Latest / Wired To Hunt Podcast / Ep. 941: Back 40 - New Farm, No Intel? What to Do Right Now
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: You got a month to add three core, huge things
- 0:03Speaker 1: right there, and then you also have a month to
- 0:06Speaker 1: be like, hey, I'm going to get five really good
- 0:09Speaker 1: setups up.
- 0:10Speaker 2: By the end of season. You know, I may have
- 0:12Speaker 2: a half a dozen or more on that property, but
- 0:14Speaker 2: I'm not coming in and hanging them all at once.
- 0:16Speaker 2: I'm bringing them in. On hunts, I'm hanging them.
- 0:18Speaker 3: Welcome to Back forty.
- 0:19Speaker 4: I'm Jake Hoefer, and this week, if you just got
- 0:22Speaker 4: a new farm, you just got permission, or even if
- 0:25Speaker 4: you've been hunting a farm, the same farm for a year.
- 0:27Speaker 4: After a year, you're going to get a fresh perspective
- 0:30Speaker 4: from eight experts on what they would do right before
- 0:33Speaker 4: the season with limited impact or maybe large impact projects.
- 0:37Speaker 3: Set yourself up for this fall real quick.
- 0:40Speaker 4: The Back forty's brought to you by land dot com,
- 0:43Speaker 4: the leading online real estate marketplace to find your perfect rural, recreational, agricultural,
- 0:49Speaker 4: or hunting properties here.
- 0:51Speaker 3: In the US.
- 0:52Speaker 4: Now, a lot of these things that we're going to
- 0:55Speaker 4: hear from the expert panel maybe things that seem obvious,
- 0:58Speaker 4: But I also think after finishing this episode, getting a
- 1:03Speaker 4: reset on hey, do I have all.
- 1:05Speaker 3: These things that I can do here for this fall?
- 1:08Speaker 3: Have I done it?
- 1:08Speaker 4: Also, if you haven't done the scouting, or maybe there's
- 1:11Speaker 4: a specific terrain feature that seemed to be very important,
- 1:14Speaker 4: or maybe you've been too nervous to go in and
- 1:16Speaker 4: make any impact on your farm because of the season
- 1:18Speaker 4: is getting closer. So you're going to get a lot
- 1:20Speaker 4: of different opinions and observations based off of our expert
- 1:24Speaker 4: panel of guests. And to kick things off, the question
- 1:27Speaker 4: is I just got access to a new farm.
- 1:30Speaker 3: What can I do now? And we're going to start
- 1:31Speaker 3: with Bill Winki.
- 1:39Speaker 4: Okay, I just closed on a new farm, or I
- 1:42Speaker 4: just got a new piece of private It's August twenty fifth,
- 1:46Speaker 4: and a lot of the big fun offseason projects are
- 1:50Speaker 4: off the table. Where do I start right now? It's
- 1:53Speaker 4: August twenty fifth.
- 1:55Speaker 5: Well, there's not much you can do from a improvement
- 2:01Speaker 5: perspective on that property. I would say the most important
- 2:05Speaker 5: thing would be to mow probably a few access trails,
- 2:11Speaker 5: something that you know, just have some way that you
- 2:15Speaker 5: can get around. It's still August, You've got time for
- 2:18Speaker 5: the deer to get used to a little bit of
- 2:19Speaker 5: human activity there. I think the first thing I would
- 2:22Speaker 5: do is just establish maybe a few ways of getting
- 2:27Speaker 5: around in that property, so you're not just busting through
- 2:29Speaker 5: a brush and making you knows, you need to be
- 2:32Speaker 5: able to hunt it. So I think that's probably priority
- 2:35Speaker 5: number one, and then I wouldn't be probably number two.
- 2:40Speaker 5: Then for me, it would just be running the cameras
- 2:42Speaker 5: and finding some shooters, you know, finding out what's there,
- 2:45Speaker 5: you know, getting an inventory, figuring out which parts of
- 2:49Speaker 5: the property or are the peris that you want to
- 2:50Speaker 5: focus on that season. But if you can't hunt it effectively,
- 2:55Speaker 5: like you can't get into it from the different directions,
- 2:59Speaker 5: maybe you know, because of you know, whatever reason, you
- 3:03Speaker 5: need to establish access first, and maybe that means talking
- 3:07Speaker 5: to one of your neighbors and you know, paid him
- 3:09Speaker 5: a little fee or somehow getting permission to come in
- 3:12Speaker 5: from that direction where you know, otherwise you would even
- 3:15Speaker 5: be able to hunt one into your property because you know,
- 3:18Speaker 5: on certain wins, you'd be messing it up if you
- 3:21Speaker 5: came in from the wrong way. So access is probably,
- 3:25Speaker 5: like I said, number.
- 3:26Speaker 4: One, would you go in and tear through the whole
- 3:28Speaker 4: entire farm, let's call it let's stick to the eighty
- 3:29Speaker 4: acre example, and the back part has thirty acres, a
- 3:34Speaker 4: really really good cover where you anticipate there to be
- 3:37Speaker 4: you know, good betting opportunities, good good corridors.
- 3:40Speaker 3: Everything.
- 3:41Speaker 4: Would you go through in lay eyes basically on the
- 3:43Speaker 4: whole entire farm at that time.
- 3:47Speaker 5: No, No, In fact, I used to hunt. Gosh, you'd laugh.
- 3:54Speaker 5: But when I was a kid growing up in the country,
- 3:58Speaker 5: I was related to everybody. I was like fourth generation
- 4:00Speaker 5: on both sides of my family, so I had permission everywhere.
- 4:04Speaker 5: I think I had sixty some different farms. I had
- 4:06Speaker 5: permission hunting a lot of them. I never scouted, you know,
- 4:10Speaker 5: on foot. I would just go in there with the
- 4:12Speaker 5: tree stand on my back. Based on the area. Photos
- 4:16Speaker 5: you can tell you buy a driving paths it or
- 4:18Speaker 5: whatever what the trade is. But the aerial photo kind
- 4:21Speaker 5: of gives you a visual and you can say, okay,
- 4:24Speaker 5: I see a pitch point here, I see you. You
- 4:27Speaker 5: don't need to even scout, you know. Back then, I
- 4:29Speaker 5: wish I would have had truck. It was because gosh,
- 4:31Speaker 5: there's no telling what I could have killed on sixty
- 4:33Speaker 5: some different farms. There had been some big deal there somewhere.
- 4:37Speaker 5: But anyway, I rarely scouted more than you know, five
- 4:43Speaker 5: to ten a year. But I hunted a lot of
- 4:48Speaker 5: different spots, and you don't need to scout pick good
- 4:51Speaker 5: standing locations. You just need to be handy with the map.
- 4:54Speaker 5: And so I'd say no, I wouldn't go in unless
- 4:57Speaker 5: you're going and stand on your back. But you know
- 5:01Speaker 5: the kind of the method that everybody talks about now,
- 5:05Speaker 5: you know the ultra mobile type of money. I was
- 5:09Speaker 5: doing that quite a bit when I was You're just
- 5:12Speaker 5: a young guy because I had access to so much ground. See,
- 5:15Speaker 5: you always keep the the uh element of surprise in
- 5:20Speaker 5: your favor. You always want to be you know, people
- 5:23Speaker 5: know after a few years of doing this is the
- 5:25Speaker 5: first time you hunt a stand is probably gonna be
- 5:27Speaker 5: your best chance because they dear don't have any history
- 5:31Speaker 5: of you being there that they don't have any reason
- 5:33Speaker 5: not to be moving comfortably and naturally. Every time you
- 5:37Speaker 5: hunt it after that, it can potentially get worse. So
- 5:39Speaker 5: I have been a few stands in my whole life
- 5:41Speaker 5: that that didn't happen on. But so going in there
- 5:45Speaker 5: to scout it, I mean, if you're gonna, if you're
- 5:47Speaker 5: gonna scout it, let me give you this one last
- 5:49Speaker 5: piece of advice. If you're going to scout it you
- 5:51Speaker 5: feel like I have to get in there, then I
- 5:54Speaker 5: would make all kinds of noise. I'd be the farmer
- 5:58Speaker 5: checking his fence with a chainsaw on a tractor. Just
- 6:02Speaker 5: be as you know, completely give them so much warning
- 6:07Speaker 5: that they're more curious than anything else. You know, I've
- 6:11Speaker 5: seen that work. But if you try to sneak in,
- 6:14Speaker 5: and usually that doesn't work, you better off you staying
- 6:16Speaker 5: completely out.
- 6:17Speaker 4: Okay, this real quick question. When you mentioned identifying different
- 6:23Speaker 4: pinch points, would you pick a pinch point or inside
- 6:25Speaker 4: corner just off a map? And I know that's so situational,
- 6:29Speaker 4: but you know, people talk about a handful of different
- 6:32Speaker 4: buzzwords of identifying, you know, from the scouting. What is
- 6:36Speaker 4: your favorite feature from an scouting perspective for you know,
- 6:40Speaker 4: something like this scenario.
- 6:42Speaker 5: Well, the best ones are the most obvious ones, and
- 6:45Speaker 5: that's usually the kittie corner or the corner crossing two
- 6:51Speaker 5: large blocks of cover. So let's say you got you know,
- 6:55Speaker 5: a big chunk here and a big chunk there, and
- 6:57Speaker 5: they're connected, you know, through one little narrow whether it's
- 7:01Speaker 5: a creek bottom or you know, the open gate between
- 7:04Speaker 5: two or whatever it might be, those spots are really
- 7:07Speaker 5: hard to beat during the rut because they become super
- 7:10Speaker 5: highways for any bucks that are going from one area
- 7:12Speaker 5: where dotes are probably betted to another area where those
- 7:15Speaker 5: are probably betted. Then you don't need topography. You don't
- 7:20Speaker 5: need to know the topography to see those. The ones
- 7:23Speaker 5: that I like that are topographically focused are the ones
- 7:27Speaker 5: like the funnels at the tops of ditches where the
- 7:32Speaker 5: deer go around the top of the ditch. And that's
- 7:35Speaker 5: a no brainer because they're very apparent when you're studying
- 7:39Speaker 5: the topographic maps, and usually there's there's dope betting areas
- 7:43Speaker 5: on either side of that ditch. It is usually the
- 7:46Speaker 5: way the land lazes. That's why the ditch is there,
- 7:48Speaker 5: because you got a point, and you got a point,
- 7:50Speaker 5: and then the ditches between them, well, the bucks are
- 7:52Speaker 5: going to gain between those, you know, checking through the
- 7:55Speaker 5: different dough betting areas. So the very upper end of
- 7:59Speaker 5: that ditches is almost always, you know, kind of a
- 8:02Speaker 5: no brainer. Then you can get the wind to work
- 8:04Speaker 5: for you and you could use the ditch for access,
- 8:06Speaker 5: you know, for sneaking in and out. I've set up
- 8:09Speaker 5: a ton of those, and you usually you want to
- 8:12Speaker 5: go in there with a chase saw during the offseason
- 8:14Speaker 5: and clear that ditch out. But you can come and go,
- 8:19Speaker 5: you know, very well undetected now if you use that ditch.
