- 0:39SPEAKER_04: Welcome in, everybody, to the Talk and Tech Podcast, powered by Guns Up Nation, part of the Guns Up Nation Podcast Network.
- 0:46SPEAKER_04: I am your host, Steven Rodriguez, my co-host Tristan McGonagall.
- 0:49SPEAKER_04: And Tristan, the Big 12 awards are a complete sham.
- 0:54SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I would say welcome to the uh talking tech therapy session.
- 0:58SPEAKER_03: That's uh, because I think that's kind of the theme of this episode is a lot of angst, a lot of anger that we're gonna uh just unleash on the mics, I would say, in a very healthy fashion.
- 1:08SPEAKER_04: Yeah, no doubt.
- 1:09SPEAKER_04: There's been some frustrating moments, I'd say, for Texas Tech this last week.
- 1:13SPEAKER_04: Uh, so we're gonna air it out.
- 1:15SPEAKER_03: Yeah, absolutely.
- 1:16SPEAKER_03: You know, I do we put too much emotional stake in our in how we feel about things in tech sports?
- 1:22SPEAKER_03: No, not at all.
- 1:23SPEAKER_03: I don't let this dictate my mood.
- 1:25SPEAKER_03: I don't let it make me mad.
- 1:27SPEAKER_03: Don't tell anybody it makes me mad.
- 1:29SPEAKER_03: It does make me mad.
- 1:30SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I I think our our future wives might disagree on that.
- 1:33SPEAKER_04: Um, you know, Kristen gets upset when I get upset, and Texas Tech Sports losing makes me upset.
- 1:41SPEAKER_04: So it's just a recipe for disaster.
- 1:43SPEAKER_03: I'm sure a lot of our listeners can relate, especially in the fall.
- 1:46SPEAKER_03: You know, it's always nice having entire Saturdays ruined.
- 1:50SPEAKER_03: So over something that's supposed to be fun, but it's not fun most of the time in that sport.
- 1:57SPEAKER_03: But here we are in basketball where it's also not fun right now.
- 2:01SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I mean, uh this past Saturday we were putting on a couple shower for my cousin Taylor and her fiance Ryan.
- 2:08SPEAKER_04: So I had to put on a brave face for the rest of the day after watching the nightmare that took place in Stillwater.
- 2:16SPEAKER_04: And uh, you know, it just it just changes my mood and I hate it.
- 2:20SPEAKER_03: You're an inspiration.
- 2:21SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I yeah, I look I look to you as a role model after these trying times.
- 2:25SPEAKER_03: You go through something as rough as watching that uh basketball game, and you come out, you support your family like something tragic that just happened in your life.
- 2:33SPEAKER_03: And I'm not gonna lie, I'm a little I'm a little I'm I'm a little disappointed in your family if they didn't, you know, consult you at all or try to you know make you feel better about it.
- 2:41SPEAKER_03: Like I do not what family's supposed to do.
- 2:42SPEAKER_03: Like, who cares about the couple shower?
- 2:44SPEAKER_03: You know, one of the family members is clearly hurting, and I think that should probably take a little priority.
- 2:48SPEAKER_04: Yeah, well, the alcohol helped, so I'll give them that.
- 2:51SPEAKER_04: They started giving me drinks as soon as the game was over, and uh, you know, we we saw that take place.
- 2:57SPEAKER_04: So it ended up being a good night.
- 3:00SPEAKER_04: Great, great weekend overall, except for the tech loss.
- 3:04SPEAKER_04: But first off, we have to talk about the Big 12 awards because they came out and pissed off all of Texas Tech Twitter.
- 3:09SPEAKER_04: It was a complete nightmare, not complete nightmare, I should say.
- 3:13SPEAKER_04: Bryson Williams got the credit that he deserved for the most part.
- 3:16SPEAKER_04: All Big 12 first team for Bryson Williams.
- 3:19SPEAKER_04: Um, and then we had four other Red Raiders get honorable mention for all Big 12 in Adonis Arms, Kevin McCullough, Kevin O'Banner, and Marcus Sanosilva.
- 3:29SPEAKER_04: Um, so you know, we were represented, but not represented quite as much as what we wanted.
- 3:36SPEAKER_03: I mean, we we finished third in the conference, you know.
- 3:38SPEAKER_03: You would think that you would be represented on even the second team some more than we were, you know.
- 3:42SPEAKER_03: It just it was weird to see our players completely absent for the most part.
- 3:47SPEAKER_03: I'm obviously not surprised that Bryson Williams got the credit he deserved.
- 3:50SPEAKER_03: I think it's fair to say that he was our best player this year.
- 3:52SPEAKER_03: I don't know if there's much competition for that right now.
- 3:54SPEAKER_03: Um, but it's really frustrating.
- 3:56SPEAKER_03: I'm even frustrated that he didn't get newcomer of the year.
- 3:58SPEAKER_03: I know Brockington is obviously a very solid stud for the Iowa State Cyclones, but I mean, just Bryson put his the team on his back offensively so often that you know he really punched in our record and whenever we really needed it.
- 4:11SPEAKER_03: And so it's just frustrating to see him.
- 4:13SPEAKER_03: He got credit, first team is obviously nothing to Scott Bat.
- 4:16SPEAKER_03: That's a huge deal.
- 4:17SPEAKER_03: Um, so but it's for him to have to get Newcomer of the Year, it just kind of hurt.
- 4:20SPEAKER_03: That kind of that definitely kind of stung.
- 4:23SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah.
- 4:24SPEAKER_04: And I, you know, that one I wasn't so upset with because I do know that Iowa State would be nothing without Isaiah Brockington, and he had a phenomenal year and he deserved it too.
- 4:33SPEAKER_04: Uh, you know, whatever on Newcomer of the Year.
- 4:36SPEAKER_04: Bryson did get his credit with all Big 12 first team, so I'm not mad about that.
- 4:40SPEAKER_04: What I you know, what pissed off pretty much everybody was one not having any red raider on the all Big 12 defensive team, and two, Scott Drew winning coach of the year over Mark Adams.
- 4:52SPEAKER_04: Uh, both of those are egregious.
- 4:54SPEAKER_04: Um, but for I I can't really tell which one I think is worse.
- 5:00SPEAKER_04: I think I think for me, not having any red raider on the defensive team is the worst part of all this.
- 5:09SPEAKER_03: I I was gonna I was gonna ask you that.
- 5:11SPEAKER_03: Like, what do you think was more egregious?
- 5:12SPEAKER_03: What was a bigger diss onto the Texas Tech Raider Raiders?
- 5:15SPEAKER_03: Coach Adams not winning coach of the year, which we all kind of thought was a shoe-win.
- 5:19SPEAKER_03: Um, or our players not getting the uh the credit they deserve on all Big 12 defense.
- 5:24SPEAKER_03: You know, we're like the most defensey defense team in the Big 12, it's what we're famous for, and we didn't get any credit for it, which was just interesting.
- 5:31SPEAKER_03: So you get more heartburn from that than the coach of the year.
- 5:34SPEAKER_04: Yeah, because coach of the year, you can at least make a case for three of them in Scott Drew, Otzelberger, and Mark Adams.
- 5:43SPEAKER_04: You can make a strong to solid argument for all three of those guys.
- 5:48SPEAKER_04: If you look at where all these teams were at on April 4th, when Mark Adams was hired, Scott Drew had a multitude of returners from that national championship team come back.
- 6:02SPEAKER_04: Yeah, he lost four really big pieces, but to get guys like Matthew Mayer back, to get uh LJ Cryer and Adam Flagler and Chama Chachwa and Flo Thamba, to get the all these guys played pretty solid roles on the championship team last year.
- 6:18SPEAKER_04: And Mark Adams started with nothing, had to re-recruit his own players, had to recruit the transfer portal like no other, uh and and hire a whole staff on top of that.
- 6:30SPEAKER_04: And for him to finish third in the conference when nobody expected us to finish that high, you know, Baylor was like a preseason number seven or something.
- 6:40SPEAKER_04: We were preseason unranked.
- 6:42SPEAKER_04: And he goes in, finishes third in the conference.
- 6:44SPEAKER_04: And if a couple baskets go differently, he probably you know potentially ties it for winning the Big 12 with Texas Tech.
- 6:52SPEAKER_04: So, you know, this is a recency bias sort of thing, I think, with Scott Drew winning it, um, because of how poorly we ended the season.
- 7:02SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I think the whole thing boils down to, like you said, who had to do a complete reconstruction?
- 7:08SPEAKER_03: You know, a lot of obviously, you know, Baylor fans are excited about it.
- 7:10SPEAKER_03: And like you said, it's not like you can just straight up say he doesn't flat out deserve it at all.
- 7:14SPEAKER_03: No, I mean he's he's he's still a fantastic coach, he still was able to pull it together to have a great year.
- 7:20SPEAKER_03: But this is like where my heartburn is.
- 7:22SPEAKER_03: You know, I tweeted about this last night, and other Red Raiders were say sharing the same sort of feelings about it.
- 7:26SPEAKER_03: Is who was counting the defending national champions out?
- 7:30SPEAKER_03: Was anyone gonna count the defending national champions out?
- 7:33SPEAKER_03: It's and he had his whole staff there, he had a good chunk of his players back.
- 7:37SPEAKER_03: Yes, I know he had to build up his team a little bit more, but that's just part of coaching, it's a part of being a college coach, is you're gonna have to work with new players every single year.
- 7:44SPEAKER_03: Um, it's just it depends on how many new ones are in or not, and it depends on the veteran T of the team.
- 7:49SPEAKER_03: But like you said, Martin Adams had to completely redo it.
- 7:52SPEAKER_03: We we get completely scalped by a guy that went to an inner interconference school, and there's no no staff left, and so he has to build up the entire program all over again.
- 8:03SPEAKER_03: So I think that's a little more than having to fill in some shoes of good players.
- 8:07SPEAKER_03: And the thing is that that Big 12 tweet got ratioed out the wazoo.
- 8:11SPEAKER_03: I don't think I think the only people that agreed with the choice was Baylor fans, and obviously, you know, if if I was in Baylor's shoes as well, I'd be like, Yeah, yeah, we won't turn down awards like that.
- 8:22SPEAKER_03: But pretty much every other fan base was saying it's it's madness that it wasn't Mark Adams or Iowa State.
- 8:29SPEAKER_03: Like those were the two clear-cut choices, and they couldn't pull together like that.
