- 0:00Speaker 1: This is The Bad Hire, the show with the best
- 0:02Speaker 1: stories about the worst employees.
- 0:05Speaker 2: We fired him.
- 0:05Speaker 3: Of course, people are crazy. It's like an hr nightmare. Right.
- 0:09Speaker 4: One bad hire stole all of it crazy stuff.
- 0:13Speaker 2: She got what she deserved.
- 0:15Speaker 5: Oh.
- 0:16Speaker 1: I'm your host, Ken Monroe, and every week we dive
- 0:19Speaker 1: into real life stories from the wild world of work
- 0:23Speaker 1: and what can happen when the wrong person gets the job.
- 0:27Speaker 1: These stories aren't just crazy when they are cautionary tales
- 0:30Speaker 1: about lessons learned the hard way. Let's get started.
- 0:35Speaker 4: Hey, welcome back to the podcast The Bad Hire.
- 0:39Speaker 3: Emma Morgan, Glad to have you guys with us.
- 0:41Speaker 2: Glad to be here.
- 0:41Speaker 3: Good stuff.
- 0:42Speaker 4: I always always like it when you guys are here.
- 0:45Speaker 3: You make me laugh and good.
- 0:47Speaker 4: Emma brings me stories. They're heartbreaking and not today.
- 0:53Speaker 3: Okay, good, I think.
- 0:54Speaker 4: I'm hoping you. Oh yeah, no promise.
- 0:58Speaker 5: I can never tell anymore. Sometimes as I share them
- 1:00Speaker 5: and think they're not that bad, and then yeah, and
- 1:02Speaker 5: then and then you're like, I didn't like that.
- 1:05Speaker 3: So we do have some stories today, which is which
- 1:06Speaker 3: is fun. I'm excited about it.
- 1:08Speaker 4: Just a reminder, we have the ten thousand dollars contest.
- 1:11Speaker 4: I know that we're running some ads and doing some
- 1:12Speaker 4: email and doing some things to get the word out
- 1:14Speaker 4: to recruiters and town acquisitions specialists who have a lot
- 1:19Speaker 4: of these recruiting stories. It seems like we hear or
- 1:22Speaker 4: read a lot of stories from people who are actually
- 1:25Speaker 4: the coworkers.
- 1:26Speaker 3: Yeah, like that was like a really big.
- 1:28Speaker 4: Yeah, Like I guess they experienced the bad hire.
- 1:30Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah for sure, which is you.
- 1:33Speaker 4: Know, kind of interesting to think about the you know
- 1:35Speaker 4: when when someone does make a bad hire, its ripples, Yeah,
- 1:41Speaker 4: and you can tell that affects the other people.
- 1:44Speaker 3: In fact, I have a story today as I was
- 1:46Speaker 3: just reading through it.
- 1:46Speaker 4: It was about someone who knew it was a bad hire,
- 1:49Speaker 4: you know, is worker who knew before they hired them.
- 1:52Speaker 2: Yeah, that's bad h Yeah. So and sometimes the interview
- 1:56Speaker 2: process is very enlightening, you know, for sure.
- 1:59Speaker 4: But so there's a ten thousand our contest. If you
- 2:02Speaker 4: submit a story to us online at our website, the
- 2:05Speaker 4: badhire dot Com.
- 2:06Speaker 3: You go there and check it.
- 2:07Speaker 4: Out best story of the season. I think there's that's
- 2:12Speaker 4: like half the year. Best story of the season will
- 2:15Speaker 4: be selected and win ten thousand dollars. So we think
- 2:19Speaker 4: bad higher stories are valuable. All right, so before we uh,
- 2:26Speaker 4: before we go, I think I got what order?
- 2:29Speaker 3: Are we going here?
- 2:29Speaker 2: I think we're going Yeah, it doesn't matter, all right, Yeah, okay,
- 2:34Speaker 2: we can go online.
- 2:34Speaker 3: All right, here it is.
- 2:35Speaker 4: I once had an employee warn me not to hire
- 2:39Speaker 4: a candidate. Let's call him Bill.
- 2:41Speaker 3: I always like that.
- 2:41Speaker 4: When they say let's yeah, they always let call him Bill.
- 2:44Speaker 3: It's always.
- 2:46Speaker 4: She told me Bill rented from her and would sometimes
- 2:49Speaker 4: show up at his neighbor's house. Oh already naked. Oh
- 2:55Speaker 4: oh okay, and here's the kicker. That neighbor actually worked
- 3:01Speaker 4: in my store. So she was saying, please, do not
- 3:04Speaker 4: bring this guy in here. But my store manager insisted
- 3:07Speaker 4: we go through with it. He wouldn't take no for
- 3:09Speaker 4: an answer, so we hired Bill, and right away things
- 3:12Speaker 4: got strange. He started creating drama, convinced people were after
- 3:18Speaker 4: him just because they said hello when they walked by.
- 3:21Speaker 4: A simple high Bill would send him spiraling. He was
- 3:28Speaker 4: constantly stirring up conflict and making the workplace uncomfortable for
- 3:31Speaker 4: everyone around it. In the end, all of that chaos
- 3:34Speaker 4: caught up to him and they terminated because of the
- 3:37Speaker 4: issues in the constant drama he was creating. He was
- 3:40Speaker 4: creating drama in his neighbor's yard.
