- 0:39SPEAKER_02: Welcome in everybody to the Talk of Tech Podcast, powered by Guns Up Nation, part of the Guns Up Nation Podcast Network.
- 0:46SPEAKER_02: I am your host, Steven Rodriguez, my co-host Tristan McGonagall.
- 0:49SPEAKER_02: Tristan, Mad Wells has been fired.
- 0:53SPEAKER_02: Well, I guess one could say this was quite the weekend, not very short on news now, was it?
- 1:00SPEAKER_02: No, not quite at all.
- 1:02SPEAKER_02: Uh, we should warn you, this is our third time trying to record this episode.
- 1:07SPEAKER_02: Uh, I don't know what's been going on, but there's been some audio issues.
- 1:11SPEAKER_02: We would have got this podcast out much sooner, but it's coming out.
- 1:14SPEAKER_02: Hopefully, this one works out.
- 1:16SPEAKER_01: But yes, that's if if if if you don't if you don't like this episode, the better one was recorded before.
- 1:22SPEAKER_01: Just keep that in mind, okay?
- 1:24SPEAKER_02: Keep keep that in mind here.
- 1:26SPEAKER_02: Uh, but no, this we need to talk about the big news.
- 1:28SPEAKER_02: Matt Wells is no longer the coach at Texas Tech University.
- 1:33SPEAKER_02: Um, it was a shock.
- 1:35SPEAKER_02: The timing at least was a shock.
- 1:38SPEAKER_02: Uh, after the Kansas State meltdown, we all kind of saw the writing on the wall.
- 1:44SPEAKER_02: We just were a little uh a little surprised by the timing of it that it happened, not during the bye week, not even, you know, just kind of before the OU week, just randomly on a Monday.
- 1:55SPEAKER_02: So, uh, what were your first thoughts initially when you saw the news?
- 1:58SPEAKER_01: I was shocked.
- 1:59SPEAKER_01: I like you just said, I was really surprised by the timing.
- 2:03SPEAKER_01: I really didn't think that we would fire a head coach in the middle of a football season.
- 2:09SPEAKER_01: Um, so that that really caught me off guard.
- 2:11SPEAKER_01: But wherever you put it in context, wherever you look at the record, you look at how we lost, you look at how we even won when I think about it.
- 2:19SPEAKER_01: Uh, it's really not as surprising anymore, especially with the Kansas State loss.
- 2:24SPEAKER_01: It was definitely the straw that broke the camel back to use a cliche.
- 2:29SPEAKER_01: That Kansas State game, we had zero excuse losing.
- 2:34SPEAKER_01: Uh, the Kansas State didn't play well.
- 2:36SPEAKER_01: Uh, we dominate the first half and then somehow just absolutely bloat in the second without scoring a single point.
- 2:44SPEAKER_01: And we let Kansas State beat us by one.
- 2:47SPEAKER_01: Uh, a bad Kansas State team, a Kansas State team that's in the same situation as we were, being pissed off at our head coach, but clearly they made the better hire, as always.
- 2:57SPEAKER_01: And we here we are in the situation, head coachless with the uh interim in the protocol sun that is Sonny Cumbie.
- 3:04SPEAKER_01: Uh, it's just it's a whirlwind to be a red raider.
- 3:07SPEAKER_01: You and I started this podcast at quite the time.
- 3:11SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no doubt.
- 3:12SPEAKER_02: Uh, this was a wild weekend to say the least.
- 3:16SPEAKER_02: Um, the the thing about it is, you know, we we were never pro Matt Wells necessarily.
- 3:25SPEAKER_02: We never liked the product that was on the field, we didn't appreciate the coaching uh at at a lot of times.
- 3:33SPEAKER_02: But the thing was we always rooted for him and we wanted him to succeed.
- 3:37SPEAKER_02: Uh, I think a lot of people were out on him much uh earlier than when we were finally out of it.
- 3:43SPEAKER_02: And and that was the turning point was this weekend was when we finally, you know, both you and me just decided he's just not it.
- 3:51SPEAKER_02: We need to, we need to move on from him.
- 3:53SPEAKER_02: We wanted to give him his deserved time to turn around what he's already shown us, and it didn't work out.
- 4:00SPEAKER_02: He just wasn't uh we weren't moving on, and and uh, you know, we we felt kind of caged as fans watching this team on a week-to-week basis because you know, you go in and you want your team to win, but you also don't see any way that Matt Wells is the guy for your program that's gonna succeed for you.
- 4:21SPEAKER_02: And uh, you know, this is kind of a sigh of relief.
- 4:24SPEAKER_02: You're finally let out of this cage, and it's it's all it's an optimistic feeling.
- 4:29SPEAKER_02: Where I feel optimistic about this program now that Matt Wells is no longer the head coach.
- 4:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah, oddly enough, it's a breath of fresh air.
- 4:38SPEAKER_01: You know, this has always been a very pro Texas Tech podcast for unsure reasons.
- 4:44SPEAKER_01: Uh, I guess we do we cover exclusively Texas Tech sports.
- 4:47SPEAKER_01: Maybe that's it.
- 4:48SPEAKER_01: But um, basically, you and I were team Matt Wells because we wanted us to see some wins, we wanted to see this program succeed.
- 4:54SPEAKER_01: We liked Matt Wells, the man, he's a good family man, he represented the university pretty well.
- 4:59SPEAKER_01: Um, but you and I have been we've we've been trying so hard to remain team wells, but it eventually just got harder and harder.
- 5:06SPEAKER_01: And this past weekend was when you and I eventually defected.
- 5:09SPEAKER_01: Like you could tell on our Twitter pages that you and I we expressed our absolute disappointment in the product we were seeing.
- 5:18SPEAKER_01: It's rare that you and I absolutely lean into the negativity, uh, like because, like I said, we're very optimistic.
- 5:26SPEAKER_01: But it's kind of interesting to see that you and I's breaking point was also the breaking point in the athletic department.
- 5:32SPEAKER_01: Kirby Hocut pulled the boldest move he could by firing a coach midseason.
- 5:37SPEAKER_01: Uh, I really didn't think a uh a school like Texas Tech would do so.
- 5:40SPEAKER_01: I thought we would give him a chance to recoup his season, maybe give him another shot, audition for the job for one more season.
- 5:47SPEAKER_01: But whenever you look at history, I think that's what the season was to begin with, because a lot of people wanted him gone last season in the COVID year when he only won four games, yet again.
- 5:58SPEAKER_01: Remember, he only won four games in his first season.
- 6:01SPEAKER_01: In his first season, he did the biggest cardinal sin you can as a Big 12 coach and lose to Kansas.
- 6:08SPEAKER_01: So he we only in the we walk out of that season with one with only four wins, a downgrade from Cliff Kingsbury because you're looking for that upgrade immediately.
- 6:17SPEAKER_01: But he's shown that he's not showing enough progress to believe in them any longer.
- 6:22SPEAKER_01: So I'm glad that we went ahead and and built up the cojones to just go ahead and rip the band aid off.
- 6:28SPEAKER_01: Because, as Kirby Hoke had said, this was inevitable that no matter what Matt Matt Wells would have done for the rest of the season, save go undefeated.
- 6:37SPEAKER_01: Uh, he was never gonna win the fans back.
- 6:39SPEAKER_01: And there was really no reason to believe that he was gonna take this this team to the next level, which is what he was hired for.
- 6:46SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I mean, after each individual loss this season, it felt like he lost another portion of the fan base, another percentage.
- 6:52SPEAKER_02: Here it goes 10 more of the fans are now anti-Matt Wells, 10 more.
- 6:57SPEAKER_02: And you know, by by the Kansas State game, we kind of felt like we were the only ones that weren't calling for his job.
- 7:04SPEAKER_02: You know, we were like in that that five to ten percent that weren't calling for his job.
- 7:09SPEAKER_02: And then after Kansas State, you know, we eventually decided, hey, you know, he's just not the guy.
- 7:14SPEAKER_02: He's uh we put out a few tweets from the pods account that was uh just kind of like, you know, we tried to hold off as long as we could.
- 7:22SPEAKER_02: We wanted to give him a fair chance, but it's just not working out.
- 7:26SPEAKER_02: And uh we actually had a uh fun interaction with a uh uh Texas Tech coach who who decided to respond to us and a couple other loyal fans on Twitter.
- 7:36SPEAKER_02: He was just uh not having it with the tech fan base after that loss.
- 7:40SPEAKER_02: And uh, you know, it's it's it's funny uh because we saw what tech Twitter can really do when they attack the fans and when they kind of clap back a little bit.
- 7:51SPEAKER_02: And we appreciate the support from everybody, you know, everybody was kind of on our side with that sort of deal.
- 7:56SPEAKER_02: And so uh, but you know, as a coach, you just can't do that.
- 8:00SPEAKER_02: You gotta know better.
- 8:01SPEAKER_02: Uh, you your voice has more meaning than our voice, especially when it comes to social media.
- 8:09SPEAKER_02: And so, you know, when you start clapping back at the fans, you really just lose the fan base.
- 8:14SPEAKER_02: I mean, it's not working out.
- 8:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah, a huge thank you to our podcasting family and Guns Up Nation Podcast Network, tortillas and takes and rambling raiders being there backing us up on that because it was it is kind of funny whenever they he's pointing, he's like targeting us, some of the most optimistic Texas Tech guys out there.
- 8:32SPEAKER_01: Um, and it's just really ironic that way.
- 8:35SPEAKER_01: So, thank y'all so much for having our back.
