- 0:05(Transcribed by TurboScribe.ai. Go Unlimited to remove this message.) Hi, I'm Chris.
- 0:07This is Finding God at Work.
- 0:13Our current series is Gentle Witnesses, sharing the
- 0:17good news at work in a way that
- 0:18actually makes sense.
- 0:26I want to start with a quote from
- 0:27C.S. Lewis from his spiritual memoir Surprised
- 0:31by Joy.
- 0:32He's describing the different steps that unfolded in
- 0:34his own life, which eventually culminated in him
- 0:37placing his faith in Jesus Christ, embracing Christianity,
- 0:40following Jesus for the rest of his life.
- 0:43But before he got there, he had a
- 0:45significant experience, and it's kind of funny how
- 0:48he describes this.
- 0:50He says, I was going up Headington Hill
- 0:52on the top of a bus.
- 0:54You can always imagine this double-decker UK
- 0:56bus, right, where you can sit on the
- 0:58top like you do over there.
- 1:00So he's on the top level of the
- 1:01bus, right?
- 1:02He's going up the hill, and then he
- 1:04says, without words, and I think almost without
- 1:09images, a fact about myself was somehow presented
- 1:12to me.
- 1:13I became aware that I was holding something
- 1:15at bay or shutting something out.
- 1:18Or if you like, that I was wearing
- 1:20some stiff clothing or even a suit of
- 1:22armor, as if I were a lobster.
- 1:24I felt myself being there and then given
- 1:27a free choice.
- 1:29I could open the door or keep it
- 1:31shut.
- 1:32I could unbuckle the armor or keep it
- 1:35on.
- 1:36I felt as if I were a man
- 1:37of snow at long last beginning to melt.
- 1:41The melting was starting in my back, drip,
- 1:43drip, and presently trickle, trickle.
- 1:46I rather disliked the feeling.
- 1:49OK, so it just makes me laugh at
- 1:51these images that Lewis summons up to try
- 1:54and describe what's going on in his heart,
- 1:56in his imagination, in his experience of himself.
- 2:00It's like he was a lobster, right?
- 2:01Like this hard, external shell, right?
- 2:05And he's being presented with this choice.
- 2:06Are you going to stay like that?
- 2:08Are you going to stay like the lobster,
- 2:10crustacean, firm invulnerability?
- 2:14Or are you going to open up?
- 2:16Are you going to open the door?
- 2:17Are you going to let yourself melt a
- 2:20little bit?
- 2:21And what Lewis is capturing so eloquently and
- 2:24creatively here is this moment that can happen
- 2:27in people's spiritual journey, the moment of openness
- 2:30to change.
- 2:32And that's our next step on our five
- 2:34thresholds that we're looking at.
- 2:35So we've already looked at trusting a Christian
- 2:38friend and how trust is the beginning of
- 2:40this process for many people.
- 2:42Then curiosity, becoming curious, which may just be
- 2:45intellectual, academic, philosophical.
- 2:47But now here on this third step, people
- 2:49are not just dealing with ideas.
- 2:52People are beginning to ask, could this change
- 2:55me?
- 2:58Could something happen inside of me about all
- 3:02these things I'm exploring?
- 3:03Could something be real in my life?
- 3:07And this often comes on people as a
- 3:10kind of surprise, right?
- 3:11Even C.S. Lewis, the title of his
- 3:12memoir, Surprised by Joy, until people get to
- 3:15the point of being personally open to an
- 3:17experience of change.
- 3:19It's not on their agenda, right?
- 3:21They were just exploring ideas.
- 3:22They were just having a Christian friend.
- 3:24Like they weren't planning on big life change
- 3:26happening, but then they find that something is
- 3:28happening inside of them.
- 3:30And so we as gentle witnesses, people who
- 3:34are coming alongside our friends who are witnessing
- 3:36what's going on in them, paying attention to
- 3:38what's going on in them and witnessing the
- 3:40reality of Jesus that we've already known, that
- 3:43we know it's a change worth experiencing to
- 3:45come into the reality of Jesus.
- 3:48We want to be really attentive to when
- 3:50this moment is happening for someone.
