like
- 13:33Speaker 1: the standard police cruiser type Macon model that which was
- 13:38Speaker 1: parked in his driveway. He told the officer who was
- 13:40Speaker 1: leading him, He's like, I've got my twelve year old
- 13:42Speaker 1: son inside and he's alone. Like what should we do?
- 13:45Speaker 1: He's like, I can't be just like arrested and leave
- 13:47Speaker 1: my son alone.
- 13:49Speaker 2: Yeah, that's probably like another crime. Yeah, I know, I'm
- 13:53Speaker 2: maybe not at twelve.
- 13:54Speaker 1: Yeah, So Butch was still handcuffed and put into the
- 13:58Speaker 1: back of the vehicle, where he's with another officer inside
- 14:02Speaker 1: the car. And then the original officer returned to the
- 14:04Speaker 1: house and then walked back out with Butcher's son as well,
- 14:08Speaker 1: who was now also handcuffed.
- 14:10Speaker 2: What.
- 14:11Speaker 1: Yes, and he was led over to the car just
- 14:14Speaker 1: like his dad and put in the back seat next.
- 14:16Speaker 2: To him a twelve year old boy. Yes, okay, that
- 14:20Speaker 2: doesn't seem quite right, but I'm not sure. Okay, what
- 14:24Speaker 2: the hell did the twelve year old boy do? Arrested
- 14:27Speaker 2: for drugs as well?
- 14:28Speaker 1: Maybe Okay, I don't want to get too far ahead
- 14:31Speaker 1: here and just start spilling all the details.
- 14:34Speaker 2: No, okay, yeah, no, we'll keep listening.
- 14:37Speaker 1: Well, the two are now sitting side by side, father
- 14:40Speaker 1: and son handcuffed in the back of the car, and
- 14:43Speaker 1: the officers drove out of the driveway and headed to
- 14:45Speaker 1: the police station. It wasn't long though, that Butcher knew
- 14:49Speaker 1: something wasn't right. At first, he thought he was just
- 14:53Speaker 1: mistaken identity and it would get all sorted out shortly
- 14:56Speaker 1: when he arrived at the station. But when they drove
- 14:59Speaker 1: right the Phoenix City Police Department, Butcher's stomach turned in knots.
- 15:04Speaker 1: It was at that moment he knew that these two
- 15:06Speaker 1: men were not police officers.
- 15:09Speaker 2: Shit, okay, that was like at the back of my mind.
- 15:12Speaker 2: But I'm like, no, oh my gosh, what did.
- 15:16Speaker 1: I say in the intro? Things are not always oh.
- 15:19Speaker 2: All right, okay, this is freaking terrifying. Yes, holy shit,
- 15:26Speaker 2: see that. Okay, when people like are faking faking, I
- 15:30Speaker 2: don't know, impersonating. Yes, there you go to be someone else, like,
- 15:33Speaker 2: especially like a police officer. That is terrifying.
- 15:38Speaker 1: Yeah, well that's why it's a federal offense.
- 15:40Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, okay, yikes.
- 15:44Speaker 1: So instead of heading to the police station, these two
- 15:46Speaker 1: men drove Butcher and his son to an area where
- 15:49Speaker 1: a four lane highway, Highway four thirty one to be specific,
- 15:53Speaker 1: was being constructed. It was isolated and it was dark,
- 15:58Speaker 1: Butch was hauled out of the car and the two
- 16:01Speaker 1: men began brandishing a knife and threatening both him and
- 16:05Speaker 1: his son, saying that they want money, more specifically one
- 16:11Speaker 1: hundred thousand dollars in cash that they said they knew
- 16:15Speaker 1: he had.
- 16:16Speaker 2: Seriously, yes, okay, did he actually have that kind of
- 16:20Speaker 2: money again? Oh, we'll get to that, okay.
- 16:26Speaker 1: Butch was in shock at first. He tried to deny
- 16:29Speaker 1: the claim of any sort of money, but as soon
- 16:31Speaker 1: as the men pressed and insisted on it, Butch gave in.
- 16:35Speaker 1: He told them he had a safe at home with
- 16:38Speaker 1: all the money in it, and he'd let them have
- 16:40Speaker 1: it all if he just didn't get hurt along with
- 16:43Speaker 1: his son. So don't hurt us. I'll give you all
- 16:45Speaker 1: the money I have. It's at home, like that's that's
- 16:48Speaker 1: where it's okay, it just don't hurt us, right.
- 16:50Speaker 2: Well, yeah, I mean like his son's life and his
- 16:53Speaker 2: own life is worth more.
- 16:54Speaker 1: Exactly. So the men agreed, and Butch told them exactly,
- 16:59Speaker 1: we're the safe was in his house. So the men
- 17:01Speaker 1: loaded Butch back up in the car and they drove
- 17:04Speaker 1: right back to his house. Once at home, Butch gave
- 17:08Speaker 1: them the access to the safe or which, by the
- 17:11Speaker 1: sounds of it, was more just like a little box okay,
- 17:15Speaker 1: in his bedroom closet, where inside he had over forty
- 17:19Speaker 1: seven thousand dollars in oh.
- 17:21Speaker 2: No, which he probably worked so hard to get.
- 17:24Speaker 1: Yes, oh, this wasn't enough, though. They were after one
- 17:30Speaker 1: hundred thousand dollars that they knew he had, so they
- 17:34Speaker 1: began to search the house, and despite Butch reassuring them
- 17:38Speaker 1: that's all he had, they kept searching. He was right, though,
- 17:43Speaker 1: that's all the money he had. But the two men
- 17:45Speaker 1: did find something else of interest during their search, a
- 17:49Speaker 1: thirty eight caliber Smith and Wesson revolver, which they took
- 17:53Speaker 1: with them.
- 17:55Speaker 2: How the shit, why do they think that he has
- 17:58Speaker 2: all this money? And like, how do they even know
- 18:01Speaker 2: who he is? And all the Oh my gosh.