- 8:22Speaker 5: So those are really good ones to find too. I
- 8:24Speaker 5: love those. But there's tons of different options out there,
- 8:29Speaker 5: but those are the two most obvious ones there.
- 8:31Speaker 3: You guys have it.
- 8:32Speaker 4: That is Bill's perspective for someone that just got new
- 8:35Speaker 4: access on what you can do most of access trails
- 8:38Speaker 4: if you do go in and scout, make a lot
- 8:40Speaker 4: of noise, and the most obvious spot could easily be
- 8:44Speaker 4: the best spot. So now we're going to get into
- 8:46Speaker 4: skips Lie and what he would do in the next
- 8:48Speaker 4: thirty days to make his farm the best possible and
- 8:53Speaker 4: a short window and the full project detailed list right now.
- 8:57Speaker 4: I just bought a brand new farm, or I just
- 8:59Speaker 4: not on a door. I got a piece of private ground.
- 9:02Speaker 4: It's August twenty seventh, Gune goes off. Time to go,
- 9:06Speaker 4: what do I start?
- 9:08Speaker 1: You can make some exciting things happen. So late August
- 9:15Speaker 1: funding season opens what October one?
- 9:18Speaker 6: Sure?
- 9:18Speaker 1: Okay, so you definitely could still plant things. I would
- 9:24Speaker 1: get out there. I would I would beg borrow and
- 9:27Speaker 1: plead with anybody I knew to borrow a tractor and
- 9:30Speaker 1: a drill, rent one higher, one out, and I would
- 9:33Speaker 1: go plant a combo of like winter I winter piece,
- 9:41Speaker 1: when are we tri to kale, trit to kelly and clovers,
- 9:45Speaker 1: and I would quick get that seated down, like kill it,
- 9:49Speaker 1: set it down immediately, So there's your food for the year.
- 9:52Speaker 1: That it's not it's not ideal in that you know,
- 9:55Speaker 1: you don't have other things now, and that's really the
- 9:58Speaker 1: only thing you can really get going one in most
- 10:00Speaker 1: areas by that point. But it's actually an ideal time
- 10:03Speaker 1: to plant that too. So and I'd add oats in
- 10:05Speaker 1: there too, by the way. So I would immediately do that,
- 10:09Speaker 1: and then I would immediately go in there and just
- 10:12Speaker 1: be like, hey, I'm gonna go in there when I plant,
- 10:14Speaker 1: I do it the same day. And this is just
- 10:15Speaker 1: me being fussy, But the same day I would go
- 10:18Speaker 1: through there and be like, hey, while you're planting this stuff,
- 10:20Speaker 1: because I'm hiring you, or I'm begging you to do it,
- 10:23Speaker 1: or maybe I'm running it, I'd go take a bunch
- 10:25Speaker 1: of chainsaws with me, and I'd go in the timber
- 10:28Speaker 1: and I would find some things that, like, you know,
- 10:31Speaker 1: figure out what your undesirable trees are, your poor quality trees,
- 10:34Speaker 1: and just dump a few here and there to create
- 10:36Speaker 1: some structure. And that structure will last, you know, continually,
- 10:40Speaker 1: it'll definitely impact the whole fall. And by the time
- 10:43Speaker 1: even hunting season comes in a month later, they're going
- 10:46Speaker 1: to start using that as betting and structure and like
- 10:50Speaker 1: you know, even some of the brows that'll come down
- 10:52Speaker 1: and maybe a little bit will start to yeah, probably
- 10:55Speaker 1: not much, but they'll be definitely more betting, and that
- 11:01Speaker 1: dynamic will change by the fall. So that's really simple.
- 11:05Speaker 1: That's just two things. That's just quickly, add some food
- 11:10Speaker 1: if I can chain saw, some cover if I can.
- 11:12Speaker 1: I know that's being very specific, and there's more to
- 11:14Speaker 1: it to that, and this is if somebody can manipulate
- 11:17Speaker 1: the habitat. And then if you could add a watering
- 11:20Speaker 1: hole too, I definitely would do that. And all of
- 11:23Speaker 1: a sudden, you're like, so you got a month to
- 11:25Speaker 1: add three core, huge things right there, and then you
- 11:29Speaker 1: also have a month to be like, hey, I'm going
- 11:32Speaker 1: to get five really good setups up and maybe I
- 11:36Speaker 1: do some mock scrapes, maybe I put a rubbing post in.
- 11:38Speaker 1: Maybe I just have five stands that are in sweet
- 11:42Speaker 1: funnel locations with the dear naturally travel. I mean, going
- 11:46Speaker 1: back to the basics of how I started hunting, high spent.
- 11:50Speaker 1: It's spent decades hunting. I didn't need to do all
- 11:53Speaker 1: this stuff either. I didn't need to put in a
- 11:55Speaker 1: food plot to shoot a big deer.
- 11:57Speaker 6: I didn't.
- 11:57Speaker 1: Most of the year I've still shot to this day.
- 12:01Speaker 1: Probably did not involve a food plot or a watering
- 12:03Speaker 1: hole or rubbles. Do all those things help, of course
- 12:06Speaker 1: they do, But usually it was hey, man, you can
- 12:09Speaker 1: just hunt my ground.
- 12:10Speaker 7: I'm like, thank you.
- 12:11Speaker 1: I got a place to go, and hopefully it wasn't
- 12:13Speaker 1: shared with like fifty thousand other people, and then I
- 12:19Speaker 1: would just go in there and hang. My basic approach
- 12:22Speaker 1: was like, okay, I got forty acres, let's go hang
- 12:24Speaker 1: six killer spots that make great sense and go hunt it.
- 12:28Speaker 7: And I kill bucks just doing that.
- 12:31Speaker 1: So sometimes it's very simple, and hey, I have no money,
- 12:35Speaker 1: but I can go.
- 12:37Speaker 3: You know.
- 12:37Speaker 1: So I can't do plots, I can't do timberwork, I
- 12:40Speaker 1: can't put it in a waterhole. That's fine, pick out
- 12:43Speaker 1: six sweet spots. And go hunt it. Hunt smart and
- 12:48Speaker 1: go find the natural movement of the deer. Use your
- 12:50Speaker 1: woodsmanship skills or learn your woodsmanship skills to set up
- 12:55Speaker 1: sweet six, eight, five, whatever. Just really good spots. Go
- 13:00Speaker 1: hunt them correctly, and you probably will have a chance
- 13:03Speaker 1: at a good deer if there's a good deer in there.
- 13:05Speaker 3: Really simple, some great information here from skipping.
- 13:09Speaker 4: I think those projects he'd listed, whether it's permission farm,
- 13:12Speaker 4: maybe it's a farm you've had for a long time.
- 13:14Speaker 4: If you don't have those items, make a punch list.
- 13:16Speaker 4: Go out there, get it done, hand your cameras, find
- 13:18Speaker 4: the best five spots, get them set up, and patiently
- 13:21Speaker 4: be ready to strike.
- 13:22Speaker 3: When the time is right.
- 13:23Speaker 4: Next up we have Bobby Kendall, and Bobby buys a
- 13:25Speaker 4: lot of farms, and so he is in this position
- 13:28Speaker 4: a lot, and you get to hear what he would do,
- 13:30Speaker 4: basically what it does every year. I just drew a
- 13:33Speaker 4: tag in a random spot. I knocked on a door,
- 13:36Speaker 4: got permission in an area. I have no clue where
- 13:38Speaker 4: to start. I want the powerball, and I spot a farm.
- 13:42Speaker 4: It's August, and where do I start? Feel that a
- 13:45Speaker 4: lot of the spring food plots long gone a lot
- 13:49Speaker 4: of these really big projects that take a while off
- 13:51Speaker 4: the table.
- 13:52Speaker 3: So brown zero, where do I start? Race? Gun goes off?
- 13:56Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 13:56Speaker 8: So I actually am in this situation a lot because
- 13:59Speaker 8: I buy a lot of farms, and a lot of
- 14:01Speaker 8: times I don't I don't control when I buy them,
- 14:02Speaker 8: So a lot of times I'm I'm past the point
- 14:05Speaker 8: of a lot of this stuff.
- 14:07Speaker 7: So a couple of.
- 14:08Speaker 8: Things to come to mind. Like one thing you can
- 14:10Speaker 8: you can, you know, get on the horn with is
- 14:14Speaker 8: if there's a farmer is reaching out to him and
- 14:16Speaker 8: starting to try and figure out if you're gonna be
- 14:18Speaker 8: able to buy back crops because that's huge, especially corn.
- 14:24Speaker 8: And the other thing is you're going to want to
- 14:26Speaker 8: go put cameras out immediately to see what's there. And
- 14:29Speaker 8: so that time of year, if you have beans, it's
- 14:32Speaker 8: a lot easier because you have lots of places to
- 14:35Speaker 8: put I was just on a farm earlier, and I
- 14:37Speaker 8: think we talked about this a little while ago. Beans
- 14:40Speaker 8: last year, eight or ten cameras, corn this year a
- 14:43Speaker 8: couple And so if you have beans or olf outfields
- 14:47Speaker 8: or stuff like that, it's going to make it a
- 14:49Speaker 8: lot easier. Some ponds, natural ponds go and trim down
- 14:52Speaker 8: a nice spot, or back your mower in and make
- 14:54Speaker 8: a spot. They're going to go to that easy spot
- 14:57Speaker 8: of the pond, you know. But otherwise, what I like
- 15:02Speaker 8: to do on a corn here, and what I'll do
- 15:05Speaker 8: on this farm down here, on a corn here, and
- 15:07Speaker 8: I always look forward to this day. I'll get my
- 15:10Speaker 8: backpack and I'll fill it up with sell cams, and
- 15:12Speaker 8: I'll get my hedge clippers, and i'll take some t posts.
- 15:16Speaker 8: Everything's all grown up and nasty, and I'll just go
- 15:19Speaker 8: around the edges of all the corn fields in like
- 15:21Speaker 8: mid September, and I'll i'll just study those licking branches.
