- 0:07On Sunday, October 7th, 1962, the San Francisco Giants faced the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium for Game 3 of the 1962 World Series.
- 0:16The series was tied at one game apiece after the masterful three hits shut out by the Giants Jack Sanford in Game 2.
- 0:22The series moved to New York for Game 3, where the Giants Billy Pierce faced the Yankees Bill Stafford.
- 0:28This audio recording is from the NBC Radio broadcast featuring announcers George Kell and Joe Gargiola.
- 0:58And by the Gillette Safety Racer Company, maker of the new Gillette Slim Adjustable Racer, remarkable super blue blades that give off an unbelievable shaming comfort,
- 1:12fully the cream of all instant levels, and right guard, the new Power Spray Deodorant for Man.
- 1:19The third game of the 1962 World Series. Yesterday we're here in Yankee Stadium, and in a few moments we'll be all set to bring you the big third game.
- 1:29We say the big one because both managers, it was interesting to note, it's a pivotal game. As far as the pitching is concerned, Alvin Dark says we're not hurting too badly because it'll be Juan Marichal.
- 1:42For the Yankees, it would be Whitey Ford. That would be tomorrow. But the big game today, that's the one that will determine just who will be used.
- 1:51Billy Pierce will be pitching for the San Francisco Giants this afternoon, and for the Yankees it'll be Bill Stafford.
- 1:58Pierce has done a tremendous job for these Giants. He followed them coming down that stretch in a nationally raised and in the playoffs.
- 2:06Remember it was Billy Pierce who came in to nail it down. Pierce has been a big pleasant surprise with his fastball more than anything else.
- 2:14The playoffs, he was not afraid to challenge the Dodger hitters. Pierce has been known to have a good slider and a good curveball,
- 2:22but it was the fastball that he kept down that seemed to keep the Dodger hitters off-stride.
- 2:27Billy Pierce, the left-hander is warming up to the left of home plate while a right-hander and sinker baller, Bill Stafford, is warming up on the other side.
- 2:36Now this broadcast is authorized under broadcasting rights granted by the Commissioner of Baseball solely for the entertainment of our listening audience.
- 2:43And any publication rebroadcasts or other use of the descriptions and the confidence game without the express consent of the Commissioner is prohibited.
- 2:51Bill Stafford, we're watching warm up right now, he's throwing sinker balls. When you talk to his catchers, both Alston Howard, who by the way will be in the lineup along with Moose Scarn,
- 3:02Alston Howard says his stafford's got them all as far as thinking. It depends heavily on a sinker ball, but he throws a slider, a change-up and a curve.
- 3:12And when you talk to him, the one thing that both Yogi and Alston Howard add right now is that Stafford is not afraid to throw strikes.
- 3:21He's got good control and he's not afraid to get that ball over. So that's the way the ball player prays.
- 3:27If you're a fellow for statistics, I'm not too much far myself, the way they measure it is your base on balls should be about half of what they strike outs are.
- 3:38Stafford, before the season, 176 strikes outs and he walked only 57 men. He's a big, powerful guy who comes about three quarters and if he's got his good stuff,
- 3:48he should see a lot of ground balls. He, like Billy Pierce, pitches down. It's a partly cloudy day here at Yankee Stadium and the sun has been coming in and out.
- 3:58You bring that up because it seems like every October when these Yankees are in the World Series, the shadows become so famous and so prominent here at Yankee Stadium.
- 4:08Neither ball club was able to work out yesterday because of the weather. Today, when this run was out, both left-fielders try to get out there to try to see if there was any effect as far as the shadows are concerned.
- 4:22Right now, there isn't a shadow to be seen in this ball fight. The grass was just cut this morning so it's a very fast and veal and a very fast out veal.
- 4:31Ball clubs like to work out right after work has been done on the infield but that was impossible because of the weather yesterday.
- 4:39As we mentioned, neither ball club worked out and this morning the ground crew telling me that at seven o'clock they were out and they were already working on the grass.
- 4:48The lineups just a bit different to the extent that Alvin Dike is leading off with Philippe Alou. This is the first time this year that Philippe Alou is leading off.
- 4:58He'll be playing left field while big Willie McCovey will be in right field.
- 5:03With some thought as to whether it would be McCovey or Sopeta in the lineup, Alvin Dike, the manager, has solved that problem by having both of them in the lineup.
- 5:11Sopeta will be at first base and McCovey will be in right field. You might add that McCovey put on some exhibition of long ball hitting during batting practice.
- 5:20Big Yankee Stadium down the right field line, it's 296 feet but it really fells out to a 3-44 and right center which is a power slot.
- 5:29Right center and left center. Right center, it's 407. A big three-tier grandstand here and McCovey hit two of them that I saw into the third tier.
- 5:40So Willie was really putting on some exhibition of hitting during batting practice.
- 5:44There's no breeze here. The official temperature is somewhere around 65 and they say the wind is from northwest 15 to 25 miles per hour.
- 5:52The ball players will be constantly checking the flags as far as they're concerned. Not being the weathermen, not knowing maybe the direction whether it's northwest, the flags are blowing towards the right field corner.
- 6:03They'll be looking towards those flags all afternoon.
- 6:06Moose Scarron and Elston Howard not in the second ball game at 2-0 three-hits shutout pitch by Jack Sanford. Both of them will be in the lineup.
- 6:17Howard has his wrist heavily taped. Scarron with the bat back feeling much better. He'll be in the lineup.
- 6:23And here are the lineups for the visiting San Francisco Giants.
- 6:28Philippe Alou leads off. He'll be in left field. Alou left field. Batting second, it's Chuck Hiller at second base.
- 6:37Hiller, second base. Batting third in center field, it's Willie Mays. Mays will be in center field. Batting third.
- 6:44In the cleanup spot, it's the right fielder McCovey. Willie McCovey, MC capital C-O-V-E-Y. McCovey will be in right field.
- 6:53Batting fifth, it'll be the first baseman Orlando Sapeta. Sapeta, C-E-P-A-D-A. Sapeta will be in first base.
- 7:02The catcher, the pride of Strawberry Plains Ed Bailey. Bailey will be the catcher.
- 7:08Batting seventh, it'll be the third baseman Jim Davenport. Davenport bat seventh.
- 7:14And batting eighth, it's the surprise of the series so far. The shortstop, Jose Pagan. Pagan is the shortstop.
- 7:21And batting ninth, it's the pitcher Billy Pierce. Pierce is 1-16, he is lost to six.
- 7:27All the New York Yankees leading off, it'll be the shortstop Tony Kuback. Kuback, the shortstop.
- 7:33Batting second, the second baseman Bobby Richardson. Richardson at second base. Batting third, it's Tresh.
- 7:40Tresh will be in left field. Batting fourth, it's the center fielder Mannell. Mannell will be in center field.
- 7:46Batting fifth, it's the right fielder Roger Maris. Maris will be in right field.
- 7:51Batting sixth, the catcher Alston Howard. Howard the catcher.
- 7:55Batting seventh, the first baseman Scowren. Moose Scowren at first base.
- 8:00Batting eighth, it's the third baseman Boyer. Cleat Boyer at third base and batting ninth, it's the pitcher Bill Stafford.
- 8:06Stafford is 1-14, and he is lost nine.
- 8:10Stafford against Billy Pierce, the third game of the 1962 World Series.
- 8:16And the third game of this 1962 World Series is being brought to you from Yankee Stadium in New York.
- 8:23See that new Plymouth parked outside?
- 8:27Nice, huh?
- 8:28Who's is it?
- 8:29Mine.
- 8:33Plymouth 63 on the move. You'll see it in the dramatic new styling, wide and low.
- 8:38Clean line, unpluttered surfaces.
- 8:41Inside you'll also see the new quality in the trim, the new colors,
- 8:45a new easier to read instrument panel.
- 8:48And you'll also feel it in the greater strength and durability from Chrysler Corporation's Unibody Construction.
- 8:54In convertibles, hard tops, station wagons.
- 8:57In 26 models, you'll see and feel why Plymouth 63 is on the move.
- 9:02Let your dealer demonstrate the car on the move.
- 9:06Plymouth 63, a product of Chrysler Corporation.
- 9:11Where quality is engineered into every car.
- 9:20Plymouth 63, a product of Chrysler Corporation.
- 9:50The gallant was streaming and the rocket red glare, the bumpers singing in air.
- 10:00The gates pulled through the night that our flag was still there.
- 10:08Both leaders and cars bang on, and the jets wave.
- 10:19All the land of the free, and the home of the brave.
- 10:41So with a plane of an a-slam from both four clubs head for the dugouts,
- 10:46and pretty soon it'll be the third game of this 1962 World Series.
- 10:50Both pitchers continue to warm up.
- 10:52It's been a long warm-up session for both Billy Fisk and Bill Stafford.
- 10:57A partly cloudy day, and the sun is just peeping through right now.
- 11:02It would stay like this, would be a little bit of a problem in left field.
- 11:06The double spots here are down the lines where it bellies out,
- 11:10and if you're not careful, as a right or left field is a ball,
- 11:12you just hook that wall and scoot on way out to left center or right center.
- 11:16Both the ball clubs working out before the game to guard against it.
- 11:20And right now we pause 10 seconds for station identification.
- 11:25This is WGY-810 on your dials, Connected-E.
- 11:28Are you mixing in the best?
- 11:31Is Saratoga fishy with the gal label?
- 11:34Hit out so tall the rest.
- 11:37Bill Stafford has just completed his warm-up to us as he is the second ball
- 11:42and the real good slider, Billy Pierce, just motioning to his catcher, Tom Haller.
- 11:46He's going to throw a couple more curveballs, an overhanded curveball,
- 11:50the kind that when we were kids we used to call it drop.
- 11:54On the home plate side, next to the Yankee dugout,
- 11:59Hall of Famer, Joe DiMaggio is getting all set to throw out the first ball.
- 12:04And with a smile on his face, he's just motioned Elston Howard to back up a little bit.
- 12:09There's Joe DiMaggio, tremendous man.
- 12:13Yankee Clipper, Hall of Famer, he gets that and throws a strike to Elston Howard.
- 12:22Yankee is all on the top step of the dugout, watching the great Yankee DiMaggio.
- 12:26Howard hands the ball back.
- 12:31DiMaggio now going through the Yankee dugout.
- 12:38The umpires are all poised, Stan Landis behind the plate.
- 12:46Here goes the Yankee, the long club.
- 12:51And if you're wondering about right handers against left handers and they're tuning to what have you,
- 12:57the Yankees have six right handers against left handers, no in-mars.
- 13:02Keep in mind that both Tom Thresch and Mickey Mannell switch hitters,
- 13:06six right handers excluding the pitchers,
- 13:10three left handers against the right hander, Bill Stafford.
- 13:15McCarvey and Zepeda both in the lineup for the Giants, Howard and Starren,
- 13:20downfall starters for the Yankees both in the lineup this afternoon.
- 13:24The third game in George Kell, it was kind of interesting to sit on a bench
- 13:29of both ball clubs and hear him say that this is the big ball game.
- 13:33It seems like every game in the World Series before it starts, it's always the big one.
- 13:37You're right, Joe, it is a big ball game for both ball clubs.
- 13:41As you said before, this is a pivotal ball game and each team would like to take a 2-1 edge
- 13:46and do tomorrow's game.
- 13:48And of course, both clubs would like a sweep here in this series
- 13:52and would like to wrap it up right here in Yankee Stadium.
- 13:55But Ralph Hough, I think, echoed the sentiments of all the ball players on both teams
- 13:59when he said it looks like an almost impossible task for either team to sweep
- 14:03in these three ball games because we're too evenly matched.
- 14:07And of course, the Yankees have run into a little better pitching from the Giants
- 14:12than they anticipated, although it would be hard to get them to admit that,
- 14:15but they felt like that the Giants staff coming through the playoffs
- 14:19might be a little bit weary, but Jack Sanford gave a tremendous rise
- 14:23to the pitching importance of the San Francisco Giants.
- 14:26Well, we're getting ready to go here in the third game of this World Series.
- 14:30Bill Stafford, a right-hander, is doing the pitching for the Yankees.
- 14:34Bill has won 14 and lost 9 this year, and his mound opponent will be the left-hander, Billy Pierce.
- 14:40Billy has won 60 and lost 6.
- 14:43The umpires here today, Stan Landis, will be behind the plate.
- 14:47Jim Honarchick of the American League at first base, Al Barlich of the National League at second base,
- 14:53and Charlie Berry of the American League will be on a third.
- 14:57Hank Soar has moved down the left field line in this ball game,
- 15:01and Ken Burkhart of the National League is down the right field line.
- 15:04They have switched positions.
- 15:06As Joe told you, it's turned out to be a pretty good afternoon here in New York.
- 15:11Rain through most of yesterday and cloudy, cool weather forecasted here today,
- 15:16but right now the sun is popping through.
- 15:18We have a few blue skies up above, still some clouds around,
- 15:22but a bright, sunshiny afternoon is in prospect here for the third game of this World Series.
- 15:28A slight delay right now as the band in center field just getting off the field,
- 15:33and they're getting the chairs out of the way and closing the exit gate,
- 15:36and Philippe Ballou steps in to lead off for the Giants here in this third ball game.
- 15:41Alua right handed batter, he has a 3-33 batting average,
- 15:46he's been to the plate six times and he has two hits.
- 15:49He has no home runs, no runs batted in.
- 15:53Bill Stafford looking in to get the sign,
- 15:56and the first pitch of the ball game is on its way.
- 15:59A curve ball that's in there once right.
- 16:02This will not be the highly partisan crowd that we found in San Francisco,
- 16:07but the Giants have a lot of routers here in New York and they seem to be out in mass today.
- 16:12The pitch to Alua is in there,
- 16:14Spike too, another curve ball around the knees,
- 16:17a Spike to count.
- 16:20Alua, Hiller and Mays will be the giant batters here in the first inning.
- 16:26Stafford gets ready, here's the two strike pitch.
- 16:29A curve ball outside, he checked his swing just in time.
- 16:33The first time this year that Alua is leading off and that Stafford certainly not pitching to him
- 16:38as you would a lead off man, he hadn't tried to get ahead of Alua with a fast ball.
- 16:42He has done three breaking balls, two real good curve balls and a slider.
- 16:46Alua is a power hitter more or less, with McCovey and Sophena and Mays in there.
- 16:52It's about as powerful a lead off man as you can get.
- 16:56One ball and two strikes, Stafford ready.
- 16:59Here's the pitch, fast ball, it's a little bit high.
- 17:02This one just above the letters.
- 17:04Stafford thought he had him, he looked down to Stan Landis.
- 17:07A ball too and a strike to count.
- 17:11Yankees play him straight away, deep in the outfield.
- 17:14Everybody back on the infield.
- 17:16Bill gets ready, the two two pitch.
- 17:19Here's a lying drag in the center field,
- 17:21Madel racing in, he's got it.
- 17:24Alua hit that one like a bullet.
- 17:26A low liner in the left center,
- 17:28make him out, racing over to make the catch.
- 17:33That's one away, and the batter will be the second baseman, Chuck Hiller.
- 17:38Alua put his legs, Chuck's a left handed batter.
- 17:42He has a 286 batting average,
- 17:44he has two home runs and seven trips in the series.
- 17:48Two hits and seven trips, no home runs, no runs batted in.
- 17:54Stafford delivers a fast ball, it's in there, one strike together.
- 18:00We're in the first inning, one out with no one on, no score in the ball game.
- 18:09Time is called as a piece of paper comes floating across the infield
- 18:13and Stafford's going to run it down.
- 18:15We're going to see some high priced collectors this afternoon, George.
- 18:18Al Barlett just came up with a piece of paper, Stafford has just collected some.
- 18:22The breeze is really whipping through here and a lot of it is blown out of the stands
- 18:26and ball players hate to be distracted.
- 18:28Here's the one strike pitch, outside he got the fast ball off the corner.