- 18:03Speaker 1: Well, there's definitely reasons. There's definitely they have knowledge for
- 18:06Speaker 1: a reason, let's put it that way, which we will
- 18:08Speaker 1: get into. So don't worry about that.
- 18:10Speaker 2: It's not one of your unsolved.
- 18:12Speaker 1: It's not one of my unsolved. No, So we will
- 18:15Speaker 1: get exactly into why they are after this specific hundred
- 18:18Speaker 1: thousand dollars a day. So after they've loaded Butch back
- 18:23Speaker 1: up into the car. After collecting the money from his
- 18:25Speaker 1: house with his son, they drove off once again, ending
- 18:29Speaker 1: up right back to where they were, with the construction
- 18:31Speaker 1: of that highway in progress. So think of it this way,
- 18:36Speaker 1: kind of a desolated area. I mean, there's kind of
- 18:39Speaker 1: another roadway nearby, but there's still like a highway off
- 18:42Speaker 1: on this offshoot being constructed equipment. No one's around. It's
- 18:47Speaker 1: middle of the night, yeah, thing right, Yeah, so that's
- 18:49Speaker 1: exactly where they're finding themselves. And Butch found himself walking
- 18:53Speaker 1: across the dirt with a highway asphalt was soon going
- 18:56Speaker 1: to be laid. He was begging the two men, please
- 18:59Speaker 1: don't hurt myself. So please don't hurt my son. That's
- 19:02Speaker 1: the main thing he's after. He's just like, don't hurt
- 19:04Speaker 1: my fucking son. He's like, leave Brett alone. He was
- 19:07Speaker 1: begging them, begging them.
- 19:09Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, this is just like hurting my heart.
- 19:13Speaker 2: This is impossible.
- 19:14Speaker 1: Hey, it is so. Butch knew if they were after money, clearly,
- 19:18Speaker 1: because that's what they told him. We want this one
- 19:21Speaker 1: hundred thousand dollars.
- 19:22Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 19:22Speaker 1: So he's like, in the morning, when the bank's opened,
- 19:25Speaker 1: we can go to the bank I'll get you more money.
- 19:27Speaker 1: He's like, if that's what you want, I'll get you
- 19:29Speaker 1: all the money I can get you. Just don't hurt us,
- 19:31Speaker 1: don't hurt my son. But it didn't seem like anything
- 19:34Speaker 1: he said was being heard. And Butch knew the men
- 19:38Speaker 1: weren't about to listen to him either. He knew it
- 19:41Speaker 1: was coming because just ahead of him was a pre
- 19:44Speaker 1: dug hole in the ground.
- 19:46Speaker 2: Holy shit, a shallow grave. O. Kay, is like forty
- 19:53Speaker 2: seven thousand dollars not enough? Like what the actual yeah? Wow, yep, okay, man,
- 20:01Speaker 2: can you imagine when he would have saw that hole, just.
- 20:06Speaker 1: Like, I don't want to imagine what that feeling would
- 20:09Speaker 1: be like from being honest, Yeah, especially especially the fact
- 20:15Speaker 1: that you're you're with your son.
- 20:17Speaker 2: Yeah. And because he they also, oh, okay, I don't
- 20:22Speaker 2: know if I should say this, but they also like
- 20:25Speaker 2: weren't going to take the sun at first, but then
- 20:28Speaker 2: he thought that he was with like police officers, and
- 20:31Speaker 2: oh my gosh, this is.
- 20:33Speaker 1: Now to play Devil's advocate on this one. He probably
- 20:37Speaker 1: would have gotten taken anyways, the sun, yes, because they
- 20:41Speaker 1: were after money, which was in the house, so they
- 20:43Speaker 1: would have searched the house and found the sun regardless
- 20:46Speaker 1: of the Dad was speaking up to Sha.
- 20:49Speaker 2: Yeah, they did go back and stuff. Yeah, yes, so.
- 20:52Speaker 1: I believe Brett would have been found either.
- 20:54Speaker 2: Way, regardless, Yes, yeah. So.
- 20:58Speaker 1: As Butch was being led by the men, one of
- 21:01Speaker 1: them suddenly leaned over with a knife and pressed it
- 21:04Speaker 1: right up against the side of his neck and slid
- 21:07Speaker 1: the blade across Butcher's throat, cutting it wide.
- 21:11Speaker 2: Oh my gosh.
- 21:13Speaker 1: As the man said, that's sharp, isn't it.
- 21:17Speaker 2: What the fuck?
- 21:19Speaker 1: So Butch now had a gaping wound across his neck.
- 21:23Speaker 1: He was bleeding and in severe pain, but he wasn't dying,
- 21:28Speaker 1: so the other man grabbed the knife and cut his
- 21:30Speaker 1: throat again.
- 21:31Speaker 2: Oh.
- 21:32Speaker 1: As Butch laid in the ground with his blood now
- 21:35Speaker 1: pooling around him, one of the men sat on top
- 21:38Speaker 1: of him and told him, quote, go to sleep.
- 21:43Speaker 2: Geez, these guys are freaking awful.
- 21:46Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 21:47Speaker 2: Wow wow.
- 21:50Speaker 1: In the background, as Butch was laying on the ground,
- 21:53Speaker 1: he could hear his son, Brett crying and screaming for
- 21:56Speaker 1: the men to stop hurting his dad, to which one
- 21:59Speaker 1: of the men told him him that he needs to
- 22:01Speaker 1: be more concerned about himself and not his dad.
- 22:04Speaker 2: Wow. Okay, this is just like escalating and.
- 22:09Speaker 1: Yeah, you could say hat for sure.
- 22:11Speaker 2: Man, these guys.
