- 1:47Speaker 1: Last January, in a span of four weeks, the Bengals
- 1:49Speaker 1: pulled off two upset wins over the Chiefs that rank
- 1:53Speaker 1: among the most thrilling wins in team history. In Game one,
- 1:56Speaker 1: the Bengals trailed fourteen nothing twenty one Evan and twenty
- 2:01Speaker 1: eight fourteen before rallying to win at a walk off
- 2:04Speaker 1: field goal at the end of regulation by Evan McPherson.
- 2:07Speaker 1: In Game two, the Bengals trailed twenty one to three
- 2:10Speaker 1: with less than two minutes to go in the half
- 2:12Speaker 1: before fighting back again. This time, the game went to
- 2:16Speaker 1: overtime before a Von Bell interception led to another game
- 2:21Speaker 1: winner by Money Matt four years ago. He was a
- 2:24Speaker 1: senior in high school in tiny Fort Payne, Alabama. Now,
- 2:28Speaker 1: the Bengal Super Bowl chances rest on his right foot.
- 2:31Speaker 1: The kick is up. Yeah, yeah, good coffin nails. Bam bam.
- 2:41Speaker 1: That is unblievable. The Cincinnati Bengals bound from behind on
- 2:47Speaker 1: the road. Unbelievable. Dan, it is no fluke. It is
- 2:53Speaker 1: a fact. The Cincinnati Bengals are headed to Super Bowl
- 2:59Speaker 1: fifty six. They just redefined the word resilient. The winds
- 3:04Speaker 1: stopped Patrick Mahomes from getting to the Super Bowl for
- 3:07Speaker 1: the third consecutive year, and one of the biggest reasons
- 3:10Speaker 1: why is that Joe Burrow matched him throw for throw
- 3:13Speaker 1: in their two meetings. Burrow through for six hundred ninety
- 3:16Speaker 1: six yards Mahome through for five thirty four. Joe had
- 3:20Speaker 1: more touchdown passes six to five and fewer interceptions two
- 3:25Speaker 1: to one. Here's what Tyler Boyd had to say this
- 3:27Speaker 1: week about the matchup between the twenty seven year old
- 3:30Speaker 1: Mahomes and the twenty five year old Burrow. I think
- 3:33Speaker 1: I kind of looked back of it as like a
- 3:36Speaker 1: Manning and Brady you know, because you kind of can't
- 3:40Speaker 1: stop him. You know, it's gonna come down to whoever
- 3:43Speaker 1: um excel and secondvantage of their opportunities in drives, you know,
- 3:48Speaker 1: and score points, you know, with these are the type
- 3:50Speaker 1: of games when we play. We got to care of
- 3:53Speaker 1: the football and um, don't don't don't, don't turn it over?
- 3:56Speaker 1: Who's manning and who's Brady? I mean, is Burrow in
- 4:04Speaker 1: my homes? You know, I wouldn't compare them, but I
- 4:06Speaker 1: know those are two guys that you know has records
- 4:09Speaker 1: for the fastest two quarterbacks to reach ten thousand yards.
- 4:13Speaker 1: So I mean it's kind of hard to stop Burrow.
- 4:15Speaker 1: It's kind of hard to stop Mahomes. So I mean
- 4:18Speaker 1: at the end of the day, I think Burrow won
- 4:20Speaker 1: up two up teams. So yeah, so whichever one you
- 4:23Speaker 1: want to pick, whoever got the most wins and there
- 4:25Speaker 1: you go. Sunday's game will have a huge TV audience
- 4:28Speaker 1: at four twenty five on CBS, and this week I
- 4:31Speaker 1: checked an item off my interviewing bucket list by catching
- 4:35Speaker 1: up with a play by play announcer for this week's game.
- 4:39Speaker 1: Remember the famous Saturday Night Live bit when Chris Farley
- 4:42Speaker 1: is interviewing Paul McCartney, and he's so starstruck that he
- 4:45Speaker 1: can barely get out of question. Well, this interview might
- 4:49Speaker 1: go the same way as I have the opportunity to
- 4:51Speaker 1: visit with one of my broadcasting heroes, Jim Nance. Jim,
- 4:55Speaker 1: You and Tony called both Bengals Chiefs games back in January.
- 5:00Speaker 1: Obviously they were thrillers. Have you had this one circled
- 5:03Speaker 1: down the schedule since the NFL schedule came out in May? Absolutely?
- 5:07Speaker 1: And Dan, thank you for that build up. My gosh,
- 5:09Speaker 1: I'm not worthy, but I really truly appreciate you so much.
- 5:13Speaker 1: You're an absolute pros pro and it's an honor to
- 5:17Speaker 1: be on here with you. I've been thinking about this
- 5:19Speaker 1: game since since before the schedule came out, because it
- 5:23Speaker 1: was one of those games I was afraid we might lose.
- 5:25Speaker 1: I wanted to make sure that it landed in our inventory.
- 5:30Speaker 1: So into April when the league did announce what games
- 5:35Speaker 1: are going to go on what date, I was thrilled
- 5:37Speaker 1: to see that we had this in the doubleheader window
- 5:40Speaker 1: to open up December. It's big, it's gigantic, and it's
- 5:43Speaker 1: pretty amazing to be able to have a matchup technically
- 5:46Speaker 1: three times in one calendar year for teams that aren't
- 5:49Speaker 1: even in the same division. I'll be in the same conference,
- 5:51Speaker 1: but it's a rarity, and they have been down to
- 5:55Speaker 1: the wire thrillers the first two and I expect it
- 5:58Speaker 1: will be the same thing come Sunday. So earlier this week,
- 6:01Speaker 1: Tyler Boyd said that Burrow versus Mahomes is the new
- 6:05Speaker 1: version of Brady versus Manning. You called a bunch of
- 6:09Speaker 1: those games. Does this feel similar to you? Yeah? I
- 6:13Speaker 1: think I called somewhere around eleven or twelve of their
- 6:18Speaker 1: seventeen matchups. So you know, the thing that's missing here
- 6:22Speaker 1: is just time. I mean they're still in their twenties.
- 6:26Speaker 1: I mean they're still in their basically in their mid twenties,
- 6:29Speaker 1: so it's a little early to go that far with it.
- 6:33Speaker 1: I appreciate what Tyler's trying to say. The other thing
- 6:37Speaker 1: you have here is you have a lot of really
- 6:40Speaker 1: young stars at that position. You can't take anything away
- 6:44Speaker 1: from what Joe's accomplished so far. It's enormous course Patrick
- 6:47Speaker 1: as well, But you've got Josh Allen sitting out there,
- 6:50Speaker 1: and you know you've got You've got Lamar Jackson and
- 6:53Speaker 1: you've got Justin Herbert and there are others, So it's
- 6:58Speaker 1: it's a little early, but it's on track, I think,
- 7:00Speaker 1: is what he's trying to really say. They're on track
- 7:03Speaker 1: because they're playing in super Bowls and they've played now
- 7:08Speaker 1: in three between them, so yes, it has a chance
- 7:11Speaker 1: to potentially be there if their teams keep winning. And
- 7:14Speaker 1: these guys number nine and number fifteen, they know nothing
- 7:18Speaker 1: but how to win. One of the things I admire
- 7:20Speaker 1: so much about your work is the ability to say
- 7:23Speaker 1: just the right thing in the big moments. And here's
- 7:26Speaker 1: what you said when Evan McPherson hit the field goal
- 7:29Speaker 1: that sent the Bengals to the Super Bowl. This could
- 7:32Speaker 1: be a sentence that a month ago would have sounded incomprehensible.