- 18:32One and one to Hiller, the weather report for tomorrow is not good.
- 18:37Showers, cloudy weather forecasted for this area on Monday.
- 18:43The one one pitch coming up, curve ball, he got it over, one ball, two strikes.
- 18:48Stafford has thrown a lot of curves here in the first inning and he's been able to get them over.
- 18:55Shawkiller, left handed hitting second baseman standing in,
- 18:59chokes the bat as he waits on Stafford.
- 19:01Here's the one two pitch, change up, he got it too high.
- 19:04A ball two and a strike two count.
- 19:08Willie Mays is in the on-deck circle and you'll hear a roar from this crowd when Willie steps in.
- 19:14A great favorite here in New York.
- 19:17The club has moved to San Francisco but they have not forgotten Mr. Mays.
- 19:22Here's the two two pitch, down low, fast ball coming low and in.
- 19:26Three and two to Hiller.
- 19:29Both clubs tried to work out here yesterday but rain in appeared.
- 19:34They suited up, ran a little in the outfield but no chance for infield practice or batting practice.
- 19:41Stafford into the wind up, here's the three two pitch, ball he got it too high.
- 19:46Shawkiller, he's on the ball.
- 19:50Here's Willie Mays stepping in.
- 19:54Willie's batting average at 375 in the stairs, three hits and eight trips.
- 20:03Willie has no home runs and one run batted in.
- 20:08He's playing deep but around to the left.
- 20:11Everybody back on the infield but scouring. Stafford delivers a curve, he pops it up to the shot stop.
- 20:18Willie checked his swing on a curve ball, the ball hit his bat, never did get very high.
- 20:25Cube back moved over near the bag and suck it to make the catch.
- 20:28Well there's two outs and the batter will be Willie McCovey.
- 20:32No score here in the first inning. The giants with a runner in first base and two down.
- 20:39McCovey is a big left handed batter.
- 20:42Joey's probably a legend, looks like a lonesome in out there.
- 20:45He's about three steps already on the outfield grass as they really swing around to play McCovey to four head ball.
- 20:50Man was way over in right center, man is deep.
- 20:54Stafford checks his runner, the pitch to McCovey is inside, a fast ball that pushed him back.
- 20:59One ball and no strikes.
- 21:01The amazing thing about McCovey's home run off Terry was the fact that it stayed fair.
- 21:05Terry was talking about that tremendous shot that McCovey hit and candles, thinking he said his ball is inside as it was, he thought it'd go foul.
- 21:12Here's the one in open, strike, he got a fast ball over right around the knees.
- 21:16I think he shook the Yankees up a little when he said he didn't hit it good.
- 21:21He came up with some pretty good, he said, why should I travel up playing the Yankees?
- 21:26It's almost like playing the Mets in Houston.
- 21:29Here's a quick throw to first base, he'll are back in time.
- 21:32One ball, one strike.
- 21:35William McCovey the batter, big tall left handed batter.
- 21:40Stafford delivers, fast ball, he bounces it foul over to the end of the Yankee dugout.
- 21:45One ball, two strikes.
- 21:48McCovey is playing in the outfield today, so Peta has moved back to first base and Maddie Alou is out of the line up.
- 21:57We're in the first inning, there's no score in the ball game.
- 22:00Chuck Hiller is on a first base with two outs.
- 22:03Chuck threw a walk on a three-two pitch.
- 22:08Bill Stafford looking in.
- 22:12Taking a little time pitching to McCovey.
- 22:14Here's the one-two pitch. Change of pace, he pops it up behind the plate.
- 22:18This one's going to be out of play.
- 22:20Souvenir baseball for some lucky fan.
- 22:24Still a ball and two strikes.
- 22:27McCovey goes right in there, he's a real good fast ball hitter.
- 22:30The one pitch he had to learn to hit is the change of pace.
- 22:35He gets it back once he starts it forward, the weight of it and the size of it carries it right on through.
- 22:42Takes a little bit of courage, George.
- 22:44I thought this big ball would change up when you only 60 feet, 6 inches because that fat looks like it swells up when he's in the benefit box.
- 22:50I noticed Scowren was looking in to Stafford while he was changing up on him.
- 22:54He's pretty close himself.
- 22:57Bobby Richardson, the second baseman, playing about three or four steps back on the edge of the outfield grass.
- 23:04Stafford gets set.
- 23:06Here's the one-two pitch.
- 23:08Fastball is too high, but leaving the count at two and two.
- 23:17The all-important third game of this World Series, the giants and the Yankees locked at one game apiece.
- 23:24Stafford checking the sign, the two-two pitch.
- 23:27Curveball is too low, just below the knees with this one.
- 23:30So it's three and two to McCovey.
- 23:33The runner in first base will be moving on this pitch.
- 23:36You can see they wanted it badly for that very reason.
- 23:39They didn't want to give that here-and-those extra four steps that he'll pick up on the three-two.
- 23:43They wanted that decision on the two-two, and he really snapped off a good curveball, but McCovey, he knows that strike zone pretty well.
- 23:50We're ready to go. The three-two pitch. Curveball, it's inside.
- 23:54Willie, check this swing and tell him on a close pitch.
- 23:58Two walks here in the first inning, the giants have runners in first and second with two outs,
- 24:03and the batter will be Orlando Sopeta.
- 24:07Sopeta is looking for his first hit in the World Series. He's been to the plate four times.
- 24:14Big right-handed batter. Stafford delivers a curve, one strike.
- 24:22The Yankees will play Orlando a little bit in the right field.
- 24:26Mickey Mowell was over in right center, has moved back a little bit towards center field.
- 24:31Tommy Trash over in left center. Here's the one strike pitch. Another curve, it's inside. One ball, one strike.
- 24:39Two on, two outs, no score in the first inning.
- 24:43Bill Stafford trying to get them out.
- 24:48Checks his runners. Here's the one-one pitch. Swing with them is. He got the pass ball by one ball, two strikes.
- 24:57They try to keep the ball inside to Sopeta. Like set ball out over the plate,
- 25:02something he can rifle up the alley in right center. Stafford trying to pitch him tight, keeping the curve down low.
- 25:10Here's the one-two pitch. Here's the curve. He hits it deep to the left if he stays there. It's gone.
- 25:15It is foul ball in left field. Sopeta caught a curve ball and drove it deep in the left and curved foul at the last moment.
- 25:24Sopeta when he came into the National League, right now Elston Howard out talking to his British stafford and settling down.
- 25:31Sopeta when he came into the National League, came into the League with a reputation of being a real good breaking ball hitter,
- 25:37which is unusual for the young ball players. Usually the other way around, if they have to learn how to hit the curve ball or the breaking stuff,
- 25:43they're all powerful fastball hitters. But Sopeta is deep in the batter's box, kind of a high-speed stance,
- 25:49like the older fellas tell you, and can hit that ball in the right center and he waits. He waits on it for a ball.
- 25:55Stafford ready. The one-two pitch. Here's a ground ball of a second base. Richardson out to the left here with the ball of first.
- 26:01He's down on a close play. Bobby Richardson fumbled the ball for just a moment, flipped it over to first in time against Sopeta.
- 26:09Now, Ron Snow hits, no arrows, two men left, and the score at the end of the first half, the first turning,
- 26:14and that's nothing with the Yankees coming to bat. And what about that one? A 63 Plymouth Sport Fury. That's for me.
- 26:27Plymouth's on the move, and the 1963 Plymouth Sport Fury is built especially for the man who likes a car on the move.
- 26:37This is Plymouth with dramatic new styling, but with famous Chrysler engineering features that lead the field.
- 26:44From the wide low grille to the broad low hood and fresh new roof line, this car is all new. It's a brand new design, clean, uncomplicated lines,
- 26:54looks and beauty with no reduction in the performance that made Plymouth champ of its class.
- 27:00Now, for the one you have to own one to catch one. At your dealers now, Plymouth 63, a product of Chrysler Corporation.
- 27:09Where quality and interior into every car.
- 27:19Now we move along into the bottom of the first turning. There's no score in the ball game. Billy Pierce, a left hander, is taking his warm up tosses.
- 27:28He won 16 ball games for the Giants this year. He lost 6. One of those 16, the all important win in the first game of the playoffs when he could out his 8-0.
- 27:38He also pitched in the ninth inning of the third game of the playoffs.
- 27:44Tony Kueberk, the leadoff man. He'll be followed by Bobby Richardson, then Tommy Trash. Tony's a left handed batter.
- 27:51Those two hits and nine trips in the series for a 222 betting average. Takes a curve and it's in there. One strike.
- 28:00Tony's charting up, blocked a bot. A third baseman Davenport is playing right in on top of it. McCovey's in a step or two at first base.
- 28:11Billy into the wind up. Here's a one strike pitch. A foul ball has been coming back to the screen.
- 28:17It's a play to it first base. McCovey is the right fielder today. A two strike count. Two Tony Kueberk.
- 28:29The Giants play Tony Shala in the outfield pretty much straight away. Pierce delivers. Curve ball. He hits it in the left center field.
- 28:36Alu drifting back. He's there and he makes a catch. A one handed catch. Alu is having trouble with the sun and at the last moment he reached up and caught it.
- 28:46The problem with the sun when you hear the ball players talk about it is that you lose it as it comes with the background of the people.
- 28:54Then they get up above the stands. You're looking right into the sun. It comes back down. It's really on you before you realize it.
- 29:00It's a partly cloudy day. It's going to be a yo-yo day with those sunglasses off and on, but they better have them out there.
- 29:07Pierce Bobby Richardson in the second baseman. Pierce delivers. Curve. It's in there. One strike to Bobby.
- 29:14One hit and nine trips in the series for Bobby for a one-eleven batting average. A little right handed batter. Billy gets ready.
- 29:23There's the one strike pitch. Outside. One ball. One strike. No score. We're in the bottom of the first inning. The Giants had two runners in the first both on walks.
- 29:33Here's the one-one pitch. He swings and pops it out of play. This one coming back into the upper deck. One ball. Two strikes.
- 29:44This is a great ballpark for both Mickey Manley and Mays as far as defensive abilities and putting them on display.
- 29:52Willie is very shallow in center field and he likes the big ballpark where he can go into high gear and chase it down. He's way in close.
- 29:59Pierce gets ready. Here's the one-two pitch. Bobby swings and hits a five ball into right center field. Mays going over. McCovey is there. McCovey makes a one-handed catch.
- 30:09Bobby Richardson out on a flat of Willie McCovey in right center field. He comes two down and the batter will be Tommy Trish.
- 30:19Willie Mays was all set to make that play and McCovey just bleeps stuff like he's picking cherries. That wouldn't be surprising because he had to see Mays run right between his legs on one of those plays.
- 30:29I think they're afraid to let Willie take those five balls. Not sure of them.
- 30:34Mays probably told him, he said, look, I'll take everything I can get my hands on. McCovey's going to say, nope, I'm not here to play and that's what I'm going to do. He just bleeps stuff and grabbed it.
- 30:42Here's Tom Trish. Billy Pierce delivers a bouncing foul behind the plate, rolling off to the left. Now, one strike, Tommy's a switch batter. He'll be batting right-handed against Billy Pierce.
- 30:54He's had three hits and eight trips in the series for 375 batting average. We're in the bottom of the first inning. There's two outs with no one on. There's no score in the ballgame.
- 31:05Right now, it's Bailey has just moved out to the mound for a short conference with Billy Pierce. Looks like he may have been crossed up a bit, George, that curveball broke more than he thought.
- 31:14Like he may have been looking for a fastball or a slider which wouldn't break as much as the curveball it pierced through because Bailey hadn't shifted over as much as he wanted to.
- 31:22Here's the one strike, bitch. He swings and bounces this one foul down the third baseline. Strike two to Tommy Trish.
- 31:30Here's has a good slider and the difference between the curveball and the slider. The slider looks like a fastball and just breaks a little bit down and in whereas the curveball has more of a break on.
- 31:42It's a bigger break and therefore you really have to shift over and Bailey kind of reached for the first pitch.
- 31:47Billy into the wind-up. The two strike, bitch, is down low. Very close. Strike started his swing. He checked into one ball, two strikes.
- 31:55Billy has great control. He'll be pitching to the corners here this afternoon. Good live fastball, good curve, and he'll throw a few slatters.
- 32:05A one, two, bitch. Fastball, line, foul into the seats down the left wheel. Still a ball and two strikes.
- 32:15Tony Cubak started the sending with a foul all the left field. Bobby Richardson then flied to right field. Now Tommy Trish the batter with one ball, two strikes.
- 32:25No score in the first inning. Billy Pierce into the wind-up. Here's the one, two, bitch. Fastball, it's too low. The count is even at two and two.
- 32:38No hits on the scoreboard as yet. The Giants had two walks in the first inning. Both McCovey and Hiller walked on three, two pitches.
- 32:48Billy ready. The pitch to Trish. He swings and misses.
- 32:53Tommy Trish goes down swinging. No runs, no hits, no errors, no one left.
- 32:58And the score at the end of one full inning of play. The Giants, nothing, the Yankees, nothing.
- 33:03Say, there's a new 63. A 63 what? A 63 Plymouth. So that's a Plymouth.
- 33:11Only when you hear this car's name do you know it's a low priced car. Plymouth 63. An exciting car with clean lines, a flat deck, a tough, tight car and a tiger on the road.
- 33:24Plymouth on the move. A performing car, engineered by Chrysler to be champ car in the Plymouth, Ford and Chevy meet. A car of such character and quality that just stepping into Plymouth gives you a feeling of pride.
- 33:38Plymouth on the move. A car with new tingle for the young in art. New satisfaction for the wise in purse.
- 33:45Let your dealer show you Plymouth for 63. A product of Chrysler Corporation. Where quality is engineered into every car.
- 33:59Now we move along into the top of the second inning. No score in the ballgame. In Bailey the catcher will be the lead off man for the Giants. He'll be followed by Jim Davenport and the shortstop Jose Pagan.
- 34:15Bailey's a left handed better. Spend of the plate four times in the series, he has no hits.
- 34:26Yankees move deep and around to the right for the big left handed batter. Bobby Richardson once again on the edge of the outfield grass. Scouring only a step from the grass near the bag at first base.
- 34:39Bill Stafford looking in. Here's the bench. Her ball, he bounces it foul. One strike.
- 34:50Bailey was the catcher in the first ballgame of the series for the Giants. Tom Haller did the catching in the second game.
- 35:01A one strike count to the big fella. He's right down on the end of the bat. Stafford ready. The one strike pitch. Ball, it's in tight.
- 35:09One and one to Bailey. Bill won 14 ballgames during the regular season. Nine times he was a loser. Here's the one-one pitch.
- 35:27A swing and a fly ball hit into center field. Mickey Mantle is moving in a couple of steps. He's there and he makes the catch.
- 35:33Head Bailey goes out on a fly to Mantle in center field. That's one away. That'll bring up the third baseman, Jim Davenport.
- 35:43Jimmy's a right handed batter. He's had one hit in the series and five trips for a 200 batting average.
- 35:52We've seen some great infield play in the series. Davenport and Boyer third base have turned in some sterling plays.
- 36:00Here's the pitch. Turn of ball. He got it over. One strike.
- 36:04So far that's Stafford has had as good a curve ball. That's seen him have this here, George. Usually he's rare banged and pumped that ball.
- 36:11Good break and stuff, but he's got a real good break on this one.
- 36:13Here's the one strike pitch. Another curve. Lined a left field over the head of Boyer.
- 36:18Into the corner here's Davenport around first on his way to second. The throw coming in is not in time.
- 36:26Jim Davenport lined one just down the reach of Boyer third base into the corner left field.
- 36:33And he has a double the first hit of the ball game.
- 36:38It's all the giants with a runner at second base, one up and the batter will be Jose Pagán.
- 36:44This little fellow has three hits and five trips for a 600 batting average. He has one run battered in.