- 8:37SPEAKER_01: And it it's kind of been repeated amongst any Texas Tech media that's talking about that guy tweeting at us and talking and tweeting at Tectina.
- 8:45SPEAKER_01: Um, is that really shows that there was some maybe some writing on the wall.
- 8:49SPEAKER_01: Maybe Matt Wells really was losing control of his staff because the staff was also losing their minds that we're losing every single game that we shouldn't be, or we're being blown out of these games that we shouldn't be.
- 9:00SPEAKER_01: We should be competitive at this point.
- 9:01SPEAKER_01: You know, it's it's year three, it's the most important year of his career at Texas Tech, and every single opportunity he's had to blow in it, he has.
- 9:11SPEAKER_01: Uh, maybe outside of say Houston and West Virginia, but even though is maybe the Houston win is pretty impressive at this point, but I think the Kooks would smoke us right now, and uh, I think we got them on an early uh mishap week, but and but West Virginia is just no good.
- 9:26SPEAKER_01: Neil Brown's probably right behind Matt Wells in a bit, so it's it's just it whenever you think about it, it's just it's time, it's time to move on.
- 9:34SPEAKER_01: The timing's perfect because now you can just close the chapter.
- 9:38SPEAKER_01: You don't give Matt Wells the opportunity to save his job, and I think that's really important.
- 9:44SPEAKER_01: You don't want to be in this program limbo where a coach squeaks out a win that he probably shouldn't have, takes you to the bowl, and whether he wins or loses, he's proven on his resume that he's improved from four wins each the past two seasons.
- 10:00SPEAKER_01: But as a proud football program like Texas Tech, you can't even use those four win seasons as a bar of you need to do better than that.
- 10:08SPEAKER_01: We want better than six wins.
- 10:10SPEAKER_01: So this this was the time.
- 10:11SPEAKER_01: Matt Wells was showing that he wasn't the guy.
- 10:14SPEAKER_01: So I'm really proud of the athletic department of just pulling the trigger.
- 10:18SPEAKER_02: Well, and it's not like we didn't give him the opportunity to change the season around.
- 10:22SPEAKER_02: He had plenty of that, you know.
- 10:23SPEAKER_02: We we with a performance like what we put out on the field against UT, I mean, that's really bad.
- 10:30SPEAKER_02: And then you have a chance to turn around and you do well against West Virginia, but then you have another terrible game against TCU, and then you beat Kansas, and then you have another terrible win or loss against Kansas State.
- 10:43SPEAKER_02: And it's like, come on, man, there's no consistency with a Matt Wells coached team, and so and we even saw that all the way back to Utah State.
- 10:53SPEAKER_02: You know, he had up and down seasons all through there, too.
- 10:56SPEAKER_02: So uh again, Matt Wells is a fine dude.
- 10:59SPEAKER_02: He's a good, he's a good guy, he's a good leader.
- 11:02SPEAKER_02: The players liked playing for him, but he clearly wasn't the wasn't ready.
- 11:07SPEAKER_02: He wasn't uh he wasn't the guy to lead this Texas Tech program.
- 11:11SPEAKER_02: And hopefully moving forward, we can finally find that guy.
- 11:15SPEAKER_02: Uh, but yeah, you know, the the this is just a wild weekend, man.
- 11:19SPEAKER_02: It was I I never suspected at the beginning of the year that we would fire Matt Wells midseason.
- 11:25SPEAKER_02: I always thought, you know, third year, you gotta at least give the guy three years, right?
- 11:30SPEAKER_02: But uh the writing was on the wall uh during that UT game.
- 11:33SPEAKER_02: And even you could go back to probably the previous years and even the SFA game earlier this year.
- 11:38SPEAKER_02: I mean, it's just like uh dude showed no sense of the ability to stay consistent and be competitive in this league.
- 11:48SPEAKER_02: And uh I think Kirby noticed that too, and that's why he made that decision.
- 11:52SPEAKER_01: I struggle to even use the word consistency.
- 11:54SPEAKER_01: I almost think it's incompetency because you know the guy never blew out an FCS team.
- 11:59SPEAKER_01: Every single FCS game was close.
- 12:01SPEAKER_01: We thought we're gonna lose, like Texas Tech, no matter how bad we are, we don't lose to FCS teams, and he was the closest we've ever been.
- 12:08SPEAKER_01: So, and that's that that is unacceptable.
- 12:11SPEAKER_01: And I'm surprised he put Kansas away like he did, especially with the way they played against OU this past weekend.
- 12:17SPEAKER_01: Um, and Kirby Hoke has a big challenge ahead of him.
- 12:21SPEAKER_01: You know, this this was his hire.
- 12:23SPEAKER_01: He went on this on his own accord, and he wasn't listening to anybody except for a guy.
- 12:28SPEAKER_01: Maybe I mean, maybe I'm just inferring this, but I'm pretty sure he hired Matt Wells because uh Venables turned down the job.
- 12:38SPEAKER_01: Because in Venables was the one that told him, watch out for this guy, this young coach out of Utah State.
- 12:44SPEAKER_01: And I know he's your roommate, and you have a high like a really high respect for the guy, but if he turns down the job and then tells you to hire somebody else, do you really want to listen to who he just told you to hire instead of the guy that doesn't want the job?
- 12:58SPEAKER_01: I I just I find that hard to believe.
- 13:01SPEAKER_01: And from the beginning, I've never seen a more fractured Texas Tech fan base with the hire because with Cliff Kingsbury, Unity was never the issue.
- 13:10SPEAKER_01: Literally, every single person wanted Cliff Kingsbury to be the guy.
- 13:14SPEAKER_01: Whenever you bring on Matt Wells, it's hard to say how many people wanted him to succeed.
- 13:18SPEAKER_01: A lot of people were actively rooting him for him to fail, or at least they just wanted their own confirmation to be confirmed, like their own biases to be confirmed with how he wasn't going to succeed.
- 13:28SPEAKER_01: Um, so I think the biggest issue with Kirby Hokutt's next hire is hiring a guy that unifies the fan base that people can believe in.
- 13:37SPEAKER_01: And I just I don't think from the start Matt Wells was ever that guy.
- 13:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and I think this this kind of boils down to I mean, Kirby hasn't made a good football hire, he just hasn't at the at the power five level.
- 13:49SPEAKER_02: He's now 0 for three, uh, going back to Miami too.
- 13:52SPEAKER_02: And and he's 0 for 2 at Texas Tech.
- 13:54SPEAKER_02: And uh, you know, now they're kind of switching uh from basically just Kirby making the decision with some influence to a committee making this decision uh after after Matt Wells and finding the next guy because uh they announced it at Kirby's press conference that it's gonna be a committee of him, uh Dusty Womble, you know, uh great great uh benefit and uh um donor to this school.
- 14:22SPEAKER_02: Uh gonna have his name on two different practice facilities here pretty soon.
- 14:26SPEAKER_02: Uh Cody Campbell, former Texas Tech great uh football player, businessman, uh Sammy Morris, former uh Texas Tech football player again, and uh uh currently on the staff as a player development guy.
- 14:38SPEAKER_02: And then Tony Hernandez as well is gonna be on this committee to make a suggestion to President Skovinek uh to hire, uh give give their best option to hire for the next Texas Tech coach, and then they take it from there.
- 14:53SPEAKER_02: But uh I think that's good.
- 14:55SPEAKER_02: Uh I think Kirby has not, he's shown a lot of good at Texas Tech as the athletic director.
- 15:01SPEAKER_02: He's he's upgraded a lot of our programs up to the highest level we've really seen them, uh, you know, in baseball and basketball.
- 15:09SPEAKER_02: Um, but he really hasn't done a great job when it comes to football.
- 15:13SPEAKER_02: And uh so I'm glad we're getting some more heads in on this, more opinions, um uh just to make the right decision.
- 15:21SPEAKER_02: I think that's the best choice here.
- 15:23SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 15:24SPEAKER_01: And no matter how you slice it and dice it, in the in the college sporting world, college football is the most important sport for your athletic department.
- 15:32SPEAKER_01: It's it's the money maker, it's what brings the most eyes to the campus.
- 15:37SPEAKER_01: So, in a sense, your college football program reflects what people perceive your entire university to be if you're at that level.
- 15:45SPEAKER_01: Um, because you'll you hear a lot of people giving TechStech flack for not being a desired destination because of how bad the football has been, even though we are arguably a national powerhouse in baseball at this point, and basketball has been an absolute firework, just lighting off these past couple of years.
- 16:04SPEAKER_01: So it but no matter how good those sports are, the total national respect isn't tied up into a bow until you put together a competent football program.
- 16:14SPEAKER_01: And uh it would be a different story if we put together constant bowl season, uh season runs, but we've only outperformed Kansas in the Big 12 this entire time, and that is unacceptable for Texas Tech University.
- 16:30SPEAKER_01: You are in a conference with Kansas, Kansas State, Iowa State, and just these programs that have inherent disadvantages against yours, but you still find somehow to not even touch what they have this decade.
- 16:45SPEAKER_01: It's embarrassing, and all of our fans know it.
- 16:48SPEAKER_01: Kirby Hocutt knows it, and now the heat is really on after hiring an outsider, a Texas outsider that no one can get behind.
- 16:56SPEAKER_01: So I really think that the focus with this committee is going to be looking at a Texas guy.
- 17:01SPEAKER_01: I think that's the most important thing that they're gonna be looking at is a guy that knows Texas, a guy that's one in Texas, and a guy that can recruit in Texas.
- 17:09SPEAKER_01: So I really and Kirby Hoke made that clear.