- 15:27Speaker 8: You can tell where they're gonna want to scrape concentrations
- 15:29Speaker 8: a scent where a point comes up out of the
- 15:31Speaker 8: woods to a cove or whatever. You'll be able to
- 15:34Speaker 8: see the branches that have been hit years and years.
- 15:37Speaker 8: You can generally tell what licking branches look like. So
- 15:41Speaker 8: I'll and they're already starting to put their face in
- 15:44Speaker 8: them by mid September, so I'll just wait a little longer.
- 15:47Speaker 7: Kind of Okay, let's just wait a little longer. We're
- 15:49Speaker 7: already this far.
- 15:50Speaker 8: And I'll go in there and I'll hedge clip everything
- 15:52Speaker 8: down so it's nice and low, and I'll put a
- 15:54Speaker 8: camera up and I'll just load the farm up on
- 15:57Speaker 8: those licking branches.
- 16:00Speaker 7: Also, if I'm.
- 16:01Speaker 8: Studying a TAPO or whatever and i'm the obvious rough
- 16:06Speaker 8: funnels inside corners, obvious spots are gonna be good in
- 16:10Speaker 8: the rut, I'll it's like I'll dive down in. I'll
- 16:13Speaker 8: walk every inch I want to. I want to just
- 16:16Speaker 8: do it once and be over with it, and I'll
- 16:18Speaker 8: pick my stands. I always I use ONYX and I
- 16:21Speaker 8: always when i'm scouting, whether it's a winter or that
- 16:23Speaker 8: time of year, as I'm picking these trees, I always
- 16:26Speaker 8: put a pin and I take a picture of the tree,
- 16:28Speaker 8: and within the app you can attach it.
- 16:31Speaker 7: Yeah, and I don't have any.
- 16:32Speaker 8: Affiliation with these guys, but that way, I don't know
- 16:36Speaker 8: if you're like me, but like I can't remember what
- 16:38Speaker 8: happened two seconds ago. So that way, like when you
- 16:41Speaker 8: get in the game later, you can just pull up
- 16:43Speaker 8: your phone and be like, oh, yeah, that needs a
- 16:44Speaker 8: lock on, that needs sticks, that needs a lot. You
- 16:47Speaker 8: know that you can tell what that tree needs, and
- 16:50Speaker 8: a lot of times you know if the spot can
- 16:52Speaker 8: have two different wins.
- 16:52Speaker 7: I'll take pictures of both of them.
- 16:54Speaker 8: So I'm like scouting, but I'm also putting those cameras
- 16:56Speaker 8: out along the corn on the licking branches. And then
- 17:02Speaker 8: and it's very important those licking branches. Those that's where
- 17:05Speaker 8: that's where you're gonna probably shoot one in October is
- 17:08Speaker 8: on one of those straits.
- 17:10Speaker 7: And so, okay, scrape spot.
- 17:14Speaker 8: Where can I get with a north to a west
- 17:18Speaker 8: a northwest wind in October because that's going to be
- 17:20Speaker 8: the magic X days.
- 17:22Speaker 7: That's all my design.
- 17:24Speaker 8: Everything I do is based on a northwest wind north
- 17:27Speaker 8: to west because those are the days that the deer
- 17:30Speaker 8: we're after is most likely going to walk in October.
- 17:32Speaker 8: I don't know about you, but I like to shoot
- 17:34Speaker 8: my deer early as possible before he's dead by somebody else.
- 17:38Speaker 8: So I put a lot of eggs in that north
- 17:41Speaker 8: west basket in October. So I'm like, Okay, licking branch,
- 17:45Speaker 8: this spot makes sense, this is where I need to
- 17:48Speaker 8: be for the northwest.
- 17:50Speaker 3: Does it work with.
- 17:51Speaker 8: The thermals, because the thermals will screw you worse than
- 17:53Speaker 8: the wind in October. You want a big ditch, so
- 17:56Speaker 8: if you if you can find those spots that sets
- 17:58Speaker 8: up for northwest with a big ditch.
- 18:01Speaker 7: For your thermost a pull.
- 18:04Speaker 8: Then you can be like, okay, well, if this farmer
- 18:06Speaker 8: is gonna let me buy that crop, this is where
- 18:07Speaker 8: I want to do it based off of access, but
- 18:11Speaker 8: also northwest. And because again maybe the access isthing good,
- 18:15Speaker 8: but the northwest setup and the thermal set up because
- 18:18Speaker 8: I can't bring a box line here is really good
- 18:20Speaker 8: for this spot, but the access isn't great. Well, I'm
- 18:22Speaker 8: gonna pick and choose my days in October, like we
- 18:24Speaker 8: talked about earlier, I'm gonna buy this little piece of
- 18:26Speaker 8: corn back and I'm gonna hunt right there. So you're
- 18:29Speaker 8: already visualize, you're thinking like a ear you're visualizing it.
- 18:33Speaker 8: And then like maybe there's some more scrape branches down
- 18:35Speaker 8: through here, and you're like, well, this one's gonna be
- 18:37Speaker 8: so powerful because this is where the point comes out
- 18:40Speaker 8: of the woods and there's a concentration is sent here.
- 18:42Speaker 8: You can see the corn damage, you can see it.
- 18:44Speaker 8: This is where they want to scrape because there's a
- 18:46Speaker 8: concentration of set So I'm just gonna eliminate these other
- 18:48Speaker 8: scrape branches around here anyway. And then they have to
- 18:50Speaker 8: come here to my camera, and they have to come
- 18:52Speaker 8: here when I shoot them in October. So yeah, I
- 18:54Speaker 8: just go around and I load the load those liking
- 18:56Speaker 8: branches up. I pop into the obvious rough donald stands
- 19:01Speaker 8: because in October I'm not diving into those spots anyway. Yeah,
- 19:05Speaker 8: unless there's really good access. We passed the.
- 19:07Speaker 7: Full moon in the end of the month.
- 19:09Speaker 8: I'm running out of my window because the mornings can
- 19:12Speaker 8: be really good in October.
- 19:13Speaker 7: But you just have to weigh is it worth it yet?
- 19:16Speaker 8: And sometimes it becomes yes because of the spot, and
- 19:19Speaker 8: yes because it's far into October, and yes because I
- 19:21Speaker 8: have this deer peg. You know, I shot a big
- 19:24Speaker 8: one two years ago October fourth, in the morning because
- 19:26Speaker 8: I had him pegged, had perfect access. I knew what
- 19:29Speaker 8: he's gonna do because of the front, Like he's gonna
- 19:32Speaker 8: be checking marking territory in the front because or marking
- 19:35Speaker 8: territory in daylight morning in the evening, because this pressure
- 19:38Speaker 8: front just came in and wound him up, you know,
- 19:41Speaker 8: so thinking like a deer.
- 19:48Speaker 4: No, obviously, Bobby hunts in the Midwest a lot and
- 19:50Speaker 4: buying back the crops. It's gonna cost some money, but
- 19:52Speaker 4: can greatly extend your season for a late season opportunity.
- 19:56Speaker 4: It could be an anchor for the farm throughout the
- 19:58Speaker 4: majority of the year, depending if it isn't corner or
- 20:00Speaker 4: if it's in beans, and so some really good pieces
- 20:02Speaker 4: of information for anyone to go out and make their
- 20:05Speaker 4: season as best as possible with with it just right
- 20:08Speaker 4: around the corner, because we're running out of time for
- 20:10Speaker 4: some of these big exciting projects. But with that punchless,
- 20:13Speaker 4: you're gonna be a little bit closer. Next up we
- 20:14Speaker 4: have Don Higgins on what he would do on a
- 20:16Speaker 4: brand new piece that he just got at the end August.
- 20:19Speaker 4: I just got access to a new farm. Where do
- 20:21Speaker 4: I start?
- 20:23Speaker 9: Now?
- 20:23Speaker 7: What?
- 20:24Speaker 2: Well, at this point of the season, you know it's
- 20:27Speaker 2: late August, I'd be I'd be walking the farm just
- 20:34Speaker 2: to learn the terrain as much as anything. I'm not
- 20:37Speaker 2: looking for, although yeah, I'm looking for deer signed to
- 20:39Speaker 2: some degree, I'm looking for old sign you know, old
- 20:42Speaker 2: rubs on big trees and things like that. Trying to
- 20:45Speaker 2: figure out potential stand locations, access points, How am I
- 20:51Speaker 2: going to access that property? What wind directions am I
- 20:53Speaker 2: going to be able to hunt this property?
- 20:54Speaker 4: With?
- 20:56Speaker 2: If the situation allows, you know, can I get a
- 21:00Speaker 2: fall food pot in? I'm taking When I'm doing that
- 21:03Speaker 2: initial scouting foray through the property, I'm going to have
- 21:07Speaker 2: a bundle of trail cameras with me. I'm going to
- 21:11Speaker 2: be hanging those to get an inventory of the bucks
- 21:14Speaker 2: that are on the property, doing everything I can to
- 21:17Speaker 2: make up for lost time, and doing it as quickly
- 21:21Speaker 2: as possible. I'm not going to be going and scouting
- 21:23Speaker 2: multiple times. That one trip through is going to be
- 21:27Speaker 2: to learn the terrain, to get those cameras out to
- 21:31Speaker 2: find potential stand sites. Then I'm going to be waiting
- 21:33Speaker 2: to see what my cameras tell me as to how
- 21:35Speaker 2: I proceed. If I can put a food pot in,
- 21:38Speaker 2: I'm gonna be wanting to do that immediately. You know,
- 21:40Speaker 2: September first is the magical date for fall plots across
- 21:44Speaker 2: much of the Midwest. I know, the guys up north,
- 21:46Speaker 2: I want to get them in sooner than that. The
- 21:48Speaker 2: guys to the south may still have some time, but
- 21:51Speaker 2: that's kind of the sweet spot for much of us,
- 21:54Speaker 2: or much of the Midwest for most of us.
- 21:57Speaker 7: So that's how I would approach property.
- 22:00Speaker 4: When you walk that farm for the first time. Maybe
- 22:03Speaker 4: you saw them on a gas station and you've been
- 22:05Speaker 4: hoping to run into them, and hey, can I you
- 22:06Speaker 4: might mind if I hunt that farm you never walked before.
- 22:09Speaker 4: That first time you go in there, you mentioned looking
- 22:11Speaker 4: for train, uh that may move to your old sign.
