- 0:00The goal I have for the information I share is to help you become the calmest man in the room.
- 0:05The man who's present, who's grounded, who's aware, who's there, who can make decisions from a place of understanding and seeing what's really going on.
- 0:13However, sometimes life gets in the way.
- 0:16And there's this thing that we all deal with from time to time.
- 0:18I do.
- 0:19My wife does.
- 0:20Every man I've ever coached.
- 0:22Every person I've ever worked with.
- 0:24It's this condition called overwhelm.
- 0:26When we get into a place where life gets overwhelming, let's be honest, it happens.
- 0:31You know, there's a lot of things coming at us.
- 0:33There can be way too many things happening for us.
- 0:36And we get into this condition called overwhelm.
- 0:38And it is debilitating.
- 0:40I obsessed over this.
- 0:42Because since 2007, and I've been running businesses for over 30 years.
- 0:46But since 2007, I've been sharing content online.
- 0:49And I've been sharing, I've been teaching and coaching.
- 0:52And first in the real estate industry, then in business.
- 0:55Now I work with men.
- 0:57And from the very beginning, what I saw was, if somebody got into a place of overwhelm, good overwhelm or bad overwhelm, it threw everything off.
- 1:07And let me explain what I mean by that.
- 1:08Like, good overwhelm.
- 1:09There was people that I was working with, especially back when we were in real estate, when their business would take off and they would have a ton of leads and they'd have a ton of business and they'd have money coming in and they'd have all this success.
- 1:21And it was overwhelming.
- 1:22Like, that's a good overwhelm.
- 1:23It's like overwhelmed by problems that are good.
- 1:26There were also times when people had problems and issues that were overwhelming in a bad way.
- 1:30Kids are sick, stuff's going on with the house, financial issues, issues in the business.
- 1:36And so we can be overwhelmed by positive things or negative things in our life or a combination of the two.
- 1:42Sometimes a business is going great and then a kid gets sick.
- 1:45And so overwhelm is something that I obsessed around and how do we get out of it?
- 1:50How do we stop this feeling in the moment of being overwhelmed?
- 1:55And it's come up a lot in the work that I'm doing now with men in the brotherhood.
- 1:59In the Brotherhood, we teach this concept called masculine containment, this martial art-like discipline of being contained and feeling your feelings but not reacting to them and training the trigger so you're not exploding or imploding when something comes up, being present, being grounded, being aware, seeing reality for what it is, being able to make the best decision in the moment and move forward in a way that's going to really help your life and help your relationship and help you.
- 2:24But when things get overwhelming, that gets really hard.
- 2:27It's hard enough to try and stay contained when everything in your life is going good because we all have triggers and we all have trauma and conditioning and wounding and things that have happened in our past that cause us to be triggered in the present and react as though there's a threat, even though there's not a threat present where we explode, bring too much energy to the situation or implode, bring or take all our energy out of the situation.
- 2:53And either way, we're not in that place where we're present and we're grounded and aware.
- 2:56So if everything's going good, it's tough to stay there.
- 2:59When life gets overwhelming, it gets really tough.
- 3:02You know, in one of our containers, we had a guy who was doing this work and really putting time and energy in.
- 3:09But at the same time, he was closing down one business and starting a job.
- 3:14So had a business that really had suffered, starting a job, trying to do both things at once.
- 3:20Closing down the business was really frustrating to him.
- 3:22It was really hard.
- 3:23It was difficult.
- 3:23It was like, you know, I walked a lot of people through business shutdowns and it is crazy.
- 3:29overwhelming to say the least, to shut down a company, to close your hopes and dreams, to have to figure out where everything goes and what you're going to do about each little detail.
- 3:39And at the same time, he was starting the job and at the same time he was doing this work.
- 3:43because his relationship was really suffering and having challenges.
- 3:47And he asked me, what do I do if I'm just overwhelmed by life?
- 3:52Well, the good news is, like I said, I've obsessed over overwhelm.
- 3:56And in my coaching practice,
- 3:59I wanted to figure out a way for people to get out of this fast.
- 4:02Like, how do we get to the place where we take overwhelm to confidence?
- 4:06Because here's what overwhelm does for us, to us.
- 4:09First, it puts us in fight, flight, fight, flight, fawn, or freeze.
