Clarissa Harlowe, or the History of a Young Lady Volume 1 Letter XXX
In which Miss Clarissa Harlowe, with a spirit uneasily troubled, recounts the bold and disconcerting appearance of a certain Mr. Lovelace at church, and reflects with measured gravity upon his pride and the disorder his presence hath wrought in her family. She petitions her correspondent with candid thoughts on the nature of pride and civility, whilst expressing a deep apprehension of further bold proceedings that may well render her very existence precarious.