- 22:16Speaker 4: How fast are you actually going through that farm? Because
- 22:19Speaker 4: you and I imagining you probably take your time because
- 22:22Speaker 4: that's your one time. So I just want to make
- 22:23Speaker 4: that really clear where they hear fast urgency. Okay, now
- 22:26Speaker 4: I have to burn through this farm and I don't know.
- 22:28Speaker 4: You know, they don't make notes, they don't do what
- 22:30Speaker 4: are some things that you do?
- 22:31Speaker 2: Well, I'm taking my my phone on my on X app.
- 22:35Speaker 2: I'm gonna mark potential pre stand locations. I love to
- 22:38Speaker 2: drop pins, and every time I drop a pin, I'm
- 22:41Speaker 2: gonna be making notes. You know, this would be good
- 22:45Speaker 2: during the rut. I'm gonna need a northwest wind. I'm
- 22:49Speaker 2: going to access you know, across an open cornfield. Gonna
- 22:55Speaker 2: be a better morning spot than the evening spot. So
- 22:57Speaker 2: every and when I put a camera up, you know,
- 22:59Speaker 2: I'm gonna mark mark that location. I'm just gonna use
- 23:02Speaker 2: that app to mark everything that I can as I
- 23:05Speaker 2: make my way across that property.
- 23:07Speaker 7: That way, I don't forget anything.
- 23:09Speaker 2: And then if a true target buck does show up,
- 23:12Speaker 2: a buck I want to kill shows up on camera, boom.
- 23:15Speaker 2: I've got all this intel right there on my phone
- 23:19Speaker 2: where I can take advantage of it and not have
- 23:21Speaker 2: to go back and refresh my memory. Oh yeah, I remember,
- 23:25Speaker 2: now I did see that tree. I mean, I'm going
- 23:27Speaker 2: to be taking spot.
- 23:29Speaker 3: I'm gonna have I stand face this direction exactly everything.
- 23:32Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm gonna be saying, you know, there's a pin
- 23:35Speaker 2: oak tree halfway up the ridge where the deer are
- 23:39Speaker 2: coming off of the ridge. That's the tree I want
- 23:42Speaker 2: my standing. I might even take flagging tape as well
- 23:45Speaker 2: to mark the tree, but typically my notes are going
- 23:48Speaker 2: to be detailed enoughing well, once I get to that
- 23:50Speaker 2: spot with a stand on my back, I'm gonna remember.
- 23:54Speaker 3: You know.
- 23:55Speaker 2: The other thing is I'm going to be detailing things like, uh,
- 24:00Speaker 2: what I need to bring in so when I come
- 24:02Speaker 2: to hang this stand. You know a lot of times
- 24:05Speaker 2: I'm going to do a hang and hunt. I'm going
- 24:07Speaker 2: to come in with end season with my bow in hand,
- 24:10Speaker 2: Novic's tree, stand on my back with climbing sticks and
- 24:14Speaker 2: I'm going to note that need to clear a shooting
- 24:17Speaker 2: lane to the south, so you know, I may trim
- 24:21Speaker 2: a few branches, put my stand up, see if I
- 24:23Speaker 2: need to trim more. Hopefully I don't, and start hunting
- 24:27Speaker 2: right away. Typically i'll do this midday and I will
- 24:30Speaker 2: put the stand up and I will sit the dark.
- 24:34Speaker 2: That's kind of yeah. I don't come in and I
- 24:36Speaker 2: see my target buck on camera. I don't come in
- 24:39Speaker 2: with six trees stands and you know, burger up the
- 24:44Speaker 2: whole property again. Getting all these stands in place, I
- 24:46Speaker 2: will carry them in on my back today. I'm going
- 24:48Speaker 2: to hunt each one. And you know, I may hunt
- 24:50Speaker 2: that stand two or three times before the wind switches
- 24:54Speaker 2: to where I can hunt another location on the farm.
- 24:57Speaker 2: And when that switch happens, I'll come in midday with
- 24:59Speaker 2: a another stand on my back and I'll leave the
- 25:02Speaker 2: original stand come in with another stand on my back.
- 25:05Speaker 2: And I think that's why it can be critical in
- 25:08Speaker 2: situations like that, the stands that you're going to have,
- 25:11Speaker 2: you don't want to be or I don't want to
- 25:13Speaker 2: be coming in with a stand that's noisy exactly with
- 25:18Speaker 2: a chain or you know, buckles rattling, banging on the
- 25:23Speaker 2: metal and everything. That's where I think the Noviac stand
- 25:27Speaker 2: really shines. You can come in and get that up
- 25:30Speaker 2: real quiet, real easy, and if you feel you're confident
- 25:35Speaker 2: nobody's going to steal it, leave it in place. This
- 25:37Speaker 2: is what I do. And by the end of season,
- 25:40Speaker 2: you know, I may have a half a dozen or
- 25:42Speaker 2: more on that property, but I'm not coming in and
- 25:44Speaker 2: hanging them all at once. I'm bringing them in on
- 25:47Speaker 2: hunts and hanging them there.
- 25:48Speaker 3: You have it.
- 25:49Speaker 4: Next up we have Thomas Milsner, and Thomas works a
- 25:53Speaker 4: lot on a permission farm, but works with a lot
- 25:55Speaker 4: of different folks and he's putting together detailed plans short term,
- 25:58Speaker 4: long term, and you're going to hear some of those
- 26:00Speaker 4: things are right now.
- 26:02Speaker 3: I just got a new piece of private ground.
- 26:05Speaker 4: I bought it, I got a lease, knocked on a door,
- 26:09Speaker 4: and got permission on a piece of private ground. It's
- 26:11Speaker 4: August twenty fifth, too late to do a lot of
- 26:15Speaker 4: the exciting off season projects, the off season scouting. So
- 26:18Speaker 4: where do I start to get a leg up for
- 26:22Speaker 4: you know what's coming two months from now.
- 26:25Speaker 10: There's two perspectives here. One is going to be the
- 26:27Speaker 10: long term. One's going to be the short term. And
- 26:31Speaker 10: if your property situation itself is long term, you bought
- 26:37Speaker 10: it long term lease with some flexibility on what you
- 26:41Speaker 10: can actually do, and then I'm going to look at
- 26:43Speaker 10: it completely differently from a property that I have permission
- 26:46Speaker 10: to hunt this fall, right or you know, hidden piece
- 26:50Speaker 10: of public ground or something like that. Right, So there's
- 26:52Speaker 10: two completely different perspectives.
- 26:54Speaker 6: If I'm focused.
- 26:55Speaker 10: On the long term, in my long term goals, then
- 26:59Speaker 10: I'm going to play it a little bit safer. I
- 27:01Speaker 10: really just kind of want to sit back and see
- 27:03Speaker 10: what is this property producing, and how are the deer
- 27:07Speaker 10: operating on this property without the influence of human pressure.
- 27:12Speaker 10: That's the biggest thing, because if you're completely new to
- 27:14Speaker 10: a property and you go in there and you just
- 27:16Speaker 10: start hunting how you hunted the last property or you know,
- 27:20Speaker 10: or you're just diving into try and figure things out,
- 27:23Speaker 10: even in August, especially in August, then you're just going
- 27:27Speaker 10: to stir up the pot, you know. So the way
- 27:30Speaker 10: I kind of describe it sometimes is you have all
- 27:33Speaker 10: these different just visualize a bunch of different colors in
- 27:35Speaker 10: a pot, right, and they all kind of like settle
- 27:38Speaker 10: in it on spots. But if you stir it up,
- 27:39Speaker 10: now it's just all brown. You can't really decipher what
- 27:41Speaker 10: all these things are. You let it settle in. Okay,
- 27:44Speaker 10: there's you know, the does are betting over here, bucks
- 27:47Speaker 10: are coming from over here, you know, whatever it might be,
- 27:50Speaker 10: and you'll figure that out because all those things change
- 27:52Speaker 10: throughout the season. So you really got to approach it
- 27:54Speaker 10: from that long term mindset, starting in the summer, moving
- 27:57Speaker 10: to the end. And a lot of times I'll actually
- 27:59Speaker 10: say just to clients, so they don't do any habitat
- 28:02Speaker 10: projects the first year, even if it's July. You know,
- 28:04Speaker 10: maybe there's some easy access spots we can throw in
- 28:06Speaker 10: a food plot, or more often than not these days,
- 28:09Speaker 10: there was an existing food plot out of property. So yeah,
- 28:11Speaker 10: let's go in there, let's pull our soil samples quick,
- 28:14Speaker 10: throw down a good fall blend, and then we'll regroup
- 28:18Speaker 10: and figure out how to make things.
- 28:19Speaker 9: Better and build the gar in year out.
