- 0:24So you're writing a book, The Fire is for You, and that's really focused on your journey.
- 0:29And when somebody chooses a title for a book, it always has a lot of meaning and significance to them.
- 0:34So as we go through your journey, The Fire is for You, what does that mean to you as a title and why did you choose it?
- 0:44But what does it mean to you as you go through all these inflection points in your life?
- 0:47For example, when you go through that title,
- 0:49point where you have your DUI, you go to your mom's pastor's house for the first time.
- 0:55Connect those dots for me.
- 0:57Great question.
- 0:57The fire is for you title.
- 0:59The book is not a book.
- 1:03It is about what happened and things that I've been through.
- 1:06The book is for you.
- 1:08The book is for the reader.
- 1:12The book is because every one of us, every one of us go through fires, right?
- 1:18So you just said like you have a business or you're chasing, we all do that, man.
- 1:23Like, man, I wanna build a great company.
- 1:25The church is a business.
- 1:26The church is a ministry, but it's a business.
- 1:29It is a it is a corporation.
- 1:31It has money coming in, money going out.
- 1:33You know, we've got I've got 50 full time employees, probably another 50 part time.
- 1:36And like the church is a business.
- 1:39You're growing a church.
- 1:40Yes, it's ministry.
- 1:41But there is this business.
- 1:42We have a department.
- 1:43We got to conform and abide by laws and all these things.
- 1:47So, you know, so Impact Church, my church, it's entrepreneurial, entrepreneur birthed out of a Bible study for the Arizona Cardinals.
- 1:55So the Arizona Cardinals football team, you know, started Bible study for the football team, eventually opened it to the public and the rest is history.
- 2:03So, yeah.
- 2:04Going back to your question, my church is flooded with people going through fires.
- 2:09So is this nation.
- 2:10So is this world.
- 2:11Man, I'm going through depression.
- 2:13That's a fire.
- 2:14Anxiety, fear, guilt, worry, shame.
- 2:18Shame?
- 2:18Oh my gosh.
- 2:19The times that we've done stuff in our life that we're not proud of, and we know other people that hurt them, and we can carry this shame, this guilt.
- 2:28And so those are fires, man.
- 2:30Cancer.
- 2:32My stepfather was diagnosed with cancer given two to five years to live.
- 2:37It's my mom's, you know, third marriage, her first great marriage.
- 2:41He's a good man.
- 2:42That's a fire.
- 2:44My sibling who is fighting fentanyl addiction.
- 2:47That's a fire.
- 2:48Like we all go through fires, man.
- 2:51Addiction, alcoholism, brokenness, divorce, failure, my business.
- 2:56Dude, I...
- 2:57This is the fourth time I've tried to get a company off the ground.
- 3:00And all four of them have, like, that's a fire, right?
- 3:03So what I have learned in my own life is that God...
- 3:11God, there are no wildfires in life.
- 3:14There are only controlled fires.
- 3:17Meaning, scripture, whether somebody believes in it or not, you can't deny the things that it says, the truth, the little nuggets of truth.
- 3:25Like, thou shall not murder.
- 3:27Maybe you don't believe in God or Jesus, but I mean, that's a pretty good rule to live by.
- 3:30It doesn't matter if you don't believe in God.
- 3:31Yeah.
- 3:32Don't murder.
- 3:32Don't commit adultery.
- 3:33I mean, that's kind of good.
- 3:35Don't lie.
- 3:35Don't cheat.
- 3:36Don't steal.
- 3:36Don't, you know.
- 3:37But one of them, one of the scripts or a couple of them, but it talks about how we get put in the fires to be tested and that fire purifies us, right?
- 3:49It refines us.
- 3:50So the fire of brokenness that I went through, the fire of that failure.
- 3:55That's going to refine me because I'm not doing that ever again.
- 3:58So that's refining me, right?
- 4:00The fire of whatever, infidelity or the fire of cheating and you get caught.
- 4:07Okay, well, that sucks.
- 4:09We're human, man.
- 4:10We have all done human stuff.
- 4:13But hopefully we learn from that and we go, man, I need to change some things about who I am.
- 4:18Maybe I need some therapy.
- 4:19Maybe I need some counseling, right?
- 4:21And so the fire being for you, it purifies you.
- 4:24Hopefully it burns out the image.
- 4:26It doesn't feel like it though.
- 4:27And the moment it's hot, it burns.
- 4:31It feels like the house is going to burn down.
- 4:33See, in the Bible, it uses three metaphors for trial.
- 4:36It uses storms.
- 4:39It uses valleys and it uses fires.
- 4:42Right.
- 4:42And so the fire is for you is a book for people to go, dude, I've gone through some some hell.