- 17:11SPEAKER_01: He said he's done with the transfer portal, he wants guys that can recruit in Texas, he wants a guy that knows Texas, and I think he's kind of making up for his own mistakes of hiring a Mountain West guy that has literally nothing to do with the Lone Star State.
- 17:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and I think I and he he stated that in his press conference.
- 17:28SPEAKER_02: He wants a guy from Texas, he wants better recruiting, he wants all this sort of stuff, and I think there are some really viable candidates to do just that.
- 17:36SPEAKER_02: And uh, I mean, I guess we can start it off right now with naming some potential replacements for Matt Wells uh here at Texas Tech starting next season.
- 17:45SPEAKER_02: Um and uh the first two names that come to mind, uh, they are the they've been shouted the most on social media, uh, are UTSA coach Jeff Trailer and SMU coach Sonny Dykes.
- 17:58SPEAKER_02: Those are the two guys in my eyes that it's really gonna come down to.
- 18:01SPEAKER_02: We can talk about a few other dark horses here, but uh these two guys in particular are uh the two that have the best chance of replacing Matt Wells here at Texas Tech.
- 18:12SPEAKER_02: And uh starting, I mean, what what do you think about Jeff Trailer and uh Sonny Dykes?
- 18:18SPEAKER_01: Um, oddly enough, two co-hosts on a podcast have the same opinion on this topic.
- 18:25SPEAKER_01: I know you and I and my brother have gone on and on and on about who we think the favorite for the Texas Tech job is, and we all think it's Jeff Trailer at UTSA.
- 18:34SPEAKER_01: What he's done in San Antonio, our hometown, is just remarkable.
- 18:40SPEAKER_01: I mean, you you take this program that's bare, not even 10 years old to ranked heights to national attention to an undefeated season in your second year.
- 18:51SPEAKER_01: And I'm not even in his first year was great as well.
- 18:54SPEAKER_01: The guy took the the roadrunners to a bowl game in his very first year as head coach, and this is a program that wasn't exactly left in the best condition.
- 19:02SPEAKER_01: This is not a program where they go through, it's not like a U of H where they just like kind of keep going through the coaches as they get hired.
- 19:10SPEAKER_01: No, this is a these these are this is a program that moves on from coaches because they need something better.
- 19:15SPEAKER_01: Um, they need something to finally break through, and they finally found a guy that has broken through that and has proven that UTSA can be a player on the Texas G5 landscape.
- 19:23SPEAKER_01: Heck, he earned them a spot in the new American conference.
- 19:27SPEAKER_01: That's big, and this is only his second year.
- 19:30SPEAKER_01: The guy can recruit his ass off.
- 19:32SPEAKER_01: He was Big 12 recruiter of the year at UT.
- 19:34SPEAKER_01: He kicked ass at Arkansas as well.
- 19:36SPEAKER_01: He's why Arkansas is seeing a bit of a renaissance with their new players, and now he's proven as his own head coach at the college football level that he can win.
- 19:46SPEAKER_01: And I mean, we are talking about a high school football legend.
- 19:50SPEAKER_01: This guy has his high school uh football stadium named after him.
- 19:53SPEAKER_01: The guy's a winner everywhere he goes, and I think Texas Tech needs some of that blood.
- 19:59SPEAKER_02: The fact that he has the UTSA Roadrunners, a program that started in 2013 at 8-0 this season, is straight up the reason.
- 20:13SPEAKER_02: I mean, that's an unbelievable record for a program that, like you said, is less than 10 years old.
- 20:18SPEAKER_02: It is remarkable if if and we know UTSA.
- 20:21SPEAKER_02: I mean, we grew up around the area, so nobody gives a crap about UTSA in San Antonio.
- 20:27SPEAKER_02: It's a commuter school, it's a it's yeah, it's a commuter school to eventually try to get to UT.
- 20:32SPEAKER_02: But uh yeah, and it's just it like he's gained a fan base down there.
- 20:38SPEAKER_02: I mean, people like UTSA now, they didn't give two craps about UTSA prior to this.
- 20:45SPEAKER_02: And you know, he finally makes a bowl game last season for the second time in school history in his first year.
- 20:51SPEAKER_02: He's got him in a prime position to potentially go to a New York New Year's Six Bowl.
- 20:57SPEAKER_01: Dude, that is never done.
- 20:59SPEAKER_02: That is unbelievable for a UTSA team to be in the position that they're in.
- 21:04SPEAKER_02: And Jeff Trailer is the cause of it, he's the root of it.
- 21:08SPEAKER_02: He he knows how to bring together a group of players, he knows how to get players to a school, he knows Texas, he knows every uh like he's my number one option, and it's really not close for me.
- 21:21SPEAKER_02: Um, I I would love it if Jeff Trailer was the coach at Texas Tech here in 2021-22.
- 21:27SPEAKER_01: He's unbelievably respected in the Texas high school football circles, and I it's it's hard to understand how clicky and how egotistic that circle is.
- 21:41SPEAKER_01: I'm not like ripping on those guys, I'm just saying they like their own and they respect their own because everyone here that's listening to this podcast knows how stupidly serious we take high school football in the state of Texas.
- 21:55SPEAKER_01: It's why it's the most important recruiting state in college football.
- 21:58SPEAKER_01: Um, and this guy.
- 22:00SPEAKER_01: Guy is at the very, very top of it.
- 22:03SPEAKER_01: Like they he is, they look at him like he's one of their own because he is.
- 22:07SPEAKER_01: The man rattled off state championships at the level, and somehow they thought he was good enough to achieve at the college football level, and he proved that he was.
- 22:17SPEAKER_01: That step is rarely taken and successful, and he's pulled it off.
- 22:22SPEAKER_01: Texas Tech, not that I know of, has ever had a coach like that.
- 22:26SPEAKER_01: I don't think we've ever had a Texas high school legend come in and just be able to take our program to the next step, especially recruiting-wise.
- 22:36SPEAKER_01: You slap a he's killing it with the roadrunner on his polo.
- 22:40SPEAKER_01: Imagine him with a double T on there instead.
- 22:43SPEAKER_01: It's immediately elevated just from the prestige of the brand that we have and that we need to remind the state of.
- 22:50SPEAKER_01: I feel like it's been forgotten how important the double T is to the state.
- 22:55SPEAKER_01: For over for like a hundred years, we've been one of the pre-eminent programs of Texas, uh, of the state of Texas.
- 23:02SPEAKER_01: But recently, our head coaches just have neglected recruiting the state.
- 23:07SPEAKER_01: And I think this is the guy that can get us back into that talk to put us back over the Baylors, back over the TCUs to remind them that this is one of the preeminent brands of college football and represents the state of Texas.
- 23:22SPEAKER_01: I think he's the guy.
- 23:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no, absolutely.
- 23:24SPEAKER_02: I so I mean, clearly he's our number one option here.
- 23:27SPEAKER_02: Uh, talking tech pod officially endorses Jeff Trailer as the new head coach at most important endorsement he could ever get.
- 23:35SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you know, I mean, we matter, obviously.
- 23:38SPEAKER_02: You know, or we have coaches replying to us, Steven.
- 23:40SPEAKER_01: We have coaches pooping on us.
- 23:42SPEAKER_01: So obviously, we have some sort of sway, right?
- 23:45SPEAKER_01: Obviously, we are, but we are just a couple fair weather fans.
- 23:47SPEAKER_01: So I don't know.
- 23:49SPEAKER_02: Are we the guy?
- 23:50SPEAKER_02: Are we the reason Matt Wells is fired?
- 23:52SPEAKER_01: Some are saying Rambling Raiders is inferring that we got Matt Wells fired.
- 24:00SPEAKER_02: No, we have no say, we're idiots, we know that, but uh, we don't need a coach to tell us that.
- 24:05SPEAKER_02: But we are definitely not fair weather fans.
- 24:08SPEAKER_02: Uh, Mr.
- 24:09SPEAKER_02: Coach, not gonna say his name.
- 24:11SPEAKER_02: Uh, but uh we should we should talk about Sonny Dykes.
- 24:14SPEAKER_02: Sonny Dykes is also a great option.
- 24:16SPEAKER_02: There are a lot of other options that we would absolutely get behind.
- 24:21SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, it's not like it's Jeff trailer or bus for us, but it's also clearly our number one choice.
- 24:27SPEAKER_02: But uh, you know, Sonny Dykes is another great option.
- 24:30SPEAKER_02: Uh, head coach at SMU.
- 24:31SPEAKER_02: Uh, obviously, the Texas Tech connection with the Dykes last name.
- 24:36SPEAKER_02: Uh, you know, he's he's built SMU into a really, really strong program.
- 24:40SPEAKER_02: They're another undefeated team this year.
- 24:42SPEAKER_02: So uh, you know, I I think he's a guy to talk about.
- 24:45SPEAKER_02: What do you think about Sonny Dykes?
- 24:47SPEAKER_01: I mean, we're we're talking about the coach that's brought SMU to the levels prior to the Pony Express from the most infamous NCAA F up of all time that was killing SMU's football program.
- 25:00SPEAKER_01: Um, because it was so frustrating to be an SMU fan is seeing what's happened in the college landscape that's way worse than anything they ever did, and it ruined their program.
- 25:11SPEAKER_01: And Sonny Dykes has resurrected it.
- 25:14SPEAKER_01: Like this this man, what this man has done is nothing short of impressive.
- 25:19SPEAKER_01: He took over a program, and then every single year he was there, he's added to the win total.
- 25:25SPEAKER_01: In his second year, the man won 10 games, and then in the year prior, they weren't even bowling.
