- 0:00101 Runway shows.
- 0:03Is that right?
- 0:04It's been a long time, but, yeah, 101.
- 0:07In November, I won the CFDA award, which is, like equivalent of a lifetime achievement award.
- 0:11By the time I turn around, Katy Perry is stark naked.
- 0:15Like, naked naked, nothing left to the imagination.
- 0:18I have no off switch.
- 0:19That's the problem.
- 0:20I didn't get married Till I was 30, and then my husband died when I was 34.
- 0:24But then after that, I really couldn't even think about anything for years.
- 0:30Someone slams the door, you crawl in the window.
- 0:33You know, that's like, what I've been doing my whole life.
- 0:36I'm, like, relentless.
- 0:37Billy G.
- 0:38King said, pressure is a privilege.
- 0:40Isn't that a good one?
- 0:48Fashion trends come and go, but true style that lasts.
- 0:51Today's guest has spent more than four decades proving exactly that.
- 0:55Cynthia Rowley isn't just one of America's most celebrated fashion designers.
- 0:59She's a creative force who has built an enduring lifestyle brand spanning fashion, home accessories, collaborations, and media, all while remaining refreshingly authentic to herself.
- 1:10In a world obsessed with what's new, Cynthia Rowley has built a career proving that longevity is the ultimate luxury.
- 1:16In an industry that's constantly chasing the next trend, she's done something far more remarkable.
- 1:22She stayed relevant without losing her identity.
- 1:24With more than 100 Runway shows to her name, she's dressed everyone from Hollywood stars to women simply looking to feel their best, reminding us that style isn't about following rules.
- 1:34It's about expressing who you are.
- 1:36Today, we're talking about much more than fashion.
- 1:39We're exploring reinvention, confidence, creativity, entrepreneurship, personal style in midlife, and why the most interesting chapter of a woman's life may just be the one she's living in right now.
- 1:50Before we dive in, if you're enjoying the iconic midlife, be sure to follow or subscribe wherever you're listening.
- 1:56It helps us continue bringing you inspiring conversations and with women who are redefining what's possible in midlife.
- 2:03Please welcome the incredibly talented Cynthia Rowley.
- 2:06Welcome to the iconic midlife.
- 2:08Cynthia, how are you today?
- 2:10I'm great.
- 2:11How about you?
- 2:11Oh, I'm so great.
- 2:12I'm so great.
- 2:13I'm just so excited to have you here.
- 2:15I'm glad you.
- 2:18Absolutely, Absolutely.
- 2:20And major congratulations are in order for you.
- 2:24101 Runway shows.
- 2:27Is that.
- 2:28Is that right?
- 2:29You've had 100?
- 2:30I mean, yeah.
- 2:32I mean, it's been a long time, but yeah.
- 2:34101.
- 2:35My gosh.
- 2:36Okay.
- 2:36And we've been going through our archives, which is really cool.
- 2:41In November, I won the CFDA award, which is like kind of the equivalent of a lifetime achievement award.
- 2:48So we had to go through all these Runway shows, and I was like, where is all this stuff?
- 2:52Stuff?
- 2:53And so we started digging and we found it and we've been going through and we're posting a bunch of little stories about each piece and not each piece, but that's when we were like, oh, wow, it's 101 times
- 3:134050 looks.
- 3:15Is like four or five thousand pieces that we've been, you know, that we have technically probably have in archives, but I know we don't have them, but yeah, it's been.
- 3:29We have a lot.
- 3:31That's amazing.
- 3:32Amazing.
- 3:33What a career.
- 3:34That too.
- 3:34What a career accomplishment.
- 3:36Is there a collection that stands out to you or like a certain piece that is your favorite?
- 3:42Definitely.
- 3:43No.
- 3:44Like, there's no way.
- 3:46I mean, I would say the opposite.
- 3:48There's some cringe worthy pieces that I'm like, oh, what was I thinking?
- 3:53And, you know, some stuff from the 90s doesn't stand the test of time, while others do.
- 4:02And, you know, I'm like, surprised to see stuff that we did, like, you know, maybe 10 years ago.
- 4:11And you're seeing it kind of like in collections now.
- 4:16There's a lot of stuff that's vaguely kind of humorous, like Schiaparelli style, you know, like, things like that.
- 4:26You'll see.
- 4:27Okay, follow us and you'll see we're posting.
- 4:31We just posted the first, but we're.
- 4:33We're going to be posting a lot.
- 4:35That's exciting.
- 4:36I will say of all my, you know, Cynthia Rowley pieces, I have so many favorites, but I feel like it's timeless in a lot of ways.
- 4:44Like, there are pieces of yours that I've had that I can pull back into my wardrobe, you know, here and there, like, and I love that there's like a real workability to your, to your designs and your collection.
- 4:57So is that for you, something that is always in the back of your head when you're designing, or do you always go into like a new collection, just fresh and, and you know, without like anything kind of that
- 5:09you're thinking about before?
- 5:11Thank you for that.
- 5:14We don't really do collections.
- 5:17We don't really work like that.
- 5:19We design, make, and ship every day because we're an omnichannel brand.
