- 0:00Speaker 1: What a big weekend coming up, not only for the
- 0:03Speaker 1: Texas log Worns, but for other athletic pursuits on the
- 0:09Speaker 1: UT campus and outside of that, pro sports, college sports,
- 0:12Speaker 1: whatever the situation might be.
- 0:14Speaker 2: And we're glad to have you with us this afternoon.
- 0:16Speaker 1: Good afternoon, and welcome to the program here on Sports
- 0:19Speaker 1: Radio AM thirteen hundred of the Zone.
- 0:20Speaker 2: My name is Craig Way.
- 0:21Speaker 1: Glad to have you with us as we bring you
- 0:23Speaker 1: the program this afternoon from UFCU dish fog field. Kind
- 0:28Speaker 1: of quiet right now on the fields. Some early field
- 0:32Speaker 1: prep is being done, but the team will be out
- 0:35Speaker 1: in about an hour to begin it's warm ups. It
- 0:37Speaker 1: is a seven o'clock first pitch tonight for Texas against
- 0:41Speaker 1: the Auburn Tigers, Number one in the country, is number
- 0:43Speaker 1: eight in the country. The Auburn is ranked as high
- 0:45Speaker 1: as number six and one of the polls, but in
- 0:48Speaker 1: D one baseball dot com, which is usually recognized as
- 0:52Speaker 1: the as the most pre eminent of the collegiate polls,
- 0:57Speaker 1: Auburn is number eight. Texas is number one. Another top
- 1:00Speaker 1: ten matchup in the SEC. What else is new? You'll
- 1:03Speaker 1: be able to hear it this evening on one o
- 1:05Speaker 1: three point one FM, Austin sad station, our sister station
- 1:08Speaker 1: one oh three point one FM. You can also listen
- 1:12Speaker 1: to it on the Texas Longhorns app and also you
- 1:16Speaker 1: can connect to it via the iHeartRadio app. So baseball
- 1:20Speaker 1: here tonight across the street from us getting underway in
- 1:25Speaker 1: two and a half hours. Texas Softball which fell from
- 1:28Speaker 1: the number one spot, which fell from the top of
- 1:32Speaker 1: the SEC standings, which are pretty tightly bunched after dropping
- 1:35Speaker 1: two of three at home to Tennessee last weekend, and
- 1:39Speaker 1: Texas at number three will host LSU a three game
- 1:43Speaker 1: weekend Thursday, Friday, Saturday Easter weekend series at Red and
- 1:49Speaker 1: Charlie Macombs Field and that gets underway at four thirty
- 1:53Speaker 1: this afternoon. You can listen to Andrew Haynes with a
- 1:56Speaker 1: call on that on the Texas Longcorns app as well.
- 2:03Speaker 1: Our producer who is in the studio I know he'd
- 2:06Speaker 1: probably rather be out at the ballpark where it's sunny
- 2:08Speaker 1: and warm, is Cameron D.
- 2:10Speaker 3: Parker.
- 2:11Speaker 1: The D on the birth certificate stands for Dallas. That's
- 2:14Speaker 1: his middle name, as in being named for the NFL
- 2:18Speaker 1: team that he doesn't care to follow right now, even
- 2:21Speaker 1: though it's his favorite team because he's upset with what
- 2:24Speaker 1: they did, He's probably happy with what they did with
- 2:26Speaker 1: the one day contract to bring Tyron Smith in to
- 2:31Speaker 1: retire as a Cowboy?
- 2:33Speaker 2: Am I right about that? Cam?
- 2:34Speaker 3: Oh? For sure?
- 2:35Speaker 4: I mean Tyron Smith should be a first ballot Hall
- 2:38Speaker 4: of Famer that serves a spot in the Cowboys Ring
- 2:41Speaker 4: of Honor, Hall of Honor, whatever it's called. So awesome
- 2:45Speaker 4: to see Tyron Smith come back. He never should have
- 2:47Speaker 4: even left for the Jets in my opinion, but glad
- 2:50Speaker 4: to have him back. And good afternoon in La. I'll
- 2:52Speaker 4: be at the ballpark after our show in So.
- 2:54Speaker 5: You're coming out, coming out? Excellent, excellent? You need a
- 2:58Speaker 5: parking pass, I think always? All right, I got you
- 3:01Speaker 5: an extra one. Yep, yep, yep, yep, I've got one.
- 3:04Speaker 5: I'll send it to you.
- 3:05Speaker 2: So good.
- 3:05Speaker 1: I'm glad, all right, I'm glad you're coming out. The
- 3:11Speaker 1: other thing was say is the D could also stand
- 3:13Speaker 1: for Dallas, as in the Mavericks, as in how about
- 3:17Speaker 1: that ten seed looking like higher than a ten seed
- 3:20Speaker 1: and blasting the Sacramento Kings last night in the plane? Okay, yeah,
- 3:25Speaker 1: I know, it's only the play in and they got
- 3:27Speaker 1: to go to Memphis and try to win. In the
- 3:29Speaker 1: reward for that if they win, that is to get
- 3:32Speaker 1: fed to Cameron's favorite team, the Oklahoma City Thunder in
- 3:36Speaker 1: the first round. But at least they'd be in the
- 3:38Speaker 1: field of sixteen if they were to pull off that win.
- 3:42Speaker 1: But how impressive was that Dallas Mavericks win to you
- 3:45Speaker 1: last night?
- 3:46Speaker 4: Camp, Yeah, it seemed that the Sacramento Kings are ready
- 3:49Speaker 4: for can Kun is what I got from watching that
- 3:52Speaker 4: game last night.
- 3:54Speaker 3: The Kings have just I mean, it's funny thing about that.
- 3:56Speaker 4: A few years ago they were the three seed in
- 3:57Speaker 4: the Western Conference with the bonus, and here they are
- 4:01Speaker 4: an early exit. But hey, you know, all the crap
- 4:03Speaker 4: that we've given Nico Harrison, and we've given Patrick Dumont
- 4:07Speaker 4: and Rich Welts and Jason Kidd, the entire team for
- 4:09Speaker 4: Luca Trade brightly deserved. The players on this team. They
- 4:13Speaker 4: play hard. And you could say, well, of course they're
- 4:15Speaker 4: gonna play hard. They're an NBA team. Why wouldn't they
- 4:17Speaker 4: play hard, But you can kind of tell that Klay Thompson,
- 4:20Speaker 4: Anthony Davis, you know, they take all of this stuff
- 4:23Speaker 4: a little bit more personal.
- 4:24Speaker 3: Than I think a lot of people understand. So we'll
- 4:28Speaker 3: see what happens.
- 4:28Speaker 4: I believe they play with Memphis tomorrow night, and Memphis
- 4:32Speaker 4: they might be a one two three can coon team
- 4:34Speaker 4: as well, so I would not be surprised if it
- 4:36Speaker 4: is Dallas, Okay see in the first round.
- 4:39Speaker 1: It'd be interesting if it does turn out that way,
- 4:42Speaker 1: if it wants up being the Mavericks against the Thunder.
- 4:47Speaker 1: If it turns out that way, however, impressive to see
- 4:51Speaker 1: what Klay Thompson did last night, a guy who had
- 4:55Speaker 1: had what was it the nightmare game there in the
- 4:58Speaker 1: play in last year for Golden State, and was what
- 5:02Speaker 1: the zero for ten from three point range?
- 5:04Speaker 2: That was just a miserable night. And the Kings won
- 5:07Speaker 2: that game.
- 5:08Speaker 1: And uh and and he said something I believe the
- 5:12Speaker 1: Scott Van pell And Sports Center right after after the
- 5:15Speaker 1: game abouts good. He said something like exercise the demons
- 5:20Speaker 1: or the ghosts or whatever like that. But when he
- 5:22Speaker 1: shoots like that, and when they can rebound the way
- 5:25Speaker 1: they do, and we know they try hard on defense.
- 5:28Speaker 1: When they do those things, they give themselves a chance
- 5:32Speaker 1: to win.
- 5:33Speaker 3: They definitely do.
- 5:34Speaker 4: Craig, and you know, I think the Warriors actually was
- 5:36Speaker 4: Steph Curry until they beat the Grizzlies. They were Steph
- 5:38Speaker 4: was winless in the playing game, which is crazy to
- 5:41Speaker 4: think about considering there's an NBA Championship sandwiched in there.
- 5:45Speaker 4: But you know, it's nice to see Clay exercise his
- 5:48Speaker 4: demons when he's hot.
- 5:50Speaker 3: He is absolutely hot.
- 5:51Speaker 4: And you know they're a team that if they can
- 5:53Speaker 4: get by Memphis, you know they can steal a game
- 5:55Speaker 4: or two against Okay. See, but again, you know it's
- 5:58Speaker 4: a team without Kyrie Irving, which it's you know, super
- 6:01Speaker 4: unfortunate that the playoffs will be Kyrie Irving less. But
- 6:05Speaker 4: with with Gafford and in a dy you know, they're
- 6:08Speaker 4: a formidable, a formidable front court and uh.
- 6:12Speaker 3: They might they might give Memphis some trouble. We'll see it.
- 6:14Speaker 4: It'll be uh a battle of Jaron Jackson and Zach
- 6:18Speaker 4: Edie against Gafford and lively Anthony Davis. So it actually
- 6:21Speaker 4: should be suiting up to be a real, real fun
- 6:24Speaker 4: playing game tomorrow night.
- 6:26Speaker 2: Yeah. Uh, you know. The the other thing that.
- 6:31Speaker 1: Really strikes me about this is, uh, we we get
- 6:37Speaker 1: you know, like you said, when when Anthony Davis is
- 6:40Speaker 1: playing really really well, uh and uh, and and then
- 6:44Speaker 1: gafford able to help inside and then obviously getting uh
- 6:50Speaker 1: the outside shooting from Clay Thompson. It makes a big difference.
- 6:55Speaker 1: How about Brandon Williams last night, Uh, Brandon Williams for
- 7:02Speaker 1: the Mavericks and the job that he did A guy
- 7:04Speaker 1: didn't didn't. He go through a couple of ten day
- 7:06Speaker 1: deals before the Mavericks added him to the regular roster,
- 7:09Speaker 1: and and and he hit some big time shots for
- 7:11Speaker 1: him last night.
- 7:12Speaker 4: He's been playing in the G leagues the past now
- 7:14Speaker 4: two three years, an undrafted player out of Arizona. You know,
- 7:18Speaker 4: he's had a pretty interesting story. You know, I think
- 7:20Speaker 4: he played a lot uh in the G League for
- 7:23Speaker 4: the Knicks, for the Magic as well. And here he is,
- 7:26Speaker 4: you know, in the play in getting his shot and delivering.
- 7:29Speaker 4: So it's a it's a real, real fun story. And
- 7:32Speaker 4: you know, again this is you know, courtesy of you know,
- 7:35Speaker 4: Kyrie Irving not being available and Jason Kidd turning to
- 7:39Speaker 4: the bench. But what a what a nice find for
- 7:42Speaker 4: for Jason Kidd. And you know, I don't want to
- 7:44Speaker 4: give Anico Harrison too much credit, but you know, hey,
- 7:47Speaker 4: he's he played excellent and could be a huge X
- 7:50Speaker 4: factor tomorrow night.
- 7:51Speaker 1: Well, here's where I stand about this, and people know
- 7:54Speaker 1: how I feel. I'm I'm not any different than any
- 7:56Speaker 1: other Mavericks fan who feels that, uh, you know that
- 8:01Speaker 1: that you know, Nico Harrison did did a horrible thing
- 8:05Speaker 1: with the trade. It was a bad trade. It's still even.
- 8:08Speaker 1: And that's nothing against Anthony Davis. He'll give us them things,
- 8:11Speaker 1: but on all accounts across the board in terms of
- 8:15Speaker 1: the production, the superstar talent and uh and and and
- 8:21Speaker 1: then obviously the popularity of of Luca uh and how
- 8:26Speaker 1: it's driven fans away. Like like my wife she was,
- 8:30Speaker 1: she grew up in Dallas and as a died in
- 8:32Speaker 1: a wool Mavericks fan was until this happened now and
- 8:35Speaker 1: she's following Luca and the Lakers closely right now. She
- 8:38Speaker 1: she feels as disenfranchised as many Mavericks fancies. So, uh,
- 8:42Speaker 1: I don't want anybody anybody mistaking what I'm about to
- 8:46Speaker 1: say for how I feel about Nico Harrison and Patrick
- 8:50Speaker 1: Dumont and the and the Mavericks family in the whole bed,
- 8:52Speaker 1: I don't want anybody to mistake how I feel about that.
- 8:55Speaker 1: I think I'm standing right with everybody else. The only
- 8:58Speaker 1: thing that I will add is it is only fair
- 9:01Speaker 1: and right to if he made some deals, and he
- 9:06Speaker 1: did with the trades he made last year, to give
- 9:10Speaker 1: him some credit for that, and to get a guy
- 9:13Speaker 1: like Brandon Williams on the roster, Like you said, don't
- 9:15Speaker 1: want to give him too much credit, but you give
- 9:17Speaker 1: him credit where credits due on that deal. Now, is
- 9:20Speaker 1: that enough to overcome the horrific mistake of the trade
- 9:24Speaker 1: that he'd been of course not.
- 9:26Speaker 2: And it's bad.
- 9:28Speaker 1: And I'm as disenfranchised a Mavericks fan as anybody else.
- 9:34Speaker 1: Like I said, their expansiencies. In nineteen eighty eighty one,
- 9:37Speaker 1: I was in college and I sold merchandise for them,
- 9:40Speaker 1: worked at Reunion Arena, and that helped put me through college.
- 9:44Speaker 1: I became a big Mavericks fan then it had been
- 9:46Speaker 1: ever since. I just think of the interest of fairness
- 9:49Speaker 1: if a guy did make a couple of nice movies, Yeah,
- 9:52Speaker 1: you recognize that. At the same time also recognizing and
- 9:56Speaker 1: continuing as we all do, as Mavericks fans do, to
- 10:01Speaker 1: feel completely torn asunder by the Luka Doncis trade A
- 10:06Speaker 1: that number one first and foremost, and then b Nico
- 10:11Speaker 1: Harrison doubling down on all of it. Like we talked
- 10:14Speaker 1: about the other day when he had that whatever you
- 10:16Speaker 1: want to call it, clandestine off the record news conference
- 10:20Speaker 1: or what it wasn't off the record, but you couldn't
- 10:23Speaker 1: record it. There were no cameras and no recording devices
- 10:27Speaker 1: in there when he did it, which is a cowardly move.
- 10:31Speaker 3: Uh.
- 10:31Speaker 2: And that's and that's.
- 10:32Speaker 1: Dodging civic and media responsibility as a as a front
- 10:39Speaker 1: office man. And I'm I'm very adamant when I when
- 10:43Speaker 1: when I point that out. So uh that so number one, Yeah,
- 10:48Speaker 1: the trade itself stands on its own destructive merit for
- 10:53Speaker 1: what it did. And then b for them taking the approach,
- 10:56Speaker 1: the we really don't care about the fans approach for
- 10:59Speaker 1: him to say, I don't work for the fans, to
- 11:01Speaker 1: work for the Mavericks, and the comments that he has made,
- 11:04Speaker 1: the comments, the few that have come out, and the
- 11:08Speaker 1: actions that they had at first ejecting fans from the
- 11:11Speaker 1: stands who are chanting fire and Nico or wearing the
- 11:14Speaker 1: T shirts, you know, that sort of thing, and then
- 11:16Speaker 1: they realize what a public or relations disaster that was,
- 11:21Speaker 1: so you know, kind of peeling back walking that back
- 11:25Speaker 1: of bits, but still a mess, and it's a mess
- 11:29Speaker 1: that won't be cleaned up ever. I don't think as
- 11:31Speaker 1: long as this group is in here, it would have
- 11:33Speaker 1: to take something along the lines of them some in
- 11:38Speaker 1: some miracle way in a year or two or whatever,
- 11:40Speaker 1: bringing him back and then winning a world title to
- 11:42Speaker 1: even erase some of the stain that we know that's
- 11:44Speaker 1: not going to happen, So this is probably never going
- 11:48Speaker 1: to be erased off of that. But you give credit
- 11:52Speaker 1: to the team for playing as hard as they did
- 11:55Speaker 1: and finding as hard as they did on the road
- 11:58Speaker 1: to win the game in sacramentolast night. Now, to be
- 12:01Speaker 1: fair to your point, Cameron, and to what I think
- 12:03Speaker 1: Stephen A. Smith pointed out others, Sacramento looked like they
- 12:08Speaker 1: didn't care and didn't want to play anymore. They did
- 12:10Speaker 1: make one run. I think they get it down to
- 12:12Speaker 1: sixteen in the third and then in the fourth quarter,
- 12:16Speaker 1: but the Mavericks had every answer after that, and even
- 12:20Speaker 1: though they wound up winning by fourteen, they were in command.
- 12:23Speaker 1: They were leading by over twenty with about two minutes
- 12:25Speaker 1: to go, and then kind of emptied the bench. The
- 12:29Speaker 1: players played very hard. They play hard for Jason Kidd,
- 12:32Speaker 1: We know that, and I think they'll play hard tomorrow
- 12:36Speaker 1: night in Memphis.
- 12:37Speaker 2: Now, I don't know that they're going to win. It's
- 12:40Speaker 2: going to be difficult.
