- 0:22SPEAKER_00: Social media for authors can be great because it lets us connect with so many other people around the world.
- 0:27SPEAKER_00: But it also has a downside, which is basically feeling jealous when you see the wins that other writers are having.
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: Let's be honest, we've all felt it just let's have a moment of collective honesty here.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: All of us have seen other cool wins that authors are having, and we felt a little bit jealous.
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: Now, even though we see their wins, we don't see the struggle and the failure or the heartaches that went into creating those wins.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: So remember, anytime that you see a win, it's just part of the picture.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: It's not the whole picture.
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: This is why you need to celebrate every inch of progress that you're making as a writer.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: Because nobody sees your full picture either.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: They don't see the hard work that goes into your books and your blog and other client work and other kinds of things that you're doing.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: So it's important for you to celebrate that success because so often it goes unseen by everybody else.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: So here's some examples.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: Did you write some words today?
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: That's a win.
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: Did you learn something about publishing today?
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: That's a win.
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: Did you attend a session for your writing group?
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: That's a win.
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: Did you have lunch with an author or set up a chat with another writer?
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: If so, that's a win.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: Did you talk to an editor or a graphic designer about your next book project?
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: That's a win.
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: Did you spend some time marketing your book today?
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: That's a win.
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: In other words, and you see where I'm going with this, whatever you did today to further your writing and author business, you won.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: You had a win.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: Do you remember that old fable about the tortoise and the hare?
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: I think that was one of Aesop's fables.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: The tortoise won because he kept plodding along, making constant progress.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: Even though the hare or the rabbit started out really fast, the tortoise won eventually because he kept making constant progress.
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: So the moral of the story here is that slow and steady wins the race.
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: The only person you need to keep score against is the person you were yesterday.
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: Remember, all progress is progress.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: So here's today's challenge.
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: I want you to find an author who has recently posted a win on social media and congratulate them on making consistent progress and getting a cool win.
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: Then see what you can learn from that person.
- 2:38SPEAKER_00: Now I have to tell you, one of the people in my circle and in my network who I really admire for their constant progress and success is my good friend Christy Griffith, who owns Thumbprint Creative.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: Christy has worked on a lot of different books I've been a part of, some of them my books, some of them friends books, some of them books for some of my clients.
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: And she is so consistent and so talented and just so easy to work with.
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: I really, really have appreciated her over the years.
- 3:04SPEAKER_00: You know, one of the things to think about whenever you have a business like mind, which is primarily ghostwriting, but I also lead our membership group, the Daily Writer Club.
- 3:12SPEAKER_00: I do author coaching, I run a mastermind, um, I do this podcast, I do a lot of different things, but they're all around books.
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: And one of the key things that a lot of people don't think about until you do this job like on a serious basis, is you've got to have your bench of people.
- 3:27SPEAKER_00: What I mean by that is you you've got to have kind of a small group of people that you work with on a regular basis.
- 3:33SPEAKER_00: You've got to have one or two really great editors you work with, you've got to have graphic designers, you've got to have people involved in publishing and marketing.
- 3:41SPEAKER_00: Um, you've got to have different kinds of editors because some books need different things.
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: You've got to have other people who you can refer work to when you can't handle it all or if it's something you don't want to do, and vice versa.
- 3:52SPEAKER_00: And I'm so thankful for Christy because she has been such a consistent presence in my business really over the last gosh, way before I was doing this full time.
- 4:02SPEAKER_00: Um, she actually did the the cover for my second book, The Artist Suitcase, which came out in 2015, and I knew her long before that.
- 4:09SPEAKER_00: Uh, Christy actually did a lot of graphic design work for the college where I used to teach.
- 4:13SPEAKER_00: That's how I got to know her in the first place.
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: And she's really, really wonderful.
- 4:17SPEAKER_00: So if you are looking for somebody to do the interior layout and cover design for your book, Christy is the person to do it.
- 4:23SPEAKER_00: You can check out her designs by going to go thumbprint.com.
- 4:27SPEAKER_00: That's her website.
- 4:28SPEAKER_00: And if you would like a personal intro to Christy, just shoot me an email.
- 4:32SPEAKER_00: I would be happy to do that.
- 4:33SPEAKER_00: My email is Kent at dailyriderlife.com.
- 4:36SPEAKER_00: Shoot me an email anytime.
- 4:37SPEAKER_00: I would be happy to connect to you directly with Christy.
- 4:40SPEAKER_00: All right, my friend, as always, thanks for listening, and I'll see you next time.