- 5:24So we have to keep, you know, nobody.
- 5:26And people don't shop like that.
- 5:28Nobody goes like, oh, it's September time for my Fall collection, wardrobe shopping or whatever.
- 5:35You know, we don't.
- 5:37We don't work like that.
- 5:38We just make a lot of cool stuff all the time, and we might put it all together to show in a collection, but it's really constant creation all the time.
- 5:57And I think it's really just like, what.
- 6:01I've worked with the same team for so long, and it's really kind of like what we're feeling now after, like, spending a lot of time with these archive pieces.
- 6:10We're like, you know, maybe we should see how that would have.
- 6:15Would evolve now.
- 6:17You know, never the same, but like an evolution, you know, so when you're.
- 6:22Looking back at those pieces and, you know, especially over, you know, the years of the shows, what's something that really stands out to you that you've learned about yourself?
- 6:33Not necessarily about the fashion aspect, but you as a woman kind of going through this whole evolution.
- 6:40It's definitely like, I am who I am.
- 6:43You know, there's always this little.
- 6:46It's always sporty, but always kind of pretty and sexy.
- 6:49Always a tiny wink or sense of humor, something daring or risk taking.
- 6:55I mean, I think these are all things that like, hap.
- 7:00Hopefully, hopefully happy, you know, and make other people happy.
- 7:04I think they're all things that are like, part of the DNA of the brand, but they're authentic because it's part of the DNA of me and, you know, the people I've been lucky enough to work with for so
- 7:15long.
- 7:16And it's just natural.
- 7:18It's just natural.
- 7:20So, yeah, it just comes to you, right?
- 7:22I just want to.
- 7:23So what.
- 7:24What is inspiring you right now in particular?
- 7:26Like, are there things.
- 7:27Are there kind of, you know, things that are going on in life right now that you're looking towards or, like, what are the things that really kind of excite you?
- 7:38Well, I do love sports, and I feel like that's been sort of infiltrating the pretty, you know, so, like, some of our pretty stuff has, like, a little bit more of a sportier kind of edge, I think.
- 7:58Been thinking about a little surrealism I've been thinking about.
- 8:03You know, it's never.
- 8:05It's never one thing.
- 8:07Yeah, it's always just like a billion references, a billion experiences.
- 8:14And, you know, and because we get to design every day, you get to have an.
- 8:22An idea, an inspiration, like a vision, and make it a reality on the daily, you know, so multiple times a day.
- 8:32So it's much easier to experiment because, you know, it's such a fast track.
- 8:41So the so the influences can be coming, like, all the time from all different places.
- 8:52You know, I'm so glad you brought up experimentation, because I think that's so important with style, you know, and how our personal style evolves.
- 9:00Right.
- 9:01Because, you know, what worked in our 20s, maybe it evolves, but maybe we're taking risks.
- 9:06But I feel like a lot of times women in midlife sort of get stuck and, like, are afraid to take risks or, you know, they've got changing bodies, and, you know, there.
- 9:16There are all these different factors to contend with.
- 9:20So what do you say to women in midlife that are maybe, you know, maybe want to take a little fashion risk or maybe want to, you know, update their wardrobe?
- 9:30Like, what.
- 9:31What would you say to a woman like that that might feel stuck?
- 9:34I mean, I think just try one thing and, you know, branch out once and see.
- 9:42I mean, I don't know.
- 9:44That's.
- 9:44It's hard for me because I feel like I want to try everything, and I don't really care if people think, you know, it's too short or it's.
- 9:59Too tight or whatever.
- 10:01Like, I just.
- 10:02I want to try it out, you know, I just want take it for a test run.
- 10:08And, you know, I mean, I think there's a million options.
- 10:14It's never.
- 10:15Okay.
- 10:16The number one thing.
- 10:17This is what is hard to talk about when you talk about inspiration or timelessness or any of that.
- 10:23Like, there is no one trend.
- 10:27Like, there's no trend.
- 10:28You can't.
- 10:29There's nothing.
- 10:30There's.
- 10:31Women shouldn't be thinking like, oh, I can't wear that.
- 10:36They should be thinking, like, they should be curious and thinking about what can they wear and not trying to be something just because it seems popular or something.
- 10:51Just be curious about what.
- 10:54Like, everyone has, like, certain assets that they wanted focus on and whatever it is, you know, then go in that route.
- 11:05But it's like there's a million different options and a million.
- 11:10And there's no trends, and there's no.
- 11:12There's so many different ways that you can experiment and look different and look exciting and, you know, whatever you want to look sophisticated, young, old.
- 11:24I don't know.
- 11:25Whatever it is.
- 11:28Absolutely.
- 11:29That's the fun of being a woman, you know, is that you get to decide on the daily or multiple times a day.
- 11:37Absolutely.
- 11:38You know, you really made a career out of helping women be seen, you know, So I think, like, a lot of times, fashion doesn't get that and style doesn't get that credit, because it really can change the way
- 11:50you walk into a room, you know, it can change how you feel.
- 11:53It's, it's.
- 11:54It shapes your outward appearance, but it also, I think, shapes your inward appearance.