- 25:32SPEAKER_01: And he takes them to 10 wins.
- 25:34SPEAKER_01: Um, he's improved the record every single year, except for the COVID year.
- 25:37SPEAKER_01: Well, everyone gets a mulligan with that, doesn't really count.
- 25:40SPEAKER_01: And now he has them undefeated.
- 25:42SPEAKER_01: And obviously, what every tech fan is remembering is that this man, his last name is Texas Tech Royalty.
- 25:50SPEAKER_01: Short of Michael, uh short of Crabtree.
- 25:53SPEAKER_01: What name is more synonymous with Texas Tech football than Dykes?
- 25:58SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I mean, I shoot what what James?
- 26:05SPEAKER_02: No, that is the uh the most hated last name of in Texas Tech Football.
- 26:10SPEAKER_02: But no, you're right.
- 26:11SPEAKER_02: I mean, uh the Dykes last name holds a lot of uh holds a lot of honor and uh loyalty and everything like that.
- 26:18SPEAKER_02: I mean, obviously Spike Dykes was a great coach for a lot of years here and uh you know built the foundation kind of uh for Texas Tech football.
- 26:26SPEAKER_02: And so uh to get Sonny back, it's a great story.
- 26:29SPEAKER_02: Uh I can I can get behind that 100% as a fan.
- 26:33SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, I would be excited.
- 26:34SPEAKER_02: He I not only just the name though, he is a good coach.
- 26:38SPEAKER_02: He's a great recruiter.
- 26:39SPEAKER_02: He had a really he had a kind of a bad stint at Cal.
- 26:43SPEAKER_02: But you know, when you really think about it, Cal is an unbelievably difficult job if you're not from the area.
- 26:50SPEAKER_02: I mean, you have to not only take into into consideration the talent that you can get into that school, but also if they can meet the academic requirements.
- 26:59SPEAKER_02: And, you know, when you're a guy that's not from a guy that's from Texas that knows nothing about you know the California landscape and coaching over there, it's difficult to do that.
- 27:09SPEAKER_02: And it's just difficult to succeed at Cal.
- 27:11SPEAKER_02: It just is.
- 27:12SPEAKER_02: They've never been good.
- 27:13SPEAKER_02: And you know, it's it's really difficult to uh to just get wins over there consistently.
- 27:20SPEAKER_02: And Sonny Dykes uh didn't succeed over there, but you can he's succeeded everywhere in this area, uh at SMU, at Louisiana Tech, everything like that.
- 27:30SPEAKER_02: So uh, you know, I think he's a good option.
- 27:33SPEAKER_02: Um, I think he's a clear number two in my eyes.
- 27:36SPEAKER_01: Easy number two.
- 27:37SPEAKER_01: I mean, he he got his coach, he's been coaching a long time.
- 27:40SPEAKER_01: He started it, he started his head coaching stint at Louisiana Tech, a solid G5 program that he turned into a real winner, and that's where he got attention from a Pac-12, a power five, a a nationally relevant name like Cal.
- 27:54SPEAKER_01: And it like you said, it just it wasn't gonna be the right fit.
- 27:57SPEAKER_01: You're gonna hear that at every Texas Tech related media saying that that just wasn't the right fit.
- 28:02SPEAKER_01: It wasn't.
- 28:03SPEAKER_01: We're talking about a Lubbock boy that grew up in the Texas Tech realm going to coach a team in Berkeley, California.
- 28:10SPEAKER_01: It just it's not going to work, and it shows what what he's learned since then to come back to his home state, come go to the Metroplex and coach at a a very proud SMU program, and he's turned that into an American favorite.
- 28:27SPEAKER_01: At the at the moment, the best G5 league he has undefeated and going crazy in the top 12 well that there's talking heads saying that the SMU job is now officially better for Sonny Dykes than the Texas Tech job.
- 28:42SPEAKER_01: But I none neither of us on this podcast believe that.
- 28:45SPEAKER_01: And especially we're talking about a Texas Tech alum whose father is the biggest coaching legend at Texas Tech.
- 28:51SPEAKER_01: I he's a bigger legend than even Mike Leach overall, probably.
- 28:54SPEAKER_01: So it the only problem with reeling in a Sonny Dykes to Texas Tech, he's got the resume to come here, but that is a supported program over there.
- 29:07SPEAKER_01: They have boosters that's that back the program, and he's paid very well to coach the SMU Mustangs to do what they're doing.
- 29:16SPEAKER_01: It would take a ludicrous contract to get him over to Texas Tech University.
- 29:21SPEAKER_01: I think the only thing that would make it more reasonable is him, you know, probably taking about an even pay salary to go to Texas Tech because he just feels his affinity to his alma mater and his father.
- 29:34SPEAKER_01: Because other than that, I think you just you're gonna have to pay out the wazoo to get him.
- 29:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no doubt.
- 29:39SPEAKER_02: I mean, you definitely uh it's an easier time uh having a payment, you know, it's easier to outpay UTSA than it is SMU.
- 29:49SPEAKER_02: Uh, I will I will say SMU is in a is in a really bad position right now, especially with the American conference teams that are now coming over to the Big 12 in Cincinnati, Houston, and UCF.
- 30:00SPEAKER_02: And SMU's kind of being left behind there in the American, that is much, much worse now.
- 30:05SPEAKER_02: Uh, so you know, that job is clearly worse in my eyes, just from the conference affiliation uh aspect of it.
- 30:13SPEAKER_02: I can understand a guy if he wants to stay in the Metroplex, if he wants to stay, if he likes coaching there, if he uh, you know, he wants to build something there.
- 30:20SPEAKER_02: I understand it, you know, I get it, but uh payment Texas Tech should be still be able to outpay an SMU uh because we're desperate, man.
- 30:29SPEAKER_02: It's been way too long since we've been good at football.
- 30:32SPEAKER_02: And I think the boosters are ready uh to not only pay the head coach, but start paying the assistants more.
- 30:38SPEAKER_02: Uh, you know, get a full on staff and not just, you know, uh not not be cheap when it comes to this because we are a very rich program.
- 30:48SPEAKER_02: We have a lot of people backing us in financially, you know.
- 30:53SPEAKER_02: So uh I don't think that's an issue per se.
- 30:56SPEAKER_02: Uh obviously every coach has their uh reasons for potentially staying or leaving for another job, but uh, you know, the SMU thing doesn't bother me much.
- 31:05SPEAKER_02: Um, and and really I think it's about I think something, uh a slight factor, maybe in his mind, and this is me trying to read minds of people, but uh, you know, do you really want to follow in your dad's footsteps?
- 31:17SPEAKER_02: Do you really want the chance to succeed to uh potentially not succeed as a dikes?
- 31:25SPEAKER_02: Because we've seen even in basketball, I know Bob Knight isn't like the Texas Tech legend, but he was a Texas Tech.
- 31:33SPEAKER_02: And we took the you know, he we had some good years under Bob Knight, and then Pat Knight takes over, and he's awful.
- 31:39SPEAKER_02: I mean, he's straight up terrible, and now you know he's uh he's shunned, you know.
- 31:44SPEAKER_02: We're not we're not big fans of of Pat Knight over here.
- 31:47SPEAKER_02: So does Sonny Dykes really want the the potential of that happening to him?
- 31:53SPEAKER_02: I don't know, I don't even know if that's a factor for him, but I I thought it would be something to bring up.
- 31:57SPEAKER_01: It is that's a great thing to bring up because I think that's the existential thing that a lot of people are thinking about, you know, because he's got his own thing, he's his own person at SMU at Texas Tech.
- 32:08SPEAKER_01: He's Spike Dyke's son, yeah, and that's a great thing to bring up.
- 32:12SPEAKER_01: Um, but Sonny is arguably a better coach than his dad.
- 32:19SPEAKER_01: He spike was awesome at tech, as in the fact that no matter what, we can count on a seven-win season, pretty much, but often we weren't getting anything better than that.
- 32:29SPEAKER_01: He he he knew how to make Texas Tech competitive, you know, he he knew how to make Texas Tech good enough to go to a bowl year in and year out, but he wasn't the guy you would count on for conference titles.
- 32:42SPEAKER_01: It's not like he lit up the Raptors with with you know 1992 Big 12, uh Southwest Conference champion.
- 32:49SPEAKER_01: Um, but we do have a lot to owe him in the fact that he kept us good enough, kept us relevant enough to be the team that was considered to go with AM and UT to the Big 12.
- 32:58SPEAKER_01: So we the school has so much to owe him, so that is still an enormous shadow.
- 33:03SPEAKER_01: And like I said before we even started to talk about this, is that the Dykes name is probably the biggest in the tech football legacy.
- 33:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but I think that Sonny probably has a little more in him, and he's a youngish man for a coaching position.
- 33:19SPEAKER_01: He's only 51, that's not that old for coaching at the college level.
- 33:23SPEAKER_01: Um, but you're right, that's a it's a lot to ask of somebody to follow probably what is what would probably be the most stressful job he possibly could.
- 33:32SPEAKER_01: That is probably more stressful than going to a blue blood to win, is living up to your father's shadow.
- 33:38SPEAKER_01: And I think that's a great point to bring up, man.
- 33:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no doubt.
- 33:41SPEAKER_02: So uh I'd love it if Sonny came here.
- 33:43SPEAKER_02: If uh, but you know, Jeff trailer's our number one option.
- 33:46SPEAKER_02: Let's talk about some kind of dark horse candidates, uh, two guys that I I me personally, I don't think are ready for the head coach at Texas Tech.