- 4:14If you're overwhelmed in the moment, you're in a nervous system reaction.
- 4:17You're fighting.
- 4:18You're wanting to run away.
- 4:19You're fighting.
- 4:20You're just kind of dealing with it or you freeze.
- 4:22Like you don't know what to do next.
- 4:24I've been there.
- 4:25I think any human has.
- 4:27You know, we get to this place where maybe if we're not in that big of a reaction, we're pushing through, we're doing as much as we can.
- 4:32You know, we're doing something, but we don't know if it's the right thing.
- 4:35So in the back of our mind, we still feel overwhelmed.
- 4:37We don't feel like we're making progress.
- 4:39We feel like we're not maybe moving in the right direction.
- 4:41It can feel like you're spinning your wheels or stuck.
- 4:44You know, I hear it in the language of people all the time when they're overwhelmed is like,
- 4:48I'm doing as much as I can, but I don't feel like I'm going anywhere.
- 4:51I'm spinning my wheels.
- 4:52I'm just doing activities, and I don't really know if it's making a difference.
- 4:56And when we get into this place, the biggest challenge is it can make us feel physically and mentally completely and totally drained.
- 5:05Like just the situation of overwhelm, just all those things rattling around in our head can make us feel physically exhausted, fatigued, drained.
- 5:14And from there, it's hard to accomplish anything.
- 5:18But here's what I found in coaching people is that when you change a situation, often you can change the energy.
- 5:25And when you put the right process in place, often you can move people in a totally different direction.
- 5:30And what I know for myself and the people that I've worked with is if you're in a place of overwhelm, you can actually flip it into a place of confidence
- 5:39And I'm going to share the exact process with you.
- 5:42Let me tell you where this comes from.
- 5:44You know, I'm one of those people who I want a simple solution to big problems.
- 5:48Because when you're overwhelmed, having a big, involved problem-solving system is just more overwhelming.
- 5:56It's kind of ironic.
- 5:57Last year, or maybe the year before...
- 6:00my sister, or sorry, my wife and her sister joined a program for central nervous system overwhelm.
- 6:06It was how to get your nervous system out of reaction.
- 6:09And they both started at the same time and they got into the platform and it was so ironic because the platform and the amount of work you had to do to get your central nervous system out of a reaction overwhelmed both of them.
- 6:24And after they said, you know, hey, but you'll start, they set it up at the beginning.
- 6:28Katie told her sister, hey, you start and I'll start at the same time.
- 6:31Then we'll talk in like two weeks and we'll see how much progress we've made.
- 6:34And then we'll like compare notes.
- 6:36And when they got on the call, both of them were like, isn't this the hardest thing you've ever done?
- 6:40I feel more overwhelmed, more activated just by this system.
- 6:44And so for me, when I look at overwhelm, I wanted to figure out how do we fix this quickly?
- 6:50How do we, in a short period of time, go from the state of overwhelm to feeling like we're moving in the right direction, to feeling confident about what we're doing and to actually making progress?
- 7:01And I'll tell you where I used to use this process I'm about to share with you.
- 7:05a lot.
- 7:06So in my former life, I ran a business consulting firm called Simple Operations, a coaching firm.
- 7:12And most of our clients ran million dollar or multi-million dollar businesses.
- 7:18And a lot of those clients paid for one-on-one time with me.
- 7:21I don't do one-on-one coaching anymore.
- 7:22I just work with the brotherhood in groups, but...
- 7:25I used to do a lot of one-on-one coaching.
- 7:27Not a lot.
- 7:27I used to do a number of one-on-one coaching days a year for specific clients where I really felt like I could help them make a big difference.
- 7:36And they would come into Austin and spend a day at my house.
- 7:39And the first thing we would do is go through this process.
- 7:43And those days, when they started, they were around $20,000 and they got up to about $50,000 a day.
- 7:49And so this process you're getting, people have paid tens of thousands of dollars to go through it.
- 7:55and it changes things.
- 7:57Because the reason people were paying me that money was most of the time because their business was runaway success.
- 8:03And they didn't know how to deal with it all.
- 8:05They didn't know how to handle it.
- 8:07They were in that place of good overwhelm.
- 8:08But like your body, your nervous system doesn't know if it's good or bad overwhelm.