- 36:54Stafford delivers a pass ball up high. One ball, no strikes.
- 37:05Boyer about even with a bag at third. This little fellow likes to butt. He's one of the fastest baserunners on this ball club.
- 37:15Here's the one at O-Page. Curve ball, he got it in tight. Ball two and no strikes.
- 37:24The giants threatened in the first inning. They have two walks. Failed to score as Sapeyta grounded to the second baseman in the inning.
- 37:33Now here in the second inning after Bailey had fly to center Davenport has just lined a double in the left field.
- 37:41Here's the two and O-Page. Curve ball, he pops it up right back behind the plate all post into our radio booth.
- 37:49Ball two and strike one.
- 37:54What a good indication of the caliber of pitching in this series. Two balls and no strikes. A curve ball strike.
- 38:00The pitcher who can control something besides the fast ball when he's behind that hit or two nothing, three one, three O.
- 38:05That's the good pitcher in Stanford. Two nothing in the spot here. Snapped over a curve ball strike.
- 38:11The old taking the long look in on the two one pitch. Texas runner at second base. Here it is. Fast ball down low.
- 38:19A ball three and a strike one count to the gun. Jose stepping out of the box for a moment checking with Whitey Lockman down at third base.
- 38:28He wants to see if the hit sign is on for this three one pitch. And I would imagine it would be if it's to his liking.
- 38:38Stafford ready. Here it is. He swings and hits a bouncing ball the second. Richardson over to Scowern in town for the out.
- 38:45Davenport moves to third base. Jose Pagan going out second to first.
- 38:52The Giants have a runner at third base. Two down on the batter will be Billy Pierce. There's Billy coming on a left handed batter.
- 39:01There's no score in this ball game. Giants had three base runners. The Yankees had none so far.
- 39:13Billy Pierce stepping in. Stafford into the wind up. The pitch curve ball. It's too high. One ball and a strike.
- 39:21Yankee sending respect. Pierce is hitting a throw. Mickey Manley is playing in the right center field.
- 39:27Shashi Showell in left field. They get Milano Roman left center. Usually they play straight away or out to the opposite field.
- 39:32Here's the one and no pitch. A fly ball hit in the left center field. Trash racing over. He's there. Makes the catch.
- 39:38Billy Pierce out on a fly ball in the left center field.
- 39:42The Giants and the Suck-A-Nutting no runs on one hit. When a man left and the score at the end of the first half of the Suck-A-Nutting, the Giants, nothing. The Yankees, nothing.
- 39:53There's my next car. You can afford that. That is a 63 valiant. A 63 valiant.
- 40:01It's valiant for 63. All new outside. Trash clean. Easy to look at. The best all around comeback anybody's come up with yet.
- 40:09All new inside too. Where nothing is very compact. Valiant thinks big. The way it seats you. The way it carries you. The roof line is thinner. You get larger door openings. A lot more headroom.
- 40:21And you get excellent performance. Everything this little giant offers you is Chrysler engineered. Valiant does everything well. It's the best all around comeback anybody's come up with yet.
- 40:33The best valiant. At your flim of valiant dealers now. See the 1963 valiant. A product of Chrysler Corporation.
- 40:40Where quality and truth enter every cart.
- 40:50Let's pause 30 seconds here for station identification.
- 40:54This is WGY-810 on your dials connected. Is your beverage only half satisfying? Then ask yourself this question.
- 41:01Are you mixing it the best?
- 41:04Saratoga fishy with the Kale label. It outsells all the rest.
- 41:09The genuine fishy with the Kale label.
- 41:13Stay better tonight.
- 41:16Be better tomorrow.
- 41:19Saratoga with the Kale label.
- 41:23Now we move to the bottom of a second inning. Mickey Mantle will be the leadoff man for the Yankees. He'll be followed by Roger Maris and then Elston Howard.
- 41:32Billy Pears into the wind up and here's the first pitch. Ball. It's too low. One ball and no straight.
- 41:39Mickey has one hit in the series and eight trips. A 125 batting average.
- 41:44Batting right handed against the left hander. The one and no pitch. Down low. Ball two and no strikes.
- 41:54Once I asked him George if he ever batted right handed against a right handed pitcher of ice versus just to see the curve ball break away from him occasionally.
- 42:02He said only once and that was against Hoyt Wilhelm. Only to see the knuckle ball.
- 42:06Thinking he would have better luck from that side than his regular left handed side.
- 42:10There's a lot of right handed batters and problems telling him it breaks the same way.
- 42:15Say that's a real advantage.
- 42:18Here's the two and no pitch to Mickey. He swings and bounces it in the hole. The third base on Davenport can't take the play. It's not away from him.
- 42:25Davenport went into the hole to get the bouncing ball on the short hop. It's not away from him and Mantle is safe in first base.
- 42:32He's got to wait for a ruling on that. The score is an error against the fourth baseman. So Mantle in first base but no one out.
- 42:41And the batter will be Roger Maris.
- 42:46No home runs. He's had two runs batted in.
- 42:50So the Yankees have their first base runner and the shift is on against Maris.
- 42:55Billy Pierce delivers outside. One ball no strikes.
- 43:01But God, Hiller and Sepeda are all on the right side of the infield.
- 43:05Davenport is wide of the bracket third but he's playing in closer to than he did in San Francisco.
- 43:13Pierce gets set.
- 43:17Here's the one and no pitch. Ball is down low. Ball too and no strikes.
- 43:21Looks like Davenport may be trying to protect against that curve ball to be hit off the end of the bat.
- 43:26If Maris should hit the squibber, we'll have to see the unusual play of third baseman to shortstop to first.
- 43:33Because Pagan is right near the bag at second base. Hiller has to protect that hole between first and second.
- 43:39Billy gets ready. The two and no pitch. Ball is down low. A fast ball over the plate with two low.
- 43:45Three and order. Roger Maris. Mickey Mantle at first base with no one out here in the second.
- 43:51There's no score in the ball game.
- 43:57Billy taking a little time right now.
- 44:03Comes to a set position. Here's the three and no pitch.
- 44:07The strike. He gets the fast ball right down the middle.
- 44:09Rodgers taking all the way.
- 44:11Needless to say in the outfield the giants are deep and far to the right.
- 44:18Willie McCubbey is back on the warning track in deep right field.
- 44:22Pierce gets set. Here's the three one pitch.
- 44:26Strike two. A blazing fast ball over the plate as he needs.
- 44:30Three and two to Maris.
- 44:36We'll check Mickey Mantle at first base to see if he's moving on this pitch.
- 44:39Matt Van Rond was barely catching.
- 44:41Maris taking a good look across. He said he wants to know what's happening with Mantle.
- 44:45You have to look for him to run.
- 44:49Pierce gets a sign. Now he steps off bluffing Mickey back to first.
- 44:54Mickey acted like he might have been moving on that pitch.
- 44:59Pierce wanted to have a look at him just to get an idea. He gets ready again.
- 45:04Here's the pitch. There's a foul ball hit the right field. McCubbey is there waiting for it.
- 45:08On the warning track, Mantle is tagging up. He's headed towards second but he's going to hold on.
- 45:13McCubbey makes the throw in the second base.
- 45:17Roger Maris out on a high foul ball to Willie McCubbey in right field.
- 45:21Probably two.
- 45:23That's one away and the batter will be Elston Howard.
- 45:26Got two. Probably two.
- 45:29A scoreless foul game here in the bottom of the second inning.
- 45:33The Yankees have a runner at first base with one down.
- 45:38Howard's a right-handed batter. He's had two hits and three trips.
- 45:42Now they did not play in the second game of the series.
- 45:48Pierce delivers. There's a pop-up behind the plate. It may be out of play, it is.
- 45:52Bailey coming back. He has no chance to get it.
- 45:55A one strike count.
- 45:57Howard hurt his wrist sliding into home plate in the first game.
- 46:04He was forced out of action for the second one.
- 46:11Everybody back on the infield but Zepeda who's holding against Mantle at first base.
- 46:19Billy Pierce looking in.
- 46:21A little left-hander gets set.
- 46:23There's the one strike, bitch. He swings and fouls it back.
- 46:27Strike two to Howard.
- 46:32When Billy Pierce was in the American League, Howard had great success against him.
- 46:36He was talking about it before the ball game.
- 46:39He just wondered, George, what is really an advantage of having played against a fellow before?
- 46:44Seems to me that every time it's bad, it's a new experience.
- 46:47I think so, Joe. You know how the curves are going to break. I always liked it a little better.
- 46:51Here's the pitch to Howard. He swings and hits the grab. He's still out.
- 46:54The Lou going back, right back. He's got it. A one-handed catch.
- 46:58Mickey Mantle is racing back to first base.
- 47:06The Lou has just made a great play on Elton Howard.
- 47:09As he raced all the way to the fair here in deep left field,
- 47:13he's high in the air and spirited with a one-handed catch.
- 47:16The ball was labeled home runner. Exhibition all the way.
- 47:20Looks like it was one of those singers that Howard got on top of.
- 47:24There was a two-strike no-ball house. He tried to get it up and in,
- 47:27but did not get it in, got it up all right.
- 47:29And now he really jumped on it. A tremendous play by El Lou.
- 47:32Two down and the batter is Bill Scowron.
- 47:35Pierce delivers. He's got swing and a miss.
- 47:38He got the fastball by one strike, Miss Scowron.
- 47:41Bill has been to the plate twice, looking for his first hit in the series.
- 47:50Oh, Lou had trouble on the first ball hit to him.
- 47:53A routine fly certainly had no trouble on this one as he made a great play.
- 47:57They're having a problem getting the Lou back. They want to move him back.
- 48:01Pierce gets set. The pitch. A swing and a miss.
- 48:05He foul-tipped it. This man lands right into the mid of Ed Baleigh.
- 48:09A strike two count to Bill Scowron.
- 48:13There's no score in the ball game. We're in the bottom of the second inning.
- 48:18Giants have one hit, one error. Yankees no hits, no errors.
- 48:26Yankee Mannell open this inning. He was safe on an error.
- 48:29He's still at first with two outs.
- 48:31Maris fly deep to the right. Howard deep to the left.
- 48:36Here's the pitch to Scowron. He swings and misses.
- 48:39The ball around the knees and Scowron strikes out.
- 48:42No runs, no hits, one error, one man left.
- 48:45The score at the end of two, the Yankee's nothing, the Giants nothing.
- 48:49Take a look at that, William. Hey, our 63 Valiant's a Valiant? Pretty classy.
- 48:57The 1963 Valiant. Best all-around compact anybody's come up with yet.
- 49:03It's a new Valiant, a roomier Valiant.
- 49:06The Valiant station wagon, for example, has more kid and cargo space than ever before.
- 49:10Plus these famous features, Torsion AIR eyes, unibody construction, the battery saving alternator.
- 49:17And that's just three of 27 features your Plymouth Valiant dealer's waiting to show you in the new Valiant station wagon.
- 49:24Some compacts are good at economy, some performance, some luxury.
- 49:28But Valiant does everything well. It's the best compact anybody's come up with yet.
- 49:33The 1963 Valiant, a product of Chrysler Corporation.
- 49:37We're quality, engine here, into every car.
- 49:47Well, a Lou the leadoff man.
- 49:49Well, the Giants here in a third inning and he's getting a big round of applause as he steps in.
- 49:54Believe so for one, he lined a mantle in center field back in the first inning.
- 50:01A scoreless ball game as we move into the top of the third inning.
- 50:05Bill Stafford against Billy Pierce here this afternoon.
- 50:09Here's the pitch to a Lou.
- 50:11Last ball, he got it over. One strike.
- 50:17Tomorrow, right here, it'll be Whitey Ford for the Yankees and Moan Marachel pitching for the Giants.
- 50:23Here's the pitch. Curve ball, he fouls it back.
- 50:26It's when the Alston Howard on the arm and rolls away.
- 50:29A strike two count.
- 50:37A Lou, Hiller and Mays will be the Giants batters here in the third inning.
- 50:44The Giants have had three base runners in the ball game.
- 50:47Two walks and a double. The Yankees have had one base runner.
- 50:52Mamel was safe on an error.
- 50:54Here's the two strike pitch. Curve ball, he pops it up.
- 50:57It may be out of play, it is. Howard's starting back, but he stopped.
- 51:06Still two strikes to Fully Follou.
- 51:09The lights have been turned on here at Yankee Stadium.
- 51:12The sun is still shining, it's a cloudy overcast day with the sun popping in and out.
- 51:17The umpires have ordered the lights to be turned on, starting the third inning.
- 51:23Stafford into the windup, delivers a curve, he pops it up again over near the dugout.
- 51:28This one behind the dugout, about two rows.
- 51:32Stafford hitting the corner with a good curve ball, keeping a Lou off stride.
- 51:37Stan Lambert's tossing a new baseball out to Stafford.
- 51:40He didn't like that one, he tossed it back and he gets another one.
- 51:49We'll be at Yankee Stadium today, tomorrow and Tuesday.
- 51:53If further games are needed, we'll be back in San Francisco on Thursday and Friday if necessary.
- 51:59Here's another foul ball that will be out of play.
- 52:01This one's going to land in the upper deck by in first base.
- 52:04A two-strike count to Philippe Alou.
- 52:20Philippe right down on the end of the bat, waiting on Stafford.
- 52:24Here's the pitch, curve ball, he hits it hard to third,
- 52:26Boyer has it to throw to first, he's out.
- 52:29Alou goes out, Boyer to Bill Scowren.
- 52:32That's one away, and the batter will be Chuck Hiller.
- 52:39Chuck drill walk his first time at bat.
- 52:41The Pan-editing second baseman's had two hits in a series and seven trips.
- 52:49It was a double by Hiller that picked up the first run against Ralph Terry in the second game.
- 52:53Hiller double, moved to third on a sacrifice and scored on a ground ball.
- 52:58Takes a fast ball outside, one ball, no strikes.
- 53:02Boyer's in close at third, everybody else back on the infield.
- 53:09One ball, no strikes.
- 53:12Here's the pitch, he swings and fouls it off down the left field line.
- 53:16This one going into the upper deck.
- 53:19One and one to Chuck Hiller.
- 53:21West Westrom is coaching at first base for the Giants and Whitey Lockman, coaching at third base.
- 53:33A capacity turn out here in Yankee Stadium.
- 53:38Here's the one one pitch, curve ball, he swings and misses.
- 53:42One ball, two strikes.
- 53:43Another good curve Joe and he's getting them over.
- 53:46And he's starting to let up a little bit on his curve ball which is the same as having another pitch.
- 53:51He's on a quick breaker, dive bomber type and he's letting up on his curve ball and Hiller was way out in front.
- 53:56Even if he hit that ball he wouldn't have driven it anywhere.
- 53:59Chuck chokes about a little more with two strikes on him just to protect the plate.
- 54:03Here's the one two pitch, curve ball, he bounces and fouls down the first base line.
- 54:09Same curve that he swung and missed on the pitch before.
- 54:12Chuck got out in front and pulled this one foul.
- 54:15One ball, two strikes.
- 54:20Stafford is very effective when he's able to get the curve ball over.
- 54:24When he can't get it over he's in a bit of trouble.
- 54:27Today he's been getting it over.
- 54:29He's usually in the clubhouse early.
- 54:32Here's the one two pitch, change of pace down low.
- 54:35This one a little bit too low and Stafford thought he had him.
- 54:38A ball two and a strike two count.
- 54:49Bill looking in to Elston Howard to get the sign.
- 54:52Here's the two two pitch.
- 54:54Ball, it's a high check to swing.
- 54:56Three and two to Hiller.
- 54:58Here's Alu and Hiller both, they've made Stafford work, they've made him use a lot of pitches which could be a telling factor in the late-ness ball game.
- 55:10Chuck standing in waiting on Stafford.
- 55:12Bill in to the wind up, the three two pitch.
- 55:15He swings and fouls it off down the left field line.
- 55:18Boyer is chasing it but he has no chance to get it.
