- 0:02Yeah, lace them up another way. Another.
- 0:12Easy double, Yeah, from the track to the rodeo we talk that
- 0:17talk splits on the watch, but we still take the Mick.
- 0:19Dean in Perth with the long run legs going, breaks the fire when
- 0:22the session gets thick. Ryan in the mix with the numbers
- 0:24and plans from Everson to medals.
- 0:26Yeah, we break it all down. Hard graft Monday left about a
- 0:28Sunday. Still chasing peeves while the
- 0:30world spins round miles in the bank.
- 0:33Hello and welcome back to the Easy Double Podcast.
- 0:35This is episode 54. I'm joined by one team member
- 0:40rather than two for the time being, and that team member is
- 0:43Dean Menzies. How you doing Sunday evening?
- 0:46Good mate, is it Monday? It feels like Monday evening.
- 0:50Right. Yeah, does feel like a Sunday
- 0:51though. WA day today over here, isn't
- 0:55it? So we've had the had the day
- 0:57off. Yeah.
- 0:59So is that just a state public holiday then at the interstates
- 1:04when I had that? Yeah, that's right.
- 1:06So I think that's why the share market and those sorts of things
- 1:08were open today. So, but yeah, good to have the
- 1:12day off work, that's for sure. Which is why we were able to get
- 1:16out on the bike for best part of three hours or something this
- 1:19morning. We did.
- 1:21It was our first venture, well first venture back to the hills
- 1:26since we got got taught a few lessons.
- 1:30When was that? September last year when we
- 1:33first went out there as we were pretty green to the bike back
- 1:36then. Got humbled by the triathletes
- 1:39when I was in the running shoes back then.
- 1:42So yeah, so remind me we did. Were you, were you just pushing
- 1:46that you didn't have clipping shoes at that point?
- 1:48Were you just in a pair of 1080s or something?
- 1:51Yeah, remember we, I think we met at the running centre with
- 1:55some of the triathlon group from Front Runner and RAF was like
- 1:58getting a photo of everyone outside the shop before we set
- 2:01off. And a few of the lads were like
- 2:04poking fun and looking and laughing and being like, you
- 2:07haven't got a clue what you're in for, have you?
- 2:09Even like now looking back, like I think I would poke funny.
- 2:14Like that's how much we've changed, I think.
- 2:17You're as unaware as I was. Yeah.
- 2:19Oh yeah. I just think we're just out
- 2:21there having a go, weren't we? Yeah.
- 2:24We did spend more time at the coffee shop that day then doing
- 2:30loops at Pickering Brook, at least that that definitely
- 2:32changed today, happy to admit. Yeah, what was the, the plan was
- 2:37to like commute out to the hills and then the workout was once
- 2:40you got there, what is it like maybe like a four to six K loop
- 2:43where you kind of do like your threshold efforts and you and I
- 2:47just put like a couple of coffees away whilst the lads
- 2:50done theirs, didn't we? Well, our threshold was to the
- 2:53base of the, it's like a three kilometer climb, I think is an
- 2:56up Welsh Pool Rd., some 3-4 hundred meters of elevation,
- 3:00like a pretty tough climb. But I was that I just remember
- 3:03that day being that tired just to get there, that yeah, there's
- 3:09a bit of me probably still left out there.
- 3:11Yeah, well, we best get cracking because if Owen joins the
- 3:14podcast and we're talking about cycling, I think he'll just
- 3:17leave straight away. Should we?
- 3:19Should just mention your your work down Welshpool Rd.
- 3:22So we didn't write up it today, but your work down Welshpool Rd.
- 3:25Today was pretty impressive. Yeah, 8, I just looked back on
- 3:30some of the recycling's weird on Strava, you finish a ride and
- 3:34you've got like a million segments.
- 3:36Not you've, you've claimed them, but you've been through so many,
- 3:39you know, compared to when you run, it's quite overwhelming.
- 3:42And yeah, there's some scary fast numbers from those
- 3:46descents, like into the 80 kilometers an hour, which I
- 3:50joke, didn't I, that my mum would be giving me a slap on the
- 3:53wrist if she knew about this. We did.
- 3:55We did joke about that. I was just, my mum may be
- 3:59listening. I was a lot.
- 4:00I was quite a way behind you all night.
- 4:04My mum actually probably will be listening.
- 4:06To be fair to us, we we have got a lot more sensible on the bike.
- 4:10I think we've improved a lot. We even did some good signalling
- 4:14today I thought. A little bit tongue in cheek at
- 4:16times, but genuine, you know, at other times.
- 4:20Yeah, the runners won't be aware of this.
- 4:22All the all the hand gestures that the cyclists use to
- 4:25communicate whilst riding. It's a home of sign language,
- 4:28isn't it? Yeah.
- 4:30I'm still not fully across it, but I think we're getting there.
- 4:33We just poked furiously at things that we see on the side
- 4:36of the road, I think. But yeah, Owen shall be joining
- 4:39us. He'll be tuning in.
- 4:40To recap, Yesterday he raced the Irish National 3000 meter
- 4:44indoors. So we'll hear all about that.
- 4:48Hopefully you'll join us in good time and behind closed doors.
- 4:52Well, I guess in public view easy double this week.
- 4:55It's been a massive week. We've released the first episode
- 4:58of London Colon, which it seems like has been a big hit amongst
- 5:02listeners. If you haven't already checked
- 5:04that one out, it's we're building up to London Marathon
- 5:08with Jake Smith, Jake Barclough, France of Japan and Tim Vincent.
- 5:12So we're going to Dean Owen and I will rotate the host in and
- 5:16we'll we'll chat maybe every other week or so, check in with
- 5:20the lads how they're getting on in the build to London.
- 5:23So I guess the next episode will be fun given Jake's just
- 5:28attempted to race Tokyo Marathon this weekend.
- 5:30So we'll, we'll unpack that a little bit and hear about think
- 5:34Tim said he he had a half marathon.
- 5:36I think it's next weekend. So it depends when we'll when
- 5:40we'll schedule it in potentially we'll capture the aftermath of
- 5:44that. So did you tune in in the week?
- 5:48I did, I had the benefit. I'd certainly, I mean, look, I
- 5:52really enjoy chatting to the guys, but it was nice to be on
- 5:54the other side of just consuming the content.
- 5:58But yeah, they're lovely, lovely, lovely guys.
- 6:01All a little bit different in terms of, you know, some people
- 6:04more data-driven, others more like, I feel, I feel like you
- 6:08had all three parts of the spectrum of Jake, Jake Smith
- 6:16being quite data focused and taking his lactates and, you
- 6:20know, giving context for why he why he does that.
- 6:23And then Tim that sits a little bit in the middle and then Jack
- 6:28or ran to Japan or Jake as he's more commonly known as.
- 6:31But given you have two Jakes on the on another end of the
- 6:35spectrum, which is, you know, adopt the Japanese method of
- 6:40running lots of KS and runty eyes blade.
- 6:44So it was really good. I, yeah, really enjoyed hearing
- 6:48the chat. And I think like with the major
- 6:52marathons and it's a little bit like that.
- 6:55I think with Tokyo as well, it's hard to build a narrative in
- 7:00your mind about what you want to get excited to get behind with
- 7:04some of those races. Like I spent that much on the
- 7:06long run trying to find a YouTube feed that I could then
- 7:10even just follow the race, let alone have stories that I really
- 7:14of runners that I really want to get behind and cheer for.
- 7:17So, yeah, it's it's so, you know, thanks so much for to you
- 7:22really for sort of being the the brains and bringing to life
- 7:25these really cool stories and for the guys getting on to talk
- 7:27about it because it's yeah, it's good listening.
- 7:31Yeah, it's a funny 1 isn't it? Because the three such big
- 7:34personalities well known in the sport and also incredible,
- 7:38incredibly talented athletes, I almost felt like a pressure
- 7:42going into it to like justify like their existence.
- 7:46Like everyone kind of loves all of them individually.
- 7:49It's like shit, there's going to be expectation that like this
- 7:52this series is going to be fun and a good lesson.
- 7:54But it seems like it has landed well.
- 7:56And I guess that's just kudos to the guys for being so open and
- 8:00how they speak and stuff. I wonder, I was thinking if we
- 8:06if those three were like, obviously they're not team easy
- 8:09double. But let's just say, for example,
- 8:11they are Team Easy double in the race against Team Kenya, Uganda,
- 8:16the rest of Great Britain where they would stack up, you know,
- 8:19on the first three across the line, the points total.
- 8:24That'd do all right. They they could be up there.
- 8:26We'll see. I'll we'll throw it to them one
- 8:28episode towards the start of the race.
- 8:31And we also released the Jeff Stenson interview, which Dean
- 8:34took the lead on and done a very good job in preparing for that.
- 8:37And we walked through Jester's entire career.
- 8:40Did you enjoy that one? I did I mean, I was probably
- 8:43said to you off air, but I was quite nervous.
- 8:46I mean, and it's such AI feel like there's so many questions
- 8:50to ask, how many more questions you could ask to unpack.
- 8:53And yeah, it felt difficult to do justice to, you know, to it
- 9:00all, but she's so she's such a nice person.
- 9:05And she was so willing to share, which was really nice.
- 9:07Like, she was so open off air as well, just talking about her
- 9:11pregnancy experience and just very kind to us.
- 9:14So yeah, it was really good. It's nice, isn't it?
- 9:17Like you don't have to be such an open book as someone in the
- 9:21public eye, like everyone can see you, your races and your
- 9:24results. So you could just speak about
- 9:26that if you want. You don't really need to unpack
- 9:28it or go any deeper or speak about anything behind the
- 9:31scenes. But it's nice that she was so
- 9:33willing. And last couple bits of
- 9:35housekeeping, we have collaborated with the guests,
- 9:39the Running Centre, which is a local footwear nutrition shop in
- 9:43the running space and by Coach Raff in Perth here.
- 9:47And they have started doing these activations where the
- 9:50brand's rolling through Perth, whether it be Puma, Brooks on,
- 9:55ASICS, whoever it is, they bring down their latest range of
- 9:59footwear. Everyone who does the shop run
- 10:01tries them on, goes for a run and then just has a chat
- 10:04afterwards. So we've teamed up with the run
- 10:07centre for one or a week on Wednesday, which will be the
- 10:1011th of March, and I believe it's Puma in collaboration with
- 10:14that one and they will have the Deviate Nitro Four and the
- 10:17Deviate Nitro Elite 3 for try ONS there.
- 10:20So if you're in around the area, get down to the shop run.
- 10:24I think it's 530 start, 5:30 meet for a 545 start.
- 10:30So hopefully see you there. We'll have a couple of entries
- 10:33to the HBF run for a reason to give away and I'm sure a couple
- 10:38of easy double caps as well. So because anyone?
- 10:41We've done that before and hopefully I'm not talking out of
- 10:43turn here, but like in terms of like the ASICS mum where we got
- 10:46to do a bit of a wear test and get a feel for some of the shoes
- 10:49and feel like refs doing a good job and Sam at the running
- 10:53center of like getting access to the, you know, product guys
- 10:58literally rock out with bags of shoes that we can try on.
- 11:01And I think for a lot of people, like people often ask me for a
- 11:05recommendation, it's quite difficult because each foot is
- 11:09different and each stride and everyone's stride mechanics are
- 11:12different. So like even for me I got to try
- 11:14on a few different shoes with that one on and something
- 11:18similar for on and you so you get a bit more insight into what
- 11:21shoe might feel good for you before you have to shell out 300
- 11:24odd bucks. That's good.
- 11:27Yeah, it's it's good that the brands are like so willing to
- 11:30come into the community because I mean, they sell issues
- 11:33regardless. So it's kind of it's just like
- 11:36an extra service. And then, yeah, RAF and Sam for
- 11:39kind of like pulling it all together, right.
- 11:42This episode. Then we've got plenty of results
- 11:44to whiz through and then Owens race recap.
- 11:47So Tokyo Marathon, Glasgow Indoors, Hobart Track Classic,
- 11:51USA Indoors and the controversial USA Half Marathon
- 11:56Championships, which you may have seen, got some news in the
- 11:59form of a big ban from a former global medalist.
- 12:05I guess she's former now because she's been stripped of them.
- 12:07She's probably got some others there, to be fair.
- 12:09YouTube Diaries, Double trouble. So let's get into it.
- 12:14I should just say before I do, if you haven't already, I have a
- 12:18quick ask for you. Could you please follow the show
- 12:21on whatever platform that you're listening to us on now, whether
- 12:24that be Spotify or Apple. This is so you don't miss any
- 12:28interviews and also it's just your way of showing us some
- 12:31support because Spotify constantly tells us that it will
- 12:35benefit us massively. So I'm just passing that the
- 12:44cheeky actually the other week they were like shows with
- 12:46listeners similar to yours, have X percent more followers.