- 8:33SPEAKER_03: And I know that the funny thing is it's I know that it's the the Big 12 coaches that vote on it, and I think that's probably why there was a huge uh amount of recency biases that affected it.
- 8:40SPEAKER_03: You know, they probably just saw that TechStech was falling off the rails on the road, like we were, and saying that, okay, well, Scott shared it won a share of the Big 12 championship.
- 8:50SPEAKER_04: Well, you know, there was another thing on the on the Scott Drew argument for people that were pro-Scott Drew winning Big 12 coach of the year, and that was he coached through all these injuries that they had this year.
- 9:00SPEAKER_04: They had so many injuries.
- 9:02SPEAKER_04: Mark Adams had a lot of injuries as well.
- 9:04SPEAKER_04: I mean, you're looking at it's just different stuff because Terrence Shannon's been playing hurt all season.
- 9:10SPEAKER_04: Kevin McCullough has been playing hurt the majority of the season, or he's been out.
- 9:15SPEAKER_04: I mean, we had that whole stretch where we missed players because of COVID issues.
- 9:20SPEAKER_04: And yeah, Scott Drew has dealt with injuries.
- 9:22SPEAKER_04: Uh, Flagler was hurt for a couple games, Cryer was hurt for a couple games, Chama Chacho was out for the season.
- 9:27SPEAKER_04: I get it.
- 9:28SPEAKER_04: But for them to make that argument, to me, they've dealt with the same amount of stuff.
- 9:33SPEAKER_04: I mean, in terms of key players being injured and missing games and still finding ways to win.
- 9:38SPEAKER_04: The thing that I think puts Mark Adams over Scott Drew or anybody in the Big 12 is his record against the good teams.
- 9:46SPEAKER_04: He went five and one against the top four seeds in this conference.
- 9:50SPEAKER_04: He lost one time to Kansas at Allen Fieldhouse on a on a very tough shot by Ochaiogbaji.
- 9:58SPEAKER_04: If not, he would have gone six and oh against those the top three teams that aren't Texas Tech.
- 10:03SPEAKER_04: You know, to me, I'm sorry, that's to me, that's the reason Mark Adams deserved it.
- 10:09SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean, we're we're talking about the coach that got swept by Mark Adams.
- 10:12SPEAKER_03: You know, we went to we went to undefeated Baylor's house, number one Baylor, I believe.
- 10:16SPEAKER_03: Was it number one or number two Baylor?
- 10:18SPEAKER_03: Beat him there, and we end up we complete the sweep in Lubbock, you know, pretty effort effortlessly in Lubbock.
- 10:24SPEAKER_03: And it's it's just so frustrating to see that, you know.
- 10:28SPEAKER_03: And it's just they had the chance to capitalize on a big story.
- 10:32SPEAKER_03: They even the national media was recognizing that sex tech is here to stay, that tech chose the right guy for the job and was able to rebuild TechStech into not missing a beat and even taking a step forward this year as opposed to last season.
- 10:42SPEAKER_03: And it just complete misopportunity to celebrate that rather than I just kind of feel like they clapped old news.
- 10:49SPEAKER_03: Uh, and I know that was just last season that you know Baylor had their magnificent season, but it's now, it's today.
- 10:55SPEAKER_03: You know, you get you gotta look at the season as a now rather than I feel like it just was like an accumulation of what Baylor's been doing lately, like the past couple seasons.
- 11:02SPEAKER_03: It just felt like an unfair shot.
- 11:05SPEAKER_03: And uh, I just I know I the funny thing is, I know Mark Adams doesn't really care.
- 11:09SPEAKER_03: He'll probably like, wow, he deserves it.
- 11:10SPEAKER_03: Good for him, kind of thing.
- 11:12SPEAKER_03: But it's just we're mad for him.
- 11:13SPEAKER_03: We're we're probably way more upset than anyone on the team.
- 11:16SPEAKER_04: Yeah, exactly.
- 11:17SPEAKER_04: I mean, Mark Adams couldn't care less about this award or or you know any recognition at all.
- 11:22SPEAKER_04: He's he's just a humble dude that doesn't care about any of this stuff.
- 11:25SPEAKER_04: But that's why we have what we have so we can express our anger for him uh in this.
- 11:31SPEAKER_04: And to me, uh like I I think so much of the coach of the year award goes into expectations and what you think the team is going to do and how they exceed those expectations.
- 11:43SPEAKER_04: That's why Bill Self doesn't win the award every single year, because he's expected to do what he does.
- 11:49SPEAKER_04: I think Scott Drew is at that point as well, where you just expect him to have Baylor at the top of the conference.
- 11:56SPEAKER_04: This is why I would even put Otzelberger above Scott Drew.
- 11:59SPEAKER_04: If I had a vote, I would put Adams, Otzelberger, and then Scott Drew, because Ozelberger turned that Iowa State uh two-win Iowa State team to a 20-win Iowa state team.
- 12:10SPEAKER_04: And uh Mark Adams completely had to rebuild the program that was left in the dust by Beard and finished third in the conference.
- 12:17SPEAKER_04: I mean, with a 12 and what 12 and six record in uh in Big 12 play.
- 12:23SPEAKER_04: Just it was a really uh it sucked, it sucked, quite frankly, not to see Mark Adams win this award.
- 12:30SPEAKER_04: Uh, I know he doesn't care about it, but but I'm pissed off for him because he deserved it.
- 12:35SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I think he capitalized on that perfectly.
- 12:36SPEAKER_03: And I think that Iowa State was even projected to finish dead last in the conference.
- 12:40SPEAKER_03: And then then they fly up to the middle with just like a huge step from uh last year.
- 12:45SPEAKER_03: Yeah, again, like you said, those two really deserved it before uh Scott Drew.
- 12:48SPEAKER_03: And I think that's that's why I was so frustrated about it as well.
- 12:51SPEAKER_03: I think I already voiced that is that you know, we're talking about the undef that the the reigning national champions, you know, they they were expected to be good.
- 12:59SPEAKER_03: I don't care what happens.
- 13:01SPEAKER_03: If you won the national championship last season, no one's expecting you to be bad, you know.
- 13:05SPEAKER_03: And I I just again that's just that's just what frustrates me.
- 13:08SPEAKER_03: I think everyone expected Texas Tech to take a step back.
- 13:10SPEAKER_03: I think everyone did, and they didn't.
- 13:12SPEAKER_03: It's just it's just frustrating.
- 13:14SPEAKER_03: I and at the end of the day, it's it's it's partially on this team, you know, because we did blow it in on some terrible games, and we were we'll talk about the the the the last one here in a bit, but it's our our road record left a lot to be desired.
- 13:28SPEAKER_03: For some reason, this team was ready to slay the best teams in the country in the in the conference there for the country, but whenever it came to the middling or lower ends of this conference, we just couldn't get it together on the road in less hostile environments as well.
- 13:40SPEAKER_03: It just it was it was it was head scratching in that sense.
- 13:43SPEAKER_03: So I think we did kind of pay for it in this award, yeah.
- 13:46SPEAKER_04: And I think it like I said earlier, the the last two losses, the TCU one and the uh Oklahoma State one really hurt us not playing well against Kansas State.
- 13:55SPEAKER_04: But again, this is all playing without Kevin McCullough.
- 13:57SPEAKER_04: I mean, our offense has looked really bad without Kevin McCullough there, and we're really missing him, but we'll get to that in a second.
- 14:03SPEAKER_04: Just to finish off the the awards, uh, we have the number one defense in the country, and we didn't get one player on the defensive team.
- 14:09SPEAKER_04: That's ridiculous.
- 14:10SPEAKER_04: It's it's truly ridiculous.
- 14:12SPEAKER_04: Kevin McCullough, I don't I don't even care.
- 14:14SPEAKER_04: Put Bryson Williams on there, put Davion Warren on there, put put Malik Wilson on there, put somebody from this team on first team defense or on all defensive team because I mean who you got on here?
- 14:28SPEAKER_04: Marquise Noel from Kansas State, Ozaboyan from West Virginia.
- 14:34SPEAKER_04: These teams were not good, and they still have these guys represented here on the Big 12 all-defensive team.
- 14:39SPEAKER_04: Dewan Harris for Kansas, he's fine.
- 14:42SPEAKER_04: Is he as good a defender as Kevin McCullough?
- 14:44SPEAKER_04: I don't think so.
- 14:46SPEAKER_04: I mean, really, you could put I think the only one I agree with on the defensive team is probably Musa Sise from Oklahoma State because that guy blocks every shot in the world.
- 14:56SPEAKER_04: I mean, he was fantastic for them this season.
- 14:58SPEAKER_04: But other than that, I mean, Shaama Chacho was hurt too.
- 15:02SPEAKER_04: So I don't know.
- 15:03SPEAKER_04: I I just feel like that's ridiculous to have the I think the Ken Pom number one defense and not have anybody represented on your all defensive team.
- 15:14SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I don't want to sit here and sound like we're repeating ourselves, but like like you just said, I mean, this this is that's what we're famous for, that's what we've been famous here for for a long time, is that Mark Adams defense.
- 15:22SPEAKER_03: Even John Rothstein has a freaking t-shirt about our defense now.
- 15:26SPEAKER_03: Like that's that's how real, that's how legit it is.
- 15:29SPEAKER_03: And do you think that maybe our players being overlooked for the year with these awards are because our defense is so balanced that like everyone can play defense, everyone plays into the Mark Adams defense well rather than guys just standing out amongst their teammates on that side of the court.
- 15:44SPEAKER_03: Do you think that plays into it at all?
- 15:46SPEAKER_04: I think it's what plays into the entirety of these awards is this is a team.
- 15:53SPEAKER_04: These guys play like a team, so not one guy really stands out except for Bryson Williams, who's made strides on the offensive side of the floor.
- 16:01SPEAKER_04: But defensively, they do it as a unit.
- 16:03SPEAKER_04: Offensively, for the most part, they do it as a unit.
- 16:06SPEAKER_04: I mean, it's a it's a team-oriented team.
- 16:09SPEAKER_04: You know, they don't have that one go-to guy, really.
- 16:12SPEAKER_04: And that's what's bitten us in the butt a few times, but that's why we're not really recognizing these awards.
- 16:17SPEAKER_04: And and that's where I thought that Mark Adams had the advantage in coach of the year because he really made them play as a team for the majority of the season and made one of the strongest defenses, if not the strongest defense in the country.
- 16:31SPEAKER_04: And uh he's not getting recognized for that, and that's a shame.
- 16:34SPEAKER_03: Well, I think that the positive that could hopefully come out of all this is you know, waking our guys up, lighting a fire underneath them to give it.