- 12:40Speaker 1: They're flying across the country today and they'll get into
- 12:45Speaker 1: practice probably a workout later today, and then they'll they'll
- 12:49Speaker 1: play the game tomorrow night if they win, just to
- 12:52Speaker 1: get in the field of sixteen, to get in that
- 12:56Speaker 1: first round against you know, obviously the the heavy heavy
- 13:01Speaker 1: favorite Oklahoma City, is quite an accomplishment given everything they
- 13:07Speaker 1: have been through this year, not only with the Luca trade,
- 13:10Speaker 1: but also losing Kyrie Irving and others to injuries, Irving
- 13:15Speaker 1: obviously through probably the end of next year or at
- 13:17Speaker 1: least until the latter part of next season, and then
- 13:20Speaker 1: losing other guys as well. So tip of the hat
- 13:23Speaker 1: of the Mavericks for fighting hard and getting that win
- 13:25Speaker 1: last night. All right, up next, we're gonna hear from
- 13:28Speaker 1: long Orange Head coach Jim Slasniegel talking about this baseball series.
- 13:32Speaker 2: It's weird.
- 13:33Speaker 1: I wasn't there yesterday for the media availability, and I
- 13:38Speaker 1: think I was told Cameron, you dived into it to
- 13:40Speaker 1: edit all the sound. Was there not one question asked
- 13:44Speaker 1: about Auburn, not one. It was all about the team
- 13:48Speaker 1: and how they're playing and things like that. But we'll
- 13:51Speaker 1: hear him discuss that. Obviously, the condition of Ethan Inndos's
- 13:56Speaker 1: concern since he's been banged up and we don't know
- 13:59Speaker 1: he's gonna be day to day.
- 14:00Speaker 2: And we'll see where it is with him going forward.
- 14:03Speaker 1: But we're gonna hear from Schlats we do have inconceivable
- 14:07Speaker 1: this hour. Next hour we'll hear from Max Grubbs of
- 14:12Speaker 1: the Long Worn Pitching Staff, and we will also next
- 14:19Speaker 1: hour we'll go through some of that as well, and
- 14:23Speaker 1: we'll hear more from Jim Schlasnagle coming up in the
- 14:26Speaker 1: four o'clock hour as well. So a lot to get
- 14:30Speaker 1: to here on the program this afternoon as we continue
- 14:32Speaker 1: from u FCU Dish falk Field on thirteen under the Zone.
- 14:43Speaker 6: It's The craig Way Show with the voice of the
- 14:46Speaker 6: Texas Longhorns in Hall of Fame Broadcasting Craig Way on a.
- 14:53Speaker 1: Warm, breezy Thursday afternoon. It's a Thursday, Friday, Saturday. He's
- 15:00Speaker 1: for Texas and Auburn here on this Easter weekends. Eighty
- 15:03Speaker 1: five degrees right now, and it's going to colm a
- 15:06Speaker 1: couple more degrees Hi tomorrow will be around ninety. But
- 15:10Speaker 1: then on Saturday, which is a noon first pitch, they
- 15:14Speaker 1: had a game time starts on that there will be
- 15:18Speaker 1: later in the day on Saturday a chance of range,
- 15:20Speaker 1: so it's probably a good thing that they're going to
- 15:21Speaker 1: play at noon on Saturday. They make changes to the
- 15:24Speaker 1: Friday and Saturday games not because of the threat and
- 15:27Speaker 1: thought about impending weather, but because of Auburn's travel situation,
- 15:33Speaker 1: and so it's seven o'clock to night as scheduled. Tomorrow
- 15:36Speaker 1: night was originally scheduled for seven, but now it is
- 15:41Speaker 1: going to be one hour earlier, six o'clock tomorrow evening
- 15:45Speaker 1: seven o'clock tonight, six o'clock tomorrow, and then on Sunda
- 15:49Speaker 1: on Saturday, when it was scheduled for two.
- 15:50Speaker 3: It will be high noon noon on Saturday.
- 15:54Speaker 1: And of course you'll be able to hear the games
- 15:56Speaker 1: on your iHeartRadio app you connect to it on the
- 16:00Speaker 1: Texas Long WRNS app and then over the year on
- 16:03Speaker 1: one of three point one FM tonight and tomorrow night,
- 16:05Speaker 1: Saturday's game here on AM thirteen hunderd the Zone, and
- 16:09Speaker 1: again on the apps as well, all right, let's hear
- 16:12Speaker 1: from long WRNS head coach Jim Slastnangle this from the
- 16:14Speaker 1: media available to yesterday and talking to setting up this
- 16:18Speaker 1: series and really kind of the state of the team,
- 16:20Speaker 1: because the questions that came to Sloss were about the
- 16:24Speaker 1: current state of the team and not so much about
- 16:26Speaker 1: the series against Auburn. But here are Slastnangles opening comments.
- 16:31Speaker 7: Has pitched in a while, so that was a very
- 16:33Speaker 7: big highlight for Texas. And looking forward to the weekend, Auburn's
- 16:38Speaker 7: got a great team, short week, which is good.
- 16:42Speaker 8: I don't think anybody should play on Easter, but.
- 16:45Speaker 7: We're having some jumbled game times due to different events
- 16:49Speaker 7: on campus and Auburn's flight schedule for Saturday, so.
- 16:54Speaker 8: I've got to be ready for that.
- 16:55Speaker 7: But we've the way things have gone on the road
- 16:57Speaker 7: for us, with long games or doubleheaders and early morning
- 17:00Speaker 7: games in Kentucky, we should be well prepared for it.
- 17:03Speaker 1: Okay, all right, So now the questions for coach slashtego
- 17:07Speaker 1: as this team has moved forward to now thirty and five.
- 17:14Speaker 1: The question came about the growth, the growth, the success,
- 17:19Speaker 1: and yes, the confidence and how it feeds off one another.
- 17:23Speaker 1: So he was asked, how has he seen this team's
- 17:26Speaker 1: confidence grow.
- 17:28Speaker 7: Yeah, I mean I think, you know, it's like chicken
- 17:30Speaker 7: or the egg. You know, what comes first, doing it
- 17:33Speaker 7: or thinking you can do it right? Confidence or results?
- 17:36Speaker 7: Confidence or success. So I think it's probably a little
- 17:39Speaker 7: bit of both. You have to believe in yourself enough
- 17:41Speaker 7: that you're capable of doing it. But especially you know,
- 17:44Speaker 7: this year, there's a lot of unknowns for the program,
- 17:47Speaker 7: going into a new conference, playing in new places, playing
- 17:50Speaker 7: in new environments, and I think they've figured out quickly
- 17:53Speaker 7: that it's still just it's still baseball. And I think
- 17:57Speaker 7: the mental skills and the investment that we've put in
- 18:00Speaker 7: the mental game helps them with that, gives them tangible
- 18:03Speaker 7: tools to handle anything that comes their way. Certainly winning helps,
- 18:10Speaker 7: but we've come from behind. We've played in every scenario
- 18:13Speaker 7: you can play. We've had bad games, we've played poorly
- 18:17Speaker 7: and still won, and we've played well and lost. So,
- 18:21Speaker 7: you know, I think we still have half the conference
- 18:24Speaker 7: season left, So I'd love to think that it's going
- 18:28Speaker 7: to continue like the first half, but more than likely,
- 18:31Speaker 7: you know, we're going to have our ugly stretch or
- 18:33Speaker 7: ugly weekend, and that's when it will truly be tested.
- 18:36Speaker 2: All right.
- 18:37Speaker 1: So then a couple of questions about Dylan Balantis, who
- 18:40Speaker 1: has just been so strong, so sparkling, although obviously his
- 18:45Speaker 1: last having was when he gave up that game tying
- 18:47Speaker 1: home run in the bottom of the night to Kentucky
- 18:50Speaker 1: in that fifteen inning game on Saturday, when the long
- 18:53Speaker 1: Ones are up four to three. He was pitching on
- 18:54Speaker 1: back to back days, but in the case of that
- 18:57Speaker 1: home run, you know that that was something else. First
- 19:01Speaker 1: of all, though, the question about Volantis and his release
- 19:05Speaker 1: point and how he can do several different things with
- 19:08Speaker 1: his release and what makes Balanti's release.
- 19:11Speaker 7: So special, I think I think you know that It's
- 19:14Speaker 7: part of his deal is you know, release height.
- 19:16Speaker 8: So he's he's already tall, and.
- 19:18Speaker 7: He kind of throws extremely over the top, so it's
- 19:22Speaker 7: a different He's very unique in terms of those aspects.
- 19:27Speaker 7: Got great angle to his pitches, and then you don't
- 19:29Speaker 7: see that true overhand curveball as much anymore, and it's
- 19:33Speaker 7: more sliders or cutters in which he does throw those pitches.
- 19:36Speaker 7: But he got true overhand curveball and he can throw
- 19:38Speaker 7: for strikes, so you have to respect it. That's that's
- 19:41Speaker 7: that's the key, is he Even some of the better
- 19:44Speaker 7: hitters we face don't get great swings on him because
- 19:48Speaker 7: they have to respect the pitch. If it's if it's
- 19:50Speaker 7: a pitch that you can't throw for a strike, all hitters,
- 19:54Speaker 7: but especially the good hitters, are going to just spit
- 19:56Speaker 7: on it. And so you know, he throws endless strikes
- 19:59Speaker 7: and even when his fastball may be a little bit down,
- 20:02Speaker 7: he's still able to land the breaking ball, and that's
- 20:04Speaker 7: ultimately what I think gives them success.
- 20:07Speaker 1: Now, it was a fastball that Valantis three that was
- 20:11Speaker 1: hit for that game tying home run in the bottom
- 20:13Speaker 1: of the night the last time out there on Saturday.
- 20:16Speaker 1: So the question was schloss? Was that game tying home
- 20:18Speaker 1: run for Kentucky? Was that a good at bat? Was
- 20:21Speaker 1: it a bad pitch for Valanthis his analysis of it.
- 20:25Speaker 7: Yeah, Yeah, I mean I give yeah, give a guy credit.
- 20:28Speaker 7: I think he's got like a two thirty something about
- 20:31Speaker 7: an average, but he had like an over nine hundred and.
- 20:33Speaker 8: Fifty ops like he's got some power.
- 20:36Speaker 7: They have some guys in their team that haven't shown
- 20:38Speaker 7: it yet, and their ballpark plays pretty big like ours does.
- 20:42Speaker 7: But with film a three to two fastball. It was
- 20:44Speaker 7: a strike, it was down and he got to it.
- 20:46Speaker 7: So it's going to happen in the course of the season.
- 20:50Speaker 2: Those things do happen on occasion.
- 20:52Speaker 1: Now, after the game on Sunday, and I asked Schloss
- 20:58Speaker 1: about this the other day, the whole thing, he made
- 21:02Speaker 1: a comment to keep more than on the post game
- 21:04Speaker 1: about his team resembling He said, I don't know if
- 21:06Speaker 1: anybody other than you or I remembers the TV show
- 21:09Speaker 1: Mash Now. I obviously remember it being old enough, but
- 21:13Speaker 1: his reference to his team resembling a Mash unit, at
- 21:16Speaker 1: least in terms of the patients because of the wounded
- 21:19Speaker 1: nature that they have. Max Blue is out until who knows,
- 21:24Speaker 1: maybe on the tail end of the regular season, perhaps
- 21:27Speaker 1: more than likely in the postseason. Nobody knows right now,
- 21:30Speaker 1: and it depends on the rate of healing of that
- 21:32Speaker 1: broken thumb. So that's one thing. Then there's a couple
- 21:36Speaker 1: of pictures out injured. Then on top of that, you've
- 21:41Speaker 1: had the injuries that have happened over the past week
- 21:44Speaker 1: to ten days, and that includes and I guess it
- 21:49Speaker 1: would be two weeks coming into this weekend. With regard
- 21:53Speaker 1: to Adrian Rodriguez, who was injured in the Missouri series,
- 21:57Speaker 1: and it was that a deema uh on a right
- 22:01Speaker 1: at the hammate there right where the hand meets the
- 22:03Speaker 1: wrist uh and uh where that was a problem for
- 22:09Speaker 1: him and he had to get passed that. And still
- 22:12Speaker 1: is to the point where you know, he's a switch hitter,
- 22:14Speaker 1: but still is to the point where he's only able
- 22:16Speaker 1: to swing left handed. Right now he's unable to swing
- 22:19Speaker 1: right handed. He is, however, able to play in the field,
- 22:25Speaker 1: so he's played back at his regular position of third base.
- 22:29Speaker 2: He is played.
- 22:29Speaker 1: He played in left field one game in the Kentucky series.
- 22:34Speaker 1: He was at second base the other night against gut
- 22:37Speaker 1: r GV. And a question was asked of Jim Slastnegel yesterday.
- 22:42Speaker 1: Could a rodd as I like to call him, uh
- 22:45Speaker 1: play even in right field?
- 22:48Speaker 7: Definitely possibility. But with Mendoza out, you know, then it
- 22:51Speaker 7: presents a whole nother challenge. So we've got to figure out,
- 22:55Speaker 7: you know, what's the best who's playing, you know, what's
- 22:59Speaker 7: the best possible combination.
- 23:00Speaker 8: To give us the best chance to score.
- 23:02Speaker 7: But also, you know, play good defense, and sometimes that
- 23:06Speaker 7: means you might have to play defense early and take
- 23:09Speaker 7: your chance to see if you can get a lead,
- 23:11Speaker 7: and if you're not, then you got to play offense late.
- 23:13Speaker 7: Or maybe it's the opposite, you know, where we play
- 23:16Speaker 7: the best available bat or at least the best that
- 23:18Speaker 7: we have, maybe give up something from a defensive standpoint. Uh,
- 23:24Speaker 7: and then and then and then and then do something
- 23:26Speaker 7: differently later. But uh, Adrian, I mean, he's a baseball player.
- 23:29Speaker 7: Like he had a sliding catch against Kentucky, he made
- 23:32Speaker 7: a competitive throw on a play at home plate. So
- 23:36Speaker 7: it's it's funny how just our true baseball player can
- 23:39Speaker 7: really be put it anywhere on the field and do well.
- 23:41Speaker 8: I think Adrian's that.
- 23:42Speaker 1: Yeah, one one of those guys certainly does Okay, So
- 23:45Speaker 1: he said some of that depends on Mendoza situation. So
- 23:48Speaker 1: we mentioned obviously Ethan Mendoza a diving attempt in fact
- 23:53Speaker 1: knocked down the ball, kept it from getting into the
- 23:56Speaker 1: outfield in the finale on Sunday, but he landed on
- 24:00Speaker 1: a shoulder that it had some problems in the pass
- 24:03Speaker 1: going all the way back to high school and got up,
- 24:06Speaker 1: was able to finish the ball game, but was held
- 24:09Speaker 1: out of Tuesday's game, and that shoulder is still trying
- 24:14Speaker 1: to heal up, and the question is, you know, does
- 24:18Speaker 1: it affect him at the plate?
- 24:19Speaker 2: Will it affect him in the field.
- 24:20Speaker 1: In short, slastn aglast for an update the latest that
- 24:24Speaker 1: he had on Ethan Mendoza, It'll be.
- 24:26Speaker 9: Day to day.
- 24:27Speaker 7: Yeah, I haven't seen him yet today. I think he's
- 24:30Speaker 7: gonna try to take some dry swings today. I think
- 24:32Speaker 7: the hitting him hitting is will probably but yeah, it's
- 24:37Speaker 7: just going to be day to day and see how
- 24:39Speaker 7: it feels. And we also got to make sure he
- 24:40Speaker 7: doesn't re injure it, so we'll have to have to
- 24:43Speaker 7: just kind of wait and see him. He's he's certainly
- 24:45Speaker 7: tough and he's a he's a very bag baller player.
- 24:48Speaker 7: So if anybody can play through something, he gets him.
- 24:52Speaker 1: And he's been wanting to play as well. And the
- 24:55Speaker 1: indication is that he might be ready to swing and
- 24:57Speaker 1: could still swing as opposed to playing in the field
- 25:00Speaker 1: of being able to swing first, which would indicate that
- 25:03Speaker 1: maybe he might be available for d H duty.
- 25:05Speaker 3: But I don't know.
- 25:05Speaker 1: They'll assess that on a day by day basis and
- 25:10Speaker 1: we'll we'll try to find out here before we leave
- 25:12Speaker 1: their today. If there's an update on Mendoza, he's listed.
- 25:16Speaker 1: Remember that SEC Student Athlete Availability Report, the injury update.
- 25:20Speaker 2: You know, there was so much, so much bally hood.
- 25:23Speaker 1: Uh, you know, very very much ballelyhood with regard to football.
- 25:30Speaker 1: During the football season, there was an awful lot talked about, uh,
- 25:35Speaker 1: you know, who was available on a week by week
- 25:37Speaker 1: basis in football and also from time to time in basketball. Well,
- 25:41Speaker 1: that SEC Student Athlete Availability Report applies to all sports,
- 25:46Speaker 1: so you should know that Ethan Mendoza on today's injury
- 25:52Speaker 1: report actually was the one released yesterday evening has been
- 25:58Speaker 1: Thoza listed as probable. The only two guys on the
- 26:01Speaker 1: report of Max Blue, who of course is out, and Mendoza,
- 26:04Speaker 1: who is.
- 26:05Speaker 2: Listed as probable.
- 26:07Speaker 1: But there's one more report that comes out and it'll
- 26:12Speaker 1: be out two hours before game time, so that could
- 26:14Speaker 1: change one way or the other.
- 26:16Speaker 3: So we'll see, uh with regard to that.
- 26:18Speaker 1: And one other thing from Schlosnage before we take the break.
- 26:22Speaker 1: And you know, we we've mentioned it because it's a
- 26:26Speaker 1: fact and worth mentioning. This team is ranked number one
- 26:30Speaker 1: in the country. We know they're number one in the country,
- 26:33Speaker 1: so they're at the halfway mark of SEC play. Does
- 26:38Speaker 1: it really mean that much. And for that matter, Slas
- 26:41Speaker 1: was asked, does the team really talk much about being
- 26:44Speaker 1: in the top spot at number one?
