Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: You're listening to a DM podcast.
- 0:03Speaker 2: We'll try to keep it as nice as we can,
- 0:05Speaker 2: but you might hear the occasional swear word in No
- 0:07Speaker 2: Dribble Don't Tell Mom. Hello, and welcome to No Dribble,
- 0:23Speaker 2: the podcast where we talk about net fail and we
- 0:25Speaker 2: talk about everything else besides. I am Carolyn Swindell and
- 0:28Speaker 2: I'm in the studio in Sydney, and this is a
- 0:30Speaker 2: bit of an unusual week for us. We've got a
- 0:32Speaker 2: bit of a change up. I'm going to ask my
- 0:35Speaker 2: two microphone comrades today to introduce one another. And first
- 0:38Speaker 2: of all, I'm going to throw very far away over
- 0:41Speaker 2: to the wild West.
- 0:43Speaker 1: Well west me yes, okay, so the voice is obvious,
- 0:47Speaker 1: but I'm introducing my dear friend Elizabeth. Elizabeth, Elizabeth, Welcome, Elizabeth,
- 0:54Speaker 1: it's great to be here.
- 0:55Speaker 3: Thank you, Susan, it's lovely to see you. The formalities
- 0:59Speaker 3: our best and Elizabeth.
- 1:00Speaker 2: This is why I asked them to introduce one another,
- 1:02Speaker 2: because this is quite unusual. Obviously we have Lize Ellis,
- 1:05Speaker 2: but we also have Sue Gordy Gordian with us today,
- 1:08Speaker 2: but Susan and Elizabeth today joining us for notable.
- 1:11Speaker 1: Yes, Catherine and we call Coxy Catherine too well. I
- 1:15Speaker 1: don't know why we do it, but we've always had
- 1:17Speaker 1: it in commentary, and I know when Susan is being
- 1:20Speaker 1: very serious in commentary because she used to turn to
- 1:23Speaker 1: me and say, Elizabeth Ellis, Wow, either I have to
- 1:28Speaker 1: make a serious point or someone's died.
- 1:30Speaker 3: I do actually recall.
- 1:32Speaker 1: It was just a game we were doing, and I
- 1:33Speaker 1: felt like it was quite a serious moment and I
- 1:35Speaker 1: just looked at you and I said, Elizabeth, what.
- 1:37Speaker 3: Do you think about that?
- 1:39Speaker 1: And you looked at me and there was silence on
- 1:41Speaker 1: the mike. But then it kind of evolved.
- 1:45Speaker 3: And people used to come in and like, I loved
- 1:47Speaker 3: just calling each other so formally.
- 1:49Speaker 1: I know, it's very formal, and then Coxy calls you Gordian,
- 1:54Speaker 1: and it's like, oh, okay, I think it's just you know,
- 1:57Speaker 1: I think you and I are the more cerebral of
- 1:59Speaker 1: the relations and you're in Choxy. You know, you descend
- 2:02Speaker 1: into the Kardashians on My bar Loba High bar Loba.
- 2:08Speaker 2: But anyway, Gordie, thanks for joining us this week. Kat's
- 2:11Speaker 2: got a well deserved week off because she needs to
- 2:13Speaker 2: rest her voice. Basically, she's got a big seas in
- 2:15Speaker 2: her head, and she absolutely pushed herself to the wall
- 2:18Speaker 2: at Team Girls Cup and it was a schedule week off.
- 2:22Speaker 2: She's Catherine's voice will never run out. I'm sure, but
- 2:25Speaker 2: we're so excited that you're here.
- 2:26Speaker 1: I'm thrilled to be here. It's a little early over
- 2:28Speaker 1: here in the West. Well, not really, eight twenty.
- 2:30Speaker 3: I'm at work.
- 2:32Speaker 1: Well, I'm not only at work. Can I just say
- 2:34Speaker 1: just quickly, I'm not only at work. I had to
- 2:36Speaker 1: come in at seven this morning because I got home
- 2:38Speaker 1: last night and Rose told me the water's out, and
- 2:42Speaker 1: I'm like, well, what have you done about it?
- 2:43Speaker 3: All day? She goes, Oh, I rang a plumber, but
- 2:45Speaker 3: he's coming tomorrow. I'm like, I can't shower it. So
- 2:47Speaker 3: I had to come into.
- 2:48Speaker 1: Work and shower and then come up and do the podcast.
- 2:50Speaker 1: I've never showered at work. Oh feeling it's terrible. I
- 2:54Speaker 1: was in the I don't know what do you call it,
- 2:55Speaker 1: the multipurpose change room, where you're standing in a pig
- 2:57Speaker 1: cubicle and feel like you're naked to the world.
- 3:00Speaker 3: I don't know. There's no one here, but it was
- 3:03Speaker 3: just awkward. Is it a communal shower? No? It's not
- 3:06Speaker 3: a communal Actually, I was in do you know, Elizabeth,
- 3:10Speaker 3: where I was.
- 3:10Speaker 1: I was in the drug testing room, not the drug
- 3:15Speaker 1: taking room, let's be drugs testing room.
- 3:18Speaker 3: That's next door.
- 3:19Speaker 1: So yeah, I had a shower in the drug taking
- 3:21Speaker 1: and testing room this morning.
- 3:22Speaker 2: And then so who usually showers in the drug testing room?
- 3:25Speaker 1: I actually don't know, Like to be blatantly honest with you,
- 3:27Speaker 1: who builds a plan has a drug testing room that
- 3:29Speaker 1: puts a shower room, I don't know. I don't know
- 3:32Speaker 1: that it's ever been used. Therefore it was potentially quite polling.
- 3:35Speaker 2: But Christine, well maybe this is your birthday present, the
- 3:38Speaker 2: first person to ever use that shower. Happy birthday for yesterday.
- 3:42Speaker 3: Thanks so much. And what a thrilling gift, the gift
- 3:46Speaker 3: of no water.
- 3:47Speaker 1: Maybe with the drug testing room, they've got the shower
- 3:51Speaker 1: in there, because sometimes you need somewhere private that's bigger
- 3:54Speaker 1: than a toilet cubicle for your drug testing, because there's
- 3:57Speaker 1: got to be two people. There's like the person peeing
- 3:59Speaker 1: in the up and the person squatting down watching the
- 4:01Speaker 1: pe come out, which is what a great job, horrific.
- 4:05Speaker 3: Yeah, well I know a few people who do that.
- 4:07Speaker 3: John apparently it pays really well. But anyway, they.
- 4:11Speaker 2: Are they medically qualified?
- 4:13Speaker 3: Is that? What?
- 4:13Speaker 2: How do you? How do you qualify to do that job?
- 4:15Speaker 3: Do you like?
- 4:16Speaker 2: Because I've seen my kids piss a lot, so I
- 4:18Speaker 2: feel like I'm qualified.
- 4:21Speaker 1: Yeah, but your problem is you would crack a joke.
- 4:22Speaker 1: You need to be quite serious because when you're actually
- 4:25Speaker 1: the person peeing in the cup, the last thing you
- 4:27Speaker 1: want is for any sort of personality to be evident
- 4:30Speaker 1: in the person watching you.
- 4:31Speaker 3: Befair enough, it's humiliating, Liz.
- 4:35Speaker 1: I don't know what about your friends and their age,
- 4:37Speaker 1: but I do feel like this is a there's an
- 4:40Speaker 1: age level.
- 4:41Speaker 3: Of people do this job. I want to say this
- 4:43Speaker 3: really not sleep.
- 4:45Speaker 2: You want a level of maturity.
- 4:47Speaker 1: I feel like there needs to be a level of
- 4:48Speaker 1: maturity and that usually kicks in when your hair turns gray.
- 4:51Speaker 1: So so I'm ready, you're ready, I am ready, right,
- 4:55Speaker 1: I'll bust out the forms.
- 4:57Speaker 2: Secretly, I'm ready to, but I have a relationship with
- 5:00Speaker 2: Dutch hairdresser every five weeks that sorts for me keeps
- 5:03Speaker 2: me unqualified for that job.
- 5:06Speaker 3: I think I would keep going down that path if
- 5:08Speaker 3: I were you.
- 5:10Speaker 2: I'm not ready to stop being a brunette. Are you No.
