  Welcome to
• 0:00
  startuprad.io,
• 0:09
your podcast and YouTube blog covering the German
• 0:12
startup scene with news, interviews, and
• 0:16
  live events.
• 0:20
Hello and welcome everybody. Before we start,
• 0:24
one important note here. For this January-February
• 0:27
2026 briefing, we reviewed more than
• 0:32
  15 thousand raw URLs. We
• 0:36
have been looking at funding news, investor updates, and
• 0:39
ecosystem reports across Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.
• 0:43
We are now deliberately omitting the vast majority
• 0:47
of them. Startup Radio now focuses on signal over
• 0:51
noise. We're not here to repeat every small seed
• 0:54
round, every accelerated press release, or every
• 0:58
incremental product update. We focus on structural
• 1:01
  capital movements, sector shifts, institutional
• 1:05
participation, and companies that move the DACH
• 1:08
ecosystem forward. This format is now
• 1:12
the only highlights. We drop part 2 of
• 1:16
what we used to do in our news, the deep dive. We are here for
• 1:20
you to see the bigger picture. We may share some
• 1:23
of the content of the deep dive on our social media
• 1:27
channels. Um, note we are now only
• 1:30
active on LinkedIn, X, TikTok, and
• 1:34
YouTube. All other channels are on pause for now.
• 1:38
For now, you can expect one structured news wrap-up
• 1:42
with 5 to 10 news items each month with Chris and
• 1:45
me. We take a July and August break, meet again
• 1:49
in the very late August, do a summer wrap-up which
• 1:53
usually goes live sometime early September, and then
• 1:57
September through December, we stay with monthly news.
• 2:00
Around December 22nd, we close the year with our annual
• 2:04
fintech review, and we are adding quarterly
• 2:07
strategic reviews to provide you a product, capital, and sector
• 2:11
analysis. That's what I will do. We also filter
• 2:15
aggressive, so do you— don't have to. Now let's
• 2:18
have a look at what January and February are really telling us. Chris is
• 2:22
joining us not today, not from New York, but
• 2:26
from Washington, DC due to the State of the Union, right,
• 2:30
Chris? Yes, I'm in the capital. Hello, hello, hello,
• 2:34
hello. Let's dive in with the macro
• 2:37
view. January and February 2026 across the DACH
• 2:41
startup ecosystem— Germany, Austria, and Switzerland— reveal a
• 2:45
much clearer pattern of capital concentration
• 2:48
  in enterprise artificial intelligence, sustainability,
• 2:52
  compliance software, defense, and dual-use
• 2:56
technology. Think drones, robotics, and industrial automation,
• 3:00
  and milestone-driven biotech with multiple
• 3:03
$100 million+ growth stage financing in
• 3:07
Berlin, Mannheim, Munich, and visible participation
• 3:11
from institutional lenders such as the European Investment
• 3:14
Bank, KfW, German Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau, and
• 3:18
major German commercial banks, signalizing a
• 3:22
selective normalization of growth stage venture capital rather
• 3:26
  than broad-based early-stage exuberance. Beyond
• 3:29
the headline rounds, the structural sign is
• 3:33
the re-emergence of scale-stage financing in
• 3:36
sectors aligned with regulation, geopolitics, and
• 3:40
  industrial modernization, including
• 3:44
  AI-powered enterprise automation,
• 3:48
ESG/CSRD compliance platforms, unmanned systems and
• 3:52
  security technology, modular robotics integration
• 3:56
into manufacturing lines, and clinical-stage life
• 3:59
  science programs, while consumer applications,
• 4:03
speculative AI frontier narratives, and non-strategic
• 4:06
SaaS categories remain largely absent from major
• 4:10
  DACH funding
• 4:14
  announcements. And yes,
• 4:18
and, um, we also see, if we look a bit ahead at what
• 4:22
today's episode is going to bring you. Um, geographically, it's going to
• 4:26
be interesting because we see, well, Berlin is continuing its lead
• 4:29
in enterprise AI and applied software
• 4:33
scale-ups. We see that Munich is
• 4:37
reinforcing their strengths in robotics, defense tech, deep tech
• 4:40
hardware innovation. Mannheim, Baden-Württemberg, in the southwest of
• 4:44
Germany, have more and more visibility in compliance and industrial software as
• 4:48
a service. And Heidelberg, also in that region,
• 4:51
remains relevant in life sciences. It's a um, it's
• 4:55
a beacon for German cancer research as well.
