- 0:32This is Gracelyn Keller with the Becker's Healthcare
- 0:34podcast, and we are recording live at the
- 0:36thirteenth annual CEO and CFO roundtable.
- 0:39I'm currently joined by Brenda Rocha, who is
- 0:42the chief nursing officer at Baystate Medical Center.
- 0:44So, Brenda, thanks for being here. And I'm
- 0:46gonna have you start off just by telling
- 0:48us a little bit more about yourself and
- 0:49your background.
- 0:50Thank you for having me. I appreciate it.
- 0:53Yes. So I have been in health care
- 0:55for twenty six years.
- 0:57I'm happy to, and excited and very honored
- 1:00to have been part of the profession for
- 1:01that long. I as you as you mentioned,
- 1:03I am, the chief nursing officer at Baystate
- 1:06Medical Center, which is part of the larger
- 1:08organization, which is Baystate Health System.
- 1:11I started my career as an ED nurse
- 1:13way back in the day and had the
- 1:15great opportunity of having a lot of great
- 1:17mentors. But throughout my career, I have been,
- 1:20in academia. I've taught in
- 1:22several universities. I've also been a nurse practitioner
- 1:25and, most recently now the chief chief nurse
- 1:28officer.
- 1:29Wonderful. Well, thank you for taking the time
- 1:31to be here. And let's start our conversation
- 1:33talking about
- 1:34growth strategy. So I'd love to know more
- 1:36about your growth strategy specifically over the next
- 1:39year or two. Thank you for the question.
- 1:40I think that's a great question.
- 1:42Currently, Baystate Health is going through a a
- 1:45transformational journey. So there's a lot of great
- 1:47changes happening, great work happening. And to align
- 1:50with that great work, you know, we wanted
- 1:52to really focus on some of the challenges
- 1:54that health care itself is having, and that
- 1:56being, you know, the workforce
- 1:58of the workforce shortages,
- 2:01retention, recruitment, and burnout.
- 2:03So what a better way to align ourselves
- 2:05with an evidence based program, which is not
- 2:07new to anyone, but it's the the nurse
- 2:10healthy environment program.
- 2:12It's a great program, and we've started that
- 2:13initiative, and that's gonna take us over the
- 2:15for the course of years, one to two
- 2:17years to be able to kind of fully
- 2:19embrace it. But one of the things that
- 2:21in mind that we did, we wanted to
- 2:22set some goals for this program and align
- 2:24with what we wanted the outcome to be.
- 2:26One was to really enhance the work environment,
- 2:29two, to reduce,
- 2:30burnout,
- 2:31to enhance,
- 2:32retention, and also patient care.
- 2:35And tell us about the most exciting and
- 2:37impactful initiative or project that you're currently working
- 2:40on. Well, that kinda likes an extension to
- 2:42the one I just said because right now,
- 2:45in fact, to be to be honest with
- 2:46you, we started in March already. We started
- 2:48this initiative, and it's just amazing. And I'm
- 2:50pretty excited about it because we were able
- 2:52to meet with over 700 nurses across the
- 2:54system.
- 2:55So to hear
- 2:57the feedback and such the dialogue
- 3:00is very empowering. So I was really happy
- 3:02to have such engagement over the all the
- 3:04systems. So the CNOs and I got together,
- 3:06and we were able to really get all
- 3:08that feedback. And we took that feedback and
- 3:10make themes out of them, and we were
- 3:12able to put them into buckets and create
- 3:14work groups, and the work
- 3:16continues. So we're really hoping,
- 3:17that we're gonna have some really great success
- 3:19with it. So far, so good. And and
- 3:22we're just happy that we're gonna be able
- 3:23to start addressing some of those issues that
- 3:25we've that I spoke of earlier.
- 3:27And what is the most important thing that
- 3:29you think health care executives should be doing
- 3:31right now to make sure their organizations are
- 3:32successful for the future?
- 3:34Well, I think we need to continue to
- 3:36be innovative,
- 3:37and also invest in technology enhancements. I think
- 3:41that is so important because what what that
- 3:43will do, it'll only,
- 3:45make our workflows for clinicians more efficient.
- 3:48And in the long run, it will provide
- 3:49better outcomes for our patients.
- 3:52Wonderful. Well, thank you so much for joining
- 3:54me today on the Becker's Healthcare Podcast. Again,
- 3:56we are recording live at the thirteenth annual
- 3:59CEO and CFO roundtable.
- 4:01Thank you.