- 3:43Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 3:44Speaker 4: Sometimes you can see the red flags waving before someone
- 3:47Speaker 4: is even hired, and if you ignore them, you'll almost
- 3:51Speaker 4: always regret it.
- 3:53Speaker 5: Sounds like he needed to be if you were in
- 3:56Speaker 5: the therapist office and I wonder I sto were working.
- 4:00Speaker 2: Did they run a background check on him? Like is
- 4:02Speaker 2: there a public nudity like charge on there? Or like
- 4:05Speaker 2: is he a pedophile?
- 4:07Speaker 5: Like? Yeah, why didn't the neighbor report it all?
- 4:09Speaker 2: Does he have a sex offender? Like?
- 4:12Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 4:12Speaker 4: It seems like going to someone's house naked would have
- 4:16Speaker 4: been Yeah, if you told the manager, hey, listen, he
- 4:19Speaker 4: showed up naked one of your coat to one of
- 4:22Speaker 4: my co workers who works here, Yeah, you would be like, no,
- 4:25Speaker 4: he would just pass.
- 4:27Speaker 2: Yeah right, okay, super interesting. It's like they made mistakes
- 4:30Speaker 2: more so than yeah.
- 4:33Speaker 3: Yeah right.
- 4:35Speaker 4: Well, the managers are always like, I need somebody, and
- 4:37Speaker 4: need someone even now, I'll take anyone.
- 4:40Speaker 3: Yeah, Sometimes ticking anyone's not a great strategy. Right here,
- 4:44Speaker 3: here's one.
- 4:48Speaker 4: On our HR team, we cover a lot of cities,
- 4:51Speaker 4: and let me tell you, some of the most interesting
- 4:54Speaker 4: stories come out of Florida.
- 4:57Speaker 2: Man, I believe.
- 4:59Speaker 4: I believe if it's where I where I grew up,
- 5:02Speaker 4: I'm a careful I believe it. One case that still
- 5:07Speaker 4: makes me shake my head involved a woman who decided
- 5:11Speaker 4: the best way to avoid work was just to sit
- 5:14Speaker 4: in her car all day. Oh my god, not clock out,
- 5:18Speaker 4: not calling sick, just hanging out in the parking lot
- 5:21Speaker 4: like that counted as being on the job.
- 5:25Speaker 3: When she needed to.
- 5:26Speaker 4: Use the restroom instead of walking back inside, she literally
- 5:31Speaker 4: just did it next to the car in our parking lot.
- 5:37Speaker 2: No way.
- 5:38Speaker 4: Unfortunately for her, coworker happened to arrive late that day
- 5:42Speaker 4: and saw the whole thing. He went straight to HR
- 5:45Speaker 4: to report it, and when we checked the cameras, sure enough,
- 5:50Speaker 4: the footage confirmed everything. When we confronted her, she tried
- 5:53Speaker 4: to play it all, saying, how do you.
- 5:55Speaker 5: Know it was even me?
- 5:57Speaker 2: Girl? Plead it could have been.
- 5:59Speaker 5: Anyone you knew, you knew, Yes, we.
- 6:03Speaker 4: The workers said, those those face tattoos gave you away.
- 6:08Speaker 2: Oh okay, almost like.
- 6:10Speaker 4: That a reminder HR doesn't get paid merely enough for
- 6:15Speaker 4: what they deal with.
- 6:16Speaker 2: No, kid, I can't even imagine that's going.
- 6:20Speaker 3: That's like the other side of HR.
- 6:22Speaker 4: Right, that's like you got the recruiting and talent, you're
- 6:24Speaker 4: trying to get great people in. Yeah, then you got
- 6:27Speaker 4: the whole set of HR that's dealing with the consequences
- 6:30Speaker 4: of a bad hire or somebody got the rails and
- 6:32Speaker 4: they're you know, HR is constantly trying to Yeah, like
- 6:35Speaker 4: we have the pieces, and.
- 6:37Speaker 2: We've had people who have like clocked in and stay
- 6:39Speaker 2: in their car and like the parking lot here, but
- 6:41Speaker 2: nothing like that, Like I mean, I'm sure they at
- 6:43Speaker 2: least came up to use about their It's definitely yeah,
- 6:46Speaker 2: that was crazy.
- 6:47Speaker 1: Before we dive back into the chaos on the bad hire.
- 6:50Speaker 1: This episode is brought to you by b checks. Hiring
- 6:53Speaker 1: shouldn't feel like rolling the dice. Background checks should come

- 7:28Speaker 1: ex dot io.
- 7:31Speaker 4: Uh, one more and then I'll turn ittive you. I
- 7:34Speaker 4: once hired a young woman in retail who at first
- 7:36Speaker 4: seemed fine. Showed up on time, smile to customers, nothing unusual,
- 7:43Speaker 4: But pretty quickly things started.
- 7:44Speaker 3: To look off.
