- 0:02Speaker 1: Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast, your home for
- 0:06Speaker 1: deer hunting news, stories and strategies, and now your host,
- 0:11Speaker 1: Mark Kenyon. Welcome to the Wired to Hunt Podcast. I'm
- 0:16Speaker 1: your host, Mark Kenyan, and this is episode number three
- 0:20Speaker 1: seventy five, and today we're back for our latest rut
- 0:23Speaker 1: Fresh radio episode in which we are getting updates from
- 0:26Speaker 1: deer hunters across the country on the latest deer activity,
- 0:29Speaker 1: current conditions, and the tactics that are gonna work for
- 0:32Speaker 1: you right now. All right, welcome to the Wired Hunt Podcast,
- 0:42Speaker 1: brought to you by on X. Today in my home
- 0:45Speaker 1: state of Michigan is hunting season Eve. Spencer. That's the
- 0:50Speaker 1: best night of the year as far as I'm concerned,
- 0:52Speaker 1: because the best time of the year starts tomorrow even better,
- 0:57Speaker 1: even better than like gun season Eve. Well, I'd say
- 1:01Speaker 1: for me, yes, maybe there's other people that feel differently,
- 1:04Speaker 1: but for me, this is when it all begins. Gun
- 1:07Speaker 1: season Eve actually is, at least for me, is kind
- 1:11Speaker 1: of a scary night because you know that so many
- 1:14Speaker 1: deer are gonna wiped out the next morning. Um, So
- 1:17Speaker 1: today it's all hope. Today it's it's nothing but pure good,
- 1:22Speaker 1: unadultered hope. For the season on November four, it's a
- 1:25Speaker 1: little bit more fear so. So yes, that's why I'm
- 1:29Speaker 1: really excited about today, and because we got a new
- 1:33Speaker 1: episode of rut Fresh Radio, which is our mini series.
- 1:36Speaker 1: Hopefully you guys know what that's about. But we're gonna
- 1:38Speaker 1: hear in just a couple of minutes from a handful
- 1:41Speaker 1: of hunters from across the country, and they're gonna give
- 1:43Speaker 1: us a scoop on what they've been seeing over the
- 1:45Speaker 1: last week as far as dear activity, how different conditions
- 1:49Speaker 1: have impacted deer movement. And then what does this all
- 1:52Speaker 1: mean for the next week, What should we be expecting,
- 1:55Speaker 1: what are we predicting, what kinds of tactics should we
- 1:58Speaker 1: be employing over this fort week of October. That's gonna
- 2:01Speaker 1: be the plan for today, Spencer. Um, I just told
- 2:06Speaker 1: you I'm I'm just in that very very high excitement
- 2:10Speaker 1: world right now. I've spent the last two nights laying
- 2:13Speaker 1: in bed doing the staring at maps and weather forecast
- 2:17Speaker 1: back and forth, back and forth, and debating between different
- 2:19Speaker 1: stands sites. Um, that's where I'm at. Where are you? Um?
- 2:23Speaker 1: I'm headed to Wyoming after we get done recording this podcast,
- 2:27Speaker 1: So I am similarly excited the differences. I'll be hunting
- 2:30Speaker 1: with a gun around like some broken sagebrush country and
- 2:35Speaker 1: big egg in the central part of the state. Um,
- 2:39Speaker 1: so it'll look a little bit different than what you're
- 2:41Speaker 1: doing on your opener and what I'm doing on my opener. Um.
- 2:46Speaker 1: But like you said, we're gonna talk to different hunters
- 2:48Speaker 1: from across the country this week. But the first hunter
- 2:50Speaker 1: I want to hear from Mark is you. I want
- 2:52Speaker 1: to know what you're gonna be doing for opener and
- 2:55Speaker 1: right now you sound really optimistic, and I think from
- 2:57Speaker 1: some recent social media posts you see optimistic. So I
- 3:01Speaker 1: want to hear about, like what your setup is going
- 3:03Speaker 1: to be for this October first hunt. Okay, so last week,
- 3:10Speaker 1: I think it was last week, we talked about my
- 3:13Speaker 1: generic you know, best practices or ideas for this late
- 3:18Speaker 1: September early October time frame, right, um, and I mentioned
- 3:23Speaker 1: lots of times you want to take a swing for
- 3:25Speaker 1: the fences a little bit before the hunting pressure gets crazy,
- 3:28Speaker 1: if you've got the right conditions and you want to
- 3:30Speaker 1: take that swing, you know, based off of the most
- 3:33Speaker 1: recent intelligence you have on what that top food sources
- 3:36Speaker 1: or where are these deer moving in daylight right now?
- 3:39Speaker 1: That's like the generic standard approach for in October one
- 3:43Speaker 1: type hunt. UM. Well, I have a situation that I
- 3:47Speaker 1: think lines up really well with all that. UM. Number one.
- 3:52Speaker 1: I'm after one particular buck on a Michigan property I
- 3:55Speaker 1: can hunt, and this Michigan buck has been moving in daylight.
- 3:59Speaker 1: I saw him in daylight two days in a row
- 4:04Speaker 1: this week, UM, moving into place that I can hunt him.
- 4:08Speaker 1: That cold front that came through, UM for a lot
- 4:11Speaker 1: of people that hit I don't know, Sunday or Monday.
- 4:14Speaker 1: The night before the front, he was out in daylight,
- 4:17Speaker 1: and the night after the front he was in daylight
- 4:21Speaker 1: an hour earlier than any other time I've seen him.
- 4:24Speaker 1: So that got me very excited. Saw a lot of activity,
- 4:27Speaker 1: a lot of bucks moving around. I saw several bucks
- 4:30Speaker 1: making scrapes. I saw several different bucks sparring. UM. So
- 4:35Speaker 1: when that cold weather moved through, it just got him
- 4:37Speaker 1: out and about and and moving and excited. So that's
- 4:40Speaker 1: a good thing. So that all leads me to be,
- 4:43Speaker 1: you know, not overconfident, but at least optimistic that there's
- 4:47Speaker 1: a chance at getting a shot at at the deer.