- 22:12Speaker 1: Okay, So the man who last cut Butcher's throat spoke
- 22:17Speaker 1: up and told the other quote, I've done one, now
- 22:21Speaker 1: you've done one, and now sorry, I've done one. Now
- 22:24Speaker 1: you do one, referring to probably providing the killing blow
- 22:28Speaker 1: on one. Now you need to provide the killing blow
- 22:30Speaker 1: on one.
- 22:31Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 22:31Speaker 1: Right.
- 22:31Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 22:32Speaker 1: It was only moments later that Butch would hear a
- 22:35Speaker 1: gunshot as one of the men took the stolen pistol
- 22:38Speaker 1: from his home and shot his son, Brett in the head.
- 22:42Speaker 2: Wow.
- 22:44Speaker 1: Brett fell to the ground, but just like his dad,
- 22:48Speaker 1: was a fighter and did not die from the first attack.
- 22:52Speaker 1: The man who shot him said out loud as a
- 22:55Speaker 1: gurgling sound came from the now dying twelve year old boy,
- 22:59Speaker 1: the little mother fucker doesn't want to die, and he
- 23:03Speaker 1: proceeded to shoot him two more times in the head
- 23:06Speaker 1: to ensure he was dead.
- 23:08Speaker 2: Whoa, Okay, this is unbelievable, these fucking people.
- 23:14Speaker 1: Yeah, fuck these two.
- 23:16Speaker 2: Yeah, like they are disgusting.
- 23:18Speaker 1: Oh, they are beyond disgusting. Wow, oh beyond trust me.
- 23:22Speaker 2: Oh yeah.
- 23:25Speaker 1: The two men then proceeded to push Brett's lifeless body
- 23:28Speaker 1: into the shallow grave that they had dug. They then
- 23:31Speaker 1: turned to Butcher, who was still breathing. They then slit
- 23:35Speaker 1: his throat one final time and then drug his body
- 23:40Speaker 1: into the grave as well, laying him on top of
- 23:43Speaker 1: his son before they filled the hole approximately eighteen inches
- 23:46Speaker 1: of dirt and then drove away.
- 23:50Speaker 2: Holy shit, Yeah, okay, wow, I am like just shocked
- 23:57Speaker 2: here and also really need to know what the fuck
- 23:59Speaker 2: is happening.
- 24:01Speaker 1: Well, I do want to say this. It was almost
- 24:04Speaker 1: the perfect murder. It was the perfect spot. Yeah, most
- 24:09Speaker 1: like mostly because a construction site was in a couple
- 24:14Speaker 1: of days going to be covered in asphalt, seeling these
- 24:18Speaker 1: two in a tomb where they would probably never be
- 24:21Speaker 1: found or at least not found for a long time.
- 24:25Speaker 2: I never even thought of that.
- 24:26Speaker 1: Yeah, wow, And that's exactly what these two guys were after.
- 24:30Speaker 1: These two are going to be killed, buried covered nesphalt,
- 24:34Speaker 1: to never be found or at least long after these
- 24:37Speaker 1: guys are gone, and they'd get away with it.
- 24:40Speaker 2: So this was like so premeditated they were really thinking through.
- 24:45Speaker 1: Oh, definitely premeditated. They pre dug a grave.
- 24:47Speaker 2: Well yeah, and like thought thought through, how this can
- 24:51Speaker 2: be like covered forever kind.
- 24:52Speaker 1: Of thing exactly. So they had thought all this through.
- 24:57Speaker 1: They knew that they were going to get away with it,
- 24:58Speaker 1: and they would have a except for one small oversight.
- 25:03Speaker 1: Butch wasn't dead.
- 25:06Speaker 2: No, No, three cuts to the neck.
- 25:09Speaker 1: They sliced his throat three times, and Butch was not dead.
- 25:15Speaker 2: Whoa Okay, Butch is just like incredible.
- 25:20Speaker 1: Yeah, Okay, for the record, is our badass of the
- 25:25Speaker 1: fucking day? Well? Yeah, Butch laid on top of his
- 25:30Speaker 1: now deceased son and was holding his breath under the
- 25:33Speaker 1: piles of dirt as best as he could, all the
- 25:36Speaker 1: while pretending to be dead and listening to his attackers
- 25:41Speaker 1: as they laid dirt on top of him.
- 25:44Speaker 2: Oh my goodness, he.
- 25:46Speaker 1: Could hear them talking, he could hear them laughing, and
- 25:49Speaker 1: he could hear them finally driving away. And at that
- 25:52Speaker 1: moment is when Butch began to dig himself out.
- 25:56Speaker 2: What, yes, is that even possible?
- 26:01Speaker 1: Sixteen sorry, approximately eighteen inches of dirt isn't a whole lot. Okay,
- 26:06Speaker 1: if they dug a proper grave, he probably would have
- 26:08Speaker 1: been screwed.
- 26:09Speaker 2: Okay, yeah.
- 26:12Speaker 1: Immediately once he was out of the grave. He immediately
- 26:15Speaker 1: turned to his son, pulled him out as best he could,
- 26:18Speaker 1: and began doing chest compressions in CPR to try and
- 26:21Speaker 1: revive his son. Oh no, Unfortunately his efforts were in vain.
- 26:28Speaker 1: His son was already deceased. He wasn't ready to give up, though.
- 26:32Speaker 1: He did CPR and chess compressions for as long as
- 26:35Speaker 1: he possibly could, until he couldn't do it anymore and
- 26:39Speaker 1: he had to leave to try and find help. After that,
- 26:43Speaker 1: he was able to flag down a passing by vehicle
- 26:46Speaker 1: on a nearby road and that individual called nine to
- 26:50Speaker 1: one one. Russell County Sergeant Darryl Powell was the first
- 26:55Speaker 1: to arrive on the scene. Butch was there holding a
- 26:58Speaker 1: towel or a shirt. It's hard to really tell. Up
- 27:01Speaker 1: to his neck that was soaked Crimson with his own blood.