- 33:56SPEAKER_02: Uh, but Graham Harrell and Joey McGuire have been uh tossed out there.
- 34:01SPEAKER_02: Graham Harrell, the uh I believe he's still a he's still the offensive coordinator of USC, even after the firing.
- 34:07SPEAKER_02: Uh, they haven't had a great season so far.
- 34:09SPEAKER_02: Uh, he was a much hotter candidate two years ago than he is now.
- 34:15SPEAKER_02: I think people are kind of realizing that he may not be there yet.
- 34:19SPEAKER_02: Uh, he may not be ready to coach a team yet.
- 34:21SPEAKER_02: I'm not saying it won't happen, but I am saying that uh right now I don't think he's the best choice.
- 34:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he's a project.
- 34:28SPEAKER_01: You know, he was a much hotter name where he was just coming out of UNT, smoking it up with Seth Latrell, who was one of the biggest names on Texas tech list.
- 34:36SPEAKER_01: You know, this and Seth Latrell is about to be fired from UNT from his absolute nosedive.
- 34:40SPEAKER_01: What a bullet we dodged there.
- 34:42SPEAKER_01: Absolutely and Kansas State's saying the same thing because Kansas State was trying really hard as well.
- 34:47SPEAKER_01: Um, and you're right, man.
- 34:50SPEAKER_01: He it's he he is a project you look at a few years more down the road.
- 34:56SPEAKER_01: He's five to ten years later, he's such a young man, and he's just so young in the college landscape, he has so much to learn, and he's he was probably telling a tougher hand at USC.
- 35:08SPEAKER_01: A lot is expected there, and he's leaded right out of North Texas to go coach for one of the biggest brands in all college football.
- 35:15SPEAKER_01: So it's probably a big learning experience, uh experience for him, and he's he's always probably gonna have a loyalty to Texas Tech.
- 35:22SPEAKER_01: So I don't think you need to rush towards it.
- 35:24SPEAKER_01: I think you just gotta let him roll, let him learn.
- 35:27SPEAKER_01: And maybe whenever he's successful later down the road and he's ready for that next step, and Texas Tech is ready for another coach at that point, he's probably gonna be a big name to talk about next coaching hire.
- 35:37SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and I mean it's it's obviously the easy comparison is Cliff Kingsbury.
- 35:41SPEAKER_02: Uh, you know, both young guys, both former quarterbacks at Texas Tech, uh coming in and getting their first head coaching opportunity here.
- 35:50SPEAKER_02: Um, and with Cliff, you know, he it there were things about Cliff that a lot of things about Cliff that didn't go well uh at Texas Tech, but he really you saw him improve as a head coach as it went on, and now he's really successful in the NFL game.
- 36:06SPEAKER_02: I would argue the NFL game, he's much more suited for that than college.
- 36:11SPEAKER_02: Graham Harrell is a different person, but you know, there the comparison's there, and I'm not sure the entire fan base is ready for another Cliff Kingsbury, potentially.
- 36:20SPEAKER_02: Uh, so I think you know, you get uh like you said, five, 10 years down the line, maybe he's a more established head coach, and you get him kind of in that sweet spot before the blue bloods start coming at him.
- 36:32SPEAKER_02: Uh, you know, potentially.
- 36:33SPEAKER_02: And and that's if this next head coach doesn't work out.
- 36:36SPEAKER_02: Hopefully, we're not even talking about this five to ten years down the line.
- 36:39SPEAKER_02: But uh another name to bring up is Joey McGuire, uh Baylor's assistant coach right now.
- 36:44SPEAKER_02: Um, he's a dude who has been around two different Baylor Renaissances, one with Matt Rule, and now one uh currently with Dave Aranda.
- 36:53SPEAKER_02: And he has been a big integral part of the turnarounds that Baylor has seen with their football program at two separate occasions.
- 37:01SPEAKER_02: So hasn't been a head coach yet.
- 37:03SPEAKER_02: So, you know, you don't really know what he's gonna do as as the leader of the program.
- 37:09SPEAKER_02: So I I just thought he was another name to bring up.
- 37:11SPEAKER_02: He's a very dark horse candidate, yeah.
- 37:13SPEAKER_01: Uh he the thing with him is kind of similar to Graham Harrell, but even more so is there's just there's not that coaching experience that we're looking for right now.
- 37:23SPEAKER_01: I uh with Graham the biggest thing with Graham Harrell to me is I don't want to take another risk on a young coordinator because what I want right now is a proven head coach, a proven winner that can like generally manage an entire program.
- 37:40SPEAKER_01: And McGuire just he hasn't had that opportunity to do so yet.
- 37:44SPEAKER_01: I think he needs to be given a UTSA-like job first and prove his worth there and prove he's he can do the general manager duties of being a head coach and play calling in the middle of the game to warrant a power five look like from Texas Tech.
- 38:02SPEAKER_01: And we're not just talking about Texas Tech in a general job searching point, this is a very pivotal point for Texas Tech in the sense that this is a hire you have to get right.
- 38:14SPEAKER_01: Like this is try number four.
- 38:16SPEAKER_01: All right, it's time to get it right.
- 38:19SPEAKER_01: So, and especially with the conference realignment coming up, uh, or you know, with the shifting Big 12 and the us being left out of the pack 12 because probably a lot of because of our struggling football program, you got to get it right this time.
- 38:31SPEAKER_01: Kirby Hoke kept saying it during the the press conference that this is a time where Texas Tech football has to pick it up, and I just don't think you want to bet on a Joey on a McGuire on that reviving your program.
- 38:45SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I mean, in in my opinion, Joey McGuire is just kind of a worst chef trailer.
- 38:49SPEAKER_02: Uh, you know, he's a Texas high school legend, uh, everything like that.
- 38:52SPEAKER_02: But uh he's not he's not the guy for Texas Tech in my eyes.
- 38:56SPEAKER_02: Um, uh but again, you know, if we hire both of these guys, I'm gonna be behind him.
- 39:01SPEAKER_02: It's just not it's just not, you know, who I would want uh as or who I would think is the best candidate at the moment.
- 39:09SPEAKER_01: You need a program saver, you need a program builder, and you just those guys are bets.
- 39:15SPEAKER_01: We already took our bet.
- 39:16SPEAKER_01: Clef Kingsbury was our bet, and Matt Wells was supposed to be the culture changer, and that didn't work.
- 39:22SPEAKER_01: Now you need a program builder, you need a guy that's ready because you know the whole thing was we're not gonna rebuild, we're gonna reload with Matt Wells.
- 39:29SPEAKER_01: So, no, now we need a builder.
- 39:32SPEAKER_01: We need it, we need a guy that knows how to recruit Texas, we need a guy that understands Texas football culture, and I think that's with the two clear-cut candidates in Jeff Trailer and Sonny uh Dykes.
- 39:42SPEAKER_01: So that's that's I'm sorry.
- 39:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I mean, well, we should talk about the other Sonny, uh, the guy who is currently our interim head coach right now, Sonny Cumby.
- 39:51SPEAKER_02: What's the potential you think of him, you know, getting an interview here to potentially remain as the head coach?
- 39:59SPEAKER_01: I think it's there.
- 40:00SPEAKER_01: I mean, if you go off and rattle one or two more wins against this absolute gauntlet of a ranked schedule, he deserves an interview because I mean you're you're knocking off ranked teams, something TexTech sucks at.
- 40:14SPEAKER_01: We we don't do that.
- 40:16SPEAKER_01: At least this this this decade of Tex Tech football does not do that.
- 40:19SPEAKER_01: If he somehow does that, the guy deserves an interview.
- 40:22SPEAKER_01: And hell, if he goes on and wins that like like three of them, no, he he he better be your first interview, actually, at that point.
- 40:30SPEAKER_01: So um, I I think this the Sunny Comey experiment is gonna be fun because it breathes new life into the fan base.
- 40:37SPEAKER_01: You know, it's something new to believe in.
- 40:38SPEAKER_01: He's a prodigal son, he's one of ours.
- 40:41SPEAKER_01: Uh, um, and he's playing with literally nothing to lose.
- 40:45SPEAKER_01: So it's just gonna be easy to support him because he's one of us.
- 40:50SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no doubt.
- 40:50SPEAKER_02: And I liked his mentality uh looking at it.
- 40:53SPEAKER_02: I know he was asked a question in his first press conference uh here post Matt Wells firing.
- 40:58SPEAKER_02: And he's like, hey, it's it's a job interview, it's a four-game job interview.
- 41:01SPEAKER_02: Uh, you know, we're gonna try to get to this fifth win and or fifth game, and we're gonna try to win win the bowl game and and do the best we can moving forward.
- 41:09SPEAKER_02: And like you said, it's kind of an F it attitude, you know.
- 41:12SPEAKER_02: I'm going out there, we're going balls to the walls.
- 41:14SPEAKER_02: It's a it's a tough schedule out here, but we're gonna try our hardest.
- 41:18SPEAKER_02: And if he does pull out a few wins, he absolutely deserves an interview for the head coaching job.
- 41:23SPEAKER_02: Uh, would I like it if he just remained on staff as the OC?
- 41:27SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I would like that better than him probably being a head coach at this moment.
- 41:31SPEAKER_02: But hey, you never know.
- 41:32SPEAKER_02: Maybe he could turn out who knows what if he goes undefeated right here.
- 41:36SPEAKER_02: Who knows?
- 41:36SPEAKER_02: Like, I you know, I'm not saying that's gonna happen.
