- 0:00Welcome to Reformed Thinking. This is where we take a stack of
- 0:03your sources, your articles, notes, research, and we do a
- 0:07structured deep dive to pull out the most critical insights.
- 0:10Hello. Today we're opening up a passage
- 0:13that, well, I think many would say is the most solid defense of
- 0:16Christian security in the entire Bible.
- 0:18We're looking at Romans. Chapter 8, specifically verses
- 0:2128 through 39. It's a stunning piece of
- 0:24writing. It really is.
- 0:25Paul's been talking about the spirit, the fight with sin, even
- 0:29the suffering we all face in this broken world.
- 0:32And then he gets here and just brings it all to this incredible
- 0:34conclusion. He's asking a huge question,
- 0:36isn't he? After all this struggle, this
- 0:38external pressure and internal weakness, does any that make God
- 0:42saving work shaky or uncertain? And that's our mission for this
- 0:46deep dive. Our sources boil Pauls answer
- 0:48down to three massive certainties.
- 0:50The whole point is that our assurance isn't built on how
- 0:53we're doing or how we're feeling.
- 0:55No, it's built entirely on God's actions, totally outside of us.
- 0:58It's objective. We're looking for the three
- 1:01theological anchors Paul uses to guarantee that a believer gets
- 1:04all the way to the end, to glorification.
- 1:07And these three anchors, they're like 3 different modes of
- 1:09assurance. They're laid out with this
- 1:10amazing logical precision. Yeah.
- 1:13We go from God's plan to his legal verdict, and then finally
- 1:16to His active presence in the world.
- 1:18Yeah, I like thinking about the whole passage from verse 28 to
- 1:2139, like a safety deposit box. And inside is the believer's
- 1:25final salvation. OK.
- 1:27And to make sure it's absolutely secure, God puts three locks on
- 1:31it. Three locks that cannot be
- 1:33broken. I like that.
- 1:34So lock #1 will be the certainty of God's eternal and sovereign
- 1:38saving purpose. That's the golden chain.
- 1:40It guarantees the destination. Lock #2 is the certainty of
- 1:44God's irrevocable saving verdict in Christ that sets up the legal
- 1:48undisputed ownership through justification.
- 1:51And lock #3 the certainty of God's inseparable covenant love.
- 1:55This one proves that no force in the whole universe can pry that
- 1:58box open. So let's start with that first
- 2:00lock, the golden chain. Let's do it.
- 2:02The first step in building this assurance starts in Romans 8.28.
- 2:07It's a verse that's so well known it almost gets quoted
- 2:10without its context, which is dangerous.
- 2:13It is. It starts and we know that for
- 2:15those who love God, all things work together for good, for
- 2:19those who are called according to His purpose.
- 2:22And right away, that first phrase we know Paul doesn't
- 2:26start with a, you know, a hopeful guess or a nice feeling,
- 2:29he says. We know this is a piece of
- 2:32settled Christian knowledge. It's a doctrine that comes from
- 2:35who God is and what he's revealed.
- 2:37It's fixed its objective. Assurance begins in the mind
- 2:41with truth, not in the heart with feelings that come and go.
- 2:44And. One of the first things our
- 2:45sources point out is how we understand the mechanics of that
- 2:48verse. A lot of people here, all things
- 2:50work together for good, and they picture some, I don't know,
- 2:52impersonal cosmic force. The karma or fate?
- 2:56Yeah, that everything will just sort of balance out in the end.
- 2:58But the Greek verb Paul uses their Sinner guy is so
- 3:01important. It translates to works together,
- 3:04sure, but the grammar implies a single active personal agent
- 3:08doing the work. So it's not things working
- 3:11together, no. The real subject of that
- 3:13sentence, the one orchestrating it all, is God himself.
- 3:17That's why the verse has teeth. It's not impersonal.
- 3:20It is intensely personal. So we're not talking about
- 3:23circumstances magically falling into place.
