- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Monday, it's the 22nd of
- 0:16September, and I'm so glad you have tapped on play and invited
- 0:20me into your day, your evening, your morning, wherever you are,
- 0:23wherever this finds you. Great to have your company as we
- 0:27continue reading through the book of Acts.
- 0:29This is our last full week reading through Acts and then
- 0:33the last couple of chapters we'll finish off next week
- 0:35before we dive into the next book, Romans.
- 0:39But before we get there, we are entering into this final phase
- 0:44of the book of Acts, which has taken us on a long journey,
- 0:47friends, hasn't it? It started off with Jesus
- 0:50ascending from his disciples, went through the Holy Spirit
- 0:53coming and the church beginning, and then this incredible man by
- 0:56the name of Paul going around preaching, building up these
- 0:59churches and now realising that his mission is to Jerusalem and
- 1:04then to Rome. And it's from Rome that this
- 1:08message will spread across the known world.
- 1:12So after building up churches around that part of the world,
- 1:15he is now entering the time where he will now be speaking
- 1:18before the Jewish leaders, the Gentiles and the Roman
- 1:21authorities to start to spread the word there.
- 1:25So fantastic. Let's dive in and enjoy this
- 1:29last phase of the book of Acts as we read today, Acts Chapter
- 1:3323. Gazing intently at the high
- 1:46council, Paul began Brothers, I have always lived before God
- 1:52with a clear conscience instantly and a nice The high
- 1:56priest commanded those close to Paul to slap him on the mouth.
- 1:59But Paul said to him, God will slap you, you corrupt hypocrite.
- 2:03What kind of a judge are you to break the law yourself by
- 2:06ordering me struck like that though standing near, Paul said
- 2:10to him, Do you dare to insult God's high priest?
- 2:15I'm sorry brothers, I didn't realise he was the high priest,
- 2:18Paul replied, For the scriptures say you must not speak evil of
- 2:23any of your rulers. Paul realised that some members
- 2:26of the high council were Sadducees and some were
- 2:29Pharisees. So he shouted, Brothers, I'm a
- 2:33Pharisee, as were my ancestors, and I am on trial because my
- 2:38hope is in the resurrection of the dead.
- 2:41This divided the council, the Pharisees against the Sadducees,
- 2:45for the Sadducees say there is no resurrection or angels or
- 2:49spirits, but the Pharisees believe in all of these.
- 2:52So there was a great uproar. Some of the teachers of
- 2:55religious law who were Pharisees jumped up and began to argue
- 2:59forcefully. We see nothing wrong with him,
- 3:02they shouted. Perhaps a spirit or an Angel
- 3:04spoke to him. As the conflict grew more
- 3:07violent, the commander was afraid they would tear Paul
- 3:11apart, so he ordered his soldiers to go and rescue him by
- 3:14force and take him back to the fortress.
- 3:18That night the Lord appeared to Paul and said, Be encouraged,
- 3:21Paul, just as you have been a witness to me here in Jerusalem,
- 3:26you must preach the good news in Rome as well.
- 3:30The next morning a group of Jews got together and bound
- 3:33themselves with an oath not to eat or drink until they had
- 3:37killed Paul. There were more than 40 of them
- 3:40in the conspiracy. They went to the leading priests
- 3:43and elders and told them We have bound ourselves with an oath to
- 3:47eat nothing until we have killed Paul.
- 3:51So you and the high council should ask the commander to
- 3:53bring Paul back to the council again.
- 3:56Pretend you want to examine his case more fully.
- 3:59We will kill him on the way. But Paul's nephew, his sister's
- 4:03son, heard of their plan and went to the fortress and told
- 4:06Paul. Paul called for one of the Roman
- 4:08officers and said, Take this young man to the commander.
- 4:12He has something important to tell him.
- 4:14So the officer did, explaining Paul, the prisoner called me
- 4:18over and asked me to bring this young man to you because he has
- 4:22something to tell you. The commander took his hand, led
- 4:26him aside and asked. What is it you want to tell me?
- 4:31Paul's nephew told him. Some Jews are going to ask you
- 4:34to bring Paul before the High Council tomorrow, pretending
- 4:37they want to get some more information.
- 4:39But but don't do it. There are more than 40 men
- 4:42hiding along the way, ready to ambush him.
- 4:45They have vowed not to eat or drink anything until they've
- 4:47killed him. They are ready now, just waiting
- 4:50for your consent. Don't let anyone know you have
- 4:54told me this, the commander warned the young man.
- 4:58Then the commander called two of his officers and ordered.
- 5:01Get 200 soldiers ready to leave for say Syria at 9:00 tonight.
- 5:07Also take 200 Spearman and 70 mounted troops.
- 5:11Provide horses for Paul to ride and get him safely to Governor
- 5:15Felix. Then he wrote this letter to the
- 5:18governor from Claudius Lyceus to His Excellency Governor Felix.
- 5:25Greetings. This man was seized by some Jews
- 5:29and they were about to kill him when I arrived with the troops.
- 5:32When I learned that he was a Roman citizen, I removed him to
- 5:36safety. Then I took him to their high
- 5:39council to try to learn the basis of the accusations against
- 5:42him. I soon discovered the charge was
- 5:45something regarding their religious law.
- 5:47Certainly nothing worthy of imprisonment or death.
- 5:50But when I was informed of a plot to kill him, I immediately
- 5:54sent him on to you. I have told his accusers to
- 5:57bring their charges before you. So that night, as ordered, the
- 6:03soldiers took Paul as far as Auntie Patras.
- 6:06They returned to the fortress the next morning while the
- 6:08mounted troops took him on to Say Syria.
- 6:11When they arrived in say, Syria, they presented Paul and the
- 6:14letter to Governor Felix. He read it and then asked Paul
- 6:18what province he was from. Sicilia, Paul answered.
- 6:23I will hear your case myself when your accusers arrive, the
- 6:27governor told him. Then the governor ordered him
- 6:30kept in the prison at Herod's headquarters.
- 6:35Our Jesus, we hear the story of Paul being in the world of
- 6:47danger, but you continuing to care for him and keeping him
- 6:51safe. And Lord, overtly you say words
- 6:55to him telling him to go on to Rome.
- 7:00That is where you want your message shared.
- 7:03Lord, we know that wasn't a safe or comfortable journey or
- 7:06destination for Paul, but still, that's where you need in him.
- 7:11Our Lord, I pray that you would use us in the same way that you
- 7:15would call us into the places where you need us to be.
- 7:19They may not be safe. They may not be comfortable.
- 7:22They may not be our first choice.
- 7:23But Lord, if that's where your Kingdom needs US, and the
- 7:26particular set of talents and possibilities that you have
- 7:30built into us, our Lord, we are your servants.
- 7:34So use us just the way you need us.
- 7:38We offer ourselves to you as a living sacrifice, ready to do
- 7:42your work wherever you would call us.
- 7:45We love you, and we offer ourselves up to you.
- 7:48And we pray all of this in your name, Jesus, Amen.
