- 2:38Speaker 1: Before we go there, just real quick. So for those
- 2:43Speaker 1: who don't know, I have a book that I wrote
- 2:46Speaker 1: years ago about my experience and hip hop, is called
- 2:49Speaker 1: Experience hip Hop. Each chapter deals with a classic hip
- 2:53Speaker 1: hop album, my memory of buying the album, my thoughts,
- 2:59Speaker 1: how I got the album, where I was in my life,
- 3:02Speaker 1: when the album dropped, and I go over a number
- 3:05Speaker 1: of classics. We are now on the fourth chapter of
- 3:08Speaker 1: the book, which features a tribe called questis the low
- 3:13Speaker 1: End Theory one of my favorite groups of all time,
- 3:18Speaker 1: or my favorite group of all time, but also probably
- 3:21Speaker 1: my favorite album from them. Not going to debate the
- 3:24Speaker 1: Midnight Maradas low end theory, because we can go back
- 3:27Speaker 1: and forth. They're good reasons on both sides. But this
- 3:30Speaker 1: chapter it's about the low End Theory because it was
- 3:33Speaker 1: the album that had the biggest impact on me becoming
- 3:37Speaker 1: a fan of that group at the time. So if
- 3:41Speaker 1: you would like to read that chapter of the book
- 3:44Speaker 1: the links in the description of this episode, subscribe to
- 3:48Speaker 1: the sub stack to stay locked into the next chapter
- 3:52Speaker 1: that'll be coming, probably towards the end of August sometimes,
- 3:58Speaker 1: so let me know what you think. Check it out.
- 4:02Speaker 1: I enjoyed writing it. I enjoyed revisiting, Like I mean, honestly,
- 4:07Speaker 1: I might have wrote this thing almost ten years ago.
- 4:10Speaker 1: I can't believe that, but I polished it up. It's
- 4:15Speaker 1: presented to you. Other chapters include Nazi zel Matic, slick Ricks,
- 4:20Speaker 1: The Greatest Great Adventures of slick Rick, Ice Cube's Death,
- 4:24Speaker 1: certificate of course, and more to come, so stay locked
- 4:28Speaker 1: in for that now. Big shout out to hip hopdx
- 4:33Speaker 1: dot com, TheSource magazine dot com sometimes Yeah Cool djbooth
- 4:39Speaker 1: dot net, and a couple of places where I'm getting
- 4:41Speaker 1: some of these stories from listening right to the business stuff.
- 4:47Speaker 1: So it's been a while, but not that long, maybe
- 4:51Speaker 1: last year since we heard Westside Gun talking about a
- 4:56Speaker 1: new project. Right. He had least I think two projects
- 5:01Speaker 1: last year which were cool, not the best in my opinion,
- 5:06Speaker 1: but they were cool for what they were. And then
- 5:10Speaker 1: he had a death in his family that really impacted him,
- 5:13Speaker 1: so he kind of became a little bit more low
- 5:16Speaker 1: key online. I mean, if you watch wrestling, you still
- 5:19Speaker 1: saw him at wrestling events and you would see him
- 5:22Speaker 1: tweeting Instagram here and there, but not with any of
- 5:27Speaker 1: the energy that he was doing prior to this loss
- 5:30Speaker 1: and his family. But now he's back and he has
- 5:35Speaker 1: officially announced Fly God is an Awesome God Part three,
- 5:40Speaker 1: completing the trilogy where the first one I'm not even
- 5:45Speaker 1: gonna hold you. I know, Supreme Blind tell is what
- 5:48Speaker 1: people love and that's the classic, but I think for
- 5:52Speaker 1: me I love that one too. Don't get it twisted,
- 5:56Speaker 1: but I think for me, Fly God is an awesome god,
- 6:00Speaker 1: but the first one is just as great. It's like,
- 6:04Speaker 1: if we had to give Westside Gun classics, I think
- 6:07Speaker 1: that one's a classic. Also, Part two was a little
- 6:11Speaker 1: disappointing because my expectations were so high because I loved
- 6:14Speaker 1: the first one so much that, you know, the second
- 6:18Speaker 1: one kind of didn't fulfill those expectations for me. But
- 6:24Speaker 1: this is the third one, he seems to have like
- 6:28Speaker 1: a lot of energy, a lot of hope, you know.
