- 0:00Speaker 1: Saturday. It's the first road game in two months for
- 0:03Speaker 1: the football Huskies. They visit the Blazers of UAB and Birmingham, Alabama.
- 0:07Speaker 1: Radio coverage starting with Bob Joyce and the Hard Auto
- 0:09Speaker 1: Group count down to kickoff at one, then game on
- 0:13Speaker 1: at two point thirty here along the Yukon Sports Network,
- 0:15Speaker 1: at the Varsity Network AP Andavarsity Network dot Com. Back
- 0:19Speaker 1: with Jim Moram, and later on we'll talk to Lou
- 0:22Speaker 1: Hanson and Jaden McDonald of the Huskies. But coach good
- 0:26Speaker 1: to see the running game get going again, as Yukon
- 0:30Speaker 1: was able to put the ball in the hands of
- 0:33Speaker 1: the running backs and get some really crucial yardage throughout
- 0:36Speaker 1: that win over Georgia State.
- 0:39Speaker 2: Yeah. I mean, you know, Mike, our identity is to
- 0:42Speaker 2: run the ball. That's what we've done best. It sets
- 0:46Speaker 2: everything up when you can run the ball. And you know,
- 0:49Speaker 2: we start out with a really positive play on that
- 0:52Speaker 2: first down. I told you last week it'd be nice
- 0:54Speaker 2: and we could win a toss and you know, go
- 0:55Speaker 2: out and get a stop on defense and give our
- 0:58Speaker 2: offensive field position. We were able to do that, and
- 0:59Speaker 2: then and me broke that and we got going from there,
- 1:03Speaker 2: and then We ended it with a fourth down conversion
- 1:06Speaker 2: with a really nice run by Cam that was blocked
- 1:08Speaker 2: well up front and blocked really well by the receiver
- 1:12Speaker 2: coming down and ceiling the backside. So you know, it
- 1:15Speaker 2: takes everybody to run the ball, and running the ball
- 1:18Speaker 2: helps us be a better football team, and you know
- 1:20Speaker 2: that's what we're aiming for.
- 1:22Speaker 1: Yeah, you con Rice and Georgia's state. The last two games,
- 1:27Speaker 1: Huskies eighty seven carries for four point fifty two. The
- 1:29Speaker 1: previous two Temple in wake Forest sixty six carries one
- 1:33Speaker 1: hundred and thirty nine. So huge improvement here in these
- 1:35Speaker 1: last couple of games. And you did it without west Ho,
- 1:38Speaker 1: the center who came from Syracuse. The middle of your
- 1:41Speaker 1: line is so important is a position he was unable
- 1:45Speaker 1: to go tell us about, you know, the decision how
- 1:48Speaker 1: you handle who plays center, and that chemistry has to
- 1:52Speaker 1: develop almost instantaneously, doesn't it.
- 1:54Speaker 2: Yeah, and Carston Cassidy and went in and did a
- 1:57Speaker 2: really good job. But you know, we played without you know,
- 2:00Speaker 2: our starting left guard and uh in Ben Morowski and
- 2:04Speaker 2: our starting center, and wes Ho and Carson went in
- 2:07Speaker 2: and did a great job. Chris Forton bounced over to
- 2:09Speaker 2: left guard. H Brady Weyburn went in and did a
- 2:12Speaker 2: really nice job at right guard. So, uh, you know,
- 2:16Speaker 2: you get to this point in the season and there's
- 2:18Speaker 2: gonna be guys that are dinged up. They're gonna miss games,
- 2:20Speaker 2: and you have to have the depth, and you have
- 2:22Speaker 2: to have the confidence in that depth, and they have
- 2:24Speaker 2: to have the confidence in each other, and they have
- 2:25Speaker 2: to have done the work to adjust as we go.
- 2:29Speaker 2: And we got a group of offensive linemen and tight
- 2:32Speaker 2: ends and received really every position where you know it's
- 2:35Speaker 2: the next man up mentality. It's like, hey, you know,
- 2:38Speaker 2: I don't even I don't I shouldn't say I don't
- 2:40Speaker 2: think about injuries. Obviously I think about injuries, but we're
- 2:43Speaker 2: never gonna use them as an excuse.
- 2:45Speaker 1: Yeah, you have to have depth on a football team because,
- 2:48Speaker 1: as you say, injuries really play a factor. Who you're
- 2:51Speaker 1: getting into your tenth game of the season as you
- 2:54Speaker 1: go to to UAB coach the third down thing. You
- 2:59Speaker 1: kind of been tremendous on third down defensively, but in
- 3:03Speaker 1: this game, Uh, Georgia State was able to keep drives going.
- 3:06Speaker 1: It was like uncanny because that was that's been one
- 3:09Speaker 1: of Yukon's strengths this year defensively getting off the field.
- 3:13Speaker 1: They couldn't do it this week. What was going on?