- 12:50And I was like, oh, do they cheers.
- 12:56The Irish man has actually joined us just in time when we
- 13:00were slightly behind schedule. We're only just going into the
- 13:02running results. But whenever you're ready, we
- 13:06can we can flick to your race recap.
- 13:08Shall I do the first set of results first?
- 13:11Are you ready to go? No, I don't mind.
- 13:13It wouldn't be like used to behind schedule anyway.
- 13:18We've we've spent 10 minutes talking about cycling, mate.
- 13:22Wow, thank God I missed that. Painful.
- 13:28Yeah, we thought it was much, I said to Dean.
- 13:30We best wrapped this up now because if Owen joins, they'll
- 13:32be leaving straight away. I can't hang around because I
- 13:36have a flight to catch in an hour and a half and that's good.
- 13:40Well, fortunately for me. Where are you?
- 13:43I'm going to Rome until Friday. Nice.
- 13:48This is a holiday. Like a holiday the runners I
- 13:53might I bring them because they're comfy, but I doubt much
- 13:56running, if any, will be will be done on my job one day.
- 13:59But nothing I'm getting the detox.
- 14:03I'm due a break. Have you been?
- 14:04To. I've never been thrown before
- 14:07now. So we've booked a Colosseum.
- 14:09I've got a fucking shopping list for the Vatican, my granny and
- 14:15mother and father. Yeah.
- 14:19So no. Sure, there's lots to see and do
- 14:21in room. I'm just gonna.
- 14:22My plan is breakfast, pasta, lunch, pizza and then dinner
- 14:27Gelato. So I'll be I'll be rolling back
- 14:31home. Have you been to Ramdin?
- 14:35Yeah, 2015, I think maybe. Oh, and were you?
- 14:40You're out of nappies by then, right?
- 14:43To what age? What year?
- 14:4515 out of that I. Was fucking 17.
- 14:48There you go. Oh, yeah.
- 14:51No, I was a belated honeymoon house and I got married in 2015.
- 14:56And then, yeah, July. So our winter, European summer.
- 15:00I remember, yeah, doing like going through parts of like
- 15:05doing a lot of the tours around Rome.
- 15:08It was stinking hot. I just remember being quite warm
- 15:10when we were there, but good, very similar.
- 15:14I had lots of pizza ice cream usual, so that's good.
- 15:19Unbelievable city it's. Not meant to be that warm when
- 15:21I'm there, but just be. It should be just nice.
- 15:24I'll have to dig it out. There's like a little St. horse
- 15:29almost that does like pasta in a box near the Spanish step,
- 15:33somewhere in that square is like €5 or something take away, but
- 15:37like proper authentic. Because then on the other side
- 15:41of that, if you book somewhere near the Coliseum, like with a
- 15:44view of that, you'll get absolutely shafted.
- 15:46Yeah. Yeah.
- 15:48I think we might have done like a walking food tour through
- 15:51there. You know how you can do the
- 15:52like, the way to like taste different parts of the town?
- 15:57Any wine? Would have been a bit, yeah.
- 16:00Would have been, no drunk. I'm a winemaker these days
- 16:02though, so just drink my own produce.
- 16:05Used to have changed. Years have changed so.
- 16:07Much I don't want to go back there, but yeah, we we have we
- 16:12were talking about just how much we've changed based on we we
- 16:15we're in the hills today on we did a hills ride.
- 16:19But yeah. Yeah, I'm just reminiscing on
- 16:22with Ryan when he rocked up in a pair of sneakers with no clip in
- 16:26shoes to he was he was like a gazelle up the hills today,
- 16:30dropping all the all the cyclists riding off into the
- 16:33distance. So.
- 16:35What'd you do with you at Along right?
- 16:39I don't think so. Maybe like in like 10 years or
- 16:43something you. Could be a young RAF.
- 16:45Yeah, that's the problem. He's certainly heading that way.
- 16:54But anyway, we can go on. Let's.
- 16:57Get some running. Yeah, yeah.
- 17:00All right, so let's just go through my week and then the
- 17:02race. Yeah, however you want.
- 17:04Yeah, so Monday was the bird attack day.
- 17:08We went through that was just 10K at four 30s.
- 17:11And then Tuesday, it was sort of the week sort of took a turn.
- 17:17So my granny was, she was old and sort of getting sick.
- 17:20And she actually, she passed away early Tuesday morning.
- 17:24So that sort of derailed the whole week a bit.
- 17:29Like she would have all grown up.
- 17:31She would have like looked after us.
- 17:33She was Yeah, yeah, really, really close to the family.
- 17:36So that was super sad. But I still kept trying to get
- 17:41there on. And then like Tuesday evening, I
- 17:43don't 8 by 300 off 90 seconds and like getting these done, but
- 17:49just like your head's not really in it.
- 17:51And so and like the effort levels just way higher.
- 17:55And so that was the last sort of big session Wednesday morning
- 17:59and Wednesday morning and I just got out for a little jog
- 18:05Thursday morning. I just don't like few 4
- 18:08hundreds. And that was the day at the
- 18:09funeral. And then Friday, it was probably
- 18:12like the first, like decent night's sleep I got of the week.
- 18:17I just got out for like 30 minutes in the evening.
- 18:22Saturday morning was just 45 minutes in a few strides.
- 18:27And like, I got another good sleep Saturday, so I felt like I
- 18:30was coming around. And then Sunday, yeah, I got out
- 18:33for a little shakeout and it was race day.
- 18:36So on bleeding up they released the start lists and I was
- 18:41chucked in the B race with because my 3 KPV was from last
- 18:49June. It was 827 so it wasn't really
- 18:52good enough to get in the A race.
- 18:54But my coach, I don't know why, but Saturday evening I just
- 18:59checked the start list again and I was bumped up to the A race.
- 19:02So like I always said, I'd rather come last in the A race
- 19:06than then win the B race just to be on the starting line with
- 19:09them boys. I'm sort of where you want to
- 19:11be. So warm up done.
- 19:14My usual warm up felt like a tiny bit flat, but like on the
- 19:18day of a race, like you never really know.
- 19:20And then yeah, it probably went out like it actually went out on
- 19:25a walk like the first. I think we'd done an 82nd 400.
- 19:29Wow, So the first, the first K was three O 3 and I just sat at
- 19:34the back for like the likes. There was Andrew Koskren in this
- 19:37race, Olympian Ron, he's a three thirty 1500 guy.
- 19:41Nick Greg's he ran 732 and Puma Lee like unbelievable runner as
- 19:47well. And and I Mcelhenny, he'd the B
- 19:49standard. So he ran 736 in a race in
- 19:53America there previously. So he had to win that race to
- 19:55qualify. And yeah, no one wanted to take
- 20:00it out basically. So yeah.
- 20:03Did you, did you have a thought? Because I mean, I know you just
- 20:07want to be in the race, but then at the same time you're like
- 20:09hoping it'd be a bit more honest to drag you through to a PB,
- 20:12right? Did you ever thought, oh, do I,
- 20:15you know, do I go around and have a go here?
- 20:18Like it would have been better if it was more even for me.
- 20:21I don't know what it is like if you're looking on the outside,
- 20:24you're like, oh, it'd be easier to do like a really slow and
- 20:27then pick it up. But no, it just spikes and.
- 20:30Like these guys are 815, but these guys got serious wheels.
- 20:34Where's you like been training up to 10K sort of fitness, you
- 20:38know? Yeah.
- 20:40And but no, I asked my coach at the start, I was like, OK, if it
- 20:44is slow, do I take it out? And he's like, no, do not take
- 20:47it out. It would just be for disaster.
- 20:49Don't and they'll use you and abuse you and so from the start
- 20:54I just sat at the back like there's a video.
- 20:56It was all like videoed and so I'm just sitting at the back for
- 20:59the first like I'd say 65 laps and then I pick it up and I sort
- 21:03of split into two groups and I hang on to the back of the first
- 21:06group. So went through three O 3 to 2nd
- 21:09K was a 242 So and that's what I like ideally that's what you
- 21:15want to do any second swing yeah and.
- 21:20Like. I must have overtaken like 8
- 21:22people and on the indoor outdoor you probably get away with it
- 21:25indoor on the bank it's just you use so much energy overtaking.
- 21:30So do you think maybe it might have been closer to 240 even
- 21:33like the effort? Probably.
- 21:35Yeah. Well, clearly it was.
- 21:39And then like it started her well, I could start to feel the
- 21:43squeeze from like 5 laps out and I was like, it's going to be a
- 21:46painful one. And then six laps, sort of, I
- 21:49sort of like popped and I had still, I think the last K was a
- 21:52248, but that's really slow. And the other guys are running
- 21:57like 240. Yeah. 2:30 Yeah.
- 22:00But was it coming around the last band with like 100 go,
- 22:05there was a collision between Michael Haney and and Koskren
- 22:10and Koskren hit the deck and Michael Haney stumbled and then
- 22:14Nick Greggs just flew around them and Nick Greens ended up
- 22:18when in like a 214 or something. Get out to Philip Marin.
- 22:24Oh, sorry, sorry. A 14 Philip Marin.
- 22:26He came for it. I'd do better run away him and
- 22:30every now and again. Yeah, he don't really.
- 22:32Well, he was for it, but like such.
- 22:35So when it's seen cost green like quite far down the results.
- 22:40So I was like, what's going on there?
- 22:41So he literally fell, took a tumble twice, was able to get up
- 22:45and still be me. So did that collision cost
- 22:50Michael Haney his space and the world indoors?
- 22:53Like again, you never know, but Michael Haney was moving and it
- 22:57is very hard. Like that home straight is super
- 22:59short and so I'd like to think Michael Haney would have held on
- 23:05and but you never know. Like when you collide, like you
- 23:09totally lose all momentum. Like it is so hard to get back
- 23:12up and running again. So probably but yeah, but looks
- 23:17to think it's going to be Greg's and Kosgren who go to worlds.
- 23:23I was, I was disappointed when I just just the last 600, I just
- 23:27felt so dead. And like at the end of the day,
- 23:30like thinking about it today, like like an 833 being a bad
- 23:34race and the way it was run, like, like I have come a bit of
- 23:38a way in the last sort of like four months.
- 23:40So like I'm not injured, I'm not sick.
- 23:46Like to be on the start line with them boys.
- 23:48Like it's, I think it's where you want to be.
- 23:50Obviously I'd like to finish higher up, but like look at the
- 23:54bigger picture. I'm in a good place coming into
- 23:58into track season. We'll just take a little break
- 24:00now and then. Yeah, hit track season pretty
- 24:03hard. I won't race now to like May or
- 24:05something like that. So I have a big build out of me.
- 24:08Yeah, I feel like in terms of from a time perspective, like
- 24:12what if you're running 30 like a 30, whatever first K, like
- 24:17you've run 245 per K, like 815 pays for your next two KS, but
- 24:23you never, unfortunately you're never going to be able to make
- 24:25it up, right. So like you said, probably the
- 24:27only thing you can hope for is to be as competitive as you can
- 24:31for as long as you can. So and you put yourself in the
- 24:34race like not, you know, a lot of good things to come from come
- 24:39from that. Yeah, it's just like you beat
- 24:41yourself up thinking about like, like, like at the end I was like
- 24:4513 to 14 and like, I think there was like fucking 18 in the race.
- 24:48So like you're like, Oh yeah, I was fourth last, but like the
- 24:51standard. Pay from last year didn't even
- 24:53qualify you for the for the race.
- 24:54So that was your payday. So like you, you know, I know
- 24:59your fitness has picked up so much, but it's like, take that
- 25:02and then next year, you know, this time next year, hopefully
- 25:07in the mix. Unlike it was my first indoor,
- 25:10it was my first ever indoor 3K. Like my second ever 3K so.
- 25:14Like you have to ask what's it like because to the laps just
- 25:18apart from maybe they didn't towards the end, but do they
- 25:20take off so fast being? So fast.
- 25:23It's so fast. And yeah, you're just flying
- 25:26around those. So there was so many people
- 25:28there as well. Like it was stacked of so many
- 25:31cameras everywhere. And it was, it was pretty
- 25:33surreal. Like it's such a cool event to
- 25:34be part of. And it's just hopefully next
- 25:37year I'll be. A little higher up, does it make
- 25:40you want to do a bit more track stuff next year, this time next
- 25:44year, like you want to make it a focus?
- 25:47I like that more of that race stuff.