- 6:32Speaker 1: So I'm guessing I think the break from how he
- 6:37Speaker 1: would post on social media and coming up out of
- 6:41Speaker 1: this sad situation energized may help this project be dope
- 6:47Speaker 1: or be better than ever, because honestly, the last couple
- 6:50Speaker 1: of releases from Westside Gun have been hit or miss
- 6:54Speaker 1: for me, right, Like, sometimes he'll drop something where I'm like, yeah,
- 6:57Speaker 1: there was a lot of hype behind this from him
- 7:00Speaker 1: mostly and it just wasn't that, And then he'll release
- 7:04Speaker 1: something that honestly doesn't have the same amount of hype,
- 7:08Speaker 1: but yet it's better. So I'm just hoping for the best.
- 7:13Speaker 1: Let's see, this is coming from hip hop d well,
- 7:16Speaker 1: actually this is coming from Westside Guns Twitter. He said
- 7:20Speaker 1: this Fly God is an awesome God three trilogy. The
- 7:25Speaker 1: album is crazy. I had to bring the mask back
- 7:29Speaker 1: out because this is too raw and dusty. I know
- 7:33Speaker 1: the game missed me, even though my kid's been doing
- 7:36Speaker 1: a great job with entertaining your father's back home. Right.
- 7:40Speaker 1: So the album cover is him with the masks. I
- 7:43Speaker 1: think he gotta pulletproof vests on and all of that,
- 7:47Speaker 1: which is cool, But I'm just I'm just gonna say
- 7:51Speaker 1: this man like the mass is a part of his aesthetic.
- 7:54Speaker 1: He got plenty of albums with the mask on, right,
- 7:57Speaker 1: including Supreme Blind Town. So to me, it doesn't signal
- 8:04Speaker 1: this is a you know, the third and the trilogy
- 8:06Speaker 1: to an album that kind of had that static. He's
- 8:09Speaker 1: really so many projects with that. What I liked a
- 8:12Speaker 1: lot about the first one was because it was artwork right.
- 8:17Speaker 1: It was a picture of him with a mask on,
- 8:19Speaker 1: bent down on his knees, you know, like like not
- 8:22Speaker 1: bent down on his knees, but bent down like but
- 8:25Speaker 1: I gotta say pauls for that whatever, bent down and
- 8:28Speaker 1: they turned that into like artwork, right. I would prefer
- 8:33Speaker 1: if they take this and do that, because that was
- 8:36Speaker 1: a part of the mostique. It's kind of like the
- 8:38Speaker 1: one album I love that I'm the only one that
- 8:41Speaker 1: probably listens to at least twice a year, Do Rag Dynasty, Right,
- 8:45Speaker 1: It's something about the name do Rag Dynasty to cover
- 8:50Speaker 1: with the Lakers back in the eighties winning the championship,
- 8:54Speaker 1: but they put do Rags on everybody from Magic Johnson,
- 8:57Speaker 1: the Kareem aldu Jabbar pat Riley, and then the music
- 9:03Speaker 1: that matched the esthetic. Now I'm not saying this doesen't,
- 9:08Speaker 1: but I think for this trilogy specifically how it began
- 9:13Speaker 1: with the music, the Ray Kwan intro with the cover,
- 9:17Speaker 1: it just was dope, and the third one kind of
- 9:20Speaker 1: missed all of what was dope about the first one.