- 4:49And this book is going to help you get through your hell.
- 4:52I've gone through some hell, too.
- 4:53You know, being a man of faith doesn't exempt you, doesn't put an umbrella of like, you know, like, dude, this is life.
- 5:00This is in heaven.
- 5:01You know, it rains on the just and the unjust and good things happen to bad people and bad things happen to good people.
- 5:06And so.
- 5:07So going back to your story, the fire is for you.
- 5:11That's what that title means to me.
- 5:13Because like two years ago, I went through the fire of my life.
- 5:17My family, we went through the fire of our life and it almost killed me.
- 5:21So and I want to talk about what that fire was in a second.
- 5:24I want to go there just yet.
- 5:26I just want to I want to just point out.
- 5:28So even when you're getting that DUI and kind of just like tying back to something that I mentioned about.
- 5:34If it didn't happen, who knows when it would have happened, right?
- 5:36And that's like the perfect example of fires for you.
- 5:39And I think that...
- 5:42Without the biblical analogies, I think that when people go through stuff, when people go through really hard times, the people that I repeatedly see come out of that successful, because everybody goes through it.
- 5:54It's not like, hopefully, it doesn't happen to me.
- 5:57Life's going to happen to you.
- 5:58Life's going to happen to you.
- 5:58Fire's going to happen to you.
- 5:59Right.
- 6:00But it is how you come out on the other side of it.
- 6:03So how did you come out on the other side of that DUI?
- 6:07But I do want to, and I'll answer that question.
- 6:09I do want to say you literally just, you literally, you just, you were a preacher for a second.
- 6:15Because here's why.
- 6:16Because you said, well, you said it's not if, it's when.
- 6:19Yeah.
- 6:19Right?
- 6:19Well, David said in one of the most famous chapters in the Bible that every rapper has done a segment on this chapter is, even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, right?
- 6:31I shall fear no evil for you are with me.
- 6:34What does he say?
- 6:34He says, even though I walk, he doesn't say, I hope I don't.
- 6:37He doesn't say maybe hope like it might.
- 6:40No, he says, even though and and and those are valleys.
- 6:44And so going back to that DUI, I wouldn't be who I am today without it.
- 6:48I always say I went from jail to Jesus like like that was a wild day.
- 6:53I went from like I had this cool accolade and, you know, got an award to like, dude, I got arrested, put in jail.
- 6:59to like, dude, I just discovered my purpose in life.
- 7:03And yeah, it did shape me.
- 7:07It did define me.
- 7:10God has no, this is what I've learned, dude.
- 7:12I'm in the people business.
- 7:14I have billionaires in my church, 500 millionaires, 200 millionaires, like it's Scottsdale.
- 7:21It's the entrepreneurial hub of the nation.
- 7:24It's a very wealthy city.
- 7:26Very wealthy city, very affluent.
- 7:29I pastor pro athletes.
- 7:31I have for 23 years.
- 7:33The biggest names in sports are in my church.
- 7:36They're in my phone.
- 7:38I pastor them, right?
- 7:39This is the thing.
- 7:40When you talk about mine, mine was jail.
- 7:44I was like, dude, I screwed that up.
- 7:47But a lot of times people have everything and it looks seemingly good realizing, dude, I have nothing.
- 7:53And a great example of that is a friend of mine that I had on our stage in year three of the church is Reverend from Run DMC.
- 8:00Right.
- 8:00And I interviewed him and I go, dude, like, when did you become a Christian?
- 8:04Because he's obviously very vocal about his faith.
- 8:06And he goes, my top, he goes, my top was my bottom.
- 8:09And I go, tell me, he goes, you know how a lot of people, they hit rock bottom and then like, oh, I found God.
- 8:14I found real.
- 8:14I'm like, yeah, yeah, I know about that.
- 8:17I know.
- 8:18And he goes, well, mine was the opposite.
- 8:20I'm run run DMC at the peak of like run DMC.
- 8:24Right.
- 8:24He's like, dude, I got everything you can buy.
- 8:27I bought it.
- 8:28I've got everything money can buy.
- 8:30I've got any any earthly thing that you want in this world.
- 8:34I got it.
- 8:35And he goes, and I felt so spiritually.
- 8:39bankrupt, that in my bathtub, right then and there with a pile of weed on the bathtub, he's like, I said, you know what, I'm going to give this Jesus thing a try.
- 8:52You know, and I think...
- 8:54What are we trying to do?
- 8:55I can tell you story after story after story, Scott.
- 8:58I can tell you hundreds of stories of people who are trying to chase what many of us are trying to chase, and they've got it.