- 55:21Still three and two.
- 55:23Alu used up seven pitches, this is the sixth one for Hiller.
- 55:28How many times do you see a fellow go out there and make three pitches and get out of it and go back into the doubt but Stafford is up there with the three two count on Hiller now after that really having to work against Alu.
- 55:41Well he has a cool cloudy afternoon.
- 55:43The sun is in behind the clouds right now so the heat should not be a problem to him.
- 55:48But he has thrown a lot of pitches here in the first three innings.
- 55:53Here's a three two pitch.
- 55:54Strike three call.
- 55:56He got the fast ball over and Hiller is called out on strikes.
- 56:00Let's shoot down and the batter will be Willie Mays.
- 56:04Willie popped to the shortstop his first time at that, checked his swing on a curve ball and popped it up.
- 56:10There's no score, we're on the top of the third innings two outs, no one on.
- 56:18Willie Mays a strong right handed batter.
- 56:23Here's the first pitch, fast ball and tight.
- 56:26One ball on strikes.
- 56:32Stafford looking to his third baseman Boyer to see if he's playing about where he wants him.
- 56:37Here's a bench, a ground ball hit to the shortstop he's going to have to hurry the long throw he is out.
- 56:43Give back.
- 56:44One over to Bill Starran in time to get Willie Mays.
- 56:47Now runs no hits, no errors, no one left on the score at the end of the first half of third inning.
- 56:52The giants nothing, the Yankees nothing.
- 56:56Hey see that new valiant?
- 56:58Nice.
- 56:59Yeah looks like a real winner.
- 57:011963 valiant, messed all around compact anybody's come up with yet.
- 57:08Some compacts have economy, some performance, but only the new 63 valiant does everything well.
- 57:15Valiant features small details such as floor mats of reinforced rubber for protection against spike heat.
- 57:22And valiant features big details, the battery saving alternator, torsion air eye, large door openings and spacious headroom.
- 57:30You'll want to take a good look at valiant this year.
- 57:33It's the best all around compact anybody's come up with yet.
- 57:37And your Plymouth valiant dealer, the 1963 valiant, a product of Chrysler Corporation.
- 57:43We're quality engineers into every car.
- 57:55Now we go to the bottom of the third inning, no score in the ballgame.
- 57:58Cleat warrior will lead off for the Yankees, and be followed by Stafford and then Tony Cubak.
- 58:04The Yankees have had but one base runner against Billy Pierce.
- 58:07That was Mickey Minal safe on an error leading off in the second inning.
- 58:11The lead by Laird on the end of first base as Billy retired the next three batters.
- 58:16Warriors had two hits and six trips for a 333 batting average.
- 58:21He swings and pops it up into center field.
- 58:24He's moving and moves back a couple of steps that he makes against.
- 58:28Cleat warrior swinging on the first pitch, flies to center.
- 58:33It's one away and the batter will be Bill Stafford.
- 58:38There's Bill coming on, nice round of applause, he steps in.
- 58:45He's going up with one hit.
- 58:48He's a double to Devon for it down the left field line.
- 58:51This is Stafford can swing that bat, another one ball game we had where Ralph Harkin put a hit run play on.
- 58:59Here's the first pitch, he swings and fows it back.
- 59:02Pierce coming in with a curve ball around the knees.
- 59:05A one strike cut.
- 59:10One out with no one on, we're in the bottom of the third inning, there's no score in the ballgame.
- 59:15Billy Pierce gets ready, here's the one strike pitch.
- 59:19Once it is fouled on the third base line.
- 59:22Stafford catching the third baseman, Davenport playing back a couple of steps once it fouled.
- 59:30So Billy Pierce is out in front with a strike two cut.
- 59:36To Maure the Yankees will come back with their great left-hander, Whitey Ford.
- 59:40And Alvin Dark will send Maureen Merischal his big right-hander to the mound.
- 59:45Here's the two strike pitch.
- 59:47He's got it.
- 59:49Bill Stafford is on a line right straight to Willie Mays in center field.
- 59:53George is talking about Whitey Ford, some fan with a great sense of humor, sending him a telegram and the message was,
- 1:00:00why don't you pitch every day and just find it Willie?
- 1:00:06Well, I think he's going to be a great player.
- 1:00:09And just find it Willie.
- 1:00:15Tony Cuback the batter.
- 1:00:18Tony sent a fly ball to their left field his first time at bat.
- 1:00:25Pierce delivers a slow curve, it's inside. One ball and a strike.
- 1:00:31A scoreless ball game in the bottom of a third inning, two outs with no one on.
- 1:00:35Here's the one in no pitch.
- 1:00:37A strike.
- 1:00:39A small coming in around the knees.
- 1:00:41One and one to Cuback.
- 1:00:47Billy Pierce working quickly, delivers.
- 1:00:50There's a fly ball down the left field and Alou going over near the fence.
- 1:00:54This is against the fence, he can't get in.
- 1:00:56Here's Cuback on his way to second.
- 1:00:58He'll go in with a double.
- 1:01:00Alou went over, he seemed to be there, then he shied away from the fence.
- 1:01:05The ball hit the corner of the fence and bound it back five.
- 1:01:08It's been one of those Halloween afternoons for Alou so far.
- 1:01:12He's made it tremendous play in this ball game, but here was the case where you could see him flip the glasses,
- 1:01:17look for the fence, look for the ball.
- 1:01:19The sun has been in, it's been out.
- 1:01:21Right now it's out, the lights are on and it's been a little bit of a job playing left field.
- 1:01:29We've seen some great left fielders, Joe, have trouble here in Yankee Stadium.
- 1:01:33It's always been a problem.
- 1:01:35I'll tell you, I think some left fielders play left field in Yankee Stadium
- 1:01:38when the game's over they wish they'd gone to that condition school.
- 1:01:44Bobby Richardson the batter, a runner at Saka with two down and a third inning,
- 1:01:49no score in the ball game.
- 1:01:51The Yankees with their first threat against Billy Pierce.
- 1:01:56Bobby sent a fly ball to right field his first time at bat.
- 1:02:00Here's the first pitch, it's too low.
- 1:02:04George I just kept my eyes on Philippe Alou in left field and before Pierce made the pitch
- 1:02:08he had the glasses down and up four different times and looking up.
- 1:02:13He may move back to right field next inning and turn it over to whoever wants it.
- 1:02:18Billy gets set, here's the one and no pitch.
- 1:02:21Here's a line drive straight to the first place.
- 1:02:24Bobby Richardson's lined the ball hard, right straight to the play to it first place.
- 1:02:29Now runs on one hit, there's been a whereas one man left and the score at the end of three.
- 1:02:34The Giants nothing, the Yankees nothing.
- 1:02:36Have you heard about the automobile industry's first five year or 50,000 mile warranty?
- 1:02:41Five years? 50,000 miles?
- 1:02:44That's right, it's the warranty now offered on 1963 Chrysler Corporation cars.
- 1:02:49What does it cover?
- 1:02:50It covers the powertrain of your car, the expensive parts to repair or replace.
- 1:02:54Sounds terrific.
- 1:02:55It's the most significant warranty ever offered on an automobile.
- 1:02:59Your dealer will be glad to explain his new warranty another first from Chrysler Corporation.
- 1:03:03Stay tuned for details later in this game.
- 1:03:07At the end of three no runs, one hit, one error for the Giants.
- 1:03:11No runs on one hit and no errors for the Yankees.
- 1:03:15The Giants have had a base runner to third base and the Yankees have had one down to second.
- 1:03:20Willie McCovey will be the lead off man for San Francisco here in the fourth inning.
- 1:03:27He'll be followed by Sepeda and then Ed Bailey.
- 1:03:32Willie taking a little time just now coming out of the dugout on his way up to home plate.
- 1:03:40Willie walked his first time at VAT.
- 1:03:42George is swinging at VAT and his regular VAT, I just wonder how he knows the difference between the two of them.
- 1:03:48Well he's got some weapon up there, it's a 35 inch, 35 ounce, big thick handle VAT and he really whips it.
- 1:03:58He has a very inviting target out in right field, 296 down the line, only 344 right behind where Roger Merris is playing.
- 1:04:07Here's Stafford's first pitch, a fastball at the knees, one strike.
- 1:04:11McCovey has had one hit in four trips in a series, that was a tremendous home run out at Candlestick Park.
- 1:04:23Stafford into the windup, delivers another fastball, it's inside, one ball, one strike.
- 1:04:29They don't over shift on McCovey but it's as close as you can get without over shifting.
- 1:04:33Q-Bag here, two steps from the bag, Richardson way back at Second base and Scowern drives that line.
- 1:04:39Here's the one one pitch, curve ball, it's in there, one ball, two strikes.
- 1:04:43Q-Bag is almost behind the pitcher, now we used to shift against Williams Joe and I remember one day,
- 1:04:48Johnny LaPon got right behind the pitcher and Trout was pitching, he says they don't need playing behind me,
- 1:04:53he says I'll take everything he hit through here and LaPon says I'm not sure you will if he hits it hard.
- 1:04:58Here's the one two pitch, fastball, it's in there, McCovey is called out on strikes,
- 1:05:03Bill Stafford plays the fastball right down the middle and Willie was caught looking.
- 1:05:09It's one away and the batter will be Orlando Sapeta.
- 1:05:15Sapeta is 0-4-1, he bounced to Bobby Richardson his first down at bat.
- 1:05:23Orlando a strong right-handed batter.
- 1:05:27Here's the pitch, ball, it's too low, one ball, no strikes.
- 1:05:31We're in the top of the fourth inning, one out with no one on, there's no score in the ballgame.
- 1:05:36Stafford against Billy Pierce here today.
- 1:05:39The one and oh pitch, he swings and fouls it off, this one coming back in the upper deck.
- 1:05:44One ball, one strike.
- 1:05:50Sapeta batting in the first inning with two on, drove one deep into the stands and left field
- 1:05:55at just curved foul at the last moment and Stafford got him to hit a bouncing ball the second base.
- 1:06:03Here's the one one pitch, curved ball, he bounces it to third, Boyer has it back of the bag,
- 1:06:07the long throw is up, man he's safe.
- 1:06:15Boyer had a long throw to make to scour and he pulled him off the bag and Sapeta is safe at first base.
- 1:06:21It'll be an error charged against Boyer.
- 1:06:23The Giants have a runner at first base with one out and the batter will be the catcher, Ed Bailey.
- 1:06:31Ed's on a foul ball to Mowell in center field this first time at bat.
- 1:06:38Ed's a left handed batter.
- 1:06:42Stafford chips his runner, here's the pitch, curved ball, it's too high.
- 1:06:47One ball and no strikes.
- 1:06:53Willie McCovey started this inning, he was called out on strikes.
- 1:06:56So, Peta just bounced to Boyer and he was safe when Boyer's throw was up high.
- 1:07:03Here's the one and no pitch to Bailey, he swings and misses.
- 1:07:07One ball, one strike.
- 1:07:09Yankees have pulled far to the right for Bailey, they're playing him as a pull hitter all the way.
- 1:07:23Stafford taking a little time as he looks in, checks his runner, here's the one and one pitch.
- 1:07:29Ball outside a slow curve just off the corner, ball two and strike one.
- 1:07:34Each team with one hit.
- 1:07:38Chewbacke has a double to left field for the Yankees and Davenport a double to left for the Giants.
- 1:07:44Each team has made one error, Davenport for the Giants and Boyer for the Yankees.
- 1:07:51It's Bailey standing in with a ball two and a strike one count.
- 1:08:04Stafford gets set, here's a quick throw to first, Peta back in time.
- 1:08:13No score, we're in the fourth inning.
- 1:08:15Here's the pitch, he swings and hits a slow ground ball to Chewbacke, he flips it over to Richardson, one out, back to first he's safe.
- 1:08:25The ball was not hit hard, right off the end of the bat, Chewbacke flipped it over to Richardson while the force out on Peta and the relay back to Scowron not in time to get Bailey.
- 1:08:35So he gets safe on the field, there's choice, with two down, the batter will be Jim Davenport.
- 1:08:39That's a better, a big guy but he can run and he got in on top of Bobby Richardson and Bobby had to take that extra step towards the base and get away in order to get the throw off the first base.
- 1:08:51Here's the pitch to Davenport, strike the fast ball coming in at the knees.
- 1:08:55Jimmy lined a double into the corner and left field his first time at bat.
- 1:08:59Stafford ready, the pitch, curve ball, he hits it into the air in the shallow left field, Tommy Trash is coming in, he's got it to the side's return.
- 1:09:13Jim Davenport flying the trash in left field, no runs, no hits, one error, one man left and the score at the end of the first half of the fourth inning, the giants, nothing, the Yankees, nothing.

- 1:10:31It's a scoreless ball game as we go into the bottom of the fourth inning, each team with one hit.
- 1:10:36Tresh was a strikeout victim his first time at that, that was back in the first inning.
- 1:10:43He can punch that ball George.
- 1:10:45A good runner, Joe you're right. The pitch is down low, one ball and a strike.
- 1:10:51Foul tips as Landis, he checked his swing on a low pitch and Landis said he foul tipped it so it'll be one strike.
- 1:11:00He went to the wind up, the pitch, he swings and pops it foul, this will be out of play back in the upper deck.
- 1:11:06Two strikes to Tresh.
- 1:11:08Tom he's been to the plate, nine times he's had three hits.
- 1:11:18A capacity turnout here at Yankee Stadium in New York.
- 1:11:24Billy Pierce gets ready, here's the two strike count.
- 1:11:27A high fly ball hits the center field, Willie Mays is coming in, waiting on it.
- 1:11:32He's got it, there's one away.
- 1:11:35Tommy Tresh flying the maze in center field.
- 1:11:38Joe if they didn't have the World Series here at Yankee Stadium, some of these people wouldn't know where to go during World Series time.
- 1:11:44Isn't that right?
- 1:11:48Mickey Mantle the batter, he was safe on an error his first time at bat.
- 1:11:52He was sitting right in front of the turnout in San Francisco where the foul went wild.
- 1:11:57He said it was pretty much the same way in New York, I said about 18-20 people out there.
- 1:12:00He said mostly the family, the wives.
- 1:12:02Every October it's schedule here.
- 1:12:04Pierce gets ready, the pitch to Mantle.
- 1:12:08He swings, there's a line around to left, Alou going back, he's there and he makes the catch.
- 1:12:14Mickey Mantle hits one hard, straight to Alou in left field.
- 1:12:18Willie moving back a couple of steps, made the catch.
- 1:12:22Now there's two outs, the batter is Maris.
- 1:12:24George they haven't been able to get under there, Pierce.
- 1:12:27The line guards that have been hit hard, they seem to hit over the ball.
- 1:12:30The ball hits the Howard hit, the ball hits the now hit.
- 1:12:33Even though it carries as far as it does, it's sinking.
- 1:12:36They haven't been able to really get under it and give it that lift.
- 1:12:42Maris on a foul ball to McCovey his first time at bat.
- 1:12:47The Rodgers had two hits on the series and eight trips.
- 1:12:52Two outs were going on here in the fourth inning, a scoreless ball game.
- 1:12:57Billy Pierce delivers a curve around the knees, one strike to Maris.
- 1:13:03Both pitchers have thrown a lot of curveballs here this afternoon.
- 1:13:11Billy taking a little time as he looks in.
- 1:13:15Here's the pitch, another curve, it's down low, one ball, one strike.
- 1:13:26The Giants are shifting against Maris once again, three infielders on the right side of the infield.
- 1:13:32Here's the one one pitch, he swings and misses, he's got the fast ball by it.
- 1:13:37One ball, two strikes.
- 1:13:43Roger hit a towering foul ball, the right field his first time at bat.
- 1:13:46Willie McCovey moving right back to the fence to make the catch.
- 1:13:51Here's the one two pitch, a foul ball back in the press box, still one and two.
