- 14:10Speaker 2: Let me encourage you to go and anything you've heard
- 14:13Speaker 2: us say or do, do the opposite.
- 14:15Speaker 5: Yes, give yourself that gift.
- 14:17Speaker 2: Have we at all? Have we hit one this season?
- 14:20Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 14:21Speaker 3: Yeah, early on. I think Week two was the last one.
- 14:23Speaker 2: I don't know how many episodes of misses we have.
- 14:26Speaker 2: It's unbelievable. It's more unbelievable than when I hit like
- 14:28Speaker 2: eleven in a row last year. I think this is
- 14:30Speaker 2: just the equaling out of life and odds. So that's
- 14:36Speaker 2: what's up. Do Same game parlays. Bowl Season's awesome because
- 14:39Speaker 2: I feel like I can watch the games, and as
- 14:41Speaker 2: the games are being played, I can determine what's going
- 14:43Speaker 2: to happen. I can see the vibe.
- 14:44Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 14:45Speaker 2: When I can see a vibe, I love doing in
- 14:47Speaker 2: game betting. I love doing same game parlays, but Draft
- 14:50Speaker 2: King Sports Book is what we use. What it's all about.
- 14:53Speaker 2: You know. All you have to do is go over
- 14:54Speaker 2: put in the code Bobby Sports. If you're a new user,
- 14:58Speaker 2: download the app code Bobby Sports twenty one up in
- 15:00Speaker 2: most eligible states, but age varies by jurisdiction. Eligibility and
- 15:03Speaker 2: a positive restrictions apply. A gambling problem called one hundred
- 15:05Speaker 2: gambler in New York called eight seven seven eight hope
- 15:07Speaker 2: and why or text hope and why four six seven
- 15:10Speaker 2: three six ' nine. All right, now, let's go over
- 15:17Speaker 2: and talk to Arkansas women's basketball coach Mike Neighbors. Really
- 15:21Speaker 2: like to interview because this dude reads a lot of books.
- 15:23Speaker 2: And I thought it was pretty cool how he said
- 15:24Speaker 2: he tested his reading, you know, a few years back,
- 15:26Speaker 2: and it's like an eighth grade reading level and he's like, okay,
- 15:29Speaker 2: I gotta get better than He figured out how to
- 15:30Speaker 2: read faster and now he reads everything.
- 15:32Speaker 5: Yeah, he's super interesting guy.
- 15:33Speaker 2: Really interesting guy. Here he is, coach Mike Neighbors. Coach,
- 15:36Speaker 2: thanks for having us today, Welcome to the house. Thanks.
- 15:39Speaker 2: Your office is you got a corner office? You got
- 15:41Speaker 2: a bathroom in the office, Yeah, didn't know we were
- 15:44Speaker 2: dealing with that elite of status here.
- 15:46Speaker 6: I'm not sure that's what it is. But for a
- 15:48Speaker 6: guy that went to school here that view a Bud Walter, Yeah,
- 15:51Speaker 6: that's awesome every single day. Man, you can't beat it.
- 15:53Speaker 2: Whenever I talk to somebody who coaches at their alma mater,
- 15:56Speaker 2: I'm always genuinely curious if they think their love of
- 16:01Speaker 2: the school can be soured if it doesn't go right.
- 16:03Speaker 6: YEA professionally, Yeah, scared to death that it could happen
- 16:06Speaker 6: that way, because.
- 16:08Speaker 2: I'm assuming it was absolutely no doubt you're going to
- 16:10Speaker 2: be the coach. You want the job, Yeah, for sure. Yeah,
- 16:12Speaker 2: but a little bit was like, man, if this sucks
- 16:14Speaker 2: and I don't do well, then how do I even
- 16:17Speaker 2: like still love it?
- 16:18Speaker 6: Yeah? I hadn't gone away either that seven years ago. Yeah,
- 16:21Speaker 6: I mean it was a no brainer. I was in
- 16:23Speaker 6: a dream job, a good job at Washington, but when
- 16:25Speaker 6: the opportunity came, like you said, it was home. It
- 16:28Speaker 6: was what I dreamed of. I wanted to be a
- 16:29Speaker 6: razorback player, and I was never good enough at anything,
- 16:32Speaker 6: but coaching was the opportunity and I think about it
- 16:34Speaker 6: every single day. I wake up and you know, the
- 16:37Speaker 6: other part for me is I'm a fan of our
- 16:38Speaker 6: other eighteen sports, just like every other fan in Arkansas.
- 16:41Speaker 6: And then I'm also colleagues in one sport. So but no,
- 16:45Speaker 6: it was a great fear. I talked it over with
- 16:47Speaker 6: all of my family, especially my close family, like you
- 16:50Speaker 6: understand that there has never in the history been a
- 16:53Speaker 6: basketball coach retire from the University of Arkansas. And they
- 16:57Speaker 6: were like, well, what do you mean. I said, They've
- 16:59Speaker 6: all told that's me. It could be me and most
- 17:03Speaker 6: likely probably will be. Are we good with that? And
- 17:06Speaker 6: we all said yeah. I said, if I get to
- 17:08Speaker 6: be the coach here for one day, it will have
- 17:10Speaker 6: been worth it.
- 17:11Speaker 2: I mean that'd be the coolest thing, getting hired and
- 17:13Speaker 2: like getting walked into your office and like this is
- 17:15Speaker 2: now your program at your school.
- 17:18Speaker 6: Do you remember that day? Yeah. I stood right there
- 17:20Speaker 6: and looked at that view and it just washed over me.
- 17:22Speaker 6: I mean it hit me like because I'd said it
- 17:25Speaker 6: from a very young age. I wanted to be a
- 17:26Speaker 6: razorback and I was not good enough at any sport.
- 17:28Speaker 6: But then it became I want to be a razorback coach,
- 17:30Speaker 6: And when it came it hit me I stood right
- 17:32Speaker 6: there and cried by myself because of the overwhelming how
- 17:37Speaker 6: many people help me get here, how lucky I know
- 17:40Speaker 6: for everything to line up like it was. So I
- 17:43Speaker 6: don't spend one single day taking for granted how important
- 17:47Speaker 6: it is, how valuable it was. But also I try
- 17:50Speaker 6: to hit the ground running every day so I get
- 17:51Speaker 6: to be year as long as I possibly can.
- 17:53Speaker 2: So when you say you went to school here, but
- 17:56Speaker 2: you won't good enough to play for the Razorbacks, did
- 17:58Speaker 2: you play a lot of like ball on the rack?