- 5:14Speaker 2: It's like someone's telling me you're not going to be
- 5:16Speaker 2: short anymore. It's like, well, who the hell am I
- 5:18Speaker 2: if I'm not a brunette anymore. It's quite weird. I
- 5:20Speaker 2: know that one day I'm just going to have to
- 5:22Speaker 2: come to grips with it, but it just sort of
- 5:23Speaker 2: feels like, oh, I'm not quite ready for that yet.
- 5:26Speaker 1: Well, you know, here's something that actually was a good
- 5:28Speaker 1: outcome of me deciding to embrace my silver was that
- 5:31Speaker 1: I saved four hundred bucks and a half a day
- 5:33Speaker 1: a month. Yes, I saved that daily though I have
- 5:36Speaker 1: a partner who's a hairdresser.
- 5:39Speaker 3: Yeah. Well, you know, not all of us selected wisely
- 5:42Speaker 3: like you did. I'm married to meet Trey.
- 5:48Speaker 2: Can I just do a quick audit of number of
- 5:51Speaker 2: family members with their arms in a cast at the moment?
- 5:55Speaker 2: So cat still has one? I have one in my house.
- 5:57Speaker 2: Do we have any increase on one on two?
- 6:00Speaker 3: No takers?
- 6:01Speaker 2: Oh that's good, okay?
- 6:02Speaker 3: No.
- 6:03Speaker 1: And you know, my daughter played in a netball carnival
- 6:06Speaker 1: at the Gold Coast on last Saturday afternoon evening, and
- 6:10Speaker 1: just before their first game, the heavens opened and bucketed
- 6:13Speaker 1: down and I thought, here we go. I can see
- 6:16Speaker 1: a cast coming. But unusually she she didn't hit the ground,
- 6:20Speaker 1: which is highly unusual for her. And so still I
- 6:23Speaker 1: say this, touching all the wood that I possibly can,
- 6:26Speaker 1: there is no increase.
- 6:28Speaker 3: We are nervous in our house.
- 6:30Speaker 2: How'd they go in the carnival?
- 6:31Speaker 3: They won.
- 6:33Speaker 1: That's amazing, it's really exciting. So and in the web, yeah, absolutely,
- 6:39Speaker 1: And they only had seven players because half of their
- 6:41Speaker 1: team were away at a basketball tournament.
- 6:43Speaker 2: So come hiorities.
- 6:48Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 6:48Speaker 1: Anyhow, so now they did, they won, They did well,
- 6:51Speaker 1: but happily no broken bones, No bones are broken in
- 6:53Speaker 1: the making of that winner's trophy.
- 6:56Speaker 3: Terrific, fantastic.
- 6:57Speaker 2: So, Gordy, you are very busy the moment. Yes, we're
- 7:02Speaker 2: very lucky to get you.
- 7:03Speaker 3: Well a am in the morning, you'll get me.
- 7:05Speaker 2: No, that is good. So, Gordie, you might not be
- 7:08Speaker 2: aware of this, but we've had quite an exciting week
- 7:10Speaker 2: here in the No Dribble world in that we launched
- 7:13Speaker 2: the Valor Dribblers Tipping comp last week, which is very exciting,
- 7:17Speaker 2: and we had our first hundred tippers, which was that
- 7:20Speaker 2: was in minutes that we had though that hundred field
- 7:24Speaker 2: went into the draw thanks to Vallop before a signed
- 7:27Speaker 2: Thunderbirds Stress and Aaron from New South Wales one that.
- 7:30Speaker 2: But what I'm loving is, as I suspected with the Dribblers,
- 7:33Speaker 2: we have very many creative tipping aliases. So I'll start
- 7:38Speaker 2: with an easy one and we'll see if we can
- 7:39Speaker 2: work out who this is. We have Lizzie Legs and
- 7:41Speaker 2: Coxy Chaos signed up for it, and the third in
- 7:45Speaker 2: that holy unholy trinity is kazlov Wd's so that's me.
- 7:49Speaker 3: But we have here.
- 7:50Speaker 2: We have here if you need eat, sleep, Netball repeat
- 7:54Speaker 2: center of attention, which I think that's a great one.
- 7:57Speaker 2: I prefer quidditch. Not sure how they're going to guard
- 7:59Speaker 2: from the tipping many references to the tea Birds. We
- 8:03Speaker 2: also have go Berties twenty two Swiss to win twenty
- 8:06Speaker 2: twenty five. This one I particularly like is I know
- 8:10Speaker 2: netball now? This I happen to know thanks to one
- 8:12Speaker 2: of the dribblers writing to me is the NRL loving
- 8:16Speaker 2: partner of one of our dribblers who is desperate to
- 8:18Speaker 2: win this comp because his partner won his work NRL
- 8:23Speaker 2: tipping comp last year, so he wants to sweep in
- 8:25Speaker 2: with his I know, Netball alias there and win our
- 8:29Speaker 2: tipping comp So but you know, I'm loving to see
- 8:32Speaker 2: the creative aliases and looking forward to seeing more over
- 8:35Speaker 2: the next couple of weeks.
- 8:36Speaker 3: Do you know what frightens me about tipping comps?
- 8:39Speaker 1: Liz and we used to say, we used to say
- 8:41Speaker 1: this a little bit in commentary, like you know, as commentators,
- 8:43Speaker 1: you're supposed to know a lot, and you do prep accordingly,
- 8:48Speaker 1: but I tell you there is never ever enough information
- 8:53Speaker 1: that we would know compared to some of the fans
- 8:55Speaker 1: that exist in the game enter competitions like this, like
- 8:59Speaker 1: it's in so like I couldn't. My brain doesn't have
- 9:02Speaker 1: the capacity to hold that much information.
- 9:04Speaker 2: No, well, you've got a lot of other information to
- 9:06Speaker 2: hold in there during the season, don't you.
- 9:08Speaker 3: So it's like yeah, but you know, it's not a lie.
- 9:12Speaker 1: Sometimes you would become I would be commentating and someone
- 9:15Speaker 1: would either send me a message luck my phone, or
- 9:18Speaker 1: they'd send it on social media with a piece of
- 9:20Speaker 1: information that I just did not know, and that you.
- 9:23Speaker 3: Go, oh, that's really good. How do they know that? Yeah? Yeah,
- 9:26Speaker 3: I'm going to use it in commentary and pretend it's mine.
- 9:30Speaker 2: Do you check the bone of fardis or do you
- 9:32Speaker 2: just go.
- 9:34Speaker 3: You've got to hope that what they're sending is on
- 9:36Speaker 3: the money. That wouldn't it.
- 9:38Speaker 1: It would be the worst because then you really can't
- 9:40Speaker 1: say to your boss when they say, why did you
- 9:42Speaker 1: say that? Because someone said it on the socials, that
- 9:45Speaker 1: doesn't really wash.
- 9:46Speaker 3: And I believe the socials.
- 9:48Speaker 2: Yes, absolutely, Gordy, I want to say, I reckon, you're
- 9:51Speaker 2: not that great at tipping.
- 9:53Speaker 1: To be honest with you, I bow out of most
- 9:55Speaker 1: tipping competitions. I bow out of most quiz nights. I
- 9:59Speaker 1: just I'm just I don't know what it is. Maybe
- 10:02Speaker 1: just dumb. I don't know, but I feel like I've
- 10:04Speaker 1: got a lot of information in my brain, but when
- 10:06Speaker 1: the questions ask I can't pull it out at the
- 10:07Speaker 1: right time.
- 10:08Speaker 2: I could tell you it's not that you're dumb. I
- 10:10Speaker 2: think it's possibly a lack of attention. But given that
- 10:14Speaker 2: you're not very good, perhaps you'd like to join our
- 10:16Speaker 2: tipping comp because we have a within our tip in
- 10:19Speaker 2: comp we have the opportunity for people to form their
- 10:21Speaker 2: own little groups and they compete against their own friends,
- 10:24Speaker 2: and so we have a no dribble hosts and heroes
- 10:27Speaker 2: tipping comp within that could you join it? And then
- 10:30Speaker 2: I might not come first?
- 10:32Speaker 3: So who will I be against? I'll be against listen
- 10:34Speaker 3: you and Cat?
- 10:35Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, Oh I'm in while you fantastic. That's exciting.