- 1:14:03No score, we're in the bottom of the fourth inning, another pitchers duo.
- 1:14:06We've had some fine pitching in the swirl series.
- 1:14:10Here's ready, the one two pitch, curveball, he bounces it down the first baseline,
- 1:14:15Sepeda picks it up, the race to the bag, he's out.
- 1:14:18Roger Maris bounces to the first baseman, Orlando Sepeda.
- 1:14:22Now runs, no hits, no arrows, no unlapped, then the fourth, the in the fourth,
- 1:14:26the Giants nothing and the Yankees nothing.
- 1:14:29Here are more details on the new warranty described earlier in this game.
- 1:14:32The new five year or 50,000 mile warranty on 1963 Chrysler Corporation cars.
- 1:14:38This is the most important warranty ever offered on an automobile.
- 1:14:42It covers the powertrain, the workhorse of your car, the expensive parts to repair or replace.
- 1:14:48And the warranty is transferable if you sell the car.
- 1:14:51See your dealer for full details on the industry's first five year or 50,000 mile warranty from Chrysler Corporation.
- 1:14:59Let's pause 30 seconds here for a station identification.
- 1:15:03WGY is connectivity.
- 1:15:05You know it takes a special something extra to be a Major League Baseball player or anything else that rates as the very best.
- 1:15:10Take Saratoga Vichy for instance.
- 1:15:12Saratoga is naturally good, naturally lively, spring fresh flavor adds that extra snap and extra sparkle to every drink.
- 1:15:18In fact, Saratoga Vichy has such extra tattelizing flavor, it's delicious all by itself.
- 1:15:24Next time you get that great big thirst, enjoy the extra satisfaction you get only from Saratoga Vichy with the yellow label.
- 1:15:31Well, we go into the top of the fifth inning, there's no score in the ballgame.
- 1:15:36Jose Pagan will lead off for the Giants. He'll be followed by Billy Pierce and then Philippe Ballou.
- 1:15:43The guy comes up like this, this will make that third base and get up on his toes, huh?
- 1:15:48Joe, you don't have to remind me, I've played in close for a lot of these guys but they don't all but.
- 1:15:53Once in a while they swing away at you.
- 1:15:56Pagan, bounce the second base his first time at bat, takes a pitch inside, one ball or strikes.
- 1:16:04This little fellow beat out a punt on Whitey 4 to drove in the first giant run in the series, this is in the first ballgame.
- 1:16:14Stafford ready, there's the one at home, he swings and pops it up behind the plate, here's Howard coming back, he might have the room on it, he does, he makes the go.
- 1:16:27Jose Pagan, fouls to the catcher Elston Howard.
- 1:16:31I used to always like to look on the infielders face, you'd be catching on to Pagan, somebody come up, you know it's going to be funny, so you say come on in, be alive for the punt,
- 1:16:37they'd go in about 4 steps and he'd slash 1-5 and you guys would get so mad and all he was trying to do was remind you, just come on in, we just don't want you to lay back.
- 1:16:47Joe, I'm just glad I don't have to go through that anymore.
- 1:16:53Here's Billy Pierce, he's on a foul ball in the left field his first time at bat.
- 1:17:01Billy a left handed batter, Stafford delivers a curve, it's in there, one strike, you know the worst part about it, you call for those slow curves when you call the third baseman in, it's the good lad fastball.
- 1:17:17Stafford delivers another curve, it's outside, one ball, one strike.
- 1:17:24Billy Pierce the batter with one out and no one on and the fifth inning, no score in the ball game, Stafford into the wind up, the pitch, he swings and fouls it off,
- 1:17:34this one's going into the upper deck behind third base, one ball, two strikes.
- 1:17:42Billy's not a bad hitter and as Joe told you a few moments ago, the Yankees showing a lot of respect for his hitting ability as Mantle plays him to pull just a little bit.
- 1:17:53Of course one reason they're probably going to pitch him a lot of curve ball, they figure he'll pull that more than he will the fastball.
- 1:18:01Here's the one to pitch, down low he chucked his swing in time, Landis looking down to first base to Jim Hanichic, you see it, Billy had gone through the swing and Hanichic giving no sign, so it's a ball two and a strike two count.
- 1:18:18Boyer continues to play in close at third even with two strikes on Pierce.
- 1:18:25Here's the two to pitch, strike three called, he got the fastball over and Billy Pierce is called out on strike.
- 1:18:33Three strikeouts for Stafford.
- 1:18:37Happy enough to George, all of them called third strike, so Nelson Howard doing a pretty job at them, mixing up the pitches, like both pitches when you talk about them to their catchers they'll say they won't give it a same pitch twice, in and out, up and down, take a little off, a little off.
- 1:18:54Here's the pitch to Alou, he swings and fouls it back, this one's going to be out of play, it's coming back into the lower deck.
- 1:19:00One strike to Khalif Alou, Alou lying to center field his first time at bat, and the third inning he bounced to the third baseman Boyer.
- 1:19:10Here's the pitch, high fly ball hit the right field, Roger Maris moving in, caps under it, he's waiting, makes the catch on the side return.
- 1:19:19Now runs no hits, no arrows, no one left on the score at the end of the first half of the fifth inning, the Giants nothing, the Yankees nothing.

- 1:19:46He pitched the only perfect game in series history, not a man, reach base. The other day he was thinking about something else, let's listen.

- 1:20:40Ask for the Gillette World Series Special.
- 1:20:48Here's Elston Howard to lead off of the Yankees in the fifth inning.
- 1:20:52Ellie lined deep to left field his first time at battle. Lew made a great play on him. Pierce delivers ball, it's down low.
- 1:21:01One ball and no strikes.
- 1:21:06Right handed batter against a left handed pitcher.
- 1:21:11Of a scoreless ball game here in the bottom of the fifth inning, only two hits today, one by each team.
- 1:21:17Q-Back has a double for the Yankees, Jim Davenport a double for the Giants.
- 1:21:24Howard waiting on Pierce.
- 1:21:28Here's the one and no pitch. A swing and a ground ball in the left field right down the line, it may be extra bases. Here's Howard on his way to second to throw coming in, not in time.
- 1:21:43Elston Howard hit a blue blazer over the bag at third base into the corner in left field and the Yankees have a runner in second base with no one out.
- 1:21:57The batter will be Bill Scowren. The moose struck out his first time at bat.
- 1:22:08This is the first real threat against Billy Pierce. Yankees earlier had a runner in second base with two outs.
- 1:22:16Billy taking a little time as he looks in. Here's the pitch. Wall in tight, one ball no strikes.
- 1:22:25Scowren, Jack, you can in behind Howard trying to cut down his lead a bit. Scowren can hit all over, there's really no way to play a moose.
- 1:22:32He's placed that ball all over the ball, but you kind of just have to play deep and plan them out.
- 1:22:36Billy gets set again. Here's the one and no pitch. Striking up the fast ball over the inside corner.
- 1:22:44Joe Billy will be trying to pitch him in tight, trying to make him pull the ball as he doesn't want him to hit it on the ground on the right side and move Howard over to third base with one out.
- 1:22:54Of course, moose, as you said, hits all over. He hits that inside pitch to right field. One ball, one strike. Billy checks his runner. Here's the pitch.
- 1:23:07He swings it, lands it into the ground, and Howard, it's going to be a double play.
- 1:23:30Scowren hit one like a bullet. Davenport lead high into the air, speared the ball and fired it down to Hiller to double off Elston Howard.
- 1:23:38That one looked like he was going into the corner for extra bases. A great play by Davenport. There's two outs, and the batter will be Fleet Boyer.
- 1:23:48Fleet fly to center field his first time. Slow curve, here's a fly to center. Will he going back? Still going back. Way back in center he's got it.
- 1:23:58Warrior flying deep to center field. Off of the Yankees, no runs, one hit, no errors, no one left. And the score at the end of five, the Yankees, nothing, the Giants, nothing.
- 1:24:10Right now you can bet manager Ralph Hough is pondering several weighted decisions, and if he makes them the way he's been doing it all season, chances are they'll be right.
- 1:24:19One thing he can always be sure of is the right way to shave. With him it's Gillette's Super Blue Blades in the adjustable razor. The newest adjustable is the Slim.
- 1:24:29Now it's lighter for easier handling, longer for better balance, and it comes with a dispenser of Super Blue Blades and a 79 cent can of foamy Gillette's own instant lather, as this year's World Series Special.
- 1:24:41It's a 229 value and it's yours right now for only $1.95. The new Gillette Slim razor with its compact design gets right into those hard to reach spots under the nose and chin, and the Slim is adjustable.
- 1:24:55The precision dial provides nine different settings, and one is just right for your skin and beard. Get the Slim adjustable now with Super Blue Blades and foamy. A 229 value for only $1.95. You save 34 cents.
- 1:25:10So Gillette was quite a play by Mr. Davenport.
- 1:25:15Yes, sir. He's been making plays like that all year for these giants, Nick named him, and he passed his glove in the west with the hang on him.
- 1:25:23I'd say it was interesting to watch the battle between Pearson and Starlin trying to keep Starlin from hitting the ball the right side where the ground ball would move, and I went over to third base.
- 1:25:32This was moving in and out, and he jammed him twice, and then got a ball to the outside part of the plate, and to show you the power that a Starlin has, he actually broke his back on the line drive that he hit at Davenport as he went out to get the breaking ball and moved it.
- 1:25:47Davenport with those quick hands made the play, and so far the defensive plays, George has been all on the side of the giants. They've come up with some beauties, one by Davenport and one by Alu in the second inning of Elston Howard.
- 1:26:00Well, here's Chuck Heller to lead off for the giants in the sixth inning, followed by Mays and then Willie McCovey. A scoreless ball game here at the top of the sixth. Stafford delivers a pass. One ball, no strikes.
- 1:26:15Heller a left handed batter, he walked in the first inning, stuff got in the third. He's the one at Oakwich. He swings and sends a fly ball to right field. Maris is drifting back near the ball bin, he's there, makes the catch. One step from the pass.
- 1:26:34The wind is a big plant and the players are blowing towards the right field. You can see that Heller was not known as a home run hitter, he's got plenty of wood on the ball and back man is right up against that wall.
- 1:26:46Oh, there's one away and here's Willie Mays. Willie has popped to the short stop and grounded in the third to stop and two drips.
- 1:27:05Bill Stafford looking at, here's the pitch to Mays, he swings and fouls it off so he ought to play. One strike. Joe, did you hear the roar that went up here in the stadium when Scowern lined into the double play?
- 1:27:19It gives you an idea of how many giant fans are in this ballpark. All over town you can hear them and it's a tribute not only, there's only, well, a couple ballpins that you can say that about.
- 1:27:29Everybody kept talking about Willie's coming back and everybody seemed to know who they were talking about. It's like when they say, the man, you know, you're talking about a muse, when they talk about Willie's coming back, these giant fans, they're talking about only one guy.
- 1:27:41Here's the one strike, bitch, a curve ball that's in there. Strike two to Mays. Willie stepped back, the curve broke over the plate. A strike two cop.
- 1:27:50I think he was guessing a little bit, George.
- 1:27:52He might have been on that one, Joe, but if he ever guesses right, you've got a new ball game. Here's the pitch, a curve outside. One ball, two strikes.
- 1:28:04A few ballpins, they'll say they guess, they all look for pitches. When you ask them to define what's the difference between looking for a pitch and guessing, it really gets down to a fine line. Henry Allen's got the best answer. Henry says he's asking me guesses, he says, no, he looks. He says, well, what do you look for? He says, well, I look for the pitcher to throw it.
- 1:28:22Stafford ready. Here's the one, two, bitch. Curve ball, he's falling out on strikes.
- 1:28:29Silly Mays taking the curve over the outside corner was called out on strikes. He didn't like the call on that one. He whirled back to land us.
- 1:28:37Elston Howard thought it was freehouse. He had gone back towards the dugout. His head reminded him there's only two down. And the batter will be Willie McCovey.
- 1:28:47McCovey walked in the first inning, was called out on strikes in the port.
- 1:28:52Four strikeouts for Stafford and they've all been called strikes.
- 1:29:00Big left handed batter standing in against Stafford. The bitch, ball down low. One ball, no strikes.
- 1:29:11No score, we're in the sixth inning. Stafford against Bill Pierce here this afternoon. Here's the bitch.
- 1:29:18Five pop-blah behind shortstop. Cuback is going out. Trash coming in. This one's hit a mile high. He's got it. Cummy Trash.
- 1:29:28No runs, no hits, no errors, no one left. The score at the end of the first half of sixth inning. The giants, nothing in the Yankees, nothing.
- 1:29:36Well, come to the free-for-all. Yes, come to the big ball. Paper made free-for-all now at stores everywhere.

- 1:30:28Well, we move along into the bottom of the sixth inning. A scoreless ball game here at Yankee Stadium.
- 1:30:35The Yankees have had two hits in this game. The Chains have had one.
- 1:30:40A big round of applause for Bill Stafford as he comes on to lead off to the Yankees from the bottom of the sixth.
- 1:30:47We've Stafford, Quebec and Bobby Richardson.
- 1:30:53Tremendous pitching we've had throughout this entire series.
- 1:30:59Mighty Ford, the winner in the first game. Bill's Jack Samford, the winner.
- 1:31:04In the second game of the day, it's Bill, Ferris and Bill Stafford.
- 1:31:08Ferris is warning them of Ford to be alive for a part with the Stafford up there.
- 1:31:12Ready to go in the first pitch. He swings and misses on a low fastball. One strike.
- 1:31:18Bill hit the ball hard his first time at bat. He lined his straight to maze and center field.
- 1:31:25Bill appears looking in. Here's the pitch. Down low. One ball, one strike.
- 1:31:30The Yankees threaten in the fifth. Howard let off with a double but Scowern lined into a vicious double play.
- 1:31:37Here's the pitch. Down low. One ball, one strike.
- 1:31:41The Yankees threaten in the fifth. Howard let off with a double but Scowern lined into a vicious double play.
- 1:31:47Here's the pitch. The right two he tried to check his swing but he'd fallen too far.
- 1:31:52One ball, two strikes. Scowern's hard line drive was taken by Davenport on a leap at third base
- 1:31:59and fired it down the hill in time to double off power.
- 1:32:03The warrior had applied very deep into center field.
- 1:32:09One ball, two strikes to Stafford. Here's gets ready. The pitch. He struck him out.
- 1:32:15Through the fast ball by Evan Stafford goes down swinging.
- 1:32:20It's one away and the batter will be Q-Back.
- 1:32:25The Giants have no runs on one hit in this game. One error. The Yankees have no runs on two hits and they've made one error.
- 1:32:33Billy goes into the lineup. He swings and pops it up on the infield.
- 1:32:37By God his near second base waiting on it. He's got it. There's two outs.
- 1:32:43Tony Q-Back pops to the shark stop.
- 1:32:48He'll bring up Bobby Richardson, the second baseman.
- 1:32:51Bobby fly to right field in the first inning and the third inning he lined to the first baseman with the runner at second.
- 1:33:04Bobby had a single his first time in bat in this world series and that's been his only hit so far.
- 1:33:10Here's the bench. He swings and hits a hard ground at a shark.
- 1:33:14Here's the third of first. He's out.
- 1:33:16Richardson goes out.
- 1:33:18He's a fader.
- 1:33:20No runs, no hits, no run left.
- 1:33:22Then the score at the end of six. The Giants nothing and the Yankees nothing.
- 1:33:27How did you know that Gillette's Super Blue blades are made by an exclusive process that engineers call a scientific breakthrough?
- 1:33:34Super Blue edges are mirror finished so key so smooth they glide through the toughest beards like nothing.
- 1:33:41A dispenser is included with a new streamlined Gillette Slim adjustable razor and right now as a Gillette World Series Special
- 1:33:48you get both razor and blades with a 79 cent can of foamy instant leather.
- 1:33:54It's a 229 value and it's yours right now for only a dollar and ninety five.