- 7:37Speaker 1: McPherson from thirty one yards out and Cincinnati has headed
- 7:42Speaker 1: to the super Bowl. The word incomprehensible was perfect. Were
- 7:47Speaker 1: you and Tony just stunned by what you had witnessed?
- 7:51Speaker 1: I think that's fair to say, especially since it was
- 7:53Speaker 1: twenty one to three right before the half, and you've
- 7:56Speaker 1: got Kansas City at home, so you don't expect anything
- 8:00Speaker 1: like that to turn around that quickly. At Arrowhead. I
- 8:03Speaker 1: had interestingly, another twenty one to three lead in an
- 8:07Speaker 1: AFC championship game, And that gets back to your last question.
- 8:11Speaker 1: That was Brady and Manning, and that was in the
- 8:16Speaker 1: first months of two thousand and seven. But in this case,
- 8:20Speaker 1: Indianapolis was the team that was down twenty one to
- 8:22Speaker 1: three and playing at home, so they were able to
- 8:25Speaker 1: come back stitch it together. They kicked the field goal
- 8:28Speaker 1: before the half to make it twenty one to six,
- 8:30Speaker 1: and Peyton led them back to a thirty eight thirty
- 8:33Speaker 1: four victory. So at the time it was the biggest
- 8:36Speaker 1: comeback in championship game history. Only to see the Bengals
- 8:40Speaker 1: all these years later come and do the same thing.
- 8:42Speaker 1: But the Cincinnati wins even more impressive because it was
- 8:45Speaker 1: on the road. It wasn't just any stadium. It was
- 8:47Speaker 1: in the most raucous, highest descibel level stadium supposedly in
- 8:52Speaker 1: the entire league. So it was an amazing achievement. But
- 8:56Speaker 1: you know, you think about their playoff run and how
- 9:00Speaker 1: they beat the Raiders and how they want it Tennessee,
- 9:03Speaker 1: and how they worked their way through these games and
- 9:06Speaker 1: their late season surge, including that regular season matchup at
- 9:10Speaker 1: since against KC. It was. It was a storybook. I mean,
- 9:15Speaker 1: it really was. But you know they're that good that there.
- 9:19Speaker 1: They stumbled out of the gates this year, but seven
- 9:22Speaker 1: out of nine have gone their way since and oh
- 9:25Speaker 1: and two start and they're good. I mean, this team
- 9:28Speaker 1: has really come together earlier than it came together last year. Jim,
- 9:33Speaker 1: after the game, you interviewed Mike Brown on the stage.
- 9:36Speaker 1: And Mike is not Jerry Jones. He's a private person.
- 9:39Speaker 1: He doesn't do a lot of interviews. Have you interacted
- 9:42Speaker 1: with him much over the years, and what did you
- 9:43Speaker 1: think of that moment. I've had some really special times
- 9:48Speaker 1: with him, and he probably doesn't remember them, but I do.
- 9:51Speaker 1: And I've met up with him a few times standing
- 9:54Speaker 1: on the sideline when we've been able to watch practice,
- 9:57Speaker 1: and I've always been intrigued and I've always respect that
- 10:00Speaker 1: the man. I don't think he gets any kind of
- 10:03Speaker 1: due nationally because you said it. He's not a guy
- 10:06Speaker 1: that's going to try to put himself out there and
- 10:08Speaker 1: build up his name. He's not seeking any attention. I'm
- 10:12Speaker 1: not saying the other guys are seeking attention. It's just
- 10:14Speaker 1: he's a background guy. He's a football guy. And I've
- 10:19Speaker 1: always enjoyed him, I really have. And it's just there's
- 10:23Speaker 1: something about him that is so basic, so normal, so
- 10:26Speaker 1: much like the guy next door. I've just I've admired him.
- 10:31Speaker 1: You know, in some ways, I've I tried to model
- 10:34Speaker 1: my career in some of those same principles. You know,
- 10:37Speaker 1: the game is the thing, and not trying to draw
- 10:39Speaker 1: attention on what I'm doing. That's at least what I'm
- 10:41Speaker 1: always internalizing. And I think that's what Mike Brown is
- 10:45Speaker 1: all about. And he's been successful for a long time.
- 10:48Speaker 1: Every team's had lean years, every franchise has. But you know,
- 10:53Speaker 1: the Bengals have had their share of Super Bowl appearances too.
- 10:56Speaker 1: And you know there are a lot of a lot
- 10:58Speaker 1: of teams that we know that have never even gotten
- 11:03Speaker 1: to the game. And anyway, he has put together this
- 11:09Speaker 1: organizations put together a pretty darn good nucleus. Right now,
- 11:13Speaker 1: I'll give you one other example. What he did, what
- 11:17Speaker 1: he did with was Zach, what he did with his
- 11:19Speaker 1: coach to be able to to ride out those first
- 11:23Speaker 1: couple of years and when five or six games the
- 11:27Speaker 1: first two years total. But they have faith that this
- 11:31Speaker 1: was the right guy to lead them and He's impressive
- 11:33Speaker 1: until you got an impressive coach there in Cincinnati. So
- 11:36Speaker 1: Mike saw it, mister Brown saw it, and here they
- 11:40Speaker 1: are and making ready to make another run. We are
- 11:43Speaker 1: visiting with the great Jim Nance. This is not the
- 11:45Speaker 1: first Bengals game that you and Tony have called this year.
- 11:48Speaker 1: You had Bengals Cowboys back in Week two. Cincinnati obviously
- 11:51Speaker 1: fell to oh and two and they lost that game.
- 11:54Speaker 1: They're seven and two cents. What do you think of
- 11:56Speaker 1: the way the Bengals are playing right now? Well, the
- 11:59Speaker 1: big difference I think it's early in the year, Dan,
- 12:01Speaker 1: is that the offensive line has stabilized now and they've
- 12:03Speaker 1: figured it out through good coaching. They have figured out
- 12:06Speaker 1: how to how to build, how to grow, and how
- 12:09Speaker 1: to become a unit in sync in concert with one another.
- 12:14Speaker 1: There have been on some other guys that have stepped up.
- 12:16Speaker 1: What t Higgins did over the last month was pretty impressive.
- 12:20Speaker 1: What Trent Irwin tid stepping in was impressive. What Somaji's
- 12:26Speaker 1: done out of the backfield with with mixing out last
- 12:30Speaker 1: week and the week before that in the Pittsburgh game,
- 12:33Speaker 1: there are a lot of there's a lot of depth there.
- 12:36Speaker 1: I think that's the thing, and they just needed that
- 12:39Speaker 1: offensive line to gel on that side. And you know, defensively,
- 12:43Speaker 1: I think they're they've also found themselves stabilized. They've had
- 12:47Speaker 1: some guys that didn't play earlier in the year that
- 12:50Speaker 1: are playing, you know, a lot of snaps now and
- 12:53Speaker 1: playing some good football. Typically, the day before the game,
- 12:56Speaker 1: the broadcast crew has the opportunity to visit with some
- 12:59Speaker 1: of the coaches and play. Can you describe what a
- 13:02Speaker 1: Joe Burrow Tony Romo meeting is like the meeting of
- 13:06Speaker 1: number Nine's? Uh, it's it's been good. Joe is a
- 13:13Speaker 1: mature guy, you know, for as young as he really is,
- 13:17Speaker 1: and he's you know, he's he's confident, but he's not
- 13:22Speaker 1: over confident. And Tony is one of these just individuals
- 13:27Speaker 1: that likes to build people up. And I love that.