- 27:04Speaker 2: Holy, how is he even still functioning?
- 27:07Speaker 1: Yeah? How is he at all? And there is dashcam
- 27:10Speaker 1: footage of this from the sergeant that pulls up on
- 27:14Speaker 1: the scene.
- 27:14Speaker 2: Really, yes, huh, because I could only imagine how much
- 27:18Speaker 2: blood he's losing.
- 27:19Speaker 1: Yeah, he would have lost a lot.
- 27:21Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 27:22Speaker 1: So Sergeant Darryl Powell over the police radio as he
- 27:25Speaker 1: was calling in the incident has this to say, quote,
- 27:29Speaker 1: no bullshit. I've got a man whose throat has been
- 27:32Speaker 1: cut saying his son's buried in a grave down there.
- 27:35Speaker 1: This is a bad one, and he is right.
- 27:39Speaker 2: This is very much so a bad one.
- 27:41Speaker 1: Yes, WHOA. I can't believe like how much strength it
- 27:44Speaker 1: would take to not only muster up the thought of
- 27:50Speaker 1: playing dead, to then dig yourself out of a grave,
- 27:53Speaker 1: to then pull your son out of said grave, try
- 27:56Speaker 1: and do CPR, and then flag down a vehicle and
- 28:01Speaker 1: do all these things that Butch is doing with his
- 28:04Speaker 1: throat cut.
- 28:05Speaker 2: Yeah, because he did a flag down a vehicle, he
- 28:07Speaker 2: had to like walk some sort of a distance as well.
- 28:10Speaker 1: Yes, not there. I'm unsure of the distance exactly how
- 28:12Speaker 1: far he walked, but I don't think it was too far.
- 28:16Speaker 1: But yes, he still would have had to at least
- 28:18Speaker 1: go a little ways. Yeah, the road right, So he's
- 28:21Speaker 1: had to at least go through a bit of a
- 28:22Speaker 1: construction site the next road over. So yeah, So both
- 28:29Speaker 1: the sergeant and the first responders on the scene tried
- 28:32Speaker 1: to usher Bush Butch to the hospital respectably. Like, your
- 28:36Speaker 1: throat's cut three times, You need.
- 28:38Speaker 2: Some care, You really need help.
- 28:40Speaker 1: Yes, let Butch refused to leave, not until he led
- 28:45Speaker 1: them to his son to ensure they got to him.
- 28:50Speaker 2: My goodness, still just like, even in that kind of shape,
- 28:52Speaker 2: just like his main concern is his son.
- 28:55Speaker 1: Yes, And even when he did finally leave or lead
- 28:58Speaker 1: them to his son, he still did I don't want
- 29:00Speaker 1: to leave his son's side. He's like, no, I'm not
- 29:02Speaker 1: going to the hospital here with my son. I got
- 29:04Speaker 1: to stay with my son.
- 29:05Speaker 2: Oh my gosh.
- 29:07Speaker 1: Finally he did go to the hospital, but he was
- 29:10Speaker 1: only going after one of the officers convinced that he
- 29:14Speaker 1: would probably die if he didn't go to the hospital,
- 29:17Speaker 1: and then the attackers would get away with this without
- 29:20Speaker 1: his him being alive for a witness. So that is
- 29:24Speaker 1: the only reason he went to the hospital.
- 29:26Speaker 2: The only reason, because yeah, he's like, these guys need
- 29:29Speaker 2: to get taken down.
- 29:30Speaker 1: Yes, if it wasn't for that convincing argument, he would
- 29:34Speaker 1: have just stayed with his son the whole time and
- 29:37Speaker 1: foregoing his own life probably yeah.
- 29:40Speaker 2: Wow.
- 29:42Speaker 1: So before he did go to the hospital for treatment, though,
- 29:45Speaker 1: Butch was able to give police a lot of information
- 29:48Speaker 1: regarding the two men. He described the vehicle that they
- 29:52Speaker 1: were driving. He told them that they had his house key, specifically,
- 29:56Speaker 1: the gun was going to be in the vehicle too,
- 29:58Speaker 1: And to top it all off, Butch said he knew
- 30:02Speaker 1: one of the men.
- 30:03Speaker 2: He knew one of the men.
- 30:05Speaker 1: Yes, Oh, but we're going to get into that detail
- 30:09Speaker 1: here in a little bit.
- 30:10Speaker 2: And they might even be at his house right now too,
- 30:14Speaker 2: exactly right if they have the key and stuff.
- 30:16Speaker 1: So they have the key, they took his money, Butch
- 30:19Speaker 1: described that, Yeah, and clearly they want more money. So
- 30:22Speaker 1: police thought the exact same thing. They're probably back at
- 30:25Speaker 1: Butcher's house right fucking now.
- 30:27Speaker 2: Well, yeah, because in their mind, both of these guys
- 30:29Speaker 2: are dead.
- 30:30Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly, so they've got all the time in the world.
- 30:32Speaker 1: They got this whole evening. Yeah, No one's going to
- 30:34Speaker 1: find you guys to.
- 30:35Speaker 2: Do a real good search of that house.
- 30:36Speaker 1: Yes, So police went to Butcher's house and waited, and
- 30:41Speaker 1: sure enough, only thirty minutes later, a white Crown Victoria
- 30:46Speaker 1: pulled up to the house.
- 30:47Speaker 2: Oh jeez.
- 30:50Speaker 1: Inside was third was forty three year old bail bondsman
- 30:54Speaker 1: Michael Caruth. So bail bondsman is basically someone who like
- 30:59Speaker 1: bail's people of jail and stuff. Michael more specifically worked
- 31:03Speaker 1: for a bail bondsman company, his wife's company, and he
- 31:08Speaker 1: was like, uh, what do they call those guys? It
- 31:10Speaker 1: didn't actually write down the title, but when he's like
- 31:13Speaker 1: out hunting people down hunter, that's what he is. So
- 31:19Speaker 1: he's a bounty hunter that works with the bonds bail
- 31:21Speaker 1: bail bondsman company. Interesting, Yeah, which explains the badge, the hats,
- 31:28Speaker 1: being able to get the car for example, all these
- 31:30Speaker 1: sort of things.
