- 0:06Speaker 1: The O's today brutal loss in Rogers Center at Toronto.
- 0:10Speaker 1: Back to back losses which kind of derailed some momentum.
- 0:14Speaker 1: They really had rolling chants for their first back to
- 0:17Speaker 1: back winning roads series this year, chance for their first
- 0:20Speaker 1: winning road trip, and it all evaporated in an emotional
- 0:24Speaker 1: five run bottom of the sixth. Today they lose six
- 0:26Speaker 1: to Ford of the Blue Jays, Steve tim and Brad
- 0:28Speaker 1: Here another addition to Birdland territory. Not as festive as
- 0:32Speaker 1: it was going to be about an hour or two
- 0:34Speaker 1: ago when things suddenly turned guys. Let's start with the
- 0:37Speaker 1: non call on the runner that appeared to all of
- 0:42Speaker 1: Baltimore to be out of the baseline and all of
- 0:44Speaker 1: Toronto to not be out of the baseline. But that's
- 0:47Speaker 1: what I saw. He ran much too far off the path.
- 0:52Speaker 1: Gunner could not reach out to tag him, got the
- 0:54Speaker 1: only out he could at first would have ended the
- 0:57Speaker 1: inning four to one. Four more runs scored after that, well,
- 1:00Speaker 1: four to two when they got the second out, when
- 1:04Speaker 1: that play actually a run scored on that play. Let
- 1:07Speaker 1: me try to keep all the mess straight from today.
- 1:10Speaker 1: Let's start with you, Brad, what did you see on
- 1:12Speaker 1: that play?
- 1:13Speaker 2: With you yeah.
- 1:14Speaker 3: To me, I mean, it looked like he was at
- 1:16Speaker 3: the baseline, just optics of it. And then when they
- 1:18Speaker 3: did the replay, I felt like it showed it even
- 1:21Speaker 3: more clearly.
- 1:21Speaker 2: Because the rural.
- 1:22Speaker 3: States somewhere in there, the runner doesn't have to establish
- 1:26Speaker 3: his path until an attempt of a tag is made.
- 1:29Speaker 3: There's no definition of an attempt of attag. I thought
- 1:32Speaker 3: Gunnar Henderson reached his arm out to me that it
- 1:35Speaker 3: dictates an attempt at the tag and Clement went at
- 1:38Speaker 3: least three, maybe almost six feet out of the way
- 1:40Speaker 3: to get out of the way. And it just to me,
- 1:42Speaker 3: it seemed, like I said, in real time, it seemed
- 1:47Speaker 3: like it was at like he was out of the baseline.
- 1:49Speaker 3: And then as I went and did the replay, it
- 1:51Speaker 3: looked even worse to me. But it's just unfortunate because
- 1:53Speaker 3: it just unraveled so fast after that. It's I felt
- 1:56Speaker 3: like the emotions kind of just ran rampant there and
- 1:58Speaker 3: it can happen in Toronto.
- 2:00Speaker 2: But to me, he definitely looked out of the baseline.
- 2:03Speaker 4: Brad, That's what I wanted to ask you about, because
- 2:05Speaker 4: Shane Boz was rolling heading into that inning and once
- 2:10Speaker 4: that miss call happened. He wasn't the same. You could
- 2:15Speaker 4: tell that maybe he was dwelling on that a lot.
- 2:18Speaker 4: Obviously he was chirping.
- 2:19Speaker 5: The ump was right now, you know, to make the call,
- 2:23Speaker 5: and it was clearly Clement was out of the base path.
- 2:27Speaker 4: But brat, how difficult is that? You know where he
- 2:32Speaker 4: gets screwed on a call. But you got to collect
- 2:34Speaker 4: yourself and still finish the inning.
- 2:36Speaker 2: Yeah, it's tough, and it's funny. I was thinking.
- 2:38Speaker 3: I was thinking that exact thing before we started the show,
- 2:40Speaker 3: because I was going to bring it up even if
- 2:42Speaker 3: you didn't ask me, because it is really tough. When
- 2:44Speaker 3: you're out there, things are speeding up. You finally get
- 2:46Speaker 3: the ground ball, you get the pitch that you're trying
- 2:48Speaker 3: to make, and you get what you think is the
- 2:50Speaker 3: double play, but the umpires don't see it that way,
- 2:52Speaker 3: and there's no way to replay it. There's no way
- 2:54Speaker 3: to you know, get them to kind of converse about it.
- 2:57Speaker 3: It was just they didn't call it. So it's it's
- 3:00Speaker 3: really tough at that point to kind of collect your emotions.
- 3:02Speaker 3: But that's I mean, you just have to do it somehow, somebody.
- 3:06Speaker 3: You have to just go out there and make another
- 3:07Speaker 3: big pitch, and unfortunately they weren't able to in that
- 3:10Speaker 3: inning and it kind of cost them the game there.
- 3:11Speaker 3: It's just things are happening so fast.
- 3:14Speaker 2: You know, it's a big gain.