- 13:29Speaker 1: It's one of the many things that I admire about
- 13:31Speaker 1: my teammate. I love the guy myself, and we have
- 13:34Speaker 1: so much fun together. But when he's when he's in
- 13:37Speaker 1: a room with young quarterbacks, he's rooting for him and
- 13:41Speaker 1: I think he wants them to know that he's on
- 13:42Speaker 1: their side, and he likes to just I'd like to
- 13:46Speaker 1: sit back and listen to the two of them talk.
- 13:48Speaker 1: Because Tony, as you could tell, sees everything. By the
- 13:52Speaker 1: way Joe's he's way beyond his years in terms of
- 13:56Speaker 1: like understanding what's going on to field and seeing things
- 13:59Speaker 1: in the game slowing down and all of that. Throws
- 14:03Speaker 1: a beautiful football. I know Tony admires that too, but
- 14:07Speaker 1: it's it's a it's a good meeting of the minds,
- 14:09Speaker 1: it really is. Jimmy famously have a replica of the
- 14:12Speaker 1: Part three seventh hole at Pebble Beach at your home
- 14:16Speaker 1: in California. I understand that Patrick Mahomes has played it.
- 14:20Speaker 1: Did you learn anything about Patrick Mahomes from his visit? Well,
- 14:25Speaker 1: Patrick came out like the week before COVID hit in
- 14:29Speaker 1: twenty twenty, and he was a wonderful guy. Brittany was
- 14:33Speaker 1: with him and we ended up playing two rounds of golf,
- 14:36Speaker 1: real golf, not the golf in my backyard. We played
- 14:38Speaker 1: Cypress Point Club and we played Pebble Beach. The first
- 14:42Speaker 1: hole at Cypress Point is not easy, and he hit
- 14:46Speaker 1: it over the green on a like a severe downhill
- 14:49Speaker 1: lie with a back hole location with the green running
- 14:54Speaker 1: away from him. So to pitch it and keep it
- 14:56Speaker 1: on the green. Already gonna get it on the green.
- 14:58Speaker 1: Once it landed the green, pretty good odds it was
- 15:00Speaker 1: going to run all the way down to the front
- 15:02Speaker 1: off the green, back down the fairway. He pitched it in.
- 15:07Speaker 1: First of all, a home's magic. So thought, oh, that's interesting.
- 15:11Speaker 1: Now I've been playing golf that long. And when we
- 15:14Speaker 1: were playing back then, he didn't hit a driver. He
- 15:16Speaker 1: hit three wood. He did not how to hit his driver,
- 15:18Speaker 1: but the three wood would suffice. I mean, hit that
- 15:20Speaker 1: three wood about three hundred and thirty yards. I'm not kidding.
- 15:23Speaker 1: He could pound it. But then he did come to
- 15:27Speaker 1: the house and hit some balls in the backyard. He
- 15:32Speaker 1: trying desperately to make a hole in one. I have
- 15:34Speaker 1: a huge boulder there that has the names engrave for
- 15:40Speaker 1: those who have made a hole in one guests. I
- 15:42Speaker 1: don't put my own name on there. Of course, I've
- 15:44Speaker 1: hit thousands of balls. There's out of dumb luck. I've
- 15:47Speaker 1: made it a few times. I have been twenty two
- 15:50Speaker 1: holes and one by guests. And Patrick, unfortunately is not
- 15:56Speaker 1: on the Rock of Fame yet. He came close a
- 15:59Speaker 1: couple of times. I've got the video of it. We
- 16:01Speaker 1: had a blast. I will say this is a terrible
- 16:04Speaker 1: name dropping on my part, Dan, but I've had some
- 16:06Speaker 1: really super NFL quarterbacks who have given it their best
- 16:11Speaker 1: shot that just because they love to come out to
- 16:14Speaker 1: Pebble and I spend my summers there and you know
- 16:17Speaker 1: it's a bucket list place. But whether it would be
- 16:20Speaker 1: Patrick or Josh Allen, who's had many a go at,
- 16:23Speaker 1: it hasn't made it justin Herbert Ben, Roethlisberger, Joe Montana.
- 16:30Speaker 1: I mean there are some serious there's some serious talent
- 16:34Speaker 1: that's been up there. Romo made it. He's the only
- 16:40Speaker 1: quarterback that has made it, but there are others too
- 16:44Speaker 1: from around the league that have given it their best.
- 16:47Speaker 1: We haven't had Joe Burrow there. But if Joe ever
- 16:49Speaker 1: hears you know about this, about this little chat, I
- 16:53Speaker 1: hope he those divided and I'm there in February, June,
- 16:57Speaker 1: and July. All he's got to do is call me
- 17:00Speaker 1: and you have my number. He is just starting out
- 17:02Speaker 1: as a golfer, so he might be intimidated, but I
- 17:04Speaker 1: will let him know that the invitation has been extended. Jim,
- 17:09Speaker 1: this isn't my cause. My cleats weekend and you won't
- 17:13Speaker 1: be wearing cleats in the booth, but I know if
- 17:15Speaker 1: you were, what your cause would be. You have been
- 17:19Speaker 1: really involved in the fight against Alzheimer's disease. Can you
- 17:23Speaker 1: describe some of the things that you and your wife
- 17:24Speaker 1: have done well. We opened up a research institute in Houston.
- 17:28Speaker 1: Thank you for bringing that up, Dan, It's truly my cause.
- 17:32Speaker 1: Fifty two weeks a year and virtually every day of
- 17:35Speaker 1: my life, I'm involved with what's going on down at
- 17:38Speaker 1: Houston Methodist Hospital, which is the home of the NANCE
- 17:42Speaker 1: National Alzheimer Center. By the way, the NANCE is for
- 17:45Speaker 1: not the one you're speaking to, but for my dad,
- 17:48Speaker 1: my late father. I named it after my dad. I
- 17:51Speaker 1: wrote the check. I had a vision of how to
- 17:53Speaker 1: open it up, how I wanted this to to have
- 17:56Speaker 1: a place in the world of research and building a
- 18:02Speaker 1: gigantic neurological institute. This is not a foundation. This is
- 18:05Speaker 1: actual bricks and mortar. And I'm more proud of that,
- 18:11Speaker 1: outside of my family goals and wishes, than anything I've
- 18:13Speaker 1: ever done in my life. Is being a part of
- 18:16Speaker 1: the team. I'm not a scientist, I'm not a neurologist,
- 18:22Speaker 1: not a doctor. I can talk it a little bit
- 18:24Speaker 1: for sure about what we're going through and what we're
- 18:26Speaker 1: researching and what trial programs are going through. But I'm
- 18:29Speaker 1: a cheerleader. I try to be a visionary in terms
- 18:32Speaker 1: of bringing people together and helping create funding opportunities. But
- 18:37Speaker 1: the Nance Center, which gives my dad a voice that
- 18:41Speaker 1: he never had. It's being heard around the world and
- 18:46Speaker 1: we have nine trials that are ongoing right now. We
- 18:49Speaker 1: have one that we just recently hit on. It was
- 18:51Speaker 1: in the Wall Street Journal that this was the first
- 18:55Speaker 1: breakthrough discovery in Alzheimer's treatment ever, and we were one
- 19:00Speaker 1: of the few places on the planet that was trusted
- 19:03Speaker 1: with administering that trial at our research institute. So a
- 19:09Speaker 1: lot of NFL involved mcdan, a lot of former players, coaches, etc.
- 19:12Speaker 1: That confidentially reach out to me and want to come
- 19:15Speaker 1: down to the Nance Center to be diagnosed or be
- 19:19Speaker 1: put on a trial and have a treatment program. And yeah,
- 19:24Speaker 1: it's if you want to find out more about it,
- 19:26Speaker 1: Nance Friends dot Org is where you can find about it.
