- 0:11Hello friends, it's Shawn. Here it is Wednesday.
- 0:15It's April the 29th. Where is the 4th month of this
- 0:20year going? My goodness, here we are.
- 0:23Just feels like we started the year, but about you, there has
- 0:26been a fair bit happening between the start of the year
- 0:29and now. If we look back and think about
- 0:30all the things that we've managed, yes, these things
- 0:34continue to go. And day by day, the one thing
- 0:37that we are able to do is punctuate our daily lives, to
- 0:42instil our daily lives with God's Word so that His Word can
- 0:47bounce around in our heads and reshape the lens that we use to
- 0:51see the world, to see the world through God's eyes and the
- 0:54promises that He offers us. How good is that?
- 0:57And that is what this book of Joshua is all about, God's
- 1:00promises coming true for his people.
- 1:03And if you managed to survive yesterday's reading, wow, it was
- 1:06a lot of places being given to a lot of different tribes.
- 1:10Today is a much more conversational and brief one
- 1:14than yesterday, so hopefully it's a bit easier to follow.
- 1:17But as we listen to these, we are just so aware of God being
- 1:21faithful and true to His people and engaging in their life in
- 1:25that place to care for them in the way that they need that
- 1:28care. How wonderful is our God that He
- 1:31chooses to do that so intimately.
- 1:34So let's do it again, shall we? Let us read this story, the next
- 1:38instalment in Joshua Chapter 14. The remaining tribes of Israel
- 1:53received land in Canaan as allotted by Eliezar the priest,
- 1:57Joshua son of Nun, and the tribal leaders.
- 2:01These 9 1/2 tribes received their grants of land by means of
- 2:05sacred lots in accordance with the Lord's command through
- 2:08Moses. Moses had already given a grant
- 2:11of land to the 2 1/2 tribes on the east side of the Jordan
- 2:14River, but he had given the Levites no such allotment.
- 2:19The descendants of Joseph had become two separate tribes,
- 2:23Manasseh and Ephraim, and the Levites were given no land at
- 2:26all, only towns to live in with surrounding pasture lands for
- 2:30their livestock and all their possessions.
- 2:33So the land was distributed in strict accordance with the
- 2:37Lord's commands to Moses. A delegation from the tribe of
- 2:41Judah, led by Caleb, son of Gefuna the Kennethite, came to
- 2:46Joshua at Gilgal. Caleb said to Joshua, Remember
- 2:50what the Lord said to Moses, the man of God, about you and me
- 2:54when we were at Kadeshbarnia. I was 40 years old when Moses,
- 2:58the servant of the Lord, sent me from Kadeshbarnia to explore the
- 3:02land of Canaan. I returned and gave an honest
- 3:05report, but my brothers who went with me frightened the people
- 3:09from entering the Promised Land. For my part, I wholeheartedly
- 3:13followed the Lord my God. So that day Moses solemnly
- 3:17promised me. The land of Canaan, on which you
- 3:20were just walking, will be your grant of land and that of your
- 3:25descendants forever, because you wholeheartedly followed the Lord
- 3:29my God. Now, as you can see, the Lord
- 3:33has kept me alive and well as He promised for all these 45 years
- 3:38since Moses made this promise, even while Israel wandered in
- 3:42the wilderness. Today I AM 85 years old.
- 3:46I am as strong now as I was when Moses sent me on that journey,
- 3:50and I can still travel and fight as well as I could then.
- 3:53So give me the Hill Country that the Lord promised me.
- 3:57You will remember that as scouts we found the descendants of Anak
- 4:01living there in great walled towns.
- 4:04But if the Lord is with me, I will drive them out of the land,
- 4:07just as the Lord said. Sir Joshua blessed Caleb son of
- 4:12Gefane and gave Hebron to him as his portion of land.
- 4:17Hebron still belongs to the descendants of Caleb son of
- 4:20Japhane the Kenazite, because he wholeheartedly followed the
- 4:24Lord, the God of Israel. Previously, Hebron had been
- 4:29called Kirith ABBA. It had been named after ABBA, a
- 4:33great hero of the descendants of Annak, and the land had rest
- 4:38from war. Lord, we see that not only do
- 4:52you provide land to all of those tribes as you promised, but you
- 4:56still remember the individual who received that promise 45
- 5:01years early, which I've got to say, it feels like a very long
- 5:04time to us, but to you, it's as fresh as a Daisy in your memory.
- 5:09And you are faithful to that promise.
- 5:13Lord, thank you that everything that you promise us, everything
- 5:16that you say, you will give us. Everything that you say, you
- 5:19will protect us from everything that you say, You have already
- 5:22won for us. We can rest certain in the
- 5:27knowledge that you are faithful and true and you remember all of
- 5:31those things. Thank you for the generosity of
- 5:35your love and provision for us as individual as we hear, as it
- 5:41was to Caleb back in the day. You are a good God and we love
- 5:46you and we praise you and we submit ourselves to your rule
- 5:50and your authority. We pray this in the saving name
- 5:54of Jesus, Amen.