- 3:53Because it's not an easy moment.
- 3:55So we want to look at some guidance
- 3:56here from Don Everts and Doug Schapp.
- 3:58Their book, I Once Was Lost, that we've
- 4:00kind of been working through during this series,
- 4:02and they describe some of their conversations with
- 4:05friends who are starting to step into this
- 4:07stage of openness to change.
- 4:09And they say this, before actively seeking God
- 4:12and considering becoming a follower of Jesus, our
- 4:16friends had to become open to change in
- 4:18their life.
- 4:19And becoming open to change is much harder
- 4:21than it may seem on the surface.
- 4:24It is actually a heroic, mysterious, deep thing.
- 4:28We found that for everyone who easily makes
- 4:30the transition from being curious to becoming open,
- 4:34there are many more who struggle to become
- 4:36open to change or who never do at
- 4:39all, but just walk away from the journey
- 4:41to faith all together.
- 4:44Becoming open to change, it's not the same
- 4:47as crossing that line of placing your faith
- 4:50in Jesus, making a faith commitment, right?
- 4:53Even in Lewis's life, this moment on the
- 4:55top of the double decker bus was not
- 4:56his moment of embracing Jesus consciously, but it
- 4:59was this beginning to melt moment in his
- 5:02heart, in his life.
- 5:03And so when somebody feels like Lewis did
- 5:06that sense of, I can open the door
- 5:07or keep it closed, they're not necessarily walking
- 5:09through the door, but they're just deciding, am
- 5:11I going to turn the handle?
- 5:13Am I going to open it up a
- 5:14crack and I'm going to peek through and
- 5:15maybe see if there's something on the other
- 5:16side there?
- 5:17And so that's a really tender moment for
- 5:19us to come alongside.
- 5:20And it's a very difficult moment and it's
- 5:22difficult for obvious reasons.
- 5:24Keeping the door shut is much more safe.
- 5:27It's much more familiar.
- 5:28It's a door that someone's never opened before.
- 5:31And so for somebody to become open to
- 5:33change requires an incredible vulnerability.
- 5:37And that vulnerability, that openness is the beginning
- 5:42of faith.
- 5:43Again, it may not be that moment of
- 5:44saving faith, of confessing Jesus as Lord, but
- 5:47it is a turning of the heart toward
- 5:50God.
- 5:51It's a turning of the heart toward, maybe
- 5:53this could be real.
- 5:55And that's the beginning of faith.
- 5:56And we see expressions of a more mature
- 5:59version of this kind of openness or the
- 6:01lack of it in scripture.
- 6:03So I just want to look at two
- 6:04kind of scripture examples that give us this
- 6:06framework for understanding openness.
- 6:10One of those mature examples of openness is
- 6:13the Virgin Mary.
- 6:15When the Archangel Gabriel comes to her with
- 6:17this surprising announcement about the coming of Jesus.
- 6:21And it's clear that God is asking her
- 6:23to step into this moment, to open the
- 6:25door.
- 6:26She has a question.
- 6:27She asks her question, but then she says,
- 6:30let it be to me according to your
- 6:32word.
- 6:34Let it be to me according to your
- 6:36word.
- 6:37That is a statement of profound vulnerability.
- 6:40Mary doesn't know everything she's signing up for,
- 6:42right?
- 6:43What does it mean to become the mother
- 6:44of the Messiah, of the Son of God?
- 6:47Well, what suffering and pain is in store
- 6:49for her, but she embraces it even so.
- 6:52She says, may it be to me according
- 6:55to your word.
- 6:56I am opening the door.
- 6:58I am open to what God is doing
- 7:00in me in this moment.
- 7:04In his comments on this statement of Mary,
- 7:08Pope John Paul II, in his 1986 encyclical
- 7:11letter, Dominum et Vivificantem, he says this, Mary
- 7:16entered the history of the salvation of the
- 7:19world through the obedience of faith.
- 7:21And faith in its deepest essence is the
- 7:25openness of the human heart to the gift,
- 7:28to God's self-communication in the Holy Spirit.
- 7:33Faith in its deepest essence is the openness
- 7:36of the human heart to the gift.