- 8:12Like, hey, we're experiencing a ton of success.
- 8:14Your body's still reacting to it.
- 8:16We're experiencing a ton of not, you know, challenges and issues.
- 8:19Your body's reacting to it.
- 8:20The irony is your body reacts the same way to both.
- 8:24And so people would fly into Austin and we would spend usually about eight hours together.
- 8:29And in the first hour, we went through the process I'm about to show you because I
- 8:35When I looked at overwhelm over and over again, and I worked with people who were going through this, here's what I found.
- 8:42Overwhelm is pretty simple.
- 8:44Like, yes, all of the things are overwhelming, you might be complicated, and all of the things in your life might have some complications and complexity to it, but actually feeling overwhelmed is simple.
- 8:55Here's where overwhelm comes from.
- 8:58It's when there's too much pressure and noise in our life, so there's high pressure and noise, too many things coming at you,
- 9:03and an unknown outcome.
- 9:04You don't know what to do next.
- 9:07When you have too much pressure and noise and you're not clear on what to do next, the outcome is overwhelm and all of that cascade of symptoms that I just talked about happens where you feel fatigued and exhausted and you can't make the right decisions, you don't know how to move forward.
- 9:19Well, to take overwhelm to confidence, it's pretty simple.
- 9:23You have to clarify today, clarify everything that's going on
- 9:27And then have a partially known outcome.
- 9:29So unknown outcome to partially known outcome.
- 9:32And then you can flip it into confidence.
- 9:35Let me explain what I mean by this.
- 9:37So in the first part, like how we get to overwhelm, pressure and noise and an unknown outcome.
- 9:44Most of the time, and if you slow this down and you think about this with me, think about the last time you were overwhelmed or maybe you're overwhelmed right now.
- 9:51One of the biggest issues that you have is there's a lot of things going on and you don't know what to do right now.
- 10:00You're not clear on what your next step in this moment should be.
- 10:03That causes a feeling of overwhelm.
- 10:05And you're not clear on what do I do in this moment so that I no longer feel this way.
- 10:11And then what happens is all of the things that are going on in our life are bouncing around in our head.
- 10:17We're carrying this to-do list that feels endless.
- 10:20You know, it was interesting when people would come to my office, often they would come in and pretty accelerated heightened state coming to my home to do consulting with me.
- 10:29And they would often be feeling some level of overwhelm.
- 10:35And, um, um,
- 10:37What I'd have them do is tell me, like, why do you think you're overwhelmed?
- 10:42They said, Alex, there's a million things going on right now and I don't know what to do next.
- 10:46It was always pressure and noise and an unknown outcome.
- 10:50And I would say, are you sure it's a million things?
- 10:52And they would say, oh, maybe it's not a million, but it's like so many, I couldn't even tell you.
- 10:57And I would say, okay, well, let's get them down right now.
- 11:00They say, what?
- 11:00And I said, okay, we're going to make an exhaustive list of all the things that are overwhelming you, everything in the business, in your life, everything.
- 11:06Let's start writing them down.
- 11:09And so I'd literally have them start telling me what it is.
- 11:11And because I was facilitating a consulting session, I'd be writing them on a whiteboard as they told me, you know what happened?
- 11:18A million or endless or thousands or hundreds of things would usually become like maybe half a whiteboard.
- 11:27and we would fill out the list, and then I would say, is there anything else?
- 11:31And they would say, yeah, there's one more thing, and I would say, is there anything else?
- 11:35And we'd put it all up on a whiteboard, write it all down, and they would say, I want you to look at this list.
- 11:40Do you feel better just seeing it all written down?
- 11:42And if they said no, I would say, okay, let's get up, let's go for a walk, let's move around a little bit, let's come back, we'd go for a walk, we'd move around, we'd come back, this is how I facilitate it, I'm gonna tell you how to do it for yourself in just a second.
- 11:55Then we would come back and sit down and I would say, okay, there's still stuff that's overwhelming you.
- 11:58Let's make sure we get this list totally complete.
- 12:01So let's put everything that we can down.
- 12:03Is there anything else that comes up?
- 12:05And when we would move around a little bit and walk, we would always come back and they would say, yeah, okay, there's three more things or there's this thing or there's this issue with my kids.
