- 0:00As I was meditating on the resurrection this week, I found
- 0:02myself exploring all the insights in the Scriptures,
- 0:07namely in the Gospels, to just refresh my memory and to revisit
- 0:12some things that we often know. And then skimming through what
- 0:18the Word of God reveals, specifically about the events
- 0:20that followed Christ's conquest of death, I encountered the very
- 0:27first words that Jesus spoke after leaving the tomb empty.
- 0:33Have you ever wondered what Christ's very first words were
- 0:40when he rose from the grave? Well, when you consider the
- 0:44sequence of Christ's post resurrection appearances, you'll
- 0:50learn that Jesus first appeared to Mary Magdalene.
- 0:54That's actually plainly stated at the end of the Gospel of
- 0:56Mark. And that encounter is disclosed
- 1:01to us in greater detail in John's writings, where he takes
- 1:05us to that early Sunday morning and vividly describes it,
- 1:08focusing on Mary's experience as she arrived at the burial site
- 1:13of her Master. And it's in that testimony where
- 1:17we locate the first documented words that Jesus said after
- 1:24defeating death. And I'm sure that after reading
- 1:27it, you will never forget it. Turn with me to John chapter 20
- 1:32and let's look together at one verse here, verse 15, John 20,
- 1:36verse 15. Jesus said to her, woman, why
- 1:49are you weeping? Whom are you seeking, Supposing
- 1:54him to be the gardener? She said to him, Sir, if you
- 1:57have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I
- 2:01will take him away. The first recorded words of
- 2:06Jesus is in the form of a question.
- 2:08Woman, why are you weeping? That fascinates me.
- 2:15And it should compel us to pause, to zoom out, and to see
- 2:19what took place before this and what follows it, to have Christ
- 2:26approach Mary in this way. And that's what I want us to
- 2:29consider in our short time together.
- 2:32So let's read this in its entirety, beginning in verse 11
- 2:35down through verse 18. But Mary stood weeping outside
- 2:40the tomb. And as she wept, she stooped to
- 2:44look into the tomb, and she saw 2 angels in white sitting where
- 2:48the body of Jesus had lain, one at the head and one at the feet.
- 2:53They said to her, Woman, why are you weeping?
- 2:56She said to them, they have taken away my Lord, and I do not
- 2:59know where they have laid him. Having said this, she turned
- 3:03around and saw Jesus standing, but she did not know that it was
- 3:07Jesus. Jesus said to her, Woman, why
- 3:10are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?
- 3:13Supposing him to be the gardener?
- 3:14She said to him, Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me
- 3:16where you have laid him and I will take him away.
- 3:20Jesus said to her, Mary, she turned and said to him in
- 3:24Aramaic Rabboni, which means teacher.
- 3:27Jesus said to her, Do not cling to me, for I have not yet
- 3:30ascended to the Father, but go to my brothers and say to them,
- 3:34I am ascending to my Father, and your father to my God and your
- 3:39God. Mary Magdalene went and
- 3:42announced to the disciples, I have seen the Lord, and that He
- 3:46had said these things to her. Verse 11 May be a little bit of
- 3:50an awkward place to begin reading this account, so I think
- 3:53it'll be helpful to just remember a little bit of the
- 3:56back story here. If you look back at the
- 3:59beginning of the chapter, we discover that Mary makes her way
- 4:02to the tomb early in the morning, even before the sun
- 4:04pierced the horizon. She's there to pay her honors,
- 4:09but upon coming to that place, she saw that the that the stone
- 4:13was rolled away, and this alarmed her.
- 4:15So immediately she makes her way back to Peter and John and she
- 4:19tells them, assuming the worst, they've taken his body.
- 4:23Somebody kidnapped the body of the Lord.
- 4:27Peter and John immediately make their way to this place, and
- 4:30upon arrival, the Scriptures tell us that they silently, yet
- 4:34carefully investigate the scene. There are the clothes, but
- 4:41there's no body. And quite unexpectedly, the
- 4:46disciples, in a state of confusion, walk away and they go
- 4:51back home. That is how this section
- 4:54concludes before we read what we find in verse 11.
- 4:57But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb.
- 5:04There's something deeply commendable about Mary choosing
- 5:09to stay where Jesus was laid while the disciples walked away.
- 5:14This in no way is an attack on Peter and John, but you cannot
- 5:17deny that Mary's refusal to leave so quickly speaks volumes
- 5:21about her yearning for Christ. It's a beautiful demonstration
- 5:27of how Mary understood her relationship with the Lord.
