Latest / DUH It Down / DUH Goes Dorm Daze: Part One – Welcome to Billingsley
Transcript
- 0:21SPEAKER_00: Tonight, Duh It Down celebrates a cinematic achievement that makes those Hollywood masterpieces look like amateur hour.
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: A trilogy so outrageous, so ridiculous, and so completely unnecessary, they couldn't even keep the same name for all three movies.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: That's right.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: We're talking about dorm days, dorm days two in Transylvania.
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: And joining Todd Vale and Lummox is a man who actually survived all three films.
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: Actor Tony Denman.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: In part one, we revisit the original dorm days, where two women named Dominique, a missing thirty thousand dollars, and a dorm full of hormonally challenged college students create absolute chaos.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: But first, Lummox delivers another critically important Hardees update that absolutely nobody asked for.
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: So grab your popcorn, lower your expectations, and prepare for a journey through one of Hollywood's most questionably influential movie sagas.
- 1:17SPEAKER_00: Welcome to Die It Down.
- 1:19SPEAKER_01: Donation, welcome back.
- 1:21SPEAKER_01: Another week, another exciting episode.
- 1:23SPEAKER_01: We've got some really cool things here for you this evening, like we always do.
- 1:28SPEAKER_01: You know what to expect from Die It Down.
- 1:30SPEAKER_01: Before we get started, I do have one update I need to I need to provide.
- 1:36SPEAKER_01: I know in a previous episode we talked about a fast food item that I had never seen before in my life, and that was a baloney, a fried bologna biscuit from the Hardeys.
- 1:51SPEAKER_01: I didn't have an opportunity to try one the first time because it caught me off guard as I was going by the Hardy's at you know, Mach 2.
- 1:58SPEAKER_01: But I did I did catch it.
- 2:00SPEAKER_01: So I went past the Hardy's this morning in Virginia.
- 2:04SPEAKER_01: I knew where it was, and I said, okay, I've got to try the fried bologna biscuit and get and get and report back to donation.
- 2:13SPEAKER_01: So I ordered it, and the first thing I noticed was that the bag was extremely heavy.
- 2:18SPEAKER_01: It felt like it had a brick in there.
- 2:20SPEAKER_01: So I had the I had the two for five.
- 2:22SPEAKER_01: So I knew there were two biscuits in there, and hopefully that was it.
- 2:26SPEAKER_01: But the bag was heavy as shit.
- 2:28SPEAKER_01: So I get the bag, I open it up, and I'm holding one of the biscuits in my hand, and I'm not I'm not lying, this thing is heavy as shit.
- 2:34SPEAKER_01: I open up the wrapper and I examine it, and it's just a biscuit and one slice of fried bologna.
- 2:41SPEAKER_01: And I'm trying to figure out why it weighs so much, and then it dawns on me.
- 2:45SPEAKER_01: There's 10 gallons of grease in the biscuit.
- 2:49SPEAKER_01: If I had squeezed the biscuit like a sponge, grease would have gone all over my car.
- 2:57SPEAKER_01: I I ate it, I put it down, I will never eat it again.
- 3:01SPEAKER_01: The only way I can recommend eating the fried bologna biscuit is to go to Hardy's, get the combo, get two of them for$5, then drive to McDonald's, throw the Hardy's biscuit away, and order the bake, order bacon, egg, and cheese biscuit from McDonald's.
- 3:16SPEAKER_01: That's the only way to do it.
- 3:18SPEAKER_01: There you go.
- 3:19SPEAKER_01: There's the update.
- 3:20SPEAKER_01: Not a good breakfast, not a good sandwich.
- 3:23SPEAKER_01: It's extremely greasy, and it's been haunting me all day long every time I burp.
- 3:28SPEAKER_01: So it's just bologna on a biscuit.
- 3:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yes.
- 3:31SPEAKER_01: So I ordered, I maybe I made a mistake.
- 3:34SPEAKER_01: I ordered the two for five.
- 3:35SPEAKER_01: I said, Do you have the two for five fried bologna biscuit special?
- 3:39SPEAKER_01: Yes, we do.
- 3:40SPEAKER_01: I'll take that.
- 3:41SPEAKER_01: I thought because of your trip, that that was the the egg sandwich, like the breakfast egg sandwich.
- 3:47SPEAKER_01: You have to order that differently.
- 3:49SPEAKER_01: So, but I can't imagine slapping a greasy egg on top of 10 gallons of grease with that one slab of fried bologna is gonna make it any better.
- 3:56SPEAKER_01: Maybe somebody out there in Dun Nation will find it appealing.
- 4:00SPEAKER_01: I didn't like it.
- 4:01SPEAKER_01: I'm not having it again.
- 4:03SPEAKER_01: So good job, Lummock.
- 4:05SPEAKER_01: Glad you stopped.
- 4:07SPEAKER_01: So there's my update.
- 4:08SPEAKER_01: Vail Todd, any updates from you before we before we kick this thing off here?
- 4:12SPEAKER_01: Or are we good to go?
- 4:14SPEAKER_03: I do not.
- 4:15SPEAKER_01: No, nothing from the Todd.
- 4:16SPEAKER_01: All right, Vail, you're nothing from you either.
- 4:19SPEAKER_04: Nothing from me, except I have to buy more pumpkin spice eggnog.
- 4:25SPEAKER_01: Yes, yes, you do, since you drink a gat, you drink a whole carton at once.
- 4:30SPEAKER_01: Uh Lord.
