- 0:00Welcome to another episode of Morning Medical with Dr.
- 0:02Chow.
- 0:03I'm Dr.
- 0:03Chi-Ming Chow, here to provide you with the latest updates on medical and health news from
- 0:08around the world.
- 0:09Today, we're diving into an intriguing story about four Canadians who have found themselves
- 0:15in a unique medical situation.
- 0:17They've just returned home from a cruise ship that was hit by an outbreak of hantavirus.
- 0:22This has drawn attention from health officials and the public alike, as they navigate this
- 0:27critical period.
- 0:31British Columbia's top doctor has provided some insights into the situation, emphasizing that
- 0:36while these individuals are in a "critical period," they are not currently considered
- 0:40infected.
- 0:42Dr.
- 0:43Bonnie Henry, the province's health officer, has clarified that the four passengers are
- 0:48being monitored closely during a minimum isolation period of 21 days.
- 0:54This is due to the incubation period of the virus, which can be as long as six weeks.
- 1:00The median incubation tends to be around 15 to 18 days, so we're in a time frame where more
- 1:06cases could potentially arise.
- 1:10These four individuals were aboard the MV Hondius when the outbreak began.
- 1:14The ship had reported eight cases and, unfortunately, three deaths due to the
- 1:19hantavirus.
- 1:21While these Canadians have been exposed to the virus, they have not shown any symptoms.
- 1:26Dr.
- 1:26Henry mentioned that they are being treated as contacts rather than patients, with the hope
- 1:32that none of them will develop the disease.
- 1:34The incubation period is a waiting game, extending up to six weeks after exposure to
- 1:40ensure no infection has occurred.
- 1:43The passengers were on a flight from Tenerife, Spain, to Bagotville, Quebec, and then on to an
- 1:48undisclosed location in British Columbia.
- 1:51They wore protective gear during their journey and will undergo a health assessment by local
- 1:56public health officials upon arrival.
- 1:59This process ensures they remain isolated from the public throughout their return and
- 2:04isolation period.
- 2:06It's part of a detailed plan to prevent any potential spread of the virus.
- 2:11The virus in question, the Andes virus, is particularly notable because it is the only
- 2:16hantavirus strain known to spread from human to human, albeit not very easily.
- 2:22Dr.
- 2:23Henry reassured the public that this virus does not transmit in the same way as more contagious
- 2:28viruses, like COVID-19.
- 2:30The hantavirus tends to cause infections deep in the lungs and can lead to kidney failure.
- 2:36Transmission requires very close contact, and even then, person-to-person spread is rare.
- 2:43In other news, actor and musician Billy Bob Thornton has been in the spotlight recently not
- 2:49just for his work, but for his rather unusual choice of snack, which he claims has been
- 2:54helping him deal with certain health issues.
- 2:58Thornton, known for his roles in films like "Sling Blade" and "Bad Santa," has opened up
- 3:03about his health challenges and how he's been managing them.
- 3:08Thornton has revealed that his go-to snack is a rather bizarre combination: a mix of pickles,
- 3:13peanut butter, and hot sauce.
- 3:15While this might raise a few eyebrows, Thornton insists that this peculiar blend has become a
- 3:20staple in his diet, attributing it to alleviating some of his health concerns.
- 3:25Although he hasn't specified exactly what these health issues are, the actor has shared that
- 3:29the snack helps him feel more energized and balanced.
- 3:33It's important to note that while this snack may work for Thornton, it's not necessarily a
- 3:38recommended dietary choice for everyone.
- 3:42The combination of these ingredients might not align with general nutritional guidelines, and
- 3:47anyone considering similar dietary changes should consult with a healthcare professional.
- 3:52However, Thornton's story does highlight how personal and unique dietary preferences can be,
- 3:58especially when dealing with specific health conditions.
- 4:02This revelation from Thornton has sparked a conversation about the various ways individuals
- 4:07manage their health, particularly with unconventional methods.
- 4:12It underscores the fact that health and wellness can be highly personalized, and what
- 4:16works for one person may not work for another.
- 4:20As always, it's crucial to approach such stories with a critical eye and seek
- 4:25professional advice when making significant changes to one's diet or lifestyle.
- 4:32The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has issued a stark warning regarding the
- 4:37hantavirus following a recent health alert.
- 4:40This comes in the wake of the hantavirus outbreak on the MV Hondius cruise ship, which
- 4:45has resulted in several cases and deaths.
- 4:49The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is urging the public to be vigilant and
- 4:53informed about the potential risks associated with the virus.
- 4:58The hantavirus, while not as commonly discussed as other infectious diseases, poses a
- 5:03significant health risk, particularly because certain strains, like the Andes virus, can
- 5:09spread from person to person.
- 5:11This is in contrast to most hantavirus strains, which typically spread through contact with
- 5:16infected rodents or their droppings.