- 31:31Speaker 2: Right, Oh my gosh, that's like gross, Yeah it is. Oh,
- 31:35Speaker 2: that's really disturbed. So this guy in particular, kidding what
- 31:38Speaker 2: an asshole? Like worse than that?
- 31:40Speaker 1: Yep. Inside his car they found handcuffs, Butcher's house keys,
- 31:46Speaker 1: a narcotics officer hat who he had. Michael had blood
- 31:51Speaker 1: on his shoes and pants as well. There was no
- 31:54Speaker 1: mistaking that this was one of their suspects. But the
- 31:58Speaker 1: other suspect, where is it?
- 32:00Speaker 2: Okay? So there was just one guy in the vehicle.
- 32:02Speaker 1: Pulling up correct. So Michael was taken into custody and
- 32:06Speaker 1: questioned back at the police station. Michael was very cold
- 32:11Speaker 1: and denied any of the allegations thrown his way.
- 32:14Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, you're really in a place to deny it a.
- 32:17Speaker 1: Shit, Yeah, well as far as he knew, though there
- 32:21Speaker 1: was no witnesses to his crime. The bodies are buried,
- 32:24Speaker 1: The bodies are not ever going to be found. They
- 32:26Speaker 1: don't have evidence. Oh okay, so they don't have bodies.
- 32:29Speaker 2: The police didn't divulge that Butch was alive.
- 32:33Speaker 1: Not right away. No, No, as far as as far
- 32:36Speaker 1: as Michael concerned, if he just keeps denying it, he's
- 32:38Speaker 1: going to get away with it because they don't have bodies.
- 32:40Speaker 1: They don't have anything, right, They probably just have like
- 32:43Speaker 1: a report calling in of some noise at a house.
- 32:45Speaker 1: That's all they've got, something like that, right, So he
- 32:48Speaker 1: just denied, denied, denied, and he's like, yeah, I'm going
- 32:50Speaker 1: to get away with it. And he was just stone
- 32:53Speaker 1: cold about it, that is, until the officers played their
- 32:56Speaker 1: ace card they let Michael know that Butch was Dill alive.
- 33:02Speaker 2: He must have been freaking shocked out of his fucking mind.
- 33:07Speaker 1: Yeah, actually he was, because, reportedly, according to the officers
- 33:10Speaker 1: who were questioning him, as soon as Michael heard this,
- 33:14Speaker 1: you could see the fucking blood drain from his face
- 33:17Speaker 1: and he just got instantly pale with Yeah.
- 33:20Speaker 2: His jaw hit the freaking ground.
- 33:22Speaker 1: Yeah, whoa. So Michael, clearly, as we know it, wasn't
- 33:26Speaker 1: the only one involved with this. Butch had mentioned to
- 33:28Speaker 1: police that he recognized one of the men. Michael wasn't
- 33:32Speaker 1: one of the men.
- 33:33Speaker 2: Okay, that's good.
- 33:34Speaker 1: The other man he recognized was Jimmy Brooks Junior. So
- 33:39Speaker 1: Jimmy Brooks Junior was the son of a repoman that
- 33:43Speaker 1: Butch occasionally employed on his used car lot. So this
- 33:47Speaker 1: man would go, you know, repossess vehicles that people are
- 33:50Speaker 1: not making their payments on, right, okay, Yeah, And Jimmy
- 33:53Speaker 1: was this guy's son who worked with this guy as
- 33:57Speaker 1: a repoman occasionally on his lot. So he's met him,
- 34:00Speaker 1: he's seen him, he doesn't know him, but he recognizes him.
- 34:02Speaker 2: Right.
- 34:05Speaker 1: So it didn't even take police twelve hours before they
- 34:08Speaker 1: managed to track down Jimmy.
- 34:09Speaker 2: Okay, good.
- 34:10Speaker 1: And when they apprehended him, he was reportedly in the
- 34:13Speaker 1: process of burning his bloodied clothes from the night before.
- 34:17Speaker 2: Oh gosh, just disgusting.
- 34:20Speaker 1: Yeah. So when Jimmy was questioned, he was very much
- 34:24Speaker 1: so unlike Michael. Jimmy sang like a bird without even
- 34:30Speaker 1: being really pushed. Oh okay, No, he didn't physically sing.
- 34:35Speaker 2: He wasn't like, oh he sang, Okay, like he just
- 34:39Speaker 2: like started divulging all in for me. Yes of his crime.
- 34:43Speaker 1: Yes, he didn't actually just bust out an opera or anything.
- 34:46Speaker 2: Well, I think I kind of zoned out for a
- 34:48Speaker 2: minute and then I was like, just heard you say
- 34:50Speaker 2: he sang, and I was like, what is he singing?
- 34:53Speaker 1: Could you imagine just being questioned by police all of
- 34:56Speaker 1: a sudden, like busting out your favorite Katie Perry song
- 34:58Speaker 1: or some shit. Yeah, that'd be interesting.
- 35:01Speaker 2: That would be interesting.
- 35:02Speaker 1: I'd be like, this guy needs to go get his
- 35:05Speaker 1: mental health check. Yes, yes, but yeah, so Jimmy sang
- 35:10Speaker 1: like a bird in the meaning of spilling all the
- 35:12Speaker 1: details of what happened. He was able to tell police
- 35:16Speaker 1: not only what happened, though, but how it happened and
- 35:19Speaker 1: how it all came to be an idea of happening
- 35:23Speaker 1: in the first place. Okay, So Michael, being this bail bondsman,
- 35:30Speaker 1: would you call it again, bounty hunt, bounty hunter dude,
- 35:33Speaker 1: whatever his exact position was, managed to post bail for
- 35:38Speaker 1: Jimmy and use that against him, saying now that he
- 35:41Speaker 1: owes him the money back, and if not the money back,
- 35:44Speaker 1: then favors to help collect the money. So Jimmy's in jail,
- 35:49Speaker 1: Michael goes gets him out of jail via paying the bail,
- 35:53Speaker 1: and then's like, yeah, you owe me now.