- 16:41SPEAKER_03: I bet a lot of our guys are feeling a little jaded, like they're not getting the credit they deserve, and they're not.
- 16:44SPEAKER_03: Neither is their coach.
- 16:46SPEAKER_03: So use this, you know, make it some bulletin material, go out and use it on the practice in the practice room, you know, because a lot of people are already counting Texas Tech out early in the tournament.
- 16:54SPEAKER_03: Lots of people are saying this is the first round exit team now, you know, uh sweet 16 at best kind of thing.
- 16:59SPEAKER_03: Uh, but it so use this and go forward with it, you know.
- 17:04SPEAKER_03: Like once you go and have a great postseason, who cares about these awards?
- 17:08SPEAKER_03: So it's just the only reason why we're sitting here fixated on it is that you know, we haven't moved on to the postseason yet.
- 17:13SPEAKER_03: So once things get going again, this is all gonna be history, but it's just again, you'd like to see our guys get a little more credit than they did.
- 17:19SPEAKER_03: I just I just hope they use this to go kick some more ass.
- 17:22SPEAKER_04: The one thing that people really remember from past seasons of college basketball comes up here in a couple weeks, so uh, you know, and that's the NCAA tournament.
- 17:32SPEAKER_04: So, oh yeah, you're right, these awards ultimately do not matter.
- 17:35SPEAKER_04: Uh, it's just kind of upsetting not getting uh the recognition that I thought we deserved.
- 17:40SPEAKER_04: But uh, let's move on because um, you know, part of the reason we weren't really represented in these Big 12 awards was that we're limping into the postseason.
- 17:51SPEAKER_04: It sucks.
- 17:52SPEAKER_04: Uh, it sucks to watch this team over the last three weeks.
- 17:56SPEAKER_04: Uh, we've had pretty significant leads in the second halves of the TCU, the Kansas State, and the Oklahoma State games, and we have coasted through the rest of the game and let the other teams get back in it.
- 18:08SPEAKER_04: And we've lost two of those three games, and it's been really disappointing to see uh from this team that you just don't expect that from.
- 18:16SPEAKER_03: Yeah, this the offense has been a mess.
- 18:18SPEAKER_03: You know, our defense has obviously you know showed up well enough, but you're right.
- 18:22SPEAKER_03: I I don't think we've missed a player as much as we had of all season, like Kevin McColler.
- 18:25SPEAKER_03: We really need that facilitator back because like there's no rhythm on offense, it makes you want to barf, it makes you feel like you're back in the past couple seasons where there's no sort of teamwork or cooperation on the offensive side, the ball gets stuck, it moves around, doesn't get to the hoop.
- 18:39SPEAKER_03: And it's just it's really frustrating to watch.
- 18:41SPEAKER_03: And you thought we thought we were past this chapter, but it really looks like that a facilitating guard is something that's gonna be a must in every Mark Adams team because it's it's missed right now completely.
- 18:53SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it's uh uh we scored two points in the final nine and a half minutes of that Oklahoma State game.
- 18:58SPEAKER_04: That tells you all you need to know.
- 18:59SPEAKER_04: Uh, it's it's like watching just a slow motion car crash at the end of games with this Texas Tech team these last few games.
- 19:07SPEAKER_04: Um, and it, you know, it's very similar to I hate to bring up bad memories, but the Texas football game two years ago when we had that massive lead and we start playing pre-vent defense and slowly but surely let them get back into it and eventually they win the game.
- 19:23SPEAKER_04: And you can see that same sort of thing happen to our offense once we get a decent lead with still a lot of time left to play.
- 19:32SPEAKER_04: We start running down the clock, we start holding the ball, we don't we the ball stops moving, like you said.
- 19:37SPEAKER_04: We can't find a way to get it into Bryson in the post.
- 19:40SPEAKER_04: No one is moving off ball.
- 19:42SPEAKER_04: It's frustrating, it's really frustrating to watch.
- 19:45SPEAKER_04: And I mean, yeah, you get Kevin McCullough, I think most of these issues are solved, and this is just a really crappy time for him to be hurt.
- 19:54SPEAKER_03: It really is, man.
- 19:55SPEAKER_03: These these road games have been pretty pathetic.
- 19:57SPEAKER_03: Like I said earlier, you know, just why we're getting on the on the road to lesser competition.
- 20:00SPEAKER_03: I don't know what happens to us.
- 20:02SPEAKER_03: You know, we're absolute street dogs when we're on the road playing a great team, but whenever we play teams that are worse than us, they really are.
- 20:08SPEAKER_03: We don't know what to do.
- 20:09SPEAKER_03: I I we we just freeze up.
- 20:11SPEAKER_03: I get it, it's the Big 12, it's a bloodbath.
- 20:13SPEAKER_03: But tech is better than Oklahoma State, TechStech is better than TCU, and to just freeze up and blow it at the end, like we have, whatever we have it, it's just it it gives you some concern because at this time of the year, you really hope that this is where we're able to execute and finish teams off because that's what March Madness is all about is you you have to finish them off, you can't let them back in it.
- 20:36SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and I think this is where the inconsistency of Terrence Shannon has really been highlighted.
- 20:43SPEAKER_04: Um, you know, obviously he's playing hurt, uh, you know, he's dealt with these back issues all season, and tech Twitter doesn't help because you get half half of tech Twitter after a loss is uh Terrence Shannon sucks, he's the worst player, not a leader, all this type of thing.
- 20:59SPEAKER_04: And then the other half is just protecting everything he does and you know, always behind him.
- 21:04SPEAKER_04: There's no there's nobody in the middle with Terrence Shannon right now.
- 21:08SPEAKER_04: I want to be in the middle here because he's clearly playing hurt, but also if you're going to play, we need more from you, dude.
- 21:16SPEAKER_04: We just do.
- 21:17SPEAKER_04: You can't have four points, you can't have six points.
- 21:20SPEAKER_04: We need you to score, we need you to get fouled and go to the free throw line.
- 21:25SPEAKER_04: And you know, I'm I'm not blaming him for being hurt, but honestly, it's it's just hard to watch the last couple games of him not do much, and uh, you know, I I love the guy, I love that he came back, I love that he is at Texas Tech when he could have gone a whole bunch of other places, he could have gone to the NBA.
- 21:46SPEAKER_04: Like, I I really do love Terrence Shannon, but man, we need to have a more consistent Terrence Shannon if we're gonna go far in March.
- 21:53SPEAKER_03: It's it's that's eloquently put.
- 21:55SPEAKER_03: He has been an issue all year.
- 21:57SPEAKER_03: You know, we don't really know what TJ we're gonna get.
- 21:59SPEAKER_03: That's kind of how it's Felts every game is like what TJ are we gonna get?
- 22:02SPEAKER_03: And it's kind of been a decider of what the game will look like.
- 22:05SPEAKER_03: I mean, that's what happens with your best players.
- 22:07SPEAKER_03: I mean, we've all season going into this, we're saying you know, TJ Shannon is our best player, he's our NBA talent, but unfortunately, he just like you said, I feel like the injuries have really uh constrained him too much to to fill that role, and thankfully Bryce Williams has.
- 22:21SPEAKER_03: It's just it's it's really frustrating.
- 22:23SPEAKER_03: I hope we have this this next you know couple weeks to get rested up before the big time because, like you said, if he doesn't show up, I mean, I think a lot of the haters are gonna be right.
- 22:32SPEAKER_03: We might be an early exit.
- 22:34SPEAKER_04: Well, yeah, and I I and I love I love what Davion Warren and Adonis Arms have done uh through you know the majority of the season and they've each had big games.
- 22:44SPEAKER_04: But you know, to be frank, Terrence Shannon Jr.
- 22:47SPEAKER_04: is better than those guys on the offensive side of the floor, and he needs to show it.
- 22:51SPEAKER_04: And um, you know, if Davion Warren can play like he he didn't play very good against Oklahoma State, but if he played like he did against uh uh Kansas State and TCU, I mean that would be very nice if we could get some offense from him.
- 23:05SPEAKER_04: Uh even Clarence, if he could step in like he did earlier in the season in those big games.
- 23:10SPEAKER_04: I mean, we just need somebody else.
- 23:12SPEAKER_04: And uh, you know, Kevin O'Banner's been inconsistent too, uh, but he played great against Oklahoma State.
- 23:18SPEAKER_04: He's always hustling for rebounds and stuff.
- 23:20SPEAKER_04: There's times where I just forget that TJ's on the floor, or Davion's on the floor, or whoever there's a multitude of other guys that just don't make an impact at points in the game that you need you need to make an impact.
- 23:35SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I think you you really nailed a the feeling that's kind of been what TJ has been all season, is as a fan, is like, oh, TJ's on the court.
- 23:42SPEAKER_03: Like, you don't really notice it, it's not felt.
- 23:45SPEAKER_03: And I don't know if you can put a tangible description behind that, but I think that's probably the best way to say it is like whenever you whenever he's out there balling out, you know it's TJ, but otherwise, you don't really know if he's out there, you know.
- 23:55SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I don't know if that doesn't make any sense to listeners, but I'm just trying to, you know, describe how it's felt all season.
- 24:01SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it's been it's been unfortunate.
- 24:03SPEAKER_04: And no, it's not his fault, you know.
- 24:05SPEAKER_04: I'm not blaming the guy, he's just playing through injury, and that sucks.
- 24:09SPEAKER_04: It sucks that we've been dealing with these injuries all year long with TJ and McCullough.
- 24:14SPEAKER_04: So, you know, I really hope those guys can get healthy and get right uh before you know the biggest games of the season that are coming up here pretty soon, because uh, you know, as of right now, we're kind of limping into the postseason, and that is the last thing I want to have.
- 24:27SPEAKER_03: We've kind of freefalled.
- 24:28SPEAKER_03: I mean, since we're still in basketball here, you know, we were talking about you know just like a couple weeks ago that you know we can really hold on to this two seed, and we've seen ourselves drop down to a confirmed three seed, and now we're at risk to a four seed.
- 24:41SPEAKER_03: You know, I know for a while back we're like, we feel pretty good about being a three-seed now, but it's just it's shown the the lethargic finish here is really going to put that recency bias to that seeding.
- 24:53SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and I mean it's fair, honestly.
- 24:56SPEAKER_04: If if we don't win the first game of the Big 12 tournament, we're probably gonna go down to a four-seed.
- 25:01SPEAKER_04: And uh, if we don't beat Iowa State on Thursday, it will probably be a four seed.