- 5:19The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention emphasizes that transmission among humans is
- 5:24rare and requires close contact, but it is crucial to be aware of the symptoms and seek
- 5:30medical attention if needed.
- 5:33Symptoms of hantavirus can include fever, muscle aches, and fatigue, which can progress
- 5:38to more severe respiratory issues.
- 5:41The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises that anyone who has been in areas with
- 5:46known rodent infestations or has been exposed to environments where the virus is present
- 5:52should be particularly cautious.
- 5:54Early detection and medical intervention are key to managing the disease effectively.
- 6:01The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is working closely with international health
- 6:05organizations to monitor the situation and provide guidance on preventing further spread.
- 6:11Public health officials are reinforcing the importance of taking preventive measures, such
- 6:17as ensuring homes and workplaces are rodent-free and using protective gear when
- 6:22cleaning areas that may have been contaminated by rodents.
- 6:26This statement from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention serves as a reminder of
- 6:30the importance of global health vigilance and the need for continued public education on
- 6:35infectious diseases.
- 6:37As the situation develops, staying informed through reliable sources is essential for both
- 6:42public safety and individual health.
- 6:46Let's delve into the topic of hantavirus and how it spreads.
- 6:50Recently, a cruise ship known as the MV Hondius was hit by an outbreak of hantavirus.
- 6:57The ship has docked in the Canary Islands, and there have been three confirmed cases of the
- 7:02virus, along with five suspected cases.
- 7:05These cases include a Dutch woman who unfortunately passed away, a British passenger
- 7:10currently in intensive care in South Africa, and a Swiss passenger receiving treatment in
- 7:15Zurich.
- 7:17Among the suspected cases are a British man, a Dutch crew member, and a German national.
- 7:23Despite the suspicion, none of these individuals have tested positive for hantavirus
- 7:28yet, although two have shown symptoms.
- 7:32The hantavirus family comprises over twenty different viral species, primarily transmitted
- 7:37through contact with infected rodents, such as rats and mice.
- 7:41This typically occurs via exposure to dried urine and droppings.
- 7:45However, one strain, the Andes virus, is known for its ability to spread from person to
- 7:51person, though this is quite rare.
- 7:55The Andes virus has been confirmed in two passengers from the MV Hondius – the British
- 8:00man in Johannesburg and the Dutch woman who succumbed to the disease.
- 8:04The virus is mostly found in Argentina and Chile, and there was a notable outbreak in
- 8:10Argentina in late 2018, where a single individual unwittingly spread the virus to 34
- 8:16others, resulting in 11 deaths.
- 8:20The World Health Organization is now operating under the assumption that the virus could
- 8:24potentially be spreading through very close contact among people on the ship, in addition
- 8:29to contact with rodents.
- 8:32As a result, passengers still aboard the ship are being confined to their cabins to limit
- 8:37exposure.
- 8:38British nationals returning to the UK will be required to self-isolate.
- 8:42Measures such as isolating infected patients, regular handwashing, tracing and monitoring
- 8:48close contacts, and applying infection control measures are being emphasized to halt the
- 8:52spread of the disease.
- 8:54Understanding how hantavirus spreads is crucial.
- 8:58It generally spreads when people come into close contact with droppings, urine, and saliva
- 9:04from rodents.
- 9:05Inhalation of the virus can occur when rodent excreta are stirred up into the air.
- 9:11Rarely, the virus can also be transmitted through a rodent bite.
- 9:15The Andes strain, the only one known to spread between humans, requires very close and
- 9:21prolonged contact with someone showing symptoms.
- 9:24This is different from the flu, which spreads through droplets from coughing or sneezing.
- 9:30Hantavirus can lead to two severe illnesses.
- 9:33The first is Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome, which initially presents with fatigue, fever,
- 9:39and muscle aches, and can progress to severe respiratory issues.
- 9:43This syndrome, associated with the Andes strain, has a mortality rate of 20 to 40
- 9:48percent.
- 9:49The incubation period ranges from one to eight weeks.
- 9:52The second illness, Haemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome, can start with flu-like
- 9:58symptoms and progress to kidney involvement, low blood pressure, and internal bleeding.
- 10:03Unfortunately, there is no specific treatment for hantavirus infections at present.
- 10:09However, early medical intervention can improve survival rates.
- 10:13Treatments may include oxygen therapy, mechanical ventilation, and dialysis.
- 10:19In severe cases, hospitalization in intensive care units is necessary.
- 10:25Currently, there are no widely available vaccines for hantavirus, although some are
- 10:30utilized in China and South Korea against local strains.
- 10:35Globally, there are an estimated 150,000 cases of Haemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome each
- 10:42year, primarily occurring in Europe and Asia.
- 10:46More than half of these cases are reported in China.
- 10:49In the United States, data from 1993 to 2023 indicates 890 cases of hantavirus, with the
- 10:58most common strain being Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome.