- 18:00Speaker 6: I did dominate that. Yeah, I tried out for baseball,
- 18:03Speaker 6: But coach to Brian cut me it was the best
- 18:05Speaker 6: thing ever happened to me. I played a little baseball
- 18:07Speaker 6: at West Dark and came up here and had I
- 18:09Speaker 6: thought I had a pretty good day. I tell I
- 18:11Speaker 6: told the story coach to Brian in the room many times.
- 18:14Speaker 6: But he came walking across the diamond there and I thought,
- 18:17Speaker 6: I'm getting ready to be a Razorback. I just I
- 18:19Speaker 6: hit it good in the cage, and I picked it
- 18:20Speaker 6: pretty good in the field, and he walked up and
- 18:23Speaker 6: he put his arm around me and said, Maghbor's you're
- 18:25Speaker 6: a good boy. He said, uh, coach. Coach Crowder was right.
- 18:28Speaker 6: That was my junior college coach. Coach Crowder was right.
- 18:30Speaker 6: He said, you you really understand the game. You know
- 18:32Speaker 6: when to be and where to be, just can't quite
- 18:35Speaker 6: do it. He said, you ever thought about coaching? And
- 18:37Speaker 6: I said, yeah, this SU's my SU's my playing days.
- 18:40Speaker 6: Roll over. I'm going to go right into coaching. He
- 18:41Speaker 6: kind of patted me on the button. He goes, that's
- 18:44Speaker 6: today here we are. Yeah.
- 18:49Speaker 2: Did you think at all about trying to play ball
- 18:50Speaker 2: somewhere else when you got cut here?
- 18:52Speaker 6: No, it was Razorbacks or nothing. For me. I had
- 18:56Speaker 6: some small college offers to play basketball. It was better
- 18:58Speaker 6: at basket. I was probably a little better at baseball.
- 19:00Speaker 6: Basketball was my love. I maybe I thought about it,
- 19:04Speaker 6: but it was just it wasn't going to be the same.
- 19:06Speaker 6: If it couldn't be Razorbacks for me, that's just it
- 19:08Speaker 6: wasn't going to be anything. Who were the guys that
- 19:11Speaker 6: for you? Because for me it was Oliver Miller, Todd Day,
- 19:14Speaker 6: Lee Mayberry like my young years and super instrumental in
- 19:18Speaker 6: me being a Razorback diehard fan. Like, when I say
- 19:20Speaker 6: that to you, who are those guys? The other Triplets,
- 19:22Speaker 6: Marvin delf ron Berg, Sidney mont Creef, and really that
- 19:25Speaker 6: whole team. So like, if you come in my my
- 19:27Speaker 6: razorback room in my house, I've got all those guys jerseys,
- 19:30Speaker 6: I've got balls, I've got sweat bands I've collected over
- 19:34Speaker 6: the years. Those were the people that I've stayed up
- 19:36Speaker 6: late to watch the replays of, you know, the tape
- 19:39Speaker 6: delays before we had VHS and all those different things.
- 19:43Speaker 6: So those were those were my guys on on the basketball.
- 19:45Speaker 6: But Ben Cowen's in football, that Orange Bowl team, Rolling Sales,
- 19:50Speaker 6: Ron Calcagney, Dan Hampton, you know, Kevin Mcgrenold's and baseball.
- 19:55Speaker 6: Those were more when I was starting to get older
- 19:57Speaker 6: and wanting to be here. But I've a number of
- 20:01Speaker 6: coaches and players, and you know, now every sport.
- 20:05Speaker 1: When you started coaches, you ever feel because I was
- 20:07Speaker 1: talking about this with my wife, like, you know, I
- 20:09Speaker 1: always say I can do it, but deep inside, I'm like,
- 20:11Speaker 1: I don't know if I can do it. Yeah, when
- 20:12Speaker 1: you first started, did you kind of feel like?
- 20:14Speaker 6: Yeah, every day? Every day. My first job was a
- 20:18Speaker 6: swim coach at Bintonville High School. I missed a meeting
- 20:22Speaker 6: early in the summer because I didn't have an email
- 20:23Speaker 6: account set up yet and they had sent out emails
- 20:26Speaker 6: for all these coaches to come to this meeting. Well
- 20:27Speaker 6: I didn't know about it. Well, they made me the
- 20:30Speaker 6: swim coach. Well, first you have any experience, I can't swim. Okay,
- 20:35Speaker 6: So not only did I not have any experience as
- 20:37Speaker 6: a swim coach, I didn't have the ability to even
- 20:39Speaker 6: jump in the water and do anything. Yes, yeah, yeah.
- 20:42Speaker 6: But fortunately at Bentonville they had a person hired through
- 20:45Speaker 6: Walmart who did all the instructing and I just needed
- 20:47Speaker 6: to be the school of liaison to show up. And
- 20:50Speaker 6: so they said, hey, yeah, you know you'd be there
- 20:52Speaker 6: at four thirty and it's year round. I'm like going, well,
- 20:54Speaker 6: I can't do it at four thirty. I got basketball
- 20:56Speaker 6: practice at three thirty, and they said no the other
- 20:58Speaker 6: four thirty because that's when swimmers swim. So I was
- 21:03Speaker 6: at the swim n auditorium and my first swim meet
- 21:06Speaker 6: I ever saw. I actually coach so every day and
- 21:09Speaker 6: still to this day, I always worry I'm doing it wrong.
- 21:12Speaker 6: I'm always worry we're talking about imposter syndrome. Before we
- 21:14Speaker 6: go on here, I certainly have had that a number
- 21:16Speaker 6: of times. And you know, when I first got to
- 21:18Speaker 6: be a head coach, but one of my first coaching
- 21:20Speaker 6: jobs was I was coaching is Tarvanerber, who's won over
- 21:23Speaker 6: a thousand games, and I'm going to game one, you know,
- 21:25Speaker 6: So I still have that. I hope that's normal. I
- 21:29Speaker 6: don't know that it is. But for me, my greatest
- 21:31Speaker 6: fear is always that I'm not doing it right or
- 21:34Speaker 6: maybe I can't, but try not to let that show.
- 21:36Speaker 6: I tried to put on a confident smile and do
- 21:38Speaker 6: the best I can. But it's a scary profession, but
- 21:41Speaker 6: it's fun.
- 21:41Speaker 2: Were you a decent swim coach even though I was an.
- 21:43Speaker 6: Unbelievable swim coach? Yeah?
- 21:46Speaker 2: Stay championship, No way, that's hilarious.
- 21:50Speaker 6: I got it sitting right over here at some point. Yeah,
- 21:52Speaker 6: here it is.
- 21:53Speaker 2: And what do you credit that to?