- 1:33:58You save 34 cents.
- 1:34:02He is shut out by Stanford for the two nothing win and here is Billy Pierce having shut out these Yankees at six innings.
- 1:34:09So fifteen straight score of innings and that seems like just a bit on the unusual.
- 1:34:14A little bit Joe.
- 1:34:16Here's the fader to lead off for the Giants in the seventh inning.
- 1:34:20The first bench he's checked his swing.
- 1:34:22Nope, as long as he went through it.
- 1:34:24One strike through the fader.
- 1:34:26He'll be followed by Bailey and then Davenport.
- 1:34:29Orlando bounced the second in the first inning he was safe on an error in the fourth inning.
- 1:34:35Stafford delivers a change up he lands it down the left field line it's curving foul back into the crowd.
- 1:34:41A strike two counts.
- 1:34:47The Giants had two runners on in the first inning failed to score.
- 1:34:52Had a runner at third base with two outs in the second and failed to score.
- 1:34:58Yankees have not had a runner pass second base.
- 1:35:01Here's the pitch curve ball he pops it up right out in front of the plate.
- 1:35:04Who's gonna make the play Howard is there the pitchers calling and Howard makes the catch.
- 1:35:09Boy Stafford was off the mound Joe he was ready to make a play on it.
- 1:35:12He was Howard and now I'll take it out take it but look why the boy of me has said something.
- 1:35:16You certainly don't want your picture to make the play unless it's absolutely necessary and usually it's the picture who turns to be the cheerleader
- 1:35:23and kind of dies to play and calls for the popper man but Elston Howard took joins in the pop fly and they made the play.
- 1:35:31Head Bailey the batter.
- 1:35:35Head's 0-2 in this game Stafford delivers a curve it's outside one ball no strikes.
- 1:35:40Paul Richards used to say Joe what I played for him I don't want any balls dropping out there without anybody touching him.
- 1:35:45I don't care if three infielders run together and two get knocked out and two spike but I don't want anybody shying away from letting them fall.
- 1:35:52You should have seen the rush for five balls on that infield especially an old man like me playing with those kids they come charging in there like there's no tomorrow.
- 1:36:05One strike count a one ball count to it Bailey left handed batter.
- 1:36:11Here's the pitch outside ball two and no strikes.
- 1:36:16We're in the top of the seventh inning there's one out with no one on there's no score in the ball game.
- 1:36:21You will know judge you have a lot of wild things on those pop flies I used to like strickling whenever the pop fly go up you hear the other infielders.
- 1:36:27I got it I got it strickling always get alongside and say nah you got it let me see you catch it.
- 1:36:36Somebody said why don't you say I'll try it I'll try this one.
- 1:36:40Here's the two and no pitch down low three at O at a Bailey.
- 1:36:44The fastball too low. Did you notice in a matter of your career the influx of the proper English.
- 1:36:51I have it.
- 1:36:52Right.
- 1:36:56At Bailey standing in with a ball three and a no strike count.
- 1:37:00Stopper ready.
- 1:37:02Here's the pitch he swings on the three and no pitch and pops it up down the third baseline.
- 1:37:07For your is calling for this one makes the catch and there's two outs.
- 1:37:12Little dark gambling a little bit there at Bailey swinging away on the three and no pitch and he popped it up.
- 1:37:20Two down and the battle will be Jim Davenport.
- 1:37:30Jimmy's had a double in two trips today.
- 1:37:38No one on we're in the seventh inning no score in the game.
- 1:37:42Here's a swing and a miss on a fastball one strike.
- 1:37:53Stafford ready.
- 1:37:54The pitch strike to cut the outside corner.
- 1:37:59Two strikes to Davenport.
- 1:38:03Bill Stafford and Billy Pierce matching pitch for pitch here this afternoon in the third game of this 1962 World Series.
- 1:38:14Stafford checking the sign with Elston Howard.
- 1:38:17Here's the pitch.
- 1:38:18First down in left.
- 1:38:35his career and Willie makes everything look so easy.
- 1:38:38No wonder he goes for the Gillette way of shaving.
- 1:38:41Easy does it for the Gillette razor,
- 1:38:43especially the new Gillette slim
- 1:38:45and improves green line version
- 1:38:48of the famous Gillette adjustable.
- 1:38:50It has Gillette's exclusive precision dial
- 1:38:52with nine different blade settings
- 1:38:54and one is exactly right for you.
- 1:38:56This new slim is lighter, longer and it's primer
- 1:38:59for those hard to reach shaving areas.
- 1:39:02Try it with easy shaving Gillette Super Blue blades.
- 1:39:05It's made by a process that's Gillette's alone.
- 1:39:08Super blue edges are so keen and smooth
- 1:39:11you might think there was no blade in the razor at all.
- 1:39:14Right now you get both razor and blades
- 1:39:16on the Gillette World Series Special
- 1:39:18along with a 79 cent can of Gillette
- 1:39:21homey instant ladder at a 34 cent savings.
- 1:39:24It's a 229 value and it's yours for only $1.95.
- 1:39:28Well as we go into the bottom of the seventh inning,
- 1:39:31the Giants have no runs on one hit, they've made one error.
- 1:39:34And the Yankees have no runs on two hits
- 1:39:37and they've made one error.
- 1:39:38I had my eye on the Giants at the top
- 1:39:42and as the inning starts,
- 1:39:44Mary Jansen, the pitching coach is motioned to the bullpen
- 1:39:47to get somebody up.
- 1:39:49The charade that he played looked like he motioned
- 1:39:51to put down license to get up.
- 1:39:53The reason they're bringing it up is that Billy Fiers may have
- 1:39:55said something like watch me closely, I may be kind,
- 1:39:58but in any way the Giants have action in the bullpen.
- 1:40:01Here's Tommy Trish to lead off for the Yankees
- 1:40:04in the bottom of the seventh.
- 1:40:06He swings and lands it in the center field.
- 1:40:08Mays can't get any of blade on the first top.
- 1:40:11Tommy Trish, rifle run up the middle of the center.
- 1:40:14Willie Mays came racing in and he pulled up short
- 1:40:17and played it on the first top.
- 1:40:19He gets number three, play any piece of it.
- 1:40:22The runner in first place with no one out.
- 1:40:25And the batter will be Mickey Mantle
- 1:40:27and that falls for a conference out of the mound.
- 1:40:30Ed Bailey moving out to say something appears.
- 1:40:33One of the big things I'm sure they're talking about is
- 1:40:36who will be clubbing second base in the event that the ball
- 1:40:38is hit back to Billy Fiers.
- 1:40:40You might have doubt that Mantle would be funny
- 1:40:42in this situation.
- 1:40:44Billy Mays is checking with this to see how he's feeling.
- 1:40:47A lot of times a pitcher will be playing
- 1:40:49that when he comes in that his arm may be tightened
- 1:40:52or watched me and then of course it's up to the catcher
- 1:40:55to help his manager by stinging to the fence
- 1:40:58and maybe has lost it.
- 1:41:00Joe this big fella probably will be sacrificing it all
- 1:41:03but he can punt and he runs well
- 1:41:05so you can't play deep in third base.
- 1:41:07You've got to be alive for the punt for a base hit.
- 1:41:10So Davenport has a tough decision to make here
- 1:41:13and he'll be playing in about halfway against Mantle
- 1:41:16which gives Mickey a better chance to slam one by him
- 1:41:19and nobody hits the ball any harder down at third base line
- 1:41:22than Mantle.
- 1:41:24Mickey steps out just as Billy Fiers gets ready.
- 1:41:27Lamb is calling time until Mickey gets back in.
- 1:41:30Now we're ready.
- 1:41:32Here's the pitch.
- 1:41:34Ball outside.
- 1:41:36Fiers trying to keep the fast ball away from him.
- 1:41:38One ball and no strikes.
- 1:41:40He gave it an indication he wouldn't be pointing
- 1:41:42if anything drives up on the pitch.
- 1:41:44He's got his eye on his left field seat still.
- 1:41:47Fiers checks his runner in first base.
- 1:41:50Here's the pitch.
- 1:41:52Down low.
- 1:41:54A ball too and a no strike count.
- 1:41:56Billy Fiers thought that one was in there.
- 1:41:58He delivered the fast ball over the plate
- 1:42:00but too low to stand lambess.
- 1:42:02So it's a ball too and a no strike count.
- 1:42:05He's got his eye on his left field seat still.
- 1:42:08Fiers checks his runner in first base.
- 1:42:10Here's the pitch.
- 1:42:12Fiers gets ready again.
- 1:42:14Here's the two and no pitch.
- 1:42:16Mickey swings at the foul ball down the right field line.
- 1:42:19It's curving foul.
- 1:42:21This will be out of play.
- 1:42:23Ball two and strike one.
- 1:42:25He's got a cinch question.
- 1:42:27Third situation that the is able to hit the ball
- 1:42:30in the right field.
- 1:42:32If he's in any way there to the line,
- 1:42:34George Tresh will be able to score
- 1:42:36because McCabe is way over in right center field.
- 1:42:38They're playing man over right field.
- 1:42:40They're playing man over right center
- 1:42:42towards the left field line.
- 1:42:48You know Joe, it's a wonderful thing to have a ball player
- 1:42:50that can hit a ball a mile and still run like a deer.
- 1:42:52You don't see many of those guys that hit the long ball
- 1:42:55and they're fast. You can't double them up.
- 1:42:57Man was a tough man to double up.
- 1:43:01Here's the two one pitch.
- 1:43:03He swings and lines it into left field.
- 1:43:05This one's in there.
- 1:43:07Fiers is going to hit the third.
- 1:43:09He's going to be close. He is safe at third base.
- 1:43:11Madelow goes down in the second.
- 1:43:31Mickey Madel lined the ball in the left field.
- 1:43:34Alou played it on the first hop.
- 1:43:36It took a high hop.
- 1:43:38He's got a good lead in his glove.
- 1:43:40Fries had stopped at second base.
- 1:43:42When Alou juggled the ball in his glove,
- 1:43:44Tommy raced into third ahead of the throw by Alou.
- 1:43:47And Madelow goes down to second.
- 1:43:49It'll be an error charged against Alou.
- 1:43:51Or juggling the ball.
- 1:43:53It'll be a single for Madel.
- 1:43:55An error on Alou.
- 1:43:57And the Yankees will have runners at second and third
- 1:43:59with no one out.
- 1:44:01Al Dark, Joe, has moved out to the mound now
- 1:44:03for a conference with Billy Fiers.
- 1:44:05He's had a man warming up
- 1:44:07for the first time in his life.
- 1:44:09A base running of Thresh.
- 1:44:11He's a base running as he
- 1:44:13actually stopped at second base.
- 1:44:15And then Alou all over the ball took a little bit of a bad hop.
- 1:44:21It was a daring piece of base running
- 1:44:23because Alou had recovered by the time Thresh started for third.
- 1:44:26So it was just more or less daring him to throw him out.
- 1:44:28And his throw to third was a little bit off target.
- 1:44:31Which gave Thresh a chance to go in.
- 1:44:33And Madelow, of course, racing down to second
- 1:44:35on the throw to third.
- 1:44:37So the Yankees are threatening.
- 1:44:39Two on. No one out.
- 1:44:41And the batter is Roger Maris.
- 1:44:43He's wide-deep in the right
- 1:44:45and bounced the first base in two trips.
- 1:44:47Here's Ferris and Ben.
- 1:44:49He swings the right and in the right field.
- 1:44:51This one's in there for a hit.
- 1:44:53He runs in.
- 1:44:55Here's Ferris headed for second base.
- 1:44:57And he's going in safe place.
- 1:45:06Roger Maris, flying the ball hard
- 1:45:09in the right field.
- 1:45:12But Kavi came over to cut it off on the first hop.
- 1:45:15The ball bounced away from him.
- 1:45:17Maris racing in the second base.
- 1:45:19It'll be an error charged against the right fielder.
- 1:45:22Allowing Maris to go down to second.
- 1:45:24So it'll be a single for Roger with two runs batted in.
- 1:45:27And an error on the right fielder.
- 1:45:29Allowing Maris to go down to second base.
- 1:45:32So the Yankees have a runner in second with no one out.
- 1:45:35They're out in front of this ball game
- 1:45:37by a score of two to nothing.
- 1:45:39And we're going to get a pitching change right here.
- 1:45:41Al Dark has moved out to the mound
- 1:45:43and made the call to the bullpen.
- 1:45:45Joe, and I believe it's Lysen.
- 1:45:47You had him going in a hurry, George.
- 1:45:49You know, this Yankee ball club,
- 1:45:51two things that sometimes it's hard to do.
- 1:45:53Sometimes you get overlooked when you talk about the Yankees
- 1:45:56because you think about hitting in home runs and power.
- 1:46:00The two things overlooked is off field defense,
- 1:46:02how they can keep the double play in order
- 1:46:04by finding defensive work in the off field
- 1:46:06and how they can take that edge to base.
- 1:46:08Two and up, you move that man in the scoring position
- 1:46:11when you take that edge to base.
- 1:46:13But the big thing is you stay away from the inning record
- 1:46:16or the double play.
- 1:46:17Roger Maris never did hesitate
- 1:46:20as he got to first base,
- 1:46:23just went right on the round,
- 1:46:25and he's on a second base in scoring position.
- 1:46:28So right now it's a two to nothing score
- 1:46:31with the Yankees out in front.
- 1:46:33The line score, as we look at it,
- 1:46:35two runs, five hits in one area,
- 1:46:37four of the Yankees, no runs, one hit,
- 1:46:39and three errors for the Giants,
- 1:46:41two of those three errors right here in this city.
- 1:46:43And Billy Pierce will get a nice hand as he goes off.
- 1:46:46Yes, sir, Joe, here's Billy Pierce leaving the mound
- 1:46:51and he's getting a tremendous ovation
- 1:46:53from this large crowd in Yankee Stadium.
- 1:46:55And Billy has been quite a pitcher here this afternoon.
- 1:46:58He just seemed to run out of gas here on the seventh inning.
- 1:47:01And of course he's pitched a lot of ball down through the stretch
- 1:47:04and into the playoffs.
- 1:47:05He won the first game of the playoffs, eight to nothing.
- 1:47:08He came back and pitched that all-important ninth inning,
- 1:47:11protecting a two run lead in the third game of the playoffs
- 1:47:14and the way off that sent the Giants into this World Series
- 1:47:16against the Yankees.
- 1:47:18So Billy leaves giving up two runs on five hits.
- 1:47:22And of course he'll be responsible for the base runner
- 1:47:24that's down at second base right now,
- 1:47:26Roger Merris, in case he should score.
- 1:47:29And big Don Larson, who is certainly no stranger
- 1:47:33to Yankee Stadium will come on to do the pitching
- 1:47:36back in 1956, as everybody knows by now.
- 1:47:40Don Larson fits the only perfect game
- 1:47:43in World Series competition right here in Yankee Stadium.
- 1:47:48He'll be facing Elston Howard, the first batter.
- 1:47:52He'll always run for two.
- 1:47:54He lined deep to left field in the second inning.
- 1:47:56In the fifth inning, he sent a ground ball double
- 1:47:59over the bag at third base.
- 1:48:05Roger Merris at second base with no one out.
- 1:48:07The Yankees lead, two to nothing.
- 1:48:10Here's the pitch to Howard. Ball, it's down low.
- 1:48:13One ball and no strikes.
- 1:48:25Jose Pagan keeps racing over behind Merris,
- 1:48:27trying to hold Roger close at second base.
- 1:48:30Larson checks his runner. The pitch.
- 1:48:33A swing of his.
- 1:48:35Hard slider breaking to the outside corner.
- 1:48:38One ball, one strike.
- 1:48:45Yankees will be trying to move Merris to third base
- 1:48:48without using the sacrifice.
- 1:48:50They would like for Howard to swing away,
- 1:48:52trying for the base hit, but if not,
- 1:48:54they're moving along to third.