- 3:15Speaker 3: They're both tied in the standings at that point, and
- 3:17Speaker 3: you know where they're kind of right there in the
- 3:19Speaker 3: wildcard together and it might come down to these two
- 3:21Speaker 3: teams for that final wild card spot. So you know
- 3:23Speaker 3: how big that pitch is to get to execute, you
- 3:27Speaker 3: get the result you're expecting, and to not have the
- 3:29Speaker 3: umpire seat that way, it just kind of gets really
- 3:31Speaker 3: frustrating and things kind of just run rampant there real fast,
- 3:34Speaker 3: and that was a perfect example of just not being
- 3:36Speaker 3: able to take that extra breath, and that kind of
- 3:38Speaker 3: comes with experience. Like Shane Bozzi has the service time,
- 3:41Speaker 3: but he doesn't have the amount of starts and innings
- 3:43Speaker 3: that most pitchers do, you know, with the amount of
- 3:46Speaker 3: service time that he has right now, So it just
- 3:48Speaker 3: kind of comes with experience. And the guys who've been
- 3:51Speaker 3: around a long time, they know how to, you know,
- 3:52Speaker 3: calm themselves back down, get level headed, and go out
- 3:55Speaker 3: there and extcute pitches after that and just Unfortunately they
- 3:58Speaker 3: weren't able to do that there in that that any.
- 4:02Speaker 1: So here is the rule I'm reading from. You know,
- 4:05Speaker 1: you can access about a million different versions of the
- 4:07Speaker 1: baseball rolls online, hopefully the one I have his accurate here,
- 4:12Speaker 1: Roll five h nine. It's one of many subsets of
- 4:16Speaker 1: that role. It says a runner is out when he
- 4:18Speaker 1: runs more than three feet away from his base path
- 4:21Speaker 1: to avoid being tagged, unless his action is to avoid
- 4:25Speaker 1: interference with a fielder fielding about a ball. A runner's
- 4:28Speaker 1: base pass path is established when the tag attempt occurs
- 4:34Speaker 1: and is a straight line from the runner to the base.
- 4:38Speaker 1: He is attempting to reach base safely. So that's a
- 4:42Speaker 1: little wordy, but certainly there was. He was not avoiding
- 4:45Speaker 1: a fielder there except to avoid the out in that sense,
- 4:50Speaker 1: and so he veered so far off the base when
- 4:52Speaker 1: they showed that down the line shot that in the
- 4:56Speaker 1: ninth Jackson Holiday was out of the base line. But
- 4:58Speaker 1: this guy was to and that's so frustrating in birdland.
- 5:02Speaker 1: But like you guys touched on. It's oriole and umpire
- 5:05Speaker 1: aided the four to one if they get out of
- 5:08Speaker 1: that inning with that call. But you still had they
- 5:10Speaker 1: had three run scoring hits after two were out, because
- 5:14Speaker 1: that was the second out of the inning be out
- 5:16Speaker 1: at first base. So there's the frustration, I think in
- 5:19Speaker 1: Birdland and in the clubhouse especially, is that we still
- 5:23Speaker 1: could have overcome that.
- 5:25Speaker 3: Yeah, And once again, it's kind of the theme of
- 5:26Speaker 3: the season at this point, Like we've talked about a
- 5:28Speaker 3: bunch all with two outs, and it just kind of
- 5:31Speaker 3: seems to be when everything happens is all with two outs,
- 5:34Speaker 3: and it's just it's just that third out has been
- 5:36Speaker 3: such a bugaboo the entire season on the defensive side.
- 5:40Speaker 2: And you can even look back to Henderson.
- 5:43Speaker 3: Sorry, Henderson had the chance to end the inning on
- 5:45Speaker 3: the ground ball, so that would have been the third
- 5:46Speaker 3: out of the inning.
- 5:47Speaker 2: He throws the first.
- 5:48Speaker 3: The game's four to one at that point still, and
- 5:50Speaker 3: when you look at Vasa's box scoes it's only one
- 5:54Speaker 3: to run. So it's just it just continues to be
- 5:57Speaker 3: frustrating because it seems to be one play that just
- 5:59Speaker 3: kind of leads to these bigger innings and these these
- 6:02Speaker 3: things that just come back to haunt them, and it's
- 6:04Speaker 3: kind of where they're at in the standings right now.
- 6:06Speaker 3: Four games under five hundred, and it just kind of
- 6:08Speaker 3: seems to be the two outs.
- 6:09Speaker 2: Same thing with.
- 6:10Speaker 3: Yesterday with Bradish four runs were scored on two outs
- 6:13Speaker 3: there against him, and it's just kind of that one thing.
- 6:16Speaker 3: It's just getting that final out to get you back
- 6:17Speaker 3: in the dugout just really seems to plague this team
- 6:20Speaker 3: here still in June.
- 6:23Speaker 5: It's one of these situations, guys, where two things can
- 6:26Speaker 5: be true.
- 6:27Speaker 2: Right.
- 6:27Speaker 4: The umpire totally messed up the call and that changed
- 6:31Speaker 4: the trajectory of this game.
- 6:33Speaker 5: But the Orioles didn't do their part. You know, you gotta.
- 6:36Speaker 4: Flush it and you got to move on, and that
- 6:38Speaker 4: can't continue to weigh on you like I feel like
- 6:41Speaker 4: it did with Shane Bose And you know you mentioned
- 6:44Speaker 4: the Gunner Henderson error and even you know, following that inning, guys,
- 6:49Speaker 4: they didn't score any more runs.
- 6:50Speaker 5: They had the four run inning, which was great.
- 6:52Speaker 4: Gosman was dealing until he wasn't, but the offense didn't
- 6:57Speaker 4: do enough.
- 6:57Speaker 5: So you know, the umpire missed the.
- 7:00Speaker 4: Call, but the Orioles you got to just bounce back
- 7:03Speaker 4: and find a way to win, and they didn't today.