- 28:22Speaker 10: But for right now, as far as deer movement, we're
- 28:24Speaker 10: not going to go and make major changes. We don't
- 28:26Speaker 10: need to go and hang a ton of stands. Obviously,
- 28:28Speaker 10: we can go scout some pinch points, throw some cameras up,
- 28:30Speaker 10: throw a stand up, pretty simple, right, but always always,
- 28:34Speaker 10: always scout from the outside in and hunt from the
- 28:36Speaker 10: outside in, and it just works out that way really well. Anyways,
- 28:40Speaker 10: if you're hunting the whole season and not just waiting
- 28:43Speaker 10: until the rut right in the early season, you're those
- 28:46Speaker 10: deer are more app to come to those bigger food sources, right,
- 28:49Speaker 10: So why pressure and why put pressure on their betting
- 28:51Speaker 10: areas if they can come to you right and scout
- 28:55Speaker 10: from the outside end, hunt from the outside end. So
- 28:57Speaker 10: you're on the outskirts hunting these bigger food sources. Maybe
- 28:59Speaker 10: a transition plot leading to those food sources where you're
- 29:02Speaker 10: keeping all that pressure off, and then as the season progresses,
- 29:05Speaker 10: maybe you inch in little by little. But what I
- 29:08Speaker 10: always tell everyone is don't be afraid to get aggressive,
- 29:13Speaker 10: but understand the risk versus reward of those situations. So
- 29:17Speaker 10: with that mindset, if you're a short term guy, if
- 29:20Speaker 10: you just got permission to this piece and it's only
- 29:22Speaker 10: for this year, and you don't know is there you
- 29:25Speaker 10: know some neighbor's grandson that still has access to hunt
- 29:29Speaker 10: this property in November when you've been keeping the pressure off,
- 29:33Speaker 10: this guy is going to show up and hunt one
- 29:34Speaker 10: day without telling anyone, because the person that gave you
- 29:37Speaker 10: permission doesn't even own the land. To just connect, you know,
- 29:39Speaker 10: there's all sorts of weird things that happen. Then I'm
- 29:42Speaker 10: going to get a lot more aggressive. I'm going to
- 29:44Speaker 10: go in you know, I'm still going to start with
- 29:46Speaker 10: food sources, especially given the time of the year. Starting
- 29:48Speaker 10: with food sources, finding you know, potentially a community scrape
- 29:51Speaker 10: around the edge of a big food source. Don't expect
- 29:54Speaker 10: to see deer there during daylight very often, but it's
- 29:57Speaker 10: more of an inventory thing. What's in the area, Where
- 30:00Speaker 10: where are they coming from. I'm starting to put together
- 30:01Speaker 10: these theories. You know, where are they betting, where are
- 30:04Speaker 10: they feeding? I know they're feeding here at nine o'clock
- 30:06Speaker 10: at night, but where they start? And you know, where
- 30:09Speaker 10: can I intersect them? And then I'm going a little
- 30:11Speaker 10: bit deeper scouting, you know, trying to pick a rainy
- 30:14Speaker 10: day or windy day. Got a camera in my backpack,
- 30:16Speaker 10: throwing some cameras up. I'm getting more aggressive, but I'm
- 30:19Speaker 10: still mindful of my pressure. Right So I'm going to
- 30:21Speaker 10: take a I'm gonna take a shot early in the
- 30:23Speaker 10: season I'm going to get in there, I'm going to scout,
- 30:25Speaker 10: and then I'm going to back off. But while I'm
- 30:27Speaker 10: in their early season trying to find an early season
- 30:30Speaker 10: buck and make an aggressive move on him, I'm anticipating
- 30:33Speaker 10: what things are going to look like come October November
- 30:36Speaker 10: time for him for the rut, and maybe I'm hanging
- 30:37Speaker 10: on a couple cameras then if I'm you know, in
- 30:40Speaker 10: the depths of the property. But more often than not,
- 30:42Speaker 10: I'm not going deep into a property if I don't
- 30:44Speaker 10: have an intimate relationship with a topography and the habitat,
- 30:47Speaker 10: because I know that I'm going to lose that game
- 30:51Speaker 10: nine times out of ten when that buck knows that
- 30:54Speaker 10: property so well it hasn't been pressured and then I
- 30:56Speaker 10: go in there all willy nilly. So the biggest thing
- 30:59Speaker 10: is short term, long term mindset. But long term, I'm
- 31:03Speaker 10: really trying to learn that property without me stirring that
- 31:07Speaker 10: pot so that I can come back after the season
- 31:11Speaker 10: and put together a really good plan and start breaking
- 31:14Speaker 10: that plan down into a timeline of you know, priority
- 31:17Speaker 10: projects for that for improvement of that property. And maybe
- 31:20Speaker 10: you don't need to do a whole lot. Maybe it's
- 31:22Speaker 10: just improve a couple betting areas, get your stands out,
- 31:24Speaker 10: improve a couple of pinch points, and improve that access.
- 31:27Speaker 10: You know, maybe there's a lot of work that needs
- 31:29Speaker 10: to be done, but I almost want to kind of
- 31:31Speaker 10: get a feel for what's going on in that property.
- 31:33Speaker 4: Something that's stuck with me with this segment with Thomas,
- 31:36Speaker 4: to start from the outside and scout in and be
- 31:40Speaker 4: very mindful that if you did, if you were lucky
- 31:42Speaker 4: enough to buy your first farm or a farm, or
- 31:44Speaker 4: a new farm, or a long term lease or a
- 31:47Speaker 4: long term permission farm, having a long term perspective is
- 31:50Speaker 4: obviously paramount for a long term success. And I think
- 31:53Speaker 4: Thomas nailed it here on the head regarding that. Next up,
- 31:55Speaker 4: we have Jeff Sturgis, So let's get right into it. Okay,
- 31:59Speaker 4: I just got a new piece of private ground. I
- 32:02Speaker 4: might have knocked on a door. I might have bought
- 32:03Speaker 4: it and just closed on it. It's August twenty fifth,
- 32:08Speaker 4: you know, the gun, the gun is getting really close
- 32:10Speaker 4: for opening day. What can I do now? It's brand
- 32:13Speaker 4: new and I don't have any stands, I don't have
- 32:15Speaker 4: any cameras out.
- 32:17Speaker 3: What do I do? Where do I start?
- 32:19Speaker 11: You know, the first thing we did and we bought
- 32:21Speaker 11: our property in June, we could start doing things. But
- 32:24Speaker 11: you know, like I said, I wasn't even I wasn't
- 32:26Speaker 11: even the core area of our property until after the
- 32:28Speaker 11: hunting season. The majority of it, about seventy percent of
- 32:31Speaker 11: the land I never even looked at because we couldn't
- 32:33Speaker 11: go in it and spoke to here. So I'm looking
- 32:35Speaker 11: at specific locations that I can hunt. I know that
- 32:37Speaker 11: I can get in and out of this funnel. It's
- 32:39Speaker 11: not just this is a good spot, it's is this
- 32:42Speaker 11: a good spot and I can get it and out?
- 32:43Speaker 6: Is a huntable?
- 32:45Speaker 9: And what is that game plan going to be?
- 32:46Speaker 11: Is it going to be a morning stand because it's
- 32:48Speaker 11: more closely related to betting, or is this an afternoon
- 32:51Speaker 11: stand it's more closely related to food source. Then I
- 32:54Speaker 11: can start to identify a plan of this is how
- 32:57Speaker 11: access that morning stand away from the food. This is
- 32:59Speaker 11: how I can hunt near food in the afternoon. This
- 33:01Speaker 11: is a morning stand, this is an afternoon stand. If
- 33:03Speaker 11: it's a morning stand and likely not hunt that towards
- 33:06Speaker 11: until towards the rut, then what I'm looking at is
- 33:09Speaker 11: then I'm going in and identifying individual trees that I
- 33:12Speaker 11: can hunt, and I'm going to place those cameras at
- 33:14Speaker 11: those stand locations exactly where I expect to shoot them
- 33:17Speaker 11: on the trail, I expect to shoot them in the location.
- 33:19Speaker 9: I expect to shoot them.
- 33:20Speaker 11: And I'm going to add mox scrapes to all those
- 33:22Speaker 11: stand locations, something free and simple and make vertical will
- 33:28Speaker 11: I looked this morning for some reason, but it was
- 33:29Speaker 11: sixty two mox scrape videos that I have on my
- 33:32Speaker 11: YouTube channel, and so it's in a playlist. Sixty two
- 33:35Speaker 11: mox scrape videos. Feel free to enjoy but at nauseum.
- 33:39Speaker 11: But they I've been doing it for a long time
- 33:44Speaker 11: and it's free use no sense. But I'm going to
- 33:46Speaker 11: put those at the stand location. I expect that buck
- 33:48Speaker 11: to be shot in and around that mock scrape location
- 33:51Speaker 11: somewhere on that trail, and then that's a great spot
- 33:54Speaker 11: to haking a camera at the same time too. Now,
- 33:57Speaker 11: if I want to enhance it, we've installed a lot
- 33:59Speaker 11: of holes as late as early October. It's for a
- 34:02Speaker 11: rut on end of October November. If you're in a
- 34:05Speaker 11: dry area, people always say, well, I have a creek,
- 34:08Speaker 11: we have running water, and springs down in the valleys
- 34:10Speaker 11: and most of our location and a our entire property
- 34:13Speaker 11: in Minnesota, and same with the Wisconsin reached on.
- 34:16Speaker 9: It's where the deer are traveling.
- 34:18Speaker 11: So if deer are bedded in dry areas and they're
- 34:21Speaker 11: on the way to a food source and is dry
- 34:22Speaker 11: in between, great spot for waterhole. If there's dry bedding
- 34:26Speaker 11: areas and you put a water hole in between for
- 34:28Speaker 11: morning rut stands, awesome spot. Funnel cruising stands as well.
- 34:32Speaker 11: As you can picture a block moving from point A
- 34:35Speaker 11: to point B and he can't get water in between them,
- 34:37Speaker 11: it's a perfect spot for a waterhole, even if he
- 34:39Speaker 11: has water one hundred yards opposite direction, because then you
- 34:43Speaker 11: can keep them within the same movement. He has water there,
- 34:46Speaker 11: why is he going to go one hundred yards out
- 34:47Speaker 11: of his way.
- 34:48Speaker 6: And come back.
- 34:49Speaker 11: Typically, if he gets out of his bedding area at
- 34:50Speaker 11: four in the afternoon's getting dark at five, and he
- 34:53Speaker 11: goes one hundred yards off your property to go get water,
- 34:56Speaker 11: he's not coming back. They're efficient creatures, they're not wasting
- 35:00Speaker 11: two hundred yards of travel. So give them that water hole.
- 35:03Speaker 11: And that's one of the things a quick install we
- 35:05Speaker 11: use three hundred galon rubber maids one hundred and fifty
- 35:07Speaker 11: gallon does and it's a lot easier to shovel one
- 35:11Speaker 11: hundred and ten gallon cheap one from TSSE you use
- 35:14Speaker 11: to get those for under one hundred dollars. It's one
- 35:16Speaker 11: hundred and ten gallons that ends up about twenty four
- 35:19Speaker 11: inches deep. I like that depth to size ratio because
- 35:24Speaker 11: it holds water longer, it doesn't evaporate. You don't want
- 35:27Speaker 11: one of the big shallow ponds you like a kiddie
- 35:29Speaker 11: pool or something like that. So that's another quick enhancement
- 35:33Speaker 11: to your hunt that once you have those stand locations
- 35:37Speaker 11: narrowed down, you've narrowed down where a morning stand is afternoon,
- 35:42Speaker 11: you've narrowed down your access. Added some mox scrapes your
- 35:45Speaker 11: stand locations are in that water hole can be the
- 35:48Speaker 11: perfect sweetener. And when we're putting, people say, well, do
- 35:53Speaker 11: I use a waterhole or a mox grape? Always using
- 35:57Speaker 11: mox scrape every stand location, no more, no less. But
- 36:00Speaker 11: then a waterhole would be in addition to that off
- 36:02Speaker 11: the side to the point when we have camera on
- 36:06Speaker 11: that then the smack scrape is either in the background
- 36:10Speaker 11: or the foreground, water hole vice versa. And get this,
- 36:13Speaker 11: I get both of them in one picture, so I
- 36:15Speaker 11: can monitor both of them for the entire year.