- 35:55Speaker 2: Oh my goodness. And then did Jimmy know that Butcher
- 36:00Speaker 2: had all this money or something?
- 36:02Speaker 1: Well pretty much yes. So the end goal though, was
- 36:07Speaker 1: to collect enough money and build an underground hy hydroponic
- 36:10Speaker 1: grow up for it all. That's Michael's over arching plan here.
- 36:14Speaker 2: That's the end goal.
- 36:15Speaker 1: That's the end goal, right, motherfucker yea. And then Jimmy,
- 36:19Speaker 1: knowing that he now needs to essentially pay back all
- 36:21Speaker 1: the debt of his bail, he told Michael about this
- 36:24Speaker 1: guy that he knew who had a lot of cash
- 36:26Speaker 1: on hand aka Butch working with his dad and his lot.
- 36:29Speaker 1: He's like, oh, yeah, this guy's got lots of cash
- 36:31Speaker 1: because his business and stuff. I've seen lots of cash.
- 36:33Speaker 1: And he though I don't think he's actually seen one
- 36:36Speaker 1: hundred thousand dollars, he told Michael. He's like, I've seen
- 36:39Speaker 1: one hundred thousand dollars cash with my own eyes. Oh,
- 36:42Speaker 1: I'm pretty sure that was a bit of a white
- 36:44Speaker 1: lie there. And the one hundred thousand dollars thing. Yeah,
- 36:46Speaker 1: did know that he had lots of cash with his business?
- 36:49Speaker 2: Okay, well, yeah, because he worked really freaking hard.
- 36:52Speaker 1: Yeah, and I'm pretty sure he kept lots on hand
- 36:56Speaker 1: for like, you know, used deals or whatever, purchasing cars
- 36:59Speaker 1: that like that sort of thing. Yeah, And so that's
- 37:02Speaker 1: why he had most of his cash on hand to
- 37:04Speaker 1: deal with his business. And this guy knew it and
- 37:07Speaker 1: told Michael. He's like, yeah, this guy he should be
- 37:09Speaker 1: our target. Toe.
- 37:10Speaker 2: That's how they picked him.
- 37:11Speaker 1: That's how they picked him.
- 37:15Speaker 2: I really don't love that. That's really brutal, it is.
- 37:19Speaker 1: There was another shocking confession that came to light as
- 37:21Speaker 1: well from Jimmy. Jimmy also confessed to being involved in
- 37:25Speaker 1: another murder, oh, the double homicide of a Therma Ratliffe,
- 37:31Speaker 1: who was sixty eight and his wife, Catherine Ratliffe, who
- 37:34Speaker 1: was sixty two. Now, these two were shot and killed
- 37:38Speaker 1: in their own home before the place was ransacked for money,
- 37:41Speaker 1: and the two would flee flee from the scene on
- 37:44Speaker 1: January thirtieth, only a couple weeks before the incident with
- 37:48Speaker 1: Butch and his son.
- 37:50Speaker 2: Really, yes, and Michael was involved in that one too.
- 37:55Speaker 2: Both of them were.
- 37:55Speaker 1: Something yes, they both were.
- 37:58Speaker 2: Oh so this wasn't even their first No, it wasn't.
- 38:01Speaker 1: So there isn't a whole lot of information regarding this
- 38:03Speaker 1: case online. I'm going to tell you that right now.
- 38:06Speaker 1: But the situation does seem to be pretty much the
- 38:08Speaker 1: same as it was with Butch and his son. It
- 38:12Speaker 1: would be Jimmy and a man by the name of
- 38:15Speaker 1: James Edward Gary who was also involved, who just so
- 38:20Speaker 1: happened to also be bailed out by Michael, who now
- 38:24Speaker 1: owed Michael, you know, money.
- 38:28Speaker 2: I mean, they're all monsters, but Michael's like, really, really
- 38:32Speaker 2: really a monster.
- 38:34Speaker 1: Yes he is. So he was in the very same
- 38:37Speaker 1: situation as Jimmy was this James, And so under Michael's direction,
- 38:42Speaker 1: James and Jimmy were driven by Michael to the Ratliff's home,
- 38:48Speaker 1: from which they went in, broke in, killed the two,
- 38:51Speaker 1: stole money, and left.
- 38:53Speaker 2: Huh. So, I mean, okay, I just want to say quickly,
- 38:57Speaker 2: because they probably feel like their life is on the line,
- 39:00Speaker 2: right exactly, that might if they can't get this money
- 39:03Speaker 2: or whatever, Michael is probably going to kill them. Yep,
- 39:06Speaker 2: and they are already criminals, and yeah.
- 39:08Speaker 1: Okay, yeah, so clearly Michael has been thinking this through.
- 39:11Speaker 1: He's been planning this. So if I go and get
- 39:13Speaker 1: these guys out of jail who are criminals, and then
- 39:16Speaker 1: I make them work for me, I can get all
- 39:19Speaker 1: this and I can start my underground grow up empire.
- 39:23Speaker 1: Fuck an idiot. Yeah, but yeah, so that that's his
- 39:27Speaker 1: master plan, his puppeteering of this situation.
- 39:31Speaker 2: Huh. There's a lot to just like think through with that,
- 39:34Speaker 2: really there is.