- 7:07Speaker 1: Nope, they didn't, and so very frustrating loss sends the
- 7:11Speaker 1: Oils home at thirty one and thirty five and a
- 7:14Speaker 1: three and three road trip is still a lot of
- 7:16Speaker 1: winning ways. But they had won five of six through
- 7:19Speaker 1: Friday nights, and now that's five of eight, and they
- 7:22Speaker 1: had won fourteen of twenty four. Now that's fourteen of
- 7:24Speaker 1: twenty six, so a little you know, it took a
- 7:27Speaker 1: bit of hit here these last two games. Hey, we

- 9:08Speaker 1: So late in the game, Samuel Bissio has pinch hit
- 9:11Speaker 1: for He has really had some ups and downs here
- 9:14Speaker 1: recently within a physical nature. He had an abdominal situation
- 9:19Speaker 1: that took him out of the game Friday night, he
- 9:21Speaker 1: pinched hit Saturday. That was great to see, and he
- 9:24Speaker 1: started to catch her today. That was great to see.
- 9:27Speaker 1: Then he had that tag play where it looked like
- 9:30Speaker 1: his left hand or wrist was very sore. That came
- 9:32Speaker 1: out and checked on him. He stayed in the game.
- 9:35Speaker 1: Later they pinch hit for him. It seemed like maybe
- 9:39Speaker 1: there was something physical going on. When we heard and
- 9:42Speaker 1: watched on Massive the postgame interview with Craig Albernas, it
- 9:46Speaker 1: didn't sound like that. I'm trying to interpret his quote.
- 9:50Speaker 1: It's hard to do here. We're just a few minutes
- 9:52Speaker 1: after we actually heard it. You guys or saw it,
- 9:56Speaker 1: talked about, you know, have to play through some physical issues.
- 10:02Speaker 1: Sam has to learn to play through some adversity. Right now,
- 10:05Speaker 1: it seemed to me rad that that was not a
- 10:09Speaker 1: pinch hit because of something physical. Again, we don't have
- 10:12Speaker 1: all the information right now. We're speculating a little bit here,
- 10:17Speaker 1: but it didn't seem like it was about his wrist.
- 10:21Speaker 3: Yeah, and it's it's an odd quote. It's a weird
- 10:24Speaker 3: I guess we need more context. I'm sure there will
- 10:26Speaker 3: be more questions asked about it tomorrow or the next day,
- 10:29Speaker 3: but it's.
- 10:30Speaker 2: He to me would look like he was hurt.
- 10:33Speaker 3: Every sing he took today seemed to have a grimace,
- 10:35Speaker 3: and it just seemed kind of off. He seemed to
- 10:38Speaker 3: be attacking super early at pitches that were way out
- 10:41Speaker 3: of the zone, and it just kind of seemed like
- 10:43Speaker 3: he just wasn't feeling one hundred percent today. And that's
- 10:46Speaker 3: that's kind of life in the big leagues. You have
- 10:48Speaker 3: to learn how to play not being one hundred percent.
- 10:50Speaker 3: But I don't know, to me, it just kind of
- 10:52Speaker 3: seemed like there was something more there then. Maybe was
- 10:55Speaker 3: they were leading onto or I just don't know. It
- 10:58Speaker 3: just didn't seem like he was physically one hundred percent today,
- 11:02Speaker 3: And like I said, that's part of the big league life.
- 11:03Speaker 3: You're not going to be one hundred percent every day.
- 11:05Speaker 3: As soon as spring training ends. There's always something that
- 11:08Speaker 3: creeps up here or there. But after that abdominal thing,
- 11:11Speaker 3: those are always just a little bit weird. I know
- 11:12Speaker 3: they did test and everything like that, but those kind
- 11:15Speaker 3: of things just seem to linger, and I don't know,
- 11:17Speaker 3: maybe it popped up today or something, but to me,
- 11:19Speaker 3: just watching that game, it just didn't seem like he
- 11:21Speaker 3: was he was fully capable out there.
- 11:24Speaker 5: I'm with you, man, like you could tell that he
- 11:26Speaker 5: was hurt. I mean, anytime they would do those close ups.
- 11:30Speaker 4: He there was one instance where I know Ryan Ripken
- 11:33Speaker 4: brought it up on the broadcast where he was running
- 11:34Speaker 4: down first.
- 11:35Speaker 5: Base and he just he didn't seem right.
- 11:37Speaker 4: And when that tag situation happened at home plate, it
- 11:41Speaker 4: looked like he was seriously hurt. I mean, just you
- 11:43Speaker 4: could tell how much pain he was in, and thankfully
- 11:47Speaker 4: he stayed in the game at that point.
- 11:49Speaker 5: But definitely an interesting quote. I haven't seen the video yet.
- 11:53Speaker 4: We were talking about it prior to taping, but Sam's
- 11:57Speaker 4: just been such an impactful place for the Orioles this
- 12:02Speaker 4: season and it seems like a little bizarre to I
- 12:06Speaker 4: don't know if calling him out is what Craig Albernas did.
- 12:10Speaker 4: But and you're right, Brad, like, I get what you're saying.
- 12:13Speaker 4: When you play a one hundred and sixty two game season,
- 12:15Speaker 4: none of these guys are one hundred percent healthy, We
- 12:17Speaker 4: get it. But the abdominal oblique here like that is
- 12:22Speaker 4: always a tricky injury for a batter. Ask Gadley Ruchman Man,
- 12:27Speaker 4: he hurt both of his obliques last year. It totally
- 12:29Speaker 4: wrecked his twenty twenty five season. So you just hope
- 12:33Speaker 4: that Sam's okay.
- 12:36Speaker 1: Strange situation. Hard to know how to read into this.
