- 1:05Speaker 3: spanned sixteen plus seasons. Jordan also talks to me about
- 1:09Speaker 3: how she approaches each and every new challenge with a
- 1:12Speaker 3: beginner's mindset and opens up about the immense internal work
- 1:16Speaker 3: required to evolve from being a leader by action to
- 1:19Speaker 3: a vocal, empathetic captain, plus how she learned to separate
- 1:23Speaker 3: her self worth from her on court performance, especially through
- 1:27Speaker 3: a period of personal struggle. We also talk all things
- 1:30Speaker 3: League on Volleyball, and love Nebraska and what it truly
- 1:33Speaker 3: means to be a powerful woman in sports today. Jordan's
- 1:37Speaker 3: willingness to be open and honest about the emotional journey
- 1:40Speaker 3: of an athlete is truly what makes this conversation so compelling.
- 1:44Speaker 3: Her mindset true reblows my mind. You can tell she's
- 1:49Speaker 3: been in this for a long time and she knows
- 1:51Speaker 3: a thing or two about how to conquer hurdles, both.

- 2:24Speaker 3: She's a pro volleyball player, a founding athlete for League

- 2:32Speaker 3: Welcome to Hurdle. How we doing good?
- 2:34Speaker 4: How are you doing? Excited to be back. It's so
- 2:36Speaker 4: good to see you.
- 2:37Speaker 2: I'm so excited to be back.
- 2:39Speaker 3: I you're like one of my favorite people to keep
- 2:41Speaker 3: up with from like the hurdle sphere over the last
- 2:44Speaker 3: few years, and I've loved everything that's happened since we
- 2:47Speaker 3: first connected. So it's so special to have you back
- 2:50Speaker 3: on the show because so much has happened.
- 2:51Speaker 1: So much has happened. I was like trying to think
- 2:53Speaker 1: back on the drive in this morning, I was like,
- 2:55Speaker 1: when was the last time we spoke? That was before?
- 2:59Speaker 1: I don't even remember if.
- 3:00Speaker 3: Four Larsen Hurdle Podcast Google once you were episode one
- 3:06Speaker 3: seventy nine for Contact Jordan, we're currently almost eight hundred
- 3:10Speaker 3: episodes in and that was November. Oh my god, it's
- 3:14Speaker 3: like our anniversary kind of the episode went live on
- 3:17Speaker 3: November tenth, twenty twenty one.
- 3:19Speaker 4: Stop it. Oh my gosh.
- 3:21Speaker 1: That's great. Well, congratu first of all, eight hundred, that's amazing.
- 3:26Speaker 2: It's a wild time for hurdle. I know that you
- 3:28Speaker 2: saw that.
- 3:29Speaker 3: Now we're part of the Iheartwoman's Sports podcast network, So
- 3:32Speaker 3: so excited to usher in this chapter and have you
- 3:35Speaker 3: be a part of this exciting time. Exciting time for
- 3:39Speaker 3: you as well. I always like to level set when
- 3:41Speaker 3: we start on the show. Here, give me the lowdown.
- 3:44Speaker 3: How are you doing?
- 3:45Speaker 2: Really?
- 3:47Speaker 4: That's a great that's a great question.
- 3:49Speaker 1: You know, a lot of balls rolling, which is always
- 3:51Speaker 1: a great thing, which sometimes can be overwhelming at times,
- 3:54Speaker 1: but yeah, doing quite well. I think that kind of
- 3:57Speaker 1: saying goodbye to the national team and you know that
- 4:01Speaker 1: chapter and it was great, but also feeling like I'm
- 4:04Speaker 1: kind of creating roots and roots in a way that
- 4:06Speaker 1: I've never really had for many years. So it's different
- 4:10Speaker 1: and new and also uncomfortable because I'm used to being
- 4:12Speaker 1: on the go so much. So lot's going on, but
- 4:15Speaker 1: all good things.
- 4:16Speaker 3: So how does creating these new roots? Obviously you're in Nebraska,
- 4:21Speaker 3: girly through and through. There's a reason why you have
- 4:23Speaker 3: this nickname, the Governor. But how does staying in one
- 4:26Speaker 3: place make you feel.
- 4:28Speaker 1: It's a little weird, which people are like, how does
- 4:30Speaker 1: that make it weird?
- 4:31Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 4:32Speaker 1: It's just when you're used to uprooting your life every
- 4:34Speaker 1: six months, you're you know, your attachment to things. And
- 4:38Speaker 1: now I'm you know, really building a community again, and really,
- 4:41Speaker 1: I don't know, being around my family again. It's like
- 4:43Speaker 1: my family is usually coming to me, so now being
- 4:45Speaker 1: there and here in present and I get a host events,
- 4:49Speaker 1: you know, I can host Thanksgiving and Christmas and and
- 4:52Speaker 1: kind of creating new traditions because I think, you know,
- 4:55Speaker 1: so much time has passed that those things haven't happened
- 4:57Speaker 1: for me. So again it's like a weird, uncomfortable thing
- 5:01Speaker 1: but also exciting and new because I haven't had it
- 5:04Speaker 1: in a while.
- 5:05Speaker 2: So yeah, yeah, I hear that.
- 5:07Speaker 3: And it's really just facing maybe the things that you
- 5:10Speaker 3: kind of put on the back burner for a while totally.
- 5:13Speaker 1: Which again it's like I try to be as present
- 5:16Speaker 1: as I could while traveling, but it's so hard. It's
- 5:18Speaker 1: so hard to stay connected and life happens for other people.
- 5:21Speaker 1: You know. My friends are like three kids in and
- 5:24Speaker 1: their kids are already in high school, and I'm like,
- 5:25Speaker 1: wait a minute, I just left, Like how are they
- 5:27Speaker 1: so you know big now, But it's been so fun
- 5:30Speaker 1: to reconnect and just kind of join them where they're at.
- 5:32Speaker 1: And yeah, it's I feel like I've just left college.
- 5:36Speaker 1: Which is I know that's not the case. I don't
- 5:38Speaker 1: look like I just left college, but it feels like that.
- 5:41Speaker 1: It's like a weird I don't know, it's like my
- 5:43Speaker 1: life pause and everybody's kept going, but mine also did.
- 5:47Speaker 1: It's a weird space but also fun.
- 5:49Speaker 3: Can I tell you that I had a moment during
- 5:51Speaker 3: the pandemic where I realized that I had been on
- 5:55Speaker 3: go go go in a very different way than you have.
- 5:58Speaker 3: And I sat down one day and did an inventory
- 6:01Speaker 3: of the people that mattered to me in my life,
- 6:03Speaker 3: and like if someone had had a baby and I
- 6:05Speaker 3: didn't feel like I did enough when that happened, I
- 6:07Speaker 3: like sent them a note. I was like, Okay, I
- 6:09Speaker 3: want to like really try to reclaim some of these
- 6:12Speaker 3: relationships so I can hear what you're saying totally.
- 6:15Speaker 1: And yeah, it's it's weird when you finally kind of pause.
- 6:19Speaker 1: It's hard to also sit in the pause right when
- 6:21Speaker 1: you've been so used to, like I don't know, filling
- 6:23Speaker 1: your mind with other things that learning how to like
- 6:26Speaker 1: quiet your mind, and the quiet mind is like it's
- 6:28Speaker 1: okay and that nothing is wrong and so and I
- 6:32Speaker 1: think also too, As you know, retirement comes closer to me,
- 6:35Speaker 1: you know, without volleyball having that as an outlet, Like,
- 6:38Speaker 1: what does that relationship look like for me too? And
- 6:40Speaker 1: how do I create habits that are healthy now as
- 6:42Speaker 1: an outlet that kind of keep me kind of at bay?
- 6:46Speaker 1: So because everybody's like, oh, that transition is so hard,
- 6:48Speaker 1: and I'm like, oh man, I'm like bracing for you
- 6:51Speaker 1: know something, but just I don't know, feeling like in
- 6:53Speaker 1: a really good place just internally, which I'm forever grateful for.
- 6:57Speaker 2: I love that.
- 6:58Speaker 3: And you know, you just posted the other day season sixteen.
- 7:01Speaker 3: I forget what the hashtag was. It was something about yes,
- 7:04Speaker 3: I'm still doing this and yes I am old. Yes
- 7:07Speaker 3: sixteen seasons in that is impressive and also such a
- 7:13Speaker 3: testament to how much of a stellar athlete you are.
- 7:18Speaker 3: How does it feel now at the beginning of a
- 7:20Speaker 3: season versus maybe how it felt when we were closer
- 7:23Speaker 3: to seasons one and two.
- 7:25Speaker 1: Yeah, there's oddly still this newness and excitement. I feel
- 7:29Speaker 1: like I'm still learning, which is crazy.
- 7:32Speaker 4: And I think.
- 7:33Speaker 1: There have been moments of time in my career that
- 7:36Speaker 1: I burnout was real and I was like, maybe this
- 7:38Speaker 1: is time to step away. But I feel just immense
- 7:42Speaker 1: gratitude that I get it still, you know, lace them
- 7:45Speaker 1: up and I get a problem solve every day with
- 7:48Speaker 1: some of the best, you know, athletes in the world,
- 7:50Speaker 1: and I don't know, I just sit in a ton
- 7:52Speaker 1: of gratitude, which I don't know. Again, you would think
- 7:55Speaker 1: being in the sport for so long at some point
- 7:57Speaker 1: like the newness rubs off. But I love every minute
- 8:00Speaker 1: so and I think, actually, I was doing the math today,
- 8:02Speaker 1: I think it's like season nineteen technically, I'm like, how
- 8:04Speaker 1: do you count it? Do you count years in the
- 8:06Speaker 1: sport or seasons? Because I did half season, So I.