- 5:30Her connection to Christ was not reduced to obeying some
- 5:32commands, adhering to some moral code, joining a community of
- 5:40religious people, or even signing up for an exciting
- 5:44ministry. What Mary reveals here is that
- 5:49her relationship with Jesus Christ was rooted in a sincere
- 5:53and genuine love for the person. And the rest of the scene
- 6:01confirms a very powerful truth. Christ honors those whose hearts
- 6:06yearn for Him. More than anything else, the
- 6:10fact that Mary was the first person that Jesus chose to
- 6:15reveal Himself to means something.
- 6:20It reveals that He blesses those who desire Him.
- 6:28This precious woman love the Lord.
- 6:31She had rich affection for him. She's broken.
- 6:38In fact, I was struck by her reaction when she eventually
- 6:40looked into the tomb to see what Peter and John saw.
- 6:43And what does she find? She sees 2 angels in white
- 6:46strategically seated at the slab where the body of Jesus was
- 6:50laid, one at the head and one of the feet, invoking the imagery
- 6:54of the cherubim who are infused on the Ark of the Covenant,
- 6:58looking down on the mercy seat. We don't have time to get into
- 7:01that as much as I would like to, because what we want to consider
- 7:05is what these two angels said or asked Mary while her face was
- 7:11being stained with tears. Woman, why are you weeping?
- 7:21And her answer moves me. Look again at verse 13.
- 7:26They sat her a woman. Why are you weeping?
- 7:28She said to them. They have taken away my Lord,
- 7:32and I do not know where they have laid him.
- 7:34Isn't this remarkable saying? What's so remarkable about it?
- 7:38Mary, standing in front of angels, is not distracted for a
- 7:44moment. She's unfazed by their
- 7:48mysterious appearance. No curiosity.
- 7:52Curiosity is sparked. There's no diversion here.
- 7:59Where had they taken him? Why is she not moved by what
- 8:03she's seeing? Because her heart is already
- 8:04consumed with Christ. She's after Christ.
- 8:10She wants to find Christ. Oh, how easily our pursuit of
- 8:15Christ is interfered, is meddled with pivots by things, even good
- 8:25things. And yet this woman shows us as
- 8:31an inspiring model that it is possible to not allow anything
- 8:35or anyone get in the way of what should be our greatest goal.
- 8:39Getting nearer and nearer to Christ.
- 8:44I notice she boldly calls him my Lord.
- 8:47Do you see that in verse 13? They have taken away my Lord,
- 8:50even though in her mind Christ is dead.
- 8:55Imagine this for a moment. In Christ's greatest
- 8:58humiliation, Mary is unashamed to call him my Lord when it was
- 9:04very dangerous to be associated with Public Enemy #1 Mary is
- 9:10unafraid to say He is my Lord even in front of these
- 9:13strangers. And from a human, carnal,
- 9:17unbelieving standpoint, there is no benefit of declaring Jesus
- 9:22Christ is Lord because he's supposedly dead.
- 9:25And yet, Mary is unwavering in her devotion to Christ.
- 9:28Where is my Lord? I must find him.
- 9:37This woman loved the Lord Jesus. She adored Him.
- 9:41And while her standing and her searching is admirable, her
- 9:46weeping is not. The angels asked a very
- 9:51important question when they asked Why are you weeping?
- 9:54Because her answer reveals that her tears ultimately stem from a
- 9:58misunderstanding of the work of Christ and what he had promised.
- 10:05There is no reason to weep. If Jesus was still in the tomb.
- 10:10And that's what you saw, Mary, you have every reason to weep,
- 10:13and so should we. But the tomb is empty.
- 10:17So why are you weeping? Here's what this shows us.
- 10:21Mary's tears, like us, are often because we bring unnecessary
- 10:28sorrow upon ourselves, and that sorrow is stimulated because we
- 10:33fail to grasp who Jesus Christ accurately is and what He said
- 10:39to us. How many times did Mary hear it?
- 10:46Surely she found herself around the disciples.
- 10:49Surely she heard what Christ taught about his own death, his
- 10:52own burial, his own resurrection.
- 10:54And she missed it. Her and the other disciples
- 10:58should be at the tomb, rejoicing.
- 11:00He gave him a play by play. What's going to happen?
- 11:03Instead, she's there, weeping. Where did that come from?
- 11:08Unbelief. Where'd that come from?
- 11:10Missing what Jesus said. And listen, we are much more
- 11:16like Mary in this than we would like to admit.
- 11:21Christ's word is right in front of us.
- 11:24His character is spelled out so obviously, and yet we still weep
- 11:30for things that we shouldn't be weeping about.
- 11:33This is a common trait of the disciples.
- 11:36By the way, do you remember when Jesus sends them off into the
- 11:40sea and a storm comes in and visits those disciples while
- 11:46Jesus stays back on the shore and the winds are battering them
- 11:50and the waves are crashing up against their vehicle?