- 12:39Speaker 1: It's not going to go away. It'll be brought up
- 12:41Speaker 1: in the pregame tomorrow, you know, when Albernas meets a
- 12:44Speaker 1: big throng of media back in Baltimore and all the
- 12:47Speaker 1: locals will be there that weren't there, couldn't be in Toronto,
- 12:51Speaker 1: and so we could not see the on deck circle,
- 12:55Speaker 1: but the reporters there could and they were tweeting that
- 12:58Speaker 1: Pisio had gone on deck to hit, and then Taveras
- 13:01Speaker 1: Pinch hit for him. So to me, when I've seen
- 13:04Speaker 1: players come out of a game because something flared up,
- 13:07Speaker 1: they don't even make it to the on deck circle.
- 13:09Speaker 1: That decision has been made. He's not physically well enough
- 13:12Speaker 1: to hit. Here comes someone else for him. This guy
- 13:15Speaker 1: went on deck and then something happened after he went
- 13:19Speaker 1: on deck that the Orioles decided and Albert has to
- 13:22Speaker 1: make that move. So we're gonna need more information. I
- 13:25Speaker 1: think we discussed as much as we can without you know,
- 13:28Speaker 1: we don't want to be wrong. We don't want to
- 13:30Speaker 1: throw something out there. That is just off base. We
- 13:33Speaker 1: want to be fair at all parties here, but it
- 13:34Speaker 1: was a little strange viewing today, and I'm not quite
- 13:38Speaker 1: sure exactly what is going on with manager player there,
- 13:41Speaker 1: but we'll no more soon enough. Let's get to Shane Byes.
- 13:46Speaker 1: Let's get to the good parts. First, four straight quality
- 13:50Speaker 1: starts at game time two thirty three er in those games,
- 13:54Speaker 1: this guy's roll on strowing ninety seven, throwing a great
- 13:57Speaker 1: knuckle curve, and then he did it again until it
- 14:01Speaker 1: dramatically changed. Uh, does he just take the good parts
- 14:07Speaker 1: of this and say I got derailed by circumstances today
- 14:10Speaker 1: and I'm still rolling.
- 14:13Speaker 2: I think so.
- 14:13Speaker 3: I mean, I thought he looked he looked electric in
- 14:16Speaker 3: those first four or five innings, he looked great. But
- 14:18Speaker 3: then it was the only time he ran into any
- 14:20Speaker 3: kind of trouble really and got out of that gym,
- 14:23Speaker 3: and then got into the sixth inning, and then obviously
- 14:24Speaker 3: everything kind of just unraveled there with two outs.
- 14:27Speaker 2: It was really not.
- 14:28Speaker 3: Hard contact until the call by the umpire, and then
- 14:31Speaker 3: he had some balls hit pretty hard. But it's, uh, yeah,
- 14:34Speaker 3: I don't know, it's it's I think you just take
- 14:36Speaker 3: the positives from that he's been on such a good
- 14:38Speaker 3: stretch here, I think we're now seeing the picture they
- 14:40Speaker 3: expect to go out there every single time, which is
- 14:42Speaker 3: a great thing for the Orioles and for Orioles fans
- 14:45Speaker 3: because this is the picture they were hoping they were
- 14:47Speaker 3: going to get.
- 14:48Speaker 2: It just kind of things just kind of just didn't
- 14:51Speaker 2: go his way there in the sixth inning.
- 14:52Speaker 3: So I think you just really have to focus on
- 14:54Speaker 3: the positives and move on to next game and just
- 14:56Speaker 3: really keep yourself in that good mental headspace because you've
- 14:59Speaker 3: had five four or five really really good starts here lately,
- 15:02Speaker 3: and just keep that, keep that momentum going, and just
- 15:05Speaker 3: kind of keep it rolling into the end of June
- 15:07Speaker 3: here into July, because he looks really good and he
- 15:10Speaker 3: looks like a top in rotation guy.
- 15:13Speaker 4: Yeah, I haven't just chucked this up to a oddity
- 15:16Speaker 4: more than anything. Guys, where was rolling like the first
- 15:20Speaker 4: five innings shut out, And something that he's talked about
- 15:24Speaker 4: a lot recently is is being more pitch efficient where
- 15:27Speaker 4: he's trying to get you know, get through at bats
- 15:30Speaker 4: as quick as possible, and you saw that in the
- 15:32Speaker 4: third and fourth innings where he got through those two
- 15:36Speaker 4: on just twelve pitches. Guys, like there was a point
- 15:39Speaker 4: where he retired nine straight. We know the knuckle curve
- 15:42Speaker 4: has been a hammer for him, especially in this strong stretch.
- 15:45Speaker 4: That's been as big put away pitch. But Boz is
- 15:48Speaker 4: rolling like I just I think that miss call got
- 15:54Speaker 4: the best of him, and I think he was probably
- 15:56Speaker 4: a little too emotional at that time, and that's where
- 16:00Speaker 4: it's just kind of spiraled out of control for him.
- 16:03Speaker 2: Yeah, it's interesting, Brad.
- 16:05Speaker 1: Major League baseball players can practice a lot of things
- 16:07Speaker 1: they can't practice how you overcome a bad umpire's call
- 16:12Speaker 1: in the heat of the game, a lot of emotion,
- 16:14Speaker 1: forty thousand in the stands, everybody going crazy and your
- 16:18Speaker 1: emotions now went from zero to sixty and about a
- 16:21Speaker 1: second and a half. And how you handle that. I
- 16:23Speaker 1: think players who do have my admiration because again, it's
- 16:28Speaker 1: it doesn't happen like once a year, And how do
- 16:32Speaker 1: you prepare for that?
- 16:33Speaker 5: You can't.
- 16:34Speaker 3: Yeah, no, you definitely can't. And one of the best
- 16:36Speaker 3: I ever saw doing was there in Oday.
- 16:37Speaker 2: The guy.
