- 0:00What's going on everybody. Hope you're doing well out there. I wanted to

- 0:07twenty seventh, twenty twenty four. That's right Memorial Day. By the time

- 0:13hope you enjoy the show. All right, folks, welcome to Table Talk
- 0:34here at the Philadelphia Sports Table podcast show, the longest running weekly Philly sports
- 0:38podcast show in the world, eleven years strong. We've got a great discussion
- 0:42coming your way here on Table Talk this week. We've got a good friend
- 0:45of the podcast joining us in just a few seconds. He was on our
- 0:49Eagles postgame shows a lot during this past NFL season and Eagles season. Can't
- 0:54wait to get to this discussion in just a bit. We're gonna be getting
- 0:57into this Philadelphia seventy six ers off season first, reflecting on where this front
- 1:03office is, how they have done and performed over the years. Have they
- 1:07given Joe ellenmbiid the tools to really succeed in terms of the playoff picture and
- 1:14postseason year after year, and really, you know what's gonna happen with this
- 1:18team in free agency and the NBA Draft coming up. We got a great
- 1:22discussion, let's get right to it. Joining us this week here on table
- 1:26Talk. We absolutely love talking to him and also love listening to the honorable
- 1:30mentioned podcast. I listen on Apple Podcasts, subscribe on whatever platform you are
- 1:34on. He's over on threads as well at Politidope, and he's one of
- 1:38my favorites out there in the sports media world. We've got the one and
- 1:44only Matt Rodgers. Hey doing, Buddy good good to be considered in the
- 1:47in the sports media world that's not normally you know. Also, Matt Rodgers
- 1:53is also known as the guy who does Philly sports media. So thanks for
- 1:57having me on. Absolutely Buddy, it's great being able to see you here
- 2:00over zoom as we're recording this. Great being able to talk to you during
- 2:04this Sixers off season, and as we start the discussion here, Matt,
- 2:07you know, I've been doing a lot of reflection on this Sixers team,
- 2:12who they have been over the years, where they may be going in the
- 2:15future, what's happening right now with this front office, and my thoughts go
- 2:19back to one individual, and it's Darryl Moury, you know, because when
- 2:23we reflect on Daryl Mory's time with the Sixers, I'm wondering do you think
- 2:27he has done all he can to put the necessary pieces around Joel Embiid.
- 2:31And I asked this too with an understanding of knowing that unforeseen issues have been
- 2:36the reason why the Sixers, you know, at times, keep getting knocked
- 2:38out of the postseason early injuries, just different things happening with this team again,
- 2:46unforeseen circumstances at times, and that's the world of sports in general.
- 2:50So I'm wondering, do you think Daryl Moray has done all he can to
- 2:53put the necessary pieces, like I asked around Joel embid Or has Daryl Moury
- 2:58not done the best job in terms of holding around Joel here? What are
- 3:00your thoughts as we're moving forward here? It's a to be determined. I
- 3:06think you know, when you have me on here, we talk about the
- 3:08Birds, we give guys grades just to you know, just to not to
- 3:13linger on the point too much. I think overall, Daryl moy is like
- 3:15a B plus GM. I think it's a bit of a two be determined
- 3:19right now because I think the last off season they made the determination that they
- 3:23were going to try to get leave themselves the flexibility in this off season to
- 3:28do whatever it is, kind of like with the Phillies. They said that
- 3:30we're not going to load up and do a bunch of potentially reckless or desperate
- 3:36things in the off season. We'll wait, we'll see how it looks at
- 3:38the All Star break. Now, you know, we didn't come here to
- 3:40talk about the Phills, but that's an interesting calculation. The Sixers said that
- 3:46it's going to be the summer of twenty twenty four when we decide what we're
- 3:49going to do. So I think in the in the next you know,
- 3:53twenty four months, will know, we'll have a verdict on Daryl Mory.