- 7:40I actually used to have that quote pasted
- 7:42on my bedroom wall when I was in
- 7:43high school, because that gets how nerdy I
- 7:45was.
- 7:46Even though I've never been Catholic, I had
- 7:47a Saint John Paul II quote on my
- 7:50wall in high school or on my door,
- 7:52because I just love that image.
- 7:55Faith in its deepest essence is the openness
- 7:58of the human heart to the gift of
- 8:00the Holy Spirit.
- 8:02And so when somebody begins to turn that
- 8:04door knob, begins to open the door, even
- 8:05if they're not fully putting their faith in
- 8:07Jesus yet, they're beginning to, they're beginning to
- 8:11have that moment of, of could this be
- 8:12real?
- 8:13But even when somebody maybe still has their
- 8:15hand on the doorknob, they can slam the
- 8:18door shut again.
- 8:18And we see this in scripture as well.
- 8:21So if we think about Jesus's conversation with
- 8:23the rich young ruler.
- 8:25So this is from the gospel of Luke
- 8:26chapter 18 verse 22, he's had some back
- 8:31and forth with the rich young ruler.
- 8:32And then Jesus says, you still lack one
- 8:35thing, sell everything you have and give to
- 8:37the poor and you will have treasure in
- 8:39heaven.
- 8:40Then come follow me.
- 8:43When the man heard this, he became very
- 8:44sad because he was very wealthy.
- 8:48So, so this man seems like he's moving
- 8:50to genuine openness, right?
- 8:52He's asking Jesus about eternal life.
- 8:54He's, he's engaging with Jesus's answers to his
- 8:56questions.
- 8:57But then Jesus sees, Oh, he, what he
- 8:59really needs, right?
- 9:01Is a change in his life to really
- 9:03be open to God.
- 9:05He needs to, to, to give up the
- 9:07way that he's attached to his possessions.
- 9:09And so Jesus challenges him to have that
- 9:11kind of openness.
- 9:12And the man goes away sad, right?
- 9:15He, he closes the door, he walks away.
- 9:17He says, I, that's too much for me.
- 9:20And that can happen with our friends at
- 9:22this point in the journey too.
- 9:23Maybe somebody begins to explore openness to Jesus,
- 9:26but they get uncomfortable.
- 9:27They back away from it.
- 9:29A temptation we can have as friends is
- 9:32again, to be anxious, right?
- 9:33To, to think, Oh, we've got to get
- 9:34them to do the right thing.
- 9:36But again, evangelism is not about getting anybody
- 9:38to do anything.
- 9:39It's about coming alongside people, helping them take
- 9:42their next step, whatever it is.
- 9:44So actually just being calm, gentle, present to
- 9:48people in this moment is helpful.
- 9:51So, so here's a question.
- 9:52What can we do if it's not about
- 9:53forcing people to somehow do something?
- 9:55What can we do in these moments of
- 9:58vulnerability?
- 9:59Well, one thing we can do is to
- 10:01practice openness ourselves.
- 10:02Again, we always want to be practicing what
- 10:04we preach, right?
- 10:04To, to be modeling and just living out
- 10:08this way of Jesus as we, we encourage
- 10:10others to take these steps.
- 10:11And so we can be open with others.
- 10:14That sense of appropriate vulnerability, sharing what's tender
- 10:18in our heart with someone else, sharing our
- 10:22difficult experiences with other people as appropriate, as
- 10:25there's trust both ways built in that friendship.
- 10:28You can share some of your experience with
- 10:30them and maybe some of how God has
- 10:31met you and your experience with them.
- 10:35And that again, we'll encourage them to say
- 10:36like, wow, this person's being open with me.
- 10:39Maybe I can be open with them.
- 10:40Maybe I can be open even with Jesus
- 10:44in some way.
- 10:46Maybe I can unfold part of what's going
- 10:48on in my heart.
- 10:51Now, when we, when we think about that
- 10:52kind of vulnerability and openness, something that comes
- 10:55up is the pain that people are carrying
- 10:57in their different experiences and the traumas they've
- 10:59been through.
- 11:01So I just want to take a very
- 11:02simple quote about trauma here.