- 25:05SPEAKER_04: And so just be prepared for that.
- 25:07SPEAKER_04: But um, you know, I I I'm not giving up on this team.
- 25:10SPEAKER_04: I know we've been pretty negative to start off the pod, but you know, we've seen this team go through some low points through the season and pick themselves right back up.
- 25:18SPEAKER_04: So, you know, we've blown some some games at or like earlier in the year when we lost to Kansas State and lost to OU, we would come back and then we beat Baylor in Texas or we'd beat Kansas or we'll do something like that after a bad loss.
- 25:31SPEAKER_04: I trust this coaching staff to get us right in the biggest moment of the year.
- 25:37SPEAKER_04: Um, I you know, it stinks that Kevin McCullough has missed these last few games, but he has gotten time to heal.
- 25:44SPEAKER_04: He's gotten some more rest.
- 25:45SPEAKER_04: I'm not sure if he's even ready to go, but we got Bacho back.
- 25:49SPEAKER_04: You know, Shannon hopefully uh is is feeling a little better come Big 12 tourney time, but um, you know, it's it's been frustrating.
- 25:58SPEAKER_04: Uh, but I do trust this team uh to they still have the pieces to make a run.
- 26:04SPEAKER_03: Hey, I said this at the top of the pod that this was the therapy session podcast.
- 26:07SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and I'm sorry for the listeners that you know we are typically a very optimistic duo that this is a I've been a pretty downer of a podcast, but it just unfortunately, you know, whenever you have these disappointing games pile on, it's hard not to voice your frustrations about it.
- 26:22SPEAKER_03: I just we don't want to fake it either, you know.
- 26:24SPEAKER_03: I'm sure our listeners are just upset as upset about it as our as we are.
- 26:27SPEAKER_03: But now that the regular season has concluded, no matter what, to me, this was an insanely successful season.
- 26:34SPEAKER_03: This will always be a season I look uh fondly on, no matter what happens for the rest of the postseason.
- 26:39SPEAKER_03: It really won't.
- 26:40SPEAKER_03: We went undefeated at home in Mark Adams' first season, and we went and beat the bad guy twice in the first season.
- 26:47SPEAKER_03: So no matter what, this is a huge success of a season, but I do want more.
- 26:51SPEAKER_03: Obviously, we always will.
- 26:52SPEAKER_03: Um, and I think they're capable of it.
- 26:54SPEAKER_03: Like you said, I trust this coaching staff to get them right, and I know these guys will show up in the big time.
- 26:58SPEAKER_03: I think, I think perhaps them knowing that this these games don't mean as much to them uh numbers-wise or emotionally, it has a reflection on their game plan gameplay.
- 27:10SPEAKER_03: It shouldn't be that way, but that's just kind of how it's felt.
- 27:12SPEAKER_04: Hey, the rest of the games are neutral site from here on, so it's not any more true road games, it's not any more true home games.
- 27:19SPEAKER_04: Texas Tech fans travel, uh, that's a great thing.
- 27:23SPEAKER_04: Uh, so during the tournament, during both tournaments, I should say, uh, we're gonna have our fans there, and they're we're always gonna support our guys through thick and thin.
- 27:32SPEAKER_04: It's not just a, you know, when we win, we'll support them.
- 27:35SPEAKER_04: When we lose, we won't.
- 27:36SPEAKER_04: It's not that sort of deal.
- 27:37SPEAKER_04: You know, we're all in on this team, and and I really do believe in these guys.
- 27:41SPEAKER_04: A thing about this team is we're very veteran-heavy.
- 27:45SPEAKER_04: We have a lot of seniors, we have a lot of guys that have been there before, been through downs and been through highs, you know.
- 27:51SPEAKER_04: So Kevin O'Banner had an unbelievable tournament last year with Oral Roberts, you know, Bryson Williams has been there.
- 27:58SPEAKER_04: Uh, Davion Warren has been there.
- 28:00SPEAKER_04: Adonis Arms had a great tournament too in in the one game he played last year.
- 28:04SPEAKER_04: So uh we and and then obviously Kevin McCullough and TJ have been there too.
- 28:09SPEAKER_04: So, you know, if if there is a team that can turn it around and get right mentally before all this stuff, it's this Texas tech team.
- 28:16SPEAKER_03: Yeah, age really helps in moments like these, whenever the spotlight is on them.
- 28:19SPEAKER_03: You know, it could be blinding whenever it's new to you.
- 28:21SPEAKER_03: So thank God we got some veterans on there that know how to deal with it.
- 28:24SPEAKER_03: I will say, uh, this is the only game I've missed all year long, was the Oklahoma State game.
- 28:28SPEAKER_03: I was in San Antonio doing wedding stuff, and I gotta say, I'm not that mad that I missed this game because I would have been pulling my hair out during that nine-minute stretch of not scoring at all.
- 28:38SPEAKER_04: It was so awful to watch.
- 28:40SPEAKER_04: The last nine and a half minutes of that game, I was like, please, somebody make a shot, move the ball, do something.
- 28:49SPEAKER_04: And credit to Oklahoma State.
- 28:51SPEAKER_04: They that was like I said on last week's pod, Oklahoma State was going to be motivated to win this game.
- 28:56SPEAKER_04: This was their last game of the season.
- 28:58SPEAKER_04: They wanted to win in front of their home fans.
- 29:01SPEAKER_04: It was a good crowd.
- 29:02SPEAKER_04: Uh, and and Oklahoma State always plays hard, they do this season.
- 29:07SPEAKER_04: So uh, you know, credit to them for hitting a big shot at the end there to to seal it.
- 29:12SPEAKER_04: But uh man, we we are just a much better team than them, and it's disappointing that the outcome was what it was.
- 29:18SPEAKER_04: Hey, you called it too.
- 29:19SPEAKER_03: You said you said you you said you don't see any way that we win that game, and you were right.
- 29:23SPEAKER_03: And and I don't know about any way.
- 29:25SPEAKER_04: I thought we should have won that game.
- 29:27SPEAKER_04: We were up by 10 with like 10 minutes left.
- 29:29SPEAKER_04: Like we should have won this game.
- 29:31SPEAKER_04: Uh, we still played great defensively, they only scored 52 points.
- 29:35SPEAKER_04: The problem was we scored 51.
- 29:38SPEAKER_04: So it was it, it's just it was a slow burn, and it just kept hurting.
- 29:43SPEAKER_04: Each miss shot kept hurting.
- 29:46SPEAKER_04: Uh and the only bucket we made in the last nine and a half minutes was a Davion Warren tipping uh after yet another miss shot.
- 29:54SPEAKER_04: So um again, I don't want to talk about it anymore.
- 29:58SPEAKER_04: Disappointing game.
- 29:59SPEAKER_04: We're kind of limping into the postseason here, but I will say I want I expect this coaching staff to get them right, and I expect Kevin McCullough to be back.
- 30:11SPEAKER_04: This is just me saying stuff.
- 30:13SPEAKER_04: I don't have any insider information or anything, but knowing Kev and sources say no, uh, knowing Kev and knowing TJ, they're gonna turn it on at the right time because that's the type of players they are.
- 30:24SPEAKER_04: They work through the low moments.
- 30:27SPEAKER_03: I'm with you, man.
- 30:28SPEAKER_03: And now's the time to do it.
- 30:29SPEAKER_03: I mean, this if there was ever a time to turn it on, it's you know, whatever every game matters or you go home.
- 30:34SPEAKER_03: So I'm looking forward to man.
- 30:35SPEAKER_03: I'm I'm I'm really ready for March Madness to get here.
- 30:37SPEAKER_03: You know, it's been a long season, a lot of ups and downs, but mostly, thankfully, a lot of ups, mostly ups.
- 30:43SPEAKER_04: So it's the most exciting time of the season, dude.
- 30:45SPEAKER_04: March Madness is my favorite event in sports, it just is.
- 30:49SPEAKER_03: It's the best season in all of sports.
- 30:51SPEAKER_04: Yeah, some people like the Olympics, some people like the Super Bowl.
- 30:54SPEAKER_04: I like March Madness.
- 30:55SPEAKER_04: March Madness is so great.
- 30:57SPEAKER_04: You can just go for like three straight days.
- 30:59SPEAKER_04: You have games on literally at every moment of the day.
- 31:03SPEAKER_04: It's fantastic.
- 31:04SPEAKER_04: I'm so excited.
- 31:04SPEAKER_04: I've downloaded my apps, I'm ready to get my bracket going.
- 31:08SPEAKER_04: Uh, we have a fun show planned for y'all with the Ramblin Raiders here on Selection Sunday.
- 31:13SPEAKER_04: So we are excited for March Madness.
- 31:16SPEAKER_04: Uh, and and it starts before that with the Big 12 tournament.
- 31:19SPEAKER_04: Uh, we are three seed.
- 31:21SPEAKER_04: We finished uh below Kansas and Baylor, and we are playing the sixth seed Iowa State.
- 31:26SPEAKER_04: Uh, that is gonna be Thursday at 8:30 p.m.
- 31:30SPEAKER_04: So late night game.
- 31:31SPEAKER_04: We're gonna be probably the last game played in Kansas City that day.
- 31:35SPEAKER_04: Um, and the winner of that is gonna go on to play the winner of Baylor in Oklahoma.
- 31:39SPEAKER_04: So we may have another shot at Baylor here if we can pull it out against Iowa State.
- 31:43SPEAKER_04: Uh, the good news is Iowa State's offense is not very good either.
- 31:48SPEAKER_04: So, you know, with our defensive play, uh, we beat him in Lubbock and we probably should have beat him in Ames earlier this season, but we were COVID-ridden.
- 31:56SPEAKER_04: We only had seven players available.
- 31:58SPEAKER_04: Uh, we played Iowa State pretty good throughout the year, though.
- 32:01SPEAKER_03: But don't you kind of worry about playing a team like Iowa State in the Big 12 tournament because they're gonna be more voted to win this game because you know they're they're on the outside looking in on the March Manners right now, correct?
- 32:12SPEAKER_04: Well, no, they're pretty much in, I think.
- 32:14SPEAKER_04: They're pretty much in.
- 32:15SPEAKER_04: They're kind of looking for seeding too at this point.
- 32:18SPEAKER_04: It's it's like a seven versus maybe a nine seed for Iowa State, kind of that sort of deal.
- 32:23SPEAKER_04: If they okay, cool, depending on their run in the in the Big 12 tournament.
