- Greg: What's up, friends? Well, I am back in the driver's seat because apparently David is too cool for the recap shows. And he he inadvertently, I'm assuming, missed his chance to put his name on the line this past weekend while you and I both tripped over ourselves and basically went 500, which I've always heard the analogy that's like kissing your sister. Well, I ain't got a sister, but I can imagine that's not a pleasant thing. But week six is officially in the books, and I think we can officially agree on one thing. College football might have lost its damn mind. I'm not sure what all we just watched this past weekend. The number one team in the nation lost to an unranked rival. The team that started number two in the nation lost at home to UCLA. The dogs went into Tuscaloosa and beat Alabama. And Brian, I hate it, brother, but Florida State gave up nearly 400 yards of rushing offense. At that point, you're not playing defense, you're just providing directions to the end zone. And Louisville didn't just beat Florida State. They spotted on 35, or they spotted them 14 points and then unanswered 35. Let's talk about Texas, though, the number one team in the country, Arch Manning, all that talent, all those five stars. And then the Oklahoma team that we saw that didn't look very good in Athens and hadn't looked very good all year walked into the Red River rivalry and beat them 27-24 on a last second field goal. Arch threw a couple of interceptions, including a pick sixth. Oklahoma had a block punt for a touchdown, and that's what it takes to get upsets. But you know what that tells me, Brian? Doesn't matter how many five stars you recruit, how many five stars you pay to come to your program from another team. If you keep giving the other team the football, you're gonna have problems. Texas was a national championship favorite. And Saturday they spent that whole day giving Oklahoma points like they were running a loyalty rewards program. And guess what, Brian? You and I both had plays on Texas. We liked Texas going into this. Because nothing says whiskey and winners like quietly and confidently giving out a touchdown and a half favorite and then watch them lose outright. And then we got Oregon. That was a debacle. Preseason number two in America. Playing UCLA at home, Brian. They lost 17 to 15. That doesn't even sound like a football score. Oregon turned the ball over seven freaking times. That's like a charity fundraiser they're giving away so much shit. At some point, the equipment managers just started like skipping the process and giving the ball directly to UCLA. Speaking of UCLA, they're undefeated. Did anybody that listens to this show have UCLA being undefeated at this point? If so, you're either lying or you've got access to information that I don't have and I'd like to talk to you. Hit me up after the show. Now let's get to something a little more enjoyable. How about them effing dogs, B Nobles? Went into Tuscaloosa and did the unthinkable. Beat beat Alabama 21 or 20 to 17. Gunner got it done. Dwight Phillips, who I have never been a fan of, ran for a buck twenty and looked like a legitimate SEC running back. And just like that, my dogs are back at number one in the country. But I don't necessarily want to overreact. But I think maybe it's time to start building another statue of Kirby. Actually, this time let's make it two. Let's put one in Tuscaloosa just to make Alabama fans look at him all the time. Speaking of the SEC, Kentucky beat LSU 3534 in overtime by going for two for a second weekend in a row. Apparently, Kentucky has decided that extra points are for cowards. Meanwhile, Texas AM, that vaunted oil money of a program. They scored six points, Brian. Pretty sure you and I can score six points in NCAA football on the PlayStation with the controller upside down. And then I had some money on pit, and Bill Belichick showed us that Bill Belichick can still win football games, Brian. Somebody might want to check on the Patriots. But here's what I love about college football. Brian: Mm-hmm. Greg: Every single week we sit down, we study the matchups, we analyze the numbers, examine the trends, that's mostly all you doing that. And then we consent, can we convince ourselves that we've got something figured out. And then Saturday rolls around and a bunch of 20-year-old kids remind us that we don't know as much as we think we do. But yeah, here we are, back for another week. Time to pour another glass of whiskey, make another round of picks, and yet another opportunity to make bold, confident predictions that could age like fine bourbon, Brian. Or they could age like milk in the back of your truck in July. Either way, we're gonna have some fun. Support yourself something good, settle in, and let's sort through the carnage of week six. B Nobles, I know you hated Friday night for FSU, but I gotta know you loved watching the Gators get smacked down in the swamp. And I kind of think at this point you've become enough of a vicarious dog fan that you probably even enjoy Saturday night a little bit, just knowing how much I