- 0:01Thursday. So that means it's time to talk
- 0:02to Jason Savage, executive director of The Maine Republican
- 0:05Party, who joins us at this time every Thursday, and he's here
- 0:09again. Jason, how are things?
- 0:11Good morning, Matt. Unlike our counterparts in the
- 0:13Democratic Party, it's a pleasure to talk to the media.
- 0:18You're of course alluding to the fact they just had their party
- 0:21convention. And unlike the rather open door
- 0:24that you guys had, they decided to close the door to certain
- 0:29journalists that they didn't like so that it couldn't be
- 0:31covered. Which didn't stop anybody, by
- 0:33the way, from getting the footage and the pictures and
- 0:35everything else from inside, which makes me laugh a little
- 0:38bit. But what did you, what did you
- 0:39think of their convention? Jason Savage, since you.
- 0:42Know I that was the most the most striking thing was that
- 0:47even a lot of the regular report of the regular like mainstream
- 0:50legacy liberal media, they didn't really cover it and
- 0:54couldn't have couldn't have been good for them at the whole you
- 0:57know, one of the big points of the convention is actually to
- 0:59highlight your candidates and they seem to her hiding instead
- 1:02of highlighting their candidates.
- 1:05So I guess my take away was didn't didn't seem like all that
- 1:10enthusiastic of a group, didn't seem that big, looked rather
- 1:14kind of dark and unfun. But I guess that's kind of like
- 1:18the Democrat Party these days. So when you were like watching
- 1:24the dynamic inside that room, you know, with this is right off
- 1:27the off the decision by Janet Mills that she's, you know,
- 1:30ultimately going to be taking a pass on this race.
- 1:33You know, you're looking at that weird dynamic that's inside
- 1:35there. What what, what do you make of
- 1:37that tension? I mean, she hasn't endorsed him,
- 1:39right? She hasn't endorsed him.
- 1:41Clearly there's an antipathy there.
- 1:43I think there's a resentment there.
- 1:44And, and honestly, for once, I actually sympathize with her or
- 1:47I I sort of understand her, you know, sort of her feelings on
- 1:51that, right? It's like, you know, look at all
- 1:52the things I did for you people. I basically govern like a
- 1:55progressive this whole time to make you all happy.
- 1:58And you threw me in the trash bin.
- 2:00Like, you know, I'd be pretty sore about it too, right?
- 2:03Do you think it's like, go ahead.
- 2:04It's. It's like, it's like she let
- 2:06them hijack her administration and got nothing.
- 2:10You know, I got and got nothing for it.
- 2:11You know, I, I let you all hijack my, my administration and
- 2:15all I got was to give Tim Walz this stupid T-shirt.
- 2:19Well, I could bring up Tim Walz and maybe I will in a second
- 2:22here, but but I guess my, my question was, do you think that
- 2:25there's any sort of enduring harm that that's all going to do
- 2:31to them? I mean, I feel like I was
- 2:33reading some letters to the editor in like the Press Herald
- 2:35and whatnot from, from former Mills supporters and whatnot.
- 2:37And you can, you can almost tell that they're pretty, they're
- 2:41pretty sore about it too. And that, you know, there's a
- 2:43belief in a lot of circles in the Democratic Party that Grand
- 2:46Platner is going to self destruct and that he's actually
- 2:48a flawed and terrible candidate and that Susan Collins is going
- 2:51to eat him for lunch and all that.
- 2:53I mean, I, you know, I'd be cautious about getting too
- 2:55triumphant about that. But the point is that they're
- 2:58doubting him, they're worried about him, and they're angry
- 3:02about how this interloper walked in and just like, smacked around
- 3:05a two term governor. Do you think there's any ill
- 3:07will there or problem that that creates?
- 3:10I think there I think there is. Are there red flags with this
- 3:13Platiner guy? Yeah.
- 3:18Yeah, look at at it this way. This is how I look at it because
- 3:21I was, I was involved, you know, in different ways in the Le Page
- 3:23administration to Governor State for eight years.