- 3:55We're overall, I would say Daryl Moriy is a pretty good GM. I
- 3:59think he really does tinker around the edges. Buddy healed. I think I
- 4:05think Buddy healed ended up. He looked good on paper. I think I
- 4:11put that more on Buddy on on it not working out in Philly. Yeah,
- 4:15And I think, you know, going back to Buddy coming to the
- 4:17team, you know those first what was it, first four games, first
- 4:20four or five or six games, and he was just absolutely on fire,
- 4:25kind of took a little bit of a nose dive after that. But you
- 4:27know what Darryl Moury saw and again, like you said, on paper,
- 4:31I think it was a good move. It's a move that needed to be
- 4:33made at that time. And again, unforeseen circumstances what I was asking about
- 4:39initially. It's like nobody saw that Buddy Heald was necessarily going to be non
- 4:43existent towards the end of the season, especially during the postseason. Nobody would
- 4:46have guessed that if they did, if they had a crystal ball or a
- 4:49magic wand then I don't think Daryl Murray would have actually made the decision that
- 4:54Anthony Meltin. Yeah, who knew the Anthony Moultain would have the bad back.
- 4:58Yes, I mean you can and be trick. I always say that
- 5:00when I get opportunity to come on one of these shows. Just you know,
- 5:03it's not just like you know, for a particular sport, you tweak
- 5:08your back, you know, getting up from your office desk listening to the
- 5:11you know, pst in a second, it could be tricky for a few
- 5:15months for you and you're not competing. Most likely, if you're listening to
- 5:17this podcast, you're most likely not competing at championship level. I mean the
- 5:21Anthony Melton is a three and D guy who could have known that that he
- 5:27was gonna take it, And it's not, you know, for lack of
- 5:30trying. He's trying to be out there, but his play he can't be
- 5:33who who you need him to be. And so it is a lot of
- 5:36unforeseen I think some of what was foreseen, and we'll get into some of
- 5:42that is the lack of productivity from Tobias Harris, but I think he inherited
- 5:49Tobias Harris if I'm correct. Yes, Yeah, So Tobias Harris zero points
- 5:54in a playoff game fantastic. Like you said, we'll probably end up getting
- 5:58into him a bit here. But as we're moving along with a discussion here,
- 6:03Matt, you know, at this point the Clippers are unwilling to offer
- 6:06Paul George more than they are willing more than they gave Kawhi Leonard three years,
- 6:12one hundred and fifty two point three million dollars. So let's get into
- 6:15the discussion of Paul George possibly coming to the Philadelphia six Ers seventy six ers,
- 6:20because it really seems as those Sixers front office seems like they do,
- 6:25from all indications, want to sign Paul George during free agency, which would
- 6:29probably look like a four year, two hundred and twelve million dollar max deal.
- 6:33So I guess my question for you is, and as as somebody who
- 6:38follows this team and somebody who is a huge, huge, huge fan as
- 6:43well, do you believe it's gonna happen? And second, do you think
- 6:45Paul George commands that kind of contract at this point in his career? What
- 6:49are your thoughts. I it's one of those where I'm hoping that this is
- 6:55just smoking mirrors because I you know, and I don't want to slam the
- 6:58guy. I think Paul George has been a solid, very good NBA player.
- 7:03I just don't think Paul George would I think is a thirty four years
- 7:06old something thirty four to thirty five years old the back half of his career.
- 7:11He's not the answer. And I'm not making an iris a joke or
- 7:15anything for the folks trying to be plenty or anything, but seriously, I
- 7:18mean, this is the back half of his career and I would much rather
- 7:25I'll leave a dot dot dot there. There's Jeff wanted to get into later.
- 7:29Somebody who somebody who would fit more in the mold of what you're looking
- 7:33for from Paul George. I think you give Paul George that kind of contract,
- 7:39you load up this salary cap and you're going all in. I don't
- 7:42think you need to make that drastic of a move, and I don't think
- 7:45he's going to cash out like that. I mean, he's not He's not
- 7:48a he's not a Max player in that way. He's not a guy if
- 7:51Max he's out that you can depend on Paul George. You might still get
- 7:56sweat if if if one of the big two are out for the for the
- 8:00sixers, it's not He's not going to be able to fill that void in
- 8:03BA. He is legitimately a third option at this point, and there's you
- 8:07can do a lot better with your money than Paul George in my opinion.
