Transcript
- 0:01SPEAKER_00: Welcome to the Feminine Ledger.
- 0:04SPEAKER_00: This podcast explores the deeper patterns underneath business, money, and decision making, and what shifts when you begin to see them clearly.
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: My name is Allison Fisher, and my work focuses on helping women founders translate growth into structure so their businesses don't just expand, but actually hold.
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: On today's episode, we are going to be talking about when growth still depends on you in your business.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: There is a phase in business that I don't think that we talk about clearly enough.
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: And it's not the beginning.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: It's really the phase when things are working.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: Revenue is coming in, customers are responding, the business is moving, and yet it feels heavier than it should.
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: Not chaotic, not broken, but heavier, more dependent on you than you expected, more effortful than the level of revenue would suggest.
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: And what I want to talk about today is why that happens, because this is actually one of the most important turning points in a business, and most founders misread it.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: Let's begin.
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: First we're going to discuss the phase that no one names.
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: So let's start by naming this clearly.
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: This is the phase where you are the distribution channel.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: You are the one showing up at events, the one building relationships, the one explaining the product, the one creating the momentum.
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: And especially in product-based businesses, this phase is very normal.
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: It's how traction is built.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: It's how early customers are one.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: It's how you refine your product, your messaging, and your positioning.
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: So I want to be very clear about something.
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: This is not a mistake.
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: This is not something you did wrong.
- 2:40SPEAKER_00: This is how many strong businesses begin.
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: But here's where it becomes important to see clearly.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: This phase has a limit.
- 2:53SPEAKER_00: Let's examine when you become part of the system.
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: At a certain point, something subtly shifts, and most founders don't notice it immediately.
- 3:06SPEAKER_00: You don't just run the business anymore, you hold the business.
- 3:12SPEAKER_00: Your presence is now compensating for things that aren't yet structured.
- 3:19SPEAKER_00: So what happens?
- 3:20SPEAKER_00: You go to more events, you increase your visibility, you push more effort into the system, and revenue responds.
- 3:31SPEAKER_00: So it looks like it's working, but underneath that, your energy is now part of the operating model.
- 3:41SPEAKER_00: That's the part that no one says out loud.
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: And this is where things start to feel like I can't quite step away.
- 3:50SPEAKER_00: If I slow down, does this slow down?
- 3:55SPEAKER_00: Why does this feel like it depends on me this much?
- 3:59SPEAKER_00: Because it does.
- 4:03SPEAKER_00: Let's look at the distortion that creates.
- 4:08SPEAKER_00: When your effort becomes part of the system, it starts to distort your visibility.
- 4:14SPEAKER_00: You can't fully see what's actually driving revenue, which channels are working independently, what's profitable versus what's just active.
- 4:29SPEAKER_00: And because your presence is blending into the results, this is where founders often say, we're growing, but I don't fully understand what's working.
- 4:44SPEAKER_00: And that's not a lack of intelligence, it's a structural blind spot, especially in product businesses where trade spend stacks quietly, promotions compound, and distribution adds layers.
- 5:03SPEAKER_00: Revenue can look strong while margins quietly compress.
- 5:08SPEAKER_00: And because the top line is moving, no one stops to question it.
- 5:16SPEAKER_00: Let's look at why this feels like pressure.
- 5:21SPEAKER_00: This is the part that most founders feel, but don't always articulate.
- 5:26SPEAKER_00: Growth at this stage doesn't feel expansive.
- 5:30SPEAKER_00: It feels like pressure.
- 5:32SPEAKER_00: Because more revenue means more complexity, more decisions, and more operational weight, but not necessarily more clarity.
- 5:46SPEAKER_00: So instead of the business feeling lighter as it grows, it starts to feel heavier.
- 5:53SPEAKER_00: And this is where a lot of founders unconsciously try to solve it by doing more, expanding more, and pushing harder.
- 6:05SPEAKER_00: But the issue isn't effort, it's structure.
- 6:12SPEAKER_00: Let's examine the turning point.
- 6:15SPEAKER_00: This is where the real shift happens.
- 6:18SPEAKER_00: And it's a very specific shift.
- 6:21SPEAKER_00: It's from I need to keep this moving to I need to understand what's actually holding this up.
- 6:31SPEAKER_00: This is where we move from momentum to structure.
- 6:36SPEAKER_00: And structure doesn't mean becoming corporate or losing the essence of your brand.
- 6:43SPEAKER_00: It means being able to see clearly where your profit actually is, what's truly working, what's being carried by effort.
- 6:56SPEAKER_00: Because until you can see that, you can't actually stabilize the business.
- 7:02SPEAKER_00: And this is where many founders stay longer than they need to, because momentum is seductive.
- 7:10SPEAKER_00: Momentum is not stability.
- 7:15SPEAKER_00: So let's look at what changes when you see it.
- 7:20SPEAKER_00: When this clicks, everything starts to shift.
- 7:25SPEAKER_00: Not dramatically, not loudly, but precisely.
- 7:31SPEAKER_00: You start making different decisions.
- 7:34SPEAKER_00: You stop overextending into channels that aren't truly working, and you refine instead of expand.
- 7:45SPEAKER_00: And the business begins to reorganize around clarity instead of effort.
- 7:52SPEAKER_00: This is where growth starts to feel different.
- 7:56SPEAKER_00: Not because there's less happening, but because less of it depends on you.
- 8:05SPEAKER_00: If you are in this phase where things are working but feel heavier than they should, that's not a failure.
- 8:14SPEAKER_00: That's a signal.
- 8:16SPEAKER_00: You've reached the edge of what effort can do.
- 8:20SPEAKER_00: And the next phase of your business isn't about more, it's about seeing clearly and building something that can hold what you've already created.
- 8:34SPEAKER_00: So if you're in that in-between space, that's usually where the work begins.
- 8:43SPEAKER_00: Thank you so much for listening.
- 8:46SPEAKER_00: If something in this conversation helped you see your work or your decisions with greater clarity, take that insight with you.
- 8:55SPEAKER_00: Clarity, I have found, compounds over time.
