- 0:00Welcome back to Fostering Faith. I'm gonna be
- 0:02your host today and we are moving on with our
- 0:06love and friendship series. And so we are in
- 0:09a season where February and Valentine's Day and
- 0:14you just... coming off the holidays. And so we
- 0:17are full of love and life here at Fostering Faith.
- 0:21And so if you are new here to Fostering Faith,
- 0:23we are just fostering our faith together. We
- 0:25are walking in community, figuring it out as
- 0:27we go and just loving every minute of it. And
- 0:30so if you are a returned listener, thank you
- 0:32so much for coming home this week. And so today
- 0:35we're going to be talking about forgiveness and
- 0:37reconciliation. Forgiveness is really is an easily
- 0:42one of the hardest commands that God has ever
- 0:44given us to give and I had recently did a episode
- 0:48on forgiveness and I had a lady she had reached
- 0:51out and she said that she had been walking in
- 0:53unforgiveness for years and listened to that
- 0:56podcast and was just really moved by it and she
- 1:00reached out to the person that she had held in
- 1:02offense and she had forgiven them. And so I know
- 1:06that these messengers are encouraging people.
- 1:09And so we just want to thank you for reaching
- 1:10out and letting us know that you guys are hearing
- 1:12us. Comments, share us on social media and subscribe
- 1:15and allowing us to grow this podcast. And so
- 1:19we can just help people. That's what we're here
- 1:21to do. And so we are going to be moving into
- 1:24forgiveness is one of the easiest and hardest
- 1:27commandments that God has ever called us to do.
- 1:29And so it's funny because we love talking about
- 1:33how God forgives us, and we shout, we cry, we
- 1:37lift our hands, we get emotional, talk about
- 1:39grace and mercy and restoration. But the moment
- 1:41God turns the conversation and says, now you
- 1:45go forgive others the way I forgive you, suddenly
- 1:49everybody gets real quiet. Because forgiveness
- 1:52isn't just spiritual, it's surgical. It cuts
- 1:55into places that we've tucked away. It exposes
- 1:57wounds we thought we moved past from. It forces
- 2:00us to confront things that we've been pretending
- 2:02didn't bother us anymore. And if we're honest,
- 2:06a lot of us learn just to live with the emotional
- 2:09limping instead of letting God heal that leg.
- 2:12And so forgiveness is uncomfortable because it
- 2:15requires honesty. And honesty means admitting,
- 2:18yes, that hurt me. Yes, that disappointed me.
- 2:22Yes, that broke something in me. Yes, I'm still
- 2:26angry. Yes, I still replay it. And yes, I wish
- 2:32it happened differently. Forgiveness is not denial.
- 2:35It is not minimizing. It is not pretending. It
- 2:37is not spiritualizing the pain away. God never
- 2:40calls you to lie to yourself in order to appear
- 2:43holy. He calls you to bring truth into His presence
- 2:46so He can work with it. Think of David in the
- 2:50Psalms. This man is so honest. He didn't hold
- 2:55anything back. He poured out every emotion into
- 2:58the table before God. Anger, betrayal, fear,
- 3:02disappointment, sorrow, confusion. And God never
- 3:05once said, David, stop being dramatic. God met
- 3:10him in the emotions and shaped him through the
- 3:13honesty. Forgiveness doesn't start with your
- 3:15willpower. It starts with a willingness to say,
- 3:17God, This hurts so much. Help me carry this.
- 3:23And maybe the reason for forgiveness is so painful
- 3:26for you is because the wound wasn't small. It
- 3:30was big. And maybe it wasn't a one -time thing.
- 3:35Maybe it hurt you repeatedly. And maybe it was
- 3:39ongoing neglect. Maybe it was an emotional abandonment.