- 41:39SPEAKER_02: There's a very low chance of that happening, but uh, I think he's he's some somebody we should talk about during this whole thing.
- 41:46SPEAKER_01: I absolutely agree, and I think all of our fans are behind him.
- 41:49SPEAKER_01: I like I said, Tech's Tech is one of those schools that absolutely loves their own.
- 41:53SPEAKER_01: You see how we worship Tim Tadlock and now Coach Adams, they're one of us, and we're a big one of us kind of school.
- 42:01SPEAKER_01: If they're an alum, that's like a quadruple bonus for us.
- 42:04SPEAKER_01: It's it's insanely big.
- 42:06SPEAKER_01: Um, which is why one of the reasons why Sonny Dykes is so high on the candidate list.
- 42:12SPEAKER_01: We love us, some of us, yeah, and it's understandable because no matter what, and and that's why we love Sonny Gumby, and that's why we're gonna be pulling for him so hard in these interim games, and plus we just don't like to lose, we like to win, first of all.
- 42:26SPEAKER_01: He's one of us, um, is Lubbock gets so much crap for no freaking reason in the national media, and I think that's probably probably one of the biggest reasons why we love our own so much is because we know what we have, we know what West Texas is, we know what Texas Tech is, and it's a special place.
- 42:46SPEAKER_01: And the people looking in from the outside just don't get it.
- 42:50SPEAKER_01: Like the people of West Texas, the culture of it, they're so special.
- 42:54SPEAKER_01: Like these are hardworking, kind people that don't deserve the shit that they're given.
- 42:58SPEAKER_01: And Lubbock is a fabulous town.
- 43:00SPEAKER_01: I would love to live there.
- 43:02SPEAKER_01: It's a great family town full of good people, hardworking people that love Texas Tech, love Texas, love America, and all that.
- 43:08SPEAKER_01: And it's it's they're dealt an unfair hand by the national media for no reason.
- 43:12SPEAKER_01: And I think that's why we have this underdog attitude at all times, this huge ship on our shoulder, where we love to see our alumni take little old bum ass Texas Tech as the media likes to be us and go on and make huge noise in the meet in on the national stage.
- 43:26SPEAKER_01: And I would love to see us do the same at football.
- 43:29SPEAKER_01: It's what we we love to see.
- 43:32SPEAKER_02: Winning changes perception, it always does.
- 43:35SPEAKER_02: Nobody was saying anything about Ames Iowa a couple years ago, and now that Matt Campbell has turned that program into a winner, they're saying it's a great job, solid location, everything like that.
- 43:47SPEAKER_02: Like, come on, it's just, I mean, as soon as we get a winning coach in Lovbock, the perception changes tenfold.
- 43:53SPEAKER_02: It just does.
- 43:54SPEAKER_02: And that's you know, that's an unfortunate thing that that happens, but uh, you know.
- 44:00SPEAKER_02: That just is what it is.
- 44:01SPEAKER_02: Take everything a national media head says with a grain of salt.
- 44:05SPEAKER_02: Uh, you know, the uh Aggies and Longhorns, they're they're trash anyway.
- 44:10SPEAKER_02: Don't listen to their opinion.
- 44:12SPEAKER_02: So uh, you know, the the like you you said it all right there, Lubbock's a great place.
- 44:17SPEAKER_02: Uh, you can build a program anywhere in this country uh for college football.
- 44:21SPEAKER_02: We are seeing Tuscaloosa, Alabama have a uh be the best place you can be.
- 44:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah, be in the dynasty of all dynasties in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
- 44:31SPEAKER_02: If have you ever been there, it's not great, it's not great.
- 44:34SPEAKER_02: Clemson, South Carolina.
- 44:37SPEAKER_02: Yes, we have the resources.
- 44:39SPEAKER_02: We are building a 40 to 50 million dollar new facility.
- 44:43SPEAKER_02: We have the resources, we have the donors, we have the alumni base, we have everything for a successful program.
- 44:50SPEAKER_02: And it's going to happen, it's just a matter of when.
- 44:53SPEAKER_02: And I hope that it happens soon with this next hire.
- 44:57SPEAKER_02: Um, but yeah, man, it's it's crazy.
- 45:00SPEAKER_01: It's it's so funny, man.
- 45:02SPEAKER_01: Like you would think the national college sports media would get it.
- 45:05SPEAKER_01: That it's not about the location, it's not about the school, it's about the guy, you know, and that's what it's always always been about.
- 45:14SPEAKER_01: The the the biggest star in college sports is the coach.
- 45:16SPEAKER_01: It's never the player, it's the coach.
- 45:18SPEAKER_01: The person that's supposed to talk about in college sports is Nick Saban, not the players, Nick Saban.
- 45:24SPEAKER_01: And it's different in professional sports.
- 45:25SPEAKER_01: You I could barely name the head coaches in professional sports.
- 45:29SPEAKER_01: You know the players, not the coaches.
- 45:32SPEAKER_01: It's the inverse in college sports.
- 45:35SPEAKER_01: So all we need is our guy.
- 45:36SPEAKER_01: We've seen our guy again.
- 45:37SPEAKER_01: We've had our guys before, and all we do is gotta get him back.
- 45:40SPEAKER_01: And it's just it's funny to see how much football affects the perception of your school and town.
- 45:47SPEAKER_01: You know, it's basketball and baseball can be national champions every year, but people would still say Lubbock sucks if our football team sucks.
- 45:55SPEAKER_01: They would still say Texas Tech is a joke if our football team still sucks.
- 45:58SPEAKER_01: And that's why I think it's so important that, especially in Texas, that our football team gets back to respectability for the sake of our other programs too.
- 46:08SPEAKER_01: Like we're we already doing so well.
- 46:09SPEAKER_01: Imagine the level we can bring them to if our football program can support them as well, is all I'm saying.
- 46:15SPEAKER_01: I know we're kind of going off topic here, but it was a good tangent.
- 46:19SPEAKER_01: And I know it's just our red raiders, we all feel the unfairness that we're dealt as a fan base, as a school, and as a region in West Texas.
- 46:27SPEAKER_01: It's just all unfounded, and just remember that it's unfounded.
- 46:30SPEAKER_01: We're we're so much better than what they say we are.
- 46:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no doubt.
- 46:34SPEAKER_02: So, uh, another couple candidates.
- 46:35SPEAKER_02: What do you think?
- 46:36SPEAKER_02: Coach Prime, Coach O, you feeling any of these boys?
- 46:41SPEAKER_01: Dude, I mean, it's so funny seeing like uh like uh the talking uh tortillas and take spot with Albi and all them saying, like, bring on Deion Sanders, make Rob Pro.
- 46:52SPEAKER_01: Uh, or we all loved all those uh tech talkers to death, man.
- 46:56SPEAKER_01: Um, but it would be a blast.
- 46:59SPEAKER_01: It it if one thing's for sure, all eyes, as I was just complaining about it, all eyes will be on Lubbock, and all eyes will be on Texas Tech University with Deion Sanders, one of the best football players of all time, at head coach.
- 47:10SPEAKER_01: You know, he's done an okay job at Jacksonville State.
- 47:13SPEAKER_01: That's where he is, right?
- 47:14SPEAKER_01: Jackson State, yeah, I believe.
- 47:15SPEAKER_01: Oh, Jackson State, Jackson State.
- 47:17SPEAKER_01: He's done a great job at FCS Jackson State.
- 47:21SPEAKER_01: What the jump to Texas Tech is quite the leap, I would say.
- 47:26SPEAKER_01: So it's it's uh it would still be a blast, though.
- 47:29SPEAKER_01: What do you say?
- 47:30SPEAKER_02: We would get hella love from the media if we hired Deion Sanders, but no, it's it's not gonna work out.
- 47:37SPEAKER_02: It's also it would be a trip if we hired freaking Ed Ogeron.
- 47:42SPEAKER_02: It's a terrible, terrible idea.
- 47:45SPEAKER_02: It's it's one of the worst ideas I've ever, but yeah, if you hear some freaking cartoon character of a person going corporators every weekend, I mean, of course, sissy boy purple.
- 47:58SPEAKER_00: Those TCU horror progs over TC T uh Sissy Boy Purple.
- 48:03SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I mean, it would be a trip of a time having Ed O'Gron be our coach, but that's not what we're looking for.
- 48:09SPEAKER_02: We're looking for actual success here.
- 48:11SPEAKER_02: We're not looking for Coach O who's championships are nothing at Texas Tech.
- 48:16SPEAKER_02: It was it.
- 48:19SPEAKER_02: Listen, I'm living in Baton Rouge and I have seen the way that this community has absolutely, completely, 1000% turned on a guy who just won them a national championship three years ago.
- 48:33SPEAKER_02: And just he just doesn't have much left.
- 48:35SPEAKER_02: I mean, uh to say that he was the biggest part of that national championship would just be wrong.
- 48:41SPEAKER_02: I mean, he had unbelievable coordinators and an unbelievable team, to be honest.
- 48:44SPEAKER_02: So uh, no, it's not a good idea.
- 48:46SPEAKER_02: The coach O guys need to get out.
- 48:48SPEAKER_02: Deion Sanders, uh, I'm not there.
- 48:50SPEAKER_02: I would 100% get behind it.
- 48:52SPEAKER_02: I would be there though.
- 48:54SPEAKER_02: I would be there, but I don't want to be there.
- 48:59SPEAKER_02: Uh you know, power to you for believing in Coach Prime.
- 49:03SPEAKER_02: But uh no, I I don't think I don't think that's even an option at this point, to be honest.
- 49:07SPEAKER_02: So there's a few other names.