was having fun. But other than those three games that I know how you feel, tell me what you saw this weekend that you liked, and tell me what you saw this weekend that you learned if there's anything there. Brian: Well, I'll go to the UCLA game first Oregon seventeen fifteen. I think I put out there I had an Oregon minus ten and a half ticket. I put out there on the show that everything that UCLA has done this year was because of turnovers. I didn't see them getting the turnovers like that against Oregon, but lo and behold they got seven of So that'll always make it hard to get your ten and a half up. Greg: Yeah, I felt good about my UCLA plus eleven and a half going in, but I I wasn't expecting seven turnovers. I just thought they could run the ball well enough to keep it close. Brian: for sure. And then I had like you said, you took Texas minus seven and a half. I had Oklahoma team total under sixteen and a half. I still like that. I mean, Oklahoma's offense is not good. I mean they got twenty seven points, but they got a plot a block punt and a pick six. So what do you do about that? And then Greg: Well, and that's that's where, you know, that essentially and I I hate aga hate to make it sound like sour grapes, but that cost both of us our ticket. 'Cause I'm pretty confident Texas covers that game, not only wins outright, but probably covers without those two big plays. Brian: yeah. And then like you said a minute ago, Will Stein, he's got Kentucky rolling back to back, thirty-five, thirty-four wins on two point conversions. Maybe that's what's happened to Oregon's offense. He's took it down to Kentucky with him, so they're looking pretty good. I w I wrote a note down 'cause it kind of what it is. I know you used to watch some of the college football final back in the day with Lou Holtz and Mark May. They used to do that thing called the ACC Wheel of Destiny. Some things never change, I guess. So Greg: Okay. Brian: 'Cause we had Virginia Tech get beat by Cal. We had Pitt get beat by UNC, we had Duke get beat by Georgia Tech, and Wake Forest is still rolling. So who would have thought it would have been Wake Forest in the driver's seat for that number two spot? Greg: Yeah, I'm just looking forward to when they play North Carolina, if they hadn't played already. I was way off of my North Brian: Yeah, sure, it's good. Greg: Carolina preseason projection. Apparently Bill Belichick knows a little bit more about football than I gave him credit for. Brian: yeah, and then like you mentioned, the three hundred ninety seven yards that Florida State gave up to Louisville. If you talk pay if you take the kneel downs out, they got over four hundred. So Florida State, I mean, Greg: Tell the man. Brian: that's just a a thing that it seems like every the last couple of years under Norvell, if they get punched in the mouth, they just they give up. I mean jump up fourteen to nothing and then go go down and get eat forty four to six in the last thirty nine minutes of the game. Greg: Well, and and you know, y I I'm a big fan of the Louisville's running back. Isaac Brown's a real deal, but you can't give up two big runs like that in one game. Like that just th that guy shouldn't have but two or three runs like that for an entire season and you gave up two in one game. That's just not a that's not okay. And if you can't tackle, you can't win football games. Brian: So yeah, it it was bad. And then Keywine Lacey came back for Old Miss. That's big for them. They put it on Vanderbilt. I mean, he only had seven carries, but they'll I'm sure he'll have a bigger role this weekend when they play Missouri. But Greg: Yeah, I had I had Old Miss Mandy on on one of my side screens, and that was another load where felt like every time I saw the game, Old Miss had the ball and was threatening to score. But Trinidad Chambliss started looking more like Trinidad Chambliss again. And brother, what h I mean, I I don't wanna dwell on it because I'm I'm looking at it as a as a gift from God, but man, what the hell happened to the Gators, brother? Brian: Think that they've gotten figured out. I mean you stop their run game and their offense don't don't go that well. So Greg: Yeah, I I thought it was I thought it might have just been a big kind of an emotional letdown in Como a week ago, but no, the way I mean South Carolina dominated that game. That was not that was not a flute. That was not just because a bunch of weird turnovers or freaky plays. That was just an absolute beatdown. Florida defense had no real answer for Lenora Sellers. And I'm sorry, but Lenora Sellers is not that puzzling of a quiz, in my opinion. And then you're right, with if Florida can't run the ball and Yeah, we we made we made note earlier in the season how good Jaden Ball is, but even the best running backs, if you're not if you're not Barry Sanders, the offensive line's gotta help a little bit. And his offensive line ain't helping none. And that was part of their their potential issues coming into the season was offensive line questions. And that's starting to feel like people have kind of