- 11:56And all of a sudden that sight we find Jesus walking on those
- 12:00very waters in their direction? Do you remember what the
- 12:04disciples said according to Matthew's version of the story?
- 12:07Let me remind you what they said in Matthew 14.
- 12:10Here in verse 26 they said something that I think is quite
- 12:16humbling for us. But when the disciples saw him
- 12:19walking on the sea, they were terrified and said it is a
- 12:24ghost. And they cried out in fear.
- 12:30It is a ghost. And So what we have here is how
- 12:37we can often miss it, that Christ is present, that Christ
- 12:45is faithful, that Christ is near.
- 12:49And we see other things. Mary doesn't see it.
- 12:56And so she's here confused. She's here trying to solve this.
- 13:00She's here trying to make sense of this puzzle.
- 13:05And what's fascinating here is that Christ is going to show his
- 13:09ultimate patience for this woman.
- 13:13So she's here showing her love. She's here showing her devotion,
- 13:16yes, but her weeping is not justified.
- 13:24And the one truth that is profoundly powerful enough to
- 13:26purify perception of everything is this Jesus Christ is alive.
- 13:32That one single reality can stop many tears from flowing if we
- 13:38really believe it. So let me borrow the the
- 13:42question of the angels and ask each of you in this room, are
- 13:46you weeping? And if you are, why?
- 13:50Why are you weeping? And once you've identified the
- 13:57cause of your misery and the the pain that seems to be so fierce
- 14:02and so overwhelming, let me ask you another question.
- 14:04Have you ever tried taking the object of your sadness and
- 14:08placing it in the light of this glorious fact?
- 14:11Jesus Christ is alive? Have you ever consciously done
- 14:18that? Have you ever intentionally
- 14:20moved your sorrow to that place in your heart?
- 14:29Because Mary forgot what Christ said.
- 14:33She's weeping. And when we lose sight of that
- 14:36same truth, we too will find ourselves paralyzed, puzzled
- 14:42unnecessarily. Because if He's alive, that He's
- 14:44sovereign over all things, including death.
- 14:47And if He's alive, then He is, yes, governing the entire
- 14:49universe, but not just the nations, and not just the stars
- 14:52and not just kingdoms. But He promised to shepherd your
- 14:56daily life with His infinite wisdom and unstoppable power.
- 15:03So why are you weeping? I challenge you.
- 15:07Anything that causes that agony, take it to the Lord and stamp on
- 15:13it. Well, Christ is alive, so my
- 15:17body may be sick, Christ is alive.
- 15:22I may fear death, but Christ is alive.
- 15:25I may not know the next step in this life, but Christ is alive.
- 15:33Mary unfortunately didn't see it.
- 15:36And perhaps you're sitting there today and you're thinking, well,
- 15:38listen, you're preaching to the choir, brother.
- 15:40I believe Christ is alive. I showed up here.
- 15:44OK, maybe you do believe that Christ is alive, but perhaps
- 15:47your stumbling block is not necessarily that event, but the
- 15:51character of the one who did race from the grave.
- 15:56And if that's you today, then I want you to consider what this
- 16:00risen Savior does for this miserable follower of His.
- 16:07Look again at verse 14 of John 20.
- 16:13Having said this, when she said, they've taken away my Lord.
- 16:18Having said that, she turned around and saw Jesus standing,
- 16:20but she did not know that it was Jesus.
- 16:24Jesus said to her, Woman, why are you weeping?
- 16:27Whom are you seeking? Supposing him to be the
- 16:30gardener? She said to him, Sir, if you
- 16:31have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I
- 16:33will take him away. Is that something?
- 16:34Mary? What are you going to do with
- 16:36the body anyway? So much can be said about these
- 16:42verses, but let's simply start by acknowledging how Jesus
- 16:46Christ chose to approach Mary. Notice that He didn't scold her,
- 16:53doesn't even rebuke her. He shows up and he tenderly and
- 17:00patiently guides her by way of reflection.
- 17:05She didn't get it the first time when the angels asked the
- 17:08question, Why are you weeping? And so he asks it again.
- 17:11That's patience. That's kindness.
- 17:15And more than that, he adds to that question to help her
- 17:18investigate her own heart, examine her own soul.
- 17:24I need you to think about this with me.
- 17:26This is the very first encounter that Jesus has with any one of
- 17:31his fathers after he vacated the tomb.
- 17:37What does it show that Christ prioritized comforting the one
- 17:42who is clearly in the most anguish, The one that was
- 17:47singing about Christ who conquered death is so rich with
- 17:52compassion for every single one of us in this place.
- 18:00The first thing that He does is come and clarify the confusion
- 18:05that is causing internal chaos in this woman's heart.
- 18:09That's the first thing that He does.