- 49:08SPEAKER_02: We could throw out Billy Napier, we could throw out some other names out there, but uh it's just I think the the candidates that we listed, specifically Jeff Trailer and Sonny Dykes, those are the two guys we're looking at with potentially Sonny Cumby breaking his way into the into the fold there.
- 49:24SPEAKER_02: Uh, I think the two young guys are are people to talk about, but not necessarily who we're actually looking at.
- 49:30SPEAKER_02: So um, you know, I think in closing for candidates, we're on team Jeff Trailer, but we would absolutely welcome any of these other candidates.
- 49:39SPEAKER_01: And those top two are insanely good, those are stupid good two top two candidates.
- 49:45SPEAKER_01: Because remember the last time around, we really we didn't really know who was next.
- 49:49SPEAKER_01: That was a landscape that was just a mystery.
- 49:52SPEAKER_01: Like, who does Texas Tech hire?
- 49:54SPEAKER_01: And because everyone thought it was gonna be Seth Lutrell, and look at look how that's turned out, obviously.
- 49:58SPEAKER_01: So not good, not good, but I really do think these two are special, like but uh Sonny Dykes has proven that he's special while Jeff Trailer looks like he's the next big thing, and I really do want that next big thing.
- 50:13SPEAKER_01: Uh, I brought this up before on one of our previous recordings, one of the 17.
- 50:17SPEAKER_01: Um, that that I think the timing of firing Matt Wells has to do with entering the race for uh Jeff Trailer.
- 50:28SPEAKER_01: Uh, I think this is a lottery, and I think we want to get those winning numbers, and I think getting ahead of it is a part of getting those winning numbers.
- 50:34SPEAKER_01: I think we're already contracting, contracting, contacting his agents, um, as well as uh Sonny Dykes, because both of them have already released statements about the Texas Tech job.
- 50:45SPEAKER_01: I think that says that our money boys are already talking to their agents and they're giving coach talks, but neither of them are saying anything that makes you think that he's there, neither would come to Texas Tech, because I think they both would be very, very interested.
- 51:00SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and and we should we should bring this up.
- 51:03SPEAKER_02: Uh, there's been some rumors out there swirling around the Twitter sphere from both local and national media that the Bryals are a candidate.
- 51:12SPEAKER_02: Uh, I can't tell you the disappointment level uh that I would have for Texas Tech if they stoop so low as to hire NR Bryles to coach Texas Tech.
- 51:24SPEAKER_02: I can't tell you how bad of an idea that is.
- 51:26SPEAKER_02: Everybody needs to get that out of their mind.
- 51:29SPEAKER_02: Uh, I'm I'm a little disappointed that we have a guy on the search committee that is a Biles believer.
- 51:34SPEAKER_02: I don't like that part of it.
- 51:35SPEAKER_02: Uh, he's a he's just a PR nightmare.
- 51:39SPEAKER_02: He hasn't coached in forever.
- 51:41SPEAKER_02: He's not he's not a good candidate.
- 51:43SPEAKER_02: He's like 65.
- 51:44SPEAKER_02: He doesn't need to be in the discussion.
- 51:46SPEAKER_02: I hate that he is in the discussion every single time that we talk about a potential next Texas Tech football coach.
- 51:53SPEAKER_02: I hate it.
- 51:53SPEAKER_02: Uh, everybody that is pro R Bries is wrong.
- 51:58SPEAKER_01: This is a very anti-R Bries podcast.
- 52:02SPEAKER_01: What you would be doing is let's okay, let's ignore the controversy.
- 52:06SPEAKER_01: What you're doing is you're hiring a geriatric coach.
- 52:09SPEAKER_01: The guy would be 66 when he comes on.
- 52:12SPEAKER_01: He didn't even succeed at the at the high school level, he's not even coaching there anymore here in Texas.
- 52:17SPEAKER_01: You're talking about a guy that's so far removed from the college game, it might as well be ancient history.
- 52:23SPEAKER_01: It just it doesn't make any pragmatic uh sense of hiring Arp Riles.
- 52:29SPEAKER_01: And also to mention, think about the stain it would put on Texas Tech University just to maybe win some football games for maybe three years at most.
- 52:42SPEAKER_01: Like you think about the daughters, think about the sisters, think about your nieces going to Texas Tech University with an Arp Riles as the head coach.
- 52:49SPEAKER_01: It's not worth the soul of the university to hire Arp Riles and to even pivot to Kendall Biles.
- 52:58SPEAKER_01: I need a guy that's a proven builder.
- 53:00SPEAKER_01: I need a guy that's a proven head coach.
- 53:01SPEAKER_01: I don't need a flyer on an offensive coordinator that's been all over the place and is currently at Arkansas, who's okay at Arkansas.
- 53:10SPEAKER_01: It's just I what I need is a builder.
- 53:12SPEAKER_01: I don't need some sort of baggage name that has some West Texas ties because his dad went to tech as head coach for Texas Tech University during such a pivotal time in our program.
- 53:24SPEAKER_01: This is a very dire time for Texas Tech football.
- 53:28SPEAKER_01: If we mess this up one more time, people will start to consider us on the same level as Rutgers in Kansas, rightfully so.
- 53:34SPEAKER_01: We need a winner, and I think that's with trailer or dikes, and it's not with the Bryals family.
- 53:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah, not to mention he is an absolute garbage human.
- 53:44SPEAKER_02: Um, miss me with that he got exonerated, miss me with uh they all know he's gonna win.
- 53:52SPEAKER_02: Miss me with all that because none of it's true.
- 53:54SPEAKER_02: I mean, yeah, he got exonerated by whatever the NCAA.
- 53:58SPEAKER_02: That doesn't mean Jack.
- 54:01SPEAKER_02: You know, he was the leader, he was the guy there at the top during one of the biggest scandals in college football history, and I want no part of that man in Lubbock at Texas Tech.
- 54:13SPEAKER_02: I want nothing to do with it, and that's what I'll say on it.
- 54:16SPEAKER_01: And the candidates are too good, like we have too good of a we have two 10 out of 10 choices in front of us, and you just want to go to what Baylor was able to do for a short bid six years ago, six years ago, and now Baylor is one of the most hated programs in the entire country for it.
- 54:38SPEAKER_01: Like, do you do you want that just for maybe three years?
- 54:42SPEAKER_01: The guy is 66 years old when he comes to Texas Tech University.
- 54:46SPEAKER_01: Do you really think players want to go play for him after what he's done?
- 54:50SPEAKER_01: Do you think mamas of the players are cool with that?
- 54:53SPEAKER_01: And you know, these players with who have sisters who maybe have daughters as well want to come play for this man.
- 55:00SPEAKER_01: No, cut it out, we're better than that.
- 55:03SPEAKER_01: And like I said, the candidates ahead of us are too good.
- 55:07SPEAKER_01: Like, I I controversy aside, I want trailer instead of Bryals without the controversy.
- 55:14SPEAKER_01: I want the next thing, I don't need yesterday's thing.
- 55:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we don't need it.
- 55:20SPEAKER_02: This is the this is the Mike Leach argument, too.
- 55:22SPEAKER_02: You know, yesterday's thing.
- 55:24SPEAKER_02: It's it is what it is.
- 55:25SPEAKER_02: Love Mike Leach, love what he did for Texas Tech.
- 55:28SPEAKER_02: He's old news, he is, just like Art Bryals is.
- 55:30SPEAKER_02: So everybody get that out of your minds, throw it away.
- 55:34SPEAKER_02: The more people that are anti-art Bryals is good for Texas Tech and good for the perception of the university.
- 55:41SPEAKER_02: So get that out of your minds.
- 55:43SPEAKER_02: That's what we'll say on it.
- 55:45SPEAKER_02: What are your closing statements uh for this whole thing?
- 55:49SPEAKER_01: I think this is a Jeff Trailer podcast here going forward, and what I'm very grateful for is that Jeff Trailer is at UTSA.
- 55:58SPEAKER_01: That is a program that cannot outbid, cannot out resource, cannot out fan base, cannot out campus, Texas Tech University.
- 56:06SPEAKER_01: So I think you get Jeff Trailer for a bargain compared to Sonny Dykes, and that's no knock on Sonny Dykes, that's more of a respect to SMU, what SMU can offer Sonny and what he's built there.
- 56:18SPEAKER_01: So I feel very good about Texas Tech's future because come next year.
- 56:23SPEAKER_01: I really do think we're talking about Coach Trailer or Coach Dykes.
- 56:26SPEAKER_01: Um, so that and you really cannot feel better about those names than you really can anybody else.
- 56:33SPEAKER_01: So that's that's my closing statement about it.
- 56:36SPEAKER_01: Um, and I'm sure there's other guys we can talk about more next in the next few episodes, they'll always keep popping up.
- 56:41SPEAKER_01: Uh, we didn't even bring up Carthell as Stephen F.
- 56:44SPEAKER_01: Austin, a West Texas boy.
- 56:45SPEAKER_01: Um, but it's just there's not a lack of options.
- 56:49SPEAKER_01: So please give up on the Bryals crap because we're better than that, first of all.
- 56:53SPEAKER_01: And second of all, we just we have a lot to look forward to.
- 56:55SPEAKER_01: We have a lot to offer.
- 56:56SPEAKER_01: Just remember that.
- 56:57SPEAKER_01: We already ranted about it.
- 56:58SPEAKER_01: What about you?
- 57:00SPEAKER_02: Uh my closing statement is meep meep.
- 57:02SPEAKER_02: Uh meep, meep, baby.