- 36:18Speaker 4: I found Jeff's perspective on this to be really interesting
- 36:21Speaker 4: on how careful he has been in the past when
- 36:24Speaker 4: he has fallen into this category. And what's great about
- 36:27Speaker 4: this is so many different perspectives from so many interesting
- 36:30Speaker 4: hunters that have a lot of the same things that overlap,
- 36:33Speaker 4: but little nuances, and so hopefully you're picking up these
- 36:36Speaker 4: small little things and you're figuring out what will apply
- 36:38Speaker 4: directly to you so you can make the next thirty
- 36:41Speaker 4: days as best as possible. Next step we have Steve
- 36:43Speaker 4: Hanson on what he would do and if he would
- 36:46Speaker 4: take on a large project this late end of the summer.
- 36:49Speaker 3: It's late August. You just got access to a new
- 36:52Speaker 3: piece of ground. What do you do and where do
- 36:54Speaker 3: you start?
- 36:56Speaker 12: Well, the first thing I try to figure out is
- 36:58Speaker 12: work on the access. You know, if if there's anything
- 37:01Speaker 12: you can do, whether that be mowing trails, you know,
- 37:05Speaker 12: just anything like that, even if it has to be
- 37:07Speaker 12: with a you know, a weed whip to go along
- 37:09Speaker 12: the edge of some crops. Just try to figure out
- 37:11Speaker 12: a way that you're going to be able to hunt
- 37:13Speaker 12: this or be able to access this to hunt. And
- 37:16Speaker 12: then assuming it's too late to do any food plots
- 37:18Speaker 12: where this farm's located, my next thing would be I'd
- 37:21Speaker 12: be trying to reach out to whoever that tenant is
- 37:24Speaker 12: on the farm, if there's crops on it, on the
- 37:27Speaker 12: odd chance that he would work with you and you
- 37:29Speaker 12: could buy a little bit of standing crop and give
- 37:31Speaker 12: yourself a permanent food source. You know, those would be
- 37:34Speaker 12: the first two things that I would be trying right away.
- 37:37Speaker 12: So then you know, then after that it would be
- 37:42Speaker 12: just you know, as many trail cameras as I can
- 37:44Speaker 12: set up and use any other way of scouting as possible,
- 37:48Speaker 12: like here in Iowa outside the season, we're able to
- 37:50Speaker 12: put some corn out near the cameras. I would be
- 37:52Speaker 12: pulling out all the stops trying to learn what deer
- 37:55Speaker 12: are there and kind of you know, fast track it
- 37:58Speaker 12: to that. That would be the first couple steps that
- 38:01Speaker 12: I would would take without a doubt.
- 38:03Speaker 4: Would you if you had the ability and idea to
- 38:07Speaker 4: you know, with a being brand new and let's say
- 38:09Speaker 4: you did buy it, would you go in and try
- 38:11Speaker 4: to do any over major over overhauls like a new
- 38:16Speaker 4: pretty hefty trail system, or man, it's late August. I know,
- 38:19Speaker 4: the guy with the dozer can get in there this
- 38:21Speaker 4: week and we can get the food plot in the
- 38:23Speaker 4: first week of September. Would you do anything like that
- 38:25Speaker 4: this first go around?
- 38:27Speaker 9: Yeah, you know, if it was.
- 38:28Speaker 12: An owned property, I absolutely would if you had the
- 38:31Speaker 12: ability to work that quickly, and that would be the
- 38:34Speaker 12: big question. If it was an owned piece where you
- 38:36Speaker 12: had the control of the property, I think you still
- 38:39Speaker 12: have just a little tiny bit of time to do that.
- 38:43Speaker 12: I know the the year that I shot that two fourteen,
- 38:48Speaker 12: we dozed and cleared that food plot Labor Day weekend,
- 38:52Speaker 12: so that, yeah, we had picture.
- 38:54Speaker 9: We got pictures of that buck and then went back.
- 38:56Speaker 12: And altered our stand or our food plot setup up
- 39:00Speaker 12: and that's where inevitably ended up killing them. And that
- 39:03Speaker 12: was a food plot planted like the first week of
- 39:05Speaker 12: September where we did all the dozing and clearing Labor
- 39:08Speaker 12: Day weekend.
- 39:09Speaker 9: So there's definitely still time.
- 39:12Speaker 4: Okay, that's that's good. Now, what if it's a knock
- 39:15Speaker 4: on door permission? Would you go in and what would
- 39:19Speaker 4: be your strategy for potentially identifying stand locations and as
- 39:24Speaker 4: far as identifying what this farm, what time frame in
- 39:28Speaker 4: the year this farm might be good too, I think
- 39:29Speaker 4: is another part. So we're just we're talking about imaginary
- 39:32Speaker 4: piece of ground. So if you know, just for a
- 39:35Speaker 4: guy that just randomly gets a piece you mentioned, you know,
- 39:38Speaker 4: do some quick scouting the weed whacker and clean up
- 39:41Speaker 4: access is a big one. But is there any other
- 39:43Speaker 4: key things that someone should do on their first go
- 39:46Speaker 4: around going into a brand new place?
- 39:49Speaker 5: You know?
- 39:49Speaker 12: The one of the simplest ones is I would get
- 39:51Speaker 12: a copy of a lie to our map. A lie
- 39:54Speaker 12: to our map is is like ground or penetrating where
- 39:58Speaker 12: vegetation penetrate radar. That's going to show every little nook
- 40:02Speaker 12: and cranny of that farm. And I would be using
- 40:05Speaker 12: that to try to identify some rut funnels so that
- 40:07Speaker 12: you don't have to walk the entire place. So I
- 40:10Speaker 12: would do that, and I would probably pick the three
- 40:12Speaker 12: most prominent rut funnels, and then I would, you know,
- 40:16Speaker 12: put some boots on the ground and field scout those spots.
- 40:18Speaker 12: And then but when I went in there, i'd be
- 40:20Speaker 12: ready to set them up because you've really at this
- 40:23Speaker 12: point got to start limiting your amount of intrusion into
- 40:25Speaker 12: those interior areas. So I would be looking for three
- 40:29Speaker 12: two to three different wind direction key rut funnel spots,
- 40:33Speaker 12: and my first tool to do that would be a
- 40:36Speaker 12: light our map so some of the app, you know,
- 40:39Speaker 12: different apps can get you that. You can also get
- 40:42Speaker 12: it right from your county from like our nrcs. They
- 40:46Speaker 12: print those off for me. At times we can print
- 40:48Speaker 12: them ourselves through different avenues, but they're super super helpful.
- 40:53Speaker 12: You can do like I like the black and white
- 40:55Speaker 12: hills what they call hill shade. You can get a
- 40:57Speaker 12: color hill shade. It's all whatever you're used to looking at.
- 41:01Speaker 3: Mm hmm, yeah, honest.
- 41:03Speaker 4: Actually this added light r to their app to click,
- 41:06Speaker 4: you click topo and then on the base maps and
- 41:09Speaker 4: you switch a lighter on, which is really nice.
- 41:11Speaker 3: To your point, be really nice.
- 41:13Speaker 12: That's a great that's a great feature that's going to
- 41:15Speaker 12: be super helpful, all on one platform.
- 41:18Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 41:23Speaker 4: I'm trying to think here, just because I know there's this.
- 41:26Speaker 4: There's if someone just randomly gets a new piece, you know,
- 41:29Speaker 4: whether it's a lease or they're closing on a farm,
- 41:32Speaker 4: or they knock on a door and they get permission
- 41:34Speaker 4: there's just so much excitement and anticipation all bundled in
- 41:37Speaker 4: right before the season two especially. Let me run this
- 41:42Speaker 4: quick scenario by you for someone that just knocked on
- 41:44Speaker 4: a door because they essentially heard there was a big
- 41:47Speaker 4: deer in the area and they wanted to get in
- 41:50Speaker 4: that ball game. And with that comes excitement of Okay,
- 41:55Speaker 4: now I have an opportunity of maybe tagging this specific buck.
- 41:59Speaker 3: But on the flips out of it.
- 42:00Speaker 4: You know, throughout this series, a lot of folks have
- 42:02Speaker 4: said that they wanted to be really patient, methodical, even
- 42:04Speaker 4: leading up into the season, of not pressuring a farm
- 42:06Speaker 4: too much. Where do you follow on that scale with
- 42:09Speaker 4: it being late August and you just got access and
- 42:12Speaker 4: you don't want to blow up you know, this potential
- 42:15Speaker 4: mature buck that you're after.
- 42:18Speaker 12: Yeah, you know the fact that you just the fact
- 42:20Speaker 12: you already know there's a mature buck on the property
- 42:22Speaker 12: or in the neighborhood, so you're way ahead of the
- 42:25Speaker 12: curve there. You're not trying to find one. If the
- 42:28Speaker 12: time of year you're gonna you think you have the
- 42:31Speaker 12: best chance of taking you know, if harvestingham would be
- 42:34Speaker 12: late October early November, I'm going to look for what
- 42:38Speaker 12: food sources are probably still going to be there then
- 42:40Speaker 12: for that Halloween time, places where I can start out
- 42:44Speaker 12: hunting field edges and gaining a little bit more knowledge
- 42:48Speaker 12: of the area while i'm hunting, you know, because that's
- 42:51Speaker 12: those are the first areas that you're going to start
- 42:52Speaker 12: to see rubs and scrapes around the field edges and stuff,
- 42:56Speaker 12: and you still don't have to penetrate deeper into there.
- 42:59Speaker 12: Once you hunt that, hopefully you get some eyes on
- 43:02Speaker 12: the buck that you're after. And that's when I would
- 43:04Speaker 12: kind of switch into that first week in November and
- 43:07Speaker 12: start start being very very aggressive because obviously, if you
- 43:11Speaker 12: know about this buck, somebody else probably does too, and
- 43:15Speaker 12: you know, that's that's why you can't really be super
- 43:19Speaker 12: hands off and let him come to you. I would
- 43:21Speaker 12: use the last week of October sort of as my
- 43:24Speaker 12: hunting slash scouting, with the plan of having a few
- 43:27Speaker 12: quick setups with me and moving right in as soon
- 43:29Speaker 12: as I get the intel that I need. So it's
- 43:33Speaker 12: kind of a it's yeah, it's kind of a oh,
- 43:36Speaker 12: a passive aggressive approach to hunting. You know, the first
- 43:39Speaker 12: week you're you're pretty passive hoping he comes to you
- 43:42Speaker 12: the second week, you have to go to him.