- 32:27SPEAKER_03: That makes me feel a little better.
- 32:28SPEAKER_03: I figured the cutoff was after TCU in the Big 12, from what I've seen for the most part.
- 32:32SPEAKER_03: Um, but okay, so that makes me feel a little better.
- 32:34SPEAKER_03: I thought we were about to play a team that was kind of fighting for its life.
- 32:38SPEAKER_04: No, I think Iowa State's uh they they have a spot in.
- 32:41SPEAKER_04: Um I you know, I I but I'm not a bracketologist or anything, but I I would expect I would expect to have six teams from the Big 12 in the tournament, uh, with the obvious four and then Iowa State and TCU.
- 32:54SPEAKER_03: Rock on, yeah.
- 32:55SPEAKER_03: So obviously we when we we move past that.
- 32:57SPEAKER_03: You think we're locked in at a three seed if we beat Iowa State, no matter what happens after that?
- 33:01SPEAKER_04: Yeah, if we if because we're probably gonna go on to play Baylor if we beat Iowa State.
- 33:05SPEAKER_04: And if you lose to Baylor at this point in the season, it's not gonna knock you that much.
- 33:09SPEAKER_04: Um, we I do expect us to go down to a four seed if we lose to Iowa State.
- 33:14SPEAKER_04: So uh just be prepared for that.
- 33:16SPEAKER_04: Um, you know, I I but again, I don't think we're gonna lose to Iowa State.
- 33:21SPEAKER_04: I we've been historically bad in the Big 12 tournament.
- 33:24SPEAKER_04: Uh, I know Beard didn't really care all that much uh about winning Big 12 tournament games.
- 33:29SPEAKER_04: Mark Adams could be the same way.
- 33:31SPEAKER_04: Uh, but you know, and for me, I said it a couple weeks ago on the pod.
- 33:36SPEAKER_04: I I'd almost rather lose in the Big 12 tournament early to get some more rest and get our guys healthy before the actual tournament.
- 33:42SPEAKER_04: But uh, you know, if it's a difference between a three and a four seed, I'd obviously rather win uh and and maintain that three seed because that's you know an easier opponent and everything like that.
- 33:53SPEAKER_03: Yeah, so win this one and go home and rest.
- 33:56SPEAKER_04: Yeah, seriously.
- 33:57SPEAKER_04: That's fine if we lose the Baylor in the second round.
- 33:59SPEAKER_04: It's fine.
- 34:00SPEAKER_04: Get some rest.
- 34:00SPEAKER_04: McCullough get in the cryo chamber with that ankle.
- 34:04SPEAKER_04: TJ, go get, I don't know, just go get some rock massage or something for the back.
- 34:10SPEAKER_04: I don't know.
- 34:11SPEAKER_03: Do you not think Porter Mosier is gonna get the boys, the senior boys, going to you know, to see, hey, you know, we could still do it, you know, if we go go a little crazy.
- 34:20SPEAKER_04: Porter Mosier goes crazy on the sidelines, so he's gonna be motivated.
- 34:24SPEAKER_04: I don't know if his team's gonna be motivated, and and they have a toughie with Baylor to start off.
- 34:29SPEAKER_04: So uh, I don't know.
- 34:30SPEAKER_04: I don't know, but yeah, I mean this is this Big 12 tournament is for the Oklahomas of the world, it's for the Kansas States or the West Virginias that are clearly not in the tournament, but could potentially get that bid if they win their conference tournament because it's an auto bid.
- 34:44SPEAKER_04: So, yeah, look out for those types of teams because this is their last chance to get in to the NCAA tournament.
- 34:51SPEAKER_03: Absolutely.
- 34:51SPEAKER_03: So come on, boys, let's go, let's go top out the three uh three seed win there and grab some Kansas City burnt-ins and head home.
- 34:58SPEAKER_04: Yeah, no doubt.
- 34:59SPEAKER_04: So um exciting times for college basketball.
- 35:03SPEAKER_04: This is the best time of year for college basketball.
- 35:06SPEAKER_04: So uh tournament starts on Thursday and it goes through the weekend, and then we got selection Sunday on Sunday.
- 35:13SPEAKER_04: So excited for that.
- 35:14SPEAKER_04: Um, did you have anything else on basketball?
- 35:17SPEAKER_03: No, man.
- 35:18SPEAKER_03: I think I'm just looking forward to uh meeting up with the Rambling Raiders here at the end of the week and uh talking some selection Sunday.
- 35:24SPEAKER_04: Absolutely.
- 35:25SPEAKER_04: So uh, but we can, you know, the good thing about the Rambling Raiders is it's always fun to record with those guys, and it's always fun to look at Texas Tech football recruiting news, apparently, these days.
- 35:39SPEAKER_04: Uh since we last talked, Joey Maguire has accumulated the number two class in the nation in 2023, the number two recruiting class, not in the Big 12, not in the not in the power five, in the nation.
- 36:03SPEAKER_04: This is stupid.
- 36:05SPEAKER_04: Steven, do you don't you expect us for Texas Tech, though?
- 36:07SPEAKER_04: Aren't we a usual suspect?
- 36:09SPEAKER_04: I mean, come on, yeah, always in football recruiting.
- 36:11SPEAKER_04: We haven't had a bad football season in I don't know how long.
- 36:15SPEAKER_03: Not one.
- 36:15SPEAKER_03: No, it's truly incredible.
- 36:17SPEAKER_03: And I think it just keeps coming back.
- 36:19SPEAKER_03: You know, this is kind of one of those things where we sound a bit like a broken record, but uh this is what Texas Tech's been missing.
- 36:24SPEAKER_03: We needed a recruiter, we haven't gone for a recruiter in so long.
- 36:27SPEAKER_03: And look what happens whenever you hire a guy who makes recruiting a priority, and he knows how to recruit as well.
- 36:33SPEAKER_03: Like you could see him, you know, filling in the majority of his positions with the high schoolers, but also tape patching in critical positions with transfers, which is how it's supposed to be.
- 36:43SPEAKER_03: It's not let's look for every single transfer we can get.
- 36:46SPEAKER_03: It thank god and showing.
- 36:49SPEAKER_04: I feel like you're talking to somebody individually here.
- 36:52SPEAKER_03: I'm just trying to give our treasured listeners who are all tremendous a recap of my feelings towards a certain coach named Matt Wells.
- 37:02SPEAKER_04: Uh no, but I mean, we said this, we gave a recruiting update a few weeks ago on the pod as well.
- 37:08SPEAKER_04: Uh, and at that point, we were the number six class according to 247.
- 37:12SPEAKER_04: Since then, we have upgraded to the number two class, and that was just because 247 hadn't gotten around right to actually rating some of our commits.
- 37:20SPEAKER_04: So now all of them are rated, and we have nothing below a three-star right now.
- 37:25SPEAKER_04: We have, and and some of those guys even got upgraded from their three-star status to four-star status.
- 37:30SPEAKER_04: And so we now have four four-star recruits in this class currently, and we have nine three-star recruits coming in.
- 37:38SPEAKER_04: We have 13 total commits, which is I think the most in college football right now.
- 37:43SPEAKER_04: Listen, we're not gonna finish second in recruiting, we're not because eventually the other teams later in the game are gonna start catching up.
- 37:50SPEAKER_04: Guys are gonna get rated higher after their senior years.
- 37:53SPEAKER_04: It's just gonna happen.
- 37:55SPEAKER_04: But to have this lead right now, to be number one in the Big 12 and number two in the entire nation right now, just is a testament to Joey Maguire and the staff and the efforts that they have already put in for not just this coming year, but the following years in the future.
- 38:13SPEAKER_03: Absolutely, man.
- 38:13SPEAKER_03: I obviously number two isn't going to sit forever, and haters are hating.
- 38:18SPEAKER_03: You know, every time I say it's posted that Tech Tech's number two in the nation, you know, haters are coming out.
- 38:22SPEAKER_03: You know, obviously Longhorn fans and Aggie fans have something to say about it every time.
- 38:26SPEAKER_03: But uh, if we even finish top 25, man, I'm thrilled.
- 38:30SPEAKER_03: I'm very satisfied because especially once you, like you said, you start seeing uh other teams start filling in and they're and their players start getting the powerhouse bump, you know, because they either being sought after after these uh blue blood schools.
- 38:41SPEAKER_03: But it's no matter what, if it's if it's a top 25, I think that's a huge success because I think that's a area Texas Tech should be able to expect themselves to land pretty much every year, is in that zone.
- 38:51SPEAKER_03: So I'm glad that he's setting that tone right now, and he's setting that tone with you know at number two.
- 38:57SPEAKER_03: So no matter what, I'm very satisfied with the work he's doing for sure.
- 39:01SPEAKER_04: And you and you single out some of these players, and you know, we talked about it when uh they released their commitment and that they were going to Texas Tech, and they're kind of an unknown name.
- 39:10SPEAKER_04: Uh, a guy in particular I can single out is Calvin Simpson Hunt.
- 39:14SPEAKER_04: He was a guy from Waxahatchie that's coming in in the class of 2023.
- 39:18SPEAKER_04: Uh, complete no-name when he committed to tech.
- 39:20SPEAKER_04: He didn't have a lot of offers.
- 39:22SPEAKER_04: There was just uh Joey Maguire knew him and he had the connections through the high school football scene.
- 39:28SPEAKER_04: And now the guy's a four-star recruit.
- 39:30SPEAKER_04: So, you know, this is the type of stuff that Joey Maguire brings to a program.
- 39:35SPEAKER_04: Those high school connections, getting in early on certain players that maybe bigger programs aren't looking at right now, but will as you know it progresses.
- 39:45SPEAKER_04: And so if you get in on these guys early, you show them that you're committed to them even when other schools aren't looking at them.
- 39:51SPEAKER_04: I mean, that's big time.
- 39:52SPEAKER_04: And for Joey to get, I we've had three guys since the last recruiting, uh, whatever 247 does when they like update their recruiting.
- 40:02SPEAKER_04: We've had three guys upgraded to four stars.
- 40:04SPEAKER_04: I mean, that's ridiculous.
- 40:06SPEAKER_04: That's awesome.
- 40:07SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I think getting in early on these guys is is truly getting those hidden gyms, you know, and quotation marks.
- 40:12SPEAKER_03: You know, wherever we have bad classes, you're like, oh, uh, it's probably because we have hidden gyms who aren't rated right.
- 40:17SPEAKER_03: But that just it really shows the trust and rapport that uh uh Coach Joey Maguire has with these high school coaches because you know you can really tell that the high school coaches view Joe Maguire as one of them.