- 4:31SPEAKER_01: Well, welcome back to the to the show donation.
- 4:34SPEAKER_01: We're gonna kick this off here tonight.
- 4:36SPEAKER_01: We are gonna be talking about movies.
- 4:39SPEAKER_01: You know, we do this from time to time if you if you follow the if you follow the show.
- 4:44SPEAKER_01: And throughout history, Hollywood has blessed us with some really good movie trilogies.
- 4:50SPEAKER_01: I mean, you've got Star Wars, you've got the Lord of the Rings, you've got the Jason Bourne trilogy.
- 4:56SPEAKER_01: I watch that anytime it comes on TV.
- 4:58SPEAKER_01: I love those.
- 4:59SPEAKER_01: You've got adventures, unforgettable characters, you know, stories that have influenced generations of moviegoers.
- 5:07SPEAKER_01: But we're not talking about those tonight.
- 5:09SPEAKER_01: We're talking about a different trilogy.
- 5:12SPEAKER_01: We're talking about a movie trilogy that when you watch it, you end up asking yourself one question: How the hell did they get the funding to make three of these?
- 5:22SPEAKER_01: That's right.
- 5:23SPEAKER_01: We are talking about the dorm days trilogy with an asterisk, and in honor of that, we have Tony Denman himself back on the show.
- 5:35SPEAKER_01: Welcome back, Tony.
- 5:36SPEAKER_01: What's up?
- 5:37SPEAKER_01: Whoop whoop.
- 5:40SPEAKER_01: So in the in the in the dorm days, you were Numar.
- 5:43SPEAKER_01: Is that correct?
- 5:44SPEAKER_01: Right, that was Numar.
- 5:47SPEAKER_05: Yeah, very uh, very original name.
- 5:50SPEAKER_05: Never heard that before.
- 5:54SPEAKER_01: Welcome back to the show.
- 5:55SPEAKER_01: We're glad to have you back.
- 5:57SPEAKER_01: Glad we didn't scare you off from your your season one performance.
- 6:01SPEAKER_05: Right, yeah, happy to be back.
- 6:03SPEAKER_05: Thanks for having me, guys.
- 6:04SPEAKER_05: Any chance I get to uh talk about myself, I'm always available.
- 6:08SPEAKER_03: So I love it.
- 6:11SPEAKER_03: There, there that's Hollywood for you right there.
- 6:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah, there it is.
- 6:15SPEAKER_01: Well, well, and I in honor of that, you know, we do we like to kick the shows off with a beverage.
- 6:19SPEAKER_01: So, how about we make you do the beverage, Sony?
- 6:22SPEAKER_05: Hey, tonight I'm gonna be drinking.
- 6:24SPEAKER_05: I thought I'd bring it back to kind of my college days, you know, my college dorm days.
- 6:30SPEAKER_05: I've got a hams here.
- 6:31SPEAKER_05: I'm gonna crack it.
- 6:33SPEAKER_05: Oh, yeah.
- 6:34SPEAKER_05: And now I'm gonna drink it.
- 6:38SPEAKER_01: Look at him go.
- 6:40SPEAKER_01: Just like he was a freshman at Billings in Billingsley University.
- 6:44SPEAKER_01: Was that the name of it?
- 6:45SPEAKER_01: That's right.
- 6:46SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 6:47SPEAKER_05: I'm just going method for this one right now.
- 6:50SPEAKER_05: Hold on.
- 6:51SPEAKER_01: The only thing that would make that better was if you would hop on a unicycle and drive around your porch drinking that.
- 6:57SPEAKER_05: You know, I'm so glad you brought the unicycle up.
- 6:59SPEAKER_05: That was by far the hardest thing I've ever had to do learning to ride the unicycle.
- 7:05SPEAKER_04: That was impressive, I gotta say.
- 7:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 7:08SPEAKER_01: Did you learn how to ride it before you went in there, or did you have to learn for the movie?
- 7:13SPEAKER_05: I had to learn.
- 7:14SPEAKER_05: I mean, I don't know if you took a poll about of how many people actually knew how to ride the unicycle.
- 7:19SPEAKER_05: Although, you know, when you're an actor, you have like they used to do this thing like on your resume, you'd have special skills, and like people would just put, you know, like karate or like you know, ice skating, and everyone would put like horse riding when no one knew how to ride a horse.
- 7:36SPEAKER_05: I guarantee that some someone had unicycle on there at some point, and now I could put it on there.
- 7:42SPEAKER_05: I could.
- 7:45SPEAKER_03: Well, to start the start the show off for everyone, dorm days, the opening credits come out, and Mr.
- 7:52SPEAKER_03: Hollywood is on the unicycle riding across campus, and I was impressed right away.
- 7:58SPEAKER_03: I was like, Oh, look at them go.
- 8:00SPEAKER_03: All right.
- 8:01SPEAKER_03: That was really nice.
- 8:07SPEAKER_01: Well, I I thought right away, why did they get a stunt double for Tony in this movie?
- 8:11SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah.
- 8:13SPEAKER_05: Well, they unfortunately couldn't afford a stunt double, so they they actually had me like meet at like a circus clown, but when I got cast in the movie, I had to do like training, I had to like learn how to ride it, and they'd hired a clown to come and like teach me how to ride a unicycle.
- 8:31SPEAKER_05: And uh yeah, it was painful.
- 8:33SPEAKER_05: I fell over a lot.
- 8:35SPEAKER_05: I bet.