- 3:26Whether you do it well or poorly is an incredible amount of work,
- 3:31you know, and it takes a lot of people.
- 3:33And I'm sure that in the Mills administration, a large number
- 3:36of those people were the same people who are in that that
- 3:39convention room or whatever it was.
- 3:43And, you know, there, there are people in the party that have
- 3:46done the work to get her there. And they think they did a pretty
- 3:49good job. And even the people who said
- 3:51they weren't voting for Janet Mills thought, you know, the
- 3:53progressives, they said they, they thought she did a pretty
- 3:56good job. So there has to be some
- 3:59resentment. I don't know that you'll see it
- 4:01bubble to the surface and become a major, major thing in the
- 4:05election, but it will exist in the hearts of the people who
- 4:08hold it no matter what. And there's no way for Graham
- 4:10Platner and his team to to fix that.
- 4:12I mean, the other thing they have is, you know, as much as
- 4:17Platner has kind of taken the Democrat base by storm, they
- 4:20don't, I don't believe that they have the roots, you know, like,
- 4:23like the mill side of the the party did where they know
- 4:27somebody in every town. They can make a phone call, get
- 4:29something done. I mean, the Platiner people are,
- 4:31are New York and DC, you know, media people who just figured
- 4:35out how to create a sort of weird fake celebrity with all
- 4:38kinds of unfortunate problems. And, and it worked because
- 4:43Democrats are doing what Republicans were doing in
- 4:46looking for people they think are new, fresh and authentic.
- 4:50Just so happens that they picked a really, really bad one this
- 4:53time around. So you mentioned Tim Walls.
- 4:56I don't want to spend very much time on him because I don't
- 4:58think he deserves it. But what did you think about
- 5:00that being your keynote speaker? I mean, that's the dude you're
- 5:02featuring at the Democratic coming out party here.
- 5:05I mean, that's an interesting choice.
- 5:07To me, the the fraud father and the fraud mother in the same
- 5:11room, yeah. I mean, it was like either
- 5:15extremely tone deaf or nobody else was willing to come and and
- 5:19run the gauntlet of being on stage with with Janet Mills with
- 5:22all the fraud allegations and Graham Plattner with, you know,
- 5:25the Nazi tattoo and other assorted problems.
- 5:27I mean, it would be quite a challenge, I would imagine if
- 5:31somebody who's had to try to, you know, get keynote speakers
- 5:34in for conventions for quite a while now.
- 5:36When you when the top of your ticket is looking that beat up
- 5:39and and and flawed it, it gets really hard to get somebody to
- 5:42come in. It is indeed, this is also a
- 5:45time to they featured them obviously at the convention.
- 5:47But, you know, afterwards, earlier this week, they also
- 5:50featured them, you know, in some media debates here the the
- 5:52Democrats that are running for governor are, are now, you know,
- 5:56sort of more prominently facing off against each other in some
- 5:59of these forums and conversations and whatnot.
- 6:02I had an opportunity for once to actually TuneIn and watch at
- 6:06least some of it. I'm not sure if you did as well.
- 6:08But if so, did you have any thoughts on what our friends on
- 6:11the left are are saying about their candidacies and and and
- 6:15what they would do as governor? I think that the big take away
- 6:18for listeners is on the Democrat side, every single one of the
- 6:22candidates is is pledging to just double down on the
- 6:25destructive policies that have gotten us in the mess we're in
- 6:27now. And I think when I would look at
- 6:30the candidates themselves, what I see, you know, with Troy
- 6:32Jackson kind of fake campaigning with mom Donnie by putting
- 6:35himself in images you got, you know, Shanna, Shanna Bello is
- 6:38hugging Graham Plattner every chance she gets.
- 6:40She gets in front of a camera. They are they are taking them
- 6:44very most extreme tact they can because that's they realize now
- 6:48after the Platinum Mills situation, they're only going to
- 6:51get nominated if, you know, they're over over a huddled with
- 6:55Stalin on the left. You know, that far over there.
- 6:57It's the only way it's going to work.
- 6:59So it's it's a sad, sad race to the left to represent working
- 7:04people in Maine who do not exist politically on the left there.