- 25:49Like I feel like anyone can time trial, but that race stuff is
- 25:51where it actually hurts and where it's really hard and
- 25:54tactical and that's like, it's fun if you get me.
- 26:00So that's where I really want to improve.
- 26:02But like, they really had to come like literally the only
- 26:05like racing, like every race now is nearly paced.
- 26:09And so, yeah, like national 5K at the end of July, that's like
- 26:14the next like a race, put it that way.
- 26:17I mean, don't underestimate all of the the mental struggles from
- 26:20the weeks it was as well. Like you've obviously carry that
- 26:23with you and you talked about your sleep just because it's a
- 26:26mental load and you can't like physically quantify it.
- 26:29You kind of like brush it off like, Oh well, whatever, I'm in
- 26:33good shape. But like when it's someone else
- 26:36looking at it, it's easier to see and you're like, yeah, you,
- 26:40you obviously had a lot of stuff going on going into it.
- 26:43So I mean, fair play for even coming on here in the 1st place,
- 26:46let alone speaking about it. So I think you've you've done
- 26:50had the great result. Yeah, no, like I hate using that
- 26:53as an excuse, but like it like it just wasn't my ideal build
- 26:58up. Like I'd normally be rolling out
- 27:00in the evenings and like going to bed early and that was just
- 27:03like sucked out like it was I wasn't doing it.
- 27:07So yeah, I didn't have the ideal lead up, but yeah, just happy to
- 27:12be there. Ideally I would have finished
- 27:14higher, but that's life, isn't it?
- 27:17Never. Things don't go straightforward
- 27:19and you just have to roll with the punches.
- 27:21Holiday mode now. Yeah, I'm.
- 27:24Yeah, I'm looking forward to getting away, even though it's
- 27:27only till Friday, but just totally like detox from running
- 27:30and like it does take up so much of your life.
- 27:34And even like like I can't imagine like poor dad, Michael
- 27:37Haney, Darren Michael Haney, like this is his job and for
- 27:40something like sort of out of his power to like then like mean
- 27:45he's not going to a world champs.
- 27:47Like I can't imagine like the pressure or like, like I'm, I'm
- 27:51thinking about my race here now. But like there is, is on like a
- 27:55much like deeper level if you get me at like higher, more
- 27:59things at stake, put it that way.
- 28:02But like, that's where I aim to be or where I'd like to be.
- 28:05So yeah, keep on dreaming, huh? Was he like angry at the end of
- 28:10the race or was he like, that is what it is?
- 28:13I I was sort of angry at my own race, so I literally just left.
- 28:18I didn't. I didn't wait around for the
- 28:20boys. Yeah.
- 28:21Any cooldown, No post race workout this week.
- 28:25Oh no, I didn't even like I won't be.
- 28:27I'll might run on Wednesday. I'll see.
- 28:29I think we're going to the Vatican on Wednesday or
- 28:31something like that. So I'll see you Wednesday
- 28:33evening or something. But like, I'm not under any
- 28:36pressure to do any running. I don't know, cool down with
- 28:38Philip Marin and we just don't like 3 K, 3 1/2 K.
- 28:42And but yeah, the running shoes are get an arrest for now.
- 28:47I'll actually might have to buy a new few pairs for the next
- 28:50build up. Go and do a loop of the Pope's
- 28:54gaff. There's a keyhole, I think you
- 28:57can look through that like you see like 3 different countries
- 29:00or something like that. Yeah, because if I can say is
- 29:03technically a country in itself, isn't.
- 29:07It but I was going trying to see a Roma game but they're playing
- 29:10on the Sunday are they? No, Aiden didn't want that
- 29:14either. So I don't think I was going to
- 29:16get to see, but might get wrong with Jersey with Evan Ferguson
- 29:19on the back. Shit Z play for them, does he?
- 29:23Yeah. He's on loan there, yeah.
- 29:24That's close. And Lazio don't play either.
- 29:28No, no. It's all like their lower
- 29:30leagues play midweek and then the big boys.
- 29:35You said there you might have to get a few new pairs of shoes.
- 29:38I was going to ask you actually. So this is a good time.
- 29:40And those on ones you used to wear, what were they?
- 29:44Cloud Monster Hyper. But they're good.
- 29:48I I sort of a love hate relationship with them, but I
- 29:53think it was just in my head, like I think they are a good
- 29:55shoe and it's sort of like a long run shoe again.
- 29:59So or you could pick up the pace in it because it's got like
- 30:02Peeba foam in the front of it. So it's nice and springy.
- 30:06It's just sometimes like stones got like stuck in the holes and
- 30:10that was the only like downside to them for they're the only on
- 30:15shoes I've actually ever had. I was trying to get the the like
- 30:18the speed ones, I think they're like green and orange.
- 30:21There's green and orange through them.
- 30:22They're predominantly white, but I could never get my hands on
- 30:26them Ones. I think they're called like on
- 30:29cloud Boom or something or on Cloud Zone, one of them things.
- 30:33But are you thinking? Yeah, I don't think they've
- 30:35released the second version of them yet, Yeah.
- 30:37Because there's a there's a run club with on and the run center
- 30:42this week come in and I think they're bringing the new Cloud
- 30:46Monster Hyper 3 and just the Clay Monster 3.
- 30:49It'd be the clay. Monster three, Yeah.
- 30:51Yeah. The clay monster I heard the
- 30:54clay monster just original was very good.
- 30:57Clay monster 2 wasn't as good so it'll be interesting to see if
- 31:00the clay monster 3 is is better. The new Super Blast was released
- 31:04today in Ireland. Would you be interested in them?
- 31:08Yeah, but I'm not interested in paying the money for them.
- 31:12The the colorway is nice so I reckon.
- 31:14Yeah, like I love that and like Romero plus I probably just use
- 31:19that for my my long runs. And like I've got them IDs Evo
- 31:24SLS for pickups. I've got Puma velocity, I think
- 31:30they're velocity ones, just a normal daily trainer for
- 31:33pickups. Like I've got like a few pairs
- 31:35of shoes for pickups. I don't really need the the a
- 31:39super blast, but even to see Tim Vincent talking about them like
- 31:41they're nearly too good, you nearly want your legs to be
- 31:44banged up a little. That was a pretty glowing
- 31:47recommendation for a shoe, wasn't that?
- 31:49Yeah, Yeah. Well, imagine having the choice
- 31:51of like super vast or like the Mega Blast or like all of them.
- 31:57Like it's the choice of being an athlete.
- 32:00Yeah, it's a. Pretty good range of shoes,
- 32:02right? If you could, yeah.
- 32:04I don't know who I'd pick if I had to pick a brand to get
- 32:06sponsored by. So if he's so hard at the
- 32:08moment, because everyone is such good shoes.
- 32:11Few good ranges, yeah. Right, then we'll get cracking
- 32:15with the results. So Hobart Track Classic was the
- 32:19closest to me geographically. So this happened in the state of
- 32:25Tasmania for those who are not familiar with Hobart or
- 32:28Australia, and it was the 3000 meter national championships
- 32:33took place. But firstly there was a men's
- 32:351500 meters which is won by Peyton Craig in a modest time of
- 32:4035457 from Luke Shaw 355 and from running athlete Tom
- 32:46Moorcroft in 353-4538. He was third.
- 32:51I don't know if you caught any of this race.
- 32:54I did, yeah. Yeah, It was really good.
- 32:58Like so Luke and Tom are both products of WA.
- 33:06Luke's recently moved over to the East Coast and so has Tom
- 33:11very recently. And so yeah, Tom was a as a
- 33:15training partner of ours for a long time.
- 33:17So it was really I've seen him put himself in the position in
- 33:23these sorts of races before and not have the the legs still
- 33:27under him with like 200 meters to go.
- 33:28And you could see him a little bit unsure.
- 33:32It felt like at least watching it as to whether or not he
- 33:35should make a move. He was probably 5th or 6th at
- 33:38the bell. And Peyton Craig was was the
- 33:42main athlete. So he's like an on Oceania
- 33:46athlete and what an 800 meter guy ordinarily.
- 33:52But yeah, I thought Tom Renner, a really sensible race, moved up
- 33:57alongside and was the only one really matching Peyton in the
- 34:02last 150 meters, tied up maybe only slightly or Luke closed
- 34:07quite well. Peyton didn't look like he was
- 34:10too troubled. But for Tom to be like one of
- 34:13our training partners, to be on a podium in one of those races
- 34:15was was pretty cool to watch, I thought.
- 34:19Yeah, he seems to be progressing nicely, doesn't he?
- 34:21Past year or so, 18 months, yeah.
- 34:24It's such a shame for that last, like 20 meters or something.
- 34:29I was going like, God, Tom go, he's coming.
- 34:31And he just didn't know he was there, did he?
- 34:33And then by the time he didn't know he was there, like he was
- 34:36just fully lactic, too late to do anything about it.
- 34:39Yeah, and I think, like, I think it's just, it's good.
- 34:43I like it. So he went to Europe last year
- 34:47over the European summer and just made these really small but
- 34:54incremental improvements throughout that time.
- 34:58And he's sort of been building, he's never made over the past
- 35:02few years, wholesale improvements, but he's just
- 35:04adding all these things like adding in some good aerobic bass
- 35:08to couple with his 800 meter speed.
- 35:11And it's just nice to see it translate.
- 35:15So yeah, now he's running, running well.
- 35:18And I think, yeah, it's made a bit of a leap to go over to
- 35:21Melbourne as well, over to be closer to Greeny.
- 35:24And yeah, hopefully we keep seeing more of him in these
- 35:28sorts of races. And just quick shout out to the
- 35:31guy in 5th as well, Riley Bryce. He was a former training partner
- 35:34of mine when I lived in Melbourne.
- 35:37Ends with the Hippo Athletic Club over there which Liam
- 35:43Stocky avid listeners also a part of.
- 35:46Good performance from Riley to 346 women's 800 meters.
- 35:51This one was won very impressively by Jayla Hancock.
- 35:54Cameron in two O 2.22 from Ivy Boothroyd 2O3 and Tess Kersop
- 35:59Cole also 2O3. This one was interesting because
- 36:05I noticed the pacemaker step off at like, I think it was around
- 36:08300 meters because given the race is only 800 meters, I mean,
- 36:13kind of what's the point in having a pacemaker for 300
- 36:16meters? You at least want the first lap,
- 36:18don't you? But then Jayla, to be fair to
- 36:22her, like she was so strong, she was on the front as soon as the
- 36:24pacemaker went and she just pumped her arms for the
- 36:28remaining 500 meters. And she comes more so from more
- 36:32of that aerobic background like 1500 meters traditionally.
- 36:35So this would have been a bit of a change in stimulus and to come
- 36:39away with the win and get close to two minutes I think is a
- 36:44great run there from the front. The house Nazomi Tanaka, she
- 36:50finished fifth, but you see she also featured in the 3K later
- 36:55on. Very impressive.
- 36:58I thought it was funny enough seeing her in this 800 meters,
- 37:02let alone the fact that she then went and runs another race later
- 37:05on when I was looking at her. She's the 3K and the 5K national
- 37:10record holder in Japan as well. So I mean, she's, no, she's not
- 37:14messing around, but 800 meters is a bit of a different ball
- 37:17game, isn't it? Yeah, it would have felt very
- 37:20fast. She must be on the tour of
- 37:23Australia for the summer given she was in.
- 37:26She was at the Perth Track Classic as well.
- 37:28Getting to all the regional states, it's good.
- 37:32Bit of travelling, not bad. The athlete lifestyle sometimes
- 37:36if you've got the right agent. Then was the 3000 meters, the
- 37:40national championships, the men's race, Geez, when I was
- 37:45looking at the start line, I've never seen a track so busy.
- 37:48I don't think there was a counted on the results of 28
- 37:52people on the start line. And that was, you know, the way
- 37:55they start the race off like with the inner group and outer
- 37:59group. And they were just like jam
- 38:01packed, took up the whole track and you're thinking this is this
- 38:05could be messy like elbows clippings and stuff.
- 38:09But thankfully it went out at a pretty honest pace, which meant
- 38:13that like kind of they strung out, didn't they?
- 38:17Anyway, I'll do the results. You can talk about what you saw.
- 38:19Carl Davis won in 748.21. Brett Robinson was second 749 O
- 38:249 and Adam Goddard 3rd 74968. Yeah, and in terms of
- 38:30observations than the race, I mean, I don't know about you,
- 38:32but who were you? I was cheering for Brett.
- 38:35So I was, I was sort of rooting for him, particularly after he
- 38:39ran, well, 5K recently. And it's just cool to see a guy
- 38:42who's, you know, turned to the roads and the marathons cut
- 38:47cutting down to these shorter track races.