- 9:06I can tell you the hundreds and hundreds of people that have gotten it, and they go, Yeah.
- 9:11Dude, this is empty.
- 9:12This is lonely.
- 9:13I'm broken.
- 9:14I have 30, 40, 50, 100 million dollars, 200 million dollars in the bank.
- 9:19I'm broken.
- 9:21So what actually is the meaning of life?
- 9:23You know what I'm saying?
- 9:24And that's what I discovered from me being put in jail.
- 9:30You know, it was like, dude, and it wasn't my first time in jail.
- 9:32Dude, I told you I partied my face off.
- 9:35I, you know, I got in trouble for stealing and I got in trouble.
- 9:38Like, he's just brokenness.
- 9:41And so the fire is for you is like, yeah, that was a fire.
- 9:46The DUI was a fire.
- 9:47Disappointing my mom, man, that was dude, like that was a fire.
- 9:52And, but at the same time, there was a fire going on before those moments.
- 9:56And the fire was just like, dude, who am I?
- 9:58What am I supposed to do?
- 9:59Why am I here?
- 10:00What is this what it's about?
- 10:01Win awards?
- 10:02Yeah.
- 10:02get on a starting team, be a star.
- 10:04That's what life is about.
- 10:05And I can tell you star after star after star, NFL, MLB, NBA, WNBA, who they look, they're all stars to us.
- 10:14But like, I know the truth.
- 10:16I know what's going on in their lives.
- 10:17You know what I'm saying?
- 10:18And like, life is tough, man.
- 10:21Hurt people, hurt people, broken people, break people.
- 10:26Like that's what life is.
- 10:27And so for me, the fire is for you is not about me.
- 10:31Yes.
- 10:32I'm telling many of my stories, but it's giving people tools to get through the fires that they're going through right now.
- 10:39Tools, like real tools.
- 10:40Like, how do I do this, man?
- 10:42How do I do this?
- 10:43Like,
- 10:44I had a player my first year in pro sports, and I won't.
- 10:48My last ring.
- 10:49Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 10:50I'm 25 years old or something like that.
- 10:53And, you know, I'm walking in the hallways of an arena, and I'm like, dude, there's Shaq, there's Kobe.
- 10:58They're on the Lakers, and they played the Suns that day.
- 11:01And I was starstruck.
- 11:02You know, like I'm like starstruck.
- 11:03I'm like, dude, I'm 25.
- 11:05I'm like, this is my first time ever doing this.
- 11:07I didn't sleep the night before.
- 11:08I was like, this is crazy.
- 11:10And I called Natalie.
- 11:11I went around the hallway.
- 11:12I'm like, dude, Shaq's the biggest dude I've ever seen in my life.
- 11:15Like I'm literally as big as his leg.
- 11:16You know, Natalie's my wife.
- 11:19And so I'm starstruck until like the third game.
- 11:23And in the NBA, we have chapel before every game.
- 11:25By the way, the NBA is a business.
- 11:28The NFL is a business.
- 11:30Major League Baseball is a business.
- 11:31The WNBA, it's a business.
- 11:32They're a business.
- 11:34Multi, you know, million, billion dollar businesses, right?
- 11:37I think it's fascinating that they make space for, like, people to, like, have a little devotional.
- 11:43I think it is interesting.
- 11:44I've never heard of this before I heard of you.
- 11:46To be quite honest, I didn't know that exists.
- 11:48I didn't either.
- 11:49Until it, you know, until I got invited to be a part of it.
- 11:52I didn't even know it was a thing.
- 11:53Yeah.
- 11:54But like, so for the NBA before every game, one hour before every game, we have a little 15 minute window of chapel and it's both teams come or invited.
- 12:05And, you know, in that moment, we'll talk maybe a verse of scripture, but just like you're getting centered.
- 12:10You're about to go perform.
- 12:12So no matter all, it's all, it's all centering.
- 12:14It's all like it's centering its routine.
- 12:16So, hey, I might own a company.
- 12:19I might own a McDonald's.
- 12:20I might own an Arby's.
- 12:21I might own 15 of them.
- 12:22I might own 3000 of them.
- 12:24But like, but but don't don't miss out on this, this, this kind of power to go.
- 12:31But you know what?
- 12:32I do need I needs to center myself because we just go.
- 12:36And then, you know, and then pretty soon, like what you said, we're going and blowing.
- 12:40And then it's like, dude, now, like, man, I lost my marriage.
- 12:43I wasn't there for my children's games.
- 12:45And man, I made a lot of wealth.
- 12:46Yeah, but then you wonder, what's it for?
- 12:48And then you're wondering, what's it for?
- 12:49Thanks for tuning in.