- 7:46Speaker 4: Out of nowhere. She started racking up faulty returns. I've
- 7:51Speaker 4: never been in retail, Yeah, but I assume that's I
- 7:55Speaker 4: don't know, twelve of them in a single week down
- 7:58Speaker 4: retail familiar, So they explained, Now, in retail, you expect
- 8:02Speaker 4: the occasional return, but twelve in a week that's a
- 8:06Speaker 4: giant red flag. So I asked her what happened to
- 8:08Speaker 4: all those products? She looked me, straightened and said, threw
- 8:12Speaker 4: them away, Just tossed brand new merchandise in the tress.
- 8:16Speaker 3: That didn't sit right. But I held my tongue for
- 8:18Speaker 3: the moment.
- 8:19Speaker 4: Then the very next day I saw her wearing one
- 8:22Speaker 4: of the items.
- 8:24Speaker 2: You're either like, she's just not there or she's ceiling right. Yeah, osba, but.
- 8:30Speaker 4: You steel something that did were gonna wear?
- 8:33Speaker 2: That's crazy? Oh, let's wear it outside of the store.
- 8:35Speaker 4: Like When I call her on it, she got flustered
- 8:37Speaker 4: and said her sister had bought it.
- 8:39Speaker 3: Before she worked there.
- 8:41Speaker 4: The problem that excuse only came out after she was hired.
- 8:46Speaker 4: The timeline didn't add up and her story fell apart,
- 8:48Speaker 4: so we fired her immediately, But.
- 8:50Speaker 3: The story didn't end there.
- 8:51Speaker 4: A few hours later, she actually came back arms full
- 8:54Speaker 4: of bags stuffed with the missing merchandise. She stood there
- 8:58Speaker 4: asking her if we'd give her job back if she
- 9:00Speaker 4: returned it all. We told her no, and just when
- 9:04Speaker 4: I thought I'd seen the last of her, she tried
- 9:07Speaker 4: to file for unemployment. That went nowhere the second. The second,
- 9:11Speaker 4: the real story came out, but it was a reminder
- 9:13Speaker 4: that sometimes the boldest thieves aren't the ones sneaking in
- 9:16Speaker 4: the back door. They're standing right in front of you,
- 9:19Speaker 4: smiling and hoping you won't notice the skirt they stole
- 9:22Speaker 4: off the rack yesterday.
- 9:25Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, I don't know.
- 9:28Speaker 3: I just think it's so how how how bold is it?
- 9:32Speaker 3: To like?
- 9:33Speaker 2: Bold is a great word to use, because I was
- 9:34Speaker 2: gonna say something else.
- 9:35Speaker 3: But great for the right.
- 9:38Speaker 4: I was gonna say exactly what you're thinking. Yeah, you know,
- 9:42Speaker 4: but I was just like, how do you how do
- 9:45Speaker 4: you uh, just to put it on and just walk
- 9:47Speaker 4: walk into the stores. Yeah, Uh, there's so often now
- 9:53Speaker 4: people will post themselves doing something. Yeah sometimes not a
- 9:59Speaker 4: way is legal but definitely not right, Yeah for sure.
- 10:04Speaker 4: And they post themselves and like be happy.
- 10:05Speaker 3: About it, you know, like hey, check it out.
- 10:08Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 10:08Speaker 3: And you know, here's what I did.
- 10:10Speaker 4: We had a somebody applying for a job here and
- 10:12Speaker 4: we went onto their we looked at some of their
- 10:16Speaker 4: social media and and we we'd made the job offer
- 10:22Speaker 4: and her social media had post. Somebody brought it to
- 10:27Speaker 4: her attention, and after we kind of.
- 10:30Speaker 2: Announced her, somebody was like that one girl that we
- 10:33Speaker 2: read about who looked up the girl beforehand, she was up.
- 10:36Speaker 4: It's like, hey, you know, it's like, hey, we announced
- 10:39Speaker 4: who's coming to work, and the who is she?
- 10:41Speaker 3: You know, and she's.
- 10:43Speaker 4: Got a a ring of friends where they're running in
- 10:46Speaker 4: the stores and stealing, and she's posting it and bragging
- 10:50Speaker 4: about their take.
- 10:52Speaker 2: Guys, don't do this please. Also, social media screens are
- 10:55Speaker 2: a real thing, we know because b checks offers them.
- 10:59Speaker 2: So let's not that guys, be smart. It's also like.
- 11:01Speaker 5: The people that post on Reddit and hey, I lied
- 11:04Speaker 5: on my resume. This is how I got away with.
- 11:06Speaker 2: Exactly how how to navigate like lying on a background check.
- 11:11Speaker 2: Don't talk about that online like h think you won't
- 11:16Speaker 2: get caught exactly because we read those stories right here
- 11:19Speaker 2: on the podcast. Anyways, I only have two stories today.
- 11:22Speaker 2: They're a little long, but let's dive right into them.
- 11:26Speaker 2: So the first one is my wife and I own
- 11:28Speaker 2: our own vocational rehabilitative counseling firm, especially in California's workers compensation.
