- 0:19I'm Jessica and this is Tabak K Rambles.
- 0:21We're a couple of friends review Korean dramas, and we are back
- 0:25for not a review episode. We're going to do another sort
- 0:28of freestyle episode on adult romance, more adult romance,
- 0:34grown folks romance stories in kdrama land.
- 0:39An I am joined for this episode by Carol from Kdrama Musings
- 0:43podcast. How are you, Carol?
- 0:45I'm good. How are you?
- 0:47I'm doing. Excellent.
- 0:49I would love to know maybe what you've been up to since the last
- 0:53time you were here was for the When Life Gives You Tangerines
- 0:56episode and then before that was for the Dynamite Kiss review.
- 1:00And I feel like it's been maybe a minute.
- 1:03So what are you watching currently?
- 1:06That is so true. I was thinking the last time was
- 1:10proceed of jade, but I'm still in proceed of jade because.
- 1:14For those who don't know, we went hog wild on this Chinese
- 1:19drama Pursuit of Jade. It came out this year and we did
- 1:22a two-part review over on Liliana's Tea and Soju podcast
- 1:26and the three of us had a friggin ball, let me tell you
- 1:29right now. And it's kind of been the drama
- 1:33of the year. It's consumed a lot of our
- 1:34waking hours. Are you still re watching it
- 1:38Carol? Well, I just watched bits and
- 1:41pieces. OK.
- 1:42All right. Yeah.
- 1:44I'm not watching the the whole thing, I'm just watching bits
- 1:48and pieces and I do have other shows I'm watching now so I'm
- 1:52kind of like. I'll be honest though, the
- 1:56feedback was lovely and I love seeing the messages from people
- 2:00who enjoyed that episode. And When Life Gives you
- 2:04Tangerines too was so much fun. So if you have not heard that
- 2:08please go listen. What have I been up to?
- 2:11Watching dramas, creating more content.
- 2:14I actually want to take the content seriously and yeah, do
- 2:18something you know? So 2 days ago I released my
- 2:22first sub stack. Tell me if I've shared it.
- 2:25I haven't shared it. I don't know why I haven't.
- 2:27Shared it, I was going to say 'cause if I I would have read it
- 2:30by now, but that's why God you scared me there 'cause I was
- 2:35like damn did I miss a sub stack from Carol?
- 2:38But you haven't released it yet, OK.
- 2:40No, after this I'll release it. But it's an article talking
- 2:44about the genesis of why I got into Asian dramas and the
- 2:49perspective that I gained. I'm trying to do this seriously.
- 2:52So yeah. Yeah.
- 2:54Just like an intro to Carol. At the beginning exactly.
- 2:58Oh, perf. OK, yeah, definitely gonna give
- 3:00that a read. Yeah.
- 3:01What are you watching? What's the what's the K drama
- 3:04Lance? I just finished YUMI sales 3 OK.
- 3:07Today. Yeah.
- 3:08And in the middle of like episode 7, there are only 8
- 3:14episodes. But in the middle of episode 7,
- 3:16I actually paused, went on my hinge, reduced my age
- 3:22requirements by like 9 years. What?
- 3:25And I was like. Man, that male lead got you
- 3:32epped up yo. Yo, it was crazy.
- 3:38And then when I finished episode 8, my rational cell came to my
- 3:42head and was like, girl, what the hell, It's never gonna be
- 3:45like this, right? Better go back up to like 30
- 3:48something, Yeah? You know, it's funny that about
- 3:52the because I had a listener message me today, DM me and
- 3:57Liliana, because we did a review of Nothing But You last year and
- 4:02Nothing But You as another Chinese drama.
- 4:04But it's an age gap romance. And she was like, Oh yeah, you
- 4:08guys are so funny. And I was like, girl, I don't
- 4:10remember anything that I said a year ago.
- 4:13You know, if if I do a review, I basically remember it for like a
- 4:17month and then it's gone. I don't remember anything that I
- 4:19said safe. So she had to remind me.
- 4:22She was like, oh, you know, you were talking about the age gap
- 4:25and how you guys are like in your early 30s and how a 22 year
- 4:30old coming into your DMS or, or, you know, trying to start a
- 4:33relationship with you is just like too young.
- 4:35Absolutely not. That would be wild.
- 4:39And I was like, oh, right, I did say that because 22 versus 32,
- 4:47like, boy, get out of here. I was thinking, so I'm 30
- 4:56something 8, yes. And I was just like, how much
- 5:01younger can I go realistically? And I was like, oh, maybe like
- 5:0720-7. Maybe I could I could do
- 5:10something like 27. But my youngest brother is 30.
- 5:15He's about to turn 31. So I was just like you.
- 5:19You got somewhere younger than David.
- 5:22Like what? What do you mean?
- 5:23So my friend group went through this like many years ago of how
- 5:28this is stupid, but these are things that you talk about with
- 5:31your friends and and I have a lot of guy friends.
- 5:34So they were talking about how young you're supposed to go and
- 5:37someone had an algorithm, somebody had a math to it, and
- 5:41so it was divide your age in half and add 7 years.
- 5:47So you're saying you're 3838 / 2.
- 5:50That's 19 + 7. The youngest you can go
- 5:54according to this stupid formula that they saw somewhere is 26.
- 6:01I know you're lying. What am I going to?
- 6:04What am I going to do with a 26 year old?
- 6:08So for me. So for me it'd be plus 7/24/20.
- 6:144, 24. No offense to the 24 year olds
- 6:21out there, no, but I'm not sure you can hang with with us.
- 6:26With a 38 year old, but you know what it was?
- 6:29It's just the energy like. Yeah.
- 6:33You, me was. I think she's like me.
- 6:36She's just like even not too excited, not yeah, that kind.
- 6:43And then this kid comes in and he is, he's very even, but he
- 6:47has chaotic moments and you're just like.
- 6:51You're like, maybe it can. Work just like maybe, but a lot
- 6:56of things have to line up so these.
- 6:58K dramas keep us delusional though.
- 7:00They keep us so delusional. Delusion.
- 7:04I'd love to change the age in your Hinge profile.
- 7:09Girl is having you take action and that's crazy but let me know
- 7:16how it goes. Keep me in the loop on that.
- 7:18I will, I will. I'm also watching gold land on
- 7:22Disney with perk boy Young. First two episodes fantastic.
- 7:27I knew it and I knew it. It's really good.
- 7:30The 1st 2 episodes it, it kind of reminds me of Karma just
- 7:34because that guy is in it, you know, the tall guy, the comedian
- 7:41guy. I'm blanking out on his name and
- 7:44it does have that element in it. So it's fun.
- 7:47But to see Park Boy Young, she's, I love her.
- 7:52I'm not going to shade anybody else, but I love Park Boy Young.
- 7:56She gives me the range I need and I just finished something
- 8:00else. Oh, I'm still watching Perfect
- 8:03Craft. Perfect Crown is the most
- 8:05complicated. I have the most complicated
- 8:08relationship with it. I love the way you lean back.
- 8:11I did. I was like and I did it without
- 8:15thinking. I know.
- 8:19Just I basically rocked back on my heels a bit just sitting in a
- 8:23chair. Yeah, well, so perfect crown,
- 8:27man. I've heard so many mixed things
- 8:29and you're part of the mixed feelings about it.
- 8:33Yeah, yeah. The chorus.
- 8:35Of. I'm not sure that I keep.
- 8:38I'm not. Sure.
- 8:39Yeah. I'm not sure I've come to the
- 8:42conclusion that they're wasting our time.
- 8:46Oh no, How many episodes have come out basically halfway done
- 8:50right? Oh it's done like in 4 episodes.
- 8:53Oh but I feel like they're wasting our time with not having
- 8:56piano. Suk give the range he can give
- 9:00and it's all IUIUIU so I have a bit of.
- 9:05A OK, there's a challenge with that.
- 9:07Yeah. Well, we are going to talk all
- 9:10about adult romance and in all its many forms, I guess.
- 9:16So we'll tell you more. But before that, if this is your

- 10:17Thank you so much for supporting the show.
- 10:19Carol. Let's talk about adult romance.
- 10:24This is I want to preface this by saying this is not a recap
- 10:27podcast. This is going to be a loose
- 10:30conversation for those who kind of want stories that reflect
- 10:35choice, regret, agency, and maybe are a little bit sexy.
- 10:40Maybe there is some spice to these dramas as well.
- 10:45But I mean, for the most part, the unspoken rule of romance K
- 10:49dramas is that you might have an initial hook of skinship in the
- 10:54show. You know, she trips and falls on
- 10:56his lips sort of thing. You know, some silly thing to
- 11:00get them to kiss, get them to hug something.
- 11:03And then right around episode 10 or 11, you get the first real
- 11:06kiss, the one mistakes, the one with emotion, and then you'll
- 11:09have some awful contrived reason for a late stage breakup in
- 11:13episodes 14 or 15. And then they get back together
- 11:16on the end and it's a happy ending.
- 11:17At no point do we factor in that they have sex.
- 11:21So it's kind of a chaste setup. And we're here to talk about
- 11:25that as well. You know, what are the dramas
- 11:28that fall outside the norm? These dramas that we're going to
- 11:31talk about are not beginner romance key dramas.
- 11:34I think they require a little more emotional literacy, which I
- 11:38will say, like I think by listeners, the The Cave
- 11:41Ramblers, as I don't often call them, I think you you guys
- 11:45definitely have emotional literacy.
- 11:47This is not about soft vibes only romance dramas.
- 11:53We're going to talk more about the realistic side of these
- 11:56stories. And The thing is, I don't want
- 12:00to automatically assume or portray the more realistic K
- 12:05dramas that have sex involved that people talk about in
- 12:09different terms that those are superior than the fluffy,
- 12:13chaste, they never have sex K dramas.
- 12:16You know, those have their place and I love those too, but we're
- 12:20going to just not going to focus on those this time around.
- 12:22I think what we're trying to get at more than the PG13 or rated
- 12:28RK dramas is the fact that the K dramas that are more adults are
- 12:34not ignoring power, class or gender dynamics.
- 12:38You know, these romance stories are messy and I I think that is
- 12:44an interesting thing to look at. Carol, what do you say to this?
- 12:49I'm very excited for this session because I feel like I
- 12:54guess I've grown. Yeah, It's very hard for me to
- 12:57sit down and watch a high school drama these days.
- 13:04I got to like the actor real bad for me to sit through it.
- 13:10And I think as I've grown older, I kind of like to see adult
- 13:16romance, especially because I'm single right now.
- 13:20I just like the idea of seeing the challenges that someone my
- 13:25age might possibly be going through and dating right now.
- 13:29So the last drama or the last two adults romances that I
- 13:34really liked were Love Me, which was very melancholic and The
- 13:40Practical Guide to Love. OK, Yeah.
- 13:43That that show was, yeah, it was good.
- 13:46It was good. Well, talk.
- 13:47To me, about those like, what was, what was adult about it,
- 13:51what was grown about it? OK, so let's start with
- 13:54Practical Guide to Love It stars Hajimeen and Park Sung Hoon.
- 13:58OK, it's talking about this woman.
- 14:01She has her career on straight, like she's doing really well and
- 14:07she's decided, OK, I think I'm ready to date.
- 14:09But Hachimin is working at this hotel and she says she's ready
- 14:13to date. Obviously in Korea it seems when
- 14:16you're ready to date, so getting so blind dates.
- 14:19So you ask someone to introduce you to someone, which I love so
- 14:23much and I wish we did more of over here, but whatever.
- 14:27She meets this guy and for their first date, they're having
- 14:31dinner. They're asking each other
- 14:33questions. She's being very conservative.
- 14:36You know, the natural. I'm an Angel.
- 14:40She's practically wearing a courthouse wedding dress, white
- 14:44one piece. I was just like, this is a lot
- 14:47for me. But he asked a question that has
- 14:52stuck with me and that made me feel like, oh, this is grown up
- 14:57romance. He was like, would you like to
- 15:00date with the intention of getting married?