- 8:09Speaker 2: Think it's ever it is that you want exactly, So.
- 8:11Speaker 4: I'm like, well, what do we count here? You know? So,
- 8:14Speaker 4: but yeah, it's been fun.
- 8:15Speaker 2: I love what you say about problem solving.
- 8:18Speaker 3: Talk to me about what problem solving looks like for
- 8:20Speaker 3: you on the regular with play, whether it be in
- 8:22Speaker 3: practice or in game.
- 8:24Speaker 1: Yeah, I think volleyball is a game of decisions, you know,
- 8:27Speaker 1: and you have a certain amount of time to make
- 8:29Speaker 1: the appropriate decision. And so obviously also you're dealing with
- 8:33Speaker 1: people in humans, and everybody has a different emotional capacity
- 8:37Speaker 1: of how they get to the same solution. And so
- 8:40Speaker 1: how do you manage people's emotions and then also how
- 8:45Speaker 1: do you execute the skill? And I mean volleyball is
- 8:47Speaker 1: pretty beautiful when it all comes together, and so how
- 8:50Speaker 1: can you make it not feel as chunky? And so
- 8:53Speaker 1: kind of setting a temperature of the room and understanding
- 8:58Speaker 1: like how do I have a conversation or I need
- 9:01Speaker 1: to take over for this situation or I need to
- 9:03Speaker 1: sit back in this situation. So it's really just constantly evaluating,
- 9:07Speaker 1: and then it's also evaluating internally of like what do
- 9:09Speaker 1: I need to give today, what skill is needed most
- 9:11Speaker 1: for me? And then kind of I don't know, I
- 9:14Speaker 1: just love like finding that decision every day, and then
- 9:17Speaker 1: there's just micro decisions over time. And I think with
- 9:20Speaker 1: leadership too, it's like how do I show up and
- 9:22Speaker 1: be the best I can and kind of set a
- 9:24Speaker 1: foundation for those If I can be as consistent as possible,
- 9:27Speaker 1: that's where I want to aim at.
- 9:28Speaker 3: Yeah, for sure, And being a leader is something that you,
- 9:32Speaker 3: I would argue, naturally stepped into as your tenure within
- 9:35Speaker 3: this sport continued. Do you feel like from a young
- 9:39Speaker 3: age you were someone that was up to stepping into
- 9:42Speaker 3: this type of role or is this a skill that
- 9:44Speaker 3: you as we're talking about learning and growing and problem solving,
- 9:47Speaker 3: really homed in on over time.
- 9:50Speaker 1: Yeah, it's definitely evolved over time.
- 9:51Speaker 4: For sure.
- 9:52Speaker 1: I feel like I was always I always felt a
- 9:54Speaker 1: little different, you know, my mind was a little different.
- 9:56Speaker 1: How I approach the game was a little different. But
- 9:58Speaker 1: I think I went for more of a leadership by action,
- 10:02Speaker 1: you know, my work ethic, how I you know, pursued
- 10:05Speaker 1: and practice, you know, those kind of things I think
- 10:08Speaker 1: really were the foundational piece for me. And I think
- 10:10Speaker 1: where I've had to evolve is like, it's not just
- 10:14Speaker 1: about what's happening between the white lines. It's about how
- 10:16Speaker 1: I get to know my teammates, how I'm showing up
- 10:18Speaker 1: for them. They are human beings, you know, they aren't machines.
- 10:22Speaker 1: And I think sometimes I equate myself as a machine.
- 10:24Speaker 1: I'm like, you just do this and you execute. But
- 10:27Speaker 1: there's just so much more to the game. And I
- 10:29Speaker 1: think my ability to read the room has gone up immensely,
- 10:33Speaker 1: and then that way it allows people to feel seen
- 10:36Speaker 1: and heard, and then they can be their best selves
- 10:37Speaker 1: around me as well, because unfortunately I have this layer
- 10:41Speaker 1: of intimidation. You know, I blame it on my dad
- 10:44Speaker 1: a little bit. You know, I kind of have the
- 10:46Speaker 1: Larsen you know, grin or seriousness, which can be perceived
- 10:51Speaker 1: just externally different. So I've had to really work hard
- 10:54Speaker 1: to kind of break that down. And then also what
- 10:56Speaker 1: I've done within the sport too. You know, I think
- 10:58Speaker 1: it can be intimidating to, you know, to be around,
- 11:01Speaker 1: but I think, at the end of the day, like,
- 11:02Speaker 1: I'm human too, and I just want to be great.
- 11:04Speaker 1: So how do you find that balance?
- 11:06Speaker 2: So I appreciate your resting bitch face. Jordan, thank you,
- 11:09Speaker 2: thank you.
- 11:09Speaker 1: No, No, it's so true. It's so I had to say, yeah,
- 11:13Speaker 1: it's so true. I'm like, half the time, it's really
- 11:15Speaker 1: not what's happening inside. I wish you could feel, but
- 11:17Speaker 1: it's It's really been something I've had to work on.
- 11:20Speaker 1: And but yeah, what.
- 11:23Speaker 2: An interesting thing to come to terms with and recognize.
- 11:25Speaker 3: And also I really appreciate you saying that it's bigger
- 11:28Speaker 3: than what just happens within the white lines. When you
- 11:31Speaker 3: talk about going beyond those white lines and we think
- 11:34Speaker 3: about the work that needs to happen off the court,
- 11:36Speaker 3: what comes to mind for you?
- 11:37Speaker 2: What kind of work does that entail?
- 11:41Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 11:41Speaker 1: I mean I think like understanding where people are coming from,
- 11:44Speaker 1: you know. I think every day, you know, someone may
- 11:47Speaker 1: have something happening in their life and they're showing up
- 11:49Speaker 1: with the heaviness in their heart and they're like, dude,
- 11:51Speaker 1: I cannot execute today and like I need help. I
- 11:54Speaker 1: think if you get to know them in a setting
- 11:56Speaker 1: that's a little bit not as harsh, then they can
- 11:59Speaker 1: ask for help sooner. And then also they can also
- 12:02Speaker 1: understanding where you're coming from. So maybe that's a coffee date,
- 12:05Speaker 1: maybe that's we're going to dinner. Maybe it's just in
- 12:08Speaker 1: a group setting outside the gym, you know, of just
- 12:11Speaker 1: small conversations here and there. I think add a layer
- 12:14Speaker 1: of depth to humanity that allows people to say, like,
- 12:17Speaker 1: all right, we are playing a sport and it matters
- 12:20Speaker 1: winning and losing matters unfortunately, but at the end of
- 12:23Speaker 1: the day, it's like we're here just to do what
- 12:25Speaker 1: we love and we love doing it with the people
- 12:27Speaker 1: that we love. So I think remembering that and staying rooted,
- 12:31Speaker 1: and that was never always me, you know, I was like, dude,
- 12:34Speaker 1: if we don't win this game, like my life will end,
- 12:36Speaker 1: you know, Like you know, I'd very was just like
- 12:39Speaker 1: live and breathe it and everything matters, and it does,
- 12:42Speaker 1: you know, And I think it's how can you find
- 12:44Speaker 1: the balance in that? And is their balance?
- 12:46Speaker 2: When did that change?
- 12:48Speaker 1: I think prior to the twenty twenty I never know
- 12:52Speaker 1: why I said twenty twenty Olympic Games technically twenty twenty one.
- 12:55Speaker 1: I think that whole quad I learned that, like if
- 12:58Speaker 1: this is my last go like how do I wanted
- 13:00Speaker 1: to look and feel at the end, regardless of outcome?
- 13:03Speaker 1: And how can I separate myself from this athlete of
- 13:07Speaker 1: like it all matters, and it does because you need
- 13:09Speaker 1: to be great with all the things, but also this
- 13:12Speaker 1: human element of like you know, when you get the
- 13:17Speaker 1: metal on your neck, it's like a snapshot in time.
- 13:19Speaker 1: It's not you know, it's a thing that happens, but
- 13:23Speaker 1: it's because of the journey. And I think there's just
- 13:25Speaker 1: so much more depth to that and meaning. And I think, like, actually,
- 13:29Speaker 1: where my purpose came from was that, And it wasn't
- 13:32Speaker 1: oh well, now I'm a gold medalist, Like now it
- 13:34Speaker 1: defines me, Like I really didn't think I was going
- 13:38Speaker 1: to have that much weight to it, maybe than when
- 13:40Speaker 1: I was younger, if that makes sense.
- 13:41Speaker 4: So yeah, I don't know.
- 13:43Speaker 1: I think I'm really proud for the internal work that
- 13:45Speaker 1: I've been doing of just like how to separate the
- 13:47Speaker 1: two because it's hard because I just love the sports
- 13:49Speaker 1: so much and I love being around it, so.
- 13:51Speaker 3: Yeah, and to be able to then model that for
- 13:54Speaker 3: the next generation of players and your teammates as they
- 13:58Speaker 3: come up, right, to be able to show them that
- 14:00Speaker 3: it's so much bigger than just the outcome of a
- 14:02Speaker 3: single match.
- 14:03Speaker 1: It is too, And it's like how I'm sure you
- 14:05Speaker 1: feel it too, And like your line of work, it's like,
- 14:07Speaker 1: how do you define success right? And what does success
- 14:10Speaker 1: look like? And how do you want it.