- 38:49And yeah, I mean, it was a it was an interesting race.
- 38:53Like you said, the pace was pretty honest.
- 38:55And the the top three what cleared away late.
- 39:01I think Callum Davies has has won this race before.
- 39:04I think Oh no, sorry, he's got two other the commentators are
- 39:08doing a good job of covering it. I thought so it was all streamed
- 39:12on on 7 Channel 7. Wasn't one of our like free to
- 39:16air network and they were doing and is that Bruce Mccavaney?
- 39:20And was was part of the commentary team.
- 39:25And I thought they I thought they covered the race well, gave
- 39:28good insights. But they're talking about that.
- 39:29He's won a couple of national titles.
- 39:32And yeah, he just had, he's weird.
- 39:34He just had too much in terms of his change of pace in the
- 39:37wheels, which you probably expect, expect of him.
- 39:39Like he does have a good turn of turn of speed, albeit that he
- 39:43still had the legs when they get off a fairly solid pace.
- 39:48So yeah, he was just too good. Brett, Brett second, which was
- 39:51good. And yeah, managed to hold off
- 39:52Adam Goddard, who was finishing, finishing fast, but they sort of
- 39:56made a bit of a break on him down the back straight.
- 39:59Yeah, it's no surprise really with the Carl Davis once, if you
- 40:03think back to that 5K which Brett Run won the week prior,
- 40:08Carl Davis was the one in 3rd trying to like close the gap,
- 40:11but the 5K distance just being like a little bit too dragged
- 40:15out for him. He couldn't quite use his.
- 40:17Is speed whereas this is probably just perfect, isn't it
- 40:20it's I thought about Brett as well when I was watching it
- 40:24because the the field was so dense like 28 of them but it
- 40:29wasn't just 28 random people if you actually look at the results
- 40:32in the start list they're all like right up there towards like
- 40:36the top of national level for Australia.
- 40:39So as good as it is to see Brett doing this, it actually comes
- 40:44with a shit load of risk as well.
- 40:46Because yes, the obvious upside is OK, go down the distances and
- 40:50like forget about running marathons and half marathons and
- 40:54go and have some fun on the track and get your confidence
- 40:57back. But then what happens if you
- 40:58start getting beat by like a load of 18/19/20 year olds?
- 41:02That'll completely go the other way.
- 41:04So the fact that he's putting it on the line and then the fact
- 41:08that's paying off for him is is very.
- 41:10Good. Yeah, I can only assume he's
- 41:13obviously training well and then backing, backing that training
- 41:16in right. And you, you you would expect
- 41:21like is he, I remember he was like in a national in the world,
- 41:26you know, 3000 media, you know, the world indoor 3K.
- 41:28I'm pretty sure he's represented Australia in that in the past.
- 41:31So his background is in a lot of these shorter races.
- 41:36And then as he would have stepped up in distances, he
- 41:38would have had that ceiling to complement his, the aerobic base
- 41:42tears developing. So yeah, I think as as hard as
- 41:47it might be for the ego, it's probably good for him from a
- 41:49Physiology perspective if his body can handle it, to do some
- 41:52quicker stuff and set him up hopefully.
- 41:58The other thing I was thinking is Carl Davis winning this
- 42:01national title, what does that do for him in terms of a
- 42:04potential qualifier for the world indoors coming up?
- 42:08So there's like a, a road to the place where it's called is like
- 42:12random like Pole wish or some it's in Poland anyway.
- 42:16And they've published a road to, you know, the way on World
- 42:19Athletics. They produce the list.
- 42:21So you can kind of see how everyone's tracking.
- 42:24So he's Carl Davis is actually listed as the 4th Australian
- 42:28representative over there on there and he hasn't run the auto
- 42:33standard. I think that was 733.
- 42:36So maybe if he'd have ran the auto standard and then had the
- 42:39national title, that would have got him in there.
- 42:42But he sits forth behind Cam Myers, who it depends whether
- 42:48he'll double because there's 1500 as well.
- 42:52Kye Robinson, he's definitely going to be doing the 3K.
- 42:55And then a guy called Thomas Palfrey.
- 42:58He much must be one of these collegiate kids over in the US.
- 43:02So I guess just watch this space potentially not because Kai's
- 43:08there's only two spaces, Kai's definitely going to take one,
- 43:11and then I don't know why Thomas Palfrey wouldn't take the other,
- 43:15but Carl Davis is next in line I guess.
- 43:18Also worth mentioning, Max Shervington from WA was in this
- 43:21race finished in eight minutes dead which was a PB but so close
- 43:25to breaking the infamous barrier.
- 43:28Women's version of this race was won emphatically by Claudia
- 43:31Hollingsworth 83742 from Abby Caldwell in 2nd 83906 and
- 43:38Georgia Griffith in 3rd 840.71. What are your thoughts on that?
- 43:44Yeah, I don't know. I thought it was like race of
- 43:46the night in terms of who it attracted and the head to head
- 43:49to head to head like yeah, I feel like you could mount a case
- 43:56for any of the top four to win like so Rose Davies is she won
- 44:04Zeta Peck multiple times. Like is she the Australian
- 44:07record holder for the 5K? Georgia Griffith is the just got
- 44:12I think promoted, which we'll touch on with doping news to a
- 44:15World championship 3000 meter bronze I think, and is the
- 44:21Australian record holder over the three KS run by 824 I think.
- 44:25And then Abby Caldwell's like what like one of the best 800
- 44:30meter runners currently and so is cloudier.
- 44:35So like all four of them, you can argue a case for why you
- 44:42think they might win. And it's always tricky because
- 44:44they often are coming off like a Falls Creek type stint and
- 44:47you're wondering who's been who's got really fit over
- 44:49summer. We're doing sessions side by
- 44:52side. Yeah, so, so they might have a
- 44:55bit of a better idea than than us.
- 44:58But yeah, I just thought it was an exciting race and I guess
- 45:02played out as you might expect it because you sort of almost
- 45:05mentioning about these paced races, like it's harder, like
- 45:09Rose is probably wants it to be strung out and on on their rivet
- 45:13the whole time because she doesn't have the closing speed
- 45:16of Claudia and Abby. But she did that.
- 45:20So she went to the front with two laps to go and did a heap of
- 45:23work, but it just wasn't enough to gap them.
- 45:28And then, I don't know, did you hear Claudia talking post race
- 45:31about part of what she was hoping to do was sort of take
- 45:36some more initiative, be a bit more assertive?
- 45:39So often you just see her explode in that last 100 meters
- 45:42where she took the lead on the back straight, made a move then
- 45:46and sort of caught Abby by a little, it seems maybe a little
- 45:51bit by surprise or at least stole a gap and then managed to
- 45:55to hold her out. So the race was one a little bit
- 45:59different to as it sometimes is, but it was still very exciting.
- 46:03I still really enjoyed the race I thought was really good.
- 46:05No, maybe it's because she typically races 800 meters as
- 46:09well, but shades of Keely when she's running down the home
- 46:13straight there with a comfortable gap to the second
- 46:16person. She looks, she doesn't have this
- 46:19huge light. She doesn't explode off the
- 46:21ground. Like she stays pretty close to
- 46:23the ground, right? It's a bit of a different
- 46:24running action, but I mean, so she doesn't look like she's
- 46:28flying, but I mean, in comparison, she obviously is.
- 46:31It looks, yeah. She looks very smooth and
- 46:35effortless, doesn't she? Yeah, because even the
- 46:38commentators, I can't, I don't know if you noticed when she was
- 46:42making that move, like around that being stuff, they didn't
- 46:45pick up on it until there was a gap, but you you could see that
- 46:50she was making the move. So like her form isn't so
- 46:52obvious that she's really changed a bit like Camp Myers,
- 46:55the way they just wind it all and then all of a sudden there
- 46:58was 5 meters there and you're like, oh shit, she's gone.
- 47:01But yeah. Granny must be happy, which is
- 47:03pretty cool. May all those athletes are
- 47:06flying, aren't they? Yeah.
- 47:08He said as one of the side chats with him that she's very
- 47:12studious. I just take takes everything in
- 47:15and very professional so very cool.
- 47:20Yeah, leading up to a big year, hopefully big things to come.
- 47:23Tokyo Marathon, first major of the year.
- 47:28Think the weather was pretty good in comparison to last year.
- 47:31Last year, potentially it was a bit warm, around 20° or
- 47:34something. We went through the field last
- 47:37week and realized it was given. Boston and London are not in the
- 47:44too distant future. Therefore anyone in the Tokyo
- 47:47field or in the London and Boston field would wouldn't have
- 47:51been in Tokyo field. You look at the start list and
- 47:53you're like, where are all these people coming from?
- 47:55Like every start list is just like rammed on the results. 30
- 48:02men broke to two. I was 10, which is crazy depth.
- 48:08The guy who won it was Tedessei Tekili from Ethiopia in two O
- 48:123.37 and it was actually a very blanket finish between three of
- 48:17them. Jeffrey tore Rich from Kenya two
- 48:21O 337, he got given also and Alexander Mutisao or Munyao from
- 48:26Kenya also two O 338. So one second separate in the
- 48:31top three. We'll go to the women's in a
- 48:34SEC, but we'll unpack the men's race first.
- 48:38So there's the the podium getters.
- 48:40Anything else you wanted to touch on from the race?
- 48:42I I mean, like, yeah, that fields the people that we're not
- 48:48mentioning like that Daniel Mateco, Mukta address who's been
- 48:52around the track for a long time.
- 48:54Same with Solomon Borrega, what's the Olympic champion runs
- 48:58for leaning bit of leaning coverage because leaning is also
- 49:03who it looks like Suguru Osaka is now sponsored by.
- 49:08I saw them cover that say he was the first Japanese runner in
- 49:10205. And then yeah, Cam Levens, our
- 49:14man in in 14th in two 0649. I didn't hear him after the race
- 49:21say he was relatively pleased with that.
- 49:23He said his training had been a bit so so so he wasn't expecting
- 49:29to shoot the lights out. So to to walk away with the 206
- 49:32he was relatively happy with. I mean, he's he's pretty cool.
- 49:36He's a bit like fine wine, isn't he?
- 49:37Like he's sort of had a you know, he's been able to to what
- 49:42to have a second crack at it. He at that time in the early
- 49:46twenty 10s where he was on top of the world or close to.
- 49:49And then he's yeah, he's, you know, running these great times
- 49:52again, which was cool. I don't know.
- 49:55Did you tune into Jake or rented Japan's pre race YouTube vid?
- 50:04But he between that and the conversation you had with him
- 50:09Ryan, he gave some cool insights into the pace groups.
- 50:13Just talking about how crazy it is with some of these Japanese
- 50:16races like the pace groups of between 2O something like
- 50:21between 2O2 or two O 3 and two O 6.
- 50:23Essentially the men's pace groups and then the women's pace
- 50:27group, who will, yeah, talk to shortly, was I think maybe pace
- 50:30216. And so his comment just about
- 50:34what he wanted to do with his race was he's like, oh, either
- 50:38wanna run a PB or I, I wanna wanna walk off the track and
- 50:42just get a card hit out and build for, for London, because
- 50:46he said he wanted the easy double podcast to be London
- 50:50calling podcast to be front and centre.
- 50:52But no, he did say like it. It's quite it's interesting you
- 50:55see all these times. And I do remember looking at the
- 50:58Asaka marathon in the past, which I've done a couple of
- 51:00times. If you look at just the Finnish
- 51:04times, you think, oh, that's got a nice smattering of people at
- 51:08different at different times. But then when you look, when you
- 51:12look at when you can click through into their 5K splits,
- 51:14you realize they all just went out at 2 or 6 pace and faded.
- 51:18And it's a bit like this race as well.
- 51:20So yeah, incredible depth in these in these races, but
- 51:25they're actually just there's so many Japanese blokes just
- 51:28swinging for the fences. Like the fellow who did, I can't
- 51:33ratio someone he end up running to 11, but through he got
- 51:39through halfway he was on 203 pace.
- 51:41Through halfway, he was 50 meters, 100 meters off the front
- 51:44of the canyons. Yeah, yeah.
- 51:47Tin tin dime. Wild animals, aren't they?
- 51:50Yeah, it's pretty cool and even like, and I think I heard Jake
- 51:54talking about this as well. Was like that, surely.
- 51:58Let's see, I've forgotten his first name.
- 52:00I should. Ethan.
- 52:01Ethan, like you know, had a 2/22/18 PV next to his name and
- 52:07in his last two races he's literally just in the lead pack
- 52:11just throwing down just like any of the others.