- 4:50Speaker 1: I've called tran um. There's two locations that I think
- 4:55Speaker 1: I could get a shot at him. Both of them
- 4:57Speaker 1: are food related UM, and the both close. They're basically
- 5:01Speaker 1: the same zone. It's just two entry points. UM. There's
- 5:04Speaker 1: one spot where a bean field and a corn field
- 5:08Speaker 1: come together right at the edge of the super great bedding.
- 5:13Speaker 1: And this buck and a number of deer have been
- 5:16Speaker 1: coming into this food source area UM, crossing into the
- 5:21Speaker 1: bean field and heading north into that corn a lot
- 5:24Speaker 1: of days that I've been able to watch it. That's
- 5:25Speaker 1: what they've done. The problem is to hunt that spot
- 5:29Speaker 1: with the wind we have, it's gonna blow right into
- 5:32Speaker 1: all the bedding. Are these deer coming from? And that
- 5:35Speaker 1: is the spot with the highly highest likelihood I think
- 5:38Speaker 1: of these deer coming by just based off of a
- 5:40Speaker 1: lot of observations. I've spent a lot of nights glass
- 5:43Speaker 1: in this area and that's the number one spot. But
- 5:47Speaker 1: I just don't see any way I can hunt it
- 5:49Speaker 1: with this wind. I've I've thought, man, if it's due
- 5:52Speaker 1: west or a little southwest. In the past, I wouldn't
- 5:55Speaker 1: have hunted it because it blows into part of the
- 5:56Speaker 1: betting area. But based off now year years of watching
- 6:00Speaker 1: how these bucks used this zone. They I think are
- 6:03Speaker 1: a little bit south of there, so I could probably
- 6:05Speaker 1: cut the corner and get away with it. But any
- 6:08Speaker 1: north it's just gonna blow right into the best stuff
- 6:11Speaker 1: there's I just don't think you can do it. So
- 6:13Speaker 1: because of that, I think I have to hunt my
- 6:15Speaker 1: number two spots, which is I don't know, a hundred
- 6:18Speaker 1: and fifty yards probably south of this on the exact
- 6:24Speaker 1: same line, still on the edge of this bedding, um,
- 6:28Speaker 1: but in this other spot where a lot of deer
- 6:30Speaker 1: have been coming out, just not as many times. Now.
- 6:34Speaker 1: I did see Tran two times over the last twelve days.
- 6:42Speaker 1: Two times of the last twelve days. Maybe he's come
- 6:44Speaker 1: out into that corn bean corner and then headed south
- 6:47Speaker 1: and went into this zone too. And last year on
- 6:52Speaker 1: October one, he came into this spot and passed by
- 6:55Speaker 1: this exact location. So between historical data and you know,
- 6:59Speaker 1: two ops are vations over the last twelve fourteen days,
- 7:01Speaker 1: and there were nights that I couldn't watch it, so
- 7:03Speaker 1: he might have done that on the nights I wasn't there. Um.
- 7:06Speaker 1: All that tells me that this is my second best
- 7:08Speaker 1: place to be, but it's best for wind, so it
- 7:12Speaker 1: is where there's an entry into this food source area
- 7:17Speaker 1: out of the bean field or sorry, out of the cover.
- 7:20Speaker 1: There's a little green food plot that these deer like
- 7:22Speaker 1: to hit first before they head to the big agg fields.
- 7:25Speaker 1: And there's this kind of dead zone where I can
- 7:28Speaker 1: have my wind blowing south of the bedding area and
- 7:31Speaker 1: not spook these deer. So at a high level, that's
- 7:35Speaker 1: what this area looks like. It's it's a place that
- 7:37Speaker 1: I hunt a lot early in the season, like every year.
- 7:40Speaker 1: It's a spot that I hunt once or twice in
- 7:43Speaker 1: the early part of the year and traditionally has given
- 7:45Speaker 1: me a lot of opportunities. This is a spot where
- 7:48Speaker 1: I passed a really nice buck last year. I passed
- 7:50Speaker 1: a hundred, I don't know, hundred thirty five inch type
- 7:54Speaker 1: nine pointer last year on my first hunt in that spot,
- 7:58Speaker 1: um which a lot of people thought it's crazy for doing,
- 8:00Speaker 1: because I really wanted to get a shot at tran
- 8:02Speaker 1: So you know, it's a spot of note can produce
- 8:06Speaker 1: at this time of your conditions look good. That cold
- 8:08Speaker 1: front came through earlier in the week. It kind of
- 8:11Speaker 1: stabilizes now and then dropping another ten degrees or so
- 8:14Speaker 1: give or take from the highest today to the highest tomorrow,
- 8:18Speaker 1: mixed with a rising barometric pressure. It's low pressure yesterday,
- 8:22Speaker 1: the day before, and then starting last night and over
- 8:25Speaker 1: the course of today, Tomorrow and Friday it's steadily rising,
- 8:29Speaker 1: with Friday probably being the highest pressure day. Um. As
- 8:33Speaker 1: we've talked in the past, a lot of people like
- 8:35Speaker 1: those high barometric pressure days. That's lining up here with
- 8:39Speaker 1: cold temperatures about ten degrees lower than average for this
- 8:42Speaker 1: time of years that we have, we are about oh,
- 8:47Speaker 1: almost thirty degrees lower temperatures than we were just a
- 8:50Speaker 1: couple of days ago. So conditions are lining up, the
- 8:53Speaker 1: sightings are lining up, the history is lining up. And
- 8:57Speaker 1: all that's to say that, you know, I'm excited. If
- 9:02Speaker 1: nothing else, I'm excited. Yeah, and uh, you know, every
- 9:06Speaker 1: year on Red Fresh Radio and the last two years specifically,
- 9:10Speaker 1: there's some cold front event that happens like between October
- 9:13Speaker 1: one in October fift and this is really anecdotal, like
- 9:16Speaker 1: a lot of this stuff, UM, but we've talked about
- 9:19Speaker 1: and talked about this in the past. Mark, how a
- 9:21Speaker 1: whole bunch of mature bucks get killed on like that
- 9:24Speaker 1: first cold front of October. UM and that's why you're
- 9:29Speaker 1: optimistic right now. Now, what I think is like even
- 9:32Speaker 1: more relevant than like this specific cold front is if
- 9:35Speaker 1: you look at like the really extended forecast, um, Saturday
- 9:40Speaker 1: and Sunday are the coldest days for most of the
- 9:43Speaker 1: country that we're gonna have for like the next fifteen days,
- 9:46Speaker 1: and so looking ahead like this is the cold front
- 9:50Speaker 1: mark um, the one that we talked about last year
- 9:53Speaker 1: and a bunch of bucks were killed, the ones that
- 9:54Speaker 1: we talked about in when a bunch of bucks were killed.