- 10:39Speaker 2: And when we're writing about some other people who've been
- 10:41Speaker 2: guests on the podcast or I don't know what the
- 10:43Speaker 2: rule you can't win anything. None of us can win anything,
- 10:45Speaker 2: I'm afraid. But it's for the joy and for the
- 10:50Speaker 2: shit stirring.
- 10:50Speaker 3: I guess do I get to pick a name? What's
- 10:53Speaker 3: your nickname?
- 10:54Speaker 1: Oh, it'll be Gaudy delicious or nice G Train, G Train.
- 11:01Speaker 2: We're all on board the okay, fantastic. So everyone should
- 11:03Speaker 2: be setting up their own groups, but this is our
- 11:05Speaker 2: group and it will be very interesting to see. There
- 11:07Speaker 2: is a lunch on the line between the three of us,
- 11:09Speaker 2: and I think that should be extended to everyone who
- 11:11Speaker 2: was in our little group there so and it's like
- 11:13Speaker 2: a it's a white tablecloth lunch. We've agreed, it's not
- 11:16Speaker 2: a sandwich. I had to Cat made me agree to
- 11:19Speaker 2: that because it was looking very likely on pathform that
- 11:22Speaker 2: I would be buying lunch.
- 11:23Speaker 3: So no carried eggs.
- 11:24Speaker 2: Well, you know, I've been a curried eg sandwich.
- 11:27Speaker 1: I had one yesterday with lettuce.
- 11:30Speaker 3: Curried eggs with lettuce?
- 11:32Speaker 2: Nice?
- 11:32Speaker 1: And can I just ask a question as we talk
- 11:34Speaker 1: of carried egg I actually said this to someone yesterday.
- 11:37Speaker 3: Have you ever bought a curried egg sandwich with lettuce?
- 11:40Speaker 3: Not with white bread? No? But I don't put lettuce
- 11:43Speaker 3: on my carried egg sandwiches, you know, but I did.
- 11:45Speaker 3: Neither of the shop did it for me.
- 11:47Speaker 2: I really I always put the lettuce on my egg sandwiches.
- 11:50Speaker 2: I think it's in the constitution that it has to
- 11:52Speaker 2: be on white bread, doesn't well, yeah, it's.
- 11:56Speaker 1: Like I would prefer it not white bread. I would like,
- 11:58Speaker 1: you know, like a brown or multi grain. However, I
- 12:00Speaker 1: don't ever recall seeing a curried egg sandwich with or without,
- 12:04Speaker 1: let us Elizabeth, on anything other than white bread.
- 12:07Speaker 3: I just think you're right.
- 12:09Speaker 1: I think you're right, and I think like I am
- 12:12Speaker 1: the anti white bread Nazi in my household, and I
- 12:16Speaker 1: tried to. I've got my kids eating whole meal, which
- 12:19Speaker 1: is all I can hope for. They won't go with
- 12:20Speaker 1: whole grain. But I do make an exception for curried
- 12:23Speaker 1: egg sandwiches because it should be on fresh white, soft
- 12:26Speaker 1: bread with lots of butter.
- 12:28Speaker 2: So I did that. I read the nutrition panels in
- 12:31Speaker 2: the supermarket one day because my children just, you know,
- 12:35Speaker 2: they were really resisting all of the bread that I
- 12:36Speaker 2: brought into the How it's not significantly different anymore. You
- 12:39Speaker 2: think it's going to be a whole lot more fiber
- 12:41Speaker 2: or a whole lot more in a whole lot less
- 12:43Speaker 2: sugar in the I much prefer bread with grains in it.
- 12:46Speaker 2: But actually, when you look at the nutrition panels on
- 12:48Speaker 2: some of the current white breads on the market, it's
- 12:52Speaker 2: not that different. So but what it is is trying
- 12:54Speaker 2: to develop your kid's palette, right, so they're not just
- 12:56Speaker 2: eating white bread when they're thirty five and asking for
- 12:59Speaker 2: tomatoes with every meal.
- 13:02Speaker 3: Is that evolution? Because or am I just I just
- 13:05Speaker 3: don't read the small.
- 13:06Speaker 2: I think that the white bread manufacturers, Big white Bread,
- 13:10Speaker 2: have realized that there is a movement against it and
- 13:12Speaker 2: have said we need to we need to do something
- 13:14Speaker 2: about this. So I suspect that they have, I have
- 13:17Speaker 2: made a conscious effort to make the white breads more
- 13:19Speaker 2: nutritious and be able to compete with the other breads.
- 13:22Speaker 2: So yeah, so I mean, there is a difference. It's
- 13:24Speaker 2: obviously there is slightly high fiber in the others, and
- 13:26Speaker 2: there is slightly more sugar in the white bread, but
- 13:28Speaker 2: it was not nearly as significant as I thought. So
- 13:32Speaker 2: guilt free. Here, eat what you'll bloody eat.
- 13:34Speaker 3: That's right with curried egg, lettuce, white bread. Love it.
- 13:37Speaker 2: Yeah, we're now a nutrition podcast.
- 13:40Speaker 1: Yes, that basically says, just eat food. I look at
- 13:46Speaker 1: who's on this screen and I'm like, Liz, yes, meat no.
- 13:51Speaker 2: So Gordy, my son is sixteen, and like for the
- 13:54Speaker 2: first and that's what I say to people when they
- 13:55Speaker 2: have younger kids and they're so worried about what the
- 13:57Speaker 2: kids eat at every meal and whatever, and it's really
- 14:00Speaker 2: looked after the nutrition of this kid. And then one
- 14:03Speaker 2: day he sat down to dinner and said, oh I
- 14:04Speaker 2: can't I can't eat them full. He'd had a can
- 14:06Speaker 2: of red Bull and a can of whipped cream, and
- 14:08Speaker 2: it's like, I just I feel like I've handed him
- 14:11Speaker 2: the keys to the Lamborghini and he's gone, I don't
- 14:14Speaker 2: know how to change gears. I'll just drive this thing
- 14:16Speaker 2: at eighty k's an hour in first gear. It's like,
- 14:18Speaker 2: this is like give up.
- 14:19Speaker 1: So I'm imagining the explosion in the mouth between the
- 14:22Speaker 1: red bull and the whipped crane.
- 14:24Speaker 2: Yeah. Oh, anyway, he's healthy. He played sports. Give up.
- 14:29Speaker 3: And I want to add to that.
- 14:31Speaker 1: We never did stuff like that, Liz, No, never, No,
- 14:34Speaker 1: we were always super innocently. It's so innocent, so innocent,
- 14:40Speaker 1: except for Catherine, but she's not here to defend herself.
- 14:46Speaker 2: So this is a beautiful segway for me because I
- 14:49Speaker 2: want to talk to you, Gordy, now that we have
- 14:51Speaker 2: you here in the hot seat. I want to talk
- 14:53Speaker 2: about so this is the things are serious now. All
- 14:56Speaker 2: of the super Ball teams are in full on training, nutrition, whatever.
- 15:01Speaker 2: I would love to hear about a week in the
- 15:04Speaker 2: life of the Fever, and specifically for you as a
- 15:07Speaker 2: coach there because I ignorantly perhaps, but that's the basis
- 15:12Speaker 2: of this podcast, be saying stuff that I know nothing about.
- 15:15Speaker 2: I assume that as a coach your hours are probably
- 15:19Speaker 2: about twice those of the players because you've got to
- 15:22Speaker 2: do whatever they're doing, but then you've got to do
- 15:24Speaker 2: all the prep as well. So I would love to
- 15:26Speaker 2: hear what's your week like? And you know, is anyone
- 15:30Speaker 2: telling you what to eat so you can stay the
- 15:32Speaker 2: course because this is a real marathon for.
- 15:34Speaker 3: You guys, Well, yeah, it is a marathon.
- 15:36Speaker 1: And certainly you can tell it's only two weeks away
- 15:39Speaker 1: from the start of the season because the entire environment
- 15:43Speaker 1: shifted as of Monday, Like, honestly, yeah, two weeks out.
- 15:47Speaker 3: It just shifts.