- 52:13It's so good to watch. I think like the mentality is
- 52:18like if you try it that many times on one day, you'll pull it
- 52:21off. But what The thing is, what
- 52:23happens if you don't? And then you've you've trained
- 52:26for a lifetime and you have nothing to show for it, and
- 52:29probably nothing even close to what you're capable of if you
- 52:32went measured. It's a bit like punting on a
- 52:35specky stock. You just have to keep reloading
- 52:37the barrel until you find your retirement fund.
- 52:40But yeah, a lot of people don't have the courage.
- 52:43But power to him. A couple more thing points on
- 52:47this men's field to the guy who won.
- 52:49That was back-to-back Champions championships for him.
- 52:52He won last year in a slightly quicker time. 203 again, then he
- 52:58DNF the World Championships in Tokyo, so his last three
- 53:01marathons have all been in Tokyo, which is quite bizarre.
- 53:05The Italian bloke, Ilias Iwani, I recognised him from Tokyo.
- 53:11I think if you think back to the way it was like building up and
- 53:14there was 678 of them and then they were dropping, dropping,
- 53:16dropping. Him and the Israeli athletes
- 53:19like they were all the guys that just they were the last to fall
- 53:22away before the final Sprint between is it symbol and the
- 53:26German German dude. Yeah, so his when I seen his
- 53:31photo during the rounds, because he broke his own Italian record
- 53:37for 2/04/26, he was familiar and I realised it was because of
- 53:41that, putting seventh fastest European ever.
- 53:45And then, yeah, acknowledging there's a couple of DNFS in
- 53:48there, including our mate Jake. He went through halfway in 6518
- 53:55and I think he stepped off around 30 K.
- 53:59We'll we'll get into him about that on the next recording of
- 54:02London calling. Don't want to be too harsh, but
- 54:07I don't know. I'm not sure like what what he
- 54:10gains from it. I know he's now he's got a lot
- 54:14more confidence because this two weeks of like minimal volume,
- 54:20his like mentality was in the dumps because he's thinking like
- 54:25my body's broken down. I don't know what I can do.
- 54:28Like all this training has gone to waste type thing.
- 54:31But that's kind of like the what's the word I'm looking for
- 54:37when you make something seem worse than what it is.
- 54:41Is that you're right or amplify? Yeah, but it's like, just
- 54:44because you're in the moment, everything feels so bad.
- 54:47But I mean, I guess he had the entry, So what was he?
- 54:50Gonna do I sort of I can understand it like so he he runs
- 54:56and and again, it's a sort of. Catastrophizing.
- 54:59Sorry. Catastrophize yeah, that's it.
- 55:01No, like, and I think you've covered it pretty well in his
- 55:04pre race stream was that like he doesn't think that a lot a heavy
- 55:13a big taker into a race is the best thing for him.
- 55:16And he's also shooting for something that's maybe a bit of
- 55:19a stretch target anyway. But there is a real chance when
- 55:23you run that exceptionally high mileage and you have this very
- 55:26large taper, there is a chance that maybe it all comes comes
- 55:30together for him and it and it happened to be the completely
- 55:33right mix of ingredients. And so, and it's a bit like
- 55:37we're talking about before with some of these guys trying to,
- 55:40you know, this is the same with Ethan turning 218 into 210.
- 55:46Like you're not going to know unless you put it on the line.
- 55:50And he is pretty exceptionally resilient to a high training
- 55:53load. Like if that was me, I'd be too
- 55:57much stress on my body and I wouldn't be able to recover and
- 56:00rah, rah, rah. So I'd probably juice, probably
- 56:03wouldn't be worth the squeeze. Whereas he can back it up like a
- 56:05few people can and thought he was a chance.
- 56:08So I don't know, it made enough sense in my mind anyway.
- 56:12I can sympathize like from my own point of view that the when
- 56:16you are racing, it's like PB or nothing and maybe someone will
- 56:19try and tell you like, hey, maybe why don't you try this
- 56:22today And you're like, no, well, why would they try and run
- 56:24something that's slower than what I've run before?
- 56:28And also he's got like like he mentions like his races every
- 56:32other week in Japan where he can do it as a workout.
- 56:34This one's this one's the big one.
- 56:37You want to swing for the try and land on the moon.
- 56:40Why not? So the London Marathon, the PB
- 56:44is loading pressure's on now. No, but he did the Valencia
- 56:54didn't didn't go to plant. I'm building I'm.
- 57:00I'm cheering for him. I'm cheering for him as well.
- 57:04Just letting him know that it it's funny because in I don't
- 57:08know if you've seen his post race live stream, the army are
- 57:13in there like just firing them up like telling them.
- 57:16They're the best. There's no better support base
- 57:19going around. Loyal, loyal supporters, to be
- 57:23fair. Good on them.
- 57:24They'll be after you after they hear some of these times, that's
- 57:27for sure. You know, it's better
- 57:30constructive criticism often, you know, can can help pressure
- 57:35when it's mainly me. Yeah.
- 57:38Yeah. So Jake, let me know what you
- 57:39think about my cycling. Also Alex Harvey, Australian
- 57:45representative, went over there, I think hoping for well, looking
- 57:49at splits, in fact, hoping for something big.
- 57:51He went through 10K on pace for two O 9 and also stepped off
- 57:57around the similar mark to Jake, I think maybe 28 K Actually his
- 58:01his Strava caption makes for interest in reading.
- 58:04And then if you've seen it, I'm going to quickly pull it up now.
- 58:08It sounds like there was a bit of chaos going on off the course
- 58:13or with the runners who were stepping off.
- 58:17So he's written so I think as he ran 215 before or something
- 58:23Alex, and maybe he was certainly trying to get closer to 210.
- 58:27Anyway, was moving well, really well.
- 58:29Went out probably too hard, but my legs felt heavy really early.
- 58:32Ended up with some gnarly foot pain.
- 58:34Then the chaos began. Me, Sarah Hall and three African
- 58:38runners, presumably Sarah Hall and these Africans DNF D as
- 58:41well. Spent the next four to five
- 58:43hours trying to get to the finish line, getting dropped at
- 58:46the wrong spot, walking around for hours whilst no one could
- 58:49help us with no access to a phone.
- 58:52In hindsight I would have been better off walking to the
- 58:55finish. Probably will never DNF for a
- 58:57race again after that. It's part that you don't,
- 59:01probably. I can't say I've ever
- 59:04contemplated stepping off for one, but then also never really
- 59:07thought through the consequence. When you do what?
- 59:10What's next? It's funny.
- 59:12Only this morning. What?
- 59:14What were you calling it? The sad bus.
- 59:16Yeah, the sad wagon with the like BY Marathon there savage
- 59:23that race. Yeah.
- 59:25So that was a men's only Invitational race and you had to
- 59:29run a 2 1/2 hour qualifying, maybe 2 and 2 1/2 hour
- 59:33qualifying standard to enter. And at 70 at which at halfway if
- 59:37you didn't meet the cut off which was 75 minutes, which is
- 59:40exactly half of two hours 30, they would pull you off course
- 59:44and put you on the bus. And we saw that happen during
- 59:48the race and it was quite the quite the sights like a virtual
- 59:52pace light just coming to RIP you off if you weren't on pace
- 59:55so. Sweeper.
- 59:56Yeah, Sweeper, I'd love to say races like that.
- 1:00:00I like the idea. I'd like, I'd love to say
- 1:00:05something which ramped up a little bit like the remember
- 1:00:08Jake did that the Wings for Life challenge, which progressively
- 1:00:12gets quicker. So some sort of race that ended
- 1:00:14maybe sooner than that or I don't know, some sort of race
- 1:00:17with that sort of concept I'd tune into.
- 1:00:21Bit of a different initiative than like I was saying than just
- 1:00:23running fast. It's fun to race from when
- 1:00:27there's other pressures on the line.
- 1:00:29The women's race was won by Bridget Cosguy 21429 who can
- 1:00:36Weld a second 21636 and how we face a third in two 1739 So that
- 1:00:42was Kenya, Ethiopia, Ethiopia and then the the rest of the
- 1:00:46results actually read Ethiopia, Ethiopia, Kenya, Ethiopia,
- 1:00:50Ethiopia, Kenya. So complete dominance there.
- 1:00:54Cosguy CV Well now she's added that win to it reads 2 Chicago
- 1:01:00titles, 2 London titles and two Tokyo titles and she was second
- 1:01:06in Sydney and Hamburg last year. So that makes it her first win
- 1:01:11of a major since this race in 2022 and she tried four times in
- 1:01:16between. So bit of AI, don't know if you
- 1:01:20can say comeback story, but certainly rising to the top
- 1:01:24again. Yeah, I think that was my pick.
- 1:01:27Yeah, it was, to be fair. Off the back of winning in Was
- 1:01:31it Beijing, the Beijing Marathon and two.
- 1:01:33Shanghai. Shanghai.
- 1:01:34That's it. Yeah, good show.
- 1:01:39And look, she's won by a comfy margin over 2 minutes.
- 1:01:43Yeah. Shinned in.
- 1:01:46Aid diver, former Australian record holder before Jess
- 1:01:50Stenson went one better in Valencia last year.
- 1:01:53She was also in the field Ting in 19th just breaking two hours
- 1:01:58322957. I think I've seen the caption on
- 1:02:02one of her socials is like kind of a bit disappointed in and
- 1:02:07suggested there was more there than that, but it wasn't to be
- 1:02:10on the day. So I mean, she sounds hopeful
- 1:02:14that like she's willing to go again and stuff and that that
- 1:02:18isn't a true reflection of her shape.
- 1:02:19So hopefully that's the start of a big comeback potentially.
- 1:02:25Have you raced against Sinead before?
- 1:02:27When I did the Sydney Marathon in 2023, she was first Aussie
- 1:02:34over the line. Yeah, stinking hot that day.
- 1:02:39Is this her first marathon in like this?
- 1:02:42Bit of a comeback. She raced a hot.
- 1:02:44What was the half she'd done? She's done 1/2 a couple of weeks
- 1:02:47ago, didn't she? Yeah.
- 1:02:50But yeah, good to see she's still got the motivation to get
- 1:02:52in in the mix with marathons. Yeah, and I know she doesn't
- 1:02:56like anyone to mention her age, but I think it was the fastest
- 1:02:59ever by a woman her age. Fair play.
- 1:03:03Yeah. So, you know, even even if it's
- 1:03:06not the day one, it's a day. No lady, as if it's done.
- 1:03:11Pretty cool. Now we've got some controversy
- 1:03:14over in the USA, people may presumably have seen on social
- 1:03:17media this doing the rounds so that they had their half
- 1:03:21marathon championships, which was acting as a qualifier for
- 1:03:25the road running championships later in the year.
- 1:03:28So as we know with the US, they're quite brutal and it's
- 1:03:31first across the line. So that would have been
- 1:03:35fantastic for Jess McLean, Emma Hurley and Edna Kergath had they
- 1:03:39have gone the right way and finished in the order that they
- 1:03:42were with about 1 to 2 miles of the race left.
- 1:03:46However, the first three women across the line, as it were, was
- 1:03:51Molly Born, Carrie Elwood and Annie Rodenfell's.
- 1:03:57So I don't know if you have much thought to offer on this.
- 1:03:59Have you seen it? Have you read about it?
- 1:04:02Yeah, his name escapes me. Is it David Roche?
- 1:04:08What's the who's the Have I got that right?
- 1:04:12That name, right? I mean, it rings a bell.
- 1:04:16He's a like he's done some good things on the trails and I think
- 1:04:21he broke like an American market course record that was client is
- 1:04:29thought to be untouchable for some 100 mile race and thinking
- 1:04:32him and his wife hosted podcast seemed very upbeat sort of a
- 1:04:35fella. But he he I've seen a few posts
- 1:04:40from him on it and I and hopefully there's more posts
- 1:04:43like which effectively is saying like, let's hope USA track and
- 1:04:48field come to their senses. Like these athletes through no
- 1:04:51fault of their own, were run of course and were in line to win
- 1:04:55the race and win. So I think we'll see like
- 1:04:58$20,000 of prize money at stake as well.
- 1:05:02Credit to US track and field in terms of they always stump up
- 1:05:05decent amounts of cash for all their national races and they
- 1:05:08make them these qualifying races for these road running champs or
- 1:05:13whatever it is world champs. Like I think their methods are
- 1:05:15great. And I just think unfortunately,
- 1:05:18their initial reaction, which is just to apply the rules lacks
- 1:05:23broader sense. Like rule, rules are rules.
- 1:05:28And like my jobs in tax. And it's all about reading rules
- 1:05:32and, you know, applying them, staying within them, but staying
- 1:05:38within them. But they but you would hope that
- 1:05:42common sense would prevail, which is.