- 9:58Speaker 1: This is that one for money, because there's not going
- 10:01Speaker 1: to be like another big cold snap that happens um
- 10:04Speaker 1: during what a lot of hunters referred to as the
- 10:07Speaker 1: October lull um. So, like you said this, this is
- 10:10Speaker 1: probably for a lot of hunters the time to take
- 10:13Speaker 1: that swing, because if you're waiting on cold weather to
- 10:17Speaker 1: get some deer on their feet, you're probably not gonna
- 10:19Speaker 1: get it for like the next you know, fifteen to
- 10:22Speaker 1: twenty days. Yeah, that's a really good point. I actually hadn't.
- 10:25Speaker 1: I've been so obsessed with looking at the weather for
- 10:28Speaker 1: Tomorrow and Friday that i haven't even looked way past
- 10:31Speaker 1: to like the eleventh, fourteen and you're right, this is it,
- 10:36Speaker 1: and that's that's a huge point you just made, because
- 10:40Speaker 1: this is the time to take your crack and then
- 10:43Speaker 1: you know we're to wait till almost late October until
- 10:45Speaker 1: something else might come. So yeah, if you if you're informed,
- 10:48Speaker 1: if you have that you know, if you have any
- 10:50Speaker 1: of the kind of data I just listed like I
- 10:52Speaker 1: have in this situation, use it. Take a swing. Um,
- 10:57Speaker 1: see what happens. You know, you never know all these things,
- 10:59Speaker 1: like you said, Spencer, We've got some anecdotal we've got
- 11:03Speaker 1: some you know, I don't know. I don't want to
- 11:07Speaker 1: get into the whole thing where we debate, uh what
- 11:10Speaker 1: hunters different factors. Yeah, but but man, there's a lot
- 11:14Speaker 1: of things lining up. So short, short answer to all
- 11:17Speaker 1: this is if you can get out, get out, go
- 11:20Speaker 1: after him. We've got a decent chance over the next
- 11:22Speaker 1: couple of days. One more thing I want to touch on, Mark,
- 11:25Speaker 1: and it's something that we talked about with our guests
- 11:26Speaker 1: this week. A little bit um is that today September
- 11:31Speaker 1: is a full moon. Now, hunters give a lot of
- 11:35Speaker 1: attention to the next full moon, the one that happens
- 11:38Speaker 1: at like the end of October, the beginning of November,
- 11:41Speaker 1: but almost nobody talks about this specific full moon. UM.
- 11:45Speaker 1: So I want to know, Mark, is that anything that
- 11:47Speaker 1: you pay attention to, um, or that you put any
- 11:50Speaker 1: stock into for the full moon that we have on
- 11:54Speaker 1: today sept I don't put too much stock into it personally. UM.
- 12:00Speaker 1: You know, there's there's some people who think that deer
- 12:03Speaker 1: don't move on a full moon because it's so bright
- 12:05Speaker 1: out they can just move in the middle of the night. UM.
- 12:08Speaker 1: But then there's other people like the Druries who really
- 12:11Speaker 1: like the full moons, UM, who think that the light
- 12:14Speaker 1: of the moon is your very best time of the
- 12:15Speaker 1: year to be hunting, that the dark of the moon
- 12:17Speaker 1: so middle of October is not very good. I just
- 12:20Speaker 1: was listening to a little video that Mark and Terry
- 12:22Speaker 1: Dreury posted, and they were talking about how they think
- 12:25Speaker 1: that having the moon right now, lining up with this
- 12:28Speaker 1: cold weather and the beginning of the season is going
- 12:30Speaker 1: to make this amazing. So you're gonna hear a load
- 12:33Speaker 1: of everything from people when it comes to the moon specifically.
- 12:36Speaker 1: But the juries have always pointed to when you've got
- 12:41Speaker 1: that moon that is rising early in the evening, so
- 12:44Speaker 1: if you're out there the last hour or two of
- 12:46Speaker 1: daylight on an evening hunt and the moon's out already,
- 12:49Speaker 1: that's a good thing. And then on the flip side,
- 12:52Speaker 1: if there's a moon that's setting late in the morning,
- 12:55Speaker 1: so if you're out there it's the first hour of
- 12:57Speaker 1: daylight or two and the moon's still out, that's going
- 13:00Speaker 1: to help a little bit. And that's the situation you've
- 13:02Speaker 1: got right now. We've forgot it late or sorry again,
- 13:04Speaker 1: early moon in these early, these evening hunts leading up
- 13:07Speaker 1: to today, and then it's going to be starting to
- 13:10Speaker 1: give you more moonlight in the morning, uh, starting tomorrow,
- 13:13Speaker 1: in the next couple of days. So I don't put
- 13:16Speaker 1: too much into it, but for whatever it's worth, Mark
- 13:18Speaker 1: and Terry are saying that the morning hunts might be
- 13:20Speaker 1: particularly good over the next couple of days because of that. Uh,
- 13:24Speaker 1: I'm keying and mostly on the temperature swing, and I'm
- 13:27Speaker 1: getting out there and excited that. Yeah, the moon stuff
- 13:31Speaker 1: says it could be good. So sure, I'll take any
- 13:33Speaker 1: extra luck I can take, but I'm not going to
- 13:35Speaker 1: count too much on that. I'm putting my eggs in
- 13:37Speaker 1: the cold front basket and that's what's given me most
- 13:40Speaker 1: of the confidence on top of my sightings. The cold
- 13:44Speaker 1: front is something we'll talk about with all of our guests,
- 13:45Speaker 1: and we'll also touch on the moon. Who we talked
- 13:48Speaker 1: to you this week is Joe Call from Minnesota. Rack
- 13:50Speaker 1: Stars in Minnesota. Vince Bodiata in Tennessee, Nate Creek in
- 13:55Speaker 1: Kansas from Identical Draw and they're from white Tail Experience
- 13:58Speaker 1: in Ohio. Is Byron Horn. Sounds good to me, Spencer.