- 12:00So do you find that style and fashion has, like, that sort of deeper rooted sense for people or is.
- 12:08Do you think it's mostly like, on the outside?
- 12:11No, for sure.
- 12:11Like, so I'm going to a.
- 12:14I'm going to a Broadway play tonight.
- 12:16Like, I go to concerts, I go to, you know, I go to all kinds of stuff.
- 12:21Yankees games.
- 12:23It's like, it's chaotic.
- 12:26I want to see everything.
- 12:28But I'm going to a show tonight and I'm actually, I'm excited to see the show, my friends in it, but I'm really excited because I want to wear this skirt that I'm going to wear, this, like, fringe skirt,
- 12:43you know, so I'm.
- 12:44It's like getting excited about an event because you get to wear something special.
- 12:52You know, there's nothing worse than, like, you, you want, you.
- 12:57You're going to something, but you don't have the right thing to wear.
- 13:00You don't have anything to wear, then you dread, you don't want to go to the thing, and then you're missing out on the fun.
- 13:06And that's really sad.
- 13:09So, like, you know, you need to have.
- 13:12It's, it's an investment in your.
- 13:14It's like a shrink or something.
- 13:16It's like an investment in your happiness to have some things that make you feel good when you put it on and, you know, things that work for different occasions, because that's what's going to give you peace of mind
- 13:31and confidence and, you know, have fun.
- 13:37I love my work.
- 13:39I love that I get to have access to all of that.
- 13:43I'm not even, like, clothes crazy.
- 13:46I just, like, might work.
- 13:49And so that is all I wear.
- 13:53I don't think designers should wear other people.
- 13:56I mean, unless it's like an homage to someone.
- 13:59Like, I'm friends with Johnson Hardig from Libertine, and I love his stuff and I would happily wear something to one of his shows to support him.
- 14:12But, like, it's weird going out wearing other people's clothes because they just assume it's yours.
- 14:18And then you're like a fraud, you know, because it's like, I don't know, you're not giving credit to the people that created it.
- 14:26If you're creating it, you need to be, like, showing that you support it.
- 14:36You know, I'm showing that women my age can wear my stuff.
- 14:41You know, I'M like, look, why are you afraid of these cargoes?
- 14:46Why are you afraid of.
- 14:47You know what I mean?
- 14:49So I wear it.
- 14:50My.
- 14:51My daughters wear it.
- 14:52We.
- 14:52We all wear it.
- 14:53I know you were podcasting when we spoke last time with one of your daughters.
- 15:00So I think that's interesting to kind of, you know, fold her into one of the business, the sides of the business, you know, and kind of have this.
- 15:07This show together like you guys were doing.
- 15:11What have you learned about that generation in particular?
- 15:15Because she's Gen Z, right?
- 15:17Is it.
- 15:17She's in that sort of grouping?
- 15:19I think so.
- 15:20And then what's.
- 15:22Then I have a 21 year old.
- 15:24I don't know what that is.
- 15:25But anyway, we all live together.
- 15:27It's very fun.
- 15:29We, like, watch every episode of Love island and, you know, you know, I mean, we know everything there is to know.
- 15:36Like, we're on social.
- 15:37We're all on social media doing stuff together.
- 15:41We're all like, there's no.
- 15:43It's very seamless.
- 15:46The intergenerational part of our relationship is very seamless because sometimes I act, you know, I just like, right there with them at Surf Lodge sometimes.
- 16:01And, you know, not in a weird way, but, like, I love stuff like that.
- 16:06You know, I have a.
- 16:09I have a.
- 16:12People say hanging out with me is like putting a fork in an electrical socket.
- 16:16So I go, just go, go, go.
- 16:21So evitably.
- 16:24They may be a part of that, you know, somewhere along the way or not.
- 16:30You know, we.
- 16:32We just.
- 16:33We all three have a lot of fun, so that's so fun.
- 16:37So what do you think from, like, a parenting perspective?
- 16:40What do you think you did right, that, you know, helped with the closeness that you guys all have together?
- 16:48Like, what are some of the things you think that that worked well?
- 16:52Well, I don't think there was any, like, real strategy.
- 16:59I come from, like, a really loving household, you know, in a small town, and it was just, you know, my mom was always there for me, and so I feel like I'm always try to be there for my
- 17:12girls.
- 17:13And we go on big adventures and we, you know, we just laugh and like to hang out together.
- 17:25We, you know, have been through a little bit of a rough time about five years ago, and I think that made us realize, like, how much we appreciate each other and how much happier we are now and how
- 17:46lucky we are.
- 17:47And so I think it's a combination of all of that.
- 17:52Okay, so it kind of, like, all kind of came together.
- 17:54Was there ever, like, a terrible teenage period or did you kind of get lucky?
- 17:59And by.
- 18:00Honestly, people always ask me that and I really missed that whole thing.
- 18:06I don't know why, but they weren't like that.
- 18:11I promise you, I'm not delusional.
- 18:14You know, there's like a one or two incidences, but really, knock wood.
- 18:22I don't know how it happened, but we did not.
- 18:26I did not have any real drama with them.