- 40:27SPEAKER_03: So they're like, No, you need to come talk, talk to this young man that's not being talked to yet, because this kid is the real deal, and that's why we hired him.
- 40:33SPEAKER_03: You know, I think that's what he he brought into the interview.
- 40:35SPEAKER_03: And I'm glad to see that we're doing that.
- 40:37SPEAKER_03: It's what we needed at Texas Tech because we need to get ahead of these other programs.
- 40:41SPEAKER_03: Because if we can get if we can get our foot in the door, it could be for these other powerhouses.
- 40:45SPEAKER_03: You can get the kid to start falling in love with Texas Tech and actually start picturing himself there instead of the typical powerhouse.
- 40:50SPEAKER_03: So I love what he's bringing to the program.
- 40:52SPEAKER_03: It's just it's truly new excitement and new juice, and these recruits are showing that.
- 40:58SPEAKER_04: Yeah, absolutely.
- 40:59SPEAKER_04: So um had a couple more things on recruiting.
- 41:02SPEAKER_04: Um, the 2022 class, mostly trench guys and defense.
- 41:07SPEAKER_04: So a lot of linemen, uh, a lot of defensive uh players, linebackers, uh, you know, defensive backs, sort of thing.
- 41:14SPEAKER_04: This 2023 class is really positionally diverse.
- 41:18SPEAKER_04: I mean, we have a quarterback, we have a couple guys that are, you know, described as athletes that could be a receiver, that could be a running back, they could play defensive back if they wanted to.
- 41:28SPEAKER_04: And then we're also still getting some linemen, we're getting uh we're getting in on some linebackers, all sorts of stuff.
- 41:35SPEAKER_04: So that's good to see too.
- 41:36SPEAKER_04: Uh, just getting ready for the future and and keeping a balanced team.
- 41:41SPEAKER_04: Uh, you know, Joey obviously recognized what this team needed, and that was some defense and that was some line play immediately.
- 41:48SPEAKER_04: Uh, and so I'm glad he's doing that right now.
- 41:50SPEAKER_04: He's gotten some great transfers uh coming in that are gonna start playing next year.
- 41:54SPEAKER_04: Uh, but but the 23 2023 class is really spread out in terms of positions.
- 42:01SPEAKER_03: Yeah, hashtag it starts with the trenches, and there's big news today, man, with the transfer in uh Cole Spencer from Western Kentucky.
- 42:08SPEAKER_03: So that obviously that Hamby and uh uh Kitley connection really proved true there.
- 42:12SPEAKER_03: And uh according to Max Olson, a guy I really respect in college football, uh, with the athletic, he's he's ranked number seven in their transfer ranks.
- 42:19SPEAKER_03: So that's that's a huge get, especially at a position where we need it so desperately to get one of the very best you can.
- 42:25SPEAKER_03: That's just phenomenal stuff.
- 42:27SPEAKER_04: Yeah, no, this guy was uh this guy in Cole Spencer was an all-first team conference USA player last year.
- 42:33SPEAKER_04: He allowed one sack last season.
- 42:36SPEAKER_04: And I think the most important thing is he's familiar with Kitley's offense and and Coach Hamby on the O-line.
- 42:42SPEAKER_04: So clearly, you know, they did something right with this kid uh last season at Western Kentucky.
- 42:47SPEAKER_04: And I think he's gonna be vying in for that left tackle spot starting uh at Texas Tech next season.
- 42:53SPEAKER_04: So look for him.
- 42:54SPEAKER_04: Uh, he's getting in before spring ball, so that's great.
- 42:57SPEAKER_04: Uh, and he's he's gonna be immediately eligible.
- 43:00SPEAKER_04: And uh, you know, that just adds to it.
- 43:02SPEAKER_04: We've had a couple other offensive line transfers coming in to get that experience uh to potentially play immediately.
- 43:08SPEAKER_04: And uh, I'm just excited for all these guys.
- 43:10SPEAKER_03: Me too, man.
- 43:11SPEAKER_03: But please protect the quarterback.
- 43:13SPEAKER_03: That's just been a curse on the Texas Tech football program throughout several coaching administrations now that our quarterbacks always get hurt, so please protect them.
- 43:21SPEAKER_03: That's your job.
- 43:22SPEAKER_03: And a one sack, allowing one sack makes you feel good about protecting those poor boys' bones.
- 43:27SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and and with Kidley's offense, he likes to throw the ball.
- 43:30SPEAKER_04: You need some time for Shuck or Smith or whoever's gonna be playing next season, whoever's gonna be the starter, just protect him, just give him some time and we can make it happen.
- 43:40SPEAKER_04: Uh, imagine Patrick Mahomes with some time.
- 43:42SPEAKER_04: I'm not saying Shuck or Smith is gonna be Patrick Mahomes, but I'm saying just imagine if Patrick Mahomes had some time when he played at Texas Tech, he was already that good, he would have been even better.
- 43:53SPEAKER_03: Yeah, you don't even have to go back that far.
- 43:55SPEAKER_03: I mean, Tyler Shuck was having a solid season before he got uh critically injured in the UT game.
- 43:59SPEAKER_03: You know, who knows?
- 44:00SPEAKER_03: What the season would have looked like, um, but I mean, obviously, we're pretty happy it got it kind of went the way it did because we got Joey McGuire now.
- 44:06SPEAKER_03: But even still, you know, Tyler could have had a great season this past season if he had he stayed healthy.
- 44:10SPEAKER_03: So it's just it's exciting, man, because we're we're finally entering some serious uh expectations of what this can be.
- 44:17SPEAKER_03: We're finally getting a good sense of what to expect out of this football team.
- 44:20SPEAKER_03: And I love it, you know, and it's because the fall's really not that far away.
- 44:23SPEAKER_03: Once basketball season ends and we're focused on baseball, the next thing we're talking about is football.
- 44:27SPEAKER_03: So it's just it's just good good times all around right now.
- 44:30SPEAKER_04: No doubt spring ball right around the corner.
- 44:32SPEAKER_04: Then you get a little summer off and it's back and rolling again.
- 44:35SPEAKER_04: Football season, but uh it is not football season right now, it's basketball and baseball season, and baseball after a rocky start and a uh one of two record in uh the opening season tournament.
- 44:47SPEAKER_04: We are currently on a nine-game win streak.
- 44:50SPEAKER_04: Uh, yes, a lot of that is wins against Kent State and Merrimack, but we also beat Dallas Baptist twice, one time in Lubbock and one time in Dallas, and that is massive because Dallas Baptist is a good team.
- 45:03SPEAKER_03: And and Steve and I both totally knew where Merrimack was.
- 45:06SPEAKER_03: We did not have to look it up before this podcast.
- 45:08SPEAKER_03: Massachusetts.
- 45:10SPEAKER_03: I always knew it.
- 45:11SPEAKER_03: Always knew that the Merrimack, Merrimack, Merrimacks were from Massachusetts, Massachusetts.
- 45:16SPEAKER_03: So great wins.
- 45:18SPEAKER_03: Yeah, man, that makes nine in a row.
- 45:20SPEAKER_03: That's that's great.
- 45:20SPEAKER_03: That's it's it's hard to do in baseball, uh, no matter what what you're going up against, because it's just a random sport like that.
- 45:25SPEAKER_03: We are 10 and 2.
- 45:27SPEAKER_03: We are second in the Big 12 in total overall record, one game behind the Longhorns, who are number one in the nation.
- 45:33SPEAKER_03: Last I checked.
- 45:34SPEAKER_03: So, you know, we're not in a bad spot.
- 45:36SPEAKER_03: I mean, our rankings doesn't really uh national rankings isn't really reflecting that right now.
- 45:39SPEAKER_03: We're in the 20s, but uh depending on where you look, but um it's just we're getting we're we're getting things on track.
- 45:44SPEAKER_03: You know, we started out in a gauntlet, it happens, we lost to good teams, it's not a problem.
- 45:49SPEAKER_03: And we we have our next test up against the national champions in Mississippi State, who appear to be having a rockier season than us.
- 45:56SPEAKER_04: Yeah, Mississippi State hadn't started off very well.
- 45:59SPEAKER_04: I believe they're six and four.
- 46:00SPEAKER_04: Uh, they've lost a couple series, I think one to two lane and one to uh uh I can't remember the other one right now, but uh it hasn't been it hasn't been very good look for for the defending national champs, like you said.
- 46:12SPEAKER_03: Uh the team they have dropped a series to as well is Long Beach State.
- 46:17SPEAKER_03: That's right, Long Beach State, yikes.
- 46:19SPEAKER_03: And pretty badly.
- 46:21SPEAKER_03: One of one of the drops was a three to thirteen loss.
- 46:25SPEAKER_03: So it's uh the Mississippi State Bulldogs look like they're in a bit of a rebuilding period after their national championship game, um, which we'll take.
- 46:32SPEAKER_03: And that's a great win to grab once we meet them in Mississippi at a quotation marks neutral sight game.
- 46:39SPEAKER_04: Yeah, go to Mississippi for a neutral site game against Mississippi State.
- 46:42SPEAKER_04: We all want to do that, but uh no, I wish I could go to this game.
- 46:46SPEAKER_04: It's in Biloxi, that's like a two-hour drive for me.
- 46:48SPEAKER_04: But again, it's in the middle of the week, not helping me out much there.
- 46:51SPEAKER_04: But uh yeah, like you said, just getting that recognition, you know, going up against the defending national champs and and hopefully getting a couple wins here in this two-game series would be big time for our program and momentum uh for some of these guys.
- 47:05SPEAKER_04: But we said this at the very beginning of the season, it's gonna take some time for this team, and you know, playing these games against, you know, not the best opponents is getting them confidence, getting the pitchers that haven't really uh seen much playing time before this season, getting uh guys used to hitting again.
- 47:21SPEAKER_04: I mean, playing playing baseball, you know, it's been a long offseason, so uh it's good to see them uh starting to get some more hits.
- 47:28SPEAKER_04: You know, Parker Kelly was awesome in the Merrimack game, so is Owen Washburn.
- 47:33SPEAKER_04: He's been great.
- 47:33SPEAKER_04: Uh, and then you know, obviously Jace Young.
- 47:36SPEAKER_04: He's I think he's leading the Big 12 in walks right now just because no one wants to pitch to him, which is fair.
- 47:41SPEAKER_04: I mean, I wouldn't want to either.
- 47:43SPEAKER_04: Good tactic, good tactic.