• 4:59
So what we see here is that Germany and the
• 5:02
whole DACH region is really one with a
• 5:06
regional specialization, and those patterns really show us
• 5:11
that Germany is different from other
• 5:15
startup ecosystems in Europe that are much more
• 5:19
  centralized. We see institutional,
• 5:22
co-investor visibility in January and February, particularly
• 5:26
  through EIB-backed financing structures and
• 5:31
bank participation. That overall indicates a recalibration of
• 5:35
perceived risk in strategic industries, suggesting that
• 5:39
public capital alignment with venture-backed companies is
• 5:42
  increasing in defense, security, industrial
• 5:47
modernization categories. All overall showing broader EU policy
• 5:50
priorities. So it's long discussions we see in politics as
• 5:54
a whole, um, especially since the bigger Ukraine
• 5:58
war started. Taken together, first two months of 2026, January and
• 6:02
February, now we see, uh, expansion and growth state venture capital
• 6:06
across the DACH region. So DACH, always Deutschland, Austria,
• 6:10
Switzerland, we always say it. Um, capital is available for
• 6:14
  companies with revenue clarity and
• 6:18
regulatory tailwinds, defensible industrial positioning and
• 6:22
institutional credibility, but constrained for speculative,
• 6:26
consumer-facing, or non-strategic categories. What this all means,
• 6:29
um, we will see. So if we are looking
• 6:33
for a headline for the past 2 months, then it is
• 6:37
  a disciplined expansion. Okay.
• 6:40
Not hype, not freeze, just discipline.
• 6:44
Um, this episode is supported by our partners. If
• 6:47
you want direct access to founders, investors, and innovation
• 6:51
leaders across Germany, Austria, and Switzerland,
• 6:59
visit startuprade.io/become-a-partner. The top signal of Sapiens: 100
• 7:03
million series C round, making it a unicorn in
• 7:06
Mannheim. We may add that Mannheim has been
• 7:10
very important for German, uh, for the German industry in
• 7:14
the past. Not only is it the place very close
• 7:17
by where Carl Benz invented the car, but it was also
• 7:21
the place where the first electric elevator was working
• 7:25
here in Germany. And I spent once there
• 7:29
some time visiting all their entrepreneurship centers,
• 7:33
each one focused on a different, on a
• 7:36
different, um, industry, different vertical, and they are very interesting. And I do
• 7:40
believe they have 9 of them right now. So
• 7:43
let's go to Mannheim, or as
• 7:47
they locally say, Mannheim. Based on Sapiens, secured
• 7:52
a $100 million US dollar Series C funding round
• 7:55
led by Decarbonization Partners, a joint venture
• 7:59
between BlackRock and Temasek, the sovereign wealth fund
• 8:02
of Singapore, reaching unicorn valuation and
• 8:06
positioning sustainability compliance ESG reporting, supply chain
• 8:09
  due diligence, and
• 8:13
CSRD-aligned regulatory software as a core enterprise infrastructure
• 8:16
within Germany and across Europe. And CSRD
• 8:20
is Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive, of course, from the
• 8:24
European Union. This financing signals that
• 8:28
  EU regulatory pressure, including CSRD
• 8:31
  requirements and supply chain transparency
• 8:35
mandates, is transforming compliance obligations into
• 8:38
recurring SaaS revenue models, with global institutional
• 8:42
  investors backing German compliance technology
• 8:45
  as durable enterprise infrastructure rather
• 8:49
than thematic climate exposure. Yeah, so we definitely
• 8:53
see that climate— climate compliance— because you
• 8:57
just said climate compliance used to be a topic that was a bit
• 9:01
like overheard and overlooked, but now I
• 9:04
guess following rules is one of the core strengths of the Germans, I
• 9:08
guess. So now we see it
• 9:12
here. Exactly, that's a competitive mode. Yeah, and a
• 9:15
company like BlackRock definitely legitimizes the
• 9:19
whole category. Uh, signal number 2, Parloa. It's a Berlin-based
• 9:23
company that raised $350 million in a Series D, now standing
• 9:27
at a $3 billion valuation, to scale
• 9:31
enterprise AI agents embedded in contact center
• 9:35
workflows, cost customer relationship management systems and customer support automation
• 9:38
  platforms, all these things,
• 9:42
positioning Applied AI as something that they claim
• 9:46
is procurement-ready enterprise infrastructure, helping to
• 9:50
  improve ROI and
• 9:53
revenue expansion dynamics. Overall, we see that the company
• 9:58
apparently is pretty promising, and because this whole
• 10:02
round demonstrates that Applied AI integrated
• 10:07
into enterprise software, um, is fundable
• 10:11
at big rounds. And, um, yeah,
• 10:15
showing that deployment depth and operational efficiency, what if you
• 10:19
can prove them, and if you can prove that there are actually gains,
• 10:22
can also mean huge success for your startup. And we
• 10:26
  also see that Berlin
• 10:30
  is a Yeah, is a, is a
• 10:33
main hub in Europe for AI
• 10:38
tech like this. This isn't really a speculative AI
• 10:42
narrative anymore. Yeah, exactly. So yeah, yeah, this is already like operational.