- 11:36Speaker 2: That's mouthful. We had three offices in three counties. We're
- 11:41Speaker 2: basically employment experts. Didn't prevent us from making a horrible
- 11:44Speaker 2: hiring mistake though. We were looking for a front office
- 11:47Speaker 2: receptionist for our main office. We interviewed this one female
- 11:50Speaker 2: candidate that we will call Jane. My wife interviewed her
- 11:54Speaker 2: and then sent her to me for a separate interview.
- 11:56Speaker 2: I interviewed her for about an hour. I agree with
- 11:59Speaker 2: my wife that she was an excellent candidate, great personality,
- 12:02Speaker 2: very personal, professional, etc. We called references, which all checked out.
- 12:07Speaker 2: We decided to offer her the job, which she accepted.
- 12:10Speaker 2: On her first day, she was being trained by our
- 12:12Speaker 2: office manager at the front desk. I had just finished
- 12:14Speaker 2: with a client and walked up to her to the
- 12:16Speaker 2: front desk. I grabbed a stapler off the receptionist desk
- 12:19Speaker 2: to staple some papers for a client. Jane stated, very certainly,
- 12:23Speaker 2: what do you think you're doing. I was shocked. I
- 12:27Speaker 2: actually turned around, thinking she must be talking to someone else.
- 12:31Speaker 2: She stared at me. The client was waiting to see
- 12:33Speaker 2: what was going to happen. I ignored her and gave
- 12:35Speaker 2: the client his papers. After the client left, Jane continued,
- 12:39Speaker 2: don't take stuff off my desk without asking. I looked
- 12:43Speaker 2: at her for a moment and then walked into my
- 12:45Speaker 2: wife's office and asked you to call day.
- 12:48Speaker 3: Yes, ok.
- 12:50Speaker 2: Can you imagine like borrowing a stapler from somebody the
- 12:52Speaker 2: first day and they're like, don't take stuff off my desk.
- 12:54Speaker 2: What do you think? What do you think you're doing?
- 12:56Speaker 2: To the like the CEO of the company, Yes, what
- 13:00Speaker 2: do you do?
- 13:01Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 13:01Speaker 2: Okay, And to say that next time you come take
- 13:03Speaker 2: something off. Yeah, imagine being the client, off your guests, Yeah,
- 13:07Speaker 2: imagining the client. Yeah, imagine being the client too. You're like,
- 13:11Speaker 2: what the heck? So then he says, I walked into
- 13:14Speaker 2: my wife's office and asked her to call the office
- 13:16Speaker 2: manager into her office. The office manager had witnessed the exchange.
- 13:20Speaker 2: We discussed the situation. The office manager has experienced with
- 13:23Speaker 2: a similar issue, but much less intense. Apparently, Jade had
- 13:27Speaker 2: compulsive boundary and territory issues. We elected to get rid
- 13:31Speaker 2: of her. We had our bookkeeper cut a check right away.
- 13:35Speaker 2: I called her into my office. I asked her if
- 13:37Speaker 2: she thought her behavior was appropriate, considering I owned the
- 13:40Speaker 2: company and the client was present. Jane went into this
- 13:43Speaker 2: odd rationale that we hired her and gave her a desk.
- 13:46Speaker 2: It was her desk, and it wasn't right that anyone
- 13:49Speaker 2: should violate her space. I told her she was terminated.
- 13:53Speaker 2: I have her check for a full day's work, and
- 13:55Speaker 2: she left without incident. Considering our vast experience and vocational counseling,
- 13:59Speaker 2: my wife and I tried to figure out how we
- 14:01Speaker 2: could miss such a major personality fallow during too long interviews.
- 14:05Speaker 3: Yeah, that's I get.
- 14:06Speaker 2: That's interesting. Yeah, Oh I.
- 14:08Speaker 4: Remember heard that before, some type of personal the boundary thing.
- 14:12Speaker 2: Yeah, And I mean, I guess it's hard to test
- 14:14Speaker 2: an interview because you're interviewing them. You're not going to
- 14:16Speaker 2: touch her, you're not going to ask to see something
- 14:18Speaker 2: of hers, like you're keeping your space. I don't know.
- 14:22Speaker 3: Do you have any disorders?
- 14:24Speaker 2: Yeah? Are you compulsive in how anyway? No, I don't.
- 14:30Speaker 2: That's a crazy one. But at least it wasn't like violent,
- 14:33Speaker 2: like I feel like a lot of these are really violent,
- 14:34Speaker 2: and this one was just some yelling and get off
- 14:38Speaker 2: my stapler please.
- 14:38Speaker 3: I mean I get it. I mean I respect them.
- 14:42Speaker 4: We try to let people have their space, their desk,
- 14:45Speaker 4: you know, and that's yours.
- 14:46Speaker 2: And yeah, I don't think anybody's crimes.
- 14:48Speaker 5: Just so way you go about handling, don't say what
- 14:51Speaker 5: do you take you're doing?
- 14:52Speaker 2: Yeah, you can be like please don't touch my stapler please.
- 14:55Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 14:55Speaker 4: Maybe, or if it's like really bothersome for you, then
- 14:59Speaker 4: just put your stuff the way that you think would
- 15:01Speaker 4: be exactly.
- 15:02Speaker 3: Yeah. I don't know.