- 8:11I've gone on record on this podcast platform saying, you know, yeah,
- 8:16it'd be it'd be okay to have Paul George here. But like I said,
- 8:20I've gone on record to say I kind of feel like, nah,
- 8:24like all right, all right, you know, like and you outlined it
- 8:26perfectly. He's at the tail end of his career. Does he really command
- 8:31that type of money, which the Sixers do have. But I don't know.
- 8:35I think, Derek, because you have it, you don't have to
- 8:37spend it, by the way, post right exactly exactly, you don't have
- 8:41to do it. And I guess that leads to the next, you know
- 8:43question I have. The ultimate question is is Paul George and how he plays
- 8:48on the court the missing piece for the Sixers to advance through the playoffs?
- 8:52I mean, from what you essentially just said just in terms of that contract,
- 8:56probably not, because if Joel Embiid is me seeing, if Tyrese Maxie
- 9:01is missing or both at the same time, I don't think he's going to
- 9:03be able to put the team on its back, whether it's later in the
- 9:07season or even early in the season to get the necessary wins. Like I
- 9:11just I just can't see it. As as interesting as it would be.
- 9:16I don't want to pay that type of money. I don't want the Sixers
- 9:18paying that type of money. I should say, bringing in somebody again on
- 9:20the tail end of his career where I'm feeling a little meh about it.
- 9:24So what are your thoughts here? And this is the Yeah, absolutely,
- 9:26that's and that's the tough thing about doing this kind of thing. Jeff,
- 9:28it's a lot of fun. I always tell you always, you know,
- 9:31it's a great release for me in terms of what I do. Uh,
- 9:33But that's a tough thing about about, you know, really trying to call
- 9:37balls and strikes and watching the games and really trying to give answers, legitimate
- 9:41answers on these things, because you know it comes off as you know,
- 9:46you know, Matt Rogers or whoever blank slams this player and says that they're
- 9:50not worth the money. If he's sure, he could be worth the money.
- 9:56But for what the Sixers are trying to do right now, there are
- 9:58teams who are trying to do and he fits in line with that. He
- 10:01can go get four for two tohweight somewhere else, just not Philadelphia right now
- 10:07because you hamstring so much of the and and I don't know if they're exactly
- 10:11in a win now do they do they think the window is two years from
- 10:13now? You think the years the windows two or three years from now?
- 10:16The answer is not, Paul George flat out yeah, yeah, you're absolutely
- 10:20correct. Well, I'm wondering as we're looking at free agency, a lot
- 10:24of us have read a lot of articles. You know, we've seen the
- 10:28tweets or posts out there with regard to some you know or threads, I
- 10:33should say, because I know you're on threads, buddy, and I know,
- 10:37yes, we've seen a lot of the names that are out there.
- 10:39So let's get into some of these, because again, the Sixers do have
- 10:43some money to spend, So thoughts on the following players. Let's start off
- 10:48the discussion with Jimmy Butler. Do you think that is a rational logical decision
- 10:54and choice for Darryl Moore to bring back to this team again at this in
- 11:00his career, the type of player he has become. We all have a
- 11:03lot of nostalgia about Jimmy Butler in Sixers Nation, But do you think having
- 11:09Jimmy Butler back on this team is a move that the Sixers should make.
- 11:15The Herald on the they wrote recently about how much he would be commanding that
- 11:20he's expecting a contract. The discussions are in the neighborhood of two years,
- 11:24one hundred and thirteen. At that no way in the world, gosh,
- 11:28no way, we're even in the same zip code or hemisphere. Jimmy Butler
- 11:35wants to come for you know, maybe twenty five and you fit in and
- 11:39be you know that fourth fifth. Sure it'd be great. I was going
- 11:43to say thirty for two years. Thirty for two years, I'd take that.
- 11:46Well, of course, you yes, yes, but yeah, he
- 11:50expects a lot of money and he's a name, and he's you know,
- 11:54shown up and been, you know, the guy taking his team to the
- 11:56NBA finals. So sure he can command that, and it's possible that he
- 12:01gets somewhere in that neighborhood. I just don't think that that makes any sense
- 12:03at all from the Sixers standpoint. Now, I'm wondering brandon Ingram. I'm
- 12:09wondering what that may look like for this team. I think it's an interesting
- 12:13discussion piece because of the type of player he is, what the Sixers need.