- 21:54Speaker 6: The unbelievable swimmers that were at that school at that
- 21:57Speaker 6: particular time. Messing them up?
- 22:00Speaker 2: But still okay, But that there is, uh, there's a
- 22:03Speaker 2: skill to not messing something good up. Yeah, just as
- 22:06Speaker 2: much as there is making something good that maybe isn't
- 22:08Speaker 2: as good as possibly could be. Sure you didn't mess
- 22:11Speaker 2: it up.
- 22:12Speaker 4: No.
- 22:12Speaker 6: I what I did. I went in and you know,
- 22:14Speaker 6: it was kind of an Olympic sport. It wasn't one
- 22:17Speaker 6: that got a lot of newspaper coverage. But I've been
- 22:19Speaker 6: coaching basketball. So I called my newspaper writers and I said, hey,
- 22:22Speaker 6: have you not followed the swim team. They're amazing. We'd
- 22:24Speaker 6: won state championships and this kid's going to be in
- 22:26Speaker 6: the Junior Olympics. So I got in publicity and I
- 22:29Speaker 6: brought it kind of to be. I went out. Here's
- 22:31Speaker 6: what I did at the school too. I went and
- 22:32Speaker 6: I bought the coolest sweats suit that anybody had on campus,
- 22:36Speaker 6: and I gave to our swimmers, and every other sport
- 22:38Speaker 6: waned them, but but they couldn't have them because swim
- 22:41Speaker 6: team had them, and we made swimming kind of cool.
- 22:43Speaker 6: It's kind of cool deal.
- 22:44Speaker 2: So when did you get to stop coaching swim? When
- 22:46Speaker 2: did you retire as a champion swim coach. I'm not
- 22:49Speaker 2: sure it was a retirement. I think it was they
- 22:51Speaker 2: found somebody that drove the bus better than I. It
- 22:54Speaker 2: was when I got to be the head coach of
- 22:57Speaker 2: another team that was kind of a you know, it
- 22:59Speaker 2: was very time consuming. It It really was four point
- 23:02Speaker 2: thirty in the morning until seven in the morning every
- 23:04Speaker 2: day of the year. And it was a thousand dollars stipend,
- 23:08Speaker 2: so it was not the most lucrative gig. That was
- 23:11Speaker 2: the whole pay for that job.
- 23:13Speaker 6: Yeah, dollars one thousand for that number of hours that many.
- 23:17Speaker 6: So I when I got to be the head coach
- 23:19Speaker 6: of the girls basketball team the eighties, said we need
- 23:21Speaker 6: somebody that can do this a little better than you are,
- 23:24Speaker 6: and I gladly relinquished my title to somebody that actually
- 23:29Speaker 6: had been to a swim meet before I had.
- 23:31Speaker 2: So whenever you're an assistant basketball coach at the school,
- 23:35Speaker 2: was your dream to be a collegiate coach or was
- 23:38Speaker 2: it to just be the best high school coach in
- 23:40Speaker 2: the state.
- 23:40Speaker 6: Yeah? Not initially, because I didn't have it, not played,
- 23:43Speaker 6: I didn't know for sure how it would go. Initially,
- 23:46Speaker 6: I just thought I wanted to go be the high
- 23:47Speaker 6: school coach at Greenwood, Arkansas. I wanted to go back
- 23:49Speaker 6: home and do that. But I had a heart attack
- 23:52Speaker 6: at twenty nine, a genetic defect in my heart, and
- 23:55Speaker 6: at twenty nine I was the high school coach at
- 23:58Speaker 6: Cabot and when it happened, and that that was when
- 24:00Speaker 6: it changed me to wanting to be a college coach.
- 24:02Speaker 2: So what did you do differently than so you want
- 24:05Speaker 2: to be a college coach, you go get a master's or.
- 24:07Speaker 6: No, no, you don't have to have a master's to
- 24:09Speaker 6: coach D one. I probably didn't need to go to
- 24:12Speaker 6: any more school as it was with my last GPAs.
- 24:15Speaker 6: So I just got to know coach Blair really well.
- 24:19Speaker 6: A lot of people said, you know, you need to
- 24:20Speaker 6: branch out in network and get to know a lot
- 24:22Speaker 6: of coaches, but I had a really wise popaul one
- 24:25Speaker 6: time that said it's okay to put all your eggs
- 24:28Speaker 6: in one basket as long as you watch thine basket. Yeah,
- 24:31Speaker 6: you know. So I just got to know coach Blair
- 24:34Speaker 6: and I volunteered at his camps. I volunteered every chance
- 24:36Speaker 6: I got, and every time he had a job opening
- 24:39Speaker 6: and I said, I'll do it. I don't care what
- 24:40Speaker 6: it pays. So finally he had a job that paid
- 24:42Speaker 6: fourteen thousand dollars. I was making seventy two thousand dollars
- 24:46Speaker 6: as a high school coach, and I said I'll take it.
- 24:48Speaker 6: And he spent the next three hours trying to talk
- 24:50Speaker 6: me out of it. He said, I said, well, you
- 24:51Speaker 6: already offered me the job, coach, So I took the
- 24:53Speaker 6: pay cut and jumped into it.
- 24:55Speaker 2: What was the job?
- 24:56Speaker 6: I was called Director of Basketball Operations, which is a big,
- 24:59Speaker 6: big title. I should have been his diet coke guy.
- 25:02Speaker 6: That was my first job, was to make sure he
- 25:04Speaker 6: had diet coke at practice. So, like I had been taught,
- 25:07Speaker 6: I said, okay, coach, do you want that in a cup?
- 25:09Speaker 6: Do you want it in a can? Do you want
- 25:10Speaker 6: it out of a fountain? Do you want crushed dice?
- 25:13Speaker 6: Do you want sonic ised? Do you want cube dice?
- 25:15Speaker 6: What do you want?
- 25:15Speaker 2: So?
- 25:16Speaker 6: I did the best job I could at being that
- 25:17Speaker 6: until he let me drive him around, till he let
- 25:20Speaker 6: me do a little stuff more and more and more
- 25:22Speaker 6: and more. So, uh, that was my first job, glorified
- 25:25Speaker 6: diet coke go coach.
- 25:26Speaker 1: The heart attack though, at such a young age and
- 25:28Speaker 1: you go into a career where you're just going to
- 25:31Speaker 1: be yelling out the whole time.