- 14:12Speaker 4: To feel right?
- 14:13Speaker 1: Because you could get it all and have it all,
- 14:15Speaker 1: and there's an emptiness piece that will come with it.
- 14:17Speaker 1: It's I think inevitable, right, because if you dive everything
- 14:21Speaker 1: into it, there's something that you lose a part of you.
- 14:23Speaker 1: You have to be a little delusional. But on the
- 14:26Speaker 1: same side of it is like, how can you have
- 14:28Speaker 1: this like piece that like whatever comes comes as it
- 14:32Speaker 1: may and the outcome is just a byproduct of everything
- 14:35Speaker 1: that's come you know to it. So I'm sure you
- 14:39Speaker 1: can sit back at times where you're like the loneliness
- 14:41Speaker 1: and the quiet work is like rigorous and you're just
- 14:44Speaker 1: like why am I doing this? But like when you
- 14:47Speaker 1: get to some level of success, it's like all right,
- 14:50Speaker 1: this is this is why?
- 14:51Speaker 4: You know.
- 14:52Speaker 3: That's such an important distinction as well, because success isn't
- 14:55Speaker 3: just a thing that happens, It's a feeling that comes
- 14:58Speaker 3: with it. So when you think about success and how
- 15:01Speaker 3: you wanted to feel what comes up for you.
- 15:04Speaker 1: I think it's more like this legacy piece of like Okay,
- 15:08Speaker 1: how was I maybe personally able to impact the sport
- 15:11Speaker 1: but then also impact those around me as far as
- 15:13Speaker 1: like them having internal belief in themselves that they can
- 15:16Speaker 1: do it. And I think that's where I've fallen in
- 15:19Speaker 1: love with the most, is like how do I help
- 15:22Speaker 1: others around me believe that they are unstoppable? And I
- 15:27Speaker 1: don't care about me at all, Like honestly, like I
- 15:30Speaker 1: could have a terrible game and I'm just like whatever,
- 15:33Speaker 1: Like of course I want to be great, but like
- 15:34Speaker 1: it's not like it's not where the worth is coming from,
- 15:37Speaker 1: do you know what I'm saying?
- 15:38Speaker 4: So I think it's.
- 15:39Speaker 1: More about like how are my teammates outcomes more beneficial
- 15:43Speaker 1: that lead to success for them than therefore it kind
- 15:46Speaker 1: of feels like a success or a win for me.
- 15:48Speaker 3: It's so interesting too, because you're saying that this realization
- 15:53Speaker 3: for you really came together at a time when success
- 15:58Speaker 3: was measurable buy the best of the best outcome, right,
- 16:02Speaker 3: But in that time you came to understand that it
- 16:07Speaker 3: was bigger than just walking away with that gold medal.
- 16:10Speaker 1: Exactly totally, which is like you would think, like that
- 16:13Speaker 1: doesn't make sense, but inside, like internally like really like
- 16:16Speaker 1: there's just like this general piece of like I've even
- 16:21Speaker 1: if it wasn't a gold medal, It's like I knew
- 16:23Speaker 1: that I did everything that I could, you know, with
- 16:25Speaker 1: what I had and also what we did as a team,
- 16:28Speaker 1: Like we did everything that we could. We checked all
- 16:30Speaker 1: the boxes to try to do it right, and that's
- 16:33Speaker 1: ultimately what you want and what you hope for.
- 16:35Speaker 4: So there's no complaints there for sure.
- 16:37Speaker 3: Was there a point as you got closer to twenty
- 16:41Speaker 3: twenty twenty twenty one where you're maybe wondering, okay, am
- 16:46Speaker 3: I winding down in Sport and you took a look
- 16:49Speaker 3: at this legacy and you were like, I haven't done
- 16:51Speaker 3: what I wanted to do.
- 16:52Speaker 1: Yet No, I was really at peace with all of it.
- 16:56Speaker 1: I was at a place where I could walk away,
- 16:58Speaker 1: and I think that's what's made these last, you know,
- 17:01Speaker 1: four years even sweeter is like one of my mentors,
- 17:04Speaker 1: su Enquist. You know, she talks about a little bit
- 17:07Speaker 1: of her life like she's living on house money. And
- 17:10Speaker 1: I really feel like I've been granted, you know, luckily
- 17:13Speaker 1: my body has, you know, been able to withstand just
- 17:18Speaker 1: extra years of sport that I get to enjoy and
- 17:22Speaker 1: really taking it as a blessing that I get to continue,
- 17:24Speaker 1: even though I feel like I have been in a
- 17:27Speaker 1: space that I could walk away at any time, and
- 17:29Speaker 1: I don't know if that was ever the case before,
- 17:31Speaker 1: I think I would have it would have been hard
- 17:32Speaker 1: to walk away.
- 17:33Speaker 3: You joke about your age, Does it make you annoyed
- 17:36Speaker 3: when people ask you about it?
- 17:39Speaker 4: Not really.
- 17:40Speaker 1: I really try to like make it lighthearted because there's
- 17:42Speaker 1: days that I'm like even today, like I went, we
- 17:44Speaker 1: went pretty hard these last two days of practice, and
- 17:46Speaker 1: I woke up today and I'm like.
- 17:48Speaker 4: Not too bad. I feel pretty good, you know.
- 17:50Speaker 1: And you know, I'm around like twenty two year olds,
- 17:53Speaker 1: and there's some days we're just different life, you know, situations,
- 17:57Speaker 1: and I don't know, I think I I personally judge
- 18:01Speaker 1: at that age, like I was like, you're over thirty,
- 18:03Speaker 1: what are you doing with your life? But now being
- 18:05Speaker 1: in it, you know, I'm like, do it?
- 18:08Speaker 4: You go? Girl? Like why not?
- 18:10Speaker 1: Like if you love it, like go for it. And
- 18:11Speaker 1: everybody that retires too early, they're like, I wish I
- 18:13Speaker 1: would have stayed. So that's the only advice that I've
- 18:16Speaker 1: ever really heard of, like, oh no, you should retire sooner.
- 18:19Speaker 1: That's never been what I've heard. So like, well, if
- 18:22Speaker 1: I can still do it, why not.
- 18:40Speaker 3: Now? In this new chapter as a co owner of
- 18:44Speaker 3: Love Nebraska, talk to me about what that's been like
- 18:47Speaker 3: for you.
- 18:48Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 18:48Speaker 1: So the last couple of years, I've kind of really
- 18:50Speaker 1: learned more on the business side of just like how
- 18:53Speaker 1: you know, professional sports come together. I'm still learning. There's
- 18:56Speaker 1: a lot of things that I don't fully understand. But
- 18:59Speaker 1: I just love the momentum that Vulliaball is having at
- 19:01Speaker 1: this moment. It feels so different than the past, and
- 19:04Speaker 1: the fact that I get to be home and play
- 19:06Speaker 1: is still and then still be on the side of
- 19:10Speaker 1: learning about business. Really it's cool to see and to understand.
- 19:15Speaker 3: It's so interesting because like, for instance, over the last
- 19:17Speaker 3: few years, I have worked more, let's say, with sports
- 19:21Speaker 3: marketing folks than I have with communications folks. It went
- 19:24Speaker 3: from me writing stories about products to now creating events
- 19:27Speaker 3: that engage consumers and really using a different part of
- 19:31Speaker 3: my brain. So I round this back to as you're
- 19:35Speaker 3: learning more about the business side of things, like what's
- 19:37Speaker 3: been perhaps the biggest surprise for you are really been
- 19:40Speaker 3: something that hey, like I didn't expect that.
- 19:42Speaker 1: Yeah, I think there is just a lot of cohusion.
- 19:44Speaker 1: It's even like the competitive side, you know, of like
- 19:47Speaker 1: understanding and also just relationship building, right, I think, how
- 19:50Speaker 1: do you want to create a culture and business of
- 19:52Speaker 1: like people that you want to surround yourself with? And
- 19:54Speaker 1: I think you can be kind of picky in that
- 19:57Speaker 1: of like who are my partners? Who do we want
- 19:59Speaker 1: this identity to look like and feel like? And I
- 20:02Speaker 1: feel like Nebraska is an interesting market as far as
- 20:05Speaker 1: just you know, there's really no pro sports here, you know,
- 20:08Speaker 1: there haven't been, you know, and like how do we
- 20:10Speaker 1: create this still like you know, Nebraska is not for
- 20:14Speaker 1: everyone slogan, but it really you know what Nebraska really
- 20:17Speaker 1: means to people and what volleyball means across the state,
- 20:20Speaker 1: and so who you choose to go in business with
- 20:23Speaker 1: and partner with really does matter. So I think that
- 20:26Speaker 1: it's the same thing when you're picking a team or
- 20:28Speaker 1: like understanding how a team comes together. There's certain you
- 20:31Speaker 1: know aspects that you want and that you're trying to
- 20:34Speaker 1: build a culture around. So I think there's again there's
- 20:37Speaker 1: more to it as well, but I feel like that
- 20:39Speaker 1: has been like the coolest piece of it too, is
- 20:41Speaker 1: just really getting to know partners.
- 20:42Speaker 3: It's so cool they get to know partners to be
- 20:44Speaker 3: able to build something that will have a lasting legacy
- 20:47Speaker 3: not only in your state, but then of course the
- 20:49Speaker 3: greater magnitude within women's sports. I would be remiss if
- 20:52Speaker 3: we didn't lay some groundwork for people that may not
- 20:55Speaker 3: be familiar with League one to explain not only what
- 20:58Speaker 3: the league is, what it looks like, and perhaps after
- 21:01Speaker 3: we do that, where it's going.