- 3:25We're talking about the active, personal, wise and sovereign God
- 3:30who is standing behind and within every single event
- 3:33ordering it. Why is that distinction, God
- 3:36doing the work versus some impersonal force so vital for
- 3:41our assurance, especially when you the listener are going
- 3:44through real hardship? Well, because fate and chance
- 3:46give you no comfort. There's no goal if it's just an
- 3:49impersonal force who might just as easily turn against you
- 3:51tomorrow. True, but if it's your wise,
- 3:53good and loving Father who is sovereignly directing every
- 3:57event, then the outcome is certain.
- 3:59It means everything that happens in your life, every little
- 4:01detail, has a purpose and an intention behind it, directed by
- 4:05a mind that loves you. And that takes away the fear
- 4:07that everything is just spinning out of control.
- 4:09It does. That brings us to the scope of
- 4:11all things. People often limit that phrase
- 4:14to, you know, good things or neutral things.
- 4:17But Paul's just spent verses 18 to 27 talking about suffering,
- 4:21creation, groaning our weakness, and prayer.
- 4:24The context demands a total scope.
- 4:27Absolutely total. The all things has to include
- 4:29the dark, the difficult, the painful realities, persecution,
- 4:33distress, financial trouble, broken relationships, sickness.
- 4:36None of those things fall outside of God's providential
- 4:39circle. If God only used the good
- 4:41things, it wouldn't be sovereign Providence.
- 4:42No, it'd just be him stepping in from time to time.
- 4:44Paul is saying God uses all of it.
- 4:46OK, so if the promise covers everything, who gets the
- 4:49promise? The verse describes them in two
- 4:51ways, from a human side and a divine side.
- 4:54From the human side, they are those who love God, and that
- 4:57points to a real affection, A genuine mark of grace.
- 5:00It's a necessary part of true faith.
- 5:02But then Paul immediately grounds that human action in
- 5:05something that came before it. Yes, the divine side, those who
- 5:08are called according to His purpose.
- 5:10And that relationship is so helpful for anyone who's
- 5:13questioning their assurance. Because if your feelings of love
- 5:17for God go up and down, and they do, where do you plant your
- 5:20feet? The sources make it clear that
- 5:22our love for God is the fruit of His prior calling.
- 5:26It's the effect, not the cause of God's eternal decision.
- 5:30So your assurance doesn't rest on how strong your love feels
- 5:33today. It rests on the certainty of
- 5:35God's objective initiating act, His eternal purpose.
- 5:39He chose you and called you first, and that calling
- 5:42guarantees everything else that follows.
- 5:44OK, that brings us to the promise itself, the good.
- 5:48If all things includes famine and tribulation, then the good
- 5:51cannot possibly mean worldly comfort.
- 5:53Or getting a better job. Or having an easy life.
- 5:56Right. If you define good that way,
- 5:58this verse looks false for a lot of believers throughout history
- 6:01and even today. And that is the exact
- 6:03theological mistake we have to avoid.
- 6:05When someone takes on a shallow, material idea of good, they're
- 6:08forced to conclude God is feeling them whenever life gets
- 6:11hard. But Paul corrects that right
- 6:13away. He does.
- 6:14He immediately defines what the actual good is in the next two
- 6:17verses, 29 and 30. So what is God's non negotiable
- 6:21definition of the good that He's working all things toward?
- 6:23The highest good is conformity to the image of Christ and in
- 6:27the end, glorification. That is God's stated eternal
- 6:32goal for His people. The good is all about becoming
- 6:36like Jesus, who is the first born among many brothers.
- 6:39So the suffering we go through, the all things, they aren't some
- 6:43detour from God's plan. Not at all.
- 6:45They're actually the tools He's using, the instruments of
- 6:48refinement to chisel us into the likeness of His Son.
- 6:51That's it. So when suffering shows up, the
- 6:54believer who is anchored in this doctrine knows that this trial
- 6:57is serving a purpose far greater than immediate comfort.
- 7:01The purpose is becoming like Christ.
- 7:04That lifts the doctrine of Providence out of just shallow
- 7:07optimism. It does.