- 16:38Speaker 3: Anytime he had adversity come his way, whether it was
- 16:40Speaker 3: an umpire, whether it was a fielding air, he just
- 16:44Speaker 3: had a way of slowing things down, and I know
- 16:46Speaker 3: now with the pitch clock, it's much more difficult to
- 16:48Speaker 3: do that, but he was so good at just being
- 16:50Speaker 3: able to take his time and almost turned into a
- 16:52Speaker 3: human ring away and we always joke to him about it,
- 16:55Speaker 3: but he was just so good at not getting caught
- 16:57Speaker 3: up in the moment and making his next pitch. And
- 16:59Speaker 3: that's all you can do as a pitcher. After the
- 17:01Speaker 3: ball leaves your hand, there's nothing you can control. And
- 17:04Speaker 3: I remember Alan Mills telling that all the time in
- 17:06Speaker 3: the ball telling us that all the time in the bullpen.
- 17:08Speaker 2: He's like, the.
- 17:09Speaker 3: Only thing you can control is what's between your ears,
- 17:13Speaker 3: and after you release the ball there's not a single
- 17:15Speaker 3: thing you can control in that field. So it's all
- 17:18Speaker 3: about just being able to slow the game down the
- 17:20Speaker 3: best you can. And honestly, Shane Vais turns into a
- 17:23Speaker 3: reliever in that situation, and that was I feel like
- 17:26Speaker 3: always the hardest situations for starters is because you get
- 17:29Speaker 3: later later in the game, the game gets a little
- 17:31Speaker 3: bit tight, you get some runners on base, and now
- 17:33Speaker 3: it turns into a relief situation where everything's heightened. Every
- 17:37Speaker 3: pitch means so much and those are really the make
- 17:40Speaker 3: or break kind of situations for starters throughout the season,
- 17:42Speaker 3: And when you haven't experienced that.
- 17:44Speaker 2: It's hard to tell yourself to slow down.
- 17:46Speaker 3: It's hard to take the thoughts, the good thoughts, and
- 17:49Speaker 3: to be able to focus everything on the next pitch.
- 17:52Speaker 3: So hopefully next time, if something like this occurs, we
- 17:55Speaker 3: see a different shame Bos out there and he's able
- 17:57Speaker 3: to control himself. I don't think you'd be able to
- 17:59Speaker 3: see what was going on in his mind there, but
- 18:01Speaker 3: I think the results kind of dictated what was kind
- 18:04Speaker 3: of happening in his head. He is so cool and
- 18:06Speaker 3: calm on the mound. I almost want to see a
- 18:08Speaker 3: little bit more fire and a little bit more of
- 18:11Speaker 3: you know, ump out there. But he is so good
- 18:13Speaker 3: at just being so even keel while he's out there.
- 18:15Speaker 3: But I'm sure things were racing really fast in his
- 18:17Speaker 3: mind and he wishes he could probably have those two
- 18:19Speaker 3: pitches back. After that that instance happened.
- 18:22Speaker 4: He was hot, man, I mean, pull him from that
- 18:26Speaker 4: game and he's staring down the umpire.
- 18:28Speaker 5: I've never seen him that.
- 18:30Speaker 4: Hot like he was, But Brad like more along the
- 18:34Speaker 4: lines of what you're saying, and you could really say
- 18:38Speaker 4: this for any sport. You gotta have a quick, you know,
- 18:41Speaker 4: short memory, right, Like you're just next batter, next batter.
- 18:45Speaker 5: You give up a home run, you give up a
- 18:46Speaker 5: couple of runs early on in the game.
- 18:48Speaker 4: You got to find a way to settle in and
- 18:50Speaker 4: not let that continue to hover over you.
- 18:53Speaker 5: You know, you're just next batter, next batter.
- 18:56Speaker 3: I feel like, yeah, and it's I've heard it said
- 18:58Speaker 3: before that like a life of a pitcher is every
- 19:01Speaker 3: twenty five seconds you make adjustments on the fly. Twenty
- 19:04Speaker 3: five seconds you have to readjust what you're thinking, what
- 19:06Speaker 3: pitch you're gonna throw. So everything is quick adjustments. But
- 19:10Speaker 3: you get to a certain point in your career where
- 19:12Speaker 3: you learn to.
- 19:13Speaker 2: Be able to slow down all that.
- 19:15Speaker 3: Somehow, some way, you find a way, whether it's you
- 19:17Speaker 3: look in the dugout, you look at your glove, you
- 19:19Speaker 3: look at your hat, you have some kind of like
- 19:21Speaker 3: focal point that you put all these fast thoughts and
- 19:24Speaker 3: fast thinkings in your thoughts you have in your head,
- 19:28Speaker 3: and you're able to just kind of slow down in
- 19:30Speaker 3: that twenty five seconds somehow turns into more like fifty
- 19:33Speaker 3: seconds in your thinking, and it's just it's really really hard.
- 19:36Speaker 3: It's one of those things when you're in the minor leagues,
- 19:38Speaker 3: you don't experience it, but when you're in a stadium
- 19:40Speaker 3: like Toronto, it is packed all weekend.
- 19:41Speaker 2: You have fans getting loud after that play. I'm sure
- 19:44Speaker 2: that fans are.
- 19:45Speaker 3: Egging you on even more because they probably know the
- 19:47Speaker 3: umpire missed the call too, so they're kind of feeding
- 19:49Speaker 3: to the fire.
- 19:50Speaker 2: And it's just all those things happen really fast, and.