- 11:04This is from one of those classics, the
- 11:06book, Emotional Intelligence by Daniel Goleman, published a
- 11:10few decades ago at this point.
- 11:12But he's got this quote about how healing
- 11:14can happen around painful and traumatic memories.
- 11:17He says this, another step in healing involves
- 11:20retelling and reconstructing the story of the trauma
- 11:23in the harbor of that safety, allowing the
- 11:27emotional circuitry to acquire a new, more realistic
- 11:30understanding of and response to the traumatic memory
- 11:34and its triggers.
- 11:36As patients retell the horrific details of the
- 11:39trauma, the memory starts to be transformed, both
- 11:42in its emotional meaning and in its effects
- 11:45on the emotional brain.
- 11:48Now the context he's talking about there, he
- 11:50used the word patients, right?
- 11:52It was like a clinical relationship with a
- 11:53therapist or a doctor, someone who's listening to
- 11:56a patient unfold a traumatic memory, who's trained
- 11:59to do that in a safe way so
- 12:00that they don't have to be re-traumatized
- 12:02as they share that memory.
- 12:03But the person learning to tell their story,
- 12:07even the painful parts of their story, helps
- 12:09them craft new meaning around that story.
- 12:12It's part of the healing process itself.
- 12:14Well, obviously that can happen in a healthy
- 12:16way, in a specific way, in a clinical
- 12:18setting.
- 12:19And sometimes it needs to, particularly if somebody
- 12:20really does have like formal post-traumatic stress
- 12:23disorder or really severe traumas, those clinical settings
- 12:26can be helpful.
- 12:28But this is also something that can happen
- 12:30in friendships.
- 12:31If we create that sense of safety for
- 12:33someone, we've built that level of trust with
- 12:35them, we've listened to them, we've seen how
- 12:38they're curious and we've responded by being curious
- 12:40about them.
- 12:41They may begin to unfold to us in
- 12:44the context of our friendship, part of their
- 12:46painful experiences.
- 12:48And if we tenderly receive that, listen to
- 12:51that, that openness with a kind heart, with
- 12:56an attentive presence, with a warm care for
- 13:02them as a human being, even them sharing
- 13:05those things with us can be an experience
- 13:07of healing.
- 13:07It doesn't have to be re-traumatizing for
- 13:10somebody to share those things.
- 13:11If they're sharing them in an environment of
- 13:13safety, with somebody who cares about them, going
- 13:16at their own pace, according to the openness
- 13:18that they have, that can be the beginning
- 13:20of healing.
- 13:22And that can also be part of somebody's
- 13:24journey towards faith.
- 13:25If they realize, wow, my painful experiences are
- 13:28safe in this friendship, maybe my painful experiences
- 13:33could be safe in a friendship with Jesus.
- 13:36And now again, it's probably going to take
- 13:38a long time for them to make that
- 13:39next connection.
- 13:40Openness to change, it can be a long
- 13:42process, right?
- 13:44But we want to make sure that we're
- 13:45present.
- 13:45So one way that we can help is
- 13:47by being present, being appropriately vulnerable and open
- 13:50ourselves.
- 13:50And by being tender and attentive as people
- 13:53share their own experiences of pain with us,
- 13:56again, with an eye open towards the possibility
- 13:59of healing, even as people are on the
- 14:01journey of faith.
- 14:04And then the final thing we can do
- 14:06that can be helpful at this stage of
- 14:08openness is to gently challenge people.
- 14:11Now, it's really important, again, to gently do
- 14:13this.
- 14:14But somebody may be kind of sorting out
- 14:17like, do I open the door or not,
- 14:19right?
- 14:19Do I open the door a little bit
- 14:21further or not?
- 14:22Do I slam it shut?
- 14:24And we want to challenge people to open
- 14:26the door further.
- 14:27Again, we never take liberties.
- 14:28We never assume that we have more trust
- 14:31with the person than we do.
- 14:32We don't do power moves to get one
- 14:35up on them.
- 14:36We're just gently coming alongside people.
- 14:38And another way of thinking about this, how
- 14:39do we gently challenge people to open the
- 14:41door, is to help people interpret their own
- 14:43story, right?
