- 0:51SPEAKER_01: I am Comedy Wood and I am grateful that you have taken some time out of your day to spend it with me.
- 0:56SPEAKER_01: Today I wanted to talk about the concept of body positivity.
- 1:00SPEAKER_01: I think recently the term body body positivity has gotten maybe a negative rap, or maybe there are some false conceptions around the concept.
- 1:10SPEAKER_01: So the body positivity movement started gaining some movement over the past, I would say, decade or so, just in terms of you know really trying to recognize that we should start loving our bodies as they are rather than constantly trying to live up to some external expectation of what the perfect body is.
- 1:31SPEAKER_01: Many times when people hear the word body positivity, they think of that it's just all about you know loving your body as it is, but it there are some misconceptions that have come along with it too.
- 1:43SPEAKER_01: So let's just start with, you know, defining what body positivity even means.
- 1:47SPEAKER_01: So when I'm referring to body positivity, it's really coming to terms with and accepting the body that you have, accepting that bodies are gonna come in different shapes and sizes, and they're going to change as you go through life.
- 2:03SPEAKER_01: There's not this one perfect way that your body should be.
- 2:06SPEAKER_01: And because we are each individuals and we are so unique in so many different aspects, our body is included in that.
- 2:14SPEAKER_01: You know, there's really this intention behind the concept of body positivity to just come to that acceptance and really start learning how to be comfortable in your body as it is right now, and really understand that we are ultimately responsible for taking on what our body needs and what would be healthy for it in the long run.
- 2:36SPEAKER_01: It's really this concept of responsibility that comes with recognizing what our body needs and fulfilling that need, being able to respond to the sensations of hunger and also likewise being able to respond to the sensations of fullness.
- 2:53SPEAKER_01: And yes, it is about how can we do this in a healthy way?
- 2:57SPEAKER_01: So there are some uh misconceptions that I wanted to kind of clear up with the concept of body positivity.
- 3:04SPEAKER_01: So sometimes when people hear the concept of body positivity, they start to think that it means that people can just kind of let themselves go.
- 3:14SPEAKER_01: It's just about, yep, I accept who I am, I accept my body the way it is, and I'm just gonna sit on the couch and not and not do anything.
- 3:20SPEAKER_01: Body positivity isn't forcing yourself to necessarily feel perfect or beautiful a hundred percent of the time, day in and day out, either.
- 3:29SPEAKER_01: It's not about uh adoring every aspect of of the appearance of your body all the time, but what it is is it's about it's about releasing your worth as tied to your body size or structure.
- 3:46SPEAKER_01: It's not that you're a worse human being on a given day because on that particular day you don't feel so great about your body.
- 3:52SPEAKER_01: It's really about recognizing that overall that you are who you are, it's coming to that place of self-love and self-acceptance rather than I'm not good enough or I'm a bad person for the way that I might look or feel on this particular day.
- 4:08SPEAKER_01: Another misconception is that, you know, it body positivity is the is equating and giving permission people to not take care of themselves or to be unhealthy.
- 4:19SPEAKER_01: And it's not that at all.
- 4:21SPEAKER_01: It's really being, it's really encouraging people to be okay with themselves and getting into a place of self-love rather than self-hate.
- 4:30SPEAKER_01: Because the truth of the matter is if you are stuck in a place of self-hate or that negative space, it's very difficult to move forward and work on your health and your well-being.
- 4:40SPEAKER_01: So, really, it's about recognizing that your body is your own and it's not about living to somebody else's standard, but it's about finding what's right for you, getting into that place of really coming to your own self-worth and your own self-love so that you can then feel and figure out what is appropriate for yourself.
- 5:01SPEAKER_01: And finally, another misconception is that it means that you can just, you know, eat all the junk food that you want because we accept ourselves as whatever size we are, and it's it's simply not being body positivity, it is not being weight-driven.
- 5:17SPEAKER_01: When I talk about body positivity with my clients, it's not about a number on a scale.
- 5:21SPEAKER_01: Because when we really think about it, the number on the scale is arbitrary.
- 5:24SPEAKER_01: I mean, when when we really unpack it, you know, muscle mass actually weighs more than fat does.
- 5:30SPEAKER_01: So that number could actually be misconstrued.
- 5:34SPEAKER_01: It could be sometimes we have to dive deeper than what the number says.
- 5:38SPEAKER_01: And so body positivity is releasing the attachment to a specific number and really is looking towards your overall health, the overall way that you see yourself, the overall way that you talk to yourself, the overall way that you're able to create community in relationships with others.
- 5:54SPEAKER_01: It's about really coming to terms with just who you are as a person and less about a specific number on a scale.
- 6:01SPEAKER_01: So oftentimes I'm talking to clients who are recovering from eating disorders.
- 6:05SPEAKER_01: You know, what I do as a coach is not to replace the treatment of an eating disorder, but it's about then taking that person after they've been through the treatment for an eating disorder and really reshaping the mindset around how they see their body and the purpose of their body.
- 6:21SPEAKER_01: It's not just about being a physical being with a number attached to it, but it's about through this beautiful physical being that you are, this is how you're showing up in the world and you're able to live your life on a daily basis.
- 6:34SPEAKER_01: Hopefully that's helpful, especially going into the new year.
- 6:38SPEAKER_01: I know that there are many of us who want to get fitter or want to start putting a new exercise regime into practice, which of course is a wonderful thing.
- 6:47SPEAKER_01: It's wonderful as long as we're also talking about our overall health and it's not just about the number on the scale.
- 6:54SPEAKER_01: With that, I wish you a very happy new year, and I am hopeful that if there is ever a point in time where you find yourself struggling with the mindset around, you know, body image or the concept of body positivity, do feel free to reach out.
- 7:12SPEAKER_01: These are really important topics that we do need to bring to the to the forefront and shed some light on because there should not be shame or guilt around our bodies any longer.
- 7:24SPEAKER_01: Until next time, I'm Comedy Wood.