- 26:46Speaker 8: Yeah, nothing, not at all. Don't even mention it. I
- 26:48Speaker 8: don't hear anybody talking about it.
- 26:50Speaker 7: I had one player ask me, coach, how many times
- 26:53Speaker 7: is one of your you know, one of our teams
- 26:56Speaker 7: been number one or whatever? And I was I was like, well,
- 27:00Speaker 7: I remember it happening, but it's never at the end
- 27:02Speaker 7: of the season, so it doesn't really matter. I've had
- 27:04Speaker 7: a couple of b preseason. One doesn't matter. So it's
- 27:07Speaker 7: it's nice for the programs. It's a snapshot in time
- 27:11Speaker 7: of what things look like.
- 27:14Speaker 8: But you know, I mean it's nice for recruiting.
- 27:18Speaker 7: Maybe gets you a little exposures things like that, but
- 27:21Speaker 7: I mean we're at Texas week we have plenty of exposures.
- 27:23Speaker 8: So but I don't think the players, you.
- 27:25Speaker 7: Know, they don't talk about it when we have a
- 27:27Speaker 7: bad weekend, and they shouldn't talk about it when we're playing.
- 27:30Speaker 9: Well.
- 27:31Speaker 1: Yeah, so there it is. That's where they are, even
- 27:34Speaker 1: even being ranked number one. All right, up next, we'll
- 27:37Speaker 1: have Inconceivable for this Thursday afternoon. We'll hear more from
- 27:40Speaker 1: Jim Slasnagle coming up in the four o'clock hour. We'll
- 27:43Speaker 1: hear from long Warm players on three o'clock hour. But
- 27:45Speaker 1: up next inconceivable for a Thursday afternoon on AM thirteen
- 27:49Speaker 1: under the Zone. Pregame start time is going to be
- 27:53Speaker 1: at six forty five. Again, the first pitch will be
- 27:56Speaker 1: at seven o'clock and you can hear that on one
- 27:59Speaker 1: oh three point one FM, Austin's eighty station. So we'll
- 28:03Speaker 1: we'll have that for you coming up tonight at six
- 28:09Speaker 1: forty five on one oh three point one FM. Tell
- 28:12Speaker 1: you what else we have coming up for you one
- 28:16Speaker 1: week from today. And if you're down with and into
- 28:26Speaker 1: the National Football League Draft, the NFL Selection Meeting I
- 28:29Speaker 1: think is the actual name for it.
- 28:33Speaker 10: And.
- 28:34Speaker 1: Uh, then then you can come to the right place
- 28:38Speaker 1: for it, and the right place will be at Twin
- 28:42Speaker 1: Peaks and Round Rock, uh, and it'll be next Thursday.
- 28:46Speaker 1: What are we going to all the way up to
- 28:48Speaker 1: is it a six fifty cam with the draft show
- 28:51Speaker 1: or is it two to six I'm trying to remember
- 28:53Speaker 1: with our draft show.
- 28:55Speaker 4: Next all the way up to two six fifty, So
- 28:56Speaker 4: the Roundrock Express are in action that night so unfortunately
- 28:59Speaker 4: we cannot cut over the start of the draft live
- 29:02Speaker 4: as we wish we could, So we're gonna be up
- 29:04Speaker 4: until about seven o'clock six p fifty ish at the
- 29:08Speaker 4: Twin Peaks and Round Rocks, so deathly come out and enjoy.
- 29:12Speaker 4: There's gonna be some some specials that include a course
- 29:14Speaker 4: of cold ice ice cold beer, and along with some
- 29:17Speaker 4: of other stuff. You could come out and say hi
- 29:19Speaker 4: to you, Craig, to me, Mark, Henry will be there,
- 29:22Speaker 4: my cards will be there, and we're working on some
- 29:24Speaker 4: special guests as well.
- 29:25Speaker 2: We did it last year. We had an awful lot
- 29:27Speaker 2: of fun and I know what you said.
- 29:28Speaker 1: You know, we step aside once the Express takeover at
- 29:31Speaker 1: six fifty for the broadcast. But what we do with
- 29:35Speaker 1: this program is to set the stage for you, to
- 29:38Speaker 1: set the table for you so that you know the draft,
- 29:43Speaker 1: analysis of the of the picture pics you may hear,
- 29:47Speaker 1: and then of course everybody can see and hear the
- 29:50Speaker 1: picks going on and Twin Peaks good place to watch
- 29:53Speaker 1: the draft. They've got on all those big screens. So
- 29:57Speaker 1: it should be a lot of fun next Thursday. And
- 30:01Speaker 1: for people who just dive head first into the draft,
- 30:05Speaker 1: it'll be a program worth tuning into, no question about it.
- 30:09Speaker 1: You're you're you're kind of big into the draft, aren't you.
- 30:11Speaker 4: You know, honestly, Craig with the Cowboys just demise, you know,
- 30:17Speaker 4: I you know, I used to be, you know, trying
- 30:20Speaker 4: to think of, you know, a mock draft, Marvin, you know, constantly,
- 30:24Speaker 4: you know, every mock draft that was coming out, you know,
- 30:27Speaker 4: reading it, rereading it. You know, whether it's Matt Miller
- 30:30Speaker 4: or you know, uh, Todd McShay or melk khyper Junior,
- 30:35Speaker 4: all those guys you know, constantly going through it, and
- 30:38Speaker 4: now less and less so. But of course, you know,
- 30:41Speaker 4: I am excited to see you know, where Jade Baron
- 30:43Speaker 4: ends up.
- 30:44Speaker 3: He's going to be a first round draft pick.
- 30:45Speaker 4: Calvin Banks of course, and then a lot of other Longhorns,
- 30:49Speaker 4: including you know, Isaiah Bond, Matthew Golden. You know, I mean,
- 30:52Speaker 4: Texas is going to set up program records for most
- 30:55Speaker 4: draft picks likely this season, which is very very exciting
- 30:58Speaker 4: and kind of tells you where you've sar Keshan in
- 31:00Speaker 4: this program?
- 31:01Speaker 2: Is that right now? Yeah? And I mean I never ignored.
- 31:10Speaker 1: The fact that when Texas had several first round draft picks.
- 31:19Speaker 1: I never you know, that it was a sign of
- 31:21Speaker 1: the upward mobility of the football program. I never, I
- 31:25Speaker 1: never dismissed that, But perhaps I didn't give it as
- 31:29Speaker 1: much credit, as much credence as as it might deserve.
- 31:34Speaker 1: Because the simple truth is this, if there are guys
- 31:39Speaker 1: being drafted, what was it, eleven guys last year? If
- 31:43Speaker 1: that were drafted eleven long words that went drafted last year.
- 31:46Speaker 1: If if there are players being drafted, student athletes being
- 31:51Speaker 1: drafted into the NFL to become NFL players from your program,
- 31:56Speaker 1: that means that as they entered the they enter the
- 32:01Speaker 1: draft having been properly prepared at the collegiate level, clearly
- 32:06Speaker 1: on their own and with their coaching. And if if
- 32:09Speaker 1: and this follows, if they have been properly prepared and
- 32:14Speaker 1: uh you know, did their own due diligence and their
- 32:16Speaker 1: own work and their own preparation leading up for it,
- 32:19Speaker 1: If they did do that, then that means it probably
- 32:23Speaker 1: benefited the program in terms of wins and losses. Now,
- 32:26Speaker 1: I know a lot of people said, you know, there
- 32:28Speaker 1: were programs that you know, they hadn't had many uh
- 32:32Speaker 1: you know, first round draft picks or second round draft picks,
- 32:35Speaker 1: and yet we're successful the collegiate level, and that is
- 32:37Speaker 1: certainly possible. It is, after all, the sum of the
- 32:40Speaker 1: parts and not any one or two specific guys. Listen,
- 32:44Speaker 1: we need only look at what's happened at Tennessee with
- 32:46Speaker 1: Nico Iomaliaba to see and to hear from Josh Haipel
- 32:51Speaker 1: that no one player is bigger than the program overall.
- 32:54Speaker 1: But if you have a collection, if you have a handful,
- 32:57Speaker 1: if you have a number of players who could wind
- 33:02Speaker 1: up being drafted, and even perhaps one or maybe two
- 33:05Speaker 1: that might go in the first round, if that happens,
- 33:09Speaker 1: then it's a reflection not only of the success of
- 33:13Speaker 1: the problem, but the success of the program in terms
- 33:15Speaker 1: of how it's being built and how it's being constructed.
- 33:19Speaker 1: And here's that sea word culture of it in all
- 33:22Speaker 1: of those things. And I think we've seen the living
- 33:25Speaker 1: proof of that here over these past couple of seasons
- 33:29Speaker 1: with what sark has done. After all, the long ORNs
- 33:31Speaker 1: in the last two years under Steve Sarkise center twenty
- 33:35Speaker 1: five and five, with two trips to the College Football Playoffs,
- 33:38Speaker 1: are the only program to make the program the playoff
- 33:42Speaker 1: in back to back years, and of course in the
- 33:45Speaker 1: Final four and back to back years.
- 33:47Speaker 2: But you know, I think that is a.
- 33:50Speaker 1: Step forward and a show with the progress there because
- 33:55Speaker 1: not just the media, but fans are looking for tangible
- 33:59Speaker 1: sign of how the pro how the program is trending upward.
- 34:05Speaker 1: They want to see tangible signs. Obviously, wins on the field,
- 34:11Speaker 1: contention for conference championships, UH, getting into the College Football Playoff,
- 34:17Speaker 1: getting into the Final four or New Year's Six Bowls
- 34:20Speaker 1: or whatever. Those those are all tangible outward signs of
- 34:27Speaker 1: the UH of the UH, you know, the the program's
- 34:33Speaker 1: upward mobility. And another one is number of players being drafted.
- 34:40Speaker 1: So eleven being drafted is it's a pretty cool deal.
- 34:45Speaker 11: UH.
- 34:45Speaker 1: Therefore UH last year for Texas and Sark said there
- 34:50Speaker 1: might be even more. You could see possibly even more
- 34:52Speaker 1: being drafted in this coming draft. So that's a really
- 34:55Speaker 1: cool thing to see with what's going on with UH.
- 34:59Speaker 2: With long worn football.
- 35:01Speaker 1: And again, we'll be out at Twin Peaks in Round Rock,
- 35:06Speaker 1: and it'll be a week from the day and it'll
- 35:10Speaker 1: be from two o'clock up till six fifty. So we'll
- 35:11Speaker 1: get you properly prepared for it as you come out.
- 35:15Speaker 1: So we'll look forward to seeing you out there at
- 35:17Speaker 1: twin Peaks of Round Rock. While I'm on the subject
- 35:19Speaker 1: of college football, I did want to bring this long.
- 35:22Speaker 1: It was announced today that Lee Corso is going to
- 35:25Speaker 1: retire from ESPN's College Game Day in August. Of course,
- 35:30Speaker 1: he began back at nineteen eighty seven, so nearly forty years.
- 35:33Speaker 1: He'll turn ninety on August seventh. And of course, you know,
- 35:37Speaker 1: everybody knows him for his picking of team win with
- 35:40Speaker 1: the head gear in the not so Fast my Friend,
- 35:42Speaker 1: when he disagreed with somebody on the panel as well. Incidentally,
- 35:48Speaker 1: in case you were wondering, he made his first headgear
- 35:51Speaker 1: pick in Columbus, Ohio back in October nineteen ninety five.
- 35:56Speaker 1: He's had four hundred and thirty elections and he has
- 36:03Speaker 1: gone to eighty six and one forty four uh in
- 36:09Speaker 1: those selections all time, to eighty six and one in
- 36:17Speaker 1: those picks. That's sixty six percent. Cam, that's two out
- 36:22Speaker 1: of three.
- 36:22Speaker 2: Not bad.
- 36:23Speaker 3: Good, it's pretty good. Yeah, yeah.
- 36:25Speaker 1: And and the story talked about how he's worn the helmets,
- 36:29Speaker 1: the mascot heads, the other hats. I liked him when
- 36:33Speaker 1: he when he would really stretch it out there like
- 36:35Speaker 1: when he dressed up as the Leprechaun from Notre Dame
- 36:38Speaker 1: or the tree from Stanford, when he dressed up like
- 36:42Speaker 1: James Madison or Benjamin Franklin. Remember when he got on
- 36:46Speaker 1: the motorcycle with the Oregon Duck mascot.
- 36:49Speaker 2: He's done that.
- 36:50Speaker 1: He once held a live baby alligator in his hands,
- 36:53Speaker 1: picking Florida to win, and then he and Katy Perry
- 36:59Speaker 1: were picking from the Girl at Ole Miss. So anyway,
- 37:02Speaker 1: and here's something else I didn't know about it. Now
- 37:03Speaker 1: I knew we'd seen him always have that pencil in
- 37:07Speaker 1: his hand. He always picked with a pencil, a number
- 37:10Speaker 1: two pencil. Okay, cool, I use I've got one in
- 37:13Speaker 1: my hand right now.
- 37:13Speaker 2: I picked.
- 37:14Speaker 1: I like the feel and the writing of the number
- 37:17Speaker 1: two pencil, plus the ability to erase. We like when
- 37:20Speaker 1: I score a baseball game. But the other reason for
- 37:24Speaker 1: that is I did not know this. He was the
- 37:27Speaker 1: director of business development for Dixon Tekwonder Roga, which makes
- 37:31Speaker 1: those famous yellow pencils.
- 37:33Speaker 2: Did you know that?
- 37:34Speaker 3: I did not know that.
- 37:34Speaker 2: I didn't know that either.
- 37:36Speaker 1: So anyway, his final broadcast will be on August thirtieth.
- 37:41Speaker 1: And you talk about something being I guess fitting because
- 37:49Speaker 1: the first time he made a selection was in Columbus.
- 37:54Speaker 1: Is there any doubt in anybody's mind that College Game
- 37:58Speaker 1: Day is going to be in Columbus for the actually
- 38:00Speaker 1: the Ohio State game on August thirty. I think everybody's
- 38:03Speaker 1: expecting that.
- 38:04Speaker 4: I think Craig, you know, Lee Corso, for a lot
- 38:07Speaker 4: of people like me who grew up, you know, watching
- 38:10Speaker 4: college game that's how you come to love the sport
- 38:13Speaker 4: and you come to love, uh, there's the pageantry of
- 38:15Speaker 4: college football. Because Lee Corso and Rhees Davis and Kirk
- 38:20Speaker 4: kurb Street and Desmond Fowler, I think have done always
- 38:24Speaker 4: a fantastic job of really telling the story of college football,
- 38:28Speaker 4: all the storylines, you know, traveling to different stadiums. As
- 38:32Speaker 4: a kid, you know, growing up in Charlotte, you know
- 38:34Speaker 4: I was gonna be able to go to the Big
- 38:36Speaker 4: House or the Horror Shoe, and you know even you
- 38:39Speaker 4: know dk R or out to the West Coast or
- 38:41Speaker 4: down to the south of the SEC school. So that's
- 38:44Speaker 4: how I got to know about the swamp and the
- 38:47Speaker 4: boot and you know, the rolls bawl stuff like that.
- 38:49Speaker 4: And it was the story the College Game Day that
- 38:52Speaker 4: told and a lot of it too was you know,
- 38:54Speaker 4: the head gear and lee corso. So you know, it's
- 38:56Speaker 4: sad to see him retire, but also it's been so
- 38:59Speaker 4: much fun to be able to to see him on
- 39:01Speaker 4: the set and see what the show has has become.
- 39:05Speaker 1: Absolutely all right. Coming up next, we're gonna hear from
- 39:08Speaker 1: Dylan Valantis, the Longhorns pitcher and the outstanding reliever that
- 39:15Speaker 1: he is and we are. Also we'll hear some more
- 39:19Speaker 1: from Jim Schlastnaego a little later. I'm gonna, like I
- 39:24Speaker 1: normally do here when we're at the ballpark, pop down
- 39:27Speaker 1: at one point during the program to have my pregame
- 39:31Speaker 1: conversation wi Schloss and we'll hear more from him coming up.
- 39:35Speaker 1: So we'll do all of those things coming up, and
- 39:38Speaker 1: we've got some other topics to get to as well.
- 39:41Speaker 1: It is a Thursday afternoon tonight seven o'clock six to
- 39:45Speaker 1: forty five pre game start time on one of three
- 39:47Speaker 1: point one FM. Tomorrow six o'clock. It was moved forward
- 39:51Speaker 1: one hour from seven o'clock to six o'clock six o'clock
- 39:54Speaker 1: with a five forty five pre game and a first
- 39:57Speaker 1: pitch at six o'clock on one of three.
- 39:59Speaker 3: Point one FM Saturday.
- 40:00Speaker 1: It is a noon first pitch and we'll be on
- 40:04Speaker 1: the air at eleven forty five Saturday morning with a
- 40:07Speaker 1: noon first pitch. And you heard that right here on
- 40:10Speaker 1: this single thirteen hunderd the Zone.
- 40:18Speaker 6: Welcome back to the Craig Way Show and the Voice
- 40:21Speaker 6: of the Longhorns. Craig Way, follow Craig on social media
- 40:25Speaker 6: and horn.
- 40:26Speaker 1: Voice that came in hot just then?
- 40:32Speaker 2: Was it like that automatically?
- 40:35Speaker 4: Man the volume and we're just rocking out here on
- 40:39Speaker 4: this Thursday.
- 40:40Speaker 2: I guess so, I guess so.
- 40:41Speaker 1: All right, this is gonna be a big series this
- 40:45Speaker 1: weekend and part of a big weekend in the SEC
- 40:49Speaker 1: on but two of the series are Thursday Friday Saturday.