figured that out. Brian: yeah, and then they get rewarded this weekend to go get play a pissed off Texas team in Austin. So I'm looking forward to that. Greg: Well, I will I will be looking for an opportunity to back the Longhorns on that one just 'cause I always enjoy having money against the Gators. Brian: Yeah, that's that's that's probably not gonna do well. And then FSU goes down to Miami this weekend. I think I put out there on the preseason show that I felt like that would be the last game from Mike Norvell. I still feel like that's what's gonna happen. Mario Cristobal, they're coming off a a bye week and they're having their biggest recruiting re weekend of the year down there this weekend, so I think it may Greg: Two. Brian: get sideways quick. Greg: you know th there are mixed feelings about occupying that number one spot, you know, this time of the year, because obviously it doesn't really mean anything. I'm one of those that I I got enough faith in Kirby as the leader of our program to not worry about our guys getting a big head or or not going out there and hunting. But you mentioned Miami brother. That that Miami team is is looking very frightening and and to this point I'm not sure they've really played anybody to test them. but that they have not played anybody that's looked like they've even had a shot at showing them down or competing. So Right now, I I I think two of the best teams in the country were on the field in T Town Saturday night. That was an absolute heavyweight battle. You know, I it was a weird game watching because, you know, I had some money on the over, and that felt like a game where there was just massive amounts of haymakers landed, but they didn't all result in points. Like it felt like big plays were being made all game long, but 20 to 17 in the score didn't really reflect it. Brian: yeah, I had the I had the under fifty-three and a half, so that was never a sweat. I had that good by almost twenty points. Like you said, those two teams, I mean, you got Miami looks good, Notre Dame. We'll see what they got this weekend going to Provo. That ain't an easy place to play. but you those are right now, in my opinion, those are the top two teams in the country. I think we got a good chance to see them again in the SEC championship, maybe even again in the playoffs. So I think they definitely gonna see each other at least one more time this year. Greg: Yeah, I was I was texting with a buddy of mine. I said that's that's the one downside. As much as I enjoyed that victory Saturday night, and and getting a win in Tuscaloosa was obviously special as a fan, but I'm a big believer in that old adage of it's really hard to beat a good team twice, and knowing that there's a decent chance we see them again just makes it a little bit harder pill to swallow because I if it goes all the way to either the SEC championship or if it makes it to the the national championship, I'm okay with. But I'd hope the playoff committee would if if it gets to that point, I'd hope they do some sort of seating situation where they try to put it to where Georgia and Bama don't have to match up till as late as possible. Brian: Yeah, hopefully, you know, it ain't a home game for one of It should be a neutral site, be it be good. yeah, they they look they look good. Both of did. Greg: Well, so we we managed to do something quite incredible is the fact that all three of us on the show went 50-50, and one of the people wasn't even here. so David went zero and zero, which really is no blood drawing. You and I both went seven and seven somehow, and I'm not sure we could have scripted that if we did it on purpose. I I watched a lot of it. I I will admit that it with the Georgia game being as big as it was this weekend, I was pretty singularly locked into that most of the weekend as far as my focus. I didn't watch as much of the other stuff as I normally would. So when I went back over my plays and and calculated the seven and seven, I I I spot checked a little of them. You know, felt good starting off the week. You know, went two and one on the on the Friday night threesome. Got the Wyoming win outright, got the Iowa win outright. the the Georgia Obama game, you know, I I told everybody on there ago, I wouldn't play that officially. I played it because of the show. And and having said that, I was always gonna take the home team and the over just because those offenses can be really, really explosive. but other than that, you like I said the the Oregon UCLA game, I didn't predict all those turnovers, but it did play out about like I expected to with UCLA being able to run the ball. Louisville, Florida State played out about like I expected it to. I again, I hate to sound like a broken record. And obviously, you know, you you and I are doing this because we believe we know something about college football and and maybe a little bit more than average, and we watch a lot more than most people do. But to this point, it it has both been a wild ride of a season. But I can also say each individual Saturday from a gambling perspective, I haven't