- 0:00Aloha. Friday morning, and Hurricane Nolo is moving toward the Big Island. Strong winds and heavy rain through the weekend. I'm Mele with what's happening in Hawaiʻi today.
- 1:36Expect dangerous conditions across all islands today and Saturday. Windward and southeast Big Island plus Maui will see the heaviest rain—flash flooding is the main threat, so avoid driving in affected areas. Winds will gust 30 to 40 miles per hour, worst on Big Island and Maui. If you're on Oʻahu or Kauaʻi, a Wind Advisory may already be in place.
- 1:53Ocean is rough and getting worse. East and southeast shores have high surf already; south-facing shores will see dangerous waves this weekend as the hurricane's swell builds. Wind waves could exceed 20 feet around Maui County and the Big Island. Mariners should stay off the water entirely. Oʻahu's north and south shores are running moderate but choppy—watch for rip currents and shore break.
- 2:13Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park has several road closures in place: Crater Rim Drive West, Mauna Loa Road past the second cattle guard, and Kīpukapuaulu Trail are all closed. Sulphur Banks Bridge is down, but the boardwalk is open. Closures run through mid-November.
- 2:26If you're planning ahead for winter, our piece on winter snorkeling breaks down the best sheltered shores island by island—south-facing bays where conditions stay calmer from November through April. It's a solid reference when you're deciding where to spend time in the water during the winter swell season.
- 2:42The hurricane curves west by mid-week, bringing lighter winds and gradual improvement across the islands. Conditions should ease through the rest of next week.
- 2:50Stay safe if you're on the islands this weekend. Talk to you tomorrow.