- 7:08It becomes a deep assurance that even pain is constructive when
- 7:11it's in the hands of a loving God.
- 7:12And this eternal purpose gets its logical guarantee in verses
- 7:1529 and 30, what everyone calls the golden chain of salvation.
- 7:19Paul uses this really tight grammatical structure.
- 7:22Those whom he also to show that the group of people he starts
- 7:26with at the beginning is the very same group that gets
- 7:28glorified at the end. Not one person is lost.
- 7:31The structure is designed to show the absolute certainty of
- 7:34God's action across all of time, from eternity past to eternity
- 7:38future, and it all begins with foreknowledge.
- 7:41OK, now the common popular idea of foreknowledge is that God
- 7:45just, you know, looked into the future, saw who would freely
- 7:48choose him, and then he chose them based on that.
- 7:51But our sources really insist on a key doctrinal distinction
- 7:56here. And they're right to.
- 7:58In the Bible, foreknowledge isn't just God having foresight
- 8:01of what people will do. It refers to God's prior
- 8:04intimate, loving choice of specific persons.
- 8:06It's relational. Like how the Old Testament talks
- 8:08about God knowing Israel. Yes, or knowing the prophets
- 8:12before they were born. It's a covenantal term.
- 8:14So to be foreknown isn't just to be known about, but to be set
- 8:17apart in covenantal love. Precisely.
- 8:20It's God setting His love upon particular people, choosing them
- 8:24before they even existed or did anything.
- 8:27That act of love is what precedes and produces every
- 8:30other link in the chain. It's the starting point of our
- 8:33assurance. So from that foundational loving
- 8:36choice, you get linked to predestination.
- 8:38What's the specific goal of that?
- 8:41Predestination in this context is defined by its result, a
- 8:45loving determination that these chosen sinners will be remade,
- 8:48to be conformed to the image of His Son.
- 8:51The theological goal is adoption.
- 8:53The practical goal is Christlikeness.
- 8:56It reminds you that the point of election isn't just about
- 8:58escaping hell. It's about resembling the Son of
- 9:00God. And that makes our
- 9:01sanctification, our growth and holiness, central to God's
- 9:04eternal plan, not just some afterthought which means us to
- 9:07link 3 effectual calling. And here we really need to
- 9:10separate the general call of the gospel from what Paul is talking
- 9:13about. That's a key distinction.
- 9:14The general no gospel call goes out to everyone.
- 9:17All are invited to repent and believe, but the effectual call
- 9:20is a successful inner work of the Spirit.
- 9:23How would you describe the difference?
- 9:26Think of it like a public announcement broadcast over a
- 9:28city. Many people will just ignore it,
- 9:31but the effectual call is like a personal successful summons that
- 9:35ensures the person responds because it changes their heart
- 9:39and draws them to. Faith so this effectual calling
- 9:42is guaranteed to work. It is because it's guaranteed by
- 9:45the foreknowledge and predestination that came before
- 9:47it. It's the mechanism that brings
- 9:49the eternal decree into our reality, into time.
- 9:53It's the Spirit of God bringing a person from spiritual death to
- 9:57life. And that leads directly into
- 9:59link 4 justification. God's legal once for all verdict
- 10:03of righteousness. A critical link.
- 10:05This is the legal declaration that the Sinner is now righteous
- 10:08before God, not based on their own merit, but based entirely on
- 10:12the imputed righteousness of Christ received by faith alone.
- 10:15It settles the legal standing immediately and forever.
- 10:18Which is why it guarantees the chain will continue.
- 10:20And then finally, link 5 glorification.
- 10:24This is the end goal and the way Paul writes it is just stunning.
- 10:27He puts it in the past tense. Those whom he justified, he also
- 10:31glorified. This is something that's still
- 10:34in the future for us as believers.
- 10:36The resurrection body, perfect holiness, eternal life.
- 10:38But Paul speaks of it as if it's already happened.
- 10:41He does, and he does that to underline the absolute certainty
- 10:44of it in God's mind and in His eternal decree.