felt like I've had one of those weekends where I just shake my head and go, wow, I never saw that coming. Brian: No, I agree with you. I mean, I feel the same way. I mean, I went seven and seven just like you did, but going through my picks, Oregon minus ten and a half. I mean, you got seven turnovers. What are you gonna do with that? Like I said about the Oklahoma team total under sixteen and a half. You gave up two nine offensive touchdowns. Who would have thought USC and Penn State would've turned into a track meet in the first half? But what do you do? Iowa State plus seven in the first half. I thought they'd hang a little better than that. Illinois jumped out. Yep. Greg: That was another one. Central Florida and Oklahoma State was that way. I thought I thought Central Florida was going to stay with Oklahoma State, and then Oklahoma State just pulled away at the end to cover the eleven and a half. Brian: yeah. Illinois was up by two scores the entire game against Michigan State, then blew it at the end and won the game by one. And then North Carolina I mean, North Dakota State team total, they they just got stuck in the mud against UC UNLV. So I think that was the probably the best team they played since they came into D one, but it showed. We Greg: had a chance to take a quick peek at much of the the early slate for this coming week. Hopefully we'll be able to get it out Wednesday again this week if if we can avoid any scheduling conflicts. so the 50-50, how do we do it? We did the money line parlay and we both had an underdog. Brian: We Greg: How'd those do? Brian: we've hit both hit the we hit the money line parlay. We've hit three in a row of those. So that's pretty good. And then we both hit our underdog. You had Iowa, I had Houston. I told everybody Houston was the sh team that should have been favored over Kansas State and and they took behind a woodshed. So Greg: That makes me feel a little bit better because if we'd both gone seven and seven and tacked those two on there, we might have come out a little bit ahead financially at least. Have you had a chance to look at the the lines for this coming week? Brian: I've been going through and looking at a few. I mean I can give a few games out that I'm sure we probably talk about so that everybody can get ready and if they want to hear something beside these games, you know, always reach out to us, let us know what you want to hear. I'm looking at Mississippi State at LSU, Florida at Texas, Ohio State at Indiana, Missouri at Ole Miss, Alabama at Tennessee, that's your third Saturday in October, Auburn at Georgia. Florida State at Miami, Oklahoma State at Houston, and Notre Dame at BYU. There's a several other games out there, but I mean those were the ones I could figure out that were ranked on ranked games. Greg: Yeah, I almost feel like just having the the quick look I take it, I almost feel like we have to add Penn State Michigan and North Carolina Duke just because of the nature of those rivalry type matchups and those are big name programs, you know? Brian: Yeah, on the side over here, I mean we can't add I got UNC Duke, I got Penn State, Michigan, I got Arizona State, Texas Tech, Kentucky, Oklahoma, Wisconsin and UCLA, and Nebraska, Oregon. I mean it's a loaded weekend. Greg: Give me I'm gonna I'm gonna put you on the spot for one prediction. All right. Florida State's getting 21 at Miami. Does that number go higher or lower? Brian: Hmm. I mean it's depending on where you look. Some of them's at that twenty one and a half number. I feel like it's probably gonna go higher than that. I mean, I I don't see it's a it's a rivalry game. I usually don't typically play three touchdowns in a rivalry game, but these two programs are in complete opposite directions. I think Miami can pick their number if they wanted it. Greg: Yeah, that's kind of what I was saying. Like I when I first looked at and I hadn't looked at a bunch of them, but obviously, you know, I always look at Georgia games, always look Florida State games, and and being right on three touchdowns, my first thought was I might want to go ahead and grab Miami because I'm not sure I won't have a chance to get Florida State later on in the week at twenty three and a half, maybe even twenty four. but yeah, I w I don't know that You my I haven't run it through my model, but I that's one of those because it's a rivalry game and just because of the names on the programs, I'm I'm assuming my model's probably gonna tell me to take Florida State plus the points. And I just don't know if I'd get there. Brian: I I got a good feeling that you're gonna see quit. And I think Chris Ball, you know, a few years ago we beat them what, forty five to three or something like that. He ain't forgot that. That's that's coming. Greg: No Brian: This is fixing to be the nail in the coffin. So I and like I said, he's got this their biggest recruiting weekend of the year. So he's got all his top recruits at the game. If he's got a chance to throw some salt in the wound, I think it's coming. Greg: Well, I won't I won't do you a disservice and