- 40:55Speaker 2: Because of the Easter weekend.
- 40:56Speaker 1: There are two series that are set for Friday Saturday Sunday.
- 41:01Speaker 1: One of those is Kentucky at Tennessee and the other
- 41:05Speaker 1: one is Florida at Mississippi State. Those are those are
- 41:09Speaker 1: the other two series that'll be going on this weekend
- 41:15Speaker 1: on Friday Saturday Sunday. Everything else is Thursday Friday Saturday,
- 41:20Speaker 1: including Arkansas and Texas.
- 41:23Speaker 3: A and M.
- 41:24Speaker 1: A and M has been hot of late. That series
- 41:26Speaker 1: will be up in Fayetteville. So obviously we'll have an
- 41:30Speaker 1: eye on that, and we'll have an eye on a
- 41:34Speaker 1: lot of the things going on in college baseball and
- 41:38Speaker 1: in the SEC. And I would say also that we'll
- 41:46Speaker 1: keep an.
- 41:47Speaker 2: Ear and an eye during.
- 41:50Speaker 1: Especially you know, right when it starts, because we'll still
- 41:53Speaker 1: be on the air in the four o'clock hour. Texas
- 41:56Speaker 1: Softball has a crucial SEC series with lsu happening across
- 42:01Speaker 1: the street from US at Macombs Field.
- 42:04Speaker 2: That's a four thirty first pitch.
- 42:06Speaker 1: Help me out on the HD signal where folks can
- 42:09Speaker 1: find that on the dial cam. I know, they obviously
- 42:12Speaker 1: can get it on Texas loong oornge dot com or
- 42:15Speaker 1: excuse well, they can, and they can also the Texas
- 42:18Speaker 1: Longrorns app and then connect to it through the iHeartRadio app.
- 42:21Speaker 1: That's how a lot of folks follow Andrew Hayes calling
- 42:23Speaker 1: LONGWRN Softball. But also we have an HD signal. Right, No,
- 42:26Speaker 1: it's only on the app. So if you down three
- 42:29Speaker 1: radio app, it's Retro Austin. That's what I was thinking of. Okay,
- 42:33Speaker 1: so it's Retro Austin off of the app when you
- 42:36Speaker 1: download off the app. Okay, all right, I just wanted
- 42:38Speaker 1: to make sure I had all all of that correct
- 42:41Speaker 1: on that with folks will listen. And it's in a
- 42:43Speaker 1: crucial series because you know, Texas comes off dropping two
- 42:46Speaker 1: out of three at home to Tennessee last weekend and
- 42:54Speaker 1: they're now thirty nine and five, and Long Worn Softball
- 42:58Speaker 1: has fallen out now only a half game back of
- 43:02Speaker 1: Texas A and M for the top of the SEC standings.
- 43:06Speaker 1: And also there are only one game up on Oklahoma,
- 43:10Speaker 1: so they're half game behind UH, They're one half game
- 43:15Speaker 1: behind UH, Texas A and M. And they're one half
- 43:20Speaker 1: game up or one full game up on Oklahoma in
- 43:24Speaker 1: the conference standing. So it's tight race enseoftball. Just it
- 43:28Speaker 1: is as it is in baseball as well. All Right,
- 43:30Speaker 1: speaking of baseball, a guy who's just been lights out
- 43:35Speaker 1: on the mountain for the Long Warrens freshman from California
- 43:41Speaker 1: out of the bullpen for Texas from Thousand Oaks went
- 43:44Speaker 1: to Harvard West Lake.
- 43:45Speaker 2: This is a guy.
- 43:46Speaker 1: Who has has just posted monster numbers for Texas. Dylan Valantis,
- 43:56Speaker 1: the freshman lefty, is three and oh with a one
- 43:58Speaker 1: point one five and eight saves in thirty one in
- 44:04Speaker 1: the third innings, He's allowed nineteen total hits scattered through
- 44:07Speaker 1: thirty one and a third innings. He's allowed six total runs,
- 44:11Speaker 1: four of those earned. He's walked, five, struck out forty,
- 44:15Speaker 1: allowed four extra base hits to doubles, to homers, and
- 44:20Speaker 1: opposing inners are only batting one seventy six against him
- 44:22Speaker 1: in conference play. Phalanthas hays a zero five to five ERA.
- 44:28Speaker 1: It was zero zero zero until he gave up that
- 44:32Speaker 1: game time home run in the ninth on Saturday Kentucky,
- 44:36Speaker 1: but he's one to oher with seven says. Seven of
- 44:39Speaker 1: his eight saves have come in conference play, so he'll
- 44:42Speaker 1: He's made nine appearances, seven saves in the nine appearances
- 44:46Speaker 1: one and oh with a zero five to five ERA,
- 44:49Speaker 1: sixteen and a third innings and conference play, scattering eight hits.
- 44:53Speaker 1: That's won every other inning He's allowed with only one
- 44:56Speaker 1: run that was the homer, two walks, twenty four strikeouts,
- 45:00Speaker 1: has given up one other extra base hit a double.
- 45:03Speaker 1: So Dylan Valantis has just been tremendous and he's been
- 45:06Speaker 1: obviously a pleasant surprise to.
- 45:09Speaker 2: A lot of folks this season.
- 45:12Speaker 1: And he had a chance to meet with the media
- 45:14Speaker 1: and answered some questions yesterday about how things have gone
- 45:17Speaker 1: for him in this freshman season Scrubs and he was.
- 45:19Speaker 12: Wearing the bowling championship. Sure, what was your bowling skills Like?
- 45:25Speaker 13: In the beginning, it's kind of rough, But towards the end,
- 45:28Speaker 13: I actually kind of helped the team out a bit
- 45:31Speaker 13: with a couple of strikes back to back to back,
- 45:33Speaker 13: so that it was a really fun tournament you had.
- 45:38Speaker 13: Kind of towards the beginning though, was a little rough.
- 45:41Speaker 13: I got a couple of gutter balls, but towards the Yeah,
- 45:45Speaker 13: at the end, it was way better.
- 45:48Speaker 14: Grubbs just said at the midpoint of SECLA, can't vote
- 45:52Speaker 14: for yourself. You know who would be the MVP this
- 45:55Speaker 14: team right now? He said, you, So, I'll ask you
- 45:58Speaker 14: the question, who would.
- 46:00Speaker 9: You vote for? As that gay?
- 46:03Speaker 13: Yeah, it's so hard just naming one player, especially on
- 46:05Speaker 13: this team. I mean Grubs, he's been phenomenal, being able
- 46:12Speaker 13: to go in long relief multiple Indians have just shut
- 46:15Speaker 13: out baseball and throwing strikes like he always does. It's
- 46:18Speaker 13: just it's just awesome to watch. It's just hard between
- 46:22Speaker 13: Galvan and Grubs. I mean, I want to say both
- 46:24Speaker 13: of them for sure, just both phenomenal players.
- 46:27Speaker 15: Galvan brings the energy and gets the.
- 46:30Speaker 13: Spirit going and just catching and hitting has been unbelievable.
- 46:34Speaker 15: So I would say definitely Grubs and gouv On.
- 46:38Speaker 16: He also mentioned that if you were probably the player
- 46:41Speaker 16: that they asked why your successful, probably that he's never
- 46:46Speaker 16: met somebody who loves the game.
- 46:47Speaker 9: As much as Yun. Yeah, what does that look like
- 46:49Speaker 9: to you?
- 46:50Speaker 16: How much do you love this game and how does.
- 46:52Speaker 13: That play out on a few Yeah, I love this
- 46:55Speaker 13: game a ton, and I do anything to get better
- 46:59Speaker 13: each and every day. So I go on with the
- 47:00Speaker 13: mentality of just coming to practice and learning something new,
- 47:05Speaker 13: just recovering and getting stronger each every day and each
- 47:09Speaker 13: and every day. So I love this game. I do
- 47:11Speaker 13: it for, you know, myself, my family and my friends
- 47:14Speaker 13: back at home. And I'm just super grateful to beat
- 47:17Speaker 13: where I am and I think I take the advantage
- 47:20Speaker 13: of it to the most of my ability.
- 47:23Speaker 9: Where did that look help from?
- 47:26Speaker 15: I'm just growing up.
- 47:27Speaker 13: I'm starting to play when I was yeah, three and four,
- 47:30Speaker 13: and then my dad was just always there with me
- 47:32Speaker 13: and by my side, and you know, he wants to
- 47:35Speaker 13: see me succeed, and I hope I succeed too, So.
- 47:39Speaker 9: I just do it for me and my dad.
- 47:41Speaker 13: Really, it's just he's just always been there for me,
- 47:44Speaker 13: and I want to prove to him how good I
- 47:46Speaker 13: can be.
- 47:47Speaker 9: How much you enjoy. But the late game, on especially
- 47:49Speaker 9: SEC play.
- 47:51Speaker 15: You can't really beat it.
- 47:52Speaker 13: I mean, like one run game, two run games, Todd games,
- 47:55Speaker 13: I mean, those are just you can't beat those feelings.
- 47:58Speaker 13: And you're on that mound and go And I'm just
- 48:03Speaker 13: super lucky to be in a position to where they
- 48:05Speaker 13: can trust me to be in that spot and give
- 48:07Speaker 13: me that ball and it's ninth inning, THI game, or.
- 48:10Speaker 15: Try to get a quick couple outs.
- 48:12Speaker 13: I'm super grateful to be in that spot where I
- 48:15Speaker 13: can go out there and just throw strikes, take.
- 48:17Speaker 17: Us through the you give up the home run in
- 48:21Speaker 17: the ninth against Kentucky, you just mow down the rest
- 48:25Speaker 17: of the guys in that inning, take us through your
- 48:28Speaker 17: your mindset and pandeling that.
- 48:30Speaker 15: I mean, I mean, yeah, baseball, it's not going to
- 48:33Speaker 15: go your way always.
- 48:34Speaker 13: So yeah, him having that home run, there's a there's
- 48:38Speaker 13: a good hit here in that one, so you can't
- 48:41Speaker 13: be mad about it. And it's in the past now,
- 48:42Speaker 13: so you know, I when I go out there, and
- 48:46Speaker 13: you know, it's bound to happen to everyone.
- 48:48Speaker 15: No matter how good you are or anything. So it's
- 48:52Speaker 15: just it's bound to happen.
- 48:53Speaker 13: Just be able to control your feelings after that happens,
- 48:55Speaker 13: and just forget about it.
- 48:57Speaker 15: Is played the biggest thing doing.
- 49:00Speaker 18: Y'all are obviously ahead in first in the SEC and
- 49:03Speaker 18: at a half what point?
- 49:04Speaker 9: What what's it gonna take to still be there in
- 49:05Speaker 9: five weeks from now?
- 49:07Speaker 15: I think, just keep on doing what we're doing, you
- 49:09Speaker 15: know how fun.
- 49:11Speaker 13: Or our bond together it's just like a brotherhood almost,
- 49:14Speaker 13: so it it it helps a ton, Uh when around
- 49:17Speaker 13: that mound and I got all my infielders and Galvan
- 49:21Speaker 13: just cheering me on and just helping me out to
- 49:24Speaker 13: go through the just to get through it. So I
- 49:27Speaker 13: I think just hitting, you know, pitching and hitting has
- 49:30Speaker 13: been really good.
- 49:31Speaker 15: So just keeping those up and having a good time.
- 49:33Speaker 18: Is that? Is that something y'all are talking about what
- 49:35Speaker 18: it would like, what would be like to to win
- 49:37Speaker 18: win the SEC?
- 49:38Speaker 15: In your work?
- 49:39Speaker 13: Uh, we don't really like to. I mean I don't
- 49:42Speaker 13: really like talking about it. You know, winning anything, we
- 49:44Speaker 13: just gotta earn it. So I Uh, we take it
- 49:47Speaker 13: one game at a time. Each day's opening day that
- 49:50Speaker 13: we have a game, so it's just a first game
- 49:52Speaker 13: of the season. So we maybe after the fact if
- 49:55Speaker 13: you do, but as of right now, it's just opening day.
- 49:59Speaker 8: Well is always.
- 50:03Speaker 14: Well, what does Ruger bring to this pitching staff, to
- 50:06Speaker 14: this team? You're already smiling? Yeah, would you know, just
- 50:12Speaker 14: describe him and his impact.
- 50:14Speaker 13: He's just he's the funniest guy for sure. He's always
- 50:17Speaker 13: got something new to say. I always got something to
- 50:19Speaker 13: make you laugh. If if he sees you like a
- 50:22Speaker 13: little bummed out about something, maybe something outside of baseball,
- 50:24Speaker 13: he's always there and he'll cheer you up and give
- 50:27Speaker 13: you a hug or a little smack on the butt
- 50:30Speaker 13: or something, just saying like let's let's keep going. And
- 50:32Speaker 13: he just he's a jokester for sure, always has a
- 50:35Speaker 13: nice joke to say.
- 50:37Speaker 14: Do you have a nickname for him?
- 50:41Speaker 9: Not?
- 50:41Speaker 13: I mean it's it's usually just like rude. But I mean,
- 50:45Speaker 13: we got a couple of nicknames about his mustache. Yeah,
- 50:50Speaker 13: that's a nice mustache he's got, so we we kind
- 50:52Speaker 13: of got some nicknames about that, and just about his
- 50:54Speaker 13: personality as well.
- 50:55Speaker 15: That's a better him or.
- 50:57Speaker 13: Groups that's hard. I like Ruger's. I think it's just
- 51:07Speaker 13: it fits his personality a lot. I mean, I don't
- 51:10Speaker 13: even remember what he's like without him having a mustache anymore.
- 51:13Speaker 15: So, uh, I love that look on him for sure.
- 51:16Speaker 19: It feels like a lot of your success, it's not
- 51:18Speaker 19: velocity to kind of like, what do you think has really.
- 51:20Speaker 18: Helped you as far as development here on the mound
- 51:24Speaker 18: here this season?
- 51:26Speaker 13: Yeah, I mean it's just always getting ahead of the hitter, like,
- 51:29Speaker 13: don't don't get behind that. That's when the hit start
- 51:31Speaker 13: to happen and you.
- 51:33Speaker 15: Get walks as well. So just kind of not giving anyone.
- 51:36Speaker 13: Free basis and making him earn for it, winning the
- 51:39Speaker 13: O and the one to one, just to get ahead
- 51:41Speaker 13: of them and you know, it's just gonna make it
- 51:43Speaker 13: a lot tougher for them.
- 51:44Speaker 15: And being able to throw my pitches for strikes. It's
- 51:47Speaker 15: it definitely helps a ton.
- 51:48Speaker 10: When you get a call to throw a particular pitch.
- 51:51Speaker 10: What is your most favorite pitch to throw up? That
- 51:53Speaker 10: curve ball for sure? Like one, one, like one, two
- 51:57Speaker 10: oh two? Those are my favorite for sure.
- 51:59Speaker 13: I just a lot of confidence in that and I
- 52:01Speaker 13: can usually land it for strikes on much every time,
- 52:03Speaker 13: So it's it's it's a nice pitch to have for sure.
- 52:06Speaker 12: Going back to what Chip said earlier with Max picking
- 52:09Speaker 12: you to be MVP, I mean, what does that feel
- 52:11Speaker 12: like to have an older guy like him say that
- 52:14Speaker 12: about you?
- 52:15Speaker 15: Yeah, it it it means a lot.
- 52:17Speaker 13: I mean, I he's he's such a nice guy and uh,
- 52:21Speaker 13: just a hell of foot ball player.
- 52:23Speaker 15: So he's he's a.
- 52:25Speaker 13: It means a lot, and it really helps me, you know,
- 52:29Speaker 13: just be positive about everything.
- 52:32Speaker 15: But yeah, it's just you.
- 52:33Speaker 13: Know, job's not finished, so it's kind of I hope
- 52:35Speaker 13: I can, you know, continue to do how I'm doing
- 52:37Speaker 13: and you know, just have fun out there and enjoy
- 52:40Speaker 13: it like it's my last.
- 52:41Speaker 15: Yeah.
- 52:41Speaker 12: And and then he he also mentioned that you also coaches,
- 52:44Speaker 12: specifically Max, I think kind of told you as to
- 52:46Speaker 12: do yourselves as a number one team in the country
- 52:48Speaker 12: at the beginning of this season, Did you expect to
- 52:51Speaker 12: be number one in the rankings?
- 52:53Speaker 15: Yeah, I mean with the team that we have, I mean,
- 52:55Speaker 15: I I knew it was bound to be. We're we're
- 52:58Speaker 15: bound to be.
- 52:58Speaker 13: Number one at some point, you know, just the way
- 53:01Speaker 13: that we perform and act and have fun and do
- 53:05Speaker 13: our jobs as hitters.
- 53:07Speaker 15: It's not We're not selfish at all, or you know, for.
- 53:09Speaker 13: The team that helps the times do your job, you know,
- 53:12Speaker 13: not trying to hit the big home runs, big big swings,
- 53:16Speaker 13: just kind of get base runners and timely hitting.
- 53:19Speaker 17: You and gas Brino are from the same area.
- 53:23Speaker 9: Did you know him before you came here?
- 53:27Speaker 15: What was I didn't really know him like like that.
- 53:32Speaker 13: I mean, I knew the name from Harvard Westlake, but
- 53:35Speaker 13: I never actually got to talk to him during high
- 53:37Speaker 13: school or anything.
- 53:38Speaker 15: Back at home. I did know Tommy.
- 53:40Speaker 13: He was at our rival high school across the street,
- 53:44Speaker 13: so I knew him and faced him a couple of
- 53:47Speaker 13: times in high school, so it was it was fun.
- 53:49Speaker 15: But yeah, I didn't really know Will too too much.