- 57:04SPEAKER_02: Meep, meep.
- 57:05SPEAKER_02: I want Jeff Trailer.
- 57:07SPEAKER_02: This is a pro Jeff Trailer podcast.
- 57:09SPEAKER_02: Uh, I hope that works out.
- 57:11SPEAKER_02: I would be happy with a lot of other options, but Jeff Trailer is my clear number one.
- 57:16SPEAKER_02: And and honestly, uh, you know, thanks to Matt Wells.
- 57:20SPEAKER_02: He he he's a good dude.
- 57:22SPEAKER_02: He's a uh uh a good person at heart, has a great family.
- 57:26SPEAKER_02: Uh, you know, did did what he could here.
- 57:29SPEAKER_02: It just wasn't enough.
- 57:30SPEAKER_02: And you know, that's unfortunate that it didn't work out.
- 57:32SPEAKER_02: But uh, you know, I wish him the best moving forward.
- 57:35SPEAKER_02: We both do.
- 57:36SPEAKER_02: Uh, and and you know, I hope he lands on his well, he's gonna land on his feet just fine.
- 57:39SPEAKER_02: He just got a nice little buyout there.
- 57:42SPEAKER_02: So uh, you know, that that part I don't feel too bad, but uh, you know, uh be kind to him and his family.
- 57:48SPEAKER_02: He he, you know, it's not and it is kind of his fault, but you know, he's he's a good dude.
- 57:54SPEAKER_02: That's how well is that done.
- 57:56SPEAKER_02: He's not yeah, he just he just it's a little too hard of a job for him.
- 58:00SPEAKER_02: He couldn't coach at this level, and we noticed it.
- 58:03SPEAKER_02: I hope he goes back to G5 and I hope he finds a home back, you know, kind of in the Utah area or whatever.
- 58:09SPEAKER_02: And I hope he succeeds.
- 58:10SPEAKER_02: I really do.
- 58:10SPEAKER_02: I wish him the best.
- 58:11SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, no doubt.
- 58:13SPEAKER_01: So it's like it's like Cliff Kingsbury, except less so because you know, Cliff's one of our own.
- 58:17SPEAKER_01: But he's gonna go on and find a great spot to live in, and maybe eventually he will become a power pipe coach that can knows how to succeed.
- 58:24SPEAKER_01: But clearly the guy was over his head.
- 58:26SPEAKER_01: You just he wasn't ready yet.
- 58:27SPEAKER_01: But uh, this is not an anti-Matt Wells podcast, it never was and still isn't.
- 58:31SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no doubt.
- 58:32SPEAKER_02: That's a good way to put it.
- 58:34SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, I'm I'm still running for this team moving forward, it's gonna be fun.
- 58:37SPEAKER_02: Uh, a lot more fun watching this team with basically zero expectations now.
- 58:42SPEAKER_02: Um, so you know, I I hope we yeah, hope hope Sonny Cumbie pulls out some some good stuff here.
- 58:50SPEAKER_02: Uh, hope you know we get a couple wins and we potentially make a bowl game.
- 58:53SPEAKER_02: And you know, we're right back there.
- 58:55SPEAKER_02: And I hope we find the next guy here and the fan base rallies around him like we rallied around Mark Adams, you know.
- 59:02SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 59:03SPEAKER_01: Like it we've we've shown that we're ready to support it.
- 59:06SPEAKER_01: Just give us a product to support.
- 59:08SPEAKER_01: You know, we just want something to believe in.
- 59:10SPEAKER_01: We just want something that competes every single Saturday where we believe, oh yeah, there's a chance, and especially at home where we're like, oh yeah, Lubing is a tough place to win.
- 59:18SPEAKER_01: That's all we want again.
- 59:20SPEAKER_01: And I think that our candidates are good choices to make that a reality once more.
- 59:24SPEAKER_02: No doubt.
- 59:25SPEAKER_02: So that's what we'll say on it.
- 59:28SPEAKER_02: Um, I'm sure we've gained a few uh more listeners to this episode.
- 59:32SPEAKER_02: I know we gained a ton more followers on Twitter after this whole weekend's debacle.
- 59:36SPEAKER_02: So if you are new to the program, we appreciate y'all listening.
- 59:40SPEAKER_02: Hope you enjoyed it.
- 59:41SPEAKER_02: Uh, we do a song of the week segment every week on the Talking Tech Pod just to give you all something to listen to, something we've been vibing with lately.
- 59:48SPEAKER_02: Maybe it's topical, maybe it's not.
- 59:50SPEAKER_02: Tristan, what is your song of the week?
- 59:53SPEAKER_01: Can I just pat me and you on the back for making it through this recording?
- 59:57SPEAKER_01: Because you and I have never had to do this many recordings, get an episode out.
- 1:00:02SPEAKER_01: And I am uh a few beers in.
- 1:00:04SPEAKER_01: Like normally, I'm just normally I just sit there and sip on two or three in an episode.
- 1:00:08SPEAKER_01: But boy, I have like slayed my fridge to get this out.
- 1:00:12SPEAKER_01: So I hope I don't sound too stupid.
- 1:00:14SPEAKER_01: I hope my thoughts are still coherent.
- 1:00:15SPEAKER_01: Um, but for my song of the week, uh, we got we you and I have already established a theme, it's San Antonio, and you and I were quite biased towards the Alamo City.
- 1:00:24SPEAKER_01: Uh, you and I met and grew up there since we were young lads.
- 1:00:28SPEAKER_01: Uh, and I'm gonna go with a local guy, he is Garrett T Caps.
- 1:00:32SPEAKER_01: And with this one, I'm gonna go with Born in San Antonio.
- 1:00:37SPEAKER_01: It's just it's a great San Antonio anthem because he just sits there and lists everything any San Antonio native would ever know and want, and it's just a jam.
- 1:00:46SPEAKER_01: And I because the reason why I bring this up is because you and I both want Mr.
- 1:00:50SPEAKER_01: Jeff Trailer.
- 1:00:52SPEAKER_03: Deep Bruce Roots and a Voxor Gone.
- 1:00:56SPEAKER_03: A glue and shaker in Tex Mex tone and saying, She's about a move, and I was gone.
- 1:01:05SPEAKER_03: Back home to San Tone.
- 1:01:08SPEAKER_02: Yes, we do.
- 1:01:09SPEAKER_02: We both won Jeff Trailer.
- 1:01:11SPEAKER_02: I also, this was not planned, by the way, but in our previous recording, we both came up with San Antonio songs of the week.
- 1:01:18SPEAKER_02: So we're gonna do it here.
- 1:01:20SPEAKER_02: My song of the week is San Antonio by Randy Rogers Band.
- 1:01:24SPEAKER_02: Uh, it's the anthem.
- 1:01:25SPEAKER_02: It like you said, uh 210 till we die.
- 1:01:28SPEAKER_02: Uh, it's a fantastic city, most underrated city, uh, potentially in America, you know.
- 1:01:33SPEAKER_02: Uh, that's all I'm saying.
- 1:01:34SPEAKER_02: Definitely in Texas.
- 1:01:35SPEAKER_02: Definitely in Texas.
- 1:01:36SPEAKER_02: It's fantastic.
- 1:01:37SPEAKER_02: Besides Lubbock, of course.
- 1:01:38SPEAKER_02: Of course, of course.
- 1:01:40SPEAKER_02: We love Lubbock, we love San Antonio.
- 1:01:42SPEAKER_02: This is a pro Lubbock, pro-San Antonio podcast here.
- 1:01:46SPEAKER_02: Uh, but yeah, San Antonio by the Randy Rogers band, it's fantastic.
- 1:01:50SPEAKER_02: It uh it just highlights uh again, a lot like your song, just highlights a lot of areas around San Antonio that are memorable.
- 1:01:57SPEAKER_02: He really lays it out there in a great way in this song.
- 1:02:00SPEAKER_02: Uh, so that's my song of the week, San Antonio Randy Rogers band.
- 1:02:20SPEAKER_01: It's no surprise that arguably the greatest Texas country band of all time has a song dedicated to that area.
- 1:02:27SPEAKER_01: So is that a hot take?
- 1:02:28SPEAKER_01: Is that a hot take?
- 1:02:30SPEAKER_01: That's not a hot take in my opinion.
- 1:02:31SPEAKER_01: I really do in the Texas country genre alone, I think the Randy Rogers band is the greatest of all time.
- 1:02:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:02:38SPEAKER_02: Wow, okay.
- 1:02:39SPEAKER_02: I know, I mean, I'm not too into the Texas country scene to truly know if that's a hot take or not.
- 1:02:45SPEAKER_02: I know they're they're one of the more popular ones of the Texas specific genre, but uh yeah, man, that's that's a that's a take.
- 1:02:54SPEAKER_01: I'm not saying that it's George Straight, who is the greatest country artist of all time.
- 1:02:58SPEAKER_01: I'm just saying, like, in the genre alone, and really the only argument comes in is when we start like you know mincing words and saying, like, oh no, but in the red dirt, turnpike tribadours are.
- 1:03:07SPEAKER_01: But I think for a body of work, Randy Rogers band, even Trump's turnpike.
- 1:03:12SPEAKER_01: So that's probably the hot take, but I don't think it's that hot.
- 1:03:14SPEAKER_01: That's pretty lukewarm in my opinion.
- 1:03:16SPEAKER_01: Okay, fair.
- 1:03:17SPEAKER_02: Maybe I don't know enough about it, which I probably don't.
- 1:03:20SPEAKER_02: So uh we yeah, so that's gonna do it for this pod.