- 10:47So the gap between our justification now and our
- 10:50glorification then might be filled with decades of trials
- 10:54and sin and suffering. But in God's sight, it's a done
- 10:57deal. If God decreed it and He started
- 10:59it, He is guaranteed to finish it.
- 11:01That golden chain promises that not one single justified person
- 11:05will fail to be glorified. And that's the first lock on the
- 11:08safety deposit box, the guarantee of the destination.
- 11:10Because of God's planning, it sets up the theological why.
- 11:13And that leads us perfectly into the second lock, which gets into
- 11:16the legal How? So after establishing this
- 11:18amazing, unbreakable chain of God's plan, Paul immediately
- 11:22pivots to the judicial side of things versus 31 to 34.
- 11:26Change the scene. We're out of God's eternal
- 11:28counsel and we're now in a courtroom where the believer
- 11:31status is being challenged. He opens with this rhetorical
- 11:34challenge in verse 31. What then shall we say to these
- 11:37things? If God is for us, who can be
- 11:41against us? And that, if God is for us,
- 11:44isn't introducing any doubt. It's setting up a premise based
- 11:47on everything he just said. Right.
- 11:48Since God did all that in the golden chain, He is clearly for
- 11:52us. So the question becomes, who can
- 11:54possibly stand against that purpose and succeed?
- 11:57Of course enemies exist. Our own sin, the world Satan.
- 12:01Sure, but Paul makes them all relative.
- 12:03If the Supreme Judge of the Universe has already declared
- 12:05his stance in favor of the accused, then the accusers don't
- 12:08have a leg to stand on. Our assurance is rooted in God's
- 12:11objective position toward us, which was established in our
- 12:14justification. And this brings us to the solid
- 12:17proof that God is for us. The cross.
- 12:19Paul uses this airtight logic, the argument from the greater to
- 12:22the lesser. He says he who did not spare his
- 12:24own son, but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with
- 12:28him graciously give us all things?
- 12:30That logic is so comforting. Think about the weight of the
- 12:33greater gift. The sources point out how he
- 12:36says his own son to stress the incomparable value of the
- 12:39sacrifice. It's a deliberate echo of
- 12:42Abraham and Isaac. It is but where Abraham was
- 12:45stopped from sacrificing his son, the father actually went
- 12:48through with it. God paid the highest price
- 12:50imaginable. He gave up His own Son to the
- 12:52cross to secure our redemption. That was the greater act.
- 12:56And so the argument is, if God did the most costly, painful,
- 13:00difficult thing possible to get our salvation started, the
- 13:03cross, it is completely unthinkable that he would then
- 13:07fail to provide the lesser gifts needed to keep us going and
- 13:11bring us to the end. And the lesser gifts are
- 13:13everything we need for sanctification, for
- 13:15preservation, for final glory. Everything.
- 13:18The cross is the unanswerable historical guarantee that God
- 13:22will not abandon his saving work halfway through.
- 13:25If God spared nothing for our justification, He will surely
- 13:28spare nothing for our sanctification.
- 13:29The courtroom scene then gets more intense in verse 33.
- 13:32Who shall bring any charge against God's elect?
- 13:35And that charge could come from anywhere.
- 13:37The world, Satan, the accuser. Or maybe the worst of all, our
- 13:41own guilty contents pointing out our real, actual failures.
- 13:45And Paul's answer doesn't deny the sin.
- 13:47Not at all. It just overrides the charges by
- 13:50appealing to the highest court in existence.
- 13:52The answer is it is God who justifies.
- 13:55The whole defense rests on the judge's own prior verdict.
- 13:59Yes, and because justification is a sovereign legal decree from
- 14:03the only court that matters, there is no higher Court of
- 14:06Appeal. If God, the perfect Judge,
- 14:09declares you righteous in Christ, then no created being,
- 14:13no demon, no self accusation can successfully overturn that
- 14:16verdict. The legal case is closed
- 14:18forever. That should just remove the fear
- 14:20of condemnation that can paralyze A believer.