- 15:04Oh, that's a good one. That's a.
- 15:06Good one. And I panicked that.
- 15:09Would stop me in my tracks. Yeah, intentionality,
- 15:14intentionality. Setting expectations coming in
- 15:18and communicating what your wants and needs are and being
- 15:21like hey look, I'm not here to play.
- 15:22Exactly. Yeah.
- 15:24And for Hachi Min's character, she ends up pouring, I think
- 15:28coffee or something on herself, so she has to go to the
- 15:30bathroom. But I know, but in her head she
- 15:35was having this monologue of, dude, what the hell, this is our
- 15:38first date. Why are you coming on so strong
- 15:41and, and whatnot. And that's the exact reaction I
- 15:45had. And I was just like, now, hold
- 15:47on. Am I not the same person who's
- 15:49always saying I want people who are intentional, don't waste my
- 15:53time? And then all of a sudden here's
- 15:57someone who's saying that and I'm just like, whoa, this is a
- 16:00bit too much for me, right? So they do the whole the
- 16:05annoying thing of should I text her?
- 16:07Should I not tell let me wait three days, Let me they do that
- 16:10some version of that. She obviously thinks he's not
- 16:14into her. So she meets someone else.
- 16:18Except the person she was supposed to meet brought in a
- 16:22stand in. So the standing comes to the
- 16:25date. They end up having a great time,
- 16:29but the standing is not who she thinks he is.
- 16:33And he On this date is sort of berating her because of the
- 16:37questions she's asking. She's asking very, oh, what do
- 16:41you do for work? And what do you do this?
- 16:43And, you know, like, they're not basic questions, but they're
- 16:46important questions out the gate to see.
- 16:49Are we on the same level, if you will?
- 16:52And so he was berating those questions and it got under his
- 16:56skin a little. They ended their dates.
- 16:59And then they had the most comfortable non pressure getting
- 17:05to know one another. The sparks were sparking.
- 17:09They were like at a playground playing.
- 17:12Like it was amazing. The sparks were there.
- 17:15And I was sitting there like, oh, this is how we get into
- 17:18this. I have too many options because
- 17:25both guys were solid options and in terms of career, the stand in
- 17:33was not where he needed to be. Like she's I'm working at a
- 17:37hotel, I'm a I'm a supervisor of some sorts.
- 17:40And you're on the acting struggle bus like you're trying
- 17:46to find yourself. But he decides for this woman,
- 17:49he's going to step up. So he gets a car.
- 17:52He starts acting like he's doing the things.
- 17:55So to me, I was kind of like, OK, but he's not where I would
- 18:00pick him up or I would have him join me.
- 18:04But he's doing the work. And the other guy, he has
- 18:07everything, but he's too nonchalant.
- 18:11Oh no. And it's it, it was nonchalant
- 18:16in the terms of I'm giving you your space, I want to respect
- 18:20your pace. So I guess that's why I like the
- 18:23show, because eventually both stepped up and she had to make
- 18:29the decision of where she was going to spend her time and who
- 18:35she was going to give her heart to.
- 18:38And to some people, it was an obvious answer.
- 18:40But I think for the first time, I was just like, no, it's not an
- 18:44obvious answer. I can see her with these two
- 18:47people. So that's why I liked it.
- 18:50And then love me. Yeah, love me.
- 18:55Love me. I'm going to be talking about
- 18:57that show with my dad. I convinced my dad.
- 19:00I know I convinced my dad to watch his first K drama.
- 19:05I know. Wow, yeah.
- 19:07Carol, you've been watching K dramas your whole life and your
- 19:10dad's never. Exactly.
- 19:12Exactly. Wow.
- 19:14So I Yeah, what a feat. Yeah, I know.
- 19:17So you. Want him to watch Love Me?
- 19:19He watched it, so we're just waiting for me to get over this
- 19:22cold so we can record. But I felt like you just said.
- 19:26I've watched K dramas all my life and I've always learned
- 19:31life lessons from K dramas and I've been able to talk about
- 19:35those things with people around me.
- 19:38The way I explained it to my dad was like, there's so much I want
- 19:43to talk to you about but I don't know how to start the
- 19:48conversation without AK drama. So I need you to watch this K
- 19:52drama with me. I think the main draw was the
- 19:56show is dealing with grief in many forms, but this one family
- 20:01loses their mom. So you have dad who has taken
- 20:06care of mom for many years because she got a disability.
- 20:10You have the first daughter who is a doctor, blames herself for
- 20:15her mom's accident that gave her the disability.
- 20:20And she is so depressed. That was also the first time I
- 20:24saw someone intentionally choosing to be alone.
- 20:29What? Do you mean alone romantically?
- 20:32Alone, romantically alone. She only had like 2 friends.
- 20:37OK, but she would intentionally push people away.
- 20:40OK, so she was isolating herself.
- 20:42She was isolating herself and this neighbor guy just came into
- 20:47her life and he came at a time where her mom had died.
- 20:52So I think she was also looking for some sort of connection.
- 20:57And they connected. It was just this push and pull
- 21:01of, OK, I'm going to give off myself and something happens and
- 21:05you see her retreat. Funny enough, it's son Hejin who
- 21:10did the trunk. So she was doing the same thing
- 21:13in the trunk. Oh yeah, yes.
- 21:15Where she will, like, she's like going above and beyond, and then
- 21:20she questions herself. And then you see her retreat.
- 21:24She's doing the same thing here. And the reason I wanted to talk
- 21:26to my dad about it was one because of the grief.
- 21:30I lost my mom. He lost his wife.
- 21:33And we've never spoken about it. But we talk about my mom all the
- 21:37time. Yeah.
- 21:39I just thought there's so much there for us to talk about and
- 21:43we've never spoken about my relationships or his for that
- 21:48matter. So I was just like, this is a
- 21:50great opening for both of us. But that show was it was
- 21:55beautiful. It was beautiful.
- 21:56I have no complaints about that show.
- 22:00So those two are the latest adult romance.
- 22:04It's perfect crown and adult romance.
- 22:07I'm in. I'm not sorry that came out
- 22:10really fast but, and this is horrible because I haven't seen
- 22:16it right. I have not seen Perfect Crown,
- 22:18but I don't think so. Carol what?
- 22:24What's your argument for Perfect Crown being an adult romance?
- 22:28I didn't say it's an adult romance.
- 22:30I think it's like a young adult, Roman I I don't know, She's
- 22:34graduated. She's a businesswoman.
- 22:36Right, but I don't think that the the criteria for having a
- 22:39grown romance is necessarily that the characters are older.
- 22:43OK. I think it's definitely has to
- 22:45do with the themes like you're touching on like this drama Love
- 22:49Me has grief mixed into it and a grief journey, depression
- 22:54journey mixed into the plot. I think it's less about
- 23:00perfection, you know, these concepts like desire versus
- 23:04responsibility and that love doesn't fix everything and
- 23:10choosing yourself without villainizing love.
- 23:14You know, chemistry not being enough.
- 23:16Like when love still fails despite you guys having great
- 23:20chemistry. Those dramas are the ones that I
- 23:24think I'm referring to. One could argue that all that
- 23:29you've said is in the perfect crown.
- 23:31Well. I shrugged.
- 23:37I shrugged. I'm just teasing.
- 23:38I get you. I think perfect crown is more
- 23:41for I'm about to finish high school.
- 23:44I'm in college. Like it's younger, it's younger.
- 23:47It's skewing younger is what you're saying.
- 23:49Skewing younger, Yeah. You can't compare it to a trunk
- 23:55or no No love me practical guy to love?
- 23:59Definitely not that. So it's a younger romance.
- 24:03Zeroing in on this concept of chemistry isn't enough, and love
- 24:06is still failing. The one that comes to mind is
- 24:102521 because. See, I saw that.
- 24:15That one I think messed a lot of people up because they went into
- 24:18it, He had a certain vibe. It was a coming of age and a
- 24:22period piece, and they had wonderful chemistry.
- 24:26And girl, I, as soon as he went overseas to cover 9/11, I was
- 24:35like, I don't know. And then 2521, that character
- 24:38Naido has this big complex about her mom not being present in her
- 24:44life because she prioritized her career as a journalist.
- 24:48Yeah, it's like a news anchor or something, I think was her mom's
- 24:51job. And then him knowing that I'm
- 24:55going into the same profession, I'm like, that spelled disaster.
- 24:59That had disaster written all over it.
- 25:02I felt this was a an expected, totally valid breakup.
- 25:07And the consensus, I think, from people who were up in arms about
- 25:12it was that they could make it work.
- 25:13They should have been able to make it work.
- 25:16You know, as you say that I remember feeling flabbergasted
- 25:21because obviously I didn't expect them to still stay
- 25:25together, OK. But the age gap and the life
- 25:29experience gap between those two, I was shocked there was not
- 25:35more noise about it compared to some other dramas that we've
- 25:39had. And so it was almost like, so if
- 25:43there are two hot people, we don't care about the age
- 25:45difference, so we don't care about the life gap.
- 25:49And I struggled with that. So you struggle with the four
- 25:53year age gap between the characters?
- 25:56As I said, I'm going down to 26. I know that's loud.
- 25:59I know that's loud. We.
- 26:01Were literally just talking about what's the lowest we can
- 26:05go and you're over. You're like, I've had issues
- 26:08with the four year age gap between the malee and female
- 26:12lead in 2520. One, no, I don't.
- 26:14I don't think it's the age gap. I think it was she was in high
- 26:17school and he was out of uni. Was it out of uni?
- 26:23What did he drop? Yeah, now I can't remember, but
- 26:25yeah, he was definitely college. Age.
- 26:28That's the issue I had. OK.
- 26:30You're just like Carol. That's not that big of an issue,
- 26:33but that's the issue I had. But.
- 26:36Sorry, I don't know what to tell you.
- 26:41They do grow into an adult romance, but.
- 26:45When K dramas let romance be complicated, it's kind of a push
- 26:50and pull. I think those are the less
- 26:53innocent type of stories that we are talking about already.
- 26:59You have on here romance as a bonus book.
- 27:01So romance as a bonus, book stars each of suck.
- 27:06Yeah. And she is a divorcee.
- 27:12Yeah, he's like a Tung Sing, a little brother ish kind of guy
- 27:17that has always been in her life.
- 27:21She's down on her luck. She needs a job.
- 27:25He's a writer or a editor. So he's, yeah, like a a
- 27:31publisher. Yeah, he's a publisher.
- 27:34He's always liked her. I think he's always liked her.
- 27:36So they start cohabitating. She starts working at his place.
- 27:42Might you? He didn't know she was staying
- 27:46with him. Like they had a scene where it's
- 27:49like, you're living with me. What's going on here?
- 27:52She ends up secretly living in his house at the beginning of
- 27:55the series. Oh, she takes a job as his
- 27:58housekeeper. Yes.
- 28:00Without him realizing it's her at first.
- 28:03Yeah. Anyway, she's squatting.
- 28:05Yeah, so she's squatting. Eventually he finds out.
- 28:08I think what I liked about that show was her goal was to be a
- 28:15writer or a publisher as much as he was.
- 28:20Like trying to do the whole you're my woman thing, I want to
- 28:23take care of you. I can do this, I can do that.
- 28:26She was very much, hey, I need to figure out my life, I need to
- 28:30get this done. Mind you, she wasn't really
- 28:32looking at him as a romantic interest until much later.
- 28:37It wasn't my favorite adult romance, but I think why I put
- 28:41it there was the age thing. Like they were out of
- 28:45university, like both of them were.
- 28:49She was divorced. So she does have more life
- 28:51experience than him, the young man.
- 28:54In fact, he didn't let it block him or get to him that this is
- 29:00someone who's a divorcee or who this is someone who's divorced.
- 29:04And I can't be with her and she doesn't have a life together,
- 29:09but OK, so I'm gonna support her.
- 29:11Alderman I do not like romance as well this book I looked it up
- 29:16my old my old review on tip. I can tell.