- 8:37SPEAKER_01: So movie number one in the trilogy is dorm days, and I believe that is you that's supposed to be like your freshman year at the university, and it's you know, pretty much uh a full day of shenanigans that goes on, you know.
- 8:51SPEAKER_01: Failed Todd and myself had shenanigans when we were at school, but I don't think we had any criminals looking for a stash of cash in the dorm, like you guys did.
- 8:59SPEAKER_01: But seems like this was this all one day, like the movie takes place in one day, right?
- 9:04SPEAKER_01: I mean, I know you didn't film it a day, but the the movie was like one crazy day.
- 9:08SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 9:13SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it was all one day, I think.
- 9:16SPEAKER_05: The original title was actually a college sex comedy.
- 9:20SPEAKER_05: That was the unscripted title, which I actually thought was pretty good too.
- 9:26unknown: Hmm.
- 9:28SPEAKER_03: I like movies that are start or start and end in the same day.
- 9:32SPEAKER_03: And this one especially, it was only like a couple hours because I kept showing the clock and the clock was ticking off.
- 9:39SPEAKER_03: But I I do enjoy movies that can they it's hard to do to do a whole movie in one day.
- 9:44SPEAKER_05: Right, yeah, it's like a it's a real movie kind of device too that they use, like the ticking clock, you know, and you can then it creates like heightened drama, I think, as well.
- 9:58SPEAKER_05: Something's gonna happen, and there's a a point that it's all kind of culminating towards.
- 10:04SPEAKER_01: And I I saw on the at least I saw I think like a poster or something for the unrated version.
- 10:09SPEAKER_01: Was that you on the ground kneeling between the girls' legs in that promo poster?
- 10:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, all me.
- 10:17SPEAKER_05: Oh, you actually I had just shaved my head, so I did the movie and then I shaved my head for something else, and then they had the photo shoot, so I'm actually wearing a wig.
- 10:29SPEAKER_05: That's a wig, yeah, yeah, and I'm like like really I'm like really goofily kind of laid down with my like chin resting on my hand with my legs kind of kicking up.
- 10:40SPEAKER_05: Is that the one you're talking about?
- 10:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I'm looking at it right now.
- 10:43SPEAKER_01: You're between her legs, or she's standing over top of you, and you got this, and that you're right, that looks like 100% like a wig now that I look at it.
- 10:50SPEAKER_05: Yes, exactly.
- 10:51SPEAKER_05: Because I kind of had longer hair in the movie or just like a bit of a wop of hair, I suppose.
- 10:58SPEAKER_05: But uh yeah, it's funny that then there's a few different posters for the movie.
- 11:03SPEAKER_05: Um in different countries, they always have different posters and stuff, but this one had a few different ones.
- 11:07SPEAKER_05: And if you look at like movie posters, if you study them, there's only like it's really crazy.
- 11:15SPEAKER_05: And then when you look at this, you kind of go, Holy shit, this is true.
- 11:18SPEAKER_05: There's only like four different types of movie posters.
- 11:22SPEAKER_05: It and like the different types of movies have almost the same types of posters that they have.
- 11:29SPEAKER_05: Like a college comedy, for I know it might sound stupid, but like if you look back at movie posters for college comedies, you'll notice that like the way that they have me with the girl above me like that, it's it's done like tons of different times.
- 11:44SPEAKER_05: Yeah, there's like oh the only like the way they kind of design movie posters, they just keep repeating the same type of thing all the time, which is ridiculous.
- 11:55SPEAKER_03: Yeah, you're front front and center in all those posters.
- 12:00SPEAKER_03: That's right.
- 12:02SPEAKER_05: Hollywood filmogy, yeah.
- 12:05SPEAKER_01: So in the first one, your character, you're you're Numar, you're you're a freshman, and apparently as the movie is is kicking off and you are riding your unicycle through campus with this big grin on your face because the night before you you got to make out with a chick, and all you want to do is get her to eat your sausage.
- 12:25SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I want to get her to eat my French sausage.
- 12:29SPEAKER_05: Yeah, that's my whole motivation for the movie.
- 12:33SPEAKER_01: And that's literal as well, right?
- 12:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, it is.
- 12:37SPEAKER_01: And the best part is we'll get to it later, but when you're with the uh the prostitute and you're just telling her, all I want you to do is eat my sausage.
- 12:47SPEAKER_01: So you also had a you had a pretty good cast in that movie, too.
- 12:50SPEAKER_04: I gotta say, it's a good cast in this one.
- 12:52SPEAKER_01: That was a that was that was a good one.
- 12:53SPEAKER_01: I though the uh the guy Cliff, I know him from you know when at least the version of Cabin Fever that I watched.
- 13:00SPEAKER_01: I don't think he was in your version of Cabin Fever.
- 13:03SPEAKER_05: Yep, yeah, he's uh a super character.
- 13:07SPEAKER_05: Yeah, he's uh one of the most interesting people I've ever met in my whole life.
- 13:13SPEAKER_01: You remember him, Todd, from the from Cabin Fever?
- 13:15SPEAKER_03: Oh, yeah, that was me.
- 13:17SPEAKER_03: You guys made me him.
- 13:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that was that was Todd.
- 13:21SPEAKER_04: That was Todd.
- 13:23SPEAKER_03: Yep, he was in an MI version.
- 13:28SPEAKER_05: Detroit Rock City about ACDC, about like the kids that drive across country to go see like ACDC's last show or something.