- 14:23If God has declared you righteous because of Christ's
- 14:25work, then living in constant fear of judgment is like you're
- 14:28questioning God's own final. It is.
- 14:30It grounds you in the objective reality of imputed
- 14:33righteousness, not your performance.
- 14:35Your assurance moves from anxiety about how you're doing
- 14:38to a forensic certainty. And Paul takes it even one step
- 14:41further. In verse 34 he asks who is to
- 14:43condemn? And the answer isn't just that
- 14:46God justified us, but that Christ's own work is this
- 14:49impregnable bulwark, as our sources call it, against any
- 14:53condemnation. He gives 4 aspects of Christ's
- 14:56ministry that guarantee our security.
- 14:59These four things basically summarize the whole gospel, and
- 15:02they dismantle any lingering fear of judgement.
- 15:04OK, so the first one is the foundation.
- 15:06Christ died. The penalty for our sin was paid
- 15:09in full. The debt is gone.
- 15:12Condemnation requires a payment, but the payment has been made.
- 15:15But a dead savior isn't enough for our assurance, no?
- 15:19So the second reality is he was raised.
- 15:22The resurrection is the Father's public statement that the
- 15:25sacrifice was accepted, the payment was enough, and the
- 15:27victory over sin and death is complete.
- 15:29The justification that was secured by his death is
- 15:32validated by his life. Right.
- 15:33And those two points cover what he did historically.
- 15:36The next two are about what he's doing right now to maintain that
- 15:40status for us. The third reality he reigns.
- 15:43He is at the right hand of God. This is his position of supreme
- 15:46authority. He is ruling over everything for
- 15:48the sake of his people. He's not passive.
- 15:51He is actively managing the universe to make sure those he
- 15:54died for are secure. And 4th And this is maybe the
- 15:57most comforting part for a struggling believer.
- 16:00He intercedes for us. This is his ongoing work as our
- 16:04priest. This is huge.
- 16:06This is where we see Christ as our perpetual advocate.
- 16:09So when the accuser points out our daily failures, our current
- 16:12weaknesses are shaky faith. Which he does.
- 16:14All the time Christ points to the effectiveness of His
- 16:17finished work and pleads His own blood on our behalf.
- 16:21He is constantly sustaining the verdict of righteousness that
- 16:23God declared. He guarantees that the
- 16:25justification sticks. So condemnation is impossible,
- 16:28not just because Christ died, but because he lives for us,
- 16:30actively keeping our status secure.
- 16:33And that is the second lock on the deposit box.
- 16:35The legal certainty, our ownership is not in dispute.
- 16:38We've gone from God's eternal plan to the legal reality
- 16:42secured by Christ. And now Paul takes all of this
- 16:45certainty and applies it to the arena where it gets tested the
- 16:49most, the messy reality of life and suffering.
- 16:52Anchor 3. This takes us right onto the
- 16:55battlefield of the Christian life.
- 16:57Paul knows that having a theological security is one
- 17:00thing, but feeling secure when you're, I don't know, facing
- 17:02persecution or losing your job is something else entirely.
- 17:06So he hits these painful things head on in verse 35.
- 17:09He asks the critical question, Who shall separate us from the
- 17:12love of Christ? And it's so helpful that he asks
- 17:15about Christ's love for us. That's the key for assurance,
- 17:18our love for Christ. While it goes up and down, we
- 17:20have moments of real devotion and moments of coldness.
- 17:23But Christ's love for his people is constant.
- 17:26It's stable. It's anchored in His eternal
- 17:29purpose. And then he lists this catalog
- 17:31of frankly brutal afflictions. Shall tribulation or distress,
- 17:35or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword?
- 17:39This isn't a list of small annoyances.
- 17:41No, these are existential threats.
- 17:43Paul absolutely refuses to sanitize the Christian life or
- 17:47promise that we won't suffer. Why does he list such severe
- 17:50physical dangers? He's grounding the assurance in
- 17:53the harshest possible circumstances.