- 29:20And I gave it a two out of five. I did not like this show.
- 29:25I thought it was boring, boring, boring.
- 29:28But the moment that I really liked in the show, which I'm so
- 29:32glad that I wrote this down in a review, is this wild night that
- 29:35the female lead has with the two wicked witches of the publishing
- 29:39house. She goes clubbing with you son,
- 29:42the baddest bitch and cognam, and they make their way to her
- 29:46luxurious apartment for a second round and they're hammered and
- 29:50they spill their guts about their failed marriages and there
- 29:52would be marriages. And this part really sticks out
- 29:54in my mind. I remember this even to this day
- 29:57because it was surprisingly emotional.
- 29:59So Usain's character chooses her career and passion over a
- 30:04marriage and then another character is talking about her
- 30:08divorce and this one was also quite emotional.
- 30:11Made me almost cry. There was a flashback of her.
- 30:15It's like a shoe shopping fiasco with her husband not defending
- 30:18her. And it was like really the
- 30:20strong that broke the camel's back.
- 30:22That was the moment that we're flashing back to.
- 30:25She's explaining. Of course, that wasn't the only
- 30:27reason that she divorced him. It was how she wanted someone
- 30:31who helped and supported her, not someone who was embarrassed
- 30:34of her, not someone who was was not truly passionate about her.
- 30:40It was almost like that moment of I'm not going to settle
- 30:42anymore. You know, I'm not going to
- 30:43settle for this guy who's just tolerating me.
- 30:46Yeah. Despite not me liking the show
- 30:47as a whole, this side character's story was poignant
- 30:53and quite adult, I thought, yeah, in the grand scheme of
- 30:57things. So I'm glad you brought up
- 31:00Romance is a bonus book, even if that's not my favorite show.
- 31:03I'm sure people really enjoy that show listening.
- 31:05And they, and they like the noon of romance and they like the
- 31:07cohabitation. And I, I also used to work in
- 31:10publishing. So it was like wildly inaccurate
- 31:12publishing stuff that I was like reeling.
- 31:15You know, I'm sure people that work in healthcare or are
- 31:19doctors and they watch a medical show are like, what the hell is
- 31:23this? I can't watch this because it's
- 31:24so wildly wrong. Yeah.
- 31:27I felt that Way about Romance is a bonus book but.
- 31:30That that's how I felt about on the way to the airport and even
- 31:35Gold Land right now. Oh, really?
- 31:38Yeah. And it's like inaccurate because
- 31:40you, you know too much, basically.
- 31:42Exactly. Oh, I worked at an airport for
- 31:44like 7 years, so I'm watching and I'm like, yo, I have to to
- 31:50stop myself and be like, you're not in that industry anymore.
- 31:53It's OK, Carol. People don't actually know these
- 31:56things. Just watch.
- 31:58Yeah. So I feel you.
- 32:00Going off of the romance is a bonus book, you know, romance
- 32:04after the fantasy is gone theme. What are some other shows that
- 32:08do the same thing you've got here?
- 32:10Go Back Couple, which there is a big deep dive on the podcast
- 32:13feed for Go Back Couple if you want to listen to a review of
- 32:16it, but it's been a minute. What are your thoughts on Go
- 32:19Back Couple? Go back couple is I don't know,
- 32:23I think I like second chance romances.
- 32:27OK. Sure.
- 32:28When you recognize your mistakes and you try and save it before
- 32:34it's too late or you even come back and you're like, hey,
- 32:38you're the person for me. I think we had What's the name
- 32:43of the guy in search WW? Otankiong.
- 32:46Yes, in go back couple. Yeah, he's second of all leading
- 32:50go back couple so he. Oh my God, He.
- 32:52Is so fine. Oh, my God, Yeah.
- 32:57I was thoroughly on his side. Yeah.
- 33:00I was just like, I'm all for girl.
- 33:03Yeah, leave your guy. He did not appreciate you
- 33:06enough. Go back to Jiang Kiang or go to
- 33:09Jiang Kiang. But there is.
- 33:12I think what I appreciate about adult romance is people
- 33:16recognize just how much time and effort and they start to reflect
- 33:22on the ups and downs, and they sort of do an aggregate of was
- 33:26it really always that bad, right, right.
- 33:30Or were there some good moments? And were the good moments enough
- 33:35for us to like? Sustain us.
- 33:37Move on to the next year. Yeah.
- 33:39So there were some good moments that kept us going.
- 33:44That's what I like about second chance romance.
- 33:48I'm not sure if it if fully like embodies a second chance
- 33:52romance. Go back couples.
- 33:54Definitely a second chance romance.
- 33:56The interesting I think part about go back couple was I think
- 33:58you had such a great second male lead in chunky young and you
- 34:02were totally like, girl, just ditch your husband and go with
- 34:06chunky young. Like start over with chunky
- 34:08young. You're hot, you're young.
- 34:10You know you can get any guy you want.
- 34:12Just go get chunky young. You know, her husband is so mean
- 34:16and biting and scathing. And I think what ultimately
- 34:20brings them back together is their family unit, right?
- 34:23They they didn't want to give up on, I think it was a son.
- 34:26I think they had a son together. And they were like, if we don't
- 34:30get back to the, we'll never have this son, right?
- 34:32Yeah. It was quite a different take
- 34:36than I have seen in other K dramas where they're kind of
- 34:40like, look, I know it's not always going to be great.
- 34:43And I and I know that we can reconcile, but also let's get
- 34:47our shit together because we have a son that we adore.
- 34:51Yeah, that's what I mean by they start looking at just how much
- 34:56they've put in and is this something that we really can't
- 35:01work through, right. And it's going to take a lot of
- 35:03work, but are we willing to do the work?
- 35:07Both sides? I'm not going to carry the
- 35:10labor. If we're going to go and give
- 35:12this a second chance, you better be class prefect running the
- 35:18show and I'll be the assistant because yeah.
- 35:21Something else and go back couple is that you start to
- 35:24realize that's because they both go back in time and to their
- 35:27younger selves is that he really does see her right.
- 35:31He understands her and there's lots of moments in that show
- 35:35where you're like, oh damn, like he has the leg up on Chunky on
- 35:38because Chunky on obviously doesn't know her, has not lived
- 35:42a life, a married life with her. It's kind of a comfort right to
- 35:47have this person who you know, knows all of your
- 35:49idiosyncrasies, knows what you're allergic to and, and, and
- 35:53sees you in that way versus starting over and having to like
- 35:57dig hard packed ground all over again for you to get to this
- 36:02level. It's the whole point of am I
- 36:05really willing to go do the awkward dates again at this age?
- 36:12I know she's back younger, but technically her mind is still a
- 36:1640 something year old. Am I really gonna do that?
- 36:20You ask any freshly divorced person these days, they'll be
- 36:23like dating at like I, I have no idea what to do.
- 36:27So it's easier that someone already knows everything about
- 36:31you and is willing to do the work to accommodate, to support.
- 36:38They just made sense as a couple.
- 36:41But that scene where she loses her footing in high heels, Oh my
- 36:47God. And she's just like going down
- 36:49she goes. Careening down this steep hill
- 36:52that I mean, what, what is it? They're going.
- 36:54The three girls are going clubbing her and her bestie,
- 36:56yes. Back in.
- 36:57She's been back in her young body.
- 36:59She's hot. She they want to go clubbing.
- 37:02So they all wear really impractical shoes, heels to go
- 37:06clubbing. And they have to walk down this
- 37:07hill. And instead of taking the long
- 37:09way around, they actually decide to brave it and walk down this
- 37:13hill in these really high heels. And she just goes careening.
- 37:16She goes, she loses control and start tumbling down this hill.
- 37:21And Chang Kyung catches her at the bottom of the hill and saves
- 37:25her ass and when she like slams into his body, I was like.
- 37:30Yes. And he wasn't uniform.
- 37:34He wasn't. He was cheating.
- 37:38I was like, this is cheating. It is cheating you.
- 37:40Can't be doing this. You can't do this to me.
- 37:44Yeah. Anyway, go watch Go back Couple.
- 37:45There's a lot of great moments in that.
- 37:47It's so funny as well. It's just very comedic.
- 37:49But yeah, it's quite serious. Like the stakes are kind of high
- 37:52at the end of the day. You have some other dramas here
- 37:55under the divorce tag, Alone in Love, Familiar Wife, The World
- 38:00of the Married. I have no frame of reference for
- 38:03the World of the Married. I have still not seen it.
- 38:05It's really hard to find. Oh, oh, damn.
- 38:09I swear it was on Vicki when it came out the first time.
- 38:12Girl, I don't know where you you need to find it, but just find
- 38:17it. It's that girl.
- 38:19No, it is, and she's coming out with another drama like that,
- 38:23but it's with Steve, No, I think.
- 38:26Steve No, no. Reverend hottie from Pachinka.
- 38:29Yeah. Oh my God.
- 38:32Yeah. I think he's also in perfect
- 38:34crown. Yes, but he's such a loser.
- 38:37He has been hot since day forever, yeah.
- 38:41Him and oh, did you watch that? No.
- 38:46On Netflix, whoever is listening.
- 38:49Behind every star. Behind every star, Yes.
- 38:52OK. Oh, my God.
- 38:53You need to watch behind every star.
- 38:55What? It is fantastic.
- 38:57Get out. It is fantastic.
- 38:59I'm not kidding. Yo, Carol, let me tell you
- 39:02something. Let me tell you something.
- 39:03Linda, listen, Linda, listen. Behind every star, he was in IT
- 39:10and he was like an auditor and he came to the entertainment
- 39:16company to do an audit. And there was one of these
- 39:19managers who she's more free spirited and she likes a guy.
- 39:25She's gonna get a guy, and she set her eyes on him.
- 39:30Home Girl was pulling every seduction plan out of the
- 39:34playbook. Oh, trying to get him OK.
- 39:38And he was just like, I'm serious.
- 39:41I'm here for the job I'm not doing.
- 39:43Guess who folded at some point? Oh, oh, oh, it's.
- 39:50It's kicking my feet good. So yes, chat to me about world
- 39:54of American though OK I. See you getting comfy in the
- 39:57seat like just. So, OK, you have this doctor.
- 40:03Yeah, right. I'm following.
- 40:04She is a fantastic doctor. First of all, we're in a rich
- 40:08neighborhood. Think cul-de-sac, that kind of
- 40:12vibe. Everyone is all the neighbors,
- 40:16very rich, doctors, lawyers, whatever.
- 40:18They're going to have a birthday party for this woman.
- 40:21This woman Kim Hayes character comes out into the garden and
- 40:28she realizes that her husband is having an affair with this women
- 40:36have her age. And that's Han Soi.
- 40:39And that's Han Soi. And Han Soi was hot in the show.
- 40:44Yeah. Yeah.
- 40:45She goes into the car. She goes into the trunk.
- 40:48She sees, I think, extra clothes, a photo of them.
- 40:53She picks up a pair of shears, and she's having this moment of
- 40:58I'm gonna stab him. The issue is the picture that
- 41:02she saw, all her neighbors were in it.
- 41:06So it's like a couple's, a couple's vacation that
- 41:09everybody. Went.
- 41:11To exactly yes, so she's losing her marbles because everybody.
- 41:17Had a party. Everybody knows.
- 41:20Oh my God, heads would roll. Heads would roll, yo.
- 41:23Oh my God. And Han Soi being the bad bitch
- 41:27that she is, of course she goes into the hospital no to taunt
- 41:32this woman. She doesn't know that the woman
- 41:35knows, right? Tell me why babes went to her
- 41:40and it comes out that she's pregnant.
- 41:42Who's pregnant? Han Soi.
- 41:44Han Soi is pregnant. You're going to have to stop
- 41:47telling me everything about the show.
- 41:48I got to watch the show. Girl, this shit crazy.
- 41:51OK, so why? So how's this grown?
- 41:54How's how's this show grown? It's just the betrayal, OK, The
- 42:00keeping up appearances, you know, in front of other people.