- 1:48:56Here's the pitch.
- 1:48:58There's a high-fly ball hit the center field.
- 1:49:00Not too deep. Merris is tagging.
- 1:49:02I doubt he'll go. Here he goes for third.
- 1:49:04Here's the throw coming across.
- 1:49:06Third base.
- 1:49:08Merris is throw a little bit off line,
- 1:49:10and Merris slides in safely.
- 1:49:16He just literally challenged Willie Merris
- 1:49:18by coming on over.
- 1:49:20I didn't think he would make it.
- 1:49:22Willie with the tremendous throwing arm,
- 1:49:24but Roger Merris just tagged up
- 1:49:26and came on over and picked up a mighty big base.
- 1:49:28He's sacrificed far now.
- 1:49:30Pick it up. It looks like Yankees will have to come in,
- 1:49:32which of course will really be the advantage
- 1:49:34of Moose Cowan.
- 1:49:36Bill Cowan the batter.
- 1:49:38The Yankees leading two to nothing here
- 1:49:40in the bottom of the seventh.
- 1:49:42Roger Merris is on a third base with one out.
- 1:49:44As Joe told you, the Giants
- 1:49:46are going to play their infield in close.
- 1:49:50Cowan struck out in the second inning,
- 1:49:52and he lined hard to Davenport.
- 1:49:54And the fifth thing,
- 1:49:56Davenport turning it into a double play.
- 1:49:58Here's the pitch to Moose.
- 1:50:00He's hit on the first pitch.
- 1:50:02Scarrant is hit in the back.
- 1:50:04He's all right.
- 1:50:06He's cutting down the first base.
- 1:50:08Larson trying to pitch in tight to the Moose.
- 1:50:10They try to pitch him in on the fifth.
- 1:50:12Got this one in a little bit too close.
- 1:50:14And the Moose was hit.
- 1:50:16So the Yankees will have runners
- 1:50:18at first and third one out,
- 1:50:20and the batter will be Cleat Boyer.
- 1:50:22You'll see if this alters
- 1:50:24the Giants defense at all.
- 1:50:26It might be playing back here for the double play.
- 1:50:28Boyer
- 1:50:30both times has gone out on
- 1:50:32fly balls to Maze and center field.
- 1:50:34The last time up,
- 1:50:36he sent Willie deep in the center to get his fly ball.
- 1:50:40Two to nothing. The Yankees in front.
- 1:50:42They're still threatening here in the seventh inning.
- 1:50:44This was the scoreless ball game going into the inning.
- 1:50:46What singles by Tresh,
- 1:50:48Manel and Meras have added two runs.
- 1:50:54Which Giants are going to play their infield half way
- 1:50:56with runners at first and third?
- 1:50:58Here's the bitch.
- 1:51:00Ball outside, he got the curve off the corner.
- 1:51:02One ball, no strikes.
- 1:51:04Davenport is ready for a play at the plate.
- 1:51:06Sopeta is holding against the runner at first base.
- 1:51:08And Pagan and Hiller
- 1:51:10have moved back.
- 1:51:12They're playing about half way from their normal position.
- 1:51:18Here's the bitch.
- 1:51:20Outside, another curve breaking down and away.
- 1:51:22Ball two and no strikes.
- 1:51:30The pitcher,
- 1:51:32Stafford will be the next batter.
- 1:51:34So Larson is going to be careful with Boyer.
- 1:51:38He would rather not walk him to load the bases,
- 1:51:40but he had rather pitched to
- 1:51:42Stafford than Boyer in this spot.
- 1:51:44So it will be interesting to see how he pitches to Clee.
- 1:51:46So far he's been trying to get into the fight at a bad curve.
- 1:51:52Don gets up.
- 1:51:54Here's the 2-0 pitch.
- 1:51:56He swings and misses on a curve ball.
- 1:51:58Ball two and strike one.
- 1:52:04You can really see when he's doing that,
- 1:52:06Manel's point is directly behind home plate
- 1:52:08and he's really trying to get him into that curve ball
- 1:52:10because that's the double plate of ground ball
- 1:52:12which Larson has and so far.
- 1:52:14He's just been throwing nothing but breaking balls.
- 1:52:20Larson looking in.
- 1:52:22A lot of taking time in this situation.
- 1:52:24Here's the 2-1 pitch.
- 1:52:26A swing and a miss on a bad curve
- 1:52:28breaking down and away.
- 1:52:30That one was in the dirt.
- 1:52:32Boyer was going for it.
- 1:52:34So it's all even at two and two.
- 1:52:40A two to nothing ball game.
- 1:52:42The Yankees out in front.
- 1:52:44They're still threatening in the seventh.
- 1:52:46Runners at first and third with one out.
- 1:52:48Clee boy is about her with a ball two and a strike two count.
- 1:52:52Larson ready.
- 1:52:54The pitch.
- 1:52:56A ground ball to the shortstop.
- 1:52:58They're going for the double play.
- 1:53:00Back to first east safe.
- 1:53:02Killer juggles the ball at second base.
- 1:53:04Just long enough to enable Boyer to beat the play
- 1:53:06at Marist comes in with a third run of the inning.
- 1:53:12There's a big play at Roger Marist.
- 1:53:14Able to come over to third base on the fly ball
- 1:53:16hit by Alston Howard.
- 1:53:18He picked up the base where he scores on the
- 1:53:20fourth shot hit into by Boyer.
- 1:53:22Just at split second and he'll
- 1:53:24head for all the difference.
- 1:53:26Not only did the Yankees pick up a run but they
- 1:53:28have their picture coming up.
- 1:53:30If he does go out they won't have to
- 1:53:32lead him off in the eighth inning.
- 1:53:34Bill Stafford the batter.
- 1:53:36Boyer at first base with two down here on the seventh.
- 1:53:38The Yankees are in front three to nothing.
- 1:53:40There's a quick turn at first.
- 1:53:42Boyer back in town.
- 1:53:44I doubt that Boyer will be running
- 1:53:46in the spot.
- 1:53:48He'll be staying close to the bag.
- 1:53:50There's the bench.
- 1:53:52A swing and a miss on a curve ball.
- 1:53:54As Joe told you the Yankees
- 1:53:56do not want Stafford leading off in the eighth inning.
- 1:53:58Rather he'd bet right here.
- 1:54:00He's going to go for the third base
- 1:54:02and then he'll be in the third base.
- 1:54:04He's in the fourth inning.
- 1:54:06Rather he'd bet right here.
- 1:54:08Boyer beating the play at first base
- 1:54:10made it a big play in a lot of ways.
- 1:54:12It got the run in.
- 1:54:14It got Stafford to the plate.
- 1:54:16Here's the bench.
- 1:54:18Bill hits a ground ball to first base.
- 1:54:20Spada steps on the bag and the sides
- 1:54:22return.
- 1:54:24Three runs in the inning.
- 1:54:26Three runs on three hits.
- 1:54:28Two errors.
- 1:54:30So Yankees three and the Giants
- 1:54:32nothing.
- 1:54:34Bobby Richardson has been a World Series hero

- 1:55:44Well at the end of 7
- 1:55:46the Yankees have 3 runs on 5 hits.
- 1:55:48They've made one error.
- 1:55:50And the Giants have no runs on 1 hit
- 1:55:52and they've made 3 errors.
- 1:55:54You're excited about it
- 1:55:56if the three fellas have been real busy.
- 1:55:58The official scores who today are Bob Stevens
- 1:56:00at San Francisco Chronicle
- 1:56:02or Ray Kelly of the Philadelphia Bulletin
- 1:56:04and Tilt Fadenze of the New York General American.
- 1:56:10Here's Jose Pagán to lead off for the Giants
- 1:56:12in the eighth inning.
- 1:56:14Shark's got his bounce for second
- 1:56:16and foul to the catcher in two trips.
- 1:56:18He swings and lines at the left field.
- 1:56:20And the Yankees are out in front.
- 1:56:24The single by Pagán.
- 1:56:26Pagán.
- 1:56:28Pagán.
- 1:56:30Pagán.
- 1:56:32Pagán.
- 1:56:34Pagán.
- 1:56:36Pagán.
- 1:56:38Pagán.
- 1:56:40Pagán.
- 1:56:42Pagán.
- 1:56:44Pagán.
- 1:56:46Pagán.
- 1:56:48Pagán.
- 1:56:50Pagán.
- 1:56:52The second hit of Bill Stafford.
- 1:57:04One strike Gunlow.
- 1:57:06Penel uniform
- 1:57:09cannon
- 1:57:16at least one strike to try to get the base runner, but Stafford has walked two men over
- 1:57:20in the first inning, and they're just going up to, going to Whacken.
- 1:57:25Here's the pitch. He checked the swing in time, since Dan Lambs, one ball, one strike.
- 1:57:31That might have been what Stafford was thinking, Joe, is he just laid the fast ball in there
- 1:57:35on the first pitch to Fagann, and the little fellow just lined it in the left field.
- 1:57:40A lot of times that'll happen, and you think they're taken, and of course you give up the
- 1:57:44base hit, and then you switch the whole pitching pattern.
- 1:57:47Bill gets ready. Here's the one-one pitch. The ground ball to third. Boyer has it. Here's a throw to second.
- 1:57:52He's out. No chance for a double play, as Richardson was playing far to his right.
- 1:57:58In fact, he had quite a race to the back to beat Fagann over there.
- 1:58:03George, he was so far over for a minute, I thought Kupac was going to make the play.
- 1:58:07Boyer was in on the grass, guarding against the ball, you hit off the end of the bat,
- 1:58:11and when Alu hit the hot shot, he had that ball in plenty of time.
- 1:58:15Richardson, there was nothing he could do. Bobby had to protect that hole between post and second.
- 1:58:19He really had to come scouting and scampering to be there.
- 1:58:22Another thing, Joe, they were just making certain they got one runner, because you don't double Matty Alu anyway,
- 1:58:27unless he hits a shot right at you, and so they were going to be sure they got one man.
- 1:58:32Well, here's Faleepaloo. He's off a three this afternoon.
- 1:58:37Stafford delivers a curve, it's in there, one strike.
- 1:58:41Faleepaloo has learned to center, bounced a third, and fly to Merrickson right field.
- 1:58:47We're in the top of the eighth inning, the Giants have a runner at first place,
- 1:58:50with one out, the Yankees are leading, three to nothing.
- 1:58:54Here's the bench, a spall down low, a ball and a strike to Alu.
- 1:59:00This was a scoreless ball game until the seventh,
- 1:59:03the Yankees broke it open with three runs.
- 1:59:10Alu waiting, here's the one-one bench, outside, just off the corner with this one,
- 1:59:16ball two and strike one.
- 1:59:19Billy Pierce started on the mound for the Giants, and he was a great pitcher here this afternoon.
- 1:59:23He seemed to tire a little bit in the seventh inning.
- 1:59:26Three straight singles drove him out, Don Larson came on.
- 1:59:30Don Larson is out of the game for a pitch batter,
- 1:59:33and we'll have a new giant pitcher in the bottom of the eighth.
- 1:59:39The two-one pitch to Alu, he swings and lines it off the glove of Stafford, he picks it up,
- 1:59:44here's the throw, he's out.
- 1:59:47A line shot back to the middle and hit him on the leg, I believe.
- 1:59:50Stafford is limping around, he came off the mound,
- 1:59:54grabbed the ball through to Scowern in time to get Alu,
- 1:59:58as Maddie Alu moved down the second base,
- 2:00:01and here's the trainer of the Yankees coming out along with Ralph Hock,
- 2:00:04and the ball seemed to hit Stafford on the right leg, you know.
- 2:00:12The left leg, it is.
- 2:00:15The trainer is out, and he can hardly stand.
- 2:00:18George and Ralph Hock is just now asking to sit down,
- 2:00:21and he didn't look like he could hit him on the shin bone,
- 2:00:24the bullpen is in action, out in the right field corner, it was a low fastball,
- 2:00:28and Alu sent it right back up to middle,
- 2:00:31Stafford never did get his glove on it,
- 2:00:34hit him flush, and with that great competitive instinct,
- 2:00:37he just went right after that,
- 2:00:39the baseball made his put out at first base,
- 2:00:42of course Maddie Alu took second on the play,
- 2:00:44and after Stafford made the put out, he just went staggering around,
- 2:00:47and now he's seated right in the middle of the diamond as Ralph Hock,
- 2:00:51Joe Sturdy's a trainer, Moose Dowan Nelson Howard, look on.
- 2:01:00George, he may have to leave his ballgame.
- 2:01:03I'm very surprised, you know, if he is able to continue this game,
- 2:01:06taking a good long look at it, of course,
- 2:01:08Hock wants him to continue, if he can't at all,
- 2:01:11he's been a tremendous pitcher this afternoon.
- 2:01:14The thing you worry about, more than anything,
- 2:01:16is if he's pitching with the bad leg, it's his follow through,
- 2:01:19he wants to stay in, he's going to take a shot at it,
- 2:01:22and he'll be watching as he is followed through,
- 2:01:24because you said they don't want to have him stably in it,
- 2:01:27anything, which where the injury to the leg could have put his arm,
- 2:01:33so they're not watching as he warps up, he's just cut loose a fastball,
- 2:01:37Hock is standing right there in the middle of the mound, he's watching him.
- 2:01:41If he can throw any harder than that, they may start him tomorrow.
- 2:01:45He's really blazing it in there now,
- 2:01:47as if to prove to Hock that he wants to stay in there.
- 2:01:52Well, he's going to continue in this ball game.
- 2:02:00It pains him, it hurts him, we're pulling out talking to him.
- 2:02:04It hurts him now, but it's going to hurt even more in the morning when he wakes up.
- 2:02:08Oh, I don't think he'll make it to the dancing time, George.
- 2:02:11No, if he was going to the dance tonight, he'll have to call it off, that's out.
- 2:02:18Well, we're still having a conference at the mound, four years there, along with Scowren,
- 2:02:22and they're just checking with him to be sure, and he says, yes sir, I'm going to finish.
- 2:02:27George, you've been in enough of those conversations, but it's always the same,
- 2:02:30you ask the fellas, they were out of your field, and he says it hurts.
- 2:02:32What do you think of them, the field?
- 2:02:34With the wind dry, what can he tell you?
- 2:02:37He's got a little bit of a scuba now.
- 2:02:41You like these pitchers, Joe, they don't want to come out of there,
- 2:02:44and I don't believe he's going to be able to continue.
- 2:02:47Just as he gets ready to pitch, he says he wants some more warm-up tosses,
- 2:02:50and I don't think he's going to be able.
- 2:02:53He is limping around the mound, like he's going to have to have some help yet.
- 2:02:59Well, I don't know.
- 2:03:01I really watch him from the turnout, he's going to stay in, you've got to go for it,
- 2:03:06particularly staying because the mound is really no place for the heroes,
- 2:03:10and if he's able to go, that's what they want.
- 2:03:14Chuck Hiller is stepping in, the giants have a runner in second base,
- 2:03:18there's two outs here in the eighth inning, the Yankees out in front, three to nothing.
- 2:03:22Here's the pitch to Hiller, curve ball, it's down low, one ball and a strike.
- 2:03:32There's action in the Yankee bullpen, but we cannot see the bullpen from here.
- 2:03:38Here's the one in O-pitch, curve inside, a ball to it and a strike count.
- 2:03:47To and on to Chuck Hiller, Willie Mays is in the on-deck circle, the Yankees want to keep Hiller off,
- 2:03:53Mays will be the tying run, here's a ground ball to second base,
- 2:03:56Richardson has it, the first, he's out.
- 2:04:03Go around, one hit, the women were out, one down, one out, one down,
- 2:04:07first half of the eighth inning, the Yankees three and the giants nothing.
- 2:04:11You know many of the players work with young players in the off-season,
- 2:04:15for instance, Maury Wills plays a lot of basketball with high school of jizz,
- 2:04:19and as he says when those boys start to shave, I tell them there's nothing like the Gillette way.
