- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's the start of a new week.
- 0:15It's Monday, it's the 16th of March.
- 0:18And how good is it to have your company?
- 0:21I can tell you how good it is. It's very good.
- 0:23Thank you for tapping on play. Thank you for inviting me in so
- 0:26that you and I can do what we do.
- 0:28Friends, we can take another step forward reading through
- 0:31God's Word. And we have just begun the
- 0:35journey of the Gospel of Mark. We are only two chapters in.
- 0:40If you're just joining us, and I've got so much more goodness
- 0:43to go. We're going to spend the next
- 0:44few weeks just unfolding this incredible ministry of Jesus.
- 0:50And as Mark captures it, this first half is a roller coaster
- 0:54ride of incredible stuff going on, and then the second half
- 0:59really settles into Jesus teaching and that journey toward
- 1:03Golgotha where Jesus does what he came to do.
- 1:07So this is just a wonderful chance, friends, to go back and
- 1:10to spend some time in Jesus company, hearing his words and
- 1:13reading about his actions. Holy Spirit, just open us up to
- 1:18the character of Jesus, your character, so that we can learn
- 1:22more about you and that your heart can change ours to be more
- 1:26like you. All right friends, let's do it.
- 1:30Let's read together Mark Chapter 3.
- 1:43Jesus went into the synagogue again and noticed a man with a
- 1:46deformed hand. Since it was the Sabbath, Jesus
- 1:50enemies watched him closely. If he healed the man's hand,
- 1:54they planned to accuse him of working on the Sabbath.
- 1:57Jesus said to the man with the deformed hand, Come and stand in
- 2:00front of everyone. Then he turned to his critics
- 2:04and asked, Does the law permit good deeds on the Sabbath or is
- 2:08it a day for doing evil? Is this a day to save life or
- 2:12destroy it? But they wouldn't answer him.
- 2:15He looked around at them angrily and was deeply saddened by their
- 2:19hard hearts. Then he said to the man, Hold
- 2:23out your hand. So the man held out his hand,
- 2:26and it was restored that once the Pharisees went away and met
- 2:30with the supporters of Herod to plot how to kill Jesus.
- 2:36Jesus went out to the lake with his disciples, and a large crowd
- 2:39followed him. They came from all over Galilee,
- 2:42Judea, Jerusalem, Idemia, from east of the Jordan, and even
- 2:48from as far north as Tyre and Sidon.
- 2:51The news about his miracles had spread far and wide, and vast
- 2:55numbers of people came to see him.
- 2:57Jesus instructed his disciples to have a boat ready so the
- 3:01crowd would not crush him. He had healed many people that
- 3:04day, so all the sick people eagerly pushed forward to touch
- 3:08him, and whenever those possessed by evil spirits caught
- 3:11sight of him, the spirits would throw them to the ground in
- 3:14front of him, shrieking. You are the Son of God.
- 3:18But Jesus sternly commanded the spirits not to reveal who he
- 3:22was. Afterward, Jesus went up on a
- 3:26mountain and called out the ones he wanted to go with him, and
- 3:30they came to him. Then he appointed 12 of them and
- 3:34called them his apostles. They were to accompany him and
- 3:38he would send them out to preach, giving them authority to
- 3:41cast out demons. These are the 12 he chose Simon,
- 3:46who he named Peter, James and John, the sons of Zebedee.
- 3:51But Jesus nicknamed them sons of Thunder.
- 3:55Andrew Philip Bartholomew Matthew Thomas James, Son of
- 4:01Altheus, Thaddeus, Simon the Zealot Judas Iscariot, who later
- 4:08betrayed him. One time Jesus entered a house
- 4:12and the crowds began to gather again.
- 4:15Soon he and his disciples couldn't even find time to eat.
- 4:19When his family heard what was happening, they tried to take
- 4:22him away. He's out of his mind, they said.
- 4:25But the teachers of religious law who had arrived from
- 4:27Jerusalem said he is possessed by Satan, the Prince of demons.
- 4:32That's where he gets the power to cast out demons.
- 4:36Jesus called them over and responded with an illustration.
- 4:40How can Satan cast out Satan? He asked.
- 4:44A Kingdom divided by civil war will collapse.
- 4:47Similarly, a family splintered by feuding will fall apart.
- 4:52If Satan is divided and fights against himself, how can he
- 4:56stand? He would never survive.
- 4:59Let me illustrate this further. Who is powerful enough to enter
- 5:03the House of a strong man and plunder his goods?
- 5:06Only someone even stronger, someone who could tie him up and
- 5:10then plunder his house. I tell you the truth, all sin
- 5:15and blasphemy can be forgiven, but anyone who blasphemes the
- 5:19Holy Spirit will never be forgiven.
- 5:22This is a sin with eternal consequences.
- 5:25He told them this because they were saying he's possessed by an
- 5:29evil spirit. Then Jesus mother and brothers
- 5:34came to see him. They stood outside and sent word
- 5:37for him to come out and talk with them.
- 5:40There was a crowd sitting around Jesus and someone said your
- 5:43mother and brothers are outside asking for you.
- 5:46Jesus replied who is my mother? Who are my brothers?
- 5:51Then he looked at those around him and said, look, these are my
- 5:55mother and brothers. Anyone who does God's will is my
- 5:59brother and sister and mother. Our Lord, as we read how people
- 6:14responded to you, there was just no doubt they could see straight
- 6:19away by who you are and what you do that you are a game changer.
- 6:25Lord, I pray that our hearts would not be subdued by the
- 6:29passing of time from those days to now.
- 6:32That our hearts would not be dulled by the many times that
- 6:37we've heard these wonderful stories and your incredible
- 6:39words, but that your message and your words would land afresh in
- 6:44our hearts. And we would be arrested by the
- 6:48amazing news that you bring, that you call us your brothers
- 6:52and sisters. Jesus, you are the Son of the
- 6:58Almighty. You are God himself, and here
- 7:02you declare that you are part of our family.
- 7:05Oh, we love you and we're so grateful for the way that you
- 7:08change everything. And so we lift you up and pray
- 7:12all of this in your almighty name, Amen.