- 18:13And the Holy Spirit indicates that here, in order for you to
- 18:16know one of the primary truths that I must embrace about the
- 18:20resurrected crisis, that He cares about my tears.
- 18:27He actually cares. Yes, this one who's in control
- 18:31of all things, this one who defeated death, sin, Satan, one
- 18:40of the top things to do on his list on that resurrection
- 18:42morning is I must comfort Mary. That's the heart of Christ.
- 18:54And yet Mary in this moment shows us, we regularly fail to
- 18:58recognize the Lord as we should. You notice here that in the
- 19:04midst of her frantic state, Jesus is right there.
- 19:08So she's looking into the tomb. She sees the two angels, she
- 19:12answers their question. And having said this, she
- 19:16turned, you know, some try to figure out why she turned.
- 19:21Did she hear the steps? Did the angels motion?
- 19:24This is all speculation. One of my favorite ones though
- 19:26is that the angels and seeing Christ stood up and she looked.
- 19:35You know, Christ is near to us in our pain than we think, but
- 19:38we often miss it. We fail to believe it.
- 19:42We're looking for feeling. We're looking for something
- 19:44tangible. Some write it in the sky, and
- 19:48yes, this is a resurrection appearance, but it shows us a
- 19:50principle that is true to this day about the resurrected
- 19:52Christ. He's close, and you and I must
- 19:57develop the eyes of faith to see that.
- 20:00Well, Mary doesn't see that, and there's debate again about why
- 20:04she couldn't recognize him when she turned around.
- 20:05Right. She turns around and she sees
- 20:07him, but she doesn't see that it's Christ.
- 20:10Was it because it was still dark?
- 20:12Was it because her eyes were filled and blinded?
- 20:15Because of her tears? Was it because of her hysteria?
- 20:17Was it a combination of both? Some say it's because Jesus
- 20:19cloaked Himself, but it doesn't say He did that.
- 20:23So let's not distract ourselves from what this is trying to
- 20:25teach us. She did not perceive Him in the
- 20:29midst of her confusion and turmoil.
- 20:34We often do the same. Again.
- 20:38I alluded to the disciples who were on that water and it was
- 20:42about to ravish them and destroy them.
- 20:44And here's Christ coming and they say it's a ghost.
- 20:49It's a ghost. Hold on.
- 20:52The one who is sovereign over the waves, the one who is
- 20:54unmoved by the winds, the one who is for you, the one who sent
- 20:57you, you see as a ghost. You know, there are many good
- 21:03hearted believers who are more ready to acknowledge the
- 21:05presence of demons and Satan in the midst of their problems
- 21:12instead of acknowledging the Providence of Christ, instead of
- 21:15acknowledging the power of Christ, we're more ready to say
- 21:18it's a ghost than it's this. And you fail to see He's there.
- 21:22He's always been there. He's not surprised by the storm.
- 21:26You may be, but He's sovereign over it.
- 21:32And here's Mary where she looks at Jesus.
- 21:35He's right behind her, touching distance.
- 21:37And what does the text tell us? She supposed that he was the
- 21:41gardener. Why?
- 21:43Gardener of all things, you know, John tells us.
- 21:46Why are you there in John 20? Go to John 19.
- 21:50Look at John 19, verse 41. Now in the place where he was
- 21:56crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in
- 22:01which no one had been yet been laid.
- 22:04Jesus tomb was in a garden. And so Mary, turning to see this
- 22:09man standing there, assumes that in the early hours of the day
- 22:11the gardener has come to do his job.
- 22:13And in her desperation she looks at the gardener thinking maybe
- 22:17the gardener took Jesus away. Do you, do you know where you've
- 22:20laid him? Can you tell me where you've
- 22:21laid? I'll take him.
- 22:28I wonder if you and I can sense a theme that John is trying to
- 22:31illustrate. Obviously because he is being
- 22:33led by the Holy Spirit. Think about it with me.
- 22:37Christ was raised from a tomb in a garden, because long ago sin
- 22:42entered into the world in a garden.
- 22:47And in that garden long ago, the Lord walked in the cool of the
- 22:49day. To do what?
- 22:50To pronounce a curse, a sentence of death that would impact the
- 22:54world forever. But now, on this resurrection
- 22:59morning, the Lord stands again in a garden, not to pronounce a
- 23:03curse, but to send forth a message of hope and salvation
- 23:07until the world is fully restored again.
- 23:11This is a new day not just for Jesus.
- 23:14This is a new day not just for Mary.
- 23:15This is a new day for mankind. So Mary thinks it's the
- 23:23gardener. She's just she's falling apart
- 23:27and we can applaud it because she loves Jesus so much, but we
- 23:31also have to come gently say, Mary, there's you don't have to
- 23:34weep like this. And everything is about to
- 23:39change. She's about to realize very
- 23:40quickly this is no gardener. Why?