- 13:36SPEAKER_05: It was pretty big, pretty big movie.
- 13:38SPEAKER_05: He was in that and he kind of got fame from that movie.
- 13:44SPEAKER_01: You also had the the criminal that was in the movie, the you know, the the shady character that was the you know pseudo gangster.
- 13:52SPEAKER_01: I re I'm I was watching the movie and I'm like, I know this guy from something.
- 13:56SPEAKER_01: It turns out he was in Children of the Corn.
- 13:59SPEAKER_05: Right, yeah.
- 14:00SPEAKER_05: That was that was Malachi from Children of the Corn, or something like that.
- 14:05SPEAKER_05: I don't know.
- 14:06SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah, he was great.
- 14:08SPEAKER_05: He actually was one of the producers on the movie, too.
- 14:10SPEAKER_05: Oh, was he?
- 14:12SPEAKER_01: The Black Hand in the darn days.
- 14:17SPEAKER_01: And then who could forget the great Hambino from Sandlot?
- 14:22SPEAKER_05: Horse Patrick Renna.
- 14:23SPEAKER_05: Yep, and Pat and I ended up just across our time in Hollywood being in like three different productions together.
- 14:30SPEAKER_05: We were in these two movies, and then we did an episode of judging Amy or some weird court show together.
- 14:38SPEAKER_05: But Pat, yeah, he's a good guy.
- 14:39SPEAKER_05: I haven't spoken to him for a while, but interesting, lots of interesting things for sure.
- 14:45SPEAKER_05: And then his brother, his brother in the movie was the Shermanator.
- 14:49SPEAKER_05: Zowen, one of my old buddies.
- 14:52SPEAKER_05: He was my first friend in Los Angeles when I moved there.
- 14:56SPEAKER_05: We had the same manager, and he kind of rose to fame in American Pie as the Shermanator.
- 15:03SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 15:04SPEAKER_05: Under him.
- 15:05SPEAKER_05: Yep.
- 15:05SPEAKER_05: Chris and I I used to stay at his house when I was like 15, and I'd go out to LA.
- 15:10SPEAKER_05: We had the same manager, and we just became really, really good friends.
- 15:13SPEAKER_05: He was in major pain.
- 15:15SPEAKER_05: You guys remember that movie?
- 15:16SPEAKER_05: I do.
- 15:17SPEAKER_05: I do.
- 15:18SPEAKER_01: In fact, I just watched that recently.
- 15:22SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I don't know if it holds up or not.
- 15:24SPEAKER_01: No, it was it, it was still funny as shit.
- 15:27SPEAKER_01: Damon Wayans was still funny as shit, man.
- 15:29SPEAKER_01: That was that's a good one.
- 15:30SPEAKER_01: I I think within like the past five months or so, I watched that.
- 15:34SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and Chris was right in the front of the poster.
- 15:36SPEAKER_05: Like he's leaning down towards them, and Chris is like, he had that big goofy like expression on his face.
- 15:43SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 15:46SPEAKER_01: So I I think I think the best way I could sum up dorm days one is almost, you know, Keystone Cops meets the three stooges, meets the Scooby-Doo mystery.
- 15:56SPEAKER_02: Yes, yes.
- 15:58SPEAKER_01: That that that I was trying to figure out all the things that are going on.
- 16:01SPEAKER_01: So you've got you've obviously got the you know, the the gangster guy trying to track down his money that for some reason got delivered to a college dorm, right?
- 16:10SPEAKER_01: So you've got that, you've got the you know the great Hambino by ordering a prostitute for the Shermanator, their brothers in the movie.
- 16:18SPEAKER_01: You've got you've got this guy, Tony, playing the role of Numar, who's trying to get chicks to eat his sausage, and then you've got the two girls that don't want anything to happen in the dorm.
- 16:30SPEAKER_01: They don't, they're they're they're the big, they're the cock blockers, they don't want anything going on in the dorm.
- 16:34SPEAKER_01: But aren't isn't that they're like doing drugs as well, like you find out at the end you find out that they got like pounds of cocaine in their room or something, and and then you've got uh the boyfriend and girlfriend duo where he just can't, it's almost like a threes company routine.
- 16:50SPEAKER_01: He can't do anything right, he's rehearsing a play, and it just gets him into more and more trouble, and they think he's cheating on him, having babies behind his back and stuff, and all this is round together in you know, one episode.
- 17:01SPEAKER_01: And then you've got who is it, the other cliff character who comes out of nowhere who pretends he can't talk, and he's just he just hangs out in the background and drinks and makes fun of people.
- 17:12SPEAKER_05: Yep.
- 17:13SPEAKER_05: Yeah, the uh the writers in their slapstick keystone cops Scooby-Doo way or trying to mimic kind of a Shakespearean what's the what's the Shakespeare mid the summer?
- 17:27SPEAKER_05: What the hell is it called?
- 17:28SPEAKER_05: Midsummer's nightsummer's night eve dream Eve, is that what it is?
- 17:33SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I can't believe I can't remember it.
- 17:35SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it's kind of like that type of thing where there's so many different things happening, so many different storylines overlapping and just complete like slapstick, miscommunication, and every sex, yeah, and and a little bit of and a little bit of sex.
- 17:54SPEAKER_03: Right, yeah, not as much as the next one, but yes.
- 17:57SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah.
- 17:57SPEAKER_01: We'll we'll we'll get we'll get into part two here in a little bit where they where they definitely up the bigger budget for sex on that one.