- 53:52Speaker 14: As anyone said that your curve looks like a fastball, like.
- 53:59Speaker 13: Out of the hands or yeah, because I think it
- 54:02Speaker 13: has more like late break towards it, and some curveballs
- 54:05Speaker 13: you kind of see it pop up out.
- 54:06Speaker 15: Of the hands.
- 54:07Speaker 13: But yeah, I haven't really asked many like hitters or
- 54:12Speaker 13: catchers about that, But yeah, I think it looks more
- 54:15Speaker 13: like a fastball than it does kind of pop out
- 54:17Speaker 13: of the hand.
- 54:18Speaker 15: So how did these match ups with PM carmer Go
- 54:21Speaker 15: in high school. Yeah, not too good for me. I
- 54:26Speaker 15: think he was. He got two doubles off the wall
- 54:28Speaker 15: in one game off me.
- 54:29Speaker 13: It was my junior year. One was a fastball and
- 54:33Speaker 13: one was a curveball. Yeah, he did ownly that that series.
- 54:37Speaker 15: But I, you know, I struck him out.
- 54:40Speaker 13: I think like twice he got two hits off me
- 54:42Speaker 13: or something, so I guess it's even, but not really.
- 54:45Speaker 13: I think he's kind of got the upper hand on
- 54:46Speaker 13: me on that.
- 54:47Speaker 12: What was the animals like when you guys became teammates
- 54:50Speaker 12: and you were actually.
- 54:51Speaker 13: Interacting, it was it was cool, you know, it's it's
- 54:54Speaker 13: really it's nice time with someone from back home on
- 54:57Speaker 13: the team.
- 54:57Speaker 15: You can relate to back at home from high school,
- 54:59Speaker 15: and it's it's really nice.
- 55:02Speaker 13: I was during fallball scrimmages there's I was looking forward
- 55:06Speaker 13: to face Tommy because I wanted that revenge and I
- 55:08Speaker 13: got a couple at bats or I got a pitch
- 55:11Speaker 13: to him a couple of times in fall, so I
- 55:13Speaker 13: was just to get to get that revenge back at him.
- 55:16Speaker 4: At the beginning of the interview, you may have heard
- 55:19Speaker 4: Falantis he was asked about the Bowling Champs. Sure, nope,
- 55:24Speaker 4: you're not tripping. The reporter did ask about bowling. That's
- 55:28Speaker 4: because Max Grubbs, who you might hear in the four
- 55:32Speaker 4: third hour of the day's program, was wearing a tank
- 55:36Speaker 4: top Texas Baseball Bowling Champs shirt. Now, I don't think
- 55:40Speaker 4: you can they settled at the ut co op or
- 55:42Speaker 4: a Nike and so he was asked about it. And
- 55:44Speaker 4: I guess from the offseason. At some point during the
- 55:46Speaker 4: fall season, the team had a team bonding exercise where
- 55:49Speaker 4: they went bowling in Max Scrubbs allegedly won the bowling
- 55:56Speaker 4: championship the bowling tournament, and so that's why Dn Falantis
- 56:00Speaker 4: was asked about the bowling. And when we do play
- 56:03Speaker 4: the audio for Max Grubs, you get to hear who
- 56:06Speaker 4: he called the two worst bowlers on the team. They
- 56:10Speaker 4: may they may surprise you. Craig is visiting with Jim
- 56:14Speaker 4: Slowsnegle right now, the Texas Baseball head coach, as the
- 56:16Speaker 4: Longhorns are hosting a red hot Auburn Tigers baseball club.
- 56:20Speaker 4: We're gonna hear more from Jim Slashnagle and Max Grubs
- 56:23Speaker 4: throughout the program here on this Thursday afternoon you're listening
- 56:26Speaker 4: on the free iHeartRadio app.
- 56:39Speaker 9: We're back.
- 56:40Speaker 6: It's the Craig Way Show with Hall of vame broadcaster
- 56:43Speaker 6: and voice of the Texas Longhearts Craig Way.
- 56:48Speaker 1: Okay, we aren't even too repped up Friday yet, you
- 56:53Speaker 1: know yet? Cameron Parker continues to rev us up here
- 56:56Speaker 1: on the Maybe maybe you're feeling the same way I am, Cam,
- 56:58Speaker 1: because there's gonna be a baseball game, and I keep
- 57:00Speaker 1: having to remind myself today is Thursday, not Friday, because
- 57:05Speaker 1: I'm used to being at the ballpark on Tuesdays and
- 57:07Speaker 1: Fridays to do the program Tuesdays and Fridays pretty regularly.
- 57:12Speaker 2: But it's a Thursday.
- 57:13Speaker 1: In fact, the Loghorns have three of their five remaining
- 57:18Speaker 1: there's a halfway point of SEC play and three of
- 57:23Speaker 1: their five remaining series or Thursday, Friday Saturday.
- 57:26Speaker 2: This one is Thursday through Saturday.
- 57:28Speaker 1: Now next week weekend against Texas A and M is Friday,
- 57:31Speaker 1: Saturday and Sunday.
- 57:33Speaker 2: Then Arkansas.
- 57:34Speaker 1: The big Showdown series in Fayetteville is Thursday, Friday Saturday.
- 57:38Speaker 1: Then their home finale series when they have seen Your
- 57:42Speaker 1: Day and all of that, that's a Friday Saturday Sunday,
- 57:45Speaker 1: second weekend in May against Florida, and then they conclude
- 57:48Speaker 1: the regular season in Norman at Oklahoma on a Thursday
- 57:52Speaker 1: Friday Saturday, because the SEC Tournament begins early the next week,
- 57:58Speaker 1: so everybody's playing Thursday through Saturday, that final weekend of
- 58:02Speaker 1: the season. So they're getting ready to play the Auburn Tigers.
- 58:07Speaker 1: And you've heard me discuss the situation with regard to
- 58:11Speaker 1: the injured Longhorns. We know Max Blue is out for
- 58:13Speaker 1: a while. We know that Adrian Rodriguez has come back
- 58:18Speaker 1: from that bad bone bruise there around the hamate and
- 58:22Speaker 1: has been able to play some in the field and
- 58:25Speaker 1: can swing from the left side. And then of course
- 58:29Speaker 1: the updated situation with regard to Ethan Mendoza diving for
- 58:32Speaker 1: the ball and landing on his shoulder has him listed
- 58:35Speaker 1: as day to day now in the SEC Student Athlete
- 58:38Speaker 1: Availability Report, the injury report, he's listed as probable for.
- 58:42Speaker 3: The nights game.
- 58:43Speaker 2: So that was one of the questions.
- 58:44Speaker 1: Just a moment ago, I was down on the field
- 58:47Speaker 1: with head coach Jim slas Nagel, And here's the conversation
- 58:50Speaker 1: I had with Jim, not only with regard to the
- 58:53Speaker 1: injured guys, but how his team has played through thirty
- 58:57Speaker 1: five ball games at thirty wins and five losses. It's
- 59:00Speaker 1: all about I know, through thirty five ball games that
- 59:03Speaker 1: we please well, the team that's played thirty wins and
- 59:05Speaker 1: thirty five games and overcoming, I think is probably what
- 59:08Speaker 1: stands out as much as anything else.
- 59:10Speaker 2: With all the guys you've had banged up.
- 59:12Speaker 7: Yeah, you know, I think, uh, you know, I think
- 59:14Speaker 7: most teams could probably say that. There's certainly teams out
- 59:17Speaker 7: there they've had big injuries, but we've had a lot
- 59:19Speaker 7: of them.
- 59:19Speaker 8: Uh. And on a team that, you know, the first
- 59:22Speaker 8: year of a new.
- 59:23Speaker 7: Coaching staff where your depth of talent isn't you know
- 59:27Speaker 7: where we'd like for it to be at least sec level.
- 59:30Speaker 7: It's you know, you no disrespect to anybody, it's just
- 59:33Speaker 7: a fact, uh, we got you know that the frontline
- 59:36Speaker 7: talent is significantly further ahead of the rest of the talent.
- 59:39Speaker 7: And so you know, the win into the season saying
- 59:41Speaker 7: to be real tough for us to be super successful
- 59:44Speaker 7: if we lose guys like Ballou and you know, you
- 59:48Speaker 7: know the marquee names. But we've you know, we've pitched,
- 59:50Speaker 7: we're pitching. I knew, I knew we would pitch. Well,
- 59:53Speaker 7: I didn't think we would, you know, it wasn't. We've
- 59:55Speaker 7: had some good surprises on the mound and and uh
- 59:58Speaker 7: so when.
- 59:58Speaker 8: You can pitch, you always give yourself a chance.
- 1:00:00Speaker 2: We give you an opportunity.
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: Just to update fans a little bit on where things
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: stand the injury wise, the sec AS it's Student Athlete
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: Availability Report and Ethan was listed is probable for tonight,
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: And I know you mentioned yesterday's day to day and
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: with regard to his shoulder and then of course blup
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: trying to make progress with the thumb and then then
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: a rod also with his hand and where can you
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: bring everybody up there?
- 1:00:22Speaker 2: Just on where things are with those guys.
- 1:00:24Speaker 7: Yeah, I would say Mendoza is going to be able
- 1:00:27Speaker 7: to hit before he can throw, and then his hitting
- 1:00:31Speaker 7: will be day to day relative to how he feels.
- 1:00:33Speaker 7: You know, he may have a day where he feels
- 1:00:34Speaker 7: awesome and then maybe takes some swings or I don't know,
- 1:00:38Speaker 7: swings through a pitch or something happens on a particular
- 1:00:40Speaker 7: pitch that aggravates him a little bit, maybe down for
- 1:00:42Speaker 7: a little bit. So you just have to wait and see,
- 1:00:44Speaker 7: but if anybody can play through anything, it's him.
- 1:00:46Speaker 8: The defense to throwing, you know, that may be a
- 1:00:48Speaker 8: little bit.
- 1:00:49Speaker 7: Max is progressing every days, he's rehabbing his thumb. The
- 1:00:53Speaker 7: stitches are out, he's you know, doing whatever it is
- 1:00:57Speaker 7: that the trainers do, grip strength and getting movement, full
- 1:01:00Speaker 7: on movement and strength back in his thumb to the
- 1:01:02Speaker 7: point where he's we think, especially since it's since the
- 1:01:09Speaker 7: injury is in his top hand on his back. So
- 1:01:11Speaker 7: he's a right handed thrower by a left handed hitters,
- 1:01:13Speaker 7: so that's actually a good thing for us. Not as
- 1:01:15Speaker 7: much pressure on that hand when you hit, So maybe
- 1:01:17Speaker 7: he can hit before he can before he can play
- 1:01:19Speaker 7: the field.
- 1:01:20Speaker 8: Of course, you're only allowed to with dhs, so what.
- 1:01:22Speaker 7: May have to get creative on that end, and then
- 1:01:24Speaker 7: a rod is he's making progress every day. It's just
- 1:01:27Speaker 7: a bone bruise that there are some days where are
- 1:01:29Speaker 7: some particular swings where it bothers him in other days
- 1:01:31Speaker 7: where he's totally fine. And so it's one of those
- 1:01:34Speaker 7: deals where like he's seventy percent of a rod better
- 1:01:37Speaker 7: than one hundred percent of the other option relative to
- 1:01:40Speaker 7: the defense and relative to the options. So I think
- 1:01:43Speaker 7: a Rod will be in there more often than not.
- 1:01:45Speaker 7: I think Mendoza should be in there tonight unless something
- 1:01:48Speaker 7: happens between now and game time, and Max is probably
- 1:01:51Speaker 7: at the earliest I would say three weeks away and
- 1:01:54Speaker 7: as much as five weeks ago.
- 1:01:57Speaker 2: Yesterday's media availability.
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: One thing was notable is that nobody Auburn and and
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: you said, it's a really good team coming in and
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: it's a team that just finished sweeping LSU. What about
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: your impressions of the Tigers.
- 1:02:07Speaker 7: Yeah, really strong baseball team, so we've played. I thought
- 1:02:11Speaker 7: LSU had a really strong baseball team, not a typical
- 1:02:14Speaker 7: l s U big thumper through through the lineup team,
- 1:02:18Speaker 7: So really good baseball team that could play baseball in
- 1:02:21Speaker 7: a lot of different ways.
- 1:02:22Speaker 8: They could thump you, they could get the safety.
- 1:02:24Speaker 7: Squeezes down, they run bases, play really good defense with
- 1:02:28Speaker 7: Milam and Dickinson. And the reason I say that is
- 1:02:31Speaker 7: Auburn swept them, so they're pitching lights out, especially out
- 1:02:35Speaker 7: of the bullpen, and they have two one. I think
- 1:02:40Speaker 7: the best hitter in our league is Ike Irish. I
- 1:02:43Speaker 7: don't I actually don't think it's close.
- 1:02:44Speaker 10: Uh.
- 1:02:45Speaker 8: I think he's a superstar big league player.
- 1:02:48Speaker 7: He doesn't. You can't pitch him the same. It doesn't
- 1:02:50Speaker 7: matter left or right, it really doesn't. You can't defend them.
- 1:02:54Speaker 7: You can play shifts if you want, but he's gonna
- 1:02:56Speaker 7: take his hits the other way or he'll just hit
- 1:02:58Speaker 7: it over the shift.
- 1:02:58Speaker 8: So really really good player.
- 1:03:00Speaker 7: And then mc murray behind him is is he's performed
- 1:03:03Speaker 7: as well.
- 1:03:04Speaker 8: Uh and and so they have speed.
- 1:03:07Speaker 7: They just play really really really sound baseball, like you know,
- 1:03:10Speaker 7: like I would like to think people say about us,
- 1:03:12Speaker 7: and and they're playing well.
- 1:03:14Speaker 8: So I'm playing with a lot of confidence.
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: So there's your scouting report, if you will, with regard
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: to you know, to uh to Auburn, because nothing was
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: really asked about the Tigers yesterday. So uh now you
- 1:03:29Speaker 1: know a little bit more about this Auburn team that
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: comes in batting three oh three is a team e
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: r A t e r A is four four five
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: n SEC play where they are nine and six. They're
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: batting two seventy one, but they're on an uptick and
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: uh they're they're e r A. They've given up some runs,
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: but they didn't against LSU. They give up two runs
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: a game and that brought their uh TM E ra
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: a in SEC games down to five to one.
- 1:03:56Speaker 3: One.
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: Uh. The other thing is you heard him talking about
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: Ike Irish. Irish is a junior from Michigan and is
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: a catcher and outfielder in conference play well. First of all, overall,
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: he's bat three forty five impressive enough, put seven homers
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: in thirty runs, bat at ays, drown nineteen walks, and
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: been hit by a pitch five times. He got an
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: on base percentage of four fifty one and a slugging
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: percentage of six twenty two. In SEC games, ike Irish
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: is batting four oh eight with four of his seven
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: homers and eleven of his thirty RBI is coming in
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: conference play. He has a slugging percentage in SEC games
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: of eight sixteen eight sixteen. The slugging percentage so this
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: is a team that can swing the bats and get
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: some key pitching, as they did.
- 1:04:47Speaker 2: To sweep LSU last weekend.
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: All right, we'll be back to wrap up our number
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: two here from UFCU Dish fault field.
- 1:04:54Speaker 2: I'm thirteen under the zone.
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: The Texas Longhorns will be in action tonight as they
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: take on the Auburn Tigers, and that game will come
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: your way at seven o'clock. We'll have it for you
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: on one oh three point one FM. Our sister station,
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: Austin SAD Stations will have it for you one oh
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: three point one FM, and that will come your way
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: six forty five with the pregame start time, and the
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: first pitch will be at seven o'clock and the Longhorns
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: will be of course going with Jared Spencer. They're left hander.
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: The senior transfers four and one and a three point
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: oh a d ra A. Auburn's right hander Samuel.
- 1:05:31Speaker 3: Dutton will go.
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: Dutton is a senior right hander and he began his
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: collegiate career at LSU before he transferred in He's five
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: and two of a two three four earn run average,
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: and he has a complete game this season as well.
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: In fact, he's pitched fifty innings and Spencer's pitched forty
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: nine and two thirds innings, so those numbers pretty much
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: check out. But he'll be on the mound for Auburn
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: right hander. In fact, Auburn is going to go right
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: left right right hander scheduled for tonight's contest a left
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: hander tomorrow evening Kate Fisher against the long Orange lefty
- 1:06:07Speaker 1: Luke Harrison, and then on Saturday, Auburn has a right
- 1:06:10Speaker 1: hander Andreas Alvarez going and Ruger Riojas, the right hander
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: will go on Saturday for Texas. You heard from Jim
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: Schlasnegel the conversation I had with him just a few
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: minutes ago, and we brought that to you there and
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: if you missed it, you can catch it on our
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: podcast page at thirteen hundred the Zone AM thirteen under
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: the Zone.
- 1:06:29Speaker 3: You can do that.
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: But we're gonna hear some more from Jim Schlasnagel coming
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: up in a few minutes from the media availability yesterday
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: with some other specific questions about specific players and the team,
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: So we'll bring that to you. Also later this hour,
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: we'll hear from Max Grubbs, the long Orange junior right
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: hander who has looked really good of late on the mound.
- 1:06:51Speaker 1: He's five and oh with a one seven to one
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: ERA with four saves. He has been their long and
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: middle to closing guy to fit the show games, and
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: he was big in the Friday night went over Kentucky
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: because it was very cold and hard for pitchers to
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: get a grip on the ball and Jared Spencer did
- 1:07:09Speaker 1: not have his best outing had to come out after
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: four and two thirds innings. He had thrown a lot
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: of pitches and in those incredibly cold and windy conditions.