- 14:03Speaker 1: Let's uh, let's tune in here. These guys have to
- 14:05Speaker 1: say and then get out hunting. All right, Good luck. Mark,
- 14:08Speaker 1: talked to you next week, Same to you, all right
- 14:12Speaker 1: in joining us on the line. Next is Joe Call
- 14:15Speaker 1: from Minnesota Rack Stars in Minnesota. Now Joe in Minnesota.
- 14:19Speaker 1: What would you say the buck activity is ben lately?
- 14:21Speaker 1: On a scale of one to ten, I would have
- 14:23Speaker 1: to give it about a six. Um. There's been a
- 14:26Speaker 1: lot of people have been in contact with that have
- 14:28Speaker 1: either known someone or themselves. They've put down some good
- 14:32Speaker 1: deer lately here. So let's say on a scale it's
- 14:34Speaker 1: probably right around of six your friends who have been successful.
- 14:38Speaker 1: What are those setups look like in late September in Minnesota? Personally,
- 14:43Speaker 1: I like the green food sources right now. Um, talk
- 14:46Speaker 1: to a guy last night'sot a nice mature eight pointer,
- 14:49Speaker 1: and he was actually on a bean field that actually
- 14:52Speaker 1: has turned brown already. So I mean, um, it's it's
- 14:55Speaker 1: field edges. Um, it's just inside the woodline, you know,
- 15:00Speaker 1: trying to catch them coming from their bed going out
- 15:02Speaker 1: to that food source. But you know, anything right now
- 15:05Speaker 1: that's green, whether it's alf alfa, clover, or even those
- 15:09Speaker 1: beans right now, it's just kind of the food sources
- 15:12Speaker 1: are in your area, and you know, continue to scout
- 15:14Speaker 1: and monitor your deer activity and then kind of go
- 15:17Speaker 1: off of that. But yeah, I would say focus on
- 15:19Speaker 1: you know, those beans and also you're clover and alfalfa.
- 15:23Speaker 1: Are there any natural food sources this time of year
- 15:25Speaker 1: that you focus on. You know, the acorns have really
- 15:28Speaker 1: been dropping like crazy this year. Um, they actually started
- 15:32Speaker 1: dropping fairly early. So UM, I know I have a
- 15:34Speaker 1: tree rate in my yard that the deer have cleaned
- 15:36Speaker 1: up already. So I mean, yeah, kind of monitoring those
- 15:39Speaker 1: those oaks and and see you know who's dropping, and
- 15:42Speaker 1: you know, kind of keying on those a little bit. Um.
- 15:45Speaker 1: You know, that's that's primarily you know the most um,
- 15:49Speaker 1: attractable food source in my area. Definitely is is those
- 15:52Speaker 1: acorns right now too? You mentioned that you're doing a
- 15:54Speaker 1: lot of field edge sets this time of year. Do
- 15:57Speaker 1: you pay attention to things like scrap on those field
- 16:01Speaker 1: edges or that's not something that you really care about. Yeah,
- 16:04Speaker 1: so I know this past spring, I actually went in
- 16:07Speaker 1: and he limitated some possible looking branches in my woods
- 16:11Speaker 1: just to kind of speed up the process a little
- 16:14Speaker 1: bit for those bucks getting out to those field edges
- 16:17Speaker 1: and keeping those licking branches a little closer to the
- 16:20Speaker 1: field edge, you know, so they don't get hung up
- 16:22Speaker 1: deep in the woods. But the scrapes are actually starting
- 16:24Speaker 1: to open up right now. I've got a lot of
- 16:26Speaker 1: reports guys seeing some scrapes in the woods. So, um,
- 16:29Speaker 1: I would definitely, you know, take that into consideration coming
- 16:32Speaker 1: up here with this cold front coming in and uh,
- 16:36Speaker 1: you know, try to get on one of those scrapes
- 16:38Speaker 1: inside the woods. Um, maybe not necessarily on those those
- 16:41Speaker 1: field edges, because those primarily are are are late night
- 16:45Speaker 1: screen uh spots. So I would out keep more in
- 16:49Speaker 1: the wood scrape lines. Where are you running your trail
- 16:51Speaker 1: cameras right now? Yeah, So I got a couple of
- 16:53Speaker 1: pinch points that I'm I'm running some cameras and then
- 16:56Speaker 1: you know, also those food sources. But you know, if
- 17:00Speaker 1: it's if it comes down to running a trail camera
- 17:03Speaker 1: to try to harvest the mature deer, it's definitely those
- 17:06Speaker 1: pains points just inside the woods, probably a hundred yards
- 17:09Speaker 1: or so. That's where I'm focusing right now. We have
- 17:12Speaker 1: a cold front coming up for most of the country.
- 17:14Speaker 1: Does that change anything for you in Minnesota? Get my
- 17:18Speaker 1: button the woods to get everybody in the woods man.
- 17:20Speaker 1: It's it's this, This is the front that that I've
- 17:23Speaker 1: kind of been waiting for. Um. You know, it's kind
- 17:26Speaker 1: of been you know, ideal temperatures, um, you know, throughout
- 17:31Speaker 1: the hunting season so far. But right now is the
- 17:34Speaker 1: time to get out. The temps are gonna drop, you know,
- 17:36Speaker 1: twenty degrees here in the next two days, and the
- 17:38Speaker 1: pressure is gonna be rising. Um. And that's perfect recipe
- 17:42Speaker 1: for harvesting mature gear right now. You touched on your
- 17:45Speaker 1: attention to scrapes, but do you care about rubs in
- 17:48Speaker 1: the same way? Not necessarily yet. UM. To me, those
- 17:51Speaker 1: rubs right now would have to be you know, those
- 17:55Speaker 1: bucks when they're kind of shedding their velvet. Um. You know,
- 17:57Speaker 1: we'll see them out there rubbing out stuff off. Uh,
- 18:00Speaker 1: you know, the scrapes the deer, every every buck that
- 18:03Speaker 1: I've seen so far on stand you know, the little
- 18:05Speaker 1: guys that are coming out on the on the field, Um,
- 18:07Speaker 1: they go find another buck in there. They're tickling antlers
- 18:10Speaker 1: with each other, so they're starting to try to find
- 18:13Speaker 1: that pack in order a little bit and testing out
- 18:15Speaker 1: their strength to see where they're gonna be sitting. But
- 18:17Speaker 1: I would say, you know, um, you know, focus more
- 18:19Speaker 1: on the scrapes and the rubs right now as we
- 18:21Speaker 1: get into what most hunters consider to be the law.