- 18:04SPEAKER_05: Yes.
- 18:05SPEAKER_05: Well, you always gotta kind of up the ante.
- 18:09SPEAKER_03: They had they had money for boobs for that one, yeah.
- 18:12SPEAKER_05: Oh yeah.
- 18:14SPEAKER_01: Did you like it?
- 18:17SPEAKER_01: Um the boobs?
- 18:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 18:19SPEAKER_01: Well, did you what do you think of this movie?
- 18:21SPEAKER_01: So I I so out of the two out of the two, and we'll get to we'll get to the third later, but out of the two, Dorm Days One and Dorm Days two, I like two better, but I I I laughed.
- 18:30SPEAKER_01: I I enjoyed, I like I like stupid movies like that, right?
- 18:33SPEAKER_01: It's just just just crazy shit.
- 18:36SPEAKER_01: I I enjoyed it.
- 18:37SPEAKER_01: I like to hear a discriminator talk about I'm gonna give her my special gift.
- 18:42SPEAKER_01: Yes, his brother slaps him and says, 'You stop calling you that.' And and you being totally serious, go, I got sausage and crackers for Adrian.
- 18:52SPEAKER_01: And then it's because she's French.
- 18:54SPEAKER_03: Yeah a French sausage.
- 18:58SPEAKER_01: And then, and then, of course, you know, when when the hooker shows up and you're in the room with her, and you're talking and she's she's she's you know, trying to have sex with you, and you're trying to get her to eat your sausage, literally.
- 19:10SPEAKER_01: And you're like, Where would you like to put it?
- 19:11SPEAKER_01: She goes, I could you could put it anywhere you want, including my ass.
- 19:14SPEAKER_01: And you're like, Why would I put my sausage in your ass?
- 19:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 19:20SPEAKER_05: I think I think if I remember right, I think she's the foreign exchange student.
- 19:26SPEAKER_01: She's pretending to be.
- 19:27SPEAKER_05: Oh, is that what I'm saying?
- 19:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, because because both both the foreign exchange student and the prostitute are both Dominique.
- 19:35SPEAKER_01: That's right.
- 19:36SPEAKER_01: They they're both Dominique, but she she she's pretending to be it.
- 19:40SPEAKER_01: That's how she that's how she gets into the dorm.
- 19:42SPEAKER_01: She's pretending to be it.
- 19:43SPEAKER_01: And then if somebody mistakes her for it, and she just plays along.
- 19:48SPEAKER_01: She plays along, and you know, your your girl Adrian is giving you the cold shoulder and hiding from you, and you just you're trying to share your sausage with somebody, and you know, you end up in the room with with the Dominique the prostitute, and then when she says, Well, you have to pay first, you're like, I'm not paying you to eat my sausage.
- 20:13SPEAKER_01: Great scene.
- 20:14SPEAKER_01: And then he goes in.
- 20:16SPEAKER_01: Oh, you'll love this.
- 20:17SPEAKER_01: So he goes, Sheesh, the French.
- 20:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I thought about you when he said they didn't pull out the sheesh.
- 20:25SPEAKER_05: Yeah, that was kind of my calling card.
- 20:27SPEAKER_05: That was my catchphrase.
- 20:28SPEAKER_05: Sheesh, sheesh.
- 20:29SPEAKER_03: How many takes do you think that took to do that scene?
- 20:34SPEAKER_05: That particular one.
- 20:35SPEAKER_05: We shot a ton of different.
- 20:37SPEAKER_05: If you remember, they did like some like funny, kind of weird camera angles in that scene, and then I kind of like mugged the camera as well.
- 20:44SPEAKER_05: So that scene specifically was overshot, like not in a bad way, but there was more setups to it than like a traditional kind of just like coverage and then like close-ups.
- 20:56SPEAKER_05: Uh we did a lot of take for that scene.
- 20:59SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 21:00SPEAKER_05: And it's hard, you know, when you've done already the scene like 16 times, and you're like, oh, I still gotta like try and find something new or be funny, you know.
- 21:11SPEAKER_05: I mean, it's it's written funny, but you still gotta bring something to it every time.
- 21:17SPEAKER_03: We gotta bring it.
- 21:20SPEAKER_01: But unfortunately, you didn't get the you didn't get the good scene that the uh the great Hambino got when he was with the prostitute when she she handcuffed him and took her top off.
- 21:28SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 21:30SPEAKER_05: Isn't he a yeah?
- 21:31SPEAKER_01: She takes that's right.
- 21:33SPEAKER_01: She takes the top off and then handcuffs him and takes the cash.
- 21:37SPEAKER_05: Yeah, you don't I think if I remember it right, they shot or it did an insert of the boobs in that.
- 21:45SPEAKER_05: If you watch it again, you'll notice you don't see the head of the girl, you just see the boobs.
- 21:51SPEAKER_05: So we really and then they were like, Oh, we need to like juice this up.
- 21:55SPEAKER_05: There's no no T to the A, you know, there's no tits to.
- 22:00SPEAKER_05: The ass.
- 22:01SPEAKER_05: So they reshot just a quick close-up scene of somebody's boobs and threw it in there.
- 22:07SPEAKER_03: Body double.
- 22:10SPEAKER_03: I saw that and I was like, whoa, that was a body double.
- 22:14SPEAKER_03: I was gonna ask you, was that her boobs?
- 22:16SPEAKER_03: Did you know that for sure?
- 22:17SPEAKER_05: Are those mine?