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: It was forty three degrees with fifteen mile an hour wins,
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: the wind chills in the low thirties. It felt awful.
- 1:07:23Speaker 1: But Grubs did a good job settling things down after that.
- 1:07:25Speaker 1: We'll hear from Max Grubs a little bit later on
- 1:07:27Speaker 1: this hour. Okay, Cameron, I know what a big fan
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: you are of Aaron Rodgers. And when I got here
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: to the ballpark and I turned on the television and
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: there he was, you know, on with Pat McAfee, who,
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: of course, you know, his his whole deal is his shtick,
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: his show, you know, even though it could come across
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: as somewhat clownish from time to time, but.
- 1:07:54Speaker 2: He does have that deal with roder.
- 1:07:56Speaker 1: Well aren't they paying Aaron Rodgers a million bucks ESPN
- 1:07:59Speaker 1: to do that segment every week with McAfee. Okay, so
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: he had him on, and you know how Aaron Rodgers
- 1:08:08Speaker 1: can be.
- 1:08:09Speaker 2: He can be.
- 1:08:11Speaker 1: Evasive, you know, doesn't really answer a lot of the
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: questions even when he gives you a long answer, that
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: kind of thing. But he did speak for the first
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: time since the Jets released him, and he was on
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: for about forty five minutes, and he said he was
- 1:08:28Speaker 1: really surprised by what the Jets did. He said, I
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: wasn't stringing anyone along, I wasn't holding anyone hostage. I
- 1:08:37Speaker 1: was honest from the jump about where I wasn't mentally
- 1:08:39Speaker 1: and some of the constraints I have in my life
- 1:08:41Speaker 1: right now that warrant my attention. So he talked about that,
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: and all of that's well and good, and you can
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: choose whether to take him at his word or not.
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: And let's just say we do take him at his word.
- 1:08:54Speaker 1: That doesn't necessarily mean that NFL teams are supposed to
- 1:08:58Speaker 1: sit idly by and wait for him to make up
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: his spot. They have their own timetable. They have to
- 1:09:03Speaker 1: decide what they're doing going forward. That's why I think, Cameron,
- 1:09:06Speaker 1: this thing is going to be fascinating to see if
- 1:09:10Speaker 1: Mike Tomlin and the Pittsburgh Steelers are willing to wait
- 1:09:14Speaker 1: long enough, well into the spring, for Aaron Rodgers to
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: decide if he wants to play football and a thing
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: come to an agreement and him signed with Pittsburgh.
- 1:09:22Speaker 2: Because that seems to be all the rumor.
- 1:09:24Speaker 4: It's funny because when I think of quarterbacks that would
- 1:09:26Speaker 4: work under Mike Tomlin's system, like personality wise, Aaron Rodgers
- 1:09:31Speaker 4: does not come to the top of that list in
- 1:09:33Speaker 4: my opinion, especially with how he's handling this offseason, the.
- 1:09:37Speaker 3: Whole Yeah, you know, I might retire.
- 1:09:39Speaker 4: And then you're hearing reports from Chef doing everyone else
- 1:09:41Speaker 4: that you know, talks are getting, you know, deeper and
- 1:09:44Speaker 4: deeper and more significant. And then here's Rogers going on
- 1:09:48Speaker 4: Pat McAfee and throwing Aaron glenn in the Jets organization
- 1:09:51Speaker 4: under the bus once again and complaining about this and
- 1:09:54Speaker 4: that and all of this talk. And it's like, man,
- 1:09:57Speaker 4: it's it's pretty funny. But then again, if you look
- 1:10:00Speaker 4: at the Pittsburgh Steelers death chart, you see Mason Rudolph
- 1:10:04Speaker 4: and Skyler Thompson at the starter in second trin position,
- 1:10:08Speaker 4: then you understand why Mike Tomlin is entertaining the idea
- 1:10:12Speaker 4: of signing Aaron Rodgers, because look, hey, their quarterback draft
- 1:10:15Speaker 4: history outside of Ben Roethlisberger has not been great the
- 1:10:20Speaker 4: last decade or so, so they're they're desperately looking for
- 1:10:23Speaker 4: a quarterback and you know, I don't know if Tomlin's
- 1:10:27Speaker 4: filling the heat. You know, obviously it feels like the
- 1:10:29Speaker 4: organization is very comfortable with Mike Tomlin, and Mike Tomlin
- 1:10:32Speaker 4: is very comfortable with the Rooney family. I believe that
- 1:10:35Speaker 4: owns the Pittsburgh Steelers. But at a certain point, Craig,
- 1:10:39Speaker 4: you know, you got to, you know, Pooper, get off
- 1:10:42Speaker 4: the toilet, because the Steelers, you know, they're making the playoffs,
- 1:10:44Speaker 4: but they're not winning playoff games.
- 1:10:46Speaker 3: They've been, you know, kind of mediocre.
- 1:10:48Speaker 4: And hey, maybe the organization is fine with just you know,
- 1:10:52Speaker 4: going to the playoffs every year, and you know there's
- 1:10:54Speaker 4: teams like the Browns who are just bagging to get
- 1:10:56Speaker 4: in the playoffs. But at a certain point you wonder, okay,
- 1:10:59Speaker 4: will the organization shouldn't get tired of these eight and
- 1:11:02Speaker 4: nine seasons or nine and eight seasons and making the
- 1:11:06Speaker 4: playoffs and losing a game. And I think a lot
- 1:11:08Speaker 4: of the issues, you know, since Roethlisberger retired has been
- 1:11:12Speaker 4: they haven't had a true quarterback that they can count on.
- 1:11:16Speaker 4: Russell Wilson last season was okay, you know, I think
- 1:11:19Speaker 4: he did a fine job, and Justin Fields was okay.
- 1:11:23Speaker 4: He did an okay job, but you know, as you
- 1:11:26Speaker 4: do need a quarterback. You look at the teams that
- 1:11:27Speaker 4: have won the Super Bowl, They've been guys like Patrick
- 1:11:30Speaker 4: Mahomes who have been able to elevate their team, and
- 1:11:33Speaker 4: the Steelers have not had that quarterback. So I think
- 1:11:36Speaker 4: that's why Mike tom and the Steelers are okay with
- 1:11:39Speaker 4: this whole charade from Aaron Rodgers.
- 1:11:42Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:11:42Speaker 1: And then again with regard to the deal with the Jets,
- 1:11:46Speaker 1: you know, making their plans and going in a different
- 1:11:49Speaker 1: direction as quote was, I was kind of shocked. Now,
- 1:11:51Speaker 1: I'm not shocked because I didn't think that was a possibility.
- 1:11:54Speaker 2: Listen.
- 1:11:54Speaker 1: Of course, so they want to move on, that's totally fine,
- 1:11:56Speaker 1: but shocked because I just flew across the country. You
- 1:11:59Speaker 1: could have told me this on the phone if we
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: weren't even going to have a conversation. Seriously, And then
- 1:12:04Speaker 1: he said he was refuting reports that he asked for
- 1:12:08Speaker 1: a significant amount of money or a multi year deal.
- 1:12:11Speaker 1: He said, quite say, He said, I told every single
- 1:12:13Speaker 1: one of the teams I talked to it ain't about
- 1:12:15Speaker 1: the money. I'll play for ten million dollars, I don't care.
- 1:12:19Speaker 1: I never once said I need a multi year deal,
- 1:12:20Speaker 1: thirty forty million. That's absolute bull bleep. I said, I'll
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: play for ten wherever.
- 1:12:24Speaker 2: That's it.
- 1:12:26Speaker 1: So just write him a check for ten million and
- 1:12:27Speaker 1: you're good. You're ready to go. So he did confirm
- 1:12:33Speaker 1: he's had conversations with the Vikings, the Giants, and the Steelers.
- 1:12:37Speaker 1: He likes Brian Daboll with the Giants, and he has
- 1:12:40Speaker 1: a lot of respect, he said, for Mike Tomlin and
- 1:12:44Speaker 1: the Pittsburgh organization. But he just made up his mind
- 1:12:48Speaker 1: on whether he's ready to play or wants to play
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: or whatever. Pat mcavie at one point asked him, how
- 1:12:56Speaker 1: often do you think about football? Like every day, every
- 1:12:59Speaker 1: waking minute. He goes very little, very little. I don't
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: know about that. I I don't know about that.
- 1:13:07Speaker 2: Well, here here's what I think.
- 1:13:10Speaker 1: I think he thinks about a contract and the money
- 1:13:14Speaker 1: that he can make playing football a lot.
- 1:13:16Speaker 2: But in terms of playing.
- 1:13:18Speaker 1: Football and you know, helping a team win, I don't
- 1:13:21Speaker 1: think he thinks that much about it. I think he
- 1:13:24Speaker 1: thinks that if the time comes and I get to
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: a point where I can make a deal, and I
- 1:13:29Speaker 1: make a deal, then I'll worry about who I'm dealing with.
- 1:13:32Speaker 3: He did.
- 1:13:32Speaker 2: He brought up a point.
- 1:13:33Speaker 1: About going to a workout all in California with DK
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: metcalf and showing up and he and he said he
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: has a lot of respect for DK. And he asked DK,
- 1:13:47Speaker 1: when do you start your workout and he said six am?
- 1:13:52Speaker 2: And he said, you have a lot of guys work
- 1:13:54Speaker 2: with you.
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: And he said, oh, there's a few that have come
- 1:13:57Speaker 1: through and they last for a week or two or
- 1:13:59Speaker 1: a few weeks, but then they end up bailing. And
- 1:14:03Speaker 1: Aaron Rodgers said that K metcalfell, Listen, I'm not gonna
- 1:14:06Speaker 1: come at six am, but but I would really like to.
- 1:14:09Speaker 2: Work with you. And so they did a deal where
- 1:14:12Speaker 2: they worked for a few days at eight am. So
- 1:14:14Speaker 2: that's an example what I'm saying.
- 1:14:15Speaker 1: I don't think he I think he believes that it
- 1:14:20Speaker 1: won't take him long to be in playing shape and
- 1:14:24Speaker 1: playing condition if he decides to play one more season
- 1:14:29Speaker 1: in the NFL. I think he believes it's not gonna
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: take me long at all. It's not gonna take me
- 1:14:34Speaker 1: long at all to do it. And that's what I
- 1:14:35Speaker 1: think he means when he says he doesn't think about
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: football the mess?
- 1:14:38Speaker 2: Now does he think about the money in the contract.
- 1:14:40Speaker 4: Yeah, I do think he does think about that, So
- 1:14:44Speaker 4: I think he thinks about himself.
- 1:14:46Speaker 1: Yes, yes, the money that he would make I totally agree.
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: I completely agree with you on that. That's that's him.
- 1:14:54Speaker 1: That's the Aaron Rodgers. We've come to dough So anyway,
- 1:14:59Speaker 1: all right, coming up, we're going to hear more from
- 1:15:03Speaker 1: Jim Schlosnangle, the long orange head coach on the eve
- 1:15:05Speaker 1: of this important weekend SEC series against the Auburn Tigers Thursday,
- 1:15:11Speaker 1: Friday Saturday series tonight at seven.
- 1:15:13Speaker 2: Tomorrow at six.
- 1:15:15Speaker 1: Time, change move forward by one hour, and Saturday at
- 1:15:18Speaker 1: noon time, change move forward by two hours from two
- 1:15:21Speaker 1: o'clock to noon. That's to accommodate Auburn's travel schedule. Wind
- 1:15:25Speaker 1: is blowing out here by the way, cam. This is
- 1:15:28Speaker 1: what we normally.
- 1:15:30Speaker 3: See, okay, right the left wind.
- 1:15:33Speaker 1: Yes, it's a little more straight out. It's a little
- 1:15:36Speaker 1: more straight coming out of the south. In fact, I'm
- 1:15:39Speaker 1: looking at it right now. It says south to southeast,
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: steady at sixteen gust up to twenty six. It looks
- 1:15:45Speaker 1: like it's steady at about twenty looking at it right now,
- 1:15:47Speaker 1: and it's almost blowing straight out. So we could see
- 1:15:51Speaker 1: a monster shot tonight cam we could see somebody hit
- 1:15:53Speaker 1: it over the batter's eye in dead center tonight. It
- 1:15:56Speaker 1: would get some help put it that way. I could
- 1:15:58Speaker 1: see jaylen Flores, who's not one over there before sending
- 1:16:02Speaker 1: one out over there. I could see them knocking one
- 1:16:05Speaker 1: out or Gasparino, both of whom hit the ball you
- 1:16:08Speaker 1: know well to all fields, but they do hit the
- 1:16:10Speaker 1: center and the left. They pull to left and hit
- 1:16:12Speaker 1: the center more often than they do to right. So
- 1:16:14Speaker 1: it wouldn't surprise me see one put one up in
- 1:16:17Speaker 1: that jet stream and see if they could drive it
- 1:16:18Speaker 1: out up next we'll hear more from Coach Lass when
- 1:16:21Speaker 1: we continue here from UFCU Dish falk Field on thirteen
- 1:16:25Speaker 1: under the zone.
- 1:16:34Speaker 6: Back to the Craig Way Show. Connect with Craig through
- 1:16:37Speaker 6: the text line by text Team Texas to eight one
- 1:16:40Speaker 6: five three zero followed by your message. Standard message and
- 1:16:43Speaker 6: data rates may apply.
- 1:16:48Speaker 2: Thursday afternoon of.
- 1:16:49Speaker 1: The ballpark here at UFCU dish falk Field. It is
- 1:16:55Speaker 1: Texas in action tonight against Auburn, and you'll hear its
- 1:16:59Speaker 1: sixty five air time seven o'clock first pitch. Keith Morland
- 1:17:02Speaker 1: will joined me for the call of that one before
- 1:17:04Speaker 1: we get to hearing more from Jim Slastnngle even and
- 1:17:07Speaker 1: I hadn't had a chance to talk about this. It
- 1:17:09Speaker 1: came out a couple of days ago. It's not just
- 1:17:13Speaker 1: a story. It's going to happen that Colorado is retiring
- 1:17:20Speaker 1: the jersey numbers of Travis Hunter and should do her Sanders. Now,
- 1:17:26Speaker 1: you just stop me where I go off the tracks here, Cam. Nobody,
- 1:17:31Speaker 1: absolutely nobody is questioning the decision to retire the jersey
- 1:17:37Speaker 1: number of Travis Hunter.
- 1:17:38Speaker 2: He won a Heisman Trophy.
- 1:17:39Speaker 9: If you've done.
- 1:17:40Speaker 1: That, I think that that does merits the credit and
- 1:17:45Speaker 1: the attention given for that. It should Doer Sanders that
- 1:17:50Speaker 1: everybody who is criticizing this thing is having a problem with.
- 1:17:54Speaker 1: They would be only the fifth and six players in
- 1:17:56Speaker 1: Colorado's one hundred and thirty five year history to have
- 1:18:01Speaker 1: that honor. And a lot of the past players and
- 1:18:04Speaker 1: graduates who heard when they announced that the number twelve
- 1:18:10Speaker 1: for Hunter and the number two for Sanders would be
- 1:18:12Speaker 1: retired before the spring game has some you know people upset.
- 1:18:17Speaker 1: You know, guys like Dion Figures and some other guys
- 1:18:20Speaker 1: who played and were great players of Colorado have never
- 1:18:23Speaker 1: had Byron Wizard White, Rashaan Salam who won a Heisman Trophy.
- 1:18:29Speaker 1: By the way, those guys have had their jersey numbers retired,
- 1:18:34Speaker 1: along with Bobby Anderson, Joe and Joe Romig. Those are
- 1:18:38Speaker 1: the only guys, but there's a lot of other guys
- 1:18:41Speaker 1: who haven't had their jersey numbers retired. And coach Prime
- 1:18:47Speaker 1: Dion Sanders started off after practice today with a quote,
- 1:18:52Speaker 1: can we start off with me just shaking everyone's hand
- 1:18:55Speaker 1: that played here before?
- 1:18:56Speaker 2: Just give them a hug.
- 1:18:58Speaker 1: They got to come back for that, right, Let's start
- 1:18:59Speaker 1: with That's what I want to do. So anyway, it's
- 1:19:03Speaker 1: it's It's been brought about quite a bit of conversation.
- 1:19:06Speaker 1: Pretty interesting, uh, that that bean has decided that his
- 1:19:11Speaker 1: son deserves to have his number retired.
- 1:19:13Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm curious, Craig, if s Door Sanders wasn't the
- 1:19:17Speaker 4: son of the head coach, would his jersey number be retired?
- 1:19:20Speaker 4: I mean, that's the question I think a lot of
- 1:19:22Speaker 4: people are asking. You know a lot of guys. I'm
- 1:19:24Speaker 4: looking at the career passing yards list for Colorado. There's
- 1:19:27Speaker 4: four guys who are ahead of Shador's name now of course,
- 1:19:30Speaker 4: granted they played four years and Shador only played two years.
- 1:19:34Speaker 4: So if Shador played four years, would he probably have
- 1:19:37Speaker 4: let the university as the all time passing yards leader? Probably?
- 1:19:41Speaker 4: But he only played two years. And what did Colorado accomplish?
- 1:19:46Speaker 3: What do they win?
- 1:19:47Speaker 1: Now?
- 1:19:47Speaker 4: If you want to say, well, they went from a
- 1:19:48Speaker 4: one win program to you know, seven eight wins and
- 1:19:53Speaker 4: Bowl eligible and this, and then yeah, that's great, You're
- 1:19:57Speaker 4: so you're you're lying. Your standard is just being buligible?
- 1:20:01Speaker 4: Is what makes you a good enough quarterback to have
- 1:20:03Speaker 4: your jersey retired? I'm not sure about that. Like Joe
- 1:20:07Speaker 4: Klapp is ahead of George Sanders in passing yards, I'm
- 1:20:11Speaker 4: sure Joe Clotte is thinking, you know, what the heck,
- 1:20:12Speaker 4: why isn't my jersey number retired?