- 18:24Speaker 1: Do you have any tips or tactics that used to
- 18:26Speaker 1: try to get a mature buck within these next couple
- 18:29Speaker 1: of weeks. Yeah, I just you know, I would say,
- 18:31Speaker 1: pay attention you know to the weather. Um. And then
- 18:34Speaker 1: also you know, don't don't over hunt your property. You know,
- 18:37Speaker 1: depending on your property size and how much time you
- 18:40Speaker 1: have available to get out hunting. But for myself, I've
- 18:43Speaker 1: been kind of staying out of the woods and and
- 18:45Speaker 1: waiting for the right time. And then you know, every
- 18:48Speaker 1: deer is different. Um, you know, we We've had a
- 18:51Speaker 1: mature year that we've been watching, and normally this time
- 18:54Speaker 1: of year we're not hunting mornings. But what happens the
- 18:57Speaker 1: second day of archery. He comes in at said and
- 19:00Speaker 1: thirty in the morning. So, I mean, every deer is different,
- 19:02Speaker 1: and you just gotta, you know, pay attention to what
- 19:04Speaker 1: they're doing in your area and go off of that
- 19:06Speaker 1: going forward. Then in the next week or so, what
- 19:09Speaker 1: do you think that buck activity is going to be
- 19:10Speaker 1: on a scale of one to ten in Minnesota? You know,
- 19:14Speaker 1: with this weather front coming in, I have to put
- 19:16Speaker 1: it at least a nine. Um, I'm really looking forward
- 19:19Speaker 1: to to seeing some big bucks hit the ground, and
- 19:22Speaker 1: uh yeah, it should be. It should be really interesting
- 19:24Speaker 1: and I'm looking forward to it. All right, Joe, good
- 19:27Speaker 1: luck to you and everyone else from Minnesota rack Stars,
- 19:29Speaker 1: Thanks for joining me. Sounds good. Thanks Spencer, alright and
- 19:33Speaker 1: joining us on the line. Next is Vince Bodiata from Tennessee. Now,
- 19:37Speaker 1: Vince in Tennessee, what would you say the buck activities
- 19:40Speaker 1: been Leley? On a scale of one to ten, I
- 19:43Speaker 1: would say the buck activity has probably been around uh
- 19:47Speaker 1: six and a half to seven, depending on where you are. Um, lately,
- 19:52Speaker 1: we've we've started to see you know, the bachelor groups
- 19:55Speaker 1: there's they're still kind of there together, but we have
- 19:58Speaker 1: started to see them start to split off a little
- 20:00Speaker 1: bit and starting to starting to start making some sign
- 20:03Speaker 1: and stuff like that. But we've we've still been running
- 20:05Speaker 1: into quite a few. So are you seeing any mature
- 20:08Speaker 1: bucks that are moving in daylight? Still? We have seen some, Um,
- 20:13Speaker 1: I think there is a few that are really starting
- 20:16Speaker 1: to move around to their their second home ranges. Um.
- 20:19Speaker 1: But we do have a couple um that that are
- 20:22Speaker 1: moving in daylight. Um. But I think a lot of
- 20:25Speaker 1: them they're just they're just starting to kind of move
- 20:27Speaker 1: around a little bit and just kind of start to
- 20:29Speaker 1: get comfortable. A lot of the country has a cold
- 20:32Speaker 1: front coming up here in these next couple of days
- 20:34Speaker 1: that it's already started in the South, in the state
- 20:37Speaker 1: like Tennessee. What are the impacts of a cold front
- 20:40Speaker 1: and what is like that degree difference that you're looking
- 20:43Speaker 1: for that would be different from someone who's maybe hunting
- 20:45Speaker 1: in like Illinois or Michigan. Yeah, so, uh, definitely totally
- 20:51Speaker 1: different than than the North. It does not take much
- 20:54Speaker 1: to to get there moving on their feet here. This
- 20:56Speaker 1: far south. Um. Being someone that that grew up in
- 20:59Speaker 1: mission again, UM, you know you're looking for those really
- 21:02Speaker 1: you know, really cold um temperatures to really drop to
- 21:05Speaker 1: kind of get them up and moving. Um here, you know,
- 21:07Speaker 1: let's just say it was you know you've been running,
- 21:11Speaker 1: you know, and temperatures in the seventies. As soon as
- 21:14Speaker 1: it drops ten degrees, I mean they're gonna be they're
- 21:16Speaker 1: gonna be up and moving around. So, especially with the
- 21:18Speaker 1: cooler temperatures that are coming up, um some getting down
- 21:21Speaker 1: into the mid forties, we should have some pretty good movements.
- 21:24Speaker 1: So as someone who haunts a lot of public land,
- 21:27Speaker 1: where do you want your trail cameras as we get
- 21:29Speaker 1: into early October? Uh, right now, I would probably say
- 21:35Speaker 1: I'm I'm probably most likely going to leave my trail
- 21:39Speaker 1: cameras um on scrapes is probably where I'm gonna be
- 21:43Speaker 1: leaving them. I do have a couple that are on
- 21:45Speaker 1: some transition areas, um just from betting to food. Um.
- 21:49Speaker 1: But for the majority of the part through October, they'll
- 21:51Speaker 1: they'll they'll be on scrapes for sure. So are you
- 21:54Speaker 1: seeing some signmaking already in Tennessee? Yeah, not not a ton,
- 21:58Speaker 1: but we are starting to see you know, the community
- 22:01Speaker 1: scrapes starting to come up a little bit um but
- 22:04Speaker 1: not not not a whole lot, but it should within
- 22:06Speaker 1: the next couple of weeks, it'll probably start getting pretty heavy.