- 19:52Speaker 3: It just takes time to learn how to experience that
- 19:55Speaker 3: and kind of flush it and just move on. It's
- 19:58Speaker 3: a lot easier said than done. And even when you
- 20:00Speaker 3: get to the point we were able to, you still
- 20:02Speaker 3: find yourself in those situations where the game speeds up
- 20:04Speaker 3: on you and you go back after the game, you
- 20:05Speaker 3: sit there and just kick yourself because you know you
- 20:08Speaker 3: were one pitch.
- 20:08Speaker 2: Away from getting out of that.
- 20:10Speaker 3: And I think that's going to be the most frustrating
- 20:12Speaker 3: part to get over for not just him but the team.
- 20:15Speaker 2: After today, Birdland Territory with you.
- 20:19Speaker 1: After the O's lose the series finale in Toronto, coming
- 20:22Speaker 1: home Monday night for a week long homestand we'll see
- 20:25Speaker 1: if Chris Bassett gets to make that start or Trey
- 20:28Speaker 1: Gibson gets recalled. Potentially, those are two options for Monday Night,
- 20:31Speaker 1: which the Oriols have listed officially as TBA guys. I
- 20:35Speaker 1: put that stat up a moment ago. The Orils, who
- 20:37Speaker 1: went eight and five in these last four series, which
- 20:40Speaker 1: we're all against the AL East. This crazy schedule now
- 20:44Speaker 1: they won't see the AL East until after the All
- 20:46Speaker 1: Star break after playing this series in Toronto, kind of crazy.
- 20:50Speaker 1: So the math says the Oorls are eleven and fifteen
- 20:52Speaker 1: in the division this year, and fans are going to
- 20:55Speaker 1: say that's not good enough, and they'll won't be wrong
- 20:57Speaker 1: about that, But it also says they were one and
- 21:01Speaker 1: six in the first two series. To me, they played
- 21:03Speaker 1: dramatically better in the East. They had to sweep in Tampa,
- 21:07Speaker 1: they came back and swept them. Had they won this
- 21:09Speaker 1: game today, they would have been able to say in
- 21:12Speaker 1: their last series against every Al East opponent they won it.
- 21:17Speaker 1: Because they won their last against the Yankees, the Rays
- 21:19Speaker 1: and the Red Sox and so close to making out
- 21:22Speaker 1: a four pet to me, that's a good sign. It's
- 21:25Speaker 1: telling me they've turned a corner in the division. These
- 21:28Speaker 1: teams are not outclassing them where once it looked like
- 21:31Speaker 1: they were and I think it's a good sign moving forward.
- 21:35Speaker 3: Yeah, I think, like we've mentioned on the show, this
- 21:37Speaker 3: is a completely different, better brand of baseball they've been
- 21:40Speaker 3: playing the last two three weeks. At this point, it's
- 21:42Speaker 3: a night and day difference of the team of I mean,
- 21:45Speaker 3: just look at the fielding aspect of everything, the way
- 21:47Speaker 3: they're fielding the ball, the way they're you know, the
- 21:50Speaker 3: starting pitching has turned, the way the offense has kind
- 21:52Speaker 3: of gone on to a second year, the lineup has
- 21:55Speaker 3: gotten extended. I feel like one through nine now where
- 21:57Speaker 3: we were really focused on the top half of the lineup.
- 22:00Speaker 3: But to me, it's funny because before these this road
- 22:02Speaker 3: trip happened, we set a three and three would be
- 22:04Speaker 3: a success, but when you get off to a four
- 22:06Speaker 3: to one start, you feel like you left something on
- 22:09Speaker 3: the table. And that was always the frustrating part as
- 22:11Speaker 3: a player for me, because it's like you leave for
- 22:14Speaker 3: a road trip and you're like, okay, we take three
- 22:15Speaker 3: for three and three, But when you get off to
- 22:17Speaker 3: a four to one start and you leave those two
- 22:19Speaker 3: games on the table, it just has a different taste
- 22:21Speaker 3: in your mouth, especially as you're leaving Toronto, you're going
- 22:24Speaker 3: back home, and you feel like you really kind of
- 22:25Speaker 3: gave the game away today. Four and two is a
- 22:28Speaker 3: way better sounding.
- 22:29Speaker 2: Than three and three.
- 22:30Speaker 3: It's just, it's all it's part of the mental kind
- 22:33Speaker 3: of game that's played throughout a one six to two
- 22:35Speaker 3: game season. But yeah, it's just it's frustrating when you
- 22:38Speaker 3: start off four and one and playing so well and
- 22:40Speaker 3: you kind of let these last two games slip through
- 22:42Speaker 3: your hands.
- 22:44Speaker 4: This has been a much better stretch for this club,
- 22:46Speaker 4: and obviously that eleven fifteen record, Steve I just kind
- 22:51Speaker 4: of chalk that up to a big reason that they
- 22:54Speaker 4: were zero and seven in the series in the Bronx
- 22:57Speaker 4: and the Trop and those were really really ugly and
- 23:00Speaker 4: they were big low points for this team.
- 23:02Speaker 5: But ever since they came back from the trop you know,
- 23:05Speaker 5: May twenty second, it's just a lot of their bugaboos.
- 23:09Speaker 4: And issues that we've been talking about a lot on
- 23:12Speaker 4: the show. You know, I was bringing up these stats
- 23:15Speaker 4: on Friday on the Fan, just looking run scored in
- 23:19Speaker 4: the first three innings of ballgames heading into Friday.
- 23:22Speaker 5: It was second most in this spam.