- 19:30Speaker 1: It is my cause, and I'll tell you why it's
- 19:32Speaker 1: my cause. It's it's a it's a it was a
- 19:35Speaker 1: disease that defeated my dad. The most robust personality, life
- 19:40Speaker 1: of the party, kind of guy you could ever see,
- 19:43Speaker 1: and it brought him down to a guy who couldn't
- 19:47Speaker 1: even recognize his own family, stricken at the age of
- 19:49Speaker 1: sixty six. So, as a son is an only son
- 19:52Speaker 1: who carries his name and was bequeathed his voice. I
- 19:57Speaker 1: want his voice to be heard through me, and I
- 20:00Speaker 1: want to be able to say that I was a
- 20:03Speaker 1: part of the team that helped defeat the opponent that
- 20:07Speaker 1: defeated my dad. That is my mission on earth, outside
- 20:11Speaker 1: of my family goals. That's my goal, that's my cause.
- 20:15Speaker 1: That is powerful stuff. Jim, this has been a real
- 20:18Speaker 1: treat for me. I can't thank you enough for doing it.
- 20:21Speaker 1: Have a great game on Sunday. I look forward to it,
- 20:25Speaker 1: probably the first of a few appearances at the Jungle
- 20:28Speaker 1: before this season is over. It's a big one and
- 20:31Speaker 1: this game will dictate how often Tony and I come
- 20:33Speaker 1: back come January. But Dan, great admire view you and
- 20:38Speaker 1: who you are in your work, and let's do this
- 20:40Speaker 1: again the next time we have a Bengals game. That
- 20:43Speaker 1: interview was done via zoom. There are about three people
- 20:46Speaker 1: watching on the Bengals end and when Jim Nance appeared
- 20:49Speaker 1: on the screen. He said, hello friends. It was like
- 20:53Speaker 1: the final round of the Masters was about to begin.

- 21:07Speaker 1: In the first meeting between the Bengals and Chiefs last year,
- 21:10Speaker 1: Jamar Chase had the greatest receiving performance in team history,
- 21:15Speaker 1: with eleven catches for two hundred sixty six yards and
- 21:18Speaker 1: three touchdowns. That was the most yards in a game
- 21:22Speaker 1: by a Bengals receiver and the most ever buy an
- 21:25Speaker 1: NFL rookie. Jamara's missed the last four games with a
- 21:28Speaker 1: hairline hip fracture, but all signs point to him being
- 21:32Speaker 1: back on Sunday. I felt really good last week. I
- 21:35Speaker 1: just want to give him myself, you know, the right
- 21:37Speaker 1: amount of time. I don't want another rush anything. So
- 21:39Speaker 1: I felt good last week, running straight and you know,
- 21:42Speaker 1: making cuts. Yes, last week, you know, I even tried
- 21:44Speaker 1: to make cuts on my leg hard as I could.
- 21:46Speaker 1: You know, I didn't really feel nothing. So it's just
- 21:49Speaker 1: want to be comfortable, you know, you don't want to
- 21:50Speaker 1: send somebody on the field that's not comfortable playing yet.
- 21:52Speaker 1: And you know what I'm saying, a hundred percent player,
- 21:55Speaker 1: you don't want to send them. You know somebody out
- 21:56Speaker 1: there that's not ready to play, that's all. You're not
- 21:59Speaker 1: worried about tickets, not worried about that. I'm just worried
- 22:01Speaker 1: about being ready to play in ready to provide for
- 22:05Speaker 1: what they need me to do. Chase was listed as
- 22:07Speaker 1: a limited participant in practice on Wednesday and Thursday, as
- 22:11Speaker 1: was Joe Mixon, who was likely to return after missing
- 22:14Speaker 1: one game due to a concussion. The Bengals Booth podcast

- 22:31Speaker 1: last Sunday's game at Tennessee, a video shot by Mark
- 22:34Speaker 1: Slaughter from wl WT in Cincinnati went viral. It showed
- 22:39Speaker 1: Ted Carriss viewing fbombs as he walked off the field
- 22:42Speaker 1: after the victory. Ted was upset about the Titans behavior
- 22:47Speaker 1: on the final few snaps of the game when the
- 22:49Speaker 1: Bengals were in the victory formation. He even took a
- 22:52Speaker 1: punch to the face on the final play of the
- 22:55Speaker 1: game from Jeffrey Simmons. I spoke to Carris about it
- 22:58Speaker 1: this week. Things got a little testy at the end
- 23:02Speaker 1: of the game last week when the Bengals were in
- 23:04Speaker 1: the victory formation and the Titans kind of tried to
- 23:06Speaker 1: jump the snap and blow it up. Is that against
- 23:10Speaker 1: the unwritten rules of football to do that? I mean,
- 23:13Speaker 1: there's a certain protocol, but they didn't want to concede.
- 23:16Speaker 1: That's their right. So, you know, just glad we got
- 23:19Speaker 1: out there of the victory. You were captured on camera
- 23:22Speaker 1: fired up walking off the field. They can't repeat exactly
- 23:25Speaker 1: what she said, but Zach Taylor was asked about it
- 23:28Speaker 1: this week and he said, Ted, carrist is going to
- 23:30Speaker 1: be a Cincinnati legend. How did you become aware of
- 23:33Speaker 1: the fact that that went viral? My dad? I was
- 23:35Speaker 1: talking to my dad for the game and said, ask
- 23:38Speaker 1: me if I was all right and if I knew
- 23:39Speaker 1: I was trending on Twitter. So that's kind of It's
- 23:42Speaker 1: a weird, vulnerable feeling and everyone's talking about you online.
- 23:44Speaker 1: But glad it was overall positive thanks to Cincinnati fans
- 23:48Speaker 1: great reaction, but you know, you don't want to always
- 23:50Speaker 1: live like that. But you know it was fired up,
- 23:52Speaker 1: big physical victory, so glad to get out of there
- 23:54Speaker 1: with a win. Now it's all Chiefs. You were miked
- 23:57Speaker 1: up way back in Week four for the Miami game.
- 24:00Speaker 1: My favorite part was when you were walking off the
- 24:02Speaker 1: field after the clinching touchdown. You've got your arms raised
- 24:05Speaker 1: in triumph and you accidentally clock one of the officials.
- 24:09Speaker 1: Was the contact pretty good? Well? The only thing I
- 24:12Speaker 1: was worried about was it is illegal to touching officials,
- 24:14Speaker 1: so it could be potentially been a fifteen year AP penalty.
- 24:16Speaker 1: Obviously in that context it wouldn't have been. But uh no,
- 24:19Speaker 1: that wasn't. I mean, obviously he dropped the ball, so
- 24:21Speaker 1: it was enough to to to cause a fumble by
- 24:25Speaker 1: the ref. So I just want to make sure that
- 24:27Speaker 1: you know we didn't do anything dicey at the end there.
- 24:29Speaker 1: I want to make sure you knew it was inadverted
- 24:31Speaker 1: because you know, I've seen stuff like that. Inadverted shots
- 24:34Speaker 1: end up in fifteen year A penalties, and you don't
- 24:36Speaker 1: want to live like that. We're chatting with Ted Carris.
- 24:38Speaker 1: You're eleven games getting ready for twelve in your first
- 24:41Speaker 1: season with the Bengals at this point, you know your teammates. Well,
- 24:44Speaker 1: tell me something about Joe Burrow that's really stood out
- 24:47Speaker 1: to you so far. I think his uh, you know,
- 24:50Speaker 1: attention to detail is obsession with victory is awesome. He's
- 24:54Speaker 1: a great chess player. I think that's pretty admirable, and
- 24:58Speaker 1: you know, just a pleasure to be around. Very you know,
- 25:00Speaker 1: one of the most successible superstars I've ever been around.