- 22:11Speaker 1: What food sources are you focused on this time of year? Uh,
- 22:15Speaker 1: this time of year, I mean we're we're starting to
- 22:17Speaker 1: look for you know, the acorns dropping, um, stuff like that,
- 22:20Speaker 1: but just just regular brows, not nothing too crazy. There's
- 22:23Speaker 1: still some standing crops and stuff around. Um, but really
- 22:27Speaker 1: we're really just mainly focused on those transition areas mainly. Now.
- 22:32Speaker 1: Tennessee has an early season that opens up around the
- 22:36Speaker 1: end of August. I know you were hunting that season.
- 22:39Speaker 1: How with patterns change since then until now, probably of
- 22:43Speaker 1: a difference has that month made? Uh, it's it's definitely
- 22:47Speaker 1: made a difference, I would say during that time and
- 22:49Speaker 1: that that early part of the season. Um, if you've
- 22:52Speaker 1: been watching them, they're they're they're dead nuts on their
- 22:55Speaker 1: on their pattern um from then until now. Um, Like
- 22:59Speaker 1: I said, they're starting to split off a little bit
- 23:01Speaker 1: um still on some of the patterns, but it's a
- 23:06Speaker 1: it's definitely starting to change. You said you're seeing some
- 23:09Speaker 1: signmaking already. How much does deer sign factor into your
- 23:12Speaker 1: decision making as a public land hunter this time of year?
- 23:16Speaker 1: Oh yeah, it's it's it's huge, um, you know, with
- 23:19Speaker 1: with all the pressure and stuff that that you do
- 23:21Speaker 1: get on public land and you just never know what
- 23:23Speaker 1: you are going to run into out there. Um, you know,
- 23:26Speaker 1: we we try to do our our best to just
- 23:28Speaker 1: kind of hunt our way in and always looking for
- 23:31Speaker 1: just the most hottest, freshest sign that that we can find.
- 23:34Speaker 1: And as soon as we roll up on one with
- 23:36Speaker 1: just just hanging hunt on that, unless you got some
- 23:38Speaker 1: intel somewhere else, are you getting pretty close to beds? Uh?
- 23:43Speaker 1: We have a little bit. I probably will get a
- 23:46Speaker 1: little bit closer here as the month rolls on. Um,
- 23:50Speaker 1: but we have started to move in. I would say
- 23:53Speaker 1: no more than a hundred yards going forward. Then, in
- 23:55Speaker 1: the next week or so, what do you think that
- 23:57Speaker 1: bucket TV is going to be on a scale of
- 24:00Speaker 1: to ten in Tennessee? I would probably probably say about
- 24:03Speaker 1: the same or maybe even just a It could even
- 24:06Speaker 1: get up to an eight, just depending on the temperatures.
- 24:09Speaker 1: If it stays cooler like it's saying that's going to
- 24:12Speaker 1: then we should have some pretty good buck movement, our adventable.
- 24:15Speaker 1: Good luck with your hunts. Thanks for joining me, buddy,
- 24:17Speaker 1: Thank you alright and joining us on the line. Next
- 24:20Speaker 1: is Nate Crick in Kansas from identical draw now Nate
- 24:24Speaker 1: in Kansas. What would you say the buck activity has
- 24:27Speaker 1: been lately on the scale of one to ten, I
- 24:29Speaker 1: would say the buck activity is probably in the five
- 24:32Speaker 1: to ten range. Um, I gave it a five to ten.
- 24:36Speaker 1: I give it lower. But honestly, the last week we've
- 24:40Speaker 1: had a little cold snap, so I think they've been
- 24:42Speaker 1: on their feet a little bit more moving with that. Um,
- 24:45Speaker 1: but yeah, five to ten for buck moving this last week.
- 24:48Speaker 1: When we get a cold front this time of year,
- 24:50Speaker 1: what specifically do you notice that's different with dear movement. Um,
- 24:55Speaker 1: as far as recently we've had with this last cold front,
- 24:58Speaker 1: our cameras have been way more active. We have a
- 25:02Speaker 1: few cellular cameras on our property in Kansas, and UM,
- 25:06Speaker 1: we've been getting a bunch of dove movement. The buck
- 25:08Speaker 1: activity has been okay, but the dope movement has increased significantly,
- 25:12Speaker 1: And I know once they start moving then the bucks
- 25:15Speaker 1: will soon follow. Um. Yeah, they've they've been moving a
- 25:19Speaker 1: lot more. I say, this morning was probably the most
- 25:22Speaker 1: movement I've seen, and it's also the coolest morning I've
- 25:25Speaker 1: seen this season. Um With that, we've also seen movement
- 25:29Speaker 1: in different areas. Um The cameras that we have in
- 25:32Speaker 1: the timber, we only have a few of them in there.
- 25:34Speaker 1: We need to move a few more, but our cameras
- 25:35Speaker 1: in the timber are definitely getting hit and activated more.
- 25:39Speaker 1: Um So, yeah, there's kind of a shift going on there.
- 25:42Speaker 1: A lot of haunters like to let their trail cameras
- 25:44Speaker 1: soak for the next month or so. Where do you
- 25:47Speaker 1: like to have those trail cameras set from now until
- 25:50Speaker 1: the rout? Yeah? Right now. Like I said, we have
- 25:53Speaker 1: ours on the food stores and it's still goods um
- 25:56Speaker 1: our bean plot. We have a three acre being in
- 25:58Speaker 1: Braska plot and that's still get hit pretty heavily. But
- 26:01Speaker 1: like I said, this, with these cold fronts and this
- 26:04Speaker 1: next month, they're definitely going to be making more of
- 26:06Speaker 1: a transition to the bedding and timber. So we had
- 26:10Speaker 1: a few different corridors um and ridgelines that we will
- 26:13Speaker 1: be moving. Some of our cameras that are on the
- 26:15Speaker 1: bean in Braska, mix and clover plots will be moving
- 26:18Speaker 1: some of those into that thicker timber where um those
- 26:22Speaker 1: bills and bucks will start to hanging out more. It
- 26:24Speaker 1: sounds like the white tails in New area have a
- 26:26Speaker 1: lot of choices for food. But what are they hitting
- 26:28Speaker 1: the hardest right now? Yeah, so, um, we've got a
- 26:32Speaker 1: lot of a lot of agon areas. They are corn
- 26:34Speaker 1: in the beans, um. And last night when we were
- 26:37Speaker 1: watching them, they were still hitting our bean field really hard. Um.