tell whoever the potential Florida State new coach is that people like you have stopped their donations and so that pocketbook might be getting a little tighter. Brian: Hey, I would I will re go again with that donation if they depending on who they hire, because it's it's long time coming. And I mean I know I ain't I give a little bit here and there, but there are some, you know, seven, seven and eight figure donors that have pulled their funding as well. And I know that's gonna s that stings. They gotta do something. One thing I was gonna ask you about is I looked at AP poll. You got Texas dropped all the way to number seven, I guess, 'cause they but they got behind a team they beat head to head. So I guess that don't matter. Ohio State's four. I was glad to see Alabama did not j drop. They shouldn't have. They stayed right at six. So they got that one right. But I don't see how Ohio State is ranked ahead of Texas, but I guess it doesn't really matter at this point. Greg: No, I mean we you know, it's the same old thing, whether it's, you know, back in the days where there was just two polls to vote on a national champion to when they came up with the BCS and you got two teams to play for a title, and then they made it four teams and now it's twelve teams, it's gonna be four, whatever the number is, at some point you look at the rankings and you're always gonna find something, like you said, that just doesn't make sense. And I get it, like as a as a pragmatic, logical guy, you look at it and go, Well, if this team if team A beats team B Heads up, you should think Team A must be better than Team B, and therefore team A should be ranked ahead of team B. But it don't always work like that. The transitive property is never applied in college football. and that's the one good thing, at least, about the expanded playoff system, is at least now I feel better about the fact that, you know, you can you can draw that line at what number it should be. But I would make the argument that as long as you're getting the top seven or eight teams in most years, you're getting the best team and you're getting the ultimate team that probably should win the title. I that's why I was Dave and I were talking about on our show about you know it expanding to 24. Man, it at 24, the 24th seed is a team that might just be good enough to have a fluky win against a top seed, but then not be will it not be good enough to compete after that. I don't I don't think that does anybody any service. I want to keep it to where making the playoffs matters. And and frankly, I want it to be where a game like Saturday night is still important. Because although both teams could come out of that game feeling like they still got a really good shot at making the playoffs, and both teams likely will, there's still some seeding that might it it it still meant something. And I think if you just keep expanding it, although you can make the argument for opening it up for more eyeballs and more people to care, I think you really at that point will knock the luster off the the regular season. I don't want to see that happen. Brian: It's definitely gonna knock the luster off the the the conference championship games 'cause I mean, what do you have to gain from that? You're gonna see people sip guys out in that game and that ain't what that's for. I agree with you. Have you seen that documentary on Nick Saban yet? You watched any that? It Greg: Got a chance to watch it yet. Brian: It's pretty good. one thing I say about that that I liked was they won a national championship and Kirby was on there talking about and then Nick Saban called a coaches meeting the next day at seven thirty in the morning. I was like That's why he won seven national championships, 'cause he brought into that coaches meeting the next day. They're like, We parted all night till four thirty and had a coaches meeting at seven thirty and he's coming in there saying, That's over with, now what are we gonna do to get better for next year? Greg: Speaking of I I I'm I'm gonna bring something up and and I try to stay above this stuff. I have as a diehard Georgia fan, I have for the last decade dealt with other Georgia fans talking about all the Alabama love on SEC and the official and I and I get it. I it's not hard to get. But I found myself Saturday really, really noticing it on the way game day was framed, the way the whole telecast was framed. It definitely, and again, from a Georgia perspective. It definitely felt like a pro-Alabama coverage. And then all any of them want to talk about was that one questionable pass interference call. Man, that's a big-time game of big-time football. There's a lot of questionable calls made, a lot of questionable calls missed. I am tired of hearing it. And let me just put this out there. I will listen to fans complain about officiating because we all do it. But I'm sorry, after what I have witnessed for the last two decades, if you are an Alabama fan, you got no right to complain about. anything because anybody that's had Alabama on the schedule in the last two decades knows