- 12:18What are your thoughts on brandon Ingram possibly coming here. I think he's
- 12:22a good player. You would have to tell me more about what the rest
- 12:28of the plan is, because I think there are some limitations. I mean,
- 12:33he's very, very skinny, and so sometimes if you want to play
- 12:35him as you know, a stretch five, you know there are some limitations.
- 12:39And so what CBS quoted his number, you know in the neighborhood of
- 12:46four years, two oh eight. Yeah, I'd be willing to have the
- 12:50conversation. But if you say, Matt, pick yes or pick no,
- 12:54I'm picking no. No, I'm comfortable, and I walk away, and
- 12:56I'll walk away from the table and not be too uncomfortable. I look at
- 13:01his stats, and look, I do look at him as a versatile type
- 13:05of forward, six foot eight, he's one time All Stars. We know,
- 13:09completed his eighth NBA season sixty four games with the Pelicans. He averaged
- 13:15twenty point eight points, five point two rebounds, him four point three assists,
- 13:18and he shot thirty five percent from beyond the arc. I don't see
- 13:22that as terrible, but I also don't necessarily see it as Okay, we
- 13:26got to get this guy on this team again. A lot of players out
- 13:31there in my in my mind kind of fit that Brandon Ingram mold in a
- 13:39way where it's like, okay, absolutely could yeah, could he really?
- 13:43I mean maybe he could be a fallback plan for the sixers or so.
- 13:45But that's how I view Brandon Ingram. A really good player, but I
- 13:50don't know how incredibly special he is, if that makes sense. No,
- 13:54No, because he's could well, I think you do know, and I
- 13:58think you know that the answer is that he's not. He's a poor man's
- 14:01Kevin Durant, and I'm not, you know, trying to dismerg him,
- 14:05because that's that's a hell of a player. Yeah, but at the end
- 14:09of the day, even even the real Kevin Durant, does that get this
- 14:13team over the top? Now? Right? So no, I I if
- 14:20I had to pick one, I'm gonna go with no. But Brandon Ingram
- 14:24is a good player. I'm not saying he's a B player to B plus
- 14:26player. I think we're getting near the peak of what we'll see from Brandon
- 14:31Ingram, which is on sunnights, a thirty point score and makes it look
- 14:35pretty easy. I just don't know. I would feel more comfortable now if
- 14:39you say pick b I or pick Paul George. I'm picking Brendan Ingram and
- 14:43I'm very comfortable with that as well. So if Joelle is out in a
- 14:48playoff game, do I feel comfortable that Brandon Ingram can drop thirty? Yeah?
- 14:52I do think. Okay, all right, next guy on the list
- 14:56here, I want to get your thoughts on because I believe he's intriguing and
- 15:00that is DeMar DeRozan from the Chicago Bulls. Here look, Daryl Mory held
- 15:07a press conference where he mentioned how the Sixers are going to be looking to
- 15:11add a productive wing player this offseason, and between DeMar de Rozan's ability and
- 15:18his improved playmaking over the years, he could be a player that Philly gets
- 15:22in the market for. But you know, we know that DeMar Rosen has
- 15:28kind of made his intentions clear about what he wants, you know, with
- 15:31that with the next team or contract or wherever he's going to be going in
- 15:35the future. What do you think about DeMar DeRozan. I really like it.
- 15:39I think at the number that he'll probably command, I think at the
- 15:43point of his career, the role I think you can you can fit DeMar
- 15:48de Rozan into. I mean you can fit Demart de Rozan on a lot
- 15:50of teams in the league. I mean there are thirty teams in the league.
- 15:54He's damn near fits and will play well on twenty five. I mean
- 15:58unless he's shoving people to this side. So as your two guard, you
- 16:02let MAXI run the one, DeRozan at the two and beat at the five,
- 16:06and you fill out the rest. I really do think that DeMar Derozen
- 16:10would be a good ad for this team at at a really reasonable number.
- 16:14Again, I got all these sports not quoted at three years, one thirty.
- 16:18I'm very I'm very interested. I thinkmar Deroza would be a good a
- 16:22good pick up, absolutely, and that kind of leads us now into you
- 16:26know where, uh, you know, possibly looking at some role players.