- 18:31I'm not like, I'm not a drama person, really.
- 18:35I mean, you know, I.
- 18:39Especially with them, like, I'm just so grateful.
- 18:42I was like, old.
- 18:43I was an old mom, so I was like, oh, my God, this is a miracle, you know, so I've always been grateful that they're in my life.
- 18:54And so, yeah, I try to, yes, take it easy on them and they take it easy on me.
- 19:02I love that.
- 19:03You know what?
- 19:03Here for it.
- 19:04I'm also in the geriatric mom group, and I think.
- 19:07I think it's actually a really good thing because we've lived some life, right, and we've kind of gone through a lot of things by the time we become mothers.
- 19:16And I just think it works to our advantage.
- 19:19Personally, I'm.
- 19:20I'm very happy.
- 19:22I'm very grateful.
- 19:24And, you know, would I have started a little earlier?
- 19:28Probably.
- 19:28I just didn't have the circumstances to do that.
- 19:35So I was.
- 19:36I feel lucky I got to do it when I.
- 19:39When I did it, you know, absolutely.
- 19:42Was it.
- 19:42Did you ever feel becoming a mom, was that ever competitive with work for you or were you able to kind of separate the two?
- 19:49No, I just, I honestly, I think, like, again, it wasn't like anything that I really, like, strategized about.
- 19:56Like, I was just working my arse off and just like, working so hard every day.
- 20:02I mean, like, I still do, but, like.
- 20:04And time was going by and I wasn't realizing, I guess, like, that it was sort of like now or never kind of thing.
- 20:15And kind of when I realized was when my husband.
- 20:20I didn't get married Till I was 30, and then my husband died when I was 34.
- 20:25So at that would have been the time that probably I would have started or at least be thinking about.
- 20:33But then after that, I really couldn't even think about, like, anything for years.
- 20:42And then when I finally was in a place where I, you know, the circumstances were right to maybe get pregnant, it was.
- 20:53It was.
- 20:55Yeah, it was late in the game.
- 20:57So thank God it worked.
- 20:59And then, thank God, with a little help from the medical world, it worked a second Time.
- 21:06That's amazing.
- 21:07And you have your two.
- 21:08Two girls, you know, so it's, you know, it's like you can't really, you can't.
- 21:15I wouldn't.
- 21:15I don't know.
- 21:16You know, I don't know.
- 21:17It just.
- 21:21It's a hard thing to plan.
- 21:22A lot of people plan it.
- 21:24It's not like.
- 21:26It wasn't like I thought, oh, I have to dedicate everything I've got to my work, so therefore I can't start a family.
- 21:38I always wanted a family, but I also love my work and, you know, just other circ, you know, extenuating circumstances, sort of throwing a wrench into things.
- 21:54So.
- 21:55Yeah, absolutely, absolutely.
- 21:57I know.
- 21:57It's interesting that with time, you know, time doesn't always end up on our side.
- 22:02You know, it's kind of one of those things where you're traveling down this path.
- 22:06And I know for me, I was just kind of like, okay, do I take that turn here or do I go straight?
- 22:12You know, and it's.
- 22:13You can take so many different ways and different routes, but it.
- 22:17Ultimately, I think that where we end up, you know, is where we're supposed to be.
- 22:22So, you know, looking back, do you have.
- 22:25Do you regret anything along the way or do you kind of feel that same way where it's, you know, you've kind of built the way and where you're supposed to be right now?
- 22:36I think, I think it's better to have no regrets.
- 22:41I don't really.
- 22:44I feel.
- 22:45I feel lucky.
- 22:48Yeah, I don't, I don't think that's.
- 22:50I don't like to look back.
- 22:53I'm very optimistic and I.
- 23:00So I.
- 23:01You can't really have regrets and be optimistic.
- 23:04I also think in.
- 23:06As a designer and as a creator, it's sort of intrinsically optimistic because you're imagining something that you believe is going to be amazing in the future.
- 23:21So it's like part of the process, the part of the creative process is to be optimistic and to be forward thinking.
- 23:32So I don't really think back and regret.
- 23:36I love that.
- 23:37I love that that's part of the DNA for you, the optimism and like, you know, kind of just looking forward.
- 23:43Because I think a lot of women in midlife, you know, like some of the friends that I've spoken with say that they, you know, feel like they are looking back.
- 23:51You know, they are thinking about like, shoulda, woulda, coulda, like, why didn't I do this, why didn't I do that?
- 23:57But, you know, it's.
- 23:58It's a hard place, right?
- 24:00You're kind of in this, like, zone where it's just, you know, you.
- 24:03You.
- 24:04You've lived life, but you still got a lot of life to live, you know?
- 24:07So I love that, you know, optimism has really guided you in this process.
- 24:12Where does that optimism come from for you?
- 24:14What do you, like, credit that to?
- 24:17You mean, way back when, before the creative process, kind of the.
- 24:23Yeah.
- 24:23However, it kind of came for you, like, what kind of keeps you looking forward?
- 24:33I.
- 24:34I mean, I think it's the.
- 24:36The need to create.