- 25:33Speaker 6: How do you manage that my heart rate doesn't get
- 25:35Speaker 6: above one hundred and twenty any like they've had me
- 25:37Speaker 6: on monitors? I just I think because of the heart attack,
- 25:40Speaker 6: I had this perspective on maybe it's not as big
- 25:43Speaker 6: a deal as everybody. I mean, it is stressful, don't
- 25:46Speaker 6: get me wrong, but I don't stress about it. I
- 25:49Speaker 6: think because I've had the heart attacks and that it
- 25:52Speaker 6: has helped me try to be as calm as I can.
- 25:54Speaker 6: A lot of my players will say, you know, I'm
- 25:57Speaker 6: calm because coach is calm. I'm he if he I
- 26:00Speaker 6: can be calm. So I hope that's turned out to
- 26:02Speaker 6: be a positive thing. It was a genetic thing too,
- 26:05Speaker 6: so we got it under control. I'm not really worried
- 26:07Speaker 6: about it happening again. My doctors have all said, I
- 26:10Speaker 6: think in a nice way, it's gonna be something else
- 26:12Speaker 6: that you can get hit by a truck, or you're
- 26:14Speaker 6: gonna you're gonna have a play something, you know something.
- 26:16Speaker 6: I'm like, thanks, it's not gonna be my heart. But
- 26:18Speaker 6: that moment changed me. At twenty nine, you realize life's
- 26:21Speaker 6: that short because he literally told me, he said, if
- 26:23Speaker 6: you'd have been asleep, I think you would have died
- 26:25Speaker 6: because you might not have really known it was happening.
- 26:27Speaker 6: And they call it the widow maker vow because of
- 26:30Speaker 6: that reason. So I was lucky. I've always been right time,
- 26:33Speaker 6: right place, guys, so obviously that one was one of those.
- 26:35Speaker 2: What was your highlight, your highest moment in high school coaching,
- 26:40Speaker 2: BEF high school guys.
- 26:41Speaker 6: Before you left, I had a team. It's kind of
- 26:44Speaker 6: a three three year window. I had a team that
- 26:47Speaker 6: was finished one in twenty four, won one game, and
- 26:50Speaker 6: the game we won, believe it or not, we hit
- 26:51Speaker 6: a jump shot at the end of the third quarter
- 26:53Speaker 6: to win it because nobody scored in the fourth. Believe
- 26:55Speaker 6: it or not. That team played for the state championship
- 26:58Speaker 6: two years later.
- 26:58Speaker 2: The same most of the same crew.
- 27:00Speaker 6: It was the same crew. We just got better and
- 27:02Speaker 6: better and we stuck. We had a movie or two,
- 27:03Speaker 6: don't get me wrong, but that group that was probably
- 27:07Speaker 6: the pinnacle of high school coaching for me.
- 27:10Speaker 2: And then when you what was your first collegiate job
- 27:13Speaker 2: here with coach Blair, it was it's so but then
- 27:15Speaker 2: you have to leave again, right, Yeah, you have to
- 27:17Speaker 2: leave because it's a job. It's a journeyman job, it is.
- 27:19Speaker 2: But with the idea hopefully of coming back to.
- 27:21Speaker 6: That was the plan. Yeah, and I came back again.
- 27:23Speaker 6: In between, So I started with coach Blair. I went
- 27:25Speaker 6: to Tulsa. I followed that coach to Colorado. I came
- 27:28Speaker 6: back to Arkansas for another time. I went to Xavier.
- 27:31Speaker 6: I went to Washington. That's where I got my first
- 27:34Speaker 6: head coaching job. And then when this one came open,
- 27:37Speaker 6: it was everything I could do to come back home.
- 27:39Speaker 6: But yeah, you knew, you know you're gonna be I
- 27:41Speaker 6: moved five times in five years. I moved eight times,
- 27:43Speaker 6: you know, and you know it's one of those deals
- 27:45Speaker 6: that you know you have to do that to at
- 27:47Speaker 6: the end hopefully be able to still be somewhere for
- 27:49Speaker 6: a long time.
- 27:50Speaker 2: When did you realize that this was like the thing
- 27:52Speaker 2: you're pretty good at.
- 27:54Speaker 6: Well, there's a picture of it over there. I was
- 27:56Speaker 6: an assistant coach at Xavier. We had a young lady
- 27:59Speaker 6: who missed a couple of layups to go to the
- 28:00Speaker 6: final four. Smoked them mean wide open, and for something
- 28:05Speaker 6: in me, rather than be upset about miss, I sprinted
- 28:08Speaker 6: onto the court and I picked her up off the
- 28:10Speaker 6: floor and I just hugged her and shielded her. And
- 28:14Speaker 6: I still to this day don't know what made me
- 28:15Speaker 6: do it, but that was I knew. After looking back
- 28:17Speaker 6: on I said, I'm supposed to be a coach if
- 28:19Speaker 6: I if something in my body reacted, this is what
- 28:22Speaker 6: I'm supposed to be doing. It's not. I was still
- 28:25Speaker 6: an assistant. I almost quit coaching. I had tried to
- 28:28Speaker 6: become a head coach. I was an assistant for fourteen years.
- 28:31Speaker 6: I was at Xavier at a spot where I thought
- 28:32Speaker 6: I was going to get the job and I didn't,
- 28:34Speaker 6: and I almost just, you know, decided I was going
- 28:38Speaker 6: to get out of coaching and come home and sell
- 28:40Speaker 6: drugs and flip house pharmaceuticals, pharmaceuticals there. I was going
- 28:47Speaker 6: to sell pharmaceuticals and flip houses. I really thought about
- 28:51Speaker 6: it for a while, but I took that job at
- 28:54Speaker 6: Washington that ended up leading now, and so you know,
- 28:58Speaker 6: it's one of those jobs where you have to kind
- 28:59Speaker 6: of think that way.
- 29:00Speaker 2: What's the difference in that we don't understand of Okay,
- 29:03Speaker 2: you're the number one assistant, but now you're the head coach.
- 29:07Speaker 2: Whenever they move you up at Washington and you're the
- 29:08Speaker 2: head guy. Yeah, immediately, what did you not know you
- 29:12Speaker 2: were going to have to be?
- 29:13Speaker 6: Well, you've got to make the decisions instead of the suggestions.
- 29:18Speaker 6: You know, all those great suggestions I'd had as an
- 29:20Speaker 6: assistant coach, and I was like, oh, he's not doing that.
- 29:23Speaker 6: You know, why aren't they using my idea? The amount
- 29:27Speaker 6: of decisions you had to make on a daily basis,
- 29:29Speaker 6: and not only the amount of it, but the number
- 29:31Speaker 6: of people it affected. Like if, like today, if I
- 29:34Speaker 6: want to change practice time, I've got to alert fifty
- 29:36Speaker 6: nine people, and then they have families and they have
- 29:40Speaker 6: people they have to alert. I had never thought about
- 29:43Speaker 6: that aspect of having to be the person that makes
- 29:45Speaker 6: a decision that trickles down and affects those many people.