- 1:20:14Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 1:20:15Speaker 1: Yeah, there's there's a lot of players asking that question.
- 1:20:18Speaker 1: Dion says he's he's never come across backlash. On on
- 1:20:23Speaker 1: a play on the announcement of any player's number being retired,
- 1:20:29Speaker 1: he said, first time I've ever seen it sore like
- 1:20:31Speaker 1: it being a sore subject. I don't know if you
- 1:20:33Speaker 1: know it, but I think every jersey I darn Near
- 1:20:36Speaker 1: played in is retired. So I'm pretty familiar with this.
- 1:20:38Speaker 1: It's never been sore. Uh that okay, well that that's
- 1:20:43Speaker 1: Dion playing, but that not to do or so anyway. Uh,
- 1:20:48Speaker 1: it'll uh it'll continue to cause some conversation, no doubt
- 1:20:51Speaker 1: about that. All right, Let's hear some more from Longhorn's
- 1:20:53Speaker 1: head coach Jim Slason Aegele. This from the media availability yesterday.
- 1:20:57Speaker 1: And uh we heard Jim last hour when I went
- 1:21:02Speaker 1: down and had a quick visit with him, talking about
- 1:21:05Speaker 1: the day by day routine that his guys are under.
- 1:21:11Speaker 1: And he was asked, you know, as this team has
- 1:21:16Speaker 1: risen up and has been able to achieve this number
- 1:21:18Speaker 1: one ranking, what do they do intentionally? What is the
- 1:21:23Speaker 1: intent on the practice field every day? What do they
- 1:21:25Speaker 1: do intentionally to be good?
- 1:21:28Speaker 8: Yeah? I mean it's great you say that. We have
- 1:21:30Speaker 8: a saying.
- 1:21:30Speaker 7: It doesn't happen by accident, happens by intention, you know,
- 1:21:33Speaker 7: just we don't just grab things out of the air
- 1:21:35Speaker 7: to work on them each day. It's okay, where are
- 1:21:38Speaker 7: we as a team? We self scout ourselves a ton.
- 1:21:41Speaker 7: Who are we playing? So obviously we're doing some defensive
- 1:21:46Speaker 7: work in left field right now. We're going to have
- 1:21:48Speaker 7: probably someone new playing second base, whether it be Rodriguez
- 1:21:52Speaker 7: or do Plantier or somebody like that. Got to get
- 1:21:55Speaker 7: them turning double plays. We got to get them to
- 1:21:57Speaker 7: make sure they're in the right position on a bunt defense,
- 1:22:00Speaker 7: on a first and third defense. You know, what are
- 1:22:02Speaker 7: the things that if I was coaching against Texas, knowing what.
- 1:22:05Speaker 8: I know, what would I try to expose?
- 1:22:07Speaker 7: You know, and you want to put players in position
- 1:22:10Speaker 7: to be successful. So it's hard for Adrian to know
- 1:22:14Speaker 7: where to go in a bunt defense.
- 1:22:15Speaker 8: We don't practice it. So just just things like that.
- 1:22:19Speaker 7: We put some We put something good in last week
- 1:22:22Speaker 7: before we played Kentucky. We were anticipating them doing something
- 1:22:26Speaker 7: and we executed it and got a free out in
- 1:22:29Speaker 7: the game on Sunday. That was a huge play. So
- 1:22:33Speaker 7: we're constantly believe me, you know my job. You know,
- 1:22:39Speaker 7: most people that know me may say he's kind of
- 1:22:41Speaker 7: a half empty guy.
- 1:22:42Speaker 8: It's not half empty.
- 1:22:43Speaker 7: I feel like when you're the leader as the coaches,
- 1:22:45Speaker 7: your job is to look at the op what are
- 1:22:47Speaker 7: the obstacles, Where are we weak?
- 1:22:49Speaker 8: Where can we be better?
- 1:22:51Speaker 7: And you just attack those all the time, knowing that
- 1:22:54Speaker 7: these guys hit like crazy, like they're in the cages
- 1:22:56Speaker 7: on their own.
- 1:22:56Speaker 8: We don't need to really hit that much.
- 1:22:59Speaker 7: It's more about playing good situational baseball and what are
- 1:23:03Speaker 7: those defensive things where we can get better.
- 1:23:05Speaker 1: So here's a team that's thirty wins and five losses.
- 1:23:08Speaker 1: They're sitting on top of the SEC standings at thirteen
- 1:23:12Speaker 1: and two in conference play at the midway mark. Three
- 1:23:15Speaker 1: of the five remaining conference series are at home. So
- 1:23:17Speaker 1: things would appear to be set up really nicely, really
- 1:23:21Speaker 1: well for this team going forward. But Schloss is going
- 1:23:27Speaker 1: to caution everybody on the adversity that is sure to
- 1:23:32Speaker 1: be just around the corner in the second half of
- 1:23:34Speaker 1: the season.
- 1:23:35Speaker 7: Well, I respect our opponent, I respect our league, I
- 1:23:38Speaker 7: respect the game. To think that the way some of
- 1:23:44Speaker 7: these guys have pitched against the competition that we play,
- 1:23:47Speaker 7: you know, I mean, there's just going to be days
- 1:23:50Speaker 7: where they get you. You know, Kate Anderson goes out
- 1:23:52Speaker 7: and throws the CG shutout against Oklahoma and goes to
- 1:23:57Speaker 7: Auburn last.
- 1:23:57Speaker 8: Week and you see how close the game games are.
- 1:24:00Speaker 7: I mean, look at the traffic that Spencer's had on
- 1:24:03Speaker 7: the basis for example, and this past weekend and he
- 1:24:06Speaker 7: just kept making pitches to get out of it.
- 1:24:08Speaker 8: And so it's just the time, you know, the timely hits.
- 1:24:10Speaker 7: The games are so close, and where we are offensively,
- 1:24:15Speaker 7: you know, there's where we're down a couple of bats
- 1:24:17Speaker 7: that that are good, but there are also bats that
- 1:24:19Speaker 7: change the game with one swing, and so when you
- 1:24:22Speaker 7: lose some of that, then you're gonna have to play
- 1:24:24Speaker 7: really good situational baseball. The scores of the games could
- 1:24:28Speaker 7: be a little closer and a little more tight, and
- 1:24:31Speaker 7: so just baseball itself doesn't lend it to win in
- 1:24:34Speaker 7: all those games. So, I mean, you look at the
- 1:24:36Speaker 7: teams we play, Auburn, A and M. Florida is still
- 1:24:40Speaker 7: super talented. Arkansas's easily, well not easily, one of the
- 1:24:44Speaker 7: top two or three most talented rosters in the country
- 1:24:47Speaker 7: by far. Oklahoma's having an unbelievable year, just swept Bandy.
- 1:24:51Speaker 7: So to think that the back half is going to
- 1:24:54Speaker 7: be like the first, I mean, I hope it would
- 1:24:56Speaker 7: be great, But again, my goal, we're still trying to
- 1:24:59Speaker 7: get to that fifteen wins and sixteen seventeen maybe beyond
- 1:25:03Speaker 7: that and.
- 1:25:04Speaker 8: See what happens.
- 1:25:05Speaker 1: Now we are talking about a guy who has SEC
- 1:25:09Speaker 1: coaching experience. Of course at Texas A and M, he
- 1:25:12Speaker 1: doesn't have, you know, a great wealth of it, but
- 1:25:15Speaker 1: he's got three years over there. And so Schloss was asked, how,
- 1:25:19Speaker 1: in his opinion, have other SEC teams handled that adversity
- 1:25:25Speaker 1: that he just referenced in the second half of the season.
- 1:25:28Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:25:29Speaker 7: I mean I've only been in the league three years,
- 1:25:31Speaker 7: so I'm pretty new to the conference. But but yeah,
- 1:25:35Speaker 7: you just see him. You just got to get off
- 1:25:37Speaker 7: the mat and you respect.
- 1:25:38Speaker 8: What it is.
- 1:25:39Speaker 7: And truly, like I heard Tim Gorban, the coachy Vanderbilt
- 1:25:43Speaker 7: has been in the league for over twenty years, say
- 1:25:45Speaker 7: one time at the end of the conference tournament, he's like,
- 1:25:47Speaker 7: I don't care what regional we're in. Put me in
- 1:25:50Speaker 7: the American League East. I just don't want to play
- 1:25:52Speaker 7: any SEC teams anymore. And that it really does. It
- 1:25:56Speaker 7: really is that way, you know, to where you're like,
- 1:25:59Speaker 7: hey man, really the I would love to win conference championship.
- 1:26:02Speaker 7: That's awesome, but that doesn't get you to Omaha. It
- 1:26:05Speaker 7: puts you in a regional. It might get you a
- 1:26:06Speaker 7: good seed, but you've got to get in a regional
- 1:26:09Speaker 7: and then you see what happens and we've all seen,
- 1:26:11Speaker 7: you know, we've all seen plenty of teams that aren't
- 1:26:13Speaker 7: highly seeded get to Omahall or even win a national
- 1:26:16Speaker 7: title like Oh Miss. So that's the goal is we
- 1:26:19Speaker 7: just have to We've got to get to that point
- 1:26:21Speaker 7: of the year, hopefully get in a regional, have our
- 1:26:23Speaker 7: team healthy, maybe we get some of those guys back,
- 1:26:26Speaker 7: and then play our best baseball.
- 1:26:28Speaker 1: Any coach will tell you that it's the sum of
- 1:26:30Speaker 1: the parts that make the team that makes for winning.
- 1:26:35Speaker 1: That one guy doesn't do it all, or two guys
- 1:26:39Speaker 1: don't do it all, It is the sum of the
- 1:26:41Speaker 1: parts overall. That said, you've heard Slash talk about how
- 1:26:48Speaker 1: the best players he's had, the ones who've had to
- 1:26:50Speaker 1: fight through the injuries, are the ones that they're looking
- 1:26:52Speaker 1: forward to continue to lead the way. So, in Jim
- 1:26:55Speaker 1: Slasnagel's mind, has there been a team MVP to this
- 1:26:59Speaker 1: point in the.
- 1:27:01Speaker 7: I mean be hard not to say, you know, Spencer
- 1:27:05Speaker 7: or Galvan, I mean Galvan. There's never been a good
- 1:27:09Speaker 7: baseball team without a good catcher, and there's never been
- 1:27:11Speaker 7: a great baseball team without a great catcher. So you know,
- 1:27:15Speaker 7: two of the best I mean, I've had. We've had
- 1:27:17Speaker 7: some really good coat, really good catchers at different places
- 1:27:21Speaker 7: I've been, but there's two that really separate themselves. And
- 1:27:24Speaker 7: one's Brian Holliday from TCU, one of the greatest pure
- 1:27:28Speaker 7: leaders and catchers that I've ever been around, played in
- 1:27:31Speaker 7: the big leagues. And then Galvan is right there, right
- 1:27:35Speaker 7: there with him right now, and we will see how
- 1:27:37Speaker 7: it plays out, but Galvan's right there with him. Had
- 1:27:39Speaker 7: a kid named Troy Claunch at A and M who
- 1:27:42Speaker 7: was elite. Jackson Appel was that kind of player. But Galvan,
- 1:27:46Speaker 7: especially here and who he is and how he's handled
- 1:27:48Speaker 7: himself and how he's handled the pitching staff, I'd have
- 1:27:51Speaker 7: to pick him well.
- 1:27:52Speaker 1: In talking about Galvon, I mean, what a season he's been.
- 1:27:56Speaker 1: He started off the season at number nine in the
- 1:27:58Speaker 1: batting order, and he just slowly worked his way up
- 1:28:01Speaker 1: toward he's batting second in the lineup, and right now
- 1:28:05Speaker 1: he's hitting three thirty seven with eleven homers and thirty
- 1:28:09Speaker 1: two runs battered. On He's leading the Long Horns in
- 1:28:12Speaker 1: batting average in SEC play. Galvan is hitting three seventy
- 1:28:17Speaker 1: in conference play, with six of his eleven homers and
- 1:28:23Speaker 1: twelve of his thirty two RBIs coming in SEC games.
- 1:28:27Speaker 2: So what change?
- 1:28:28Speaker 1: Why has Galvan's approach been different in what has worked
- 1:28:32Speaker 1: for him?
- 1:28:33Speaker 7: Yeah, I mean he had after his third at BET,
- 1:28:35Speaker 7: I think he saw twenty six pitches. So I think
- 1:28:39Speaker 7: that starts with removing the fear of striking out, and
- 1:28:42Speaker 7: that's why we you know, I believe that that's the
- 1:28:45Speaker 7: first thing you have to remove from a player. And now,
- 1:28:47Speaker 7: if you're a coach who doesn't you just can't stand
- 1:28:50Speaker 7: strikeouts and just wants the ball put in play, that's
- 1:28:52Speaker 7: okay too, But for us, it's it's it's removing the
- 1:28:57Speaker 7: fear of the strikeout. Understanding you can do damage with
- 1:29:00Speaker 7: two strikes just as much as you can with less
- 1:29:02Speaker 7: than two, and so when you're not in a when
- 1:29:06Speaker 7: you're not in a hurry to hit, then you can get.
- 1:29:09Speaker 8: Pitches to hit.
- 1:29:10Speaker 7: And then he's put himself in a physical position with
- 1:29:12Speaker 7: his work with Troy to allow himself to be on
- 1:29:16Speaker 7: time for fastballs and adjust to off speed pitches and
- 1:29:19Speaker 7: he'll swing through a pitch, but he doesn't panic. And
- 1:29:21Speaker 7: I think in years past he was so panicky about
- 1:29:27Speaker 7: striking out and not seeing the breaking pitches to where
- 1:29:31Speaker 7: he would get his bats over quick and now he
- 1:29:33Speaker 7: understands if he strikes out, he strikes out and move on.
- 1:29:35Speaker 8: To the next one.
- 1:29:36Speaker 1: Yeah, so there's that. And you heard him mention Troy
- 1:29:40Speaker 1: a Troy. Of course he's talking about too Low. Troy Tulowitzki,
- 1:29:43Speaker 1: who was on David Pierce's staff, was a great addition.
- 1:29:47Speaker 1: You could just see how the players gravitated to him.
- 1:29:50Speaker 1: Remember just vividly in Greenville at the super Regional on
- 1:29:54Speaker 1: twenty twenty one, how in the just in the hotel
- 1:29:57Speaker 1: lobby where all the guys would just gather around him
- 1:29:59Speaker 1: with list into Tuloh and all this sort of stuff.
- 1:30:01Speaker 1: And Tula was bound for leaving after the coaching staff
- 1:30:06Speaker 1: had had been dismissed at Texas, but he came back
- 1:30:11Speaker 1: and Selas Stageles was asked how that whole process worked
- 1:30:15Speaker 1: where too Low ended up returning to Texas.
- 1:30:18Speaker 7: Yeah, so first got here, got in the office, after
- 1:30:22Speaker 7: all the you know stuff that went on, Troy was here.
- 1:30:27Speaker 7: Obviously we're going thousand miles a minute recruiting and trying
- 1:30:30Speaker 7: to get settled in and get things get players here,
- 1:30:33Speaker 7: and had a chance to sit down with Troy for
- 1:30:35Speaker 7: a couple of hours and just say I just want
- 1:30:37Speaker 7: to get to know you, you know, and at you know,
- 1:30:39Speaker 7: I said, at this time, you know, at that time,
- 1:30:42Speaker 7: we had you know, Mike was here, and and we
- 1:30:45Speaker 7: had two other staff members coming, Chuck Box and another
- 1:30:49Speaker 7: guy on the A and M staff, and then and Troy,
- 1:30:52Speaker 7: you know, he obviously wanted to stay, and I think
- 1:30:54Speaker 7: he he he had other options too, and I respected
- 1:30:56Speaker 7: that and had nothing to do with who I thought
- 1:30:59Speaker 7: was the better coach or not. It was about loyalty
- 1:31:02Speaker 7: to to the coaches from me, you know, from from
- 1:31:05Speaker 7: A and M that wanted to come and uh, and
- 1:31:08Speaker 7: so I didn't. I wasn't gonna leave any of those
- 1:31:11Speaker 7: guys without a job. And then I said, you know,
- 1:31:14Speaker 7: let's just sit tight and see what happens here the
- 1:31:16Speaker 7: next couple of days. And and then things started to
- 1:31:19Speaker 7: you know, move in Mike's way, uh at A and M.
- 1:31:22Speaker 7: And and then I got the phone call on that
- 1:31:25Speaker 7: Saturday morning and we were I was at a head
- 1:31:29Speaker 7: coach's retreat, uh with del Conteent and all this, all
- 1:31:32Speaker 7: the other coaches and had to duck out of that
- 1:31:35Speaker 7: thing and said, hey man, I gotta go hire a
- 1:31:37Speaker 7: coach and so I had Nolan Kane and meet me
- 1:31:42Speaker 7: out at Troy's house, and uh we talked for several
- 1:31:45Speaker 7: hours and it wasn't about necessarily about baseball. The baseball
- 1:31:48Speaker 7: is the thing I was concerned with the least. It
- 1:31:50Speaker 7: was more about, Hey, this is what our program will
- 1:31:54Speaker 7: look this is what working in the hour program will
- 1:31:56Speaker 7: look like from a recruiting standpoint, from a time investment
- 1:31:59Speaker 7: from recruiting weekends and football weekends and how long those
- 1:32:03Speaker 7: are from the time the recruit show up on Friday
- 1:32:05Speaker 7: to leave on Sunday. And he's got a young family
- 1:32:07Speaker 7: and a super talented young son who's a great player
- 1:32:10Speaker 7: that he wants to see play. And so it just
- 1:32:13Speaker 7: kind of I wanted to meet his wife, wanted her
- 1:32:14Speaker 7: have you you, wanted to make sure it's a good,
- 1:32:17Speaker 7: good relationship, like you know, these are people you see
- 1:32:20Speaker 7: every day more than your family. So we had those
- 1:32:24Speaker 7: conversations and gave him some time to think about it,
- 1:32:26Speaker 7: and then he called within an hour or so and
- 1:32:29Speaker 7: set them all in and we rolled from there. So
- 1:32:32Speaker 7: it's a you know, everything in life happens for you,
- 1:32:35Speaker 7: not to you, so you know, it's worked out great,
- 1:32:37Speaker 7: worked out great for Mike uh and Will Fox, Who've
- 1:32:40Speaker 7: got to promote it over there to be a coach,
- 1:32:43Speaker 7: And uh, it's worked out great for us.