- 15:03Speaker 4: But day one, Yes, that's very fresh. Yeah, very bold
- 15:07Speaker 4: again bold, Yes, very bold.
- 15:09Speaker 2: This one was a different kind of bold though I'd
- 15:11Speaker 2: say yeah, yeah. Anyways, here's my second story for today.
- 15:14Speaker 2: Back then, our hiring process wasn't nearly as tight as
- 15:18Speaker 2: it should have been. We'd bring people on before the
- 15:20Speaker 2: background checks, criminal reports, and financial screenings were finished. It's
- 15:25Speaker 2: it's funny because this story is actually a call center
- 15:27Speaker 2: and they do financial screenings on them beforehand, so I
- 15:29Speaker 2: found that to be interesting. But also at the same time,
- 15:31Speaker 2: I can kind of understand not waiting for background scheck
- 15:34Speaker 2: to come back. If you're just a call center, kind
- 15:36Speaker 2: of can come but it doesn't clarify.
- 15:39Speaker 4: But it could be a financial business within money because
- 15:41Speaker 4: financial information for them money.
- 15:43Speaker 2: Yeah, it seemed fine at the time. Most people cleared
- 15:46Speaker 2: without an issue, but every once in a while you'd
- 15:48Speaker 2: roll the dice and land on a surprise. I remember
- 15:51Speaker 2: one case vividly. We just hired a young guy who
- 15:53Speaker 2: claimed he'd been freshly discharged from the military. He fit
- 15:56Speaker 2: in right away, hard working, respectful, the kind of person
- 15:59Speaker 2: you feel lucky to have on your team. For a
- 16:01Speaker 2: couple of weeks, everything seemed normal. Then one afternoon I
- 16:05Speaker 2: got a call that changed everything. A flat series voice
- 16:08Speaker 2: on the other end asked me, is he at his desk? Yes,
- 16:13Speaker 2: I said, cautiously, good. Don't leave him. Don't let him leave.
- 16:17Speaker 2: That's what they said, don't let him leave. That was it,
- 16:20Speaker 2: no explanation, just in order, and that was the whole exchange,
- 16:23Speaker 2: I guess on the phone. So I walked over to
- 16:25Speaker 2: his desk, hard starting to thump. I played a cool
- 16:28Speaker 2: and I leaned against his cubicle wall and launched into
- 16:30Speaker 2: a casual check in, Hey, how is everything going? Everything
- 16:33Speaker 2: making sense so far? Any questions? He smiled and answered polightly,
- 16:37Speaker 2: completely unaware that anything was off. Four minutes past the
- 16:41Speaker 2: the double doors of our call center swung open with
- 16:44Speaker 2: a heavy clang, and then in walked two military police
- 16:48Speaker 2: officers in full uniform. The whole room went silent, headset
- 16:54Speaker 2: slipped off keyboards, stop clicking the whole thing, and everybody
- 16:58Speaker 2: started staring at him. Without a word, they marched straight
- 17:01Speaker 2: over my new hire's face, drained of the colors as
- 17:04Speaker 2: they stood over him. You are now in custody of
- 17:07Speaker 2: being absent without leaf, one of the MPs firmly said yep,
- 17:12Speaker 2: pretty much before anyone could process it that he had
- 17:15Speaker 2: him on his feet, wrist cuffed and were escorting him out.
- 17:19Speaker 2: The call center was frozen in shock watching the scene unfold.
- 17:23Speaker 2: He didn't argue, he didn't even say a word, and
- 17:26Speaker 2: just like that, he was gone. We never saw him again,
- 17:28Speaker 2: no follow up, no explanations, just the memory of the day,
- 17:32Speaker 2: the military walking into our office.
- 17:34Speaker 3: There's no quiddy.
- 17:35Speaker 2: I know I'm like what did he think not show up?
- 17:40Speaker 2: And so they said they just had the memory of
- 17:42Speaker 2: the day of the military walked into their office and
- 17:44Speaker 2: hauled away one of our own. After that, let's just
- 17:47Speaker 2: say we waited for the background checks to clear before
- 17:49Speaker 2: giving anyone a desk.
- 17:50Speaker 5: This is funny to me because like I feel like
- 17:53Speaker 5: that was so dramatic, the marching.
- 17:56Speaker 2: Oh I know, and cleaning the doors open, like and
- 18:00Speaker 2: also is he at his desk?
- 18:01Speaker 5: Like yeah, like I say, is he there?
- 18:03Speaker 2: You don't leave him? And don't Also like he was like, yeah,
- 18:07Speaker 2: why wouldn't you say? This is like the militaris, right,
- 18:10Speaker 2: this is a military. We have a guy that you
- 18:13Speaker 2: guys have there. He's absent. We need to come get him,
- 18:16Speaker 2: just at his desk. Yeah some c I A.
- 18:20Speaker 4: Yeah, so there could be a reason why it was absent.
- 18:22Speaker 2: It's not yeah true, all right?
- 18:25Speaker 5: That was good?
- 18:26Speaker 2: Yeah, nice, Yeah, nobody died.
- 18:31Speaker 3: A cliffhanger for me.
- 18:31Speaker 4: I was like, like, you want another rest of the story, Like.