- 15:49Speaker 1: The emails, the tone, the atmosphere, the energy in the
- 15:53Speaker 1: whole system here just completely shift. So I think that's
- 15:56Speaker 1: kind of that's noticeable in terms of hours. I think
- 15:59Speaker 1: from a coaching perspective, you never switch off. As an example,
- 16:04Speaker 1: beyond the fact that I woke up thinking about this
- 16:06Speaker 1: podcast and doing it this morning, I genuinely did wake
- 16:09Speaker 1: up thinking about training, what we've got to get done,
- 16:12Speaker 1: what we've got to achieve, you know, what are the
- 16:14Speaker 1: final dots that we need to dot and tease to
- 16:17Speaker 1: cross before we get into you know, next week. And
- 16:21Speaker 1: where's athletes motivation at, what do we need to build up,
- 16:25Speaker 1: what do we need to tailor all those sorts of things.
- 16:28Speaker 1: But I mean, I play a really small role here
- 16:30Speaker 1: at Fever as far as coaching is concerned. It's led
- 16:32Speaker 1: by Dan Ryan and Sara Francis Bayman, and I sort
- 16:36Speaker 1: of float in the background. For about eight years now,
- 16:38Speaker 1: so and then I have this stupid third hat I
- 16:41Speaker 1: wear as general manager of the club, which is probably
- 16:43Speaker 1: the most exhausting role I have, which is very office bound,
- 16:47Speaker 1: which is where I sit right now. And I have
- 16:49Speaker 1: to say, in a shout out to all high performance
- 16:52Speaker 1: or general managers in sport around the world, it's an
- 16:54Speaker 1: ass of a job. I can't think of any other way.
- 16:58Speaker 1: It's a really tough beast of job. And just when
- 17:01Speaker 1: you think you've got some breathing space, it just changes.
- 17:05Speaker 1: Something happens and things change and you know you're in
- 17:08Speaker 1: crisis management and you know. So it's it's been a
- 17:13Speaker 1: huge rollercoaster for me. This is my fifth season as
- 17:17Speaker 1: general manager and one that I thought only only be
- 17:20Speaker 1: here for years. So yeah, it's a busy week from
- 17:23Speaker 1: Monday morning to you come in. I don't leave the
- 17:25Speaker 1: office until sort of six or seven at night, five
- 17:27Speaker 1: days a week for long yea, So how do you like?
- 17:31Speaker 1: What sort of mental gymnastics do you go through? Given
- 17:35Speaker 1: you actually hold three really important roles within the sport.
- 17:37Speaker 1: You're an assistant coach at Fever, You're the general manager
- 17:41Speaker 1: of Fever, and then you're also sitting commentary, and I
- 17:44Speaker 1: have always been amazed at your ability to just shutter
- 17:48Speaker 1: your roles with Fever off, and you are incredibly clear
- 17:52Speaker 1: eyed through your commentary.
- 17:54Speaker 3: I think I'm just wondering, like how do you do it?
- 17:56Speaker 1: Like what do you go through a process or is
- 17:58Speaker 1: it just something that comes naturally to you to do that?
- 18:00Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, you.
- 18:02Speaker 1: Know you dissect, but for commentary, Liz, like like, I'm
- 18:05Speaker 1: just a passion I'm a fan of the game. So like,
- 18:08Speaker 1: even though you know I would love Fever to win,
- 18:11Speaker 1: that's you know, that sits there. But I honestly, once
- 18:13Speaker 1: I step into the commentary environment, I genuinely and take
- 18:18Speaker 1: the game with excitement. And I can go back to
- 18:21Speaker 1: the twenty eighteen Grand Final that I commentated here at
- 18:24Speaker 1: in Perth at rac Arena with Fever, and I like
- 18:28Speaker 1: it was the first time Fever had ever played in
- 18:30Speaker 1: the Grand File. I was just excited about calling a
- 18:32Speaker 1: Grand Final, and when Fever lost, I had a small
- 18:34Speaker 1: moment of devastation, but then I was so excited watching
- 18:37Speaker 1: Lightning celebrate back to back victories and all these sorts
- 18:39Speaker 1: of So I just commentary, I find the easiest to do.
- 18:43Speaker 1: I think the biggest thing. And you know, again, I
- 18:46Speaker 1: don't often speak, probably this the first time I've publicly
- 18:48Speaker 1: spoken about this, to be honest with you, in the
- 18:50Speaker 1: time i've beat in the chairs. But I'm just really
- 18:52Speaker 1: grateful to this business that allows me to wear the
- 18:55Speaker 1: jewel hats. And when I came on as general manager,
- 18:57Speaker 1: it was a bit of a non negotiable for me
- 19:00Speaker 1: that I didn't have to depart from my two loves,
- 19:01Speaker 1: which is commentating and coaching, and didn't expect to be
- 19:05Speaker 1: in the GM role for as long. And I'm really
- 19:07Speaker 1: grateful to my high performance staff and also the playing
- 19:10Speaker 1: group who weather the storm with me when sometimes my
- 19:14Speaker 1: roles tend to cross and we have really open conversations
- 19:18Speaker 1: and they hold me accountable and yeah, it's I don't know, Liz, like,
- 19:22Speaker 1: it's not for everyone. I put a lot on my shoulders.
- 19:25Speaker 3: I won't last forever in these roles, but I'm grateful
- 19:28Speaker 3: while I'm here.
- 19:28Speaker 2: Can I ask about the GM role there?
- 19:30Speaker 3: So?
- 19:31Speaker 2: Is that when I hear GM, I think like that's
- 19:34Speaker 2: membership ticketing? Is that is this GM of the performance performance?
- 19:40Speaker 1: So I look after all the performance and all the
- 19:41Speaker 1: pathway that exists performance of fever and then the pathway
- 19:45Speaker 1: that feeds the clubs.
- 19:46Speaker 2: So okay, we have much we have a sense to
- 19:48Speaker 2: me now that.
- 19:48Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, we have a commercial department you know, and
- 19:52Speaker 1: all of that that spin the wheels of the ticketing
- 19:55Speaker 1: and the big dealers.
- 19:56Speaker 3: But you know, I sit in in sort of.
- 19:59Speaker 1: It's like the role that exists around the country and
- 20:02Speaker 1: most of the sporting clubs is called a high performance manager,
- 20:04Speaker 1: where you fundamentally just solely look after high performance, whereas
- 20:08Speaker 1: my role is a bit more broader here at netwull Wa,
- 20:11Speaker 1: where I'm a general manager, so I have executive responsibilities
- 20:14Speaker 1: and I also look after a more broader pathway, integration
- 20:17Speaker 1: and competitions, which is a lot there must.
- 20:21Speaker 2: Be quite exciting though, to have that visibility of the
- 20:24Speaker 2: pathways stuff, you know, I know, I know Vixen's have
- 20:27Speaker 2: a lot of homegrown talent and you guys have a
- 20:31Speaker 2: lot of homegrown talent too. Who people who live in
- 20:34Speaker 2: the West love living in the West and would prefer
- 20:36Speaker 2: not to leave the West if they possibly could. I
- 20:38Speaker 2: think the best time to be Western Australia was during COVID,
- 20:41Speaker 2: when it's like sorry West saying here, none of you
- 20:43Speaker 2: are coming over. This is our Please leave a thought
- 20:46Speaker 2: and I can totally understand that haven't been to WA
- 20:48Speaker 2: a couple of times in the last few years, but
- 20:50Speaker 2: it must be. It's fairly unique amongst the clubs to
- 20:55Speaker 2: have someone like you who has that oversight of the
- 20:57Speaker 2: pathways but also that intimate involvement at the elite level.
- 21:01Speaker 1: Yeah, it mixes in some clubs. Every club's got a
- 21:04Speaker 1: different setup and structure. When we meet collectively as a
- 21:06Speaker 1: national group, everyone's sort of got a little piece of
- 21:09Speaker 1: a few things, but what we centralize is that high
- 21:12Speaker 1: performance experience.
- 21:13Speaker 3: But it is exciting to have.
- 21:15Speaker 1: Like for me, it's probably been the biggest part of
- 21:17Speaker 1: the job since I've been here is how do we
- 21:20Speaker 1: integrate the West Australian Pathway to ensure Fever thrives and
- 21:23Speaker 1: sustain success. And so I loved getting my hands around
- 21:27Speaker 1: that and probably when I depart the role, I hope
- 21:29Speaker 1: that's my greatest legacy in terms of what I've brought
- 21:32Speaker 1: to the club while I've been here, which is you know,
- 21:34Speaker 1: at the moment, we do have a lot of internationals
- 21:36Speaker 1: in our team, and like most clubs, you want to
- 21:40Speaker 1: thrive on your pathway and make sure that there is
- 21:42Speaker 1: an avenue for your local talent to be able to
- 21:45Speaker 1: play at the top, and we truly believe in that.