- 29:49Speaker 6: And then the other thing that was, it's going to
- 29:51Speaker 6: sound really petty, but I was at Washington the friday
- 29:55Speaker 6: before I was the assistant coach. We went out on
- 29:56Speaker 6: a little out excursion and I had like a little
- 29:59Speaker 6: super suv, mini suv or whatever. Every kid's trying to
- 30:03Speaker 6: pile in there with me because I was cool and
- 30:04Speaker 6: had the cool music and whatever. I have like ten
- 30:06Speaker 6: people trying to get in my car. The next friday,
- 30:09Speaker 6: I was the head coach and I had the big
- 30:12Speaker 6: suv and we were gonna go out to a dinner
- 30:14Speaker 6: to celebrate, and nobody wanted to ride with me and
- 30:17Speaker 6: I was the same guy, but your job had changed,
- 30:22Speaker 6: so like that was hard on me for a while,
- 30:24Speaker 6: Like because you're not gonna be liked all the time,
- 30:27Speaker 6: and their decisions are tough, and it's gonna have you're
- 30:30Speaker 6: gonna make somebody mad probably and that boy, I struggle
- 30:33Speaker 6: with that, And I'm not telling you I don't still
- 30:34Speaker 6: struggle with that a little bit today because that's just
- 30:36Speaker 6: that's hard. But the two big things we're having to
- 30:39Speaker 6: make all these decisions and learning that you can run
- 30:41Speaker 6: out of energy to make decisions. It's why the presidents
- 30:44Speaker 6: don't pick out their own clothes or where they're eating,
- 30:47Speaker 6: because you can exhaust yourself of your energy of making
- 30:50Speaker 6: decisions on stuff that's trivial.
- 30:52Speaker 2: The last ten years or so, seemingly from you know,
- 30:55Speaker 2: ten thousand feet up, the recruiting has changed. It's seemingly
- 30:59Speaker 2: so much more more than it had in any any
- 31:01Speaker 2: clip of time, because again all the rules have change,
- 31:04Speaker 2: from the portal to nil to how much adapting have
- 31:08Speaker 2: you had to do? How much changing have you had
- 31:09Speaker 2: to do just in your day to day ceoing and coaching.
- 31:13Speaker 6: A lot you have to scrap what you did two
- 31:15Speaker 6: years ago. It literally changes every day now, I mean
- 31:18Speaker 6: the price of recruiting, and I don't mean the dollar man,
- 31:21Speaker 6: we're not talking about nil. I'm just saying the things
- 31:23Speaker 6: you have to do to stay on that cutting edge
- 31:27Speaker 6: to be attractive to the best players in the country.
- 31:30Speaker 6: I have to have people surrounding me because I'm not
- 31:32Speaker 6: the one that can keep up with what's cool and
- 31:34Speaker 6: what trend. How are we going to communicate with these people?
- 31:36Speaker 6: So I've got to employ an unbelievable staff of people
- 31:40Speaker 6: who are up on that, and then I just have
- 31:42Speaker 6: to be available. As long as I make myself available
- 31:44Speaker 6: to them to do whatever they tell me to do,
- 31:46Speaker 6: I can stay in the thick of it. But it's
- 31:48Speaker 6: a complete one hundred and eighty degree shift from what
- 31:51Speaker 6: it was two years ago.
- 31:52Speaker 2: Final three questions. You have a lot of books in
- 31:55Speaker 2: this office. They're everywhere.
- 31:56Speaker 6: Yeah, so even your book. Yeah.
- 31:59Speaker 2: I think that was a setup.
- 31:59Speaker 4: There.
- 32:00Speaker 2: I tell you why they get the set up. Coach
- 32:01Speaker 2: a interesting I have theory about this. You walk in
- 32:04Speaker 2: and obviously either coach is well read or has just
- 32:07Speaker 2: spent a lot of money on books. It could be
- 32:09Speaker 2: either one. I know people have done both. Okay, not
- 32:11Speaker 2: gonna hate so. But again, there's so many books in
- 32:15Speaker 2: this office that I feel like you've probably read a
- 32:19Speaker 2: few of them. Now, why I'm looking at your there's
- 32:23Speaker 2: four books on your desk. There's five hundred around here,
- 32:25Speaker 2: just playing the numbers game, analytics data. What are the
- 32:28Speaker 2: odds that my book would be on your desk randomly
- 32:32Speaker 2: when I show up?
- 32:32Speaker 6: Well, it's not random because I want you to sign
- 32:34Speaker 6: it before you leave. But it was in there, like
- 32:36Speaker 6: it was just sitting on your desk. It was in
- 32:37Speaker 6: the stack when you guys got here. It was in
- 32:42Speaker 6: my stack with all the other white books. So you
- 32:44Speaker 6: can ask anybody.
- 32:45Speaker 2: You're a price tag on it? But today at half
- 32:47Speaker 2: price books looks like the receipts.
- 32:48Speaker 4: Yea.
- 32:49Speaker 6: Every book in here has been read, and anybody that's
- 32:52Speaker 6: really every book in here has been read. Anybody that's
- 32:54Speaker 6: around me can tell you the story about me and
- 32:55Speaker 6: behind reading. But if they're on my desk, I'm in
- 32:58Speaker 6: this process of reading them. If they're in that book
- 33:01Speaker 6: bag over there on the corner, they are my favorite books.
- 33:04Speaker 6: If they are stacked under here, they're the ones I'm
- 33:05Speaker 6: going to give anybody in this room if y'all want
- 33:07Speaker 6: to copy a speed of trust. I buy every copy
- 33:09Speaker 6: I can find in a hand themount to anybody that
- 33:10Speaker 6: comes in here and asks me about reading. I was
- 33:12Speaker 6: an awful reader at the age of forty, and I
- 33:15Speaker 6: took a test online and I read at the eighth
- 33:17Speaker 6: grade reading level. And that's embarrassing. And I wanted to
- 33:20Speaker 6: become a better reader. So I started reading, and I
- 33:22Speaker 6: got better and better and better. I got tore. I
- 33:24Speaker 6: could read nine hundred words a minute, and with comprehension.