- 9:23Speaker 1: So I'm hopeful he's always going to say the music's crazy,
- 9:28Speaker 1: because that's just what he says half the time. But
- 9:31Speaker 1: we shall see once it drops. Common recently in an
- 9:38Speaker 1: interview listed what he thinks or at least his mount
- 9:44Speaker 1: Rushmore for Chicago. Right. He was on ten to seventy
- 9:52Speaker 1: five WGCI in Chicago, and he was talking about his
- 9:57Speaker 1: new album with Pete Rock, The Auditorium Volume One, which
- 10:00Speaker 1: is pretty dope if you're a hip hopad and you
- 10:02Speaker 1: haven't heard that one. I don't know what you're doing.
- 10:05Speaker 1: But they went on to talk about you know, rappers
- 10:11Speaker 1: and you know who's the best in Chicago and top
- 10:15Speaker 1: five's in Mount Rushmore and he went on to say
- 10:21Speaker 1: this about some of his favorite rappers, and I quote, well,
- 10:25Speaker 1: Kanye is going on there for sure. I'm gonna put
- 10:28Speaker 1: Loop a Fiasco in there. Twister is bad, but let
- 10:31Speaker 1: me see it's tough. Let me see, I'm gonna put
- 10:37Speaker 1: Dirk up there because Dirk is doing what he do.
- 10:40Speaker 1: And then man, I think I'm excluding myself because I
- 10:44Speaker 1: would be up there, but I might have to go
- 10:47Speaker 1: with Chance the rapper at that point. And some people
- 10:52Speaker 1: push back because he didn't include Chief Keys, who else?
- 10:58Speaker 1: And he shot out other rappers like ge Herbro or
- 11:01Speaker 1: Lil Reese. Now what I what do I feel? Right?
- 11:08Speaker 1: I know y'all didn't ask what I'm going to tell
- 11:11Speaker 1: you anyway, Mount Rushmore? Right, So Mount Rushmore is four.
- 11:17Speaker 1: I think let's see where he added one, two, three
- 11:21Speaker 1: or five? So five, so it's like a top five
- 11:24Speaker 1: Mount Rushmore. I think this is pretty simple, to be honest,
- 11:29Speaker 1: and it ain't really about popularity. It's about body or work, longevity,
- 11:35Speaker 1: things of that nature, to be honest. So I agree
- 11:39Speaker 1: Common should be on that Mount Rushmore. Kanye should be
- 11:43Speaker 1: on that Mount Rushmore. Twister definitely should be on that
- 11:48Speaker 1: Mount Rushmore. I think loop A should also be on
- 11:52Speaker 1: that Mount Rushmore. When you look at Loope's catalog, I
- 11:56Speaker 1: don't know. If you haven't heard of loupe Fiasco song
- 11:59Speaker 1: since Kick Push, you're missing out on a lot of
- 12:02Speaker 1: dope hip hop. He deserves to be on that as
- 12:05Speaker 1: far as like dudes that are nice from there and
- 12:09Speaker 1: that fifth spot, I don't know if I would give
- 12:11Speaker 1: it to Chance because even though I like Chance the rapper,
- 12:14Speaker 1: and I even like the album that nobody liked after
- 12:19Speaker 1: his debut, but I don't think he's had that much
- 12:24Speaker 1: of an impact beyond that, right, he hasn't really released
- 12:27Speaker 1: a lot of music since then, and it's tough to
- 12:32Speaker 1: just put him on a Mount Rushmore. I think in
- 12:35Speaker 1: a lot of ways, gotta be Chief Keith. I'm saying now,
- 12:42Speaker 1: I'm not a fan of Chief Keith, and it's not
- 12:44Speaker 1: really about young versus old or anything of that nature.
- 12:48Speaker 1: Is just really more about what I like personally in
- 12:54Speaker 1: music and how I can get into it. But I
- 12:57Speaker 1: think what can't be denied about Chief is he inspired
- 13:03Speaker 1: a movement for a young generation as far as the
- 13:07Speaker 1: rappers that followed in his footsteps. Like, I can't say
- 13:12Speaker 1: Dirk is bigger than Chief Keith when it comes to
- 13:15Speaker 1: impact overall, because I think Chief Keith was the guy's
- 13:20Speaker 1: who set the bar right, same thing with Lil Reese
- 13:23Speaker 1: and all the mother cats you want to add, So
- 13:26Speaker 1: I would, I would say that and that represents Chicago
- 13:31Speaker 1: drill in a lot of ways. Trap or whatever probably
- 13:35Speaker 1: drill more than anything. But when you look at those
- 13:38Speaker 1: five by name, you know there's a lot of skill,
- 13:40Speaker 1: there's a lot of influence, there's a lot of style.