- 23:24Speaker 4: Remember that they were always playing from behind and the
- 23:26Speaker 4: starting pitching being much better, so you're allowing a lot
- 23:30Speaker 4: less runs in the first three innings, you're playing with
- 23:32Speaker 4: more of a lead. And I think something that's also
- 23:35Speaker 4: been really cool to see, especially in this stretch, guys
- 23:39Speaker 4: small ball, and it didn't end up working out today,
- 23:43Speaker 4: Blaze Alexander not really getting enough on that bunt the
- 23:47Speaker 4: sacrifice to get O'Neill over. But we've seen Leoti, Taveres,
- 23:52Speaker 4: Blaze Alexander, guys that can lay one down and also
- 23:56Speaker 4: just sackflies. I mean, the Orioles sees the long like.
- 24:00Speaker 4: They rank so much better in both of those areas
- 24:04Speaker 4: year over year. The Orioles all last year had four
- 24:07Speaker 4: sacrifice bumps in one hundred and sixty two game to
- 24:12Speaker 4: Realty Taveres week for rede six I think already this season,
- 24:17Speaker 4: so that has been an added dynamic that this offense
- 24:21Speaker 4: was lacking last year.
- 24:24Speaker 1: Hey, I hope all our fans on Birdland Territory will
- 24:26Speaker 1: check me out on my substack. Let's get in a
- 24:28Speaker 1: plug for that. Steve on Baseball dot substack dot com
- 24:32Speaker 1: daily coverage of the Orioles the Miners. There's a podcast there,
- 24:37Speaker 1: chat room there. We do the game block there. We
- 24:39Speaker 1: got a lot going on, so check me out on
- 24:41Speaker 1: the Steveland Baseball substack and we got a few final
- 24:45Speaker 1: thoughts coming your way on this edition of Birdland Territory.
- 24:50Speaker 7: Big Bad Morning Show, Finny and Haney Inside Access Live
- 24:55Speaker 7: on YouTube weekdays six till six, search Faultimore one five seven,
- 25:00Speaker 7: Subscribe for daily shorts right to your phone and never
- 25:03Speaker 7: missed what you missed five seven.
- 25:05Speaker 1: The fan, You know, we're just talking about Sack Bunch
- 25:10Speaker 1: and small ball, and that is a favorite of Oriol fans.
- 25:12Speaker 1: They love to see small ball move runners ninety feet,
- 25:17Speaker 1: hit behind the runner, do things that win ball games.
- 25:20Speaker 1: And it's not as maybe as cool as that, but
- 25:23Speaker 1: maybe it is. I don't know. Homers are pretty cool too.
- 25:26Speaker 1: The Oils have been hitting a lot more guys. They've
- 25:28Speaker 1: homered in seventeen of the last twenty one games, thirty
- 25:31Speaker 1: three home runs twelve times in those twenty one games
- 25:35Speaker 1: if it two or more, including today, Taylor Ward ended
- 25:38Speaker 1: a sixteen game homerless run and during which he was
- 25:42Speaker 1: slugging just two fifty four. And Colton Kowser had one
- 25:45Speaker 1: homer his first forty one games and now has five
- 25:48Speaker 1: in his last fifteen. Hopefully both will keep swinging it.
- 25:52Speaker 1: We've talked extensively about Ward here. I'm not sure what
- 25:55Speaker 1: to make of the power, whether it's going to be
- 25:57Speaker 1: there or not, but it was for one swing today.
- 26:00Speaker 3: Yeah, he got his pitch and didn't miss it. So
- 26:02Speaker 3: that was a good sign to see that. He hung
- 26:04Speaker 3: a godsman, hung a splitter and he hit it out,
- 26:07Speaker 3: which is what he's kind of done the last couple
- 26:10Speaker 3: of years. He hit some homers and it's very homer
- 26:12Speaker 3: friendly stadiums that he's playing here in the al so
- 26:15Speaker 3: hopefully see more power from there. And to me, Colon
- 26:18Speaker 3: Kwiser has just been really encouraging. I want to see
- 26:20Speaker 3: this guy in the lineup every day. I've said it
- 26:22Speaker 3: multiple times. I just want to see him face lefties.
- 26:25Speaker 3: I know he struggled mightily, but the only way to
- 26:27Speaker 3: get him better against lefties is to face them. And
- 26:30Speaker 3: to me, he's a power different He's a difference maker
- 26:34Speaker 3: when he's making contact, and right now I starts seeing
- 26:37Speaker 3: him recognize change ups way better, which is a pitch
- 26:41Speaker 3: he really has struggled on and even breaking balls, not
- 26:45Speaker 3: necessarily hitting home runs off of them. Today he get
- 26:47Speaker 3: one off off speed pitch. But to me, it's the
- 26:49Speaker 3: recognition of maybe laying off those pitches as opposed to
- 26:52Speaker 3: getting after them and trying to do something with them.
- 26:55Speaker 3: So to me, his plate recognition has been way better.
- 26:57Speaker 3: And Taylor word, hopefully, you know, find something with this swing.
- 27:01Speaker 3: With power hitters, you never know, they can get a hot,
- 27:03Speaker 3: hot week, hot, two weeks, and next thing you know,
- 27:05Speaker 3: he'll have six homers, just like Colton's done the last
- 27:07Speaker 3: couple of weeks. So for him, that was a great
- 27:09Speaker 3: swing and a good sign. And hopefully you can kind
- 27:11Speaker 3: of extend this after they go home. Here the weather
- 27:13Speaker 3: is getting warmer. As fans know, a canme yards it
- 27:16Speaker 3: becomes a launching pad, So that's a good sign that
- 27:18Speaker 3: these homers are starting to go out and hopefully we
- 27:20Speaker 3: see some more on this Homestand.