- 23:43Because look at verse 16. Jesus said to her, Mary, you
- 23:49can't be a gardener because you wouldn't know my name.
- 23:54You're not a landscaper. And I am sure that the way Jesus
- 23:58said Mary's name had a ring of familiarity.
- 24:05The tone, the pronunciation, everything about Jesus saying
- 24:10her name unlocked the revelation and simultaneously flooded her
- 24:14heart with joy and peace. It's an amazing thing to believe
- 24:21that this resurrected Christ knows us by name.
- 24:26Yes, we are sheep, but guess what?
- 24:29Sheep are named? You don't get A tag on your ear
- 24:31with a number on it. He knew her name.
- 24:36She knew how he said her name. So when he said it, she melts.
- 24:44And once again, Mary's reaction inspires me.
- 24:48The first thing that she does when she hears her name spoken
- 24:50in the way only Jesus can is turn her back to the angels and
- 24:54from her lips cry Rabboni. So the movement here seems to
- 24:59indicate that when she was looking into the tomb initially
- 25:01and the angels were there asking the question, she answered it.
- 25:04She senses the presence of someone else.
- 25:06She, I, I think this is what's happening.
- 25:08She turns her head only, but then when she hears her name,
- 25:15she turns completely and she says Rabboni.
- 25:19And John helps us in the meaning of this title means teacher, but
- 25:23it's more than Rabbi Rabboni. It's a, it's a term of yes,
- 25:27endearment. It's an emphatic way of saying
- 25:29rabbi. It's like my teacher, my master,
- 25:37my Lord. Listen, although it's personal,
- 25:42Mary shows us something so important.
- 25:44She gives Christ His due a title of dignity, respect and honor.
- 25:52That's what spontaneously shoots out of her heart and her lips
- 25:57when she discovers this is Him. And it teaches us something very
- 26:01important about how we should and how we must relate to Jesus
- 26:05Christ. Christ is intimate.
- 26:08Christ is loving. Christ is thoughtful.
- 26:13Christ oozes with mercy. Christ is very intentional with
- 26:17each of us. And Mary who experienced the
- 26:23love of Christ. Understand that this is the same
- 26:24Mary whom the Gospels tells us Jesus delivered her from 7
- 26:27demons. She knew the love of Christ.
- 26:30She knew the power of Christ. She knew the rescuing grace of
- 26:34Christ, and she in this moment is about to know a fresh
- 26:37revelation of her, of his personal lover.
- 26:39And yet none of that diminished her reverence for him.
- 26:47You know when I first got saved in the early years.
- 26:51Being a Christian, I notice how some people act as if the
- 26:53invitation to be close to Christ gives license for us to be
- 26:57cheeky with Christ, to be a little too casual with Jesus.
- 27:10Be careful, Praise God, He is incredibly approachable, but
- 27:17never forget that He is King. He is exalted forever, He's
- 27:22matchless in His Majesty. He is infinitely holy.
- 27:28The Seraphim dare not even look at him with their bare eyes.
- 27:35So he is shepherd, He is friend, He is the lover of our souls.
- 27:41But Mary shows us as close as Christ can get to us and longs
- 27:45to be with us. He used to be reverenced, He
- 27:53used to be feared. Rabbi and I and notice we come
- 28:00to the end of this story. We see Mary moving merely from
- 28:04turning her head to turning her body to now clinging to Christ
- 28:07and we know that because what does Jesus say in verse 17?
- 28:10Jesus said to her, do not cling to me.
- 28:12Now I'm aware that the King James, which was really the only
- 28:15and the most notable and famous Bible in the English speaking
- 28:18world for hundreds of years, renders this part as Touch Me
- 28:21Not so people get the idea that what Mary was doing here was
- 28:28just simply touching him. But the the language and the
- 28:31context suggests, especially in the original Greek, the word
- 28:35more accurately means to fasten oneself to.
- 28:38So you have to understand what Mary is doing here is clutching,
- 28:46grabbing, not just embracing. But what makes this prohibition
- 28:54from Christ more difficult is when we factor in the broader
- 28:57context of the resurrection. Because we heard at the opening
- 29:00of the service that when the group of women who visited the
- 29:02tomb were making their way back to the disciples to say what the
- 29:05angels told them, Jesus appears and he says, greetings.
- 29:07I love that. You know what that means.
- 29:09Hello. And that one hello.
- 29:14Obviously the site of Christ before them makes them drop to
- 29:20their knees and it and it says that they held fast to his feet.
- 29:23Why didn't he stop them from doing that?
- 29:26There's no indication at the end of Matthew that he says don't,
- 29:28don't, don't grab my feet. What about Thomas when he shows
- 29:33up in that meeting because he missed the first one when Christ
- 29:35appeared and Jesus looks at him, he says, Thomas, he extends his
- 29:39wounds. He says come touch him.