- 13:43Speaker 1: I just think, what uh, As a person who's not
- 13:49Speaker 1: from Chicago and really only knows those artists that are
- 13:53Speaker 1: huge coming out of Chicago, there's probably somebody who also
- 13:58Speaker 1: deserves to be on that mount more that I'm just
- 14:01Speaker 1: not aware of. So if you know, leave your comments
- 14:05Speaker 1: in a comments section below. But I'll take the opportunity
- 14:08Speaker 1: since we talk in Chicago rappers, to shout out I
- 14:11Speaker 1: Am God. If you've never heard of I Am God
- 14:15Speaker 1: and you love hip hop, and you love bars specifically,
- 14:19Speaker 1: you got you gotta listen to this dudes more than once.
- 14:23Speaker 1: He's been a part of my Best of the Year right,
- 14:27Speaker 1: He's been on my playlist for the Best of the
- 14:31Speaker 1: Year for several years now and he will continue to
- 14:34Speaker 1: be this year because he put out what three projects
- 14:37Speaker 1: and all of them was fired with clip though. So
- 14:41Speaker 1: that's a guy you need to check out. Because when
- 14:43Speaker 1: you talk about today and you may not like a
- 14:47Speaker 1: lot of the Chicago rappers today like a Dirk or
- 14:51Speaker 1: Chief Keef or Lil Reese or whatever, and you just
- 14:54Speaker 1: really want the bars, but you know you're not. You're
- 14:57Speaker 1: off common, you off loop A check out. I am God,
- 15:02Speaker 1: dude is dumb nice and lastly, so I am' gonna
- 15:10Speaker 1: hold y'all man, if you don't know. Rokim has recently
- 15:19Speaker 1: released a brand new album after more than a decade,
- 15:23Speaker 1: I believe or close to it one or the other
- 15:30Speaker 1: called God's Network Rebirth. This album recently released contained seven songs,
- 15:39Speaker 1: clocking in at thirty two minutes. Most of the production,
- 15:43Speaker 1: if not all the production, I think all the production
- 15:47Speaker 1: is done by rock Him. The one thing that caught
- 15:50Speaker 1: most people's eyes, as they say Oh, the God is back.
- 15:53Speaker 1: The God is back is the fact that God is
- 15:56Speaker 1: back with one hundred thousand features kidding, I'm not kidding.
- 16:03Speaker 1: Features include and I'm gonna just go through a couple
- 16:06Speaker 1: of them, Corrupt, Master, Killa, Beg, Huss Kingpin, Nipsey Hustle,
- 16:11Speaker 1: Planet Asia, Snoop Dogg, even though you're not really rapping,
- 16:15Speaker 1: Fred to God's Son, sky Zoo thirty eight, Special, Crooked Cannabis,
- 16:20Speaker 1: Chino exl Try State, Joel Ortiz, Kuji Rap, method Man, Prodigy,
- 16:28Speaker 1: and the list goes on. Now, not everybody has a verse,
- 16:31Speaker 1: but everybody contributes in some way, like, for example, on
- 16:35Speaker 1: a song God's Playground, DMX does a prayer at the end,
- 16:40Speaker 1: and I believe it's a prayer he did when he
- 16:43Speaker 1: met rock Him for the first time you've seen if
- 16:47Speaker 1: you haven't, check out that video online. But y'all know
- 16:51Speaker 1: how I do when it comes to reviews. I did
- 16:53Speaker 1: give it three listens, right. The first one is my impressions,
- 16:56Speaker 1: the second one is to listen more intently, and then
- 16:59Speaker 1: the third one is to confirm my thoughts and after
- 17:03Speaker 1: listening to this album three times and is the quick
- 17:08Speaker 1: review for some of y'all, it's that bad. It's better
- 17:15Speaker 1: than I thought it would be, but it's not great.