- 42:05We know this relationship is not working.
- 42:08Everybody knows this relationship is not working.
- 42:10But everybody has been pretending to play this game of
- 42:13perfection in a very gritty way that we don't see because the
- 42:19other couples are are also going through really difficult
- 42:22hardship. But to one up each other or to
- 42:25make themselves look good, everyone is sort of swallowing
- 42:29their pain and not addressing their pain just so that they can
- 42:35save face. And, oh, they have a teenage
- 42:39son. So we're also talking about the
- 42:41psychological damage that he is going through.
- 42:44Yeah. Her best friend, Kim Hay's best
- 42:48friend, also a doctor in the hospital, was also condoning the
- 42:54cheating. What?
- 42:55But smiling to her face. So that's what I mean by Oh my.
- 43:00God, so that's like friendship breakups.
- 43:02In Yeah, exactly, exactly. So there was just a lot in there
- 43:08A. Lot of meat on the.
- 43:09Are you going to watch? Are you going to look for it or
- 43:11should I give you like a major moment?
- 43:13No, no, don't give me anything else.
- 43:14Don't give me anything else, OK, Because I don't really want to
- 43:17watch for myself. I I think someone's have
- 43:19requested it at some point. Also OK for the like to cover
- 43:23it. On the podcast you mentioned Han
- 43:25Soi. Han Soi has another drama that
- 43:27I'd love to talk about and it's nevertheless the way you're
- 43:32groaning already. This show is a lesson in what
- 43:36not to do. This show is all chemistry
- 43:39without compatibility. It's a situationship final boss,
- 43:44power dynamics acknowledged but not resolved in any way.
- 43:50It's the story of this horrible toxic relationship that costs
- 43:55her herself respect and instead of choosing something that is
- 44:01better for her, which is basically choosing herself,
- 44:04choosing not to enter into this relationship or keep keep up
- 44:07with this man. She's like, I don't care.
- 44:11I still want to be with him. I see you like just over this
- 44:17show. Do we nevertheless piss me off
- 44:20and. OK, now how did it piss you off?
- 44:25I first of all, I don't see it as an adult romance.
- 44:29Really. OK.
- 44:31No, as I'm watching it, I'm like, this is the only kind of
- 44:34nonsense that will happen when you're in your early 20s
- 44:38because. See, that's the thing.
- 44:40Why I don't? Think that it's necessarily I we
- 44:42said this, I said this before that a grown romance is it's not
- 44:46that dependent on age. I I I get it now.
- 44:49I I agree. You have a, a, an Ave., which
- 44:55is, yeah, this is the stupidity of youth because had this story
- 45:00taking place and she's 10 years older, she maybe not, would not
- 45:03have made this mistake. Do you know Hanseli if she were
- 45:08on Tiktok? She were on Tiktok in those
- 45:10days. She'd be giving The Who the F
- 45:13did I date story, You know, because that guy was crazy.
- 45:21That guy was I and I think what drove me mad was I didn't
- 45:26understand his why. That's what I didn't like about
- 45:32the story because I'm just like, but why are you like this?
- 45:35I'm not seeing any emotional trauma.
- 45:38I'm not seeing any. My girlfriends cheated on me, so
- 45:42I'm gonna cheat or, or girls used to call me ugly and I went
- 45:46for surgery and I became better. So now I became the asshole.
- 45:50It was just like, what's wrong with you?
- 45:52And that was it. I'm not saying that you always
- 45:55need that, but I just hated him. And honestly, I think everybody
- 46:01knows I'm a Songkang hater, so. I mean, I am too.
- 46:08I haven't flashed our card in a long time, but I am a card
- 46:13carrying some kind of hater as well.
- 46:18I don't want to. I really don't want to deep dive
- 46:20on what I don't like, but this character is a red flag.
- 46:25He's a menace to all women and he doesn't even know it.
- 46:28He's flirtatious and tantalizing and expert manipulator.
- 46:32It just, it takes Hansoe's character like half the show
- 46:35just to tell him no at it. Just no for anything.
- 46:39They give you next to no information about him.
- 46:41Like to your point, yes he is a blank page of a person he has.
- 46:46There's nothing. We see no parents, we see no
- 46:49siblings, we see no vibrant home life.
- 46:50There's no friends of his that we can like.
- 46:53Oh maybe we can triangulate his personality based on who he's
- 46:55hanging out with. No, nothing.
- 46:57Nothing at all. So it's frustrating to see his
- 47:01small deceptions and the glimpses into his private life
- 47:05are still we're still not able to connect this character in any
- 47:10meaningful way. So it really did feel like she's
- 47:13torturing herself. Yeah.
- 47:16To be with him. Yeah, and that was so silly to
- 47:20me. Yeah, it is.
- 47:22And all of her friends suck. Like in a way this is adjacent
- 47:26to the world of the married because people suck in in world
- 47:30of the married. Her friends deceived her and
- 47:33didn't let her know about this affair that was so audacious and
- 47:39obnoxious. It was in everyone's face except
- 47:41for hers. That's a that's a kind of
- 47:44portrayal. And all of her friends in the
- 47:46Nevertheless show are not really friends.
- 47:48They talk shit about her. They gossiped behind her back.
- 47:52They sometimes didn't even want her around.
- 47:54They never seemed to care for her.
- 47:56It was like all of her friends were just acquaintances that she
- 47:59met in art school and it they're just 10 Moody kids surrounding
- 48:02her at all times. I mean, a lot of issues in that
- 48:06show that make it sort of unlikable and every character
- 48:11unlikable. I think the 19 plus nature of
- 48:15the show where they're constantly having sex in the
- 48:17show made everyone sit up straighter because it's not
- 48:21typical in AK drama. Yeah, those scenes, some of the
- 48:25scenes were really, really hot, not gonna lie.
- 48:28They were they? Yeah.
- 48:30Something that I remember nevertheless too, is that it
- 48:32kind of started with her going to her boyfriend's art
- 48:37exhibition. Yes.
- 48:39The piece that he has on display at this exhibition is a
- 48:43sculpture of her butt naked, bent over a counter, obviously
- 48:48in the throes of coitus, mid coitus.
- 48:52It is an extremely vulnerable sculpture of her that he never
- 48:56told her he was making. She had no idea.
- 48:58She just showed up and everyone's like, Oh my God, is
- 49:00that the girl in the sculpture? And it was incredibly
- 49:03humiliating for her. I thought that was like, what a
- 49:06hook to start the show on was to have her in this compromising
- 49:12situation and betrayed by a lover, you know?
- 49:16You've said something. OK, you've said something.
- 49:20Because I think that scene really, I don't want to say give
- 49:24me pause, but I thought when I saw that the show was going to
- 49:28be talking about consent and what is permissible, what's not
- 49:33permissible in a relationship and whatnot.
- 49:36But she goes on to have pretty much the same thing with Sunka's
- 49:40character. And so like a dog.
- 49:42Returns to its vomit. Yeah, so it was just like at the
- 49:48end of the show, I. Didn't learn nothing.
- 49:50That's not. Sorry, I just.
- 49:55The way you jumped up, you were like, yes, you hit on it, yeah,
- 50:01but I might just waste. My time.
- 50:03No, I don't. Well yes, I think it wasted a
- 50:06lot of people's time, but this just goes to show that chemistry
- 50:09is not proof of love. That's true.
- 50:11So that's true and. That way, the show, the show has
- 50:13grown in that way. That's true.
- 50:16One of my really good best friends, anytime I'm talking to
- 50:20a guy and I'm talking about him, I'm always saying, oh, we have
- 50:24banter. And she's like Carol, you always
- 50:27concentrate on banter. And that's not the only thing.
- 50:30I'm like, I get that, but that's important to me.
- 50:32I need banter. Until I grew up and really
- 50:36understood, I break the banter. Oh, so I throw the ball and when
- 50:41you don't respond, you're out. But if you respond, I'm like,
- 50:45oh, OK, OK, OK. Until I realized, no, no, I'm
- 50:49the sauce. I'm making these guys nervous
- 50:53and I'm. Carrying this team here.
- 50:55Exactly. Yeah, exactly.
- 50:57So I wish we had seen something like that, I guess.
- 51:01Some of the stories that I like regarding adult romances and
- 51:05grown stories have to do with like the timing is off.
- 51:09In a relationship, the timing is off.
- 51:11Something in the rain comes to mind and Record of youth comes
- 51:15to mind. I wanted to hear more about
- 51:18something in the rain. What do you mean timing's off I.
- 51:22Don't think that she was ever in a position to accept this man,
- 51:28to accept Tung Han's character into her life.
- 51:31She's such a weak willed character.
- 51:33Weak willed. And I think her family, despite
- 51:37everything, all the drama that happens with their Nuno romance
- 51:41and how her mom comes between them and her work situation, the
- 51:47workplace sexual harassment issues that happen, you know,
- 51:51she's got she's got a lot on her plate.
- 51:53I don't think she was ever going to fight for that relationship
- 51:55later on when you get that time jump, which is madding.
- 51:59And you see that much the same way as Han Soy's character.
- 52:02Nevertheless, she didn't learn anything.
- 52:04And she has another shit boyfriend who's treating her
- 52:07terribly, but he's her proper age, you know, an appropriate
- 52:10age for her, but he's awful. You are pissed.
- 52:15You're pissed with this character, but she realizes
- 52:19she's made the wrong choice. The way that she corrects
- 52:22everything is she basically says I'm done with this job.
- 52:27I I've seen this thing all the way through the sexual
- 52:29harassment case or whatever. I've seen it all the way through
- 52:33and I'm done. I'm tired.
- 52:35And she goes, I think she goes to Cheju Island and like parts
- 52:38ways with her family, like disentangles herself finally
- 52:42from her family and her mom. And at that point, she is ready
- 52:47to accept a relationship with Tung in who does the big work of
- 52:52coming to her and saying I'm sorry when really, I'm not sure
- 52:56yet had anything to be sorry about.
- 52:57But he apologizes to her and they get back together finally
- 53:01at the end of the show. But it's it's not quite the
- 53:04satisfying ending that everybody wanted.
- 53:06And it was all of this drama that felt unnecessary because
- 53:13it's all down to her personality.
- 53:15OK. In that way, I feel like she
- 53:18needed a few years. Here's the thing, and I'll push
- 53:21back just a little bit. Do it.
- 53:24I, I don't think it was a right person wrong time situation
- 53:29because yes, she was weak, but I think she was weak because she
- 53:37hadn't anticipated that society and mostly her mom would be so
- 53:46against the two of them together.
- 53:48And so she's never had to do that work.
- 53:52Like some of the stuff her mom said was absolutely cruel, like
- 53:57throwing in someone's face that they're orphans or some Oh, it
- 54:01was absolute rubbish. I hate the mom.
- 54:03I never want to remember her again if I.
- 54:06See her on the street. Oh, it's on sites, man.
- 54:11It's on sites. I have a few words.
- 54:13But with her, I felt like she was #1 she was much older than
- 54:20him #2 they had that relationship of her best friend
- 54:25is a big sister to this guy. 3. She lives in Korea.
- 54:32Just the whole social classes and and all the stuff that makes
- 54:38society sometimes challenging and she knew all that.
- 54:42I feel like she was a woman who was going with the flow of
- 54:45society and even the sexual harassment case and the way it
- 54:49was handled, it was almost like what a lot of women experience
- 54:54in the workplace and the bullying at work, what felt like
- 54:58bullying at work and all of that.
- 55:00So she was just going with the flow and almost like, this is
- 55:04what women experience. There's nothing different or
- 55:08there's nothing special or there's nothing alarming because
- 55:12I've heard this from so many women or I've seen this from so
- 55:16many women over and over again. And I don't think she even had a
- 55:21template for what a good relationship could look like
- 55:25because her ex too was kind of trash.
- 55:29Yeah, in the way he spoke to her and the way he treated.
- 55:32Her mind you, he ends up like kidnapping her.