- 39:34Speaker 1: So clearly there's no arguing this isn't premeditated, which later
- 39:39Speaker 1: on in court he would argue that it was premeditated,
- 39:41Speaker 1: but easily they were able to disprove it simply alone
- 39:45Speaker 1: by saying there's a grave pre dug Yeah, that was
- 39:48Speaker 1: the main thing. They're like, tell me it's not fucking premeditated.
- 39:51Speaker 2: Yeah, Like, shut the fuck up, you're wrong.
- 39:54Speaker 1: So it seems between that the three men they had
- 39:56Speaker 1: actually been making a list of people in the area
- 39:58Speaker 1: who they suspected work, he being large amounts of cash
- 40:01Speaker 1: on hand. The rat lifts were their first and unfortunately
- 40:04Speaker 1: Butch and his son were the second that were attacked.
- 40:07Speaker 1: So they were going to continue their spree until they
- 40:09Speaker 1: had enough money to build said grew up empire.
- 40:13Speaker 2: So I imagine. Yeah, there's other people on that list,
- 40:15Speaker 2: could you hey like that they were about to.
- 40:18Speaker 1: I don't think that list was released to the public though, Yeah, mind.
- 40:21Speaker 2: You, So they probably don't know they were on that list. Yes,
- 40:24Speaker 2: but Butch saved them.
- 40:26Speaker 1: Yeah he did.
- 40:27Speaker 2: He totally did. So.
- 40:29Speaker 1: James, however, was not involved in the incidant with Butcher
- 40:32Speaker 1: and Brett. He had a very solid alibi, pretty much
- 40:35Speaker 1: as solid as you get, because he was in jail
- 40:38Speaker 1: already on unrelated charges at the time, which is probably
- 40:42Speaker 1: why Michael himself was involved in this one.
- 40:45Speaker 2: Okay, I see.
- 40:47Speaker 1: So all this information was coming in thanks to Jimmy's confession,
- 40:52Speaker 1: though Michael continued to insist his innocence, even though he
- 40:58Speaker 1: had blood in his clothes that DNA testing showed belonged
- 41:01Speaker 1: to Butch.
- 41:02Speaker 2: Yeah, there's really no way he can get out of this.
- 41:04Speaker 1: No, there's not, like it's one hundred percent obvious. But
- 41:07Speaker 1: he maintained his innocence.
- 41:08Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 41:11Speaker 1: So because of his refusal to confess, though, his trial
- 41:14Speaker 1: was a little bit different, but the results were the same.
- 41:17Speaker 1: So Michael was convicted of four counts of capital murder
- 41:20Speaker 1: in connection with the murder of the twelve year old
- 41:23Speaker 1: named Brett Boyer and was convicted of attempted murder, robbery
- 41:29Speaker 1: and the first robbery in the first degree, and burglary
- 41:32Speaker 1: in the first degree with respect to Butcher Boyer. Okay, so,
- 41:37Speaker 1: the jury unanimously recommended that Michael be sentenced to death,
- 41:42Speaker 1: and the judge obliged so in two thousand and three,
- 41:46Speaker 1: he was sentenced to death. Jimmy Brooks, who admitted to
- 41:50Speaker 1: the crimes and everything and sang like a bird ye,
- 41:53Speaker 1: was also sentenced to death a year later in two
- 41:56Speaker 1: thousand and four. Oh, okay, both of the men are
- 42:00Speaker 1: still on death row right now in Alabama, waiting their
- 42:03Speaker 1: day that they hear the belt told. So Gary, who
- 42:07Speaker 1: was an accomplice in the other murders, was found guilty
- 42:09Speaker 1: in two thousand and five and sentenced to life without parole. Okay, Luckily,
- 42:16Speaker 1: Butch would undergo intense surgery on his neck and ultimately
- 42:19Speaker 1: survive the ordeal. WHOA, yes, But as you said, thanks
- 42:24Speaker 1: to his actions, his son's killers were brought to justice,
- 42:28Speaker 1: and of course who knows how many others were saved
- 42:31Speaker 1: from being killed and becoming the next victims. Oh?
- 42:34Speaker 2: Absolutely, I think he probably saved tons of lives probably Wow,
- 42:38Speaker 2: But I mean as awesome as that must feel. And
- 42:41Speaker 2: like he still lost his son though, the poor guy
- 42:45Speaker 2: like he did.
- 42:46Speaker 1: But that man is a fucking hero. Well yeah, like
- 42:50Speaker 1: there's no short answer about that.
- 42:52Speaker 2: No, And I also feel like he's probably just like
- 42:54Speaker 2: so tough and hopefully I don't know if anyone can
- 42:59Speaker 2: make any good of something so terrible happening, it feels
- 43:01Speaker 2: like it could be him.
- 43:03Speaker 1: Yeah. I just can't imagine pretending to have to be dead,
- 43:09Speaker 1: thrown in a grave with your deceased child, and then
- 43:13Speaker 1: digging yourself out and proceeding to get these two apprehended
- 43:18Speaker 1: and never leaving your child's side like the entire time,
- 43:22Speaker 1: basically being forced to go get medical attention.
- 43:25Speaker 2: Yeah, the fact that he lived is just it's a miracle. Really. Yeah,
- 43:31Speaker 2: Like I have no idea how because like, isn't there's
- 43:33Speaker 2: like arteries and stuff in the neck, right, there's arteries
- 43:36Speaker 2: yet that when you cut that, don't you lose like
- 43:38Speaker 2: a punt of blood? And I imagine that they would have,
- 43:42Speaker 2: you know, nicked one of those.
- 43:43Speaker 1: Yeah, And to quote the description from the officers and
- 43:48Speaker 1: the first responders on scene, his neck was cut from
- 43:51Speaker 1: ear to.
- 43:52Speaker 2: Ear, so like they would have gone through an artery, wouldn't.
- 43:56Speaker 1: They are they should have, I at least somewhat. I
- 43:59Speaker 1: don't know exactly.
- 44:01Speaker 2: Yeah, Like the fact that he lived is.