- 18:36Speaker 2: Yeah, what he do? I'might have to look this guy
- 18:38Speaker 2: up somehow. I don't know if.
- 18:41Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, I don't know. Maybe they don't kick
- 18:44Speaker 3: you off for.
- 18:45Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, what makes me think that it was
- 18:48Speaker 2: a financial company. Was this story was found on a
- 18:53Speaker 2: company's site of like the fifteen craziest hiring stories ever,
- 18:57Speaker 2: and it was a financial company. So maybe all how
- 19:00Speaker 2: to do with finances? Yeah, for sure? All right, once
- 19:05Speaker 2: you got for us today, Emma, Okay.
- 19:07Speaker 5: Ready, I think I have like three maybe three or
- 19:10Speaker 5: four I can't remember.
- 19:12Speaker 4: Well, we'll do them one in time. If it's good,
- 19:15Speaker 4: then we can progress to the next one.
- 19:16Speaker 2: Okay. So if not, you're do.
- 19:18Speaker 3: If it gets too dark, and I'll just calling it guins.
- 19:21Speaker 2: Okay, let's go.
- 19:25Speaker 5: I once had an employee who was a compulsive liar.
- 19:28Speaker 5: Some of the stories about this guy are and then
- 19:30Speaker 5: it has a couple of bullet points of.
- 19:32Speaker 2: Different lies that oh gosh.
- 19:34Speaker 5: When he first started, he was asked to just bring
- 19:37Speaker 5: in his ID documentation as part of the supporting documents.
- 19:41Speaker 5: He said he left it in his car, but would
- 19:42Speaker 5: go and get it. He left the office, came back
- 19:45Speaker 5: a short while later, and just at at his desk
- 19:47Speaker 5: and continued working. When he was asked about the ID
- 19:50Speaker 5: documentation later, he kind of just shrugged and said that
- 19:53Speaker 5: he went to go get it but found that his
- 19:55Speaker 5: card been stolen.
- 19:59Speaker 2: Oh my god, I feel like I've heard this excuse
- 20:02Speaker 2: before strolling car.
- 20:03Speaker 3: And I just can't and I just.
- 20:06Speaker 2: Yeah, what what else does want to do besides go
- 20:09Speaker 2: bit at your desk?
- 20:11Speaker 5: Uh? He would often make sure that he was the
- 20:14Speaker 5: last person to leave the office, and the next morning
- 20:16Speaker 5: he would make sure that there's a toothbrush displayed in
- 20:19Speaker 5: a glass on his desk to make us think that
- 20:21Speaker 5: he pulled an all night or working at the office.
- 20:24Speaker 5: That's a creative looks like he's a hard worker, right,
- 20:27Speaker 5: I put in so much time.
- 20:29Speaker 4: I used to know someone who sat their alarm at
- 20:31Speaker 4: three o'clock in the morning every night to get up
- 20:34Speaker 4: and send work emails. She would send a series of
- 20:37Speaker 4: work emails and go back to bed to make it
- 20:39Speaker 4: look like she was working at three o'clock in the morning.
- 20:41Speaker 5: He got caught stealing small change off of the boss's
- 20:45Speaker 5: desk and then tried to blame it on the cleaning lady. Oh,
- 20:49Speaker 5: he once bought pizza for the entire office. I don't
- 20:53Speaker 5: asked him why. He said that it was to celebrate
- 20:56Speaker 5: him being accepted to go study m I T in
- 20:58Speaker 5: two years time.
- 21:00Speaker 2: We looked it up.
- 21:01Speaker 5: Applications hadn't even been posted.
- 21:03Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm gonna say you can't.
- 21:07Speaker 5: Needless to say, he didn't make it through his three
- 21:09Speaker 5: month probationary period, and let's let go about three months
- 21:13Speaker 5: after he'd already left, his dad fall into the office
- 21:16Speaker 5: looking for him. Some time later we got fired.
- 21:20Speaker 2: Yeah, that's sad. He probably allowed to hiss died too.
- 21:25Speaker 5: Sometime later we got another batch of new employees. One
- 21:28Speaker 5: of them heard the stories and said that they had
- 21:30Speaker 5: worked that guy before, and at the previous job he
- 21:34Speaker 5: was at. He eventually had to be escorted out by
- 21:36Speaker 5: the police.
- 21:37Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, all these escorts like escorting people out
- 21:42Speaker 2: on cuffs and everything.
- 21:46Speaker 3: Crazy.
- 21:46Speaker 2: Okay, here's my name, all right. No one was good,
- 21:51Speaker 2: nobody was on a grill, nobody got nobody got.
- 21:55Speaker 5: In a bar fight un alive.
- 21:57Speaker 2: Yes, yeah, it's okay.
- 22:02Speaker 5: I've only been in the field for about four months now,
- 22:05Speaker 5: but this is my favorite petty incident. The morning shift
- 22:08Speaker 5: starts at five am. A lot of guys come in
- 22:11Speaker 5: a little early and sit in their cars doing what at, reading,
- 22:15Speaker 5: sleeping whatever. Apparently, guy, they separate these two people by
- 22:19Speaker 5: Guy A and Guy B.
