- 0:00When the consciousness moves inward, away from the awareness
- 0:04of the external reality, it is frequently interpreted as sleep
- 0:10by those who experience it for the first time.
- 0:14The reason they believe it is sleep is due to a lack of
- 0:18communication between that inward state of consciousness
- 0:22and the outward external awareness and the identification
- 0:26with the known conception of sleep, which in some ways mimics
- 0:31the action of samadhi with respect to the absence of
- 0:35conscious attention of the external waking ego personality.
- 0:40Swami Vivekananda in his lectures on Raja Yoga states the
- 0:45following quote. There is a still higher plane
- 0:50upon which the mind can work. It can go beyond consciousness.
- 0:55Just as unconscious work is beneath consciousness, so there
- 1:00is another work which is above consciousness and which also is
- 1:04not accompanied with the feeling of egoism.
- 1:07The feeling of egoism is only on the middle plane.
- 1:11When the mind is above or below that line.
- 1:15There is no feeling of I and yet the mind works.
- 1:20When the mind goes beyond this line of self consciousness, it
- 1:24is called samadhi or superconsciousness.
- 1:28How, for instance, do we know that a man in samadhi has not
- 1:32gone below consciousness, has not degenerated instead of going
- 1:36higher? In both cases the works are
- 1:40unaccompanied with egoism. The answer is by the effects, by
- 1:45the results of the work. We know that which is below and
- 1:50that which is above. When a man goes into deep sleep,
- 1:55he enters a plane beneath consciousness.
- 1:58He works the body all the time. He breathes, he moves the body,
- 2:03perhaps in his sleep, without any accompanying feeling of ego.
- 2:09He is unconscious, and when he returns from his sleep he is the
- 2:13same man who went into it. The sum total of the knowledge
- 2:17which he had before he went into the sleep remains the same.
- 2:23It does not increase at all. No enlightenment comes.
- 2:29But when a man goes into samati, if he goes into it a fool, he
- 2:35comes out a sage. End Quote.
- 2:39He continues quote. What makes the difference?
- 2:45From one state a man comes out, the very same man that went in,
- 2:50and from another state the man comes out enlightened, a sage, a
- 2:55prophet, a St. His whole character changed, his
- 2:59life changed, illumined. These are the two effects.
- 3:05Now the effects being different, the causes must be different as
- 3:11this illumination with which a man comes back from samadhi is
- 3:14much higher than can be got from unconsciousness or much higher
- 3:19than can be got by reasoning in a conscious state, It must
- 3:23therefore be super consciousness and Samadi is called the Super
- 3:30conscious state. End Quote.
- 3:34Srioro Bindo notes quote. It was not half sleep or quarter
- 3:39sleep or even 116th sleep that you had.
- 3:43It was a going inside of the consciousness, which in that
- 3:47state remains conscious, but shut to outer things and open
- 3:51only to inner experience. You must distinguish clearly
- 3:55between these two quite different conditions. 1 is
- 3:59nidra, the other the beginning at least of samadhi, not
- 4:04nirvikalpa. Of course this drawing inside is
- 4:08necessary because the active mind of the human being is at
- 4:13first too much turn to outward things.
- 4:16It has to go inside all together in order to live in the inner
- 4:19being, inner mind, inner vital, inner physical, psychic.
- 4:27But with training one can arrive at a point when 1 remains
- 4:30outwardly conscious and yet lives in the inner being and has
- 4:35it will the indrawn or the outpoured condition.
- 4:40You can then have the same dense immobility and the same in
- 4:45pouring of a greater and pure consciousness in the waking
- 4:48state as in that which you erroneously call sleep.