- 33:27Speaker 6: So that's when I started pouring through every copy of
- 33:30Speaker 6: everything I could ever read. I'm not that fast anymore
- 33:33Speaker 6: because now I take a for every book I read,
- 33:35Speaker 6: I write at least ten pages, and I go by
- 33:38Speaker 6: alternative back and forth. But your book has been read
- 33:41Speaker 6: since I was coming to Nashville a couple of years ago,
- 33:44Speaker 6: when we were going to connect. That was when I
- 33:46Speaker 6: got a copy of that book. And I want you write
- 33:49Speaker 6: a book. You write so much I've had I've had
- 33:52Speaker 6: a lot of people say, and I think I will
- 33:53Speaker 6: when I retire and I'm not coaching. I've got a
- 33:55Speaker 6: bunch of pieces that I think we could write into
- 33:57Speaker 6: a book. Right now, I've written twenty probably probably two
- 34:02Speaker 6: thousand pages worth of stuff. I had a newsletter I
- 34:05Speaker 6: shared that went out to seventy five thousand coaches that
- 34:07Speaker 6: went out weekly. I wrote in those things. I think
- 34:10Speaker 6: I could probably put it together. It's a lot of
- 34:12Speaker 6: other people's thoughts that I've kind of made into my own,
- 34:15Speaker 6: and summer stories about my pap Paul. That's I think
- 34:18Speaker 6: the book that I'll publish is my popon neighbors' stories
- 34:21Speaker 6: because he was such a wise man without an education.
- 34:25Speaker 6: And then I think I will write a book someday.
- 34:28Speaker 6: It's just not something right now that I want to do,
- 34:30Speaker 6: but I think I will in time.
- 34:31Speaker 2: Yeah, it sucks to write it. It sucks. It's awesome.
- 34:33Speaker 6: Three So you were thinking three questions about the books.
- 34:36Speaker 6: But yeah, everything in here has been read and it's
- 34:37Speaker 6: all coded and you can talk to my administrative assistant
- 34:40Speaker 6: down there.
- 34:41Speaker 2: It does Dewey decimal system in here. You pull the
- 34:42Speaker 2: cards out.
- 34:43Speaker 6: We tried. We tried that, and we had stacks everywhere.
- 34:46Speaker 6: It was going to be leadership, it was going to
- 34:48Speaker 6: be body language, it was gonna be all these different
- 34:50Speaker 6: and then finally I just said, forget it. Just put
- 34:53Speaker 6: all the blue books together, all the red books, together,
- 34:55Speaker 6: all the yellow books together, because I do remember what
- 34:57Speaker 6: color books are, and that's why I remember that's a
- 35:00Speaker 6: yellow cover book or that's a green box. Plus it
- 35:02Speaker 6: looks cool. It just looks it looks a little better. Yeah,
- 35:05Speaker 6: there's a little discrepancies around, but I'm colored bline. Yeah yeah, yeah.
- 35:09Speaker 2: There's also like.
- 35:10Speaker 1: A DVD collection here, and I see you know some
- 35:12Speaker 1: movie pictures here. You got Star Wars, Bulldom, correct, Rocky.
- 35:18Speaker 1: What's your favorite let's say sports movie? And then movie
- 35:22Speaker 1: in general?
- 35:23Speaker 6: A few good men. Number one. You may not know
- 35:26Speaker 6: this about me, but I do have my top one
- 35:27Speaker 6: thousand movies ranked in order on IMDb. You can look
- 35:30Speaker 6: it up when we leave one through thousand. What do
- 35:32Speaker 6: you mean how do we look that up? I can
- 35:34Speaker 6: pull it up on it's like a web page.
- 35:36Speaker 2: Wait, we can go on. We can find it on
- 35:37Speaker 2: the internet.
- 35:38Speaker 6: Yeah, right now, what's on IMDb dot com. It's this huge.
- 35:42Speaker 2: Now I know what that site is. Coach, I'm saying,
- 35:44Speaker 2: but how do we find yours top? My neighbors you
- 35:46Speaker 2: heard of it, bones and you just went on so
- 35:47Speaker 2: you have like an account.
- 35:49Speaker 6: Here's what happened. I'm in Seattle. This came up in
- 35:52Speaker 6: an interview that I had my top thousand movies ranked
- 35:54Speaker 6: and somebody said, I don't believe you. I said, here
- 35:57Speaker 6: you go. I have them typed out. They're in order.
- 35:59Speaker 6: They're my favorite list. It's been well document it's been
- 36:01Speaker 6: well thought through a few good men. Number one, it's
- 36:04Speaker 6: never been touched. The top ten has moved around some
- 36:07Speaker 6: never been touched, even by Forrest Gump. No, Forst Gump.
- 36:09Speaker 6: I think is eleven. Uh, maybe slid to fourteen. I'll
- 36:13Speaker 6: check when we when we but we do this as
- 36:15Speaker 6: bar bets. I'll tell people to name a movie and
- 36:17Speaker 6: I can tell you where it falls within my top
- 36:19Speaker 6: thousand within a few. But it is, it's ranked. And
- 36:22Speaker 6: when I so, somebody in Seattle heard about it, and
- 36:24Speaker 6: IMDb reached out to me and said, would you please
- 36:26Speaker 6: publish your lists?
- 36:27Speaker 2: Oh that's cool.
- 36:28Speaker 6: So it's out. It's out there. I'm a published. I'm
- 36:30Speaker 6: I guess I am published now that I think about it.
- 36:32Speaker 2: Yeah, sports movie on the internet though sport.
- 36:34Speaker 6: We found it. We found it. Oh, I got it.
- 36:35Speaker 2: Hunt for October's number two, Hunt forre Ad October, The
- 36:38Speaker 2: Silence of the Lambs, number three, Hoosiers.
- 36:40Speaker 6: Four, that's my favorite sports movie.
- 36:42Speaker 2: Oh brother, we're out. There's five, Moneyball, six, Top Gun seven,
- 36:44Speaker 2: I'm gonna do all thousands. You gots fast forward for
- 36:46Speaker 2: a little bit.
- 36:47Speaker 6: I'll tell you what one thousand is.
- 36:49Speaker 2: Mama Mia zero eight original Top Gun. Yes, I've never
- 36:53Speaker 2: seen the other one, the new one sending the new one. Yes,
- 36:55Speaker 2: I'm seen.
- 36:56Speaker 6: It is a good purple rain. Ten.
- 36:57Speaker 2: That's good. Shawn Shake eleven, it was kind of low eleven. Yeah,
- 37:00Speaker 2: I think same year Shawshaker. Forest Gump? Ye?
- 37:05Speaker 6: What is Forest Gump twelve?
- 37:06Speaker 2: Oh?
- 37:07Speaker 6: So what happened was Moneyball moved up so that one
- 37:10Speaker 6: moved down one?