- 24:40I'm just always thinking, oh, it's like, you can always have a dream if that's your job.
- 24:49It's like, just you're always able to use your imagination and dream, and that's.
- 24:57That's pretty optimistic, I would say.
- 25:00It is.
- 25:01It is.
- 25:01And it's something.
- 25:02Like, it feels like there's always something that you're.
- 25:05You're.
- 25:06Like a goal or something you're striving for next.
- 25:08Like, it never stops.
- 25:10Which is, I think, really important to kind of always look forward to things like that.
- 25:15I mean, that is part of the problem, that it never stops.
- 25:19I'm like, there's no end.
- 25:21There's no finish line.
- 25:23There's no.
- 25:24Just keeps going, just keep grinding.
- 25:27Just stay in that hamster wheel.
- 25:30It's really.
- 25:31It is really, like a little bit.
- 25:34But it's exciting because things, you know, there's new challenges, new opportunities, new categories, new ideas and new partners and new everything.
- 25:44And that's always exciting, right?
- 25:50And on the flip side, would you even really be happy if you weren't.
- 25:54Doing what you were doing?
- 25:55You know, like, if retirement came or anything like that, you wouldn't be happy, probably.
- 26:00There's no such thing.
- 26:01I have no off switch.
- 26:02That's the problem in both my personal life and my work life.
- 26:12Yeah, I like that, though.
- 26:14You want that spark plug around.
- 26:17So what do you do when you want to shut it off?
- 26:19Is there, like, something you like to do to, like, kind of relax or.
- 26:22Kind of.
- 26:22Or is there really no relaxation?
- 26:24I don't relax.
- 26:25I actually don't relax.
- 26:27The only time I relax is watching dating reality shows with my girls.
- 26:32And sometimes it's, like, so relaxing that I fall asleep and they're like, mommy, Mommy.
- 26:37Right?
- 26:38But that's the only thing.
- 26:40But I do love them.
- 26:41I'm so hooked on all of them.
- 26:43But no, I don't.
- 26:47There's no.
- 26:48I.
- 26:49I always have said there's no me time.
- 26:53Really, I'm not that kind of Person.
- 26:56Like, I'm at work with.
- 26:57Like, I'm looking down from the mezzanine at everybody now.
- 27:02Like, there's a lot of people here.
- 27:05There's always people at my house.
- 27:07It's just like, I don't.
- 27:11I'm not like a.
- 27:12Like, oh, I need some space.
- 27:14I'm not that person.
- 27:16I always like to take it up a notch.
- 27:19We love that.
- 27:20Okay.
- 27:21That's fun.
- 27:22Like, you, you're.
- 27:23You're like the life of the party.
- 27:24Like, people want to be around you.
- 27:26I can see that.
- 27:27Get people wound up.
- 27:28For sure.
- 27:30Yeah, for sure.
- 27:31So are you spending a lot of time in New York?
- 27:33Like, most of the time?
- 27:34Like, are you going out?
- 27:35Like, what are you doing, like, if you're not at the office?
- 27:40Well, I walk to and from work every day, which is about.
- 27:43I end up clocking about five miles a day.
- 27:47And I try to walk everywhere and.
- 27:51But I work.
- 27:52I work until pretty late.
- 27:57There's a million events.
- 27:59There's like, movie.
- 28:01I'm going to arrest my friend's restaurant opening tomorrow.
- 28:04My friends play Broadway, play tonight.
- 28:07Like a concert.
- 28:09Like, there's always a.
- 28:10I mean, that's.
- 28:11Why do we live in New York if you're not, like, trying to see and experience everything?
- 28:18And I have so many good friends that have, like, stuck by me when, like, things were hard.
- 28:27And, you know, and my squad is great.
- 28:34Girls are great.
- 28:35It's just, we have, you know, we go in the summer to Montauk.
- 28:41We have a store there.
- 28:42And, you know, I'm also there.
- 28:44And so we go there and act silly, you know, and.
- 28:54And then there's just always something in the city.
- 28:57I play charades at my friend's house sometimes.
- 29:00Like, it's really, you know, with the actors, and it's really fun.
- 29:04There's just always a lot to do.
- 29:08Yeah.
- 29:09Oh, my gosh.
- 29:09Absolutely.
- 29:10I love that you brought up your girlfriends, too, because I think that my girlfriends have carried me through so much, and that sense of community is so important.
- 29:20So what do you.
- 29:21What do your closest girlfriends mean to you?
- 29:24Well, I have girl and guy friends.
- 29:26Girl, guy, gay, straight, like, all totally.
- 29:32We always love our games.
- 29:33I just, you know, I have a really full, you know, happy group of friends that all mixes and everybody's like, has something interesting, and it's.
- 29:50It's really exciting.
- 29:52I, I, you know, I show up for them, they show up for me.
- 29:58My one friend always texts me, what's up?
- 30:01Ride or die.
- 30:02We're.
- 30:03We're each other's ride or die.
- 30:06And yeah, it's just.
- 30:10I'm like, we really appreciate each other.
- 30:14Yeah, it's great to have sounding boards like that.
- 30:17You need them.