- 3:41Maybe it was a betrayal by someone that promised
- 3:43to be loyal to you. Maybe it was someone who
- 3:46preached grace. but never gave you any. Maybe
- 3:50it was someone who said, I'll never hurt you
- 3:52and then hurt you deeply. Maybe it was someone
- 3:55who never, someone who should have protected
- 3:58you. Maybe it was yourself. You just don't carry
- 4:03events, you carry people. And when people wound
- 4:07us, the wound doesn't stay small. And so let's
- 4:12start here. Forgiveness is not pretending something
- 4:14didn't hurt. Forgiveness is admitting something
- 4:17did hurt and choosing to not let you own you
- 4:22anymore. Forgiveness is not sweeping the pain
- 4:26under the rug. It is sweeping the bitterness
- 4:28out of our heart. Forgiveness is not saying,
- 4:31I'm fine. It's saying it mattered, but it won't
- 4:36define me. I think a lot of confusion around
- 4:39forgiveness comes from the misunderstanding of
- 4:41what forgiveness actually is. And so let's break
- 4:44it down. And so forgiveness is not forgetting,
- 4:48excusing, approving, reconciling, trusting again
- 4:54immediately, pretending everything is the same,
- 4:59ignoring consequences, restoring someone to the
- 5:03same level of access. Forgiveness is releasing
- 5:08the bitterness, letting God be the judge. cutting
- 5:13the emotional tie between you and the offense,
- 5:16choosing freedom over resentment, handing over
- 5:21the right to revenge, and letting the Holy Spirit
- 5:25heal the wound, protecting your heart from becoming
- 5:27hardened, obeying God even whenever you're feeling
- 5:31disagree. Forgiveness is a spiritual discipline,
- 5:35a supernatural act, a healing posture. You forgive
- 5:39because holding on only hurts you. And Paul says
- 5:44in Ephesians 4 .31 -32, Notice the order. Let
- 6:02bitterness go. Then you can walk in kindness
- 6:05and compassion. You can't carry bitterness and
- 6:08Christ -like love at the same time. Forgiveness
- 6:11detoxifies your spirit. It's this spiritual cleanse
- 6:15you don't ask for, but you desperately need.
- 6:19And let's go into something a little bit deeper.
- 6:22Forgiveness and reconciliation are not the same
- 6:24thing. This confuses so many of us. Forgiveness
- 6:28is a command. Reconciliation is conditional.
- 6:33Forgiveness is one -sided. Reconciliation is
- 6:36two -sided. You can forgive someone completely
- 6:40and never reconcile the relationship. Forgiveness
- 6:43heals the heart. Reconciliation restores the
- 6:47relationship. And that relationship may not be
- 6:50safe, healthy, wise, or meant to continue. Look
- 6:56at Romans 12, 18. If it is possible, as far as
- 6:59it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.
- 7:04Not. Stay best friends. not let them back into
- 7:08your inner circle not pretend nothing happened
- 7:12as far as it depends on you live at peace meaning
- 7:17do your part keep your heart clean set your boundaries
- 7:22release your bitterness some relationships can't
- 7:27be reconciled because the person is unrepentant
- 7:32unsafe emotionally abusive Patterns never change.
- 7:40The wound is deep and the trust is shattered.
- 7:43The season's over. God removed them to protect
- 7:47your calling. The relationship was built on dysfunction.
- 7:53Reconciliation requires repentance, accountability,
- 7:56fruit, humility, and the willingness to rebuild
- 8:00trust. And that's why forgiveness is not weakness.
- 8:05Forgiveness is wisdom. Forgiveness is strength.
- 8:09Forgiveness is in alignment with heaven. Let's
- 8:12talk about some something most people never say
- 8:15out loud. Forgiving someone does not mean you
- 8:20understand why they did what they did. You may
- 8:24never understand. Some behavior is unexplainable.
- 8:29Some choices make no sense. Nonsense. None doesn't
- 8:34make no sense. Some betrayal. will never come
- 8:37with closure but forgiveness isn't based on understanding
- 8:41it's based on surrender your surrender the right
- 8:45to carry the weight you surrender the need for
- 8:48explanation you surrender the desire to replay
- 8:51that hurt because replaying pain is how the enemy
- 8:54keeps you stuck in your past forgiveness pulls
- 8:57you from your present healing pulls you into
- 9:01your future now let's go deeper one of the hardest
- 9:05people to forgive is not your husband, not your
- 9:10best friend, not your co -worker, it's yourself.
- 9:15We hold ourselves to an impossible standard.
- 9:20We punish ourselves for things Jesus already
- 9:23paid for. We rehearse our regrets and we replay
- 9:27our failures and we rehearse who we used to be
- 9:31instead of receiving who God says we are now.