- 14:45So people are going through something.
- 14:47And when they're in this experience of openness
- 14:49to change, they're going through something right now
- 14:51in the present.
- 14:53And they may not see all the connections
- 14:55that we can see between what they're experiencing
- 14:57and the reality of Jesus.
- 15:00So this is something that Don Everts and
- 15:02Doug Schaupp speak to in the book.
- 15:04I want to just read a quick quote
- 15:06from them.
- 15:06They call this helping people connect the dots.
- 15:10At this threshold, we are often simply helping
- 15:12to interpret and connect the dots in our
- 15:14friends' lives.
- 15:15If we truly believe that God has come
- 15:17to seek and save the lost, and we
- 15:19trust that he has been at work in
- 15:20their lives already, then it's often a matter
- 15:23of reframing the events and issues in their
- 15:25life within God's story.
- 15:28Gentle confrontation often reveals just how open they
- 15:31are to looking at things from a different
- 15:33perspective.
- 15:35For example, you could say, I don't think
- 15:37these are random events in your life.
- 15:39I think God is pursuing you.
- 15:41I think God is doing all he can
- 15:43to get your attention.
- 15:45So you kind of see the angle they're
- 15:47coming at it from.
- 15:48You're listening to people tell their story.
- 15:51Then you're helping people make connections between the
- 15:54story they're telling and the story of God,
- 15:56the story that you know, the story that
- 15:57you know you're living inside of with that
- 15:59person because Jesus is real.
- 16:02And so there's a real shepherding reality to
- 16:03this.
- 16:04It's very tender to say to somebody, wow,
- 16:06I think that what's happening in you right
- 16:08now is that Jesus is calling you to
- 16:11himself.
- 16:12Can you see that?
- 16:13Can you see how this experience and that
- 16:15experience and the change that you're talking about,
- 16:17how maybe that could be God speaking to
- 16:18you?
- 16:19Now, again, that's not something that you can
- 16:20force, right?
- 16:21It's not like we can just have already
- 16:23made the answer like, oh, yes, Jesus is
- 16:25always after every single human being.
- 16:27And so regardless of what they tell me,
- 16:28I'm just going to tell them that, oh,
- 16:29obviously Jesus is after you, right?
- 16:31Even though we do believe in some way
- 16:33that the Holy Spirit is at work in
- 16:34every story, we have to actually listen to
- 16:37the story.
- 16:38We have to actually see the ways that
- 16:39God could be at work.
- 16:40We have to discern.
- 16:41So there's no, no boilerplate or cookie cutter
- 16:43ready response for any of these things.
- 16:45It's rather in that person's individual lives, as
- 16:48you listen to them, can you discern in
- 16:50the Holy Spirit?
- 16:51Wow, that seems like Jesus is doing something.
- 16:53And can you help that person see that
- 16:55as well?
- 16:55Can you help them connect those dots?
- 16:58I've had conversations like this.
- 17:00So a friend of mine was sharing how
- 17:02she has been reading the Psalms at night.
- 17:05Again, not, not yet committed fully, but she's
- 17:07been reading the Psalms and she said this
- 17:09really fascinating thing to me.
- 17:10She's like, when I read the Psalms, it
- 17:13just kind of feels like that's the voice
- 17:15of God, like these things about like being
- 17:17protected and being safe.
- 17:19And I was like, yeah, I think it
- 17:21is.
- 17:22Now that was, that was easy, right?
- 17:23She was beginning to connect the dots herself.
- 17:25But I was like, yeah, no, I think
- 17:27God is trying to speak to you and
- 17:28how he wants to protect you and how
- 17:29he wants to be your shelter through that
- 17:32experience of your reading the Psalms.
- 17:33Right.
- 17:34So that's the kind of thing we're talking
- 17:35about what's really going on for them.
- 17:37How can we help them connect the dots?
- 17:39How can we help them see that God
- 17:41is welcoming them to open that door a
- 17:44little further.
- 17:48Lord Jesus, we want to be open to
- 17:50you.
- 17:50Show us how to keep our hearts open
- 17:52to the gift of your Holy Spirit.