- 12:13And so we'd write it up on the board and then I'd say, is there anything else?
- 12:16They'd say, no.
- 12:17I say, okay, look at this list.
- 12:19Do you start to feel better in your body just seeing this list written down?
- 12:23And every time, never failed, they'd say, yeah, you know what?
- 12:27It's not a million things.
- 12:29It's that.
- 12:30It's everything that's on the board.
- 12:31And I do feel a little bit better.
- 12:33I don't know what to do, but I feel better.
- 12:35And that process of just getting everything out of your mind and onto a whiteboard, or the way I'm going to share it for you to do it, and the way that I coach people to do it these days is to write it all down on a sheet of paper.
- 12:46So here's the process for you to do for yourself.
- 12:48The first step of getting out of overwhelm is getting clarity.
- 12:52Getting all the things out of your head and onto paper.
- 12:55When we're carrying them all around in our head, they become even more overwhelming.
- 12:58They start banging into each other.
- 13:00We start thinking that they're endless.
- 13:01The list is just so much that we couldn't even quantify it.
- 13:05But you can always quantify all the things that are overwhelming you.
- 13:08Always.
- 13:10You just keep writing until you don't have anything left to write.
- 13:14And so here's a process that I share with men in the brotherhood.
- 13:16And here's a process that I go through.
- 13:18I did it a few weeks ago.
- 13:19There was a day where I woke up and I was feeling
- 13:24overwhelmed.
- 13:25Like there was too much going on.
- 13:26You know, I haven't run a startup since 2007.
- 13:29It's 2026.
- 13:30It's 19 years and I'm running this startup.
- 13:33Every day there's something new happening.
- 13:35There's a new question, a new system set up, a new problem to solve.
- 13:38There's always something going on.
- 13:39And there was some stuff going on with my family, with my kids, nothing major, but it was just enough that I woke up feeling like, shit, this is overwhelming.
- 13:47Like I'm in a place of overwhelm.
- 13:49And so I did this myself.
- 13:50So the first step of the process is go for a 20
- 13:54like at least 20 minutes, not 10, not five, take 20 minutes and go for a walk outside by yourself, no electronics.
- 14:04The bilateral stimulation of a walk will help you process.
- 14:08And the intention of that walk is to just have everything that's coming up for you.
- 14:13All the things that are overwhelming you make themselves present.
- 14:17and then come back after that 20, for me it's usually 25, because I do a lap of the neighborhood, it's a little over a mile.
- 14:23I come back and I start writing everything that I can down.
- 14:27And I write just a list of all the things that are overwhelming me, whether it's big or small.
- 14:31There's no quantifier here.
- 14:32It's like, what are the things that are overwhelming?
- 14:34Every single thing.
- 14:36Even if it feels insignificant, you get it out of your head and you put it down on paper, all of it.
- 14:41So I did that.
- 14:42I went for a walk, wrote everything down,
- 14:45And when I was done riding, I actually felt a little bit better, but I could feel like there was still something agitating there.
- 14:50Now, when you do this, you might go for a 25-minute walk, 20-minute walk, write everything down, and you'll feel better.
- 14:55But if you don't, if you don't feel a shift in your body, get up and go for another walk.
- 15:01So that's what I did.
- 15:02Even though there was a bunch of stuff overwhelming me, even though there was a lot of things that needed my attention, what I know is if I'm not clear on what I'm doing and I'm in a state of overwhelm and I'm pushing through and spinning my wheels, I'm going to feel less productive at the end of the day.
- 15:16I'm going to feel like I didn't have any productivity at the end of the day.
- 15:19And I want to feel like I change things when I'm overwhelmed.
- 15:21I want to start moving in a place of confidence.
- 15:25And so I went for another walk, came back, and wouldn't you know, there's like three or four other things that came out, wrote them all down, and then I sat with it and looked at it and made sure, and then I felt it.
- 15:36And I want you to feel it if you're in place of overwhelm.
- 15:39A shift in your body that actually says, hey, I'm moving in the right direction, just by writing everything down, just by getting everything on paper.
- 15:48It's like a breath, like your shoulders drop, like your body relaxes a little bit, because here's what you've done.
- 15:53You've taken all the ambiguity from inside your head and put it down on a sheet of paper.