- 26:41Speaker 1: We do have some ratshes and turnips in that area too,
- 26:43Speaker 1: and they were starting to hit that. But still the
- 26:46Speaker 1: beans were probably the number one UM thing they were
- 26:49Speaker 1: feeding on. UM. Right now, the crops are majority of
- 26:52Speaker 1: the crops are still in. They haven't been harvested yet,
- 26:55Speaker 1: so they're still um hitting both corner beans pretty good.
- 26:58Speaker 1: But last night when I saw the mix when they
- 27:00Speaker 1: at Clover, they had peas um, the brassicas and then
- 27:04Speaker 1: the beans in the area. They are still definitely focusing
- 27:07Speaker 1: on the beans the most. Are you seeing any signmaking yet? Um?
- 27:11Speaker 1: Very little. It's just starting up. UM. We've we've made
- 27:15Speaker 1: a few mock scrapes. I think that's a great time
- 27:17Speaker 1: to do the mock scrapes. And we also um planted
- 27:21Speaker 1: a licking branch in our field, just basically cut a
- 27:24Speaker 1: cut a branch and buried in the ground, and that
- 27:27Speaker 1: has been starting to get hit more and more these
- 27:29Speaker 1: this next week or two. If there's cold fronts, I'm
- 27:32Speaker 1: gonna be sitting near that that looking branch because I
- 27:34Speaker 1: know that the scrape action and the rub action is
- 27:37Speaker 1: about to get pretty good. We have a full moon
- 27:39Speaker 1: coming up. Does that change anything as far as your
- 27:42Speaker 1: strategy goes? Personally, I'm I'm not a huge moon guy. Um,
- 27:47Speaker 1: I know a lot of guys who have and die
- 27:48Speaker 1: by it. And if if I'm hunting during it, then
- 27:51Speaker 1: I'm like, hey, thumbs up. If it helps, it helps.
- 27:53Speaker 1: But right now I am mainly focused on those cold
- 27:57Speaker 1: cold fronts whenever they drop. If if we have this
- 28:00Speaker 1: difficant drop and weather, I'm going to be out there hunting,
- 28:02Speaker 1: especially if you have a little rain like we did
- 28:04Speaker 1: this last cold front. I'm gonna get there either that
- 28:06Speaker 1: evening if it clears up, or that next dry morning
- 28:10Speaker 1: or evening sits So, yeah, the moon, it's great if
- 28:13Speaker 1: it's full. That doesn't really change my strategy mainly a
- 28:16Speaker 1: weather guy, but yeah, definitely cold temps and full moon
- 28:19Speaker 1: should be good, Nate. I know you and your brother
- 28:22Speaker 1: have had success killing big white tails in October. What
- 28:25Speaker 1: do you think it is about this coming month that
- 28:28Speaker 1: works so well for you guys on your property in Kansas.
- 28:32Speaker 1: The thing that we have done is unless there's a
- 28:35Speaker 1: good cold snap, which I'm talking at least fifteen twenty
- 28:38Speaker 1: degrees dropped UM in the high of the temperature and
- 28:42Speaker 1: like good barometric pressure, we are only hunting those days.
- 28:46Speaker 1: We are not going to be touching the property unless
- 28:48Speaker 1: we have the significant cold cold front come through. UM.
- 28:51Speaker 1: And yeah, we've the way we've killed UM last year
- 28:54Speaker 1: early October was UM, it's October three, I believe it is.
- 28:58Speaker 1: I mean the temperature drop about thirty degrees. We had
- 29:01Speaker 1: rain comes through that night, UM, and that next evening
- 29:03Speaker 1: we were sitting the field edge. U there's a bean
- 29:06Speaker 1: field and he was out there making fresh stegn UM.
- 29:09Speaker 1: I think I think cold fronts during either any time
- 29:12Speaker 1: during October. I know there's sometimes that October Lowell people
- 29:15Speaker 1: talk about, but I think if you get any cold
- 29:17Speaker 1: snap during the month of October, I think you should
- 29:19Speaker 1: be looking at food sources if it's still UM applicable
- 29:23Speaker 1: or timber scrape lines. That's where we've had our most
- 29:26Speaker 1: success killing bucks over scrapes. And like I mentioned before,
- 29:29Speaker 1: those licking branches, we've killed bucks in October over those
- 29:31Speaker 1: licking branches on food sources. They can be super deadly
- 29:34Speaker 1: during October going forward. Then, in the next week or so,
- 29:37Speaker 1: what do you think that bucket activity is going to
- 29:39Speaker 1: be on a scale of one to ten in Kansas
- 29:42Speaker 1: looking at the weather and stuff. Um, I'm thinking it's
- 29:45Speaker 1: probably going to be the same, probably in that five
- 29:47Speaker 1: to ten or six to ten on the buck movement. Um.
- 29:51Speaker 1: And I'm thinking I'm probably going to be staying off
- 29:54Speaker 1: that property and waiting to hunt until we get the
- 29:56Speaker 1: better cold snap during this next week. But hey, if
- 29:59Speaker 1: you if you're in a property where you guys have
- 30:01Speaker 1: some nice cold weather and bucks on their feet, go
- 30:03Speaker 1: hit it. But right now, yeah, I'm saying probably five
- 30:05Speaker 1: percent right now, but old road. All right, Nate, Well,
- 30:07Speaker 1: good luck to you and your brother. Looking forward to
- 30:09Speaker 1: seeing more videos from Identical Draw. Thanks for joining me
- 30:14Speaker 1: alright and joining us on the line. Next is Byron
- 30:16Speaker 1: Horton from White Tail Experience in Ohio. Now, Byron in Ohio,
- 30:20Speaker 1: what would you say the buck activities Ben Leley. On
- 30:22Speaker 1: a scale of one to ten, I would say it's
- 30:25Speaker 1: a three. Um, just I'm based on the guys I
- 30:28Speaker 1: talked to him myself being out in the field a
- 30:30Speaker 1: decent amount. Here, we had a very warm opener. Um.