- 27:22Speaker 4: Yeah, it really has been such a bizarre season for
- 27:26Speaker 4: Taylor Ward. Right, It's not as if he's having a
- 27:29Speaker 4: bad season at all.
- 27:30Speaker 5: That's not the case.
- 27:31Speaker 4: It's just looked so much different than we thought it
- 27:34Speaker 4: would be, you know, coming off the hitting over thirty
- 27:37Speaker 4: home runs, driving in over one hundred runs, so you're
- 27:40Speaker 4: hoping that he can start to get hot in the
- 27:43Speaker 4: month of June, because a lot of this offense is
- 27:46Speaker 4: really getting hot. You know, Pete with another opposite field
- 27:50Speaker 4: home run over the weekend, Kobe Mayo had the big
- 27:52Speaker 4: blast on Friday, Coldon Cowser has really been hot. Like
- 27:57Speaker 4: a lot of this lineup is really trend in the
- 28:00Speaker 4: right direction, and you just hope that more people join.
- 28:03Speaker 4: And Gunner Henderson he had the three hit game over
- 28:06Speaker 4: the weekend as well. June is traditionally his best month
- 28:10Speaker 4: of his season, so hopefully he can have a red
- 28:13Speaker 4: hot June this year.
- 28:15Speaker 1: You never know what players are dealing with, and we
- 28:17Speaker 1: often don't find out till the season's over. Gunnar Henderson
- 28:21Speaker 1: hit thirty. It's seventeen home runs, twenty less last year
- 28:24Speaker 1: than the year before. Shoulder related we found out in
- 28:27Speaker 1: The Winner. I mean, Taylor Ward had that hand issue
- 28:30Speaker 1: and maybe that zapped him from power, but not from playing,
- 28:35Speaker 1: and he continued to get on base, draw walks, hit
- 28:38Speaker 1: doubles and do things to help them win if homers
- 28:41Speaker 1: didn't come with it. So maybe we'll find out at
- 28:44Speaker 1: some point that for a month or two this guy's
- 28:47Speaker 1: power was apt, but he could still be on the field.
- 28:50Speaker 1: He plays almost every day, so I give him credit
- 28:52Speaker 1: for that part he is contributing to wins. Let's talk
- 28:55Speaker 1: quickly about the homestand Seattle for four, San Diego for
- 28:59Speaker 1: three than a long West coast road trip, so the
- 29:02Speaker 1: Ale East is done for a while. The Orioles guys
- 29:05Speaker 1: have to step on the gas six thirty Monday night.
- 29:09Speaker 1: What flush this two days? Make sure that this doesn't
- 29:13Speaker 1: derail what has been a nice run of winning baseball.
- 29:16Speaker 2: Yeah, and they're gonna have their hands full. The Mariners team.
- 29:18Speaker 2: They have amazing starting pitching.
- 29:20Speaker 3: They have five guys that they run out there that
- 29:22Speaker 3: are Any team would give anything to have one of
- 29:24Speaker 3: those guys, but they have five of them.
- 29:26Speaker 2: So it's gonna be a true test.
- 29:27Speaker 3: And speaking of Taylor Ward, he's gonna get to face
- 29:30Speaker 3: the team He faced a bunch and it's been tough.
- 29:32Speaker 3: I think it's tough when you switch divisions, guys you
- 29:34Speaker 3: don't see a lot. But now he's gonna get seven
- 29:36Speaker 3: games in the next ten here against pitchers he used
- 29:38Speaker 3: to see all the time, So hopefully he can kind
- 29:41Speaker 3: of continue against he pitchers he's more familiar against. But
- 29:44Speaker 3: it's gonna be no small task. The potters and the
- 29:46Speaker 3: Manitors both can pitch, and it's gonna be a tough
- 29:49Speaker 3: home stand, but they're playing better baseball, which is what
- 29:51Speaker 3: you want to see. And hopefully they can just scratch
- 29:53Speaker 3: some runs together. Starting pitching keeps doing what it does,
- 29:56Speaker 3: and you know, just keep keep the winning momentum. Going
- 29:59Speaker 3: three and three on the let's have a winning homestand
- 30:02Speaker 3: and kind of go from there and see where they're
- 30:03Speaker 3: at after this Homestand.
- 30:05Speaker 5: Yeah, it's gonna be tough opponents.
- 30:07Speaker 4: But look, when we were talking heading into this road trip,
- 30:10Speaker 4: you'll take three and three, and we said that in
- 30:12Speaker 4: large part because this has been a much different team
- 30:16Speaker 4: at home compared to on the road.
- 30:18Speaker 5: And now you're coming back home.
- 30:20Speaker 4: Last time they were home, they had the seven and
- 30:22Speaker 4: three homestand, and if this team ends up going on
- 30:25Speaker 4: a run, we're gonna look back, look back to that
- 30:28Speaker 4: home stand. So let the good times roll a Camden Yards,
- 30:32Speaker 4: you know.
- 30:32Speaker 1: Yeah, oh yeah, seven and three last time they were there.
- 30:37Speaker 1: So hopefully they have a good home stand starting Monday night,
- 30:40Speaker 1: the Mariners in town, then the Padres. The Oils are
- 30:43Speaker 1: playing every day this week Monday through Sunday, before they're
- 30:46Speaker 1: off before one day before they head to the West
- 30:49Speaker 1: coast see Seattle again. All right, guys, enjoyed it and
- 30:53Speaker 1: we'll see you in a day or two with our
- 30:55Speaker 1: next edition. Thanks to the fans for checking in, and
- 30:58Speaker 1: please subscribe when you can on the tour YouTube show
- 31:00Speaker 1: Birdland Territory and we'll see you next time.