- 15:59You've taken this list that feels endless and you've actually quantified it and made it real.
- 16:04And even if it's a lot of stuff, even if it's overwhelming amount of stuff, it's so much easier to start dealing with it when you have clarity rather than just pressure and noise and not knowing what to do next and that unknown outcome.
- 16:17And so that's what I did.
- 16:18First step, go for a walk, write everything down, get it out of my head, get it down on paper, feel the shift in your body, and go for another walk if you don't.
- 16:27The most I've ever had anybody tell me that they had to do was three walks, and then they felt the shift in their body.
- 16:32Like you'll actually feel a change in the energy in your body.
- 16:36I've worked through this process with literally hundreds of people in person with dozens, but in my coaching programs, hundreds and hundreds of people have done this and they come back and they're like, hey, this process works, especially for getting out of overwhelm in the moment.
- 16:51And so that's step one.
- 16:53So we go from pressure and noise and an unknown outcome, which creates overwhelm, to now we clarify.
- 16:59We have clarity around what we need to do today.
- 17:02Like that big list, no matter how much it is, we have clarity.
- 17:05And so going from pressure and noise and the lack of clarity and ambiguity to having clarity and seeing the list and understanding and having it out of our heads, just that is going to shift things in the right direction.
- 17:16It'll make you feel better.
- 17:17It'll cause a release.
- 17:18But now I want to take that feeling of overwhelm and turn it into confidence.
- 17:22And how do we do that?
- 17:24We need a partially known outcome.
- 17:26Now, I know that sounds like some weird words.
- 17:28Partially known outcome, what the heck do you mean by that?
- 17:30Well, here's what I mean.
- 17:32When you are in a state of overwhelm and you don't know what to do next, that means you have an unknown outcome.
- 17:37You don't know what your next step is.
- 17:38You don't know what your priority is.
- 17:41And so what I want you to do next is once you have everything down on that sheet of paper, that entire list,
- 17:46Take a couple minutes, then go back to it and ask yourself, what is the first thing I should do on this list?
- 17:55What's the priority?
- 17:56What's the next most important thing?
- 17:57What's the thing that's going to cause the most relief?
- 17:59What's the thing that's most timely?
- 18:00What's the thing that I need to do now?
- 18:02What's the thing that is going to get worse if I don't do it now?
- 18:05And market number one,
- 18:07And then keep going.
- 18:08Mark it number two.
- 18:09Number three, prioritize that list until you have the first five to ten things prioritized that will actually give you clarity on what you're going to do right now.
- 18:20And when you start prioritizing, you're going to feel another shift in your body.
- 18:23You're going to feel another release in your body of like, okay, now I really know what to do.
- 18:28You know, now I'm clear.
- 18:29I've gone from this place of ambiguity and questioning and just feeling a ton of pressure and noise to now getting clarity.
- 18:36And that's how we turn overwhelm into confidence.
- 18:39When you have, you clarify today and you have a partially known outcome.
- 18:43And what I mean by that is you're never gonna know everything you need to do.
- 18:47That's just not how life works.
- 18:49You're never gonna know exactly every next step to take.
- 18:52It's just not how we are as human beings.
- 18:55But if you know the next few priorities and the next few steps and you can start taking those and start moving in that direction, here's what happens.
- 19:03And I promise you if you do this, you're going to feel it.
- 19:06And I'd love to hear from you if you do go through this process because pressure and noise and an unknown outcome creates overwhelm.
- 19:13You combine those two, you're going to have overwhelm every time.
- 19:17Clarifying today and having a partially known outcome, the next few steps, the next five to ten steps we're going to take, the next things we can check off of a list.
- 19:25creates confidence.
- 19:27And here's what I've seen over and over again in people just like you and me, is when you go from one side of this equation to the other, that confidence feeling actually can lift the feeling of fatigue.
- 19:42It can give you some energy, can actually motivate you to get some things done, can actually start moving you in a direction where you feel positive about what's happening instead of feeling fatigued and exhausted and drained.
- 19:54That's how we are as humans.
- 19:55Like situationally, we are so sensitive to our situation that we can go from feeling exhausted like we can't do anything else.
- 20:03But when we get clarity on our next step, we can actually feel like we're moving in a direction and we're getting into this magical thing called momentum.