- 25:02Speaker 1: Have you competed in chess? No, I'm not going to
- 25:05Speaker 1: him and Kappa compete, So they're they're very good. I'm
- 25:08Speaker 1: more of a more of a Katan player if you're
- 25:10Speaker 1: playing Setlers of Katan. Yeah, we've got that at home.
- 25:14Speaker 1: So Lap's nickname for Alex Kappa's Phi Beta Kappa. It
- 25:18Speaker 1: sounds like if he's a good chess player, that might
- 25:20Speaker 1: be accurate. Yeah, I think that's well, that's more of
- 25:23Speaker 1: a nod to uh animal house, I think. But yeah, No,
- 25:28Speaker 1: Caps extraordinary been a huge part of our line success.
- 25:30Speaker 1: We would not be in the same position without Ox Kappa. So,
- 25:33Speaker 1: speaking of the line success, I interviewed Charles Davis from
- 25:36Speaker 1: CBS last week. He had the game He also called
- 25:39Speaker 1: the season opener against the Steelers. So I asked him
- 25:42Speaker 1: about the lines improvement and what he's seen. He said,
- 25:45Speaker 1: the Bengals are now a top third offensive line in
- 25:48Speaker 1: the NFL. So thirty two teams, that's roughly top ten.
- 25:51Speaker 1: What do you think, you know, it's a great compliment.
- 25:53Speaker 1: I think that you know, the team is playing, you know,
- 25:56Speaker 1: the unit's playing well, obviously well enough to win in November,
- 25:58Speaker 1: but we got to keep it going. Uh, there's no
- 26:01Speaker 1: you know, magic pill that's just going to transfer over
- 26:03Speaker 1: good performance. Besides, you know, good practice, attention to detail,
- 26:07Speaker 1: and everyone being prepared, ready to go. So it's Kansas
- 26:09Speaker 1: City this week. A former roommate is on the other roster. Correct, Yeah,
- 26:13Speaker 1: Joe Tuoney stood up in my wedding, one of my
- 26:15Speaker 1: best friends. Uh Dayton Archbishop alter Alum. So excited to
- 26:21Speaker 1: see him. We'll see his family after the game. I'm excited.
- 26:24Speaker 1: They're great family friends, amazing people. You know, it'll be
- 26:28Speaker 1: nice to shake his hand with a victory. Hygi two
- 26:30Speaker 1: hit it off so well, and we came in together.
- 26:32Speaker 1: We were drafted together. He was basically the first guy
- 26:34Speaker 1: I met. We're very similar, you know, Midwest o lineman
- 26:39Speaker 1: have a lot of similar interests, but you know I
- 26:41Speaker 1: had a good, you know, back and forth, good dichotomy
- 26:44Speaker 1: of interest. So it was amazing live with them for
- 26:47Speaker 1: four years and you know, always rooting for the best.
- 26:51Speaker 1: Glad he got to, you know, cash in with that
- 26:53Speaker 1: big deal and he's still playing, you know, as good
- 26:55Speaker 1: as anyone in the league. Are you a jersey swap
- 26:58Speaker 1: kind of guy? Well, that happened this week. I have
- 27:00Speaker 1: about sixty jerseys Dan in my collection. Mostly I just
- 27:04Speaker 1: buy him and have my teammates signed him, so they'll
- 27:07Speaker 1: all go open my bar. At some point I'm gonna
- 27:08Speaker 1: open a bar up. So that's what I can't. Can't
- 27:11Speaker 1: put it that many of my house. I would look
- 27:12Speaker 1: like an idiot. Yeah, it'll be wall to wall in
- 27:14Speaker 1: the bar. It'll look great. A couple more questions for
- 27:16Speaker 1: Ted Carris. According to Pro Football Focus, the top ranked
- 27:19Speaker 1: interior defensive lineman in the NFL isn't Aaron Donald. It
- 27:23Speaker 1: isn't Jeffrey Simmons, who you faced last week. It isn't
- 27:25Speaker 1: Cam Hayward. It is the guy you're going to face
- 27:28Speaker 1: this week. Chris Jones is a brute strength? Is it quickness.
- 27:32Speaker 1: What is it about this guy that makes him so
- 27:34Speaker 1: tough premiere player? I think you know, one thing people
- 27:36Speaker 1: estimate is how big he is. He has six six
- 27:38Speaker 1: very long, very very long and strong. So we're gonna
- 27:42Speaker 1: have to bring our best. You know, he has a
- 27:43Speaker 1: good array of moves, he has a good toolbox, very
- 27:45Speaker 1: savvy player, played a long time at a high level,
- 27:47Speaker 1: so it's gonna be another test for us to you know,
- 27:50Speaker 1: perform absolutely very best. You've been making the media rounds
- 27:54Speaker 1: recently to promote a worthy cause, the sins He hat
- 27:58Speaker 1: and what it raises money for, or give us the
- 28:00Speaker 1: backstory of the sinc He hat. Since he hat is
- 28:03Speaker 1: you've probably seen it on a couple of guys. It's
- 28:05Speaker 1: the you know, black wider orange hats that'd say since
- 28:07Speaker 1: and it benefits the village of Mariachi, Indianapolis, which provides
- 28:11Speaker 1: independent living and social connections and employment opportunities for adults
- 28:16Speaker 1: with developmental disabilities. So autism downstoner mean the most common.
- 28:20Speaker 1: And that will be on your shoes this week for
- 28:22Speaker 1: my cause, my cleats is that correct? That will be
- 28:25Speaker 1: that will be on my shoes. They'll be up for
- 28:26Speaker 1: auction two this spring. Off the casino night in Indianapolis,
- 28:30Speaker 1: so hopefully a couple of since A residents make their
- 28:32Speaker 1: way out there because last year's also will be up
- 28:34Speaker 1: for auction. We didn't have one last year obviously, had
- 28:37Speaker 1: to cancel that a few times due to COVID protocol.
- 28:40Speaker 1: I appreciate your time, best of luck this week, and
- 28:42Speaker 1: you were great as a TV weather man. Thank you
- 28:44Speaker 1: so much. Dan. Let's go who Day. Yes. While making
- 28:48Speaker 1: an appearance to discuss the sinci hat on Local twelve
- 28:51Speaker 1: news and Cincinnati, Ted helped give the weather forecast. If
- 28:55Speaker 1: you would like to check it out, just do a

- 29:19Speaker 1: week's Know the Faux segment. Joe Valerio spent four years
- 29:23Speaker 1: as an offensive lineman in Kansas City and currently covers
- 29:27Speaker 1: the Chiefs as one of the hosts of the Believe
- 29:29Speaker 1: in Chiefs podcast Joe and the Chiefs traded Tyree Hill.
- 29:34Speaker 1: I think a lot of people wondered that the Kansas
- 29:36Speaker 1: City offense was going to dip a little bit. Well,
- 29:39Speaker 1: let's see their number one in yards, they're number one
- 29:41Speaker 1: in points, just under thirty a game. How are they
- 29:44Speaker 1: doing it? Well? I gotta give them a lot of credit.