- 1:05:45But this is a very unique circumstance.
- 1:05:47And it reminded me, reminded me of a race back in 2018.
- 1:05:52I did the Sunshine Coast half and Jack Rayner was winning it
- 1:05:57and the course went, and I'm only going to be able to explain
- 1:06:01it to you, right, but imagine there's like a rectangle and he
- 1:06:04went early on the rectangle directly.
- 1:06:07He followed the pace car and they went that way along the
- 1:06:10rectangle, whereas the course was to go the other two sides of
- 1:06:14the rectangle. So they've basically he's run
- 1:06:16the exact same distance, but he's been directed down a
- 1:06:19street, down a different 2 roads.
- 1:06:22And he went on to win that race by over a minute, absolutely
- 1:06:25shit in and was denied the Australian championship.
- 1:06:29And there's quite a bit of money.
- 1:06:31They they're, they're very good this event in putting on a
- 1:06:33decent amount of prize money. And I actually bumped into his
- 1:06:37mum. I think I was getting a coffee.
- 1:06:38And she was a bit gutted because she's like, this is his source
- 1:06:41of employment. Like this is before he'd sort of
- 1:06:46gone on to do a lot of things as well.
- 1:06:49And she's like, yeah, she you know, she was a bit upset now.
- 1:06:52And then credit to the race. I ended up honouring the they're
- 1:06:56they're like, we will award the prize money to both of you.
- 1:07:00And so as they found a practical solution, they were still
- 1:07:03hamstrung and I think Athletics Australia was still had their
- 1:07:06knickers in a twister about, you know, what they could do in
- 1:07:09terms of, you know, there's officials and awarding people
- 1:07:11like they didn't they couldn't find a way around it.
- 1:07:13And I get that to a degree, like you've got these these rules,
- 1:07:17but you would hope in exceptional circumstances that
- 1:07:21one, they could find some extra prize money at a minimum, so you
- 1:07:24can reward both athletes from a financial perspective.
- 1:07:27And then common sense would prevail around selection that
- 1:07:30you would allow for some form of exceptional discretion and, and
- 1:07:36give the people that should have like, I don't think it was
- 1:07:38close, right? It wasn't like there was a whole
- 1:07:40bunch and these were the ones that went off like these.
- 1:07:43These ladies would have otherwise shooted in nothing.
- 1:07:46Yeah, they, I think they had like a minute gap or something
- 1:07:49at the time and how it actually happened.
- 1:07:52It was like the, I think it might have been like a moped or
- 1:07:54something. You know, they have the camera,
- 1:07:56they have the guy facing backwards on the back of it.
- 1:07:58They're filming like the the front of the race and they're
- 1:08:02meant to just stay straight down this road and this motorbike or
- 1:08:06car has just turned off the road left.
- 1:08:09And then you see the women follow as you would like
- 1:08:1312/11/12 miles into a half, my opinion anyway, into a half
- 1:08:16marathon. Yes, there is the consensus that
- 1:08:19like you should know the course and stuff.
- 1:08:21However, at that point when there's a lead vehicle directing
- 1:08:26you, it's kind of like I'm thinking it's out of my hands,
- 1:08:29it's not my responsibility. I'm just following this.
- 1:08:32At that point in the race, you're absolutely in the hair
- 1:08:34locker. You haven't got much capacity
- 1:08:36for thought other than how much longer can I last?
- 1:08:41So you're just following wherever this lead vehicle goes
- 1:08:45and then they run down this road for you can see on this Strava
- 1:08:48map, it's a considerable way. And then because the camera
- 1:08:52vehicle is down there too, there's actually footage of the
- 1:08:55point where they all kind of like throw their arms up in the
- 1:08:58end. They're like, what the hell are
- 1:09:00we doing? And like slowly turn round and
- 1:09:03then imagine what that does to your heart rate.
- 1:09:05Like probably just froze it way or and then you probably search
- 1:09:09for like 100 metres and then you realise oh fuck this, I've got
- 1:09:12no chance anyway would have been torture.
- 1:09:16And they have released a statement the Atlanta Track Club
- 1:09:19CEO who Atlanta Track Club must put this race on on behalf of
- 1:09:24USA Track and Field. So initially the response from
- 1:09:27USATF was, as Dean said, to stick by the results of first
- 1:09:32across the line and kind of like be a bit stubborn and this guy
- 1:09:37has said they're honoured to host it.
- 1:09:40In the women's race, a pace vehicle left the original course
- 1:09:43during mile 11. As race director, I take full
- 1:09:46responsibility for what occurred.
- 1:09:48The athletes should never have to make split decision, split
- 1:09:51second decision making between following a pace vehicle or
- 1:09:54trust in the official course. We're conducting a full review
- 1:09:57to determine exactly how and why, and Atlanta Track Club will
- 1:10:02make best efforts to ensure the affected athletes are made
- 1:10:07whole. Presumably referring to the
- 1:10:09prize money. And I guess maybe what he's
- 1:10:13inferring is that the selection stuff is kind of like out of
- 1:10:16their hands. We regret the confusion to the
- 1:10:19athletes affected on what was otherwise a good day.
- 1:10:22So. Yeah, getting more of that lack
- 1:10:25of the race organization, right. The guy puts his hand up, even
- 1:10:31goes beyond what he probably needs to do in terms of, you
- 1:10:34know, a lot of people might be defensive and say ultimately
- 1:10:37it's on the athletes, whereas he's gone beyond that to say
- 1:10:40it's not like we're putting on the race for you and we made it
- 1:10:45an error. And then he's going to look to
- 1:10:49remediate what he can in terms of financial assistance.
- 1:10:51I don't know. I just think that's the best
- 1:10:53response a race can give. So yeah, you just hope USA track
- 1:10:58and field give a similar one. You wouldn't like to be the
- 1:11:01driver of that car. No, you'd be mortified, but they
- 1:11:06like these things do happen and that's where people hopefully
- 1:11:09react like this. Like occasionally you're gonna
- 1:11:12I've bet. Have you ever gone the wrong way
- 1:11:15and sorry fault though the five orders?
- 1:11:22Probably, yeah. But like I've had a few
- 1:11:27instances where, yeah, I've either one been asked to
- 1:11:31Marshall and been redirected the wrong way or another time again,
- 1:11:35not done any real homework around what the course looks
- 1:11:38like and going the wrong way. And so I am more, I do pay more
- 1:11:43attention nowadays for that reason.
- 1:11:46But as they've, as these guys have said, like human error
- 1:11:49sometimes happens. So it's nice when people just do
- 1:11:53the right thing. Because we shared this, shared
- 1:11:56this to our story and someone challenged it and said, well,
- 1:12:01they said the torn, it sucks, but also you should know the
- 1:12:06course running one O 1. And I was like, yeah, perhaps
- 1:12:12this is my lack of planning, but I reckon maybe 80 percent, 90%
- 1:12:16the races I've done, I wouldn't have known the course if every
- 1:12:20single other runner was taken off it and I had to guide myself
- 1:12:23through each and every turn. Yeah, I think it's one thing to
- 1:12:27know the course, but it's another thing when you're
- 1:12:30following a lead vehicle that's there to direct you like a race
- 1:12:36it to a race at that level. Like I get it say it's a lead
- 1:12:40pace bike in there and it's a volunteer organization and
- 1:12:44they're doing their bit. Like then I think it's like,
- 1:12:48say, for example, the Ultra Perth 50K, like they do a great
- 1:12:51job and the lead, there's a lead bike put on.
- 1:12:54But at the same time that's a volunteer that if I, if I go off
- 1:12:59course there, it's I think the responsibility sits with me to
- 1:13:01make sure I know. And so I download the GPX file.
- 1:13:05I checked, I reviewed the map and you know, it's, it's a bit
- 1:13:10of a shared or more my responsibility in that sense for
- 1:13:13sure. But when it's like when all the
- 1:13:16roads are blocked off and it's a national championship and you're
- 1:13:19sitting behind the leg car, I think it's a bit exceptional.
- 1:13:23Yeah, fair, fair balance getting towards the end of the result
- 1:13:28Scottish Athletics Indoor Invitational quickly here.
- 1:13:31Sorry, did we mention the men's results?
- 1:13:34Yeah, go on. So the winner was Wesley Kip, 2,
- 1:13:39who featured in the US men's US men's cross country teamed in
- 1:13:45the at the world recent world champs.
- 1:13:47He was the athlete that went only knows one way, which is go
- 1:13:50out pretty hard. Hilary Ball was second.
- 1:13:53I think Hilary Balls made the see world and Olympic team he
- 1:13:57runs for like he might have been run for that U.S.
- 1:14:00Army team at some point. Mohammed.
- 1:14:02Mohammed I. Was going to say his age there
- 1:14:0536 suggests he may have made the fair few teams in his time.
- 1:14:08Yeah, he's he's been around when Mohammed was third, so sorry,
- 1:14:14611561306121 And then yeah, Charles Hicks is the defector.
- 1:14:20He was formally ran for the UK, didn't he?
- 1:14:23And now runs for the USA. Sold his song.
- 1:14:27Yeah, he has in 6210. So yeah, good runs by those
- 1:14:32guys. Didn't golf course as far as I'm
- 1:14:34aware. No dramas there.
- 1:14:37Yeah, Scottish athletics held an indoor Invitational.
- 1:14:41Where M11 were present. So Keely Hodgkinson stepped down
- 1:14:45to the 400 meters on the back of her world record the week prior.
- 1:14:49She managed to win this race in 5149, which I was, I don't
- 1:14:56really know too much about 400 times or how they ran, trying to
- 1:15:00contextualise it. So I looked at the World Indoor
- 1:15:03standards and yes, she's won the race, but she's also ran the
- 1:15:08auto queue for World Indoors as well, so it's a bit mad that
- 1:15:14she's able to do that. She looked good too.
- 1:15:17Didn't she look fast? She looked rapid, Yeah.
- 1:15:20Yeah, but I didn't look awful, didn't look completely like she
- 1:15:25was overreaching. It was very cool.
- 1:15:29But then I guess to contextualize it still, I looked
- 1:15:32at the the world record all time for Fem Cabal.
- 1:15:36Obviously 400 being a distance. She's ran 2 seconds faster than
- 1:15:40that still. Indoor.
- 1:15:42Yes. That would make sense because
- 1:15:45who is it? Who's the 400 meter hurdler that
- 1:15:48won gold in the fewer in the open 400?
- 1:15:52The other hurdler? Laroni.
- 1:15:54Sydney McLaughlin. Sydney McLaughlin, she might
- 1:15:56have run quicker again, right? And a flat 448 high on there.
- 1:16:02Yeah, looking at this list now, Femka bowls ran sub 50 seconds
- 1:16:08seven times. Indoors.
- 1:16:12Indoors, But I mean, still, that's like Keely's first shot
- 1:16:17at it and a non event. So yeah, it's still mighty
- 1:16:20impressive. Is that more impressive than
- 1:16:24what Femke did running sub two minutes?
- 1:16:26Good question. They're both standards, right?
- 1:16:30Hit the the standards. I think it's 2 flat .9 or
- 1:16:35something for the yeah it is 800.
- 1:16:38So they're probably both up there, right?
- 1:16:40Yeah, comparable. Yeah, there you go.
- 1:16:44Georgia Hunter Bell also changed distance well ran a slightly
- 1:16:48different distance. She ran at 800 meters in winning
- 1:16:51from the front in 157.8. Second in that race was CAP
- 1:16:55visit of Australia in two 2.4. So healthy margin for Georgia
- 1:17:00Hunter Bell there. That's pretty rapid indoors.
- 1:17:04I mean it only doesn't look that rapid because you have Keely
- 1:17:07running 154. But yeah, if you take away the
- 1:17:13outlier, it's like handicap Batten, like Batten without the
- 1:17:18odds on favourites. That's a it's a very good run,
- 1:17:23yeah. There's also 1500s Reve Walcott
- 1:17:26Nolan 19401.5, which is pretty fast in itself.
- 1:17:30She's another British girl. Lastly to the USA Indoors
- 1:17:33championships. Do you want to walk us through
- 1:17:35these ones? You're usually quite across the
- 1:17:38USA stuff. Yeah, I haven't been this
- 1:17:41weekend. I haven't caught much of it
- 1:17:42other than through Instagram. So too.
- 1:17:45Much time in the saddle this weekend.
- 1:17:47We were trying our training else, I mean, we haven't even
- 1:17:49got to that, but it's just been just training too hard.
- 1:17:52But I'll whip through, I'll whip through the results.