- 43:44Speaker 4: Absolutely, Yeah, no, it'll be that'll be here before we
- 43:47Speaker 4: know it. So anyone that tunes in and this throughout
- 43:51Speaker 4: the season, a lot of things changed. Maybe you lose
- 43:53Speaker 4: a piece that you were planning on hunting right now,
- 43:55Speaker 4: or maybe you get one, and there's just a lot
- 43:57Speaker 4: of a lot of things that can happen, you know,
- 44:00Speaker 4: in the next four months.
- 44:01Speaker 9: Yeah, you know a lot of times.
- 44:03Speaker 12: One thing that you know, kind of pushed me back
- 44:05Speaker 12: into What makes this question pretty relevant is we've had
- 44:08Speaker 12: years with EHD, or we've had a good scouting plan
- 44:12Speaker 12: lost the bucks that were after so even though we
- 44:16Speaker 12: had a great setup from June going forward, we had
- 44:19Speaker 12: to start over virtually in this late this is typically
- 44:23Speaker 12: when we have trouble with EHD, would be that kind
- 44:25Speaker 12: of mid mid August to early September. So it's a
- 44:29Speaker 12: very relevant question.
- 44:31Speaker 3: So there you have it. That's Steve's perspective.
- 44:34Speaker 4: And if you have a big project you've been kicking around,
- 44:37Speaker 4: or maybe you fall into this category, you still have
- 44:40Speaker 4: time to go make the big project, make the improvement
- 44:43Speaker 4: to make the season great, if you feel good about
- 44:45Speaker 4: the plan, and last but not least we have mister
- 44:47Speaker 4: Mark Kenyon to close out this episode to get his.
- 44:51Speaker 3: Opinion on a brand new farm. Where do you start?
- 44:53Speaker 6: And here we go?
- 44:54Speaker 4: All right, you just bought a new farm, you just
- 44:57Speaker 4: got a new lease, you just knocked on a door,
- 44:59Speaker 4: and you just got access. It's late August, all of
- 45:03Speaker 4: the preseason major prep projects may be behind us.
- 45:09Speaker 3: Where do I start?
- 45:10Speaker 4: Because I'm excited and nervous at the same time, I
- 45:13Speaker 4: want to make this happen.
- 45:14Speaker 6: Yeah, all right, So I am first starting with maps,
- 45:19Speaker 6: and I'm doing like a deep dive study of my
- 45:21Speaker 6: map at two levels. I'm doing a macro study, so
- 45:25Speaker 6: I'm zooming way out and I'm learning the neighborhood, what's
- 45:27Speaker 6: all around my property, How do other properties feed into
- 45:31Speaker 6: my property? How much deerb using the neighbors or the
- 45:34Speaker 6: neighbors neighbors, How does all that? How does my piece
- 45:37Speaker 6: of the puzzle fit to the larger picture? So I
- 45:40Speaker 6: really want to try to understand that. And then I'm
- 45:42Speaker 6: zooming in doing the micro map study, where I'm like
- 45:45Speaker 6: just focusing on my forty year whatever it is, and
- 45:48Speaker 6: really trying to as best as I possibly can with
- 45:51Speaker 6: the map identify likely food sources, likely, betting areas, likely
- 45:56Speaker 6: travel corridors, likely, pinch points of any kind. And I'm
- 46:00Speaker 6: pinning or circling or marking all of those key places
- 46:03Speaker 6: on the map and spending a lot of time thinking
- 46:06Speaker 6: that through. What's a lot of time, many nights, okay,
- 46:10Speaker 6: multiple nights or days around, just like studying and thinking
- 46:14Speaker 6: and like imagining all the possibilities, and like you know,
- 46:17Speaker 6: I'm looking at all the different I'm looking at cover,
- 46:19Speaker 6: I'm looking at topography, I'm looking at water, I'm looking
- 46:22Speaker 6: at maybe even soil type, or I'm looking at like
- 46:25Speaker 6: layers on Onyx where you can see where the oaks
- 46:27Speaker 6: are or where conifers are, and having vegetation types. I'm
- 46:31Speaker 6: definitely looking at crop rotations. So there's layers on a
- 46:34Speaker 6: lot of these apps now where you can see what
- 46:36Speaker 6: fields have been planted. So I would like to know, Okay,
- 46:39Speaker 6: where has corn been, where have beans been? What's the
- 46:42Speaker 6: likely rotation now this year? So I'm definitely looking to see,
- 46:45Speaker 6: you know, with like like Onyx or other apps probably
- 46:48Speaker 6: have a tool where you can see what fields were
- 46:50Speaker 6: planted and whether it's corn or beans or what that
- 46:53Speaker 6: rotation was. So I want to look at all of
- 46:54Speaker 6: those things to start thinking through where this deer might
- 46:57Speaker 6: be feeding, where they may be bedded, how they're getting
- 46:59Speaker 6: in between both, and that way, I have all of
- 47:02Speaker 6: this done ahead of time with my maps, I know
- 47:05Speaker 6: the key places. Now I can go in and do
- 47:08Speaker 6: a serious but kind of concentrate scouting exercise. So if
- 47:13Speaker 6: it's late August or early September, I am okay going
- 47:16Speaker 6: in and like intruding and seeing the place. But I
- 47:18Speaker 6: don't want to go overboard with it because my typical
- 47:22Speaker 6: rule of thumb is, if possible, I like to leave
- 47:24Speaker 6: any property that I'm hunting one undred percent alone for
- 47:27Speaker 6: at least thirty days before running season. If I get
- 47:31Speaker 6: so in this case, I'd be like right at that point.
- 47:34Speaker 6: So it's like I go in like Labor Day weekend,
- 47:37Speaker 6: and I've got one day and I'm gonna go in
- 47:39Speaker 6: there and pound pavement, and I have this map, I
- 47:42Speaker 6: have this plan, and I'm going to go and probably
- 47:46Speaker 6: do the outside edge of the property, and I'm going
- 47:49Speaker 6: to hit every one of these key points. So those
- 47:51Speaker 6: key funnels, those key convergences, the key food sources betting
- 47:55Speaker 6: area is the places that I think are hot spots.
- 47:57Speaker 6: On the map, and I'm going to go on ground
- 47:58Speaker 6: truth those places if they actually match up with what
- 48:01Speaker 6: I thought they would, I want to understand like the
- 48:06Speaker 6: pillars of this property. I'm gonna mark every little bit
- 48:09Speaker 6: of data that I see along the way, So every trail,
- 48:11Speaker 6: every scrape, every old rup, every masked tree, every you know,
- 48:15Speaker 6: either a soft mass tree like an apple tree or
- 48:17Speaker 6: a hard mask an oak tree, and mark all those things.
- 48:20Speaker 6: I'm gonna mark every major entry into the property from
- 48:23Speaker 6: the neighbors. I'm gonna be thinking through every topography future
- 48:27Speaker 6: I'm gonna add notes like if I see like a
- 48:29Speaker 6: super great looking vetting area on the slope, I'm gonna
- 48:32Speaker 6: pin that and maybe add a few notes about what's there,
- 48:34Speaker 6: what makes special. I want to learn and then be
- 48:37Speaker 6: able to remember the party actionable like information from this
- 48:42Speaker 6: all in that one day. I'm also gonna backpack the
- 48:45Speaker 6: little cameras when I do this, so if I didn't
- 48:47Speaker 6: you know, we talked on a previous episode about kind
- 48:49Speaker 6: of doing something similar with trail cameras. I'm looking at
- 48:52Speaker 6: kind of doing these two things together. So as I
- 48:54Speaker 6: go and do this one day scouting run, I'm taking
- 48:58Speaker 6: in my cameras with me. I'm setting them up so
- 49:00Speaker 6: I can set them and forget them. So there's likely
- 49:03Speaker 6: going to be what I'm gonna be setting up now
- 49:04Speaker 6: if this is like sometime like just before the season,
- 49:07Speaker 6: I'm setting up everything for hunting season information. So I'm
- 49:11Speaker 6: less worried about setting something up to get summer pictures
- 49:14Speaker 6: at this point because they're transitioning off their summer pattern
- 49:16Speaker 6: into their fault pattern. So I'm setting up on scrapes
- 49:20Speaker 6: or what I think will be scrapes. I'm setting up,
- 49:22Speaker 6: you know, a place that I think will be eventually
- 49:24Speaker 6: right funnels. I'm setting up in places that are close
- 49:26Speaker 6: to bedding where I think deer will be transitioning out
- 49:28Speaker 6: towards food. And again thinking about hunting season related intel.
- 49:35Speaker 4: Are you prepping trees and picking trees where you pine
- 49:38Speaker 4: on hunting or are you bringing any tree stands or
- 49:40Speaker 4: are you pretty much fully a saddle guy in this scenario?
- 49:44Speaker 6: Yep, in this scenario, I'm not prepping trees. I'm picking trees. Okay,
- 49:48Speaker 6: So I will be going throughout this school process and
- 49:50Speaker 6: picking And when I said I'm not prepping, I should,
- 49:54Speaker 6: I will be mostly picking trees. I often have enough time,
- 49:58Speaker 6: I will often have like a pull saw or yeah
- 50:00Speaker 6: and so, and if I have time and I've gone
- 50:03Speaker 6: through it did my full day, if there's like a
- 50:05Speaker 6: handful of those trees that I picked as like high priority,
- 50:08Speaker 6: and I have the time to go on there and
- 50:10Speaker 6: just cut some lanes or just cut player it out
- 50:12Speaker 6: enough you can get up in the tree nice and quietly,
- 50:14Speaker 6: I'll do that. If I have a weekend, I can
- 50:17Speaker 6: do that. In the second day, I'll do that too.
- 50:19Speaker 6: But I'm not worried about going and prepping a bunch
- 50:21Speaker 6: of trees anymore. I would rather just have a bunch
- 50:23Speaker 6: of places like picked out. I was like, hey, this
- 50:25Speaker 6: is pretty cool. I like this spy, like this spot,
- 50:27Speaker 6: like this spot, and then come season I can go
- 50:30Speaker 6: in there and hunt mobile with the saddle. And then
- 50:33Speaker 6: what I think works really well is that you approach
- 50:35Speaker 6: year one like that. You don't invest and double down
- 50:39Speaker 6: on any one location with a big built up setup.
- 50:42Speaker 6: And if you go in there and bring in a
- 50:44Speaker 6: big ladder stand or bring in sticks, send up hang
- 50:47Speaker 6: on and really strap it on their nice and carve
- 50:49Speaker 6: out huge shooting lanes and all that kind of stuff,
- 50:52Speaker 6: it's like an investment in that.
- 50:54Speaker 3: Place, you became biased to that area.