- 21:03Speaker 1: League and bloball started about five years ago at the
- 21:06Speaker 1: club level, where we have been going around like purchasing
- 21:11Speaker 1: a number of clubs. I think now we're up to
- 21:13Speaker 1: eighty youth clubs and kind of just generating this youth
- 21:17Speaker 1: to pro model of and you can kind of, I guess,
- 21:21Speaker 1: compare it a little bit to Overseas professional volleyball. Right,
- 21:24Speaker 1: they don't have collegiate systems, so a lot of their
- 21:28Speaker 1: clubs have a youth program attached to their pro and
- 21:31Speaker 1: that's kind of how they build up to being a pro.
- 21:33Speaker 1: Where ours is a little bit different in the fact
- 21:35Speaker 1: that our youth, you know, twelve to eighteen, we have
- 21:38Speaker 1: club level and then people go on to college and
- 21:40Speaker 1: then we're building hopefully a sustainable model post college and
- 21:43Speaker 1: for athletes to come in and be able to do that.
- 21:46Speaker 1: Now there's two buckets, Love Club and Love Pro. Now
- 21:49Speaker 1: obviously Love Pro came on the scene the last two years,
- 21:52Speaker 1: and we'll continue to grow and we're adding cities as
- 21:55Speaker 1: we go. We just added La last I think it
- 21:57Speaker 1: was a couple of months ago, and we just added
- 22:00Speaker 1: Minnesota team. So going to continue to hopefully expand cities
- 22:03Speaker 1: and expand markets. Volleyball is interesting of like where you know,
- 22:08Speaker 1: popularity is and I think also understanding where these clubs
- 22:11Speaker 1: and where we continue to grow education. But it's volleyball
- 22:14Speaker 1: is the most played youth sport at the moment. And
- 22:16Speaker 1: I think we'll continue to grow as the years go on.
- 22:19Speaker 1: So that's kind of what we're looking at.
- 22:21Speaker 2: It's it's wild.
- 22:22Speaker 3: I was reading up on statistics about volleyball's popularity in
- 22:26Speaker 3: the United States, and I think I read a statistic
- 22:28Speaker 3: or something that was like three hundred thousand young women
- 22:32Speaker 3: play club volleyball in the United States co sign Yeah, something.
- 22:35Speaker 1: I guess I would say it could possibly be more.
- 22:39Speaker 1: I mean, just take for example, when I started playing club,
- 22:41Speaker 1: which was at twelve, which I'm almost forty now, so
- 22:44Speaker 1: it's a long time ago. I mean, I bet there
- 22:46Speaker 1: was five major clubs here in the metro, you know,
- 22:50Speaker 1: eastern part of Nebraska. And at the time, like of
- 22:55Speaker 1: those clubs, there was about two teams per age group,
- 22:58Speaker 1: so again a handful of you know, maybe from that's
- 23:02Speaker 1: from twelve to eighteen. Now it's like there's five, five
- 23:06Speaker 1: to six teams per age group, and then there's a
- 23:09Speaker 1: regional team, and then there's like a non regional team,
- 23:11Speaker 1: so there's travel teams and their home and now they're
- 23:14Speaker 1: also doing it in the middle of high school season.
- 23:16Speaker 1: So if you're not playing high school and you want
- 23:18Speaker 1: to play volleyball, like there's opportunities to play even during
- 23:21Speaker 1: and I'm my mind is like wait, what like and
- 23:25Speaker 1: they're sometimes having to turn kids away, and so it's
- 23:28Speaker 1: I mean here, it's like off the chart, So I
- 23:31Speaker 1: would be shocked if it's not even maybe more than that.
- 23:34Speaker 2: That's because Nebraska is a volleyball state.
- 23:36Speaker 4: We really are, We really are.
- 23:38Speaker 1: We do do differently here, but it has been really
- 23:41Speaker 1: it's been impressive. I think for even me coming back
- 23:43Speaker 1: now and being in the community and just seeing how
- 23:45Speaker 1: much growth has happened is really beautiful.
- 23:47Speaker 2: So it's interesting to me.
- 23:50Speaker 3: Fun fact, this isn't about me, but I'm going to
- 23:52Speaker 3: tell you that I played volleyball in high school my
- 23:54Speaker 3: freshman year, and then I didn't make the JV team
- 23:57Speaker 3: in high school because I couldn't run a mile in
- 24:00Speaker 3: under ten minutes and so I got cut, which we
- 24:03Speaker 3: know is a really unfortunate part of that statistic that
- 24:06Speaker 3: young woman drop out of sport at double the rate
- 24:08Speaker 3: of young men. So hearing you talk about how now
- 24:11Speaker 3: there's so many different avenues for someone to get involved
- 24:14Speaker 3: in a sport like volleyball, it brings me hope and excitement,
- 24:17Speaker 3: and I think it's symbolic and indicative of where we're
- 24:21Speaker 3: going with our culture of encouraging young women to not
- 24:25Speaker 3: only get involved in sport, but really stay in sport.
- 24:29Speaker 1: Oh absolutely, And I I'm sorry about that, by the way,
- 24:32Speaker 1: because it's like running fall I'm like running the mile
- 24:35Speaker 1: on the sport, it actually doesn't.
- 24:37Speaker 3: Apply, you know, could not be farther away from like
- 24:40Speaker 3: something that I needed in the.
- 24:42Speaker 4: White lines exactly. Well.
- 24:43Speaker 1: And then it's also like now you run for a living.
- 24:45Speaker 1: It's like, you know, right, I mean, I mean for fun,
- 24:47Speaker 1: but just that, yeah, exactly. So anyways, it's yeah, you're right,
- 24:52Speaker 1: And I just I think women just stepping into a
- 24:54Speaker 1: place that like we get to do it as a job.
- 24:58Speaker 1: You know. So many of my friends are having babies
- 25:00Speaker 1: and coming back and people are supporting that, like I
- 25:04Speaker 1: don't know if that existed before. And I just am
- 25:06Speaker 1: so excited to see the landscape change and like you said,
- 25:09Speaker 1: opportunities to continue to grow. And now it's like I
- 25:12Speaker 1: think to what I'm most excited about is that the
- 25:15Speaker 1: United States hasn't seen pro volleyball really besides the Olympics,
- 25:18Speaker 1: you know, and so there is a difference you know
- 25:20Speaker 1: between college ball and you know, pro and I hope
- 25:23Speaker 1: that with time and exposure, they're going to continue to
- 25:26Speaker 1: learn more about what the differences are.
- 25:28Speaker 2: And even indoor versus beach.
- 25:30Speaker 3: Right, It's like when we think about the Olympics.
- 25:33Speaker 2: If we go back to that.
- 25:35Speaker 3: So many people were dialed in on what was going
- 25:37Speaker 3: on in front of the Eiffel Tower in the Paris Games,
- 25:40Speaker 3: but there was so much more volleyball that was happening inside.
- 25:45Speaker 1: Absolutely, yes, and I get it, Like, I mean, Eiffel Tower,
- 25:48Speaker 1: like the the beach court was pretty, it was gorgeous,
- 25:51Speaker 1: But no, it is there is a lot of, you know,
- 25:54Speaker 1: volleyball that was happening. But yeah, again, I think it's
- 25:57Speaker 1: just knowledge and exposure and I think that people are
- 25:59Speaker 1: getting behind it. So I'm confident that it's going to
- 26:01Speaker 1: continue to change. And but yeah.
- 26:04Speaker 3: I want to pivot a little bit and talk about
- 26:07Speaker 3: what was going on for you over the last couple
- 26:09Speaker 3: of years. I know that you've spoken out about how
- 26:12Speaker 3: you yourself as an athlete, experienced a bit of burnout
- 26:15Speaker 3: and even commented further to saying that you had been
- 26:18Speaker 3: having a tough time.
- 26:19Speaker 2: What was going on and how are we feeling now?
- 26:21Speaker 1: Yeah, So I think the last time we spoke, that
- 26:24Speaker 1: was you said, twenty twenty one. Yeah, So unfortunately I
- 26:29Speaker 1: had been going through another divorce and this one kind
- 26:34Speaker 1: of came out of left field a little bit.
- 26:36Speaker 4: I didn't.
- 26:37Speaker 1: I was really at a place where I was again
- 26:40Speaker 1: ready to retire and kind of give over the reins
- 26:42Speaker 1: of you know, I feel like as athletes, there's a
- 26:44Speaker 1: selfish layer, even though it's maybe non intentional. It's like, hey,
- 26:47Speaker 1: I have this goal and I'm trying to go and
- 26:50Speaker 1: but also trying to have a family and all these things.
- 26:52Speaker 1: And so I was really at a place where I'm
- 26:55Speaker 1: you know, willing to give up and ready to give
- 26:58Speaker 1: up my playing career and be a wife and a mom.