- 55:34It's like this whole thing, it's, it's an entire mess.
- 55:39It's an entire mess, but what made it work for me?
- 55:44And it's the same thing that's working in UV cells for me.
- 55:49I feel like the exuberance of youth on the side of the guy and
- 55:57that blind belief that society doesn't matter, the people
- 56:03around us don't matter. I'm just, you're my person and
- 56:07I'm going to push forward for you.
- 56:09And I really think that in a Nuna romance, you need that kind
- 56:15of energy because. Naive optimism.
- 56:19Yeah, you do. Because at my age I'm thinking
- 56:24life is set. I look at a 2 second
- 56:28conversation with a guy and I know exact.
- 56:30I can map out exactly how it's going to end.
- 56:34So I'll immediately say this is not for me.
- 56:37You do your thing, I'll do my thing, goodbye.
- 56:40But with a younger guy, it's like, I don't know whether they
- 56:43don't know or they don't care. Maybe a mixture of both and they
- 56:49just go for it. I understand why she left Tujeju
- 56:54and she's just like, I can't go back on my word, I can't go back
- 56:59on my thoughts. I just need a clean slate to
- 57:02start afresh. And if I don't find a guy or if
- 57:05I don't get married, this is my lot in life and that's it.
- 57:10And she would have gone on that path with her friend at the cafe
- 57:15or whatever he would have had in every life to come back to her
- 57:21and say, hey, I'm still here for her to be like, oh, OK, maybe I
- 57:26can change my law in life. That's why I don't think it's
- 57:30it's wrong time. I do think that it took.
- 57:35Her time to find her dignity. Yeah, yeah.
- 57:38Anyway, so. If she needed that time away
- 57:40from her family. She needed time to And The thing
- 57:44is, the intervening relationship is so damning 'cause I think
- 57:48she. He shows up at a wedding of a
- 57:50mutual and she's there arguing with this asshole and you're
- 57:54just like why? Why did she make that mistake
- 57:56all over again? She found some other douchebag.
- 58:00But I think that's the programming.
- 58:02Right, and that's what I'm saying is that like she had this
- 58:05beautiful relationship that was in a vacuum, right?
- 58:10Like they they got their start without anybody knowing about
- 58:15their relationship. There was number family
- 58:17involved. The sister didn't know her awful
- 58:19mother didn't know the brother who's best friends with the
- 58:23malely tongue in don't know. It was beautiful.
- 58:26And and that's what sucks about it is that you saw how great
- 58:29they were together once the world, you know, their world
- 58:34found out about it. Everyone was was making a stink
- 58:38about it. Literally everybody hated it.
- 58:42The fact that this initial shock has worn off right, of them
- 58:46being together. It took it took years.
- 58:48She had another shitty boyfriend.
- 58:50They they were both unhappy and it finally became a better time
- 58:55for her that she's like, calm down, I guess a bit.
- 58:59And like I said, found her dignity that like now it's OK.
- 59:02Yeah, yeah. Which is why I think timing.
- 59:06However, yeah, OK, that's not the only thing about this show
- 59:09that is incredibly grown. But yeah, they, they're
- 59:14compatible. That's what sucks is that
- 59:16they're so compatible. They're so in love.
- 59:19And it just it, they couldn't make it happen.
- 59:21She could not, like, get over herself.
- 59:23OK. Yeah.
- 59:24No, that's true. She's so filial.
- 59:26But that's because she has bought into her program to be
- 59:32filial, to not rock the boat at work or wherever, to just try to
- 59:38survive in this environment we're in, where he's like, I
- 59:43just arrived from the US, I'm riding my bike to work, I'm
- 59:47gonna ride circles around you. Like he was just so playful in a
- 59:53way that she never was. But yeah, I get you.
- 59:57I agree with you. I think she definitely needed to
- 1:00:00grow up for them to work again. And the biggest grow up moment
- 1:00:05was just ending things with her mom.
- 1:00:09I mentioned Record of Youth and really quick.
- 1:00:10I also didn't like this show, but this one ends with they're
- 1:00:15not. They're not together at the end
- 1:00:16of the show. They don't make it.
- 1:00:18It's almost up to interpretation.
- 1:00:20They kind of meet after a long time and they meet sort of as
- 1:00:23old friends. That's the vibe that you get
- 1:00:26from these two. It stars Pacbulgam and Pacsidam.
- 1:00:31This is a very realistic show. Just like Something in the Rain
- 1:00:34where you know the female lead is hustling.
- 1:00:37She has a full time job, a condo that she proudly owns, career
- 1:00:41aspirations to be a famous makeup artist with celebrity
- 1:00:44clientele, and she's working hard, like to hone her craft,
- 1:00:48and she's busking in on the street as a live stream makeup
- 1:00:51artist. She's doing everything she can
- 1:00:54to build credibility and she is not this damsel in distress in
- 1:01:00this show, especially when it came to the romantic
- 1:01:03relationship with Pak Ball Gums character.
- 1:01:05She was very down to earth. She was practical.
- 1:01:08She understood that his life as a struggling aspiring actor was
- 1:01:13also in flux and she was passionate about his success and
- 1:01:17being there for him when he needed and of course backing off
- 1:01:22when he needed as well. So she was right.
- 1:01:24Really intuitive of a female lead.
- 1:01:27Pak Ball Gums character is like a very passive character though.
- 1:01:33I see you making faces like you're just like oh man girl.
- 1:01:37What's your rebuttal? Do you have thoughts on this?
- 1:01:40Character I hated the show. No, it's it's not good.
- 1:01:45I I didn't like the show. I only liked 1 scene OK, The
- 1:01:50scene where he's acting and I don't know whether he was a
- 1:01:55gangster or something. Yes, he's in a suit and he's
- 1:01:58fighting. Yes, that was the only scene
- 1:02:02that I like in the whole show because I was just like, this
- 1:02:05man can act and you people are playing in my face with this
- 1:02:09nonsense. Dude, Speaking of, you mentioned
- 1:02:13consent. This show has a really steamy
- 1:02:16consent moment where they have a kiss in the car and Hejun, which
- 1:02:21is Pacquiao Gum's character, asks for asks for permission
- 1:02:241st. And I was like, Oh my God, he
- 1:02:28said. I think the direct quote is
- 1:02:29there's something I want to do, but I need your permission
- 1:02:31first. Yeah.
- 1:02:34We have crazy eyes and he doesn't even say what he has to
- 1:02:37what he wants to do. She reads his expression and
- 1:02:40then gives him permission and they have this amazing soft
- 1:02:44kiss. It reminded me of church tongue
- 1:02:46soft kiss from the wedding singer.
- 1:02:48And she follows that up with I've thought about it and you're
- 1:02:51always allowed. Can I be too talking about like,
- 1:02:54are we always allowed to kiss each other?
- 1:02:57And what he says in response is do whatever pleases you, girl.
- 1:03:06No, I ascended. I ascended.
- 1:03:10So anyway, even though the show is not very good, the show has
- 1:03:13really good consent moments and a practical relationship that
- 1:03:18sort of runs its course. And they they break up at the
- 1:03:20end of the show. So there's that.
- 1:03:23It was youth shows are I'm not a youth anymore.
- 1:03:28I've I've accepted it, but like youth shows have that energy of
- 1:03:35we're hustling. We're trying to make a name for
- 1:03:37ourselves. Like we can't be together
- 1:03:40because I'm hustling and I can't take you on right now.
- 1:03:43And I know you're dealing with your own thing.
- 1:03:46So go do you be great and I'll be cheering you on.
- 1:03:51And if we meet at the end, we meet at the end.
- 1:03:54If we don't, we don't. Right record of youth had that
- 1:03:57Lala land ending. Not a lot of people like that.
- 1:04:02I think we have to talk about, I mean I was just talking about
- 1:04:06some lines that are really good in record of youth, which is not
- 1:04:08a good very boring, but we have to talk about the Worship Me
- 1:04:13line in my liberation notes. Yo girl, there are moments in
- 1:04:18life. Go.
- 1:04:22Everybody needs a worship you moment.
- 1:04:27I think I replayed that. I still replay that moment.
- 1:04:32It's up there with would you like to date with the intention
- 1:04:35of getting married? Yeah.
- 1:04:37Yeah. Like that's a grown man.
- 1:04:40I know myself kind of statements and that was magical.
- 1:04:47That was magical. My liberation is this
- 1:04:49interesting because it's not quite a romance drama.
- 1:04:53It's a really strong, depressing slice of life show that has all
- 1:04:59of these siblings who kind of a raging against the mundane,
- 1:05:04banal parts of life. You know, you talked about grief
- 1:05:07and losing a mother character in another drama.
- 1:05:11This drama, My Liberation notes, also deals with that and how the
- 1:05:16family dynamic fundamentally changes when the mother passes
- 1:05:20away and how they have all of these issues with communicating
- 1:05:25with the father, so on and so forth.
- 1:05:27So I really, I thought all of that was just excellent.
- 1:05:30It's so brilliantly written that show and the romance between Mr.
- 1:05:35Goo and are female. Kim Jong UN's character, Yes, it
- 1:05:40is Yummy Jong. Yummy Jong is the character's
- 1:05:45name. So Mr. Gu and Yummy Jong, I
- 1:05:47don't recommend falling in love with an alcoholic, but she made
- 1:05:51it look really classy in the show.
- 1:05:54And the way that they navigate their various issues that they
- 1:05:59have his alcoholism, which is like so shocking.
- 1:06:03Like when they enter the. I think that there's one point
- 1:06:05where the brother and one other character goes inside Mr. Goo's
- 1:06:08house and the floor is covered in greens, Hoji bottles that are
- 1:06:14gleaming in the light. And you're just like, Oh my God,
- 1:06:17that is a shocking amount of alcohol that this man has
- 1:06:20consumed. Moments like that really stick
- 1:06:22out my mind as being like, what are we?
- 1:06:25What are we watching here? Like this is saying something
- 1:06:27really profound. And the worship me line is one
- 1:06:30of those moments as well, you know, because she could have
- 1:06:33said like, let's start dating, you know, but the worship me
- 1:06:37line is imply so much more. The way that he starts to
- 1:06:42worship her is, you know, seeing her meeting the demands that she
- 1:06:47has, meeting her needs. I think her hat flies across
- 1:06:52some Gulch there on their property.
- 1:06:55Was it was it a train track? I can't even remember.
- 1:06:58No, it was like a a huge gutter. OK, and he gets a running start
- 1:07:04and bleeps Olympic style across to get her hat for her.
- 1:07:09You know, I think the thing with Yummy Jung's character was she
- 1:07:14was invincible in society and invincible at home.
- 1:07:20And so his worshipping her, like you said, was seeing her and
- 1:07:24seeing her emotions and acknowledging her emotions and
- 1:07:28sort of trying to support her. So meeting her when she's coming
- 1:07:32back from the train, it took a long ass time for sis to get to
- 1:07:35work. And I've done that.
- 1:07:37My commute used to be two hours to work and from work.
- 1:07:41And I was just like, oh, by the end you're so exhausted and
- 1:07:46here's someone who will get you an ice cream or will get you a
- 1:07:50bun and and he will also get his soldier bottle.
- 1:07:54But I think the conversation around the alcohol and his
- 1:07:58drinking, I guess I questioned is it OK if he's not harming
- 1:08:05anyone because. He's a drink.
- 1:08:08Oh, well, that's yourself. That's your business.
- 1:08:11That's not my business. That's not my business.
- 1:08:15Well, The thing is. That's, that's what's
- 1:08:16interesting as well. That's what's cool, Yeah.
- 1:08:19About the show is that Mee Jung doesn't try and solve his
- 1:08:21problem. Exactly.
- 1:08:23At all. Yeah, I agree.
- 1:08:25She just, she just met him where he was at and she just
- 1:08:29concentrated on what he could give her and nothing beyond
- 1:08:34that. And I don't know if that's
- 1:08:36because she herself believed that at the time she didn't
- 1:08:42really need anything else or she didn't deserve this or what.