- 9:34But let me say this lovingly and boldly. If God
- 9:40has forgiven you, who are you to keep punishing
- 9:44yourself? You are not more just than God. You
- 9:50are not more righteous than God. And you are
- 9:54not more powerful than the cross. Some of you
- 9:58need to forgive your younger version of yourself.
- 10:01Some of you need to forgive the messy, sacred,
- 10:04insecure version of you that made decisions out
- 10:08of fear, loneliness, trauma, and immaturity.
- 10:12You are not the same person anymore. Stop treating
- 10:15your healed self like you are broken. Now I want
- 10:21to go into something really important. Healing
- 10:24takes time. And a lot of Christians think, I
- 10:28forgive them, why do I still hurt? Because forgiveness
- 10:32is a decision. Healing is a process. Just like
- 10:37salvation is a moment, but sanctification is
- 10:40a lifetime. Forgiveness doesn't remove memory,
- 10:44it removes the poison. Forgiveness doesn't erase
- 10:48the scar, it drains the infection. Forgiveness
- 10:51doesn't rewrite the past, it releases your future.
- 10:55It's like taking out the thorn, and the thorn
- 10:59is gone instantly, but the wound takes time to
- 11:02close. Let healing be gradual. Let God work slowly.
- 11:08Let yourselves be human. And I want to address
- 11:11the person who says, Tracy, I don't want to forgive.
- 11:14I'm not ready. Then let's start with this. Are
- 11:19you willing to let God make you willing? Because
- 11:23willingness, is the first seed. You don't have
- 11:27to feel forgiveness to begin forgiveness. And
- 11:31so let me pray this over you right now. Lord,
- 11:35soften their heart, loosen their grip on bitterness,
- 11:38make space in their spirit for healing, give
- 11:41them willingness over if they don't have that
- 11:43feeling yet. We know that you can heal all wounds.
- 11:47We pray this in Jesus' name, amen. And before
- 11:51we close, I wanna give you a picture. Imagine
- 11:54holding a rope. Someone wronged you and you grab
- 11:59the rope. The rope symbolizes the offense. The
- 12:03longer that you hold it, the more it burns. Your
- 12:07hands blister. Your fingers ache. Your heart,
- 12:11your arms cramp. And you keep holding it because
- 12:14letting go sometimes validates what's happened.
- 12:18But letting go doesn't justify the other person.
- 12:22It feels, frees you from the burn. And forgiveness
- 12:27is opening your hand, letting the rope fall and
- 12:31allowing God to tend to the wounds. And so your
- 12:36action this week is simple but powerful. Write
- 12:39down one name or one moment, bring it to God
- 12:44every day and ask Him to help you release it.
- 12:49Start the process. You don't have to finish it
- 12:51today. Just you have to start. And so we hope
- 12:55that this message encourages you this week. Forgiveness
- 12:57is the poison that you're drinking. Let go of
- 13:01the bottle. Let go of the anger. Let go of the
- 13:04hurt. Let God help you heal. And so we would
- 13:09love to pray for you. Dear Heavenly Father, thank
- 13:11you so much for these listeners. I lift them
- 13:13up, every person that's listening. You see their
- 13:16hidden pain. You see the deep betrayal. You see
- 13:18the silent wounds. You hear the private tears
- 13:21fall on their pillows. You know every story.
- 13:24Today I pray for supernatural strength to forgive,
- 13:27to heal the brokenhearted, to restore what was
- 13:30taken, to release them from bitterness, resentment,
- 13:32heaviness, show them the freedom that comes from
- 13:35obedience, cover their hearts with peace, surround
- 13:38them with your comfort, and teach them to forgive
- 13:41the way that you forgive us, fully and freely.
- 13:45We pray this in Jesus' name. Amen. And Amen.
- 13:48Oh, we hope that this message encouraged you.
- 13:50We hope that these series are giving you encouragement
- 13:53in life. Make sure that you are going to the
- 13:55website fosteringsfaithmedia .com and you are

- 14:01for you guys and even maybe take it to your church
- 14:03and see about doing a Bible study on them together
- 14:05for past episodes. We hope this message encourages
- 14:08you, inspires you and that you are growing closer
- 14:10to Christ. Have a great week. We love you guys.