- 7:09You know, the people who are getting up every day and making
- 7:10the state of Maine work. They're going to work.
- 7:13They're doing the things that have to get done.
- 7:15They are not radical leftist like Zoran Mamdani and Shanna
- 7:19Bellows and Troy Jackson. But it's almost like they're
- 7:21auditioning for for a people that that they imagine exist and
- 7:25and don't. And we'll see how it goes.
- 7:27But I think our field, you know, is putting real solutions out
- 7:30there and really addressing the issues that matter, while the
- 7:32Democrats are just, you know, they're acting like court
- 7:34jesters, you know? One of the other things, too, is
- 7:37just this weird obsession with Donald Trump.
- 7:38I mean, they've clearly, they've clearly come to the conclusion
- 7:42that the thing that they need to do this year is just mention his
- 7:46name as much as possible because they perceive this is going to
- 7:48be a bad year for Republicans because of him being in the
- 7:52White House. Just, you know, that it's like
- 7:54conventional wisdom on steroids, right?
- 7:56But it's just. It's just.
- 7:57That Donald Trump doesn't lower people's electricity bills and
- 8:00help? Well, yeah.
- 8:01I mean, that's where I was going to go with this.
- 8:02It's like it just highlights to me like the complete bankruptcy
- 8:05of of the agendas that they're talking about.
- 8:07I mean, they've been in charge for eight years.
- 8:09They've on everything they've wanted and everything's gone
- 8:11pretty crappy. So you're going to try to tell
- 8:14me that this time is different than like, you know, if you vote
- 8:17for me again, I'll I'll fix it this time.
- 8:20And they're just trying to absolve themselves of
- 8:21responsibility by saying it's all his fault and he's only been
- 8:23there for a year and a half. I mean it's.
- 8:26Under, under Democrats, if, if I can be so, so bold as to say
- 8:29under Democrats, everything in Maine has gone to hell and they
- 8:32don't care about working people in the state of Maine.
- 8:35It's that simple. Jason Savage, before I let you
- 8:37go, I would be remiss if I didn't ask you about, of course,
- 8:39the Republican side of the aisle.
- 8:40Since we've been sitting here talking about Democrats the
- 8:42whole time. You know, we're now in the
- 8:44homestretch for the primary for the for the governor's race.
- 8:47Obviously, Susan Collins is now already in a, in a, in a general
- 8:51election contest against Graham Plattner.
- 8:54And all the money and commercials and stuff are
- 8:56pouring in. Certainly every time I watch a
- 8:57baseball game, I find that out. Your impression of where you
- 9:01stand right now, how do you feel?
- 9:02That's that's my that's my vibe check question for you right
- 9:05now. How do you feel about the year
- 9:06as it stands today? I feel cautiously optimistic and
- 9:13extremely tired because I we've never really had everything hit
- 9:19this speed this early. This is, you know, unprecedented
- 9:23to have everything kind of go off the way it has and so much
- 9:27happening so early. I feel a lot of energy on our
- 9:30side, just an incredible amount of energy.
- 9:32The you know, just this morning between 5:30 and when we get on
- 9:36here, I've got 4 emails from new people looking to do something
- 9:39to help. It feels really good in all all
- 9:42those regards. But it is a midterm, and so I
- 9:44have to maintain some some caution because when your party
- 9:48is in power, these midterm elections can get very, very
- 9:52dicey. So everybody's going to work.
- 9:54Everybody's going to bust your butt.
- 9:56We're launching a new program doing some promotion on it
- 9:59called the Neighborhood Navigator Program.
- 10:01It's to help people win elections in their towns.
- 10:04And that will help all the way up the ballot.
- 10:06So go to themaingop.com to sign up for that.
- 10:09I feel pretty good, but there's still a long way to go and a lot
- 10:12of work left to do. Indeed there is, and we're going
- 10:14to have to save some of those conversations for the future
- 10:16because we're out of time now, sadly.
- 10:18Jason, appreciate it as always. And we'll talk again next
- 10:20Thursday.