- 30:18You need them, you know, you really do.
- 30:22So what are the things that you think they could be like, personality traits or even habits that you have that really have helped with the longevity of your career and all the success that you've had?
- 30:36Are there things that you've always sort of done that have kept you on this really amazing path that you've been on?
- 30:42I mean, I.
- 30:44Again, I know I've been very lucky, but I think I work really hard.
- 30:52That's the thing.
- 30:53Like, I don't know how to not work hard.
- 30:59That's.
- 31:00It's like, I just don't know any other way to be.
- 31:04So I don't.
- 31:05Like, I'm here on Fridays in the summer, like, it's ridiculous.
- 31:09But then I go out to Montauk and I have 48 hours of insanity and then I'm back on Monday, you know, So I think my commitment to my job is like, unending.
- 31:27You know, I will like, do it or die trying.
- 31:30And I'm always like, trying to, like, think of ways to do something in a different way and learn something new and work with different people.
- 31:51And, you know, I think it's like, I think this is such a gift that I have.
- 31:56This thing that allows me to like, meet so many different people and have access to so many different ideas, from art to technology to science, to like, nature, to like, crazy sports.
- 32:14I make all the survival suits for the guy that surfed the 100 foot wave.
- 32:18That's like such a gift.
- 32:20Lindsey Von's, you know, ski helmet.
- 32:23Like, it's just like cr.
- 32:25That is a gift to be able to meet and, and think and learn about their world and see if I can maybe like, add a little tiny bit to what they've, what they're doing and, you know, and that's
- 32:45fun.
- 32:45So I think it's like that constantly willing, the constant willingness to try something, like, to think, like, think how can.
- 33:02That's really cool.
- 33:03Is there any way, like, we could help?
- 33:06Could we be involved in that?
- 33:08Like, it's like that kind of thing, you know, like we.
- 33:14Is there anything we could do for, like, to try to learn about that, you know?
- 33:21Absolutely, absolutely.
- 33:22Staying open and, and trying new things, which is so important.
- 33:27But what do you do when things don't go your way?
- 33:29Like, if there's, you know, maybe something in business that didn't work out or in your personal life, even like what?
- 33:35What.
- 33:36How do you deal with, like, failure?
- 33:38Essentially, I always say, like, you know, someone slams the door, you crawl in the window.
- 33:44You know, that's, like, what I've been doing my whole life.
- 33:47And I'm, like, relentless.
- 33:50Like, I won't take no for an answer, but sometimes you gotta take no for an answer, and then you gotta pivot, fail, pivot, pivot, pivot.
- 34:00You know, whatever it takes.
- 34:02And, you know, maybe work twice as hard.
- 34:06Maybe ask someone for a favor that you really don't want to, like, have to do that.
- 34:14But I'll just make myself do it.
- 34:17I'll just do it.
- 34:18You know, the sweaty stuff.
- 34:20I'm willing to do anything.
- 34:21Like, I don't.
- 34:23I'm not, you know, bougie about anything.
- 34:30Like, do anything, you know?
- 34:32So when you fail, you have to be willing to, like, do.
- 34:37Think about it in a different way.
- 34:39Reinvent yourself.
- 34:41Do whatever it takes to maybe go in a different direction.
- 34:45I mean, I always think it's a blessing.
- 34:48I try.
- 34:49That's the way I.
- 34:50That's my survival mechanism is like, if I.
- 34:55If something fails, whether I've done it, somebody rejects something, there must be a reason, and there must be something else waiting, you know, to happen.
- 35:09So what else could it be?
- 35:11And where can I focus my energy and, you know, think in a different way?
- 35:16So, no, those are great points.
- 35:19You know, I find, too, that it is so hard for me to ask for favors from people, and I don't know where that comes from, necessarily.
- 35:29I don't know if that was just something that along the way got ingrained or if that's a thing.
- 35:34Like, maybe at this time of life, it's just harder to ask.
- 35:37I don't know.
- 35:38But I actually was thinking about that the other day.
- 35:41I'm like, why is it so hard to ask for a favor?
- 35:44So I think it's really interesting that you're bringing that up.
- 35:47I mean, is there a reason for you why that might be more difficult?
- 35:51Or, like, if you're just, like, that person that's, like, constantly doing, doing, doing, then, you know, it's hard to maybe ask for a favor and then put them on the spot, you know?
- 36:03Yeah.
- 36:05It's also kind of vulnerable, too, to put yourself out there like that.
- 36:08Right.
- 36:09Yeah.
- 36:10Which vulnerability is not, my friend.
- 36:12I'm, like, working on it, but it's hard, you know, are deep.
- 36:16If something fails, like, just bail.
- 36:18Like, that's what I mean in my personal life.
- 36:21Just my thing is, like, if it's not working and you Try and it's still not working.
- 36:31Fail.
- 36:32Like, do not suffer.
- 36:34Do not suffer emotional abuse.
- 36:36Do not suffer through something for some made up reason that you think you have to stay.
- 36:45Stick around, get out, you're gonna be happier.
- 36:53It takes.
- 36:53It might take a while, but in the end, I think more your self is for your self esteem and everything else.