- 29:40He invites him to touch him. What about the end of Luke 24
- 29:45when Christ has another meeting with the disciples and he says,
- 29:48look, I'm flesh and bone here. Touch.
- 29:53So why in this case, when Mary Magdalene wants to grab him, the
- 29:57Lord says do not. And we don't have time today to
- 30:01explore every possible view. But in my opinion, the most
- 30:04convincing is that Jesus Christ understood the intent of Mary's
- 30:10action. Here He read the motive.
- 30:13He understood why she was doing this, and the motive behind her
- 30:17clinging is that she wanted to restrain him.
- 30:22She wanted to keep him. She wanted to have him the way
- 30:28she has always known him before his death.
- 30:32Physically present, practically accessible.
- 30:38And Jesus in the same verse, let's Mary know it would no
- 30:43longer be this way. I must ascend to the Father.
- 30:51And in doing so, Mary, along with every other true believer,
- 30:54would experience what Christ taught about and promised after
- 30:59His ascension and His exaltation, the indwelling of
- 31:01the Holy Spirit. This is a new era.
- 31:05This is going to be a big change for marrying the other followers
- 31:09of Christ. But Christ also assured them
- 31:13that it would be better. Sure, it's not physical.
- 31:16Sure it's not tangible. But it's going to be spiritual.
- 31:18And part of that spiritual blessing is that there is
- 31:20uninterrupted access to Christ any place, anywhere.
- 31:24All of us at the same time can have Christ one-on-one.
- 31:34Mary, this whole thing is not done yet.
- 31:38Don't think that it's going to be the way it was these past few
- 31:42years. It's going to be different.
- 31:45Don't cling to me. But we have to be careful,
- 31:50because although Christ has risen and he's ascended to
- 31:53heaven, and though we are enabled to engage with him on a
- 31:56spiritual level, the Lord Jesus Christ, pay attention, please.
- 32:00It's still flesh and bone. Understanding that important
- 32:05theological truth helps us make sense of what Jesus says in this
- 32:09verse. Notice this.
- 32:13He tells her to relay this message to the disciples.
- 32:16I am ascending to my Father, and your father, to my God and your
- 32:23God. So those who deny the deity of
- 32:27Christ will often come to this text and corner Christians and
- 32:30ask the following If you claim that Jesus Christ is God, how
- 32:34can he claim that he has a God? Resurrection is a very emotional
- 32:43experience by brothers and sisters.
- 32:44We have to be able to explain why we believe what we believe.
- 32:49He says my God. And this statement would have
- 32:55been easy to explain had he made it before his death and
- 32:59resurrection. Because we would, I hope, be
- 33:02able to say that the reason why Christ can say my God is because
- 33:06the Father is his God by virtue of his humanity.
- 33:10Jeremiah 3227 tells us the Lord who is the God of all flesh.
- 33:17And remember that verse, The Lord who is the God of all
- 33:21flesh. That's what the Lord says.
- 33:22So when Christ, the second person of the Trinity, takes on
- 33:25flesh, he assumes that the Father now is his God by virtue
- 33:28of his humanity. Great.
- 33:32But here's where people stumble. Jesus made this declaration,
- 33:37made this statement after his death and resurrection.
- 33:41If it was before his death, I could just say, yes, he became
- 33:45man because of that. He relates to God as his God.
- 33:52But now he rose from the grave. And if you found yourself
- 33:57troubled by this or maybe confronted, not knowing how to
- 34:01answer, today's the day where it changes.
- 34:04It's very simple really, because what we have to understand about
- 34:08the resurrection is that when Christ did indeed defeat death,
- 34:11when he did walk out of that tomb, he did not do so
- 34:15spiritually as some cults claim. He did not ascend invisibly as
- 34:21some assume He did, both with a glorified body.
- 34:26Christ physically arose. Christ physically ascended.
- 34:30You ready for this? Christ is physically seated at
- 34:34the right hand of God. So that same body that was
- 34:42pierced, the same body that was beaten, that same body that was
- 34:45hung, that same body that was prepared to be buried, that same
- 34:48body that went into the tomb is the same body that came out of
- 34:51the tomb. What does that lead to?
- 34:55Well, if he is still flesh, though glorified, then the truth
- 35:00of God being his God as a man still remains.
- 35:05And that's why even after his resurrection, that's why even
- 35:07after his ascension, where we find in Revelation where Jesus
- 35:10is giving letters to the churches, he still says in some
- 35:12of those places, my God, why? Because he is flesh forever, the
- 35:18God man seated at the right hand of power for eternity.
