Transcript
- 0:03Alright.
- 0:04Well, welcome in to another exciting episode of the scene.
- 0:06We are on the bus here with Aurelia and Alyssa Ruffin.
- 0:09Welcome to the show, ladies.
- 0:11Thank
- 0:11you.
- 0:12Well, we are here.
- 0:14It is still Josie Music Awards weekend.
- 0:16I'm gonna call it even though it's a Tuesday night now, but celebrating a big win for you,
- 0:21obviously.
- 0:22And your your first time bringing your daughter to the awards show with you, and you're having
- 0:27a huge week here in Nashville.
- 0:28So Yeah.
- 0:29Thanks so much for taking a little bit of time for me today.
- 0:31Thanks for having me.
- 0:32I appreciate it.
- 0:32Yeah.
- 0:33So before we get too far in, obviously, you you were nominated and you won this weekend.
- 0:39What was the category that you won in?
- 0:40Social impact song of the year for the sacrifice.
- 0:43And that's such a big one.
- 0:44Right?
- 0:45I I was so impressed with the people who, you know, had this this social impact video.
- 0:49Tell us a little bit about the song and the meaning behind it.
- 0:53So my husband has been serving for twenty years in the military.
- 0:57He was air force.
- 0:59He's space force now.
- 1:01So he's he's been in.
- 1:03I've been in military life.
- 1:04And, you know, we go through these moments in time where he comes home, and he's gotta deploy
- 1:11overseas and leave the family.
- 1:13And I have tell the kids, or we have to tell the kids together or whatever it is.
- 1:16So he's he's gone.
- 1:18And even without deployments, you know, they have trainings that they go to, TDYs and
- 1:24schooling and all these different things.
- 1:27So there's moments in time where he's absent.
- 1:31And I wanted to write a song from those experiences, not just from the military spouse
- 1:39perspective, but also from the perspective of the military member of veterans who've gone
- 1:46through this and the families affected.
- 1:49So the kids, you know, even parents.
- 1:52So that's where the song was inspired from,
- 1:55a a
- 1:56true moment from my personal experience as a military spouse.
- 2:00Yeah.
- 2:00And I think a lot of us and obviously, you you know me a little bit to know that we have
- 2:04Operation Combatty Veteran Suicide in our veteran community means so much to us.
- 2:08But I I think a lot of people forget that it it's not just the veterans that we need to
- 2:12thank.
- 2:12It's their families who really make the sacrifices.
- 2:15You know, maybe not the ultimate sacrifice, but plenty of them.
- 2:20Time away from the family and time away from your loved ones and the strain that it puts on
- 2:25the spouses to maintain the household as a essentially a single parent in that time,
- 2:30right, and raising kids.
- 2:31And for people like you that have you know, your husband's made a career out of this, you
- 2:35know, and it it's not it's not easy.
- 2:39Right?
- 2:40It's never easy.
- 2:41So I I love that not only did your son get nominated, but that you won because it brings
- 2:45that awareness to the situations that a lot of us just don't think about.
- 2:48Unless you're in it or you know military families and you know that situation, you're
- 2:53really not gonna think about that and the sacrifices that are made in the home as well.
- 2:57Right.
- 2:57Correct.
- 2:58Yeah.
- 2:58So awesome.
- 3:00Awesome.
- 3:00What was it like up there on the stage?
- 3:02It's amazing.
- 3:03You know?
- 3:04And and I I went and got to go in the circle, but this this moment was just more special and
- 3:11very personal to me.
- 3:12And Aurelia was with, so I brought her up on stage with me.
- 3:16She got to stand there and be by my side.
- 3:20Shaking more than you were.
- 3:21Yeah.
- 3:21In that moment.
- 3:22Yeah.
- 3:22Nerve racking looking out at all those people.
- 3:24Right?
- 3:25Well and you're down here because you guys are you know, not only I I know mom is in the
- 3:30recording studio and and doing some work, but you're also trying to launch your music career
- 3:34now and getting that experience for you.
- 3:36So, I mean, not that you didn't earn it because you did earn it.
- 3:40You you lived the life that the story Yes.
- 3:42You know, was about that won the award.
- 3:44So you had some, you know, some input into that.
- 3:47But now as you get ready to, you know, launch your own career, does stepping out there kind
- 3:53of does it encourage you and excite you to say, hey.