- 17:22Speaker 1: I could tell you completely right now. It will not
- 17:25Speaker 1: be in my top five of the year. And that's
- 17:28Speaker 1: no knock on it. That top five has become very
- 17:32Speaker 1: tough to nail down. With the number of releases recently
- 17:36Speaker 1: that are so dope, I have to rethink how I
- 17:40Speaker 1: have things. Will it be in my best of the
- 17:43Speaker 1: year right which is a longer list of ten albums.
- 17:47Speaker 1: I doubt it because what I find with this project
- 17:51Speaker 1: in particular is that even though the beats are cool,
- 17:57Speaker 1: you don't get enough rock him And it's kind of
- 18:00Speaker 1: disappointing because I liked the beats better than I thought
- 18:06Speaker 1: I would. Because the first single b L featuring Corrupt
- 18:10Speaker 1: and master Killer did not move me whatsoever, like at all.
- 18:16Speaker 1: I was just like, this is what we're gonna hear.
- 18:19Speaker 1: Corrupt hasn't been as good as he used to be,
- 18:23Speaker 1: at least not in every performance, even though that Dog
- 18:26Speaker 1: Pound album will be and my best of the year
- 18:29Speaker 1: because the rocking is straight, but this particular feature was like, Man. Also,
- 18:35Speaker 1: I'm not the biggest fan of master Killer. I get it.
- 18:39Speaker 1: Some people like him. I'm not a fan of his flow,
- 18:41Speaker 1: never really have been. Obviously, there's some iconic verses on
- 18:46Speaker 1: some iconic Boutange songs where you just kind of like
- 18:49Speaker 1: all of it. And then he's had a song or
- 18:52Speaker 1: two here and there. As far as his solo career
- 18:54Speaker 1: that Oh Bars that I liked, but I would have preferred,
- 19:00Speaker 1: respectfully Jizz on this record with rock Kim and rock
- 19:06Speaker 1: Kim lyrically was I think he was better than he's been,
- 19:12Speaker 1: or maybe it's just because the production is better than
- 19:15Speaker 1: his previous album from a couple of years ago that
- 19:19Speaker 1: he sounds better. But again, you just don't get enough,
- 19:24Speaker 1: Like I swear this is a song on here, I
- 19:26Speaker 1: don't remember which one it was where I'm like, did
- 19:31Speaker 1: rock him even Ron on this record? I couldn't remember.
- 19:37Speaker 1: I was like, I don't think rock Kim had a
- 19:39Speaker 1: verse on this song. Now standout performances As far as
- 19:46Speaker 1: MC's BG on the song now is the time, I
- 19:53Speaker 1: liked it a lot. I was skeptical seeing Beg on
- 19:56Speaker 1: there with huss King, Penn and rock Kim, and I
- 19:58Speaker 1: was like, yo, I don't know about this comp to Menace,
- 20:02Speaker 1: but I really liked VG on it, so I thought
- 20:05Speaker 1: he was a standout. Hust King Pen did his job.
- 20:09Speaker 1: Nipsey Hustles verse was cool, but I think I liked
- 20:13Speaker 1: playing Asia's verse better. Sky Zoo and Fred the God's
- 20:17Speaker 1: Son did their thing. Same thing with thirty eight Special
- 20:20Speaker 1: even though I'm not the biggest fan, but I don't
- 20:22Speaker 1: have nothing to do with his bars to do his nice. Also,
- 20:27Speaker 1: King Crooked was dope. Cannabis. I did not like Chino XL.
- 20:31Speaker 1: I've kind of never liked. I get why people like him.