- 27:01Speaker 1: And unfortunately that didn't work out, and so I was
- 27:04Speaker 1: kind of stuck at a place where I'm like, all right,
- 27:07Speaker 1: well what I had thought my life was going to be,
- 27:10Speaker 1: like we're starting over. And so then I I took
- 27:14Speaker 1: a contract in Italy and I was like, well, maybe
- 27:16Speaker 1: maybe I still want to play, you know, like it
- 27:18Speaker 1: was still like I we'll see. So I took the
- 27:21Speaker 1: contract and I was like, oh my gosh. First of all,
- 27:23Speaker 1: playing in Italy is amazing. And then I really found
- 27:26Speaker 1: that I still love it, you know. And then I
- 27:28Speaker 1: was like, well, it's the national team still on and
- 27:31Speaker 1: I talk to Karch and so then I was like,
- 27:33Speaker 1: all right, well maybe I'll try for Paris. You know,
- 27:35Speaker 1: who's to say, Like, I don't know how I'm gonna feel,
- 27:38Speaker 1: but we'll give it a shot. But I didn't want
- 27:40Speaker 1: to be half in, half out, So I was like,
- 27:42Speaker 1: if I'm committing, I'm going to commit. So went on
- 27:44Speaker 1: to train with the national team. But I also got
- 27:47Speaker 1: into coaching, So I came back to Nebraska trying to
- 27:50Speaker 1: just be around family, having support and kind of really
- 27:54Speaker 1: rebuilding myself because I had lost just a lot of
- 27:58Speaker 1: a lot of me. I think going through divorce of
- 28:00Speaker 1: any kind or breakup is hard on people, and I
- 28:04Speaker 1: was in a pretty rough place and I'm grateful for
- 28:07Speaker 1: the community here. And I kind of got into coaching
- 28:10Speaker 1: a little bit and then was still playing and kind
- 28:12Speaker 1: of got the best of both worlds. So yeah, I
- 28:14Speaker 1: really just started building myself up lots of therapy, and
- 28:18Speaker 1: I feel like today I'm in a place of just
- 28:22Speaker 1: loving myself and finding inner peace and learning that that
- 28:26Speaker 1: is actually the true happiness is where that's at, and
- 28:30Speaker 1: don't get me wrong. There's still hard days, but I
- 28:32Speaker 1: feel like in a really good place now.
- 28:34Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 28:34Speaker 3: I appreciate you for sharing that with me, And I
- 28:36Speaker 3: think that what I'm hearing you say really is that
- 28:39Speaker 3: sports showed up.
- 28:40Speaker 2: For you maybe when you needed it more than ever.
- 28:43Speaker 3: This opportunity to step into this coaching role and really
- 28:48Speaker 3: embrace and continue to develop so many of the skills
- 28:51Speaker 3: that you've already exemplified are so strong for you when
- 28:54Speaker 3: you feel weak.
- 28:55Speaker 2: In other aspects of your life.
- 28:57Speaker 3: To be able to show up on the core work
- 29:00Speaker 3: with others and be that leader that was something that
- 29:02Speaker 3: could help fill your cup back up again.
- 29:05Speaker 4: Oh immensely.
- 29:06Speaker 1: And I am so grateful that the doors were still open,
- 29:09Speaker 1: opportunities were still there. And uh yeah, even the coaching piece,
- 29:12Speaker 1: it was like seeing and teaching, you know, of just
- 29:16Speaker 1: and seeing girls excel and areas that you know you
- 29:20Speaker 1: had a small piece in, you know, seeing them light
- 29:23Speaker 1: up that they learned something new really gave me hope
- 29:25Speaker 1: and happiness. So I'm really grateful, And I but a
- 29:30Speaker 1: lot of work internally. I'm realizing I'm highly codependent, I really, yeah,
- 29:35Speaker 1: just learning a lot of things about myself that I
- 29:37Speaker 1: think it's important to do. It's in If any advice,
- 29:40Speaker 1: I would say being single for a long time, learn
- 29:43Speaker 1: about yourself really truly and find you and then you
- 29:47Speaker 1: can you know, be in a good relationship, healthy relationship,
- 29:51Speaker 1: all things.
- 29:52Speaker 3: So, yeah, we need to talk about your Eprey love
- 29:54Speaker 3: moment in Italy.
- 29:55Speaker 2: Though.
- 29:55Speaker 3: Oh it was amazing, right, amazing and also well it
- 30:00Speaker 3: had to be challenging at times, right because solo travel. Yes,
- 30:04Speaker 3: you have the team, and but it's a different relationship
- 30:07Speaker 3: because you're traveling internationally to play. But I would imagine
- 30:10Speaker 3: it was a lot of both. It was I am
- 30:12Speaker 3: so grateful to be here. It feels so good to
- 30:13Speaker 3: be playing again. And whilst here I am sitting and
- 30:17Speaker 3: eating pasta by myself.
- 30:19Speaker 1: Oh, it was all those feelings all at once. And
- 30:21Speaker 1: you can imagine too, it's like two when you're also
- 30:26Speaker 1: in a marriage, you know, and you have your person,
- 30:28Speaker 1: and it's like you're used to checking in all the time,
- 30:31Speaker 1: you know, and.
- 30:32Speaker 4: You lose that.
- 30:33Speaker 1: It's that was tough, you know, the silence of that,
- 30:36Speaker 1: the heaviness of that, and like you said, being alone
- 30:39Speaker 1: over there, it's like it really taught me to like
- 30:43Speaker 1: I really wanted to run often I was like, I
- 30:45Speaker 1: don't want to be here, but nothing else feels good.
- 30:47Speaker 1: I mean, I want to be here, but like nothing
- 30:49Speaker 1: feels good.
- 30:50Speaker 4: You know.
- 30:50Speaker 1: It's just like I was searching for something when reality
- 30:53Speaker 1: it's all right here. It's just like piecing it all
- 30:55Speaker 1: back together. So, like you said, it was a mix
- 30:59Speaker 1: of all those things. But I've found wonderful community along
- 31:03Speaker 1: the way and it's been really great.
- 31:06Speaker 2: How do you cope with this coming inward of sorts?
- 31:09Speaker 3: Because I think this is something that's actually super relatable
- 31:12Speaker 3: and something that a lot of people struggle with, whether
- 31:14Speaker 3: it is you know, moving on from a relationship or
- 31:17Speaker 3: just really trying to get to this place where you
- 31:18Speaker 3: feel more comfortable with yourself.
- 31:20Speaker 2: Were there any strategies that you used.
- 31:23Speaker 3: Or tools that you needed, journaling, actually physically running, like
- 31:27Speaker 3: what helped you get better with being less codependent and
- 31:31Speaker 3: better with just being Jordan.
- 31:33Speaker 1: Yeah, that's a great question, and I'm still learning kind
- 31:36Speaker 1: of what that is for me. But I would say
- 31:39Speaker 1: I'm a big proponent of therapy, Like I really believe it,
- 31:42Speaker 1: like having someone outside of your life, like have just
- 31:45Speaker 1: a place to like trauma dump, Like just dude, this
- 31:48Speaker 1: is what I'm feeling today like I don't know where
- 31:50Speaker 1: it's coming from.
- 31:51Speaker 4: I don't know why.
- 31:52Speaker 1: I think also learning about where your foundation is. You know,
- 31:55Speaker 1: I grew up in a divorce family. You know though,
- 31:57Speaker 1: all those things kind of have an impact on how
- 32:00Speaker 1: I perceive the world and how I perceive myself. And
- 32:03Speaker 1: then I also think, like I I'm big on routine,
- 32:06Speaker 1: like doing a lot of the same thing every day,
- 32:08Speaker 1: like waking up at the same time, whether that's journaling.
- 32:11Speaker 1: I'm working on what that routine is for me. And
- 32:15Speaker 1: then also sitting, you know, half the time where this
- 32:18Speaker 1: you know, like the instant any feeling of uncertainty comes,
- 32:22Speaker 1: it's like okay, let me just scroll, let me mindlessly scroll,
- 32:24Speaker 1: versus like how much are we actually just sitting in quiet?
- 32:27Speaker 1: And so I'm really working on when those moments of
- 32:30Speaker 1: quietness come and the heaviness comes, like what can I
- 32:33Speaker 1: do to just sit in it? Because oftentimes I just
- 32:36Speaker 1: want to do something to avoid it, so.
- 32:38Speaker 3: We're not the only one sitting in it is hard, right,
- 32:41Speaker 3: Like feeling your feelings is hard.
- 32:43Speaker 1: Yeah, it's hard, But I learned that like actually it
- 32:47Speaker 1: that it's okay to be on my own and that
- 32:50Speaker 1: I am enough on my own and of course I
- 32:53Speaker 1: want to be in a relationship and all the things.
- 32:55Speaker 1: And you know, also my relationship with volleyball, Like what
- 32:58Speaker 1: does that look like? Has that been an outlet? Is
- 33:00Speaker 1: out a safe outlet? Like that's not always going to
- 33:02Speaker 1: be there. So it's like all these internal conversations that
- 33:05Speaker 1: are happening. But yeah, finding just and I think sitting
- 33:09Speaker 1: in gratitude too, Like what are at the end of
- 33:11Speaker 1: the day, what I through things you're grateful for, Like
- 33:13Speaker 1: keeps you rooted in all things, because there's always something
- 33:16Speaker 1: or someone battling something worse than you, and who are
- 33:20Speaker 1: you to think that you're better than that?
- 33:22Speaker 3: So definitely, you know, you're never really alone in how
- 33:25Speaker 3: you feel, like there's someone else out there that's feeling
- 33:27Speaker 3: the way that you're feeling. And it's just recognizing that
- 33:31Speaker 3: you don't have to sit alone in that feeling, recognizing
- 33:35Speaker 3: that there is just more out there.