- 16:30And a guy that I'm thinking could potentially be a good role player for the
- 16:33Sixers team is Malik Monk. What are your thoughts on Malik Monk and what
- 16:37he could possibly bring this team. I'm also a big I'm big on Malik
- 16:42Monk. I think that's also a good pickup too. I think he's a
- 16:47good, you know, spacer, floor spacer that the team needs that sorely.
- 16:51Even with the advancement in the three point shot from Tyrese MAXI I think
- 16:56having Elak Monk in the mix there will really space things. You gotta have
- 17:00space. I think what's also important though, is whatever they do, and
- 17:06I'll get to some of these things later, is you do need some rebounding.
- 17:10Yeah, so Malik Monk doesn't fix that, but he does fix some
- 17:14of the other issues. So, folks, if you're listening just a sneak
- 17:18peek, don't expect Malik Monk to, you know, be a triple double
- 17:19type of guy, right, He's a guy who's going to create other opportunities
- 17:23for other guys on the team. I gotta tell you, Matt, I
- 17:26love how you just talked about rebounding because we saw time and time again,
- 17:30game after game during the postseason how rebounding was an issue. It's atrocious.
- 17:37It drives me crazy, it was. It drives me crazy because it is
- 17:40one of the fundamentals of the sport of basketball that these guys learn when they're
- 17:45playing high school or even even when they're in the middle school, for God's
- 17:48sake, in terms of rebounds, boxing out for the love of God,
- 17:53and this team needs some talent in order to actually be effect the rebounders,
- 18:00rebounders and offensive rebounds as well. I mean how many times, I mean,
- 18:04oh my gosh, Yeah, he's a bit. Joel's a big guy
- 18:08and he's able to you know, sky over and get ten twelve rebounds in
- 18:11his sleep. But he's not a great rebounder. He's not a he's not
- 18:17a guy who's you know, clearing guys out and the team has just for
- 18:22years, especially even in games that matter. Watching the game, the ball,
- 18:26the offensive rebounds should never especially with like less than a minute left of
- 18:30the game, touch the ground. I mean what you let guys get three
- 18:36possessions on the biggest possession of the game. You're supposed to you got it.
- 18:38The only way you close. You make the guy take a tough shot,
- 18:41he clanks it, and then they get a rebound. You missed the
- 18:45rebound, they get another shot. This is stuff that I taught to fifth
- 18:51graders like a decade ago, Like, hey, you want to limit the
- 18:56other team to at least two shots? Guys? Maybe if you don't get
- 19:00that personal absolutely absolutely Again, folks, we're talking to Matt Rogers from the
- 19:06Honorable Mention podcast. Follow him on threads at politidope. He is a great,
- 19:11great follow like myself, very involved in public service, and uh,
- 19:15you're gonna get some fun public service political stuff as well as some great sports
- 19:21takes here and there. So as we're still talking about free agency here,
- 19:25buddy, I mean, are are there are there any other players that you
- 19:27would like to see coming to the Sixers in free agency? Maybe perhaps some
- 19:33role players, somebody else, maybe Lebron James. Who knows. What are
- 19:37your thoughts here? Oh, I would love Lebron James. I mean that's
- 19:41that's that's like Christmas. But it's not happening. Lebron's going to stay a
- 19:45lake Er. I would, I would, I would, I would bet.
- 19:48I mean, I would love it. I love some of those clickbait
- 19:49articles that are out there. You know what I mean, Lebron's gonna be
- 19:52coming to this. Yeah he actually does iron I mean, yeah, yeah,
- 19:59we embrace you. You know, you can go back to Kobe's you
- 20:02know, you played with the Lakers, have that Philly connection. Come to
- 20:04Philly. Yes, be pretty cool. I love it. But in a
- 20:10serious note, I really think that Ognobi, you get og Annob, you
- 20:17get Demarta Rosen. That's a great pairing right there, that that kind of
- 20:21solidifies the Wings. Ognobi was a big problem for the Sixers in the regular
- 20:26season and in the postseason. You take him away. I mean he was
- 20:27on the Rocket the I'm sorry, the Raptors. Raptors. Yeah, he
- 20:33was a problem on the Raptors in a good way. Uh, and then
- 20:36on the on the Knicks. I mean those games a lot of times ogn
- 20:40Andobi would provide that spark plug play. I mean, there are a lot
- 20:44of guys who made great plays, but Ognobi is able to just de up
- 20:49you know, pretty much one through four. And the way that the NBA
- 20:52has played played now, he can guard one through four. It's so important
- 20:56to have a guy like that. He's still as sending his kind tracking out
- 21:00it. I don't believe going to be two crazy four year one point fifty.