- 37:11Speaker 1: And I think you're referring to I think Forrest Gump
- 37:13Speaker 1: Knocking showshnak out or was it the well?
- 37:15Speaker 2: Those two plus what's the Royal? Which is oh, pul fiction.
- 37:22Speaker 1: All the best pictures and I think one of I
- 37:24Speaker 1: don't know which.
- 37:24Speaker 6: One, but this is my lists. It's not the best
- 37:27Speaker 6: movies of all time? What I what my criteria was this?
- 37:30Speaker 6: If one was on TBS and one was on T
- 37:32Speaker 6: and T. What am I watching? And I Few good Men?
- 37:34Speaker 6: Is that movie for me? I will watch it. Start
- 37:38Speaker 6: hit your thirties, keep going, You're gonna get to it
- 37:40Speaker 6: prece may I love hitch.
- 37:41Speaker 1: Shield, The Dreams, Field the Dreams, The.
- 37:43Speaker 6: Field, the Dreams. It's pretty high. It's pretty high. And
- 37:45Speaker 6: so like I have these arguments people and everybody goes, oh,
- 37:47Speaker 6: that's too low, and I said, we'll make your list.
- 37:49Speaker 6: That's because you'll be surprised how quick you get to eighty.
- 37:53Speaker 6: Like there's good movies in the hundreds on this list,
- 37:57Speaker 6: and I still have. Now this is not the most updated.
- 38:00Speaker 6: I have a working living document that every time I
- 38:02Speaker 6: watch a movie, I put it into the ring.
- 38:04Speaker 1: What's the last movie that you watched that made the list?
- 38:07Speaker 6: Last movie I watched to be into the list? What
- 38:12Speaker 6: was the last It was the Oppenheimer. Oh yeah, I
- 38:15Speaker 6: made at the top an hosand list. Well, no, because
- 38:17Speaker 6: I'm I don't want to seem really weird. But it's
- 38:20Speaker 6: over thirty seven hundred. Now, Oh that's just.
- 38:23Speaker 2: Are you I have? I soa. I take medicine for
- 38:25Speaker 2: my OCD being a little lot of control. Sometimes are
- 38:27Speaker 2: you OCD?
- 38:27Speaker 6: Probably? But it's not medicated?
- 38:29Speaker 2: Okay, maybe you should, it's my point.
- 38:31Speaker 6: I have some can we try? It's one of those
- 38:35Speaker 6: ones that I could try and it wouldn't.
- 38:36Speaker 2: It wouldn't affect you at all, partly part of the deals.
- 38:39Speaker 6: I don't sleep a lot. I never did, even prior
- 38:41Speaker 6: to having a young family and all that.
- 38:42Speaker 2: But I wonder why you have a heart attack, coach,
- 38:44Speaker 2: I don't know. That was before, that was.
- 38:48Speaker 6: Before post doc Ergo propter, HOWK.
- 38:50Speaker 2: That's like I was linked in three months and I
- 38:52Speaker 2: never sleep, but I can't figure out my heart's breaking down.
- 38:56Speaker 2: A couple more of these movies. I'm only at one,
- 38:58Speaker 2: like I'm in the hundreds. We'll come on one eleven
- 39:00Speaker 2: is a Gladiator.
- 39:01Speaker 6: Oh that's a great which is a great movie. But
- 39:03Speaker 6: be you surprised? How quick? Now? I also have my
- 39:06Speaker 6: top fifty seven thousand songs ranked in order. Wow wow,
- 39:10Speaker 6: on the playlist number one, Well, go to hey, go
- 39:12Speaker 6: to billboard dot com. They're all they're all up there
- 39:15Speaker 6: that he's a published I'm not on that one. But
- 39:17Speaker 6: that's what I did during COVID was I made a
- 39:19Speaker 6: music list and a playlist of all those songs. Wow yeah,
- 39:23Speaker 6: And number one is sweet Child of Mine.
- 39:25Speaker 2: Oh, let's go.
- 39:27Speaker 6: I know, I know, I get. I get ridiculed for
- 39:29Speaker 6: it an awful lot. What's wrong with what's wrong with
- 39:31Speaker 6: switch oil of mine? It was it was my favorite song.
- 39:33Speaker 6: I'm not saying it's the best.
- 39:35Speaker 2: Song, and it's not. You're right, it's not any means
- 39:37Speaker 2: it's not the best song, but it's not even their
- 39:39Speaker 2: best song. Yeah, like I had of got on like
- 39:41Speaker 2: November rains, but it's right. List, it's definitely your I
- 39:45Speaker 2: do have a list.
- 39:45Speaker 6: Bring me your top fift seven thousand. I don't. I don't.
- 39:49Speaker 2: I'll pass out. I have a heart attack before I
- 39:50Speaker 2: get to thousand, get to one hundred. But I got
- 39:52Speaker 2: like I've done like top twenty five, Like I know
- 39:54Speaker 2: my top five, which is like blue Ice crying in
- 39:57Speaker 2: the rain, Stop this train, John Mayer, ain't no sunshine,
- 40:01Speaker 2: Bill Withers, like I can probably get to twenty Matt
- 40:04Speaker 2: Stell And what's that one that goes in there? Tom,
- 40:07Speaker 2: I pray for you, for you, that's number four. Yeah,
- 40:10Speaker 2: I know it's fivey seven nineteen. Check it, yeah, I
- 40:14Speaker 2: just know.
- 40:14Speaker 6: Check it right now? Check it out?
- 40:16Speaker 2: Okay, well how about that? Have you seen it?
- 40:18Speaker 6: Okay?
- 40:18Speaker 2: What I haven't read the book that you pass out?
- 40:20Speaker 2: And I like to read. What is the book? The
- 40:22Speaker 2: Sound of Time, Speed of Trust, Okay, have you ever
- 40:26Speaker 2: do you have a bunch of copies in Yeah, okay,
- 40:28Speaker 2: I'm gonna take one.
- 40:29Speaker 4: Have you ever?
- 40:29Speaker 2: Have you ever seen Man on the Moon?
- 40:31Speaker 6: Man on the Moon? Yeah?
- 40:32Speaker 2: About Andy Coffman.
- 40:33Speaker 6: Oh no, I'd love to see it.
- 40:34Speaker 2: So is it a movie?
- 40:35Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 40:36Speaker 2: Yeah, Andy Coffin died before I knew. Oh. I read
- 40:39Speaker 2: Shift Your Mind. That's a really good one.
- 40:40Speaker 6: It's really good. He's a great guy.