• 10:46
It does exist. And yeah, yeah. Let me
• 10:49
take over the next big funding. Quantum
• 10:53
Systems, $150 million institutional financing in the Munich
• 10:56
area. Defense and dual-use technology company Quantum
• 11:00
  Systems secured over $150 €1
• 11:04
billion, uh, European financing package backed by the European
• 11:07
Investment Bank, Commerzbank, KfW, and Deutsche
• 11:10
Bank, highlighting increasing alignment between venture-backed deep tech
• 11:14
companies and public institutional capital in
• 11:18
unmanned aerial systems and security infrastructure. I think
• 11:22
everybody knows why. Um, the financing reflects geopolitical
• 11:25
realignment and EU security funding priorities,
• 11:30
signaling that defense-adjacent startups and DACH
• 11:33
  are transitioning from politically sensitive
• 11:36
  ventures to strategically supported industrial
• 11:40
players, with institutional lenders reducing perceived
• 11:44
risk and enabling stage expansion. Yeah, we see
• 11:48
it over and over, defense tech becoming something more normal,
• 11:51
something that makes money, something that becomes more and more important
• 11:55
  in especially the dual-use cases.
• 11:59
Yeah, uh, yes. In startup culture as well as in
• 12:03
general industry everywhere. RobCo, Munich-based, a
• 12:07
Munich-based company in robotics, raised $100 million
• 12:10
in the Series C funding. They are, they
• 12:14
also want to expand AI tech, in this
• 12:17
  case modular AI-driven industrial automation
• 12:21
systems for manufacturing environments. So they say, well,
• 12:24
we can combine robotic hardware with
• 12:28
software orchestration, all of it tailored to what is a strength
• 12:32
of German industry or German companies, basically the industrial base
• 12:36
and like Mittelstand there, so the medium-sized companies
• 12:40
for whom Germany is famous for. Um, we also see
• 12:44
that this round for RobCo, as I said, based in Munich, is
• 12:47
kind of reinforcing Bavaria's position as a robotics and
• 12:52
advanced manufacturing hub, showing that physical
• 12:55
automation integrated into production lines is a venture category
• 12:59
in Germany that stays important. And especially
• 13:03
when you can align this with industrial
• 13:06
modernization, long-term enterprise contracts. I mean, it all goes to
• 13:09
  the strengths of German
• 13:13
engineering. The software meets the factory
• 13:18
floor. I see. I think it's called Exiva.
• 13:22
  Uh, €51 million funding biotech
• 13:25
in Berlin. Heidelberg-based biotech company Exiva raised €51 million
• 13:29
in a Series B funding— €51 million, by the way.
• 13:32
Um, and I've also seen this that you just talked about, and I had €85
• 13:36
million in the back of my mind. Yes, €85
• 13:40
  million, $100 million. So, um, that's, that's
• 13:43
not a one-on-one relation anymore. Um, let's go back
• 13:47
to the news. Heidelberg-based biotech company Exiva
• 13:51
raised €51 million in Series B financing
• 13:56
  co-led by GM,
• 14:00
GIMV, and EQ2. T Life Science—
• 14:03
  sorry— to advance Deraphan,
• 14:06
a treatment targeting agitation in Alzheimer's
• 14:10
disease, reinforcing Germany's continued relevance in
• 14:13
  clinical-stage biotech and neuroscience research
• 14:17
within the startup ecosystem. The findings also
• 14:21
signal that European biotech capital remains available
• 14:24
for programs with credible clinical milestones
• 14:28
experienced syndicates, and defined regulatory pathways,
• 14:32
underscoring that life science financing in Germany is
• 14:36
  milestone-driven rather than hype-driven. Before
• 14:39
we move into implications for founders and investors, a short message
• 14:43
from our partners. If you would like to be
• 14:50
here, visit startuprate.io/become-a-partner. January and February show
• 14:53
selective growth stage confidence in the
• 14:56
DACH startup ecosystem. Yes, we see that in
• 15:00
enterprise AI, compliance infrastructure, as we said, defense tech,
• 15:04
robotics, and biotech. And that means, yeah, I would
• 15:08
say for startups, built with regulation,
• 15:12
  procurement complexity, and geopolitical priorities
• 15:15
create a durable tailwind. Yeah, and for
• 15:19
investors, not just for the startups, we see that like
• 15:24
sector conviction is beating a broad exposure in
• 15:27
this phase. And for the innovation leaders, the
• 15:31
sectors define broad-level discussions in 2026. For all of
• 15:35
  this, we've reviewed over 15,000
• 15:39
raw news links. Yeah, and these are the structural signals we can
• 15:43
condense for you. These were the highlights January, February 2026.
• 15:47
Thanks for listening. Thanks guys. Have a
• 15:54
good day. Bye-bye. Folks. Find more