- 11:02The recent death of Betsy Arakawa, wife of actor Gene Hackman, was linked to hantavirus,
- 11:08highlighting the ongoing risk and the need for vigilance.
- 11:13Passengers who were stuck on a cruise ship at the center of a deadly hantavirus outbreak have
- 11:17now disembarked and are on a plane making their way back to Canada.
- 11:22These passengers took all necessary precautions as they ascended the stairs onto the aircraft,
- 11:28wearing protective gear to ensure their safety and the safety of others.
- 11:33The plane is headed for the Saguenay-Bagotville Airport, which is approximately two hours
- 11:38outside of Quebec City.
- 11:40The cruise ship, MV Hondius, owned by Oceanwide Expeditions, had about 130 asymptomatic
- 11:46passengers, including four Canadians, when it docked this morning.
- 11:51Health authorities, including representatives from the World Health Organization, were
- 11:56present at the port to screen all passengers before they boarded the plane.
- 12:00This screening is part of the stringent measures in place to prevent the spread of the
- 12:05virus, especially considering the virus's potential to transmit from person to person,
- 12:10albeit rarely.
- 12:11There were eight confirmed cases of hantavirus on the ship, resulting in three fatalities.
- 12:18The strain involved, the Andes virus, is particularly concerning due to its capability
- 12:24of human-to-human transmission, although it is not highly contagious.
- 12:29The Canadian government has advised several individuals to self-isolate after they came
- 12:34into contact with infected passengers.
- 12:37This includes a couple from the Grey Bruce region of Ontario, who disembarked from the
- 12:42ship in late April before the outbreak was officially declared.
- 12:46Thankfully, they have not exhibited any symptoms.
- 12:50Moreover, four other Canadians from Quebec, Alberta, and Ontario, who were not on the ship,
- 12:56may have been exposed to the virus while flying and have been advised to monitor their health
- 13:01closely.
- 13:03The arrival of these passengers in Canada is being handled with utmost care.
- 13:09Authorities are ensuring that all necessary protocols are followed to safeguard public
- 13:13health.
- 13:15The situation underscores the importance of international cooperation in managing
- 13:20infectious disease outbreaks, as well as the need for robust public health measures to
- 13:26prevent the spread of such viruses.
- 13:28The public is reminded to stay informed through credible sources and to adhere to health
- 13:33guidelines, especially when dealing with potential exposure to infectious diseases.
- 13:40Our final segment today shifts focus to the world of culinary arts and nutrition, as we
- 13:44explore insights from celebrity chef Rocco DiSpirito.
- 13:48Known for his health-conscious approach to cooking, DiSpirito has recently shared his
- 13:53thoughts on the common pitfalls people encounter when attempting to lose weight.
- 13:57His perspective offers a refreshing take on the intricacies of diet management and weight loss
- 14:03strategies.
- 14:05According to DiSpirito, one of the biggest mistakes people make is what he refers to as
- 14:10"fuzzy math" when it comes to calorie consumption.
- 14:14Many individuals underestimate the amount of food they consume on a daily basis, often
- 14:18eating two to three times more than they realize.
- 14:22This miscalculation can significantly hinder weight loss efforts, as even small bites here
- 14:27and there add up quickly.
- 14:30DiSpirito emphasizes the importance of understanding one's own dietary needs and
- 14:35tailoring weight loss strategies to address specific issues, whether it be body
- 14:39composition, exercise habits, or dietary choices.
- 14:43He advises starting with the basics: reducing sugar, alcohol, and processed foods, and
- 14:49increasing protein intake.
- 14:52While this sounds straightforward, DiSpirito reminds us that achieving a balanced diet
- 14:56requires awareness and diligence.
- 15:00The chef also highlights a cultural aspect of healthy eating, noting that in countries like
- 15:05Italy, where the food supply is less tampered with, indulgence and health can coexist more
- 15:10harmoniously.
- 15:11He contrasts this with the United States, where genetically modified and heavily processed
- 15:16foods are more common, making it challenging to find that balance.
- 15:21DiSpirito's insights serve as a reminder that healthy eating is not just about restricting
- 15:27calories or following trends, but about understanding the quality of food and being
- 15:32mindful of consumption.
- 15:34As the healthy eating movement continues to grow across the United States, his approach
- 15:39underscores the need for both personal responsibility and systemic change in how food
- 15:45is produced and consumed.
- 15:48As we wrap up today's episode, remember that staying informed and making mindful choices are
- 15:53key to maintaining good health.
- 15:55Whether it's understanding the spread of infectious diseases like hantavirus or
- 15:59navigating personal dietary challenges, knowledge is an essential tool.
- 16:04Thank you for joining me today on Morning Medical with Dr.
- 16:07Chow.
- 16:08Stay well, and I'll see you next time for more health updates.