- 22:21Speaker 2: No, nokay, yeah, thing lean and thing too.
- 22:25Speaker 5: Apparently, Guy A has a fancy European car in which
- 22:29Speaker 5: the headlights don't turn off. His explanation, not mine. Well,
- 22:33Speaker 5: guy B parks directly in front of him, like he
- 22:35Speaker 5: always does. He thought that his headlights were bs and
- 22:40Speaker 5: was becoming increasingly angry because Guy A won't turn his headlights, So,
- 22:45Speaker 5: instead of choosing to park somewhere else, Guy B began
- 22:48Speaker 5: parking at an angle with his headlights shining directly into
- 22:51Speaker 5: the window of Guy A. He did this for a
- 22:53Speaker 5: few days before then bringing in a taller truck so
- 22:57Speaker 5: that his headlights would just fully shine into the car
- 23:00Speaker 5: the other guy.
- 23:01Speaker 2: And it's very serious.
- 23:04Speaker 5: He saw this in the footage of our security.
- 23:06Speaker 3: Kit better car. Who does that guy think he is?
- 23:10Speaker 5: No one told me this was happening until a while
- 23:12Speaker 5: after this had been occurring, as I don't start it
- 23:15Speaker 5: by the am like everyone else does. When the operations
- 23:18Speaker 5: manager finally told me, I just burst out laughing because
- 23:21Speaker 5: I cannot believe that fifty year old men were acting
- 23:23Speaker 5: like this.
- 23:25Speaker 3: That's not what I had in my mind.
- 23:27Speaker 4: No, when you had to tell in this story this
- 23:29Speaker 4: whole time, I'm thinking a couple year olds.
- 23:32Speaker 2: Yeah, twenty year olds.
- 23:33Speaker 5: So we had Guy A take some pictures for documentation
- 23:37Speaker 5: and told Guy B to knock it off. And that's
- 23:40Speaker 5: when the last of that. And that has been the
- 23:42Speaker 5: last of that as far as I'm aware.
- 23:44Speaker 4: Okay, h are involved again, probably yes, solve the dispute.
- 23:50Speaker 2: I feel like he didn't even like even have to
- 23:52Speaker 2: tell two grown men not to like act like this either,
- 23:55Speaker 2: like just go park apart from each other day, I mean,
- 23:59Speaker 2: the whole.
- 24:00Speaker 4: Thing of going and getting I'm going to change cars.
- 24:02Speaker 3: I'm gonna go get my taller.
- 24:03Speaker 4: Yeah, just to think that all the way they're driving
- 24:06Speaker 4: it all the way.
- 24:06Speaker 5: Show him, well, so war look at my lights higher?
- 24:10Speaker 2: Why don't you just stay at home if you're just
- 24:11Speaker 2: sitting in your car sleeping anyways, just stay at almost
- 24:14Speaker 2: a little later, park somewhere else.
- 24:19Speaker 5: Yeah, no need to park in an angle and like
- 24:22Speaker 5: or you can bring go up to them and say, hey,
- 24:24Speaker 5: can you turn your head lights off? That's just but
- 24:27Speaker 5: also a petty pot I don't know. Okay, here's another one.
- 24:35Speaker 5: This is not an HR rep but sat next to
- 24:37Speaker 5: the bad employee. So this is one of the co workers.
- 24:40Speaker 2: We love.
- 24:41Speaker 5: This worked at a bat worked at a job that
- 24:43Speaker 5: required an FBI background check because it was a large
- 24:47Speaker 5: financial company. Your friends prints, list all contacts with police,
- 24:52Speaker 5: whether they resulted in charges or not.
- 24:53Speaker 2: Blah blah blah.
- 24:55Speaker 5: Basically, they only cared about financial crimes, so unless you
- 24:59Speaker 5: robbed someone, you were likely fine as long.
- 25:01Speaker 2: As she was okay, this is what it says.
- 25:04Speaker 5: Well, this guy started from day one. He was in
- 25:08Speaker 5: his cubicle having long conversations with his lawyer about his
- 25:11Speaker 5: upcoming drug drug trafficking trial. He loudly corrects his lawyer
- 25:15Speaker 5: with no, they said it was two kilos, but I
- 25:19Speaker 5: only had one and a half.
- 25:20Speaker 2: Oh okay, But to boost specific, what if what if
- 25:27Speaker 2: there's something special, what if there's a law you know,
- 25:29Speaker 2: in that state where that maybe I actually paid.
- 25:32Speaker 5: Maybe I picked this store because of this little line
- 25:35Speaker 5: right here. I thought you would, you would like this.
- 25:37Speaker 5: The check could take up to six months.
- 25:40Speaker 4: To complete, the background check.
- 25:42Speaker 5: Yeah yeah, and they would let you start working while
- 25:45Speaker 5: it was underway. So we were all waiting for that
- 25:47Speaker 5: to come back. Management her from employees what was going on,
- 25:50Speaker 5: and evidently had the FBI rush it. So four days
- 25:53Speaker 5: into two four days in two security guards and an
- 25:57Speaker 5: HI rep showed up at his desk and walk him up.