- 21:47Speaker 1: But we also are a numbers game, you know, like
- 21:49Speaker 1: we have we have it's pretty excited, but we had
- 21:51Speaker 1: fifty thousand members here compared to a Victoria and a
- 21:54Speaker 1: New South Wales it's it over one hundred thousand and whatever.
- 21:57Speaker 1: So we're mindful that to compete at the top, we
- 22:00Speaker 1: have to be open minded about our talent. But we're
- 22:02Speaker 1: also making sure that we're you know, my job is
- 22:05Speaker 1: to make sure that there is a pipeline of West
- 22:07Speaker 1: Australian talent coming through and you know, look at Ruth
- 22:09Speaker 1: Ariyang that's coming through the system. Sunday's sister at the moment,
- 22:12Speaker 1: couldn't be more excited for her.
- 22:14Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 22:15Speaker 1: Yeah, and when Live Wilkinson we talked about her last week.
- 22:19Speaker 1: She's bloody amazing that Katherine Cox look alike. Well yeah,
- 22:26Speaker 1: it should be all okay. So I heard last week
- 22:30Speaker 1: on your chat like it had a little bit of
- 22:31Speaker 1: a chat about Kat mentioned that some people had spoken
- 22:34Speaker 1: about similarities. I went to Catherine Cox over a year
- 22:38Speaker 1: and a half ago, if not longer, and I said
- 22:40Speaker 1: to Coxy. We've got a kid at the club, and
- 22:43Speaker 1: I swear to God, I'm looking at you every training session.
- 22:46Speaker 3: It's driving me batty, like batty, all right.
- 22:49Speaker 1: Like her movement, the way she catches the ball, the
- 22:52Speaker 1: way she throws the ball. You know how Coxy used
- 22:54Speaker 1: to have that beautiful throw that swings across the circle
- 22:57Speaker 1: from left to right, and then she takes this beautiful
- 23:00Speaker 1: front cut.
- 23:01Speaker 3: It's like Live Wilkinson, the way she cocks.
- 23:04Speaker 1: Her head, the occasional long shot that she misses.
- 23:09Speaker 2: Is there an alispand no, there's not an Alie band
- 23:12Speaker 2: on Live?
- 23:12Speaker 3: I have actually spoken.
- 23:13Speaker 1: I'm not going to have another chat to Live today
- 23:15Speaker 1: about the alispan that'd be burned. There are a number
- 23:18Speaker 1: of things actually, because you know, I've heard this comparison
- 23:22Speaker 1: being made between Live and Coxy before, and I do
- 23:24Speaker 1: have some questions. Right, So, is could Live be mistaken
- 23:28Speaker 1: for being half asleep sometimes when she's on the court
- 23:30Speaker 1: because she's so casual?
- 23:31Speaker 3: Is that what you're sort of getting at?
- 23:33Speaker 1: Okay, even though Live does listen to this podcast, I'll
- 23:36Speaker 1: speak with honesty.
- 23:37Speaker 3: Yes, Okay, let's dick a little deeper.
- 23:42Speaker 1: Susan, does Live have an irrational fear of dirt, dust, spiders,
- 23:47Speaker 1: specs of dust, snakes, lizards, anything that's alive and anything
- 23:53Speaker 1: any meat that doesn't come cryovaced or wrapped in plastic.
- 23:55Speaker 3: Does Live have those neurosis as well?
- 23:57Speaker 1: That's a great question, Elizabeth, and one that I'd like
- 24:00Speaker 1: to answer in the following way. I actually haven't invested
- 24:02Speaker 1: that much time with Live to understand that just yes,
- 24:05Speaker 1: it's not sort of something that I mean, that's information
- 24:09Speaker 1: that you and Catherine have built over a very long
- 24:10Speaker 1: period of time. However, I think there is potential for
- 24:14Speaker 1: Live to have some fears in those categories.
- 24:17Speaker 2: Perhaps as an investment in her future and the future
- 24:21Speaker 2: of Australian netbor, we could start to mess with her
- 24:23Speaker 2: mind a little bit. If she doesn't already have those fears,
- 24:26Speaker 2: we could start to develop some neurosis. Because clearly it's
- 24:29Speaker 2: for the good of the country.
- 24:30Speaker 3: Lives, Yes, it works.
- 24:31Speaker 1: And also, I mean potentially Live could just come and
- 24:33Speaker 1: spend a week at the farm and I could really
- 24:35Speaker 1: get to know her. So you know, if she walks
- 24:37Speaker 1: into the guest room and walks out and says, do
- 24:40Speaker 1: you have any insect spray?
- 24:42Speaker 3: And I say why?
- 24:43Speaker 1: And if Live says, because there's two spiders and turned
- 24:46Speaker 1: out to be Daddy long legs.
- 24:47Speaker 3: If Liz goes in.
- 24:48Speaker 1: And is a whole can of morteine in the guest
- 24:52Speaker 1: room to kill said spiders, and I look at my
- 24:54Speaker 1: husband and say, well, the spiders were never going to
- 24:57Speaker 1: kill her, but the insect aside might will be on
- 25:01Speaker 1: a winner.
- 25:01Speaker 3: Yeah, I think you're on a winner.
- 25:03Speaker 1: I think the thing is if I thought you were
- 25:05Speaker 1: going to ask us live enjoy a balanced glass of wine.
- 25:10Speaker 3: Which wouldn't want? Which? Next question?
- 25:12Speaker 1: Could Live could live drink a balance glass of wine
- 25:15Speaker 1: and then run a kilometer to catch a.
- 25:16Speaker 3: Taxi while wearing heels? Yes she could. I actually going
- 25:19Speaker 3: to back Live in on that one.
- 25:21Speaker 2: And then and then follow it up with a chaser
- 25:23Speaker 2: of condensed milk.
- 25:24Speaker 3: Oh, I don't know. I think she'd be more likely
- 25:29Speaker 3: the red bull and the whipped cream to be honest.
- 25:30Speaker 3: But anyway, A kick a fast, Yes, that's all right.
- 25:34Speaker 1: That's all part of pre season training over here for
- 25:37Speaker 1: a diverse and our clubs run a little differently here
- 25:40Speaker 1: in the West.
- 25:41Speaker 3: I like it.
- 25:42Speaker 1: Yeah, she's an absolute ripper Girls Live Wilkinson. She's very
- 25:46Speaker 1: exciting and like a big, big weight to put on
- 25:48Speaker 1: her shoulders. There will be a lot of talk about
- 25:50Speaker 1: her this season, and she's still young, so you'll see
- 25:52Speaker 1: the highs and lows as you would have any twenty
- 25:54Speaker 1: one year old.
- 25:54Speaker 3: There's a lot of exciting talent through the through the SSN.
- 25:57Speaker 1: And there will be moments where everyone hits the head
- 26:00Speaker 1: and goes, oh, what's she doing? But then there'll be
- 26:02Speaker 1: moments where they're like, oh, my god, I can see
- 26:03Speaker 1: her in the green gold.
- 26:05Speaker 3: How old does she just turned twenty one? Twenty one? Yeah,
- 26:08Speaker 3: that's part of the excitement of young talent, isn't it.
- 26:09Speaker 1: Like you don't turn up to the games to watch
- 26:12Speaker 1: metronomes and watch people just doing the same thing over
- 26:14Speaker 1: and over again, which is you know, by the time
- 26:16Speaker 1: you hit your thirties, that's what you can do. But
- 26:18Speaker 1: to see young play develop and to sort of ride
- 26:20Speaker 1: those highs and layers with them, that's part of the
- 26:23Speaker 1: great journey of fandom and to feel like you're really
- 26:26Speaker 1: invested in their careers.
- 26:27Speaker 3: So yeah, yeah, she'd be great to watch for Fever.