- 33:38Speaker 1: Absolutely, absolutely so. And I'm like definition of hard. You know,
- 33:42Speaker 1: I think I've gone through a lot of hard things
- 33:44Speaker 1: in my life, but I would say these last couple
- 33:46Speaker 1: of years have been probably the hardest. And I can
- 33:49Speaker 1: say today, you know, they always say, like on the
- 33:50Speaker 1: other side of it is like beautiful, and I will
- 33:53Speaker 1: say that like it is and you can get there,
- 33:56Speaker 1: you know.
- 33:56Speaker 3: Yeah, as you've been getting to be better, are sitting
- 34:01Speaker 3: with Jordan.
- 34:01Speaker 2: I usually say this for the end of the show.
- 34:04Speaker 3: But now when you look in the mirror, what is
- 34:06Speaker 3: it that you see looking back at you.
- 34:09Speaker 1: Yeah, I think that someone who likes to compete at
- 34:15Speaker 1: things right, just in general. But I think at the
- 34:17Speaker 1: base of all of it is that I want to
- 34:20Speaker 1: see the best in everyone, and I want to see
- 34:22Speaker 1: just accept people for where they are, regardless of what
- 34:25Speaker 1: they have coming into the situation or what they have
- 34:29Speaker 1: going on in their life. Like I just want to
- 34:31Speaker 1: meet them where they're at. And that again, even though
- 34:34Speaker 1: I have this hard exterior, like I feel deeply and
- 34:37Speaker 1: I care deeply, I think learning how to translate that
- 34:40Speaker 1: better as I get older is really important for me.
- 34:44Speaker 3: So important, I feel that, especially the older transition. I
- 34:48Speaker 3: feel as though every day that goes by, I'm like,
- 34:51Speaker 3: am I saying what I want to say?
- 34:53Speaker 2: Am I?
- 34:54Speaker 3: I mean this even goes back to your legacy comment, right,
- 34:57Speaker 3: It's like, how am I making people feel?
- 34:59Speaker 2: Because that's the most important piece of the puzzle totally.
- 35:02Speaker 1: And I think there's a balance between like people pleasing right,
- 35:05Speaker 1: because it's like, how do you like go about like, hey,
- 35:07Speaker 1: I'm going to state the truth. The truth may be hard,
- 35:10Speaker 1: but like on the side of like it's coming from
- 35:11Speaker 1: a deep level of care and love, you know. But
- 35:14Speaker 1: then it's also I want to be your friend, you know,
- 35:17Speaker 1: so like can those two things exist?
- 35:18Speaker 4: You know?
- 35:19Speaker 1: So, but I am I'm really grateful for the journey,
- 35:22Speaker 1: and I think, like, yeah, just having more confidence in
- 35:24Speaker 1: who I am and that it's enough and that it's okay.
- 35:43Speaker 3: So how does it feel for you now to be
- 35:46Speaker 3: kind of transitioning into what will ultimately become this mentorship
- 35:51Speaker 3: coaching role. Are you feeling a little nostalgic for what
- 35:54Speaker 3: was or does this excite you a little bit more?
- 35:56Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean I think it's a mix of both.
- 35:58Speaker 1: I really love working at Nebraska, and I don't know,
- 36:01Speaker 1: there's maybe still a door open there in the future,
- 36:03Speaker 1: Like I don't know what that looks like. I would
- 36:05Speaker 1: love to be involved in some capacity, But yeah, I
- 36:08Speaker 1: just think the mentorship piece, it's like, Okay, I know
- 36:11Speaker 1: I was a different athlete, so I think that's where
- 36:13Speaker 1: it can be a little bit different as far as like, Okay,
- 36:15Speaker 1: this is what I did. Now how do I see
- 36:17Speaker 1: these athletes from where they are and then how can
- 36:20Speaker 1: we move the needle for them? So I just love
- 36:22Speaker 1: like thinking about how to problem solve that, Like that
- 36:24Speaker 1: is what I'm most excited for. And I think just
- 36:27Speaker 1: seeing the game from a different eye, you know, of
- 36:30Speaker 1: like how can you still like win or find success
- 36:32Speaker 1: based off of like where your position is. So I'm
- 36:35Speaker 1: really excited for it and kind of seeing what's next time?
- 36:38Speaker 3: What do you want them to have that maybe you
- 36:43Speaker 3: felt like was missing for you.
- 36:46Speaker 2: And I'll give you some context here.
- 36:48Speaker 3: So when I think about the work that I'm doing today,
- 36:51Speaker 3: I don't remember when I was younger and I was
- 36:54Speaker 3: dealing with my own health struggles to be able to
- 36:56Speaker 3: look at someone who I felt like understood when I
- 36:59Speaker 3: was going and throw I was a young woman in
- 37:04Speaker 3: a bigger body who didn't see women in bigger bodies
- 37:06Speaker 3: that were active the way that marketing was at that time,
- 37:09Speaker 3: it was awful, right, So now I get to step
- 37:12Speaker 3: into this role where I can be a resource for
- 37:15Speaker 3: so many people who maybe have felt at.
- 37:18Speaker 2: Some time in a similar way.
- 37:20Speaker 3: So now as you step into this mentorship and this
- 37:22Speaker 3: coaching role, what did you feel like was missing that
- 37:26Speaker 3: you now have an opportunity to bring to the table.
- 37:28Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 37:29Speaker 1: I think it's like the level of IQ, you know,
- 37:31Speaker 1: I think so much of maybe what people perceive, even
- 37:34Speaker 1: from a fans standpoint, it's like, oh, this girl can
- 37:36Speaker 1: jump high and hit hard and kill balls. Right to me,
- 37:39Speaker 1: there's so much more to the game than just being
- 37:41Speaker 1: able to kill a ball. There's a lot of little
- 37:44Speaker 1: plays that aren't on the stat sheet, that aren't seen.
- 37:47Speaker 1: How are you as a teammate, How are you supporting
- 37:49Speaker 1: one another? How are you creating trouble on the other
- 37:52Speaker 1: side of the net, even if it's not killing the ball.
- 37:54Speaker 1: I think there's all these little stats that like we
- 37:57Speaker 1: don't see, but to me, that adds up to a
- 37:59Speaker 1: lot lot more value over time. And I also think
- 38:03Speaker 1: the meaning of success right, like how do you want
- 38:06Speaker 1: it to feel at the end? I think that to
- 38:08Speaker 1: me matters more than you know a winner loss's And
- 38:11Speaker 1: also I think the risk of failure right Sometimes in
- 38:15Speaker 1: our gym we talk about failing fast, like the faster
- 38:18Speaker 1: you fail, the more you learn, and so like, how
- 38:20Speaker 1: is this like risk taking how much risk are you
- 38:23Speaker 1: taking in practice? Because the more risk you take, when
- 38:27Speaker 1: you get to game time, you're you're like, well, I've
- 38:29Speaker 1: done this a thousand times and I've created this risk
- 38:32Speaker 1: and now I know the exact result is what I
- 38:34Speaker 1: want to go. So I think there's a lot of
- 38:36Speaker 1: nuances that can kind of come with it. But I
- 38:38Speaker 1: would say those be the first two.
- 38:40Speaker 3: What do you think the fastest you've ever failed and
- 38:45Speaker 3: learned has been?
- 38:47Speaker 1: Yeah, I would say my first quad on the national
- 38:49Speaker 1: team twenty twelve. Like it was kind of like, hey,
- 38:52Speaker 1: we're going to teach you all these new skills, and
- 38:53Speaker 1: I'm like, wait, what, Like I was, I'm just a
- 38:56Speaker 1: national championship, Like I just want like does that not enough?
- 38:59Speaker 1: You know, like on you know, I should know everything already,
- 39:02Speaker 1: And he was like, no, no, we're going to reteach
- 39:04Speaker 1: you everything and if you don't learn, like you're just
- 39:06Speaker 1: gonna self select out. And I'm like, Okay, well I
- 39:09Speaker 1: better learn and I better learn fast and I'm probably
- 39:13Speaker 1: gonna suck to start, And but I found that, like
- 39:16Speaker 1: I kind of succumbed to that as far as like
- 39:19Speaker 1: this isn't going to be pretty. But sometimes we get
- 39:21Speaker 1: worse before we get better. And I really bought into
- 39:23Speaker 1: that concept. So I'm really grateful for that time, those
- 39:27Speaker 1: first two years, and I think that was probably the
- 39:30Speaker 1: biggest I would say shift for me. That also allowed
- 39:33Speaker 1: my brain to like go there more when I was
- 39:35Speaker 1: learning a new skill along my career.
- 39:38Speaker 3: What do you say to the person that has really
- 39:41Speaker 3: not absorbed this concept of failure as opportunity because for
- 39:47Speaker 3: so many you can get so down and out, and
- 39:50Speaker 3: especially understandably when you've worked hard towards something and it
- 39:54Speaker 3: doesn't go your way, they can get so down and
- 39:57Speaker 3: out and then they're kind of down and out for
- 39:59Speaker 3: a bit. How you embrace perhaps maybe a little bit
- 40:02Speaker 3: more of that fail forward and at times a goldfish mindset?
- 40:07Speaker 4: Yeah, I think exactly.
- 40:08Speaker 1: I think what you just said goldfish like how quickly
- 40:10Speaker 1: we talk about failure recovery, right, like how quickly can
- 40:13Speaker 1: you come out of the bottom right and not sitting
- 40:15Speaker 1: in it? And I think asking for help, asking for resources?