- 17:55If Christ's love can hold you fast even when you're facing
- 17:59death by sword or actual starvation, it can certainly
- 18:02hold you through your lesser anxieties.
- 18:04He uses the worst case scenario to prove the bond is durable.
- 18:08And then to really drive the point home that this suffering
- 18:11is normal, he quotes from Psalm 44.
- 18:14He does for your sake. We are being killed all the day
- 18:17long. We are regarded as sheep to be
- 18:19slaughtered. That citation is so important
- 18:22for context. It creates this historical
- 18:24continuity. God's people, going all the way
- 18:26back to Israel, have always been a suffering people.
- 18:29Often they suffer because of their relationship with God, not
- 18:32in spite of it. Which is a direct contradiction
- 18:34to any idea that God's favor means you'll have an easy life.
- 18:38Suffering and God's love are not mutually exclusive.
- 18:41So the immediate answer to his question about separation is a
- 18:45powerful no. But his statement in verse 37
- 18:48goes way beyond just being preserved.
- 18:50He says no and all these things. We are more than conquerors
- 18:53through Him who loved us. More than conquerors?
- 18:57How can a sheep being led to slaughter be considered more
- 19:00than a conqueror? It sounds like a contradiction.
- 19:02It does, unless victory is defined differently.
- 19:06The victory isn't avoiding the trial, it's that God
- 19:08successfully harnesses the trial.
- 19:10The very circumstances that were meant to destroy you are somehow
- 19:14twisted and used by God to bring about your final good.
- 19:17Which is Christlikeness and glorification as he said back in
- 19:20verse 20. 8 Right. So the hostile events become the
- 19:22very stage where the invincible nature of Christ's love is put
- 19:26on display. The world intends these things
- 19:29to separate us, but Christ uses them to bind us closer to Him.
- 19:32And the means of this conquering is specified through Him who
- 19:36loved us. That moves the focus away from
- 19:38our own strength or our own effort.
- 19:39It has to. That's the anchor.
- 19:42Our ability to get through suffering and even to gain from
- 19:45it isn't rooted in our spiritual grit.
- 19:47It's rooted in the fact that Christ's prior unchanging love
- 19:51is holding us fast. So when everything else is
- 19:53stripped away, the one thing that's left is Christ's active
- 19:57love keeping us secure. We aren't strong enough to
- 20:00conquer the world, but Christ is strong enough to conquer the
- 20:03world and keep us in it. And now Paul gives his final
- 20:05exhaustive list of threats. He starts with this definitive
- 20:08statement of his own confidence. I am sure he's about to leave no
- 20:13corner of reality unexplored to prove that nothing can break
- 20:16this bond. He starts by covering the whole
- 20:18timeline of our existence, both temporal and existential
- 20:21threats, neither death nor life. Death is the ultimate fear, the
- 20:25great separation. Life is all the daily pressures
- 20:28and temptations and distractions that can wear away at your
- 20:31faith. So neither the final moment nor
- 20:33the daily grind can separate us, correct?
- 20:35Then he covers time itself, nor things present, nor things to
- 20:39come. That covers our immediate
- 20:40anxieties and all our fears about the future, the whole
- 20:43timeline. And then he moves into the
- 20:44spiritual and cosmic realm, the realm of created beings and
- 20:48authority. He lists neither angels, nor
- 20:50rulers, nor powers, nor height, nor depth.
- 20:53That's a powerful, systematic dismissal of everything.
- 20:56It is angels and rulers covers the spiritual hierarchies, good
- 21:00or evil, demonic forces aligned against us.
- 21:03Powers could be earthly or spiritual authorities, and
- 21:06height nor depth is often seen as the whole cosmos, every
- 21:08spatial dimension you can imagine, from the heights of
- 21:11heaven to the depths of the grave or despair.
- 21:13The point is that every single created thing, no matter how
- 21:17great it seems, is under the control of Christ, who is at
- 21:20God's right hand interceding for us.