- 47:44SPEAKER_04: I mean, you get on base, man.
- 47:46SPEAKER_04: You get on base.
- 47:47SPEAKER_04: Yeah, um, but no, it's been it's been good seeing uh the recent success for this baseball team.
- 47:53SPEAKER_04: Uh big games against Mississippi State, and then we go play a three-game series on the road at Rice.
- 47:58SPEAKER_04: And Rice isn't a you know, that's nothing to you know snuff at.
- 48:02SPEAKER_04: Pretty good team in Rice.
- 48:04SPEAKER_04: So uh, you know, hopefully we can keep this win streak going and uh you know keep taking it in.
- 48:08SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's not easy from here.
- 48:10SPEAKER_03: I mean, I think we are we're we're past our easy series if you consider them that between Kent State and America uh team we totally knew what where they were.
- 48:17SPEAKER_03: Um, because after Rice, you know we got New Mexico, which is kind of butted into a bit of a rivalry, and we got Iowa, Cal Baptist before we head into the conference play.
- 48:24SPEAKER_03: So easy time's over.
- 48:25SPEAKER_03: I hope our guys had gathered their confidence while they could because it's not easy from here.
- 48:29SPEAKER_03: And the two players you actually actually mentioned that are playing well recently got uh recognized by the Big 12 and weekly award.
- 48:35SPEAKER_03: So uh at least our our guys are starting to step up.
- 48:38SPEAKER_03: So this is you know, we start looking for guys that are going to be leading the team, and I think we're starting to see them.
- 48:43SPEAKER_03: So it's but the rubber's about to beat the road, and then like you said, beating the beating the defending national champions on quote unquote neutral side ground would be a great way to get this season really off, like really off the ground.
- 48:53SPEAKER_04: Yeah, absolutely.
- 48:54SPEAKER_04: Um that was Owen Washburn was named newcomer of the week, and Parker Kelly was player of the week in the Big 12.
- 49:00SPEAKER_04: So uh good to get those uh awards out early because you know Texas Tech basketball was snubbed a bit, so it's good to see that.
- 49:09SPEAKER_04: But um, yeah, you know, Texas Tech Baseball, always fun.
- 49:12SPEAKER_04: Um, do you have anything else?
- 49:15SPEAKER_03: No, I I think I think that pretty much wraps up this this podcast, another kind of shorter one, the normal, I think.
- 49:22SPEAKER_03: But uh, I think the only other dumb conversation you and I had before the podcast starts, we have about a dozen completely irrelevant or pretty much irrelevant conversations with these before these pods start.
- 49:32SPEAKER_03: But we had a bit of a disagreement.
- 49:34SPEAKER_03: Like whenever we whenever I was looking at our new coaching hires on our football staff, I said I have a bit of an issue whenever they keep their uh their alma mater in their bio.
- 49:44SPEAKER_03: Because the reason why is one of our one of our new uh coaches has OU alum in the bio, one of our rivals.
- 49:53SPEAKER_03: It's like I I just I just kind of feel like wherever you're you know loyal and pro and in and dedicating your talents to a program, you you do, I don't think you want to include any sort of other interests that may be there.
- 50:06SPEAKER_03: I know I'm probably reading too much into it, but it's just like come on, you you gotta really show where your loyalties lie and just kind of cut that out.
- 50:12SPEAKER_03: You know, you can still be proud of the you know what what you did there, but in your bio and stuff, just keep it professional, in my opinion.
- 50:19SPEAKER_04: Look, this doesn't matter at all to me.
- 50:21SPEAKER_04: I don't care.
- 50:21SPEAKER_04: Uh I don't care.
- 50:22SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I don't care if a guy has where he went to school in his bio.
- 50:26SPEAKER_04: Um, these coaches, when they get into the game, are professionals.
- 50:31SPEAKER_04: These guys uh are 100% for the team they are coaching.
- 50:36SPEAKER_04: Uh, and there's been outliers here or there, I guess.
- 50:39SPEAKER_04: If you're looking in terms of, I don't know, I guess uh guys that maybe don't want to beat their own.
- 50:44SPEAKER_04: And this kind of it's when you go into coaching, and neither of us are in coaching, but I can imagine if you do, you have to put that stuff to the side, you know, you really do, um, in terms of who you're who you're going for, who you're putting 100% of your time and effort into.
- 51:01SPEAKER_04: I'm sure these coaches, they all they come from all around.
- 51:05SPEAKER_04: I mean, Joey McCuire's not a tech alum, but he's going 100% for tech.
- 51:09SPEAKER_04: Uh, you know, he we have multiple coaches from different walks of life that are coming into Texas Tech.
- 51:15SPEAKER_04: Uh, and we do have those that are familiar faces.
- 51:18SPEAKER_04: Stephen Hamby played here, you know, Zach Kitley was a grad assistant here.
- 51:21SPEAKER_04: Uh, and obviously the Kitley name is, you know, uh fantastic in Lubbock, Texas.
- 51:26SPEAKER_04: But um, you know, when you get outsiders, they have really bought into the culture.
- 51:32SPEAKER_04: And I think that's a good thing that happens at Texas Tech, even with the last staff, you know, getting Coach Cheetah and those guys who probably didn't know a thing about Lubbock, Texas before they took the job and really bought into it and loved it and and recruited as hard as they could and and really gave a crap.
- 51:47SPEAKER_04: Matt Wells excluded a little bit.
- 51:50SPEAKER_04: Uh, but you know, those those position coaches really loved it here.
- 51:53SPEAKER_04: Um, and I think we have a nice way of doing that.
- 51:56SPEAKER_04: And uh, this staff definitely has 100% bought into West Texas and love it.
- 52:02SPEAKER_03: I I just think it's a little unprofessional because I it's those are the competition that you are including in your bio that you're still proud to be connected to.
- 52:09SPEAKER_03: And like, especially, especially a team like OU.
- 52:12SPEAKER_03: You know, I just I think it's a little unprofessional.
- 52:14SPEAKER_03: I think you should just be like, I am Texas Tex linebacker coach.
- 52:16SPEAKER_03: If you go on their LinkedIn, you'll see I went to OEU.
- 52:18SPEAKER_03: Or, you know, if you talk to me personally, I'll tell you I played at OU.
- 52:20SPEAKER_03: And I'm I'm proud of that, but that's not what I am now.
- 52:24SPEAKER_03: It has no bearing on what's happening right now.
- 52:26SPEAKER_03: So that's all I'm saying.
- 52:27SPEAKER_03: I just want you full send, even you know, even all with the public face on your team.
- 52:32SPEAKER_03: That's it.
- 52:32SPEAKER_03: I'm way overthinking it, but that's just the case.
- 52:35SPEAKER_03: Unless you're the alumni of the team, and that's a great thing to include, obviously.
- 52:38SPEAKER_03: You why wouldn't you?
- 52:39SPEAKER_03: But if you're not, I just think just leave it at the door.
- 52:42SPEAKER_04: To each their own, it doesn't bother me one bit, but uh, I I kind of get what you're saying.
- 52:47SPEAKER_04: Um, Coach K.
- 52:49SPEAKER_04: Let us know, treasure listeners.
- 52:51SPEAKER_04: What about Coach K losing his final game in the uh at Cameron indoor?
- 52:56SPEAKER_04: That was freaking hilarious.
- 52:57SPEAKER_04: That is pretty funny.
- 52:58SPEAKER_03: I mean, the guy's a legend, we'll always be a legend and all that, but people people freaking love him, or either love him or you hate him.
- 53:04SPEAKER_03: But it was kind of funny to watch this game that was hyped up beyond belief, which like I feel like every dude North Carolina game is, no matter if one of them sucks.
- 53:12SPEAKER_03: Um, it's just funny to see the very last one in it in kind of an embarrassing fashion.
- 53:16SPEAKER_04: Yeah, to not a very good North Carolina team, and they got smoked like pretty good.
- 53:22SPEAKER_04: They I think they I mean it was tight for the majority of the game, but I think North Carolina just pulled it away, and it's so funny to see him go to the crowd and basically just crap on his players saying, You deserved better for my final game.
- 53:37SPEAKER_04: And you know, this is a guy, this is a guy, Coach G who is just full of himself.
- 53:43SPEAKER_04: I mean, the guy is having a farewell tour.
- 53:46SPEAKER_04: This is a dude who announced prior to the season, this is going to be my last year.
- 53:52SPEAKER_04: Give me gifts, give me praise.
- 53:54SPEAKER_04: I want this season about me.
- 53:56SPEAKER_04: He's not making it about his players, he's making it about him.
- 53:58SPEAKER_04: So it's very easy to hate him, and it's very satisfying to see him lose his final game there against the bitter rival of North Carolina that is just not that good.
- 54:10SPEAKER_03: I'm with you, man.
- 54:11SPEAKER_03: This whole thing is scream self-absorbed, and ESBN's been obviously paying into it because it sells.
- 54:16SPEAKER_03: Um, but like, like, dude, the best coaches make it about the players, like our own Mark Adams, because obviously, you think Mark Adams cares if he won coach of the year?
- 54:24SPEAKER_03: No, no, and anytime we win, he always gives all the credit to the two the players and the fans.
- 54:27SPEAKER_03: He does it's never about anytime anyone trying to give some tries to give him praise, he just brushes it off and points it somewhere else.
- 54:34SPEAKER_03: I do not get that vibe from the quote unquote goats of college basketball.
- 54:38SPEAKER_03: You know, I just you would expect better from a guy that's been in it as long as he has, but I I I do not pity him blowing the what's probably gonna be remembered as it's gonna be it's gonna be a stamp on his career.
- 54:49SPEAKER_03: Like everyone's gonna be like, remember we blew the last game against North Carolina at home, which is kind of funny.
- 54:54SPEAKER_04: The funny part is if Duke doesn't win at all, this that's what they're gonna remember.
- 54:58SPEAKER_04: Is he's K blew his final game at Cameron indoor with with seats that cost several thousand dollars for all these Duke fans to go in and just watch them get smoked by their bitter rival.
- 55:12SPEAKER_04: Pretty funny.
- 55:13SPEAKER_04: Wanted to mention it.
- 55:14SPEAKER_04: I'm not a big coach K guy, as you can tell.
- 55:17SPEAKER_03: Well, it's it's okay for those Duke fans.
- 55:19SPEAKER_03: I think the Lakers are gonna have a pretty good year, too.
- 55:21SPEAKER_04: So that's true, and then you know, the Cowboys are gonna be there.