- 30:34Speaker 1: Today we do have a cold front moving through. But
- 30:36Speaker 1: I think, um, I think today's to day if you're
- 30:39Speaker 1: gonna get it done. But but literally the past couple
- 30:42Speaker 1: of days it's been hot. So you think the cold
- 30:44Speaker 1: front is gonna change things in Ohio. Yeah, the front
- 30:49Speaker 1: that just pushed through had good winds, like kind of
- 30:51Speaker 1: getting up their fifteen plus mile an hour, and so
- 30:54Speaker 1: like our our oaks are now on the sound from
- 30:58Speaker 1: that front, and so that, like the ocock population on
- 31:00Speaker 1: the grounds has jumped up tremendously in the last like
- 31:03Speaker 1: forty eight hours. Um. But I think guys that that
- 31:07Speaker 1: were kind of on a book, Um, I think today's
- 31:09Speaker 1: the day they're going to kill them. Um. Otherwise, like
- 31:11Speaker 1: the front, the rest of the week is is kind
- 31:14Speaker 1: of neutral. There's some some some tent drops, but nothing drastic,
- 31:17Speaker 1: nothing outside of a few degrees. But um, yesterday's today
- 31:21Speaker 1: we kind of had that bigger ten degrees swing. Um,
- 31:24Speaker 1: So so I think here, today's a day if if
- 31:27Speaker 1: you're gonna get it done. Besides oaks, what are the
- 31:30Speaker 1: food sources should hunters in Ohio focus on right now? So? Uh,
- 31:35Speaker 1: something noted in farm country from some of the scouting
- 31:37Speaker 1: I've been doing is, uh, the bean fields that are
- 31:40Speaker 1: smaller with like essentially more shade um still are green
- 31:45Speaker 1: or maybe those are being said planted late so you
- 31:47Speaker 1: still can find like green beans. I don't know if
- 31:51Speaker 1: it's got something to do with the planting, but I
- 31:53Speaker 1: know of to too green bean fields that are dominant
- 31:56Speaker 1: green instead of the yellow, so I think those can
- 31:58Speaker 1: be hot. Andy did see a buck hitting beans that
- 32:02Speaker 1: were turning on. I think that was Sunday evening. UM,
- 32:05Speaker 1: So that's kind of a source in foreign country. UM.
- 32:09Speaker 1: As far as the oaks are concerned, from the scouting
- 32:12Speaker 1: I've seen UM with the white oaks are dropping and
- 32:16Speaker 1: this isn't like a big year for oaks, so it's
- 32:18Speaker 1: it's a little concentrated patches UM. And definitely if you
- 32:23Speaker 1: I feel like the deer a touch lower over the weekend.
- 32:26Speaker 1: They seem to be lower on the big hills UM,
- 32:28Speaker 1: and I think that's due to they can get to
- 32:30Speaker 1: watering in oaks down there. As a public land hunter,
- 32:33Speaker 1: I know you're more aggressive than other guys. So are
- 32:36Speaker 1: you hunting mornings in late September and early October on
- 32:39Speaker 1: public land? So I actually did throw a sit this
- 32:43Speaker 1: morning after a buck um, but that was due to
- 32:46Speaker 1: trail cam data. He seemed to favor mornings actually, and
- 32:49Speaker 1: I'm not afraid to hunt mornings by by any means
- 32:52Speaker 1: early in the season. But I think the most important
- 32:55Speaker 1: thing to be doing now is scouting, even if you're
- 32:57Speaker 1: not hunting mornings. UM. Scouting is so critical this time
- 33:01Speaker 1: of year because the buck sign is just super concentrated,
- 33:05Speaker 1: and so if you don't know what's going on, you've
- 33:07Speaker 1: got to go find it um and potentially relocate the
- 33:10Speaker 1: books that you found in the summer. When you say scouting,
- 33:13Speaker 1: right now, besides rubs and scrapes, what are you looking
- 33:17Speaker 1: for on public land? So I would be looking. Uh,
- 33:20Speaker 1: as far as public land, I'm still kind of noting
- 33:22Speaker 1: maybe trucks and parking lots. UM tracks are another area
- 33:27Speaker 1: um that they you know, you can pick up a
- 33:29Speaker 1: big track. We just had a rainstorm come through, so
- 33:32Speaker 1: so you know, those mud tracks could be fresher than
- 33:35Speaker 1: than say, you know, in the prior weeks, Um, rubs
- 33:39Speaker 1: are are super concentrated. So that's kind of what I'm
- 33:41Speaker 1: looking for right now. That's I've seen a couple of
- 33:44Speaker 1: scrapes open up, but nothing tornched as as far as
- 33:49Speaker 1: scrapes are concerned. So I'm looking for clusters of rubs,
- 33:52Speaker 1: those better rubs, and trying to maybe locate a Buck's
- 33:55Speaker 1: core betting area this time of year going forward. Then
- 33:59Speaker 1: in the six week you're so, what do you think
- 34:00Speaker 1: that buck activity is going to be on a scale
- 34:03Speaker 1: of one to ten in Ohio? I think we're gonna
- 34:05Speaker 1: jump up maybe like till four point five. I mean,
- 34:07Speaker 1: at the end of the day, we're still early October. Um,
- 34:10Speaker 1: we do have temperatures in the upper thirties forties overnight,
- 34:14Speaker 1: so that you know, we do have and then highs
- 34:17Speaker 1: in the sixties, which is all lower than average temps.
- 34:22Speaker 1: But nothing crazy, No no big like fronts coming through
- 34:25Speaker 1: this week, and no big like ten degree temp drops.
- 34:28Speaker 1: So I'm not gonna get too optimistic. Um, So I'm
- 34:30Speaker 1: gonna give it a four four point five somewhere in there,
- 34:33Speaker 1: all right, buying good luck with your haunts. This year.
- 34:35Speaker 1: Thanks for joining me. Thanks, and that concludes this week's
- 34:39Speaker 1: episode of rut Fresh Radio. Thanks to Joe, Vince, Nate,
- 34:43Speaker 1: and Byron for joining me, and thank you guys for listening.
- 34:46Speaker 1: I hope you get a chance to take advantage of
- 34:48Speaker 1: this cold front and it's everything that Mark and I
- 34:51Speaker 1: have built it up to be. Good luck this weekend,
- 34:54Speaker 1: and the next time I talked to you, it'll be October.
- 34:58Speaker 1: Until then, stay wired to Hunt three.