- 2:04:24Millions of men, the Gillette way, need super blue blades.
- 2:04:27Every day more and more men are discovering the all but unbelievable shaving comfort on super blues.
- 2:04:33An exclusive Gillette process makes their edges so cheap, so smooth they whisk off the heaviest beard,
- 2:04:39like it wasn't even there.
- 2:04:41Quick clean shave, really refreshing.
- 2:04:44A dispenser is included with a new Gillette Slam adjustable razor,
- 2:04:47and the Slam is wider, longer and trimmer, and it's adjustable to match your skin and beard.
- 2:04:53Now the Gillette World Series Special includes the Slam adjustable and super blue blades,
- 2:04:58blast a 79 cent can of Comey Instant Lather for only $1.95.
- 2:05:03It's a 225 value, so you save 34 cents.
- 2:05:08Let's pause here 30 seconds for a station identification.
- 2:05:13This is WGY's Connected E.
- 2:05:15You know it's amazing how a major league team can snap back fast when it's down.
- 2:05:19When you're feeling down, you too can snap right back with a cold sparkling refresher,
- 2:05:23Saratoga Vichy, instant pygmy up tang so titleizing it's delicious all by itself.
- 2:05:28And Saratoga's naturally livelier spring fresh flavor adds zip life and sparkle to every mixed drink.
- 2:05:35So for that finger snapping, toe tapping, taste and feeling, be sure it's Saratoga Vichy with the yellow label.
- 2:05:42Bob Bowen is coming in to pitch for the San Francisco Giants. This is a big hard throw on right hand.
- 2:05:50Really a rear back and farm guy. He comes on third base when the right hand hitters are up there.
- 2:05:56He'll make them give ground. His best pitch is a great fastball, a side-heimer.
- 2:06:01George, the attendance here today is 71,434, which is a complete sellout here at Yankee Stadium.
- 2:06:08Just got word too from the bullpen that Yankees have Jim Colts a right hander and Bud Daly warming up while a Bill Stafford is being treated in the dugout
- 2:06:19after getting wrecked up on his shins by the line drive hit by a loop.
- 2:06:23Bob Bowen has just completed his warm-ups and this is a hard throw on right hander.
- 2:06:28You're telling me it's a sellout, Joe. I forgot to get a ticket from a wife. She came in last night and I thought she was going to sit right here by you today.
- 2:06:34If she had gotten her ticket about noon, I wouldn't have been here. It is a sellout.
- 2:06:40Boy, you usually find a ticket somewhere around but not this morning.
- 2:06:44There's Tony Cuback to lead off. Bowen delivers strike. He got the fastball over.
- 2:06:50A one strike count.
- 2:06:53Tony's had one hit in three trips. That was a double back in the third inning.
- 2:06:58It's a three to nothing ball game here in the bottom of the eighth inning. The pitch he swings and misses on a fastball two strikes.
- 2:07:06Three runs on five hits in one error for the Yankees.
- 2:07:10Giants have no runs on two hits. They've made three errors.
- 2:07:19Here's the two strike, bitch. A high pop fly behind second base.
- 2:07:24First killer waiting on him. He's got it. There's one away.
- 2:07:28Tony Cuback pops to the second baseman.
- 2:07:32Bring up Bobby Richardson.
- 2:07:34Bobby's looking for his first hit today. He's fly to right.
- 2:07:38Line to first and bounce to the shortstop in three trips.
- 2:07:47Bobby, a right-handed batter.
- 2:07:51Bowen delivers ball. It's in tight. One ball and no strikes.
- 2:07:57Bottom of the eighth inning. One out with no one on. The Yankees three and the Giants nothing.
- 2:08:03It's all important third ball game. Here's the pitch.
- 2:08:08There's a high pop fly in the shallow left center field. May's racing in along with a loop.
- 2:08:13And Willie Mays makes the cut.
- 2:08:16Bobby Richardson out on the fly to center. Two down and the batter will be Tom Price.
- 2:08:29Tommy will be batting left-handed for the first time today.
- 2:08:38Switch hitter. He batted right-handed against Billy Pierce.
- 2:08:41Here's the pitch. Outside. One ball and no strikes.
- 2:08:47The Yankees have out-hit the Giants five to two.
- 2:08:51The Giants chipped in with two big errors in the three run seventh inning.
- 2:08:56Here's the one and no pitch. A swing at him is.
- 2:09:00He plays the fast ball by one ball, one strike.
- 2:09:06Billy Pierce started for the Giants. Larson relieved him in the seventh. Bob Bowlin coming on here in the eighth inning.
- 2:09:16Here's the one and one pitch. Trash swings and misses again. One ball, two strikes.
- 2:09:25Tommy really having a couple of ripples at those last two fast balls.
- 2:09:35He's got a little bit of a run to the wind up.
- 2:09:38Just as he gets ready, the umpire landers falls ten.
- 2:09:43It looks like a kite, Joe, is floating in the outfield.
- 2:09:47Exactly what it is. Hank Saw called time. He thought the kite was kind of land and it just kept taking off.
- 2:09:53But now it's floating around and 71,000 people here at Yankee City are watching the kite land.
- 2:10:00The ground steeper had to grab it and land it right on to leave the loop.
- 2:10:10Well, in way and resume, Tommy Trash will be the batter with a one ball, two strike.
- 2:10:20We're ready to go as Tommy steps back in. Here's the pitch from Bowlin.
- 2:10:25He's in misses. Here's a fast ball by Trash.
- 2:10:31Now round the snow hits, now there's no one left.
- 2:10:34The story of the eighth ball innings of play. The Yankees three and the Giants nothing.
- 2:10:37Now we've seen some great third base play in this World Series from Boyer and Davenport.
- 2:10:41And one of the best rookie third basements around today is Rich Rollins of Minnesota.
- 2:10:46You'll be hearing from him for years to come and here's a sample on tape.
- 2:10:50I'm bringing my patient shape to the set with Gillette Super Blue Blades. They do the job at no time at all.
- 2:10:55They're smooth, they're...
- 2:10:58Richy repeats what men everywhere say about the Super Blue Blade.
- 2:11:02An exclusive Gillette process gives the magic so clean, so smooth, you'd almost think there was no blade in your range.
- 2:11:09Quick, plain, easy shave you have to experience to believe.
- 2:11:13And Super Blues are double edge for extra convenience.
- 2:11:16Every shave per blade. For the utmost in shaving comfort, try them on the new Gillette Slam Adjustable Razer.
- 2:11:22Now it's lighter, it's longer and more compact. And it adjusts to your skin and beard.
- 2:11:27Right now you get both the Slam Razer and Super Blue Blades.
- 2:11:31Plus a 79 cent can of foamy instant leather as a Gillette World Series Special.
- 2:11:37Now this $2.29 value is yours for only $1.95. You save 34 cents.
- 2:11:43Well here's Willie Mays to lead off for the Giants in the ninth inning.
- 2:11:47It'll be Mays McCovey and Sepeta, racing Bill Stafford.
- 2:11:53It will be interesting Joe to watch Bill to see if the leg is tightened up a little during the resty head.
- 2:12:01A 3 to nothing ball game, the Yankees are out in front.
- 2:12:08Willie has popped to the shortstop, rounded the short and called out on strikes in three trips today.
- 2:12:16Here's the first pitch, a curve lying to left field, this one's in there.
- 2:12:20Trash racing over knocks it down, here's Mays headed for seconds as well coming in.
- 2:12:25It's going to be Closie safe in seconds.
- 2:12:30Willie Mays, Lions run, into the corner in left field.
- 2:12:38More than likely it'll be a two base hit, Trash bobbled the ball for just a moment.
- 2:12:43It's a two base hit for Willie Mays.
- 2:12:47Willie was really stood around, he didn't want to stay in front of the base, he only wanted to get in the score position and stay away from that double play situation.
- 2:12:55Here's Willie McCovey, big left handed batter.
- 2:12:58A ground ball hit to the second base.
- 2:13:01Bobby, bobbled the ball, here's the third of first, he is out.
- 2:13:06Bobby Richardson, fumbled the ball for a moment, made a quick throw to Bill Scowren.
- 2:13:12He got McCovey by half step at first base.
- 2:13:16Willie Mays moves along the third with one out, a batter will be Sepeta.
- 2:13:22Bobby fumbled the ball, he was going to pick it up, he had an easy play but he couldn't find it for a moment.
- 2:13:28Had to take two grabs at it, and by then McCovey was closing in on first base but he got him on a close play.
- 2:13:36So a runner at third, one out, here's our lamb, no Sepeta.
- 2:13:41Stafford delivers a curve, he pops it up into shallow right field.
- 2:13:45Mays is coming in, waiting on him, Mays is tagging, I doubt he'll come in, here's a throw and Willie goes back.
- 2:13:52No use in Willie taking a chance as his run means nothing unless they can get two more.
- 2:13:58So Sepeta is out on a fly ball and the shallow right, there's two down, and the batter will be Ed Bailey.
- 2:14:06The Yankees lead by three, here in the top of the ninth inning.
- 2:14:10He's going to be the last one to go in that corner, he's going to be the last one.
- 2:14:15Ed Bailey, left handed hitting catcher step again.
- 2:14:20Stafford into the line up, here's the bench, there's a long draw to right field, Mays going deep, way back it's gone, a home run for Bailey.
- 2:14:50Ed Bailey hit a line and drive into the seats in right field, Mays waits back and he's been able to get there in time, he could have caught the ball, it just did get in.
- 2:15:07But it was a low liner, just out of his reach into the seats.
- 2:15:11So it's a three to two ball game, the Yankees leading and the batter is Jim Davenport.
- 2:15:20Two offs in the top of the ninth inning.
- 2:15:24Here's a fix to Davenport, a curve ball, it's two halfs, one ball and a strike.
- 2:15:33The Giants have picked up two here in the top of the ninth inning to cut the Yankee lead to one.
- 2:15:39Stafford delivers, here's a fly ball foul up to the right.
- 2:15:44One ball, one strike.
- 2:15:51The Giants making a last ditch effort to keep it alive here in the ninth and Bill Stafford trying to get them out.
- 2:15:58A double and a home run and they picked up two.
- 2:16:02Here's the one one pitch, curve it's in the dirt.
- 2:16:05Ball two and strike one to Davenport.
- 2:16:09Alondac is motion to his bullpen, he wants big Tom Haller, the left-handed catcher to come on over there,
- 2:16:14use him as a pinch shooter.
- 2:16:17And that'll probably bring Marshall Bridges, Louis Saroya or Bud Daley, if we get the left-handed batter if Davenport gets on.
- 2:16:25Here's the bench, here's a high fly ball to left field, this may be the ball game.
- 2:16:29Tommy Trash is waiting on it, he's waiting, he's got it, the ball game.
- 2:16:35Davenport, nice to left, two runs in the ninth inning, hang on two hits, no errors, no unleft.
- 2:16:41And the final score of this ball game, the Yankees three and the Giants two,
- 2:16:46we'll be back in just one moment to review the highlights of the game for you.
- 2:16:50Well we've seen some great shortstop play so far in the series from Paghan and Cubak,
- 2:16:55one of the best in the business is Dick Rodefriaritz, here's what Dick thinks of the new Gillette Slam adjustable racer.
- 2:17:02Is your first experience with the adjustable dick? No, I've been adjustable users from the start, but the new slim is even better,
- 2:17:09it's easier to handle, it seems to get at those hard to reach areas.
- 2:17:13Well Dick is right and only the Gillette adjustable has the precision dial with nine different positions.
- 2:17:18One gives you just the right blade setting for your skin and beard.
- 2:17:22The new slim is a streamline razor, it's wider, longer for better balance,
- 2:17:27and with it you get a supply of double-edged super blue blades.
- 2:17:30The Gillette Discovery, millions upon millions of men, find unparallel for shaving comfort.
- 2:17:36Right now on the Gillette World Series Special, you get the slim adjustable and super blues with a 79 cent can of Gillette homey instant lather at a 34 cent saving.
- 2:17:47It's a 229 value and it's yours for only a dollar and ninety-five.
- 2:17:52Well Joe, it was a great ball game here today, the Yankees have taken a two to one lead and you've got the highlights for us.
- 2:17:58Another real fine pitching afternoon, whole series so far in the first game, the 6-2 win, Whitey Ford,
- 2:18:06and so Darrell Ford was jumped in the second ball game to nothing, the Giants one of three hit it by Sanford, and here this afternoon Billy Pierce and Bill Sanford really hooked up in a pitching goal.
- 2:18:18It wasn't until a seventh inning, in fact the Yankees had run into a streak of 15 scoreless innings.
- 2:18:24Billy Pierce in the seventh inning ran into three runs and that was the old ball game as far as the scoring was concerned with the Yankees.
- 2:18:32And the way that scoring went, Tom Tresh in that seventh inning opened it up with a single or center field.
- 2:18:37It looked for a minute like Willie Mays might be able to make a play, it dropped in for a base hit, Willie played it on the first hop,
- 2:18:43and then Mickey Mell, and Bill won in the left field.
- 2:18:46Tom Tresh looked like he was thinking about stopping at second base and then shifted here, he moved on over into third base,
- 2:18:53and then the ball took a bit of a bad hop, a high hop to our low, and his throw after handling a high hop was off,
- 2:19:00and then a target at third base, and Tresh went in sliding, and Mell took second, so it was second and third,
- 2:19:06and Roger Merris, and then Bill won the first pitch to right field, driving in two.
- 2:19:11William McCurvy didn't come up with the ball clean, he bobbled it, and Merris took second base.
- 2:19:16Then there was a key play, it turns out to be the big one, and that was where the Yankees started to put the little things together.
- 2:19:24Elston Howard, flying to Willie Mays in short right center field, and Roger Merris at second base,
- 2:19:31tagged up and literally dared Willie Mays to throw him out at third base.
- 2:19:36Mays's throw was not on target, and Merris went sliding in to third base safely.
- 2:19:42Scowne was then hit with a pitched ball, we had a first and third situation,
- 2:19:48and then Boyer hit a ground ball to the shortstop for Garn.
- 2:19:52Here's Flip to Hillard at second base, Hillard juggled it just enough to miss the play at first base,
- 2:19:59and Roger Merris came across the score with a third run.
- 2:20:03Bill Stafford then ended the inning by grounding out to Orlando Sapeida.
- 2:20:07So it was three runs for the Yankees on three hits, there were two errors,
- 2:20:10but the big play in that inning turns out to be Roger Merris taking third on the fly ball hit by Elston Howard,
- 2:20:16and scoring as Boyer hits to a fourth play, because these Giants came rolling back with two runs in the top of the night,
- 2:20:23that was a double by Ed Bailey, and then a home run by Willie Mays and a home run by Ed Bailey.
- 2:20:31The line score for the Yankees, three runs, five hits and one error, Stafford was the winning pitcher,
- 2:20:38two runs, four hits and three errors with Pierce the losing pitcher.
- 2:20:42Bill Stafford had real good control all afternoon, in fact only two Giants had reached the third base up until that ninth inning,
- 2:20:50that was Devon Wood in the second, and then Mays was the second man in that ninth inning,
- 2:20:55and of course Bailey with this big home run.
- 2:20:57So the second game is now history, the Yankees have taken one game lead here as they win it three to two.
- 2:21:03Our engineer this afternoon has been Harry Alexander, our producer has been Len Dylan.
- 2:21:10You've been sure to tune in again tomorrow afternoon at 12.45, with George Kelly and I'll be back right here at Yankee Stadium,
- 2:21:1912.45 Eastern Daylight Time for the fourth game of this exciting 1962 World Series,
- 2:21:26brought to you by Priceway Corporation and the Gillette Safety Laser Company.
- 2:21:31Once again the score hit this afternoon, the Yankees three, the San Francisco Giants two.
- 2:21:37This has been an NBC Radio Network production.