- 26:29Speaker 1: As you would know Liz, over an extended period of
- 26:32Speaker 1: time in your career, you build a terrific dossia on
- 26:36Speaker 1: everyone that you play against. And so that's why we
- 26:40Speaker 1: always say second year blues in the game. First year
- 26:42Speaker 1: kid comes out of nowhere, no one's really got enough
- 26:45Speaker 1: information on them. They have these ripper games, and then
- 26:48Speaker 1: all of a sudden they get to the second year
- 26:50Speaker 1: and everyone's got data and footage and insight, and then
- 26:52Speaker 1: they've got to figure their way through the mess. And
- 26:54Speaker 1: so I feel like, you know that that's going to
- 26:57Speaker 1: be the youngsters that we see in the league this year,
- 26:59Speaker 1: Live Wilkinson being one of them, that they will.
- 27:01Speaker 3: Be exciting, but they've got work to do.
- 27:03Speaker 1: You know, they've got to build their information database around
- 27:06Speaker 1: how to beat you know, Sarah Cloud for the third
- 27:09Speaker 1: time in one season. And you know Sarah Cloud doesn't
- 27:12Speaker 1: get beaten twice in a row. So how do they
- 27:15Speaker 1: how does that battle unfold?
- 27:16Speaker 2: And how do I read that as a coach? How
- 27:18Speaker 2: do you take these young these younger players and teach
- 27:21Speaker 2: them how to learn? I guess because it's a whole
- 27:24Speaker 2: new ballgame for them, isn't It's like they've been they've
- 27:26Speaker 2: been awesome, and they've been the best on court, and
- 27:29Speaker 2: now it's you're going to be the worst on court.
- 27:31Speaker 2: And that's okay, that's part of your your learning, you know,
- 27:34Speaker 2: in order to be the best on court, again, you've
- 27:36Speaker 2: got to be this.
- 27:36Speaker 3: So what do you yeah for me? It's all in
- 27:38Speaker 3: your skills tool kit.
- 27:40Speaker 1: And so I think as a player, over time that
- 27:42Speaker 1: toolkit builds. I remember a great conversation once where normal
- 27:46Speaker 1: Plumber I think it was to Catherine Cox. I think
- 27:48Speaker 1: it was Coxy and I having this conversation where Plumster
- 27:51Speaker 1: said to Kathy, You've got a great A game, cat,
- 27:53Speaker 1: but you've got no B game, right, So, and it's
- 27:56Speaker 1: it's absolutely true, like.
- 27:58Speaker 3: When you're a game, what is that feeling? It?
- 28:00Speaker 1: Well, when you know when you do what you do
- 28:02Speaker 1: and you do it well, you're having a rip a game.
- 28:05Speaker 3: That's your a.
- 28:06Speaker 1: Game, right, like you know, you know the moves, it
- 28:08Speaker 1: all feels really perposal. And then all of a sudden
- 28:10Speaker 1: your opposition figures you out and then you're like, right,
- 28:13Speaker 1: well I need to adjust what I'm doing.
- 28:15Speaker 3: What the hell am I going to do? And that's
- 28:18Speaker 3: what's your plan? B? Like, how do you you know?
- 28:21Speaker 1: Like and a simplistic example, and again I think this
- 28:24Speaker 1: was Catherine, I think plumb said to her you're grade
- 28:26Speaker 1: out the left hand side, but god forbid the right.
- 28:30Speaker 1: So something something along those lines, right. So it's just like,
- 28:34Speaker 1: you know, you get into some you get into some
- 28:37Speaker 1: really friendly and common patterns as a player because they
- 28:39Speaker 1: make you feel good. But you've also got to understand
- 28:42Speaker 1: what else you can do and be creative and battle
- 28:46Speaker 1: against an opposition when they figure out your game plan.
- 28:48Speaker 1: And that's the job every week, you know, and that's
- 28:50Speaker 1: what we do here at the club and every other
- 28:52Speaker 1: club does you sit and study opposition and what they
- 28:55Speaker 1: do and how you're going to counterap that, and you know, yeah,
- 28:58Speaker 1: and they you've got the software to do it right,
- 29:00Speaker 1: so you don't even have to sit and rewind and
- 29:02Speaker 1: go through things. There's software that you go show me
- 29:05Speaker 1: every time Sue Gordion runs to the left hand side
- 29:07Speaker 1: of the court and you press the button and in
- 29:09Speaker 1: seconds you've got a whole clip of where your start
- 29:12Speaker 1: point is, where your endpoint is, at what point do
- 29:14Speaker 1: you get the ball? Like all of that data is
- 29:16Speaker 1: right there, there's just nowhere to hide.
- 29:18Speaker 2: It sounds like an unnatural advantage in a tipping comp
- 29:21Speaker 2: to me, now.
- 29:23Speaker 1: Do you know what as we say that, oh, I'm
- 29:25Speaker 1: not going to even say I could use my own
- 29:27Speaker 1: performance analysts to assist with my data tipping to ensure
- 29:30Speaker 1: that I win this bloody.
- 29:32Speaker 2: Please do That'd be so great?
- 29:34Speaker 3: You know we should do. Why don't we have a control? Right?
- 29:37Speaker 1: So I've been thinking about this because I'm the chair
- 29:39Speaker 1: of Netball Australia.
- 29:40Speaker 3: I shouldn't really be tipping.
- 29:42Speaker 2: Sorry is this podcast chat? Or are we off my candy?
- 29:45Speaker 3: This could be podcast chat?
- 29:46Speaker 1: Right, So, as the chair of netballastrat, I don't think
- 29:49Speaker 1: I should be tipping, right, And I've been thinking about this,
- 29:51Speaker 1: but I think I'm either going to go each week.
- 29:53Speaker 1: I'll either go the home team or the away team,
- 29:56Speaker 1: and I haven't decided which one. And maybe I'm the
- 29:58Speaker 1: control and Catherine and Carolyn are just well, Carolyn's a chump.
- 30:04Speaker 3: Catherine will use her Catherine will use her color.
- 30:08Speaker 2: I think it's pronounced champ.
- 30:10Speaker 1: No, because Catherine will use her well, maybe Catherine will
- 30:12Speaker 1: use her commentator notes. I think we all need a
- 30:15Speaker 1: point of difference, right, GORDI will be really data driven.
- 30:18Speaker 3: Yeah, it will be just one or the other. I
- 30:21Speaker 3: don't know. She will be like commentators. No, she'll choose colors.
- 30:24Speaker 1: Okay, I was gonna say someone needs to either choose
- 30:26Speaker 1: colors or like who would win in a fight with
- 30:28Speaker 1: the mascots.
- 30:29Speaker 2: Well, she's already told me that she's not doing her
- 30:31Speaker 2: tips until the week out, whereas I've already tipped the
- 30:34Speaker 2: first round, but she's waiting to see who's on court
- 30:36Speaker 2: and whatever. So that sounds very smart, but it sounds
- 30:38Speaker 2: to me like more than just picking the jockey bind
- 30:41Speaker 2: of color.
- 30:41Speaker 3: I think Kat is taking this way too bloody.
- 30:43Speaker 2: Seriously, Liz, I like this. I think from an integrity perspective,
- 30:50Speaker 2: it's probably good for you to declare a system now
- 30:53Speaker 2: and just roll with that. Because you're Switzerland. You don't
- 30:57Speaker 2: support Swiftzerland. I don't support any particular team. But yeah, okay,
- 31:03Speaker 2: I think that's good. Maybe you can tell us next
- 31:05Speaker 2: week how you are going to tip for the seasons.
- 31:08Speaker 1: Yes, okay, I'll have a think home are Away homer Away.
- 31:11Speaker 1: It might be a good name for a TV show.
- 31:12Speaker 1: I don't know, but you know, you know what's going
- 31:15Speaker 1: to happen here as the season goes on, and I'm
- 31:19Speaker 1: at the front of this tipping competition and I'm in
- 31:23Speaker 1: a commentary game. You do realize it's going to influence
- 31:25Speaker 1: my commentary. I've just spoken to you about how I
- 31:27Speaker 1: don't let.
- 31:28Speaker 3: Anything influence my commentary.
- 31:31Speaker 1: But given that I am so useless at this stuff,
- 31:33Speaker 1: when I'm at the front of the table, watch out,
- 31:36Speaker 1: I apologize in advance. I'm putting this disclaimery, and I
- 31:39Speaker 1: apologize in advance if my commentary starts to sway towards the.