- 55:24SPEAKER_04: Uh you know, they'll they'll get there eventually.
- 55:27SPEAKER_04: They may not be very good, but they're gonna be there for you to root for them because you know you're a Duke, a Lakers, and a Cowboy fan.
- 55:33SPEAKER_03: Oh, there's unfortunately the MLB lockout's still happening because their Yankees are ready to really make a run of this.
- 55:38SPEAKER_04: They were, they were really ready.
- 55:39SPEAKER_04: So that you know, when the MLB lockout eventually ends, they they got that going forward.
- 55:44SPEAKER_03: It's still, I mean, they also have the fall.
- 55:45SPEAKER_03: I mean, Alabama.
- 55:47SPEAKER_03: I mean, I think I think it's just you know, Nick Saban revenge year.
- 55:49SPEAKER_03: So it's true.
- 55:51SPEAKER_04: Nick Saban revenge year.
- 55:55SPEAKER_03: There's no way Nick Saban doesn't win it all this year, but yeah, he's gonna win.
- 55:59SPEAKER_04: That's how college football works.
- 56:01SPEAKER_04: Yeah, so Saban's gotta win it every couple years.
- 56:04SPEAKER_03: Well, Kirby got this one, but this I'm gonna freaking kill him.
- 56:09SPEAKER_03: There's no freaking way I'm losing.
- 56:12SPEAKER_04: He's gonna let Georgia win in the SEC championship, and then he's gonna let that he's gonna play Georgia in the final and just destroy them by 50.
- 56:22SPEAKER_04: Oh, that was a stupid segment.
- 56:24SPEAKER_04: Anyway, it was.
- 56:25SPEAKER_04: It was.
- 56:26SPEAKER_04: Um, okay, so we do songs of the week every week uh here on the talk and tech bot, and we really enjoyed, and we are gonna give you a song of the week, but I did also want to kind of switch it up a little bit, give a little recommendation for TV, movies, whatever you've been watching lately, give it to the people.
- 56:46SPEAKER_04: What are you recommending uh other than songs this week?
- 56:49SPEAKER_03: You know, other than recommending all the great pods of of Guns Up Nation and beyond of the text-tech content world, um, I gotta say that my favorite podcast is not sports related, and I just think that more people should give us a listen.
- 57:03SPEAKER_03: It's uh I'm really into history, it's called hardcore history.
- 57:06SPEAKER_03: The the episodes are like three, four hours long.
- 57:08SPEAKER_03: I love it.
- 57:09SPEAKER_03: I if you're if you're a fan of history at all, I think you'd love this.
- 57:12SPEAKER_03: So um, if you're if you've been living under a rock and don't know about hardcore history, I just don't watch enough TV.
- 57:17SPEAKER_03: I don't want I'm not saying that like as a pretentious guy at all or anything like that.
- 57:20SPEAKER_03: I just I don't sit there and watch shows uh long enough, but I I had to go with the podcast hardcore history by Dan Carlin.
- 57:26SPEAKER_03: I don't think you'd regret it.
- 57:27SPEAKER_03: It's it's the best podcast on the market.
- 57:29SPEAKER_03: It's definitely not this podcast.
- 57:30SPEAKER_03: This is not the best podcast on the market.
- 57:33SPEAKER_04: We could compete with Dan.
- 57:34SPEAKER_04: We'll get Dan on the pod here soon.
- 57:36SPEAKER_04: Yeah, Dan.
- 57:37SPEAKER_04: Well, what do you think about the uh what we think about Kevin McCullough?
- 57:41SPEAKER_04: Is he gonna be healthy in time?
- 57:44SPEAKER_04: Oh well, um, whenever you could whatever you do the human experience and and I thought you were I thought you were just about to recommend the dinosaur podcast that you love so much.
- 57:54SPEAKER_04: I thought 100% you were going for it.
- 57:56SPEAKER_03: We'll save that for another day.
- 57:57SPEAKER_03: That's another good history podcast, but I can't just you know unload all my options on the people here.
- 58:02SPEAKER_04: That's fair, that's fair.
- 58:03SPEAKER_04: Okay, you're gonna hate my choice, and I think the majority of people are gonna hate my choice.
- 58:08SPEAKER_04: Um listen, this is one of my favorite television shows of all time, and I'm currently in a rewatch of it.
- 58:15SPEAKER_04: Um and it's taken me through the entire journey that I went through the first time I watched it, and that is and don't hate me for this, is lost.
- 58:25SPEAKER_03: You you've already said lost on a patent.
- 58:28SPEAKER_04: I haven't done it.
- 58:28SPEAKER_04: I haven't done it.
- 58:29SPEAKER_04: I haven't.
- 58:31SPEAKER_03: I guess I just feel like knowing you, you brought you brought it up before because it's you live for this.
- 58:36SPEAKER_04: Listen, I I watched Lost for the first time, freshman year of college.
- 58:40SPEAKER_04: So it wasn't even it was when it was on Netflix, so I just binged it.
- 58:44SPEAKER_04: I loved it.
- 58:45SPEAKER_04: I don't know, I don't understand the hate it got.
- 58:47SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I guess the later seasons were a little unsatisfying for some people.
- 58:53SPEAKER_04: I enjoy the journey when I watch television shows.
- 58:56SPEAKER_04: I'm currently watching it right now, and I couldn't be more invested in it.
- 59:00SPEAKER_04: I look forward to watching more episodes as I get home, and it's just it gets so much undeserved flack.
- 59:07SPEAKER_04: I love Lost.
- 59:09SPEAKER_03: You have to be the only person post-2010 that still watches this show.
- 59:13SPEAKER_04: I don't care, I'll watch it till the day I die, dude.
- 59:18SPEAKER_03: All right, y'all.
- 59:19SPEAKER_03: Well, that's uh you got one good, actually good recommendation and one and then one history podcast.
- 59:25SPEAKER_03: All right, polar bear show.
- 59:27SPEAKER_03: Got it.
- 59:27SPEAKER_04: Smoke monster polar bears were in it for like two episodes and smoke monster.
- 59:32SPEAKER_03: Oh no.
- 59:32SPEAKER_04: Again, I um I'm not going in it right now because I could do an hour travel.
- 59:37SPEAKER_04: I could do an hour, it had to change to make the series longer.
- 59:41SPEAKER_03: It was they couldn't just end it, you know, and on a good one.
- 59:44SPEAKER_03: They had to they had to drag it.
- 59:46SPEAKER_04: NEC made them go longer because you know why?
- 59:49SPEAKER_04: Because it was so successful.
- 59:51SPEAKER_04: You know, good shows know when to stop.
- 59:53SPEAKER_03: Breaking bad though, they know what they knew when to end it.
- 59:56SPEAKER_03: It was getting a little long.
- 59:57SPEAKER_04: They were handed bundles of cat.
- 1:00:00SPEAKER_04: I'm not doing it anymore.
- 1:00:01SPEAKER_04: I could go an hour on it.
- 1:00:02SPEAKER_04: Um, song of the week, go ahead.
- 1:00:05SPEAKER_03: All right.
- 1:00:05SPEAKER_03: So my song of the week is it's it's an Americana slash country uh country music artist.
- 1:00:10SPEAKER_03: He's a bit of an uh you know alternative zone.
- 1:00:13SPEAKER_03: He's not popular, he's he's not really in the mainstream.
- 1:00:16SPEAKER_03: He's Pony Bradshaw and his song 10 by 10.
- 1:00:20SPEAKER_03: This dude has got a pure voice, and he can write a song like it like the best of them.
- 1:00:25SPEAKER_03: And I just I just think he's got a good feature ahead of him in the industry because man, if you listen to him, his voice is just it's it's hey, he's got it.
- 1:00:32SPEAKER_03: He's got that it factor with the voice, and it's a production song of his song, just match it.
- 1:00:37SPEAKER_03: So 10 by 10, Pony Bradshaw.
- 1:00:55SPEAKER_04: That's a great choice.
- 1:00:56SPEAKER_04: That's an awesome song.
- 1:00:57SPEAKER_04: Uh, I love that one.
- 1:00:58SPEAKER_04: It's a it's a great like late night drinking song.
- 1:01:01SPEAKER_04: You just throw it on there, and then it's just it's it's I can't really explain it.
- 1:01:06SPEAKER_04: It's a really, really good song, though, but it's so different.
- 1:01:08SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's kind of haunting.
- 1:01:10SPEAKER_03: You know, you gotta listen to it alone.
- 1:01:11SPEAKER_03: You know, it's it's not really one you throw on the ox, but it's just kind of more you have your earbuds in.
- 1:01:16SPEAKER_03: It's a great song, like you said, a glass of whiskey in your hand.
- 1:01:18SPEAKER_03: I don't think you could paint it better.
- 1:01:20SPEAKER_04: Yeah, no doubt.
- 1:01:21SPEAKER_04: Um, that's a good choice.
- 1:01:22SPEAKER_04: Uh, my song of the week um is you know a pretty a pretty well-beloved song, uh classic 2000s hip-hop uh rap genre.
- 1:01:32SPEAKER_04: Uh my song of the week is gonna be Heartless by Kanye West.
- 1:01:36SPEAKER_04: Uh, because watching watching the last 10 minutes of that Oklahoma State game, I felt like my heart was getting ripped out and I was heartless.
- 1:01:43SPEAKER_04: So uh it was, yeah, I I love this song.
- 1:01:46SPEAKER_04: First, first off, you know, uh Kanye, old Kanye, there's really not a lot that beats it for me.
- 1:01:52SPEAKER_04: Um, and this one, you know, is just one of those off of uh one of his early albums that I just really love still to this day.
- 1:01:59SPEAKER_04: So Heartless Kanye West.
- 1:02:07SPEAKER_05: So we're far along this road we love the soul to a woman's song.
- 1:02:14SPEAKER_03: Taking us back to like the top 50 of the 2000s, man.
- 1:02:18SPEAKER_03: That was like peak Kanye West time.
- 1:02:20SPEAKER_03: Good pick, man.
- 1:02:20SPEAKER_03: I I I hear the the chorus in my head right now.
- 1:02:23SPEAKER_03: So, and I don't even listen to rap.
- 1:02:24SPEAKER_03: That's just how big that song was.
- 1:02:25SPEAKER_03: So good throwback, dude.
- 1:02:27SPEAKER_04: Yeah, absolutely.
- 1:02:29SPEAKER_04: But I think that is gonna do it.
- 1:02:31SPEAKER_04: We have talked y'all's year off long enough.