- 44:03Speaker 1: Just your arteries are right fucking there. Well yeah, either
- 44:05Speaker 1: side of your throat, you can feel.
- 44:06Speaker 2: Them, and and they're not like that deep. So it
- 44:10Speaker 2: just it's honestly amazing to me that he lived.
- 44:13Speaker 1: Yeah, it's it's mind.
- 44:15Speaker 2: Blowing, it is. But I mean, yeah, I'm like so
- 44:18Speaker 2: thankful that he did because yeah, this who knows what
- 44:21Speaker 2: they would have ended up doing.
- 44:23Speaker 1: Yeah, he was able to get these two behind bars
- 44:28Speaker 1: for his son. Yeah, he's able to get that retribution.
- 44:31Speaker 2: If you will at least, Yeah, which is good. Yeah,
- 44:34Speaker 2: that could be a little bit helpful. So I'm about
- 44:37Speaker 2: to sneeze again.
- 44:37Speaker 1: I feel like, do it if you need to, But
- 44:41Speaker 1: I do want to point out, like the whole idea
- 44:43Speaker 1: of things aren't always what they've seen at the very
- 44:45Speaker 1: beginning of this that I talked about. So Butch was
- 44:48Speaker 1: fooled with them, and they're just their officer disguised. But however,
- 44:52Speaker 1: Butch flipped the entire table on them, and he fooled
- 44:55Speaker 1: them with thinking that he was dead when he wasn't. Yeah,
- 44:59Speaker 1: so he pulled I mean not the same, but he
- 45:02Speaker 1: pulled the wool over their eyes, just as they did him.
- 45:05Speaker 1: And because of that he survived. And because of that,
- 45:08Speaker 1: these guys are behind bars.
- 45:09Speaker 2: Yeah, yep. I wonder if at any point that he
- 45:12Speaker 2: ever like divulged that he he knew Jimmy. Hey, I'm
- 45:18Speaker 2: kiss curious of that.
- 45:19Speaker 1: So I did look into some of the documents as
- 45:22Speaker 1: best I could, and he he said in the vehicle
- 45:25Speaker 1: he recognized Jimmy, but didn't it didn't let on. I
- 45:32Speaker 1: wasn't sure if Butch didn't let on that he recognized
- 45:36Speaker 1: Jimmy or Jimmy didn't let on that. Yeah, Butch, you
- 45:39Speaker 1: do recognize me. I am that guy. I couldn't clarify
- 45:43Speaker 1: between witch's witch. Yeah, I'm assuming Butch himself didn't let
- 45:48Speaker 1: on that he recognized Jimmy.
- 45:49Speaker 2: Yeah, probably because he seems like he kind of I mean,
- 45:53Speaker 2: even in just complete disasters, like kind of like think
- 45:56Speaker 2: sings through a little bit, right.
- 45:58Speaker 1: But there is one of two ways it plays out.
- 46:01Speaker 1: Either he did recognize him and didn't speak up, or
- 46:03Speaker 1: the other way, he's like, hey, I recognize you. And
- 46:05Speaker 1: Jimmy was like, no, you don't. Yeah, those are the
- 46:08Speaker 1: two options.
- 46:09Speaker 2: Are you're you're mistaken?
- 46:10Speaker 1: Yeah, but he didn't lead on is exactly how it
- 46:14Speaker 1: was worded in the court documents. Oh yeah, take that
- 46:19Speaker 1: and figure that one out. I don't know. I couldn't.
- 46:21Speaker 1: I couldn't make heads of tails of it. I'm assuming that, Yeah,
- 46:25Speaker 1: Brett orbitorry Butch was just like keeping his lip sealed.
- 46:28Speaker 2: And you watch that video then, oh yeah, wow yeah
- 46:32Speaker 2: huh And what is like Butch like a is he
- 46:35Speaker 2: like a bigger guy like kind?
- 46:38Speaker 1: I mean it's kind of hard to tell from the
- 46:40Speaker 1: Dashkam footage. Yeah, per se. But and especially considering I
- 46:43Speaker 1: wasn't paying attention to how big Butch was. I was
- 46:45Speaker 1: more like, holy shit.
- 46:47Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm just curious, like what he what?
- 46:50Speaker 1: As far as I could tell, he's probably just like
- 46:52Speaker 1: your average guy, average build sort of thing.
- 46:54Speaker 2: Okay, h interesting, geez.
- 46:58Speaker 1: What a fucking hero though, man.
- 47:00Speaker 2: A superhero yeah, but also just a super shitty case
- 47:04Speaker 2: and story too.
- 47:06Speaker 1: Being targeted all because you just you know, work hard.
- 47:09Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, and the wrong person found out?
- 47:13Speaker 1: I guess yep.
- 47:15Speaker 2: Jeez. I mean a lot of things had to line
- 47:18Speaker 2: up for that to happen, really, but.
- 47:21Speaker 1: But even still like, it's the wrong person who found
- 47:24Speaker 1: out it got to Michael, and Michael was going to
- 47:28Speaker 1: do this to someone else though too. If it wasn't
- 47:30Speaker 1: Butcher and Brett, he was going to do it to
- 47:32Speaker 1: someone else. Yep. It just so happened that he did
- 47:34Speaker 1: it to Butcher, and Butch was the man who was
- 47:36Speaker 1: able to fucking stop him in his tracks. Yep, it
- 47:38Speaker 1: cost but Butch was able to stop him.
- 47:42Speaker 2: Yeah. I hope that brings him a little bit of peace. Yeah,
- 47:45Speaker 2: because that what he did is it's unbelievable. It's amazing.
- 47:49Speaker 1: Yea. So he is definitely our badass of the day.
- 47:53Speaker 1: Is the story of Butch and Brett Boyer.
- 47:57Speaker 2: Wow, what a story.
- 47:58Speaker 1: Hopefully you guys enjoyed this one. I definitely thought it