- 31:43Speaker 3: Team that I have.
- 31:45Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm happy with that, Gordy, Okay, And sometimes that
- 31:49Speaker 1: happens when I can say this next, I don't commentate anymore,
- 31:52Speaker 1: but you know, like I don't know how the player
- 31:54Speaker 1: of the match is picked now, But there was a
- 31:56Speaker 1: time when the commentators used to write on it, and
- 31:58Speaker 1: I hated it because you're so wrapped up in calling
- 32:00Speaker 1: the game and the stats. To pull yourself back and
- 32:03Speaker 1: think who's been the best player is actually sometimes really difficult,
- 32:06Speaker 1: and so sometimes, like if it was my turn, I'd
- 32:10Speaker 1: quickly look at some stats, and eventually I worked a
- 32:12Speaker 1: system where I gave a three two one at the
- 32:14Speaker 1: end of each quarter so I wouldn't be swayed by
- 32:17Speaker 1: someone getting four great intercepts in arriving and giving it
- 32:20Speaker 1: to them. But sometimes you name your player of the
- 32:23Speaker 1: match with sort of five minutes ago, and then in
- 32:24Speaker 1: commentry you would absolutely talk them up. So everyone, that
- 32:29Speaker 1: is so true.
- 32:33Speaker 3: Oh my god, I'm just named kath Cox's playing of
- 32:35Speaker 3: the match. Yeah, ah, Coxy, she's had a great game.
- 32:38Speaker 1: But Liz even now, like that's you know, we get
- 32:41Speaker 1: in our ear that you know this player may be
- 32:43Speaker 1: or this not now but used to be this players
- 32:45Speaker 1: being named as the player of the match.
- 32:46Speaker 3: This is when it was taken out of our hands.
- 32:49Speaker 1: And then I'd be sitting there going, oh my god,
- 32:51Speaker 1: I haven't mentioned her. So all of a sudden you
- 32:56Speaker 1: start rolling in and it's like, oh, Maddie hat when
- 32:59Speaker 1: you how impressive.
- 33:01Speaker 3: Has she been in the last forty minutes? And I
- 33:04Speaker 3: haven't mentioned her name?
- 33:06Speaker 2: So I think the whole system should be replaced by
- 33:10Speaker 2: someone a keen netball fan, not naming names, but I'd
- 33:14Speaker 2: be happy to volunteer sitting on the sideline in one
- 33:16Speaker 2: of those nice armchairs with a cannagin just saying what
- 33:21Speaker 2: I reckon, what I.
- 33:23Speaker 3: Reckon, potentially flying around the country to all games. That
- 33:26Speaker 3: was nice. That's got integrity written all over it, or
- 33:30Speaker 3: doesn't it? Though?
- 33:31Speaker 2: Thank you? Speaking of which I did say last week.
- 33:34Speaker 2: You know, I was interested in what it's like for
- 33:36Speaker 2: Julie Sliger when her two daughters on court head to
- 33:40Speaker 2: head against one another. I got this message from Julie.
- 33:43Speaker 2: Of course, we were so so excited to see Natalie
- 33:45Speaker 2: and Amy Mark up against each other on Friday night.
- 33:47Speaker 2: We usually love our team Merch, but had to wear
- 33:49Speaker 2: white shirts to the game on Friday night so we
- 33:51Speaker 2: couldn't be accused of having any bias. We're so lucky
- 33:54Speaker 2: to have been able to see Nat Nami play together
- 33:56Speaker 2: and against it was, she wrote, Natalie, but you know
- 33:59Speaker 2: I've said, Nata, Namy, we're play together and against each other.
- 34:02Speaker 2: Over the years, lots of ferrying them around before they
- 34:04Speaker 2: could drive is paying off. We're the best weekend in Adelaide,
- 34:07Speaker 2: great fun and very proud of our hard working girls.
- 34:09Speaker 2: And she sent me through a photo of the first
- 34:11Speaker 2: time they took the girls to a pre season tournament
- 34:13Speaker 2: in twenty twelve in Melbourne, so I loved that. And
- 34:18Speaker 2: it's like, because we're talking about it, what do you
- 34:20Speaker 2: do as a parent when your girls are in different
- 34:22Speaker 2: teams and it's like and one's a wing attack and
- 34:24Speaker 2: one's a wing defense and they are up against each
- 34:26Speaker 2: other right now, I just close my eyes.
- 34:28Speaker 3: Well couldn't you.
- 34:29Speaker 1: Couldn't you buy like a two T shirts and sew
- 34:31Speaker 1: them together half and half. Surely we're going to see
- 34:33Speaker 1: that when the Giants play the Lightning. Actually, speaking of Sligers,
- 34:37Speaker 1: do yourself a favor, Dribblers. Go and have a look
- 34:39Speaker 1: on Giants social media this week and you'll see Amy Sliger,
- 34:43Speaker 1: who they played against the Polse last night, have a
- 34:46Speaker 1: slide on the court. It's actually a riper slide, stands
- 34:49Speaker 1: up and then falls Amy slide face, Amy slider.
- 34:52Speaker 3: Oh look at you guys. So she started deep and
- 34:57Speaker 3: falls flat on her face.
- 34:58Speaker 1: Yeah, straight up and falls flat on her face, and
- 35:02Speaker 1: everybody on the court just falls over laughing, right in
- 35:05Speaker 1: the middle of a game.
- 35:05Speaker 3: It's such good footage.
- 35:07Speaker 2: And she would have been leading that laughter, I imagine. Yeah,
- 35:10Speaker 2: she well and truly laughs at herself.
- 35:12Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, she's a rip up. So it's good. Good.
- 35:15Speaker 2: So I don't know where we've landed on you with
- 35:17Speaker 2: the tipping, Gordy, but it sounds to me like if
- 35:19Speaker 2: you don't win, really you want to hang ahead in shame.
- 35:22Speaker 1: Right, Yeah, well, I mean, I'm going into this expecting
- 35:25Speaker 1: not to win, because history tells me I'm useless. But
- 35:28Speaker 1: like I said, if I have a little side gig
- 35:30Speaker 1: as a performance analyst on board, I could be right
- 35:32Speaker 1: up there this year.
- 35:33Speaker 2: Love it. That's absolutely wonderful.
- 35:35Speaker 1: And the performance analyst's job is now hanging by a
- 35:38Speaker 1: tipping threat. Well yeah, and I can't wait for Dan
- 35:42Speaker 1: Ryan to say to him, I've got work for you
- 35:43Speaker 1: to do and he says, no, Actually, I'm working on someone.
- 35:47Speaker 2: We could invite Dan to participate in the tipp and
- 35:50Speaker 2: co it might be more legit.
- 35:53Speaker 3: This is true because then they were both for using
- 35:55Speaker 3: the same data. This is true.
- 35:57Speaker 2: That's a good point. But it's how you interpret the
- 35:59Speaker 2: data is not. Everyone's going to interpret the data in
- 36:01Speaker 2: the same way. So you know I would interpret it
- 36:05Speaker 2: incorrectly for.
- 36:05Speaker 3: Instance, as do we occasionally.
- 36:12Speaker 2: So two weeks to go, what's the next two weeks
- 36:15Speaker 2: look like? Is there such a thing as tapering at
- 36:17Speaker 2: this point in the in the preseason? What do you
- 36:20Speaker 2: know what's happening?
- 36:21Speaker 3: Like?
- 36:21Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean that's you know that sits with your
- 36:23Speaker 1: strength and conditioning person who kind of manages all the loads.
- 36:26Speaker 1: So it's not so much tapering, but I think the
- 36:28Speaker 1: biggest one is mental downloads, So just making sure that,
- 36:31Speaker 1: particularly as of next week, that the players are going
- 36:34Speaker 1: in and making sure that there's no additional load outside
- 36:37Speaker 1: of the standard that's going to build pressure, etc.
- 36:40Speaker 3: And at times that's actually the harder task to manage
- 36:43Speaker 3: because it's kind of not in our control.
- 36:45Speaker 1: So I think we certainly emphasize that as a club
- 36:47Speaker 1: for the players. But you know, by nature, everyone's so
- 36:50Speaker 1: excited to get Round one underway. It's like the next
- 36:53Speaker 1: week just flies.