- 37:01I think that that can be applied too to both, you know, platonic friends and romantic partners, you know?
- 37:06Right, totally.
- 37:08Because I don't know, but.
- 37:09But the older I get, I feel like my friends even like thin out a bit.
- 37:13Like I'm kind of seeing, you know, who's really the.
- 37:16The people who are the people that I really spend the time with, you know?
- 37:21Yeah.
- 37:21I mean, sometimes it just happens organically, but rip the band aid off.
- 37:26We would be remiss if we did not talk about Hollywood because you have definitely dressed some of the biggest, you know, actors, models.
- 37:35Like, I think the last time we spoke, we had a funny little.
- 37:38You were telling me a story about a certain actress.
- 37:42I could tell the story because it is funny.
- 37:45Pretty funny, I guess.
- 37:49My friend is a painter named Will Cotton, and he paints.
- 37:56We've collaborated on things and he does these paintings that, you know, shows at galleries around the world of these women wearing like confections, like a cake on their head.
- 38:10Or like he paints like very magical, imaginative, fantasy kind of paintings, but portraits.
- 38:20So Katy Perry's album was coming out and she has so many.
- 38:27I can't remember what number it was.
- 38:29But he was like, I'm doing.
- 38:32I'm gonna paint her for the COVID And I was thinking about a cupcake dress.
- 38:39Like a silver cupcake, cupcake cup made into a dress.
- 38:45So I was like, of course.
- 38:47Got it.
- 38:48So I made the dress and I got to his studio for the portrait sitting where he was going to take her photo and then eventually paint the portrait.
- 38:59And I was like, okay, here it is, here it is.
- 39:03And I was like getting it out of the bag and like from behind me.
- 39:08And by the time I turn around, Katy Perry is stark naked.
- 39:13Like, naked naked.
- 39:17Oh.
- 39:18Nothing left to the imagination.
- 39:22But let me tell you, she looked beautiful.
- 39:27Like perfect.
- 39:29And I was just like, here you go.
- 39:31Well, yeah, let me just help you get this on, you know.
- 39:35But it was like she was not shot.
- 39:37She.
- 39:38That was the first time I met her.
- 39:40And she was just like, you know, I don't know, I thought that was kind of funny.
- 39:45Yeah, I mean, gosh, she probably.
- 39:47That's probably like all in a day's work for Her.
- 39:50Right.
- 39:50Getting naked and just, like, having people dress her and, like, gorgeous.
- 39:54She looked like perfection.
- 39:57The next chapter.
- 39:58What's coming up?
- 39:59Like, what.
- 39:59What are you most excited for?
- 40:02I mean, every day I feel like I'm excited to be here.
- 40:05It's really, like, if there's endless.
- 40:11Really, there's endless projects.
- 40:13I was thinking, like, right now, like, do I start naming stuff off.
- 40:17Not really.
- 40:18I think it's just.
- 40:18Stay tuned.
- 40:20Follow us on Social.
- 40:22And, you know, it's really.
- 40:26There's a lot of collabs coming out over the next a few months.
- 40:33And as well as.
- 40:36I don't know, there's, like, so much stuff.
- 40:38We have our surf camp coming up in two weeks.
- 40:40We have.
- 40:41There's, like, a.
- 40:42So much stuff.
- 40:43It's a lot.
- 40:44Just f.
- 40:45Just follow.
- 40:46There's no time off.
- 40:47You know, there's no.
- 40:48Let me just get my head above water.
- 40:50Let me just take a break for a couple months.
- 40:52Nope.
- 40:54You know, this is not.
- 40:57That's not part of it.
- 40:58Absolutely.
- 40:59As I like to say, we fly the plane as we're building it.
- 41:03You know, there's no Right.
- 41:05We don't step off.
- 41:06We just.
- 41:06We just keep going forward.
- 41:07We just keep going forward.
- 41:09I tell you one.
- 41:09This is actually a really funny story.
- 41:11I just thought of when I was.
- 41:14They asked me, would.
- 41:16Would I ever be on Jeopardy?
- 41:18Like, Celebrity Jeopardy, Right?
- 41:20So I was like, yeah, definitely, because I've always wanted to be on a game show, but I kind of had something more like Hollywood Squares in mind or something easy.
- 41:28Then I was like, how do I study for all the knowledge in the world?
- 41:31I'm like, okay, this is terrifying.
- 41:34I'm playing against two geniuses, and it's for charity, so it doesn't really matter.
- 41:39But anyway, so we're.
- 41:40I'm playing, and it's really hard because you got a buzz.
- 41:43And so I see the board, and I'm like, okay, here we go.
- 41:49This is a setup.
- 41:50They must have done this just for me.
- 41:53The header is from the Runway.
- 41:57So I'm like, all right, take.
- 42:00Like, I'll take from the Runway for a million dollars.
- 42:05Whatever.
- 42:05The highest one was a thousand or something.
- 42:08And the.
- 42:09And Alex Trebek is like, okay, Cynthia, this Boeing 747 was first launched in what year?
- 42:19And I was like, what?
- 42:22Because it's an airplane.