- 21:04Uh. New York was twenty six and six with Ananobi in the lineup
- 21:07last year, including the postseason. So I would love to have him.
- 21:11I'd love to have him too. Uh. And it's a good segue into
- 21:17then what happens with this team during the NBA Draft as well as we're closing
- 21:22our discussion here, Matt. I mean, last week on the podcast here,
- 21:25my co host Eric and I we talked about what the Sixers should do
- 21:27with their first round draft pick in this upcoming NBA draft. I mean,
- 21:33there's a lot of good thoughts out there as to whether or not they should
- 21:36trade the pick and continue to build the team through various other acquisitions or try
- 21:41to, you know, throw something against the wall see if it sticks.
- 21:45I mean, it's certainly not the best looking draft class. As many of
- 21:48us know, tons of teams are probably going to be wanting to trade their
- 21:52picks as well. What do you think the Sixers should do in this draft
- 21:56with that first round pick? What are your thoughts here to close this out?
- 22:00Generally, I'm a big fan of just trading back and love us.
- 22:04You're you're in love with somebody, or you have a real position of need.
- 22:08I'm just always I don't really believe in the NBA draft picks. Let
- 22:11the other teams pick them, train them up, make sure that we'll find
- 22:15out if we're good. I'll go get over it in a couple of years
- 22:17with some of my good guys or some other picks that I stashed. So
- 22:19usually that's the way I like to do it. But uh, I think
- 22:23the guy the center, and I'm gonna mess up this name, so no
- 22:27offense, you know intended. It's a vess Mesi, the center from Baylor.
- 22:34He's he's a center more in the mold of like a Clint Capella guy,
- 22:38which I think too earlier our conversation about rebounding. He's the kind of
- 22:42guy that we need. We need a guy who's going to be a rim
- 22:45roller. You need that kind of guy in the NBA. It'll be interesting
- 22:51to see how he's able out to play out of the short role. You
- 22:55catch it like Draymond Green, you don't roll all the way to the basket.
- 22:57You short roll, and then you might make a quick decision to get
- 23:02it out to a playmaker or hit the mid range. It'd be interesting to
- 23:04see. But I really do believe that we need to give Joel Embiid the
- 23:08freedom to basically play as a big four, big a huge three. I
- 23:15don't think I think to our point earlier about the you know, deficiencies with
- 23:18rebounding, I think we need to stop trying to hope that Joel Embiid is
- 23:23gonna be able to one year seriously be in enough shape. He's gonna be
- 23:27hobbled. If we get to the finish line, he's gonna be crying,
- 23:30he's gonna be hobbled, he's gonna have drop forty. That's the way it's
- 23:33gonna go. And so you have to take all of that into account.
- 23:37How do the Sixers get to that place that we're gonna go with Joel and
- 23:41build around some of the things because he's he is an amazing player, but
- 23:45there are things in his game that you have to build around in order to
- 23:49offset because now at this point it's clear that he does need that help,
- 23:56even if he wins a championship. Now, he's one of the great players,
- 23:59but you know, he's not a he's not a Kobe, he's not
- 24:00a you know, a Lebron type of guy. He's a great player,
- 24:03but he's the kind of guy who you have to really and Biggs are like
- 24:07that. But so so, a backup big is really important. Say all
- 24:11that to say, a backup big is one of those big needs. I
- 24:15absolutely love the way we ended the conversation there because I totally agree with you.
- 24:18It's absolutely necessary as this team is moving forward here, Matt, It's
- 24:22necessary. Yeah, Yeah, absolutely it is. That's gonna do it for