- 29:48Speaker 1: I give Brett Veach and Andy Reid and on the
- 29:51Speaker 1: offense and defensive coordinators, and also you got to throw
- 29:53Speaker 1: special teams in there as well. You know, they're really
- 29:56Speaker 1: good at diversifying when folks leave, and if you take
- 30:00Speaker 1: the Tyreek example that you you know that you brought
- 30:02Speaker 1: up Dan, they diversified their wide receiving core and I
- 30:06Speaker 1: thought that was a real positive for them. I felt like,
- 30:09Speaker 1: we'll call it a two trick pony because you always
- 30:11Speaker 1: got to throw Travis Kelsey in the mix, right. They
- 30:14Speaker 1: were getting to the point where I think defensive coordinators
- 30:17Speaker 1: were starting to get on track with what they were
- 30:19Speaker 1: doing and what the playbook looked like. And I think
- 30:22Speaker 1: this was you know the magic of Andy Reid and
- 30:24Speaker 1: what Brett Feach has been able to do. And I
- 30:26Speaker 1: guess the best term not to overuse the term was.
- 30:29Speaker 1: I think they diversified in a way that caused a
- 30:32Speaker 1: lot of defensive coordinators to take a step back and
- 30:35Speaker 1: rewrite what they were going to do. Because I look
- 30:37Speaker 1: at that receiving core that's been able to withstand injury.
- 30:41Speaker 1: Right when somebody gets hurt, another guy steps up. You
- 30:44Speaker 1: know they've got finally, you know, in like an MVS,
- 30:47Speaker 1: they've got the back shoulder throw that Patrick can make.
- 30:50Speaker 1: You know, I call those the Randy Moss types, you know,
- 30:53Speaker 1: the Terrell Owens types. You know they've got you know,
- 30:57Speaker 1: they've got the sort of the possession received in like
- 31:01Speaker 1: a Justin Watson, who's you know, kind of he's gonna
- 31:04Speaker 1: get open, He's gonna find an open spot, he's gonna
- 31:07Speaker 1: you know, he's gonna be able to get in an
- 31:10Speaker 1: area where you know he needs to be. Juju is
- 31:13Speaker 1: in that same camp where Juju is more of a
- 31:16Speaker 1: smaller possession type receiver, very short handed, and you know,
- 31:20Speaker 1: and I think that's what they were able to do.
- 31:21Speaker 1: And of course you always will have Rcole Hardman as
- 31:24Speaker 1: as sort of the speed guy. And I think it's
- 31:27Speaker 1: given them enough, it's given them more pages in the playbook.
- 31:29Speaker 1: So anyway, long answer to a short question, Dan, that's
- 31:32Speaker 1: what I think about Tyreek Hill leaving. It's what they've
- 31:36Speaker 1: been able to do offensively. Has settled a lot of
- 31:38Speaker 1: those questions and demonstrated that they could do it without him, although, hey,
- 31:42Speaker 1: he was a big piece of the puzzle to miss
- 31:44Speaker 1: and I'm sure there are times when Andy Reid Eric
- 31:46Speaker 1: the enemy aren't missing him a ton. Joe, you played
- 31:49Speaker 1: offensive line in the NFL. My broadcast partner Dave Lappam
- 31:52Speaker 1: played offensive line in the NFL. He says, in a
- 31:55Speaker 1: normal game, you try to stop the run and then
- 31:58Speaker 1: you defend the pass. He's says against the Chiefs, it's
- 32:01Speaker 1: the reverse. You have to stop the pass, so you
- 32:04Speaker 1: almost dare them to run. Do you agree? I totally agree,
- 32:09Speaker 1: And it's something I've been talking with, you know, my
- 32:10Speaker 1: podcast partner Jeff Fidoton about for years. I have felt
- 32:15Speaker 1: over the last several years, we'll just call it several,
- 32:17Speaker 1: we'll bucket it in a big term, I felt like
- 32:20Speaker 1: they have been somebody who hasn't really been committed and
- 32:23Speaker 1: I'm going to use that in air quotes right, committed
- 32:25Speaker 1: to the run game. And I think with Isaiah Pacheco
- 32:29Speaker 1: now coming on. I think they may have found somebody.
- 32:32Speaker 1: You know, there's those terms out there. When he runs,
- 32:35Speaker 1: he's trying to hurt the ground. You know, he gets
- 32:38Speaker 1: up and runs faster after the play is over. He's
- 32:41Speaker 1: just got that level of energy. I think they may
- 32:45Speaker 1: have found somebody that you can pull back and say,
- 32:47Speaker 1: I mean, could he be the next Priest Holmes Kareem Hunt.
- 32:51Speaker 1: I don't know, but that's a big stretch for a rookie.
- 32:54Speaker 1: But I think that's the piece that this offense has
- 32:57Speaker 1: been missing. And I feel like whenever the Chiefs have
- 33:01Speaker 1: committed to the run again, I'm going to overuse this term.
- 33:04Speaker 1: It allows them to open up the playbook and it
- 33:08Speaker 1: gives Patrick Moore options more things to do when you've
- 33:11Speaker 1: got eight guys kind of crowding the box a little bit,
- 33:14Speaker 1: wondering if they're gonna run, are they going to play action?
- 33:17Speaker 1: You know, what are they gonna do? And I just
- 33:19Speaker 1: feel like I'm super excited about what they're doing with
- 33:22Speaker 1: Isaiah now and I think it's going to help them
- 33:23Speaker 1: down the stretch. But it's always been I feel the
- 33:26Speaker 1: Achilles heel of the offense at least Patrick Mahomes's offense,
- 33:30Speaker 1: maybe not a Trent Green or Alex Smith in the
- 33:32Speaker 1: past when they've had those kind of big Derrek Henry
- 33:35Speaker 1: type running backs or a Sequon Barkley somebody like that,
- 33:38Speaker 1: that's going to get you five and a half yards
- 33:40Speaker 1: of carry. I feel like it's always been their achilles heel.
- 33:44Speaker 1: Former Chiefs offensive lineman Joe Valerio is our guest. He
- 33:47Speaker 1: is the host of the Belief in Chiefs podcast on
- 33:49Speaker 1: the Belief Podcast Network. In the second half of the
- 33:52Speaker 1: AFC Championship Game last year, Joe, the Bengals rushed three
- 33:55Speaker 1: and covered with eight on about half of Patrick mahomes
- 33:59Speaker 1: drop back and it worked. Have teams been trying that
- 34:03Speaker 1: much this year? And if so, is it's still working.
- 34:07Speaker 1: I mean, it obviously worked for the Bengals, and I
- 34:10Speaker 1: think they figured it out right, might as well take
- 34:12Speaker 1: a shot. If, like you said, you're gonna stop, you're
- 34:15Speaker 1: gonna stop the pass first. And that's what they did
- 34:17Speaker 1: in that second half, and I think it was marvelous
- 34:20Speaker 1: call by the Bengals coaching staff to do that. Um.
- 34:24Speaker 1: I think with some of the things they have been
- 34:26Speaker 1: able to do in the run game, while it has
- 34:29Speaker 1: been limited. It definitely is better than it was last year.
- 34:33Speaker 1: So I don't see as many teams falling back that many.
- 34:38Speaker 1: You know, they're generally rushing for you know, you have
- 34:42Speaker 1: to have a very discipline pass rush against Patrick Mahomes.
- 34:45Speaker 1: You know, you can't if you give him what I
- 34:48Speaker 1: call a pocket within the pocket, he's gonna he's gonna
- 34:50Speaker 1: beat you. Um not with his legs all the time.
- 34:53Speaker 1: He's not like Josh Allen will what he does run.