- 1:08:46Like, I don't know. I think her her character was
- 1:08:50suited for someone like him. Yeah, she bottled her emotions.
- 1:08:56Yeah. To the point where you're almost
- 1:08:58bamboozled that she doesn't have any.
- 1:08:59Yeah, but she's an incredibly emotional character, deeply
- 1:09:04discontent and lonely. She had a great poker face,
- 1:09:08valued her privacy and privacy of thought, and quite a soulful
- 1:09:14character. And she sees the same thing in
- 1:09:17Mr. Goo, right? The sort of like caged soul.
- 1:09:21Yeah, I guess, until she wanted something different for herself
- 1:09:24and she was bold enough to go after it is when she realized I
- 1:09:28can't be with this guy. Yeah, she shocks him.
- 1:09:31Back to life basically with the worship me.
- 1:09:34Yeah. We could sit here and do a whole
- 1:09:36My Liberation Notes podcast episode.
- 1:09:40We could. They soothe each other, and I
- 1:09:43think that's the important part of the show is that they kind of
- 1:09:45just were therapy for each other in a lot of ways, so it was
- 1:09:50intriguing to see them interact and heal over time.
- 1:09:55I agree, I like what you have in the notes about desire.
- 1:09:59Without fantasy, there was no La La Land like Pretty Woman.
- 1:10:05There was nothing about that fantasy like romance about this
- 1:10:11show, but they still cared for each other and that was their
- 1:10:16person. And it just it definitely
- 1:10:19challenged my thoughts because I one hand I'm like, how can you
- 1:10:24see danger and you walk towards it and you're like, this will
- 1:10:29not affect me. I'm here to just be with you in
- 1:10:33this time. I don't.
- 1:10:35I don't know if I could do that. One thought that I remember for
- 1:10:38the show, my liberation notes, and this will be like the last
- 1:10:42thing I say on it, is that MI Jung talks about how she gets
- 1:10:47through the day because she's kind of hateful and she's sort
- 1:10:49of spiteful on the inside. But she says, I get through the
- 1:10:51day by collecting chunks of happiness. 7 seconds of joy.
- 1:10:56At the end of the show, you see him doing that, going about
- 1:10:59this, this day, and he sees a shy girl in an elevator playing
- 1:11:04hide and seek with him. 7 seconds of joy.
- 1:11:06He thinks he buys some liquor at the drugstore and accidentally
- 1:11:09drops a 500 Wan coin into the gutter.
- 1:11:11But as he moves closer to pick it up, it's perfectly balanced
- 1:11:15on a single grate. It never fell in.
- 1:11:18And so he is like, stunned at this small miracle.
- 1:11:22And in that same motion, he, like, apparently stops drinking
- 1:11:25cold Turkey. Like he puts down the bottle of
- 1:11:28alcohol as a gesture of, you know, sobriety.
- 1:11:31You know, hopefully he never picks up the bottle again.
- 1:11:35I love that it's not said explicitly, Like none of this is
- 1:11:39said explicitly. And how he decides to turn over
- 1:11:42a new leaf. Everything about the show is
- 1:11:44subtle. I I love that about my
- 1:11:47liberation notes and the sort of intimacy that it portrays,
- 1:11:52because it's not really sexual intimacy at all.
- 1:11:55Loud show, yeah. One show that I brought up in
- 1:11:57the Sad K Dramas episode with Lola was The Red Sleeve, and I
- 1:12:02think the Red Sleeve is kind of grown and it surprised people
- 1:12:06because it was a love that was constrained by power.
- 1:12:11Yes. I think the ending of that
- 1:12:14surprise people, but really it was sort of a bittersweet love.
- 1:12:19I think that was a good representation of when love
- 1:12:24interacts with power and you're not on an equal footing.
- 1:12:29Because I feel like if she had been of noble birth, that it had
- 1:12:34been recognized and her family or whoever was still alive and
- 1:12:39they were a minister and, and they were trying to get
- 1:12:42political power, etcetera, etcetera, I don't think their
- 1:12:46love would have ended in the same way.
- 1:12:49I 100% think she would have still been lonely.
- 1:12:53That's without a doubt. Because I find it's very, from
- 1:12:58what I've seen, there are a lot of lonely married women, which
- 1:13:02we don't talk enough about. But anyway, that's for another
- 1:13:05day. I just feel like because she was
- 1:13:08a servant before she was put to the side, the system put her
- 1:13:13aside. I'm not sure it was necessarily
- 1:13:16him. He definitely made some
- 1:13:18decisions, but I think the system kept her in a in a space
- 1:13:23that it wasn't fair to their love.
- 1:13:26Oh, I like that. I mean, their love.
- 1:13:28It goes so far that on her deathbed she's like, I don't, I
- 1:13:32don't want to do this again. Next, this time you see me in
- 1:13:35the next slide, don't talk to me.
- 1:13:38I don't want to hear about it because it was so detrimental to
- 1:13:42her to lose her freedom. Even though she loved him, and
- 1:13:45she loved him very deeply, It cost her a lot.
- 1:13:49It did. It did.
- 1:13:50And that's something that in the beginning she fought so hard
- 1:13:54against. Like she has seen the cost of
- 1:13:57love on women in relationships. And she's like, I don't want any
- 1:14:02of that. I want to be the rich auntie I
- 1:14:05want to be. I want to be like the Joan of
- 1:14:09Arc I like. That's my track.
- 1:14:12I don't need this kind of love. But because of who he was, I
- 1:14:17just, I guess, just his affection for her.
- 1:14:21She was swallowed up by it and put in a chamber.
- 1:14:28Yeah. And so her life did not turn out
- 1:14:32how she had dreamed it would turn out.
- 1:14:36And she did. I think she lost more than she
- 1:14:40definitely not lost more than he did.
- 1:14:42So I can understand her when she says, you see me next time, go
- 1:14:46the other way. She's like, I never want to be
- 1:14:49with you. I like next life.
- 1:14:52I'm allergic to you. Yeah, another period piece that
- 1:14:57it's not the same, but it has a lot of layers to it and it's my
- 1:15:02dearest. Oh my TRS, my God yes.
- 1:15:07Talk to me about it. Man, I'm just thinking like this
- 1:15:11guy, this guy went to war for her and she was with everybody
- 1:15:17else but him for the longest time.
- 1:15:19She's very proud and arrogant of a character and just kind of
- 1:15:23unlikable until she gets humbled by wartime basically and grows
- 1:15:29up, right. She was very she was a child at
- 1:15:31the beginning of the show and she grows up in tumultuous
- 1:15:34times, having to be a leader for the other female characters in
- 1:15:39the show, assertive. And all of these qualities that
- 1:15:42made her unlikeable make her make her a survivor.
- 1:15:44But their romance feels very mature.
- 1:15:47It feels so mature, feels grown ahead of its time.
- 1:15:52Like for this time period, it feels ahead of its time because
- 1:15:54she gets captured and is sold into slavery.
- 1:15:58He gets her out, but not before being completely devastated by
- 1:16:02her circumstances and where he's found her.
- 1:16:06And there's a lot of stuff that's left unsaid.
- 1:16:09You can kind of guess that what kind of experience she's had,
- 1:16:12that she's maybe been sexually assaulted while being enslaved.
- 1:16:17And that's a death sentence in this like, deeply Confucian
- 1:16:21patriarchal society. It's a shunnable offense, you
- 1:16:26know, a divorceable offense. When she finally reveals what
- 1:16:31happened, she's completely vulnerable with him.
- 1:16:34He is so kind and caring toward her.
- 1:16:37I, you know, he says something like I would tell her that she
- 1:16:40was because she gives it in a hypothetical, right?
- 1:16:42She tells him the truth in this hypothetical.
- 1:16:44Like what if I told you this? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:16:47And he's so gentle with her and says, you know, I'd give her a
- 1:16:51hug because she she had a hard time.
- 1:16:53Yeah, that drama. And it's a beautiful moment.
- 1:16:56Yeah, I like what you said about it being a mature drama, even
- 1:17:01though technically you could say maybe she was 19 or 20 at that
- 1:17:06time. I mean similar to Naido in 2521,
- 1:17:11but I digress. You're doing too much.
- 1:17:18Not in hands up like Freeze. You need to watch.
- 1:17:25That's so funny the way I reacted to that, like, Oh my
- 1:17:27God, I can't believe you're bringing that up.
- 1:17:29But you're right. I no, no, you don't.
- 1:17:32Wasn't she 18 or 17 or some shit like that?
- 1:17:36God, I think she was a maybe 18 or 19 I think at the start of
- 1:17:41the show. At the start of the show, yeah,
- 1:17:43yeah, I thought she was 16 at the start of the show.
- 1:17:48I think they should. The show takes place over
- 1:17:49several years and at the end when they break up, the ages are
- 1:17:5225 and 21. OK, then, maybe I was doing too
- 1:17:55much. But back to my dearest.
- 1:17:58Yes, yes, I'm pleased. I wonder if romance, adult
- 1:18:04romance, can be without trauma. Oh.
- 1:18:09And I think it's can, but I wonder if I don't think it can
- 1:18:14in a historical drama context, but I think it can in a modern
- 1:18:19drama because the practical guide to love, no trauma.
- 1:18:22Well, a female lead, her parents don't like each other and you
- 1:18:26know, they're separated, if you will.
- 1:18:28So there's a there's a little bit of trauma, but not like my
- 1:18:31dearest level, no. I think the historical, it's
- 1:18:35usually kind of a larger than life story and.
- 1:18:37Exactly. You do have, I mean, heavy
- 1:18:40trauma and and that's, I think, yeah, common for true
- 1:18:45historicals, right. Yeah, And my dearest, it really
- 1:18:50boiled down to she did not believe him because there's a
- 1:18:55scene that sticks in my head when she was supposed to meet up
- 1:19:00with him and they were going to run away together and she never
- 1:19:03showed up. Years later, they're having a
- 1:19:05conversation and he's like, why did you choose them over me?
- 1:19:10And she said, because you are fine.
- 1:19:13Like all those other people needed me and I could be a hero
- 1:19:19for them. But you, you're your own hero.
- 1:19:22Like you got your shit together. You're you're fine.
- 1:19:25And he's like, what made you think I'm fine?
- 1:19:28What made you think I could live a life without you?
- 1:19:34It's because homeboy was too capable.
- 1:19:36I don't know what to do. Too confident?
- 1:19:38Oh. No.
- 1:19:41Oh, no, no. Was that Justin Bieber?
- 1:19:46Oh, no. Oh no.
- 1:19:48She's confident. Exactly.
- 1:19:51OK, I'm sorry. I need to bring it back in.
- 1:20:02I know I see you like just trying to read it in.
- 1:20:06Exactly anytime I hear like a sound, I always do a TikTok
- 1:20:12sound that matches it and I'm just I get carried away.
- 1:20:15So I need to like pull myself back in.
- 1:20:18But because he was so capable and because he gave that Playboy
- 1:20:22energy, she felt like, oh, he wasn't taking me as seriously,
- 1:20:28which was crazy. Which was crazy because it makes
- 1:20:33me feel like she was seeing herself in him because now I not
- 1:20:38now. But then I was wondering, are
- 1:20:41you not taking your love for that weasel seriously?
- 1:20:46Because the stuff you were trying to do with him, that's
- 1:20:51what Homeboy is doing with you, and you're not accepting it
- 1:20:55because to you, you're playing with Weasel at the end of the
- 1:21:00day. Oh.
- 1:21:00Is Weasel are you talking about the second male lead?
- 1:21:03Oh yeah, Who else will I be talking about?
- 1:21:06Talking about the guy who married the best friend.
- 1:21:09I call him Weasel. He was Weasel.
- 1:21:11OK, yeah, I love your nickname, Weasel.
- 1:21:16What is the name of that character?
- 1:21:18I don't even know. Yonjun.
- 1:21:21Weasel, Yonjun. Weasel, Yonjun.