- 1:17:57How about I just race through them and then we can pass
- 1:17:59comments of what has popped up on our feeds.
- 1:18:03But these are all for context. These are all to standards for
- 1:18:09the world champs that are coming up in Poland, right?
- 1:18:13And is it top 2 indoors? Often it's top three for
- 1:18:16outdoors, but top 2 indoors. So I'll stick to the top 2 in
- 1:18:19these. So in the women's 800, it was
- 1:18:22Addison Wiley in 159.4, beating home Valerie Tobias in 159.7,
- 1:18:30The women's 1500, Nikki Hiltz in 411, just ahead of Gracie Morris
- 1:18:36in 411. Five hundredths between them and
- 1:18:39they were only a 10th and 1/2 in ahead of or 2/10 between 3rd and
- 1:18:454th as well. So very close racing The women's
- 1:18:483000 meters is Emily McKay in 8:30.
- 1:18:52So quicker than what we saw the our open 3000 and then Ellie
- 1:18:58Saint Pierre was second in 831. The men's 800, it was Cooper,
- 1:19:05Lipton House, the 16 maybe now 17 year old in 146.6, Sean Dolan
- 1:19:12in 147.1 and he was 5 hundredths or six hundredths ahead of Zai
- 1:19:17Harrison. Another very close race for
- 1:19:18those spots. I think Green in the men's 1500
- 1:19:22was first in 337 and Luke Hauser was 2 hundredths behind him in
- 1:19:28337.67 and they just picked Vincent Ciardi who was six
- 1:19:36hundredths behind them. So also, again, very close
- 1:19:38racing, which is cool. And then in the men's 3000
- 1:19:41meters, which in terms of fields was probably the the most
- 1:19:46stacked field, I would say the and it was Cole Hawker who got
- 1:19:52the win in 739.253 hundredths ahead of yard and a goose and
- 1:19:56Nico Young was 100th behind them.
- 1:19:58So 4 hundredths separating first and 3rd, which I did did appear
- 1:20:03in my in my feed a few times that race.
- 1:20:06Yeah, knowingly. I haven't seen it yet.
- 1:20:08So I was trying to find a YouTube playback and none of
- 1:20:11it's on there. I.
- 1:20:12Mean that's probably part of the problem is it's hard to follow
- 1:20:16the sport sometimes and like I mentioned same with Tokyo.
- 1:20:18I couldn't even get a live stream.
- 1:20:20I eventually found 1 and I was running, I was doing my long run
- 1:20:23on Sunday and I was like, Oh, yes, getting sucked right into
- 1:20:27it. It's sort of my pace started
- 1:20:30picking up and it was English commentary.
- 1:20:32It's the, oh, I forgot. Like, what's his name?
- 1:20:35Is it Japan running news or the I forget, forgot the guy's name,
- 1:20:38but he, he speaks very good English.
- 1:20:41Yeah. And he, and it was his voice.
- 1:20:44And then it got to a point where the, the, the group is chasing
- 1:20:48down and overtook keep Chogi. And I was like, hold on a
- 1:20:52minute, I've been done. And so there's over 1000 people
- 1:20:56tuning into race. That happened two years ago.
- 1:21:01Well, I'm glad that when you flicked it through, I did click
- 1:21:04on it and at that point there was Japanese subtitles like
- 1:21:07taking up 75% of the screen, so I quickly got rid of it.
- 1:21:11At least I. Was prepared to take that like
- 1:21:14also that's is if I could get the audio that would be enough.
- 1:21:17But yeah, and I did go on to watch athletics and there was no
- 1:21:21Australian, even Australian light stream option mentioned,
- 1:21:26which is a bit of a shame. But anything else I guess we say
- 1:21:29on that. I mean, a lot of the favourites
- 1:21:31I would say got through. I mean, Sinclair Johnson
- 1:21:35finishing fourth in the mid 1500 is maybe a bit of an upset.
- 1:21:39And then obviously Nico Young missing out as well and.
- 1:21:45Then I guess the men's 1500 meters showing the consequences
- 1:21:49of trying to double back for a second event after going with
- 1:21:53your primary 1. So Nagus and Hokka and Cupertier
- 1:21:59and where's Port as he doubled as well.
- 1:22:02At least those three anyway. They all ran the the 3000
- 1:22:05meters. I think that was the night
- 1:22:07before. And obviously for Cole and the
- 1:22:10Goose, they got the two spots in the 3K.
- 1:22:13So it was a bit of a free hit to come back and do the 1500 meters
- 1:22:17anyway. But then just to see Hocker down
- 1:22:21in 5th place after the past six months that he's had, it just
- 1:22:25doesn't quite look right, does it?
- 1:22:27When you you see that Nathan Green, Luke House and Vincent
- 1:22:31Chiasi, they're all kind of breaking the tape together.
- 1:22:34You love to see that though, don't you?
- 1:22:35As a spectator, just how fine the margins are and that they're
- 1:22:39human. And yeah, that's cool.
- 1:22:42That Nathan Green guy, I've seen a interview with him afterwards
- 1:22:46and he says like, yeah, coach, he's just got me to peek
- 1:22:49perfectly. Like this is my second race of
- 1:22:51the season. How is he able to go out and
- 1:22:55just put like the form that Carl Hawk has been in?
- 1:23:00Yeah, it's not bad. Yeah, slightly frustrating
- 1:23:02championships for old mate Cooper Tier again, finishing
- 1:23:07seventh in the 3K and 7th in the 1500 meters.
- 1:23:10Feel like he's building a bit though.
- 1:23:12I reckon. You know, when you interviewed
- 1:23:14him and he was saying he was going to have a bit of downtime
- 1:23:16and chill out. Like he didn't sound like he was
- 1:23:19going to say do what? Which Speaking of, no mention of
- 1:23:26Hobbs Kessler. Yeah.
- 1:23:29I think he got a little bit of a niggle after like the day he ran
- 1:23:32that world record. Yeah, interesting.
- 1:23:35Because like he was sort of, I feel like did the opposite, just
- 1:23:37went ham and got fit quickly, got into exceptional shape.
- 1:23:42And then whereas Kubu I think sounded like he's having some
- 1:23:44downtime. So maybe he's still building
- 1:23:47into his season, hopefully. No Josh Howey either.
- 1:23:50Tops counselor. Reminds me of him, another world
- 1:23:53record holder a couple of weeks ago.
- 1:23:56Yeah, you're taking shots there, aren't you?
- 1:23:59No, no, I'm just saying he would.
- 1:24:00Too early. Yeah, he would have been in the
- 1:24:03lineup, Owen. 'S not on, so someone needs to
- 1:24:06try a bit of spice in which, Speaking of that leads us to
- 1:24:10Owen's favorite segment. We could drop a voice note in
- 1:24:14from Owen noticed Thoughts. Oh, what do you reckon he'll
- 1:24:17say? So this is in our running news
- 1:24:20show notes. We've got Will Tedgy band news.
- 1:24:24So we did cover this ahead of the World Championships last
- 1:24:29year, didn't we? Because when we were speculating
- 1:24:32over Jess Hall and how she would go over the 1500, we mentioned
- 1:24:37that one of the major threats was the Ethiopian athlete and is
- 1:24:45it to rebate will Will Ted you? But they were issued with a a
- 1:24:52doping ban. So they they weren't allowed to
- 1:24:54compete in Tokyo last year, were they?
- 1:24:58But that was before the the conclusion of their arbitration
- 1:25:04period that bef between that that period where they'll
- 1:25:07basically they they hadn't yet handed down a sanction, but it
- 1:25:11sounded like something was coming and it and what and it
- 1:25:14has been handed down. And I think is it, when is it
- 1:25:17effective from? It's effective from before world
- 1:25:20indoor championships last year. Yeah, Feb 25 Does it say?
- 1:25:25Yeah, and sorry, when effective in terms of they well, Teji
- 1:25:30competed at the indoor champs last year and finished she
- 1:25:35finished second and and so she's been her results have been
- 1:25:41removed for that championship, which meant that the Aussie
- 1:25:46Georgia Griffith, who finished fourth gets promoted into
- 1:25:51bronze. So which is awesome to get the
- 1:25:56recognition of a global medal. But then at the same time very,
- 1:26:01you know, it's a bit double edged because you don't get to
- 1:26:04enjoy that moment. Yeah, Must feel like a bit
- 1:26:08bittersweet, mustn't it? Georgia Hunter Bell was all, she
- 1:26:12finished third in the race, so she gets promoted to the silver
- 1:26:15as well. So, yeah, I mean, it's good that
- 1:26:18they've they've got her and they've backdated the ban and
- 1:26:22they're applying the results accordingly.
- 1:26:26I mean, they've backdated it to February 2025, which is what, 12
- 1:26:31months ago? What was what was happening in
- 1:26:332024 when she's done well, 15 different races and probably 1
- 1:26:40all sorts there. Yeah, it's an interesting one.
- 1:26:43Like I don't know how I feel feel about it.
- 1:26:45Like because the the ban regards not providing a sample and I
- 1:26:53think it can carry a term of like 4 years.
- 1:26:55She received a ban of two years because I think she was found to
- 1:27:00be negligent rather than intentional with her skipping
- 1:27:05it. And at least that's what she was
- 1:27:06found to be well able to be proved to be negligent, which
- 1:27:09reduces the sentence. I do remember hearing an
- 1:27:13interview, I'd have been on the inside Running podcast of an
- 1:27:16athlete. She tells of her story.
- 1:27:19It might have been a like a Hobart Grand Prix where she had
- 1:27:25a, a flight to catch that afternoon to get back to let's
- 1:27:28say Melbourne or somewhere. And she, she was fairly young
- 1:27:33and inexperienced and she'd been pulled aside by whoever the drug
- 1:27:37testers were and she couldn't provide a sample in time.
- 1:27:41And so she just panicked and left and received a doping ban
- 1:27:45off the back of that. So look, just playing devil's
- 1:27:51advocate in terms of, you know, if, if they're found to be
- 1:27:53negligent, it sounds like maybe they just.
- 1:27:56But if you've been in the system that long, which I'm sure she
- 1:27:58has, she's probably fairly familiar with the rules of rules
- 1:28:06of the game, I would have thought.
- 1:28:07I will allow your devil's advocacy and the listeners will
- 1:28:11draw their own conclusions. But you know, Owen wouldn't be
- 1:28:14allowing that devil's advocacy. She also hasn't raced since July
- 1:28:1925. So I mean the two year ban will
- 1:28:22be backdated till then. So she's eight months into it
- 1:28:26already. She'll be back for LA 2028.
- 1:28:30Which is a bit farcical really, isn't it?
- 1:28:33YouTube Diaries. Shit, you were going to cover 1
- 1:28:37here, weren't you? Yeah.
- 1:28:39I just thought we'd mention the it's a bit going against the the
- 1:28:46brand that is the name of the segment which is YouTube.
- 1:28:50But I just sort of. We do too.
- 1:28:51We do too. We can do too.
- 1:28:52Brilliant. Well, I'll mention the
- 1:28:55Journeyman podcast and the reason for that is 1 because I
- 1:28:59listen to it and then two, because that's who Tim Vincent's
- 1:29:04a Co host on that and he's very kindly, you know, jumped on the
- 1:29:10London Calling series. And so just that I've mentioned
- 1:29:14he's he's doing that on top of his weekly commitment, which is
- 1:29:17to the journeyman podcast. So it's himself, Elaine Dutton,
- 1:29:22who Elaine along with taught Tom Moorcroft and many others have
- 1:29:27been training partners of the front runner crew in Perth for a
- 1:29:30long time. Elaine moved to Queensland to
- 1:29:34continue his studies in medicine and so we lost him to the the
- 1:29:40Gold Coast and he has teamed up I think with Tim and Geordie M
- 1:29:45McLennan, who I remember racing Geordie in the Gold Coast
- 1:29:49Marathon in 2023 where we ran most of the race together.
- 1:29:55So yeah, I remember those guys there if like a fun listen in
- 1:29:58terms of like easy listen. They track their running
- 1:30:03adventures and their training adventures and sort of it's nice
- 1:30:07to hear what's going on in terms of quite the Queensland running
- 1:30:10scene, which is, which is cool. So yeah, worth a listen if you
- 1:30:13have time. Thank you.
- 1:30:15Second one being again, Team Macau bound, but they put out
- 1:30:20because they've got like 5 or 6 different athletes, they're able
- 1:30:22to follow different narratives within the one channel, which is
- 1:30:26cool in itself. Although it is the group
- 1:30:29dynamic, they can also like kind of zoom in on individuals when
- 1:30:33they're building for certain races themselves.