- 34:54Speaker 1: I'm not saying he can't run, but he's gonna find
- 34:57Speaker 1: that extra second or two to find a receiver who
- 35:00Speaker 1: you can get into, you know, either in man you know,
- 35:02Speaker 1: get get away from somebody or sit down in his
- 35:05Speaker 1: zone and find that open spot. Um So, more teams,
- 35:08Speaker 1: I think this year because of this better stable of
- 35:12Speaker 1: running backs i'll call it, and the way they've been performing,
- 35:16Speaker 1: I think more teams have been bringing you know, seven
- 35:19Speaker 1: up into the box on first down, and you know,
- 35:21Speaker 1: and Patrick's been able to make some plays you know,
- 35:24Speaker 1: on first down with the past when he sees more
- 35:26Speaker 1: players coming up into that you know, tackle box. So
- 35:29Speaker 1: I think I think this year it's been a learning lesson.
- 35:33Speaker 1: That game was a learning lesson for Andy Reid and
- 35:36Speaker 1: Eric the enemy is that you know, we're going to
- 35:37Speaker 1: have to do something and not just allow you know,
- 35:41Speaker 1: three guys to rush and eight guys dropped back. I mean,
- 35:43Speaker 1: that's that was a fantastic formula for the Bengals and
- 35:46Speaker 1: hats off to them for for thinking of that. Yo,
- 35:49Speaker 1: if my math is correct, the Chiefs are twenty and
- 35:52Speaker 1: four in their last twenty four games, and half of
- 35:55Speaker 1: the four losses where to Cincinnati in a four week
- 35:58Speaker 1: span last January. What impact do those losses have on
- 36:02Speaker 1: this week's game? Well, you know, players always have thoughts
- 36:07Speaker 1: and count they have they have games circled on the
- 36:09Speaker 1: calendar as much as as much as you know, I
- 36:11Speaker 1: lived under the Marty Schottenheimer era, right, and you being
- 36:13Speaker 1: in Ohio obviously have you know probably at least some
- 36:17Speaker 1: of those memories of those Cleveland Browns Marty teams. And
- 36:20Speaker 1: you know, Marty was the kind of coach that always
- 36:22Speaker 1: said the most important game is your next game. And
- 36:24Speaker 1: I get that, and I totally live by a philosophy
- 36:26Speaker 1: not just with football, but also you know things in life.
- 36:29Speaker 1: You know, the next thing you're doing is the most
- 36:30Speaker 1: important thing. But but the big butt. You know that
- 36:35Speaker 1: players circle games on their calendars that you can't help it, right,
- 36:37Speaker 1: just they're just humans and they're thinking about the things
- 36:40Speaker 1: that are sitting in their crawl or the things that
- 36:43Speaker 1: stung them. And I know this game has stung a
- 36:46Speaker 1: lot of Chiefs. And whether the Bengals were coming in
- 36:49Speaker 1: here on the role that they're coming in on, which
- 36:51Speaker 1: is very exciting, right, the seven and four role that
- 36:54Speaker 1: they're on, because I'm not sure early mid season, you know,
- 36:58Speaker 1: until they had these three three wins in a row,
- 37:00Speaker 1: if I'm not mistaken right, that maybe people were doubting
- 37:03Speaker 1: this team a little bit. And I think Joe Burrow
- 37:06Speaker 1: and the rest of the team are putting that behind
- 37:09Speaker 1: them a little bit and they're seeing the team that
- 37:11Speaker 1: they are and that they were and that they can be.
- 37:13Speaker 1: And I think, you know, every team goes through those
- 37:15Speaker 1: rough patches, So this is going to be an amazing
- 37:17Speaker 1: game for a lot of reasons. I think there's going
- 37:20Speaker 1: to be a lot of players on the Kansas City
- 37:22Speaker 1: side that are going to have a little bit of
- 37:24Speaker 1: a chip on their shoulder about this game, and they
- 37:26Speaker 1: probably had it circled regardless of whether you know, you
- 37:29Speaker 1: don't want to look past the Raiders and the Broncos
- 37:31Speaker 1: in the AFC West. This that game stung a lot
- 37:34Speaker 1: of a lot of players, a lot of fans. So
- 37:36Speaker 1: I think, I think the Chiefs are going to pull out,
- 37:39Speaker 1: you know, all the stops that they can, and I
- 37:41Speaker 1: think the players are going to be, you know, pretty
- 37:43Speaker 1: mentally prepared for this game. Valerio played for the Chiefs
- 37:47Speaker 1: in the nineteen nineties. He as the host of the
- 37:49Speaker 1: Believe in Chiefs podcast. Let's turn to the Kansas City defense.
- 37:53Speaker 1: What's the strength, what's the biggest weakness? Well, I couldn't.
- 37:57Speaker 1: You can't. You can't say anything without bringing up Chris Jones, right,
- 38:01Speaker 1: you can't. You can't have a defensive conversation without him. Um.
- 38:05Speaker 1: I thought at the beginning of this season, and the
- 38:08Speaker 1: reason why you know they went after karloftas early in
- 38:12Speaker 1: the first round was the pass rush. You know, what,
- 38:15Speaker 1: what is Frank Clark going to be able to bring
- 38:17Speaker 1: to the table in his you know, advanced age. Um,
- 38:21Speaker 1: you know, are we going to be able to get
- 38:23Speaker 1: after the quarterback? And you know I would have said
- 38:27Speaker 1: six weeks ago, eight weeks ago, early on that that
- 38:30Speaker 1: pass rush was going to be their weak link, and
- 38:32Speaker 1: it's turning out to be one of their better facets
- 38:35Speaker 1: of their team. I think a lot of it has
- 38:37Speaker 1: to do with game planning and positioning that Steve Spagnolan's
- 38:40Speaker 1: the defense coordinator, is doing. He's taking not a really
- 38:44Speaker 1: well known group of guys. I mean, you know, George
- 38:47Speaker 1: Carloftas got his first sack um, you know, full sack
- 38:50Speaker 1: against the Rams, so he has been a lot of pressures,
- 38:54Speaker 1: but definitely not getting after the quarterback um. I think
- 38:57Speaker 1: they were worried about, you know, whether or not, you know,
- 39:01Speaker 1: obviously we're playing without Frank Clark right now because of
- 39:03Speaker 1: the of the of the suspension, whether he was going
- 39:06Speaker 1: to be able to hold up. He came back in
- 39:08Speaker 1: fantastic shape and has been making an impact. And even
- 39:11Speaker 1: guys like you know, Mike Dana, Carlos Dunlap there, they're
- 39:15Speaker 1: they're Steve spagnol is finding a way to make make
- 39:18Speaker 1: it work for them. And that's what this defensive staff
- 39:20Speaker 1: always does, and an offense they do it. I think
- 39:23Speaker 1: even more. Steve Spagnola never takes a square peg and
- 39:26Speaker 1: tries to jam it into a round hole. He doesn't
- 39:28Speaker 1: say this is my defensive philosophy, you're going to fit.
- 39:31Speaker 1: It's my way or the highway. He constantly is evolving
- 39:36Speaker 1: the player's skills and their attributes to meet the needs
- 39:40Speaker 1: of the defense. I really respect that about him. I
- 39:43Speaker 1: love that about coaches. His playbook is very let's call
- 39:46Speaker 1: it flexible, variable and one that is in you know,
- 39:51Speaker 1: there's lots of iterations of it. So that would have
- 39:54Speaker 1: been the weak link. I think right now, you know
- 39:57Speaker 1: Nick Bolton's playing well, I would have said it was
- 39:58Speaker 1: the linebacking corp. But with Willie gayback and Nick Bolton's
- 40:01Speaker 1: having a Pro Bowl type season, Leo Channel as a
- 40:05Speaker 1: rookie came on. I mean I would have said that
- 40:08Speaker 1: maybe the whole defense was a week you know, six
- 40:11Speaker 1: months ago as we were heading into the off season.