- 22:18SPEAKER_05: Wait a second.
- 22:20SPEAKER_03: What did I see those correctly?
- 22:27SPEAKER_01: So what were the were there any cra any crazy things that went on when you guys were were filming, like you know, just just crazy shit that happened when everybody was on set?
- 22:36SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I mean that movie uh specifically and kind of all three of them were just uh an insane uh kind of frenzy of young actors who were given probably too much booze and too much free reign to do whatever they wanted during uh the times that we were filming the movie.
- 23:00SPEAKER_05: They'd like rented the first one, it was filmed actually at the same soundstage that the Power Rangers was filmed at.
- 23:09SPEAKER_05: So the whole dorm is actually filmed in a soundstage.
- 23:12SPEAKER_05: They like uh created the hallways and the bedrooms, their sets, right?
- 23:18SPEAKER_05: And they had a hotel kind of nearby that a lot of us would stay at.
- 23:22SPEAKER_05: But then primarily we'd all just be kind of shoved together in like a wing of this warehouse, the stage for our dressing rooms.
- 23:30SPEAKER_05: And we had a lot of downtime together in between different scenes and setups.
- 23:35SPEAKER_05: They just call everybody there because sometimes the schedule would change and they didn't know like what they were gonna film on that day.
- 23:40SPEAKER_05: Like the scene that I did with the prostitute that was supposed to be filmed like two days from that point, but something happened, somebody couldn't show up or whatever, schedule changed, and they're like, Hey, let's do this scene.
- 23:50SPEAKER_05: Tony and you know, what was her name?
- 23:52SPEAKER_05: Bo or something like that, Dominique are there.
- 23:55SPEAKER_05: Let's just film it.
- 23:56SPEAKER_05: And so you're like, Okay, I guess we're filming this, but we'd all be back in the dressing rooms just hanging out and getting up to mischief, basically.
- 24:05SPEAKER_05: And it kind of doubled on the second one, and then on the third one was even probably a higher octane level of just mischief as well.
- 24:16SPEAKER_05: We filmed in Romania, you know, so we were just getting up to Romanian shenanigans.
- 24:26SPEAKER_04: I was gonna say you had to, you know, because a lot of the same people are in the same movie, like you know, in the whole thing.
- 24:31SPEAKER_04: So I'm sure that you became friends or you know, you guys got closer to each other the more you went along there.
- 24:38SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 24:39SPEAKER_05: Some of us got real close, some of us kind of, you know, there was drama.
- 24:42SPEAKER_05: It was like the whole movie really was the behind the scenes of the movie, I think was probably maybe more interesting or funny.
- 24:51SPEAKER_05: Is there a behind-the-scenes outtake out there?
- 24:54SPEAKER_05: Is so the writers of that movie are actually from Minnesota, two guys named Josh Miller and Patrick Casey, and this was their first movie, really kind of cool story, very Hollywood story.
- 25:08SPEAKER_05: They had they were friends in high school, left Minnesota, moved out to LA together, both had like different, like just norm normie jobs.
- 25:16SPEAKER_05: Pat was working at a uh video store, and every day he'd bring the scripts to the store to work with him that him and Patrick or him and Josh had written.
- 25:27SPEAKER_05: And the directors would frequent that video store.
- 25:31SPEAKER_05: And this is dating the movie, obviously, when video stores were still around.
- 25:34SPEAKER_05: It wasn't a blockbuster, but it was kind of a video update.
- 25:38SPEAKER_05: Just a video store, like like Valley.
- 25:40SPEAKER_05: It was called like Valley Video or something, probably like one of those one-offs.
- 25:45SPEAKER_05: And so Pat just got talking to David, who and the the directors are two brothers, the Hillen Brand brothers, who's got talking to him, was like, Hey, I'm a writer, yeah.
- 25:53SPEAKER_05: No, I've got these scripts right here.
- 25:55SPEAKER_05: Handed him like three scripts, and the guy read them and came back and said, Hey, we love this college sex comedy script.
- 26:01SPEAKER_05: We'd like to talk more about it.
- 26:03SPEAKER_05: And then ultimately they made the movie.
- 26:06unknown: Wow.
- 26:07SPEAKER_05: And kind of even cooler are that the writers now have gone on to do very well.
- 26:12SPEAKER_05: They're writing like the Sonic the Hedgehog movies, and they've written Violent Night one and two with David Harbour.
- 26:19SPEAKER_05: It's kind of that's a hitman movie.
- 26:24SPEAKER_05: So they're doing very well.
- 26:25SPEAKER_05: And you know, they just started as like two weirdo film school kids that moved out from Minnesota to LA and met a director at a video store, which is kind of a I like it.
- 26:40SPEAKER_05: Yeah, but you know, I mean, a lot of we I mean, yeah, a lot of stuff happened.
- 26:46SPEAKER_05: I don't even know where to begin to think about starting to talk about different stories and whatnot.
- 26:52SPEAKER_05: But a lot of times we'd just be back in the dressing rooms just like goofing around, you know, as we were basically like college kids.
- 27:00SPEAKER_05: We didn't go to college, but we were having the kind of college fraternity lifestyle in the dressing rooms and just partying.
- 27:07SPEAKER_05: And yeah, probably wasn't if the directors were back there, they probably would not have been like pleased with some of the antics that we're getting that we were getting up to.
- 27:16SPEAKER_05: I mean I can imagine.
- 27:21unknown: Yeah, exactly.