more often than not, especially when you go to Tuscaloosa, you're playing the tide and the refs. And I I don't think it's I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing that they might have got a little taste of their own medicine when they didn't get a questionable call. What were your thoughts on that call? Like I said, I I think slow motion made it where you go, okay, that's clearly past interference, but that's a bang bang play. And in that moment, I look I get it. If it had been caught, I wouldn't have argued it. But I that for them to make it sound like that play was the only reason we won game, is just rubbing me the wrong way. Brian: No, I mean if you if you're dealing with one play that is goes either way of the game, then you know it was more than that one play that that, you know, can cost you to gain. I mean, by the letter of law that was passing afference for sure. But I mean in a in a heat in a game, in the heat of battle that quick, that's a tough call to make. I mean, but it it can't it can't come down to that call. That can't be the reason that you lose a ball game. Greg: Well, and and you the old saying that the internet is undefeated. If you'll check your X feed, I have I have tagged you in one where the very same type of play happened when Alabama was against Florida State and it was an Alabama player crashing all into the FSU guy, and that was a no-call that Alabama was perfectly okay with in that game. The exact same Brian: I mean there's Greg: type of play. Brian: there's passing afferences that don't get called all all the every game. There's holding that don't get called every game. I mean it is what it is. Greg: Well, and I've also seen a slow motion angle where the Bama receiver was essentially grabbing with both hands on the KJ's jersey and pulling. So it's hard. Brian: Yeah. Greg: Like I said, I I I I certainly wouldn't have been able to complain if the call had been made. But boy, I and I get it. Look, after two decades like the tide have had, I'd probably be a sore loser now. But man, they are not happy. And I gotta tell you, I'm here for it. Brian: Well. Yeah, she was upset. Greg: Surely she sh at least she had to enjoy it knowing that her adopted son was having a time. All right, Brian. Brian: Yeah. Greg: Well, I ain't got much else to add for week six. I'm ready to start crunching some numbers and running the models on week seven. We got a bunch of big matchups, a bunch of rivalry games to talk about. If you guys are catching this, like, subscribe, share it. If you want us to talk about a different game or you want to know about a specific angle on a game or anything like that, don't hesitate to reach out. We are we're gonna do it either way, so we might well do what you want us to do. But other than that, I'm gonna wrap it up and look forward to David coming back to taking the host job so I can just sit back in my chair and relax and let him drive. Brian, you got any good words for the people before we wrap it up? Brian: Now looking forward to getting these games out there. Got a big slate this weekend. Got a lot of games to talk about. And like I said, like you, you know, hit us up if you want us to talk about a about a certain game or you want us to go more into more detail about a certain game, don't hesitate to reach out. Greg: will I will put it out there that and and I think I kind of made the comment when we were going over the recap leading into this weekend. Fourteen plays is too many plays for me. I knew it was. I I know it is. I'm gonna try to do a better job of of trimming my playlist down. so for anybody that's listening and paying attention, I will certainly be willing to give you a lean on any game that I have a lean on. But as far as and and again just for the sake of protecting the record, I'm gonna be a little more selective as far as what I make an official play because I and again I'm not trying to Not trying to give myself an out, but there there were probably four or five of those plays. Like, I just wanna make a play 'cause we got we're gonna talk about the game anyway. Brian: Yeah. I mean I could probably trim it down, but I'd looking at my fourteen, I'd have bet all fourteen of them again. Greg: I know for a fact I wouldn't have bet on I I I would not have bet on the Georgia Alabama game. I I knew that that had too many variables going into it. So but I'm gonna find a bet on the Wyoming game. I can assure you that. That's that's my mission for the rest of the week. I will have a play on the Wyoming game, but I'm not gonna force anything else. Brian: And Montana State's back in action this weekend, so I'm sure I'll have something on that. Greg: Can't wait till we make our road trip to Laravie and Montana State, man. Let's swing let's swing that out and make a two a a two weekend trip. We'll hit one and one. Brian: Let's do it. Greg: All right, guys. Well until the next time and until hopefully Wednesday night with David Smith back in charge. We'll we'll do the homework so you can you can place the bets on for the weekend. Take care, guys. Brian: There you go.