- 40:19Speaker 1: What do those resources look like for you? And maybe
- 40:22Speaker 1: that's even as a different direction, you know, maybe it's
- 40:25Speaker 1: not the path that you are on, Like how do
- 40:27Speaker 1: I try something else or something new? You know, sometimes
- 40:29Speaker 1: when they I don't know. When we're talking about skill development,
- 40:32Speaker 1: sometimes if you just change the environment that you're in
- 40:35Speaker 1: actually creates a different like style of learning or maybe
- 40:38Speaker 1: something that you weren't doing before. So but I think
- 40:41Speaker 1: you're right gold like being goldfish like, it's so true.
- 40:43Speaker 1: But I mean, I will say, even for me, like
- 40:46Speaker 1: as I transition into a different role in the coming years,
- 40:50Speaker 1: you know, it is scary. It's like, well, I've known
- 40:53Speaker 1: exactly how to execute cute a job for the last
- 40:56Speaker 1: thirty years basically, like, well, like what am I getting
- 40:59Speaker 1: to and have the grace that I'm probably not going
- 41:01Speaker 1: to have it figured out and I probably don't know everything.
- 41:04Speaker 1: You've played valibell for a long time. But coaching is different,
- 41:06Speaker 1: you know, And how do I want to be and
- 41:08Speaker 1: how do I want people to feel? That's going to
- 41:10Speaker 1: take time and I think not judging yourself also like
- 41:13Speaker 1: where you're at.
- 41:14Speaker 3: So yeah, you know, as you were saying, the being
- 41:19Speaker 3: willing to embrace those failures and sometimes understand that the
- 41:23Speaker 3: path isn't going to be the one that you envisioned.
- 41:26Speaker 3: It's hard not to then bring us back to that
- 41:29Speaker 3: conversation of you making that hard pivot after your divorce,
- 41:33Speaker 3: right and getting to this place where you had to
- 41:37Speaker 3: fully embrace this is how it is now, and it
- 41:39Speaker 3: was different five minutes ago, and it's going to be
- 41:41Speaker 3: different five minutes from now.
- 41:43Speaker 2: But all I can do is the best I can
- 41:45Speaker 2: in this situation.
- 41:46Speaker 4: Yeah, it's so true.
- 41:47Speaker 1: Well even for you, I'm sure like the marketing piece
- 41:50Speaker 1: now right, like as you're transitioning, like if you would
- 41:52Speaker 1: have probably just stayed in your lane, like you would
- 41:54Speaker 1: have never had these opportunities. And sometimes it's like maybe
- 41:58Speaker 1: we're just not looking in the right places, you know,
- 42:00Speaker 1: maybe there's opportunities in other facets that you know you're
- 42:04Speaker 1: risking something else and maybe you still feel there, you know,
- 42:07Speaker 1: you don't know, but unless you're kind of and it
- 42:11Speaker 1: really just depends internally how you are, because there's some
- 42:13Speaker 1: days where I was like I can't get out of bed,
- 42:15Speaker 1: you know, like there is just the heaviness of the day,
- 42:18Speaker 1: everything that's going on, Like those things are real and
- 42:21Speaker 1: like you're almost paralyzed that you're just like nothing doesn't matter,
- 42:25Speaker 1: you know, and it's I don't know, I think like
- 42:28Speaker 1: having community around you that can continue to encourage and
- 42:30Speaker 1: breathe light into you, I think is equally just as important.
- 42:33Speaker 3: It's so important, and also doing that audit of what's
- 42:37Speaker 3: important to you. I haven't talked about this much on
- 42:39Speaker 3: the show, but there's a lot of runners that listen
- 42:41Speaker 3: to the show. Understandably, I'm a runner as well. But
- 42:44Speaker 3: I had to make a conscious decision on what I
- 42:47Speaker 3: wanted to do and how I wanted to keep learning
- 42:50Speaker 3: and moving forward. I didn't want to just have conversation
- 42:54Speaker 3: with female runners. I love them, they're amazing, but I
- 42:57Speaker 3: wanted to grow and understand the mindset for women who
- 43:00Speaker 3: are the best to do what they do across sport,
- 43:03Speaker 3: across wellness. And that's why I'm entering into this new
- 43:06Speaker 3: chapter for the show, because.
- 43:08Speaker 2: I want to keep learning.
- 43:09Speaker 3: Just like you, you ask yourself at the beginning of
- 43:11Speaker 3: a new season, am I done learning yet? And when
- 43:14Speaker 3: you look around you and you see that there's still
- 43:15Speaker 3: opportunity to garner new inspiration and continue to be a
- 43:20Speaker 3: student of the sport, that's what keeps you coming back
- 43:22Speaker 3: for more.
- 43:23Speaker 1: Absolutely absolutely, And I think, yeah, you just keep expanding
- 43:27Speaker 1: on that and it's and it's beautiful to learn and
- 43:29Speaker 1: it's hard though. It's like man, but if you think
- 43:31Speaker 1: you got it all figured out, then that's the wrong
- 43:33Speaker 1: for me. It's like the wrong place to be as well.
- 43:36Speaker 1: So and I think I just never I've always had
- 43:39Speaker 1: this general layer of curiosity, like just tell me what
- 43:41Speaker 1: it is, even for you, I'm like, let me ask
- 43:43Speaker 1: you all these questions.
- 43:44Speaker 4: I want to know, like why do you want to
- 43:45Speaker 4: do what you do? You know?
- 43:46Speaker 1: Like I love that you're curious, and I think, like,
- 43:50Speaker 1: in my we need more of it, you know. I
- 43:52Speaker 1: think it's we have so much access at our hands now,
- 43:55Speaker 1: which is great, you know, and I believe that we're
- 43:58Speaker 1: more educated, but yeah, I love that the curiosity piece too.
- 44:02Speaker 3: How do you think that your curiosity is working to
- 44:04Speaker 3: your advantage right now?
- 44:05Speaker 2: In this chapter?
- 44:07Speaker 1: I think just embracing changes, you know, like what it's
- 44:10Speaker 1: not going to feel great, you know, because it's different,
- 44:13Speaker 1: that's okay, and that doesn't mean it's wrong, and that
- 44:16Speaker 1: remain curious and keep asking questions, and that it's never
- 44:20Speaker 1: I am grateful. My mom was always like, hey, there's
- 44:23Speaker 1: no dumb questions, like just keep asking, you know. And
- 44:26Speaker 1: I think that there's something to be said about that,
- 44:28Speaker 1: and I feel like that has always remained true to me.
- 44:31Speaker 1: It's just like I'm going to ask you probably a
- 44:32Speaker 1: bajillion questions, but I'm probably going to get to the route,
- 44:35Speaker 1: you know eventually. You know.
- 44:36Speaker 3: So ninety nine point nine percent of the time, what
- 44:39Speaker 3: I have found is that if you have a question
- 44:41Speaker 3: and you're worrying that it's a dumb question, more often
- 44:44Speaker 3: than not, someone sitting next to you at that exact
- 44:47Speaker 3: moment probably has the exact same one totally totally.
- 44:50Speaker 1: And it's like, well, if you're the person that just asks,
- 44:52Speaker 1: like cares, but yeah, I'm the same. I'm like, just
- 44:55Speaker 1: ask the question like it's okay, And the person that's
- 44:57Speaker 1: even the one that is being asked the question, you're like, oh,
- 44:59Speaker 1: I've totally why you would ask that, you know. So
- 45:01Speaker 1: it's more of us like having the internal battle ourselves
- 45:04Speaker 1: than actually what the perception of reality is.
- 45:07Speaker 3: What's your hope moving forward when we think about love.
- 45:13Speaker 1: Love in general, or love that I mean, whatever you
- 45:15Speaker 1: want to take, Where are we going with that?
- 45:18Speaker 4: No?
- 45:18Speaker 1: No, honestly, for League one, I just really hope that
- 45:24Speaker 1: I don't know, that people continue to fall in love
- 45:26Speaker 1: with the sport, and that having access to a higher
- 45:28Speaker 1: level only brings more depth of love and expansion, and
- 45:32Speaker 1: that we can continue to elevate female in sport and
- 45:35Speaker 1: really giving them opportunities to see a life as a
- 45:37Speaker 1: professional athlete at home, you know, and that having a
- 45:41Speaker 1: baby and coming back is a possibility and you can
- 45:44Speaker 1: have both and do very well at them. And then
- 45:47Speaker 1: for love, for me, it's like loving myself and loving
- 45:50Speaker 1: where I'm at and just taking it a day at
- 45:51Speaker 1: a time.
- 45:52Speaker 3: I appreciate that you answered both sides of that question.
- 45:55Speaker 3: It wasn't even intentional. Candidly, I don't foresee a world
- 45:58Speaker 3: where League one doesn't continue to grow to rapid fanfare.
- 46:06Speaker 2: I believe right now.
- 46:08Speaker 3: With the culture that we're seeing within women in sport
- 46:11Speaker 3: and also with what we've seen with the WNBA. I mean,
- 46:14Speaker 3: we're finally looking at a CBA that's a minimum salary
- 46:18Speaker 3: of one point one million per player, like that's been
- 46:21Speaker 3: so long in the making. So the momentum is there,
- 46:25Speaker 3: and that conversation wouldn't even be possible had it not
- 46:29Speaker 3: been for that momentum.