- 35:25We often think that when Christ came into this world and took on
- 35:28flesh, He unzipped the flesh and He just moved on as though
- 35:32things are going back to the way they were in eternity past.
- 35:35Not so when Christ came in the flesh.
- 35:37He added to His divinity humanity forever.
- 35:40That's the extent of the price that Christ paid for us.
- 35:46I wonder what a sight it was when Christ ascended to heaven
- 35:48and He went up to those gates and for the first time ever,
- 35:51flesh and blood glorified, entered into that place, and not
- 35:59just entered into that place, but walked up to the Father and
- 36:06sat beside him. And the Father accepts it
- 36:11because his Son accomplished his will.
- 36:17Oh, there's more to be said about this.
- 36:20Let's land it soon. Here.
- 36:22Notice that Jesus also said, yes, He is my Father, your
- 36:27Father, my God, and your God. But one might wonder, why didn't
- 36:33he just say our Father and our God?
- 36:38That would have simplified the message, right?
- 36:42Jesus is very careful with his words.
- 36:44Do you believe that? I believe that with his recorded
- 36:48words in red and with his entire word from Genesis to Revelation,
- 36:52he's very precise when he needs to be.
- 36:56The reason why Jesus makes this distinction, my Father, your
- 36:59Father, my God, your God, is because he wants to teach
- 37:01something very important about his status before God and that
- 37:05of the disciples. He does now invite the disciples
- 37:12to understand that He is your Father and He is your God.
- 37:18But he also wants to make clear that God being Father to him has
- 37:24always been from eternity past. God being Father to Christ is
- 37:30because of Christ's nature. That has never changed.
- 37:35But God being Father to the disciples and us is not because
- 37:39of our nature. It's because of adoption.
- 37:44He is my Father by virtue of my standing as the Son of God.
- 37:48It always was. He is your Father because of
- 37:52grace, and you were invited into that relationship because my
- 37:59resurrection seals that status. And that's why He can say what
- 38:08He said to Mary about how He identified these disciples.
- 38:13Look at it again in verse 17. Do not cling to me, for I have
- 38:18not yet ascended to the Father, but go to my brothers.
- 38:23My what? My brothers.
- 38:27So if you're sitting there today as we wrap things up and you
- 38:29think to yourself, that's a wonderful, wonderful explanation
- 38:32of how Christ is so soft and patient towards Mary Magdalene.
- 38:39But I'll admit, preacher, my devotion to Christ is nowhere
- 38:43near Mary's. I'm more like those two
- 38:48disciples on the road to Emmaus who are making their way back
- 38:50home like, well, I guess he wasn't the hope.
- 38:53A little bit of sadness there, but I'm ready to move on with my
- 38:56life. Mary can't seem to function
- 38:59here. And if that is what you're
- 39:04thinking in this place, remember where the 12 disciples were at
- 39:09this point, Judas is gone. Yes, Thomas is.
- 39:15Who knows where the others obviously fearful.
- 39:22The greatest failure that the disciples committed was walking
- 39:27away from Christ in his greatest time of need, denying Him,
- 39:33walking away from Him, and not believing what he had said about
- 39:38His own resurrection. This is the lowest of the low
- 39:41for the disciples. You know what Christ tells Mary
- 39:46to tell them. Go tell my brothers.
- 39:52If you said my servants, I would have been happy with that.
- 39:54If you said my anything, we can praise Christ for his
- 40:00acknowledgement, but of all things he says, go tell my
- 40:04brothers. The disciples walked away.
- 40:11The other disciples are hiding. They're still my brothers,
- 40:17they're still mine, they still belong to me.
- 40:24Who is this Jesus? You know, I'm fully aware that
- 40:28there are people in here who might want to be somewhere else.
- 40:35It's possible that you're here physically, but your heart is in
- 40:37a different place because you're perhaps disappointed with God,
- 40:44angry at God, living in sin, with all that you know about
- 40:49God. But you know what the
- 40:52resurrection does for those who believe it and those who have
- 40:54put their faith and trust in it. It secures a relationship with
- 40:59Christ that is unfathomable, that even in your distancing and
- 41:06your separation and your back turned on Him, if you belong to
- 41:11Him, the Lord looks at you with eyes of love.
- 41:21Go tell my brothers. He doesn't give up on us, we
- 41:27give up on Him. He's never failed us.
- 41:30We fail Him. He's never told us anything that
- 41:34was untrue. We don't believe Him.
- 41:41And yet in this pathetic display of devotion on the part of the
- 41:46disciples, Jesus says, Go tell my brothers, and what does Mary
- 41:56do? In verse 18, Mary Magdalene went
- 41:57and announced to the disciples, I have seen the Lord, and that
- 42:01he had said these things to her. Can you imagine this woman who
- 42:10had seven demons living inside of her, delivered from Christ
- 42:15and because of her love her though, though her faith was not
- 42:17fully developed, though she didn't have all the answers,
- 42:19Christ honored her longing. And He came so carefully and so
- 42:25lovingly to help her get out of this darkness.