- 50:56Speaker 6: Bias to that place, you become like there's that like
- 50:59Speaker 6: some Yes, now you've done all that work, you don't
- 51:02Speaker 6: want to move. And I think that could be a
- 51:04Speaker 6: huge mistake to go and like set up and invest
- 51:07Speaker 6: in a place like that before you really know it.
- 51:09Speaker 6: And so what you end up doing is you like
- 51:11Speaker 6: made this purchase, and you're kind of like want to
- 51:14Speaker 6: keep believing that purchase because he put in all this work,
- 51:16Speaker 6: and then you're not willing to truly listen to what
- 51:19Speaker 6: you've saw or learned about the area and make the
- 51:22Speaker 6: small movement. So by having low investment on the front end,
- 51:25Speaker 6: so again like just going in with a saddle and
- 51:28Speaker 6: do very little majorly time investment, I don't feel bad
- 51:32Speaker 6: when I hunt that spot. I'm like, oh, that's not
- 51:34Speaker 6: quite right. I really need to be thirty yards that one.
- 51:36Speaker 6: And so next time I go thirty yards that when
- 51:37Speaker 6: I hunt it for a saddle, I'm like, oh, actually,
- 51:40Speaker 6: you know, I need to.
- 51:40Speaker 7: Be over here.
- 51:41Speaker 6: And then I've done that. And now after that first
- 51:43Speaker 6: year of hunting this new property, I've learned enough, I've
- 51:46Speaker 6: tried enough things I wasn't scared or like in some
- 51:49Speaker 6: way resistant to change. Now I know, okay, actually that
- 51:53Speaker 6: oak there on the corner by the crossing, that is
- 51:55Speaker 6: the spot. Now for a year two I will go
- 51:58Speaker 6: fully prep that cut length, maybe put up sticks that
- 52:01Speaker 6: stay up, something like that. But I'm doing it with
- 52:04Speaker 6: a truly informed opinion rather than just my first gut
- 52:07Speaker 6: instinct after having just just barely soft place.
- 52:11Speaker 4: So that's how I was don in my first year
- 52:13Speaker 4: when you said you would go in and map everything
- 52:15Speaker 4: out this picture of forty yep, how many pins and
- 52:19Speaker 4: annotations and notes would you have? And I guess even
- 52:24Speaker 4: that's a twofold question before you go there? And then
- 52:25Speaker 4: how many more are you adding when you're physically there?
- 52:28Speaker 4: Obviously dependent on the features, but this a general idea
- 52:32Speaker 4: so people can understand how detailed you're you know, really being.
- 52:35Speaker 6: Yeah, I would guess like before, so just looking at
- 52:38Speaker 6: the map before going in, let's assume it's like a
- 52:41Speaker 6: mix of egg and timber, a couple of little fields,
- 52:44Speaker 6: a couple of fingers and movie. Yeah, that might be
- 52:48Speaker 6: eight to twelve things that stood out in the map.
- 52:50Speaker 6: Maybe I was like, Okay, I definitely want to go
- 52:52Speaker 6: check that out. It could be way more. It might
- 52:55Speaker 6: be a place is way less but somewhere that though
- 52:58Speaker 6: I don't know ten to twenty eight to well, something
- 53:00Speaker 6: like that. Probably that I was like, hey, check it out, interesting,
- 53:04Speaker 6: and then you go out there for the day, and
- 53:06Speaker 6: then you're probably at least doubling that with real stuff
- 53:09Speaker 6: on the ground. It could be you know, I could
- 53:11Speaker 6: walk out of there with twenty pins. I could walk
- 53:13Speaker 6: out of there with thirty five pins. How much time
- 53:17Speaker 6: do you take to organize those? Are you color coding them?
- 53:19Speaker 6: Are you actually you know, yeah, I'm guilty. I'm guilty
- 53:22Speaker 6: of this season the on xpin and they're like what
- 53:26Speaker 6: was that? Yeah?
- 53:26Speaker 4: And then there's times where I do take the times
- 53:28Speaker 4: it'll be more detailed.
- 53:29Speaker 6: I don't color code. I do try to icon code,
- 53:32Speaker 6: so like I will have a trail camera icon, I'll
- 53:34Speaker 6: have a buck icon of that icon of scrape icon, yep,
- 53:37Speaker 6: that kind of stuff, a stand icon. So that's how
- 53:40Speaker 6: I organize them.
- 53:43Speaker 1: You know.
- 53:43Speaker 6: Also one thing I'll do that first day or two
- 53:46Speaker 6: is if I find a couple of those first few trees,
- 53:48Speaker 6: I'm like, oh this is interesting. If it's like thick,
- 53:51Speaker 6: nasty stuff, I will walk and track the trail to it,
- 53:55Speaker 6: so I know what the best quietest or easiest route
- 53:59Speaker 6: into that tree is, because that's the thing, Like I'm
- 54:01Speaker 6: not going to have pre prepped trails necessarily at this
- 54:04Speaker 6: last minute. Yeah, it's a new place, but like that's
- 54:07Speaker 6: another thing that it's a small thing just track in
- 54:09Speaker 6: your walk there, but it can really help you when
- 54:12Speaker 6: you go on it for the first time. That's another
- 54:13Speaker 6: small thing all I at there.
- 54:14Speaker 4: Yeah, I think that makes a lot of sense. And
- 54:17Speaker 4: it once again, you're excited. You just got this new
- 54:20Speaker 4: place and you want to go in there and burn
- 54:21Speaker 4: through it. But I think to your point once again,
- 54:25Speaker 4: being really methodical, and I picture in my mind, I'm busy,
- 54:28Speaker 4: just like everyone else. I am time blocking this and
- 54:31Speaker 4: I'm not thinking or doing any other obligations during how
- 54:34Speaker 4: this period. I'm solely focused on learning as much as possible,
- 54:37Speaker 4: leaving detailed notes, and so my time is efficient and
- 54:40Speaker 4: I'm not getting distracted. And I say that I want
- 54:42Speaker 4: to do that, but it doesn't always work that way.
- 54:44Speaker 6: Sure, But I think the key thing with it is
- 54:47Speaker 6: because you're so close to the season starting, what you
- 54:50Speaker 6: don't want to do, in my opinion, is you don't
- 54:52Speaker 6: want to be like, all right, I'm gonna do a
- 54:53Speaker 6: little bit this Saturday, and I'll come back next weekend,
- 54:56Speaker 6: do a little bit next Saturday, and I'll come back
- 54:57Speaker 6: the next weekend and do another next Saturday, and they'll
- 54:59Speaker 6: do some the next and the season starts that someday.
- 55:02Speaker 6: Whatever it is, you don't want a bunch of repeated
- 55:05Speaker 6: intrusions and doing it. I'd rather blow it up in
- 55:08Speaker 6: one or two days versus like blow up corner here,
- 55:12Speaker 6: in the corner here the next week, and the corner
- 55:13Speaker 6: here the next week, at the quarter here the next week,
- 55:15Speaker 6: because that is just like consistent pressure. That's gonna have
- 55:18Speaker 6: those deer more and more and more and more educated
- 55:21Speaker 6: before the season starts. That's a huge mistake. Yeah, one
- 55:24Speaker 6: bad day deer can get over pretty quick. Repeated bad
- 55:28Speaker 6: days they don't tolerate nearly as well.
- 55:30Speaker 4: Well, it's funny you bring that up, because that was
- 55:33Speaker 4: that was the ringing advice through all of the guests.
- 55:36Speaker 4: None of them said, well, I'm gonna go there on
- 55:37Speaker 4: one day and then I'm gonna think about it for
- 55:40Speaker 4: a couple of days, and then I'm gonna go back again,
- 55:42Speaker 4: and then and all these multiple trips. It's very clear
- 55:45Speaker 4: that if this happens to you, you're in this scenario,
- 55:48Speaker 4: you have to be you have to have a really
- 55:50Speaker 4: good plan, and you have to have one in one
- 55:52Speaker 4: out best case scenario to maximize your opportunity and minimize
- 55:57Speaker 4: the downside. So I think that's something that everyone should
- 56:00Speaker 4: really consider. It. Man, what an exciting time if you're
- 56:02Speaker 4: in this position. That's a really exciting time to go
- 56:04Speaker 4: learn a new piece and test your theories and then
- 56:07Speaker 4: affirm your theories for the following year if you're able
- 56:09Speaker 4: to go back. And so I think it's a really
- 56:11Speaker 4: exciting time. And hopefully all these experts give you some
- 56:14Speaker 4: clear and concise guidance, because I think that was the
- 56:16Speaker 4: case for this episode. And next week we have one
- 56:19Speaker 4: that everyone that's planted a food plot has been in
- 56:22Speaker 4: this scenario and we're diving into. If you're and you're
- 56:26Speaker 4: listening to this right now, you're probably can we release
- 56:27Speaker 4: it right now? Because you're probably looking at it. If
- 56:30Speaker 4: your food plots did not turn out how you wanted,
- 56:32Speaker 4: what can you do?
- 56:33Speaker 3: What's a contingency plan. We're diving into that next week.
- 56:36Speaker 4: With some people that have planted thousands of acres of
- 56:39Speaker 4: food plots. You guys have it. I hope you enjoyed
- 56:42Speaker 4: this episode. It was a lot of fun and I
- 56:45Speaker 4: just want to drive this home. I want to reiterate it.
- 56:47Speaker 4: Just if you do not have a brand new farmer,
- 56:50Speaker 4: you don't fall exactly in this category. The point of
- 56:52Speaker 4: this question was even if you've been hunting the same spot,
- 56:56Speaker 4: to get a fresh perspective to go in and maybe
- 56:59Speaker 4: do one last outing around, or go do the project,
- 57:02Speaker 4: or go hang another set, or the obvious spot that
- 57:04Speaker 4: felt too good and too good to be true, it
- 57:06Speaker 4: might be the best spot on the farm. And so
- 57:09Speaker 4: it's a good reset to revisit and look at farms
- 57:12Speaker 4: that you're already hunting or places that you're hunting, and
- 57:15Speaker 4: go through this checklist one last time. Because we're getting
- 57:17Speaker 4: so close to season. Hopefully this episode pointed you in
- 57:20Speaker 4: the right direction. And next week we're flipping the calendar
- 57:23Speaker 4: to September, and if you have some food plot questions,
- 57:27Speaker 4: you've been struggling the food plots over the years, or
- 57:29Speaker 4: you haven't got them in yet, that episode is going
- 57:31Speaker 4: to be just for you. So I hope you guys
- 57:33Speaker 4: enjoyed this episode, and we will see you next week
- 57:35Speaker 4: on the Back forty podcast.