- 46:31Speaker 1: Oh absolutely, And that I just got chills because it's
- 46:34Speaker 1: like I don't know to think about, you know, I
- 46:38Speaker 1: a lot of volleyball players that have committed you know,
- 46:41Speaker 1: two cycles Olympics, you know, are still having to work right,
- 46:44Speaker 1: and I think they want to work right. And so
- 46:47Speaker 1: I think about most men that are in professional sports
- 46:49Speaker 1: in the United States, like once they retire, like it's
- 46:52Speaker 1: like they really don't have to work, Like they can
- 46:55Speaker 1: be at home, they can do all these things. And
- 46:56Speaker 1: so the fact is, like, now we have women that
- 46:59Speaker 1: could be making that and like setting themselves up for
- 47:03Speaker 1: a wonderful future that they can be home with their
- 47:05Speaker 1: families and they get to choose what they want to
- 47:07Speaker 1: do post retirement. And the freedom that comes with that
- 47:11Speaker 1: is like just immense. And so I think that not
- 47:13Speaker 1: only am I excited, like you said, to like continue
- 47:16Speaker 1: to see the expansion, but just also the freedom, the
- 47:19Speaker 1: financial freedom, the personal freedom that the love that you
- 47:23Speaker 1: have for the sport can go somewhere and do something
- 47:25Speaker 1: bigger than what we ever imagine.
- 47:27Speaker 2: It's so true.
- 47:28Speaker 3: Now you just said some people keeping up other jobs.
- 47:32Speaker 3: What's the craziest job that you know someone has maintained
- 47:36Speaker 3: while playing pro volleyball?
- 47:38Speaker 4: Oh my goodness.
- 47:40Speaker 1: You know, I've been lucky that I've been surrounded that
- 47:42Speaker 1: people continue they can they can have just only that life.
- 47:45Speaker 1: But it's like post retirement, they have to do something.
- 47:48Speaker 1: So I will say, though there are certain countries. You know,
- 47:51Speaker 1: when I played in Puerto Rico, it was like we
- 47:53Speaker 1: had to have a practice in the evening because everybody
- 47:56Speaker 1: was working at nine to five, so it was only
- 47:58Speaker 1: eight o'clock practice eight to ten. And it's not normal
- 48:01Speaker 1: to just be a professional athletes. So I wouldn't say
- 48:03Speaker 1: there's a crazy job that I've heard per se, but
- 48:05Speaker 1: there are even now I have a teammate now she's
- 48:07Speaker 1: working typically two jobs, you know, remotely that she's you know,
- 48:11Speaker 1: still trying to she wants to buy a house, and
- 48:13Speaker 1: it's just like, wait, what are we doing? What?
- 48:16Speaker 2: You know, how does this work.
- 48:18Speaker 3: It's many years ago I wrote this article on this
- 48:20Speaker 3: female cycling team out of California, and I interviewed a
- 48:25Speaker 3: handful of the ladies and all of them had crazy
- 48:30Speaker 3: cool jobs before they finally decided, Okay, I'm gonna go
- 48:34Speaker 3: out on a whim and try to follow my passion. Right.
- 48:37Speaker 2: Many of them.
- 48:38Speaker 3: Were teachers or doctors or lawyers, and then they were like,
- 48:42Speaker 3: life is too short not to at least give this
- 48:45Speaker 3: a full try.
- 48:46Speaker 2: And I just thought, that is so awesome.
- 48:48Speaker 3: You're not talking to respectfully male pro cyclists who were
- 48:52Speaker 3: former lawyers and doctors.
- 48:54Speaker 2: They just went all in on that from the get go.
- 48:56Speaker 1: I know it's so true, and I commend people that
- 48:59Speaker 1: are able to do that, that are even in a
- 49:01Speaker 1: profession for twenty plus years, and like, actually, I want
- 49:03Speaker 1: to go back to school like that is like that
- 49:06Speaker 1: is bravery at its finest. So it's yeah, cool.
- 49:09Speaker 2: And it's finest.
- 49:10Speaker 3: Okay, So before I let you go here, today, we
- 49:14Speaker 3: are thinking about the next year of Love.
- 49:17Speaker 2: It's something to look forward to.
- 49:19Speaker 3: Now we have Love Nebraska, what will be changing for you?
- 49:24Speaker 3: It's interesting for me this like dichotomy of being a
- 49:27Speaker 3: player and a co owner. Is that weird at times
- 49:30Speaker 3: for you?
- 49:31Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 49:32Speaker 1: The first conversation we had a first team meeting, it
- 49:33Speaker 1: was like one of my teammates like, so, can you
- 49:35Speaker 1: fire me? And I was like no, Like, I mean,
- 49:38Speaker 1: it's a real legit question, right, especially if you're not
- 49:41Speaker 1: really maybe understanding the business side. But yeah, no, it's uh,
- 49:45Speaker 1: it's fine. And I feel like we've kind of had
- 49:47Speaker 1: that conversation of what that looks like. But luckily that
- 49:51Speaker 1: the ownership piece and that they've just allowed me to
- 49:53Speaker 1: continue and embrace this year of playing and really enjoy
- 49:57Speaker 1: the process as I go. So what I'm really just
- 49:59Speaker 1: excited for. I love the girls that I feel like
- 50:02Speaker 1: we created a great foundation last year and it feels
- 50:04Speaker 1: very seamless as we come into season two now, and
- 50:08Speaker 1: as we continue to ramp up and there's excitement for
- 50:10Speaker 1: the for the season, I'm I don't know. I think
- 50:13Speaker 1: it's gonna look different, it's gonna feel different, And we
- 50:15Speaker 1: learned a lot first year, and I think it's gonna
- 50:17Speaker 1: be even better this year.
- 50:18Speaker 3: Biggest learning from year one.
- 50:22Speaker 4: I think we just didn't know. You know.
- 50:24Speaker 1: It's like we're we're creating these positions in a place
- 50:27Speaker 1: that we've never seen before, right, So almost this layer
- 50:31Speaker 1: of expectation of like, oh, right, well, this is what
- 50:34Speaker 1: it should look like and how it should be, and
- 50:35Speaker 1: it's just like, but we really don't know, right And
- 50:38Speaker 1: so now coming into year two, it's like, all right, now,
- 50:41Speaker 1: I know exactly how I want this to look, how
- 50:43Speaker 1: I wanted to feel. And last year it wasn't bad.
- 50:46Speaker 1: There was a little clunkiness, you know, of just you know,
- 50:49Speaker 1: maybe travel or you know, scheduling or something like that.
- 50:52Speaker 1: But I think it's you know, we're learning now. It's like,
- 50:55Speaker 1: all right, we're hitting the ground run. And now we
- 50:57Speaker 1: have a new facility that we're in, which is absolutely beautiful,
- 50:59Speaker 1: and I don't know, it feels so much more just
- 51:02Speaker 1: ready and wholesome this.
- 51:04Speaker 2: Year ready and wholesome.
- 51:05Speaker 3: You know, in order to do something different, you have
- 51:08Speaker 3: to do things that are different, right, and so to
- 51:10Speaker 3: create something from scratch is hard, regardless of what you're
- 51:14Speaker 3: working on. But to do it with such momentum like
- 51:17Speaker 3: we saw in year one, I can only imagine that
- 51:19Speaker 3: really exciting and good things are ahead for you all. Now,
- 51:23Speaker 3: final question for you, Jordan. I really appreciate how you
- 51:27Speaker 3: opened up today about what you've been going through over
- 51:28Speaker 3: the last few years. I think that vulnerability is just
- 51:31Speaker 3: so important for so many people listening.
- 51:33Speaker 2: Knowing what you know, now, what.
- 51:35Speaker 3: Advice would you give yourself, Let's say, even like twenty
- 51:38Speaker 3: twenty three, twenty twenty four, are going through that Hurtle moment.
- 51:42Speaker 1: Yeah, I think that there was moments where I was
- 51:44Speaker 1: still trying to like run, you know, like I internally
- 51:48Speaker 1: was just like I want to feel good and like
- 51:51Speaker 1: seeking in maybe places that I shouldn't have, you know,
- 51:53Speaker 1: and whether that's you know, I don't know, putting myself
- 51:58Speaker 1: in positions that I just shouldn't have been in, you know.
- 52:01Speaker 1: And but like the feeling of depth of emotion that
- 52:04Speaker 1: I was feeling that I was just like, man, I
- 52:05Speaker 1: don't know, something just not right. And so I think
- 52:09Speaker 1: I would go back to tell myself that like, it's
- 52:11Speaker 1: gonna hurt, but that doesn't mean that that's wrong, that
- 52:15Speaker 1: like even in the pain and the hurt, like it's
- 52:17Speaker 1: okay to sit in it, and that on the other
- 52:20Speaker 1: side of like taking the time to heal internally, like
- 52:24Speaker 1: it's gonna be worth it. So I think I'm kind
- 52:26Speaker 1: of hitting that. I would say the last year or
- 52:29Speaker 1: so of just this piece, I think I wish I
- 52:31Speaker 1: would have done that maybe a little bit sooner. So
- 52:33Speaker 1: I'm I'm really grateful and never I probably never would
- 52:37Speaker 1: have said that a couple of years ago, because it
- 52:39Speaker 1: was it was hard, but it's been a really good
- 52:42Speaker 1: journey of just finding who I am again.
- 52:44Speaker 3: Hard but better for it again. Thank you so much
- 52:46Speaker 3: for sharing so much with us today. I'm so excited
- 52:49Speaker 3: that we were able to sit down again. It's been
- 52:51Speaker 3: too long, Jordan. For those that aren't following along with
- 52:53Speaker 3: you on social just yet give us the details.
- 52:57Speaker 1: Yeah, so you can follow me on Instagram at gov