- 40:13Speaker 1: But the drafting of Trent McDuffie, Justin Reid, Legarius Snead
- 40:18Speaker 1: coming into their own, I have to say I can't
- 40:22Speaker 1: really find as strong of a week link on defense
- 40:26Speaker 1: as I do on the Chiefs offense, which I think
- 40:29Speaker 1: is still the running game, the overall running game. On defense,
- 40:32Speaker 1: I think they've shored up all those things where they
- 40:35Speaker 1: might not be a plus in any one of those
- 40:39Speaker 1: attributes D backs, middle of the field, linebacking and then
- 40:43Speaker 1: up front on the D line. But you know, they're
- 40:45Speaker 1: solid B B plus across the board, and I think
- 40:48Speaker 1: it's it's giving them some success right now, Joe, you
- 40:51Speaker 1: mentioned the name Carlos Dunlap. I'm guessing there are Bengals
- 40:54Speaker 1: fans listening to this that didn't even realize he's wound
- 40:57Speaker 1: up with the Kansas City Chiefs this year and is
- 40:59Speaker 1: wearing the number eight. He had some great years in
- 41:01Speaker 1: Cincinnati before an ugly exit. What's his role with the
- 41:05Speaker 1: Chiefs right now? And how is he doing? I mean,
- 41:07Speaker 1: he's got he's got four sacks, so he's he's making
- 41:10Speaker 1: an impact. He's, you know, definitely a great rotation player
- 41:15Speaker 1: who gets you know, he gets a lot of starts
- 41:17Speaker 1: um uh and and and he's you know, he's really
- 41:20Speaker 1: jumped in there. And it's very uh, it's very easy
- 41:24Speaker 1: to find him on the field because you see a
- 41:25Speaker 1: number eight lining up at defensive end and you're like,
- 41:27Speaker 1: wait a minute, that that a wide receiver, but fall
- 41:30Speaker 1: out onto the defense. But he's very very recognizable out there,
- 41:34Speaker 1: and you know he's been he's been they've been rotating
- 41:37Speaker 1: him in when he you know, when he starts. But
- 41:40Speaker 1: that's what this defense has been doing. They've been trying
- 41:42Speaker 1: to build depth where where they can get, you know,
- 41:45Speaker 1: folks to rotate through. So they're not playing you know,
- 41:48Speaker 1: sixty seventy plays on defense. Maybe they're playing you know,
- 41:50Speaker 1: the starters are playing the forty five or fifty critical
- 41:53Speaker 1: defensive plays because defense is a rotation position, and that's
- 41:56Speaker 1: what he's been doing. And he's you know, he's made
- 41:58Speaker 1: a really nice role play impact, especially with Frank clark
- 42:03Speaker 1: suspension and uh, you know, with bringing helping to bring
- 42:06Speaker 1: guys like George Carl Aftis, you know, an untested rookie along.
- 42:10Speaker 1: So I think he's been been a great addition. He
- 42:12Speaker 1: seems to have found his niche with the Chiefs and
- 42:16Speaker 1: he's found his role. So I think the fans are
- 42:18Speaker 1: really happy to have him. Are there any injury questions
- 42:21Speaker 1: that we should be keeping our eye on this week
- 42:24Speaker 1: from Cincinnati? They have to keep an eye on whether,
- 42:27Speaker 1: you know, what Andy's gonna do besides just the injuries,
- 42:29Speaker 1: you know, what are they gonna do? Uh, you know
- 42:31Speaker 1: with Clyde Edwards, Hilaire right, is he going to play
- 42:33Speaker 1: again and is Isaiah Pacheco and Ronald Jones going to
- 42:36Speaker 1: be Are they going to be the guys rotating in
- 42:38Speaker 1: with Jack McKinnon. The other one is Joe Tuoney. Joe
- 42:41Speaker 1: has been banged up a lot, you know. Nick Alagretti
- 42:44Speaker 1: is the he's my number, sake, number seventy three. Plus
- 42:47Speaker 1: he got a lot of vows in his name, so
- 42:48Speaker 1: you know, we kind of any caught a touchdown last year,
- 42:51Speaker 1: so he's a tackle eligible too. Like we've we've we've
- 42:53Speaker 1: bonded uh dramatically. Um. But yeah, they'll have to keep
- 42:57Speaker 1: keep an eye on the line and to see, uh,
- 42:59Speaker 1: you know, if they can try to puncture that weakness
- 43:02Speaker 1: of of you know, if Joe Thuney's not going to
- 43:04Speaker 1: be able to go and Nick Alagretti steps and he's
- 43:07Speaker 1: done an admirable job filling in. Um. You know, he's
- 43:10Speaker 1: not the type of backup that's you know, you're going
- 43:12Speaker 1: to miss a beat when he gets in there. So
- 43:14Speaker 1: they've done a really good job inside of of of
- 43:17Speaker 1: you know, managing depth. I'm a little I get a
- 43:20Speaker 1: little concerned on the outside. We've got some untested tackles
- 43:24Speaker 1: backing up Orlando Brown and Andrew Wiley in, Darien Kinnard
- 43:28Speaker 1: and Jared Christian. They haven't really played a whole lot
- 43:31Speaker 1: this season, and uh, you know they're they're kind of
- 43:34Speaker 1: you know, as the season goes on and you haven't
- 43:35Speaker 1: been playing, it can get at it gets a little
- 43:37Speaker 1: worse each day. So you know, just got to make
- 43:40Speaker 1: sure that old line stays healthy because that was you know,
- 43:43Speaker 1: that was their downfall several years ago. In the Super Bowl.
- 43:47Speaker 1: You had a big man touchdown back in the day. Yeah,
- 43:50Speaker 1: I had four actually, so well, well, I just you know, listen,
- 43:54Speaker 1: here's one of my greatest uh you know, uh, the
- 43:56Speaker 1: greatest honors is that I share that record with Anthony
- 43:59Speaker 1: Munio's who also had four tackle eligible touchdowns. So we
- 44:03Speaker 1: share the record along with another player. There's four four
- 44:06Speaker 1: offensive linemen who have scored four touchdowns, so you know,
- 44:10Speaker 1: I will always of course, of course, Anthony Munos was
- 44:13Speaker 1: one of my idols growing up. I loved watching him play.
- 44:18Speaker 1: My college strength coach was very good friends with the
- 44:21Speaker 1: Bengal strength coach back then, who you know, used to
- 44:23Speaker 1: train guys like Anthony and Tim crumb Ry and so
- 44:26Speaker 1: I got to know Reggie Williams and so I knew
- 44:30Speaker 1: a lot about the Bengals even though I was a
- 44:32Speaker 1: Philly NFC kid growing up in Philadelphia with my Eagles.
- 44:35Speaker 1: I knew a lot about the Bengals through my college
- 44:38Speaker 1: strength coach who was friendly with the Bengal strength coach,
- 44:41Speaker 1: so we used to follow their seam strength regimen. So
- 44:44Speaker 1: really cool connection there with Anthony Joe Valerio, host of
- 44:49Speaker 1: the Believe in Chiefs podcast, and a guy that chairs
- 44:52Speaker 1: an NFL record with Anthony Munios. So I doesn't get
- 44:55Speaker 1: any better than I Just wish I could have played
- 44:56Speaker 1: as long as he did or had as many Pro Bowls.
- 44:59Speaker 1: I just you don't have any fingers that face sideways
- 45:02Speaker 1: like Anthony does. Just one, Joe, this has been terrific.
- 45:08Speaker 1: I really appreciate your time. Thank you so much. Awesome Dan,