- 3:56I want this for myself?
- 3:58It definitely inspired me
- 3:59a lot.
- 4:01Yeah.
- 4:01And how could it not?
- 4:02Right?
- 4:02Yeah.
- 4:03Stepping onto that iconic stage and to feel that I mean, that energy, that's the shaking.
- 4:07Right?
- 4:07The energy that's
- 4:08on that stage and history of it.
- 4:10Pure adrenaline.
- 4:11Yeah.
- 4:11Feels good, doesn't it?
- 4:13Yeah.
- 4:13I've been an adrenaline junkie in this business for twenty five years now, so I feel you in
- 4:18every way.
- 4:19You know?
- 4:19I stepped on stage for my first time with my dad's band when I was maybe 14 years old.
- 4:24And same thing.
- 4:25I mean, quivering, and I and I got all worked up because I forgot some of the words to this
- 4:29song.
- 4:30And then I realized that, you know, I was singing a Grateful Dead song to, like, three
- 4:33people in the crowd that knew it.
- 4:35Right?
- 4:36Everyone else.
- 4:36Because I was in front of my whole hometown.
- 4:38My first gig was a July 4 celebration.
- 4:41So it a was pretty big deal in front of my whole hometown, but nobody else knew all those
- 4:45words, and everybody thought I did wonderful.
- 4:47Right?
- 4:48And it it was turning all of that energy into a positive and into the performance and and
- 4:53really focusing on just that moment.
- 4:56And those moments turn into more moments, and it just keeps growing and growing.
- 5:00They do.
- 5:01And I and I told her, you know, like, even though I had been out there before, it every
- 5:05time is different.
- 5:06Every every experience, it's you're in that moment particularly.
- 5:11And this time was you know, like, I was up there, and I forgot who I was thinking.
- 5:16And I I Yeah.
- 5:17Johnny I saw that.
- 5:18I love that.
- 5:19And I love that that's going to show up on the videos when they post them on the ACN network
- 5:24and the American Country Network that the Josie's will air on at a later date.
- 5:29I loved it.
- 5:30I loved that you took a little peek up there in your yellow feathered dress, and you looked
- 5:34absolute absolutely stunning.
- 5:36And I know that you paid the price for it as well.
- 5:39I did.
- 5:40Getting to talk to you out in out in the drink line, and it was just so fun to share the
- 5:45moment with fellow Midwest country music organization members and people that we've
- 5:49really grown to to love.
- 5:51Right?
- 5:51Samantha Grimes was there.
- 5:52She won an award as well.
- 5:53Yeah.
- 5:54And it it was just a real joy to watch so many of my friends, you know, especially Jasmine
- 5:59Kane who won later in the night and put on an absolutely iconic performance She did.
- 6:04Did.
- 6:04Inside of that grand old opera.
- 6:06Yeah.
- 6:06I think she might be knocking on the door here before we finish this interview possibly.
- 6:09So we'll see we'll see if we get her in here at the same time.
- 6:12Last time we did an interview, somebody else popped in too.
- 6:14So you never know what's gonna happen here on the bus.
- 6:16We are filming this live.
- 6:18We are not in a studio.
- 6:19We are literally on the bus and an iconic bus at that.
- 6:22You have a George Jones story, and I don't think that we can sit here without telling
- 6:27that.
- 6:27So I just kinda wanna give you a chance to to tell us you don't have to get into the details
- 6:31necessarily, but give us give us the short synopsis of what happened.
- 6:35Okay.
- 6:35A short short synopsis.
- 6:37I was a angry teenager.
- 6:40I was trying to walk home to cool off, and I decided to take a shortcut.
- 6:44And I hopped a fence and got the cops called on me, and it happened to be George Jones' private
- 6:51property.
- 6:52So
- 6:53And now here you are on his bus, and, obviously, it's no longer his, but I think it
- 6:59will always be his.
- 7:00Is it this is what we call a full circle moment.
- 7:02Yes.
- 7:02It is.
- 7:03I feel like there was a lot of those at this at this Josie Awards.
- 7:06And this was my first time in Nashville and my first time at the Opry, but it's also a huge
- 7:10validation for me and what I'm doing with this podcast and what we've been building in our
- 7:14brand that we are I don't wanna say that maybe we're essential to it, but we add a lot of
- 7:20value to not just this award show, but to the music community as a whole.