- 20:35Speaker 1: He again, these dudes aren't whack with their bars. It's
- 20:39Speaker 1: just for me. It's more delivery voices in some case
- 20:44Speaker 1: and stuff like that. Other standouts Cooji Rat was cool
- 20:49Speaker 1: on a versus. Joe l Ortiz was pretty dope. Prodigy
- 20:55Speaker 1: was good. It made me really want that Mob Deep
- 20:58Speaker 1: album like ASAP. But to me, the best verse on
- 21:02Speaker 1: this album was method Man and it's the last song
- 21:06Speaker 1: is a song called Sign of the Seven. Method Man Man,
- 21:11Speaker 1: like his last album was not bad, it was okay.
- 21:16Speaker 1: I think it was meth Flab three, but it's like
- 21:21Speaker 1: his albums can live up to his guest featured verses.
- 21:26Speaker 1: This is one of his best. In my opinion, I
- 21:28Speaker 1: thought Methody Man was dope. So again, in all, I
- 21:34Speaker 1: think it was a pretty solid project, a solid album
- 21:41Speaker 1: for rock Kim. But the only problem with that is
- 21:46Speaker 1: we wanted to hear from rock Kim, and we wanted
- 21:49Speaker 1: to hear more from rock Kim, and this is just
- 21:52Speaker 1: a compilation. Honestly, rock Kim, even though this was probably
- 21:56Speaker 1: more of a display of his production versus him as
- 22:00Speaker 1: an MC, he might have he should have just did that.
- 22:04Speaker 1: He should have just said, Yo, this is me as
- 22:07Speaker 1: a producer, and I'm bringing a lot of my favorite
- 22:09Speaker 1: rappers on the track. And then maybe he just rhyme
- 22:12Speaker 1: on one track at the very end and that's it.
- 22:15Speaker 1: At least you could set the expectations. But all that
- 22:18Speaker 1: return of the God blah blah blah, the God is
- 22:21Speaker 1: back God, But no, he wasn't. The God was doing
- 22:25Speaker 1: what I do right when I know I'm not going
- 22:28Speaker 1: to be at the party the whole time, I'm showing
- 22:30Speaker 1: my face and then I'm gonna disappear. And that's kind
- 22:35Speaker 1: of what it felt like so to me. Honestly, unless
- 22:38Speaker 1: you like all the guest appearances and all of this
- 22:40Speaker 1: works for you, it will be a forgettable album really
- 22:46Speaker 1: quick by the end of the year, definitely will. And
- 22:50Speaker 1: it's unfortunate because we're in the year where he rock
- 22:54Speaker 1: and com and got some heat, you know, ll kuj
- 22:58Speaker 1: and q Tips sounded like they got to a winner
- 23:00Speaker 1: on their hand. You know, there's the Nods and Premier
- 23:03Speaker 1: that's supposedly supposed to drop, and then there's a whole
- 23:06Speaker 1: bunch of other albums that were just better than this.
- 23:10Speaker 1: That makes the competition thick where you're just not going
- 23:15Speaker 1: to think about this album. I'll say this, if you're
- 23:19Speaker 1: a person who doesn't listen to as much hip hop
- 23:23Speaker 1: as I do, or you know at all, and you
- 23:27Speaker 1: got excited because there's a rock Kimberlys, you may like it,
- 23:32Speaker 1: but you may not like it because we just want
- 23:37Speaker 1: more rock cam on it. That's all. Was that so hopefully,
- 23:40Speaker 1: rock Hem says, I hear y'all, here's an EP and
- 23:44Speaker 1: it's just me rapping on it, right, and a guest
- 23:47Speaker 1: feature maybe a NAS and that's it, right, But this
- 23:52Speaker 1: ain't it to be honest, it's cool, but I could
- 23:56Speaker 1: see myself really not listening to it ever again. So
- 24:00Speaker 1: there you have it. What do you think about rock
- 24:03Speaker 1: Hem's new project. Did you like it? Are you willing
- 24:06Speaker 1: to listen? You could care less because Pete and cls
- 24:09Speaker 1: is so heavy roads, Peat and cl Wow. Pete in