- 42:28And more than that, He gives her a message to give to the
- 42:33apostles. Everything about Jesus and His
- 42:41resurrection appearances shows grace upon grace.
- 42:48Let me think about it. You would think that Christ
- 42:51might make an appearance to Pilate after he rose.
- 42:55Hey, Remember Me? What about the religious
- 42:58leaders? What are you going to say now?
- 43:01He doesn't do that. What does he go to?
- 43:05The first person? Mary lost, bewildered, heaving
- 43:17Mary, what about the disciples? Go tell my brothers this amazing
- 43:33God that we serve, that we can know, that we can draw near to,
- 43:37that we can experience, made what I'm speaking about
- 43:41available because He chose to come into this world, take on
- 43:46flesh, to be killed and crucified so He can purchase
- 43:54what we've always needed. Friday we recognize the bread
- 44:01and the cup. And in God's Providence, as we
- 44:05always do in the first Sunday of the month, we recognize the
- 44:07bread and the cup, but with an added reminder that flesh of His
- 44:15was broken on our behalf. But that same flesh rose,
- 44:20glorified, and Jesus Christ one day will come back bodily, and
- 44:25we will be with him forever. I wonder if you know this Jesus
- 44:29of whom I speak. I wonder if you've experienced
- 44:31this Jesus. These are not just nice stories
- 44:34that people put together. These are historical accounts,
- 44:39and they are meant to show you who Jesus is and what he is
- 44:43like. Are you not drawn to him?
- 44:47Are you not moved by Him? Do you not want to have Him?
- 44:52He is available and the way you access Him is by faith.
- 44:57The way you experience Him is in a moment you realize I am a
- 45:01Sinner, I am vile, I am guilty. It was my sin to put Him on that
- 45:06cross, but He paid for it and so I received this gift.
- 45:09Lord, forgive me, I repent. If you're willing to make me an
- 45:15enemy into a brother and to a sister into a child of God, if I
- 45:19can through you be able to call God the Holy 1 enthroned in
- 45:23heaven as Father, I receive it. Why would you not?
- 45:29What's better than that? And believer, maybe today you're
- 45:36like Mary. You have an intense love for
- 45:40Christ, but you're confused about some things.
- 45:45Jesus is near to you than you imagined.
- 45:49And if you never want to fall into that place again where
- 45:51you're weeping tears and staying up and losing sleep for things
- 45:54that you shouldn't get into the Word, know what he has said,
- 46:00know who he is, and you'll save yourself from unnecessary tears.
- 46:08Maybe some of you in here are like the disciples.
- 46:10You're here. You're not really here actually.
- 46:12So be it. He still loves you and he
- 46:17summons you. He doesn't want you to live
- 46:22another moment outside of his perfect will.
- 46:24Would you respond to his conviction today?
- 46:29So this is a table of remembrance of what Christ has
- 46:32done for us. And it is prescribed for
- 46:34Christians, those who have put their trust in the message that
- 46:38these emblems represent. So if you are a Christian here,
- 46:41you were invited to eat at this feast.
- 46:43But if you're here today visiting us, we're so glad that
- 46:45you're here. But know this, we honor Christ,
- 46:48we believe his word, we want to love Him and obey him above all
- 46:51else. And what he asks is that you
- 46:53would not partake if you do not belong to him.
- 46:56However, you can belong to Him, and while you see people taking
- 47:02these elements and you sit there, realize that these people
- 47:04are making a declaration. I've been saved by grace and you
- 47:07can be saved by that same grace. Every person walking up here is
- 47:11not holier than thou. Every person that's making their
- 47:13way up here saying I've been forgiven.
- 47:19Jesus is real to me, and I'm here to remind my own soul that
- 47:24it's because of what He has done that I am redeemed forever.
- 47:31So let's prepare our hearts, shall we, and ask Him to make
- 47:35himself more real to us by faith.
- 47:40We thank you, Father, for these truths.
- 47:45Just a glimpse of what you were like.
- 47:50Because when we see Christ, we see also who the Father is.
- 47:55Distinct, yes, and persons, but one, an entity, one in being.
- 48:00And what we've come yet again to the table to partake of the
- 48:02truth of what Christ has done for us 2000 years ago.
- 48:09Help our hearts savor these things with the revelation that
- 48:13the Christ who appeared to marry the Christ who asked for the
- 48:17disciples, as the Christ who loves us and sees us no
- 48:23differently, we rejoice in these things together in Jesus name,
- 48:28Amen. Amen.