- 42:25Oh, Runway.
- 42:27Runway.
- 42:28I kind of feel like we need to see you more on tv, though.
- 42:31Tell Bravo would you do it?
- 42:33Of course.
- 42:34Wait, what about Roni?
- 42:36Real Housewives of New York.
- 42:37That's what would You.
- 42:38That's what people say.
- 42:40I would do it.
- 42:41I think it'd be fun.
- 42:42You.
- 42:43You would do it.
- 42:44You want to.
- 42:45Okay, we need to let Andy Cohen know.
- 42:48Does he know this?
- 42:49No.
- 42:50Oh, my God.
- 42:51Andy Cohen.
- 42:52We're calling you right after the show.
- 42:54Like, that would be him on his Instagram.
- 42:57I will.
- 42:58Oh, my God.
- 42:59Hello.
- 43:00You would save the show?
- 43:02We got to save the show.
- 43:04Well, I would do that.
- 43:05You know what?
- 43:06I wouldn't do the thing that everybody has asked because Kit was on the Bachelor.
- 43:11Everybody says, why aren't you on Golden Bachelor?
- 43:14And you know why?
- 43:15Because I don't want the guy.
- 43:17That's why.
- 43:20Wait, do you skew younger when you date?
- 43:22I don't know if I can reveal that information.
- 43:25You could probably best.
- 43:27My.
- 43:29My bet is yes.
- 43:30We need somebody with, like, a lot of good energy.
- 43:33100%.
- 43:33Your kids are like, your teenage boyfriend's waiting for you outside.
- 43:37I'm like, okay, thanks, guys.
- 43:42He's like, wait, who am I here to pick up?
- 43:44He's like, daughter.
- 43:44Daughter, mom.
- 43:45They just joke around.
- 43:47Anyway.
- 43:48What?
- 43:49Why not?
- 43:50You know why not?
- 43:51I mean, I say I'm here for it, so hallelujah.
- 43:55Do it, do it, do it.
- 43:56Did you happen to catch Jenna Lyons on Roni when she was on it?
- 44:01She's a different person.
- 44:02She's a different person than me.
- 44:04I love her.
- 44:05She's great.
- 44:06So smart, gorgeous.
- 44:09Very, like, you know, I'm a little more of a loose cannon, I would say, which is why.
- 44:17Might be a bad idea, but whatever.
- 44:20At this point, or the best idea, we're gonna.
- 44:25I'm gonna be DMing Andy Cohen on that again.
- 44:29So, Cynthia, what advice would you give your 25 year old self?
- 44:33I mean, I didn't really know anything when I was 25.
- 44:36I was really naive and really, like, clueless about everything in the fashion business.
- 44:44And guess what?
- 44:45It was a time when you couldn't get information.
- 44:49Like, we had freaking Rolodexes, you know what I mean?
- 44:52And telephones.
- 44:53Like.
- 44:54Like, there was no, if you're lost, you're lost, you know, like, there was no.
- 45:00You know, there wasn't any way to learn.
- 45:02So it just.
- 45:05Everything was harder, but so, you know, you had to work, work harder because everything was harder.
- 45:13And now I think it's so much easier and more fun and just different, you know, it's not easier, really, but it's different.
- 45:23Was there like kind of a.
- 45:24A lesson or a turning point in midlife, specifically?
- 45:28Spend as much time with your kids as you can.
- 45:31Yeah.
- 45:32That's a big one.
- 45:33That's a big one.
- 45:33I mean, that.
- 45:34That goes so quickly.
- 45:35Say yes to every opportunity that you can because you know what no is going to look like.
- 45:44But when you say yes, you can always say no later.
- 45:51But no is a real dead end.
- 45:54And I also think it's a little bit of an attitude thing, so trying to appreciate all the opportunities you're given.
- 46:07Oh, this is a good quote.
- 46:09Billie Jean King said, pressure is a privilege.
- 46:13Isn't that a good one?
- 46:15That's a really good one.
- 46:17That's a really.
- 46:18If I have the chance to do something super fun, go, why the hell.
- 46:23Not, like, do it, you know?
- 46:25Thank you so much, Cynthia.
- 46:27It's been amazing.
- 46:28I loved having you on and it was so fun.
- 46:32And everyone can find you at Cynthia Rowley on social media.
- 46:36Is there anywhere else you would like people to go to keep up with you?
- 46:41I mean, just check our website, check our socials, and visit any stores you might living near.
- 46:49And yeah, DM me.
- 46:51If.
- 46:52For any.
- 46:52If you have any thing to say.
- 46:55DM me.
- 46:56Yes, absolutely.
- 46:58Thank you so much, Cynthia.
- 46:59Great pleasure, Great care.
- 47:01What I loved most about this conversation is that Cynthia reminded us something we all need to hear.
- 47:07Reinvention doesn't have to be loud sometimes it's simply having the confidence to keep evolving while staying true to yourself.
- 47:14Whether we're talking about fashion, creativity, confidence, or building a life that's authentically yours, her message was clear.
- 47:21There are no expiration dates on curiosity, ambition, or personal style.