- 1:21:24I just felt like the methods EE Jiang Hyun's character used were
- 1:21:31the same things that Kichi's character or Kichi was using in
- 1:21:36the beginning, so she never took it as seriously and for her.
- 1:21:42She thought she was. Going to be liked, yeah, yeah.
- 1:21:45She thought she was getting played and so she chose other
- 1:21:50people. And she was wrong.
- 1:21:53Wrong. Wrong.
- 1:21:55Let's talk a little bit and then she was super wrong.
- 1:21:58Let's talk a little bit about second chance romance.
- 1:22:01Again, I know we mentioned go back couple earlier, but there's
- 1:22:05two that I would love to talk about and one is our beloved
- 1:22:08summer, which I think is low key a ground show.
- 1:22:10I think a lot of people had issues with our beloved summer.
- 1:22:13They thought it was boring and they thought it was slow.
- 1:22:16What? That's with Cherishik, right?
- 1:22:19Yeah, Tehushik and Kim Dummy. Oh, I like that one.
- 1:22:23I really love our beloved summer.
- 1:22:26It is like a warm blanket on a cold day, and it's quite
- 1:22:30comforting to show. But that relationship is a
- 1:22:33second chance romance. It is.
- 1:22:35She basically has to get over her own complex.
- 1:22:39Yes. With him, because he he's lived
- 1:22:41kind of a great life and she's had to struggle for everything
- 1:22:44she's got. You know what it is.
- 1:22:46Another example is she's a type A or she was a type A character
- 1:22:51and he's definitely a Type B guy.
- 1:22:55Yeah. And there's some resentment
- 1:22:57towards type B people. Oh as a type A?
- 1:23:01Because what do you mean? I'm working 5011 different jobs
- 1:23:07trying to make ends meet and you're just existing.
- 1:23:12You're. Just trying little pictures and
- 1:23:15you got a full ride scholarship to study abroad and you're just
- 1:23:19not going to take it. Exactly.
- 1:23:23And not only that, you don't seem to care about life and the
- 1:23:27things that I care about. Yes, it's the difference between
- 1:23:32a very careful person and a carefree.
- 1:23:35Person and honestly I understand their resentments because
- 1:23:40personal story but I used to have a home girl and pandemic we
- 1:23:46both lost our jobs. We were doing the same jobs and
- 1:23:50she went on, she went home and she was living at home and she
- 1:23:54would call me every day telling me about how she wasn't happy
- 1:23:58and and her parents are making her pay rent.
- 1:24:02Mind you, I've been paying rent since I was 18 or 17.
- 1:24:06So I was like, your parents are making you pay rent for the
- 1:24:09first time in your life, and we're like 30.
- 1:24:12Yeah. So and then it was always like,
- 1:24:15as soon as she had a challenge in life, I would be the first
- 1:24:20call. She'll tell me what it is and
- 1:24:23she'll say what should I do? And she'll be crying and she's
- 1:24:26like, please tell me what to do. I don't know what to do.
- 1:24:29And I found myself being resentful because I'm just like
- 1:24:34my friend, the challenges you're going through it, it doesn't
- 1:24:39hold to the a candle to the challenges that I go through.
- 1:24:43And I don't know why this is a big deal.
- 1:24:45And I think it's because when I was growing up, my dad was a
- 1:24:49very critical thinking. You will sit there and you'll
- 1:24:53solve the problem and you'll tell me why.
- 1:24:56So I got annoyed that other people don't do that.
- 1:25:00I didn't have the patience. Figure it out.
- 1:25:05Yeah, I didn't have the patience for people who didn't figure it
- 1:25:08out. And I had to learn through that
- 1:25:11and be patient and realize, hey, other people have like,
- 1:25:15different experiences. But I did have a conversation
- 1:25:18with her and I was like, girl, you got to figure it out.
- 1:25:21You have to figure I can't keep giving you advice when I think
- 1:25:27it was also, I wasn't getting the support I thought I wanted
- 1:25:32to. So it was just like, why am I
- 1:25:35always supporting you and nobody is supporting me?
- 1:25:37It was a very childish time in my life.
- 1:25:39I accepted. But yeah, with our beloved
- 1:25:43Summer, I felt like that with Kim Dami's character.
- 1:25:47I think her name was Cook Yongsu or Yongsu.
- 1:25:51I think that's right, yeah. Go with that.
- 1:25:53So Jansu is like I am hustling my ass off and all you had to do
- 1:25:59was scribble in your book. Never disparage.
- 1:26:03One, we're not trying to disparage artists, OK?
- 1:26:06No, we're not. I don't.
- 1:26:07Want anybody coming to my teams and being like I draw for a
- 1:26:09living. I don't like what you said about
- 1:26:11our OK, OK. Oh my God no, I draw too.
- 1:26:15Please. I'm just talking about the type
- 1:26:18A mental mind of Wow. I don't feel like you worked as
- 1:26:24as hard as me. And you wouldn't understand me.
- 1:26:28You wouldn't understand because she's working through her own
- 1:26:31complexes. So she had to, yeah, she had to
- 1:26:35work through her own. So I really like that about our
- 1:26:39beloved summer. And it feels valid when they
- 1:26:42finally kind of get back together.
- 1:26:43And then he asked like, why look, why did we break up?
- 1:26:46I'm not even quite sure. So yeah, I love that.
- 1:26:50And, you know, the regret of giving up on it and stuff like
- 1:26:54that because they had something special and they were young and
- 1:26:57they were in love. And you know, she breaks it off
- 1:27:00so suddenly. So I love, I love that about our
- 1:27:02beloved 7 Feels grown. The other one that I wanted to
- 1:27:05bring up was what comes after Love.
- 1:27:07This is a very beautiful show. It's one of those J drama K
- 1:27:12drama crossovers. Oh yes, with the cute Japanese
- 1:27:16guy, yes. That's why, yes, this story, I'm
- 1:27:21not going to spoil it, but it's basically a very bittersweet
- 1:27:24story. Reminded me a lot of the before
- 1:27:26trilogy a lot. You know, they have this
- 1:27:29transformative experience together.
- 1:27:31They fall in love, but then they part ways, they reunite and he's
- 1:27:36written a book about her that's inspired by her.
- 1:27:38It's like to AT very the before trilogy.
- 1:27:42It's another second chance romance that feels I.
- 1:27:46Agree. It's on Vicky.
- 1:27:47I think it's still on Vicky if you want to watch that.
- 1:27:50But yeah, it was a very beautiful cross country.
- 1:27:55Collaboration. Yeah.
- 1:27:58I think the last thing that I wanted to chat about was dramas
- 1:28:02that do sex. The first up love to hate you.
- 1:28:07Oh my God, let's talk about love to hate.
- 1:28:10You do it. That show was for grown folks.
- 1:28:15It that's what I'm saying. That's what I'm saying.
- 1:28:19That was adult romance and I'll and I'll give you AI guess a
- 1:28:24difference when you watch Practical Guide to Love with
- 1:28:29Park Sung Hoon and Hachimin. They had a innocence about them
- 1:28:35even though they were in like their mid 30s and that pissed me
- 1:28:40off so much. It felt like they were in a
- 1:28:44relationship for the first time ever and they were doing the
- 1:28:48whole even though he knew what he wanted.
- 1:28:51It was just like, oh, can we hold hands?
- 1:28:54And there was just a purity that purity culture comes through
- 1:28:59where in love to hate you. It felt more practical.
- 1:29:04I like you, you like me. Let's let's get on when they did
- 1:29:08get to that point first. It was just set, Yes, the whole
- 1:29:12thing about it was just so sexy. It was so bad yo.
- 1:29:17We're just looking at each other.
- 1:29:19I know. Yeah, it, I mean, I love, love
- 1:29:22to hate you and I, we could do a whole podcast episode.
- 1:29:25I'd love to hate you. But really, that's one where the
- 1:29:28sex is not like you mentioned the the the purity culture
- 1:29:32that's pervasive in K dramas. That is not the case in this
- 1:29:36this this isn't like the first time they've ever heard of the
- 1:29:39birds and bees. Like, you know, we're grown,
- 1:29:42we're mature, we can talk about it.
- 1:29:44I can sleep over your house. You know, I'm a freaking lawyer.
- 1:29:48You know what I'm saying? Like I have a whole ass career.
- 1:29:53So love to hate you is on this list.
- 1:29:54I also wanted to bring up Hit the Spot.
- 1:29:56Yeah. Hit the Spot is about 2-30
- 1:29:59something gals running a sex podcast and there is loads of
- 1:30:03sex in the show, pretty pretty explicit, but they talk about it
- 1:30:08like the dynamics that are at play and they talk about sex
- 1:30:13toys in the show, all kind of stuff.
- 1:30:15It was a great forward show, which which I don't want to say
- 1:30:21Korea is not forward. I think they're very forward.
- 1:30:24I do question that purity culture BS and I tie it in with
- 1:30:31just the pressure they put on women and misogyny and all those
- 1:30:34things. But if you're looking at shows
- 1:30:37from way back when, let's say Somerset, right?
- 1:30:40So we're talking like 2008 ishore earlier.
- 1:30:45Even then you watch AK drama by someone and you go see them in
- 1:30:50AK movie. Oh my God.
- 1:30:53Damn, you're like, where did the purity go?
- 1:30:57And that's why when I watched Konyu in the trunk, I knew what
- 1:31:01his ass looked like already. You know what I'm saying?
- 1:31:03Yes, because I think you in movies and the woman.
- 1:31:09Yo, if you. Haven't what is that he's having
- 1:31:11he's having sex with? She did a crash course in
- 1:31:14romance. Yes, and.
- 1:31:16Tone do yon. Yes.
- 1:31:18Tone do Yon and Konyu did this movie called A Man and Woman,
- 1:31:23and I think they're having sex in a remote sauna in Finland.
- 1:31:28Do I have that correct? It was a sauna cabin.
- 1:31:32Yeah. Yeah, I knew about.
- 1:31:36It that that movie was a very complicated right person, wrong
- 1:31:43time. Desire does not equal safety.
- 1:31:46Like all the things that you've written in your in your notes,
- 1:31:50that movie embodied it. Love versus responsibility and
- 1:31:56the sex scenes. Jesus Christ.
- 1:31:59OK, Oh my God, we have to talk about search www.which yes, that
- 1:32:05was the very first review that you were on on Payback.
- 1:32:08Yes, my baby. My baby.
- 1:32:12But there's a lot of sex in that, and the relationships are
- 1:32:15pretty well done, like all three of.
- 1:32:17Them. Yeah, Especially the woman who's
- 1:32:20married John Hagen's character. So John Hagen is, how did you
- 1:32:28remember an amazing actress? I don't know.
- 1:32:30OK. Keep going.
- 1:32:32No, no, no, no. Let me let me clarify.
- 1:32:35I think about her a lot. Oh, really?
- 1:32:37I do especially. Because of her husband.
- 1:32:41I thought about her before her husband because I guess I don't
- 1:32:45want to say I was there when they got married, but I think
- 1:32:48they got married in 2009. And I was like, in my, I'm
- 1:32:53reading every blog, I'm waking up to watch stuff.
- 1:32:56Like I was there in my head. So I loved them as a couple.
- 1:33:00And I understood way back when that she was making a huge
- 1:33:04sacrifice and she was the biggest star when they got
- 1:33:07married. So when all that shit came up, I
- 1:33:11was like, damn, see this, this is what we're talking about when
- 1:33:15women sacrifice so much in marriage.
- 1:33:18And then, you know, he passed on.
- 1:33:20And I've just been waiting for her to come back and for the
- 1:33:26entertainment industry to give her a chance to come back.
- 1:33:30So I've been following her career.
- 1:33:32She's coming up with a drama this month called Reborn Rookie,
- 1:33:36so I'll be watching. But anyway, yeah, I loved her
- 1:33:42character in Search WWW because her marriage was so complicated.
- 1:33:47It was awful. Yes, it was.