- 21:22And then Paul just slams the door shut with the universal
- 21:24summary in verse 39. Nor anything else in all
- 21:27creation. That phrase?
- 21:28That's the capstone that makes the list completely exhaustive.
- 21:31Why is that phrase so absolute and guaranteeing our security?
- 21:35Because the only only thing that stands outside of all creation
- 21:38is the Creator himself. And since Paul just listed every
- 21:42category of created thing he could think of, every power,
- 21:45every time, every dimension, he concludes that nothing created
- 21:49has the authority or the ability to break the bond that got
- 21:52himself made in Christ. The bond is secure against the
- 21:55entire universe, yes, and this all leads to the final
- 21:59specification, the precise location of this unbreakable
- 22:02bond. The inseparable love is located
- 22:04in Christ Jesus our Lord. Which reminds you, the listener,
- 22:07that this isn't some general vague feeling of divine goodwill
- 22:11that's just out there in the cosmos.
- 22:13Not at all. This is the specific covenant
- 22:16love of God, the love of the Golden Chain, and the courtroom
- 22:19verdict. And it's only experienced by
- 22:21those who are united to Him by faith.
- 22:22The security is absolute because it's anchored completely and
- 22:26only in God's eternal decree, and Christ's finished an ongoing
- 22:30work. And not in the believers
- 22:32fluctuating faith or feelings. We've now completed this deep
- 22:35dive into Romans 8.2839. Paul built this magnificent
- 22:40argument to ground our assurance not in our shifting internal
- 22:43experience, but in the fixed, objective facts of God's work.
- 22:46Right. So to summarize Paul's
- 22:48systematic approach, let's go back to that picture of the
- 22:50safety deposit box guaranteed by the three unbreachable locks.
- 22:54Lock number one was the certainty of God's eternal
- 22:56purpose, what we called the golden chain.
- 22:58That's verses 28 to 30. It stretches from foreknowledge
- 23:02all the way to glorification, and it guarantees the
- 23:04destination by showing that God started the work and He will not
- 23:08fail to finish it. Lock number 2 was the certainty
- 23:10of God's irrevocable verdict in Christ.
- 23:13That was verses 31 to 34. This established that our
- 23:16justification is a final legal sentence that no accuser,
- 23:20earthly or spiritual, can ever overturn.
- 23:22It was sealed by the cross, and it's maintained by Christ's
- 23:25current intercession at the right hand of God.
- 23:27And lock #3 was the certainty of God's inseparable covenant love.
- 23:31In verses 75 to 39, this lock proves that no created force, no
- 23:37suffering, no time, no spiritual authority can break the saving
- 23:41bond that was forged in Christ Jesus our Lord.
- 23:44The whole structure of Romans 8 delivers this logical settled
- 23:47certainty. The chapter begins with no
- 23:49condemnation in verse one. And it concludes with no
- 23:52separation in verse 30. 9 perfect bookends.
- 23:54They are now for a final thought to take with you.
- 23:57We spent a good bit of time on that courtroom scene, especially
- 24:00verse 34, which grounds our security in Christ's ongoing
- 24:03work of intercession. The reality that the reigning
- 24:06sacrificial Son of God is pleading His perfect sacrifice
- 24:09on your behalf is a current active truth.
- 24:12It's happening right now. So consider this How should that
- 24:15objective assurance practically change the way you pray about
- 24:17your own persistent spiritual weakness and your daily sins?
- 24:20That's a. Good question.
- 24:21Do you pray believing Christ's intercession has already
- 24:24guaranteed your hearing and your acceptance before the Father?
- 24:28Or do you still come to God as though you first have to make
- 24:30yourself acceptable before you'll listen?
- 24:33That's a critical challenge to make our subjective practice
- 24:36line up with that objective reality.
- 24:38Thank you for sharing your sources with us and letting us
- 24:41unpack the three certainties of assurance in Romans 8.
- 24:44We hope this deep dive brings you a settled confidence.
- 24:47And we invite you back next time for another systematic look at
- 24:50the doctrines that anchor Christian thought.