- 40:44Speaker 2: Do you know who I was hanging out with on
- 40:46Speaker 2: zoom the other day was Malcolm Gladewell, No, kidd, we
- 40:48Speaker 2: did a project together.
- 40:49Speaker 6: I can't believe it. I saw a bunch of them
- 40:51Speaker 6: all over there.
- 40:52Speaker 2: Yeah, he's he was.
- 40:53Speaker 1: How cool are you guys?
- 40:54Speaker 3: What is for interesting?
- 40:56Speaker 6: All of his books are one that I pass and share,
- 40:59Speaker 6: every single one of them that he has.
- 41:01Speaker 2: Yeah, I geeked out and I get but we both
- 41:03Speaker 2: get to be around cool people all the time. But
- 41:04Speaker 2: there's some people and for me it's always like old
- 41:07Speaker 2: school razorbacks and authors, and I'm always like, man, you're
- 41:13Speaker 2: like Malcolm ladwa I just like stare at him.
- 41:16Speaker 6: Yeah. The mind of the people like Gladwell that write
- 41:19Speaker 6: like that and the freakonomics people that blow me away
- 41:22Speaker 6: that the way they think they'll know. Harari a new
- 41:24Speaker 6: writer that's out that wrote Sapiens.
- 41:27Speaker 2: I read Sapiens. It took me a while because that
- 41:28Speaker 2: book is huge. What was crazy to me about, say,
- 41:30Speaker 2: we'll geet out with each other for a second, Yeah, Sapiens.
- 41:32Speaker 2: What was crazy was when they talked about the humans
- 41:34Speaker 2: that would survive though, the first ones that could stand
- 41:36Speaker 2: because they could see because they were on all fours, right,
- 41:38Speaker 2: and that we were all on all fours. But the
- 41:39Speaker 2: ones that really thrived are the ones that could stand
- 41:42Speaker 2: on two because they lifted and had higher vision.
- 41:44Speaker 6: Farther on the horizon. Crazy, And it's why we have
- 41:47Speaker 6: It's why when you hear something rustling in the woods,
- 41:50Speaker 6: if you better, you better assume it's a lion and
- 41:52Speaker 6: not the wind. We still have those.
- 41:55Speaker 2: Our brain, Our brain goes to warts a lion in Arkansas. Yeah, yeah, man,
- 41:59Speaker 2: iver lines are everywhere.
- 42:01Speaker 6: I got him out in the wild.
- 42:04Speaker 2: So I'm gonna read. I'm going to read that book.
- 42:06Speaker 2: And then you watch, uh, I watch The Man on
- 42:08Speaker 2: the Moon because it's a it's Coffin true story, but
- 42:11Speaker 2: you know who anddy Coffin is Oh.
- 42:12Speaker 6: I remember when Jerry Lawler slapped him on the Yes.
- 42:15Speaker 6: I mean, I mean it was I know exactly. And
- 42:17Speaker 6: I'm setting here wondering to myself, how did I miss
- 42:21Speaker 6: that movie?
- 42:22Speaker 2: Because you're making a list of your top seven million serials.
- 42:25Speaker 1: And jam Harry Jim Carrey plays them, is Jim carry
- 42:28Speaker 1: it was awesome?
- 42:29Speaker 6: I bet it is phenomenal.
- 42:30Speaker 2: I can't like Letterman's my hero. But Andy Kaufman I
- 42:34Speaker 2: never got to see him or ever. He died in
- 42:38Speaker 2: the early eighties and so or like eighty one, so
- 42:41Speaker 2: I never But but the things that he would do
- 42:44Speaker 2: that weren't even supposed to be funny, that were just
- 42:46Speaker 2: let's see what everybody's reaction is. So I'm going to
- 42:49Speaker 2: read that book, you watch my movie.
- 42:51Speaker 6: And we'll check back in. I can't wait.
- 42:53Speaker 2: Okay, one final you guys want to give me an assignment?
- 42:56Speaker 6: Yeah, you want to read them? I could read the Serpentine.
- 43:00Speaker 6: We're going to have you go through my top fifty
- 43:01Speaker 6: seven thousand song list and see check for duplicates that
- 43:05Speaker 6: I could do.
- 43:05Speaker 2: Donny. My final question coach, Okay, the very first game
- 43:09Speaker 2: you coach as the head coach here at y Alma Mater,
- 43:11Speaker 2: the school that you love. Yeah, when you walk out
- 43:13Speaker 2: the first time, let's say the first home game. Yeah,
- 43:16Speaker 2: because I don't know if your first game was a
- 43:17Speaker 2: home game or not.
- 43:18Speaker 6: It was not, but I remember the first home game
- 43:20Speaker 6: very like.
- 43:20Speaker 2: Talk to me about that.
- 43:21Speaker 6: Just the whole day was so you know, people will
- 43:24Speaker 6: say numbing, people will say but that's the best way
- 43:26Speaker 6: I could describe it. It was just floating on air.
- 43:29Speaker 6: It was it was everything was in slow motion. First
- 43:32Speaker 6: time I heard my name announced over the loud speaker,
- 43:36Speaker 6: the hog call, for the first spontaneous time. It hit
- 43:40Speaker 6: different than when I was fan, you know, growing up,
- 43:44Speaker 6: the boy that my granddad was taken to all the games,
- 43:46Speaker 6: and it just hit completely different. And even as an
- 43:49Speaker 6: assistant coach, I had been here twice as an assistant coach,
- 43:51Speaker 6: and I'd heard the fight song. I had heard all that.
- 43:55Speaker 6: But when when it's your team, it is, and I
- 44:01Speaker 6: know it may sound corny, it still feels the same today.
- 44:04Speaker 6: It has not gotten old, has not been And I
- 44:08Speaker 6: think that is the difference when you talk about people
- 44:10Speaker 6: who coach at their alma mater, that's what you get. Now.
- 44:12Speaker 6: It doesn't mean that I'm going to be any more
- 44:14Speaker 6: successful than somebody that wasn't born in this zip code.
- 44:18Speaker 6: But I do care about it a deeper understanding and appreciation,
- 44:22Speaker 6: I think, and I hope that comes out to our
- 44:25Speaker 6: kids and the way I protect them, and then the
- 44:26Speaker 6: way I support the other coaches on our campus there
- 44:28Speaker 6: in the during their times, because like I said, I'm
- 44:31Speaker 6: first and foremost a razorback fan of all eighteen sports,
- 44:35Speaker 6: and then try to do the best to make fans
- 44:37Speaker 6: out of the sport that I get to coach.
- 44:38Speaker 2: Well, coach, we appreciate it.
- 44:39Speaker 6: Thanks you, thanks for having me.