- 27:22SPEAKER_03: I don't want to.
- 27:22SPEAKER_03: So what do you partying and then they go, okay, you gotta go do a scene, and you just had a shot of vodka or something.
- 27:28SPEAKER_05: Oh, there was one scene where I think I had like shot the whole day, and I was just back in the dressing room.
- 27:34SPEAKER_05: I think they were like, Oh, Tony, you're gonna be wrapped.
- 27:36SPEAKER_05: So I went back there and I was like changing, and you know, there was like a bar back there, and so I was drinking, and then I after a few of just hanging out, and I go, Oh, hey, we want to get one more scene with the unicycle of you.
- 27:50SPEAKER_05: And in the movie, it's kind of an earlier scene.
- 27:52SPEAKER_05: It's kind of right after I've been doing the opening montage, and I come in and I'm like unicycling in the dorm like lobby, and I kind of go down the lobby and I take this corner and I go up to like where the stairs are and I bite it, like I bite it bad, like I fall back.
- 28:08SPEAKER_05: And it was a real fall because I had been I'd been, you know, loosening letting my hair down a little bit before that.
- 28:16SPEAKER_05: So then when they called me, I was like, Oh god, I don't think I'm gonna be able to ride this unicycle.
- 28:21SPEAKER_05: I had to put on the training.
- 28:27SPEAKER_03: Like not walk in, go down the stairs, or make out broad.
- 28:31SPEAKER_03: You had to ride the unicycle.
- 28:33SPEAKER_05: Maybe we should reshoot this a different time, get up to go for it.
- 28:39SPEAKER_04: So then on the second one, uh so this one you were like in the warehouse.
- 28:44SPEAKER_04: Second one, were you on an actual cruise ship?
- 28:46SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yep, yep.
- 28:48SPEAKER_05: The second one is actually on.
- 28:50SPEAKER_05: We never left.
- 28:52SPEAKER_05: We did do like one day of filming like out at sea, but for the most part, it was all docked, a docked boat.
- 28:59SPEAKER_05: It was called the uh Queen Mary down in Long Beach, and it was essentially like a version of the Titanic, but a little bit smaller.
- 29:08SPEAKER_05: So, and it's kind of a famous boat that's docked down there.
- 29:11SPEAKER_05: You can go and take tours, and it is haunted, it's very haunted.
- 29:15SPEAKER_05: Like if you look it up, they do haunt haunting, haunted tours and stuff like that at Halloween, especially.
- 29:23SPEAKER_05: And uh so we got to stay there on the boat for probably like four weeks.
- 29:28SPEAKER_05: We were there, and the guides of the ship would show us all around, like into the bowels of the of the boat, and into like there was tell us all the stories of like people that had died in different areas and stuff like that, and show us some of the most creepy things that are just abandoned now.
- 29:45SPEAKER_05: Nobody goes down there.
- 29:46SPEAKER_05: There's like an abandoned pool down in the bowels of the boat that like three people died down there, and you go to like a bathroom and it's pitch black, and you can feel something like your hair's just you know, everything's standing on end.
- 30:04SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and it's also maybe because it's just scary and you think it's haunted, but it was yeah, it was terrifying.
- 30:12SPEAKER_01: And then you before we jump full full blown into the uh second one, uh one last thing on the on the first one.
- 30:18SPEAKER_01: Was was the gangster was he originally in the script, or was that something that was added?
- 30:23SPEAKER_01: Because that just seems like something completely out of left field.
- 30:25SPEAKER_01: The uh the whole thing with the the Malachi children of the corn character, and uh, you know, what was it, like Brittany the the snake or something, and you know, the the the$30,000 cash on campus in the handbag.
- 30:38SPEAKER_01: Was that originally part of the script?
- 30:39SPEAKER_05: I think it was like one of those things where they're like, shit, we just need an ending.
- 30:43SPEAKER_05: We need to like just like like crowbar all of this into something, and they're like, uh she's uh you know, an assassin or uh something, and he's you know a bad guy, and they just made some like really kind of like shit up at the very end to kind of make it all seem like very Scooby-Doo, you know.
- 31:04SPEAKER_05: She kind of pulls the mask.
- 31:05SPEAKER_01: Right, and that well, that's where I got it from.
- 31:06SPEAKER_01: She comes out and she rips, she rips her mask off, and she's completely different.
- 31:10SPEAKER_01: But then she sees you and Adrian walking by after you guys finally probably you know make up and decide you're gonna go to Vegas together, and then it goes at the end, it goes the end with a question mark, but we never see what happens with you and Adrian in Vegas.
- 31:23SPEAKER_05: Yeah, we kind of laugh about it because Cameron, the girl who played Adrian, didn't do the second movie, and so we're kind of like, what happened in that moment?
- 31:32SPEAKER_05: You know, did Newmar get away?
- 31:34SPEAKER_05: Did he steal the money and they like killed Adrian or something?
- 31:38SPEAKER_01: Right, because Britney the snake was is hunting you down.
- 31:41SPEAKER_05: She wants her money.
- 31:42SPEAKER_01: We've got that like handbag of money.
- 31:44SPEAKER_01: So you you'll you left us hanging on that one.
- 31:48SPEAKER_01: We needed like a dorm days 1.5.
- 31:50SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah, we need something, or you just kind of leave it up to you know, suspension of disbelief there.
- 31:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we we we can probably get AI to make it.