- 7:24And I think in some ways, I needed a little bit of that validation this week to see where I
- 7:28stood on the biggest stage in, you know, my career by far and the biggest stage that I may
- 7:33ever see.
- 7:34I I don't know that it gets bigger than the grandola.
- 7:36I mean, maybe the Grammys or something like that, but I'm not necessarily interested in
- 7:39that next level of the music business.
- 7:42Like, to be that big of a star or or to work with people that are that big of stars doesn't
- 7:47necessarily interest me.
- 7:48I would much rather work and be surrounded by people that understand the grind that it is,
- 7:53that understand the the connection that we're trying to make.
- 7:58And I feel like, especially with your song and get this a new song that you had written
- 8:02recently?
- 8:03I wrote it a couple years ago.
- 8:06It released last year.
- 8:07Okay.
- 8:07So it's still pretty fresh Yep.
- 8:09And still out there connecting with people, and this is going to give more notoriety out there.
- 8:13And there's gonna be so many military families that listen to this and go, she's telling our
- 8:17story.
- 8:17Absolutely.
- 8:18And That's the hope.
- 8:19Yeah.
- 8:20Well and but that's why we write music.
- 8:22Right.
- 8:22Right?
- 8:22Is that we're trying to get out a bit of ourselves to throw it out there into the world
- 8:25and see who else resonates with.
- 8:27Yeah.
- 8:27And and that's what this music business and doing it is all about.
- 8:31I know you've been doing this full time for quite a while.
- 8:34We won't say exactly how long, but you've been chasing this career, and you kinda got that
- 8:39from your mother.
- 8:40So you you talked about the George Jones story, but you were here actually because your mother
- 8:45was pursuing a career in the record industry way back then.
- 8:49And now you're here with your daughter, Aurelia, and she's beginning hers.
- 8:53You talk about full circle.
- 8:55Right?
- 8:55Full circle.
- 8:56That's great.
- 8:57What's what's kind of the inspiration for you to to to not just pursue it for yourself, but
- 9:02to also try to make that, you know, a reality for your daughter as well?
- 9:07I think the shift for me musically was not pursuing it for myself.
- 9:14It actually kinda shifted more towards writing music for other people in their healing
- 9:20journey, whatever that may be, because as as human beings, we tend to gravitate towards
- 9:27music.
- 9:27Even if we're not musically inclined, we're not, you know, singers or musicians or or
- 9:32whatever it may be, producers.
- 9:36People just like to listen to music if we're heartbroken.
- 9:40Like, we put on a record that's you know, so we can cry our eyes out and you know what I mean?
- 9:45Or if we're in a good, oh, I love this song.
- 9:47It's a, you know, summer song, whatever it may be.
- 9:50And so I wanted to write music for the people.
- 9:56Having my career inspire my children is just a blessing and a and a extra little bonus on the
- 10:05side.
- 10:06You know?
- 10:06All my girls sing, so it's it's it's definitely heartwarming.
- 10:12Yeah.
- 10:12It just runs in the family.
- 10:13And when you grow up around singers, I know that it's very easy to just fall in line.
- 10:18Right?
- 10:18Yep.
- 10:18But for you, Aurelia, is this something that you're really passionate about pursuing and
- 10:24seeing your mom doing this and being here this weekend in the recording studio?
- 10:28Mhmm.
- 10:29Does it inspire you, or is it a little bit daunting to say, I don't know if I can fill
- 10:33these shoes.
- 10:34Right?
- 10:35A little bit of both.
- 10:36Yeah.
- 10:37Yeah.
- 10:37More inspiring if anything, though.
- 10:39I've always been inspired.
- 10:41Yeah.
- 10:41I've actually tried to discourage her.
- 10:45Well, how could you not?
- 10:46We know how much work it is.
- 10:47Yeah.
- 10:47Right?
- 10:47And we know
- 10:48how tell her.
- 10:49I don't want you to have to go through what I do.
- 10:50Well, we know how discouraging it can be when you feel like no one's listening and you're not
- 10:54getting that connection with people and you're you know, as someone who's been doing this for
- 10:57a quarter of a century now, I know all those lows.