- 1:30:35So this recent video came out on the back of the Ellis cross and
- 1:30:40Sarah Aston making their marathon debut.
- 1:30:42And was it Seville the other week, Ellis ran 210 and Sarah
- 1:30:47ran 235. But to tie this into an
- 1:30:53interview which is coming out later on this week, spoiler
- 1:30:57alert, you may hear a lot about team Macau spoken about in that
- 1:31:01video. So it may just make you think
- 1:31:04about it a little bit differently because it's kind of
- 1:31:06like a bit of behind the scenes really in terms of like what
- 1:31:10goes into the videos, what the thought, what the thoughts are.
- 1:31:15They're so deliberate with the content.
- 1:31:16It's not just like, let's just film each other and we'll see
- 1:31:20how it comes out. They're kind of intentionally
- 1:31:24doing this story, making stuff. And they've also kind of all
- 1:31:27agreed that like, listen, everything goes in the good, the
- 1:31:32bad, whatever. Like, we're all in with it.
- 1:31:36We can't just be like kind of clipping this to make ourselves
- 1:31:39look good or like, we don't want to face the music when shit goes
- 1:31:42bad. So it's, it's nice to hear like
- 1:31:45that authentic side of it. And yeah, Ellis ran 210 on the
- 1:31:51day. And he talks about through the
- 1:31:55the block, that's his first marathon block, Just trying to
- 1:31:58like feel some sort of accomplishment on every single
- 1:32:01run that you've done. Going through that British
- 1:32:03winter, like dark, pissing down mornings and evenings, just
- 1:32:08getting the run done is like kind of give yourself that
- 1:32:11positive feedback to then fuel you to go again the next one.
- 1:32:19He also references that he was aware you only get to debut
- 1:32:23once. Whether it's a good debut, a bad
- 1:32:25debut relative to the goals that you set, it only ever happens
- 1:32:29once. So celebrate whatever the result
- 1:32:31is, which I thought was a nice little reflection on it.
- 1:32:36He's a bit of a joker himself and before the race he looks
- 1:32:39like directly into the camera and he's like, I'm not here to
- 1:32:42play games, I'm here to run fast.
- 1:32:45So I mean, two 10s, it's an impressive debut.
- 1:32:49So I mean, yeah, excited to follow his journey if he does
- 1:32:53continue going down the marathon path.
- 1:32:55And hopefully we can maybe get to speak to a few more of the
- 1:32:59Macau lads and girls because they're they're good fun.
- 1:33:03And keep your eyes peeled. I won't give away who the
- 1:33:05interviewee was, but I've told you it's one of them.
- 1:33:09Isa. So yeah, YouTube Diaries done.
- 1:33:15We're missing him for Double Trouble again.
- 1:33:16I always like to blame him. Yeah, you're probably not
- 1:33:19getting much from me this week. Maybe that cyclists are hard
- 1:33:23done by. More love for the cyclists out
- 1:33:25there. My legs are absolutely wrecked
- 1:33:27so I feel like that copper. Yeah, should play the victim.
- 1:33:32The underappreciated cyclists. They are underappreciated.
- 1:33:36Speaking of any, did you want to recap training your training
- 1:33:39week? Maybe in lieu of?
- 1:33:41Yeah, go on then. So I think it was a little bit
- 1:33:44of a lighter week on the cyclone front in terms of volume to 130
- 1:33:48K. But the running that was the
- 1:33:50main focus this week because I was kind of feeling good off the
- 1:33:54past couple of weeks of build and this was going to be a five
- 1:33:57week, 5 day week of running. So a bit of a tester in terms of
- 1:34:03could I step up with some volume.
- 1:34:05So it did run five days, two days on, one day off, 2 days on,
- 1:34:10one day off one day. And within that done two runs
- 1:34:15with a bit of steady effort in so 15 minutes steady in the
- 1:34:18first one, just going for like 150 heart rate range because
- 1:34:21that's previously what my steady output was.
- 1:34:25And I've learned that although you lose fitness, so you lose
- 1:34:29the ability to run a certain pace at that output, your zone
- 1:34:34doesn't really shift too much. It might move by like a beat or
- 1:34:38two or three, but rarely. It's just the difference between
- 1:34:43running four minute 30 if you're unfit versus 4 minutes if you
- 1:34:48fit. You still get the same training
- 1:34:51effect. Given that you are working at
- 1:34:52that same heart rate. It's not like you need to try
- 1:34:55and. Run.
- 1:34:56The steady pace that you previously had, because that'll
- 1:34:59probably do you some damage. Threshold.
- 1:35:02Yeah. So that was fun just looking at
- 1:35:05the watch trying to keep the heart rate down because I guess
- 1:35:07that's the risk with being somewhat unconditioned and unfit
- 1:35:11as you heart rate drift will just take you into that zone
- 1:35:15above. So it was nice to keep it around
- 1:35:171:50. I think the pace was just under
- 1:35:204 minutes somewhere, 355, something like that.
- 1:35:24Then the day after I would just do an easy run with some
- 1:35:28strides. First time doing strides in
- 1:35:30almost a year, which is bizarre given strides are like pretty
- 1:35:34much nothing but like just the the force that goes through your
- 1:35:38muscles during the strides. They're just a little bit risky.
- 1:35:42It's funny because I was telling you, wasn't I, about the the
- 1:35:45average pace that would come out from these strides.
- 1:35:48I've done it on a piece of grass.
- 1:35:50Regression. The regression strides, yeah,
- 1:35:53done it on some grass and I wasn't looking at my watch
- 1:35:55obviously because it's fucking 20 seconds stride.
- 1:35:59But then afterwards I was curious to see and I
- 1:36:03deliberately gave it a nudge whilst it was stride and then
- 1:36:06like tried to get my form going and stuff.
- 1:36:09So then afterwards, I was curious what that meant.
- 1:36:12So it's fun to see that. So then five of them, it was
- 1:36:15like the first 1-303-306-3093 twelve 315 referring back to the
- 1:36:23actual moment of doing them wasn't I didn't feel like I was
- 1:36:27blowing up. It was because obviously it's
- 1:36:292020 seconds. How can you blow up?
- 1:36:31It's just the the muscles were getting fatigued and they like
- 1:36:35my legs would just break down after 18 seconds and then after
- 1:36:4015 seconds and then after 12 seconds.
- 1:36:42So the I couldn't even hold form for 20 seconds which is
- 1:36:46hilarious. Like regardless of how
- 1:36:49aerobically fit I am off the bike, it's just all that
- 1:36:51neuromuscular conditioning and the mind body connection to send
- 1:36:57these fucking waves to your muscles to actually move a bit
- 1:37:01faster than they have done for a while.
- 1:37:03It takes a while to come back. That mind body you, you were
- 1:37:11Speaking of that Bite Fitness on Thursday.
- 1:37:13You were pretty keen early to Bennett on that Thursday morning
- 1:37:16ride, weren't you, to go to? There was the.
- 1:37:19Shades of Rodman on a Thursday morning.
- 1:37:22Yeah, just almost cycling off from the workout, spitting the
- 1:37:25chewy. Yeah, did you not have glasses
- 1:37:28on too for all that wet stuff just getting thrown in your
- 1:37:32eyes? It was the one morning that I
- 1:37:35didn't bring the glasses. I can't.
- 1:37:36Believe. It yeah, I know.
- 1:37:40I felt like an F1 driver in the rain.
- 1:37:42You know, when when you watch the TV and you're looking at
- 1:37:44like, how the hell can they see where they're going?
- 1:37:46And that was me on the wheel. I was like, I can't believe he's
- 1:37:50not wearing anything like because I'm just covered in shit
- 1:37:52from it was for context. It was what the it's a bit of an
- 1:37:56electrical storm and and there was some too heavy showers just
- 1:37:59before we started our workout in Kings Park cycling workout.
- 1:38:03And yeah, it's pretty wet, which and it's the first bit of wet
- 1:38:07we've had in a while, right. So it made made for some
- 1:38:10unpleasant writing. And we were joking about how
- 1:38:13soft we are and the fact that we're crying because it's rained
- 1:38:16once. Very pretty.
- 1:38:19I drove to the start because I didn't want to get wet.
- 1:38:25But yeah, good week overall, 60K is worth of running and keen to
- 1:38:29progress it again this week. What that means I haven't quite
- 1:38:33thought about yet. Probably, just maybe get the
- 1:38:36steady up to half an hour, keep the rest of the volume similar.
- 1:38:41May, Yeah, probably just do that, another week of two steady
- 1:38:45runs and then maybe next week can try a bit of a tempo style
- 1:38:49workhouse. How about you?
- 1:38:52Yes I rode 130 odd K and ran 90K so 2 workouts.
- 1:39:02It's like this 3 by 8 minutes by the two-minute float.
- 1:39:07Do that twice, so Tuesday, Thursday, so Thursday afternoon
- 1:39:11after Thursday morning bike intervals and then double T
- 1:39:17that's it. And then yeah, Saturday morning,
- 1:39:21like the aerobic or longer ride, you know, the CRT ride and then
- 1:39:25Sunday morning long run, like 90 minute long run and then some
- 1:39:30just easy jogging and incidental cycling in it sprinkled in
- 1:39:34amongst that. So yeah, still feeling a bit
- 1:39:38tight and sore just on my right leg, but not the not bone pain,
- 1:39:43but just more just things a bit tight and stiff.
- 1:39:45So try not to get too carried away with the workouts yet, but
- 1:39:50at the same time still getting a bit quicker each week with them,
- 1:39:53which is good. Just trying to yeah, just hope
- 1:39:58just loading everything up. It's sort of not wanting to push
- 1:40:02it too much. So I'll probably sit around this
- 1:40:04for a couple more weeks, get a good I can.
- 1:40:08If I want to do more I can cycle a bit more but and try and sit
- 1:40:12around 100 odd KS a week. How's the general fatigue given
- 1:40:17you're doing quite a bit of quality across running and
- 1:40:21cycling now? Because I've started to fail it.
- 1:40:24Yeah, tired. No, definitely.
- 1:40:26Like my training load is like up to is up at a pretty reasonable
- 1:40:31level like I'm in terms of if yeah, if my training peaks is
- 1:40:36anything to go by. Now you can hold a bit of a
- 1:40:38higher training load like triathletes do compared to
- 1:40:40runners. But yeah, my training, it feels
- 1:40:44like enough for sure. So I'm pretty, pretty happy with
- 1:40:48what's going on. I think I just want to keep
- 1:40:51repeating it for a few more weeks and then I might then
- 1:40:55toggle it a little bit towards focusing a little bit more on
- 1:40:59running, but don't want to get too carried away because I want
- 1:41:04to just make sure my legs are everything's feeling good.
- 1:41:08Yeah, I guess it's important to reflect on like where we are now
- 1:41:15is a lot further ahead than where we were four to six weeks
- 1:41:19ago. So like, yeah, you may not be
- 1:41:21able to progress the workouts yet, but you're still able to
- 1:41:24complete them. And that's a frustrating thing,
- 1:41:28like, oh, I can't keep building my volume or can't build bigger
- 1:41:31workouts, but you're still able to do them.
- 1:41:35Yeah, that's right. Like, I ran 90 minutes or
- 1:41:37whatever on Sunday and I'm like, but normally every other week
- 1:41:41I'm running 2 1/2 hours and I should be doing strides after
- 1:41:46every run or, you know, all these sorts of more, more, more.
- 1:41:49But I think, yeah, like you mentioned, the training load is
- 1:41:54pretty solid. So I just don't need to get too
- 1:41:56carried away. I think we're both doing a
- 1:41:58pretty good job. Yeah, and Owen's doing all the
- 1:42:02racing for us, so that's all right.
- 1:42:05He is, although he's he's pulled up stumps, isn't he?
- 1:42:10I never thought he'd get, he'd get to the point where he's
- 1:42:13having a a mid season break. He was on that much of A tear, I
- 1:42:17reckon, Aden said the word. Yeah, goodbye, Aden.
- 1:42:23I wonder which which of his informants will be passing him
- 1:42:26on the the comments that we're making this week.
- 1:42:28We've been pretty good, I thought.
- 1:42:30Yeah, gone soft on him. All right, I reckon that's us.
- 1:42:35If you're still listening and you haven't yet given us the
- 1:42:38review or the rating, then do it now before the outro and before
- 1:42:42you close your app. But otherwise, enjoy the
- 1:42:45interview that's dropping later this week, and we'll chat to you

- 1:42:50See ya by the. Sunday still chasing pee pees
- 1:42:53while the world spins round miles in the bank.
- 1:42:55Heart rate low. Big dreams, but we take it slow.