- 32:01SPEAKER_01: We we'll take it, we'll take just take a picture of of Tony, crop a picture of her, we'll get AI to make a quick video that explains what happens in Vegas, right?
- 32:09SPEAKER_05: But my character Numar, every movie has like a different hot girlfriend.
- 32:13SPEAKER_05: He's like kind of a like lovable nerd, but every movie he's got like a hotter girlfriend every time.
- 32:19SPEAKER_05: And so I don't know, maybe Newmar and Britney the Snake kind of had some sort of love affair.
- 32:23SPEAKER_05: I feel like that would be appropriate.
- 32:25SPEAKER_01: Oh, we could definitely work that into the AI video.
- 32:28SPEAKER_01: We'll that would that we'll definitely do that.
- 32:29SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah.
- 32:30SPEAKER_01: Speaking, you definitely up the Annie in the second one if we're gonna go to that one with your with your with your girl, because now yeah, but you start the movie off with her.
- 32:37SPEAKER_01: I mean, she's she's there with you.
- 32:39SPEAKER_01: It's not like she's just hooking up and dissing you.
- 32:42SPEAKER_01: You actually have her, you know.
- 32:43SPEAKER_01: She that's your girl in the second one, but you still got the unicycle.
- 32:46SPEAKER_01: I was glad to see that you ran right into her on the boat.
- 32:49SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah.
- 32:50SPEAKER_05: I had not written the unicycle for however long it was between those two movies, probably two years or something.
- 32:57SPEAKER_05: And then they said, Yeah, we're gonna throw another scene in there.
- 33:00SPEAKER_05: So go grab the unicycle.
- 33:01SPEAKER_03: And I was like, I have one more question about the first one.
- 33:05SPEAKER_03: Now, hear me out on this one.
- 33:07SPEAKER_03: Do you think dorm days one, the first one, could be a Christmas movie?
- 33:12SPEAKER_03: Now, this takes place in the Christmas.
- 33:15SPEAKER_03: Now, everything that we've talked about on the episode too, could it be a Christmas movie?
- 33:21SPEAKER_03: has to be part of the plot.
- 33:24SPEAKER_03: So, do you think this could be a Christmas movie to everyone?
- 33:28SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I mean, it is because I think they're just about to break up for Christmas holiday.
- 33:33SPEAKER_05: It's like the day before the break, and there's a Christmas tree in it.
- 33:38SPEAKER_05: You know, it's got a lot of die hard qualities to it.
- 33:42SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 33:42SPEAKER_03: Lummix Vale, I shoot it out to you guys because you saw the movie.
- 33:46SPEAKER_03: I say yes, Christmas movie.
- 33:48SPEAKER_04: Ooh, nice lummix.
- 33:49SPEAKER_04: Because again, it takes place there, it's about that.
- 33:52SPEAKER_04: They're going home, what, the next day or the following day, or whatever.
- 33:55SPEAKER_04: But it is it is uh the the setting and you know, works around there.
- 34:01SPEAKER_01: Well, I was I will say that it definitely falls into the right time frame because they ever get ready to go on Christmas break.
- 34:07SPEAKER_01: You have the illegal Christmas tree that's in the dorm that eventually catches on fire.
- 34:12SPEAKER_01: That was that that was a critical piece.
- 34:15SPEAKER_01: You have the two, you know, the two girls that are doing the drugs and doing the cock block, and they're wearing the Christmas hats.
- 34:20SPEAKER_01: So you've got your Christmas decorations, and then you have Adrian who asks, you know, do you think New Moore is gonna forget about over Christmas break?
- 34:27SPEAKER_01: And she says, No way, he's Jewish.
- 34:31SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 34:33SPEAKER_03: Yes, all right.
- 34:34SPEAKER_03: So there you have it.
- 34:35SPEAKER_03: Down nation, dorm days.
- 34:38SPEAKER_03: Add it to your Christmas movies.
- 34:41SPEAKER_01: That's right.
- 34:41SPEAKER_01: So all right, so if we're gonna skip over to number two again, the the dorm days poster or like the uh I will say the the last thing about dorm days one is that it it for you know all of the critique about it, it was it did win an award as the most rented movie that summer that it came out.
- 35:04SPEAKER_05: Really?
- 35:05SPEAKER_05: And I think that kind of somehow got it to the level of its popularity that they thought, oh, we can make more money and do a sequel.
- 35:15SPEAKER_05: So, and that was the reason that they thought, you know, because it's all about the dollars and cents at the end of the day.
- 35:20SPEAKER_05: Right.
- 35:20SPEAKER_05: Yeah, so they shot it for like a million bucks, and I think they made like the profit was like, or the you know, it it grossed like 50 million or something in the end, just through video sales.
- 35:31SPEAKER_01: Well, I mean the the the catch line come come see people try to eat Newmore sausage.
- 35:36SPEAKER_01: I mean that that that alone is gonna get people to rent it non-stop.
- 35:41SPEAKER_03: Exactly.
- 35:42SPEAKER_03: In 2003, it came out.
- 35:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and it was rated R, so I know you like it, Todd.
- 35:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 35:51SPEAKER_00: We are going to take a break at this point before we really dive head first into Dorm Days Part Two.
- 35:57SPEAKER_00: We appreciate Tony taking time to sit down with the guys, uh relive these movies.
- 36:02SPEAKER_00: Be sure to check out part two of this podcast to catch the conclusion of the Dorm Days trilogy.
- 36:08SPEAKER_00: Trust me, your life will never be the same.