- 1:32:44Speaker 8: I couldn't imagine it being any better.
- 1:32:46Speaker 2: Yeah, worked out really really well.
- 1:32:47Speaker 1: Okay, So then the final thing is what is the
- 1:32:50Speaker 1: most impressive thing that Jim Slavsnagle finds in Troy Kilowitzki.
- 1:32:56Speaker 7: Yeah, passion for the game, passion for teaching, passion for
- 1:33:01Speaker 7: truly wanting to be a coach. Right, there's so there's
- 1:33:04Speaker 7: very very few, very I mean you can count them
- 1:33:08Speaker 7: on one hand in my opinion, the guys who have
- 1:33:11Speaker 7: been successful, not just major league players, but successful major
- 1:33:15Speaker 7: league players and come back to college baseball. Most of
- 1:33:19Speaker 7: most of those guys want to hit a fungo and
- 1:33:21Speaker 7: play golf in the morning, and at least they used to. Uh,
- 1:33:24Speaker 7: there's more now that are invested because they well, number one,
- 1:33:28Speaker 7: you can make good money and college baseball now, I
- 1:33:31Speaker 7: think they're attracted to that. But Kirk Sarlos was a
- 1:33:34Speaker 7: great one, did a great job for us at TCU,
- 1:33:37Speaker 7: and now he's done an awesome job at as the
- 1:33:38Speaker 7: head coach at TCU, and and Troy's right, I mean,
- 1:33:41Speaker 7: Troy was here you know, he was here really late
- 1:33:44Speaker 7: last night working both with his son and a few
- 1:33:47Speaker 7: and a few of the guys that that wanted some
- 1:33:49Speaker 7: extra help. And he's he's he's he's here as much
- 1:33:52Speaker 7: more than anybody else in our on our staff.
- 1:33:55Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:33:55Speaker 1: So the coaching staff has congealed nicely and it's it's
- 1:33:59Speaker 1: a big part of why this team has won thirty
- 1:34:00Speaker 1: of its first thirty five ball games under Jim Schlosnagel.
- 1:34:04Speaker 1: Coming up, we'll hear from one of the guys who
- 1:34:07Speaker 1: hasn't received the greatest amount of tension.
- 1:34:09Speaker 2: He's not a front line guy.
- 1:34:11Speaker 1: In terms of what his role is in terms of
- 1:34:15Speaker 1: what he's has to perform, but he has performed it
- 1:34:17Speaker 1: really well. That's next when we continue on thirteen under
- 1:34:20Speaker 1: the Zone.
- 1:34:24Speaker 6: Back to the Craig Way Show, connect with Craig through
- 1:34:27Speaker 6: the text line by text Team Texas to eight one
- 1:34:30Speaker 6: five three zero, followed by your message. Standard message and
- 1:34:34Speaker 6: data rates may apply.
- 1:34:40Speaker 1: Now, let's see on this Thursday afternoon, Adrian Rodriguez in
- 1:34:44Speaker 1: with that first group, Tady taking batting practice of course
- 1:34:47Speaker 1: from the left side right now. Yep, good solid rip
- 1:34:51Speaker 1: out there to right field for a rod who.
- 1:34:57Speaker 2: Will be playing.
- 1:34:58Speaker 1: We have not received the lineup chat, but I would
- 1:35:01Speaker 1: imagine we'll see him either at second base or in
- 1:35:04Speaker 1: left field to night for Texas, one or the other
- 1:35:08Speaker 1: in the lineup, and I would imagine that we will
- 1:35:11Speaker 1: probably see Ethan Mendoza back in the lineup and playing
- 1:35:18Speaker 1: as the DH, because that shoulder is not allowing him
- 1:35:22Speaker 1: at least not at the moment to be able to
- 1:35:24Speaker 1: be back in the field fielding a position, but no
- 1:35:29Speaker 1: trouble swinging a bat. So we'll see la Is Ryland Galvan,
- 1:35:34Speaker 1: the aforementioned Ryland Galvan taking his VP cuts. Right now,
- 1:35:39Speaker 1: Longhorns softball is going on across the street from US
- 1:35:41Speaker 1: at Red and Charlie McCombs Field. They've gone to the
- 1:35:43Speaker 1: bottom of the first and he no score. Texas and
- 1:35:45Speaker 1: lsu key series there for the Longhorns at thirty.
- 1:35:49Speaker 2: Nine and five and a half game behind Texas A and.
- 1:35:51Speaker 1: M for first place in the SEC standings and one
- 1:35:57Speaker 1: full game in front of Oklahoma, who is in third place.
- 1:36:01Speaker 2: So we'll keep you up dated on that.
- 1:36:03Speaker 1: But back to baseball and one guy we said that
- 1:36:06Speaker 1: isn't a front line guy in terms of of what
- 1:36:12Speaker 1: his contributions are being asked of. In other words, he's
- 1:36:17Speaker 1: not a Friday night starter, he's not a shutdown closer,
- 1:36:20Speaker 1: but he is a guy who can start a ball game,
- 1:36:23Speaker 1: and he is a guy who can shut you down.
- 1:36:25Speaker 1: That's back Scrubbs, who is five and zero in a
- 1:36:28Speaker 1: one seven to one era and he has not made
- 1:36:32Speaker 1: the start this season. He was a spot midweek starter
- 1:36:35Speaker 1: last year, and he had been a Friday night starter
- 1:36:38Speaker 1: for Texas before and he has four saves this year.
- 1:36:41Speaker 1: He's a guy who's just kind of gone along and
- 1:36:44Speaker 1: done what was asked him.
- 1:36:45Speaker 2: And this was his media availability.
- 1:36:46Speaker 1: With the media yesterday with the long orange right handed
- 1:36:51Speaker 1: from Arlington Martin Max Grubbs.
- 1:36:53Speaker 15: So, Texas balling the champion is that?
- 1:36:55Speaker 9: That's the one thing. That's the one thing I need
- 1:36:57Speaker 9: to ask. What's that?
- 1:36:59Speaker 11: We had a competition in the fall, We had I
- 1:37:02Speaker 11: think like six different teams.
- 1:37:04Speaker 9: Just led my team to victory. It's all I can say.
- 1:37:06Speaker 9: Got the shirt?
- 1:37:07Speaker 15: Alright, sir.
- 1:37:08Speaker 9: You can get close to three hundred or not even close.
- 1:37:11Speaker 9: Anybody notably bad.
- 1:37:14Speaker 11: Kimball Schustler and Jared Spencer Jared Spencer unbelievably bad, but
- 1:37:19Speaker 11: good pitchers.
- 1:37:19Speaker 15: So it's okay.
- 1:37:21Speaker 11: Yes, bumpers, No bumpers, No bumpers maybe for Spencer.
- 1:37:24Speaker 14: Though, Max, what's impressed you most about.
- 1:37:30Speaker 15: The pitching staff?
- 1:37:31Speaker 11: I think our ability to recommit and just make every
- 1:37:34Speaker 11: day our opening day, you know, like we don't stack
- 1:37:37Speaker 11: days on top of each other. There's no there's no
- 1:37:39Speaker 11: past bad outing, there's no looking forward to the future.
- 1:37:42Speaker 9: It's all you have is today.
- 1:37:44Speaker 12: Who talks about maximin hers so much, but what about
- 1:37:47Speaker 12: him as a coach makes him as successful as.
- 1:37:50Speaker 11: He's been, Just his mental aspect of the game and
- 1:37:53Speaker 11: what he brings to life on and off the field.
- 1:37:55Speaker 9: Just allowing us to recommit and make every day our
- 1:37:58Speaker 9: opening day.
- 1:37:58Speaker 11: It's it's it's always fresh with him, It's always new,
- 1:38:02Speaker 11: and it's always exciting.
- 1:38:03Speaker 15: You had a.
- 1:38:04Speaker 19: Couple guys this past week and that had like either
- 1:38:06Speaker 19: pitched ones an SEC player not at all and came
- 1:38:08Speaker 19: in and were there for multiple innings and we're really impressive.
- 1:38:11Speaker 19: What impress you most, whether it's Thomas or Sonier that
- 1:38:14Speaker 19: this weekend about what they were able to.
- 1:38:15Speaker 11: Do and d like them too, Yeah, I mean definitely
- 1:38:18Speaker 11: just like impressed and proud of those guys. You know
- 1:38:20Speaker 11: that I know they can do it up a mental season.
- 1:38:22Speaker 11: They can do it, and I think that's most important
- 1:38:24Speaker 11: is that they knew they could do it. You know,
- 1:38:26Speaker 11: they had that belief in their in their minds and
- 1:38:28Speaker 11: everybody had that belief in them.
- 1:38:29Speaker 9: Is that they could do it, and you know they
- 1:38:31Speaker 9: went and did it.
- 1:38:33Speaker 18: There are certain mentality to have as a reliever, knowing
- 1:38:36Speaker 18: that hey, maybe asked to go three four innings or
- 1:38:40Speaker 18: you know, pitch pitch along as opposed to just give
- 1:38:42Speaker 18: in one or two outs.
- 1:38:44Speaker 11: I'd say there is some mentality difference between a starter
- 1:38:47Speaker 11: and a reliever. But at the same time, it's one,
- 1:38:49Speaker 11: you know, just one pitch at a time. You're just
- 1:38:51Speaker 11: recommitting to another pitch. You're not thinking about the next
- 1:38:54Speaker 11: inning or the you know, the next out. You're just
- 1:38:56Speaker 11: making you out pitch one at a time and then
- 1:38:58Speaker 11: recommitting to the next You.
- 1:38:59Speaker 18: Guys, sorry, go ahead, go ahead.
- 1:39:03Speaker 19: You guys were a confident group earlier this season, but
- 1:39:05Speaker 19: how have you seen that kind of grow with wins
- 1:39:07Speaker 19: and tangible evidence that you guys are the team you
- 1:39:09Speaker 19: thought you were gonna be.
- 1:39:12Speaker 11: Max has always said something great, and you know, it's
- 1:39:14Speaker 11: like we might be ranked the number one team in
- 1:39:16Speaker 11: the country right now. But we've known that since the
- 1:39:18Speaker 11: beginning of the season, regardless off we lose ten games
- 1:39:21Speaker 11: in a row, if we win ten games, or we
- 1:39:22Speaker 11: know in our hearts, in our minds that we are
- 1:39:23Speaker 11: the number one team in the country at the end
- 1:39:25Speaker 11: of the day.
- 1:39:26Speaker 16: So you're in the mind and you get a call
- 1:39:28Speaker 16: and throw pickular pitch or prison you don't like that
- 1:39:30Speaker 16: pitch to throw used to throw it, or.
- 1:39:32Speaker 9: Say no, I don't check off Max.
- 1:39:34Speaker 11: I trust him completely, and at the end of the day,
- 1:39:37Speaker 11: like there's no such thing as a pitch shape or
- 1:39:39Speaker 11: a velocity.
- 1:39:40Speaker 9: It's just a you know, it's just a profile strike.
- 1:39:43Speaker 8: You know.
- 1:39:43Speaker 9: That's all we want is just to get out and.
- 1:39:45Speaker 11: So whatever whatever he calls the things to think that
- 1:39:48Speaker 11: we can get out to, I'll throw it.
- 1:39:50Speaker 14: What are you most proud of in your you know,
- 1:39:53Speaker 14: kind of changing your mindset and your approach.
- 1:39:55Speaker 15: To this year.
- 1:39:57Speaker 11: I'm proud of the team. Like it's not even about me,
- 1:40:00Speaker 11: it's about everybody. I'm just proud of everybody's trusting one
- 1:40:03Speaker 11: another and they're buying to this team.
- 1:40:05Speaker 9: This is something, you know, it's special to me.
- 1:40:07Speaker 11: I think we've got an amazing staff and an amazing
- 1:40:10Speaker 11: pitching staff, everybody.
- 1:40:12Speaker 9: I'm just am proud of. I'm just proud of everybody.
- 1:40:14Speaker 18: Honestly, mat Is obviously y'all or on copy the succeed
- 1:40:19Speaker 18: five weeks in. What's it going to take to still
- 1:40:21Speaker 18: be there five weeks from now?
- 1:40:23Speaker 11: Like I said before, just recommitting to the day by day,
- 1:40:26Speaker 11: you know, taking care of our routines, taking care of
- 1:40:28Speaker 11: our bodies, and just you know, making sure we're ready
- 1:40:30Speaker 11: to go each and every day.
- 1:40:31Speaker 14: At the midpoint of SEC play, you can't vote for yourself.
- 1:40:36Speaker 15: Who would you vote for as MVP?
- 1:40:41Speaker 11: I definitely wouldn't vote for myself, but if our team, I'd.
- 1:40:45Speaker 9: Say Dylan Blantis. I think he's the MVP.
- 1:40:48Speaker 11: I mean, you know, to come in as a freshman
- 1:40:50Speaker 11: and do and to do what he's doing is amazing.
- 1:40:52Speaker 9: I've never seen anything like it. What do you think
- 1:40:54Speaker 9: it is about him that makes him so.
- 1:40:56Speaker 15: Hard to hit?
- 1:40:58Speaker 11: I think he enjoys the game more than anybody. It's
- 1:41:00Speaker 11: not anything special about what he does. It's just he
- 1:41:02Speaker 11: has got a love for the game that I haven't
- 1:41:04Speaker 11: seen before, and I'm really impressed by it.
- 1:41:07Speaker 12: You said the game of the season, Bell's coaches told
- 1:41:09Speaker 12: you to view yourselves or.
- 1:41:11Speaker 15: Something as the.
- 1:41:11Speaker 12: Number one team in the country.
- 1:41:13Speaker 15: But did you expect to beat the.
- 1:41:15Speaker 8: Number one team in the country at some point?
- 1:41:18Speaker 9: I mean, I don't really know.
- 1:41:20Speaker 11: I just think of playing the game one pitcher at
- 1:41:22Speaker 11: a time, and you know, being where my feet are.
- 1:41:25Speaker 11: But like we said, like I knew we could do it.
- 1:41:27Speaker 11: I knew we could be the number one team, and
- 1:41:29Speaker 11: I think we always were, always will be. You know,
- 1:41:31Speaker 11: it doesn't matter what the ranking is. It's just how
- 1:41:33Speaker 11: we treat ourselves, how we talk to ourselves.
- 1:41:35Speaker 12: Have y'all had any extra conversations this week about, you know,
- 1:41:38Speaker 12: maybe some of the pressure of the weight that comes
- 1:41:40Speaker 12: with being number one.
- 1:41:42Speaker 11: I mean there's always a target on your back when
- 1:41:43Speaker 11: you're here at the University of Texas. I mean it's
- 1:41:45Speaker 11: the greatest, the greatest school in the country, so there
- 1:41:48Speaker 11: is pressure, but it's nothing we've never felt before.
- 1:41:52Speaker 16: You mentioned that the web just has this love for
- 1:41:54Speaker 16: the game you've never seen before. How does that play
- 1:41:56Speaker 16: out on the field, How does a play.
- 1:41:57Speaker 11: On more I think it's just confidence in himself. But
- 1:42:01Speaker 11: at the same time, he's not even thinking about it.
- 1:42:03Speaker 11: He just is going out there and having fun. Doing
- 1:42:06Speaker 11: what he does, wouldn't a couple more what.
- 1:42:11Speaker 14: Stands out about Gasparino and maybe some of the you know,
- 1:42:15Speaker 14: progress he's made this year.
- 1:42:17Speaker 9: I mean, I think Gasparino is a great player.
- 1:42:20Speaker 11: He's obviously, you know, one of the leaders on our team,
- 1:42:22Speaker 11: Barry Toolsy, just an all around good guy. And you know,
- 1:42:25Speaker 11: it's just his progress to me is you know, it's
- 1:42:29Speaker 11: just Gasparino, Like that's all I can say. He works hard,
- 1:42:32Speaker 11: and you know, I think he plays the game the
- 1:42:34Speaker 11: right way.
- 1:42:34Speaker 14: So and Shustler has moved to first and how well
- 1:42:40Speaker 14: he's you know, fielding that position, and you know, just
- 1:42:44Speaker 14: your thoughts on his impact.
- 1:42:46Speaker 11: I mean, Shoester will play anywhere. He's stick him, he
- 1:42:48Speaker 11: always says, put him on the mountain too. He'd love
- 1:42:50Speaker 11: to pitch, but I'll just tell him, you just played
- 1:42:52Speaker 11: first base. Keep doing your thing.
- 1:42:54Speaker 9: But he's a he's a roughneck, that's what we call it.
- 1:42:57Speaker 1: That's a good way to describe him, for sure. Long
- 1:43:00Speaker 1: Oorne taken batting practice on the field here before they
- 1:43:04Speaker 1: get ready for this game tonight. Again, Solvern, We always