- 20:11And for us as people, especially if you're listening to me, momentum changes everything.
- 20:17When we feel like we're moving in the right direction, when we feel like we are making things happen, when we feel like we're actually knocking things off a list and checking them off and lowering the pressure and noise in our lives, that can make us feel momentum, which is motivating and exciting and moving forward.
- 20:33And even if our lives are still in a situation of overwhelm, and even if there's still too much to do, and even if there's still a lot going on, if we're actually moving in a direction
- 20:48it moves into confidence and it moves into momentum and it starts making our life easier.
- 20:54Like I said, I've been through this process with literally hundreds of people and I've never had anybody, not yet, come back and tell me, hey Alex, this just didn't work at all.
- 21:05I've had people say, hey, maybe I didn't feel 100% confidence, but man, I felt a lot better than I did.
- 21:10But most of the time, people come back and say, you know, the craziest thing happened.
- 21:15I was feeling exhausted and drained, and my heart was palpitating.
- 21:18I mean, I've worked with entrepreneurs, so they say things like, you know, I had an eye twitch, or I had a really bad headache, or I felt like I just couldn't get anything done, or my vision was blurring.
- 21:29Like, stress and overwhelm can cause a lot of things to happen in our body.
- 21:33I was feeling body pain, I was feeling like my back hurt, my shoulders hurt.
- 21:38And then I went through this process.
- 21:40And even though all that stuff was still there, so much of this went away or got better.
- 21:45The headache improved.
- 21:46My energy improved.
- 21:47My eyes stopped twitching.
- 21:48My heart stopped palpitating.
- 21:51I was able to take a deep breath and start creating progress forward.
- 21:56And so, you know, these days, like I said at the beginning of the podcast, my work focuses on helping men become the calmest man in the room.
- 22:05And I'm in that place in life where I actually feel like everything I've ever done in my past, even my childhood, even the way I was raised by my mom in a woman's support group, to have insight on women that I don't think most men have, even running the businesses that I had, like when I was a coach, and I coached over 50% or more female CEOs most of the time.
- 22:26And all of the strategies that I had in that business were about helping the entrepreneur calm their nervous system and stay in their bodies and have a predictable business that didn't overwhelm them.
- 22:38And now I can share these strategies in this new discipline of masculine containment.
- 22:42So I feel like my whole life has led up to right now so I can do the absolute best that I can for the people who are working with me now and for the people who are listening to me now.
- 22:53And it's a pretty magical place to be.
- 22:56And so if you feel overwhelmed now, go through this process.
- 23:00And if you don't, save this podcast episode for the time that you do feel overwhelmed, for that day where you do feel fatigued, for the day where you're dragging, where you can't get stuff done, where you don't know what to do next.
- 23:11Listen to this, go for a walk, write everything down, make sure you feel the shift in your body.
- 23:16If not, go for a walk again, make sure you feel the shift in your body.
- 23:20If not, go for a walk again.
- 23:21You'll be at the record of three times.
- 23:23Nobody's ever had overwhelm at last three walks.
- 23:26Get everything down on a sheet of paper.
- 23:29Prioritize it.
- 23:31Get your partially known outcome, like the next steps you can take, and turn overwhelm into confidence.
- 23:38This works if you let it.
- 23:40This works if you put it in place.
- 23:42And it is a life-changing strategy because it will change your day if you can get out of overwhelm and get into a place where you know what you're doing next.
- 23:51If you know someone who needs to hear this, please share this with them.
- 23:53I keep this ad free so there's no noise between you and I.
- 23:57And so I'd love for you to share this with them.
- 23:59And if you're a man who is doing the work and you want to get better at being the calmest man in the room and maybe you're having some challenges in your relationship, which can definitely lead to a sense and feeling of overwhelm.
- 24:11and you don't want to do this work alone, go to thebrotherhoodsociety.com.
- 24:15I would be honored to walk this path with you, to have you in the brotherhood, to be able to show you the martial art-like discipline of masculine containment with men from around the world who are doing the work together and moving in a direction to make their relationship better.
- 24:29to bring them and their partner back together again and create intimacy and connection like they've never had before.
- 24:36But this work will not just do that.
- 24:38It will improve every aspect of your life.