- 1:33:50That man loved her and at the same time he did it or did he
- 1:33:56like it was just So what kind of relationship is this and why is
- 1:34:00it still working? They just understood their roles
- 1:34:04and their partnership. And I do think he adored her
- 1:34:07because he was throwing everyone under the bus just so that
- 1:34:12nothing would touch her. And eventually they do get back
- 1:34:15together and it's so cute. But he.
- 1:34:18Loved her to the point of destruction.
- 1:34:21So I also want to bring up and this is an oldie the In Need of
- 1:34:26Romance series. Do you recall this series in
- 1:34:31need of? Romance.
- 1:34:32I need romance. I'm sorry, I need romance.
- 1:34:35Do you recall the I Need Romance series?
- 1:34:38I remember 1. I think I remember the others
- 1:34:42more. I remember 1 the best.
- 1:34:47Really. Yeah.
- 1:34:49But you know why? Because I haven't watched the
- 1:34:50other two. So I need I need Romance was
- 1:34:56basically Korea's answer to Sex and the City.
- 1:34:59Yes. And it had these ladies
- 1:35:02traipsing around in various states of romance and they were,
- 1:35:08they were having sex. And it was quite revolutionary,
- 1:35:11I would say, for the K drama landscape.
- 1:35:13Yeah, I'm trying to think. I think there were some other
- 1:35:17dramas like Thalja Spring, which did some stuff there too.
- 1:35:23But I hear you. Talk to me about Thalja Spring.
- 1:35:26Oh wow, Thalja Spring is about a 33 year old woman and we don't
- 1:35:33see her the actress acting anymore but I believe her name
- 1:35:37was Cherim. Cherim.
- 1:35:39And if I got her name. Right.
- 1:35:41It is Ted Tedim. I don't know how.
- 1:35:43How did you do that? Stop it.
- 1:35:45It is and even key is in it. E Kimmel is in it.
- 1:35:49Yes. OK.
- 1:35:51Listen, OK, so she's a a home shopping host.
- 1:35:56Yeah, TV host. No, a producer or a host.
- 1:35:59One of them, it's been a long time, people, but she gets
- 1:36:03dumped and it it's very much, I'm finding myself I'm going to
- 1:36:09make it work, kind of show where it centers around, I want to say
- 1:36:14two or three women. One of them is a much older lady
- 1:36:19who also is a host. Think Miranda Priestly.
- 1:36:24So she's very fashionable. She's very cutthroat.
- 1:36:27She's very sexy. Has all the men.
- 1:36:30Yeah. Has all the men wrapped around
- 1:36:34her finger. And she even at some point in
- 1:36:38the show, gets pregnant. So it's like a geriatric
- 1:36:42pregnancy. And they talk about her
- 1:36:44experience and all of that, which I thought was fantastic
- 1:36:46too, But with Chering. Chering was a mess.
- 1:36:51I'm like home girl, you can't be 33 and not have your shit
- 1:36:55together. And she ends up hiring E Minke's
- 1:36:59character to be a pretend boyfriend because she doesn't
- 1:37:03want to be embarrassed around her social circles.
- 1:37:07So he's a boyfriend for hire. They just start with the hijinks
- 1:37:11and he ends up cohabitating with her at one point, which I love.
- 1:37:18A good cohabitation, like put me under the same roof.
- 1:37:21I love that. Forced proximity for the win.
- 1:37:25Exactly, in this show he looks like a beggar.
- 1:37:29What do you mean he looks like like a?
- 1:37:32Like a look of photos. Hold on now, I'm going to look
- 1:37:34up photos of him. He looks like a homeless person
- 1:37:37in this show and it wasn't like the fashion kind that we see on
- 1:37:41the streets these days. Wear the shirt has holes and
- 1:37:44it's Balenciaga or some shit. No, no, it was like he didn't
- 1:37:48really care. So he was always challenging
- 1:37:51her. She's trying to get him to dress
- 1:37:53up and and be perfect and whatnot.
- 1:37:57And he's like, I don't care about these things.
- 1:37:59You should care about me. And if you want me to do all
- 1:38:02those things, then buy my shit. Come to find out, this matter is
- 1:38:06a lawyer. He's a what ass lawyer yo.
- 1:38:11Oh. My God.
- 1:38:12OK so where can I watch Talja Spring?
- 1:38:17That's another thing you have to find.
- 1:38:20It used to be on Vicky. I wonder if it's on Cocoa?
- 1:38:23You're right, it's on Cocoa right now.
- 1:38:26See. I know my shit.
- 1:38:27Yeah, you do, You do. OK.
- 1:38:31So Talja Spring, it's a spicy, the show spicy.
- 1:38:34It's spicy. OK.
- 1:38:36I I, yeah, it's spicy. Especially with Lee He Yong's
- 1:38:41character. She's very.
- 1:38:43I'm a grown woman. Don't don't play games with me.
- 1:38:46I want you. You come, I say go.
- 1:38:48You go. Like it was.
- 1:38:50Yeah. Oh wow.
- 1:38:52Yeah, she was really good at that.
- 1:38:54Are there any other shows that you would love to bring out?
- 1:38:56Have you seen Hyena? No, no, I haven't.
- 1:39:01Why that's No, that's a legit question.
- 1:39:04Why haven't you seen Hyena Listeners?
- 1:39:07Hyena is on Netflix. Do yourself a favor.
- 1:39:09It's starring Juji Hun and Kim Jesu.
- 1:39:12I don't know why I know the names, but it was a grown up
- 1:39:16show where it was a mix. They're both lawyers and it's
- 1:39:21like seduction on law. Who's gonna win?
- 1:39:25What do I need? To do, to win.
- 1:39:26That's why I watch it, 'cause they're lawyer, it's a law.
- 1:39:29I don't do OK. You didn't watch Secret Love
- 1:39:33Affair. Let's talk about Secret Love
- 1:39:35Affair. Is that with UIN?
- 1:39:37Yes. OK, yes, I've heard of the show,
- 1:39:40but tell me about it. Just what are you doing with
- 1:39:43life? It's not like I'm not watching
- 1:39:47anything. Secret Love Affair came out
- 1:39:52couple of years ago and it stars UIN and Kim Hee.
- 1:39:57So it came out 2014. So oh.
- 1:40:02But Kim PE is an instructor, I think classical music and Yuan's
- 1:40:09character is a genius student and they get into an illicit
- 1:40:14affair and just trying to cover it up.
- 1:40:17Kim PE is character is married and the husband is in their
- 1:40:21circle and their friends are in their circle.
- 1:40:24So I think, mind you, Kva did world of a married.
- 1:40:29I just think she's fantastic at those psychological thriller
- 1:40:33romance shows. So that's my cell to you.
- 1:40:37OK. We we talk about desire and
- 1:40:41power and it blows up in their face.
- 1:40:45And who gets punished and should someone be punished?
- 1:40:48He's a uni student. She's a uni professor.
- 1:40:51Like, yeah, so there's talk about consent, power, desire.
- 1:40:56Gosh, desire. Oh, Speaking of desire, OK, bad
- 1:41:01guy with Kim Nam Gill. No.
- 1:41:04Please tell me you've watched it.
- 1:41:05No, no. Oh my God.
- 1:41:08OK, please add it to your list. That's all.
- 1:41:10Oh. My God, what's it about?
- 1:41:14Like tell me about it. Bad guy Kim Nam Gill goes in for
- 1:41:21revenge I believe, and he falls in love with.
- 1:41:28Hey, he looks really good in this show.
- 1:41:30Yo-yo let. Me tell you something that.
- 1:41:33Real good. Oh my.
- 1:41:35God the bad. Synopsis Oh my God, the plot
- 1:41:39synopsis from Asian. For the show.
- 1:41:43I'll read you the first sentence.
- 1:41:44Yeah, Konok is a sexy man and highly ambitious.
- 1:41:50Period. That's the first sentence of the
- 1:41:52synopsis for Bad Guy. And they're not lying.
- 1:41:59Dying. Yeah.
- 1:42:01This is from 20/10/2010. There is a scene in the show
- 1:42:06that lives right free in my head.
- 1:42:08Oh Lord, there's an elevator scene.
- 1:42:11Oh, you know when you're in the elevator and there's so many
- 1:42:15people around, so you're pushed back to like the back against
- 1:42:20the wall? Do they take it to the FTH
- 1:42:22degree? Cause I've seen that a million
- 1:42:24times. And they do this hand touching
- 1:42:29caressing thing in the back. Lord, I'm mercy.
- 1:42:33Lord have mercy. It was, it was something.
- 1:42:37It was something. And are you going to watch it or
- 1:42:41should I? No.
- 1:42:42Don't spoil it. I don't spoil it for me.
- 1:42:44Don't spoil it. I will watch it eventually for
- 1:42:47sure. Oh man, damn, I want to spoil it
- 1:42:51but I don't want. To OK any other shows you want
- 1:42:54to discuss. Did you see Reflection of You No
- 1:42:59with Gohan Chung on Netflix? OK, so that's also talking about
- 1:43:06you're. Just getting more and more
- 1:43:08disappointed in me. That's OK.
- 1:43:11No, it's OK. It's OK.
- 1:43:14It's talking about consent and affair and power dynamics.
- 1:43:21So you have this lady. You seem to really like that
- 1:43:25like combo. You know what?
- 1:43:27Give me a trunk. Give me a love me.
- 1:43:30Give me a reflection of you. I I love that.
- 1:43:34Yeah, that's my jam. Because I think I have.
- 1:43:40I think it has a good balance of mahjong and intensity and
- 1:43:47emotions and sexiness. And I, I end up asking myself,
- 1:43:52morally, Carol, is this right? Should you be doing this?
- 1:43:57Uh huh. Right.
- 1:43:58And then I sit there. And argue with.
- 1:44:01Myself, as you said, I'm soft sometimes.
- 1:44:05I'm going to say I'm soft on. Do you know someone DM me and
- 1:44:10was like you should make that AT shirt Carol soft.
- 1:44:17Like a photo of Humbin and made in Korea.
- 1:44:19Yeah, soft. On Crime, Carol.
- 1:44:24Anyway there's this attraction and the issue is he shows up and
- 1:44:30he has a girlfriend. So during their affair he had a
- 1:44:35girlfriend so he ran off with this old lady too.
- 1:44:39And so the girlfriend remembers everything and has been
- 1:44:43manipulating the both of them throughout the whole story and
- 1:44:47threatening the woman. And he's like I'm not trusting
- 1:44:53my girlfriend. I feel like my girlfriend is up
- 1:44:55to something. Girl, you like those
- 1:44:57psychosexual thrillers. You like a psychosexual
- 1:45:01thriller, and there's nothing wrong with that.
- 1:45:03But you got it. You got to call it what it is,
- 1:45:07OK. It had us by the chokehold.
- 1:45:10Is that a romance? I don't know.
- 1:45:13It wasn't. It wasn't.
- 1:45:14Girl. OK, I'll stop.
- 1:45:17I know this is starting to veer into like convicting territory
- 1:45:23with us. So we're going to we're going to
- 1:45:26wrap it up. Thank you, Carol.
- 1:45:29We're talking about grown romances, romances that are have
- 1:45:34a lot of agency that are maybe a little sexy, that are not cookie
- 1:45:39cutter and have a lot of complexity to them.
- 1:45:43And we love a lot of them. There's so many that I haven't
- 1:45:46seen and I'm sure there's so many that people would love to
- 1:45:50see after getting all of these recommendations from us and
- 1:45:53chatting through various dramas, whether they were good or bad.
- 1:45:56So, Carol, where can people find you online?
- 1:46:00You can find me on Instagram as K Dramas Musings and I have a
- 1:46:05sub stack also called K Drama Musings so you can join me on
- 1:46:11there too. Thank you so much for having me,
- 1:46:13Jess. Thank you so much for joining me
- 1:46:15on this sojourn, this more adult romance journey.
- 1:46:22That's it. That's been our show.
- 1:46:25I'm Jessica and this has been the Tabaki Rebels podcast.