- 26:00Speaker 4: Well, the FBI checks are like mandated. Some legislators think
- 26:04Speaker 4: through the gold standard and but they mandate them in
- 26:08Speaker 4: they take it, you know, can take a long time. Yeah, disruptive,
- 26:13Speaker 4: you got to send people, you know, it's just commercial.
- 26:16Speaker 3: Commercial screening is.
- 26:19Speaker 2: Superiod story.
- 26:21Speaker 3: It's, you know, really good.
- 26:22Speaker 5: I pick this one because they mentioned the background checks specifically,
- 26:25Speaker 5: like sometimes they don't.
- 26:26Speaker 2: Yeah, met up in the story.
- 26:28Speaker 4: But but I see that where companies in the circumstances
- 26:33Speaker 4: will conduct it and then bring them on.
- 26:36Speaker 3: Yeah, because they can't wait.
- 26:38Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean they would never be able to hire
- 26:40Speaker 4: anybody because no one would wait around. Hey, you're going
- 26:44Speaker 4: work for six months when the background check is then
- 26:47Speaker 4: you'll be able.
- 26:47Speaker 3: To come to work.
- 26:48Speaker 4: Yeah, you know, I'm going to go to the donother job.
- 26:51Speaker 3: So that's what would have all.
- 26:53Speaker 5: Right about one more, it's kind of short, go for it.
- 26:57Speaker 5: Ask in the interview if he'd ever been convicted of
- 27:00Speaker 5: a crime, which is legal in my state and a
- 27:02Speaker 5: requirement of the job. He said no. We made an offer,
- 27:06Speaker 5: he accepted, and we read a background check.
- 27:08Speaker 2: It was four pages long.
- 27:11Speaker 5: Drug charges, assault charges, burglary charges. Basically if you can
- 27:15Speaker 5: think of it, this guy had done it. The crazy
- 27:17Speaker 5: thing is he knew he needed a clean record for
- 27:19Speaker 5: the job, and he knew we were going to run
- 27:21Speaker 5: a background check as he had to sign off on it,
- 27:24Speaker 5: but was still surprised and mad when we rejected the offer.
- 27:29Speaker 2: We took the offer back. He miss one percent of
- 27:32Speaker 2: the shots you don't take.
- 27:33Speaker 5: Yeah, that's right.
- 27:35Speaker 4: Or maybe maybe he tried to run some you know
- 27:38Speaker 4: named flukiness, trying to miss up his name when he applied,
- 27:41Speaker 4: or put something in where you maybe maybe he read
- 27:44Speaker 4: some reddit.
- 27:45Speaker 2: Artisy, Yeah, he was searching the forums before this one.
- 27:48Speaker 5: But I but I read that somebody did this before
- 27:51Speaker 5: and yeah.
- 27:51Speaker 4: It worked, you know, so you never know, but it does.
- 27:57Speaker 4: It shocks us all the time with people. Yeah, of
- 28:00Speaker 4: our clients, there's you know, vulnerable populations or kids, older parents,
- 28:05Speaker 4: people and you know that in the hospital or whatever.
- 28:08Speaker 3: And.
- 28:10Speaker 4: You see them apply and you go, I mean, this
- 28:12Speaker 4: isn't this isn't the place for you right yet? And
- 28:16Speaker 4: in the future, I know you've had some time, but
- 28:20Speaker 4: not you know, in the best situation, and you're probably
- 28:24Speaker 4: not gonna be able to get in. Sometimes even mandated by.
- 28:26Speaker 3: The government they can't work. You can't work there with
- 28:28Speaker 3: that kind of record.
- 28:28Speaker 4: So yeah, probably you're thinking when they apply, but they
- 28:33Speaker 4: read it, probably probably read some Reddit article.
- 28:36Speaker 3: Is that it?
- 28:37Speaker 2: That's so all nice?
- 28:38Speaker 4: This one very nice.
- 28:39Speaker 2: Yeah, good episode, guys like not, I'm not too bad.
- 28:43Speaker 5: I love these We're not any on a bad note?
- 28:45Speaker 5: Did I know?
- 28:47Speaker 3: Right?
- 28:47Speaker 4: I got to try to figure out why they like
- 28:49Speaker 4: say something cheerful of the way out because and it
- 28:53Speaker 4: just took us down a rabbit hole. Stories. Uh, you know,
- 28:57Speaker 4: I think a lot of these stories are are are
- 28:59Speaker 4: funny and hind site, you know, but the reality is
- 29:01Speaker 4: they create a lot of stress some people. Yeah, hr
- 29:04Speaker 4: people and you know the folks that are an human resources
- 29:07Speaker 4: or the recruiters are you know, and talent acquisition you
- 29:11Speaker 4: think about when you bring somebody on and you're you're
- 29:15Speaker 4: in talent acquisition and it's a bit like putting your
- 29:18Speaker 4: stamp of approval and so you know, it's just a
- 29:20Speaker 4: bit a bit taxing when you know one of your
- 29:24Speaker 4: hires is I assume brings a lot of stress to folks.
- 29:28Speaker 4: So but hopefully afterwards you can laugh about.
- 29:32Speaker 2: It for sure.
- 29:33Speaker 5: For sure.