- 36:55Speaker 3: It's like Grand Final week.
- 36:56Speaker 1: They're the two weeks it's the week going into Round
- 36:58Speaker 1: one and the week leading into Grand Final are just immense.
- 37:03Speaker 3: Exciting.
- 37:04Speaker 2: Well, it's a big week for me too as an
- 37:06Speaker 2: Apple coach the under twelve. So they've got their first
- 37:08Speaker 2: game this Saturday. We've had two training sessions and of
- 37:12Speaker 2: course last night in our first second training session, I
- 37:15Speaker 2: tried to teach them absolutely everything, which means I've taught
- 37:17Speaker 2: them nothing focus on for this week, which is fine
- 37:21Speaker 2: because I'm in Melbourne this weekend. I'm not even there
- 37:23Speaker 2: for their first game, and yes, so I don't know
- 37:26Speaker 2: do they even have a coach who knows, but.
- 37:29Speaker 3: Your pre seasons.
- 37:31Speaker 1: Yeah, your preseason sounds like the New Zealand League.
- 37:35Speaker 3: That is a sledge sledge I won't be doing.
- 37:42Speaker 2: You might have to explain it for me and those
- 37:45Speaker 2: at home.
- 37:46Speaker 3: Well, their preseason likes about four or five words.
- 37:49Speaker 2: Is it okay? They just so it's like, all right,
- 37:51Speaker 2: come on, put your shoes on, we're playing.
- 37:53Speaker 3: Yeah. From a players point of view, they'd probably love it.
- 37:56Speaker 3: Oh bloody love it.
- 37:57Speaker 1: And I would say adversely over here, our preseasons are
- 37:59Speaker 1: a ted too long, which is something we're all looking
- 38:01Speaker 1: at to address.
- 38:02Speaker 2: So when did your pre season start for the non Diamonds,
- 38:05Speaker 2: it started in about October.
- 38:07Speaker 3: October twenty twelve.
- 38:08Speaker 1: I was going to say nineteen six, nineteen six utero Yeah, yeah, no,
- 38:14Speaker 1: like so the contract year starts on the first of October,
- 38:18Speaker 1: and then there's sort of annual lead to manage, which
- 38:20Speaker 1: a lot of clubs we have to front end, and
- 38:23Speaker 1: then off the back of that you're usually sort of
- 38:26Speaker 1: hitting the court. Clubs sporadically hit the court with different
- 38:29Speaker 1: layers of athletes from the first of November onwards.
- 38:33Speaker 2: And what about the internationals, So when do they go
- 38:35Speaker 2: back to the UK or you know what's there, what's
- 38:37Speaker 2: the windows That.
- 38:38Speaker 1: All depends so but most of them lead pretty much
- 38:41Speaker 1: straight after the season finishes at the end of the
- 38:43Speaker 1: Grand Final and then depending on the athlete or so.
- 38:49Speaker 1: A lot of the internationals now like you used to
- 38:51Speaker 1: just lose them, but now they're kind of having to
- 38:52Speaker 1: manage their load at international level as well because the
- 38:56Speaker 1: international season is getting pretty hectic. So so yeah, we
- 38:59Speaker 1: you know, you spread see some like Hallan Howsey didn't
- 39:01Speaker 1: go back and play. Let's say fran Williams from Foevers
- 39:04Speaker 1: she went back to full time. Then if you look
- 39:06Speaker 1: at the Jamaicans, some played some internationals, some didn't.
- 39:09Speaker 3: So it's just a juggling act.
- 39:12Speaker 2: Well, the race is just it would be like got
- 39:14Speaker 2: of Heathrow turn around, come back and play in Australia
- 39:16Speaker 2: in New Zealand, really, wouldn't it.
- 39:18Speaker 3: It is full on it.
- 39:19Speaker 1: It's a big discussion point in the sport at the moment,
- 39:21Speaker 1: just about making sure where staying ahead of the game,
- 39:24Speaker 1: noting that you know, we turn the corner next year,
- 39:26Speaker 1: You've got Commonwealth Games a year after that, the World
- 39:29Speaker 1: Cup potentially extended seasons in length if we you know,
- 39:34Speaker 1: depending if the league grows, depending what that looks like.
- 39:37Speaker 3: So there's lots to consider around managing.
- 39:39Speaker 1: Particularly our top top elite echelon of players that's in
- 39:44Speaker 1: international systems.
- 39:46Speaker 2: Yeah, because the common game was full end of July,
- 39:49Speaker 2: isn't it that just like that's I'm sorry, that's very
- 39:51Speaker 2: inconvenient for Sun Cops, super NETBWL.
- 39:54Speaker 1: Yeah, so we'll definitely have a season that finishes early
- 39:56Speaker 1: next year.
- 39:56Speaker 3: That's not letting any cat out of the bag.
- 39:58Speaker 1: But yeah, there's other decisions to make, which I don't
- 40:01Speaker 1: think the sport's too far away from at the moment.
- 40:03Speaker 2: So so are we able to say whether that means
- 40:07Speaker 2: the season starts earlier, finishes earlier, or shorter season or
- 40:11Speaker 2: is that something that is still not being shared?
- 40:13Speaker 1: No, I have nothing's been shared, but I think it's
- 40:15Speaker 1: I mean, I'm not speaking out of turn.
- 40:16Speaker 3: I think it's Oh, so.
- 40:19Speaker 2: We is speaking at a turn and Netball Australia has
- 40:23Speaker 2: just cut off her connection.
- 40:24Speaker 3: No, I'm back.
- 40:25Speaker 1: No, I think it's fair to say that you know,
- 40:28Speaker 1: the season is likely going to have to start a
- 40:29Speaker 1: little bit earlier to fit everything in what that exactly
- 40:32Speaker 1: looks like, and the.
- 40:32Speaker 3: Dates is still to be determined, but I'm excited.
- 40:36Speaker 2: I'm happy for it to look if anyone's interested, I'm
- 40:38Speaker 2: happier if the season starts earlier. Great, Okay put me
- 40:42Speaker 2: down three years, yes, fantastic. So the reason we just
- 40:45Speaker 2: lost Scordy briefly then is because we've got a link
- 40:48Speaker 2: and we've run over time. Because this has just been
- 40:50Speaker 2: such an awesome chat. So I am going to say
- 40:53Speaker 2: that we do not once again we are lacking in
- 40:56Speaker 2: a win beneath our wings nomination, Ladies and gentlemen of Australia.
- 41:00Speaker 2: What is going on? You know that these people working
- 41:03Speaker 2: very hard, let us know who they are a little
- 41:05Speaker 2: one up in our sleeve that we are working on
- 41:07Speaker 2: something special for because it's a group nomination, which has
- 41:11Speaker 2: happened before. But yeah, but it's not a you know,
- 41:15Speaker 2: it's not a standard nomination, so we obviously have to
- 41:17Speaker 2: go through a very lengthy consultation process between the three
- 41:20Speaker 2: of us to work out what's all we're gonna do
- 41:22Speaker 2: with it. But anyway, Gordi, thanks for joining us.
- 41:25Speaker 3: Pleasure, thanks for having me once again. Fun.
- 41:28Speaker 2: Yeah, especially in this such busy time, we really appreciate it.
- 41:32Speaker 2: And yeah, good all the best look after yourself. Remember
- 41:35Speaker 2: can of Red Bull and a can of whiped cream
- 41:37Speaker 2: is all you need for a daily nutrition.
- 41:39Speaker 3: Just it's going to go and put my fever top
- 41:41Speaker 3: on there so I can go to training.
- 41:43Speaker 2: Very nice. Well thanks, and I'm going to say Cyana. Now,
- 41:48Speaker 2: this is Carolyn Swindell, all right, and no one has
- 41:53Speaker 2: anything to respond to ordinarily, what oppens is someone else
- 41:57Speaker 2: says their name then, so let's try that again. I
- 42:00Speaker 2: gonna sign off. Now, I'm gonna say sign up again.
- 42:02Speaker 1: This is Carolyn's Wignell, and that's Elizabeth Dallas and that's Susan.
- 42:06Speaker 3: Got you.
- 42:07Speaker 2: This has been no dribble. Have a great week, guys.
- 42:10Speaker 3: Bye bye. Oh that was fun. Thanks guys. H