- 3:15Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean we were you know, we include third
- 3:18Speaker 2: and fourth down in that stat and you know they
- 3:21Speaker 2: were eleven of twenty on third and fourth down, which
- 3:25Speaker 2: you know, that's not characteristic of who we are as
- 3:27Speaker 2: a defense. They got themselves into some manageable third and
- 3:31Speaker 2: fourth down situations, they hit some plays, the quarterback got
- 3:34Speaker 2: out and ran a little bit. You know, we weren't.
- 3:37Speaker 2: We weren't right on some of the things that we
- 3:38Speaker 2: were doing defensively and coveraging our rus schemes, and you
- 3:43Speaker 2: know that can't happen. We have to be we have
- 3:45Speaker 2: to be better. We have to be more disciplined. We
- 3:46Speaker 2: have to give our players a great plan every week.
- 3:48Speaker 2: They got to go out and execute it. We've got
- 3:50Speaker 2: to adjust as coaches as the game goes on, They've
- 3:52Speaker 2: got to take to those adjustments. So kind of, you know,
- 3:56Speaker 2: it was a little bit of a slap in the face,
- 3:58Speaker 2: I think, just for our defense to have the struggles
- 4:01Speaker 2: that they had on third down. I know they take
- 4:03Speaker 2: it very seriously and there's a real intent on improving that.
- 4:07Speaker 2: Again as we go forward in the season.
- 4:10Speaker 1: Yeah, one thing you were talking about after the game
- 4:12Speaker 1: is finding ways to win. Obviously, the bottom line is
- 4:15Speaker 1: trying to win no matter what's happening. So, and I
- 4:18Speaker 1: heard this from the guy in the locker room, the
- 4:21Speaker 1: defense felt like they played subpar, They weren't up to
- 4:25Speaker 1: their standard, and they were very appreciative the offense was
- 4:28Speaker 1: able to put thirty four points up there. That was helpful.
- 4:32Speaker 1: So when you get in those kind of games and
- 4:34Speaker 1: the defense isn't playing up to that level that you'd
- 4:37Speaker 1: been at these last five or six games, do you
- 4:40Speaker 1: start to think about, well, we're gonna have to win
- 4:42Speaker 1: this thing some other way because it ain't happening for
- 4:45Speaker 1: us on the defensive side.
- 4:47Speaker 2: Well, I mean it's not like we were horrible on defense.
- 4:52Speaker 2: We just weren't where we've been the last few weeks.
- 4:55Speaker 2: I mean weren't bad. I just felt like, I mean,
- 4:58Speaker 2: you know, we had a twenty one point there in
- 5:00Speaker 2: the fourth quarter, one point in time, and they didn't
- 5:02Speaker 2: have many many points. So I think it was more
- 5:06Speaker 2: just the frustration of not being able to get off
- 5:07Speaker 2: the field and they were you know, they were eating
- 5:09Speaker 2: up the clock the way they were running their offense
- 5:11Speaker 2: and which made those third downplays that much more critical.
- 5:16Speaker 2: But I think the most important thing, Mike is, like
- 5:19Speaker 2: you said, as you developed through the year, either a
- 5:22Speaker 2: confidence or a lack of confidence in your ability to
- 5:24Speaker 2: win a game in different ways. And I think that
- 5:27Speaker 2: we've built a confidence up in our ability to win
- 5:30Speaker 2: games multiple types of ways. You know, we've would have
- 5:34Speaker 2: been able to do it with really really really good defense.
- 5:36Speaker 2: We've been able to do a really good offense. We've
- 5:38Speaker 2: been able to do it when a run games struggling.
- 5:40Speaker 2: We've been able to do when our run the games
- 5:41Speaker 2: going well. We've been able to do it when you know,
- 5:43Speaker 2: the strength of our defense is third down is not
- 5:46Speaker 2: where it needs to be. And you know the key though,
- 5:50Speaker 2: the key, Mike, is that putting it all together, you
- 5:54Speaker 2: know what I mean, and like, let's have one of
- 5:56Speaker 2: those games where we do it all very very well,
- 6:00Speaker 2: you know, where we don't have to really just depend
- 6:03Speaker 2: on one aspect. We can depend on all three phases
- 6:05Speaker 2: of the game to help us get a win.
- 6:07Speaker 1: Yeah, and that really is important when you get on
- 6:09Speaker 1: the road, that's for sure. You got to be better
- 6:11Speaker 1: than good sometimes to win away from home. That's what
- 6:14Speaker 1: Yukon's facing this week against the University of Alabama and Birmingham.
- 6:18Speaker 1: I'm gonna talk about Lou Hanson the tight end, What
- 6:21Speaker 1: a big day, Nick Evers running with the football. All
- 6:24Speaker 1: that's coming up and UAB. They've got some uber talented
- 6:28Speaker 1: athletes in their offensive side, that's for sure, and defense
- 6:32Speaker 1: as well. All that's coming up. As we continue on
- 6:35Speaker 1: the Yukon Football Coaches Show with Jim Mora,