- 11:00And it's probably what makes me a very good host for this show talking independent
- 11:03musicians because I know the struggle.
- 11:06Right?
- 11:06And I haven't really got to celebrate any of the highs of this.
- 11:09I I've had a few recent wins lately and things like that, but those are all coming after
- 11:15twenty years of of doing this.
- 11:17You know?
- 11:17So I understand the struggles that it takes.
- 11:19And being a father myself to, you know, kids, I have a teenager now as well, and and seeing him
- 11:26and knowing what he wants to do and pursue any dreams that he wants.
- 11:28Right?
- 11:28I'm never going to push something onto my kids and to make them follow in the family
- 11:32footsteps.
- 11:33Sure.
- 11:34God help them if they ever do.
- 11:36You know?
- 11:36Right.
- 11:36It's it's just an incredible amount of work, and and I see it every day from artists like a
- 11:41Tyler Herwig, you know, chasing them around yesterday throughout Nashville while he's
- 11:46shooting content.
- 11:46Yeah.
- 11:47And I watched him perform the same hook from his songs 400 times Sure.
- 11:52And going, I don't have that.
- 11:54Yeah.
- 11:54Right?
- 11:54Like, I I buddy, God bless you because I don't have that.
- 11:58And that really, you know and and it's not necessarily discouraging to me and even to say
- 12:03that.
- 12:03It's just like, yeah.
- 12:04I'm I have my thing now, and I'm glad that I found this, and I'm so happy to have had
- 12:08podcasting and and this platform now to share with people because it's I can't imagine doing
- 12:15what it takes to make it in the music business now.
- 12:17It's a ton of work because you have to be a creator and you have to be your manager and you
- 12:20have to be your booking agent and all of these things.
- 12:23Oh.
- 12:23And there's more and there's more well, and you've got plenty of hats too, Alyssa.
- 12:27I I saw them in the
- 12:28back seat.
- 12:29That yeah.
- 12:31It's incredibly hard, and it's more I mean, we saw that Josie's had over 86,000 submissions
- 12:37Right.
- 12:37For their award show this year.
- 12:38Yeah.
- 12:39That's insanity.
- 12:40It is crazy.
- 12:41That's, like, two point four, two point five percent of of those submissions only receive a
- 12:49nomination.
- 12:50So
- 12:50And that's something that I pointed out in talking with Tyler and we're rolling around
- 12:54with him was, you know, he was a little disappointed that he didn't win.
- 12:56He had five nominations and, like, come on.
- 12:58We gotta win one of these.
- 12:59Right?
- 12:59Low.
- 12:59You got a nomination.
- 13:00And that's and you got five.
- 13:02You got nominated in five different categories.
- 13:04That's incredible.
- 13:05That's incredible.
- 13:06Yeah.
- 13:07And and you should hang your hat on that because that's such a small percentage of
- 13:11people, but then an even percentage that are winners as well.
- 13:14And there's all of this has value in the world.
- 13:17And I think that's what's so awesome about the Josies and my first time working with Tina
- 13:21Marie and Josie.
- 13:23And a big shout out to them.
- 13:24Thank you ladies for for having us and making this possible because it means something.
- 13:30And it mean in a world where it's so easy to get overlooked by everyone, it's nice to have
- 13:36these things that set you apart.
- 13:37So awesome.
- 13:38Well, before I let you go, go ahead and plug everything.
- 13:40Tell us where we can hear the song and where we can find out more about Alyssa Ruffin.
- 13:44And, really, if you got your social medias and stuff out there working already, you're free to
- 13:48share too.
- 13:49Yep.
- 13:50So you can go to alissaruffin.com.
- 13:53Also, the sacrifice is available on all digital platforms.
- 13:58And my brand new upcoming Christmas single, All Wrapped Up in Christmas, is releasing very soon
- 14:05within the next couple of weeks.
- 14:08And then Aurelia?
- 14:10You can find me through our band page, bullet queen music or music?
- 14:17Aurelia Halo on Instagram.
- 14:20Awesome.
- 14:20Well, ladies, thank you so much for being on the bus with me.
- 14:23And thank you for being part of the scene.
- 14:25Yeah.
- 14:25Absolutely.
- 14:30Cool.
- 14:30Yeah.
- 14:31Kailed it.
